GIP, Springs & Bolts Partner To Expand Automotive Manufacturing

0

Some SBCL products

Growth Investment Partners (GIP) Ghana Ltd, an investment platform established by British International Investment (BII), has announced a strategic investment in Springs and Bolts Company Limited (SBCL), a Kumasi-based manufacturer of automotive aftermarket components.

The investment will finance the acquisition of a fully automated leaf spring production line, enabling SBCL to expand production capacity from 4 to 12 metric tonnes per day while also enhancing efficiency.

The expansion is expected to boost local capacity, reduce reliance on imports, and position Ghana as a competitive supplier of automotive components within the West African region.

With regional demand for springs, bolts, and related products estimated at US$600 million annually, most of which is currently served by imports from Asia and South Africa, the investment will help strengthen Ghana’s industrial supply chains.

Chief Executive and Investment Officer of GIP Ghana Jacob Kholi, said,
“There is a clear market gap for locally manufactured components that meet international standards. By backing SBCL’s expansion, we are not only scaling a competitive business but also contributing to Ghana’s broader industrialisation agenda.”

Chief Executive Officer of SBCL, Derrick Asamoah Boahen, welcomed the partnership saying,
“Our goal is to position SBCL as the preferred source of high-quality automotive components in West Africa. We are proud to partner with GIP in this next phase of our growth. With increased capacity and automation, we can better serve the automotive, logistics, mining, and agriculture sectors while providing more affordable and quality alternatives to imported products.”

SBCL’s growth has been supported through partnerships with Supreme Springs of South Africa for technical expertise, GIZ for market access to logistics and mining companies, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) Jobs and Economic Transformation (JET) Programme for market research and expanding capacities into novel production of fasteners. The company currently employs 28 people and is poised to expand its workforce significantly.

With duty-free access under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, SBCL is well-positioned to improve competitiveness across the sub-region while exploring vertical integration opportunities such as securing raw material supply chains and expanding downstream services.

“Reducing dependence on imports is not just about production capacity; it’s about building an ecosystem that supports critical supply chains across mining, agriculture, and logistics,” Boahen added.

Country Director for Ghana, British International Investment Kwabena Asante-Poku, said,
“Through Growth Investment Partners Ghana, British International Investment is backing SMEs that can transform Ghana’s industrial base. Supporting SBCL’s expansion will not only reduce reliance on imports but also strengthen critical supply chains across mining, agriculture, and logistics.”

The GIP–SBCL partnership aligns with Ghana’s industrial policy goals by expanding manufacturing capacity, creating jobs, and strengthening regional supply chains.

Sista Afia praised for her impact in Ghana’s music industry

0

Sista Afia has been celebrated for her achievements in Ghana’s music industry, despite her own concerns that her efforts have not been fully recognised.

The singer, who recently spoke on ‘The Delay Show’ about the challenges she has faced in her career, has been described as a “star” by arts and culture journalist Kwame Dadzie.

He noted in a Facebook post that Afia has done remarkably well over the past decade and should take pride in her successes.

Sista Afia entered the male-dominated industry in 2015 with her debut single ‘Kro Kro No,’ featuring highlife act Bisa K’dei. She followed up with ‘Jeje,’ a collaboration with Shatta Wale, which boosted her profile further.

Over the years, she has built an impressive catalogue with features from top Ghanaian and Nigerian artistes. Without the backing of a major investor, she has worked hard to sustain her relevance in what she has described as a very competitive and “slippery” space.

Kwame Dadzie stressed that globally only a small fraction of musicians reach superstardom, but many, like Sista Afia, create sustainable careers that earn them respect and recognition.

“She may not have gotten to the level she wants to be yet but she is THERE! Afia is very talented. She sings so well,” he said.

He urged the singer to acknowledge her progress, adding that she has already won the admiration of many fans.

“She has the potential to soar even higher. In the meantime, she should revel in the smaller gains… Sista Afia is already a star.”

Below is Kwame Dadzie’s full post on Facebook concerning the singer:

“Anytime I come across talented up and coming musicians, I wish they all blow but the truth is, not all of them will blow.

In fact, I have said it umpteenth times that not everyone who pursues music will reach THE VERY TOP. Globally, only about 0.1% of musicians ever achieve superstardom. It has little to do with Ghana’s ramshackle industry. It’s a simple theory of Charles Darwin’s natural selection. It pertains to every aspect of life”

However, there is hope. Around 5% to 10% of musicians globally build sustainable careers without necessarily becoming household names. They earn a decent living through performances, licensing deals, teaching, or session work.

Success in music is not always about fame; it is also about creating a life where your art supports you.

I have seen Sista Afia’s interview with Delay. She may not have gotten to the level she wants to be yet but she is THERE! Afia is very talented. She sings so well.

I believe she is doing amazingly well and has won the hearts of many music lovers. There are many young musicians who will bless their stars if they were at her level.

She has the potential to soar even higher. In the meantime, she should revel in the “smaller gains.” Human needs are insatiable. Sometimes instead of getting sad over our unanswered prayers, let’s also take a moment to thank God for how far he’s brought us. Sista Afia is already a star.”

Accident oversight, airport management in focus as Ghana engages ICAO

0

The government is putting aviation safety, oversight, and airport management at the center of its engagement with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as the country’s transport minister leads a high-level delegation to the 42nd  ICAO Assembly in Montréal, Canada.

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe is joined by John M.K. Wumborti, Acting Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau, Stephen Wilfred Arthur, Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, and Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited.

The 10-day assembly, hosted by Canada from Sept. 23 to Oct. 3, is the world’s top forum for governments and industry stakeholders to set the direction of global aviation.

The country’s participation highlights its intention to strengthen systems across accident investigation, regulatory enforcement, and airport operations. Minister Nikpe said the country remains committed to working with ICAO and other partners to ensure safety, security, and sustainability are central to aviation policy.

“We believe that no nation should be left behind in shaping the future of air transport,” he said.

Canada’s Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon, opening the event, underscored the need for cooperation, innovation, accessibility, and sustainability. He reiterated Canada’s commitment to strong safety and inclusion standards in international aviation.

The Ghanaian delegation also attended the ICAO Innovation Fair, held ahead of the assembly, which showcased new technologies and solutions aimed at improving aviation safety and inclusivity. Participation in the fair reflects Ghana’s interest in leveraging innovation to support its domestic aviation industry.

By fielding senior representatives from the accident investigation bureau, the aviation regulator, and the airports company, Ghana is signaling a coordinated approach to addressing gaps in safety oversight, managing accident investigations more efficiently, and modernizing airport infrastructure. The move comes as ICAO pushes its “no country left behind” agenda, which aims to ensure that smaller and developing nations benefit from global aviation standards.

The Montréal meetings are expected to set priorities on safety, emissions, and digital innovation for the next three years. For Ghana, aligning with these discussions is seen as key to boosting confidence in its aviation sector, improving compliance with international safety standards, and strengthening the role of Kotoka International Airport as a hub in West Africa.

Asiedu Nketiah warns against misappropriation of state funds, threatens repatriation of assets

0

Asiedu Nketiah spoke during the second phase of his thank-you tour in the Mpraeso constituency Asiedu Nketiah spoke during the second phase of his thank-you tour in the Mpraeso constituency

Correspondence from Eastern Region

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a stern warning to individuals who have allegedly misappropriated Ghanaian state funds and fled the country.

Speaking during the second phase of his thank-you tour in the Mpraeso constituency in the Eastern Region, Asiedu Nketiah declared that the bodies of such individuals, or their assets, will be used to account for the public money they are accused of absconding with.

“Your body will be judged, and war awaits you if you have spent Ghanaian money,” Asiedu Nketiah stated emphatically, addressing a gathering of party faithful and constituents. “If your dead body will pay, otherwise there won’t be a place for your burial in Ghana.”

‘What is it for exactly? – Social media users question Asiedu Nketiah over ‘Thank You Tour’

The NDC National Chairman’s strong pronouncement suggests a determined stance against corruption and financial impropriety, particularly targeting those who allegedly engaged in such acts and subsequently sought refuge outside Ghana.

While specific individuals or cases were not named during this address, the sentiment conveyed is clear: there will be no impunity for those who have allegedly defrauded the state.

Asiedu Nketiah’s remarks come at a time when public discourse in Ghana often centres on issues of economic governance, accountability, and the fight against corruption. His forceful language signals a possible shift in approach towards asset recovery and holding those found guilty of financial crimes accountable, even after they have left the country.

The NDC National Chairman’s thank-you tour, which has taken him across various constituencies, is aimed at appreciating the electorate for their support and engaging with party members at the grassroots level. His address in Mpraeso, however, took on a more confrontational tone, highlighting what he perceives as critical issues of national concern.

Asiedu Nketiah breaks silence on President Mahama’s third-term agenda

The implications of Asiedu Nketiah’s warning are significant, raising questions about the legal and logistical mechanisms that would be employed to enforce such pronouncements. It underscores a growing sentiment in some political circles for more robust measures to ensure that public funds are protected and that those who misappropriate them face severe consequences, regardless of their geographical location.

The party’s position on this matter is expected to be a key talking point as the political landscape in Ghana continues to evolve.

What it means for the cedi

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has made one of its largest dollar interventions in recent months, offering US$300 million through a seven-day forward auction to help stabilise the cedi.

According to market data, commercial banks took up US$243 million of the offer at a rate between GH¢12.15 and GH¢12.40 per dollar.

According to myjoyonline.com, some banks said they expect the cedi to remain steady in the coming days, supported by the Central Bank’s move.

Interbank activity, however, remains muted, with just US$4 million exchanged among participants on September 24, 2025.

Interbank Market: Cedi trades at GH¢12.35 to $1

The intervention follows President John Dramani Mahama’s recent remarks that the BoG had pulled back from routine interventions to balance the needs of exporters and importers.

At the last Monetary Policy Committee briefing, Governor Dr Johnson Asiama also assured that commercial banks had sufficient dollar supply to meet market demand.

In August 2025, the Bank sold US$737 million via spot and forward auctions, representing an 18% decrease from the US$900 million plus sold in July.

Analysts said this reflects a deliberate policy to reduce dependence on Central Bank support.

Despite recent depreciation pressures, the cedi’s slide has slowed in recent weeks.

The BoG is optimistic that additional inflows will help stabilise the currency.

The Director of Research at the BoG, Dr Philip Abradu-Otoo, said regulatory measures are already easing liquidity challenges.

Mining firms are now required to channel their foreign exchange earnings through local banks, while remittance inflows have picked up.

He added that cocoa inflows and donor disbursements expected later this year should provide further support.

“All these inflows should go a long way to improve the supply situation when it comes to the forex market,” Dr Abradu-Otoo noted.

Timeless African Print Dresses

0

African print dresses have long transcended the realm of mere fashion statements to become powerful symbols of heritage, identity, and artistry. Rooted in a deep cultural history, these garments are more than colorful attire — they are timeless pieces that tell stories of tradition, resilience, and pride.

One of the most captivating aspects of African print dresses is the versatility of the fabrics, particularly Ankara, Kente, Dashiki, and Kitenge. These textiles are characterized by bold patterns, vivid colors, and symbolic motifs, each with cultural meanings and historical significance. For instance, Kente cloth from Ghana was once reserved for royalty and special ceremonies, and even today, wearing it reflects dignity and honor.

Despite the evolving trends in global fashion, African print dresses remain evergreen. Designers across Africa and the diaspora have embraced innovation while staying true to traditional roots, creating modern silhouettes — from sleek mermaid gowns to elegant A-line dresses — that highlight the beauty of African prints. Whether styled for weddings, festivals, or everyday wear, these dresses offer a perfect blend of elegance and cultural pride.

In recent years, African print fashion has gained international acclaim. Global celebrities and influencers proudly wear African prints on red carpets and runways, further elevating their timeless appeal. What makes these dresses enduring is not just their aesthetic value but their ability to adapt — seamlessly blending tradition with modern fashion sensibilities.

Ultimately, timeless African print dresses are more than a trend; they are a tribute to Africa’s diverse cultures, artistic legacy, and unyielding spirit. As fashion continues to evolve, these dresses will remain iconic, cherished across generations.

planetGOLD Trains ASGM Miners On Finance

0

Section of guests and participants in a group photograph

The planetGOLD Ghana Project, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), has organised a two-day capacity-building workshop to strengthen financial inclusion and promote responsible supply chains in Ghana’s Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector.

The training brought together artisanal miners, financial institutions, insurance companies, and experts to address long-standing barriers preventing miners from accessing formal financing and to encourage sustainable mining practices.

Opening the workshop, Jewel Kudjawu, Director of the Inter-Sectoral Network at the EPA, underscored the pivotal role of financial institutions in transforming the ASGM sector.

She noted that the initiative not only provides miners with the skills to engage effectively with banks but also helps financial institutions to appreciate the sector’s unique needs.

“Together, we can design sustainable financial solutions that promote formalisation and strengthen responsible supply chains,” she remarked.

Dr. Frank Boateng, a mining finance expert from the University of Mines and Technology, led sessions on financial literacy, business planning, record-keeping, and risk management.

He stressed that sustainable mining anchored in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards is vital for long-term operations and for attracting local and international investment.

On the second day, participants turned their attention to the sector’s risk profile and the potential for tailored products to support miners.

Amanda McSamuel, Head of SME Business at Enterprise Insurance, highlighted opportunities for developing insurance products suited to the realities of artisanal mining.

“This engagement has underscored the importance of building trust and creating solutions that are mutually beneficial,” she explained.

The workshop also explored financing mechanisms to support mercury-free mining technologies, a core objective of the planetGOLD Ghana Project.

By phasing out mercury use, the project seeks to reduce environmental harm while improving miners’ access to markets that demand responsibly sourced gold.

For many participants, the training was a turning point.

“I am excited about this programme,” said Richard Osei of Okutey Mine in the Prestea Huni Valley District.

“I now understand the requirements and processes needed to secure financing and investment from banks and insurance entities. I feel empowered to approach them for support,” he added.

Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the EPA, the planetGOLD Ghana Project is working to address the sector’s most pressing challenges – limited access to finance, environmental degradation, and informal operations. By promoting financial inclusion, responsible supply chains, and mercury-free technologies, the project aims to formalise artisanal mining, protect the environment, and enhance the livelihoods of mining communities across the country.

President John Dramani Mahama delivered a speech at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

In his speech, he raised several concerns about pertinent global issues, which he urged the Assembly to address.

He touched on the ongoing conflict in Gaza which has claimed several lives, the devastating effects of transatlantic slave trade, among other matters.

In this article, GhanaWeb explore three key points President Mahama raised in his address.

Africa’s inclusion on UN security council

President Mahama made a passionate appeal to the United Nations body for a permanent representation of Africa on the UN’s Security Council.

According to him, the current UN structure does not reflect recent global trends.

He added that the UN’s founding charter needs a new identity, stating that the current one is outdated when it comes to representation.

“30 years later, we African leaders are still making the same simple request for a permanent seat on the Security Council with the power of a veto. So, today, Madam President, I stand here in this exact spot and ask the world, if not now, then when? We demand not only a reform of the Security Council, but also a reset of the global financial architecture, which is currently rigged against Africa,” he said.

“There must be a mechanism for the General Assembly to challenge a veto. No single nation should be able to exercise an absolute veto to serve its own interests in a conflict,” he added.

An end to the Gaza conflict

Mahama also condemned the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for an immediate end to the violence and what he described as the “collective punishment” of innocent Palestinian civilians.

He dismissed views that a two-state solution would benefit Hamas; instead, he emphasised that peace must prioritise the suffering of ordinary Palestinians.

“Since then, and I say contrary to the claims of some, a two-state solution would not be a reward for Hamas. It would rather be a retreat for the hundreds of thousands of innocent women, children, and people who are facing collective punishment and forced starvation for no reason other than the fact that they are Palestinians,” President Mahama said.

He also criticised world leaders for what he believes is their reluctance to speak plainly about the atrocities unfolding in Gaza, accusing them of using carefully selected language to avoid addressing the reality.

“For nearly two years, and for the fear of reprisals, we here in this General Assembly have been playing hide and seek with language to find the right words to help us avoid or excuse what we all know is taking place in Gaza.

“But here’s the thing; it doesn’t matter what you call it. If it looks like a duck, it swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, well, then it must be a duck. The crimes in Gaza must stop,” he stated.

“The crimes in Gaza must stop. But, Madam President, I also want to draw particular attention to the conflict in Sudan, which this body has described as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Twelve million people have had to flee their homes,” he added.

Transatlantic slave trade

Mahama described the transatlantic slave trade as “the greatest crime against humanity” and has called on the United Nations and its leaders to formally recognise it as such.

On the back of that, President Mahama announced Ghana’s plans to champion calls for a motion recognising the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity.

“Madame President, the slave trade must be recognised as the greatest crime against humanity. As the African champion on reparations, Ghana intends to introduce a motion in this august body to that effect,” he said.

According to him, the slave trade took away the freedom of millions of people who were forced to leave their countries and made to create wealth for others in the Western world.

President Mahama, on that note, called for reparations to be made to address the devastating effects of the slave trade on Africans and the continent, including the depletion of its natural resources.

“More than 12.5 million Africans were forcibly taken against their will and transported to create wealth for the powerful Western nations. We must demand reparations for the enslavement of our people and the colonization of our land that resulted in the theft of our natural resources as well as the looting of artifacts and other items of cultural heritage that have yet to be returned in total,” he continued.

Mahama further criticised the historical injustice of slave-owning families being compensated by their governments, while formerly enslaved people and their descendants received nothing.

UNGA 80: ‘We are tired of exploitation of Africa’s resources’ – Mahama tells UN

“We recognise the value of our land and the value of our lives, as did our colonizers as well as the governments that happily paid reparations to former slave owners as compensation for the loss of their property,” he stated.

Meanwhile, these statements on global issues have earned the President plaudits from several prominent figures in Ghana and beyond, commending him for standing up and speaking truth to power.

Covid-19 erased two decades of poverty reduction – Mahama admits at UN General Assembly

0

President John Dramani Mahama has admitted that the Covid-19 pandemic, which struck the world five years ago, derailed Ghana’s poverty alleviation efforts.

The unprecedented pandemic devastated global economies, leading to widespread job losses and a sharp rise in the cost of living.

While the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government consistently attributed Ghana’s economic downturn between 2020 and 2022 to the pandemic, then-opposition leader Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) rejected that explanation.

However, speaking at the United Nations General Assembly during a side event dubbed Accra Reset, President Mahama acknowledged that the pandemic had indeed negatively impacted Ghana, particularly its fight against poverty.

“The Covid-19 pandemic erased two decades of poverty reduction in less than two years,” state broadcaster Ghana Television quoted the President as saying on its official Facebook page.

The admission has surprised many commentators, with some recalling how Mahama and the NDC had rejected similar claims by the previous government. Several reactions suggested that the President’s comments had vindicated the position of the Akufo-Addo administration.

Ghana to review broadcasting policy to address digital convergence

0

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation is set to review Ghana’s broadcasting policy framework to better reflect the realities of digital convergence, where radio, television, and internet-based broadcasting increasingly overlap within a unified ecosystem.

This announcement was made on Friday, September 26, by Samuel Nartey George during a high-level media forum held in Accra by the Africa Media Bureau.

He revealed that his ministry will collaborate closely with the Ministry of Government Communications and other key stakeholders to take a thorough and objective review of the current broadcasting bill. The goal is to ensure the legal framework aligns with the complexities and nuances of the modern digital media environment.

“The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation is reviewing Ghana’s broadcasting policy framework to reflect the realities of digital convergence, where radio, television, and internet-based broadcasting increasingly overlap within a single ecosystem.

“In light of this, my ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Government Communications and other key stakeholders to take a dispassionate look at the current broadcasting bill with the view to making it reflective of the nuanced realities of today’s world,” Minister George said.

The forum, organised by the Africa Media Bureau in partnership with Channel One TV and Citi FM, has brought together regulators, policymakers, industry leaders, and technology experts to discuss how Ghana can modernise its broadcasting policies and embrace innovation amid rapid technological changes.

Under the theme “Aligning Policy, Technology and Global Best Practices for a Resilient Media Landscape,” the event focused on how new technologies such as artificial intelligence and 5G, shifting consumer behaviors, and regulatory challenges are reshaping content creation, delivery, and monetisation.

Appietus Hints Of Brewing Tension In Late Daddy Lumba’s Home

Veteran music producer Appietus has hinted at rising tensions between the wives of late Highlife icon Daddy Lumba, warning of possible legal battles if the situation escalates.

In a video shared on Instagram on September 24, 2025, Appietus addressed Priscilla Ofori Atta, popularly known as Odo Broni, the alleged second wife of the legendary musician. He cautioned her over her ongoing disputes with Akosua Serwaa, Daddy Lumba’s alleged first wife.

Speaking during a TikTok live session, Appietus advised Odo Broni to tread carefully, stressing that public confrontations or further provocations could have serious consequences.

He warned that if the matter heads to court, Odo Broni risks not only public embarrassment but also the potential loss of all claims to Daddy Lumba’s properties.

“Anyone advising her is giving her stupid advice, and she shouldn’t listen. Anyone closer to her should tell her to shut up and stop getting Akosua Serwaa angry. They can even go to Otumfuo and speak with him, plead on her behalf, maybe Akosua Serwaa will listen to it,” he said.

“If she takes you to court, they will give her all the properties. Listen to me, Priscilla, don’t make that mistake, or else you will regret it because the woman has power. I am telling you, whoever is giving you such advice is giving you foolish advice. Listen to me,” he added.

“I am angry at you because they are using you. When there is a problem, everyone will run away. In the next year, you will be the only person left, and maybe your children,” he said.

The post, according to the ministry, was shared by one Gertrude Adzo Borklo, who claimed that admission into the prestigious school could be bought.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak, has reacted to the development, acknowledging the severity of such an allegation, adding that a probe has been initiated to ascertain the veracity of the allegation.

“This feeds into a conspiratorial narrative designed to create the false impression that the BECE Computerised School Placement System is for sale. The Ministry views this allegation with the utmost seriousness and has initiated an immediate investigation. We are committed to ensuring that the integrity of the school placement process remains intact.”

The minister, however, added that efforts to contact the author of the post have so far been unsuccessful, as her account was deactivated shortly after publication.

He consequently sent a strong warning to individuals, hiding behind anonymous or ghost accounts, to spread falsehoods.

The Ministry has also indicated that it is working closely with the National Security Secretariat, the Cyber Security Authority, and other relevant agencies to identify and track down persons responsible for such claims.

“We wish to state categorically that the BECE Computerised School Placement System is entirely free of charge. At no point is payment required to access this service.

“We urge the public to assist by reporting any individuals, whether ministry officials or third parties, who solicit money in exchange for placement. Anyone found culpable will face swift and decisive action,” Dr Apaak reiterated.

Residents in Keta voice frustration over PURC’s 1.14% electricity tariff hike

0

The decision has sparked concern about the impact on household budgets and business operations The decision has sparked concern about the impact on household budgets and business operations

Residents in Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, have expressed frustration following the Public Utility Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) approval of a 1.14 per cent increase in electricity tariffs.

The decision has sparked concern about the impact on household budgets and business operations across the municipality and the region.

The PURC has justified the tariff adjustment as necessary to support utility companies in managing operational costs and ensuring sustainable service delivery and the hike was aimed to help providers cope with financial pressures affecting their services.

According to the new tariff structure, residential consumers using 0-300kWh of electricity would pay GH¢180.19/kWh, while non-residential users will face a rate of GH¢202.17/kWh with the adjustments reflecting on PURC’s efforts to balance consumer interests with utility company needs.

George Awudi, a resident of Dzelukope, a suburb of Keta, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said that many residents were worried about the added strain on household finances, particularly those with limited incomes.

“The increase will exacerbate economic hardships faced by many of us ordinary citizens who are already battling with rising cost of living, government must intervene to curb the troubles ahead,” he said.

He explained that the tariff hike had also raised concern for businesses, which have assumed that the increased operational expenses would affect competitiveness and could potentially lead to higher prices for goods and services.

Madam Sese Amegbo, a businesswoman, lamented that the PURC had earlier implemented several tariff adjustments in recent years including 2.45 per cent adjustment in June 2025 in electricity tariffs which highlighted the ongoing challenges in balancing utility sustainability with affordability for consumers.

She said that amidst public discontent, there were growing appeals for government support to mitigate the impact on vulnerable households while some other critics have advocated targeted subsidies or other measures to cushion low-income consumers.

Other individuals such cold store operators, fashion designers, hairdressers, among others, GNA interacted with expressed worry about the new tariff adjustment and appealed to the government to intervene to save their businesses.

They said the country’s economy faced broader challenges, which contributed to higher cost-of-living and pressure and the new electricity tariff increase would affect affordability and economic well-being for many citizens.

Meanwhile, some key factors the PURC said influenced the tariff decisions include inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and rising fuel costs and considered the elements evaluation adjustments as the only method to ensure utilities remain viable.

The PURC also indicated that the ongoing review of tariff structures was to align with economic realities and utility needs, signaling potential future adjustments based on evolving circumstances in the country’s energy sector.

GNA gathered that the PURC was the institution tasked for ensuring fair and sustainable tariffs balance for consumer and provider interests while the commission emphasized transparency in its decision-making processes.

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced the immediate suspension of all boxing activities in Ghana.

The decision taken by the National Sports Authority, in consultation with the Sports Ministry, following the death of boxer Ernest ‘Bahubali’ Akushey.

Ernest Akushey AKA Bahubali passed away on the morning of Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The 32-year-old boxer died barely two weeks after suffering from heavy punches in a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

Former GBA President assessed Bahubali, found him unfit for boxing – Amin Lamptey

Read the full statement from the NSA:

The National Sports Authority (NSA), in consultation with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has, with immediate effect, suspended all boxing activities in Ghana.

This decision follows the tragic passing of professional boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey after his most recent bout. It reflects the joint commitment of the NSA and the Sports Ministry to prioritize the safety, health, and welfare of athletes.

It is worth noting that prior to this unfortunate incident, the NSA and the Ministry, together with key stakeholders in the boxing fraternity, had concluded preparations to implement the recommendations of the Ministerial Committee on Boxing. These include a comprehensive five-year safety and development plan, anchored by the establishment of a nine-member Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the affairs of the sport.

The reforms are designed to strengthen medical, technical, and regulatory procedures, ensuring that when boxing returns, it will operate under safer, more professional, and globally aligned standards.

The NSA and the Sports Ministry therefore calls on all stakeholders – promoters, coaches, officials, athletes, supporters and the media – to fully respect this directive. While the suspension may present immediate challenges, it remains a necessary step to protect lives, preserve the integrity of the sport, and secure its future. It is in line with the committee setup by the Hon. Minister following the death of the Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.

Together with our partners, we remain committed to guiding the safe, responsible, and sustainable return of boxing in Ghana.

UNGA80: President Mahama touts Ghanaians’ achievements in diaspora citing Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Sept 26, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has used his speech at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) Meeting to tout the outstanding achievements of some Ghanaians in the diaspora.

“Let’s tell all the truth. When we speak of migrants, we speak of Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong, a Judge on the US District Court for the Central District of California. She is the first Black female Judge on any of California’s four Federal District Courts. She was born in America to immigrant parents from Ghana,” President Mahama said.

“We speak of Peter Bossman, a medical doctor born in Ghana who moved to the town of Piran in Slovenia in the 1980s. He later became the first Black mayor of Piran, the first Black mayor in Slovenia, and in the whole of Eastern Europe.”

President Mahama mentioned T-Michael, the iconic Ghanaian-Norwegian artist and designer, and the late Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, who was born in Ghana but spent his adulthood in various places in America and Europe.

“These are people who have brought great distinction to the countries that they call home. Just as the migrants and the children of migrants before them did. These are not invaders or criminals,” he said.

President Mahama drew particular attention to the conflict in Sudan, which the world body had described as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

“Twelve million people have had to flee their homes. When we speak of migration, we refer to the 12 million new refugees, whom we, as a global community, should be willing to assist in much the same way that many member nations readily assisted new refugees from Ukraine,” he said.

“Let’s dispense with euphemisms and dog-whistles and speak frankly. It’s not a mystery that when leaders of Western nations complain of their migration problems, they are o en referring to immigrants from the Global South. Many of those migrants are climate refugees.”

President Mahama said interestingly, the Global North emits 75 per cent more greenhouse gases than the Global South.

He said however, the effects of climate change were more severe in the Global South because they lacked the resources to address them effectively.

“So, when the desert encroaches and our villages and towns become unlivable, we are forced to flee,” he said.

He said Warsan Shire, a Somali-British poet born in Kenya to Somalian refugee parents, was London’s first Youth Poet Laureate; stating that she writes in her poem titled “Home”.

“You have to understand that no one puts their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land; No one burns their palms under trains beneath carriages; No one spends days and nights in the stomach of a truck feeding on newspaper unless the miles travelled means something more than journey.”

The President said: “We cannot normalise cruelty. We cannot normalise hatred. We cannot normalize xenophobia and racism. If we are going to tell a story, let’s not tell it slant.”

He attributed the migration of Africans to other parts of the world to reasons such as the impact of climate change and conflicts.

Navigating the political landscape: Asiedu Nketiah’s controversial ‘Thank You Tour’

0

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, national chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC )is widely regarded as a skilled political strategist in Ghana.

As the General Secretary of the NDC, he orchestrated the party’s return to power through the 2008 general election after a period of eight years in opposition and has recently played a crucial role in its resurgence in 2024, also after eight years in opposition.

His impressive track record has prompted significant attention to his current initiative, a “Thank You Tour,” which is stirring debate within the Ghanaian political circles.

The tour commenced in the Eastern Region between 17 and 19 September 2025, spanning 16 constituencies.

Officially, it is presented as an exercise in appreciation.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah has explained that, having led the party’s parliamentary mobilisation during the 2024 campaign, it is only fitting that he returned to these constituencies to thank local executives and grassroots activists whose efforts secured the party’s victories.

His public remarks have emphasised gratitude and recognition rather than personal ambition.

Nonetheless, sections of the media have characterised the initiative as a veiled launch of Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s “2028 presidential campaign”.

Described as the opening phase of a broader national programme intended to cover all 16 regions, the tour’s nationwide scope significantly alters public perceptions and intensifies the controversy surrounding it.

Acts of gratitude/criticisms

Supporters within the NDC have defended the tour.

Wonder Victor Kutor, a member of the NDC’s National Executive Committee (NEC), asserts that the tours are simply acts of gratitude, dismissing allegations of misuse of state resources.

He contends that Mr Asiedu Nketiah can fund the journeys privately and that he is honouring a prior commitment to return to the constituencies post-campaign.

Proponents argue the tours have a practical purpose: they boost morale, strengthen local connections, and reaffirm that activists’ hard work is appreciated.

Conversely, some critics view the initiative with suspicion.

Former Kumbungu MP Ras Mubarak labelled it “unnecessary,” cautioning that it risks undermining President John Mahama’s authority just when unity is paramount for delivering on his new mandate.

Mubarak points out that thank you tours are traditionally the realm of presidential or parliamentary candidates, not the independent purview of a national chairman.

He fears that such actions could blur the lines between party organisation and personal ambition.

Additionally, some youth activists have raised concerns that the tour, while ostensibly about gratitude, may actually serve as a stealthy effort to enhance visibility ahead of a potential presidential bid in 2028.

This critique is further complicated by the context of precedent.

Earlier in the year, President Mahama undertook his own formal thank-you tour after his election victory, which was clearly framed as the expression of gratitude from the leader of the party and the nation, aimed at solidifying his authority.

In contrast, Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s parallel tour appears unconventional and somewhat self-serving.

Had the initiative been framed as part of an official NEC-led project, with prominent participation from the general secretary, president, vice-president, and other senior figures, it could have been perceived as an organisational consolidation effort. Instead, the current chairman-led approach, with minimal involvement from top leaders, gives the impression of a personal agenda.

Visibility

The prospect of continuing the tour into the remaining 15 regions only amplifies these concerns.

In Ghana’s delegate-based political system, nationwide visibility is a valuable asset; face-to-face engagement with constituency executives and grassroots members translates directly into political capital when internal contests arise.

Observers naturally question whether Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s trips are solely about expressing gratitude or if they are also laying groundwork for future political ambitions.

This ambiguity renders the tour particularly sensitive.

Nonetheless, it would be imprudent to overlook the positive aspects of the initiative.

Recognising the contributions of activists can genuinely reinforce morale, strengthen party bonds, and ensure that grassroots supporters are aware their dedication has not gone unnoticed.

Political organisation relies not only on policy, but also on relationships and recognition.

The challenge lies in presenting the act of gratitude appropriately, managing it wisely, and coordinating it sufficiently.

The question is, “If this is a party initiative, why are the other national officers missing?”

Clarity

So, what steps should be taken moving forward? Clarity is essential.

If the tour is indeed meant to be a party initiative, the NEC should formally frame it as such, ensuring visible participation from other senior leaders. Furthermore, transparency regarding funding sources is crucial to dispel doubts about potential state sponsorship.

In conclusion, the ongoing “Thank You Tour” led by Asiedu Nketiah encapsulates the complexities of modern Ghanaian politics.

While the initiative may initially appear as a simple gesture of appreciation, its implications stretch far beyond that.

Balancing gratitude with the political landscape requires careful navigation to maintain party unity and public trust.

As this tour unfolds, it will be vital for all involved to ensure that democracy continues to thrive, grounded in sincere recognition and collective effort.

The World Bank has pushed back against the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration’s long-held narrative that Ghana’s 2022 economic collapse was the result of global turmoil, the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

It insisted that the economic meltdown was “homegrown”.

In its latest 2025 Policy Notes on Ghana, the Bank made clear that while the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine worsened the situation, they were not the root cause.

“The deterioration of global conditions… was not the cause of the 2022 macroeconomic crisis; rather, it merely exposed an economy already beset with deep structural vulnerabilities and precarious macroeconomic conditions,” the report said.

The government has frequently blamed external shocks for the collapse, which saw inflation spiral, the cedi plummet, and the country default on its debt.

But the World Bank said years of weak governance, fiscal indiscipline, and stalled reforms were the real culprits of Ghana’s “dark days”.

Interbank Market: Cedi trades at GH¢12.35 to $1

The bank also argued that the easy access to international credit and expectations of resource windfalls encouraged short-term political decisions at the expense of long-term stability.

The report noted that the cycle of expansionary spending followed by painful corrections, one that has forced Ghana into 17 IMF programs over the past 68 years, is damaging.

“Sudden macroeconomic stops and crises have led the country to request a record number of IMF programs, remaining under active IMF support for 40 out of its 68 years of history,” the Bank said.

The report also noted that more than 800,000 people were pushed into poverty in the aftermath of the 2022 crisis, with per capita incomes stuck at around US$2,200 for over a decade.

Today, more than a quarter of Ghanaians live below the poverty line, it noted.

Looking ahead, the Bank also raised alarms about Ghana’s fiscal management in the 2024 election year.

It flagged unbudgeted spending commitments of roughly US$4.8 billion, equivalent to 5.7% of GDP, much of it accumulated outside official financial systems.

“Spending indiscipline poses a critical challenge…undermining efforts to maintain fiscal discipline and compromising long-term sustainability,” the report cautioned.

Also, the energy sector arrears still cost around 2% of GDP annually, while COCOBOD’s debts reached US$1.8 billion in 2024, with interventions distorting markets and hurting farmers.

The bank warned that Ghana now stands at a critical crossroads, and temporary fixes will not be enough.

“There is an urgent need to signal a clear break from the past and a commitment to change… Success will ultimately be measured by the ability of the government to regain the trust of its citizens.”

Its recommendations are focused on restoring fiscal discipline, broadening the tax base, reforming state-owned enterprises, and enhancing governance.

Without decisive reforms, the World Bank cautions, Ghana risks remaining trapped in its cycle of crisis and bailouts for decades to come.

Rihanna, A$AP Rocky Welcome Third Child

Rihanna and her new baby

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have welcomed their third child, a baby girl named Rocki Irish Mayers, born on September 13, 2025. The pop superstar announced the news in an Instagram post on Wednesday, sharing a photo of herself holding the newborn dressed in pink.

Rocki joins big brothers RZA Athelston Mayers and Riot Rose Mayers, making her the couple’s third child in just a few years. Fans of the singer, known as the Rihanna Navy, had long speculated the baby would be a girl, and the reveal was met with excitement online.

Hints about the baby’s gender surfaced earlier this year when A$AP Rocky attended the Smurfs premiere in Brussels. Holding a Smurfette doll, he admitted in an interview that he and Rihanna were hoping for a daughter. “It is, man. It is,” he laughed when asked if this was the girl they had been waiting for.

In a recent interview with Elle, the rapper shared his dream of being a “girl dad.” He explained that while their first two pregnancies were a mix of surprises, this one felt different. “I feel like it’s going to be a girl. This pregnancy is so different from the other two. I hope it’s a baby girl, man. I need that,” he said.

With Rocki’s arrival, Rihanna and Rocky’s growing family continues to capture the spotlight. And if her stylish parents are any indication, baby Rocki Irish is already set to become one of the most fashionable kids around.

Beyond Politics, Trivialities –

0

The negative health impact of illegal mining or galamsey are beginning to dawn on Ghanaians.

The water bodies are muddied and highly polluted even as the forests lose their cover.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) have added their voices to the call for action against the illegality because of the health implications of the practice.

A couple of days ago, the latest detail about the impact of the illegality hit Ghanaians in the face. Scary as it is, the time to act on galamsey has never been so urgent.

The arsenic levels in Konongo Zongo soils have been found to be over 40,000 percent higher than the safe limit, according to Pure Earth and Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Ghana.

That is what we know for now; further studies, there is no doubt, would reveal more.

Our favourite cocoyam leaves or kontomire will soon be too dangerous for consumption as these too have been said to contain levels of mercury.

With the heads of tilapia contaminated with mercury according to an earlier report, this fish species harvested in galamsey areas are no longer safe for consumption.

To therefore think that the galamsey issue is a ping-pong game being played by the two dominant political parties is to be toying with a critical subject which borders upon life and death.

The need for medical examination of children being born in Konongo Zongo as well as other galamsey infested areas cannot be overlooked. The results when these studies are commissioned and completed will shock Ghanaians.

With arsenic level in the soil in a community hitting the level as aforementioned, is an indication of how irresponsible we have become as a people.

It can only be imagined the health fallouts from this disclosure upon the people of Konongo Zongo.  The area has many galamseyers, and it is not surprising the results coming out from studies carried out. Many of the youth in the area having been so exposed to mercury and other chemicals of the trade need proper screening to isolate health conditions they definitely have contracted.

With renal cases on the rise even among children, the times cannot be normal.

Matters have gone beyond the media discussions and demand practical tackling of the health and social anomaly.

There are no dividends related to galamsey which are more important than the health of the people.

The recklessness with which the environment is being destroyed by the illegal miners calls for immediate action.

It is unfortunate that some of those who shouted on rooftops under a year ago against galamsey have gone mute. Those with conscience have however stood up against and putting blame where it belongs.

The future of this country could not be more at stake than now when these scary health implications of the illegal mining activities of the wicked persons play on.

Even more worrying is the suspicion that the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is the official purchaser of the gold sourced from the illegal miners. That is adequate reason to conclude that galamsey has dug in and would require paradigm shift to uproot it or reduce it to the barest minimum.

Students urged to desist from drug use

By Gifty Amofa

C/R, Sept.20, GNA – Students have been advised against drug usage as that could lead to addiction and subsequently jeopardize their future.

Mr Leonard Edem Cosmos, President of the MoFCOM  Scholars’ Alumni Association of Ghana (MoSAAG) who gave the advice said they should avoid any form of negative peer influence.

He encouraged them to rather focus on their academics to become useful citizens of the Country.

It was during a Mentorship programme to promote the need for education among young people as well as challenge them to strive for excellence organised by the beneficiaries of the People’s Republic China’s Ministry of Commerce scholarship, known as the Ministry of Commerce Alumni Association Ghana (MoSAAG).

The Group also donated over three thousand exercise books, in addition to a quantity of pencils, pens, erasers to enhance teaching and learning at the Moree Junction Islamic School in the Central Region.

The President of MoSAAG said the gesture formed part of the Association’s annual corporate social responsibility sponsored by the Chinese Government.

MoSAAG since it’s establishment had carried out several community impact activities such as capacity building of members, donation to flood victims, health screening and digging of boreholes across Ghana, Mr Cosmos said.

He said all these were done to provide relief to the underprivileged communities.

The President called on the public and organisations to help the deprived in the society.

He reaffirmed the Association’s commitment in promoting bilateral relations between Ghana and China whilst fostering the personal and professional development of its members.

Alhaji Haruna Mohammed Abubakar, the head of the beneficiary school thanked the Association for it’s benevolence.

He described the occasion as historic, saying it was also timely as a relief to parents  especially as the children had begun a new term.

Alhaji Abubakar appealed for infrastructural support for the school.

Cedi trades at GH¢12.35 to $1

0

The Ghana cedi has crossed the GH¢12 mark on the interbank exchange market.

This is the first time since May 2025, following a period of consistent appreciation against the US dollar.

As of Friday, September 26, 2025, Bank of Ghana published rates indicate that the cedi is trading at GH¢12.30 to the dollar, reflecting renewed pressure on the local currency amid persistent economic challenges and high demand for foreign exchange.

Despite headline inflation dropping marginally, the cedi continues to struggle on both the interbank and forex markets, depreciating steadily against the dollar.

The depreciation is expected to impact fuel prices at the pump in the upcoming pricing windows, increase the cost of living, and likely complicate the government’s quest to achieve single-digit inflation by the end of the year.

Here’s how the cedi is faring on the BoG interbank market as of 8:00 AM, September 26, 2025:

• Dollar – Buying at GH¢12.34, Selling at GH¢12.35

• Pound – Buying at GH¢16.48, Selling at GH¢16.49

• Euro – Buying at GH¢ 14.41, Selling at GH¢14.42

We can’t conclude that Bahubali’s death was caused by boxing – Mohammed Amin Lamptey

0

Former GBA Communications Director, Mohammed Amin Lamptey Former GBA Communications Director, Mohammed Amin Lamptey

Former Communications Director of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Mohammed Amin Lamptey has said that the death of boxer Ernest ‘Bahubali’ Akushey cannot be attributed to boxing.

Reacting to the death of Bahubali, Mohammed Amin Lamptey said the public cannot conclude that boxing caused the boxer’s death because he died 11 days after his fight against Jacob Dickson.

“He lost a fight and was suspended for 28 days so that he can rest and regain his strength. Because the rule says if a boxer loses a bout through TKO, the person should be made to go and rest.”

“Boxing you go, win or lose and there is nothing wrong with that. Bahubali lost his last fight in the 8th round and died after 11 days. So if you want to analyze what happened to him, you cannot just conclude that Bahubali’s death was caused by boxing,” Amin Lamptey said in an interview with Happy FM.

Meanwhile, the National Sports Authority has suspended all boxing activities in Ghana following the death of boxer Ernest ‘Bahubali’ Akushey, in consultation with the Sports Ministry.

In 2022, tragedy struck the former MTN Hitmaker contestant twice as he lost his father and brother within the space of three months.

“I Have No Problem With the Calls for My Arrest” – Charles Bissue

0

According to a report by GhanaWeb, Charles Bissue, Director of Operations for Kennedy Agyapong’s presidential campaign, has welcomed the decision to move corruption allegations against him to the court.

He described the development as the right step, noting that it follows what he believes were unfair criticisms and accusations.

According to him, the case reaching the courts brings a sense of relief, particularly after he came under pressure from individuals within his own party.

Bissue maintained confidence in his innocence, stressing that he has not committed any offense.

In April, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) brought criminal charges against him. Bissue, who once served as a presidential staffer and Secretary to the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), is facing several counts linked to corruption and misuse of office for personal benefit.

The OSP alleges that he accepted GH¢35,000 from Benjamin Adjapong to hasten the renewal of an expired mining license for ORR Resources Limited, allegedly bypassing due process at the IMCIM.

Addressing public concerns regarding his status, Bissue stated that he has no issue with people demanding his arrest.

He noted that while some officials have questioned why he remains free, such views are often based on assumptions rather than facts.

Bissue said, “I have no problem with the calls for my arrest. Mustapha Gbande, a presidential staffer, has expressed worry over why I am walking around and not arrested. That is an opinion he has expressed.”

He emphasized that the appropriate state institutions are responsible for handling such matters.

Bissue further explained that he has been under scrutiny for almost eight years by various bodies, including the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), and the OSP.

He recalled that the police had previously cleared him of any misconduct.

He also pointed out that he has always made himself available for investigations.

According to him, he is even more satisfied that the current trial is taking place under the opposition administration, as this would counter claims of political interference.

He expressed hope that once the case is concluded in his favor, the outcome will be accepted by all.

GRDA defends $447m Tema–Mpakadan project, blames GRCL mismanagement

0

The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has rejected claims by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Railway Workers’ Union of the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) linking salary arrears to the commencement of operations on the new Tema–Mpakadan Standard Gauge Railway Line.

On September 24, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) cautioned the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) against commencing train operations without first addressing unresolved labour concerns.

The warning followed GRDA’s announcement that passenger services on the Tema–Mpakadan corridor will begin on October 1, 2025.

Earlier, on September 17, the Railway Workers’ Union had formally notified the Ghana Police Service of its plan to stage a nationwide strike and peaceful picketing on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

However, in a statement, the GRDA described the unions’ threats of strike action as misplaced, warning that attempts to “conflate GRCL’s internal management failures with the lawful mandate of the GRDA” risk undermining a $447 million national investment.

The GRDA stressed that under the Railways Act, 2008 (Act 779), it holds the legal mandate to develop and regulate railway assets, including operationalising new lines.

It explained that the Tema–Mpakadan project, completed in December 2024, is now set to begin proof-of-revenue services on October 1, 2025, in line with international standards and government directives.

According to the Authority, GRCL has no licence to operate on the line, lacks the rolling stock for standard gauge operations, and has not trained staff to qualify for operations.

It added that 17 entities have already applied for operating licences under the open access model, without GRCL among them.

The Authority also criticised GRCL for years of mismanagement, including defective procurement, derailments on the Western Line, the illegal sale of assets, and poor maintenance practices despite heavy government investment.

It posed a series of accountability questions to the company regarding the use of past funds, the sale of equipment, and questionable contracts.

The GRDA further noted that acts of vandalism against signalling and point machines had been recorded following union threats, cautioning that TUC and its affiliates would be held accountable for any sabotage.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Authority said the Tema–Mpakadan line is a strategic national asset designed to link Tema Port to Buipe via the Volta Lake and to Burkina Faso through the Tema–Ouagadougou transport corridor.

“The GRDA remains resolute in fulfilling its mandate and safeguarding the nation’s investment for the benefit of all Ghanaians,” the statement concluded.

Aboagye Accuses NDC Over Galamsey Blame Shifting

0

Former presidential staffer Dennis Miracles Aboagye has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of consistently shifting blame regarding illegal small-scale mining while failing to confront the galamsey menace when given opportunities to address the crisis.

Aboagye’s criticism follows recent revelations by Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah that the government’s intensified crackdown on galamsey has resulted in 1,400 arrests within eight months, contrasting sharply with 800 arrests recorded over nearly three years under the previous administration.

The former staffer, who served under the Akufo-Addo administration, outlined a pattern of blame-shifting that he claims spans multiple NDC administrations. According to his analysis, the NDC shifted galamsey blame to their own 2010 administration during 2016 campaigns, and currently attempts to shield that same administration by directing blame toward the 2017 New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

“It is becoming obvious, the NDC have no record of confronting the Galamsey menace when they get the chance; it’s always about blame shifting. No wonder they are asking for evidence even in the face of obvious escalated Galamsey and polluted river bodies,” Aboagye wrote in a Facebook post addressing the ongoing controversy.

Minister Buah announced the arrest figures during a Wednesday appearance on Ghana Television (GTV), emphasizing that the current strategy delivers measurable results compared to previous approaches. The minister highlighted additional enforcement achievements including the seizure of 440 excavators and more than 800 changfans, while mobilizing Blue Water Guards in key regions.

The Minister revealed that part of the equipment confiscated from illegal mining operations has been reassigned for state use, including the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, demonstrating practical utilization of seized assets in the fight against illegal mining activities.

Beyond enforcement measures, Minister Buah stressed that the government is creating sustainable alternatives for miners seeking to operate legally. “We are also now providing critical alternatives, and we are saying that if you want to do mining, we are going to give you the training and build your capacity to work with large-scale mining companies,” he explained during the television interview.

Responding directly to the minister’s arrest statistics, Aboagye characterized the figures as clear evidence of escalated galamsey activities under the current administration. He specifically addressed Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu, stating: “This is another clear evidence of escalated Galamsey in our country. 1,400 arrests in just 8 months and yet we still have higher turbidity and worst polluted river bodies.”

The former presidential staffer suggested that underlying motivations continue driving individuals toward illegal mining ventures despite increased enforcement efforts. “Something is motivating the people to rush into this criminal venture. Let’s look into that!” he emphasized in his response to the arrest figures.

Recent reports indicate that Aboagye has been actively presenting what he claims is evidence of aggressive illegal mining in forest reserves across the country, while consistently criticizing the NDC government’s approach to combating galamsey.

The political exchange reflects broader tensions between Ghana’s major parties over environmental protection strategies and accountability for the galamsey crisis that continues threatening water bodies and forest reserves nationwide.

Aboagye called for unity in addressing the environmental challenge, writing: “More reasons why we should have a united voice and call on our government to take decisive actions in dealing with the menace.” His statement suggests that political divisions may be hindering effective responses to the illegal mining crisis.

The debate occurs as environmental activists and civil society organizations intensify calls for emergency measures to address worsening water pollution and forest degradation caused by illegal mining activities across multiple regions.

Minister Buah’s enforcement statistics aim to demonstrate government commitment to tackling galamsey, though critics argue that arrest numbers alone do not necessarily translate to reduced illegal mining activities or improved environmental conditions.

Political observers note that Aboagye previously cautioned the NDC against politicizing galamsey issues, arguing that the problem affects all Ghanaians regardless of party affiliation, though current exchanges suggest continued political divisions over responsibility and solutions.

The government has implemented various strategies including the deployment of military personnel to mining sites, revocation of mining licenses, and prosecution of illegal miners, while also attempting to provide alternative livelihoods for affected communities.

Environmental groups continue monitoring river bodies and forest reserves, documenting ongoing damage while calling for comprehensive solutions that address both enforcement and underlying socioeconomic factors driving illegal mining participation.

The political disagreement over galamsey responsibility reflects broader challenges in Ghana’s democratic discourse, where environmental crises often become entangled with partisan politics rather than generating unified national responses to shared challenges.

As the debate continues, affected communities in mining areas await concrete improvements in water quality and forest protection, regardless of which political party receives credit for successful interventions or blame for ongoing challenges.

The exchange between Aboagye and government officials illustrates persistent tensions over political accountability in addressing environmental challenges that require sustained commitment across multiple administrations and political cycles.

Gov’t can’t keep subsidising DTT operations alone

The Minister for Communication, Digital Innovation and Technology, Sam George, has announced that the government will soon engage stakeholders to develop a sustainable funding arrangement for the country’s Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) transmission network.

Established in 2016 under the leadership of then Minister Edward Omane Boamah, the DTT platform was designed with a cost-sharing strategy.

TV stations were to enjoy free access in the first year, pay 50% of fees in the second year, 75% in the third year, and eventually bear the full cost.

The minister, while speaking at the “Broadcasting at the Crossroads” forum organised by the Africa Media Bureau at the Alisa Hotel on Friday, September 26, 2025, noted that the policy was not fully implemented.

An attempt, he said, by a previous administration to introduce fees was challenged in court by the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA).

As a result, the over 45 stations currently using the platform have not paid for operations and maintenance for nearly a decade.

The Minister stressed that the government has been carrying the entire cost of running the platform, effectively subsidising private broadcasters, a situation he described as unsustainable.

“The free ride bus is running out of gas, and we need to find a sustainable means of fueling the DTT bus,” he said.

Sam George added that with demand for slots on the platform increasing, the government is working on expansion.

At the same time, it will initiate discussions with broadcasters on how they can contribute to keeping the service operational and financially viable.

A stakeholder meeting will soon be convened to agree on a practical cost-sharing model to sustain the DTT ecosystem.
