The Greater Accra Constituency Organizers Caucus of the National Democratic Congress, have admonished the government to tread cautiously in going after businessmen purported to have committed wrong.
They gave this admonishing on the back of the government’s flagship economic policy programme, the 24-hour work policy, which they argue will need businessmen to support in order for it to succeed.
In 2025, native styles for boys continue to evolve, blending rich cultural heritage with contemporary fashion trends. This fusion creates a unique and dynamic look that is both timeless and fresh, allowing boys to embrace their roots while staying on top of the latest fashion. Whether for casual wear, formal events, or cultural celebrations, native styles for boys in 2025 offer a diverse range of options that reflect the growing influence of African, Caribbean, and Indigenous traditions in global fashion.
One of the standout trends for boys this year is the use of bold, colorful fabrics. Ankara and Kente fabrics, known for their intricate patterns and vibrant colors, are popular choices for shirts, trousers, and even casual jackets. These fabrics are often seen in modern cuts that feature clean lines and simple, yet stylish designs, making them wearable for both everyday outfits and special occasions. The use of geometric and floral patterns on these fabrics adds a fresh twist to traditional clothing, creating an elegant yet playful look for boys.
In addition to fabric choices, the 2025 native style for boys embraces versatility. A native-inspired shirt paired with well-fitted jeans or chinos is perfect for a casual day out, while a full traditional ensemble, including a dashiki or agbada for boys, is ideal for weddings, cultural festivals, or formal family events. This ability to mix and match pieces makes native wear adaptable to various occasions, offering boys a variety of looks for different settings.
Accessories also play a significant role in the native styles for boys in 2025. Beaded necklaces, bracelets, and hats often accompany the outfits, providing a finishing touch that enhances the overall appearance. Traditional footwear such as leather sandals, slippers, or woven shoes add comfort and complete the look.
Another exciting trend is the incorporation of modern elements, such as leather accents or contemporary tailoring, into traditional garments. This allows boys to wear native styles with a touch of streetwear influence, making the outfits both stylish and easy to incorporate into everyday life.
Ultimately, the latest native styles for boys in 2025 emphasize a perfect balance between cultural pride and modern fashion. These designs not only celebrate the rich history and craftsmanship of traditional clothing but also allow boys to express their unique sense of style while honoring their heritage. Whether opting for a casual look or a more formal one, native-inspired fashion offers something for every occasion in 2025.
Lightning Kills Police Officer during Heavy Downpour

Godfred Dapaah, a 25-year-old police constable nicknamed Toner, was hit and killed by lightning while on the phone with his girlfriend in Cape Coast, in the Central Region of Ghana.
According to reports, the painful incident took place during a heavy downpour on Saturday, 10th May, 2025.
Some eyewitnesses said Constable Dapaah was having a protracted phone discussion when lightning hit, killing him instantaneously.
His premature demise has generated sadness on social media, with friends and colleagues lamenting the loss of a committed young police officer.
Some people wondered what caused the lightning to hit the police officer.
Some have even connected his death to spiritual problems, while others feel that lightning is a natural phenomenon that may hit a human being at any time and kill him or her.
Some experts went on to advise people that no matter how crucial a phone call seemed, it is critical to avoid using mobile phones during strong rainstorms, particularly outside.
They said instead of doing anything dangerous, we should prioritize our safety.
Dr. Sharif Mahmud Khalid, Economic Policy Adviser to Ghana’s Vice President, has characterized the nation’s economic situation inherited by the current administration as severely distressed, citing unprecedented challenges that required immediate intervention.
Speaking frankly on a morning news program, Dr. Khalid outlined the gravity of the situation: “We assumed office facing an overheated economy with every indicator in the red. The central bank was recording losses, and the domestic debt exchange program had reached pension funds – traditionally considered blue-chip investments. When debt restructuring touches pensions, you’ve reached economic bedrock.”
The economic adviser attributed these conditions to what he described as irresponsible borrowing practices under previous leadership, specifically mentioning Eurobond issuances that failed to produce tangible development outcomes. “Rather than visible infrastructure or productive investments, we inherited a legacy of bond signing ceremonies at the Finance Ministry,” he remarked.
Addressing criticism about the current government claiming credit for economic improvements, Dr. Khalid maintained: “Our focus isn’t on taking bows but on implementing necessary reforms. We’ve made tough commitments – to the debt exchange program, IMF engagement, and strict fiscal discipline. Any economic improvements must be understood within this context of fundamental restructuring.”
The comments come as Ghana continues implementation of its $3 billion IMF Extended Credit Facility program, with recent reviews showing some stabilization in macroeconomic indicators. However, Dr. Khalid’s analysis suggests the administration views Ghana’s economic recovery as an ongoing process requiring sustained discipline, rather than a completed achievement.
Economic analysts note that while such blunt assessments from government advisers may spark political debate, they reflect the challenging policy environment facing many debt-distressed emerging markets in the current global economic climate. The remarks also underscore the administration’s attempt to manage expectations about the pace and nature of Ghana’s economic recovery.

Captain Smart Fires Back at Nana Ama McBrown Over Exit Speculations
News Hub Creator29min
Veteran broadcaster Captain Smart has hit back at rumours surrounding his departure from Onua TV, publicly calling out actress and media personality Nana Ama McBrown for allegedly celebrating his exit.
In a heated Facebook Live session, Captain Smart clarified that his absence from the station is only a temporary hiatus and vowed to return stronger than ever. He said he was unsettled by reports that McBrown had rejoiced at his leave-taking. “Who bore this animal? McBrown started well, but she’s too happy because I’m just taking a break,” he declared. “I will resume very soon—get ready for me!”
The exchange has reignited speculation over the reasons behind Captain Smart’s time away from Onua TV. Some insiders attribute his break to burnout after years of daily programming; others speculate he is preparing for a fresh political bid. Regardless, he reassured loyal viewers that his signature blend of hard-hitting commentary and engaging interviews will be back on air in short order.
Nana Ama McBrown has not yet responded to Captain Smart’s remarks, and representatives for Onua TV have declined to comment on internal staffing decisions. Meanwhile, fans on social media remain divided: some commend Captain Smart’s assertive stance, while others question whether McBrown’s reaction was misreported or misunderstood.
As tensions between the two high-profile media figures simmer, audiences across Ghana are awaiting Captain Smart’s return—and the next chapter in this unfolding media saga.
Kofi Owusu Aduonum, husband of Ghanaian media personality Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, has hailed his wife as a heroine despite her second unsuccessful attempt to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest individual singing marathon.
In a heartfelt piece, Kofi Aduonum praised her courage, stating, “Bebe (Afua Asantewaa Aduonum) as I fondly refer to you, to say you have demonstrated bravery in your two successive Guinness World Records (GWR) attempts is an understatement.”
The GWR disqualified Asantewaa’s 121-hour, 39-minute Singathon, held from December 21 to 25, 2024, at Heroes’ Park, Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, on May 8, 2025, citing a violation of rest break rules, specifically a 15-minute break when only 10 minutes were accrued.
Despite this, Kofi wrote, “The recent results- GWR citing failure to adhere to the five minutes break as the reason for not handing you the certification notwithstanding, I still consider you as my heroine.” He added, “For a woman, and a mother of three for that matter to embark on such a herculean task deserves a pat on her shoulder.”
Kofi detailed the grueling logistics, noting, “The enormity of the attempt had a toll on me and has still not recovered from the sleepless nights. I made sure, what she will eat, drink, wear as well bathing was done within the limited five minutes.”
Preparations according to Kofi Aduonum involved multiple Accra-Kumasi trips, media tours with outlets like Akoma FM and Kesben FM, and securing the venue with support from the Ashanti Region National Sports Authority.
A key moment he noted was their meeting with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who offered blessings after initial challenges.
Addressing past criticism following Asantewaa’s 2023 attempt, Kofi apologized for any miscommunication that led to cyberbullying, particularly over perceived ingratitude toward former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s support.
He clarified, “Our presence at Dr Bawumia’s house after the first attempt to say thank you was enough evidence of how grateful we were.”
Marking Asantewaa’s birthday and Mother’s Day on May 11, 2025, he wrote, “You have been such a lovely friend and a great personality… happy birthday and happy Mothers Day.”
Despite the GWR outcome, Kofi also saluted Asantewaa’s determination to promote Ghanaian music globally.
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reiterated that the President John Dramani Mahama-led government is building an educational system that leaves no learner behind.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister at the Relief and Aid International Scholarship Awards Ceremony, the Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, stated that the gathering is not just a celebration of academic excellence but a reaffirmation of a collective commitment to equitable access to quality education.
“The theme, ‘Beyond the Aid, Unveiling the Future,’ speaks powerfully to the need for partnerships and innovation that go beyond temporary support to build long-term resilience and opportunity for our youth.
“Relief and Aid International has consistently demonstrated that non-governmental actors are indispensable in driving community development and educational empowerment,” Dr. Apaak stated.
He noted that the scholarship interventions by Relief and Aid International are not only removing financial barriers but also igniting hope, unlocking potential, and fostering service-oriented leadership in the next generation.
“This aligns closely with the Government of Ghana’s education agenda: to provide inclusive, equitable, and relevant education that empowers every Ghanaian to thrive in a knowledge-based economy. From Free SHS to technical and vocational education reforms, from curriculum transformation to teacher development, we are building a system that leaves no learner behind,” Dr. Apaak emphasized.
He continued: “I am particularly heartened to learn that among today’s awardees are future doctors, nurses, engineers, educators, and innovators. We are proud of you, and we urge you to see this support not only as a reward but as a responsibility—to serve, to lead, and to uplift others.”
He added, “As we ‘unveil the future,’ let us continue to invest in partnerships that combine government policy with civil society innovation.”
According to him, the Ministry of Education is open to further engagement with Relief and Aid International on knowledge sharing, research, and targeted support that strengthens learning outcomes, especially at the community level.
Participants at the Good Laboratory Practices training programme
The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), in collaboration with the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), is hosting a regional training in Accra on Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) for conducting supervised field trials of crops.
The two-week training, which began last Monday, aims to enhance the continent’s technical capacity to generate credible scientific data on pesticide residues in crops to improve food safety standards. This is essential for establishing Codex Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs), crucial for protecting consumer health and promoting international trade.
The training is funded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under its Technical Cooperation Programme. It forms part of the regional project RAF5091, “Enhancing Human and Analytical Capacities for Food Safety Standards.”
Scientists drawn from 18 African countries are participating in the training. They include Ghana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Congo, Egypt, Eswatini, Ethiopia, and Kenya. The rest are Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Togo, and Zimbabwe.
Speaking at the opening, the Technical Officer for the IAEA project, Mr. James Sasanya, expressed gratitude to the Government of Ghana, GAEC, and GSA for hosting the training.
He noted that the IAEA’s support to African countries under the project is aimed at helping generate accurate and reliable data that informs international food safety standards.
“Without scientific data, standards can become technical trade barriers. Countries that do not participate in data generation risk being sidelined in decisions that affect their food systems and economies,” he said.
Mr Sasanya called for stronger commitment to good laboratory practices, regional partnerships, and collaboration with nation states that have made significant progress in data-driven food safety systems.
He explained that the IAEA’s four-year food safety project, launched in 2024, supports training in areas including pesticide residues, veterinary drug residues, mycotoxins, and toxic metals.
Mr. Sasanya acknowledged key partnerships with the Minor Use Foundation, among others, and stressed the importance of institutional support and the nomination of suitable participants to maximise project outcomes.
He further noted that the project offers assistance in human capacity development and procurement of specialised equipment and laboratory supplies to help the region generate relevant data.
The Director-General of GAEC, Professor Samuel Boakye Dampare, in a speech read on his behalf by the Director of Schools at GAEC, Professor Joseph Richmond Fianko, said that Ghana was honoured to host scientists from across the continent for such an important initiative.
He underscored the need for harmonised food safety standards across Africa, stressing that such alignment was essential for the continent to remain competitive in global trade.
“We must work together to ensure that the continent develops systems that meet international requirements,” he said.
Prof. Dampare wished the participants a productive and rewarding training experience.
The Director-General of the GSA, Professor Alex Dodoo, also urged African scientists to play a more active role in shaping national and regional policy.
He encouraged them to go beyond academic research and actively advocate for science-based standards, stating:
“Scientists must speak up, shape policies, and not operate only within the confines of research journals.”
“In today’s transactional world, where multilateralism is giving way to national interest, scientific evidence and strategic communication are more important than ever. We must emulate countries like India, which over the past 30 years have prioritised self-reliance and scientific development,” he added.
The training is expected to foster stronger regional cooperation and empower African nations to play a more influential role in shaping global food safety standards. The collaborative engagement of participating countries underscores a shared commitment to building a resilient, science-driven regulatory framework across the continent.

According to Ghanaweb report, Celebrated Ghanaian broadcaster, Captain Smart, has debunked widespread rumors claiming he has resigned from Onua TV, affirming that he is only taking a temporary break from his role at the station.
The media personality, known for his fearless and controversial commentary, clarified his status during a recent appearance, assuring his fans and critics alike that he remains part of the Onua TV team and has no intentions of exiting the media space.
“I haven’t resigned. I’m just on a short break,” he stated, responding to weeks of speculation sparked by his absence from television screens. His clarification comes amid social media buzz, which intensified after fellow presenter Nana Ama McBrown was seen laughing in a video related to discussions about Captain Smart’s hiatus. Some viewers interpreted her reaction as subtle shade, leading to further speculation about internal tensions at the media house.
Addressing the rumors head-on, Captain Smart indicated that he continues to be under scrutiny despite his current off-air status. In what appeared to be a pointed remark to McBrown, he said, “Get ready for me,” suggesting that his return will be as fiery and provocative as ever.
The exchange, though indirect, has fueled public discourse about possible behind-the-scenes conflicts at Onua TV. However, no official comment has been made by McBrown or management at the station regarding the alleged friction.
Despite the gossip, Captain Smart remained focused on his brand of activism and fearless journalism. He reassured his followers that his comeback will bring more of the hard-hitting commentary that earned him a loyal following.
“I’m not done yet. Ghana needs truth now more than ever,” he said, hinting that his return could coincide with major political commentary ahead of the country’s next election cycle.
A ceasefire between India and Pakistan appears to have held overnight into Sunday, after the two nations accused each other of “violations” just hours after a deal was reached.
Days of cross-border military strikes had preceded the US-brokered deal, marking the worst military confrontation between the two rivals in decades.
US President Donald Trump praised India and Pakistan’s leaders for agreeing the ceasefire in fresh comments on Sunday morning, saying millions of people could have died without it.
This comes after explosions were heard in Indian-administered Kashmir hours after the deal was announced, with both sides accusing each other of violations.
The use of drones, missiles and artillery started when India struck targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, in response to a deadly militant attack in Pahalgam last month. Pakistan denies any involvement.
US President Donald Trump announced the “full and immediate” ceasefire on his Truth Social Platform on Saturday. He said it had been brokered by the US.
Pakistan’s foreign minister later confirmed the agreement had been reached by the two countries, adding that “three dozen countries” were involved in the diplomacy.
But hours after the announcement, residents – and BBC reporters – in the main Indian-administered Kashmiri cities of Srinagar and Jammu reported hearing explosions and seeing flashes in the sky.
Indian Foreign Secretary Misri accused Pakistan of “repeated violations” of the deal, and said his country’s armed forces would give “an appropriate response”.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Pakistan remained committed to implementing the deal, “notwithstanding the violations being committed by India in some areas”, and said troops on the ground should “exercise restraint”.
Kashmir is claimed in full by both India and Pakistan, but administered only in part by each since they were partitioned following independence from the UK in 1947.
It has been a flashpoint between the two nuclear-armed nations and they have fought two wars over it.
Confirming the ceasefire, India’s external affairs minister S Jaishankar said the two nations had “worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action”.
“India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so,” he added.
Later, in an address to the nation, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the ceasefire had been reached “for the benefit of everybody”.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said following the announcement that India and Pakistan had agreed to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.
He said he and US Vice-President JD Vance had spent 48 hours with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including their respective Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif.
In a further Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump repeated praise for India and Pakistan’s leaders for understanding it was “time to stop the current aggression”.
“I am proud that the USA was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision,” he added.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he welcomed “all efforts to de-escalate the conflict”.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the UK has been “engaged” in talks for “some days”, with Foreign Secretary David Lammy speaking to both sides.
“I’m pleased to see today that there’s a ceasefire,” Sir Keir said. “The task now is to make sure that that is enduring and is lasting.”
The recent fighting came after two weeks of tension following the killing of 26 tourists in the resort town of Pahalgam.
Survivors of the 22 April attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, which killed 25 Indians and one Nepali national, said the militants had singled out Hindu men.
The Indian defence ministry said its strikes this week were part of a “commitment” to hold “accountable” those responsible for the attack. Pakistan described them as “unprovoked”.
Pakistan said Indian air strikes and cross-border fire since Wednesday had killed 36 people in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, while India’s army reported at least 21 civilians deaths from Pakistani shelling.
Fighting intensified overnight on Friday, with both countries accusing each other of targeting airbases and other military sites.

Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, has summoned Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, after a video went viral allegedly showing him giving an undisclosed amount of U.S. dollars to Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist.
According to a report by citifmonline.com, Gyamfi has been called to explain the circumstances surrounding the transaction, which has sparked widespread public criticism and raised concerns about the ethical conduct of public officials.
The video, which has been widely shared on social media, appears to show Gyamfi in a private meeting with Nana Agradaa. Although the purpose and details of the cash handover remain unclear, the sight of a high-ranking public official providing funds to a controversial religious figure has fueled public suspicion and backlash.
Critics have accused Gyamfi of violating President John Dramani Mahama’s recently introduced Code of Conduct for Public Officials, which was part of broader efforts to fight corruption and restore public trust in government institutions.
In response, Sammy Gyamfi issued a statement on Sunday, May 11, expressing regret over the incident. He described the gesture as a private act of compassion that, unfortunately, became public.
Nonetheless, due to the political sensitivity and potential reputational damage, the Chief of Staff is said to be addressing the matter with urgency.

She described her emotional turmoil, stating, “It has broken me,” while emphasizing her resolve to continue advocating for fairness: “We cannot continue excusing the exploitation of artists in this beautiful country.” Her remarks have drawn global support, with fans and fellow artists amplifying her call for justice under the hashtag #JusticeForNomcebo.
In an inspiring blend of sporting heritage and intellectual brilliance, John Mensah Jnr., the son of renowned former Black Stars defender John Mensah, has graduated with a Second Class, Upper division in Computer Science from the prestigious University of Texas, USA.
John Mensah Jnr.’s achievement isn’t just another graduation story — it’s a signal that the next generation of the Mensah legacy is set to make waves not on the football pitch, but in the ever-evolving world of technology and innovation.
Known among his peers for his razor-sharp analytical skills, coding prowess, and deep curiosity about artificial intelligence and software engineering, John Mensah Jnr. is already being hailed as a rising star in the tech space.
As a proud mother, Ex-Wife of John Mensah, Henrietta Konama Hayfron in a media interaction expressed how grateful she was to God.
In all tears of joy, this is what the proud mother of John Mensah Jnr., had to say:
“I stand before you today as a proud mother, filled with gratitude, humility, and immense joy.
God has been my steadfast source of strength and provision. Today, as my son marks this significant academic milestone, I extend my sincerest gratitude to God for His unwavering grace, guidance, and providence.
This moment serves not only as a celebration of academic excellence but also as a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and prayer.
To my son, I offer these words of encouragement: You have been a constant source of pride.
May you continue to trust in God and walk in His divine purpose. And to God, I offer this declaration: All glory and honour belong to You.”
While many may have expected him to follow in the athletic footsteps of his father, John Jnr. carved his own path, choosing instead to dominate in classrooms, computer labs, and code repositories.
His journey at the University of Texas was marked by consistent academic excellence, leadership in tech innovation clubs, and an insatiable passion for solving real-world problems through technology.
According to faculty members, John deeply impressed and showcased a level of technical sophistication rarely seen at the undergraduate level.
His dedication, creativity, and leadership have not only earned him academic honors but also the respect and admiration of peers and mentors alike.
Despite his reserved public profile, those who’ve worked closely with John describe him as a “brilliant mind with the potential to transform the future of tech in Africa and beyond.”
With his degree in hand and a fire to innovate, there is no doubt that John Mensah Jnr. is well on his way to becoming a major figure in global technology circles.
The Mensah name has now become synonymous with both physical strength on the football field and intellectual might in the digital world.
Ghana, Africa, and the global tech community should keep a close eye on this young prodigy — the future is bright, and his story is just beginning.
The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) is urging merchants to lower their pricing in reaction to the cedi’s recent appreciation.
GUTA made a strong but succinct call to the trading community to adjust their prices to reflect the currency advances. According to the statement, “we would like to urge the trading community to modify the prices of goods and services.”
GUTA claims that the cedi has gained “significantly” in value relative to major trading currencies. The group claims that this should provide some respite for regular Ghanaians.
Quick action is what the union needs from traders. It thinks the current currency stability should benefit consumers. The organization called for “some relief to the consuming public.”
GUTA says this is not just an economic concern, but a moral one too. It is asking its members to show fairness now that the cedi is doing better.
Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of GUTA, signed off the statement, keeping the message short and direct. But its tone was unmistakable—this is not a suggestion; it is a strong appeal for action.
According to Ghana Web report, Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, is calling for the immediate removal of the Electoral Commission’s top leadership, including Chairperson Jean Mensa. Speaking in a radio interview on Accra-based Radio Gold, Asiedu Nketia declared that cleansing key state institutions is a core part of the NDC’s political renewal strategy.
I started talking about removing top officials at state institutions,” he said in Twi, making clear that the EC leadership, in his view, must be replaced. “Even though the NDC won, the EC Chair, Mrs Jean Mensa, should be removed. So should the entire EC leadership.
The Electoral Commission, currently chaired by Mrs. Jean Mensa, has come under political scrutiny in recent years. Appointed in 2018, Mensa has overseen multiple elections and reforms but has faced criticism from opposition figures, including the NDC, over the handling of electoral processes and perceived partisanship.
Her deputies, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare and Mr. Samuel Tettey, along with commissioners Rev. Akua Ofori-Boateng and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani, have backgrounds ranging from academia and electoral administration to finance and engineering. However, Asiedu Nketia argues that their collective leadership has lost the confidence of the NDC and must be replaced to restore public trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
The call aligns with what Nketia described as a broader NDC “reset agenda” aimed at reforming critical public bodies, including the Auditor General’s office. His statements are likely to stir political debate as Ghana inches closer to the 2024 general elections, where trust in the Electoral Commission will play a crucial role in the election’s credibility.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has commenced the enforcement of its annual one-month ban on drumming and noise-making, beginning today, May 12, and set to end on June 12.
The ban forms a key part of preparations for the Homowo Festival, a revered cultural celebration of the Ga people.
In a statement issued and signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the AMA noted that the ban applies to all residents, communities, and institutions under its jurisdiction.
It is being implemented to maintain peace, harmony, and national security during this period of cultural observance.
Affected areas include the vicinity of the AMA Head Office, Gamashie, Ablekuma West, and parts of Kasoa.
The period is considered sacred by the Ga community, marked by spiritual reflection and solemnity.
“The ban represents a sacred period of solemnity, reflection, and spiritual preparation for the upcoming Homowo Festival,” the statement highlighted.
The directive mandates that churches conduct their services indoors without the use of musical instruments, and loudspeakers are not to be used outside churches, mosques, pubs, or during street evangelism.
The Ga Traditional Council (GTC), backing the directive, has also placed a moratorium on funeral rites and related activities throughout the period.
The AMA has appealed for tolerance and mutual respect among different religious and traditional groups, urging restraint from inflammatory or disrespectful comments.

The General Secretary of the United Front Party (UFP) Listowell Nana Kusi-Poku
has launched a blistering attack on the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Randy Abbey, accusing him of denying him a contract.
According to the outspoken politician, the former Metro TV show host instead chose to award the contract to a known NPP member who, he claims, did nothing to support President John Mahama’s 2024 campaign.
Speaking on Accra FM in an interview shared on social media, Listowell Nana Kusi-Poku, who is also the Executive Director of the Good Governance Advocacy Group, said he considered himself more deserving of the contract, adding that Randy Abbey should have awarded him at least two slots.
“I was competing for the same job with Joe Forson, and you gave it to him — such a questionable decision. You, Randy Abbey, denied me this opportunity. I raised this issue in this studio, it was discussed and resolved. Then, when it was time to appoint grassroots members of the party, you vowed to stop the process. I can go as far as he [Randy Abbey] can go.
“My NDC colleagues and I sought a contract from COCOBOD. After buying the suckers to plant, Randy Abbey denied us the contract and gave it to Joe Forson, a known NPP member. Randy Abbey gave him all nine slots. Don’t I deserve at least two slots? You have given the contract to Joe Forson, but you claim it was one Wahab who gave out the contract. Is Wahab the CEO of COCOBOD? he asked”
Captain Smart Warns Mahama As He Reveals What Burkina Faso Will Do If He Rules Like Akufo-Addo

Captain Smart Warns Mahama: Don’t Follow Akufo-Addo’s Path or Face Rebel Trouble
In a fiery statement on Thursday, popular journalist Captain Smart warned President Mahama of a possible attack from rebels in Burkina Faso if he doesn’t lead Ghana with integrity. According to Smart, if Mahama imitates the governance style of former President Akufo-Addo, the consequences could be severe—even violent.
Smart didn’t hold back. He questioned the strength of Ghana’s military, saying they’re no match for the Burkinabè forces. In his words, one soldier from Burkina Faso could defeat 3,000 Ghanaian soldiers, blaming it on poor training and preparation.
This dramatic warning follows President Ibrahim Traoré’s high-profile appearance at Mahama’s inauguration, where he arrived in full military gear and reportedly stole the spotlight.
With Akufo-Addo’s presidency widely criticized, many Ghanaians breathed a sigh of relief when his term ended. Now, expectations are high for Mahama to set a new tone and fix the damage.
Do you agree with Captain Smart’s take? Let’s hear your views in the comments!
A former presidential staffer, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, says it’s time to stop pretending asset declaration in its current form matters. He believes it is broken, outdated, and needs reform.
“What do we intend to achieve with asset declaration?” the former local government coordinator in Akufo-Addo’s era asked.
“Because as I sit here, I’ve declared my assets twice—and so what? What I put in there, nobody knows.”
Speaking on Newsfile, he didn’t just question the system. He said it’s time to either scrap it or overhaul it completely.
“We should stop wasting our time discussing it and telling people to go and declare it in this current form,” he said.
“It should just be scrapped, or we should rather spend the time advocating for the reform, because it’s a complete waste of time.”
Mr Aboagye, who served as a local government policy lead at the Presidency, says even President Akufo-Addo made asset declaration mandatory. It just wasn’t televised.
“He had the whip, except that maybe he didn’t put cameras on what he was doing,” he explained.
“I recall correctly, I coordinated the receipts for all MMDCEs across the country, and that was the rule.”
According to him, the entire process was structured and enforced. “There were coordinators,” he said.
“Ekow Essuman was the anchor at the presidency, and he made sure that you had to do it. I, for instance, had to engage each of the 261 MMDCEs and not just ask whether they’ve done it, but collect the receipts as proof.”
He said it went all the way to the Cabinet.
“It was a Cabinet decision, which was passed down to all appointees. The former Chief of Staff used to call me to ask me, The other 10 people left, when are they bringing theirs?”
But even then, he said, the entire process was deeply flawed.
“The current form is outmoded, it is of no use and a complete waste of time,” he stressed.
“The first time I picked the form, I kept it on my desk for three weeks, because there are several challenges with it.”
He described the form as clunky and difficult to use. “It’s a big form and you have to fold it like three times before you can open it,” he said.
“The content in there, some of them do not necessarily apply to our context, the kind of information that are being required and all of that. I think it should be simplified.”
But he wasn’t done. He also criticised how the completed forms are treated.
“I don’t know why something that you ask me to do, I do it, I put it in an envelope, I take it to somebody who doesn’t open it, drops it into a never-opened box until some legal matter comes up and you are putting a gun to my head,” he said. “It’s a waste of my time, honestly speaking.”
He said the lack of an update mechanism makes the whole idea pointless.
“If I declare it in January 2025, and I dispose of one of the assets I have declared in September 2025, how do I update it? Who is receiving that update?”
For him, the debate over who has declared what is missing the point.
“What President Mahama has done is nothing new,” he said. “I have declared my assets twice, and in Nana Akufo-Addo’s government, he did whip his appointees too.”
But in the end, Mr Aboagye says Ghanaians should stop acting like this is progress. “Maybe the only difference here is that there are cameras on it,” he said. “And for people seeing that it is being done.”

A Ghanaian mechanic has been celebrated for his courage and swift action after using his car to intercept two Nigerian men who allegedly committed an armed robbery and were fleeing the scene on a motorbike. The incident, which occurred in Accra, has since sparked a mix of praise and caution from the public and police alike.
According to reports, the two suspects had just robbed a store and were attempting to make a quick getaway on a motorcycle, brandishing firearms to intimidate anyone who might interfere. Their escape, however, was thwarted by the observant mechanic, who, upon noticing the unfolding situation, decided to act.
In a daring move, the mechanic drove his car directly into the path of the speeding robbers. The collision caused both suspects to fall from the motorbike, sustaining injuries that prevented further flight. The mechanic’s calculated risk and precise judgment played a crucial role in ending what could have been a longer and potentially more dangerous pursuit.
Eyewitnesses at the scene expressed awe at the mechanic’s bravery. Many gathered to witness the aftermath as the police were called to take control of the situation. The injured suspects were taken to a local hospital under heavy police guard, where they are receiving medical treatment while being detained.
Though many citizens have labeled the mechanic a hero for his role in capturing the suspects, security experts and law enforcement officials have urged the public to refrain from direct confrontation with criminals. The Ghana Police Service released a statement reminding the public that while fighting crime is a collective effort, it must be approached with caution and within legal limits. They advised civilians to report suspicious activity rather than engage physically, to avoid unnecessary injury or escalation.
Nonetheless, the mechanic’s bold actions have reignited conversations around community responsibility, personal courage, and the boundaries between heroism and safety. His actions, though risky, ultimately prevented the robbers from escaping and possibly committing further crimes, making him a figure of public admiration across Accra and beyond.
The 2025 Hajj pilgrimage has begun for Ghanaian Muslims, as the first group of 425 pilgrims from the five northern regions arrived safely in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday.
They were airlifted directly from Tamale’s Yakubu Tali International Airport, with subsequent groups expected to follow in the coming days.
This year, approximately 6,000 pilgrims from Ghana are expected to make the sacred journey—2,000 more than last year’s total from the northern part of the country.
Ahead of their departure, members of the Interim Hajj Taskforce, led by Chairman Collins Dauda, along with government officials including Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, and Northern Regional Minister Adolf Ali John, visited the pilgrims to offer prayers and encouragement.
Alhaji Dauda urged the pilgrims to uphold discipline during their stay in the holy land and assured them of adequate arrangements for their safety, accommodation, and meals throughout their time in Madina and Mecca.
Alhaji Muntaka emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and dignified pilgrimage, calling on the pilgrims to pray for Ghana’s peace and stability. The Northern Regional Minister also offered practical guidance on fulfilling Hajj obligations.
Many of the departing pilgrims expressed satisfaction with the preparations, praising the efforts of both the Hajj Committee and the travel agents.
Former presidential staffer Dennis Miracles Aboagye is unimpressed by what he calls the “fanfare” surrounding President John Mahama’s recent asset declaration.
To him, it’s old news dressed in new clothes.
“What President Mahama has done is nothing new,” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday.
“I have declared my assets twice. Nana Akufo-Addo did it too. The only difference is that maybe he didn’t put cameras on it.”
Mr Aboagye, who coordinated local government and decentralisation under the Akufo-Addo administration, said the fanfare around Mahama’s move was misplaced.
“It was the rule. We declared. I coordinated receipts for all MMDCEs across the country. I had to engage each of the 261 and collect their proof,” he said.
The spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign recalled how strict the process was under Akufo-Addo.
“Ekow Essuman was the anchor at the presidency. He made sure it was done. The former Chief of Staff used to call me to ask: The other 10 left, when are they bringing theirs?”
To him, this isn’t a matter of leadership novelty. “It was a Cabinet decision. We had a whip,” but the appointees just didn’t film themselves walking to drop an envelope.
But beyond the politics, Aboagye questioned the point of the current asset declaration regime.
“My view has always been that we should stop wasting our time discussing it,” he said. “It’s a complete waste of time.”
“Either we reform it or scrap it entirely. Because what is the point? I pick a form. I fold it three times just to open it. I spent three weeks trying to understand it. I fill it, seal it, and give it to someone who never opens it.”
“As I sit here, I’ve declared my assets twice—and so what? What I put in there, nobody knows.”
Miracles Aboagye described the forms as outdated, confusing, and full of irrelevant sections.
“The content does not necessarily apply to our context. The kind of information being required—it’s a chore to quantify assets in Ghana,” he said. “You either underdeclare or overdeclare.”
Even more worrying for him is what happens after the declaration.
“I do it in January. I dispose of one asset in September. How do I update it? Who even receives that update?”
He said the current system has no real checks, no impact, and no transparency.
“Honestly speaking, it’s a waste of my time.”

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has summoned the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, after a viral video emerged showing him handing over an undisclosed sum of money—reportedly in US dollars—to evangelist and former fetish priestess Patricia Oduro Koranteng, widely known as Nana Agradaa.
Sources at the Jubilee House confirmed to Citi News that Sammy Gyamfi has been asked to appear before the Chief of Staff to explain the circumstances surrounding the transaction, which has sparked widespread public criticism and raised concerns over the ethical conduct of public officials.
The footage, which has been widely circulated on social media platforms, captures Gyamfi in what appears to be a personal encounter with Nana Agradaa.
The purpose and nature of the cash handover remain unclear, but the optics of a senior public servant giving money to a controversial religious figure have ignited a firestorm of speculation and public backlash.
Critics have pointed to the video as potentially undermining President John Dramani Mahama’s recently launched Code of Conduct for Public Officials, which emphasizes integrity, accountability, and transparency in public service.
The code was introduced as part of broader efforts to curb corruption and restore public trust in government institutions.
Meanwhile, Sammy Gyamfi on Sunday, May 11, apologised over the incident and explained that it was a private act of kindness which unfortunately found its way into the public space.
However, sources indicate that the Chief of Staff is treating the matter with urgency, given the political sensitivity and reputational risks involved.
Nana Agradaa, now a self-styled evangelist, has long been a polarizing figure in Ghanaian public life. She was previously known for her involvement in traditional spiritual practices before publicly renouncing those ties and establishing a Christian ministry. Her past legal issues and ongoing public controversies continue to attract scrutiny.

Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has expressed disappointment with the approach adopted by some school feeding caterers following the termination of their contracts by the government.
Speaking to Emmanuel Agyabeng on Starr Today, Dr Lartey emphasized the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding, especially given the gender composition of the service.
“The first time I met them over their issue, I told them that because almost all of them in this service are women, if they have challenges and issues, the best approach is for us to jaw-jaw.
Their views and opinions can help shape and reshape the direction of the ministry and the programme so that all of us will have a win-win situation and be happy,” she said.
Her comments come in the wake of rising protests from affected caterers, many of whom have taken to public demonstrations, adorned in red bands, to express their grievances. But the Minister criticized this method, warning that confrontational attitudes do not foster productive engagement.
“After we’ve spoken, all you hear is that their first approach is to go with red bands. It’s their right to express their views, but being unduly antagonistic, I think, is not the best and is not healthy for our engagement,” she added.
While acknowledging their frustration, Dr. Lartey urged the caterers to consider the broader implications of their actions.
“I actually sympathize with the current situation they are going through. It is their right to voice how they feel about the situation. But I equally have a responsibility to ensure that what is done is in the service of the nation and also the children.”
A former presidential staffer and former local government coordinator, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, says the asset declaration rule is a waste of time.
Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews on Saturday, May 10, he called for the law to be either scrapped or reformed entirely.
“My view on asset declaration has always been that we should stop wasting our time discussing it,” the spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign said.
“It should just be scrapped, or we should rather spend the time advocating for the reform, because it’s a complete waste of time.”
Mr Aboagye revealed that he has declared his assets twice. But he said the process is flawed and meaningless.
“Because as I sit here, I’ve declared my assets twice, and so what? What I put in there, nobody knows,” he said. “The real issue is, what do we intend to achieve with asset declaration?”
He challenged those praising President Mahama for publishing his asset declaration.
“What President John Mahama has done is nothing new,” he said.
He insisted that President Akufo-Addo enforced the requirement too, but without fanfare.
“He had the whip except that maybe he didn’t put cameras on what he was doing,” Aboagye added.
He recalled coordinating the asset declarations of all Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) under Akufo-Addo’s first term.
“I, for instance, had to engage each of the 261 MMDCEs,” he said. “Not just ask whether they’ve done it, but collect the receipts as proof.”
According to him, the process was systematic and supervised from the top.
“The Auditor General gives you a scanned copy of the receipt, which I take and forward to Ekow [Essuman],” he explained.
“Nana Akufo-Addo actually insisted on seeing your receipts. It was a Cabinet decision.”
But despite the effort, Aboagye said the current system is broken.
“The current form is outmoded, it is of no use and a complete waste of time,” he stressed. “The first time I picked the form, I kept it on my desk for three weeks.”
He described the form as overly complex. “It’s either you are under-declaring or you are over-declaring,” he said.
“In Ghana, quantifying the asset itself is a chore.” He added that the structure of the form makes it hard to complete. “It’s a big form and you have to fold it like three times before you can open.”
He said the content of the form is often irrelevant. “Some of them do not necessarily apply to our context,” he argued. “I think it should be simplified.”
Mr Aboagye also questioned the secrecy around the process.
“I don’t know why something that you ask me to do, I do it, I put it in an envelope, I take it to somebody who doesn’t open it, drops it into a never-opened box,” he said.
“Until some legal matter comes up and you are putting a gun to my head, it’s a waste of my time, honestly speaking.”
He warned that even if assets are declared, there is no system to track changes.
“If I declare it in January 2025, and I dispose of one of the assets I have declared in September 2025, how do I update it?” he asked. “Who is receiving that update?”

The Executive Director of Transparency International Ghana, Mary Awelana Addah, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take decisive action following public uproar over a controversial cash gift made by Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), to Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
The gift which was reportedly made in dollars was captured in a widely circulated social media video showing Sammy Gyamfi handing over cash to Agradaa during a public interaction.
The gesture has since sparked intense debate among Ghanaians, many of whom have raised ethical questions about its appropriateness, given Agradaa’s controversial past and Gyamfi’s status as a public official.
In response to the backlash, Sammy Gyamfi issued a public apology, describing the gift as a “private act of kindness” that was never intended for public attention.
However, speaking on Channel One TV on Sunday, May 11, Mary Addah emphasized the need for a stronger accountability framework for public officeholders. She urged the President to use the incident as a moment to demonstrate his administration’s commitment to ethical governance.
“I believe that certainly, this is an opportunity for the President to demonstrate above and beyond that he means business by putting in place this Code of Conduct,” she said.
She further advocated for the urgent passage of the Conduct of Public Officers Bill, which she argued would help criminalize unethical behavior and establish stricter standards of conduct for public officials.

“In this instance, if you go to even the Code of Conduct, you do not see a lot of punitive measures that would be in place to support whatever it is that this gentleman has been cited for,” she noted.
Mary Addah also stressed the importance of going beyond symbolism and urged President Mahama to issue stern directives to public servants who are yet to comply with existing laws.
“This is a call on the President to perhaps issue a stern warning to those who have not declared their assets to do so. That, for me, shows commitment, a little not just for the optics,” she added.
Prophet Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom [L] and Sammy Gyamfi
The Founder of the Ebenezer Miracle Worship Centre, Prophet Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom, popularly known as Opambour, has criticised the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, for publicly gifting U.S. dollars to fetish priestess-turned-evangelist, Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
Sammy Gyamfi has made headlines after gifting an undisclosed amount of U.S. dollars to Nana Agradaa.
In a video shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gyamfi is seen standing beside his white Range Rover, taking a photo with Nana Agradaa, who has her arm around him. The two are seen having a brief conversation.
Agradaa is then heard making a comment to Gyamfi, prompting him to open the back door of the vehicle and sit down to count several U.S. dollar notes. As he does so, Agradaa insists that he hand over all the notes instead of selecting a few. She proceeds to grab all the money from his hands and, walking away, flaunts the dollar bills to bystanders, declaring, “I have taken dollars from Sammy Gyamfi.”
Moments later, Gyamfi’s white Range Rover is seen speeding off.
Sammy Gyamfi has come under a barrage of criticism after the video surfaced online, forcing him to issue a public apology.
Commenting on the issue, Prophet One questioned why Sammy Gyamfi could only afford to share U.S. dollars after receiving a government appointment from President Mahama.
“You have never shared dollars—today, where did you get the dollars from? People may think that you have also started embezzling state funds. Meanwhile, it could be a gift from someone. But how many people will know that it is your own money?
“If you are sharing dollars now that you have a government appointment, it will be assumed that you have stolen state funds. Sammy Gyamfi has to be very careful. I am not even worried about the car he drove to the event; I am more concerned about the money. He should not repeat that mistake again. People want to occupy that office, and he should know that he is not the only person who deserves to be there.”

The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) has called on members of the trading community to review and adjust the prices of goods and services in response to the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar and other major trading currencies.
In a statement signed by GUTA President, Dr. Joseph Obeng, the association highlighted the strengthening of the cedi as a timely and welcome development, urging traders to reflect this improvement in the economy through fair and reasonable pricing.
“The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) wishes to appeal to the trading community to adjust prices of goods and services to share the significant gains made by the appreciation of the cedi against the major trading currencies and bring some relief to the consuming public,” the statement read.
Over the past few weeks, the cedi has shown notable resilience, reversing its earlier depreciation trend. The appreciation of the cedi against the US dollar, according to experts, has been buoyed by improved foreign exchange inflows, reduced demand pressures, and enhanced investor confidence driven by recent policy measures and fiscal discipline.
GUTA believes this upward trend presents a valuable opportunity for traders to pass on the benefits to consumers, many of whom continue to struggle with the high cost of living.
In the statement, Dr. Obeng noted that aligning prices with current exchange rate dynamics would not only promote fairness in the marketplace but also foster goodwill and trust between traders and their customers.
GUTA has therefore appealed to all sectors of the trading community to act in good faith by recalibrating their pricing structures, reflecting the more favourable exchange rate environment, and supporting broader national economic recovery efforts.
Act on Sammy Gyamfi’s cash gift to Agradaa – Mary Addah tells Mahama
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has raised concerns about the increasing number of slum settlements in urban areas, warning that these overcrowded and unregulated communities are becoming hotspots for devastating fires.
This follows the Sakumono-Asoprochona Railway enclave fire on May 5, which razed dozens of homes and displaced scores of residents.
Speaking to Citi News on Sunday, May 11, 2025, Divisional Officer Grade 2, Desmond Essoun Ackah, the Head of Public Relations at the Ghana National Fire Service, said such incidents are becoming alarmingly frequent due to negligence, illegal power connections, and the unsafe use of open flames.
He urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to take swift action to address the unchecked growth of slum communities and enforce safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
“Those people are low-income earners, and what we in the service have done over the period is to visit them, engage them, and let them know their responsibility, especially, when it comes to fire prevention.
“But as human as they are sometimes, they may be negligent, and for such places, illegal wiring is also rife. People use naked wires anyhow. Therefore these could be the causes of fires in those areas.
But if the assemblies are able to take this up to ensure that these slums do not erupt in the first place or better still, find a decent accommodation for these dwellers, it will go a long way to prevent some of these fires,” he stated.

The first batch of 425 prospective Ghanaian Muslim pilgrims from the five regions of the north arrived safely in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to perform the 2025 Hajj.
The pilgrims were airlifted directly from the Yakubu Tali International Airport (TIA) in Tamale to Jeddah on Saturday, May 10. The rest of the pilgrims are expected to depart in batches in the coming days.
A total of about 6000 pilgrims are expected to travel from Ghana to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage.
This marks an increase of 2,000 compared to 4000 pilgrims who participated last year from northern Ghana.
The Chairman of the Interim Hajj Taskforce, Collins Dauda, accompanied by the Northern Regional Minister, Adolf Ali John, the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, and other government officials, paid a visit to the prospective pilgrims at the airport to bid them farewell.
Adequate arrangement
Alhaji Dauda admonished the would-be pilgrims to be disciplined and law-abiding during their stay in Saudi Arabia to enable them to undertake their spiritual duties successfully.
He assured the pilgrims that adequate measures had been instituted to ensure their safety and security in the holy land.
He added that arrangements had also been made for the pilgrims to be served meals daily for all the days that they would stay in Medina, adding that standard hotels had also been secured for them in Mecca.
Wishes/advice
For his part, Alhaji Muntaka wished them a safe and peaceful journey and assured them of the highest quality of service, as the interim Hajj taskforce had made all the necessary and befitting arrangements to ensure their comfort and well-being.
He implored them to use the opportunity to pray for peace and stability in the country to promote development.
The Northern Regional Minister also advised the would-be pilgrims on what they were required to do to perfect their Hajj.
Some of the prospective pilgrims who spoke with Graphic Online expressed their satisfaction with the arrangements made by both the Hajj agents and the Hajj committee to ensure a successful pilgrimage.

The CEO of the French Development Agency (AFD), Rémy Rioux, who is currently on a working visit to Morocco, has announced plans to carry out a field mission in the Kingdom’s Southern Provinces.
The announcement came during a press briefing on Friday in Rabat, following Rioux’s meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
Rioux explained that his visit is part of the implementation of the Joint Declaration signed in October 2024 between King Mohammed VI and French President Emmanuel Macron during the latter’s state visit to Morocco.
“You might recall that on that occasion, President Emmanuel Macron expressed France’s new position on the Southern Provinces,” he noted, adding that his current visit is part of the “rapid operationalisation” of that strategic commitment.
Rioux confirmed that AFD’s mandate has now been extended to Morocco’s Southern Provinces and that he will be visiting Laayoune on Saturday, and Dakhla on Sunday and Monday.
He described the trip as an important step in delivering on the commitments made in the bilateral agreement.
He highlighted the strategic significance of the region, saying, “The Southern Provinces represent a strategic link with Sub-Saharan Africa on the Atlantic coast,” and described it as “a very important action framework” for the AFD Group.
Rioux emphasised the strength and depth of the Morocco-France partnership, noting that Morocco remains AFD’s leading partner worldwide.
“Morocco accounts for over €3 billion in ongoing projects—more than 30 billion dirhams across 70 active projects,” he said.
He also pointed out that 80 AFD Group employees are currently working on the ground in Morocco, underscoring the importance of the agency’s presence in the country.
This visit by the AFD chief is part of the “Reinforced Exceptional Partnership” signed by King Mohammed VI and President Macron. It reflects the shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation and supporting inclusive, sustainable development across all regions of Morocco.

Jannik Sinner said it was an “amazing feeling” to be back on court after beating Argentina’s Mariano Navone at the Italian Open in the first match since his doping ban.
The 6-3 6-4 victory was the world number one’s 22nd in a row – a streak interrupted by the three-month suspension he agreed to with the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).
Sinner wrote ‘Che bello’ (How beautiful) on the camera lens at the end of the match, as chants of ‘Ole’ rang around the stadium.
The Italian said the reaction from the home crowd was the best he had ever experienced.
“It has been amazing to go again on court after such a long time, having great support also in the last days,” Sinner said.
His parents were among 10,500 people who offered him a full-throated welcome onto the Campo Centrale, but Sinner showed little emotion as he walked on hand in hand with a child mascot.
“From the first day I came here, it has been amazing. I was waiting for this moment for quite a long time,” he added.
“The whole match, even when it seems quite comfortable, it’s a rollercoaster, no?
“Inside we feel that, especially the beginning of the match, having, again, the nerves of serving for the first time, trying to move in the best possible way you can.”
Image caption,Fans held up a sign saying ‘Welcome back Jannik’ during the Italian’s victory
Huge crowds tried to catch a glimpse of Sinner when he practised on Court Five earlier in the day. A TV camera was rolling throughout, while children balanced on parents’ shoulders and others mounted a fire hydrant and a potted plant to get the best possible view.
“Jannik’s day” was the headline on Saturday’s edition of Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport. “The wait is over. From 7pm Rome will embrace … the strongest Italian tennis player of all time,” the paper continued.
Sinner signed a lot of autographs this week as he practised with top-10 players like Taylor Fritz and Casper Ruud.
He has been greeted with great warmth and excitement – as the overwhelming majority of Italian tennis fans seem to feel a three-month suspension was harsh and are treating his return as a celebration.
There was even a short burst of applause from members of the Italian media when Sinner took his seat in the interview room on Monday afternoon.
The match was Sinner’s first since he successfully defended his Australian Open title in Melbourne in January.
Three weeks later, he accepted Wada‘s offer of a three-month ban for two doping violations last year.
Sinner tested positive for clostebol and was originally cleared of any fault by an independent tribunal.
Even though Wada did not dispute that the steroid had entered his system because his physio had been using a spray containing clostebol to treat a cut on his own finger, it initially felt a ban of between one and two years would be appropriate.
Wada later came to the conclusion a suspension of that length would be “unduly harsh” and so entered into negotiations with Sinner’s legal team.
Rome reserved its best weather of the week for the 23-year-old’s return.
As Lazio played Juventus in the Olympic Stadium just a few hundred metres away, Sinner missed his very first serve, but quickly found his stride. He won the first set with a single break of serve and some clean, powerful ball striking.
But the second set was less straightforward as Sinner’s forehand proved increasingly unreliable. He recorded 16 unforced errors off that wing in the match, but by two breaks of serve to one, was still able to complete a straight-set win in one hour and 38 minutes.
His decision making was not as sharp as usual but Sinner had every reason to be delighted with his return.
“I was missing the feedback of official matches, which are the best feedbacks we players can get,” Sinner said.
“At least now I have a bigger picture of what I’m doing well and what I have to improve.
“The nerves and everything, it has to go again into my body. It was a great start from my point of view of this tournament and of the comeback.”
Sinner’s third-round match on Monday will be against the world number 93, Jesper de Jong – a lucky loser from qualifying.
The Italian Open is the last Masters 1000 event before the French Open, but Sinner has also entered the Hamburg Open in the week before Roland Garros in case he feels he needs more practice on the clay.

In a developing land dispute, prominent businessman McDan is facing what his supporters describe as unfair treatment from the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) over land he has protected for nearly two decades.
McDan, who has been on the airport land for 18 years, initially chose not to attorn tenancy to any party except GACL, refusing to seek title from the Lands Commission as other tenants, like Action Church, reportedly did.
According to sources close to the situation, McDan paid for security to protect the land for over 12 years, during which GACL reportedly struggled to access their own property.
On two occasions, GACL representatives allegedly abandoned their vehicles on the land after being confronted.
Despite these challenges, McDan continued to invest in the area, constructing warehouses to deter intruders and negotiating with the traditional allodial owners from La, Teshie, and Nungua, who permitted him to develop the land after he compensated them.
However, recent moves by GACL to impose significant charges on McDan’s holdings have sparked accusations of unfair treatment, with some suggesting that a high-ranking political figure’s interest in the land is influencing the dispute.
The third edition of the Made in Ghana Business Summit is set to host over 300 influential figures from both the public and private sectors.
The summit slated for Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre is themed “Promoting Regional Industrialization and Business Integration in Ghana.”
It aims to foster the consumption of locally made goods and services to drive national economic growth.
Organized by the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Ghana, the event will bring together Chief Executives, captains of industries, business leaders, development partners, members of the diplomatic corps, policymakers, and entrepreneurs from across the country.
The focus will be on deepening discussions around the importance of supporting Ghanaian products and services to cultivate competitive homegrown brands capable of propelling the nation’s progress.
The summit will feature prominent guest speakers from various sectors and will also unveil leading Ghanaian brands in manufacturing and services that have demonstrated a strong commitment to the Made-in-Ghana agenda.
Reputable businesses spanning key industries such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, maritime logistics, automobiles, and aviation will be highlighted.
Key objectives of the summit include promoting and showcasing Ghanaian-made products to boost awareness and demand, providing a networking platform for potential local and international partnerships.
It would also feature expert discussions on crucial topics like regional industrialization, agribusiness, export and trade, local manufacturing, and overall economic growth.
An exhibition will also allow businesses to present their offerings to a broader audience. Furthermore, the summit intends to facilitate connections that will enable Ghanaian businesses to expand their reach into international markets.
GH Dolphins cemented their status as Ghana’s premier swimming club with a dominant display at the 2025 Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) President’s Cup, held at Borteyman Aquatic Centre in Accra.
Led by national swimming sensation Abeku Jackson, Dolphins delivered a stunning performance, bagging a whopping 62 medals — including 37 gold, 14 silver, and 11 bronze — to top the medals table at the one-day competition.
Their closest rivals, Marlins, settled for second place with a total of 32 medals, while GH Aquatic Masters took third with 24 medals.
There were individual honours too for the Dolphins, as Boris Ushinskii and 13-year-old Mercedes Abdallah were crowned Best Male and Best Female Swimmers of the competition, respectively.
The annual event was hosted under the auspices of GSA President, Delphina Quaye, attracting 181 swimmers from 11 clubs nationwide, all competing fiercely across 59 events.
Joining the fray were teams from Blue Fins, Blue Whales, African Sharks, Dolphins Swim Club Kumasi, Torpedo, Tema Seals, Jay Swim & Fitness Centre, and Felams Swim Club.
Mrs Quaye lauded the competition’s growing popularity, describing the turnout and standard of competition as a “massive source of pride” for the GSA.
“We are thrilled with the increasing numbers. The level of competition was impressive, and it shows that swimming in Ghana is on a positive trajectory,” she told journalists after the event.
She also expressed confidence in the future of Ghanaian swimming, highlighting upcoming events on the 2025 calendar — including the Ghana Swim League, the Channel 1 Swimming Tournament, and international fixtures such as the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore this July.
“I want to thank the swimmers, clubs, and especially the parents for embracing the sport. The progress is incredible. Just look at the under-10s — they’re swimming so well, and that gives us so much hope. When children start this young, the long-term impact on medal prospects is huge,” she added.
When former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia launched Ghana’s innovative instant payment system—mobile money interoperability, it marked a groundbreaking moment on the African continent and one of the first of its kind in the world.
Seven years on, Ghana’s landmark interoperable payment system, which enables seamless transactions between all mobile money wallets and all banks, remains the only one of its kind in Africa. It continues to serve as an enviable reference point in global rankings, ahead of many developed nations.
Just a few days ago, multiple reports from Canada announced that the country is finally set to roll out its much-anticipated instant payment system.
For years, Canadian fintechs have urged Payments Canada to accelerate the long-delayed Real-Time Rail (RTR) instant payment system. This system will deliver the kind of instant and seamless payments that Ghanaians have enjoyed for the past seven years.
While Ghana’s instant interoperable payment system was realized through collaboration between GhIPSS, telecom companies, and banks, Canada’s version is being developed through a partnership between Canadian fintech company Nuvei and Mastercard.
Expectations are already high in Canada, and the collaboration is expected to enable near-instantaneous payout capabilities for both businesses and individuals.
“Today’s businesses operate in a competitive and fast-paced environment, always fighting to attract and retain customers. Across multiple sectors, we know customers want fast and easy reconciliation of payments,” Darrell MacMullin, Senior Vice President, Commercial and New Payment Flows, Mastercard Canada, said.
Ghana continues to receive international recognition for its early leadership in implementing an instant, interoperable payment system.
Numerous fintech institutions have acknowledged Ghana’s pioneering role in the sector, consistently ranking it number one in Africa and among the best globally for its effective interoperable payment infrastructure.
This development has also earned former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia widespread commendation for championing a transformative digital payment system during his tenure.
