Accra, April 6, GNA –  The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Tong Defa, has lauded the establishment of the Association of China (Ghana) Mining LBG (ACGM) as a key step towards deepening sustainable and inclusive development in Ghana’s mining sector.

Describing the Association as a “bridge for a win-win cooperation,” Mr Tong said the initiative aligned with Ghana’s ambition to modernise its mining industry, while protecting its rich natural heritage.

Ambassador Tong stated: “Ghana’s lush forests and clear waters are as valuable as gold and silver,” urging members of the Association to prioritise ecological preservation alongside economic development.

He was speaking at a colourful ceremony, in Accra,  at which the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, inaugurated the ACGM under the theme: “Responsibility, Sustainability, Excellence, and Growth.”

It comprises major Chinese mining firms and mining sector services companies.

The event also marked the announcement of the China-Ghana Mining Community Development Foundation, aimed at mobilising dedicated funds to support sustainability and community empowerment and development initiatives.

Mr Tang ZhenJiang serves as Chairman, with Mr Kevin Chen, Secretary General (Golden Star Wassa, subsidiary of Chifeng Gold); and three Deputy Chairmen: Mr Kevin Wu of JH Resources Exploration Limited, Mr Libin Xu of Ghana Manganese Company Limited, and Mr Qingming Tang of Earl International Mining Ltd.

Ambassador Tong identified five key focus areas for the ACGM as promoting standardised development, information sharing, technical cooperation, community development, and environmental protection. Ambassador Tong pledged the continued support of the Chinese Embassy, expressing optimism that the Association would “inject new momentum into Ghana’s economic growth and the high-quality development of Chinese enterprises.”

Mr Buah, who spoke on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, described the inauguration as “a significant milestone that ushers in a new chapter in Ghana-China collaboration in the mining sector.

“One that promises mutual growth, technological advancement, and sustainable development,” he explained.

He underlined the Government’s zero tolerance for illegal mining drive, describing  Galamsey as “an act of environmental terrorism and economic sabotage”.

Mr Buah tasked the ACGM to serve as “a beacon of integrity,” upholding Ghanaian mining laws, while supporting community upliftment.

“China has long been a partner in Ghana’s mining sector. The establishment of the ACGM reflects the commitment of Chinese investors to responsible and long-term engagement in this very critical industry,” he said.

The Minister highlighted the potential of Chinese technical expertise in areas such as underground mining, low-grade ore development, and mining-related nuclear training, to improve efficiency and global competitiveness in Ghana’s mining industry.

Mr Tang, for his part, reaffirmed the Association’s core mission to promote responsible mining, technological innovation, and community-driven development.

He expressed readiness to work closely with Ghana’s Ministries of Lands and Natural Resources and Youth Development to empower young people through a cooperative system.

“Through this Association, we will unify industry consensus, fulfil social responsibilities, and empower communities,” Mr Tang said.

“Together, we will write a remarkable new chapter in China-Ghana collaboration.”

The event, rich in cultural display, featured traditional performances by the Atitirew Cultural Troupe and brought together dignitaries and key players in Ghana’s mining sector.

They included Ministers of State, Parliamentarians, and renowned entrepreneur Mr Ibrahim Mahama, founder of Engineers and Planners, a mining service provider.

Government to publish list of locally-made items for mandatory procurement by state agencies

0

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance

The Government of Ghana is set to introduce a policy requiring all state agencies to procure certain essential goods exclusively from local producers.

This initiative, announced by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during a meeting with the leadership of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), aims to strengthen Ghana’s industrial sector, create jobs, and reduce dependency on imports.

Dr. Forson emphasised that no country can develop without a strong industrial base, and while trade is important, Ghana must adopt deliberate policies to promote local production.

He questioned why the country continues to import basic commodities such as sugar and rice, despite having the capacity to produce them locally.

“To support our local industries, the government will soon publish a list of items that all public sector agencies must procure locally. This will ensure that government procurement serves as a tool to develop our industries,” he stated.

“Going forward, any government procurement from outside Ghana will require special approval from the Office of the President.”

The finance minister also highlighted the urgent need to curb the smuggling of goods, which he said is crippling local businesses.

He revealed that the government has identified key smuggling routes and will soon announce strict measures to stop the influx of smuggled goods that unfairly compete with locally manufactured products.

As part of the broader industrial strategy, Dr. Forson called for a working session with industry leaders to explore how local businesses can actively participate in the government’s 24-hour economy programme to drive production and economic expansion.

AGI President, Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, welcomed the government’s commitment to supporting local industries.

He praised the minister’s budget policies and expressed optimism that continued engagement between government and industry would lead to tangible improvements in Ghana’s industrial sector.

The upcoming mandatory local procurement policy is expected to provide a significant boost to Ghanaian manufacturers, ensuring that government spending contributes directly to the growth of local businesses and the expansion of the national economy.

In a remarkable blend of grit, purpose, and patriotism, Ghanaian-born Emmanuel Adjei is gearing up for a journey that promises to be both physically demanding and deeply symbolic.

Under the banner of his charity project Bike2MyRoots, Emmanuel will cycle solo from Munich, Germany to Accra, Ghana — a near 10,000-kilometre odyssey through 15 countries and a vivid testament to personal resolve in pursuit of a greater cause.

“Bike2MyRoots is a bold initiative that combines the spirit of adventure with a deep commitment to social change,” organisers say. The ride, slated to begin in May 2025, will unfold over 150 days and test the limits of endurance as Emmanuel navigates rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and countless border crossings — all in the name of education and empowerment for deprived Ghanaian communities.

The journey is more than just a test of stamina. It’s a fundraiser for EduSport, a local NGO working to create access to quality education in underserved areas. The organisation builds libraries and educational infrastructure, helping to bridge the gap for children who often find themselves forgotten by the mainstream education system.

The cause is personal for Emmanuel, who sees his journey not only as a return to his roots but a call to action for others. “The ride also carries symbolic weight, a Ghanaian returning home on two wheels, fueled by the dream of empowering others,” he notes, urging the Ghanaian diaspora and well-wishers around the world to contribute to the mission.

According to Emmanuel, his goal is to stir minds as much as wheels. “With every kilometer pedaled, Emmanuel hopes to inspire others to take action and invest in the next generation of thinkers, leaders, and change-makers.”

In an era where many stories are dominated by despair, Bike2MyRoots offers something refreshingly different: a tale of hope, driven by the dream of a better Ghana — one pedal stroke at a time.

Prophet Kofi Oduro wades into missing ECG containers saga

0

Head Pastor and founder of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro Head Pastor and founder of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro

Head Pastor and founder of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the alleged disappearance of thousands of containers filled with cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at the port.

Speaking to his congregation on April 6, 2025, the pastor stated that the circumstances surrounding the missing cables reflect the state of the nation.

He further claimed that God is using what he described as “foolish countries” to punish Ghana due to the country’s prevailing issues.

“God is using foolish countries to punish us. China, India, Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon are all part of these countries. That is why we see revenue from our GDP flowing into other nations,” he said.

He expressed disbelief that one individual, in collaboration with others, could allegedly orchestrate the disappearance of 1,300 containers.

“Only in a foolish country with no foresight can this happen. People are languishing in poverty, dying daily from terminal diseases, and yet the government refuses to provide free treatment. Such wickedness!”

Rev. Oduro also questioned why no official at the port where the containers were released had been arrested, noting instead that only some foreign nationals had been detained.

“A container arrives at the port and sits there for five years. Which irresponsible officials allowed the containers to be taken out? You go and arrest some Chinese nationals, is Ghana that daft? Why haven’t you arrested those who opened the port gates and authorized the release?,” he questioned.

He concluded by reiterating that God is allowing what he termed “stupid countries” to discipline Ghana for its failures.

“You are blind… and so God is using stupid countries to punish you,” he added.

About the ECG cables:

A recent investigative report on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has revealed that over 1,300 containers intended for clearance at the Tema Port remain unaccounted for.

According to Prof Innocent Senyo Acquah, chairman of the investigative committee, ECG initially reported having 2,491 uncleared containers filled with cables and other essential equipment.

However, an independent audit at the port identified only 1,134 containers, leaving 1,347 unaccounted for.

Kamaldeen Sulemana’s Southampton relegated from English Premier League

The Ghana international played the entire duration of their 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur which sealed their fate.

The Saints have struggled all season and have been rooted to the bottom of the league table since early November, having won just one of their 20 fixtures.

Sulemana has been one of the impressive players for Southampton this term with one goal in 19 league appearances.

The former Right to Dream Academy player moved to St Mary’s Stadium in January 2023 from French side Rennes, where he made 34 league appearances, scored five goals and provided two assists.

Greenpeace backs green methanol for shipping ahead of IMO meeting

0

“Green methanol can point the way for shipping to a climate-friendly future,” Greenpeace spokeswoman Clara Thompson told dpa ahead of a meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London on Monday.

The IMO, a UN agency made up of 176 countries, aims to discuss measures for implementing its greenhouse gas strategy with a view to making shipping carbon-neutral by 2050.

The study by the DLR’s maritime energy unit found methanol easily manageable, by contrast with hydrogen or ammonia, and technically ready for use. It can be produced using renewable forms of energy, and marine engines can easily be converted to burning it.

Shipping is thought to generate around 3% of all greenhouse gases, as well as large amounts of the oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. These pollutants would be almost entirely absent with the use of methanol.

The study notes however that producing methanol is still expensive “in particular the operation and acquisition of electrolysers.” The fuel also needs tanks that are twice as large as current fossil fuel tanks.

Little green methanol is currently available on the market. For comparison, German shipping would need up to 5.73 million metric tons per year, against 2.94 million tons of diesel.

Thompson said the IMO needed to implement binding targets to speed up conversion to alternative fuels. Greenpeace backed a CO2 price that reflected the benefits for the climate of methanol over fossil fuels, she said.

GPL 2024/25: Samartex sink Accra Lions into relegation zone

0

Defending champions, Samartex inflicted a painful 2-1 defeat on Accra Lions at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena on Sunday, April 6, 2025, deepening their survival woes.

Emmanuel Mamah opened the scoring for the home side just one minute into the game, capitalizing on a lapse in concentration from the visitors.

The hosts dominated proceedings, especially in the first half, creating several shooting and goal-scoring opportunities.

Accra Lions’ Yao Sokpoli attempted to level the score in the 19th minute with a daring strike from outside the box, following a layoff by left-back Ibrahim Issa, but his effort missed the target.
Despite continued pressure from the Lions, Samartex stood firm in defense.

The Lions’ entire backline was caught ball-watching in the 38th minute, allowing Akwesi Sarpong to rifle a shot into the roof of the net to double Samartex’s lead before halftime.

After the break, Accra Lions introduced fresh legs off the bench, but the changes had little impact.

Although the visitors eventually pulled one back, it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.

Samartex held on to secure all three points, moving up to 9th on the league table with 35 points.

Meanwhile, Accra Lions have dropped into the relegation zone with 23 points. They face Basake Holy Stars in their next fixture, while Samartex will take on Legon Cities.

Article: Corporate restructuring and the role of the board in Ghana

0

As established in the Ghanaian landmark case Salomon v. Salomon , when a company is incorporated, it becomes a separate legal entity with perpetual succession.

This means the company continues to exist even if its members or officers leave, due to death or other reasons.

However, companies can face challenges and may need assistance to recover and grow, which is where corporate restructuring comes in.

This article will discuss corporate restructuring in Ghana, some different methods of corporate restructuring under Ghanaian law, and the role played by the Board of Directors in the process.

1. What is corporate restructuring

Corporate Restructuring is making major adjustments to a company’s financial and operational structure, often in response to financial difficulties.

This may include making positive adjustments to the company’s debt, operations, or organizational setup, aimed at minimizing financial risk and improving business performance .

When a company encounters financial troubles or becomes insolvent, it may look to restructure as a way to recover, regain solvency, and prevent liquidation.

The main objectives are to lower debt, boost cash flow, and ensure the company can continue functioning in a financially stable manner. Below are some of the ways a company can restructure in order to be solvent.

2. Restructuring Methods

Administration:

A restructuring officer or a licensed insolvency practitioner is appointed as an administrator to operate under an approved restructuring agreement to take over the business and assets of a company that is insolvent or has a negative net worth, to manage and restructure the business for the company to become solvent and have a positive net worth.

The Corporate Insolvency and Restructuring Act, 2020 (Act 1015), (“CIRA”), is a crucial law in Ghana that addresses insolvency and restructuring. It provides distressed companies with the option to rescue their businesses instead of resorting to liquidation or receivership.

Under CIRA, companies can remain operational as a going concern while undergoing restructuring, with oversight from a designated administrator or restructuring officer.

This approach temporarily halts creditors’ actions, allowing for the development of a restructuring plan that may offer better outcomes for all parties compared to immediate liquidation.

It is important to point out that this rescue provision does not apply to banks, insurance companies, or any other business with special legislation.

The process of administration commences when a licensed Insolvency Practitioner is appointed . The administrator’s duty is to take control of the company’s business, assets, and affairs, investigate its operations, and seek ways to rescue the business in the best interests of creditors, employees, and shareholders.

The administrator is responsible for managing the business, and preserving its value, and may choose to sell or terminate parts of the business and dispose of company property.

The administrator also has the authority to exercise any powers or perform any duties that the company or its officers could perform if it were not in administration.

Mergers:

A merger occurs when one company is absorbed by another company or when two or more companies join to form a new company.

In this process, all assets, liabilities, and operations of the merging companies are transferred to the receiving company or the newly formed entity.

In return, shareholders of the merging companies typically receive shares in the receiving company, sometimes along with additional cash payments.

In Ghana, specific steps must be followed for a merger to take effect:

● Board Approval: The directors of the merging companies must confirm that the merger serves the company’s best interest and that the transferee company will remain solvent after the merger. They must sign a certificate to this effect.

● Merger Proposal: A detailed merger proposal, along with relevant documents, must be shared with shareholders and creditors at least 28 days before the merger takes effect.

The proposal must be approved by at least 75% of each group (members, creditors, and other relevant stakeholders).

● Registration: The approved merger proposal and supporting documents must be submitted to the Registrar at the Office of the Registrar of Companies for official registration.

The essence of a merger is to create a stronger, more competitive business entity by combining resources and expertise, allowing companies to overcome limitations and achieve long-term success.

Arrangements:

An Arrangement is the reorganizing of a company’s structure or shares, such as consolidating or dividing shares  by an appointed restructuring officer (in this case, an insolvency practitioner) such as an Administrator or a Liquidator (in the case of a company being wound up) to improve its financial position. It is usually done when a company faces financial difficulties, such as needing to restructure.

The purpose of an arrangement is to find a solution that benefits both the company and its creditors or members, helping the company avoid insolvency or liquidation and continue its operations.

The company first proposes an arrangement to its creditors or members. The company or other interested parties then apply to the Court which may order a meeting of the relevant groups of members and creditors to be held in the manner the Court directs.

For the arrangement to proceed, at least 75% of creditors or members must approve it. If approved, the Registrar may appoint an insolvency practitioner to assess its fairness.

After the investigation, the Court reviews the arrangement and the report before confirming it, making the arrangement legally binding on all parties.

Once confirmed, the company must implement the changes, and if the arrangement involves asset transfers, the Court may give its approval. If the company fails to follow the required steps, it will face penalties.

3. The role of the board in corporate restructuring

The Board of Directors plays a crucial role in corporate restructuring and below are their roles and responsibilities in the various corporate restructuring techniques:

In an Administration proceeding, Directors hold the following roles and responsibilities:

● They appoint an administrator if they believe the company is insolvent or likely to become insolvent. This decision is made by passing a board resolution, which must contain the grounds for insolvency or the likelihood of insolvency.

● They are required to assist the administrator, provide necessary information, and comply with their decision to help salvage the business for the benefit of creditors, employees, and shareholders.

● While they remain in office during administration, their powers to manage the affairs of the company are limited and they can only act with the administrator’s approval.

During a merger transaction, directors and required to do the following:

● They must ensure that the merger is in the best interest of the company and that the new company will be solvent post-merger, and they are required to provide a certificate to this effect.

● They are also responsible for sending merger proposals and relevant documents to members and creditors before the merger takes effect.

● They must ensure that all legal requirements have been complied with, including submitting necessary documents to the Registrar of Companies for approval and registration of the merger.

When a company undertakes an Arrangement, the Directors are responsible for the following:

● Applying to the Court for an order for a meeting between the shareholders and creditors to discuss and approve the proposed arrangement. The Court however provides the rules to be followed by all parties for this meeting..

● They must ensure the company follows the Court’s orders, such as providing required information by all parties and executing the necessary actions to implement the arrangement. Should they fail to do this, they will be required to pay a penalty, along with all officers of the company

4. Conclusion:

In conclusion, corporate restructuring is more than just a lifeline for companies in financial distress; it is a powerful opportunity to reinvent and stabilize a business.

Whether through administration, mergers, or arrangements, restructuring offers a path to reduce debt, revamp operations, and return to profitability.

The Board of Directors plays a pivotal role in this transformative process, making key decisions, ensuring legal compliance, and collaborating with administrators to steer the company toward recovery.

With strategic leadership and careful planning, restructuring can not only save a company but also position it for future growth and success in an ever-evolving business landscape.

#FixTheCountry plans May 1 protest over galamsey concerns – Barker-Vormawor

0

Private legal practitioner, Oliver Barker-Vormawor Private legal practitioner, Oliver Barker-Vormawor

Private legal practitioner and social activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has announced that the #FixTheCountry movement will stage a protest against the government’s poor handling of illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, in the country.

He stated that the demonstration, scheduled for May 1, 2025, will see concerned Ghanaians taking to the streets to express their displeasure with how the government is addressing the galamsey issue.

According to the activist, since President John Dramani Mahama assumed office, he has not presented a clear roadmap to combat the menace, unlike the detailed plans laid out for other sectors during the 2024 election campaign.

“It’s been four months. The level of seriousness the government has shown in other areas makes us believe that a clear strategy to tackle galamsey should have already been unveiled.

“For us, the reason we’re mobilising back to the streets is to remind the government that this is a serious and urgent issue,” he told Joy FM on April 6, 2025.

Barker-Vormawor called on Ghanaians to turn out in large numbers to make their grievances known regarding illegal mining.

“This goes beyond our daily bread or the comfort of fraternising with ministers we admire. Let’s show up and hold the government accountable for addressing the problems we face,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr Murtala Mohammed, has stated that the government is in the process of amending the Minerals and Mining Act of 2003 to ban illegal mining in forest areas.

Hearts of Oak will host Medeama in a highly anticipated Matchday 26 fixture of the Ghana Premier League at the Accra Sports Stadium.

This will be the Phobians’ first time returning to the Accra Sports Stadium this season after receiving late approval.

Hearts of Oak will hope their return to the venue will inspire them to end their poor run of form, having failed to win any of their last four games, losing three and drawing one.

They will face a Medeama side that enters the fixture on the back of two consecutive wins and will be eager to extend their streak.

The Tarkwa-based side, who are the favourites, will be seeking revenge after losing the reverse fixture 2-0.

While a win for Hearts of Oak would propel them back into the top four and revive their title challenge, a victory for Medeama could see them climb into third place.

30-minute rainstorm renders many homeless at Garkuon

0

A brief but intense rainstorm lasting just 30 minutes has left many residents of Garkuon, a farming community in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region, homeless.

The storm, which struck around 10pm on Saturday, ripped off roofs and caused widespread destruction to properties.

According to residents, several structures were destroyed, including homes belonging to vulnerable individuals such as widows.

A resident, Lewaah Dari, who recounted the incident, said they were asleep when the storm began. She narrated how the screams of a neighbour calling for help led them to the collapsed room of an elderly woman. Fortunately, the woman was rescued in time.

“On our way back, we saw roofing sheets being carried away by the wind,” she added, appealing to government and NGOs to come to their aid, especially as more than 10 widows have been left without shelter.

Meanwhile, a Roman Catholic catechist, Samuel Diporo, who had visited the community for worship, expressed shock at the level of destruction. He noted that when he arrived, only furniture remained in place, with church members absent due to the havoc.

He was seen consoling victims and helping them move their belongings to safer places.

Residents are urging for immediate relief support to rebuild their lives.

Health Ministry, FDA Destroy Seized Opioid

0

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), has safely disposed of a significant consignment of opioids that was seized at the Tema Port at the Vigour DW, Ashaiman.

The operation, directed by a court order, was carried out with the joint efforts of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Customs Commission.

The seized shipment includes: – 26 cartons of RaholTapentadol 250 mg – 160 cartons of Tafradol Tapentadol 120 mg – 40 cartons of Taking Tapentadol 120 mg – 190 cartons of Loperamide 2 mg – 320 cartons of Chlorpheniramine Maleate.

Addressing the press, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said on March 14, 2025, customs officials intercepted a suspicious consignment of opioids purportedly in transit from Ghana to Niger.

“We swiftly sought a court order to destroy the opioid shipment, which was duly granted. The court’s order specified the venue and witnesses required for the destruction process. I’m pleased to report that we’ve complied with these requirements, with representatives from the HighCourt, Food, and Drugs Authority, Network people, and the Ministry of Science and Environment in attendance” he said.

Mr. Akandoh emphasized that the investigation has revealed that the importer is not a Ghanaian, and the goods were destined for Niger, saying, “We’re working closely with the Niger government to determine whether they authorized the consignment. Let me emphasize that our airports and harbors will never be used as conduits for illicit activities.”

He further stated that the government has declared war on the influx of opioids and will continue to monitor our ports and harbours to prevent such incidents, adding, “Our primary concern is the safe disposal of these harmful substances to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.

We’re committed to protecting our youth and citizens from the dangers of opioid abuse. We’ll be outlining our next line of action soon, and we’re committed to working with the Attorney General’s department to ensure that those responsible for this illicit activity are brought to justice.”

Dr. Mrs. Delese Darko, the Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, also addressed the health implications of consuming opioids, stressing the serious risks they pose to public health.

“The disposal of these illicit drugs serves as a clear message that the authorities remain committed to safeguarding the health and safety of the public by targeting the illegal drug trade. The operation forms part of the FDA’s broader strategy to address the concerns of illicit drug trafficking in the country and ensure that such substances do not reach the market,” she said.

‘An NDC parliamentary candidate owns part of it’ – Ntim Fordjour alleges

The intercepted cocaine (L) and Rev. John Ntim Fordjour The intercepted cocaine (L) and Rev. John Ntim Fordjour

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has made another allegation of cocaine smuggling against the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking in an interview on ChannelOne TV on April 5, 2025, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) legislator claimed that a Parliamentary Candidate from the ruling NDC owns a portion of the recently intercepted cocaine shipment, estimated to be worth over $350 million.

Although he did not provide any evidence to back his claims, the NPP MP said the portion allegedly owned by the NDC Parliamentary Candidate is valued at $150 million.

He further alleged that the NDC, within its short time in office, has turned Ghana into a hub for illicit drug trafficking.

“When the NDC has been exposed for making Ghana a haven for drug trafficking… a high-profile cocaine bust, the President himself alluded to it. A $350 million bust, the biggest in over three decades, and it’s an NDC matter.

“And it was an NDC parliamentary candidate who owns that cocaine, the $150 million bit,” he claimed.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour, responding to questions about his earlier allegations of cocaine smuggling and money laundering, insisted that he is being attacked by NDC supporters because he is exposing individuals behind these illegal activities.

“So when we bring these exposés, it is expected that the NDC will be uncomfortable, frustrated, and come at me personally. I am not perturbed by that,” he added.

On April 1, 2025, Rev Ntim Fordjour, who is also the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, alleged during a press conference that two aircraft, an air ambulance and a private jet, might have been used for drug trafficking or money laundering.

He claimed that one of the aircraft, Air MED flight L823 AM, landed in Ghana on March 20, 2025 and remained for five days with no record of transporting a patient.

Background:

A massive cocaine consignment, totaling 3.3 tonnes, was recently intercepted by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) while being transported from the Western Region to Accra.

During the operation at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast on March 4, 2025, authorities discovered 143 bags of cocaine concealed under sand in a tipper truck travelling from Takoradi to Weija in Accra.

The truck, carrying two individuals, was intercepted following intelligence-led operations by the NIB.

Field tests conducted by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) confirmed the substance as raw cocaine. The initial seizure weighed 2,974 kilograms.

Subsequent operations on March 8 led NIB officers to a suspect’s residence, where they discovered 13 more bags and one additional bag of suspected cocaine, totaling 345.07 kilograms, according to a report by 3news.com.

Laboratory analysis conducted by the Ghana Standards Authority and NACOC confirmed that the entire 3,319.68 kg shipment was high-quality cocaine, with a purity range of 50% to 70%.

It is believed the cocaine, with an estimated street value of about $350 million, was smuggled into Ghana using fishing vessels.

Two suspects, Isaac Quaicoe and Kenneth Cobbinah, have been arrested and are expected to appear in court on April 2, 2025.

Asante Kotoko stretched their unbeaten run to eight matches and maintained their lead at the top of the Ghana Premier League after a 1-1 draw with Heart of Lions at the Kpando Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Justice Blay opened the scoring for Kotoko with a sublime finish in added time of the first half, giving the visitors a slender lead heading into the break.

However, Heart of Lions responded swiftly, equalising just two minutes after the restart through Fawzi Ali. The second half produced end-to-end action, with both sides pushing for a winner, but neither could find the clinical touch in front of goal.

Despite being held, Kotoko will consider the point a valuable one as they extended their advantage at the summit to two points, thanks to Bibiani Gold Stars’ defeat to Dreams FC.

The Porcupine Warriors remain in control of the title race and will now turn their attention to a home fixture against Bechem United, where they aim to continue their impressive form.

For Heart of Lions, the draw keeps them in third place, preserving their strong standing in the league. They were competitive throughout and showed resilience to come from behind. Lions will next face Berekum Chelsea, another side in the hunt for a top-four finish.

The result leaves both teams with something to build on as the title race and battle for top-four positions continue to heat up in the final stretch of the season.

Medical Director, Former Appointees, Others Allegedly Bleed Hospital Dry

Sapeiman fake gold bust: National Security actively tracking mastermind

0

The Director in charge of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, Richard Jakpa, has disclosed that a manhunt is still underway for the alleged kingpin behind a sophisticated counterfeiting syndicate busted in Sapeiman, a suburb of Accra, in February.

During an exclusive tour of the crime scene with journalists, Mr. Jakpa revealed that the evidence retrieved from the site, described as overwhelming, has been left untouched to preserve its integrity as investigations continue.

The bust, which stunned many within the security establishment, led to the discovery of ten 40-foot containers filled with counterfeit Ghana cedi and US dollar notes.

Operatives believe that two of the containers were hastily moved out just before the operation commenced.

In a shocking twist, security personnel also uncovered several official Bank of Ghana (BoG) money boxes at the scene.

Authorities have since verified that these boxes are not replicas but genuine BoG property, raising further questions about how they ended up in the possession of the counterfeit syndicate.

One of the most eye-opening discoveries was an adjoining uncompleted building, deceptively modest in appearance, which served as the primary front for the illicit operation.

At its entrance, an elderly man locally known as the “Battery Doctor” ran a vehicle battery-charging service, a calculated ruse designed to deflect suspicion.

A walkthrough of the interior revealed stacks of counterfeit notes in multiple currencies and denominations.

Investigators also found a collection of fake gold bars, many of which were already peeling to reveal silver-colored metal beneath.

Mr. Jakpa confirmed that the operation was run by a highly organized criminal network. He stated that the group’s suspected mastermind, identified only as “Alhaji,” remains at large.

However, he assured journalists that National Security operatives are actively tracking his movements.

“We have solid evidence connecting Alhaji to the crime scene and to the broader network of illegal activities,” Mr. Jakpa said. “We are confident that it is only a matter of time before he is apprehended.”

The discovery of the counterfeit ring has sparked renewed concerns about financial security and the infiltration of national symbols by criminal elements.

National Security has pledged to bring all those involved to justice and to strengthen surveillance systems.

Nigerian woman jailed five years in Ghana for human trafficking

0

The Achimota Circuit Court has sentenced Nicky Isabella, a 22-year-old hairdresser, to five years imprisonment for trafficking two young Nigerian women to Ghana.

Isabella, popularly known as Bella, lured the victims to Ghana under the pretext of offering them jobs but forced them into prostitution upon arrival.

She was convicted after a full trial presided over by Mrs. Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong.

The victims, aged 22 and 23, were promised jobs at a supermarket in Adjiringanor, Accra.

Instead, Isabella allegedly seized their earnings and made them swear an oath on a Bible, cutting pieces of their pubic hair and threatening to use them in rituals if they disobeyed her orders.

The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Isaac Babayi, revealed that Isabella conspired with an accomplice, Nelly, who is currently at large, to traffic the victims from Nigeria to Ghana in May 2024.

ASP Babayi urged the court to impose a harsh sentence to deter similar crimes, emphasizing the premeditated and exploitative nature of Isabella’s actions.

The trial judge considered Isabella’s young age, first-time offender status, and time spent in custody but noted her lack of remorse and the societal threat posed by human trafficking.

Isabella, who had no legal representation, broke down in tears as the sentence was pronounced. Meanwhile, the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Ghana Police Service is investigating to apprehend Nelly.

The victims have been rescued and are receiving psychosocial support.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) William Ayariga, Director of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, stated, “Ghana is not a safe haven for human traffickers. Those who lure vulnerable people into Ghana and force them into prostitution will face the full force of the law.”

DSP Ayariga highlighted the Unit’s success in securing nine convictions last year, including a 20-year sentence under the Human Trafficking Act.

He reaffirmed the Unit’s commitment to arresting, investigating, and prosecuting offenders.

“We are not slowing down. We will continue arresting, investigating, and prosecuting offenders. No form of human trafficking or migrant smuggling will be tolerated in Ghana. Justice will prevail,” DSP Ayariga said.

Court documents revealed that Isabella admitted to forcing the victims into prostitution and collecting their earnings.

A search of her room uncovered a notebook used for recording proceeds and human hair, which she used to intimidate the victims.

GPL 2024/25: GoldStars title dreams suffer setback with defeat to Dreams FC

0

Bibiani GoldStars’ hope of moving to the top of the Ghana Premier League table suffered a setback as they lost to Dreams FC on Sunday.

The Miners were dealt a blow with a 2-0 defeat at the Tuba Astro Turf against the Still Believe lads.

Dreams came into the game on  the back of a good form in the league having lost none of their last five games. In that time, they had won four and drawn one.

GoldStars, on the other hand, had lost one of five while winning three and drawing one.

Salifu Abdul Razak opened the scoring for the home side for Karim Zito’s side after 35 minutes played.

The lead was extended shortly before the break as former Ghana U-17 defender Izdeen Mohammed also got onto the scoresheet.

The Miners went in search of the leveler in the second half but did very little to beat the Dreams FC goalkeeper who made some good serves as well.

Dreams held their nerves and kept the visitors at bay, going on to pick up all three points.

The win moves them to 36 points leveled with Bechem United and 10 points off the top spot.

#FixTheCountry to protest on May 1 over government’s poor handling of galamsey

Let’s defend, propagate achievements of our govt — MCE nominee

0

The various Tertiary Education Institution Network (TEIN) branches of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been urged to defend the party and actively propagate the achievements of the government.

Vincent Antwi Agyei, the President’s nominee for the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position, made the call when addressing the annual freshers’ summit (Akwaaba) of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) branch of TEIN in Sunyani.

He encouraged student members to remain loyal to the party and ensure their presence was felt through active participation in party activities within their respective constituencies.

According to Agyei, TEIN remains the lifeblood of the NDC, and the party recognizes its importance. He assured the students that their dedication would not go unrewarded.

The summit, themed Empowering the Next Generation: Strengthening Leadership and Activism for a Brighter Future, was organized to welcome and induct newly admitted level 100 students who are loyal to the NDC into the network.

Agyei stressed that the NDC deeply values the contributions of TEIN, particularly in the party’s victory during the 2024 General Elections. However, he urged the students not to be complacent but to continue working hard to educate the public about the government’s policies while also staying focused on their academic work.

“You will never regret working for the NDC because the government will reward you. I was sacked by the previous administration in 2017 as the Public Relations Officer of the Municipal Assembly. However, my dismissal inspired me to work harder for the NDC.

“I never dreamt of becoming a Municipal Chief Executive, but our President John Dramani Mahama has rewarded my hard work with this position,” Agyei told the network.

He concluded by encouraging the students to remain steadfast in their service to the party, emphasizing that “indeed, hard work truly pays,” and assuring them that the government would create opportunities for them as well.

On his part, Seid Abdul Basit, President of the UENR TEIN branch, described TEIN as a crucial arm of the NDC, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of both the party and the nation.

“As the youth wing of the NDC, TEIN is not just a student organization but the beating heart of youth activism, leadership, and progress,” he stated, reaffirming the group’s commitment to loyalty and promoting the ideals of the party.

Govt to restrict state institutions from importing goods that can be produced locally

0

The government is set to introduce a new policy that will require state institutions to purchase selected goods—including rice and sugar—exclusively from local producers, unless they obtain special approval from the Office of the President.

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, announced the measure during a meeting with the leadership of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), describing it as part of a broader effort to strengthen local industries, create jobs, and reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported goods.

“To support our local industries, the government will soon publish a list of items that all public sector agencies must procure locally,” Dr Forson said.

“Going forward, any government procurement from outside Ghana will require special approval from the Office of the President.”

Dr Forson questioned why Ghana continues to import basic commodities such as rice and sugar despite having the capacity to produce them locally.

According to him, no country can achieve meaningful development without a strong industrial foundation. He acknowledged the importance of trade but emphasised the need for deliberate policies to support domestic production.

He also raised concerns about the impact of smuggling on Ghanaian businesses, noting that illegal imports are undercutting local manufacturers.

“The government has identified smuggling routes,” he said, “and will soon introduce measures to prevent the influx of illegal goods that compete unfairly with locally manufactured products.”

As part of a wider industrialisation drive, Dr Forson proposed a working session with leaders in the private sector to discuss how local businesses can leverage the government’s 24-hour economy programme to increase production and stimulate economic growth.

President of the AGI, Dr Humphrey Ayim-Darke, welcomed the government’s move and described it as a positive step towards revitalising the country’s manufacturing sector.

He said ongoing dialogue between the state and industry stakeholders would help address the structural challenges facing local producers.

Nigerian hairdresser jailed 5 years for human trafficking

0

The Achimota Circuit Court has sentenced Nicky Isabella, a 22-year-old hairdresser, to five years’ imprisonment for trafficking two young Nigerian women to Ghana.

Isabella, popularly known as Bella, lured the victims to Ghana under the pretext of offering them jobs, but upon arrival, she forced them into prostitution.

She was convicted after a full trial presided over by Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong.

According to the facts presented in court, the victims, aged 22 and 23, were promised employment at a supermarket in Adjiringanor, Accra. However, the reality they encountered was vastly different.

Upon arrival, Isabella reportedly seized their earnings and forced them to swear an oath on a Bible. As part of the oath ritual, she cut pieces of their pubic hair and threatened to use them in rituals if they disobeyed her instructions.

The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Isaac Babayi, told the court that Isabella conspired with an accomplice named Nelly, who is currently at large, to traffic the victims from Nigeria to Ghana in May 2024.

ASP Babayi further urged the court to impose a harsh sentence, citing the premeditated and exploitative nature of Isabella’s actions as a serious threat to society.

In her ruling, the trial judge considered several factors, including Isabella’s young age, her status as a first-time offender, and the period she had already spent in custody. However, she also noted Isabella’s lack of remorse and the severity of the offense.

Isabella, who had no legal representation throughout the trial, broke down in tears as the sentence was handed down.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation to apprehend Nelly, the fugitive accomplice.

The two victims have since been rescued and are currently receiving psychosocial support to aid their recovery.

Commenting on the case, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) William Ayariga, Director of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, reiterated the country’s zero tolerance for human trafficking.

“Ghana is not a haven for human traffickers. Those who lure vulnerable people into Ghana and force them into prostitution will face the full force of the law,” he stated.

DSP Ayariga also highlighted the Unit’s achievements, revealing that they secured nine convictions last year, including a 20-year sentence under the Human Trafficking Act.

He reaffirmed the Unit’s commitment to continue cracking down on human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

“We are not slowing down. We will continue arresting, investigating, and prosecuting offenders. No form of human trafficking or migrant smuggling will be tolerated in Ghana. Justice will prevail,” he said.

Court documents further revealed that Isabella admitted to forcing the victims into prostitution and collecting all proceeds from their work.

A subsequent search of her room uncovered a notebook used to record the proceeds, along with strands of human hair, which she allegedly used to intimidate the victims.

‘Where Did You Hear Anyone Mention a Tire Burst in the Air?’

0

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister for Government Communications, has hit back at Akosua Manu, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, following her controversial comments regarding a video of an aircraft inspection as reported by GhanaWeb.

The video, released by the government, showed an inspection of the Covak aircraft, which had been accused of transporting illegal substances upon its arrival in Ghana.

In the footage, officials were seen working on a flat tire that needed repair before the aircraft’s departure.

Manu, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), challenged the video’s credibility, claiming the aircraft’s tire had burst mid-air. She suggested the video was staged and accused the minister of misleading the public.

Manu also raised concerns over alleged drug-related activities, referencing the $400 million worth of cocaine reportedly passing through the country in the first quarter of the year.

In response, Kwakye Ofosu strongly refuted the claims, labeling Manu’s comments as part of a “propaganda agenda.” He clarified that the tire issue occurred after the aircraft landed, not mid-flight, as suggested by Manu.

“Typical propagandist,” Kwakye Ofosu stated on X. “You heard me clearly say in the video I posted that the aircraft had a flat tire after landing. Where did you hear anyone mention a tire burst in the air?”

Ghana gas assures Ngalekyi of discharging its mandate to Nzema people

0

The Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) has assured traditional rulers and residents of Nzema, particularly those within the company’s catchment area, that it remains committed to meeting the demands and expectations of the people in the oil and gas enclave.

The company made this assurance following concerns raised by Nana Morkeh Kpanyinli IV, Chief of Ngalekyi, regarding the operations of the company and its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in the region.

In response to the chief’s claims about landowner compensation, Ghana Gas clarified that all landowners with appropriate documentation, whose lands were affected by its operations, had indeed received compensation.

However, the company acknowledged that ongoing litigation cases needed to be resolved before compensation could be fully disbursed to all affected parties.

This response was provided in a press release issued and signed by  Richard Ernest Kirk-Mensah, Head of Corporate Communications at the Ghana National Gas Company, and shared with the Ghana News Agency in Aiyinasi, located in the Ellembelle District.

Addressing concerns about flaring activities and their environmental impact, the company strongly denied the assertion that its flaring operations were detrimental to the health of community members, describing the claim as “unsubstantiated and not supported by scientific evidence.”

Ghana Gas emphasized that as an International Standardized Operation certified company, it adheres to high-quality international standards and prioritizes environmental protection, as well as the health and safety of both its staff and the community. The company’s commitment to responsible operations is further demonstrated by a report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The company also clarified that it is not responsible for gas pricing, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). Nonetheless, Ghana Gas expressed its willingness to advocate for a reduction in prices, should it be possible.

On the issue of employment opportunities, Ghana Gas acknowledged Nana Morkeh Kpanyinli IV’s concerns and reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the matter. Under the leadership of the company’s new Chief Executive Officer,  Judith Adjobah Blay, Ghana Gas is developing a strategy that aligns with the President’s agenda to reduce unemployment. The company stated that this plan would be communicated to all communities within its catchment area to benefit many indigenes.

Regarding the impact of its operations on fishing activities, the company assured the community that its pipelines are laid under the seabed and do not obstruct fishing operations. Ghana Gas further explained that international best practices dictate that fishermen avoid marked perimeters, but the offshore activities occupy less than 1% of the available space, leaving ample room for fishing.

Ghana Gas expressed that the response addresses the concerns raised by Nana Morkeh Kpanyinli IV and demonstrates its commitment to responsible operations, transparency, and ongoing community engagement.

‘An NDC parliamentary candidate owns part of it’ – Ntim Fordjour makes another wild allegation

Economic experts detail how government can widen the tax net after scrapping taxes

0

The repeal of these taxes are anticipated to enhance consumer spending The repeal of these taxes are anticipated to enhance consumer spending

Some Ghanaian economic experts have urged the government to adopt viable strategies to widen the tax net to enhance revenue generation.

They called for prudent and reasonable public expenditure to ensure accrued funds and revenues are not misused.

The recommendations follow President John Dramani Mahama’s assent to bills repealing the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy), Betting Tax, and Emissions Levy.

Jeffrey Kabutey Ocansey, Executive Director of Revenue Mobilisation Africa, speaking on an Accra-based television program, called on the government to prioritise investment in critical sectors like agriculture.

This includes mitigating damage to farmlands caused by illegal mining activities. He encouraged a targeted focus on the night economy and informal sector, areas with the lowest tax contribution levels.

Ocansey recommended developing a strategic industrial path through skills training to boost local production and create employment.

Another expert, Wonder Madilo, a development consultant, addressed the potential impact of US President Donald Trump’s 10% tariff on exports from Ghana and other countries.

He described it as a wake-up call for Ghana to develop homegrown solutions and eliminate unnecessary public spending. Madilo urged the government to prioritise economic growth and citizen well-being.

Also, Yaw Sompah, a finance analyst, cited Ghana Statistical Service data indicating 92% of businesses operate within the informal sector, posing challenges to effective tax collection.

He urged the Ghana Revenue Authority to introduce innovative revenue-boosting strategies following the E-levy repeal.Sompah recommended formalising the informal sector through identification, categorization, licensing, and registration to allow for proper regulation and monitoring.

Meanwhile, the government is introducing measures to increase disposable incomes and reduce the overall tax burden on citizens as part of its broader tax reform agenda.

Removing the E-levy is expected to increase disposable income for individuals and households, stimulate digital transactions, encourage financial innovation, and reduce business costs.

The repeal is anticipated to enhance consumer spending, energize economic activity across sectors, and provide financial relief to companies previously affected by the levy.

The Income Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, aims to provide additional income for affected individuals by removing certain withholding taxes.

Withdrawing the withholding tax on unprocessed gold purchases is projected to curb smuggling, ensuring Ghana derives optimal benefits from its mineral resources.

VAR official faces suspension for betting site incident on live TV

0

A high-profile VAR (Video Assistant Referee) official has found himself at the centre of a scandal and has been suspended after being caught checking a betting website during a live broadcast of a recent Bulgarian First League match.

The incident has sparked an investigation and widespread outrage, raising serious concerns about the integrity of refereeing in football.

The Bulgarian VAR official was seen scrolling through a betting site just moments before the kickoff of the match between CSKA Sofia and Lokomotiv Sofia.

Viewers were stunned by the act, which quickly sparked outrage on social media.

Following the incident, the official was suspended, and football authorities took swift action by launching a formal investigation into possible match-fixing allegations.

Hawk-Eye Innovations, the company responsible for VAR operations in the Bulgarian First League, issued a letter to the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) explaining their response.

They stated, “Hawk-Eye Innovations acknowledges with regret an incident involving one of its VAR operators during the Parva Liga match between PFC CSKA Sofia and PFC Lokomotiv Sofia on April 2, 2025, in the evening.”

The VAR official, whose name has not been disclosed, will remain suspended while the investigation is ongoing.

If found guilty, he could face severe consequences, including a ban from officiating and potential criminal charges.

The company noted, “Live footage from the camera situation in the VAR operations room documented the individual using a personal smartphone during the match and appearing to engage in inappropriate activities, which would constitute gross misconduct in relation to the responsibilities of their assigned role.”

They assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted during the official’s suspension.

If the findings indicate misconduct, they plan to terminate the individual’s contract.

However, they added, “If the individual is found to have been engaging in such inappropriate activity, we will look to dismiss the individual according to their contractual terms.”

As the scandal unfolded, fans expressed their shock and called for stricter regulations and better monitoring of referees’ activities to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Zabzugu residents reject claims linking pregnant woman’s death to DCE protest

0

Residents of Zabzugu in the Northern Region have denied reports that a pregnant woman was killed by youth protesting the nomination of Daniel Lakob Tanei as District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area.

According to the residents, the incident in question involved an armed robbery attack, not protest-related violence. They explained that a man and two women riding a motorbike were ambushed by armed robbers on the outskirts of Zabzugu—an event that took place prior to the protest.

Earlier reports alleged that an eight-month pregnant woman was shot and killed, while the man and the other woman sustained injuries during a violent protest against the DCE nominee.

However, locals insist that linking the tragic incident to the protest is inaccurate and misleading. They are urging the media and the public to report responsibly, warning that misinformation could stoke fresh tensions in the community.

The situation in Zabzugu has since stabilised, with residents calling for calm and factual reporting to prevent further unrest.

Bushmeat traders, hunters launch association to regulate activities

0

Traders in bushmeat and hunters have launched the National Bushmeat Association of Ghana to effectively regulate their business activities.

It is also to promote the sustainability of the bushmeat industry to benefit key actors in the industry and ensure biodiversity conservation.

Bushmeat is meat from wildlife species hunted for human consumption and sold in notable markets such as Atwemonom in Kumasi, Takoradi Market, Techiman, and the Kantamanto markets.

It is a primary source of fresh animal protein and income for hunters and traders.

In Ghana, the types of bushmeat hunted include monkeys, bats, grasscutter, antelope, and giant rats.

Madam Comfort Badu, the Queenmother of the Atwemonom Bushmeat Traders Association and President of the National Association, said the executive would educate hunters on best practices to prevent the use of “dubious means” to hunt.

“Some hunters use carbide to hunt in the wild; getting those people in the Association will prevent them from engaging in such practices. The health of the citizenry is essential,” she stated.

Madam Badu said the Association would ensure that the bushmeat industry could continue to exist to benefit stakeholders as well as ensure the safety of consumers and animals in the wild.

The Association was also to foster unity, facilitate skills development for members, regulate prices and avoid hoarding of meat, help to promote food safety, and facilitate conservation of wildlife.

The President recommended bushmeat to diabetic and hypertensive patients, explaining that the animals chewed grass, so their meat was healthy for humans.

Mrs Monica Quansah, the President of the Kantamanto Bushmeat Traders Association, said bushfires displaced animals in the wild, leading to the extinction of various species.

That affected their businesses since there would be a lack of game for sale, she said.

Dr Kofi Amponsah-Mensah, Director of Research at the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation Research, University of Ghana, said it was important to have sustainable and equitable solutions to balance human activities with biodiversity conservation to ensure sustainable livelihoods.

He said the Centre was establishing an alternative livelihood fund to support bushmeat traders and hunters by providing them with financial security for other income-generating activities in case their businesses declined.

“These traders, even though they do not take undertones to the species that they trade in, do not receive any support. There isn’t any health monitoring support that came during COVID-19; these women were left out,” he said.

“So, it’s almost like when these instances hit, their businesses almost collapsed and people basically went to ground zero, losing all their finances.”

“One of the things we are trying to do, or we’ve tried to set up, is a livelihood support fund that would encourage people to go into alternative livelihoods so that, in case such instances happen, there’s something that they can fall back on.”

Dr Amponsah-Mensah, who launched the Association at the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation Research, Legon, urged the traders and hunters to adopt safe and hygienic practices to protect themselves and their customers.

Mr Patrick Essumang, the Secretary of the Association, encouraged the media to reach out to members for factual information about the business to avoid misinforming the public about bushmeat.

The elected Executives are Madam Comfort Badu, President; Mr Yaw Fosu, Vice President; Mr Patrick Essumang, Secretary; Mrs Monica Quansah, Organising Secretary; Mr Ishmael Asibi, Assistant Organising Secretary; and Grace Tiwaah, Treasurer.

CDM urges President Mahama to address cocaine trafficking allegations

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take proactive measures to clarify allegations of drug trafficking into the country.

The group noted that if security agencies fail to properly investigate the allegations, Ghana could be perceived by the international community as a corridor for narcotics trafficking.

They emphasised that Ghana cannot become a hub for drug trafficking, considering the negative repercussions on its citizens and the potential damage to the country’s international reputation.

In a statement released on April 6, 2025, CDM warned that a lack of appropriate action could undermine investor confidence and lead to diplomatic tensions.

“Any hint of complicity, silence, or obstruction risks portraying Ghana as a permissive corridor for transnational criminal operations. Such a perception could have severe consequences, including loss of international investor confidence, heightened scrutiny of Ghanaian cargo and travelers abroad, and potential diplomatic strains, particularly with countries whose anti-narcotic agencies monitor global air traffic,” portions of the statement read.

The group also urged the government to allow security agencies to release documentation related to the flight, so it can be scrutinised by Parliament and international observers for the sake of transparency.

“We, therefore, advise the Government of Ghana, particularly the National Security and Civil Aviation Authorities, to publicly release all relevant flight, cargo, and clearance documentation and allow Parliament and international observers, if necessary, to review the facts. The people of Ghana demand the truth, not half-truths and political showmanship,” the statement added.

Earlier, the Assin South MP, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, demanded a security briefing regarding two aircraft, AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B, which he alleged carried cocaine and cash into the country.

This prompted President John Dramani Mahama to order an investigation into the matter.
