You promised to bring Ken Ofori-Atta in May, where is he? – Mahama Ayariga slams Afenyo-Markin

0

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has launched a scathing critique of Effutu MP and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, over what he described as a clear failure to honour his promise of bringing former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta into the country to aid in investigations by the Office of Special Prosecutor in May.

His comments come in response to an earlier assurance made by Afenyo-Markin on February 18, where he stated that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta was expected to return to Ghana in May 2025 following a medical assessment abroad.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, he asked: “Mr. Speaker, if I may say — referring to Afenyo-Markin — he promised this House that he would bring Ken Ofori-Atta in May. We are now in June. Where is Ken Ofori-Atta? Where is Ken? Where is Ken?”

He went further, questioning the Minority Leader’s credibility:
“You promised us that you would bring Ken to this House. You came here and made a promise. You stood on this floor and assured us that he would return in May. Now we are in June — where is Ken Ofori-Atta?”

He did not hold back, demanding accountability saying “Mr. Speaker, he should no longer be heard in this House. When he makes promises, he does not fulfill them. He comes here, makes statements, and never follows through — and yet he questions the promises of others.”

He concluded with a call for consistency and integrity in leadership: “When you made a promise, did you fulfill it? If we, as Members of Parliament, make promises, we must keep them.”

Nations FC Threatens Premier League Exit After Controversial Match Incident

Nations players

NATIONS FC is seriously considering withdrawing from the Ghana Premier League following a chaotic and controversial Matchday Day 33 encounter against Basake Holy Stars at the Ampain AAK II Arena.

The match took a dramatic turn after the referee awarded a second contentious penalty to the home side, prompting outrage from Nations FC officials and players, who walked off the pitch in protest.

Brands Manager Kennedy Boakye Ansah voiced strong dissatisfaction over the officiating and the broader treatment of the club, hinting at a possible disbandment of the team.

“Maybe we might disband Nations FC and forget about running football in this country because it’s not worth it,” he said. “Whatever we saw today and what we were subjected to, it’s not worth it. We might have to advise ourselves.”

Boakye Ansah revealed that the club will wait for the official match report but also intends to file a formal complaint with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Meanwhile, Nations FC owner and financier, Dr. Kwame Kyei, has strongly condemned the violent scenes, stating that no football title is worth human lives.

Both Dr. Kyei and club president Divine Kyei Boadu were reportedly assaulted by supporters of Basake Holy Stars, sparking outrage and safety concerns from the Nations FC camp.

“I was not happy with what happened. I have followed football for long, but yesterday’s incident was unacceptable,” he said. “To win the league at the cost of losing lives — I prefer to lose it” Dr. Kyei noted.

There are only two rappers in Africa

M.anifest appeared on London's Capital XTRA radio M.anifest appeared on London’s Capital XTRA radio

Ghanaian rap heavyweight, M.anifest, made waves during a recent appearance on London’s Capital XTRA radio, where he confidently staked his claim as Africa’s top MC.

When questioned about the continent’s hip-hop landscape, the award-winning lyricist replied sharply, “Only two rappers in Africa; me and nobody in particular,” he stated with a grin.

The remark, however, has sparked debates across social media.

While some fans celebrated it as playful hip-hop bragging, others recognised it as a justified claim from an artiste.

The Guardian recently crowned “Africa’s foremost rapper” in their 2025 global music review, highlighting M.anifest’s album “The Gamble” as “a masterclass in pan-African storytelling through rap.”

Renowned for his intricate wordplay, intellectual depth, and seamless fusion of African rhythms with global hip-hop, M.anifest has spent over a decade building an unimpeachable reputation.

His discography bridges Accra’s streets with international stages, earning collaborations with Damon Albarn, Burna Boy, and Vic Mensa.

Ato Forson lists some statutory funds government has released

0

Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has disclosed that the government has fulfilled all its statutory obligations by releasing payments to key development funds for 2025.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Dr Forson emphasised that the timely disbursement of these funds reflects the government’s dedication to fiscal decentralization and the revitalization of the local economy.

District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF)

Dr Forson announced that a total of GH¢987,965,073 had been transferred from the Consolidated Fund to the District Assemblies Common Fund as the first quarter allocation for 2025.

“As of yesterday, we have transferred the sum of GH¢987,965,073 from the Consolidated Fund to the District Assemblies Common Fund. This is the first quarter amount due, and the Administrator of the DACF is required to ensure that 80% of this amount is transferred directly to the Assemblies without fail,” he noted.

According to him, each district assembly is expected to receive a minimum of GH¢25 million this year. The funds will be directed towards model markets, health facilities, school infrastructure, potable water, school furniture, administrative support, and the completion of abandoned projects.

“25% of the amount is to be used to construct a model market in each district, 10% for health facilities including two CHPS compounds in rural assemblies, and another 10% for educational facilities such as a KG block, primary school block, and JHS block,” Dr Forson explained.

He continued, “A further 10% will go toward potable water with at least 10 boreholes in rural areas, and 10% for school furniture. The running cost for the assemblies will not exceed 5%, while 20% is dedicated to completing abandoned legacy projects.”

National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF)

On the health front, he reported that GH¢2,033,469,607 had been disbursed to the National Health Insurance Fund, covering the first quarter of 2025.

“This disbursement has enabled the National Health Insurance Scheme to settle arrears owed to healthcare providers,” he said. “It has also made it possible to begin implementation of the Free Primary Health Care initiative and the Ghana Medical Care Trust Program, also known as Mahama CARES,” he indicated.

Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund)

In the education sector, the finance minister announced that GH¢2,710,227,947 had been transferred to the GETFund covering January to April 2025.

“As earlier announced in the 2025 Budget, funding for the Free Senior High School programme is now fully under the GETFund,” he noted.

“As a result, the challenges, including feeding, which previously impeded the smooth implementation of the programme, have been resolved through this release,” he added.

Dr Forson urged his fellow lawmakers to monitor the utilization of these funds in their respective districts to ensure that they are used in accordance with the Cabinet guidelines approved by President Mahama.

“Honourable Members are encouraged to monitor the utilization of this amount sent to their respective Assemblies in line with the approved guidelines,” he stated.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and inclusive development.

“These payments clearly reflect our commitment to meet all statutory obligations in priority sectors of the economy,” he added.

Suicide bomber killed in Uganda on Christian holy day, army says

Security and forensic personnel are at the scene of the incident Security and forensic personnel are at the scene of the incident

Two people who the Ugandan army describe as “armed terrorists” have been killed in the capital, Kampala, as the country marks Martyrs Day – a Christian celebration to commemorate the faithful who died in the 19th Century.

A counter-terrorism unit “intercepted and neutralized” the two, one of whom was a suicide bomber, in the upmarket suburb of Munyonyo, army spokesperson Chris Magezi said in a post on X.

The incident took place near the Roman Catholic Munyonyo Martyrs’ Shrine, where a small group had gathered to pray, local media reported.

Reports also cited an explosion, with an eyewitness telling Uganda’s Daily Monitor newspaper that “the explosive detonated midway towards the church”.

There were no other casualties, the Reuters news agency reports.

The army spokesperson did not confirm the blast, but added that the authorities were on “heightened alert”.

One of those killed was a female “suicide bomber laden with powerful explosives”, Col Magezi said.

Footage from Uganda’s NBS Television showed security and forensics personnel at the scene of the incident, after having sealed off the area.

Col Magezi told Reuters that it was believed the two people were linked to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which is an affiliate of the Islamic State (IS) group.

The ADF has not yet commented.

Uganda has historically faced threats from the group.

Last year, the army warned citizens that the ADF was planning to attack places of worship, public events, schools and urban areas.

A year earlier, in 2023, the group was accused of carrying out a fatal attack on a Ugandan school which led to the killing of nearly 40 students.

The Martyrs Day event, one of the largest Christian pilgrimages in Africa, draws millions of believers each year to honour 45 people, made up of 22 Catholics and 23 Anglicans, who were killed between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II of Buganda for refusing to renounce their faith.

The monarch demanded they revert back to their traditional religion, but they refused and were accused of disobeying him and later burned to death for it.

Statutory payments fully made – Finance Minister tells Parliament

0

The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has revealed that statutory payments have been released to ease pressure and boost the local economy.

The Minister was summoned to Parliament following a Minority motion presented by the Member for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

Speaking on the floor of the House, Dr. Forson emphasized that a minimum of GHS25 million will be paid to all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

He disclosed that the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) Administrator has received GHS986 million, and not less than 80% of the funds must go directly to the MMDAs.

He stressed that the funds must be allocated as follows: 10% each for health, education, and completion of legacy projects, 5% for administrative use, and 15% for the construction of markets.

Additionally, he stated that an amount of GHS2.3 billion has been paid to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) fund, covering payments for the period from January to March 2025.

On the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the Minister informed Parliament that a total of GHS2.7 billion has been released.

Dr. Forson warned all MMDAs to prudently apply the funds as directed. He added that the DACF Administrator must present expenditure reports and performance reviews before any further releases.

While the Majority side commended the Minister for the disbursements, the Minority criticized the delays, urging that payments should reflect actual cash transfers and not just letters of release.

President John Dramani Mahama has firmly reiterated his commitment to the independence of Ghana’s anti-corruption agencies, assuring that he will not interfere with ongoing investigations or influence any cases to be dropped.

The assurance came during a visit by a delegation from the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption at the Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday May 3, where President Mahama emphasised his stance on upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served impartially.

“I have told the public and assured my Attorney General and Minister of Justice that I am not going to interfere in their work,” President Mahama said.

“If the anti-corruption agencies go after anybody, I am not going to try and influence them to drop any investigation against anybody, including those who served in the previous regime, many cases of whom we are currently investigating.”

Cedi’s true value is between GH¢10 and GH¢12

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the real value of the cedi lies between GH¢10 and GH¢12.

He emphasised that despite the cedi’s current performance, there needs to be a fair balance to sustain the economy.

According to him, the Minister for Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana are working to ensure that the cedi’s appreciation is balanced in terms of both demand and supply.

Speaking on June 3, 2025, President Mahama said, “The recent appreciation in the value of the cedi is something we’ve been monitoring closely. As the cedi began to strengthen and the dollar depreciated, we knew from basic A-level economics that this is a balance between imports and exports. What this means is that imports become cheaper, while exports become more expensive.”

He noted that the Economic Management Team has determined a realistic valuation for the cedi, cautioning that the currency cannot appreciate to GH¢4 or even GH¢1, as some have speculated.

“There must be a fair balance to reflect the true value of the cedi. Some people say, ‘Oh, it will come down to four,’ but of course, we know the true value is not GH¢4. If it went that low, it would destroy our export businesses. That’s why I met with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and the Finance Minister, and we all agreed that the cedi’s real value lies somewhere between GH¢10 and GH¢12.”

The President further stated that this range ensures a sustainable economic environment and prevents the cedi from falling below GH¢12.

“Fortunately, the recent forex auction has pushed the rate slightly above GH¢10, and it appears to have stabilized there. Going forward, I believe anything between GH¢10, GH¢11, and GH¢12 provides a fair value. It encourages our exports while ensuring that imports don’t become so cheap that they flood our markets with toothpicks, biscuits, coconuts, and other non-essential items.”

While the appreciation of the cedi has made imports cheaper, President Mahama cautioned importers to be responsible and not oversaturate the market with foreign goods at the expense of local products.

“This is a call to our exporters to take advantage of the cedi’s appreciation. Raw materials are now cheaper, fuel prices have dropped, transportation costs are lower, and port charges have reduced. These are clear incentives for export growth.

“But I’m also urging importers not to exploit the situation by flooding our markets with things like Nkatie burger and similar imports. Let’s focus more on import substitution. Let’s produce as many of the goods we import right here in Ghana,” he said.

Supreme Court overturns High Court ruling in Bissue, OSP legal battle

0

The Supreme Court has overturned a High Court ruling that dismissed an application filed by former Secretary to the Inter-Ministerial Committee Against Illegal Mining, Charles Bissue, at the Human Rights Division of the High Court.

The application was filed against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in relation to the handling of criminal complaints against him.

The case stems from allegations of corruption and related offences against Charles Bissue, following the airing of an investigative documentary by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas. Subsequent to the airing of the documentary, the OSP declared Bissue a wanted person.

In response, Bissue secured an injunction from the court to prevent the OSP from enforcing the arrest. In June 2023, he filed a case at the Human Rights Court, accusing the OSP of unlawfully securing the arrest warrant.

The OSP, however, denied the existence of any such warrant and argued that it did not require judicial authorization to arrest Bissue. The Kaneshie District Court, which Bissue claimed had issued the alleged warrant, also denied ever granting such an order. This position was supported by the Attorney-General, who represented the District Court.

Despite this, Bissue’s legal team cited a public interview granted by the Special Prosecutor on Joy FM’s Newsfile as evidence of the alleged warrant. They argued that the judge should listen to the interview audio before making a determination. However, the judge dismissed the case without reviewing the audio, which to his lawyer was contrary to an earlier indication that it would be considered.

Bissue subsequently filed a judicial review application at the Supreme Court, seeking to quash the High Court’s decision and prohibit the presiding judge from continuing to hear the case.

According to Bissue’s lawyers, the Supreme Court has now directed the High Court to determine whether the arrest warrant was lawfully obtained.

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, the Office of the Special Prosecutor has indicated that it now expects to cross-examine Bissue’s legal team in court.

Speaking to Citi News after the proceedings, Bissue’s lawyer, Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, emphasized the significance of the case in setting a precedent on the legal authority of the OSP to issue arrest warrants.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Criminal Court is expected to consider a plea agreement tomorrow between the OSP and Thomas Andy Owusu, the second accused in the case titled Republic v. Charles Bissue and Another.

Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, the lawyer of NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), has slammed the party’s Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako, after the latter claimed he had blocked him on social media.

Gary Nimako, in an interview on Asempa FM on Monday, June 2, 2025, said that he could no longer trust Appiah-Kubi and had blocked him because he (Appiah-Kubi) lied about not knowing about a variation application he (Nimako) filed to reduce Wontumi’s GH¢50,000 bail set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Reacting to this in an interview on Adom FM, Appiah-Kubi, former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante-Akim North, indicated that he cares less about Nimako blocking him, adomonline.com reports.

He insisted that the NPP Director of Legal Affairs did not inform him about the variation application he (Nimako) filed on behalf of his client.

“He is not someone I call. I don’t need his chats for anything. If he has blocked me, so what? He did not inform me that he was going to take another decision,” Appiah-Kubi is quoted to have said.

The former legislator went on to castigate Nimako, asserting that he was more knowledgeable than him when it comes to matters of law.

“I am a senior to him, and he should take his time. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all thy getting, get understanding,” he quoted the Bible, stressing that there is no basis for comparison between the two of them in terms of academic qualifications.

He further added that; “He cannot challenge me on my academic affairs. I can publicly advertise my results and let him come and publish his own. He is not someone I call. In fact, he would rather call me. He should never call me.”

Abuakwa South MP encourages Anne Daly to pursue medical education

0

Dr Kingsley Agyemang and Anne Sansa Daly Dr Kingsley Agyemang and Anne Sansa Daly

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, has urged Anne Sansa Daly to consider pursuing formal medical education if her passion for healthcare is genuine, amid concerns over her lack of a valid medical license to practice in Ghana.

Speaking in a recent interview on Oyerapa TV, he advised that the state should adopt a more constructive approach in addressing the controversy surrounding her.

“If it is true that Anne is not a medical doctor, she has every opportunity to enroll in medical school. If she desires to become a doctor, she can focus on that dream and achieve it. Why can’t we support her to become a medical doctor in the next seven or eight years?

“She can be in medical school even while serving a prison term. Let us use the cohesive power of the state to help her,” he added.

According to the lawmaker, people’s passions and intentions matter, and if her ambition is genuine, it could be channeled to save lives in the future.

“If she indeed becomes a doctor, many lives can be saved,” he added.

President John Dramani Mahama has revoked the appointment of Anne Sansa Daly as a member of the Board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

The revocation followed public uproar over her alleged false claims of being a medical doctor.

A letter dated May 23, 2025, signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, and addressed to the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, confirmed the decision.

“I write to inform you that the President of the Republic has, with immediate effect, revoked the appointment of Anne Sansa Daly as a member of the Board of the National Health Insurance Authority. The President has nominated Prof. Dr. (Med) Ernest Yorke to replace her,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, has formally requested the Ghana Medical and Dental Council (GMDC) to verify the medical credentials of Anne Sansa Daly.

“It Is Very Wrong for Officials to Promote Their Social Media Using Official Issue

0

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has strongly condemned public officials who use their personal social media accounts to share government-related information.

According to Ghana Web, Speaking on Citi FM on June 3, 2025, he specifically criticized Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai, for posting updates on the investigation of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, via his personal Facebook page.

Agyepong emphasized the importance of separating private communication channels from official government communication, calling the practice “unethical” and contrary to the president’s code of conduct.

He stated, “I think it is very wrong for state officials to be promoting their social media presence using official issues. That is completely unethical.”

He argued that official updates should only be disseminated through proper institutional channels rather than personal accounts.

The controversy followed Srem Sai’s May 29 post detailing criminal investigations into Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

The Deputy AG revealed that Wontumi faces allegations including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

However, he stated an ongoing probe into a broader international organized crime network involving Wontumi, with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) collaborating with international agencies.

THE FIFA Women’s Football Campaign 2025, organised by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), was a major success at Koforidua Technical University (KTU), attracting 320 basic school girls.

The initiative, led by Jennifer Amankwaa Sarpong, Head of Women’s Football Development, aims to promote football among girls and raise awareness of opportunities in the sport.

The campaign supports FIFA’s global goal of involving 60 million girls and women in football by 2027. In line with this, the GFA has developed a five-pillar strategy focusing on grassroots development, marketing and sponsorship, talent identification, refereeing, and education.

At the event, participants took part in football drills, received mentorship, and learned about careers in the sport. The campaign also featured the ‘Catch Them Young Referee’ initiative, which introduces young girls to refereeing at an early age.

Each participant received a certificate of inclusion, recognising her involvement and encouraging future participation in football activities.

Jennifer Amankwaa Sarpong emphasised the importance of starting young. “We want to empower girls not only to play but to lead in every area of football,” she said.

Through this campaign, the GFA continues to make strides in building a strong foundation for women’s football in Ghana while contributing to FIFA’s global vision.

Akufo-Addo, who looked delighted by the Asantehene’s visit, greeted him warmly, saying “The king of kings,” prompting both men to burst into hearty laughter.

Additionally, he was ushered into the house, where he was greeted and welcomed by several former top government officials, including former Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare; Senior Advisor to the former president Albert Kan-Dapaah; former Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul; and Samuel Abu Jinapor, who previously served as Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, among other prominent personalities.

Otumfuo’s visit to the former president comes on the back of his courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House on Monday, June 2, 2025, marking his first visit to the presidency since Mahama assumed office.

President Mahama described the visit as, “It is not just a ceremonial visit, but a strong affirmation of the enduring bond between traditional authority and the democratic governance of the republic.”

Ghana’s Cedi Ranks as World’s Best Performing Currency

0

Ghana’s cedi has stunned global markets in 2025, becoming the world’s best-performing currency with a nearly 50% surge against the dollar. This comeback—fueled by soaring gold prices, strict Bank of Ghana policies, and a $3 billion IMF program—marks a sharp turnaround from its 2022 collapse, triggered by a debt crisis and inflationary spiral. Other factors include increased FX reserves, commodity windfalls, and political stability under President Mahama. Moreover, strategic moves such as forex market reforms and domestic gold-settlement mandates have helped strengthen Ghana’s external position. Despite the progress, the central bank remains cautious, with Governor Johnson Asiama emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balanced currency management. Nevertheless, investors are cheering the cedi’s rally, which was largely unexpected.

Government calls for reliable data ahead of 2025 business survey

0

By Francis Ntow

Accra, June 3, GNA – The Government Statistician, Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, has encouraged businesses to provide accurate data and cooperate with enumerators ahead of the 2025 Ghana Integrated Business Establishment Survey II (IBES II).

The exercise, scheduled from July 10 to September 10, 2025, aims to support national economic planning, inform investment decisions, and contribute to Ghana’s development agenda, including the 24-hour economy initiative. A report on the findings is expected by December 31, 2025.

Speaking at the 2025 IBES II training of trainers’ workshop in Winneba on Monday, Dr. Iddrisu called on all selected businesses nationwide to give their full cooperation, stressing that the data being collected would serve but the entire nation.

He emphasised that providing accurate and timely data aligned with the mandate of the Statistical Service Act, 2019 (Act 1003), which supports national development.

The survey will cover sectors such as transport and storage, accommodation and food services, telecommunications, computer programming, consultancy, computing infrastructure, real estate, administration, arts, sports, and recreation.

Dr Iddrisu stated that IBES II data would estimate the value and structure of business operations, evaluate innovation in manufacturing, assess the impact of environmental goods and services, and document business challenges affecting productivity and competitiveness.

Additionally, the survey will provide benchmark data for rebasing Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the Producer Price Index (PPI), and the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) while measuring sectoral and regional contributions to national output.

Dr Iddrisu urged trainers to prioritise excellence in planning, training, and execution, as their work will directly impact the 3,200 field officers participating in the exercise.

“The success of IBES II depends on the quality of training you deliver. The data we collect will only be as reliable as the people who collect it—and you are the first line of quality assurance. Your role is indispensable,” he said.

Dr Anthony Kraka, IBES II Project Coordinator, explained that the 2025 IBES would extend beyond traditional data collection and GDP rebasing to include domestic production and export challenges.

This expansion will inform policy decisions addressing economic constraints, including those tied to the implementation of the 24-hour economy initiative, enhancing business operations and competitiveness.

The 2025 IBES marks Ghana’s fifth survey, following those conducted in 1962, 1987, 2003, and 2015, targeting 44,652 establishments across all 16 regions.

Ex-Kotoko striker Andy Kumi seeks clarification from Medeama SC over contract termination rumors

0

The camp of former Asante Kotoko Francis Andy Kumi is seeking clarification from GPL giants, Medeama Sporting Club over reports that the player’s contract will be terminated after the season.

As reported by Ghanasoccernet.com, the one-time GPL winners are planning to part ways with the former Kotoku Royals striker due to his poor performance in the ongoing campaign.

The report further states that this decision signals the club’s intent to restructure and build a more competitive squad for the 2025/26 season under newly-appointed coach Ibrahim Tanko.

Reacting to the news, the player’s management disclosed that they are yet to receive official communication from the club, revealing that the player himself is not happy at the club due to lack of playing time.

“We heard a news concerning the player’s future at Medeama SC. They are attributing it to poor performance, which isn’t true.

“There is a lot going on at Medeama, and one is favoritism. Kumi was happy to play and give out his best to the club following his arrival, but he wasn’t given the opportunity during Coach Adotey’s time due to favoritism coming from the management.

“The same thing is happening under Coach Ibrahim Tanko. Per our investigation, Coach Tanko was ready to use Kumi, but some leaders of the club pushed against his decision,” said the management.

However, Andy Kumi has written to enquire from the club as to whether they are behind the article or intend to lay him off after the season.

He further urged the club to approach the portal to retract the inaccurate claims, stating that the article is not only misleading but also damaging his reputation.

The letter reads: “I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to address a recent article published by a blogger claiming that the club intends to lay me off due to perceived underperformance. I believe this statement is not only misleading but also damaging to my reputation and standing within the team.

“First and foremost, I kindly request that the management approaches the blogger to retract the inaccurate claims made in the article. The assertion that my performance has fallen below team standards is unfounded, and it is essential for both my personal integrity and the club’s image that this misinformation is corrected.

“Furthermore, I would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm my commitment to the team and my dedication to playing for the team at all times when given the opportunity. It is my belief that any concerns regarding my play would be better addressed through direct dialogue. Open communication channels between myself and management are vital for fostering a supportive and productive environment.

Lastly, I would appreciate your support in ensuring that any future discussions about my performance and any other issues are conducted privately and respectfully. In this way, we can maintain a positive atmosphere within the club while allowing for constructive feedback.

“Thank you for considering my requests. I am hopeful for a positive resolution and look forward to your response.”

The 26-year-old still has a contract for another year and would like to pledge himself to the club for years to come.

Yet, he is becoming increasingly anxious about his future, especially with circulating rumors.

Goldbod to open ‘Ghana Gold Village’ as Africa’s premier gold jewellery hub

Sammy Gyamfi is the CEO of GoldBod Sammy Gyamfi is the CEO of GoldBod

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has announced government plans to open the ‘Ghana Gold Village.’

This development, which will be modeled after the Dubai Gold Souk in the United Arab Emirates, is intended to serve as “a hub for gold jewellery and ornaments in Africa.”

Addressing industry players at the ongoing Mining in Motion Summit in Accra on June 3, 2025, Sammy Gyamfi explained that this initiative is part of the government’s efforts to increase value addition in the country’s gold production.

“Let me also say that GoldBod is open to symbiotic partnerships to realise President Mahama’s vision to establish a ‘Gold Village’ in Ghana as a hub for gold jewellery and ornaments in Africa,” he revealed.

He also highlighted other key interventions by GoldBod aimed at helping Ghana fully benefit from its gold resources.

The GoldBod CEO further disclosed plans to clamp down on smuggling and build a robust, well-coordinated gold trading sector focused on prosperity for Ghanaians.

Since its inception, the Ghana GoldBod has recorded many successes in its operations.

Speaking to the gathering, the CEO revealed that for the first time in Ghana’s history, gold exports from the artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) sector have surpassed exports from large-scale producers, marking what he described as a “defining moment” in the nation’s extractive sector.

Despite these significant achievements, Sammy Gyamfi emphasised that his organization will not rest on its laurels but will continue to work for the benefit of its partners, stakeholders, and Ghanaians at large.

“I wish to extend a warm invitation to the LBMA, the World Gold Council, the OECD, and the global investor community across the entire mining value chain to partner with Ghana in sustainable mining, responsible sourcing, and value addition to achieve the best mutual outcomes.

“Ghana is ready! GoldBod is prepared. Together, we can all sail to higher realms of dividends in the mining sector, where the environment is preserved, lives are improved, and communities are uplifted,” he said.

Inter Milan pay tribute to Simone Inzaghi following his departure

Simone Inzaghi has left Inter Milan following their defeat in the Champions League final Simone Inzaghi has left Inter Milan following their defeat in the Champions League final

Inter Milan have paid an emotional tribute to outgoing manager, Simone Inzaghi, following his departure from the club by mutual agreement, just days after their 5-0 Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

In a heartfelt video shared across the club’s social media platforms, the Nerazzurri honoured Inzaghi’s time at the helm, showcasing highlights of his tenure, from trophy celebrations to touchline passion, and thanking him for his service.

Inzaghi, 49, took charge of Inter in 2021 and delivered a respectable haul of silverware during his four-year spell, winning one Serie A title, two Coppa Italia titles, and three Supercoppa Italiana titles.

He also led the club to two Champions League finals, a narrow 1-0 loss to Manchester City in 2023, followed by the recent humbling against PSG.

Despite narrowly missing out on the 2024–25 Serie A title by just a point to Napoli, Inzaghi’s tenure will be remembered for restoring consistency and competitiveness to Inter both domestically and in Europe.

His exit comes just ahead of the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States between June 14 and July 13, 2025, where Inter are set to compete, as are Saudi Arabian giants Al-Hilal, the club Inzaghi has been heavily linked with.

While Inter begin the search for a new head coach, the club’s tribute signals the end of an era and underlines their appreciation for Inzaghi’s contributions to their modern resurgence.

“I’m pleased to report that under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, and the NDC, for the first time in several months, transfers to all Statutory Funds have been made promptly and in full. Mr. Speaker, we have not just made them but also in full,” he said.

The Minister revealed that the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has received a total of GH¢2,710,227,947 for the first quarter—covering January, February, and March—to address challenges facing the Free Senior High School (SHS) project.

“Similarly, the GETFUND has received a total of two billion, seven hundred and ten million, two hundred and twenty-seven thousand nine hundred and forty-seven Ghana cedis, for the months of January, February and March. All transferred and received by the GETFUND,” he stated.

A total amount of two billion, thirty-three million, four hundred and sixty-nine thousand, six hundred and seven Ghana cedis has been disbursed to the NHI fund, and they have received the funds,” he told the House.

He added that the timely release of funds has enabled the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to settle arrears owed to healthcare providers and support key initiatives such as the Free Primary Healthcare programme and the Ghana Medical Care Trust Programme, also known as MahamaCares.

“These disbursements have enabled the NHI Scheme to settle arrears owed to health care providers and to implement the free primary healthcare and the Ghana Medical Care Trust Programme otherwise known as MahamaCares,” he said.

The Finance Minister emphasized that these efforts reflect the Mahama administration’s renewed commitment to efficient public financial management and social investment.

Ghana confirms 26 new Mpox cases; total infections rise to 45

0

By Linda Naa Deide Aryeetey

Accra, June 3, GNA – The Ghana Health Service(GHS) has confirmed 26 new Mpox cases, bringing the total case count to 45.

In an update, the GHS said two people are currently on admission, with no deaths recorded.

It added that the Service was vigilant across all 16 regions and continued to monitor infections through its surveillance system.

Regional health directorates have activated public health measures, including contact tracing, to prevent further spread.

The GHS is also working with the Ministry of Health to implement containment strategies.

Prof Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director General of the GHS, earlier reassured the public that Ghana’s health system remains vigilant, with established protocols in place for detecting, managing, and controlling infectious diseases.

The GHS urged the public to maintain hygiene, avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, and report suspected cases to the nearest health facility.

It stated that the government is committed to protecting public health, saying,” We have the capacity and expertise to manage this situation and prevent a larger outbreak.”

Mpox is a viral disease transmitted through close contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated material.

Symptoms include rash, fever, headaches, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.

The GHS has advised frequent handwashing with soap and water or hand sanitizer, especially before or after touching sores.

It recommends wearing masks, covering lesions when around others, keeping skin dry and uncovered, avoiding shared items, disinfecting shared spaces, and using saltwater rinses for mouth sores.

In August last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) due to a new variant spreading in Africa.

Mpox cases have since been reported in over 13 African countries.

Last year, Africa recorded over 17,000 suspected Mpox cases and 517 deaths, according to the Africa CDC.

The WHO has since approved the first Mpox vaccine to increase access for millions at risk, particularly in Africa, where the latest outbreak has infected more than 20,000 people.

(L-R) A photo collage of Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, Chairman Wontumi and Gary Nimako (L-R) A photo collage of Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, Chairman Wontumi and Gary Nimako

Diddy paid $100,000 cash to buy hotel asault footage

The amount was for a CCTV footage of Diddy (pictured) assaulting Cassie Ventura The amount was for a CCTV footage of Diddy (pictured) assaulting Cassie Ventura

Eddy Garcia, an InterContinental hotel security employee, was the first witness to take the stand today.

Garcia was a security officer at the hotel in 2016 and testified under an immunity order after invoking his 5th Amendment right not to self-incriminate.

Here’s what Garcia said today, so far:

The hotel incident: Garcia testified that he was working at the hotel in March 2016 when he was informed of a domestic dispute. After reviewing the surveillance footage, he didn’t initially realize the two individuals involved were Sean “Diddy” Combs and Cassie Ventura, only later learning it was them, he said.

Garcia said he believed that law enforcement was not called to respond to the dispute at the time because Ventura “did not request the presence of police or medical attention.”

The surveillance video: The same day of the incident, Combs’ chief of staff Kristina Khorram asked Garcia if it was possible for her to “get a copy” of the video. Garcia said he told her she’d have to reach out to “hotel management or get a subpoena.”

Garcia testified that Combs himself later called the security desk sounding “very nervous” and asked him to provide the video, saying that if the footage got out, he felt “it could ruin him.”

Combs called Garcia’s personal phone later that night and asked again to see the footage, telling Garcia he’d “take care” of him, which Garcia testified he understood Combs meant financially.

The handoff: Garcia testified that he called his boss Bill Madrano to tell him that Combs was willing to pay for the video. Madrano, Garcia said, asked if he’d pay $50,000 for it, which Garcia confirmed with Combs he would.

Garcia testified that the next day, Madrano downloaded the video onto a thumb drive that he gave to Garcia, who handed off the thumb drive to Combs in person. “Eddy, my angel, I knew you could help,” Garcia said Combs told him.

Garcia testified that he signed an NDA on Combs’ company’s letterhead and confirmed the footage he provided was the only copy. Garcia also testified that during that meeting with Combs he spoke with Ventura on FaceTime, who assured him that she “wanted this to go away too.”

The payment: Garcia testified that Combs gave him $100,000 cash after he signed the NDA. Garcia said Combs asked him how he was planning to spend the money and suggested Garcia not make any big purchases.

Garcia testified that he split the money with Madrano and Henry Elias, the other officer on duty at the time of the incident. He testified that he gave $50,000 to Madrano and $20,000 to Elias, and that he bought a used car in cash with the $30,000 he kept for himself.

He said he did not deposit any of the money into a bank account or report it on his taxes.

Government expands free tertiary education to include PWDs

Members of the Ghana Federation of Disability with Haruna Iddrisu Members of the Ghana Federation of Disability with Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on members of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations to register with the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) in order to benefit from the free tertiary education policy promised by President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the federation, Iddrisu stated that the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, is currently collecting data on Persons with Disabilities to support the effective implementation of the inclusive education policy.

He assured government’s commitment to providing accessible and equitable education for all, stating that the initiative is in line with President Mahama’s broader resetting agenda.

“The best of John Mahama is ahead of us and not behind us. To measure John Dramani Mahama, let’s measure him today and in the future. The president is committed to ensuring accessible and equitable education for all,” he said.

According to myjoyonline.com report on June 3, 2025, the federation had urged the minister to follow up on President Mahama’s campaign promise to introduce inclusive education programmes that cater specifically to students with disabilities.

In response, Iddrisu assured the group that, “The president will honour the spirit and letter of his pledge.”

As part of efforts to operationalise the policy, the minister announced the formation of a committee to develop a roadmap for implementing free tertiary education for Persons with Disabilities.

The committee will be chaired by Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak; and include the SLTF Chief Executive Officer, the President of the Ghana Federation of Disability, and two additional representatives nominated by the federation, including at least one woman.

President of the Federation, Joseph Atsu Homadzie, expressed appreciation for the government’s continued support but also highlighted areas that require urgent attention.

He called for increased investment in accessible infrastructure and assistive technologies to enhance educational outcomes for Persons with Disabilities.

Homadzie also reiterated the need for the introduction of sign language education at the basic school level, another key pledge made by President Mahama, and requested timely delivery of tools and devices to support learners with special needs.

The meeting forms part of ongoing stakeholder consultations aimed at fulfilling the government’s inclusive education agenda.

UN aid trucks come under attack in Sudan

0

The convoy included trucks from the UN's World Food Programme (archive shot) The convoy included trucks from the UN’s World Food Programme (archive shot)

United Nations trucks carrying aid for the war-torn Sudanese region of North Darfur have been attacked, with initial reports of “multiple casualties”, a spokesperson for the organisation has said.

The Sudanese government said “guards, drivers and civilians” had been killed in the assault, which it blamed on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group fighting the army in a gruelling civil war.

However, the RSF blamed the army for the assault, which took place in the town of el-Koma on Monday night.

The UN has not said who was responsible, but explained that the convoy was attacked while waiting to leave for el-Fasher, a beseiged city where famine conditions have been reported.

El-Fasher is the last major location in North Darfur under army control. Civilians and military personnel there have been under attack by the RSF for over a year.

Four members of the UN convoy travelling to el-Fasher were killed on Monday night and two more were injured, RSF spokesperson Basha Tabiq said in a post on X.

The el-Koma Emergency Room, a group of local volunteer responders, posted a video of a burnt out truck, loaded with sacks of supplies, on Facebook. They blamed the attack on “Sudanese army drones”.

El-Koma, which is controlled by the RSF, has previously been the target of frequent attacks in the conflict between the paramilitary group and the army.

Assaults on the city have resulted in civilian deaths and damaged key infrastructure.

The el-Koma Emergency Room said at least 89 people were killed or injured after Sudanese army warplanes launched airstrikes in the town on Sunday. The army has not responded to this accusation.

According to the Sudan Tribune news website, the planes struck a busy market in el-Koma.

The war, which began more than two years ago, has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

On Tuesday Eujin Byun, a spokesperson for the UN refugee agency, said more than four million people have fled since the beginning of the conflict.

The civil war broke out in 2023 following a vicious struggle for power between the army and the RSF.

The two had jointly staged a coup to derail Sudan’s transition to democracy, before their commanders fell out.

“Ofori-Atta Was Never a Target Until Power Changed Hands” — Amidu Exposes OSP’s Political Motives

0

Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has criticized the current leadership of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) under William Kissi Agyebeng, accusing the institution of politically motivated actions in its recent focus on Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to MyNewsGH, Amidu contends that Ofori-Atta, who served as Finance Minister, was never targeted for investigation while in office despite numerous corruption allegations.

According to Amidu, the renewed scrutiny only came after the change of government, suggesting a shift in priorities aligned with political interests rather than genuine anti-corruption efforts.

He pointedly remarked that Ofori-Atta “was never invited to assist the investigations… until 24 January 2025, when there had been a change in government.”

Amidu implies this timing shows an opportunistic approach by the OSP to gain favor with the new administration and secure its financial resources.

He describes the recent move to label Ofori-Atta a suspect as a “ruse” designed to damage his reputation through media portrayal, creating a “prejudicial presumption of guilt.”

Amidu also criticized the OSP for neglecting to investigate the high-profile Agyapa Royalties deal, a matter the Special Prosecutor had pledged to Parliament to look into but failed to pursue.

He suggests that this failure was politically convenient under the previous government, which Ofori-Atta was part of.

Amidu argues that the OSP under Agyebeng is primarily focused on maintaining its budget and influence by aligning with the current government rather than fulfilling their mandate to combat corruption impartially.

He warns this approach risks turning the OSP into a tool for political expediency rather than justice.

Where is Ofori-Atta? – Ayariga questions Afenyo-Markin

0

The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has questioned the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, over the continued absence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who has failed to present himself to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for questioning in connection with alleged corruption-related offences.

Afenyo-Markin had earlier assured Parliament that Ofori-Atta would return to Ghana by May 2025, following a medical assessment abroad.

However, as of June 3, 2025, there has been no confirmed return, prompting Ayariga to accuse the Minority Leader of reneging on his assurances.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, Mahama Ayariga also criticised the Minority caucus for its inconsistent posture, referencing their failure to show true solidarity at the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) during the recent detention of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

“He promised this House that he would bring Ken Ofori-Atta in May; we are in June, where is Ken Ofori-Atta? He came to this House and made a promise. Mr. Speaker, he should not be heard in this House because when he makes promises, he cannot fulfil them. When we make promises, you have to fulfil them,” he said.

0

The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) today inaugurated its new nine-member board at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Finance in Accra, marking a pivotal moment for Ghana’s sovereign wealth fund as it prepares to navigate recent legislative amendments and chart a new strategic course.

Mr. Richard Kwame Asante assumes the role of Board Chairman, leading a distinguished panel that includes MIIF’s Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Justina Nelson.

The other board members are: Dr Zakaria Mumuni, First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana; Mr. Edward Apenteng Gyamena, Commissioner of Domestic Tax Revenue, Ghana Revenue Authority; Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Member of Parliament, Ablekuma South; Mr. Yakubu Mohammed, Member of Parliament, Ahafo Ano South East; Mr. Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, Member of Parliament, Prestea Huni-Valley.

The rest are: Ms. Yaa Asantewaa Asante, Director, Public Debt Management Office, Ministry of Finance; Ms. Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, Director of Communications, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

The new board brings together expertise from across government and parliament, with representation from key ministries and constituencies.

The Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who inaugurated the board emphasized the board’s responsibility to provide strategic leadership during this transition period, charging members to collaborate closely with management to revitalize the fund’s performance.

He gave the assurance that the Ministry of Finance stands ready to provide necessary guidance to ensure MIIF fulfills its mandate while maximizing benefits from Ghana’s mineral wealth for citizens.

Mr Asante expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the confidence placed in the board members, pledging unwavering commitment to address existing challenges and transform them into opportunities for growth.

“The new board and management are committed to working tirelessly to correct past shortcomings and position the Fund for success,” Mr Asante said in his acceptance speech.

Mrs. Nelson reinforced MIIF’s core mission as Ghana’s sovereign wealth fund, established to strategically manage and invest the nation’s mineral royalties and equity stakes in mining ventures.

She said MIIF’s mandate is unambiguous: maximize long-term value from Ghana’s abundant mineral resources while ensuring sustainable economic benefits for current and future generations.

“We recognise the responsibilities ahead, particularly given recent amendments to our Act, and stand ready to collaborate with the board to transform the Fund.”

The board members after the inauguration at the ministry later engaged directly with MIIF’s management and staff, signaling a collaborative approach to the fund’s future direction.

Government presents bill to increase Energy Sector Levy to GH₵1

0

Finance Minsiter, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson Finance Minsiter, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has presented the Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill to Parliament, seeking an increase in the current rate.

According to the minister, the bill aims to address financial challenges in the energy sector, particularly to raise funds to cover energy sector indebtedness, including payment shortfalls and reducing the debt associated with the Energy Sector Recovery Levy (ESLA).

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the minister underscored that the recent appreciation of the cedi would absorb the impact of this increase, with no significant net effect expected on consumers.

In response, the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, accused the government of deceiving Ghanaians by pretending to remove taxes while introducing more taxes.

“You claimed to have cancelled the E-Levy, but you eventually want to reintroduce the E-Levy,” he stated.

In response, the Majority Leader of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, argued that the new levy, expected to be pegged at GH₵1, is insignificant in the face of the need to support the energy sector and deal with the persistent issue of erratic power supply, also known as ‘dumsor.’

“What is before us is not the E-Levy; what is before us is the Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill. It is saying that Ghanaians should give just GH₵1 each when they buy a litre of fuel so that we can end dumsor,” he stated.

The Second Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, who was presiding, referred the bill to the Finance Committee for further action.

The Energy Sector Recovery Levy, established under the Energy Sector Levies Act, 2015, and amended in 2021, currently imposes a 20 pesewas per litre charge on petrol and diesel and 18 pesewas per kilogram on LPG to address the sector’s $1.2 billion debt and fund fuel for thermal power plants.

New Black Queens forward, Abigail Kofi Kim, has set her sights on making history with the team after making her senior debut for Ghana in their recent 3-3 draw with Côte d’Ivoire on Friday, May 30, 3035.

The dynamic forward, who was born in Liberia and raised in the United States, joined the national team for the first time ahead of the friendly and is already dreaming big.

Kim, 26, was handed her maiden call-up following a stellar season with Fomget GSK in the Turkish Women’s League, where she scored 17 goals and contributed 10 assists, playing a vital role in helping the club secure the league title.

Her performances caught the attention of Ghana coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren, who added her to the squad as the Black Queens ramp up preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Speaking after her debut, in an interview with the team’s media, Kim expressed her excitement at joining the team and shared her ambitions with Ghana’s senior women’s side.

“It’s exciting, and I’m looking forward to getting started with the team. They’ve been welcoming, and everyone seems lovely and nice. If we all work together and follow the coach’s instructions, we can achieve great things. My hope is to win WAFCON and then qualify for the World Cup,” she said.

The forward, who previously featured for the United States at U-18, U-20, and U-23 levels, now wears the Ghanaian colours with pride and is determined to help the Black Queens return to the top of African football.

The closest Ghana has come to WAFCON glory was in 2006, when they finished as runners-up after losing to rivals Nigeria in the final.

Since then, the Black Queens have been determined to reclaim their place at the top of African women’s football.

With a powerful blend of experience, skill, and fresh hunger, Abigail Kim is poised to become a key figure in Ghana’s WAFCON campaign and possibly lead them to their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification.

As the team continues to gel ahead of the tournament, fans will be hoping Kim’s goal-scoring form and infectious energy will be a difference-maker in the Black Queens’ resurgence on the continental and global stage.

Actress Patience Ozokwo responds after being accused of taking widow

Patience Ozokwo has responded to claims she took a sick and old widow’s land following the de@th of her husband, because she has no son.

A mother named Ngozi Okonkwo Ike and her daughter Ebere Okonkwo Ike, from Amechi Idodo in Nkanu East L.G.A of Enugu State, granted multiple interviews with several videos going viral.

In the videos, Ebere said Patience Ozokwo should be held responsible if anything happens to her mother. She further claimed that Patience Ozokwo took the only land their late father left for them because her mother has two daughters and no son.

She added that her father’s kinsman whom her mother begged to help them look after the land went behind them to sell the land to Patience Ozokwo.

She said they only discovered this when her mother wanted to get treatment for her leg and found out that they could not sell the land.

The videos circulating show the woman standing on crutches and her leg turning black from the ailment.

Patience has now reacted with her side of the story. She said she bought the land in 2010 and recently discovered that the same people who sold the land to her are trying to take it from her.

She brought the middleman who brokered the sale of the land and got him to speak.

In a video shared by Patience Ozokwo, the middleman said the widow’s late husband was his kinsman, and after he died, the widow approached him, begging for help to sell the land so she could get medical treatment for her leg and also bury her late husband.

He said that when he could not get a willing buyer, he called Patience Ozokwo, who was abroad at the time, and asked if she was interested in buying land and the widow willingly sold to the actress, with him as the middleman.

Patience said what the widow and her daughter are doing is “blackmail, fraud, with malicious intent”. She then asked them to meet her in court.

Clad in all-white attire, Wontumi appeared in high spirits, smiling broadly and warmly exchanging pleasantries with party members.

In a brief address, he expressed gratitude to NPP supporters for their show of solidarity during his six-day detention.

Chairman Wontumi gave special thanks to NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, commending his leadership and support during the difficult period.

“I had to come and show how grateful I am. May God bless you. Everything will be fine,” Wontumi said.

During his detention, scores of NPP members, including the Minority in Parliament, stormed EOCO’s headquarters to protest the bail conditions, describing them as excessive and unreasonable.

Cedi at GH¢4 to $1 unrealistic, GH¢10-GH¢12 more sustainable – President Mahama

0

John Dramani Mahama is President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama is President of Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that projections suggesting the cedi could strengthen to GH¢4 to the dollar are unrealistic.

According to him, a fair and sustainable exchange rate lies between GH¢10 and GH¢12 to the dollar, a range he says better supports Ghanaian exporters.

Speaking at a meeting with the Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE), President Mahama acknowledged the recent strengthening of the local currency but cautioned that an overly strong cedi could harm the competitiveness of Ghana’s export sector.

“Some people say the cedi could fall to GH¢4, but we know the true value is not there. If it drops that low, it will kill all export businesses,” he stated.

He revealed that, following strategic consultations with the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, government experts had aligned on the GH¢10 to GH¢12 band as the cedi’s “real value.”

He added that recent developments, including the latest foreign exchange auction, had already pushed the exchange rate above GH¢10, signaling a return to a more stable currency environment.

President Mahama further encouraged exporters to take full advantage of the more favorable rate, adding that this environment should serve as a catalyst for expanding exports.

He said, “Cheaper fuel, lower port charges, and reduced raw material costs should drive production and improve competitiveness.”

The President’s remarks come amid increasing scrutiny of Ghana’s economic outlook and exchange rate dynamics, particularly as the country navigates post-COVID recovery efforts and continues structural reforms under international support programs.

Despite Automobile Museum: This is a big win for Ghana

Kalybos was impressed with the collection of cars at the museum Kalybos was impressed with the collection of cars at the museum

Popular Ghanaian actor Kalybos (real name Richard Asante) has praised Dr Osei Kwame Despite’s newly opened Automobile Museum as a landmark achievement for Ghana’s tourism and cultural heritage.

Speaking at the grand opening on June 1, 2025, the comedian-turned-actor described the museum’s collection of rare and antique cars as “something you’d only see in movies.”

The Despite Automobile Museum, located in East Legon, Accra, is Ghana’s first world-class car museum and only the third of its kind in Africa.

It features a curated mix of vintage classics and modern supercars, including a $3 million Bugatti Chiron, a 1971 Rolls-Royce Corniche (valued at $364,790), and a Tesla Cybertruck.

Kalybos, visibly impressed, told GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie, “Finding such rare cars in Ghana will boost tourism massively. I can boldly say this is one of the few collections you’ll find in Africa. For this to be achieved by our own Dr. Kwame Osei Despite is a big win for Ghana.”

The event was graced by high-profile figures, including Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and businessman Ibrahim Mahama, who lauded the museum as a fusion of “tradition, innovation, and excellence.”

The space also includes interactive simulators and educational exhibits, aiming to attract both car enthusiasts and families.

While the museum has drawn applause, some social media critics questioned its timing amid ongoing economic challenges. Others, however, defended it as a long-term investment in Ghana’s tourism appeal.

Kenyan activist speaks of ‘sexual torture’ in Tanzania

0

Boniface Mwangi (R) and Agather Atuhaire gave a harrowing account of their detention in Tanzania Boniface Mwangi (R) and Agather Atuhaire gave a harrowing account of their detention in Tanzania

Warning: This article contains details that some readers may find distressing.

A Kenyan activist has told the BBC that he is “struggling to be alive” after allegedly being sexually tortured in detention in Tanzania last month.

Boniface Mwangi said he had decided to speak despite the “shame and guilt of being sodomised with all manner of things”.

Mwangi said he was held in Tanzania after going to the country to show solidarity with detained opposition politician Tundu Lissu.

At a press conference in Kenya’s capital, Mwangi tearfully claimed that he was stripped naked, hung upside down, beaten on his feet and sexually assaulted while detained.

The police chief in Tanzania’s main city of Dar es Salaam disputed Mwangi’s account and told the BBC they were “opinions” and “hearsay” coming from activists.

“If they were here, I would engage them, I would ask them what are they saying, what do they mean… In law, those things are called hearsay or hearsay evidence,” Jumanne Muliro told the BBC.

He said Mwangi should make a report to the authorities for investigation.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government has been accused by rights groups of becoming increasingly repressive in the run-up to October’s presidential and parliamentary elections.

Regional rights groups have called for an investigation, and Amnesty International said Tanzanian authorities should hold to account those responsible for the “inhuman” treatment.

Mwangi said he was held by Tanzanian authorities for several days along with Ugandan activist Agather Atuhaire, who had earlier also spoken of being raped in detention.

She attended the press conference in Nairobi on Monday, where Mwangi described his sexual assault in graphic detail.

He said his torturers would sexually assault him and tell him to say “asante” (thank you in the Swahili language) to their president.

Mwangi added that the officers told him they were filming everything and would leak the footage if he spoke about what he had gone through.

Mwangi told the BBC Newsday programme that the torture had left him in mental anguish.

“You have a lot of nightmares, you have a lot of thoughts, and you’re alone in the dark, and you’re thinking you’re going to get killed. So that entire mental anguish lives with you,” he said.

Mwangi said he wanted his medical records be made public so that “what happened to me should never happen to anyone else”.

“I have wounds all over my body, I have wounds on my private parts, I have wounds on my feet, I have two broken toes, I have fractures… So I’m still struggling”.

Mwangi and Atuhaire were among several activists who travelled to Tanzania two weeks ago in solidarity with Lissu who was appearing in court on treason charges that he denies.

He has been demanding sweeping changes, saying current laws do not allow for free and fair polls, which the government denies.

Lissu was arrested on 9 April following his rallying call of “no reforms, no election”.

Mwangi told the BBC that their visit to Tanzania was to highlight Lissu’s “sham case”, adding that this “wasn’t taken lightly” by the authorities.

President Hassan warned at the time that she would not allow activists from neighbouring countries to “meddle” in Tanzania’s affairs.

The whereabouts of Mwangi and Atuhaire were unknown while they were being held, sparking widespread condemnation.

Mwangi said his “abduction” was shocking in how brazen it was as he had been “picked from a very prominent hotel”.

“So having been abducted during broad daylight and never knowing where I was, and I was still tortured, means that the Tanzanian government doesn’t care about what people think about it,” he told the BBC.

Earlier, Atuhaire said that despite Uganda being “very dictatorial”, she did not imagine she “would find a worse foreign country, a worse government”.

Mwangi said their experience showed “how broken” countries in East Africa were.

“So it makes me more of a pan-African in this fight,” he told the BBC.

The US Department of State’s Bureau of Africa Affairs previously said it was deeply concerned by the reports of the two activists’ mistreatment, noting that Atuhaire had been recognised by the department “in 2024 as an International Women of Courage Awardee”.

Other activists, including Kenya’s former Justice Minister Martha Karua and former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga were blocked from entering and were deported from the international airport in Dar es Salaam

Investigations turning into political retribution – Kwabena Agyapong

0

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Kwabena Agyapong has raised alarm over what he calls a growing culture of political retribution, following recent actions by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

This follows a ‘wanted’ notice reactivated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor for Ken Ofori-Atta.

At a press conference on Monday, June 2, Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng declared that the office had exhausted its patience with Ofori-Atta, citing what it described as persistent delays and failure to comply with ongoing criminal investigations.

“This office has always requested his attendance, and we have indicated clearly to him that we are unwilling to waive it. If we were amenable to taking any statement from Ken Ofori-Atta in absentia, we would have done so in February, and not waited till June 2, 2025.

“We want him here physically, and we insist on it. A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative body conducts its investigations and the methods suitable to him and his convenience. We will not countenance this conduct, not in this case.”

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Mr. Agyapong reacted to what he described as a ‘public’ prosecution of the former finance minister, saying that such actions blur the lines between legitimate prosecution and political persecution.

“What is happening is becoming a very dangerous cycle of retribution and vengeance, which makes it difficult for people to distinguish what is a proper course of investigation and political prosecution. It has got muddied,” he stated.

In his argument, he stated that with access to all state intelligence and prosecutorial tools, the OSP should focus on building a solid case rather than resorting to public declarations.

“The government has control of all the state security intelligence agencies. If you are building a case against someone, it should be easy with all these institutions available to the government and the attorney general to make the right decision.

“So, if the special prosecutor wants to prosecute someone, you are the prosecutor, and you build your case. After you are done and you believe in the evidence you have gathered, you proceed to court. You are not a judge to declare someone a fugitive, just because you cannot have access to the person,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Frank Davies, a member of the legal team representing former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, June 2, emphasised that Mr. Ofori-Atta is not evading justice but is currently unwell and undergoing medical treatment abroad.

“I want to understand that the Special Prosecutor knows what he is doing because the justice delivery system is not to be treated casually, especially when you are dealing with the fundamental human rights of a suspect or an accused person at this stage,” he said

ECG Tema Region Appreciates Stakeholders

0

Sakyiwaa Mensah

The Tema Region of Electricity Company of Ghana is appreciating its stakeholders for helping to keep them informed on various electricity distribution issues in the different operational areas of the Region.

The Tema Region operates with nine districts, namely Tema South, Tema North, Nungua, Ashaiman, Afienya, Juapong, Krobo, Ada and Prampram. For all these districts, Whatsapp group chats have been set up which includes Assembly Members, traditional leaders and other community leaders who share information on outages in their various communities.

Speaking on the positive impact being made by these platforms, the Public Relations Officer for the Region, Ms. Sakyiwaa Mensah said that “these platforms offer valuable support, in that, some take pictures of broken, tilted or weak (at the base) poles, they inform us of sagging lines and give us locations so we can attend to these”. She added that “some are in rural areas and bushes and the stakeholders share whatever problem they see, thereby enabling us to attend to the issues faster”.

The PRO who made these remarks during a media discussion added that “we constantly call on the general public to help us protect our network, as a lot of the things we work with are in the public space. These Whataspp groups and the information shared also mean that the stakeholders and community members have heard us and are helping us to keep our network in check”.

The PRO added that “there are indeed instances where customers will not have supply due to faults withing a small section of the distribution system and this especially makes us appreciate our stakeholders the more for the support and information sharing as we are able to sort out such problems”.

Ms. Mensah thanked the stakeholders for their continued support while urging them to “continue supporting our work and holding us accountable and informed on important issues relating to electricity distribution”.

By Kingsley Mamore

Ayerumu (O/R), June 3, GNA-Mr. Safo Nketia, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Krachi East, has engaged Kpachiri and Kalentine communities in Krachi East to address pressing local concerns.

During the meeting in Kpachiri, community members raised several issues, including lack of access to clean water, making it difficult for residents to access the essential resources.

The stakeholders in the community spoke about the school infrastructure and the poor conditions affecting the quality of education in the area.

They said teachers’ bungalows were damaged, which has affected teachers’ morale and the quality of education.

The community also lacks teaching staff, which is impacting the quality of education.

Mr Nketia, in his response, promised to collaborate with local authorities to tackle these problems through improved water supply, hiring more teachers, and repairing schools.

At Kalentine, community members raised similar issues affecting them, including better water services to access clean water.

Opinion leaders emphasized access to reliable telecommunications, making it difficult for residents to communicate with others.

The MCE reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the challenges and informed the community about government educational initiatives such as Adwumawura Program and the National Apprenticeship Scheme.

Similar exercise was carried out at Dambai market, where the MCE acknowledged the contributions of market traders to local development.

He assured them of ongoing support to improve their business conditions.

(L-R) A photo collage of Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, Chairman Wontumi and Gary Nimako (L-R) A photo collage of Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, Chairman Wontumi and Gary Nimako
