Half of December shows were free – Ruddy Kwakye

0

Ghanaian media executive and culture curator Ruddy Kwakye has said in a recent interview on Joy FM that many Ghanaian events don’t make gains because too many free tickets are given out.

Ruddy told Kwame Dadzie on Showbiz A-Z that several Ghanaian event organisers usually give out tickets for free just to fill up venues.

“You charge a 100,000 cedis to do a show in Ghana but the reality is you can’t sell 100,000 dollars’ worth of tickets. Half of your December shows by your favourite artistes were all free.
They just gave tickets to people to fill it up. It’s an ego trip. Because there is a system — if you market in a certain way, you would get your money back. But there is no shortcut around it, thinking we sold the tickets, therefore we should make profit,” he said.

He made this statement while discussing why many event organisers usually complain about making losses from their events after claiming they sold out their venues.

For playwright Latif Abubakar, making profit from events goes beyond just ticket sales. He said on the show that there are other avenues for raising funds to complement ticket income.

“I always say tickets are insignificant to the cost of a production. Because the amount of money we charge for ticketing is very small. You can’t depend on tickets to produce your events.
There are other elements of raising funds for production. We talk about sponsorships, partners, investors, and then you create other portfolios,” he said.

Latif noted that he creates a portfolio for exhibitions, where companies exhibit their wares and pay him.

For most event organisers, taxes imposed by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) also put a lot of pressure on their operations.

Ghana shuts down Embassy in Tehran; plans to evacuate nationals from Iran

0

The government of Ghana has commenced the emergency evacuation of nationals from Iran following heightened tensions and the conflict between Israel and Iran.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the decision via social media on Monday [June 16].

He described it as a proactive measure to protect Ghanaian lives. The evacuation order, he noted, affects all Ghanaian nationals in Iran — including diplomats, students, professionals, and other residents.

“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr Ablakwa indicated.

As part of the evacuation effort, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been shut down with immediate effect to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff. The operation is being carried out via Iran’s land borders, according to the minister.

Meanwhile, the government says it is monitoring developments in Israel closely. Although no evacuation order has been issued for Ghanaians living in Israel at this stage, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has ordered embassy operations in Tel Aviv to scale down to the barest minimum.

“All Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” Mr Ablakwa added.

The Mahama administration has also reiterated Ghana’s longstanding diplomatic position, calling for restraint and urging both Israel and Iran to pursue peaceful dialogue.

“The Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities,” the minister concluded.

Ghana is among the first African countries to initiate formal evacuation measures in response to the conflict, which has triggered international alarm over the possibility of a wider regional war.

Ahmed Abdula Crowned New Cruiserweight Champion

Ahmed Abdula

AHMED ABDULA is the new national cruiserweight champion after delivering a stunning performance to defeat Haruna Mohammed via unanimous decision at the Battle of the Beasts event on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

In front of a capacity crowd of over 5,000, Abdula produced a masterclass in power, speed, and precision, sealing scores of 97-92 across all judges’ cards.

The bout was part of a high-profile bill headlined by Amir Khan Promotions and Legacy Rise Sports, featuring Sharaf Mahama.

From the opening round, Abdula asserted himself as the aggressor, landing the cleaner shots and unsettling the defending champion. A ferocious right hook in the second round dislodged Mohammed’s mouth guard, foreshadowing the punishment to come.

As torrential rain soaked the arena and fans chanted “Hwie, Hwie, hwie gu yenso,” Abdula sent Mohammed to the canvas with a devastating hook. The challenger’s momentum only grew, dazzling the crowd—and boxing legend Azumah Nelson—with confident footwork and punishing combinations.

Despite flashes of resistance from Mohammed in rounds six and nine, Abdula remained dominant. He bloodied his opponent’s nose in the eighth and evaded multiple attacks with slick movement.

Frustration boiled over in Mohammed’s corner when his mouth guard repeatedly fell out in the final round, prompting visible anger from his coach, GBA Technical Director Ofori Asare.

When the final bell rang, the outcome was clear. Abdula had dismantled the champion in every department, earning a clean sweep on the scorecards: 97-92, 97-92, 97-92.

When asked about criticisms that some of these waste management investments—partly funded through mechanisms like the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA)—have not yielded the expected results, such as large-scale organic fertiliser production, Osei-Duah redirected the conversation toward oversight.

“If there are public funds pushed into this, again I will come back to supervision,” she stated. “If there are authorities manning every aspect of this country and if we have set up organizations… I’m a businessman, I may not even be an expert in the industry and I find business and I’m doing, somebody should put me in line and make sure that what is expected of me, the value for money, is given.”

Her remarks suggest that while Zoomlion has made major investments in infrastructure, their full potential depends on effective supervision and partnership with relevant state agencies.

Zoomlion’s willingness to participate in upcoming bids signals its determination to remain a key player in Ghana’s waste management sector, albeit under a new and more competitive procurement regime.

Justice Dzamefe supports proposal to increase justices on Supreme Court bench

Justice Senyo Dzamefe, a Court of Appeal judge nominated for appointment to the Supreme Court bench, has supported a proposal to increase the number of justices on the Supreme Court, arguing that the move would help clear a growing backlog of cases.

He made the remark during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday [June 16, 2025].

Justice Dzamefe was the first of seven nominees appearing before the vetting committee this week.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo currently on suspension pending an investigation into three petitions asking for her removal from office, in February 2024 had proposed in a letter to the President that the number of justices on the bench should be increased to 20 because of the workload, in effect, she was asking for the appointment of additional justices.

According to data cited by Justice Torkornoo, 12 judges handled 344 cases in the 2022/2023 legal year, leaving 1,648 cases pending.

“Our Supreme Court is overburdened with more than 400 cases each year, unlike the United States, where state courts help reduce the load,” Justice Dzamefe told parliament’s appointment committee when he appeared for vetting on Monday morning.

He said increasing the number of judges would speed up decisions on land, chieftaincy, and constitutional matters.

Responding to a question from Mr Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Justice Dzamefe also supported a proposal to extend Supreme Court sittings to Tamale in the northern part of Ghana to help lessen the burden on litigants in traveling to Accra.

He said the move would reduce travel costs for litigants in northern Ghana and make justice more accessible in towns such as Bawku and Bolgatanga.

On the issue of transparency, Justice Dzamefe confirmed that he had filed his asset declaration in response to a question from Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

“Judges must comply with the law as public officers,” he said.

John Mahama is the most prepared president in Ghana’s history – Gabby Otchere-Darko

New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has asserted that President John Dramani Mahama is the most prepared president in Ghana’s history.

Speaking in an interview on Asaase Radio on Monday, June 16, 2025, Gabby explained that Mahama’s extensive political journey, from assemblyman to president and back to power after a term in opposition, makes him uniquely experienced and equipped for leadership.

“I think the current president is probably the most prepared president we’ve had. From assemblyman all the way to where he is now, vice president, president, you’ve been in opposition, seen who your real friends are, learned from your mistakes, identified missed opportunities, and now you’ve been given another chance,” he said.

Otchere-Darko, however, noted that President Mahama faces a daunting task in fulfilling his campaign promises, particularly those made to the youth.

“The youth are unforgiving. They want jobs. They voted for you because they expect their aspirations to be met by your 24-hour economy policy and other promises. Satisfying them in this world of social media, new media, where every government action is overexposed and exaggerated, is a huge challenge,” he said.

He added, “But you must remember that your role is not to fulfill people’s aspirations directly, but to create the enabling environment for them to pursue those aspirations. If the government does that, creating space and opportunity, the youth must also put in the hard work to realise their goals.”

Gabby also encouraged Ghanaian youth to explore opportunities beyond the country, especially in other African nations.

UDS Calls On GFA After Historic Africa University Games Victory

UDS officials during their visit

OFFICIALS OF the University for Development Studies (UDS) have paid a courtesy call on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to celebrate their recent victory at the Africa University Games and seek support for the upcoming World University Games in China.

UDS made history by defeating Lagos State University 3–0 in the final, earning them the continental title and the honour of representing Africa on the global stage in September.

Led by Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Elliot Haruna Alhassan, the high-level UDS delegation included top officials from finance, sports, and public affairs. The team met with GFA Vice President Mark Addo, who stood in for President Kurt Okraku.

Prof. Alhassan highlighted UDS’s pride in flying Ghana’s flag and appealed for support ahead of their global challenge. “This is a proud moment for Ghana. We want to make the nation proud in China, and we need your help to do that,” he said.

Mark Addo congratulated UDS for their achievement and praised the discipline and talent of the team. He reaffirmed the GFA’s commitment to supporting football development within academic institutions.

“The GFA stands with you and will support your preparations for the World University Games,” he assured.

The visit underscored growing collaboration between academia and football leadership as Ghana positions itself for global success in university sports.

Judges must declare assets like all govt appointees – Justice Dzamefe

0

Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has called for equal accountability across all arms of government, insisting that judges, like other public officials, must declare their assets in accordance with the Constitution.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, June 16, Justice Dzamefe stressed that members of the judiciary should not be exempt from the constitutional requirement of asset declaration.

“If the law says all government appointees should declare their assets, and judges are government appointees, why not? They have to declare their assets,” he stated.

When asked whether he had complied with this requirement, Justice Dzamefe responded, “Yes, Mr. Chairman.”

His comments underscore the importance of transparency and accountability within the judiciary, amid growing public concerns about ethical standards and potential conflicts of interest involving holders of public office.

Justice Dzamefe’s stance aligns with calls from civil society organisations and legal reform advocates who have long demanded more openness in the judiciary as part of broader governance reforms.

His vetting forms part of a series of hearings for nominees to the Supreme Court, following recent appointments by President John Dramani Mahama.

Payment of nursing trainees’ allowances to be automatic – Mahama

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, June 16, GNA-President John Dramani Mahama has assured nursing trainees that the Government has put mechanisms in place to ensure that the payment of their monthly allowances will be done automatically.

He assured them that their allowances were being worked on by the Government and that by next month (July), they would start receiving their payments.

“We have designed it such that your payment will come automatically every month. Every month you will receive your money.” President Mahama stated in his address at a durbar of the chiefs and people of the North East Region at Nalerigu during his Thank You Tour of the Region.

“The budget was made from January and so when we start paying you next month, the arrears from January to June will be paid to you.”

The President is embarking on his on nationwide Thank You Tour to express gratitude to Ghanaians for their support for him and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the Decem 7, 2024, general election.

President Mahama announced that the Nalerigu College of Nursing and Midwifery was one of the colleges that had been selected for upgrading into a degree awarding institution.

He said education remained the nation’s greatest equalizer, adding that no region could prosper if its children were left behind.

He said the Gambaga College of Education remained a critical priority, and that following his directive, the GEDFUND Administrator had assessed the stalled projects on that campus, and he would confirm that funding was ready to complete the permanent site.

“We expect construction to resume in the third quarter of this year. The contractor will be on site at the Gambaga College of Education new site,” the President said.

Ghana loses billions to gold smuggling with most heading to Dubai – Report

0

Latest report by Swissaid has revealed that Ghana is losing billions of dollars in revenue annually due to rampant smuggling from its booming artisanal gold mining sector, with much of the illicit bullion ending up in the United Arab Emirates.

The report, released on June 11, 2025, uncovered a massive 229-metric ton trade gap valued at $11.4 billion between Ghana’s declared gold exports and the corresponding imports recorded by trading partners over a five-year period.

A significant portion of the undeclared gold was traced to Dubai, where it is believed to be entering informally via hand luggage and undeclared air cargo.

The head of the Sahel programme at Germany’s Konrad Adenauer Foundation who studies artisanal mining and regional insurgencies said, “This is just the tip of the iceberg. Hand-carried gold does not have to be declared in Dubai. Informal gold is mostly brought in on flights,” he stated.

The report detailed how smuggled gold often transits through Togo, Burkina Faso, and Mali, taking advantage of porous borders before reaching the UAE.

A senior official from Ghana’s Minerals Commission acknowledged the issue, describing the findings as a “notorious fact.”

Despite repeated concerns over revenue loss, Ghana’s finance ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

The report also highlighted the unintended consequences of a 3 percent withholding tax introduced by Ghana in 2019 to formalize and regulate artisanal gold exports.

Rather than improving transparency, the measure caused a collapse in declared exports and a sharp rise in smuggling.

In 2022, the government reduced the tax to 1.5 percent, prompting a modest recovery.

However in March 2024, the tax was entirely scrapped, a move the finance minister credited for a surge in official artisanal gold exports this year.

According to the report, an estimated 34 metric tons of Ghana’s 2023 gold output went undeclared roughly equivalent to the total amount of officially recorded artisanal production.

You can’t depend on ticket sales to produce your events – Latif Abubakar

0

Latif Abubakar is a popular Ghanaian playwright Latif Abubakar is a popular Ghanaian playwright

Renowned Ghanaian playwright Latif Abubakar has stated that ticket sales alone are not enough to sustain events.

He urged organisers to explore multiple revenue streams within their shows to stay afloat.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z on June 14, 2025, Abubakar explained that the price of tickets in Ghana is often too low to cover the high cost of event production.

“I always say tickets are insignificant to the cost of a production. The amount we charge for tickets is very small. You can’t depend on ticket sales to produce your events,” he said.

He advised organisers to seek alternative funding sources such as sponsorships, partnerships, and investor support, stressing the importance of building a diversified income strategy.

Latif also revealed that one of his strategies to generating revenue is by creating exhibition opportunities during his events, where companies can showcase their products or services for a fee, helping to offset costs.

“I create a portfolio of exhibitions where companies exhibit their wares and pay me,” he noted.

ECG uncovers massive power theft, illegal connection at Rehoboth Estate

ECG uncovers illegal connection at Rehoboth Estate in Kweiman ECG uncovers illegal connection at Rehoboth Estate in Kweiman

The revenue team of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)-Accra East Division, has uncovered widespread illegal electricity connections at Rehoboth Estate in Kweiman.

During an inspection of the estate, the team discovered that over 100 newly built homes had been connected to the electricity grid illegally.

Additionally, a block factory within the estate was found to be using an illegal connection to power its operations.

In a video shared by JoyNews on X (formerly Twitter), members of the ECG team were heard expressing their frustration, “They don’t have meters. These people are very wicked. There are cables on the floor. Almost everybody has an air conditioner in this estate.”

JoyNews further reported that, following the discovery of widespread power theft, the illegally connected block factory, used for supplying construction materials, was disconnected from the power supply.

In recent times, the ECG has raised concerns over the significant revenue losses incurred due to illegal electricity connections. Some of the most common forms of power theft identified include direct service connections, meter bypassing, meter tampering, and unauthorised service connections.

The company says it is intensifying efforts to crack down on such illegalities and ensure that offenders are brought to book.

Asante Kotoko’s dramatic triumph over Golden Kick SC in the 2025 MTN FA Cup Final has not only ended their eight-year title drought but also brought a financial windfall of GH¢180,000.

The Porcupine Warriors secured their 10th FA Cup title on Sunday, June 15, 2025, with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Division One underdogs Golden Kick at the University of Ghana Stadium.

The victory brings them just two titles shy of rivals Hearts of Oak’s record haul of 12.

Kwame Opoku was the hero of the day, scoring both goals for Kotoko. He opened the scoring with a powerful header before Bless Efe equalised for Golden Kick with a stunning free-kick.

But the game turned on a controversial late penalty, awarded by referee Latif Adaari, which Opoku calmly converted to seal the win and his brace.

Despite the controversy, Kotoko celebrated a long-awaited return to FA Cup glory, having last lifted the trophy in 2017.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Chairman of the FA Cup Committee Wilson Arthur revealed the financial rewards for the champions.

“The prize money for the MTN FA Cup is GH¢80,000, plus GH¢100,000 to prepare for the CAF Confederation Cup,” he disclosed.

‘Why are you doing this?’ – Nana B chides Dr Ayine over ORAL public briefings

Henry Nana Boakye, NPP organiser and Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, Attorney General and Minister of J Henry Nana Boakye, NPP organiser and Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, Attorney General and Minister of J

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has criticised the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, over briefings on Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).

Reacting to the briefing which took place on June 13, 2025, he said the press conferences which indict government appointees in alleged corruption cases during their tenure in office is unfair.

“This is unfair to the former appointees cited for various offenses. Why is he doing this? He is an experienced lawyer. He is my senior by many years and a lecturer. So, I expect him to know better,” he indicated.

He argued that the actions of the Attorney General’s Department give room for public trials even before the person has the chance to defend themselves before a court of competent jurisdiction.

“He knows that a person is innocent until proven guilty by the precepts of the law. Ideally, he must refer these cases directly to the court instead of the ongoing media trial,” he said during an interview on Okay FM on June 16, 2025.

He lamented that the modus operandi taken by the Attorney General’s Department and called for a rethink of the handling of public prosecution of former appointees.

Meanwhile, former Director-General of National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, is standing trial with his wife and other accomplices in connection with an alleged financial scandal involving a $7 million cyber defense system contract.

Also, Former Deputy Executive Director Gifty Oware-Mensah has been named in the National Service Authority’s (NSA) ghost names payroll scandal.

Minority urges Supreme Court nominees to be guardians of fundamental laws, not instrument of executive convenience

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah

Accra, June 16, GNA-The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus has urged Justices nominated to the Supreme Court to be guardians of the fundamental law and not become instruments of Executive convenience.

Delivering an address before the vetting of Justice Senyo Dzamefe, a nominee to the Supreme Court by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, stated that the authority of the Supreme Court was derived from moral standing, and not political alignment.

Noting that true judiciary independence required constitutional courage, deciding cases on law and precedent and not political preferences, he added.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, Ranking Member on the Appointments Committee, underscored the need for Supreme Court Judges to protect minority rights against majoritarian excesses.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, also the NPP legislator for Effutu constituency, criticised the ruling government for double standards by opposing the nomination of two Justices to the Supreme Court by the previous NPP government.

“This government’s double standards are staggering. The NDC vehemently opposed the nominations of Justice Sophia Banasco and Professor Richard Oppong’s nomination under President Akufo-Addo, crying that the court is over bloated, now the President presents seven nominees simultaneously,” he said.

President John Mahama nominated seven justices who are currently serving on the Court of Appeals bench to the Supreme Court earlier this year.

The nominees are Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Adzua Bartels-Kodwo, Justice Hafisata Amaleboba, and Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo.

The President’s nomination is based on Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the President to appoint Justices of the Supreme Court in consultation with the Council of State and with the approval of Parliament.

Court Timelines: 3 months for criminal, 6 for civil cases

0

Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has proposed a series of sweeping reforms aimed at improving the efficiency of Ghana’s judicial system, including the introduction of fixed timelines for completing court cases.

Justice Dzamefe’s proposals come amid growing public frustration over the slow pace of court proceedings, with some cases dragging on for several years.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, June 16, for his vetting, Justice Dzamefe emphasized the urgent need to address delays in the adjudication of cases, particularly criminal matters.

“I also think we must set timelines for cases — so let’s say, criminal cases three months, and civil for six months. There should be time limits; no criminal case should go beyond 3 months, no civil case should go beyond a certain period of time,” he suggested.

He stressed that implementing fixed durations for case resolution would help restore public confidence and ensure timely justice delivery.

He further called for investment in both infrastructure and human capital within the judiciary, noting that no reform could be successful without prioritizing the welfare and capacity of judicial staff.

“Anybody who wants to maximise productivity must first think of the human resource, because it’s a mistake a lot of people make. First, think of people who will give you the product,” he advocated.

Addressing infrastructural needs, Justice Dzamefe advocated for the establishment of more courts to reduce caseload pressure on existing facilities.

“We need more courts so that the job will be spread thin, and it will go faster,” he noted.

He also highlighted the critical role of technology in modernizing court operations. He called for the adoption of artificial intelligence, voice recording, transcription tools, and virtual courtrooms to replace outdated manual systems.

“We must go with technology. The time of long handwriting is long gone past,” he asserted. “By the end of the day, once the court is done sitting, the records are ready. We also need to go virtual, so people can testify online. We must be abreast with time, otherwise we will be left out,” he said.

His Death Broke My Heart, He Wasn’t Perfect But Loved Me, I Learnt Comedy From My Daddy—Broda Shaggi

0

Renowned Nigerian comedian, actor, and singer, Samuel Animashaun Perry, popularly known as Broda Shaggi, has opened up about the deep emotional scars left by the death of his father. In a heartfelt post shared on his official Instagram page to mark Father’s Day, the entertainer reflected on the profound influence his father had on his life and career, especially in shaping his comedic talent.

Broda Shaggi described his father’s passing as his “first real heartbreak,” revealing that the loss hit him so hard that he chose not to speak about it for years. He admitted to burying those memories as a way of surviving the pain. “His death broke my heart,” he wrote. “He wasn’t perfect, but he loved me deeply. I stopped talking about him because it hurt too much, and I felt I had to move on and live my own life.”

The comedian went on to describe his father not just as a parent but as his first teacher in the art of performance. According to him, his father—who was also a teacher—often engaged in dramatic expressions and humor, traits that heavily influenced Broda Shaggi’s passion for acting and comedy.

“I learnt comedy from my daddy,” he stated. “He made people laugh, and I guess that’s where I got it from. I only wish he lived to see what I’ve become.”

The emotional tribute has resonated with fans across social media, with many praising the comedian for his openness and vulnerability. It serves as a reminder that behind the laughter and fame lies a personal story of pain, love, and inspiration.

Mahama and NDC hypocrisy exposed by Israel-Iran Conflict – Ntim Fordjour

0

Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has launched a scathing attack on former President John Mahama and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of hypocrisy and policy inconsistency over the recently suspended Dumsor Levy.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, 16 June, the MP questioned the rationale behind the hasty passage and abrupt suspension of the levy.

“The nuisance Dumsor Levy has backfired!” Rev. Ntim Fordjour wrote. “Suspending it after passing it at midnight while Ghana slept speaks volumes of their incompetence.”

His remarks come in the wake of the Ghana Revenue Authority’s decision to suspend the implementation of the Energy Sector Recovery Levy, popularly referred to as the “Dumsor Levy”, which was scheduled to take effect the same day.

According to the Assin South legislator, the government’s cited justification for the suspension—fears of economic fallout from the ongoing Israel-Iran tensions—mirrors the global pressures Ghana faced during the Russia-Ukraine war, a situation he said the NDC downplayed while in opposition.

“Now they fear that the Israel-Iran feud can devastate our economy. Was the Russia-Ukraine conflict any different? Mahama and NDC hypocrisy exposed!” he added.

The levy, which was passed under a certificate of urgency to help clear debts in the energy sector, was widely criticised by the public and opposition groups as punitive.

While the government claimed it was necessary to stabilise electricity supply and prevent further power crises, critics, including Rev. Ntim Fordjour, argue that its midnight approval and sudden halt betray poor planning and a lack of genuine concern for the suffering of Ghanaians.

‘There is nothing procedurally questionable’ – Majority Leader defends CJ Torkornoo’s suspension

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has defended the constitutional and procedural processes followed in the suspension of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking during the vetting of Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe on Monday, June 16, 2025, he questioned why the matter was being raised during the vetting session.

“First and foremost, I think this is not the proper platform to be questioning the processes involving Justice Torkornoo. I think it is inappropriate,” he said.

He emphasised that the 1992 Constitution clearly outlines the procedures for addressing such matters.

“Let me just indicate that there is nothing procedurally questionable about the processes Justice Torkornoo is being taken through. The Constitution is clear on what the process is, and that process has been followed diligently. Efforts to challenge it at the Supreme Court have not been successful. Therefore, I find it inappropriate that, before a committee of this nature, the Minority Leader would be questioning the process, especially in relation to the accusations,” he stated.

Following the determination of a prima facie case in the three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended her and established a five-member committee to inquire into the petitions.

In the interim, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, a Justice of the Supreme Court, has assumed the role of acting Chief Justice.

His appointment as acting Chief Justice is in line with Article 144(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which stipulates that the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court shall act as Chief Justice if the position becomes vacant or the substantive Chief Justice is unable to perform his or her duties.

ASEC urges government to scrap GH¢1 fuel levy amid global oil volatility

0

Ing. Justice Ohene-Akoto, Executive Director of Africa Sustainable Energy Centre Ing. Justice Ohene-Akoto, Executive Director of Africa Sustainable Energy Centre

The Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC) has renewed its opposition to the government’s proposed GH¢1 fuel levy, warning that recent developments in the global oil market highlight the risks of anchoring fiscal policy on temporary market conditions.

ASEC argues that the proposed levy, whose implementation has since been suspended, is ill-timed and unsustainable, particularly given the volatile nature of global energy prices.

The think tank first raised concerns earlier this year, contending that introducing the levy during a period of marginal fuel price decline, largely driven by the cedi’s appreciation, was both premature and ill-advised.

“Short-term price dips must not form the basis for permanent tax policies,” ASEC stated.

It noted that global oil prices have since climbed to US$74–US$75 per barrel, driven largely by geopolitical tensions. This, the Centre argues, underscores the risks associated with the proposed levy, which could quickly become counterproductive as external shocks reverse any perceived consumer relief.

ASEC’s latest analysis suggests that fuel prices at the pump are likely to rise in the coming weeks, with any current reductions expected to be short-lived. If the levy is implemented, it warns, prices could approach GH¢15 per litre by July, further straining household and business budgets.

“Government goodwill earned from recent economic stabilisation efforts risks being eroded by growing public discontent,” ASEC cautioned.

The Centre called for a more strategic, long-term policy direction focused on structural reforms, sustainable investments, and diversified revenue streams within the energy sector, rather than shifting the burden onto consumers.

“The GH¢1 fuel levy should be scrapped entirely. In an era of global uncertainty, policy decisions must be flexible, data-driven, and prioritise the welfare of citizens,” the statement concluded.

I’m an Arsenal fan, but Partey should move on and make good money’ – Gabby Otchere-Darko

Thomas Partey is Arsenal's midfielder Thomas Partey is Arsenal’s midfielder

Renowned Ghanaian lawyer Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has urged Thomas Partey to consider leaving Arsenal this summer in pursuit of a financially rewarding move as his contract nears expiration.

Speaking in an interview with Asaase Radio, Otchere-Darko, a known Arsenal fan, made a passionate case for Partey to prioritise his long-term welfare over sentiment.

“I’m an Arsenal fan, but I advise Thomas Partey to move elsewhere and make some good money for his pension years,” he said.

His comments come at a pivotal time for the 31-year-old Ghanaian midfielder, whose current deal with the Gunners ends on June 30, 2025.

Despite Partey’s increased availability and consistent performances last season, his future in North London remains uncertain, with contract extension talks still ongoing.

Partey joined Arsenal in 2020 from Atlético Madrid in a €50 million deal and has since played a key role in midfield when fit.

Injuries have intermittently disrupted his time in the Premier League, but in the just-ended season, he managed 52 appearances across all competitions, his highest tally in an Arsenal shirt, scoring four goals and assisting three.

While the Gunners included Partey in a list of players whose contracts are expiring at the end of the month, they confirmed on their official website that discussions are ongoing regarding a potential renewal.

Still, Gabby Otchere-Darko’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among some fans and observers who believe Partey could capitalise on interest from abroad, particularly in leagues like Saudi Arabia or Qatar, where lucrative final contracts are common for players in their 30s.

Partey has remained tight-lipped about his next move, stating recently that he has left the decision to his representatives and is focused on enjoying his football.

Uganda leader signs new law allowing military trials for civilians

0

Uganda's President signed a law allowing civilians to be tried in military courts Uganda’s President signed a law allowing civilians to be tried in military courts

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has signed into law an amendment that will allow, once again, civilians to be tried in a military court under certain circumstances.

A previous law permitting such trials was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in January.

Before that ruling, civilians could be taken to a military tribunal if they had been found with military equipment like guns or army uniforms. Activists had complained that the law was used to persecute government critics.

Parliamentarians passed the amendment last month amid a heavy police presence and a boycott by opposition lawmakers, who argued that it violated the ruling by the country’s highest court.

In January, the judges said that the military courts were neither impartial nor competent to exercise judicial functions, the International Society for Human Rights reported at the time.

The amendment appears to try and address some of the issues.

It says that those presiding over the tribunals should have relevant legal qualifications and training. It also says that while performing their legal functions they should be independent and impartial.

For years, activists had argued that the military courts were being used by the government to silence opponents.

A recent high-profile case followed November’s arrest of long-time opposition leader Kizza Besigye. He was picked up in neighbouring Kenya, taken across the border and then charged in a military court with possession of pistols and attempting to purchase weapons abroad, which he denied.

Those charges were dropped when his case was transferred to a civilian court following the Supreme Court ruling.

Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, previously defended the use of military courts saying that they dealt with the “rampant activities of criminals and terrorists that were using guns to kill people indiscriminately”.

He said that civilian courts were too busy to “handle these gun-wielding criminals quickly”.

“Politics Is Not a License to Make Money” – Ibrahim Adjei Condemns Corruption in NSA Payroll Fraud

0

According to a report by Citinewsroom, Ibrahim Adjei, former Assistant Secretary at the Office of the Former President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has emphasized the need for accountability in governance, insisting that political loyalty should not shield individuals involved in corruption, particularly in cases affecting state resources.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on June 16, Adjei urged Ghanaians to prioritize the nation’s welfare over partisan interests, following recent revelations by the Attorney General regarding a GH¢30 million payroll fraud at the National Service Authority (NSA).

According to him, “Do not defend wrongdoing if it is against the interest of Ghana. Let the law work.”

The Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, disclosed during a press briefing on June 13 that Gifty Oware-Mensah, former Deputy Executive Director of the NSA, allegedly orchestrated the fraud.

She reportedly manipulated the National Service Personnel (NSP) allowance system, securing a GH¢30,698,218.69 loan from the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) using the allowances as collateral, with an interest rate of 23%.

The investigation, led by the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) task force, continues to probe financial malfeasance at the NSA. Adjei stressed that protecting political allies involved in such acts compromises the nation’s development and governance credibility.

He remarked, “It sets a benchmark and will deter those who think that getting into politics is a license to make money.”

He further called on citizens to support the ongoing investigations objectively, avoiding any form of politicization that could undermine justice and accountability efforts.

‘I’m disgusted by how Ofori-Atta has been treated unfairly’ – Gabby

L-R: Ken Ofori-Atta and Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko L-R: Ken Ofori-Atta and Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Chairman of Asaase Broadcasting, has expressed strong disapproval of the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s handling of former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to him, he is appalled by the treatment of the former minister, especially given his current health conditions.

Speaking in an interview on Asaase Radio on Monday, June 16, 2025, Otchere-Darko said, “I’m disgusted about how Ken Ofori-Atta has been treated. I’m disgusted. He’s doing well and I think he’s on an intensive recovery for the next couple of weeks at least. It [medical treatment] went well and we thank God for that.”

Sharing his personal experience with Ofori-Atta, Gabby eulogised him, stating that the former minister, who is currently being pursued by the OSP, an anti-corruption agency, entered politics to selflessly serve in the nation’s interest rather than for personal gain.

He supported his claim by referencing the country’s economic growth and progress during Ofori-Atta’s first four years as Minister of Finance under the previous government.

He also criticised the citizenry, accusing them of unfairly blaming Ofori-Atta for the country’s economic woes.

He argued that the economic challenges were not the former appointee’s fault, emphasising his achievements during his first four years in office.

“The Ken Ofori-Atta that I know came to politics not for personal gain. He came to politics because he believed he could serve. And we saw what happened in the first four years that he was finance minister.

“We saw what happened, especially after 2021. When I hear the conversation about what the country went through, I think we’ve been unfair to him. And I will say this for a fact because, yes, for the first four years we saw the work that he did,” he added.

The OSP has declared the former minister a wanted fugitive after he failed to comply with a directive to appear before the agency.

CLOGSAG orders staff to strike over alleged misconduct by Births and Deaths Registrar

0

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), has directed all staff of the Births and Deaths Registry nationwide to stay at home starting Tuesday, June 17, 2025, citing an increasingly hostile work environment under the Acting Registrar, Mr. Samuel Adom Botchway.

In a letter dated June 12, 2025, addressed to the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, and copied to key government offices including the Office of the Head of Civil Service (OHCS) and the Office of the Head of Local Government Service (OHLGS), CLOGSAG alleged continued misconduct by Mr. Botchway despite earlier petitions and negotiations aimed at resolving the leadership crisis at the Registry.

According to CLOGSAG, Mr. Botchway has been “acting irresponsibly” by unilaterally posting and reassigning staff across the Civil and Local Government Services without proper authority.

The letter also accuses him of verbally assaulting staff and creating what the Association describes as an “uncongenial atmosphere” at the workplace through constant threats.

“These actions have rendered the working environment unsafe and intolerable,” the Association said in the statement signed by Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo.

The move follows a previous nationwide strike in March 2025 over the same leadership concerns. That strike was suspended after the Ministry of Labour intervened and assured continued dialogue to resolve the matter. However, CLOGSAG says there has been little progress since then.

At an emergency meeting held on June 12, 2025, the Association’s National Executive Council (NEC) resolved that all staff under the Registry should remain at home until a “safe and congenial working environment” is assured.

The strike action is likely to disrupt key public services such as the issuance of birth and death certificates across the country.

“External Factors Can’t Be Excuses” — Ghanaians Slam Mahama Over Israel-Iran Conflict Comment

0

Some Ghanaians have taken to social media platform X to challenge President John Dramani Mahama’s recent comments on the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict and the potential impact on Ghana’s fuel prices as reported by Ghana Web.

During his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Savannah Region on June 14, 2025, President Mahama raised concerns about the ripple effects of the escalating tensions in the Middle East.

He explained that rising crude oil prices, triggered by the exchange of missile strikes between Iran and Israel, could undermine Ghana’s progress in stabilising petroleum product prices.

“Despite the work we have done in stabilising the economy, Ghana is not immune to the shocks of global events,” he remarked.

To address the looming threat, Mahama disclosed that he had tasked the Finance and Energy Ministers to monitor the situation closely and devise strategies to protect the recent gains achieved in fuel price reductions.

However, his remarks sparked mixed reactions among Ghanaians online.

Critics argued that Mahama’s current stance appears contradictory, pointing out that while in opposition, he criticised the Akufo-Addo government for blaming external factors, such as the Russia-Ukraine war, for Ghana’s economic woes.

They questioned why he now acknowledges global events as influencing domestic fuel prices.

Conversely, some supporters defended Mahama, asserting that his statements were not an attempt to shift blame but rather a realistic acknowledgment of potential external pressures on Ghana’s economy.

They argued that his call for proactive measures demonstrated responsible leadership in anticipating global market fluctuations.

Stop the political interference; EC must complete its work in Ablekuma North

0

Jones de Graft-Darkwa is a Research & Elections Officer at Ablekuma North Constituency Jones de Graft-Darkwa is a Research & Elections Officer at Ablekuma North Constituency

In recent days, Ghanaians have witnessed a troubling and unjustified attack on the independence of the Electoral Commission (EC), led by senior government officials, including the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Presidential Advisor for Governmental Affairs, Dr. Valerie Esther Sawyer. These officials have publicly called for a rerun of the parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

Let me state emphatically that any talk of a rerun in Ablekuma North, whether for the entire constituency or select polling stations, is completely without justification or constitutional basis.

The EC is the only institution empowered by our Constitution to organize and supervise elections in Ghana. It is an independent body. The recent comments from these high-ranking officials not only undermine that independence but also risk setting a dangerous precedent in which political pressure overrides the law and due process.

The EC has consistently stated that it is ready and willing to execute its constitutional mandate by completing the collation and declaration of the 7 December 2024 parliamentary election results for Ablekuma North. The only impediment has been the lack of adequate security support from the Ghana Police Service. It is, therefore, deeply troubling for anyone, especially government officials, to be calling for a rerun when the lawful process has not been concluded simply due to an apparent failure, or refusal, to guarantee the Commission the security it needs to operate.

Ironically, any rerun (should one occur), would require even greater security arrangements. So why are these calls being made at all? The solution is clear: provide the EC with the protection it needs to do its job and respect the will of the people.

The constituents of Ablekuma North have exercised their constitutional right to vote. The ballots have been cast, and the democratic process must be allowed to conclude. It is not for politicians, regardless of their office, to decide whether an election should be rerun. That authority lies solely with the EC, and only under specific, well-grounded legal circumstances.

Rather than undermine the process with partisan pronouncements, officials like Dr. Omane Boamah and Dr. Valerie Sawyer should be using their influence to support the EC and urge the Inspector General of Police and the Ghana Police Service to ensure the Commission has the protection it needs to carry out its constitutional duties.

This moment calls for leadership, not political gamesmanship. The EC must be allowed to assert its independence, complete the collation process, and declare the results without further delay. Anything less is a betrayal of our democracy.

It is time to end the charade and put Ghana first.

Global conflict poses risk to Ghana’s economy

Collins Adomako-Mensah is the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament's Energy Committee Collins Adomako-Mensah is the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee

Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has warned that Ghana’s economy could face significant challenges if the conflict between Israel and Iran escalates.

He stated that the country’s heavy reliance on imported petroleum products makes it particularly vulnerable to external shocks, potentially triggering fuel price hikes and broader inflationary pressures.

Speaking on Channel One TV on June 16, 2025, Adomako-Mensah highlighted the potential economic implications of the Israel-Iran conflict on Ghana, emphasising the risks tied to the country’s energy dependency.

He noted that the conflict had already begun to disrupt international travel.

“Just yesterday, because of this, there were major disruptions to international travel. These are two oil-producing countries, and the conflict is definitely going to impact global oil prices,” he said.

Adomako-Mensah cautioned that prolonged hostilities between Israel and Iran would place increasing strain on Ghana’s economy, and he advocated for urgent diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.

Residents stranded due to incomplete drainage system in Ablekuma Fanmilk

0

Residents of Ablekuma Fanmilk are voicing frustration over an incomplete drainage system Residents of Ablekuma Fanmilk are voicing frustration over an incomplete drainage system

Residents of Ablekuma Fanmilk are voicing frustration over an incomplete drainage system that has left them cut off and inconvenienced.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com dated June 16, 2025, the issue affects the 10 Plots area in Ablekuma Fanmilk, part of the Ga Central Municipal Assembly.

A drainage system constructed along a key community road is obstructing access to residents’ homes.

Residents say this problem has persisted for nearly a decade, despite numerous complaints from affected households.

Originally intended to address flooding, the project has been ongoing for several months.

However, its incomplete state has brought significant hardship to the community. Instead of improving infrastructure, it has become a major source of disruption.

The drainage system, left unfinished, continues to worsen flooding in the area. A deep, open gutter now cuts across the road, separating homes from the main access route.

They lament that the situation deteriorates further during the rainy season, when the inadequate drainage fails to manage water runoff.

Additionally, residents say they are often forced to wade through flooded streets, as vehicles, including cars and motorbikes, are unable to reach the area. Many are compelled to walk long distances or risk dangerous crossings just to access their homes.

The community is therefore urgently appealing to the authorities to complete the project.

“This area floods frequently during the rainy season, and we lose clients as a result. It’s very difficult to attract new customers under these conditions,” a resident lamented.

Parents in the community are also deeply concerned about the safety of schoolchildren.

“I want the road to be fixed. There are schools nearby, and when it rains, I often have to keep my children at home because the gutter becomes dangerous. If a child were to fall in, it could be disastrous. I stand watch during the rains just to keep them safe,” one worried resident shared.

Despite repeated appeals to local authorities, the issue remains unresolved.

“We’ve consulted the assemblyman and other officials, but they always say action will be taken. When it rains, erosion is severe, and if you’re not careful, you could be swept away,” another resident said.

Assemblyman Efritete Baffoe Kyei, who represents the Ablekuma Electoral Area, has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation.

“This has been a major challenge for us. Last year, I spoke with the Roads Engineer, Mr. Armah, who said the project had been earmarked for a contractor to build a proper drain. I followed up in March this year, and he told me that due to changes in government, we would have to be patient,” he explained.

He stressed the urgent need for proper drainage infrastructure and assured residents that discussions with the Municipal Engineer are ongoing.

New date for fuel levy will be announced when indicators are favorable

Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has noted that a new date for the implementation of the Dumsor Levy will be communicated once tensions between Israel and Iran subside.

According to the Spokesperson and Head of Communications for the ministry, Richmond Rockson, the ministry is monitoring developments on the global market to ensure that the gains made in the oil sector this year are not lost.

He explained, “In fact, over the past three days, if you check crude oil prices on the international market, they have risen from $60 to $74. This is the highest we’ve seen in the past five months. This increase has also caused some disruptions in our pricing model.

“The President has directed the Ministers of Energy and Finance to continue monitoring the situation. So they will keep monitoring it, and once the conditions become favourable, a new date will definitely be announced,” he added.

The ministry confirmed that the postponement of the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141), was influenced by escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, which have impacted global oil prices.

“I can confirm that the Government of Ghana, as announced by the GRA, has postponed the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141). This levy introduced GH¢1 on petrol, GH¢1 on diesel, and 20 pesewas on gas. So yes, I can give you that confirmation,” Rockson was quoted by Citi Newsroom.

He noted that the President is committed to safeguarding the gains made from falling oil prices this year and to shielding consumers from additional burdens.

Rockson further stated that since June 13, oil prices have surged on the global market due to rising geopolitical tensions, influencing the government’s decision to delay the levy’s implementation.

“From February to date, we have experienced a windfall in the fuel market, thanks to the prudent management of exchange rates, which has reduced fuel prices from an average of GH¢17 to GH¢11 or GH¢12, depending on which Oil Marketing Company (OMC) you buy from,” he said.

Olanrewaju Gabriel’s body set to arrive in Nigeria on June 17

Olanrewaju Gabriel Oluwasegun collapsed during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena Olanrewaju Gabriel Oluwasegun collapsed during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena

The remains of late Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju Gabriel Oluwasegun, popularly known as “Success,” will arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, nearly three months after his tragic death in Ghana.

The body is expected to arrive at approximately 4:00 PM WAT and will be transported directly to the Honda Playing Ground in Otta, Ogun State.

There, a series of ceremonies will be held in his honour, including a boxing demonstration by members of the Nigerian boxing community and a candlelight vigil that will continue through the night. He will be laid to rest the following day.

The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) confirmed the arrangements in a letter dated June 10, 2025, addressed to the President of the Ghana Boxing Authority.

Signed by NBBofC president Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, the letter stated that the repatriation had been finalised after talks involving the General Secretary Remi Aboderin and Ghanaian boxing officials.

“Based on your call and discussion with my good self Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, and the General Secretary Hon. Remi Aboderin, we have informed the above deceased boxer’s family and have agreed to receive his remains (corpse) on Tuesday, 17th of June 2025,” the letter read.

The NBBofC stated that the timing was intended to give the family enough room to prepare, and that the body would proceed directly to burial, with no need for additional mortuary services.

The board also requested that the remains be returned in a casket, rather than a body bag, and urged Ghanaian authorities to provide the boxer’s fight purse and compensation for the loss.

Olanrewaju collapsed during a light-heavyweight bout with Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu on March 29, 2025, during Fight Night 15 at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

He was later pronounced dead at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. His sudden death shocked the Nigerian boxing community and triggered widespread calls for a review of safety standards in Ghanaian boxing.

The repatriation process was delayed due to legal and diplomatic procedures, including the need for a coroner’s report.

“The Court Said the Judge Should Recuse Himself, But the Contempt Still Holds” — NDC Fires Back

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected claims by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the contempt case involving Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi has been fully resolved as reported by ModernGhana.

According to the NDC, the case is still active despite the recent Supreme Court ruling.

The Supreme Court overturned an earlier contempt conviction issued by High Court Judge Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe and ordered his recusal. However, the NDC maintains that the charges remain.

Eastern Regional Secretary of the NDC, Jamal Konneh, criticized the NPP for misleading the public, stating that the Supreme Court ruling only addressed procedural issues, not the substance of the case.

Konneh explained that while the NPP sought multiple reliefs at the Supreme Court, including a request to dismiss the election petition for being filed without a gazette, the court unanimously dismissed that argument.

“The NPP filed about five reliefs at the Supreme Court. The first one was that the court should set aside the petition, arguing that the petitioners filed it without a gazette.

That was dismissed by a unanimous 5-0 decision of the court,” Konneh said.

He further emphasized that the ruling focused on judicial bias, not the contempt charge itself. “What was upheld was the fact that the judge sitting on the case should recuse himself. But the contempt case still holds,” he added.

The Supreme Court directed that a new judge be assigned to continue the contempt proceedings.

Despite the NPP’s public celebrations, Konneh stressed that both the contempt case and the broader election petition remain pending.

AG’s briefings needless – Elvis Darko

0

Editor of NewsCenta, Elvis Darko, has criticised Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, for publicly commenting on the alleged payroll fraud at the National Service Authority (NSA), describing the move as “unnecessary” and potentially prejudicial.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, June 16, Darko expressed concern about Dr. Ayine’s remarks at a press conference held on Friday, June 13 arguing that such public pronouncements undermine the judicial process.

“I think the Attorney General should be mindful of his words. If it’s suspicion that you are investigating, that’s correct. But if you make a pronouncement that it is a criminal enterprise, it means you have already determined the fate of the case,” he said.

He added, “That pronouncement does not lie in the mouth of the Attorney General but rather the court. I think the Attorney General is being carried away by the public support and party support.”

His comments come in the wake of a June 13 press briefing in which the Attorney General disclosed alleged payroll fraud amounting to GH¢548 million and named 12 former NSA officials, including high-profile figures such as Mustapha Ussif, Osei Assibey Antwi, and Gifty Oware-Mensah.

But Darko questioned the timing and necessity of the press conference, warning that it could prejudice public opinion and the outcome of ongoing investigations.

“This public conference by the Attorney General, if you ask me, is needless. We need the pronouncement to be made by the court, then we can work with it.”

While emphasising the need for accountability, he stressed that due legal processes must be followed.

“I do not have sympathy for someone who steals public money. The state must deal with them. But the appropriate medium is to carry the case to court,” he added.

24yr Beautiful Cecilia Killed By Her Boyfriend For Ritual Purposes

News Hub Creator3h

A horrifying event has emerged from Cape Coast in Ghana’s Central Region, where Cecilia, a level 300 student studying marketing at Cape Coast Technical University, was brutally killed in what authorities suspect was a ritual murder. Her body was discovered at Ola Estate with severe mutilation to her private parts. Her boyfriend, Nicholas Ato Bronk Taylor, a physically attractive construction worker known for his skills in 3D design and Italian graphic artistry, was arrested after police investigations pointed to him. He allegedly confessed to the crime and was charged with murder. He was remanded and is expected to appear again in court.

Speaking anonymously with a news outlet, Cecilia’s sister revealed harrowing details about the victim’s brief romance with Taylor, which had only lasted three weeks. She noted that Cecilia had grown increasingly uncomfortable with Taylor’s possessive and emotionally manipulative behavior. A few days before her death, Cecilia had tried to cut ties with him, a move her sister believes provoked the fatal incident. She said Taylor often used the language of love to disguise his controlling actions and ultimately convinced Cecilia to visit him one last time, which turned out to be a trap.

The Central Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service confirmed Taylor’s confession, stating he had killed Cecilia for ritualistic purposes, believing it would bring him wealth. Police at the crime scene recovered a knife and various objects linked to occult practices, reinforcing suspicions that the murder was part of a planned ritual sacrifice.

Ghana begins immediate evacuation of citizens from Iran amid escalating Israel-Iran tensions

0

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, June 16, GNA – The Government of Ghana has commenced the urgent evacuation of its nationals from the Islamic Republic of Iran following the intensification of hostilities between Iran and Israel.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described the decision to evacuate Ghanaians as a measure to safeguard lives amid growing instability.

“The Mahama Administration, in the interest of protecting Ghanaian lives, has decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” he said.

As part of the emergency response, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff.

The evacuation, being carried out via Iran’s land borders, includes all categories of Ghanaian nationals —diplomats, students, professionals, and others residing in the country.

The Ministry further indicated that it was closely monitoring the unfolding situation in Israel and will soon provide an update on Ghana’s next steps.

In the meantime, operations at Ghana’s embassy in Tel Aviv have been scaled down significantly.

Mr Ablakwa added, “We have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department.”

The Government assured the public that every effort is being made to protect Ghanaian lives and keep citizens safe amid the crisis.

On June 13, 2025, Israel launched a major preemptive military operation, striking over 100 high-value targets across Iran.

These included military command centers, missile production facilities, nuclear research sites, and homes of senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officials.

According to official and intelligence-linked sources, Israel used a combination of airstrikes, long-range drones, and cyber sabotage.

Iranian authorities confirmed that several senior military and nuclear personnel were killed, including IRGC commander Hossein Salami and nuclear scientist Fereydoun Abbasi.

The strikes also damaged critical infrastructure in Tehran and western Iran, leading to hundreds of civilian casualties.

In response, Iran launched a retaliatory operation on the same day, named “Operation True Promise III”, firing more than 150 ballistic missiles and deploying over 100 drones toward major Israeli cities including Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Beersheba.

Israel’s Iron Dome and David’s Sling defense systems intercepted a majority of the incoming threats, but some managed to hit residential areas, killing at least 24 people and injuring nearly 500, according to Israeli emergency services.

Iran claims the Israeli strikes killed over 220 people, including military personnel and civilians, with more than 1,200 injured. It also reported damage to several oil facilities and military compounds.

The flare-up follows years of mounting tension over Iran’s nuclear programme, Israeli covert sabotage inside Iran, and Iran’s support for groups like Hezbollah and Palestinian factions.

This latest direct confrontation is the first time both states have openly targeted each other’s territory with full-scale missile and air campaigns.

While diplomatic efforts are underway behind the scenes, both governments have signaled readiness for further escalation if provoked.

The international community, including the United States, European Union, and the UN Security Council, has called for de-escalation and a return to diplomacy.

Mr Ablakwa In a firm diplomatic appeal, reiterated the Government of Ghana’s call on both Israel and Iran to de-escalate tensions and return to the path of dialogue.

“The Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities,” the Foreign Minister stressed.
