South Africa’s police intelligence chief arrested over fraud allegations

Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo denies the charges Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo denies the charges

South Africa’s criminal intelligence chief Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo has been arrested and has appeared in court on allegations of fraud and corruption.

Gen Khumalo was picked up on Thursday evening after landing at the main international airport in Johannesburg by members of the anti-corruption unit, local media reported.

He made his court appearance in the capital, Pretoria, on Friday, alongside six co-accused, all senior police officers.

Their lawyer said they intended to plead not guilty to any charges laid against them.

Details of the charges are not yet clear but local media say Gen Khumalo and the other six had been linked to an ongoing investigation into alleged abuse of intelligence funds and potentially unlawful appointments within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

It marks the second wave of arrests within two weeks targeting the SAPS’ Crime Intelligence unit.

Three other top officials are facing corruption and other charges.

The arrests have raised questions about the integrity of the unit, which is meant to be actively preventing crime and cracking down on criminals.

The Democratic Alliance, the second-biggest party in the coalition government, welcomed the arrests, saying it was a right “step in rescuing an organisation on the brink of collapse”.

“This points to yet another serious breach of trust within a critical state institution tasked with performing our nation’s policing functions and mandate,” the party said in a statement.

The Economic Freedom Fighters party said the arrest of Gen Khumalo was not an isolated scandal, but the “latest symptom of a sick, and hollowed-out policing system, which urgently requires structural overhaul”.

Gen Khumalo became the head of the Crime Intelligence unit in 2022.

Up until then, he had served in different police units for more than two decades.

Numerous corruption cases against senior police officers over the years have tainted their reputation in the country.

Lead Africa’s AI Revolution – Dr. Bryan Acheampong Charges Youth

0

Dr. Bryan Acheampong

Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has charged Ghanaian youth to seize crucial opportunities in the global artificial intelligence (AI) revolution.

Speaking during a major public lecture at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), Dr. Acheampong emphasised that Ghanaian youth must transition from being passive consumers of foreign AI technologies to becoming active creators of solutions tailored to African needs.

His address, titled, “AI Disruptions and the Future of Work: Readiness of our Youth,” outlined both the risks of inaction and the tremendous opportunities that AI presents for Ghana’s development.

Dr. Acheampong highlighted how other African nations like Rwanda and South Africa have already implemented forward-thinking AI policies, while Ghana lags without a coordinated approach.

“We have brilliant minds and innovative startups working in AI across the country,” he noted. “What we lack is a national framework to align these efforts with our economic priorities and cultural values.”

The former Minister for Food and Agriculture warned that relying on AI systems developed abroad comes with significant risks. He cited examples where foreign-developed recruitment algorithms might disadvantage Ghanaian job seekers due to cultural biases in their programming, or where medical diagnostic tools could misinterpret conditions common in Africa but rare elsewhere.

To address these challenges, Dr. Acheampong proposed two key initiatives: the creation of a National AI Policy Framework to guide development and implementation, and the establishment of a Ghana AI and Emerging Technologies Commission to oversee ethical deployment and coordinate investments.

He identified several sectors where strategic AI application could drive significant progress.

In agriculture, he said AI tools could help smallholder farmers with early disease detection, climate adaptation strategies, and market predictions to reduce post-harvest losses. The education sector stands to benefit from curriculum reforms that incorporate AI literacy and hands-on learning opportunities, he added.

For public services, AI could enhance government efficiency through improved data analysis and service delivery systems. The creative industries, including media and entertainment, could use AI to amplify local content while protecting intellectual property rights.

“These applications aren’t science fiction,” Dr. Acheampong stressed. “They’re practical solutions that could transform lives and livelihoods if we implement them thoughtfully and strategically.”

The Abetifi legislator outlined three critical requirements for successful AI adoption in Ghana.

First, establishing public trust through transparent and beneficial AI applications. Second, developing human capital by equipping workers with both technical skills and ethical understanding. Third, ensuring institutional readiness through appropriate regulations and infrastructure.

He particularly emphasised the need to extend AI education beyond major cities. “This technological revolution must benefit all Ghanaians, not just those in urban centres,” he said. “We need programmes that reach farmers, market traders, and small business owners across the country.”

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Acheampong challenged students to embrace their role as pioneers in Ghana’s AI future.

“You have the opportunity to shape how this technology develops in our country,” he said, and added, “Whether you become journalists, entrepreneurs, or civil servants, AI will be part of your work. The question is whether you’ll help guide its development to serve Ghanaian interests.”

Ghana’s civil service is politicised, not neutral – Kpebu

0

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has asserted that Ghana’s civil service is not politically neutral, contrary to public perception. According to him, partisan interests have long influenced appointments and dismissals within the public sector.

Speaking on Joy FM’s on Friday, Mr. Kpebu argued that successive governments have historically treated the civil service as an extension of their political machinery, often placing individuals aligned with their agenda in key positions.

“We say the civil service is neutral, but it is not true. If you listen to and read papers from very high-ranking officials, when it comes to the civil service, they are partisan. They help the government in power,” he stated.

“So, when they help the government in power and the next one comes and says, ‘No, what you and the previous government were doing doesn’t align with my manifesto,’ you will go. So, when I hear people saying the civil service is neutral, I’m like, you’re joking.”

Mr. Kpebu’s comments come amid ongoing public debate over the recent dismissal and reinstatement of over 100 Bank of Ghana staff—a development that has revived discussions on political interference in public service employment.

He cautioned that political influence in the civil service is deeply ingrained and unlikely to be eliminated anytime soon.

“It can never totally go away, that one is clear, based on experience. From the nature of human beings, no, it cannot end,” he said.

KNUST DoSA tackles gender-based violence, sexual harassment

By Florence Afriyie Mensah

Kumasi, June 26, GNA – The Directorate of Student Affairs (DoSA) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has organized a workshop aimed at scaling up efforts to combat gender-based violence and sexual harassment.

It was a collaboration between KNUST DoSA, the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the Perfector of Sentiment (POS) Foundation, a human rights advocacy organization with sponsorship from Amplify Change.

The event brought together faculty members, students, healthcare professionals, university security officers and other stakeholders to build awareness, enhance institutional response, and promote coordinated strategies to create a safer and more inclusive campus environment.

Professor Marian Asantewah Nkansah, Director of Student Affairs, described the initiative as a vital step towards fostering respect and accountability within the university community.

She said raising awareness through knowledge and skills building could engender respect, consent and dignity.

Prof. Nkansah encouraged participants to trust the university’s reporting mechanisms, assuring that all personal information shared through official channels would be handled with the highest confidentiality.

Mrs. Victoria De-Graft Adjei, Deputy Registrar and Head of the KNUST Counselling Centre, outlined several institutional tools and policies designed to prevent and respond to incidents of sexual misconduct.

They included the Sexual Harassment Policy, Gender Policy, Counselling Policy, the Student Code of Conduct, and the KNUST e-Counselling App (an online app enabling anonymous reporting).

She assured that confidentiality remained key in handling issues affecting students and urged them to open up to the counselors.

The Counsellor entreated families and faith-based organizations and educational institutions to support early education on empathy and respectful behaviour.
Dr Mrs. Frances Dufie Azumah, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Sociology and Social Work, KNUST highlighted the relevance of the gender-based violence and sexual harassment policy, education and awareness.

She indicated that the University’s policies aligned with nationally and internationally accepted standards.

Dr Azumah used the occasion to caution people not to use their positions to harass or intimidate others, saying that “we want a safe space for all.”

Mr. Jonathan Osei Owusu, Founder and Executive Director of the POS Foundation, commended KNUST for demonstrating institutional commitment to gender equity.

“The real meaning of gender equality has been practically manifested by KNUST.

I see a lot of great women managing student affairs, and it’s encouraging,” he said.

What was left, he pointed out, was lack of awareness around what constituted sexual harassment, explaining that some students did not recognize what qualified as harassment while others underestimated its seriousness.

NPP Launches Patriotic Institute to Train Next Generation of Leaders

Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has established the Patriotic Institute, a leadership academy designed to institutionalize the party’s ideological foundations and prepare future leaders.

Launched on June 25, 2025, at the party’s Accra headquarters, the initiative responds to what NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua calls an urgent need for “structured political education and ideological clarity.”

Kodua declared the institute the NPP’s official ideological training arm, marking “a new era of deliberate political education.” It will deepen understanding of the party’s history, liberal democratic values, and governance philosophy through a tiered curriculum. A mandatory foundational program will train all elected and appointed officers—from polling station coordinators to national executives—with completion certificates required for future leadership roles. Specialized courses will target specific party levels.

“Competent, disciplined, and visionary leaders won’t emerge by accident,” Kodua stated, emphasizing that the NPP can no longer assume values “automatically pass to the next generation.” Training will combine workshops, online platforms, mentorship, and regional centres, facilitated by former ministers, academics, and international experts. An appointed Director and Management Committee will oversee operations.

The General Secretary also urged unity ahead of internal elections, cautioning against public discord: “We remain sons and daughters of the same tradition—the elephant family.” The institute builds on groundwork by former leaders including ex-General Secretary John Boadu and academic Prof. Kwamena Essilfie.

Speaker of Parliament calls for parliamentary debate on 24-Hour Economy Policy

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah

Accra, June 27, GNA—The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has proposed that the 24-Hour Economy Policy after its launch must be presented to Parliament for comprehensive debate to get the buy-in of all organs of government.

The move, he said, would make the policy document acceptable to all Ghanaians, irrespective of political affiliations to ensure seamless and holistic implementation of the policy.

He referenced the Vision 2020 Policy under President Jerry John Rawlings government and the Free Senior High School Policy under President Akufo-Addo’s Administration, which were presented to the plenary for debate.

Mr Bagbin made the proposal in Accra on Thursday when Mr Augustus Obuadum Tanoh, Presidential Advisor for the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, presented the 24-Hour Economy Policy Document to him.

The programme is designed to transform and stimulate the private sector for job creation and create prosperity for all Ghanaians.

President John Dramani Mahama will officially launch the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

Mr Bagbin remarked: “This policy must be presented to Parliament after the launch to give it an official stamp and provide the opportunity to be debated to get the buy-in of all organs of government.

“We have to make it a national programme to ensure its seamless implementation. We don’t need to categorise it on partisan, religious and ethnic basis”.

Mr Tanoh stated that the programme was anchored on three categories namely; Production Transformation, Supply Chain and Market Efficiency and Human Capital Development.

Those anchors, he explained, were supported by eight sub programmes including Grow 24, Make 24, Show Ghana, Go Ghana, Digital Technology, and Aspire 24, which is meant to re-orient the mind-set of Ghanaian workers to optimise productivity.

The 24-Hour Economy Policy was a major campaign message of the National Democratic Congress to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

Central University partners with alumnus to digitise hostel management through PrestoStay

0

Central University has launched a landmark collaboration with Ghanaian tech firm Presto to revolutionise student accommodation services across its campuses, marking a bold step in alumni-led innovation.

The new digital platform, PrestoStay, is the brainchild of Nana Kweku Adumatta, a Central University alumnus and founder of Presto. The system aims to transform the entire hostel management process, eliminating manual frustrations and bringing transparency, speed, and ease to students and administrative staff alike.

PrestoStay allows students to book rooms online, make payments digitally, receive real-time updates, track vacancies, and renew accommodation—all on one platform. It also offers 24/7 support and integrates directly with the university’s internal databases for enhanced security and efficiency.

“We believe technology should make everyday systems invisible,” said Mr Adumatta. “Managing hostels shouldn’t feel like a battle. With this partnership, we’re not just improving efficiency, we’re improving peace of mind, for both students and staff.”

The partnership is a significant milestone for both the university and the tech firm. Presto’s first client during its early startup phase was Central University, making the latest collaboration a symbolic reunion fuelled by innovation and trust.

According to James Amezi Anani, Head of Innovations and Development at Central University, the project is a shining example of the institution’s impact on its graduates. “When the education is right, this is what an alumnus can do—solving real-life problems,” he said. “We’re proud to see our own graduate come back to build something truly transformative.”

Key features of PrestoStay include online room bookings, automated allocation, renewal alerts, digital receipts, and transparent billing—all designed to streamline housing services and enhance the student experience.

The introduction of the platform positions Central University as a leader in campus digitisation and smart infrastructure in Ghana, setting a new standard for how educational institutions can leverage local expertise to drive change.

With the successful rollout of PrestoStay, the university hopes to inspire other institutions to embrace homegrown tech solutions and build lasting partnerships that serve both students and the broader academic community.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park lauds President Mahama for reinstating Founder’s Day

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (KNMP) has commended the Ghanaian government for reinstating “Founder’s Day” in honour of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The holiday, formalised through the National Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, reaffirms Nkrumah’s legacy as Ghana’s founding leader on September 21.

In 2019, the holiday was moved to August 4 under the NPP-led Akufo-Addo administration.

However, following an executive instrument by President John Dramani Mahama on June 26, 2025. The holiday has been moved back to August 4.

In a press release on June 27, 2025, KNMP hailed the move as a “victory for truth and historical justice,” highlighting Nkrumah’s unmatched role in Ghana’s liberation from colonial rule.

“This decision is not only a victory for truth and historical justice, but a reaffirmation of the indisputable legacy of Dr Kwame Nkrumah as the true founder of Ghana.

“As in all cases, while we note that others may have contributed in various ways to Ghana’s political development, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah remains peerless in Ghana’s political history,” the statement read.

The statement quoted former Guinean President Sekou Touré’s 1972 tribute: “Those who attempted to humiliate him only succeeded in glorifying him.”

The memorial park urged lawmakers to further entrench the holiday in law to prevent future revisionism and invited the public to visit the Accra site to learn more about Nkrumah’s legacy.

“We commend government for this singular decision, which exemplifies in more ways than one, the government’s determination to correct historical distortions and assert Dr. Nkrumah’s status as the founder of our beloved nation, Ghana!

“We would now call on the Government, Parliament, and the Constitutional Review Committee to take steps to entrench Founder’s Day in law to safeguard it from future political revisionism and historical distortions.

“The legacy of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah must be preserved for posterity untainted and undiluted,” the statement added.

PURC must justify 2.45% tariff hike – CUTS Int’l demands transparency

0

The West African Regional Director of CUTS International, Appiah Adomako Kusi, has strongly criticised the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) recent 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs, describing it as illogical and lacking transparency.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday, June 27, Adomako Kusi questioned the basis for the adjustment, particularly at a time when the cost of thermal energy generation, the country’s dominant energy source, has significantly declined.

“We know that Ghana’s energy mix is largely thermal, about 72% thermal and 28% hydro. Thermal generation depends heavily on natural gas and crude oil, both of which are dollar-denominated. If prices for these thermal inputs have dropped by as much as 30%, and we know most of our electricity is generated through thermal means, then it makes no scientific or economic sense to raise tariffs. This defies logic, “he said.

Mr. Kusi called on the PURC to publicly disclose the methodology behind the new tariff adjustment, insisting that Ghanaians deserve a clear explanation.

“PURC must come clean with the calculation that led to this 2.45% increment,” he stated.

The PURC, in a statement issued on Wednesday, June 25, announced that the new tariffs will take effect from July 1, 2025. The Commission said the adjustment followed its regular quarterly review, which considers a range of economic indicators including the cedi-dollar exchange rate, inflation trends, natural gas prices, and the overall electricity generation mix.

While electricity tariffs are set to rise, water tariffs will remain unchanged for the third quarter of the year. The Commission defended its decision as necessary to ensure the financial sustainability of utility providers.

However, the explanation appears not to have satisfied stakeholders like CUTS International, who have demanded accountability and greater clarity in how such decisions are reached, especially amid ongoing economic pressures on consumers.

Ho, June 27, GNA – Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, has said a well-developed emergency preparedness plan, which is regularly reviewed, could help minimise significant losses and impact on humans and property.

He called for a practical and collective roadmap for swift action to mitigate its impact when disaster strikes.

Mr Gunu disclosed these during a workshop on Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) with District Assemblies, at the instance of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) and the Volta River Authority (VRA), in Ho.

He said the workshop underscored the importance for proactive governance and community safety, resilience, and sustainable development.

“We cannot afford to be reactive; we must be proactive, planning meticulously for any eventuality.”

He observed that the effectiveness of a well-coordinated regional emergency response hinged significantly on the strength of your respective District Emergency Preparedness Plans and stakeholders’ commitment to sound environmental management practices.

He said issues such as deforestation, poor waste management, and unsustainable land use practices could exacerbate the impact of natural phenomena.

“By embracing effective environmental management, we are not just protecting our natural heritage; we are building resilience against future disasters. We must ensure that our development initiatives are environmentally sound and contribute to the long-term sustainability of our region.”

“Delve into actionable strategies and brainstorm practical steps for implementation, monitoring, and regular review and again identify potential gaps in our current approaches and work collaboratively to address them.”

The Regional Minister said the VRCC was committed to supporting inter-agency stakeholder efforts in strengthening disaster preparedness and environmental stewardship at the district level.

“Let this workshop be a catalyst for renewed commitment and enhanced cooperation. Let us emerge from these discussions with clearer objectives, stronger plans, and a shared resolve to make the Volta Region a model of resilience and sustainable development.”

Madam Akosua Effah Owusu, a representative of VRA, said in a presentation that the EPP formed part of the entity’s annual outreach programme to engage key stakeholders and elicit responses to guide its operations, particularly, on anticipated disasters.

She said the EPP was an early warming mechanism, which identified potential emergencies and outlines pre-planned actions to minimize property damage and loss of lives, or risks posed in a case of spillage to people, property and economic activities downstream.

She said during emergency situations protocols included detection and evaluation, notification activated, followed by implementation and direction of emergency repairs and preventive action and participation in the warning of potentially affected people.

She indicated that under spillage emergencies, expected inundated areas were mapped-out, designated safe havens outlined and targeted messages relayed to impacted communities based on the level of the discharge with collaboration with key stakeholders at the district, including Chiefs and related institutions.

Mr Abdul Noor Wahab, Director, Department of Water Resources and Renewable Energy, said EPP was a national security concern and encompassed inter-agencies towards mitigating the effects on humans and the environment.

He insisted on thorough emergency planning and management at the District levels to be disaster-ready, saying fighting emergencies was always a collaborative responsibility.

Participants demanded greater collaboration and information flow from VRA on emergency risk assessment, rainfall trends, tributaries assessment, levels of water in reservoir to aid planning and management in handling of emergencies.

Nine Districts in three Regions, Volta, Eastern and the Greater Accra, are on the radar of the VRA on EPP and EMP situations.

GMB Winner Exposes Boyfriend –

0

Inaugural winner of Ghana’s Most Beautiful (GMB) pageant, Ama, has broken her long silence, sharing a harrowing story of betrayal, emotional abuse, and financial exploitation at the hands of her former boyfriend — a man she says was not only a pastor but also a master manipulator.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Ofie Kwanso with Cynthia Tima Kumkum, Ama peeled back the glamorous curtain of her post-pageant life, revealing the devastating personal struggles she endured shortly after her groundbreaking win in the maiden edition of GMB.

“After I won, everything changed,” Ama said. “I got endorsement deals, was invited to countless media platforms, and became a household name. But behind all the glitz, I was suffering in silence.”

Ama disclosed that at the height of her newfound fame, she remained devoted to her relationship with her then-boyfriend, a pastor. Unbeknownst to her, he harboured selfish intentions. “He took control of everything — my finances, my appearances, and even the car gifted to me by TV3,” she recounted.

According to Ama, the pastor expropriated her earnings, collected fees from endorsements in her name, and publicly paraded the luxury car she had won — positioning himself as the face of her success. “He would drive my car around and people started calling him Ghana’s Most Handsome. He stole my spotlight,” she said, visibly emotional.

Fans and social media users have been stunned by her revelations, with many expressing outrage over the emotional manipulation and financial abuse she endured.

“I’m telling my story now because I want young women to know that silence only protects the abuser,” she said. “You have the right to your success — and no one should take that away from you.”

Let’s Document Our Cultural Practices – King Mswati III

Otumfuo in a handshake with King Mswati III

HIS ROYAL Majesty, King Mswati III of Eswatini, has urged Africans to jealously protect and preserve their rich traditional and cultural practices in this globalised world.

According to him, globalisation poses serious threat to cultures and traditions which dates back to centuries, stressing that Africans should safeguard their identities.

He particularly tasked African traditional leaders to work assiduously to ensure the documentation of their rich traditional and cultural practices for generations yet unborn.

“We should document our practices for future generations,” the visiting monarch remarked, and stated that the culture and traditions show the identity of the African people.

King Mswati III was speaking at a mammoth durbar of chiefs and people of Asanteman, which was held in his honour at the ‘Dwabirem’ in the Manhyia Palace, in Kumasi on Thursday.

Continuing, he recounted that African forebears bequeathed their rich traditions and culture to the present generation, adding that it was their duty to also preserve it for future generations.

The visiting king said he was thrilled and highly impressed about how Asantes have preserved their culture, saying that Asantes deserved applause.

He showered tons of praises on Asantes, especially Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for using the Manhyia Palace Musuem to preserve Asante culture of over 400 years for future generations.

“I have seen the history and display of Asante heritage during my visit, and it’s a living testimony and reaffirmation of traditional leadership on our continent,” the king remarked.

He described Otumfuo’s 26 years reign on the Golden Stool as a “beacon for African traditional rulers”, emphasising that Otumfuo is championing Africa’s true identity as a people.

King Mswati, however, said the preservation of the rich African culture and traditions alone was not enough, stressing that Africa’s culture and traditions should impact their economies.

According to him, Eswatini under his able leadership, has managed to use its festivals to showcase their culture and traditions to boost tourism, to support the local economy.

“We have been using our festivals to attract tourists into our country, and this policy has been attracting funds to support the economy. Revenue from tourism continues to grow,” he stated.

King Mswati therefore implored sister African countries to emulate their shining example by strategically using their festivals to attract tourists to improve their economies.

The visiting king, who was extremely thrilled after observing and a having a feel of the Asante culture, extended an invitation to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to a national cultural festival in Eswatini.

According to him, he hopes his historic visit to Otumfuo would help strengthen the developmental, social and economic ties between the people of Eswatini and Asanteman.

Otumfuo, in a speech read on his behalf by Nana Otuo Serebuo, the Juaben Paramount Chief, said, “King Mswati III’s visit should strengthen the Asante and Eswatini kingdoms.”

He particularly called for deeper economic ties between the two kingdoms to improve the lives of their people, saying, “Your visit shows unity and progress among African kings.”

The Asantehene also applauded King Mswati III for being a visionary leader, who has worked tirelessly to uphold the proud traditions and culture of his people.

‘Accountability as a government official is inevitable’ – Eugene Boakye

Eugene Boakye Antwi, former MP for Subin constituency Eugene Boakye Antwi, former MP for Subin constituency

Former Member of Parliament for Subin Constituency, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has urged government appointees to embrace accountability and subject themselves to lawful scrutiny when called upon.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Upfront programme on June 26, 2025, he said accountability is a natural part of public service and should not be opposed.

Commenting on the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s probe of the former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta over allegations of corruption, he emphasised that ‘nobody is bigger than the law’ and that government official (both past and present) must be prepared to face investigations when necessary.

“If today the NIB should say I should submit myself before the law, I’m not bigger than the law,” he said.

He noted that anyone who accepts a public appointment should expect to be held accountable at some point.

“So long as you are going into politics, and so long as you are going to accept an appointment to become a minister, deputy minister, or agency head, know that the day of accountability will come. When it comes, just go and face the law,” he indicated.

Boakye Antwi argued that those who have done nothing wrong should have no fear of the law.

He further warned against turning political parties into safe havens for wrongdoing.

“We should not be making the party a safe haven for criminals, cautioning that doing so could damage the party’s image”, he stated.

He, however, stressed the need for political parties to defend their members when they are being unfairly targeted or harassed.

He said that genuine accountability should be separated from politically motivated attacks.

He concluded that many public officials have cooperated quietly with investigations from bodies like the NIB and EOCO without incident, and such cooperation should not be sensationalised.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has issued a public notice blacklisting ten Money Transfer Organisations (MTOs) for operating in the remittance and forex markets without proper authorization. The central bank warns individuals and financial institutions against transacting with these unapproved entities.
In a statement dated 27th June 2025, the BoG identified the following MTOs as unlicensed:

1.Ace Money Transfer

2.Remit Union

3.Remit Home

4.Roze Remit

5.Monty Global

6.Nairagram

7.I-Transfer

8.Hurupay

9.Eversend

10.Izi Send

According to the central bank, these organizations have not obtained the necessary approvals to deal in foreign exchange or facilitate international money transfers in Ghana, contravening provisions in the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723). Specifically, section 3.1 prohibits engaging in foreign exchange business without a valid license, while section 15.3 mandates that all transfers to or from Ghana must be conducted through licensed dealers.
The BoG emphasized that public institutions, banks, Dedicated Electronic Money Issuers (DEMIs), and Enhanced Payment Service Providers (EPSPs) should immediately cease any dealings with the listed entities.

“Approved MTOs are reminded to terminate their foreign exchange flows through their partner institutions only and to adhere strictly to all the guidelines in respect of their operations,” the notice read.

The central bank cautioned that non-compliance will attract severe sanctions, including possible license withdrawal for any institution found in breach of the directive.
This action forms part of the BoG’s broader efforts to sanitize Ghana’s financial ecosystem and ensure the integrity of the country’s remittance and forex operations.

Stephen Appiah playfully disciplines Haminu Draman for late arrival at Monday Stars game

Haminu Draman doing press-ups Haminu Draman doing press-ups

There was a lighthearted moment at Bawaleshie Park on Monday, June 23, 2025, when former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah reminded everyone that rules are rules, even for old teammates.

The Monday Stars, a well-known informal gathering of retired and active Ghanaian footballers, attracts big names like Mubarak Wakaso, Jordan Ayew, and Appiah himself, who lace up to keep fit and stay connected to the game.

At the latest meet-up, former Black Stars winger Haminu Draman turned up late, and tradition demanded he pay for it the usual way: press-ups in front of everyone.

A video shared on social media shows Appiah playfully ordering Draman to the ground while amused fans looked on.

Draman laughed it off as he counted out his punishment reps before finally being allowed to join the session.

The Monday Stars group has built a reputation not just for reuniting Ghana’s football family but also for keeping the atmosphere disciplined yet fun.

For any player, whether you’re an ex-captain, an active Premier League star, or a World Cup veteran, showing up late means one thing: press-ups.

For Draman, it was all smiles in the end, as he rejoined his old mates under the watchful eye of his former skipper, proving once again that the bonds formed in the Black Stars dressing room never really fade.

Minority vows to summon PURC over 2.45% electricity tariff hike

0

The Minority in Parliament has vowed to summon the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) over the recent 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs.

The Caucus is demanding clarity and justification for the increment, citing improving macroeconomic indicators that, in their view, do not support such an adjustment.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the Ranking Member on the Energy Committee, George Kwame Aboagye, questioned the rationale behind the upward review.

“The exchange rate peaked this year at GHS15.527 but is now around GHS10.30. Inflation, which stood at 22.4% in March, dropped to 21.2% in April and further to 18.1% in May. It is projected to decline to around 16% in June. So, why the increase?” he queried.

He argued that with hydro and solar energy sources accounting for about 30% of Ghana’s energy mix and remaining stable, there is no solid basis for the tariff hike.

“There is no justification for the increase. About 70% of our generation relies on fuel—gas, Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), and Light Crude Oil (LCO). Most generators are dual-cycle, so if HFO and LCO prices rise, we can switch to gas. The price of gas has not gone up,” he explained.

Citing the 2025 budget, Mr. Aboagye noted that utility tariffs are to be reviewed quarterly, with changes based on prevailing economic conditions—either upward or downward.

“You cannot just wake up and increase electricity tariffs by 2.45%. PURC must come forward and explain this decision to Ghanaians,” he said firmly.

Nigeria Police To Investigate Armed Officers Escorting Angela Okorie

0

The Nigeria Police Force has begun an investigation into a viral video showing Nollywood actress Angela Okorie jogging in public while being followed by armed police officers.

The video, which has gained widespread attention on social media, shows the actress jogging along a road with uniformed officers trailing closely behind her.

While some viewers were intrigued, many raised concerns about the officers’ conduct.

In a statement shared on Wednesday via its official X account, police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi described the officers’ actions as unprofessional and not in line with the standards expected of police personnel.

“The Nigeria Police Force strongly frowns at the conduct of armed police officers seen in a viral video trailing actress Angela Okorie while she jogged,” the statement said.

Adejobi explained that the police are trying to find out whether the video was taken on a movie set or during a personal outing. He added that steps are being taken to identify the officers involved and that disciplinary action will be taken if necessary.

Angela Okorie, who is currently promoting a new movie project titled Queens of Guns, has not yet spoken publicly about the incident.

The video has sparked mixed reactions online. Some people criticized the use of police officers for what appears to be a private or entertainment purpose, while others believe it may have been part of a film production.

Ghana Armed Forces ready to defend against all threats – Army Chief

0

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, has embarked on a working visit to the Northern Region as part of his nationwide familiarisation tour following his recent appointment to lead the Ghana Army.

During a visit to the Northern Command Headquarters in Tamale, Major General Gbetanu highlighted the importance of the tour, stating that it aims to strengthen operational readiness and engage directly with frontline troops involved in safeguarding national security.

“Since assuming office as Army Chief, I have embarked on a familiarisation and operational visit to all army units,” he said.

“This is my 10th visit, and it is intended to help me assess their operational, administrative, and logistical situations. It also provides an opportunity to connect with troops deployed at the frontlines and motivate them to give their best in protecting our motherland, Ghana.”

As part of his itinerary, the Army Chief inspected key military installations and ongoing training programs in the region.

He visited the 6th Infantry Battalion and the Army Special Operations Training School (ASOTS) in Daboya. He also paid a courtesy call on the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Naa Abukari II, to strengthen civil-military relations and foster collaboration with traditional authorities.

In an interview, Major General Gbetanu reaffirmed the military’s commitment to national defense and counterterrorism efforts.

“The Ghana Armed Forces is fully prepared to contain any threat—whether external or internal. Troops are deployed across the country in strategic positions to respond to any threat that may confront us as a nation,” he assured.

End partisan bias in public sector recruitment – Franklin Cudjoe urges

0

Founding President of IMANI-Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe, has called for an end to entrenched political bias in public sector employment, describing it as a dangerous injustice that undermines national development and erodes public trust in state institutions.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, Mr Cudjoe criticised the persistent politicisation of recruitment and dismissal processes within the public service, with specific reference to the recent dismissal and subsequent reinstatement of some staff at the Bank of Ghana.

“It is a technical thing that we need to stop. I don’t think it helps us,” he stated.

“I’m asking myself, when will this stop? I think it will stop when we show the public how recruitment is done in public service,” he added.

Mr Cudjoe had earlier expressed similar concerns in a Facebook post, where he condemned the reported dismissals at the central bank, suggesting they were politically motivated.

His comments reflect growing public concern over claims that individuals are often denied appointments or unfairly dismissed from public service based on real or perceived partisan affiliations.

He urged political leaders to pursue an inclusive and merit-based recruitment framework that prioritises competence and national interest over party loyalty.

The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, will host India’s Prime Minister, H.E. Narendra Modi, for a two-day official visit to Ghana from Wednesday, July 2 to Thursday, July 3, 2025, the Presidency has announced.

This landmark visit marks the first official trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in recent years and reflects the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations.

According to a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the visit underscores the warm and long-standing ties between Ghana and India, and both leaders are expected to use the opportunity to enhance cooperation across a range of sectors.

The agenda for Prime Minister Modi’s visit includes:

  • A bilateral meeting with President Mahama at the Jubilee House.
  • High-level discussions on trade, investment, agriculture, education, technology, healthcare and energy.
  • An exchange of views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.

Bilateral agreements & joint press briefing

One of the key outcomes of the visit will be the signing of several bilateral agreements to expand collaboration frameworks between Accra and New Delhi. These agreements are expected to lay the foundation for increased economic and developmental engagement.

Following the signing ceremony, President Mahama and Prime Minister Modi will address a joint press conference, where further details of their cooperation roadmap will be shared.

To commemorate the visit, President Mahama will also host a State Dinner in honour of Prime Minister Modi and his accompanying delegation. The event will bring together key political figures, diplomats, and business leaders to celebrate the enduring friendship between Ghana and India.

The Presidency says the visit is expected to solidify bilateral ties, promote economic diplomacy, and open new avenues for technological and knowledge exchange between the two countries.

India has long been a strategic partner in Ghana’s development journey—supporting infrastructure, ICT, education, and industrial growth. This visit is seen as a significant step in building on those foundations.

Speaker Bagbin defends celebration of Ghana’s revolutionary history

0

Alban Bagbin is the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin is the Speaker of Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has criticised individuals, particularly within the judiciary, who, in his view, downplay and undermine the country’s revolutionary past.

According to him, this reflects hypocrisy, as the same individuals applaud the revolutions of foreign nations while opposing efforts by Ghanaians to commemorate their own revolutionary history.

Speaking at an event in Accra on June 26, 2025, Bagbin raised concerns that such actions could erase certain historical events.

He believes that the lack of celebration prevents younger generations from understanding the roots of these revolutions and from fully appreciating the country’s history.

“Ghana, a small uprising which turned into a revolution being led by young military officers, is seen as an anathema and not to be celebrated. So, as you grow up, there’s nothing to prick your minds to ask why that thing happened, and you start falling into the same trap.

“I’m happy you mentioned the judiciary. They ruled against the celebration of the Revolutionary Day, whilst they applaud same when celebrated by Americans, France, and in other countries. So why not in Ghana? There might be something wrong with us,” Bagbin said.

Bagbin, a former lawmaker, accused those critics of siding with corruption, arguing that while they criticise the country’s revolutionary past, they fail to clearly articulate the reasons for their disagreement or specify the issues they have identified.

“When you see people criticising it and not identifying specific areas they disagree with, then you can count them among the corrupt,” he added.

According to a report by Manasseh Azure, although the scandal predates Sarpong’s tenure, his input is required due to his role as a senior partner at KPMG when then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned the firm to conduct an investigative audit on the SML contract with the GRA and the Ministry of Finance.

The OSP is currently investigating suspected corruption and related offenses involving revenue assurance contracts between the GRA and SML.

Earlier, the OSP arrested former Commissioner-General Reverend Dr Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah and two others; Isaac Crentsil, former Commissioner of Customs and now General Manager at SML, and Christian Tetteh Sottie, former Technical Advisor and now Managing Director and CEO of SML.

The three were detained on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, after failing to meet their bail conditions.

Additional individuals arrested in connection with the case include Evans Adusei, CEO of SML; Philip Mensah, former Deputy Commissioner of Legal at GRA and now a legal consultant to SML; and Joseph Kuruk and Faustina Adjorkor, both staff of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA). Also implicated is Kofi Nti, a former GRA Commissioner-General.

The SML scandal is among several high-profile cases being examined by the OSP, with former finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, declared a suspect and wanted fugitive.

The OSP is scrutinising agreements involving petroleum and mineral revenue oversight, which were brokered between SML and GRA under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.

Initially intended to monitor the downstream petroleum sector, the contract’s scope was expanded in 2023 to include upstream petroleum operations and the mining sector, drawing public criticism.

In 2024, following the KPMG audit, the government suspended the contract. By then, GH¢1.06 billion had already been paid to SML, and if it had continued, the deal was projected to cost the state GH¢5.17 billion over five years.

In reaction to the scandal, a coalition of five civil society organisations filed a lawsuit seeking to recover the GH¢1 billion already disbursed.

Vinicius (R) scored to put Madrid 1-0 up Vinicius (R) scored to put Madrid 1-0 up

Real Madrid booked their place in the next round of the FIFA Club World Cup with a confident 3-0 victory over Austria’s Salzburg on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

The European giants, five-time champions of the competition, seized control with two moments of Brazilian brilliance from Vinicius Junior just before halftime.

Having missed an early one-on-one chance after Jude Bellingham’s precise through ball, Vinicius made amends in the 40th minute.

He latched onto another pass from Bellingham, danced past defender Joane Gadou, and buried a low shot beyond goalkeeper Christian Zawieschitzky.

Five minutes later, the Brazilian forward turned provider, flicking a clever backheel to Federico Valverde, who coolly slotted home Madrid’s second just before the break.

Salzburg, who had already suffered a heavy Champions League defeat to Real earlier this year, created chances of their own but found Bellingham in the way, this time in defence, as he cleared Edmund Baidoo’s goal-bound effort off the line in the second half.

Gonzalo Garcia sealed the win six minutes from time, finishing off Madrid’s efficient display with a clinical strike to make it two consecutive multi-goal victories for Los Blancos, who had opened their tournament with a draw against Al Hilal.

The win eliminates Salzburg, while Manchester City’s 5-2 triumph over Juventus means the English champions top Group H and will face Al Hilal next.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, head to Miami to take on Juventus in the round of 16 on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, still waiting on Kylian Mbappe, sidelined by illness, to make his tournament debut.

Researchers explain spike in seasonal flu, cough cases

Medical experts urge all those that have cough, fever, headache to seek treatment Medical experts urge all those that have cough, fever, headache to seek treatment

While respiratory illnesses such as flu and cough affect Ugandans year-round, researchers have identified specific months when cases tend to spike, often disrupting work and general well-being.

A review of influenza data by Prof Fred Wabwire-Mangen of Makerere University School of Public Health and colleagues, covering the years 2008 to 2014, revealed two annual peaks of respiratory infections in Uganda.

“Several trends were observed: influenza circulates throughout the year with two peaks—the major one from September to November and a minor one from March to June,” their findings, published in the Public Library of Science, indicate.

Findings

From 6,628 patient samples tested during that period, the influenza virus was detected in 10.4 percent (687 cases).

The report also noted that the dominant flu strains varied by year: Seasonal Influenza A(H3) was common in 2008–2009 and again in 2012–2014, A(H1N1)pdm09 dominated in 2010, and Influenza B in 2011.

“The peaks generally coincided with times of higher humidity, lower temperatures, and increased rainfall,” the researchers noted.

Over recent weeks, Ugandans have expressed concern about a noticeable rise in cases of flu and cough. Many liken the symptoms to those of Covid-19, especially given the number of individuals calling in sick or missing work.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, chills, headache, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhoea. Severe cases may require hospitalisation.

Dr Henry Kyobe, the National Incident Commander for Covid-19 at the Ministry of Health, said this month typically aligns with one of the seasonal peaks for respiratory illnesses.

“The distribution of seasonal respiratory viruses aligns within this month, and it also closely corresponds with mild surges of Covid-19,” Dr Kyobe said.

“The good news is that most of the cases are mild and do not result in critical care, oxygen support, or deaths. So there is no cause for alarm,” he added.

Dr Kyobe also emphasised that the elderly remain particularly vulnerable during these seasonal surges.

“These viruses often hit seniors hardest, leading to severe illness or death. So we monitor these trends closely,” he said.

Covid-19 still lingers

Dr Bruce Kirenga, the director of the Makerere University Lung Institute, said recent research shows that Covid-19 remains one of the causes of respiratory illness in the country.

“In our recent assessment of patients in Kampala with respiratory symptoms, Covid-19 was detected in 7.8 percent of cases. This wasn’t a population-based study, but among those who sought care,” he said.

In another study involving 10 hospitals across Uganda, researchers found a Covid-19 prevalence of 3.8 percent among patients with flu and cough symptoms.

Dr Kirenga stressed the need for continued precautions, particularly for older people.

“They should wear face masks, get vaccinated, eat well, and seek medical attention early. Most importantly, they need social support—many elderly people in Africa are neglected,” he noted.

The CDC advises that individuals with flu symptoms should stay home and avoid contact with others, except to seek medical care.

Expert advice

Dr Daniel Tumwine, the team leader at the Children’s Clinic in Naalya, advised patients to increase their fluid intake and rest but cautioned against self-medicating with antibiotics.

“Most of these infections are caused by viruses, so antibiotics won’t help,” he explained.

However, he warned that in rare instances, flu and cough can develop into pneumonia, a condition where the lungs become inflamed and breathing becomes difficult.

“If your child has a persistent cough, don’t just go to a drug shop. Get a proper examination to rule out pneumonia. That’s what we fear the most,” Dr Tumwine advised.

Over 4,000 recruited for DRIP, nationwide training underway – Vanderpuye

0

The National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has announced the recruitment of 4,460 personnel to support the programme’s operations across the country.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, June 27, 2025, Mr. Vanderpuye explained that each district now has a team of 17 staff — comprising one coordinator and 16 equipment operators — to drive the implementation of the initiative aimed at improving road infrastructure nationwide.

He revealed that the newly recruited personnel are undergoing a comprehensive training programme to ensure the effective and safe handling of road equipment.

“Some of the people who were handling the equipment were not sufficiently trained,” he said.

“You know some of the tipper trucks — you must know the level you should go, and there are so many things you have to learn in managing the equipment. So, we have to take our time now.”

According to him, orientation for regional coordinators is currently ongoing in Ada, after which district coordinators will also be trained.

In parallel, all operators across the country will be taken through hands-on training to build the necessary capacity for their roles.

Mr. Vanderpuye added that President John Dramani Mahama has assured the team of a warrant to formally employ all recruits under the local government system.

This will make them official staff of the various district assemblies and ensure they can effectively carry out their responsibilities at the local level.

The District Road Improvement Programme, launched to address deteriorating road networks in underserved areas, forms part of the government’s broader agenda to enhance rural accessibility and promote economic development through improved infrastructure.

Govt Introduces New Holiday For Muslims

0

Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka

Parliament has passed the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, officially establishing Shaqq Day as a new statutory public holiday.

This move is part of a broader legislative reform to the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), which also reinstates Republic Day on July 1 as a public holiday.

Shaqq Day will be observed annually on the day immediately following Eid-ul-Fitr, a major Islamic festival marking the end of Ramadan.

The Minister for Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka said the introduction of this holiday fulfils a key pledge in the 2024 election manifesto of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and honours the public commitment of President John Dramani Mahama to promote religious inclusivity.

In presenting the Bill to Parliament, he emphasised that the amendment reflects Ghana’s evolving social fabric and commitment to equitable recognition of the country’s diverse religious and cultural identities.

“This amendment is a progressive step toward religious equity,” the minister noted.

“It acknowledges the significance of the Muslim community in our national life and ensures their practices are respected and celebrated,” he said.

Republic Day Restored

Another major highlight of the bill is the restoration of Republic Day (July 1) as a statutory public holiday. The day, which previously held only commemorative status, marks Ghana’s transition to a republic in 1960. Members of the Majority described the change as a move to restore the significance of a pivotal moment in the nation’s history.

Founders’ Day Realigned

The bill also makes significant changes to national holidays related to Ghana’s independence history.

The celebration of Founders’ Day on August 4 has been removed as a public holiday.

Instead, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day on September 21 has been renamed Founders’ Day and elevated as the day to honour Ghana’s first President and his central role in the independence movement.

Mr. Muntaka said this change “restores historical integrity” and reflects the national consensus on Nkrumah’s leadership, while acknowledging that collective efforts in the independence struggle are already celebrated on Independence Day (March 6).

Holiday Flexibility for Productivity

Additionally, the bill empowers the President to shift the observance of certain midweek holidays to the preceding Monday or following Friday — a measure intended to enhance productivity and boost tourism.

However, this provision will not apply to religious holidays such as Eid, Christmas, or the newly added Shaqq Day.

Under the amendment, if a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the President can declare the following Monday or preceding Friday as the day of observance.

He argued that this aligns Ghana’s holiday practices with international best practices that seek to minimise workplace disruption and improve work-life balance.

With the passage of the bill, the First Schedule of Act 601 has been revised to include Shaqq Day and Republic Day as public holidays, while Republic Day has been removed from the commemorative list, leaving African Union Day (May 25).

Follow Roadmap To Address Our Concerns – GRNMA To Govt

0

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has called on government  to take immediate action to follow  the roadmap intended to address their concerns   following  the  postponement of a meeting with the Ministry of Health and  Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, which was scheduled for Thursday, June  26, 2025.

The GRNMA embarked on industrial action on June 2, 2025, which resulted in the total withdrawal of all nursing and midwifery services on June 9, 2025.

The leadership of GRNMA suspended the strike action following the intervention of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and pleas from Ghanaians and patients in the country’s health facilities.

But speaking at a press conference yesterday in Accra, the President of GRNMA, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, disclosed that, the “meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health scheduled for June 26, 2025 has been unilaterally rescheduled to July 10, 2025 per a letter received from the Parliamentary Services yesterday, June 25, 2025. The reason given was that, this decision follows the unavailability of some key stakeholders who are currently unavoidably outside the jurisdiction.”

She said though they have  been disappointed  by the actions of the committee,  they hope their  engagement with the  Ministries of  Health and Finance would be productive despite the postponement.

She said, “We demand the implementation of the four agreed items no later than July, 2025. This is non-negotiable, and we shall advice ourselves if any attempt is made to further delay the implementation. With the other items, we wish to reiterate our position that, we are amenable to their implementation no later than January, 2026.”

“We demand that these timelines are clearly captured and signed off at the July 10, 2025 meeting to avoid any ambiguity in the implementation schedule.

“We wish to express our sincerest appreciation to the nursing and midwifery fraternity for the deep sense of solidarity during this whole period of fighting for what is rightfully ours. To the Press, we thank you sincerely for carrying our voices to the good people of Ghana.”

The Association further called on members to remain steadfast and wait for updates and necessary actions that the National Council may deem necessary.

BoG reverses decision to terminate nearly 100 staff recruited in December 2024

In a dramatic policy reversal, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has rescinded its earlier decision to terminate the appointments of nearly 100 employees who were recruited in December 2024, following intense internal deliberations and growing public scrutiny.

The central bank had initially justified the mass termination as the outcome of a routine post-probation assessment.
