Rated PG, How to Train Your Dragon tells the story of Hiccup (Thames), a teen Viking on the isle of Berk who has aspirations of being a dragon slayer, but lacks the wherewithal to do it. However, Hiccup — the outcast son of Chief Stoic the Vast (Gerard Butler) — changes his mind about his life’s goal when he accidentally ensnares a Night Fury dragon he names Toothless and begins to bond with the creature.

After creating an artificial tail flap to help Toothless fly again, Hiccup develops an understanding of Toothless and his fellow dragons. As such, Hiccup discovers that the winged, fire-breathing creatures don’t want to harm the Vikings and that they could live in harmony with humans if Stoic and his fellow Vikings just give the dragons a chance.

Parker also stars in How to Train Your Dragon as Astrid, a teen Viking who at first is a rival of Hiccup’s during dragon slaying training but eventually becomes an ally of Hiccup and Toothless.

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding access to higher education by announcing the establishment of a public university in the Savannah Region.

Speaking during a thank-you tour in the region on Saturday, June 14, Mahama highlighted that the initiative aligns with the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s 2024 manifesto pledge to create public universities in all six newly established regions.

“I’m proud to announce that, in line with the NDC’s 2024 manifesto to establish a public university in each of the six new regions, a public university will be built right here in the Savannah Region,” he stated.

Government postpones implementation of GH¢1 ‘Dumsor Levy’

John Jinapor is the Minister of Energy John Jinapor is the Minister of Energy

Government has postponed the implementation of the GH¢1 “Dumsor Levy” to a later date.

The Spokesperson and Head of Communication, Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Republic of Ghana, Richmond Rockson, announced this in an X post on June 14, 2025.

He wrote, “The implementation date for the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141), which would have taken effect from Monday, 16th of June 2025,

has been postponed after consultations with stakeholders.”

This comes after the government had earlier noted that the collection of the levy will begin on June 16, 2025 – the opening of the second pricing window of the month.

“A new effective date will be communicated in due course,” he added.

The postponement has been confirmed in a statement by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Due to rising global tensions, oil prices surged on June 13, 2025, causing Oil Marketing Companies to hint at increasing the prices of petroleum products at the pumps on June 16, 2025.

President Mahama has therefore asked the minister to monitor the tensions to gauge their impact on Ghana’s gains in the oil sector.

It is, however, unclear what has triggered the government’s decision to postpone the levy.

President John Dramani Mahama has tasked the Ministers of Finance and Energy to closely monitor the ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran, citing concerns over potential hikes in global crude oil prices and their impact on Ghana’s economy.

Speaking during his thank-you tour of the Savannah Region on Saturday, June 14, he highlighted the importance of proactive measures to protect Ghana’s recent economic progress from external shocks.

“Today, I wish to reaffirm that our commitment to the people of the Savannah Region will never shake. Despite the progress we’ve made in stabilising the economy, Ghana is not immune to the shocks of global events,” he said.

“I have instructed the Ministers of Finance and Energy to keep a close eye on the developments and model the possible impact on our petroleum prices. They must prepare appropriate measures to safeguard the gains we’ve made,” he added.

Tourism Minister urges DTI students to harness creativity for national development

0

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has challenged students of the Design and Technology Institute (DTI) to harness their creativity and technical skills to transform society, urging them to “dream boldly” and make their mark in Ghana’s creative economy.

Addressing the students at the National Theatre ahead of DTI’s annual drama production Maria’s Love Story, Gomashie drew on her own experience in the arts to highlight the power of storytelling, design, and cultural expression in shaping national identity and development.

“Don’t limit yourselves,” she urged. “Challenge your imagination and use every opportunity to grow.”

She commended President John Dramani Mahama for appointing professionals from the creative arts into leadership roles, adding that national progress depends on how society values its artists and creators.

“If this country is going to do well, it must respect those of us who create, Our culture, which fuels tourism, is shaped by storytellers, painters, poets, and artisans.”

Describing DTI students as privileged, the Minister reminded them of their duty to use their education for the benefit of others.

“You have something many children in the country do not have. If you don’t make it count, then you have shortchanged Miss Constance Swaniker and all those investing in your future,” she said, referring to the institute’s founder.

‘We Need Time to Go Through This’

0

According to a report by Myjoyonline, The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has postponed his decision on a motion filed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, seeking to overturn an earlier ruling by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor.

The motion concerns allegations of mass dismissals of public appointees following the current government’s assumption of power after the National Democratic Congress’ victory in the December 2024 elections.

In March, Bernard Ahiafor blocked a parliamentary inquiry into the dismissals, citing the sub judice rule due to a pending court case, Henry Nana Boakye v. Attorney-General.

However, Afenyo-Markin argued that the ruling misapplied the sub judice principle, restricting Parliament’s constitutional oversight functions unnecessarily.

He cited the Supreme Court’s May 2025 ruling in Vincent Ekow Assafuah v. Attorney-General, which affirmed that constitutional bodies could proceed with their duties unless explicitly restrained by the courts.

Afenyo-Markin further referenced a 2012 ruling by then-Speaker Joyce Bamford-Addo that allowed parliamentary discussions on matters even when court cases were ongoing, warning that allowing litigation to halt parliamentary probes could create a dangerous precedent.

Speaker Bagbin, while announcing the deferment on June 13, stressed the need to thoroughly examine the conflicting legal precedents.

“It’s important for us to take time to go through this,” he stated, acknowledging the complexity of balancing judicial decisions with parliamentary duties.

The Speaker’s ruling will be delivered at a later date, leaving the future of parliamentary scrutiny into the alleged dismissals unresolved for now.

The use of honorary doctorates and professorships is not only deceitful but unethical.

The practice undermines the credibility of the higher education system and devalues the significance of earned doctoral degrees and academic promotions.

Although many believe that the practice is common among politicians, business people and other public figures, it is not uncommon to find people holding onto titles they have not truly earned even in our communities.

Sometimes not out of pride but from a deeper place of disappointment or unfulfilled dreams. Many did not get into the programmes they worked hard for, or life simply took an unexpected turn. Instead of processing that loss, some hold on to an image of who they want to become.

When I was in the service, we would often arrest people in full uniform pretending to be part of the service when they were not. It was shocking, but it also revealed how deeply some people crave recognition, structure or status they feel they missed out on.

This is not just about ego. It is about identity, self-worth, and often silent grief. Pretending becomes a coping mechanism, a way to still feel seen, respected or valued.

We need more open conversations about failure, redirection and healing. Educational systems and communities should normalise changing paths and support those facing career disappointment.

Access to counselling, mentorship and mental health resources can help people process these challenges and rediscover purpose without clinging to false identities.

And for those who have not yet made it, it is important to encourage such people to know that their journey is not over. They do not have to measure their worth by a title or compare their path to someone else’s timeline.

We do not need to only name and shame but find a way to let such people know that their value is not in a title. It is in their truth, growth and the impact they make.

Charterhouse deserves applause for TGMA efforts despite challenges – Nana Poku Ashis

Nana Poku Ashis is an artiste manager and entertainment pundit Nana Poku Ashis is an artiste manager and entertainment pundit

Artiste manager and entertainment pundit, Nana Poku Ashis, has come to the defence of Charterhouse, organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), saying they deserve commendation for their consistent efforts despite limited resources and lack of government support.

Speaking during an X Space hosted by GhanaWeb on June 13, 2025, Ashis highlighted the immense pressure and sacrifices Charterhouse makes each year to deliver a world-class music awards event with minimal financial backing.

“We need to applaud Charterhouse for whatever they do and however it comes out. This is a privately-owned organisation with its own auditorium, no government backing, and they still go out to find their own sponsors,” he explained.

Comparing the TGMAs to global platforms like the BET Awards, Ashis noted the differences in resources.

“BET has huge brand sponsors with the financial muscle to give every artiste the room to maneuver. Charterhouse doesn’t have that kind of muscle,” he added.

The seasoned industry player also shed light on the behind-the-scenes challenges, including tight rehearsal windows and budget constraints.

“It takes two days to prepare everybody you see on that stage. Why? Because we don’t have the money to rent the auditorium and put generators on for a week. If they try that, by the day of the event, their money will run out,” he said.

Ashis didn’t shy away from calling out artistes as well, citing issues with punctuality and rehearsal discipline.

“An artist will not even come for rehearsals, but wants to perform. So, you cannot bash Charterhouse, they are doing their best,” he stressed.

While acknowledging that there is room for improvement, Ashis urged Ghanaians to appreciate the effort that goes into staging the TGMAs every year.

“It is not easy. I organise events, and I know how it is. You have to shave off a lot of your plans and make do with what’s available.”

His comments come amid ongoing conversations about the quality and future of Ghana’s premier music awards scheme.

Ashaiman NDC In Shock As Chairman Shaddad Jallo Dies Suddenly

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has lost a key grassroots figure. Shaddad Umar Jallo, the Ashaiman Constituency Chairman and a prominent member of the party’s National Zongo Caucus Coordinating Team, has died.

He reportedly passed away on Saturday afternoon, June 14, 2025, at East Legon after suddenly complaining of ill health. While the exact cause of death is yet to be officially confirmed, close family sources suspect high blood pressure may have been a contributing factor.

Jallo, who was serving his second term as constituency chairman, played a pivotal role in the NDC’s 2024 electoral campaign. He was instrumental in drastically reducing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vote share in Ashaiman, almost halving their 2020 performance.

Beyond Ashaiman, Jallo traveled extensively as part of the National Zongo Caucus coordinating team, helping galvanize support for the NDC across key communities nationwide.

However, his final days were reportedly clouded by disappointments. A close family member, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed, “Shaddad Umar Jallo died an unhappy man. Despite his sacrifices to return the party to power, he regretted no one from Ashaiman Constituency has received any significant appointment in the Mahama led administration despite promises prior to the elections. “He spoke of that pain often”, the source iterated.

JoyNews can confirm that his body has been transported to Akatamanso in the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency. Burial arrangements are underway, with interment scheduled for 9:AM Sunday, June 15, 2025, in accordance with Islamic rites.

He left behind a wife and 8 children.

Beautiful Church Outfits That Balance Style And Modesty

0

Every stylish woman knows that dressing for church is more than just putting on clothes—it’s about honouring the moment with grace, dignity, and a touch of elegance. In today’s fashion-forward world, the challenge isn’t just finding something to wear; it’s choosing pieces that beautifully blend modesty with sophistication. Thankfully, modern designers and skilled tailors are crafting outfits that strike the perfect harmony between spiritual decency and refined style.

The beauty of a well-put-together church outfit is in its silent confidence. It doesn’t scream for attention, yet it turns heads with quiet elegance. Flowing midi gowns with fitted bodices and subtle flare make a stunning choice, offering coverage and comfort while accentuating a woman’s natural beauty. High necklines, long sleeves, and rich fabrics like brocade, chiffon, or silk crepe lend a noble finish that feels right at home in a place of worship.

Modern Ankara prints, when tailored thoughtfully, deliver colour and culture without compromising the sacred setting. A beautifully structured gown in soft pastels or deep jewel tones can carry both fashion and reverence. Clean lines, defined waistlines, and soft pleats add charm, while maintaining a ladylike presence. These outfits don’t demand attention—they command it, quietly.

The secret lies in silhouettes that celebrate femininity without revealing too much. A-line gowns, tailored peplum blouses with matching skirts, and softly draped Bubu styles all deliver modest appeal with fashionable flair. When paired with classy accessories—minimalist earrings, structured handbags, and sleek heels—the entire look feels elevated yet appropriate.

Even more beautiful is the way today’s women are styling these pieces with personal meaning. A delicate lace trim around the neckline, a beaded collar, or a satin belt tied just so—each detail becomes a quiet expression of individuality. In a world obsessed with loud trends, modesty becomes a bold fashion statement in itself.

DCU’s New Wonder Woman Is Still Shrouded in Mystery – Here’s Everything We Know So Far

0

DC Comics is typically defined by the trinity of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. James Gunn‘s Superman will kick off the DCU, and My Adventures with Superman will return for a third season. Not only will Matt Reeves’ Batman franchise continue in The Batman Part II, but the DCU will get its own Batman solo film with The Brave and the Bold. This also doesn’t count spin-off projects like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Clayface. Between the cancellation of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3, which would have featured Gal Gadot returning, and the news that the planned Wonder Woman video game was canceled back in February 2025, it was a hard time to be a Wonder Woman fan.

As part of his initial January 2023 DCU slate announcement, James Gunn confirmed an Amazon-centric series for HBO titled Paradise Lost, but that series is notably a prequel without Wonder Woman. Thankfully, fans have something to look forward to as James Gunn confirmed that a Wonder Woman film is in development at DC Studios. Even though there is little information at the moment, there are some key details that we do know about the DCU’s Wonder Woman.

Gal Gadot Will Not Return as Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.

Despite no official confirmation, it is nearly certain that when Wonder Woman does appear in the DCU, she will not be played by Gal Gadot. Gadot initially teased that she would be returning as Wonder Woman in the DCU early on, but she and James Gunn have largely gone quiet on that front. This also means that Wonder Woman 3 is not happening. Despite its previous announcement, the movie was canceled in December 2022.

The DCU’s ‘Wonder Woman’ Is in the Early Stages of Development

Wonder Woman

James Gunn confirmed that DC Studios was working on a new Wonder Woman film on Jun. 10, 2025, in a profile on Superman for Entertainment Weekly. Gunn said the script was being worked on, but did not reveal who was attached to write it. No further details about the plot or the general direction for the DCU’s Wonder Woman have been given. The film is in the earliest stages of development, not even having a director set or a release date set. Gal Gadot not returning to play Wonder Woman also opens the door for the character to be recast.

Adria Arjona, best known for her roles in Andor and Hit Man, is a popular fan choice to play the role. For a decade, Alexandra Daddario has been a popular fan choice for Wonder Woman. Similarly, Grace Caroline Currey, who previously played Mary Bromfield in the DCEU’s Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods has also expressed interest in moving to the DCU and is open to the idea of playing Wonder Woman. Casting the DCU’s Wonder Woman will likely be one of the most sought-after roles in Hollywood.

‘Paradise Lost’ Is a Prequel Series for Wonder Woman

In January 2023, just one month after Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 was canceled, James Gunn announced a slate of DC projects that were in development that would make up what he called Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters. It featured projects centered on characters ranging from Superman to The Authority to Swamp Thing and Booster Gold. Despite the subtitle of this chapter having “gods” in it, it took two and a half years for a project centered around the demigoddess Wonder Woman to be announced.

There was, however, an HBO series announced called Paradise Lost. Described as being inspired by Game of Thrones, the series was announced as a prequel series set before the birth of Wonder Woman and would center on the scheming and power struggles on the all-female island of Themyscira. Not only is the title a reference to John Milton’s poem of the same name, but it also seems to draw inspiration from the 2001 comic arc “Paradise Island Lost,” by Phil Jimenez and George Pérez, about a civil war on Themyscira. Yet that storyline was notably set in the modern era, with Wonder Woman actively participating.

As of this writing, no showrunners have been attached to the series, with no indication of when the series will debut on HBO. The same day that Gunn announced a Wonder Woman film, he confirmed that Paradise Lost was still developing, but the project was moving slowly. The Wonder Woman film theoretically ties into Paradise Lost, though Gunn’s comments imply they are two projects with different creative teams, similar to Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Wonder Woman and the Amazons Were Teased in ‘Creature Commandos’

Circe and the Sons of Themyscira in Creature Commandos (2024)
Max

The seeds for Paradise Lost and the potential Wonder Woman film might have been planted in the DCU’s first proper entry, the animated series Creature Commandos. Within the opening seconds of the episode, the series establishes the villain Circe (Anya Chalotra), a rogue Amazonian sorceress who seeks to become the ruler of Themyscira. A news anchor drops the line that Themyscira, sometimes called Paradise Island, is seemingly a mythical land, meaning both it and the Amazons are a fable to the citizens of the DCU. This suggests that Wonder Woman might not be active yet in the DCU, or if she is, that people don’t know much about her backstory or where she comes from.

Meanwhile, audiences did get their first glimpse of Wonder Woman, but not in the way anyone expected. In the fourth episode, Circe shows Amanda Waller a vision of the future that will come to pass, where Princess Rostovic declares war on the world. Waller sees various DC heroes killed. Some pre-established characters or heroes audiences know are already coming, like David Corenswet’s Superman, John Cena’s Peacemaker, Milly Alcock’s Supergirl, and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, to name a few. However, one of the heroes killed on a spike is none other than Wonder Woman. This is the DCU’s first introduction to Wonder Woman in the DCU, hinting at larger things to come.

Creature Commandos aired in December 2024, six months before the Wonder Woman film was announced to be in development. With Gunn, the creator of Creature Commandos, it gives a good insight into how the DCU might approach Wonder Woman. Circe is one of Wonder Woman’s most notable foes, and with her alive and in A.R.G.U.S. custody, she could potentially return in Wonder Woman and maybe play a role in the Paradise Lost prequel.

Ghana validates first National E-Commerce Strategy

0

Accra, June 14, GNA – The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), has validated Ghana’s first National E-Commerce Strategy.

The validation, which was done at a stakeholder workshop in Accra on Thursday, marks a major milestone in the country’s efforts to use digital trade for inclusive economic growth and transformation.

The event brought together senior government officials, private sector actors, academia, civil society organisations, and development partners to review and endorse the draft strategy, which outlines key actions to address structural and trade-related barriers in Ghana’s e-commerce space.

A joint press release by the Ministry and UNCTAD explained that the strategy sought to empower micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), promote decent job creation, enhance social inclusion, and support economic diversification through a more vibrant and inclusive digital economy.

The initiative follows an eTrade Readiness Assessment (eT Ready) conducted by UNCTAD in response to a 2023 request by the Ministry.

The assessment, published in November 2023, highlighted policy gaps and development opportunities in Ghana’s e-commerce ecosystem.

The Ministry subsequently requested UNCTAD’s technical assistance in March 2024 to develop a comprehensive national e-commerce roadmap.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr Sampson Ahi, the Deputy Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, said the strategy was both ambitious and practical, aiming to build trust in the digital space, improve logistics and digital payment systems, support MSMEs, and ensure equitable access for women and rural communities.

“It is the beginning of a coordinated national effort to make e-commerce work for all Ghanaians,” he added.

As part of the implementation efforts, the Ministry, in collaboration with its partners, is establishing an E-Commerce and Digital Trade National Steering Committee.

The multi-stakeholder body, comprising representatives from the public and private sectors, academia and civil society, will oversee the implementation and ensure policy coherence across sectors.

UNCTAD’s support for the strategy falls under a broader joint UN programme aimed at leveraging digital ecosystems to enhance MSME productivity.

The programme is jointly implemented with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and coordinated by the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (UNRCO).

The Joint SDG Fund Digital Transformation Round (2023) funds it.

The draft strategy was shaped through a participatory process, including national dialogues in June 2024 and extensive stakeholder consultations through October and November.

The process strengthened inter-ministerial coordination and deepened public-private

engagement in Ghana’s digital economy discourse.

Mr Torbjörn Fredriksson, Head of the E-Commerce and Digital Economy Branch at UNCTAD, lauded Ghana’s commitment to building an inclusive and forward-looking digital economy.

“UNCTAD is proud to support this process, which not only aligns with national development goals but also strengthens the digital capabilities of MSMEs as engines of growth and job creation,” he added.

The validation of the National E-Commerce Strategy marks a pivotal step in positioning the country to capitalise on opportunities within the global digital economy.

Minority accuses President of “populist decision” for showing clemency to defaulting radio stations

0

By Godwill Arthur- Mensah/ Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, June 13, GNA-The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament has described the President’s decision to pardon 64 radio stations for various regulatory breaches as “populist” and called for its reversal.

This follows the President’s directive to the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Innovation, Sam Nartey George, on Thursday, June 12, to liaise with the National Communications Authority (NCA) to immediately restore the broadcast of the radio stations affected by the Regulator’s action.

Mr Charles Asuako Owiredu, the NPP Member of Parliament for Abirem, told the Parliamentary Press Corps at Parliament House.

The lawmaker, also the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Communications and Information Committee, described the President’s action as a “brazen assault on the independence of regulatory institution and a dangerous precedent that threatened the very foundations of the country’s constitutional democracy.”

“Today’s event represents more than a disagreement over media policy. They constitute a fundamental breach of the separation of powers that our constitution carefully establishes to prevent exactly this type of executive overreach,” the legislator pointed out.

The Minority Caucus argued that the NCA’s decision to close the radio stations was within its express statutory mandate for enforcing the Electronic Communications Act.

“These were not arbitrary decisions but legally required responses to stations operating without valid authorizations, some for years.

“Within hours the President issued a directive countermanding this lawful regulatory action.

“The president has effectively declared that regulatory law is optional when it conflicts with his political preferences,” Mr Owiredu stated.

“When we allow president to override statutory institutions based on policy preferences, we replace the rule of law with that of the rule of men. The question before us is simple, will you defend the Constitution, or will we watch silently as executive power devours the independence of our institutions? Mr Owiredu  queried.

Ghana to host historic youth festival in August

0

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Ayariga, has announced that Ghana will for the first time, host a national Ghana Youth Festival in August to coincide with International Youth Day on August 12.

Speaking in an interview on Kasapa FM, Mr. Ayariga disclosed that the NYA is taking a bold step to launch this landmark initiative aimed at addressing the most pressing issues facing the Ghanaian youth today.

“It is not just about training and jobs, but also about the mental and emotional well-being of our youth,” he stated.

The Ghana Youth Festival will feature a series of conferences, forums, and campaigns focusing on mental health, drug abuse, unemployment, and other socio-economic challenges hindering the progress and productivity of young people across the country.

A special emphasis will be placed on mental health, which Mr. Osman Ayariga described as a critical foundation for youth development.

“If the mental health of our youth is not stable, then providing jobs and training alone will not yield the needed results,” he stressed.

The festival will also include a national street campaign against drug abuse, which has become a growing concern among Ghanaian youth.

Topics such as youth entrepreneurship, digital literacy, leadership, and civic responsibility will also be explored during the week-long event.

To cap off the festival, youth-centered entertainment and recreational activities will be organised to ensure that young people are not only engaged intellectually but also celebrated and empowered in a holistic way.

“This is the first time in our history that the NYA is organising something of this magnitude for the youth,” Mr. Ayariga added, emphasising that the goal is to inspire change, build resilience, and promote nationwide youth inclusion.

As part of the long-term plan, Osman Ayariga also disclosed that a youth fellowship programme would follow in October, offering young people further opportunities to learn, connect, and lead.

The Ghana Youth Festival is expected to become an annual platform to unite the country’s youth, amplify their voices, and push for policies and interventions that will shape a more promising future.

Watch as soldiers receive plaudits online for helping students dress properly and decently

A video has surfaced online showing three uniformed military men assisting male students of an unidentified school in dressing more appropriately.

In the video, sighted by GhanaWeb and posted by Byte Samuel on Facebook on June 13, 2025, six male students were stopped by the military personnel at Osu, instructing them to pull up their shorts to their navels — a practice that was once the norm.

Over time, however, peer pressure and influences from Western fashion trends have led many young men to wear their trousers, shorts, and other pants lower on their waists, often exposing parts of their bodies.

In the video, the students obediently complied as the military personnel continued their discipline.

Another student was also captured in the video having his hair neatly brushed by one of the uniformed soldiers.

The actions of the military men drew attention from onlookers and passersby, who praised them for instilling discipline in the students.

Netizens who watched the video also took the opportunity to commend the act, sharing their personal experiences with military discipline, which they said had helped instill a sense of order and responsibility in their lives.

Civil Aviation courts armwrestling for active and healthy lifestyle amongst staff

Representatives from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority with GAF executives Representatives from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority with GAF executives

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), in a strategic engagement with the leadership of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), has expressed strong interest in exploring ways to promote Armwrestling within its institution and to use the sport as a tool for an active and healthy lifestyle amongst its staff.

The meeting, held in Accra, forms part of GAF’s broader outreach to corporate bodies aimed at strengthening long-lasting partnerships for future benefits and to encourage participation in Armwrestling by many Ghanaians.

Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, who led the delegation, revealed the federation’s vision, recent achievements, and the support armwrestling brings on board as one of the fastest-growing sports on the continent.

He stressed the need for partnerships with reputable institutions like the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority to drive sports development for a healthy lifestyle for the working group, and also provide opportunities for active youth.

Osei Asibey noted that the Federation’s aim is not only to win medals but also to use Armwrestling as a tool for youth empowerment, discipline, and national pride.

“Armwrestling is a sport of choice. During the 2023 Africa Games, we managed to scoop a total of 41 medals out of the total 69 won by Team Ghana. This tells how far we have come and what we are aiming to achieve,” he said.

He formally announced Ghana’s participation in the forthcoming Africa Armwrestling Championship in Nigeria, where the Golden Arms will participate as the defending champions, having emerged the overall winners of the last edition of the Africa Armwrestling Championship, sweeping 132 medals to top the table.

Stephen Wilfred Arthur, Director-General of Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, commended the Ghana Armwrestling Federation for the effort to always explore key areas to develop the sport.

He affirmed the Authority’s keen interest in supporting sports development and welcomed the opportunity to explore meaningful partnerships with GAF. He revealed that the GCAA plans to encourage about 60% of their youthful staff to stay active by playing Armwrestling during breaks and after work.

The GCAA will introduce a yearly Aviation Sports Festival, which will feature Armwrestling as one of the key disciplines.

The initiative, he explained, would promote wellness, teamwork, and sporting excellence within the aviation space and beyond.

Arthur assured the delegation of a fruitful partnership, highlighting the Authority’s readiness to contribute to the growth of the sport.

Present at the meeting from the Ghana Armwrestling Federation were Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum, Vice President, Jesse Adjepong, Secretary General, Godfrey William Amarteifio, board member and Madam Phillipina Frimpong, administrator of GAF.

Also from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority were Ebenezer Sagoe, Director of HR, Eric Mireku Amaning, Head of Corporate Communications and other senior management.

Drone surveillance rolled out to tackle crime

0

The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has announced a new government-backed initiative to combat rising crime and conflict in the region through the deployment of drone and satellite imaging technologies.

Speaking at the Regional Security Resilience and Peace Building Training and Education Centre in Nangodi, Nabdam District on Friday, June 14, he revealed that the introduction of high-resolution drones and surveillance cameras will enhance real-time monitoring of conflict-prone zones and support swift identification of armed individuals and criminal activity.

“We’ve increased the number of drones and cameras in the region and will continue to expand coverage. For security reasons, I won’t provide exact figures, but the strategy is clear: anyone hiding and planning nocturnal activities will be detected. With drones and planted cameras, whether the perpetrators are physically seen or not, once a crime is committed, they will be captured on video.”

He emphasised that these surveillance tools would provide indisputable evidence, aiding the justice system in prosecuting offenders effectively.

“One of the main challenges in prosecuting criminals has been the lack of evidence,” he noted. “Now, with visual proof from drones and cameras, there will be no loophole for suspects to escape justice. We will present concrete, video-based evidence in court to ensure convictions.”

The Regional Minister added that this technological intervention forms part of a broader regional security strategy aimed at restoring calm to communities grappling with instability in recent years.

“The current method of maintaining peace hasn’t been the most effective. We often react to violence after it erupts. The new approach is to prevent, detect and stop crimes before they occur. Those who are behind the unrest should be warned: we are watching, and anyone caught inciting or committing violence will face the full force of the law.” He explained.

Mr. Atanga also issued a stern warning to individuals who attempt to interfere with the legal process by demanding the release of arrested suspects.

“This time, it’s not a joke. No one should come and plead for the release of anyone caught breaking the law. Let it be clear we are taking these steps seriously, and no effort will be spared in prosecuting troublemakers,” He stated.

The Death of Alfred Is the Best Thing to Happen to Batman (& I Hope He Stays Dead)

0

Batman is a legend, and that legend has only grown in the years since his debut. Batman is everyone’s favorite superhero, whether they like or not. There’s something about the Caped Crusader that just appeals to everyone. Batman is not a perfect character, but even his imperfections are an important part of what makes him great. Batman also has the best supporting cast in comics, introducing readers to multiple layered characters that have become legends in their own right. Alfred Pennyworth is such a character. Alfred is Batman’s best partner, and always has been, for a variety of reasons. He’s such an amazing character, and has become the quintessential superhero butler, the quiet core of everything that the hero needs to survive. That’s why it was such a surprise that he was killed in “City of Bane,” the final part of Tom King’s controversial Batman run.

The loss of Alfred is one of the most grievous that readers have ever seen Batman endure. While Alfred does still appear in various comics, he’s been dead in the main universe for years now. No one has tried to put him in a Lazarus Pit, or plucked his soul from the ether and put it into a clone body. We haven’t gotten an alternate universe Alfred showing up and taking the slain Alfred’s place. There have been a few fakeouts, obviously, but Alfred has stayed gone. While there are plenty of fans who would love to see Alfred come back, it’s better for the Batman comics that Alfred is gone and it should stay that way.

Alfred’s Death Has Changed the Way Batman Comics Work

Batman crying while holding the dead Alfred

The death of Alfred took a crucial part of Batman stories away. Alfred was the one in background doing all of the dirty work. He was Batman’s keeper in a lot of ways. He fed him, cleaned up after him, and ran his household. He also sewed up his wounds, acted as a sounding board, and worked to make sure Batman didn’t lose the humans parts of the world that make life worth living. Without Alfred, the Bat-Family has had to change. There’s no kindly father figure for everyone around making sure the messes got cleaned up. The quiet affection of Alfred is missing from their lives. There’s no one to sew up the wounds of the Bat-Family, and there was no one to temper Batman’s worst impulses. This has forced the characters to work in different ways, expanding the focus of the stories, and working in new character relationships. Suddenly, when Batman loses it on someone, there’s no one there to smooth everything over. There’s no one there to show Batman the error of his ways. Batman actually has to fix his own problems. He has to use the lessons that Alfred taught him, and actually grow as a character. Alfred’s death was a tragedy, but it was also the best thing that happened to the Bat-Family. Just look at the effect it had on Nightwing. Dick Grayson has stepped up in a way that he never had before, and much of it is thanks to his need to pay homage to one of the men who raised him. The billions Alfred left him helped, obviously, but Dick has worked harder than ever to live up to the man that Alfred was — someone who did everything he could to solve the problems that he could solve. Alfred’s spirit has informed Nightwing and his appearances in every book he’s been in. Nightwing is probably the best the character has ever been right now, and Alfred’s death was a huge part of that. It opened all of the doors.

Another big change has been the relationship between Batman and Damian Wayne. Alfred was the one who doted on Damian, and gave him the paternal love and affection that was hard for Batman. Without Alfred, Batman has had to step up and actually father his son. The latest volume of Batman and Robin has been so good because now Batman has to actually be in Damian’s life as Bruce Wayne. The two of them have to work their problems out for themselves, instead of having Alfred there to solve every problem. It often feels like the two of them are closer than ever, and it’s the best their relationship has been. That’s not to say that Batman and Damian’s wouldn’t have kept getting better if Alfred was still around, or that Nightwing wouldn’t have been as important as he’s been in the last few years if Bane had never broken Alfred’s neck. However, it’s made it so all of these changes have to be made, and we got to see it. We got to see the mourning and the immediate effects of the event, and watch the characters go through their grief, and grow. These changes have made the Batman books the best they’ve been in years.

The Death of Alfred Is Too Crucial to Undo

Alfred Talks to Bruce Wayne

I think that every Batman fan misses Alfred. Sure, we’ve gotten multiple other versions of Alfred to scratch our Alfred itch, but there’s still an Alfred sized hole missing from the Batman mythos. However, I wouldn’t want to see Alfred come back at this point whatsoever. The impact of his death has been too important and transformative, and undoing would do a massive amount of damage, because most of the toys would be put back in the box.

This has always been one of the biggest problems with comics — this need to erase character development so that casual fans can jump in easier. The fact that DC hasn’t done it yet (you all know Marvel would have undid it within five years and you’re lying to yourself if you say otherwise) is a honestly a huge accomplishment. Alfred’s death has become a formative moment in the history of the Dark Knight, and the best thing to do is to let it stand. There’s a million different Batman stories being told at any time. Most of them have Alfred. There’s no need to bring Alfred back in the present day DC Multiverse.

What do you think about Alfred’s death? Sound off in the comments below.

He Should Have Been Gone

0

According to a report by Citinewsroom, Richard Ahiagbah, Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for the resignation of Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, condemning his mishandling of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) strike.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, Ahiagbah voiced his frustration with Akandoh’s response to the strike. “He should have been gone. He must go.

He must go home leave the Ministry and go home. Completely unacceptable behaviour,” he stated.

Ahiagbah further questioned Akandoh’s competence, recalling his time as Ranking Member on the Health Committee.

He emphasized the minister’s contradictory actions, referencing how Akandoh had previously criticized his predecessor for similar issues but failed to manage the recent crisis effectively.

The strike, which disrupted healthcare services nationwide, was called off on June 13 after intense negotiations led by Parliament’s Health Committee.

Ahiagbah pointed out that Akandoh had received early warnings about the issue but failed to act on them.

“He assured nurses that their concerns would be addressed in the 2025 Budget, but he didn’t follow through,” he said.

Ahiagbah also criticized the allocation of funds, suggesting the government had “found all the fiscal space to allocate GH¢2.7 billion for compensation at the Jubilee House” while neglecting healthcare.

He was particularly scathing of Akandoh’s suggestion to recall retired nurses, calling it “reckless and insensitive.”

“People died because of his negligence. For that reason, he must be gone,” Ahiagbah concluded.

Ashaiman NDC in shock as chairman Shaddad Jallo dies

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ashaiman Chairman and member of the party’s National Zongo Caucus Coordinating Team, Shaddad Umar Jallo, has died.

Despite his sacrifices to return the party to power, he regretted that no one from Ashaiman Constituency has received any significant appointment in the Mahama-led administration despite promises prior to the elections. He spoke of that pain often”, the source iterated.

JoyNews can confirm that his body has been transported to Akatamanso in the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency.

Burial arrangements are underway, with interment scheduled for 9:00 am Sunday, June 15, 2025, in accordance with Islamic rites.

He left behind a wife and 8 children.

GRA Postpones Implementation of Energy Sector Levy Amid Industry Concerns

0

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced a postponement of the implementation date for the Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy (ESSDRL), originally scheduled to take effect on June 16, 2025. This decision follows consultations with stakeholders, including the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), who raised concerns about the timing and potential impact on fuel prices and consumer burden.

The levy, part of government measures to settle mounting debts in the energy sector, was initially set to increase the ESSDRL for selected petroleum products. However, after discussions with industry leaders, the GRA confirmed that a new implementation date has been agreed upon. The revised timeline aims to address industry concerns and ensure a smooth transition.

Under the new directive, the ESSDRL rates for various petroleum products are as follows:

* Motor Spirit (Super Petrol): from Ghc0.95 to Ghc1.95
* AGO/Diesel and Marine Gas Oil (Foreign): from Ghc0.93 to Ghc1.93
* Marine Gas Oil (Local): from Ghc0.03 to Ghc0.23
* Heavy Fuel Oil (Residual Fuel Oil – RFO): from Ghc0.04 to Ghc0.24
* Partially Refined Oil (Naphtha): from Ghc0.95 to Ghc1.95
* Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): remains unchanged at Ghc0.73

The new rates will apply to all petroleum products not lifted before the revised implementation date. Transitional arrangements have been put in place:

* Products lifted by a Petroleum Product Marketing Company (PPMC) before the revised date will still be subject to the old levy rates.
* Any “cash-and-carry” transactions by PPMCs, for which products are lifted on or after the revised date, will be subject to the new rates.

Commissioner-General of the GRA, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, signed the directive and urged all ports and fuel stations to strictly comply with the new implementation schedule. The GRA emphasized that the postponement reflects a commitment to stakeholder engagement and a balanced approach to fiscal policy.

Mahama’s clemency for radio stations was pure gimmick – Egyapa Mercer

0

The former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has described President John Mahama’s recent clemency for the 64 radio stations which were recently shut down by the National Communication Authority (NCA) as a public relations stunt, lacking genuine commitment to press freedom.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, June 14, Mr. Mercer said the move was more about optics than substance.

“Pure PR, nothing else,” he asserted.

“Because knowing how our governance system works, I’m not so sure the minister [Samuel Nartey George], especially with respect to the sensitivity of radio station ownership and what has transpired in the past, would take this step without recourse to the presidency.”

He further suggested that President Mahama’s involvement in the matter appeared to be choreographed, aimed at portraying a tolerant image.

“To confirm that indeed, this is nothing but to throw dust in the eyes of the public that Mr. Mahama, the President, is some tolerant president, he is in favour of press freedom… it’s all theatrics and no more,” he said.

Mr. Mercer also disputed claims that only NDC-aligned stations were affected by regulatory closures in 2017, citing the shutdown of First Deputy Speaker Joe Osei Owusu’s station as an example.

His comment comes after President Mahama directed the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, to collaborate with the NCA to restore the affected stations without delay, shortly after it was shut down.

In a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President underscored the need to balance regulatory compliance with media freedom.

The directive followed a swift enforcement exercise by the NCA, which saw stations including Happy FM, Asaase Radio, and Wontumi FM taken off air for violating provisions of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991).

The NCA cited Regulations 54 and 56 and conditions attached to their authorisations as grounds for the shutdown.

The President’s statement emphasised that forcing media houses off-air while awaiting regularisation could stifle press freedom in a democratic society.

He also instructed the Communications Ministry to work with the NCA to set a “reasonable timeframe” for the affected stations to rectify their status.

On the back of this, the Communications Minister announced that the government has granted a 30-day grace period to radio stations shut down by the NCA, giving them time to rectify regulatory breaches and resume operations.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, June 12, Mr. George said the decision followed a directive from President John Mahama earlier in the day, instructing the ministry and the NCA to collaborate in restoring services to the affected media houses.

“Mr. Speaker, a few minutes ago, His Excellency John Mahama directed that the Ministry work with the regulator at the NCA to allow all the affected radio stations some additional time to correct the identified breaches within a defined time frame,” the minister said.

He added that stations that fail to regularise their authorisations within the 30-day period would face formal revocation in accordance with existing regulations.

However, the Minister said as part of what the government calls a more compassionate and democratic approach, all fines that would have been imposed on the stations have been waived.

The Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Felix Gyamfi, has outlined several strict measures his office has implemented to eliminate ghost names from the National Service Scheme and close loopholes that allow individuals to exploit the system for financial gain.

Speaking on TV3’s The Keypoints on Saturday, June 14, 2025, Felix Gyamfi stated that students applying for National Service from unaccredited tertiary institutions will not be permitted to participate in the scheme.

“If you attend the university and it’s not properly accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), you cannot do National Service. If your accreditation status is not properly certified by the GTEC, you cannot come and do National Service,” he said.

Gyamfi further stated that the number of eligible service personnel enrolling in 2025 will be significantly reduced.

He explained that the NSA will implement administrative procedures to help their system filter out individuals whose tertiary institutions are unaccredited, preventing them from enrolling in the scheme.

“This year, our numbers are going to reduce drastically because we are applying the administrative procedures and measures to check and filter all these things out,” he added.

He further noted that individuals who do not have Ghana Cards will not be permitted to undertake their National Service.

“Now, if you’re a National Service person this year and you do not have Ghana Card, you are not going to be able to do National Service because before you even have access to fill out your enrolment form, you have to be verified using the Ghana Card and no other form of identification. When you get access to the form and you come and register with us at National Service, you must be verified,” he added.

He continued to say that; “Every month, you are going to be verified so, before you start and finish your National Service, you would have been verified 15 times using the Ghana Card. You will not be allowed to be validated for payment anywhere else apart from our office. So, our biometric verification system only works in our office and if you take it out of our office, it will not work.”

Emphasising on more stricter measures, Gyamfi stated that processes are underway to integrate the Controller and Accountant General Department (CAGD) into their payment platforms.

This initiative, he said, aims to help eliminate individuals who are taking double salaries from their employers and the National Service.

“We are also integrating the Controller and Accounting General into our payment platforms so that what I mentioned earlier at the beginning of the discussion does not happen again.

“So, the beginning of National Service, when we have had all our payroll done, we’ll take it to the controlling accountant general and run through and make sure that we don’t have about 10,000 workers who are taking their salaries either as soldiers, teachers, whatever, and taking National Service. And that’s the money that we are collecting back,” he concluded.

His statement comes on the back of the NSS scandal involving some former officials who allegedly siphoned state funds using ghost names.

Thomas Partey refutes Black Stars captaincy controversy

0

Thomas Partey says there is no leadership tension within the squad Thomas Partey says there is no leadership tension within the squad

Midfielder Thomas Partey has downplayed suggestions of any internal conflict over the Black Stars captaincy, insisting the issue has been blown out of proportion by external voices.

The subject of who leads the senior national team has stirred public debate in recent months. While Partey wore the armband in the absence of long-time captain Andre Ayew, a shuffle in leadership during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers reignited the conversation.

With Partey sidelined, Mohammed Kudus was named captain for the double-header against Sudan. In the subsequent match, Jordan Ayew led the side, though Ghana failed to secure a win.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) later confirmed Jordan Ayew as the new substantive captain ahead of the resumption of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking to 3Sports, Partey addressed the speculation for the first time, saying there is no leadership tension within the squad.

“Personally, I’ve never thought of controlling or being the head of anything. I came to the Black Stars willingly. I want to be here because I have seen a lot of good players give everything for Ghana and enjoy it,” the 31-year-old said.

“When we switch from one captain to the other, it has to be smooth. I don’t know where the fight is coming from; I think it’s from outside. In the team, we don’t talk about any player or captaincy.”

Partey further stressed that the noise surrounding the captaincy has only created unnecessary pressure for the coaching staff and players.

“The problem is from outside, not inside, and then it becomes a problem for the coach because he gets asked about it, and the player also gets asked. Inside, there is nothing. Outside, everybody talks about it, and it becomes a problem,” he added.

The Black Stars will return to action in September for Matchday 7 and 8 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they’ll face Chad and Mali.

‘You have restored my faith in our democracy’ – Manasseh to Mahama for ending Zoomlion-YEA deal

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for taking decisive action by discontinuing the Zoomlion‑Youth Employment Agency (YEA) sanitation contract, saying it has rekindled his faith in Ghana’s democratic leadership.

In a heartfelt letter addressed to President Mahama, Manasseh detailed his 12‑year investigative journey uncovering corruption and impropriety under the longstanding Zoomlion contract signed in 2006.

He praised Mahama’s bold decision not to renew the deal and highlighted it as a rare moment of accountability by a civilian leader.

“Your decision to discontinue this contract has reinforced my long‑held faith in not giving up on a just and noble cause even if nobody else believes in it. It’s been 12 years fighting, and your action is the most appropriate response to those who asked why I would not give up and move on, when nobody was prepared to discontinue the contract.”

He continued: “In a significant way, you have restored my faith in our democracy.”

Manasseh’s open letter comes after President Mahama responded in a letter dated 11 June 2025, confirming that the expired contract will not be renewed. He pledged a full audit of recent payments and committed to a competitive procurement process for future sanitation services.

In response, Manasseh described Mahama’s move as one of the high points of his journalism career, recognising it as “one of the best pieces of news” he has witnessed.

He added that the action encourages investigative journalists and civic activists committed to exposing wrongdoing.

Manasseh further promised to monitor reforms, including better compensation for sweepers, decentralised contract management, and the cleanup of remaining questionable agreements such as the SML (Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited) contract.

‘We’ve pampered nurses, we shouldn’t complain when they’re biting’ – Franklin Cudjoe

0

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has described the politicisation of nursing and teacher training incentives as a misguided approach that has weakened the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s healthcare and education systems.

Speaking in the aftermath of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association’s (GRNMA) nationwide strike on Channel One TV‘s The  Big Issue on  Saturday June 14, he argued that successive governments have “pampered” trainee nurses for political gain rather than investing in structural improvements and long-term workforce development.

“How have we treated nurses even when they are training—we’ve pampered them. Haven’t we?” Cudjoe asked, referencing past political decisions to reinstate or cancel trainee allowances.

“Politically, one party says—John Mahama—that he is not going to pay any nurses allowance. The opposition at the time used it against him. And when they came, they started paying and rewarding these entities. I have never understood that game.”

Cudjoe lamented the use of training allowances as political bait, warning that such short-term populist policies divert funds that could be better used to properly equip and reward fully qualified professionals.

“The moment we do these shifty politics and think we can garner votes through these freebies to a section of the population that do not require it, that do not need it, we should not be crying now that they have come back biting at us,” he said.

He further criticised both major political parties for engaging in this form of vote-buying, arguing that the funds could have been reserved for qualified nurses “who actually go through the grind” and contribute meaningfully to the healthcare sector.

Cudjoe’s comments follow the GRNMA’s decision to suspend a nationwide strike that began on June 9, 2025. The strike, triggered by the government’s proposal to delay implementation of newly negotiated conditions of service until 2026, brought significant disruptions to public healthcare facilities, particularly in emergency and maternity wards.

Despite early deadlock between GRNMA, the Ministry of Health, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, growing public pressure pushed all parties back to the negotiation table. The strike was suspended on June 13 after the government gave fresh assurances to revisit the proposed timeline and continue discussions with the union.

The students were among a group of ten who were trying to cross the river when the canoe capsized midway, resulting in the deaths of seven students.

Three of the students managed to swim ashore, but the remaining seven were swept away by the current.

As of press time, five bodies have been recovered, and search efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining two.

According to reports gathered by Graphic Online, the students were members of the school’s cadet corps and were on their routine morning jogging exercise when the incident occurred.

When the group reached the riverbank, they reportedly saw a man crossing the river in a canoe and decided to join him to experience the ride. However, the canoe capsized soon after setting off.

The Police and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

Sikawura is seen here donating to the BECE candidates Sikawura is seen here donating to the BECE candidates

Ahafo Ano North Municipality students currently sitting for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) have received a powerful message of encouragement from local philanthropist Nicholas Asamoah Nikel, popularly known as “Sikawura”.

Following a tour of examination centres to motivate the candidates, “Sikawura” urged students to approach the exams with diligence, hope, and unwavering integrity.

“This is just the beginning,” Sikawura emphasised. “Believe in yourselves, trust what your teachers have taught you, and embrace the future with confidence. Remember, integrity and hard work are the keys to success”.

Drawing from his own experiences, Sikawura emphasised that the BECE is a fundamental beginning and there is greater hope for the future. He advised that this examination represents a foundational step in life, assuring that with hard work and dedication, there’s a much brighter and more promising path ahead.

Prior to the start of the exams, Sikawura, who is the CEO of Asikafoɔ Pub based in Tepa, demonstrated his commitment to supporting education by donating 1,000 mathematical sets to the final-year pupils across several schools within the municipality on Tuesday.

The donation spanned several schools, including Tepa Saviour JHS, Tepa Presby JHS, Methodist JHS, Anyinasuso D/A JHS, Anyinasuso Presby JHS, Anyinasuso Islamic JHS, and Fountain of Life International School.

He shared his personal story, recounting the challenges he faced as a student when even securing a basic math set was a struggle.

“I’ve been there before,” he said. “I know how it feels to be ill-equipped. I don’t want these pupils to go through a similar situation.”

According to him, his act of generosity was meant to ensure that students were well-equipped with the necessary tools for success.

Sikawura has also pledged to support brilliant but needy students from among the BECE candidates who gain admission into Senior High School, solidifying his belief in education as a transformative force.

The headmasters and headmistresses of the beneficiary schools expressed their sincere appreciation for Sikawura’s support. Isaac Asare Ayisi, Headmaster of Tepa Saviour JHS, assured that the math sets would be used effectively.

Faustina Dwiraa Boakye, Headmistress of Presby JHS, noted that the donation brought a sigh of relief to teachers, students, and parents, especially as some pupils were lacking the essential tools for the exam.

President Mahama announces 30,000-ton rice mill project in North East Region

President Mahama promises to construct a rice mill factory in the North East region President Mahama promises to construct a rice mill factory in the North East region

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his administration, in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), will establish a modern rice mill in Jadima, located in the Mamprugu Moagduri District of the North East Region.

The rice processing facility is expected to handle over 30,000 metric tonnes of locally grown rice every year and create more than 2,000 jobs, prioritising opportunities for women, children, and the youth.

Speaking at a durbar of Chiefs and People in Nalerigu as part of his Thank You Tour of the region, President Mahama described the project as a major step in transforming the region’s agricultural economy.

“This rice mill is not just a factory, it is a symbol of hope, a signal of change, and a tool for empowerment,” he stated. “We are moving from subsistence to sustainability, and from survival to prosperity.”

He emphasised that Ghana’s future in agriculture depends on commercial production and agro-industrial transformation, rather than small-scale farming alone.

“Our farmers work hard, but for too long, they’ve lacked the systems to add value to their produce. This facility will ensure their efforts are rewarded,” Mahama said.

“We will drastically reduce post-harvest losses, and more importantly, keep the profits here in Ghana.”

To ensure that the rice produced does not go to waste, the President revealed a strong partnership with the National Buffer Stock Company.

“I have instructed the Buffer Stock Company to purchase all the rice produced from this mill,” he announced. “We will pay for it and use it to feed our children in senior high schools across the country. This is how we create a complete local value chain, from the farmer’s field to the dining halls.”

President Mahama also touched on the project’s broader impact on the community.

“This will not only boost incomes for farmers but also improve livelihoods, reduce youth migration, and foster stability in this part of the country,” he said.

Wetin be di worst-case scenarios on Israel-Iran strikes?

0

For now di fighting between Israel and Iran dey restricted to di two nations. For United Nations and elsewhere many pipo dey calls for restraint.

But what if dem fall on deaf ears? What if di fighting escalate and expand?

Dis na just a few possible, worst-case scenarios.

What if e drag America inside

Upon say US dey deny say dia hand no dey, Iran believe say American forces endorse am and at least tacitly support Israel attacks.

Iran fit strike US targets across di Middle East – like dia special forces camps for Iraq, military bases for Gulf, and diplomatic missions for di region. Iran proxy forces – Hamas and Hezbollah – wey many dey feel say no too strong but dia supportive militias for Iraq still dey armed and dey intact.

US dey fear say dis kain attacks dey possible and so dem don withdraw some personnel. For dia public message, US warned Iran well-well of di consequences of any attack on American targets.

Wetin fit happun if dem kill American citizen, say, for Tel Aviv or elsewhere?

Donald Trump fit dey forced to act. Many pipo dey accuse Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu say im wan drag US inside dis mata to help am defeat Iran.

Military analysts say na only US get di bombers and bunker-busting bombs wey fit penetrate di deepest of Iranian nuclear facilities, especially for Fordow.

Trump bin promise im MAGA constituency say im no go start any so-called “forever wars” for Middle East. But equally many Republicans support both Israel goment and dia view say now na di time to seek regime change for Tehran.

But if America come become an active combatant, dat go represent a huge escalation wit a long, potentially devastating consequential tail.

What if e drag Gulf nations

If Iran fail to damage Israel well-protected military and oda targets, den dem fit always aim dia missiles at softer targets for Gulf, especially kontris wey Iran believe say dey help and assist dia enemies ova di years.

Plenty energy and infrastructure targets dey di region. Remember say dem accuse Iran of striking Saudi Arabia oil fields for 2019 and dia Houthi proxies hit targets for UAE for 2022.

Since den, Iran don reconcile wit some for di region.

But dis kontris dey play host to US airbases. Some also – discreetly – bin help defend Israel from Iranian missile attack last year.

If dem attack di Gulf, den dem too fit demand American warplanes to come to dia defence as well as Israel.

Israel fail to destroy Iran nuclear capability

What if Israeli attack fail? What if Iran nuclear facilities dey too deep, too well protected? What if dia 400kg of 60% enriched uranium – di nuclear fuel dey just a small step away from being fully weapons-grade, wey go enough for ten bombs or so – and dem no dey destroyed?

Experts believe say dem hide dem deep for secret mines. Israel fit don kill some nuclear scientists but bombs no fit destroy Iran knowhow and expertise.

What if Israel attack convince Iran leadership say di only way of deterring further attacks na to race for nuclear capability as fast as e fit?

What if those new military leaders wey dey round di table dey more stubborn more headstrong and less cautious pass dia predecessors wey don die?

Di least be say, dis fit force Israel to further attacks, wey go potentially put di region inside continual round of strike and counter-strike. Israelis get one brutal phrase for dis strategy; dem dey call am “mowing di grass”.

E dey affect global economy

Di price of oil already dey go high .

What if Iran try to close di Strait of Hormuz, wey go further restrict di movement of oil?

What if – on di other side of di Arabian Peninsula – di Houthis for Yemen redouble dia efforts to attack shipping for Red Sea? Dem be Iran last remaining so-called proxy ally dem get a track record of unpredictability and high risk appetite.

Many kontris around di world already dey suffer a cost of living crisis. A rising price of oil go add to inflation for a global economic system wey already dey shake under di weight of Trump tariff war.

And make we not forget, di one man wey go benefits from high oil prices na President Putin of Russia wey suddenly go see billions more dollars flood into Kremlin coffers to pay for im war against Ukraine.

Iran regime fall, go leave vacuum

What if Israel succeed for dia long term aim of forcing di collapse of di Islamic revolutionary regime for Iran?

Netanyahu claim say im primary aim na to destroy Iran nuclear capability. But im make am clear for im statement yesterday say im big target na regime change.

Im tell “di proud pipo of Iran” say im attack na to “clear di path for una to achieve una freedom” from wetin im call dia “evil and oppressive regime”.

Bringing down Iran goment fit appeal to some for di region, especially some Israelis. But whick kain vacuum e go leave? Wetin go be di unforeseen consequences? Wetin civil conflict for Iran go look like?

Many still remember wetin happun to both Iraq and Libya wen dem remove dia strong centralised goment.

So, much go depend on how dis war go progress in coming days.

How – and how hard – Iran go retaliate? And di kain restraint – if any – wey US fit exert on Israel?

Alot go depend on di answer to those two kwesions.

Cornrow Braids That Blend Culture, Class, And Beauty

0

Cornrow braids are more than just a hairstyle—they are a celebration of heritage, elegance, and timeless beauty. Worn by queens in ancient Africa and embraced by modern fashionistas today, cornrows continue to prove their place as a bold yet graceful statement of identity and style. In today’s fashion scene, these intricate patterns woven close to the scalp are not only practical but carry with them centuries of meaning, creativity, and evolution.

What makes cornrows so special is how effortlessly they bridge culture and class. Whether styled in simple straight lines or sculpted into geometric artistry, cornrows offer a sleek and refined finish that feels both grounded and luxurious. Their neatness and structure make them perfect for high-end events, casual weekends, or even corporate settings, allowing women to showcase confidence and flair without sacrificing cultural authenticity.

Modern interpretations have taken cornrows into new territories. Stylists now blend traditional patterns with contemporary flair—think delicate side swoops, braided mohawks, or a cascade of cornrows leading into soft curls. These styles don’t just turn heads; they start conversations. Every detail, every curve of the braid, becomes a form of self-expression, revealing strength, creativity, and individuality.

But beyond the aesthetics, cornrows symbolize resilience. In a world where trends come and go, cornrows remain rooted. They offer a protective style that safeguards natural hair from harsh conditions while still delivering that polished, runway-ready look. For women navigating busy lifestyles, cornrows provide the perfect mix of low maintenance and high fashion. There’s no need to choose between convenience and beauty—cornrows give you both.

Even the simplest cornrow design carries elegance. It can elevate any outfit, from Ankara gowns to denim jackets, from maxi dresses to power suits. Add a few gold cuffs, some cowries, or let the braids fall naturally over the shoulders, and you have a look that radiates grace and edge in equal measure.

UTAG, TUTAG, CETAG suspend planned strike over Book and Research allowances

0

Three major unions in the tertiary education sector—the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), and the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG)—have officially called off their planned industrial action.

The decision follows the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) directive to facilitate the payment of Book and Research Allowances for the 2024/2025 academic year.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday, June 13, 2025, after a hearing involving representatives from the three unions.

According to the NLC, the unions reported that their concerns had been amicably resolved after GTEC issued a directive on June 11 instructing all heads of public tertiary institutions to submit audited claims to enable the release of funds. The directive applies to both academic and non-academic senior members.

The GTEC intervention has effectively addressed the unions’ main grievance, which had prompted the threat of a nationwide strike. The unions had previously expressed frustration over persistent delays and uncertainty surrounding the disbursement of the allowances.

Welcoming the decision to withdraw the strike threat, the NLC described the resolution as a positive outcome of dialogue and urged government and stakeholders to ensure a smooth and timely completion of the payment process to avert future unrest.

Clarify use of ‘Doctor’ title – GTEC to Gomoa East MP

0

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally requested Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, Desmond Paitoo, to provide clarification on his continued use of the academic title “Doctor” (Dr.), citing concerns over the legitimacy of the designation.

In an official letter addressed to Paitoo, GTEC outlined its concerns regarding the increasing trend of individuals adopting honorary doctorates as academic or professional titles, despite such degrees lacking the formal academic equivalence of earned doctoral qualifications.

The Commission urged the MP to specify the awarding institution, whether the degree was honorary or earned, and the process through which the title was conferred.

GTEC emphasised that the unauthorised use of honorary titles is considered unethical and violates provisions of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023) governing higher education in Ghana. It has formally requested that Paitoo refrain from using the “Doctor” title in all official and public communications.

The Commission warned that non-compliance may trigger regulatory actions, including possible sanctions as prescribed by law. The directive has been issued amid growing scrutiny over title usage in Ghana’s public sphere.

Blekusu Sea Defence Project Phase II reaffirms Mahama’s coastal protection commitment

0

The Minister for Works and Housing, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling coastal erosion, particularly in the Volta Region, as construction officially begins on the long-awaited second phase of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project.

Speaking during an engagement with residents in the Ketu South Municipality, the Minister described Ghana’s coastline—especially in the Volta Region—as one of the hardest hit by erosion, with more than 300 kilometres at risk.

He noted that the newly commenced 8-kilometre project is a critical part of efforts by President John Mahama’s administration to provide long-term protection to vulnerable coastal communities.

“The ongoing 8-kilometre Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project is a clear demonstration of President Mahama’s resolve to implement lasting solutions to protect vulnerable coastal populations,” Mr. Adjei told residents.

The project, awarded to Amandi, has begun with site preparations ahead of full-scale construction. Once completed, it is expected to end years of tidal wave destruction in communities like Amutinu, Salakope, and others along the Ketu South coastline.

Residents have welcomed the news with enthusiasm. Sylvester Kumawu, Assembly Member for the Amutinu-Salakope Electoral Area, described the project as a lifeline.

“I am truly happy that the president has awarded the second phase of the sea defence to start the construction as soon as possible. My colleagues are extremely happy and welcoming of the news, and this is more or less a lifeline for the community. We expect the people to expedite action so that construction will be swift,” he said.

The four-year project is seen as a crucial step toward restoring security and stability for thousands living under the constant threat of sea encroachment.

Israel disappointed by Ghana’s neutral stance on Iran’s nuclear compliance vote

0

The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, Roey Gilad, has voiced disappointment over Ghana’s decision to abstain from a vote in Vienna on whether Iran is complying with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards.

Nineteen of the 35 countries on the board of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) voted for the motion, which was backed by the US, UK, France and Germany.

Diplomats said three countries – Russia, China and Burkina Faso – voted against the resolution at the IAEA board’s meeting in Vienna. Eleven others abstained and two did not vote.

Ambassador Gilad acknowledged Ghana’s sovereignty and non-aligned stance but urged a re-evaluation of its foreign policy direction in light of shifting global dynamics.

While recognizing the long-standing ties between Ghana and Israel, the ambassador noted that despite lobbying for Ghana’s support, the country abstained, likely influenced by the African Union, which he suggested is itself guided by the Arab League’s position.

“It’s important to be balanced on global issues,” he said, encouraging Ghana to adopt a more independent foreign policy, separate from AU or Non-Aligned Movement influences. Nevertheless, he respected Ghana’s sovereign choice.

He stressed the strength of Ghana-Israel relations, the ambassador pointed to Israel’s support in sectors like agriculture and the symbolic gestures of solidarity seen among Ghanaians, such as fishermen flying Israeli flags on their canoes.

Israel considers Iran’s non-compliance with IAEA standards a serious matter, describing Iran as an existential threat to Israel.

The IAEA passed a resolution last Thursday, its first in two decades, declaring Iran non-compliant with its nuclear obligations.

This comes after a report by the IAEA last week that criticized Iran for a “general lack of cooperation” and revealed the country had stockpiled enough uranium enriched to 60% purity, close to weapons-grade levels, to potentially produce nine nuclear bombs.

Iran, however, maintains that its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful purposes and denies any intention to develop or acquire nuclear weapons.

It condemned the resolution as “political” and said it would open a new enrichment facility.

On Friday, Iran launched dozens of ballistic missiles in retaliation for Israel’s earlier strikes on Tehran. Earlier in the day, Israel had carried out a series of intense attacks targeting key sites within Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure.
