The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, has described the ongoing public feud between US President, Donald Trump, and former Head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk, as a positive development for humanity, asserting that reconciliation between the two should never happen.

Trump and Musk have been at odds for some time, following Musk’s strong criticism of Trump’s domestic policy bill, which he labelled a “disgusting abomination.”

Their dispute has played out on social media with Trump threatening to revoke Musk’s government contracts while Musk countered by claiming that Trump would not have won the November election without his support.

President Donald Trump told CNN he’s “not even thinking about” Elon Musk after they explosively sparred on social media, adding that he won’t be speaking with Musk for “a while.”

Responding to the situation, the minister cum Member of Parliament for Builsa South shared his thoughts on Facebook, describing the partnership between the two as “unholy and dangerous,” further wishing that they never reconcile.

He wrote: “The fallout between Trump and Musk is a good omen for our common humanity.

“I’ve been of the view that the partnership between the President of the most powerful nation on earth and the richest man on earth was unholy and in fact dangerous. May they never reconcile.”

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has reiterated Ghana’s efforts in combating gold smuggling, particularly in the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sector.

In an interaction on CNBCA Africa, Gyamfi stated that the Gold Board has deployed a robust national aggregation system aimed at capturing nearly all ASM gold production, a move he described as a game-changer in securing the country’s mineral revenue.

“We have intensified the fight against gold smuggling like never before. Effective aggregation networks and systems have been rolled out across the country to mop up almost all ASM gold produced,” he stated.

He noted that the era in which a substantial portion of ASM gold was lost to smuggling, along with associated revenue and environmental degradation, is now over.

“Today, the state is mopping up ASM gold responsibly. We are exporting it and bringing in the corresponding foreign exchange to support the economy,” he added.

He further emphasised the Gold Board’s commitment to financial integrity and transparency.

“To obtain a Gold Board license, companies must pass Know Your Customer (KYC) and due diligence checks conducted in collaboration with the Bank of Ghana and the Financial Intelligence Centre.

“We are committed to promoting anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulations. That’s why we work closely with the Bank of Ghana and the Financial Intelligence Centre to ensure compliance,” he added.

Hohoe United plan switch to grass pitch ahead of Ghana Premier League debut

Chief Executive Officer of Hohoe United, Edem Ansah, says the club will soon switch from artificial turf to a natural grass pitch.

The club currently plays on an artificial surface at its home ground, a setup that has sparked debate following their impressive unbeaten home run in the just-ended season.

Hohoe United qualified from Zone Three of the Access Bank Division One League to secure promotion to the Ghana Premier League for the first time.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Edem Ansah acknowledged the criticism but confirmed that plans are already underway to install a grass pitch ahead of the club’s debut top-flight season.

“Plans are far advanced, and I believe, before the start of the season, the grass field would also be done because not all venues are astro,” he said.

He added that the team needs to be ready to play on both surfaces. “However, you would have to admit that you will play some matches on astro, and you will play some on grass so you have to have both so that you can train and be used to both so that you don’t find yourself wanting.”

Hohoe United will be the first club from the Volta Region to feature in the Ghana Premier League since 2010.

“Inspite of All They’ve Looted” — Gyampo Exposes NPP’s Hypocrisy Over Ken Ofori-Atta Case

News Hub Creator2h

According to a report by MyNewsGH, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, CEO of the Shippers Authority, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership for what he calls a “politics of convenience”.

According to him, the party’s leaders only rally behind individuals when there is financial gain involved, showing selective loyalty based on personal benefit rather than principle.

Gyampo highlighted the contrasting treatment of two notable figures as evidence of this behavior.

He pointed out the strong backing the NPP gave to Chairman Wontumi when he was detained by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) during an investigation.

However, the party has remained noticeably silent on the case of Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Finance Minister, who is currently facing charges from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

In a social media statement, Gyampo remarked, “Politics of Convenience led by insincere people always looking for who would give them money to chop, in spite of all that they have looted.”

He questioned why there were protests in support of Wontumi but no similar actions for Ofori-Atta.

Ken Ofori-Atta has been declared a fugitive by the OSP and is red-listed by Interpol over allegations of profiting from his public office.

Ministry of Works and Housing signs MoU for water exploration in Ghana

0

The Ministry of Works, Housing, and Water Resources has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with S.E.D.A Farminc Ghana Limited, a Czech company for technical cooperation for water exploration in the country.

The company will use a technology to map out areas of groundwater to assist agencies in the water provision sector to address water supply challenges in the rural and peri-urban communities.

The project would start from the Northern Region, and some of the cities and communities that would benefit from the first phase include Tamale, Tumu, Wa, and Damongo.

The cooperation will also provide a platform for joint project development, capacity building, groundwater resource enhancement, and technology transfer.

The Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, said the signing of the MoU would pave the way for smarter and more resilient water service delivery across the country.

“Today marks the beginning of a structured and forward-looking collaboration to strengthen Ghana’s water sector through technical expertise, knowledge sharing and sustainable investment.

“It is a significant milestone as we seek practical solutions to long-standing challenges in the delivery of safe, reliable and climate-resilient water supply to all.”

Mr Adjei pointed out that the sector faces numerous constraints, including limited infrastructure, the impacts of climate change, inefficient systems, and financial shortfalls.

“Government cannot address these challenges alone hence the partnership like this one is critical,” he stated.

The Minister noted that the country’s groundwater potential remains under-explored, poorly mapped and in some cases, over-exploited without adequate recharge.

“This creates an unsustainable situation that threatens the long-term viability of water sources, especially in drought-prone and climate-stressed zones.

“Through this partnership, we aim to undertake a more scientific and comprehensive mapping of groundwater aquifers, establish robust data systems for monitoring groundwater quality and yield and enhance the technical capacity of our local hydrologists and engineers,” he stated.

He said the data from the exploration would support better planning, drilling efficiency and protection of critical underground water resources.

“Reliable groundwater mapping is essential if we are to provide lasting water access in hard-to-reach areas, reduce borehole failure rates and plan water schemes that can endure climate shocks.”

Mr Adlei said also the partnership would help to explore avenues for blended financing, including concessional loans, donor support, climate funds and private capital mobilisation.

“We believe that S.E.D.A Farminc Ghana Limited’s technical and investment networks can be leveraged to develop viable project proposals and bankable concepts that will attract external funding for high-impact water projects.

“We must move towards a model where water infrastructure is not only built but sustainably maintained and where innovative financing models such as Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and results-based financing become part of our strategy,” he stated.

The Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of the SEDA Africa Group, Martin Habart, said the signing of the agreement was a continuation of the project they had already started in the Eastern Region, with the establishment of a water treatment plant.

He said the cooperation would help establish a training centre in Accra to impart the technology to Ghanaians and that a technical taskforce team would be set up to support the Ministry and key agencies such as the Ghana Water Company Limited.

“The team will give technical advice on all the projects in the water infrastructure,” he stated.

Mr Habart assured the Ministry that they would bring the best experts to Ghana to assist to find solution to the water challenges in the country while helping to mobilise funding by working to attracting investors and donors.

The SEDA Africa were led by the Czech Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Pavel Bilek in the signing of the agreement.

Tree for Life initiative takes off

The Tree for Life programme, targeted at restoring over seven million hectares of degraded land across the country, took off last Thursday with President John Dramani Mahama rallying all citizens to plant at least one tree within the month.

The President planted a commemorative tree at the Kwabenya Community Senior High School in Accra to mark the commencement of the month-long exercise, with a target to plant 30 million trees.

Key stakeholders such as government officials, traditional rulers, members of the diplomatic corpss and development partners gathered to lend their support to the national exercise.

“I entreat everyone in Ghana to actively participate in this important national task for the benefit of current and future generations,” President Mahama declared, urging all citizens to unite and save the environment.

One Child, One Tree

The commemorative tree-planting event, which coincided with the World Environment Day (WED), was used to launch the One Child, One Tree initiative, an intervention under the Tree for Life programme designed for students to actively participate in revegetating the country’s degraded landscape.

Present at the event were the ministers of Land and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah; Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST), Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Education, Haruna Iddrisu; and Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie.

The Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of the Forestry Commission, Dr Hugh Brown; Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Prof. Nana Ama Brown Klutse respectively; as well as some Members of Parliament (MPs), members of the diplomatic corps, and development partners also participated in the event.

The President explained that the “One Child, One Tree” initiative was part of the larger Tree for Life Programme, which sought to empower every child in Ghana to plant and nurture a tree.

He said under the initiative, each student would receive a seedling of a native species suited to the various ecological zones, and plant it on school grounds or in their community.

Transformative initiative

For his part, Mr Iddrisu said the One Child, One Tree initiative was a transformative step towards instilling environmental consciousness in children at an early age.

He said the Ministry of Education would work closely with MEST, Land and Natural Resources, Forestry Commission, and other stakeholders to ensure the distribution of seedlings to all schools across the country for planting.

Again, he said the Ghana Education Service (GES) would implement a new instruction module that focused on instilling environmental consciousness in schoolchildren.

Modalities for planting

Dr Brown explained that the trees would be planted in urban centres, rural communities, school compounds, farmlands, riverbanks and on degraded forest reserves.

He said the tree-planting activities had been categorised into components, with the amenity planting by the public to be undertaken from June 5 to June 30.

Aside from the planting by the public, he said there would be the establishment of 10,000 hectares of forest plantation under the Modified Taungya System (MTS) through collaboration between Forestry Commission and local communities.

Again, he said there would be direct planting of 2,000 hectares by the Youth Forest Champions recruited under the Tree for Life Reforestation initiative while tree seedlings would also be distributed to farmers for planting within farms.

Additionally, he said 500 hectares of mine-out lands had been earmarked for reclamation as part of this year’s exercise, which would also see enrichment planting within degraded forest reserves.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, urged members of the public to actively engage in efforts aimed at addressing the menace of plastic pollution.

She underscored the need for every Ghanaian to get involved in the Tree for Life initiative to help revegetate the environment.

The police have confirmed that a violent clash between them and five suspected highway robbers on the Kumasi-Bibiani Road ended with the fatal shooting of one of the suspects, dailyguidenetwork.com reports.

The remaining four managed to escape, though they are believed to have sustained gunshot wounds, the report added.

Due to this, nearby hospitals and the general public have been urged to stay vigilant and report any individuals seeking medical attention for gun-related injuries.

The incident unfolded around 7:30 pm on June 2, 2025, when the armed suspects halted two passenger-filled vehicles at gunpoint, intending to carry out a robbery.

However, the report said their plans were disrupted when the police arrived at the scene, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

“Upon sighting the police, the suspects armed with the pump action gun, opened fire on the patrol team.

“The officers responded swiftly, returning fire and fatally wounding one of the suspects, who was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the Afari Government Hospital,” a police statement, signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo, of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Department, disclosed.

It added further that; “The remaining four suspects fled the scene and are currently at large.”

Speaking on the four runaway suspects, he disclosed that the police believe that the “fleeing suspects may have sustained gunshot wounds,” as a result of the fierce gun battle with the police.

“The Police are, therefore, appealing to all medical facilities and practitioners to be on the lookout and report any persons presenting with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station,” he added.

DSP Ahianyo further explained that the deceased suspect’s body has been placed in the Afari Government Hospital morgue for preservation and further investigation.

He commended the Nkawie Patrol Team for their swift response, bravery, and professionalism in handling the situation, preventing what could have been a tragic event.

He also urged the public to support the police in their efforts to maintain security.

Energy ministry justifies absence of sunset clause in fuel levy

Richmond Rockson is the PRO at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition Richmond Rockson is the PRO at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition

The Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, has defended the absence of a sunset clause in the Energy Sector Levy Act, stating that the government’s priority is to address longstanding inefficiencies in the sector.

Speaking on The Key Points on June 7, 2025, as monitored by GhanaWeb Business, Rockson explained that the levy remains necessary as the sector continues to grapple with critical structural and financial challenges.

“There were huge inefficiencies in the energy sector. There is no sunset clause on the levy because we want to focus on fixing the challenges first,” he said.

His comments were in response to calls from private legal practitioner and energy expert, Kwame Jantuah, who urged the government to clearly communicate when the fuel levy would be phased out.

Jantuah, who also appeared on the programme, emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in the management of the levy.

“Ghanaians will not object to this, we just want to know when it will end,” he stated.

The Energy Sector Levy Act, introduced to address debt and inefficiencies within the energy sector, has faced criticisms over the years, particularly regarding its indefinite nature and impact on fuel prices.

Highlife maestro, Mike Ejeagha, d!es at 95

Renowned Highlife legend, Mike Ejeagha, known for transforming Igbo folklore and proverbs into captivating music, has passed away at the age of 95.

Ejeagha d!ed on Friday night, June 6, 2025, at about 8pm at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a prolonged illness.

Mike Ejeagha was a dominant voice on Nigerian airwaves in the 1980s with his unique style of Igbo folk music that resonated across generations.

“$58M at Stake, Yet You Won’t Fly to Him?” – Adom-Otchere Questions OSP’s Handling of Ofori-Atta

0

Media personality and former Ghana Airports Company Board Chair, Paul Adom-Otchere, has raised concerns over the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) approach in handling cases involving individuals outside Ghana, particularly former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta as reported by Ghana Web.

Adom-Otchere questioned why the OSP, led by Kissi Agyebeng, had previously traveled abroad to interrogate Samuel Adam Mahama, brother of President John Dramani Mahama regarding the Airbus corruption scandal, but appears unwilling to do the same for Ofori-Atta, who is reportedly residing outside the country.

The former finance minister has recently come under scrutiny for his alleged involvement in the National Cathedral funding saga, with reports suggesting that $58 million is unaccounted for.

Despite the magnitude of the allegation, Adom-Otchere finds the OSP’s reliance on public declarations rather than direct engagement troubling.

“If you were able to do this for somebody who didn’t hold public office… why can’t you do the same for Ken Ofori-Atta?” he asked during his Good Evening Ghana show.

He stressed that the OSP’s inconsistent tactics raise doubts about the institution’s objectivity and commitment to due process, especially when large sums of public funds are in question.

The OSP has issued an Interpol Red Notice against Ofori-Atta, citing abuse of public office for personal gain.

However, critics argue that stronger investigative steps should include face-to-face questioning, regardless of the suspect’s location.

Why didn’t you engage Ghanaians before implementing fuel levy? – NPP MP quizzes Mahama

0

The Member of Parliament for Effia Constituency, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, has questioned President John Dramani Mahama over the lack of extensive consultations before the implementation of the GH¢1 fuel levy.

According to him, it would have been prudent for the government to engage stakeholders in the energy sector as well as the general public on the levy and its significance to the state before its passage.

Boamah-Nyarko chastised President John Mahama for his swiftness in assenting to the bill after its passage by Parliament without seeking the opinions of Ghanaians.

“Why is the president trying to explain that it was a difficult decision yet he had to take it? The bigger conversation is, why were Ghanaians not informed? Why didn’t he engage people, because at the end of the day, we are the ones going to pay, so why didn’t they allow us to think through it and see if there could be alternatives?” he questioned during an interview with George Ayisi on GhanaWeb TV.

The Effia MP also indicated that the levy could lead to a surge in transportation fares, as drivers would be heavily hit financially following the recent reduction.

“The energy experts tell us that there are other administrative expenses that go into this GH¢1, and so they are going to pass it on to the people of Ghana, so the net effect is beyond the one cedi per liter… Now, the lorry stations that reduced their fares are contemplating whether to increase it back to some percentage. So, the impact has been very huge,” he added.

The GH¢1 fuel levy was introduced through the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which Parliament passed on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

The measure imposes a GH¢1 tax on every liter of petroleum product, a decision that has drawn criticisms from transport unions, the general public, and the Minority in Parliament.

However, government officials, including Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, have defended the levy, calling it a necessary intervention to address the country’s $3.1 billion energy sector debt.

QNET reaffirms ethical business practices following false media allegations in Ghana and Burkina Faso

QNET, a global lifestyle and wellness-focused direct selling company, firmly denies recent false media reports in Ghana and Burkina Faso linking the company to human trafficking and illegal migration.

The company said these claims are entirely unfounded and misrepresent its legitimate business model.

In a statement, QNET said it is not involved in the case reported in Assin Fosu, in the Central region, where a Burkinabe national was arrested for allegedly trafficking seven foreign nationals under the pretense of overseas employment opportunities allegedly connected to QNET.

The statement said that “QNET does not offer jobs, migration assistance, or overseas employment services. Our company operates as a direct-selling e-commerce platform, offering individuals the opportunity to become independent distributors of our wellness and lifestyle products.”

“Any person or group using the QNET name to deceive others is doing so without our authorization and in direct violation of our strict ethical policies. We maintain a zero-tolerance stance on fraud and unethical conduct and cooperate fully with law enforcement to take disciplinary action where necessary. We commend the Ghana Police Service for their quick action in the matter,” it added.

On May 27, 2025, QNET collaborated with the Embassy of Burkina Faso in Ghana to facilitate the safe return of 22 Burkinabe nationals, including 20 victims and two suspects, in a humanitarian initiative.

The operation was made possible through joint efforts with INTERPOL Ghana, the Burkinabe Embassy, and the report of a concerned parent. QNET provided logistical and coordination support throughout the process, further underscoring our commitment to community welfare.

ONET said they are currently supporting authorities in Burkina Faso to prosecute individuals involved in these illegalities.

“We are proud to have supported the safe return of Burkinabe citizens and will continue to uphold our values by protecting individuals from exploitation. Our commitment to integrity and ethical practices remains unwavering,” said Biram Fall, Regional General Manager, QNET Sub-Saharan Africa.

Ghana, Morocco sign landmark visa-waiver agreement to boost trade, tourism

0

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, June 7, GNA – Ghana and the Kingdom of Morocco have agreed to a bilateral visa waiver arrangement that will allow Ghanaian citizens to travel to Morocco without the need for traditional visas.

The new policy, which takes immediate effect, replaces the previous visa regime with an online travel authorisation system.

Under the new arrangement, Ghanaians can apply for travel authorisation online and receive approval within 24 hours, eliminating the need for embassy appointments and physical visa processing.

The agreement was one of several outcomes of a two-day working visit to Morocco by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The pact was signed following high-level bilateral talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Nasser Bourita.

The development is significant to the already existing relations between Ghana-Morocco and reflects a growing trend of intra-African mobility and cooperation.

“With existing direct flights, which will be increased following this new agreement, we expect this bilateral visa waiver policy to greatly facilitate trade, tourism, and deepen people-to-people engagements between both countries,” Mr Ablakwa said in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency.

He emphasised the need to make African borders bridges that fostered connectivity and economic collaboration, rather than becoming barriers.

“Diplomacy must make meaningful impact in the lives of the people we serve,” Mr Ablakwa was quoted as saying.

The visa waiver is expected to enhance commercial exchanges, cultural ties, and tourism flows between the two nations, in line with the African Union’s vision of greater continental integration.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration is expected to issue further guidelines on the implementation of the online authorisation system in the coming days.

Companies present first traceable gold bars to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

0

Accra, June 7, GNA-Typhoon Greenfield Development Ltd and MKS PAMP, in conjunction with Development Gold International (DGI), have presented a limited run of unique gold bars to mark the first export of fully traceable and responsibly produced gold sourced from Ghanaian small-scale mines.

The presentation was made to the King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during the Mining in Motion summit at a gala dinner held in Accra.
Six bars were donated for auction, with proceeds going to the King’s charities supporting land restoration and clean water conservation.

Also present at the event were Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Ghana; Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma, Minister of Mining, Republic of Malawi; Colonel Ousmane Abarchi, Minister of Mines, Republic of Niger; Wilmot Paye, Minister of Mines, Liberia; Godard Gibolum, Deputy Minister of Mines, Democratic Republic of Congo; Aboubacar Kourama, Vice Minister of Mines, Guinea-Conakry; Abdiwahab Abdi Omar, Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources, Republic of Somalia; Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of Ghana GoldBoard; and Cisse Vakabe, Mining Advisor to the President of Côte d’Ivoire.

In a historic partnership between Typhoon Greenfield Development Ltd, MKS PAMP and DGI, backed by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), the first 445 grams of gold was produced by Typhoon at its Adomanu mine and exported to Switzerland for refining at MKS PAMP’s facilities.

According to a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, the initiative-fell under the DGI programme that supports small-scale mining operations in meeting international standards, specifically the Development Gold Ghana Performance Standard and the LBMA Responsible Sourcing.
The achievement is the culmination of years of collaboration and marks a new era in the formalisation of Ghana’s small-scale mining sector. It positions Ghana as a credible source of LBMA-compliant gold from small-scale mining entrepreneurs.

Max Afriyie-Barwuah, President of Development Gold International (DGI), said: “This is a major milestone in the Ghanaian gold industry that has been many years in the making, working with mines in the field to build their technical capacity to meet international standards. It signals the serious intention of small-scale miners in Ghana to meet international standards and of LBMA Good Delivery List refiners to recognise Ghana as a source of formal and responsible gold from small-scale mines. Our goal is to reduce environmental degradation and enable these miners to access responsible gold markets globally at scale.”

Kwaku Afrifa Nsiah-Asare, CEO of Typhoon Greenfield Development Ltd, stated:“We are thrilled to pioneer this home-grown Ghanaian responsible mining initiative DGI, and the first small-scale mining business to have our operations assessed to the Development Gold Ghana Performance Standard. Doing so has opened the opportunity to work with the most respected businesses in the international gold market such as the LBMA GDL refinery, MKS PAMP. Partnering with DGI has also assisted us operationally, building our team’s capacity and enhancing our operating systems for greater efficiency and management of our mines’ environmental and social aspects. I expect others to follow and the formalisation of small-scale mining in Ghana to scale rapidly.”

Omar Liess, Chief Commercial Officer of MKS PAMP, commented:
“This partnership represents a significant step forward for responsible sourcing in the artisanal and small-scale mining sector in Ghana. We’re proud to support this initiative and look forward to continued collaboration with our partners in Ghana to scale these efforts and inspire similar initiatives globally.”

Ruth Crowell, Chief Executive of the LBMA, remarked:“The LBMA is encouraged by this announcement. This is exactly the kind of initiative LBMA supports. Ghana is paving the way for similar arrangements between small-scale producers working with GDL refineries in a range of countries.”

DGI’s Development Gold Ghana Performance Standard was created in collaboration with mining industry experts at TDi Sustainability, to independently assess and verify the responsible practices of small-scale gold miners.
The standard aims to create opportunities for Ghana and other nations to redefine small-scale gold mining, countering a legacy of illegal mining and its associated ESG issues such as deforestation, pollution, water contamination, habitat loss, safety risks, and social instability.

The initiative also enhances the traceability of the gold supply chain through DGI’s mine-to-export tech platform, MineTrace, while ensuring environmentally sustainable and socially responsible mining practices.

Assheton Carter, Executive Chair of TDi Sustainability, stated:
“DGI is doing something very important; providing an indigenous Ghana-appropriate, progressive good-practice framework facilitating mine-site improvement at small-scale mines. It is creating an assurance process to demonstrate compliance with international due diligence expectations and, crucially, the technical assistance and capacity development support to uplift this vital sector for the country. TDi has a long history of developing responsible value chains for minerals and ASM gold in particular. It is never easy to do and takes time; in this case, four years of hard work on the ground. We are unbelievably proud to be involved in the launch and roll out of this truly African initiative.”

The LBMA launched its responsible artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) programme in 2022 to support the inclusion of responsibly sourced ASM gold into the LBMA Good Delivery List. Ghana was identified as one of four countries globally with the strongest potential to scale the responsible sourcing of ASM gold.

To this end, the LBMA hosted a Ghana government delegation at its 2023 Responsible Sourcing Summit, co-convened with the World Gold Council.
International delegations have since visited Ghana to engage with supply chain stakeholders. Since 2023, the LBMA has worked to enable responsible ASM sourcing from Ghana by its GDL refinery members, engaging with mines, traders, and the Bank of Ghana. LBMA also published an ASM Toolkit to help GDL refineries implement a system of progressive improvement.

How Gemann’s sentenced to death was reported in 1996

Gemann was sentenced to death in 1996 for murder Gemann was sentenced to death in 1996 for murder

On May 15, 1996, Nana Kwasi Agyemang, popularly known as Gemann, was sentenced to death for murdering a taxi driver, while his friend, Abeiku Nyame, also known as Jagger Pee, received a life sentence for abetting the crime.

Gemann, a popular musician and entertainment personality, was found guilty of murdering a taxi driver named Kwasi Adjei.

The incident happened sometime in 1995 at Dome, a suburb of Accra. His close friend, Abeiku Nyame, also known as Jagger Pee, a popular actor at the time, was with him in the courtroom that day.

The courtroom was filled with people, relatives, and friends who had all come to hear the final judgment in the high-profile case.

According to a newspaper clipping, the trial had been long, but on this day, the case ended. The judge, Justice RK Apaloo, gave the jury two hours to go over all the evidence again. Then, after two more hours of deliberation, the seven-member jury returned with their verdict.

They found Gemann guilty of murder, and Jagger Pee guilty of abetment, which means helping someone commit a crime.

Justice Apaloo sentenced Gemann to death, the punishment for murder in Ghana at the time. But when it came to Jagger Pee, the judge explained that Jagger Pee had only followed Gemann blindly, like a fan who looks up to a star, and because of that, he gave him life imprisonment instead of death.

People burst into tears, while some couldn’t believe what they were hearing. As prison officers walked the two men out in handcuffs and into waiting vehicles, the atmosphere was heavy with pain and regret, the report added.

Jagger Pee was given a chance to speak before he was taken away.

With tears rolling down his face, he said in Twi;

“I have told the court all that happened. I have told the court the truth, but if the truth cannot set me free, then I don’t know what the truth can do.”

As for Gemann, he was seen reading his Bible throughout the trial and appeared nervous as the jurors announced their decision.

Some said he kept staring at them, silently hoping they would believe his story, that it was all an accident and not intentional to take the life of the taxi driver.

But it was too late. The law had spoken, the report said.

Both men were given 30 days to appeal the sentence. Jagger Pee’s lawyer, Owusu-Fordjour, immediately said he would file an appeal to try and save his client from spending the rest of his life in prison.

Bonnah was crushed to death by a timber-loaded trailer | File photo Bonnah was crushed to death by a timber-loaded trailer | File photo

An Asankragwa-based businessman, identified as Mr Bonnah, has been reportedly crushed to death just a day after moving into his newly completed home with his newly married wife and their two-month-old baby at Apowa in the Western Region.

The incident, according to a 3news.com report, occurred around 10:20 am on Thursday, June 5,2025, at Tanokrom, a suburb of Takoradi.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as gory and traumatizing.

According to the report, a timber-loaded trailer heading toward Fijai from Tanokrom lost control and rammed into a commercial minibus (popularly known as trotro) filled with passengers traveling from Takoradi to Kojokrom.

The driver of the trotro, who gave his name as Nkansah Kyerematen, recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the crash.

He is reported to have said that just a few meters from the Tanokrom Pipeano traffic light, he noticed the trailer reversing uncontrollably in their direction.

In an attempt to avoid a collision, he swerved, hitting a car behind him.

However, the trailer still ended up crashing into the trotro.

“All the passengers in my vehicle started running away after the door was forcefully removed by my mate. It was later that eyewitnesses told me one of the passengers trying to escape through the door had been run over by the trailer and killed.”

Connect FM’s Paa Kwesi Simpson, who was at the scene, quickly contacted the Ghana National Fire Service.

The team arrived promptly to tow the trailer and retrieve the body of the deceased.

Family members later identified the deceased as Bonnah, a well-known businessman in Asankragwa.

According to his relatives, he had just completed and moved into his new home at Apowa, accompanied by his newly wedded wife and their infant child, the day before the incident.

He was reportedly on his way to Kojokrom to purchase tiles to furnish the house when he met his untimely death.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital morgue, and personnel from the Sekondi-Takoradi Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) are investigating the incident.

Drivers react to government’s new GH¢1 energy levy on petroleum products

Drivers reacting to the new GH¢1 charge on petroleum products play videoDrivers reacting to the new GH¢1 charge on petroleum products

Following the approval of the GH¢1 charge on every liter of petroleum product by Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, some drivers have reacted to this new levy.

According to them, the new charge comes just weeks after a nationwide reduction in transport fares, creating a financial strain on their businesses.

They say, the new levy threatens the survival of Ghana’s transport system.

Speaking to GhanaWeb Business, a driver at the Kaneshie Lorry Station said drivers are maltreated by governments when it comes to issues relating to the transport sector.

He said the new GH¢1 tax will worsen the plight of drivers in the country as they risk making mega sales compared to previous times.

“You have forced us to reduce transport fares, now you are telling us to pay GH¢1 on every litre. Why? What have we done to you. If you want to generate to support your economy and ECG, then you must tax everyone. Tax both the private and government workers. Why are you taxing only drivers? This is not fair. We are suffering,” he bemoaned.

Give Ballon d’Or to a player who wins the Champions League – Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo(L) believes Dembele (M) deserves Ballon d'Or award over Lamine Yamal (R) Cristiano Ronaldo(L) believes Dembele (M) deserves Ballon d’Or award over Lamine Yamal (R)

Legendary footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo, has said that the prestigious Ballon d’Or award should be given to a player from the team that won the UEFA Champions League.

According to him, since the Champions League is regarded as one of the best football competitions in the world, a player who excelled for the winning team stands a chance of clinching any major accolade.

The Real Madrid legend stated that the award has lost its prestige and value in recent times, as the winner could go to players who won other tournaments, while Champions League winners are sidelined.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s game against Spain in the 2025 UEFA Nations League, Ronaldo noted that the Champions League should play a major role in who wins the Ballon d’Or.

“For me, whoever wins the Ballon d’Or must be a player who has won the Champions League. I think this award has lost its value,” he said while addressing the debate regarding the 2025 edition of the award.

The Al Nassr forward urged football fans not to pressure Barcelona prodigy, Lamine Yamal, to win major awards, as he has more years ahead to grow into a better player.

“Lamine Yamal is doing very well, taking advantage of his talent. Let the kid grow. Don’t put too much pressure on him. Let him be and grow well, take the pressure off. He has no shortage of talent,” he added.

The comment comes on the back of fierce competition between Yamal and French attacker, Ousmane Dembele, for the 2025 Ballon d’Or award.

Some pundits and fans tip Dembele as the favorite after he aided Paris Saint-Germain to win the treble, including the Champions League.

However, others believe Yamal’s individual performance for Barcelona throughout the season puts him ahead, having won La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.

Ghc1 fuel levy key to ending energy sector crisis

0

The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has defended the government’s decision to introduce an additional GHC1 levy, widely known as the Fuel Levy, on petroleum products, describing it as a crucial step toward resolving the long-standing challenges in Ghana’s energy sector.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 7, 2025, Agbana said the amendment to the Energy Sector Levy Bill, 2025, which was passed by Parliament on June 3, marks a decisive move to stabilise the sector.

“We inherited a challenge, and our approach to the challenge is that we need to solve this problem once and for all, and we have decided not to play politics with it,” he stated.

The newly approved levy is expected to generate an estimated GHC 5.7 billion annually.

According to Agbana, although the revenue may not be entirely sufficient, it will play a significant role in reducing energy sector debts and ensuring a stable power supply.

“The challenge we are confronted with in the energy sector is fundamentally a financial issue, so you need to raise money,” he explained.

“With this levy, we are projecting to raise 5.7 billion annually, which will still not be enough, but we have other things that the government is putting in place to solve the problem.”

Agbana emphasised that the government is not simply transferring the burden onto citizens but is taking a holistic approach to ensure a sustainable solution.

“So, the government is not only approaching this issue by placing a burden on the Ghanaian people to pay an extra levy, but we are looking at how we can confront the issue from all sectors to ensure we find a solution that is lasting enough,” he added.

The passage of the levy has sparked mixed reactions from stakeholders. Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have welcomed the move, viewing it as a step toward clearing debts owed them.

However, the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has opposed the increase, urging the government to find alternative funding sources rather than imposing further costs on petroleum products.

Despite the divided opinions, Agbana maintained that the levy is a necessary intervention to address the critical financial issues undermining the energy sector’s performance.

FAWAG backs Mahama’s ban on wooden school furniture

2 minutes read

The Furniture and Wood Products Association of Ghana (FAWAG) has backed President John Dramani Mahama’s proposed ban on wooden school furniture, calling it a timely and eco-friendly policy.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One, the Administrative Assistant of FAWAG,  Christopher Dadzawa described the decision as “wonderful and welcome news,” citing the heavy toll school furniture production takes on Ghana’s forests.

“We received this announcement by the president to reduce the use of wood products for furniture in our schools. We are all aware that school furniture made of wood takes a very huge volume of wood from our forests,” Dadzawa said.

President Mahama announced the initiative on June 5 during World Environment Day celebrations, pledging to replace wooden furniture with environmentally friendly materials such as recycled plastic and metal.

He highlighted the contradiction of promoting reforestation while simultaneously depleting forests for wood products in schools, promising a directive to phase out such practices.

“To reduce deforestation, I will issue a directive to stop the use of wood for producing school furniture. Going forward, we will adopt environmentally friendly alternatives such as recycled plastic or metal,” Mahama stated.

Mr. Dadzawa applauded the president’s environmental motivation, noting it aligns with national efforts to preserve forest cover and promote sustainability.

“The president was quick to give the reasons for that decision… to promote our forest cover and contribute to sustaining the environment,” Dadzawa noted.

However, he clarified that while FAWAG supports the shift, it may be impractical to eliminate wood entirely from school furniture, explaining that some components would still require wood even in metal-based designs.

“When we are working with metal for school furniture, it is not the whole 100 per cent that is metal. Some components of the furniture would be in wood,” he added.

Gory Tanokrom accident claims life of Radio Morning Show host

0

A gory accident on Friday, June 6, at Tankokrom in Takoradi has claimed the life of Isaac Bonaray, popularly known as Ike Bonaray, the morning show host of Enchi-based Max FM. The tragic incident occurred as residents were preparing to mark the Eid Al-Adha holiday.

Bonaray was run over by a faulty timber truck that was reversing and crashed into a mini-bus (trotro) in which he was a passenger.

Those who identified the deceased said he had married just a week earlier and had recently moved into his completed home at Apowa, a suburb of Takoradi, with his new wife and their two-month-old baby.

According to eyewitnesses, the timber truck, loaded with lumber from Tanokrom and heading toward the Fijai-Cape Coast direction, lost control and slammed into a trotro carrying passengers from Takoradi to Kojokrom.

Giving his account of the incident, the trotro driver, Nkansah Kyerematen, said:
“Just within reach of the Tanokrom Pipeano Traffic light, the timber truck was seen reversing in the direction of the Trotro. In a move to avoid the truck, my Trotro hit the car behind me but the truck finally also hit the Trotro.

“The passengers in my vehicle started running away after the door was forcefully removed by my mate. I was immediately told by eyewitnesses that one of the passengers (Isaac Bonaray) in my vehicle, in an attempt to escape through the door, had been ran over and killed by the timber truck,” he explained.

First responders, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Police, arrived shortly after being alerted. They towed the truck and retrieved Bonaray’s body, which was sent to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital morgue.

Isaac Bonaray was not only a popular radio personality but also the Chairman of the Aowin Municipal Football Association and a member of the Executive Council of the Western Regional Football Association.

Isaac Boamah-Nyarko is MP for Effia constituency play videoIsaac Boamah-Nyarko is MP for Effia constituency

The Member of Parliament for Effia and a member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the John Dramani Mahama administration over the newly-approved 1% energy levy on petroleum products, describing it as a betrayal of public trust.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s George Ayisi, Boamah-Nyarko added his voice to criticisms from energy experts and some Ghanaians who argue that the levy unfairly adds to the financial burden of already struggling consumers.

While recognising the financial difficulties facing Ghana’s energy sector, particularly the growing debts of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the MP stressed that these inefficiencies should not serve as a justification for imposing extra taxes on the public.

“We all agree that the debts are huge and we need to do something about it. The energy minister said they were discussing with the IPPs to revise some of the charges downwards. He said they are trying to reintroduce some partnership to ECG and bring in the private sector. If there is a need to create some monetary space to pay for the energy sector debts, do we need GH¢1 per litre?” he asked.

Parliament, on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, passed the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, which introduces a GH¢1 charge on every liter of petroleum product.

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, said the levy is expected to generate GH¢5.7 billion to support the energy sector and sustain electricity supply nationwide.

However, Boamah-Nyarko argued that the levy could lead to a surge in prices of goods and services, further worsening the economic hardships faced by citizens, describing the tax as unexpected, which could eventually undermine confidence among Ghanaians.

“The Ghanaian won’t believe the politician or the government, because the government said it is going to reduce taxes, now it is increasing more taxes. Prices were coming down, because of this, prices would either remain the same or go up. The impact is real, nobody should chicken out. If we don’t put our acts together, this would be one of the decisions to bring the confidence of the people down,” he stated.

BoG withdraws from Gold for Oil programme after heavy losses

0

Bank of Ghana's new headquarters Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has withdrawn from the Gold for Oil programme following significant financial losses recorded under the initiative.

The decision was made during a board meeting held on March 13, 2025, and comes after the central bank reported a staggering loss of GH¢41.82 billion from the programme for the financial year ending December 31, 2024.

This marks a sharp increase from the GH¢317 million loss recorded in the previous year.

According to the BoG’s financial report, as of December 31, 2024, the bank had committed GH¢4.69 billion in seed capital toward the programme.

A key component of the overall exchange losses was a GH¢1.82 billion shortfall, specifically attributed to the Gold for Oil initiative.

The programme, which aimed to use locally sourced gold to purchase oil in a bid to reduce pressure on the country’s foreign exchange reserves, was a central part of the government’s strategy to stabilise fuel prices and ease forex demand.

The central bank’s exit signals a major shift in its policy direction amid rising concerns about fiscal sustainability.

It remains to be seen how the government will restructure or continue the Gold for Oil programme following the Bank of Ghana’s withdrawal.

#TrendingGH: Drivers react to government’s new GH¢1 energy levy on petroleum products

Ghanaians better off accepting GHC1 fuel levy

0

Economist Professor Patrick Asuming has said Ghanaians are better off accepting the newly introduced GHC1 fuel levy in light of the ongoing energy sector crisis.

His comments come in response to the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, recently passed by Parliament. The bill introduces a GHS1 tax on fuel to raise revenue to clear mounting energy sector debts and improve power supply stability.

Speaking on The Big Issue with Selorm Adonoo on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 7, Prof. Asuming expressed support for the policy, noting that resolving the energy crisis is critical to Ghana’s economic progress.

“As Ghanaians, we know the problems in the energy sector, and we’re better off accepting the GHC1 per litre levy, if it is indeed going to fix the problem, than wait for the whole thing to come crashing down on us,” he said.

He stressed that without addressing the power sector’s challenges, key government initiatives such as industrialisation and the 24-hour economy would struggle to materialise.

“Everybody knows that if we don’t deal with the energy sector problems, we’re not going anywhere. We can have all the other big plans, all these things about industrialisation, a 24-hour economy. Anything that we’re talking about, we have to address the energy sector,” he stated.

However, Prof. Asuming criticised the timing and communication of the levy’s implementation.

“My only issue is the timing and how it has been presented. The confusion about whether it is fuel only or not doesn’t help,” he stated.

GHC1.2bn emergency fuel cost ‘unjustified’ – Energy Analyst slams Govt

0

The Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental and Sustainable Energy, Benjamin Nsiah, has questioned the government’s justification for the proposed GHC1.2 billion expenditure on emergency fuel, arguing that the figure lacks transparency and inconsistent with available data from energy sector institutions.

His remarks come after the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, stated in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on June 4 that government would require about GHC1.2 billion to procure emergency liquid fuel to stabilize the country’s power supply.

However, speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 7, 2025, Mr. Nsiah challenged the rationale behind the figure, urging the government to provide clarity on how the estimate was calculated.

“They should come clear on how they arrived at the GHC1.2 billion,” he said. “This is because we do not need GHC1.2 billion to procure emergency fuel. We know they are very expensive, and they don’t want to rely on them. When we need them, we need them in smaller volumes for times when we experience disruption in any of the gas suppliers.”

Citing figures from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Energy Commission, Nsiah asserted that the actual cost of emergency fuel for the entire year should be significantly lower.

“I do not agree because I have said earlier that we need $189 million for procuring the emergency fuel. GRIDCo gave this figure; in fact, they earlier said $90 million, later they revised it to $180 million for the liquefied fuel for the entire year,” he explained.

He also pointed to the Energy Commission’s projections, which place emergency fuel costs at around $33 million, noting that emergency fuel is not typically included in long-term energy planning due to its unreliability and high cost.

Nsiah raised further concerns over inflated pricing and possible corruption in the procurement process.

“When I look at the estimates made by GRIDCo, I do not think that we should be buying light crude oil for $100 per barrel. I also do not think that we should buy diesel oil for $1,600 per metric tonne, but those estimates have been included anyway,” he said.

“If the GHC1.2 billion they are talking about is truly for liquid fuel, then it suggests that the government would be spending GHC2.4 billion on fuel for the year—and that is not sustainable.”

Isaac Boamah-Nyarko is MP for Effia constituency Isaac Boamah-Nyarko is MP for Effia constituency

The Member of Parliament for Effia, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, has said that despite the legitimacy of the government’s decision to investigate past officials under the Akufo-Addo administration, there is the need for it to ensure due processes are being followed.

His comment comes on the back of the ongoing investigations by the Attorney General and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (ORAL team) into activities of certain past appointees.

According to him, the current administration seems to be more focused on scoring political points than fighting corruption genuinely in the country.

“If government has a reason to investigate and prosecute any past appointee, it is in order for them to do that, but due process is always supposed to be respected. The fundamental human rights of every human being must be respected. The fact that you are investigating someone doesn’t make him a criminal,” he said.

He added that the government is creating unnecessary media hype around the investigations to gain popularity.

“And so if not for political mischief or trying to make noise in the media, or trying to make noise in the minds of Ghanaians, I don’t think if you are investigating someone, you should make noise about it. All you do is to complete your work and make sure that if the people are guilty, the court pronounces on them. If we need to take refund from them, we take our properties from them then put them behind bars,” he stated.

Speaking to GhanaWeb’s George Ayisi at Parliament, the MP described the government’s actions as “political manhunting” and “witch-hunting,” suggesting a lack of fairness and objectivity.

He further asserted that the government lacks true commitment to the fight against corruption and is instead engaging in political prosecutions marked by double standards.

“People are calling it political manhunting and witch hunting because of the way the government is going about things. We’ve been in this country when the president came into office, appointed an Attorney General, two days after, he withdrew all cases against his people, now you are coming to prosecute others that you are yet to investigate. That tells you the double standards of the government. And it means the government is not committed against the fight against corruption. It is doing political prosecution,” he added.

Dumsor Levy is a betrayal of trust – Miracles Aboagye

0

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has fiercely criticised the recently passed Dumsor levy, describing it as a betrayal of public trust.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, 7 June, Aboagye launched a scathing attack on the Mahama administration for imposing what he called an unjust and burdensome tax on Ghanaians.

“It is a betrayal of trust,” he stated. “The situation we find ourselves in is simply a clueless, everlasting incompetent bunch of arrogant braggarts who have simply scammed their way into government.”

His comments reflect the growing frustration among segments of the public and political opposition over the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The newly approved legislation imposes a GH¢1 per litre surcharge on petroleum products to raise revenue to tackle Ghana’s ballooning energy sector debt.

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who presented the bill under a certificate of urgency, revealed that the sector’s total indebtedness stood at US$3.1 billion as of March 2025.

He argued that an estimated US$3.7 billion is required to settle the debt, with a further US$1.2 billion needed to secure fuel for thermal power generation.

However, the Minority in Parliament has denounced the bill as a “predatory tax,” claiming it will extract GH¢5.7 billion annually from already burdened households and businesses.

They have demanded transparency and broader stakeholder consultation, warning that the hurried passage of the levy raises concerns about accountability and financial mismanagement.

From farm to frustration: Bono East’s agri-food start-ups grapple with fragmented regulatory framework

0

ERTAINLY, Ghana’s agri-food Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) industry plays a vital role in building a robust economy.

The sector, which remains an essential contributor to the growth of the country’s economy, continues to contribute significantly to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment and food security.

The agri-food value chain involves the journey of a food product from the farm to the consumer, including input suppliers, farmers, processors, distributors and retailers, creating vast employment opportunities and promoting food security.

It’s a well-known fact that the northern belt is a major contributor to Ghana’s agricultural industry.

Bono East

The Bono East Region within the northern belt is noted for its active involvement in agri-food SMEs.

The region, with 11 municipal and district administrative areas, has vast fertile land suitable for agriculture and agribusiness.

Its population is about 880,921 according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census.

Majority of its population are energetic young people, including graduates who have ventured into agriculture and agribusiness, increasing the number of youth in the industry.

The Monitoring and Evaluation Officer at the Bono East Regional Department of Agriculture, Bawa Amidu, told the Daily Graphic that several youths in the region had ventured into agriculture and agribusiness.

He, however, said the youth were interested in vegetable production more than the tree crops because of their short gestation period.

“But we also realised that the elderly have shifted from crop production to tree crops such as cocoa and cashew because the sector is more regulated,” he said.

Mr Amidu said the region’s agriculture and agribusiness prospects were bright because of the youth’s active involvement in the sector.

Challenges

However, one of the major challenges that keeps frustrating the industry players, particularly start-ups in the agrifood-SMEs is bureaucracy and regulatory hurdles hindering the efficient operation of agrifood-SMEs.

Some Agrifood entrepreneurs, mainly start-ups, told the Daily Graphic that the process involved in registering their business or products was too cumbersome and frustrating.

The industry players said they go through several frustrations and processes when engaging with regulatory agencies to license and register their businesses.

These challenges, they said, negatively affect the growth of their businesses.

They said they had to go through several regulatory agencies such as the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Registrar General’s Department (RGD), Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) and Ghana Standards Authority (GSA).

Others include the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs), among others, to get their businesses licensed.

Frustrating processes

Sharing her experience, a 33-year-old Sobolo (a beverage made from hibiscus) producer, Asana Fatima, told the Daily Graphic that she went through several frustrating processes to get the FDA to approve her products.

She said it took her more than six months to complete the registration process because of the long procedure and requirements involved.

“I nearly halted the process because it was time-consuming, frustrating and costly because I had to travel from Techiman to Sunyani every week,” she said.

Another fruit juice producer, Evelyn Pomaa, who had no formal registration of her business, told the Daily Graphic that she was interested in registering, but the process involved was killing her desire to do so.

“I have not made any attempt, but I had an experience with my friend, who registered her business. I don’t want to go through similar frustrations,” she said.

Mrs Pomaa appealed to the government to decentralise the operations of the regulatory agencies to reduce the cost of travelling.

FDA response

However, the Bono Regional Principal Regulatory Officer of the FDA, Gloria Azerongma Salifu, told the Daily Graphic that FDA registration processes were not as cumbersome as the public say.

“Our officers are willing to help applicants go through the process. So you don’t need a middleman to register your products,” she said.

Mrs Salifu said because safety was paramount to the FDA, they had put in place several measures, including online registration, to make the process easier and faster.

She said the documentation was for safety purposes, which focused on the persons, the raw materials, lab analysis of the product and the facility.

Mrs Salifu said some of the processes were free, adding that FDA was always ready to assist businesses acquire the necessary documentation.

She urged potential agrifood entrepreneurs and other MSMEs to ignore the information that registering businesses with FDA and other regulatory agencies was frustrating.

NKABOM initiative

In a bid to resolve the frustrations start-ups go through to register their businesses and expand access to education and career opportunities in the food systems, a northern belt stakeholders dialogue on Agrifood Regulation and youth enterprises has been organised for the industry players at Hansua near Techiman in the Bono East Region.

It was organised by the University of Ghana (UG) through its Nutrition and Sustainable Agri-food Collaborative (NKABOM), an entrepreneurship pillar, in partnership with McGill University and Mastercard Foundation.

The engagement brought together key regulatory institutions, youth-led agri-food businesses, and local policymakers across the nine regions in the northern belt of Ghana.

The aim was to foster dialogue on regulatory challenges, support mechanisms and pathways for co-creating an enabling environment for agrifood SMEs.

The pillar is part of the institution’s efforts to strengthen Ghana’s agri-food entrepreneurship ecosystem and promote dialogue between regulatory agencies and agri-food start-ups.

The partnership is to enhance capacity building by equipping students and beneficiaries with skills and resources needed to create sustainable livelihoods within the agri-food systems sector.

The project is guided by three key objectives, namely learning and training, inclusive access and food security and entrepreneurship promotion.

Food safety

The Dean of the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Professor Justice Bawole, said the engagement was to foster a dialogue-driven approach to address challenges in food production, processing, distribution and retail.

He said the dialogue was also to advocate regulatory reforms that align with international food safety and trade standards.

Prof. Bawole said the engagement was to enhance policy implementation, compliance and enforcement in food safety, trade and sustainability.

He said it would help bridge the gap between regulatory bodies and agri-food start-ups across the northern belt by facilitating dialogue and co-developing strategies for a more enabling business environment.

He said the UG NKABOM was a strategic initiative aimed at transforming the agri-food system of Ghana, by empowering people, particularly the youth, women, persons with disabilities and internally displaced persons.

Prof. Bawole said the project was crucial for improving food security, enhancing livelihoods and driving national development.

The Bono East Regional Head of Compliance and Debt Manager at the GRA, Mohammed Ibrahim, said: “By law, the first institution to go to when developing a business idea is GRA.

At this initial stage, you will discuss your business plan with GRA for advice.”

He explained that GRA would give advice on the proposed business in order to help them succeed.

The stakeholder interactions brought to the fore the need for regulatory reforms to streamline regulations and reduce bureaucratic hurdles, to create a more conducive environment for agri-food SMEs.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II have opened up about how an elderly woman in Kumasi was apprehended by soldiers during late President Jerry John Rawlings’ tenure in office.

They shared that Rawlings launched an operation to crack down on the hoarding of essential commodities that could benefit the country economically.

Kufuor disclosed that during the operation, an elderly woman was searched by military personnel who found that she was hiding a prestigious beverage and was subsequently questioned.

“During Rawlings’ era, soldiers were searching for hidden commodities and they entered a certain woman’s house in Kumasi.

“They found a prestigious beverage thus EC Africa hidden under her bed, so the soldiers interrogated her on how she got it and the motive behind the hoarding,” Kufuor recounted in Twi during a public encounter.

In a light moment where both personalities were sharing the story and laughing together, Otumfuo confirmed the ex-president’s account and added that the woman was apprehended for failing to justify her actions.

“Yes, it happened in ’79. The beverage was popular in Africa, so the woman’s case was the first one they had seen, and the woman had hoarded it. That was when the woman was arrested and later dealt with,” the Asantehene added.

Daddies, Here Are Fashion Styles You Can Wear to an Occasion

0

When it comes to fashion, men—especially fathers—often play it safe, sticking to the basics and avoiding bold statements. However, today’s modern dad can be stylish, confident, and well-dressed for every occasion without sacrificing comfort or masculinity. Whether you’re attending a wedding, birthday party, church event, or family celebration, there’s a wide variety of fashionable options to help you stand out gracefully. Here are fashion styles every dad can confidently wear to an occasion.

The Senator style is a timeless favorite among Nigerian and African dads. Made from quality fabrics like cashmere or polished cotton, this two-piece outfit features a long tunic top and matching trousers. You can opt for neutral colors like navy, grey, or black for a classic look, or go for richer tones like wine, emerald green, or royal blue for more festive events. Pair it with loafers or leather sandals to complete the elegant look.

When the occasion calls for grandeur—such as a traditional wedding or naming ceremony—nothing beats a well-tailored Agbada. This flowing, three-piece attire instantly adds presence and prestige. Choose bold embroidery and fine fabrics to stand out, and don’t forget a stylish cap (fila) to tie the whole look together.

For semi-formal gatherings, dads can opt for native short-sleeved kaftans or ankara tops paired with trousers. These looks are not only stylish but also breathable and easy to move around in—especially when keeping up with the kids at parties!

For less traditional occasions, a well-fitted blazer, chinos, and a crisp shirt can create a polished look. Add a pocket square or a wristwatch to give it a personal touch. Comfortable loafers or dress shoes will keep the outfit sharp yet relaxed.

Conclusion: Fashion is not just for the young—daddies, too, can slay in style. With the right outfit choices, you can express your personality, respect the occasion, and set a stylish example for your family. So next time you’re stepping out, don’t hold back—dress to impress!
