A video has surfaced on social media showing some students of the Winneba Technical Institute openly displaying a variety of weapons.

The footage captures a group of students parading and brandishing what appear to be knives and other objects within the school premises, prompting widespread public concern.

The caption reads, “A disturbing video has surfaced of some students of the Winneba Technical Institute openly brandishing various weapons.

The act has drawn widespread outrage, particularly because of the ongoing case involving SDA student Suzzy Pinamang, who is still recovering from the tragedy of another student bringing a weapon to school.”

This incident follows a recent shooting at the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Senior High School, where a second-year student, Suzzy Pinamang, was allegedly shot in the eye by another student who brought a firearm to class and accidentally discharged it.

She is currently in the UK undergoing emergency medical treatment, with the full cost being covered by Ibrahim Mahama, Special Aide to Rafik Mahama.

The decision to seek treatment abroad followed recommendations by doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), who indicated that she required specialist care unavailable locally.

Cocoa advocacy group calls on the government to address price disparity

Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana

The Cocoa Development Advocacy Platform (CDAP) has called on the government to decisively address the widening price gap between Ghanaian and Ivorian cocoa, warning that the disparity is fueling cross-border smuggling and threatening the country’s cocoa sector.

According to a statement by CDAP, while cocoa prices in Côte d’Ivoire stood at the equivalent of GH¢3,113 per bag at the end of 2024 just GH¢13 higher than Ghana’s GH¢3,100.

Meanwhile, the West African neighbor has since raised its farmgate price to GH¢3,767.29 per bag.

This, the association believe has created a sharp price difference of GH¢667.29 incentivising Ghanaian cocoa farmers to smuggle their produce across the border in search of better earnings.

“This development threatens the integrity of Ghana’s cocoa value chain and risks undermining the country’s cocoa revenue base. We urge the government to act swiftly and decisively to protect the livelihoods of our farmers and the future of our cocoa industry,”

The platform is also calling on government to fulfill its longstanding commitment to pay farmers 70% of the prevailing world market price for cocoa.

When combined with the $25 Living Income Differential (LID) per bag, CDAP argues this would ensure farmers receive a fair and sustainable farmgate price of approximately GHS 6,000 per bag.

According to CDAP such a pricing model is essential for addressing the deep-seated issues of poverty and exploitation within Ghana’s cocoa sector.

The group also warned that failure to act could result in broader social and economic consequences, including declining productivity, rural poverty, and increased rural-urban migration.

CDAP stressed that the current disparities in pricing have already led to rampant smuggling, which erodes state revenue and undermines the long-term viability of the cocoa sector.

Benjamin Asare shines in Hearts of Oak’s vital victory over Berekum Chelsea

Benjamin Asare is a goalkeeper of Hearts of Oak Benjamin Asare is a goalkeeper of Hearts of Oak

Hearts of Oak secured a vital 1-0 win over Berekum Chelsea on Sunday, May 18, 2025. While Mawuli Wayo’s second-half strike sealed the points, goalkeeper Benjamin Asare truly stole the show with a commanding performance between the sticks.

In a game where fine margins made all the difference, Asare was at his brilliant best, keeping out everything Berekum Chelsea threw at him to earn his 16th clean sheet in just 25 Ghana Premier League appearances this season.

His consistency and leadership at the back have been vital for the Phobians, and Sunday was yet another showcase of his reliability.

Asare made a series of crucial saves, particularly in the closing stages when Chelsea pressed hard for an equaliser.

His handling under pressure, intelligent positioning, and calm distribution were key in keeping Hearts of Oak composed during nervy moments.

The clean sheet also highlights Asare’s growing reputation as one of the most dependable goalkeepers in the league.

It’s no coincidence that Hearts have maintained their dominance over former coach Samuel Boadu’s Berekum Chelsea side since his departure.

Every win in this fixture has featured a solid defensive performance, with Asare at the heart of it.

While Wayo’s goal was the difference on the scoreboard, it was Asare’s performance that laid the foundation for the victory.

The 1-0 win keeps Hearts in 5th place with 49 points, trailing Asante Kotoko by five, but the result shows the team’s upward trajectory with a rock-solid last line of defence.

Next up, the Phobians return home to face Accra Lions, with Asare surely looking to extend his clean sheet tally and inspire another crucial victory.

“Your Petitions Might Outnumber Your Votes in 2028” – Billa Alamzy Slams NPP’s Tactics

0

The Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, has rebuked the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he terms their overreliance on petitions and press briefings in responding to the Mahama government’s policies.

According to Ghana Web, In a GHOne TV interview on May 19, 2025, Billa Alamzy argued that the opposition’s strategy is both repetitive and counterproductive, warning that it risks deeper losses than those suffered in the 2024 elections.

He noted that the NPP appears quick to flaunt petitions and stage media events at every opportunity, rather than concentrating on internal reform and voter engagement.

“If you’re not petitioning, you’re holding press conferences instead of focusing on rebuilding your party,” he said, suggesting that this cycle does little to galvanize support at the grassroots.

Billa Alamzy cautioned that persistence with this tactic could lead to a scenario where “by 2028, your petitions and press conferences might outnumber the votes you receive,” underscoring his belief that the current government has steered the country effectively.

His remarks shows a broader concern that the NPP has neglected substantive policy debate and constructive criticism in favour of sensational media activity.

He challenged the party to adopt a more substantive role in Parliament, encouraging it to hold the government to account through well-researched legislative proposals rather than sensational allegations.

Pointing to recent claims about alleged financial inducements by the opposition’s own spokesperson, Sammy Gyamfi, he questioned the efficacy of pursuing such matters in public forums: “What crime has been committed?”

Billa Alamzy concluded by urging the NPP to recalibrate its approach: cease the parade of petitions and press conferences, pursue genuine organisational renewal, and engage voters with concrete ideas rather than headlines.

SSNIT opens 52nd branch at Spintex, unveils virtual platform

0

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has opened its 52nd branch at Takyi Plaza, Spintex, marking a significant step in its efforts to expand coverage and improve service accessibility for members.

Commissioned on Monday, May 19, the new branch is strategically located within a busy business enclave, aiming to offer greater convenience to clients and encourage broader engagement on retirement planning.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, SSNIT Director-General, Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to expanding its reach and enhancing user experience.

“Our strategy is to ensure that we expand on coverage. We provide more accessible touch points for all our clients and members, and to ensure that we also bring convenience to the people that we serve,” he said.

In a landmark development, SSNIT also announced the launch of a virtual branch, allowing clients to access the full range of its services online.

“The next level is having a virtual branch that provides the full bouquet of our services. You dial in, and you have a benefits person, a compliance person, a data person, or a branch manager ready to assist you—24 hours a day,” Mr. Biney explained.

This innovation complements SSNIT’s existing digital platforms, including its website, member portal, and mobile app—offering members round-the-clock access to services from any location.

Addressing the ongoing national conversation around Ghana’s retirement age, which currently stands at 60, the Director-General acknowledged that while other countries have adjusted the age upwards, any change locally would require inclusive stakeholder consultations.

“Life expectancy has gone up, and we need to situate these conversations in the broader context of employment and unemployment,” he said, stressing the importance of balancing job opportunities for younger generations with the needs of an ageing population. For now, SSNIT’s focus remains on expanding coverage and improving service delivery.

Mr. Biney highlighted SSNIT’s efforts to increase pension payouts through its annual indexation process, which considers inflation rates, investment returns, and membership contributions. To support this, SSNIT is optimising its investment portfolio by channelling resources into high-performing assets.

“First income securities have been yielding good returns for us, and some listed equities, particularly in the banking and telecommunications sectors, have done great,” he said. The organisation is also working to transform non-performing assets into profitable ones to ensure sustainable returns for pensioners.

We knew what we were doing – BoG fires back after cedi gains 12%

0

First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Zakaria Mumuni, says the cedi’s performance is not only a dramatic reversal from last year but an unprecedented feat since adopting a flexible exchange rate regime.

“Year to date, we’ve had the cedi appreciating by over 12%—specifically 12.2%,” he stated on PM Express Business Edition.

“The same time last year, we had depreciated by about 13%. So this is a complete reversal of what the situation was.”

Calling it “maybe unprecedented,” Dr. Mumuni said the cedi’s surge reflects the most decisive and effective policy mix the central bank has rolled out in recent history.

“If you look at the data from when we started the floating rate regime up to now, this is the only time within the first four or five months that we have had this level of strength in the Ghana cedi.”

He emphasised that the turnaround is largely driven by domestic policy, not just external conditions.

“The domestic factors really have more weight in this performance than the external factors,” he said. “It simply reflects the careful mix of policies that are being implemented.”

A key part of this strategy was the Bank of Ghana’s decision to hike interest rates and tighten monetary policy, moves that initially attracted public backlash.

“When we raised the policy rate, a lot of people, including GUTA, came after us,” he recalled.

“They had all kinds of comments. Analysts were not happy. But we knew exactly what we were doing—and it’s the fruits you are beginning to see.”

Dr. Mumuni pointed to the Bank’s aggressive liquidity management as central to the disinflation process. “We tightened monetary policy to reengineer the disinflation process,” he explained.

“This is really helping, and we are doing it through our open market operations.”

He added that the earlier hike in the cash reserve ratio also helped soak up excess liquidity.

“That has already sterilised some cedi liquidity in the system.”

The official’s remarks signal the central bank’s growing confidence that its unpopular but firm measures are yielding results.

He believes the cedi’s strong showing is proof that policy discipline and market management are starting to restore credibility to Ghana’s macroeconomic framework.

Burkina Faso applauded for recognising Rawlings’ legacy

0

The family of former President Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, has expressed gratitude to the government and people of Burkina Faso for the naming of a street after him, describing it as an honour not only to the family, but to the people of Ghana.

In a statement read on behalf of the family by Ms. Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings, Executive Director of the JJ Rawlings Foundation, during the ceremony in Ouagadougou on Sunday, May 17, she said: “This is a huge recognition of the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to social justice, a man who gave his life in service to the ordinary people.”

“For Jerry Rawlings the pursuit of a just society; the pursuit of the socio-economic liberation of the ordinary African, from poverty, from food insecurity, from under development and from global marginalisation was not a political ambition. It was a calling, it was a duty. In the same vein, Thomas Sankara dedicated his life to the ideal of a self-sufficient Africa, free from the shackles of neo-colonialism. They both envisioned an Africa where these principles would flourish- a vision still necessary today.” Ms. Asantewaa Rawlings stated.

The naming of the avenue came a day after the grand inauguration of a mausoleum in Ouagadougou, housing the remains of Thomas Sankara and his 12 companions who died on October 15, 1987, of which JJ Rawlings played a significant role in the project. He was the honorary Chair of the Sankara Memorial Committee until his passing in 2020.

Ms. Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings, daughter of Flt Lt Rawlings, who was accompanied by her brother, Kimathi Agyeman-Rawlings, said the naming of the avenue marked a significant milestone as it serves as a reminder of the values both Sankara and Rawlings stood for – values deeply rooted in the fight for justice, equality and the conscious awakening of African people.

She reminded the audience of Flt Lt Rawlings’s address at the launch of the Thomas Sankara Memorial Project in October 2016 when he said:

“The journey of emancipation must continue. There is no easy road ahead. The power of imperialist control is almost like a noose around Africa’s neck. The stark inequalities of globalisation, the force-feeding of economic partnership agreements with the attendant imbalance in trade mean we must fight a new political battle against neo-colonialism.”

The naming of the avenue and unveiling of a plaque which was administered by Burkina Faso’s Minister for Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Mr. Gilbert Ouedraogo on behalf of the country’s Prime Minister, was also attended by the Mayor of Ouagadougou, Maurice Konaté, a delegation from the Thomas Sankara Memorial Committee and members of the public.

Minister Gilbert Ouédraogo paid tribute to the memory of a great fighter for the emancipation of our continent, a voice of Pan-Africanism, a worthy son of Africa, and a great friend of Captain Thomas Sankara and Burkina Faso.

“In our history, we recognise the multifaceted and selfless support that President Jerry John Rawlings once provided to Captain Thomas Isidore Noël Sankara, father of the Burkina Faso Revolution. We cannot ignore the willingness he demonstrated in his time to uncover the truth during the investigation into the assassination of President Sankara,” he declared.

The Spokesperson for the Burkinabe government said: “For our country, where the integration and unity of peoples are already a reality in daily life, the naming of an avenue in memory of President John Jerry Rawlings is an invitation to consolidate everything that unites our two peoples and to ensure that present and future generations pursue our common goal of building a united and prosperous Africa.”

Spanning more than two kilometres, the avenue named after the late President John Jerry Rawlings begins in the north with Avenue Jean-Paul II and ends in the south with Boulevard Capitaine Isidore Noël Thomas Sankara.

Earlier on Saturday a high-powered delegation from Ghana representing President John Mahama attended the inauguration of the Mausoleum.

The delegation included Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle and Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security, Defence Minister, Edward Omane Boamah, Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Ghana’s Special Envoy to the Alliance of Sahel States, Lt Col Gbevlo Lartey (rtd), Naval Captain Asaase Gyimah and Mr. Kofi Totobi Quakyi.

‘Your votes in 2028 might be less than your total petitions and pressers’ – Billa Alamzy to NPP

Nikyema Billa Alamzy is the MP for Chiana-Paga Constituency Nikyema Billa Alamzy is the MP for Chiana-Paga Constituency

The Member of Parliament for the Chiana-Paga Constituency, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, has criticised the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what he describes as unnecessary petitions and press conferences.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV on May 19, 2025, Billa Alamzy said the NPP has been organising press conferences and submitting petitions in response to virtually every action taken by the John Dramani Mahama administration.

According to him, this approach could lead to an even more devastating defeat than what the NPP experienced in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

“I only pray that you change your tactics. Don’t come in with the ‘sisi fia no’ campaign again because, with that, you might not even get 20%. The way your party is going now, you are not reorganising. You’re not reorganising at all.

“If I’m right, by tomorrow, or even this evening, you will organise another press conference. If you’re not petitioning, you’re holding press conferences instead of focusing on rebuilding your party,” he said.

He added, “I can tell you that if you don’t stop the press conferences and petitions, by the end of the day in 2028, your petitions and press conferences might outnumber the votes you receive. Because we are managing this country very well.”

The Chiana-Paga MP reiterated that the NPP’s repeated recourse to petitions and media briefings is making them an ineffective opposition.

“You should be a worthy opposition, put us on our toes. But press conferences and petitions over Sammy Gyamfi allegedly giving someone money? Is that the work of an opposition party? What crime has been committed?” he asked.

Ghana’s Power Crisis: ‘Enough is Enough,’ Minority Caucus demands action

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, May 19, GNA – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus of the Energy Committee of Parliament has expressed concern over Ghana’s alleged power sector crisis, criticizing the Minister of Energy, Mr John Jinapor, for “panic-then-retreat” communication.

As a result, the Caucus demanded tangible actions to resolve the ongoing alleged issues plaguing the sector.

“We demand action and results from the Minister of Energy and the government. It is time to stop the talking and put the lights on,” Mr George Kwame Aboagye, the Ranking on the Energy Committee of Parliament said on Monday during a Press Conference in Parliament House.

The Caucus also made key demands which included the fixing of alleged fuel supply issues to ensure stable fuel supply for Independent Power Producers (IPPs), renegotiate alleged burdensome “take-or-pay” contracts, improve efficiency to set KPIs for Electricity Company of Ghana and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) to reduce operational and distribution losses.

” We also call for the diversification of energy mix to optimize renewables and gas to reduce reliance on imported fuels as well as smart metering to accelerate roll-out to curb theft and increase revenue mobilization,” Mr Abogye said.

The Minority Caucus also criticized the Minister’s recent statements, which allegedly claimed Ghana had only “2.6 days of fuel left,” as “baseless and economically damaging.”

Mr Aboagye, also the NPP Member of Parliament for Asene-Akroso-Manso, urged the government to prioritize action over rhetoric and address the sector’s financial challenges.

“The patience of Ghanaians is wearing thin, and the economy is suffering. The Minority Caucus’ call to action emphasizes the need for immediate solutions to Ghana’s power crisis. “Enough is enough,” the Ranking on the Energy Committee of Parliament said.

Ghana’s power sector faces significant challenges, including an alleged $1.7 billion debt owed to IPPs, alleged over 35 per cent transmission and distribution losses and alleged frequent power outages (dumsor) affecting businesses and economy.

Rare Publication On Policing Launched

0

Mohammed Alhassan

A rare autobiography by a retired Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Alhassan titled An Aroma of Policing, was last Thursday launched at the Fitness Club of the Police Headquarters in Accra.

The occasion brought together former IGPs and an array of crème de la crème of the Ghanaian society ranging from the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, the Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak and the immediate past Interior Minister Henry Quartey to friends of the former IGP.

The man assigned the task of the auction did not sweat to break the target, the exercise attracting over GH¢300,000.

President John Mahama, businessman Ibrahim Mahama, individuals from various strata of society were some of the patrons of the auction.

The publishing company, Digibooks, who saw the promise in the project, justifiably smiled for the outcome of their efforts.

The publication is not only an autobiography, it is indeed a flavour of the Ghana Police Service from the perspective of the son of an escort policeman who later reluctantly enlisted in the law enforcement agency and rising to become a Chief Constable.

It is a book composed in simple English, as the reviewer Prof. Vladimir Antwi-Danso observed, and one which is worthy of the shelf of policy makers and indeed those engaged in law enforcement.

The reviewer said the 36-chapter publication is not only an autobiography but a policy document woven in a canvas of where the author is coming from.

Mohammed Alhassan, during his discourse ahead of the launch, stated that policing is a calling, adding that he joined the service at a time when it was not prestigious.

As the man responsible for an array of reforms in the police such as the Visibility Unit, he called for purposeful transformation in law enforcement in the country.

The Guest Speaker, Julius Debrah, in his speech called for a reimaging of policing to focus on national development.

He added that crime prevention should be the bedrock of policing in the country, not forgetting an early warning system to protect the community.

He supported the author’s call for now dormant Police Staff College in Winneba as a centre of excellence in leadership training.

Government, he said, is committed to broadening and supporting an all-female Formed Police Unit (FPU).

Mr. Debrah also announced that steps are on to increase the global peace profile of the Ghana Police Service.

Reforms in the Police Service, he noted, is not a destination but journey.

The Chief Host, as it were IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, spoke about how he was entrusted with the command of the Greater Accra Region by Mohammed Alhassan, saying, “the IGP said with you as the Greater Accra Regional Commander, I can sleep.”

Torgbui Sri III, the Awomefia of Anlo was the Chairman of the occasion.

Mohammed Alhassan is a member of the Council of State.

FIFA Honors Ghanaian Football Icons Wilberforce Mfum and Nana Pooley

0

The world football community came together to pay tribute to two cherished figures in Ghanaian football—Wilberforce Mfum and Francis Yaw Frimpong, widely known as Nana Pooley—during the 75th FIFA Congress held in Asunción, Paraguay, on May 15, 2025.

A minute of silence was observed in their memory, a solemn and heartfelt gesture led by FIFA to acknowledge their lasting contributions to the game in Ghana and beyond.

Wilberforce Mfum, a towering figure in Ghana’s football history, passed away on May 11, 2025, at the age of 88.

Born on August 28, 1936, Mfum was a key member of Ghana’s victorious 1963 Africa Cup of Nations squad, playing a decisive role by scoring crucial goals throughout the tournament, including in the final.

He scored 20 goals in just 26 appearances for the national team, cementing his legacy as one of Ghana’s most efficient forwards.

His club career included notable spells at Swedru All Blacks and Asante Kotoko before he made a mark in the United States, playing for clubs like Baltimore Bays and the New York Cosmos. Mfum also represented Ghana at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, showcasing his talent on the world stage.

Francis Yaw Frimpong, known as Nana Pooley, was a beloved figure among Asante Kotoko fans and served as a vital member of the club’s Supporters’ Communication Team.

His passion for the game was unwavering until the very end. Tragically, he lost his life on February 2, 2025, during a Ghana Premier League fixture between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko SC at Nana Kronmansah Park in Nsoatre.

The gesture by FIFA at its highest decision-making gathering underscored the enduring impact of these individuals on Ghanaian football culture and community spirit.

Strengthen Ghana’s reserves ahead of Q4 pressures – Dr Anim to BoG

Dr Daniel Amarteye Anim is a business strategist and financial analyst Dr Daniel Amarteye Anim is a business strategist and financial analyst

Business strategist and financial analyst Dr Daniel Amarteye Anim has urged the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to intensify efforts to strengthen the country’s foreign reserves, warning that rising economic pressures in the fourth quarter could undermine the value of the cedi.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business on Ghana’s economic outlook, Dr Anim stressed the importance of fiscal and monetary measures to cushion the economy against expected future shocks.

“Beef up the reserves at the Bank of Ghana, and by the fourth quarter, it will also be a peak season for our traders and business people to bring more goods into the economy,” he stated.

He further added, “By the fourth quarter, BoG reserves will definitely be affected, and that may further impact the value of the cedi.”

Dr Anim urged the central bank to act swiftly to bolster macroeconomic stability and protect the local currency from renewed depreciation pressures.

His comments highlight concerns over the sustainability of the cedi’s recent gains, particularly as Ghana prepares to resume external debt servicing and navigate global economic uncertainties.

In a trending video, the TV host compared how women approach relationships to how men do, stating that women often ask serious questions when introduced to a man, like “What does he do?”

VJ Adams, however, criticised men for ignoring such relevant checks and instead prioritising looks alone.

He said:

“Afa, see young boys… I don’t know, by now, you people still do not have sense, but I will help you, that’s why ègbón adugbo is here. Look at your female folks, whenever they are discussing amongst themselves and one of them wants to introduce a new man, the first question they are going to ask is: *What does he do?* They want to check if he has asked them out before or toasted them before. But Sheri eyin boys yi, idiot ni, idiot ni. Ọmọ, this your baby carry sha… never asking important questions.”

“This Move Will Curb Mass Migration” – Former MP Backs Government’s Agency Relocation Plan

0

The former Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dickson Adomako Kissi, has expressed strong support for President John Dramani Mahama’s initiative to decentralize government operations by relocating some ministries and agencies from the Greater Accra Region to other parts of the country as reported by Ghana Web.

The move is designed to address pressing challenges such as overpopulation, traffic congestion, and frequent flooding in Accra.

Speaking on GH One on May 19, 2025, Adomako Kissi highlighted the potential benefits of the plan, emphasizing that it would not only ease the strain on Accra’s infrastructure but also stimulate economic growth in regions like the Eastern and Volta Regions.

He remarked, “I think this move by the president is important because it will curb the mass migration of young professionals to urban cities in search of jobs.”

The government’s plan involves creating a new city that spans three regions—Greater Accra, Eastern, and Volta—offering a decentralized hub for public offices and services.

President Mahama previously described the initiative as a way to reduce the pressure on Accra while promoting development outside the capital.

Adomako Kissi further expressed optimism about the broader impact of this strategy, suggesting that relocating government functions could serve as a model for other regions in Ghana.

This approach aims to bring opportunities closer to rural areas, reducing urban migration and balancing national development.

The relocation initiative forms part of a broader vision presented during the National Democratic Congress’s Thank You Tour, where President Mahama acknowledged the support of the people in Greater Accra and outlined plans to foster inclusive growth across Ghana.

Ghana’s Power Crises: “Stop the talking, Put the lights on”- Minority to Gov’t

0

By Godwill Arthur- Mensah

Accra, May 19, GNA – The New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed misgivings about President Mahama-led Government’s continuous excuses and failure to resolve the frequent power outages in the country.

The Minority identified financial challenges facing the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as the major cause of the outages and urged the government to immediately release funds to pay the debts owed to the IPPs to generate sufficient power to address the energy crises.

The Minority’s call follows Mr John Abdulai Jinapor, the Energy and Green Transition Minister’s recent comments that it was left with 2.6 days of fuel in stock, thus, causing fear and panic among the citizens about imminent prolonged power outages in the country.

During a press conference at Parliament House in Accra on Monday in response to the Energy Minister’s comments, Mr George Kwame Aboagye, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, said the Minister’s recent claim that Ghana had only 2.6 days of fuel left was not only baseless but economically damaging.

He said such remarks create an atmosphere of uncertainty and instability, which was detrimental to investor confidence.

“Power is the lifeblood of industry, and such statements send panic through businesses still recovering from the aftershocks of Covid-19 and global economic turbulence,” Mr Aboagye stated.

Mr Aboagye remarked: “Stop the fear-mongering and focus on fixing fuel supply for IPPs and engage stakeholders to re-negotiate burdensome take-or-pay contracts”.

He underscored the need for government to strategically set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Northern Electricity Company (NEDCO), to reduce operational and distribution losses and improve revenue collection.

The Minority urged the government to diversify the energy mix with renewables and gas optimization to reduce reliance on imported fuels as well as accelerating the roll-out of smart metres to curb electricity thefts.

The Minority said this was not the first time the Minister had painted a gloomy picture about the country’s energy situation, noting :”During the swearing-in ceremony of the President, he alarmingly stated that Ghana was left with ‘”only five hours of fuel,” a comment he later retracted after clarifying that it pertained to Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO).

Mr Aboagye observed that the pattern of “panic-then-retreat” communication was unacceptable and entreated the Minister to stop frightening Ghanaians and start fixing the energy challenges after five months in government.

The Minority stated that the erstwhile New Patriotic Party Government under Akufo-Addo inherited a similar situation in January 2017 with over two billion dollars energy sector debt due to excess capacity payments linked to legacy ‘Take-or-Pay’ contracts signed by President Mahama’s first-term in office between 2013 and 2016.

The Minority indicated that despite those challenges, the Akufo-Addo-led Government kept the lights on for eight years.

The Minority noted that President Mahama campaigned on a “24-hour economy” with his bold vision requiring “uninterrupted power supply” and thus urged the Energy Minister to show leadership and come out with pragmatic solution to addressing the current energy crises.

Ghanaian students abroad to picket at Embassies over unpaid stipends

0

Coalition of Ghanaian Scholars Abroad, beneficiaries of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat studying in various countries have announced a planned demonstration on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, to protest the government’s failure to pay long-overdue stipends and allowances.

The students, who include beneficiaries of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat’s foreign scholarships, say they have gone 14 months without receiving their monthly stipends, while book and health allowances have not been paid for two academic years.

In a joint statement issued by representatives across Europe, North America, and Asia, the students accused the government of abandoning its obligation to support their studies, despite repeated appeals and diplomatic engagements.

The Coalition insisted that the demonstration is a peaceful assembly aimed at drawing attention to their prolonged hardship and demanding accountability from the Ghanaian authorities responsible for the disbursement of funds.

“This protest is not a political move. It is a desperate cry for survival. Many of us are stranded, unable to pay rent, buy food, or access healthcare. We feel forgotten by the country we are representing,” the statement read.

Black Rockets in Guinea for African Youth Boxing Championships

0

Three fighters of the national youth boxing team, Black Rockets, departed Accra last Saturday night en route to Conakry, Guinea, where they will compete at the 3rd African Youth Boxing Championships between May 16-26.

Minimumweight (48kg) campaigner, George Nii Nortey Dowuona, 18, flyweight (51kg) Mathias Ashitey, 17 and Desmond Pappoe, 17 – light middleweight (71kg), will be flying the flag of Ghana at the event, which features a number of countries from around the continent.

They will know their immediate opponents after the entry and draws today, ahead of the start of the boxing competition tomorrow.

Accompanied by assistant Black Rockets trainer, Joseph Martey, the trio are expected to use the exposure and competition at the one-week event as preparations for the upcoming Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics qualifiers later this year.

All three were part of the six-man squad that represented Ghana at the IBA World Youth Championships in Budva, Montenegro, last year, the other three having moved up in age to the Elite division with the national amateur boxing team, Black Bombers.

Aside the boxing tournament, the African Boxing Confederation (AfBC) are also hosting three International Boxing Association (IBA) certification courses aimed at elevating professional standards: a Referee & Judge (R&J) course, Coaching course and International Technical Official (ITO) course, all of which began in the Guinea capital last Friday.

Former Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) President, George Okoe Lamptey, also Board Member of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), is also in Conakry in his role as a certified International Technical Officer (ITO) to supervise the training.

These courses are open to officials and coaches from across the continent in the AfBC’s quest to improve technical expertise, as well as foster uniformity in boxing governance and mentorship.

“The championship underscores efforts to develop boxing talent and infrastructure in Africa, addressing gaps in officiating and coaching quality,” said a statement from the AfBC.

“By combining competition with education, organisers aim to create a sustainable pathway for athletes and professionals, ensuring the sport’s growth aligns with global benchmarks,” it explained.

NPP will have advantage in 2028 because NDC will field a first-time candidate – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, says the NPP stands a strong chance of returning to power in the 2028 general elections, citing Ghana’s political history that disfavors first-time presidential candidates.

Addressing members of the NPP’s UK branch in London, Dr Bawumia argued that opposition parties have historically enjoyed an upper hand when the ruling party fields a new candidate after a two-term presidency.

“Our political history suggests that it is very difficult for a first-time presidential candidate to win an election in Ghana,” he stated. “So, there is a sense that in 2028, the NDC is going to bring a candidate for the first time. I believe we will have an advantage, all things being equal, over that new candidate.”

Dr Bawumia further explained that his confidence is also rooted in what he described as the NDC’s likely failure to deliver on its numerous campaign promises made ahead of the 2024 elections.

“In opposition, they made so many promises and told a lot of stories about what they were going to do. They said they would reduce the cost of living… but prices are rather going up,” he noted.

He also acknowledged the NPP’s disappointing performance in the 2024 elections and took responsibility for the party’s electoral outcome. “The NPP did a lot of work, there’s no doubt about that. But we did not get everything right. We got quite a few things wrong, and I think that, on my own behalf and on behalf of the party, I apologise to all of you for us not getting the figures right.”

Despite the loss, Dr Bawumia remained optimistic about the party’s future. “By the grace of God, if we are given another opportunity, we will get many things right, because we have learnt the lessons that will guide us forward,” he said.

The NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections was significant, with John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) winning the presidency with 56.55% of the vote (6,328,397 votes) compared to Dr Bawumia’s 41.61% (4,657,304 votes). The party also lost several parliamentary seats.

A 12-member committee led by former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, has since submitted a report on the causes of the defeat, but party leadership says the findings are not for public disclosure.

Nonetheless, Dr Bawumia insists the NPP is taking the lessons seriously and is gearing up for a stronger comeback.

Ejisu MP Donates 200 Desks To Onwe SHS

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, Kwabena Boateng, has donated 200 desks to Onwe Senior High School in response to appeals from the school’s headmistress and students.

The donation, which includes both dual and mono desks, follows recent reports highlighting the dire furniture shortage at the school, where some Form One students were forced to stand or squat during lessons due to the lack of desks.

Staff at the school had earlier expressed concern over the impact of the situation on academic performance and student attendance. Some students reportedly stayed away from school, while others showed signs of truancy as a result of the poor classroom conditions.

The donation comes as a relief to students and staff. During a visit to the school last Monday, carpenters were seen assembling the new desks, with some students expressing gratitude to the MP for his swift intervention.

School authorities said the new furniture would help restore regular attendance and improve teaching and learning at the school.

We got quite a few things wrong..I apologize to all of you — Mahamudu Bawumia to Ghanaians

News Hub Creator21min

According to reports by CitiNews, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Vice President, has openly addressed the failings of the NPP government, extending an apology to the people of Ghana and asking for their renewed confidence ahead of the next general elections.

During a recent event in London, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that while the NPP had made considerable progress in governance, it had also encountered setbacks and made errors.

He expressed regret over the administration’s missteps and, speaking for himself and the party, conveyed a heartfelt apology to Ghanaians for the areas where they fell short.

He said: “The NPP did a lot of work, there’s no doubt about that, but we did not get everything right. We got quite a few things wrong, and I think that, on my own behalf, on behalf of the party and the government, I apologise to all of you for us not getting the things right that we should have gotten.”

Dr. Bawumia further emphasized that the party has reflected on its past actions and is determined to improve if granted another term in office.

He conveyed hope that the lessons learned from their experiences would guide them towards more effective governance in the future.

His comments come in the wake of the NPP’s poor showing in the 2024 elections.

‘Your votes in 2028 might be less than your total petitions and pressers’ – Billa Alamzy to NPP

0

I’m disappointed – Lyrical Joe reacts to missing out on TGMA Best Rap Performance award

Lyrical Joe has expressed disappointment after missing out on the Best Rap Performance award Lyrical Joe has expressed disappointment after missing out on the Best Rap Performance award

Ghanaian rapper Lyrical Joe has expressed disappointment after missing out on the Best Rap Performance award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, the rapper said he had high hopes of winning the award, especially after putting in so much effort into his work over the past year.

“Yes, every year. I’m nominated there. I’m always hopeful. Until maybe that category definition has changed,” he said.

Lyrical Joe explained that his rap song meets all the requirements of the category, including lyrical dexterity and flow, which are key criteria for winning the award.

“When you go into the category is talking about lyrical dexterity, flow, all those, I mean, I always do that. So just like anyone that gets nominated anytime. I’m also nominated. I’m hopeful,” he stated.

He also revealed that this year’s loss was especially painful because of how much work and stress went into his works.

According to him, his ‘5th August’ song in particular, demanded a lot from him, in terms of creativity.

“Yeah, this year because last year’s 5th August song cost me a lot, a lot of stress and lots of work went in there. It’s not easy to shoot 10-minute hip-hop video and keep it top-notch. So, if I’m disappointed, it’s normal,” he added.

Lyrical Joe was nominated alongside other rappers like Eno Barony, Sarkodie, Okyeame Kwame, Flowking Stone, and Kweku Smoke.

Kweku Smoke eventually emerged winner of the category.

The origin of the Asantehene’s name ‘Tutu’

0

Historian Yaw Anokye Frimpong has given the histroy of the name of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Historian Yaw Anokye Frimpong has given the histroy of the name of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

The current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is named after Otumfuo Osei Tutu I, who is regarded as the founder of the Ashanti Empire.

Stories are told of how the first Asantehene got the name, “Tutu,” and what it actually means.

Historian Yaw Anokye Frimpong, in a recent interview on Max TV, gave the history behind the name and why it was given to the current king of the Asante Kingdom.

Anokye Frimpong, who is also a lawyer by profession, began with an explanation of why Asantes name their kings after past ones.

He said that Asantes believe in reincarnation, adding that chiefs believed to be reincarnated have the additional name of ‘Ababio’, which literally means ‘has come again.’

“In the Asante tradition, we believe that our chiefs are reincarnated. The title of Osei Tutu III was Opemsuo. Opemsuo means ‘he fights without backtracking no matter what happens’… So, we have something like Opemsuo Ababio, which means, ‘Opemsuo has reincarnated’,” he explained in the Twi dialect.

The historian added that the name of the first Asantehene was Osei Kofi and not Osei Tutu, as has been claimed in some history books.

“Again, let us understand the meaning of the name Osei Tutu. Some history books say that Osei Tutu I’s mother gave him that name after a deity who helped her give birth when she was having trouble conceiving. But this is not true. If his name was Osei Tutu from his childhood, why would history say that before his enthronement, he was called Osei Kofi? The name he was called from childhood was Osei Kofi,” he narrated.

He went on to tell the story of how the first Asantehene got the name ‘Osei Tutu.’

According to him, “Osei Tutu” is a corrupted form of an accolade for Osei Kofi because of the might of the soldiers who were assigned to protect him and the weapons they were using.

“Asantes used to be under the people of Denkyira, and they had notes to the Elmina Castle. They had direct access to the coast, but the Asantes did not have that to be able to buy guns for their battles.

“What happened was that when Osei Tutu’s uncle died and he was summoned, the Akuamuhene, Ansa Sasraku, gave him about five well-trained soldiers. Ansa Sasraku told them to come to Accra and go to the Danish Castle (Christiansborg Castle) to purchase state-of-the-art weapons,” he said.

The historian added, “These weapons were over and above what the people of Denkyira had ever seen before. So, he (Osei Kofi) had trained soldiers and weapons that no one had seen before, so that they would defeat any person they fought with.”

He explained further that Osei Tutu defeated all his enemies with the soldiers and weapons given to him, which made him feared.

The reference people gave him because of his might was corrupted into the name that exists today, he added.

“So, when this was done, Osei Tutu (who was by then Osei Kofi) was able to defeat his enemies and was given the name ‘the man who speaks through guns’. That was even what the British wrote – ‘the man who speaks through guns’.

“This is translated in Twi as ‘Osei a ɔto tuo’. ‘Osei a ɔto tuo’ is what has been corrupted to ‘Osei Tutu’,” he explained.

Appeals court dismisses NAM1’s application to halt criminal trial

Nana Appiah Mensah, CEO of defunct Menzgold Ghana Nana Appiah Mensah, CEO of defunct Menzgold Ghana

The Court of Appeal has dismissed an application filed by Nana Appiah Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of the defunct Menzgold Ghana Limited, seeking to halt his ongoing criminal trial.

The application was filed pending the resolution of an appeal challenging a High Court ruling that directed him to open his defense.

In 2024, the High Court ruled that Nana Appiah Mensah, popularly known as NAM1, must open his defense in a criminal case involving multiple charges. These charges include operating a gold dealership without a license, fraudulent breach of trust, defrauding by false pretenses, and money laundering.

His legal team subsequently filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal to overturn the High Court’s decision, seeking a stay of proceedings until the appeal was determined.

However, on Monday, May 19, 2025, state prosecutors argued before the appellate court that the application was an attempt to overreach the court’s authority, and that no exceptional circumstances had been presented to justify halting the trial.

The three-member panel of the Court of Appeal, comprising Justices Gbiel Suurbaareh, Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, and Christopher Archer, unanimously dismissed the application.

Following the ruling, Frederick Forson, spokesperson for the aggrieved customers of Menzgold, welcomed the decision as a significant step toward justice.

He described the ruling as an important moment for those who suffered losses from Menzgold’s operations.

Despite the setback, Nana Appiah Mensah has signaled his intention to further appeal the decision at the Supreme Court, based on legal advice from his counsel.

‘NPP will come back into gov’t in 2028 and I will be president’ – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President and NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, says he strongly believes the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will come back to power in the 2028 elections.

Speaking to NPP members in London, Dr Bawumia said history shows that in Ghana, it’s very hard for a political party to win an election with a brand-new candidate after the sitting president has done two terms.

GPRTU hints at imminent reduction

0

The Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abass Imoro, has hinted at an imminent reduction in transport fares, promising commuters some relief as the Ghana cedi continues to gain strength against the US dollar.

Speaking to Channel One News on Monday, May 19,  Imoro revealed that ongoing negotiations between transport operators and the Ministry of Transport are nearing a conclusion, with a final meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 20.

“It was a marathon meeting. The Transport Ministry is looking for some percentage, and the transport operators are also looking for some percentage. Finally, we closed halfway. We are going back, and tomorrow we will come and meet them on the final decision,” he said.

According to him, the talks are focused on fare reductions that reflect the appreciation of the cedi, assuring commuters that the outcome of the meeting would bring some relief to their pockets.

“The meeting is about the reduction in fares, so the public should rest assured that we will give them a smiley reduction,” Imoro added.

Drivers suspend nationwide strike following Govt assurances to decongest

0

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) have suspended their planned nationwide strike, initially scheduled to take effect on Monday, May 19, 2025.

The strike had been declared in protest against the government’s alleged failure to enforce aspects of the Road Traffic Regulations Act 2012, which bars street trading on roads, pavements, and at designated bus stops.

However, following a closed-door meeting with the Minister for Transport, the groups have agreed to temporarily halt their industrial action, pending the government’s fulfilment of its promises.

National Public Relations Officer for the Concerned Drivers Association, David Agboado, told Citi News that while the strike had been suspended, it could be reinstated if enforcement measures are not sustained.

“I am sounding this caution to the Mayor that we do not want tomorrow to be a nine-day wonder. If tomorrow they are cleared off the street, and they come back the next day, they should be assured that we will also sit down and not work.

“Pending the action of the Mayor, we have suspended the strike action, but that doesn’t mean we won’t strike.”

Meanwhile, GPRTU’s Industrial Relations Officer, Abass Imoro, also confirmed that a follow-up meeting will be held tomorrow to finalise discussions on a potential reduction in transport fares, following the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi.

“It was a marathon meeting. The Transport Ministry is looking for some percentage, and the transport operators are also looking for some percentage.

“Finally, we closed halfway. We are going back, and tomorrow we will come and meet them to discuss the final decision. The meeting is about the reduction in fares, so the public should rest assured that we will give them a smile reduction.”

GIS Descend On Migrant Beggars

0

A scene after the swoop

Personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) last Friday rounded up over two thousand migrant beggars from various parts of Accra.

The figure of the arrested persons, according to GIS sources is 2,241, whose presence at strategic locations including some ceremonial streets has caused a continuous nuisance to motorists and pedestrians alike.

The beggars are migrants from Niger Republic who, a few years ago, were deported with the support of their home country in a major operation, but they returned not long after.

The statistics of those arrested are 384 adult males, 525 adult females, 577 male children, and 755 female children.

During a press briefing on Friday, May 16, the Head of Public Relations, GIS, Michael Amoako-Atta, announced that after a profiling of the suspects they would be deported to their individual countries via buses which, he added, are ready.

The Friday dawn operation focused on the general area of the Kotoka International Airport, Madina, Kaneshie, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and Abossey Okai.

“As we speak, we have arrested 2,241 foreign nationals, made up of 384 male adults, 577 male children, 525 female adults, and 755 female children. All these persons are currently undergoing profiling,” he stated.

The exercise, GIS sources explained, are part of national security measures to protect the country from elements whose backgrounds are unknown.

Beggars from Niger Republic have in the past few years flocked Ghana, where they easily find accommodation in the Zongo communities.

From such locations, they go out daily to beg in the streets. They can be found not only in Accra but Kumasi and other urban settings.

Nigeria is a no-go area for them because the authorities in the various states have clamped down on them in the face of militant attacks from neighbouring Niger.

There are agents who bring the beggars into the country. In Accra, Sabon Zongo is a haven for the beggars where they sleep in front of shops and some shelters provided by some landlords for fees. At dawn, they fan out in town to engage in street begging, their preferred locations being traffic intersections.

Hindsight: The key battles that could determine the title race (Part 1)

0

The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season will conclude in three weeks yet, there is still not clear favorite for what will go down as the most competitive in the history of the competition.

The level of competition may be debatable, but never before has there been four different clubs; Bibiani Gold Stars (56 points), Nations F.C. (with a game in hand) and Kpando Heart of Lions (54 points each), and Asante Kotoko (54 points), all with a realistic chance of winning the league.

Asante Kotoko

After firing Dr. Prosper Ogum, Kotoko, who last won the league two years ago, has won two out of three league matches (4-1 against Dreams F.C. and 1-0 over Aduana Stars) to keep up with Gold Stars. The only blemish in an otherwise unsullied record was the stalemate against rivals Accrea Hearts of Oak in Karim Zito’s second game.

Abdul Karim Zito could become only the second coach to have won the league both as a player and coach for Asante Kotoko

Regardless of the marginal gains, the true measure of Kotoko’s temperament and by extension, their championship credentials will be tested in the next three matches.

The litmus test, to that extent, will be on Sunday when they face Gold Stars in Bibiani.

But it is also a fixture Kotoko has typically enjoyed playing. In seven previous meetings, Kotoko has won four times and lost just once. In fact. Kotoko’s only defeat to Gold Stars came after four unbeaten matches in the fixture.

Since Eric Bosomtwi and Prince Adu Kwabena scored for Gold Stars in the 2-1 win in September 2023, the Miners have lost both games against Kotoko without scoring a goal.

What’s more, Kotoko has scored 12 goals in the fixture, while letting in just four (two of those were recorded in one game.)

A betting man will bet on either or both of Kwame Poku and Albert Amoah to score on Sunday.

Where Gold Stars can feel confident, is their monstrous home record. Before last week’s home loss to Karela United, the Miners had not lost at home in a year and five months (517.4 days).

It is a ground they simply do not lose.

Kotoko’s current position and points tally mean any slip-up effectively ends their title aspirations.

Kotoko won the reverse fixture 2-0 at the Baba Yara Stadium in December last year

What comes after Gold Stars, are familiar foes, Medeama S.C.

Traditionally a complex fixture, this is perhaps the first time in many years where Medeama are not in a title race and at the same time, suffered an early elimination in the MTN FA Cup.

To that extent, it is not a team to be feared.

Beyond Kevin Nkrumah, there is very little worth fearing about the former league champions.

The problem for Kotoko, however, is Medeama’s legendary cussedness against Kotoko.

In 20 league meetings, Medeama has won 6, and lost 7, while 7 have ended in stalemates.

In the last five matches at the Baba Yara Stadium, Medeama have won more games (three) than they have lost (two) to Asante Kotoko.

To put it bluntly, Medeama is a problem for Kotoko.

On average, Kotoko drops points once every four matches at home.

For the next two weeks, however, none of those slip-ups can be countenanced.

If Kotoko can emerge from the two games with six points, then it’s all systems go against Vision F.C. on the final day of the season.

Gold Stars

First things first.

Alex Asso (in yellow and gold) has been a reliable contributor to the Gold Stars story this season

By every known metric, Bibiani Gold Stars have exceeded expectations and deserve commendation.

Since their promotion to the Ghana Premier League four years ago, the narrative around the club has been about how well-oiled, the business is.

Many have, often in a rather reductive, almost dismissive tone, pointed to Dun’s Park and the investment that made it possible, as the only reason for the club’s stability.

However, a glance at the team sheet on match days quickly dispels any suggestions of a sugar-daddy club.

Led by the magnificent Frimpong Manso, who won four league titles with Kotoko between 1986 and 1995, as a center-back, Gold Stars have built their team on a mix of smart and experienced acquisitions.

Before July 2024, Ronald Frimpong had the reputation of an often busy but seldom productive winger.

When Real Tamale United (RTU) got relegated, Frimpong was held up as a symbol of the club’s dysfunctional recruitment setup.

Six months before Frimpong’s arrival, Samuel Atta Kumi was deemed as surplus to requirement by relegation-threatened Karela United.

As we speak, he has scored nine goals for Gold Stars and is the club’s top scorer. In 2023, Amon Kotei was the highest rated right back in the country. After two disciplinary issues, his Tamale City and later, Susubiribi contracts were terminated.

When Gold Stars signed him, he did not make the squad for five of their first 10 league games and was on the substitute bench for four of the other five matches.

Yet, since making his debut, Kotei has started 15 consecutive league matches.

There is Vincent Atinga too.

After winning the league with Medeama S.C. Vincent Atinga was also deemed to have been past his sell-by-date.

Two years on, Atinga, and Charles Kamar Gyamfi, who has been with the club since their days in Zone Two of the Division One League, are leading the Miner’s gold chase.

That is what Frimpong Manso has done; rehabilitating careers that were on life support or declared dead, adding players who no one cared about, to forge the most consistent team in the league.

If they can keep it together for 270 minutes more (plus added time), Gold Stars, they will become the 14th different team to have won the league.

To do that, they need to beat Asante Kotoko, Berekum Chelsea, and Accra Lions.

Chelsea’s hopes of ending the season have dissipated. Kotoko saw to that when they won the FA Cup semi-final by a goal to nil.

That defeat, and Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Accra Hearts of Oak, means Samuel Boadu’s men have also lost their last three matches in all competitions. The other was a 3-2 loss to Aduana Stars.

Familiar faces: Alex Aso (left) and Vincent Atinga (middle) train under instructions from Godwin Ablordey

So Chelsea is not exactly in form.

Chelsea’s record in the fixture is what may worry Gold Stars.

Each side has won three of the seven meetings in the league.

So there is very little to choose between the two sides.

However, Gold Stars have won the last two meetings, scoring five goals and conceding just once in the process.

What’s more, Samuel Boadu is a coach Gold Stars enjoys playing against.

Boadu was in charge when Gold Stars recorded their last two victories against Chelsea. He was also in charge of Hearts of Oak when the Miners held them to a 1-1 draw two years ago.

Boadu’s only win against The Miners was a 2-1 win in 2022.

Perhaps the most difficult of the three remaining matches is against Accra Lions.

Lions appear down and out in the relegation scrap and 16th on the log with 35 points. That means they need to win every game and hope that Young Apostles, Karela United and Basake Holy Stars all drop points in two of their last three matches.

Matches between Lions and Gold Stars are typically very close.

In seven meetings, each side has won twice while the remaining have ended in draws.

In the first round, Gold Stars recorded the most impressive away performance when they trounced Lions 3-0 in Accra.

Atta Kumi scored a hat trick on that day.

If Gold Stars are to win the league, they will need Atta Kumi to be as impeccable as he was on that day.

Not just him, but the entire team.

3 times students have been arrested for gun possession

0

Some students below the legal age have been caught in recent times for possessing guns Some students below the legal age have been caught in recent times for possessing guns

The issue of students possessing guns or other weapons on school campuses has raised serious concerns among stakeholders in the education sector.

Recent media reports of violent clashes in high schools have featured students wielding weapons such as guns, machetes, and other dangerous devices they could use to potentially harm themselves, other students, or staff.

On many occasions, the students who were arrested have actually discharged the weapons while in some instances, they have brandished them to threaten other students or whoever they sought to target.

The growing trend has raised concerns among authorities and stakeholders, underscoring the growing trend of indiscipline in schools.

Most of these incidents, which reportedly occurred in 2025, have sparked conversations about how students are able to get access to firearms and why they were not detected by their guardians, parents, or even school authorities.

The rising rate of indiscipline in schools, despite the ongoing efforts by school authorities to address the issue, have left many asking the question that – are the measures rolled out by school authorities effective, and are punitive actions stringent enough to deters others from repeating same behavior?

This GhanaWeb listicle chronicles the number of times cases of students possessing guns have been recorded in the first half of 2025.

Adventist SHS incident

A second-year student of the Adventist Senior High School at Bantama in the Ashanti Region, Suzy Adwoa Pinamang, suffered a terrible ordeal during school hours on April 4, 2025, when her fellow student allegedly shot her in the face injuring her eyes in the process.

According to the Ashanti Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service, the 16-year-old student who shot at Suzy Pinamang brought his father’s loaded pistol to school to showcase it to his classmates.

While they were examining the weapon, it accidentally discharged, striking one of the students and causing injuries to her eyes. The police further noted that the firearm was taken without parental consent.

Narrating the incident in an interview on De God Son TV on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the victim, Suzy, said she did not pay attention to her friend when he was holding the gun.

“My classmate was holding the gun in class, but I didn’t pay attention to it. During break time, I had put my head on my desk. He was then having a conversation with other classmates.

“I briefly raised the head and then the gun went off. I was bleeding profusely at the time, so, I covered my face with my hands and dashed out to seek help,” she narrated.

The case is currently in court.

Salaga SHS incident

In February 2025, a locally manufactured pistol was found and confiscated from one of the 20 students arrested for engaging in a violent clash at Salaga Senior High School, which was handled by the Salaga Divisional Police Command.

The clash, as reported by dailyguidenetwork, resulted in the injury of one student.

Osei Kyeretwie SHS incident

A 16-year-old SHS Two student of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) was arrested for possessing a firearm without lawful authority during a routine dormitory search on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at approximately 9:30 a.m.

During interrogations, the student stated that the gun belonged to his stepfather, who was also arrested by the Tafo Pankrono Divisional Police Command.

He has been granted police enquiry bail along with his stepfather, Daniel Owusu Baafi.

Introduce tax incentives and subsidies for low-carbon construction

0

Ghanaian Civil Engineer, Fawan Issah Iddi Ghanaian Civil Engineer, Fawan Issah Iddi

Ghanaian Civil Engineer, Fawan Issah Iddi has called for the introduction of tax incentives and subsidies for low-carbon constructions in the country as part of efforts to ensure a climate-resilient future for the country.

Calling for an urgent need for Ghana to integrate sustainability into its construction industry, the Civil Engineer also said that the country needed to develop and enforce national green building codes that align with the country’s climate goals, invest in capacity building for local professionals and incorporating sustainability criteria into public procurement and promote life cycle based sustainability assessment for major infrastructure projects.

Fawan spoke in an interview in Tamale on Friday.

Low-carbon construction refers to building practices that minimise the carbon footprint of a building throughout its lifecycle, from construction to demolition. It involves reducing emissions from materials, construction processes, and the building’s operational energy use.

Climate change effects in Ghana

Ghana is already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change, especially in Northern Ghana.

Last year, an over 40 day drought in Northern Ghana caused destruction to thousands of acres of farmlands, forcing the government to come in to provide relief support worth millions of Ghana cedis to affected farmers.

Experts have been warning that Ghana would be experiencing the effects climate change and have blamed the drought on the effects of climate change in the Northern Ghana.

Dr Yaw Agyeman Boafo, a climate change expert at the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies at the University of Ghana last year highlighted several urgent signs of climate change in Ghana.

He noted that rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, especially in Northern Ghana and irregular rainfall patterns were among the signs of climate change in the West African country.

Ghana’s carbon emissions

In 2020, Ghana was said to be contributing about 19,401 to Sub-Saharan Africa’s 760,868.113 carbon emissions. This figure was expected to rise in the following years.

Fawan said there is limited focus on reducing carbon emissions especially in the Ghanaian construction industry even though it remains one of the country’s most environmentally impactful industries.

“The construction sector remains one of the country’s most environmentally impactful industries, with its carbon footprint expanding rapidly. Ghana’s construction industry is largely dominated by traditional methods that are resource-intensive and carbon-heavy,” he said.

He added that “This presents a significant threat to the country’s ability to meet its climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.”

Fawan said it was important for urgent actions to be taken because “The construction sector is responsible for nearly 40% of global energy-related CO₂ emissions and over 30% of global energy consumption.”

He noted that Ghana would need to reduce the direct annual CO₂ emissions from the buildings sector from 1.9 Metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) to 0 MtCO₂e by 2032, reaching full decarbonisation.

Lakeside Estate clarifies flood reports, blames nearby fuel station for obstruction

0

The management of Lakeside Estate has pushed back against reports suggesting that the entire estate was submerged during the torrential rains that hit Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025, clarifying that the flooding was localized and not widespread across the residential enclave.

In a press statement issued on Monday, May 19, Lakeside Estate disputed media reports describing them as misleading.

“It was actually the bridge connecting Community Five and Community Six that overflowed due to the adjacent stream bursting its banks. The flooding spread to parts of the Madina Institute of Technology and homes near the university bridge—not the entire Lakeside Estate,” the statement explained.

Management further attributed the flooding to the construction of a Star Oil filling station near the bridge, which they claim has significantly narrowed the water passage and impeded the natural flow of stormwater.

“In 2023, we wrote to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and the Adentan Municipal Assembly objecting to the siting of the station at the edge of the bridge. However, the NPA in a January 2024 response granted the permit after reviewing the location,” the statement added.

According to the estate’s engineers, the obstruction caused by the fuel station is a major contributor to the flooding observed in Community Five and its environs.

In response to the latest incident, Lakeside Estate has announced a raft of immediate measures, including the desilting of all drains across the estate and renewed appeals to local authorities to reassess the positioning of the fuel station.

“We have issued firm instructions to our Public Works Department to clear all drainage systems. Residents are also being sensitized to regularly clean the gutters in front of their homes to ensure free flow of water,” the company said.

We got many things wrong; Please forgive us – Bawumia begs Ghanaians

0

Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has acknowledged the shortcomings of the NPP-led administration, offering an apology to Ghanaians while appealing for renewed trust ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Speaking at an engagement in London, Dr Bawumia admitted that although the NPP had made significant strides in governance, it had also made notable mistakes.

In a candid and reflective tone, he said: “The NPP did a lot of work, there’s no doubt about that, but we did not get everything right. We got quite a few things wrong, and I think that, on my own behalf, on behalf of the party and the government, I apologise to all of you for us not getting the things right that we should have gotten.”

He assured Ghanaians that the party has taken stock of its errors and is committed to doing better if given another mandate.

“I believe that if by the grace of God, we have another opportunity I believe that we will get many things right, because we have learnt the lessons of where we are going,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia’s remarks follows the NPP’s abysmal performance in the 2024 elections.

Ken Ashigbey calls for arrest of Amenfi East MP [Audio]

0

The Convener of the Anti-Galamsey Coalition, Ken Ashigbey, has called for the immediate arrest of Amenfi East Member of Parliament, Nicholas Amankwah, following reports that the MP pleaded on behalf of illegal miners operating in Wassa Japa within his constituency.

Environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor revealed that during a military-led operation targeting the galamsey enclave, Mr. Amankwah defended the illegal miners.

Reacting to the reports in an interview on , Dr. Ashigbey condemned the MP’s actions, saying they undermine efforts to combat illegal mining.

He cited Act 995, Section 99 (2b), urging authorities to take swift action against the lawmaker.

“Under Act 995, this MP who is encouraging people although he knows about the illegality and is doing nothing about it, he must be arrested. It breaks my heart that no action has been taken against these self-confessed criminals, and the MP is also defending them despite the devastation,” Dr. Ashigbey stated.

He stressed the urgent need for the government to intensify the fight against galamsey and bring it to an end.

Lali X Lola petitions communications ministry over unpaid Boomplay royalties

Lali X Lola petitions communications ministry Lali X Lola petitions communications ministry

Fast rising, Ghanaian music duo, Lali X Lola, have petitioned the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, over unpaid royalties from digital music platform Boomplay.

According to them, they have not received any revenue from their music streams on the platform since April 2023.

In a petition dated May 19, 2025, the artistes expressed concern over the lack of transparency and accountability by Boomplay, stating that they have made several attempts to get answers but have been met with silence.

“Our distributors have told us that we haven’t received any payments or detailed reports from Boomplay for over a year. This is despite the fact that our music is still actively being streamed on the platform,” part of the statement read.

The musicians said the situation is frustrating and unfair, especially considering the time, money, and energy that go into creating music.

They explained that although platforms like Boomplay help artistes reach new fans and grow their brand, they must also be responsible and ensure musicians are paid what they are due.

Lali X Lola called on the minister to investigate Boomplay’s system of paying artistes and to introduce proper regulations for all digital service providers (DSPs) operating in Ghana.

“We respectfully urge your office to investigate this issue and help establish better regulatory oversight over DSPs operating within Ghana’s digital and creative economy,” they added.

Watch as Sogakope Zongo youths destroy ghettos housing criminals

Some concerned youths in the Zongo community of Sogakope have launched an operation dubbed ‘Operation Clean the Zongo’ to clamp down on rising crimes in the area.

The group began demolishing makeshift structures and ghettos believed to be sheltering criminals following a recent spate of thefts that left residents anxious and frustrated.

Sogakope, the capital of the South Tongu District in the Volta Region, has long been known for its scenic river tourism, mass bread production, and the Lower Volta Bridge, which connects the town to Sokpoe.

In recent weeks, however, the town has been grappling with a surge in petty and serious crime, with Zongo areas reportedly becoming hotspots for such activities.

According to a video post by metrotvonline.com, the structures being torn down were not residential homes but illegal hideouts used by suspected criminals.

They argued that criminal elements have been taking advantage of the neglected and poorly monitored spaces to coordinate thefts, drug use, and other unlawful activities that endanger the peace of the community.

“This is one of the ghettos in the Zongo. Spoil everything when they come, they’ll know there was action here. We can’t sit back and watch our community become a breeding ground for crime,” the report stated.
