Accra Chiefs Demand Probe After ‘Faceless’ Demolition on Reclaimed Lands

Traditional leaders in the communities of Kweiman, Danfa, and Amlenhia in Accra are demanding urgent government action following a mysterious demolition exercise carried out on a disputed parcel of land recently returned to them by the state.

The land, part of the defunct government dairy farm established in the 1960s, was released back to the chiefs following a white paper issued by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. The document granted 40 percent of the acquired land—initially taken without compensation—back to the original custodians.

However, tensions have been mounting since the release. The chiefs claim that some individuals, allegedly with connections in government, have been working behind the scenes to reduce their rightful share of the land. To address these concerns, the current administration ordered an audit to bring clarity to the land’s demarcation and usage.

But just three days into the audit process, bulldozers moved in and demolished several structures already developed under the supervision of the chiefs. No court order was presented, and no prior notice was given.

Nii Djanie Tsuru Afutu Brempong IV, Chief of Danfa, expressed shock at the development, describing it as a deliberate act meant to frustrate the audit and dispossess the chiefs of their land.

> “This is not just a demolition. It is a calculated attempt by certain selfish individuals to frustrate the ongoing audit and undermine our rightful claim to the land,” he said.
The chiefs suspect some elders from the neighbouring Oyarifa community may be involved. According to them, these individuals had previously tried to claim portions of the land but were rejected based on official records.

Nii Djani Klu, spokesperson for the chiefs, called on the Inspector General of Police to probe the conduct of officers who supervised the demolition exercise.

> “We have reasons to believe some individuals from Oyarifa orchestrated this. We’re calling on the IGP to investigate the police officers who supervised this illegal act without any court order,” he stated.

Oyarifa Chief’s Office Condemns Demolition

In a swift response, the spokesperson for the Chief of Oyarifa, Nii Worlangoo, distanced the chief from the incident. He clarified that only one family from Oyarifa acted independently and that the chief neither sanctioned nor supported the exercise.

> “This action was not sanctioned by the Oyarifa chief. It was carried out by just one family, acting on their own. We condemn the demolition and any act that seeks to disrupt the peaceful relations between our communities,” Nii Worlangoo stated.
As of the time of filing this report, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has not issued a public statement on the matter.

I’m the Messi of the NPP

Former Communications Director for Ghana Gas Company, Ernest Owusu Bempah Former Communications Director for Ghana Gas Company, Ernest Owusu Bempah

Former Communications Director for Ghana Gas and leader of the Fixing the Country Movement, Mr. Ernest Owusu Bempah, has declared himself the “Messi of the NPP”.

He has insisted that no one in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) can rise to the presidency without his support.

“I’m not saying I’m God, and I’m not bragging,” he stated during a recent interview on Oyerepa FM/TV.

“But I have a certain grace, a gift, that makes me indispensable in the NPP. Nobody — and I mean nobody — can become president in this country on the ticket of the NPP without my blessing,” he stated.

His comments come at a time when the NPP is still healing from the political heat of its 2024 primaries, which saw a fierce contest between Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and outspoken MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.

The two heavyweights locked horns in one of the keenly contested internal elections in the party’s history, a showdown that left clear factions within the party base.

While Dr. Bawumia eventually emerged as the NPP’s Flagbearer, Kennedy Agyapong’s strong grassroots support and unapologetic campaign style shook the very foundation of the party, making unity a pressing issue heading into the December 2024 general elections.

In the midst of this, Owusu Bempah’s claims appear to stake a spiritual and strategic authority over the party’s fate.

“If anyone doubts what I’m saying, they should check with the spiritual realm. I am not just talking — this is a reality people don’t understand,” he added.

Known for his fiery rhetoric and loyalty to the NPP, Bempah’s recent remarks will likely spark debate within the party, particularly among supporters of both Bawumia and Agyapong, many of whom are still nursing wounds from the primaries.

Ahmed Musa Marries Fourth Wife, Moriki In Kano

0

Super Eagles star Ahmed Musa has reportedly married for the fourth time, tying the knot with Asmau Moriki in a private ceremony held in Kano State.

The wedding, which remained low-key and away from public attention, marks another chapter in the personal life of the Nigerian international, who is well-known not just for his football prowess but also for his dynamic personal journey.

Musa, 31, began his marital journey in 2013 when he married Jamila. Their union, however, ended in 2017 after four years and produced two children. Not long after his divorce, he married Juliet Ejue, a native of Ogoja in Cross River State. Despite a promising start, that relationship also ended after a few years.

In 2021, the former Leicester City and CSKA Moscow forward entered his third marriage with Mariam, which was celebrated in a quiet ceremony attended by family and close friends.

Now, with his marriage to Asmau Moriki, Musa has added a fourth chapter to his marital history. Although details about his new bride remain scarce, the wedding has generated conversations on social media, with fans expressing a mix of congratulatory messages and curiosity.

Throughout his career, Musa has maintained a reputation for being deeply religious and family-oriented. Despite the ups and downs in his personal life, he remains one of Nigeria’s most respected footballers, having captained the national team and featured prominently in multiple FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Beyond football, Musa is also a philanthropist and entrepreneur. He owns several businesses, including a sports center and fuel station in Kano. His off-field achievements, coupled with his on-field contributions, have made him a prominent figure in Nigerian sports.

PSG vs Inter Milan LIVE: Champions League final score, radio & live updates

0

  • This is the first ever competitive meeting between Inter and Paris SG. It’s also the second European Cup/UEFA Champions League final between an Italian and a French side, after Marseille beat Milan 1-0 in 1993 – the only time a French side has ever won the trophy. That final was also held in Munich.

  • This is Inter’s seventh appearance in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League final, winning the trophy three times (1964, 1965 and 2010). They did lose their last final match, going down 1-0 against Manchester City in 2023.

  • This is Paris SG’s second ever appearance in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League final, losing 1-0 against Bayern Munich in 2019-20 previously. They remain the last French side to win a major European trophy – the 1995-96 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

  • French clubs have only won two of their 15 major European finals: one out of seven in European Cup/UEFA Champions League, one out of three in UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and none in five attempts in UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League.

  • This will be the fifth European Cup/UEFA Champions League final to be held in Munich. The victors in each of the previous four were winning the trophy for the very first time, a run Paris SG will seek to continue (Nottingham Forest in 1979, Marseille in 1993, Borussia Dortmund in 1997, Chelsea in 2012).

  • Internazionale have scored 26 UEFA Champions League goals this season; their joint most ever in a major European season, also scoring 26 in 2002-03. They’ve scored two or more goals in all six knockout games and could be the third side to score 2+ goals in every knockout game including the final in a season, along with Real Madrid in 1959-60 (7 games) and Milan in 1993-94 (2 games).

  • This season has seen Paris SG both win their most games (10) and score their most goals (33) in a single major European campaign. They’ve also registered their most shots per game (18.6) in a UEFA Champions League season on record since 2003-04.

  • Internazionale have trailed for just 1.2% of their UEFA Champions League matches this season, falling behind in three games but never for more than 370 seconds in any of them – 285 seconds against Bayer Leverkusen in December, 370 against Bayern Munich in April and 343 against Barcelona in May. They’ve also spent the highest percentage of their time winning (50.8%).

  • Only Atlético Madrid (43.5%) have handed a higher share of minutes to players aged 30+ in the UEFA Champions League this season than Internazionale (43.3%), whose 6,151 minutes by players aged 30+ is the most by a team since Juventus in 2016-17 (6,186). All of the 1,350 minutes Paris SG have given to players aged 30 or over has been by just one player, Marquinhos.

  • Paris SG have currently played the fourth-most games (167) without ever winning the European Cup/UEFA Champions League since it began in 1955, behind Arsenal (211), Dynamo Kyiv (185) and Atlético Madrid (176). A win in this game would see them have the most games before winning their first trophy, with Man City the current most on 116 before they won their 117th game in the final against Inter in 2023.

  • Internazionale manager Simone Inzaghi lost the 2023 UEFA Champions League final and is looking to avoid becoming the ninth manager to lose two or more finals. The only two managers to lose their first final but win their second are Fabio Capello (lost 1993, won 1994) and Thomas Tuchel (lost 2020, won 2021).

  • Paris SG manager Luis Enrique – who won the UEFA Champions League in 2015 with Barcelona – is looking to become the sixth manager to win the trophy with two different clubs, along with Carlo Ancelotti (Milan, Real Madrid), Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich), Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid, Bayern Munich), José Mourinho (Porto and Inter) and Pep Guardiola (Barcelona and Man City).

  • João Neves has applied the most high-intensity pressures to opponents in this season’s UEFA Champions League (824), while he’s also made 57 tackles for Paris SG. On record since 2006-07, the only players to make more in a season are Gennaro Gattuso (64 in 2006-07, 59 in 2007-08) and Javier Mascherano (70 in 2007-08).

  • Paris SG midfielder Vitinha has completed the most passes under high-intensity pressure from opponents (665) in this season’s UEFA Champions League. He’s also completed the most passes overall (1,222), with only Xavi in 2012-13 (1,299) and 2010-11 (1,244) ever completing more in a season on record since 2003-04.

  • Internazionale’s Francesco Acerbi – who scored their crucial late equaliser in the semi-final against Barcelona – could be the fourth oldest outfield player to start a UEFA Champions League final (37 years, 110 days), behind Paolo Maldini for Milan in 2007 (38 years, 331 days), Lothar Matthäus for Bayern Munich in 1999 (38 years, 66 days) and Ryan Giggs for Man Utd in 2011 (37 years, 180 days).

  • Ousmane Dembélé has been directly involved in 12 UEFA Champions League goals this season (8 goals, 4 assists); the most ever by a Paris SG player in one campaign, while only Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2013-14 (10) has scored more.

  • Internazionale’s Lautaro Martínez has scored in the last 16, quarter-final and semi-final of this season’s UEFA Champions League. Only five players have scored in those stages plus the final in one season – Frank Lampard in 2007-08, Diego Milito in 2009-10, Lionel Messi in 2010-11, Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013-14 and Sadio Mané in 2017-18. He’s also aiming to become the first Inter player with 10 goals in a major European season (currently nine).

  • In this season’s UEFA Champions League, the most line-breaking passes from one player to another while breaking a defensive line have been from Paris SG’s Ousmane Dembélé to Achraf Hakimi (13); six more than any other duo. Dembélé has created 35 chances this season, the most by a French player since Jerome Rothen in 2003-04 (45), while Hakimi’s 34 chances created is the most by an African player on record (since 2003-04).

  • Only two players have completed more passes in this season’s UEFA Champions League than PSG captain Marquinhos (1,051), who featured in the 2020 final defeat to Bayern Munich. The final could be his 107th appearance in the competition, with only Gianluigi Buffon and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (124 each) playing more games in Champions League history without winning the trophy.

  • Based on the quality of shots on target faced (using xG), Internazionale’s Yann Sommer has prevented more goals than any other goalkeeper in the UEFA Champions League this season (+5.9 – 10 goals conceded from 15.9 xG on target faced, excluding own goals).

  • ‘EOCO’s treatment of Wontumi an abuse of power reminiscent of junta era’

    0

Professor Kingsley Nyarko is the Member of Parliament for Kwadaso Professor Kingsley Nyarko is the Member of Parliament for Kwadaso

Member of Parliament for Kwadaso and former Deputy Education Minister, Professor Kingsley Nyarko, has strongly criticised the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) for its handling of the case involving Chairman Wontumi.

Professor Nyarko described EOCO’s actions as a “total abuse of power” and “political intimidation,” reminiscent of Ghana’s military junta era.

He expressed particular concern over the ‘outrageous’ bail condition of 50 million Ghanaian cedis, which he believes violates Article 14(4) of the Constitution.

The MP urged President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and put an end to what he termed “political persecution” and “majoritarian tyranny.”

He emphasised the need for the government to focus on critical national priorities rather than engaging in politically motivated harassment.

While acknowledging that no one is above the law, Professor Nyarko stressed the importance of treating everyone fairly and affording them due process.

He warned that the current approach risks undermining Ghana’s democracy and reverting to oppressive governance styles of the past.

Referring to historical precedents, he recalled the 2003 case involving Victor Salome, where bail was granted following proper legal procedures, underscoring the need for consistency and fairness in the application of justice.

The MP further emphasised that the government should focus on critical national priorities such as job creation, improving living standards, and ensuring reliable power supply rather than engaging in politically motivated harassment.

Professor Nyarko also highlighted that no individual, including Chairman Wontumi, is above the law.

However, he insisted that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and afforded due process.

He cautioned against conflating unrelated issues such as Wontumi’s public display of wealth with criminality, as suggested by some NDC supporters, and called for investigations and court proceedings to be transparent and just.

Professor Nyarko called on all stakeholders to recommit to democracy, transparency, and respect for human rights, emphasising that this kind of political intimidation and abuse of power must stop to maintain peace, stability, and trust in institutions.

Ghana’s mining sector posts record GH₵17.7bn revenue in 2024

    0

Ghana’s mining sector contributed a record GH₵17.7 billion in revenue to the government in 2024, marking a 51.2% increase from GH₵11.7 billion in 2023, according to the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

Dividends paid to the state soared by over 600%, reaching GH₵1.03 billion, highlighting the sector’s growing role as a cornerstone of domestic revenue generation.

Speaking at the Chamber’s 97th Annual General Meeting, President of the Chamber, Edem Michael Akafia, revealed that the mining industry’s contribution to domestic revenue rose from 8.8% to 9.6%, adding that its share of total government revenue increased from 8.6% in 2023 to 9.5% in 2024.

“This upturn boosted the mining sector’s share of direct domestic taxes from 22.7% in 2023 to 24.3% in 2024,” Akafia noted.

He noted that mineral royalties also experienced substantial growth, climbing by 76.7% from GH₵2.8 billion in 2023 to GH₵4.9 billion in 2024.

“This reflects the rise in gross mineral sales, on which royalty payments are assessed. Consequently, royalties’ share of the sector’s total fiscal contributions rose from 23.7% in 2023 to 27.7% in 2024,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Chief Director at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Innocent Haligah, urged stakeholders in the mining industry to collaborate with the Ghana Gold Board to promote a safer mining environment.

“The Gold Board has been established as part of efforts to address challenges in the sector. Beyond regulation, it symbolizes the value of our national currency, and we expect all stakeholders to work together to ensure a safe and responsible mining environment,” he stated.

Haligah also stressed the need to focus on strategic areas such as local content development, where the majority of mining sector employees are Ghanaians, and the promotion of value addition to mineral resources.

Brazilian warship docks in Tema to boost Ghana-Brazil naval cooperation

    0

The Ghana Eastern Naval Command has welcomed the Brazilian Navy’s Guinex V Defender, a frigate-class warship, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen maritime security and foster naval cooperation between Ghana and Brazil.

The vessel, which docked at the Port of Tema on Saturday, May 31 2025, will remain in Ghanaian waters for four days.

The visit is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing training opportunities for Ghanaian naval officers, particularly in combating piracy, illegal fishing, and other maritime threats in the Gulf of Guinea and beyond.

The arrival of the 48-year-old Guinex V Defender underscores the shared commitment of both nations to improving operational capabilities, supporting state-led maritime efforts, and deepening diplomatic ties through naval collaboration.

Described as a sports-class frigate with advanced self-defense systems, the Guinex V Defender is equipped to operate in high-threat environments and defend itself against external attacks.

During its stay, joint military exercises will be conducted to improve operational coordination, strengthen bilateral relations, and facilitate the exchange of best practices in maritime defense.

In an interview with the media, the Brazilian Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Mariana Madeira, said the vessel’s arrival represents a significant step in strengthening ties between the two countries.

“It means a lot to strengthen the ties between our countries because it’s naval diplomacy. Through this ship, we are actually in Ghana in a floating embassy. We expect that this exercise, Guinex V, will bring our countries together through themes like security in the Gulf of Guinea, capacity building of our navies, and dialogue between the two sides,” she noted.

For his part, the Commanding Officer of the Guinex V Defender, Awmeida Matos, highlighted the importance of training Ghanaian naval officers to enhance safety at sea.

Goldbod is already doing wonders – Mahama praises CEO Sammy Gyamfi

    0

President John Mahama has praised the CEO of the Ghana GoldBoard (Goldbod), Sammy Gyamfi, for what he describes as an impressive start to the new institution’s operations.

The Ghana GoldBoard, formerly known as the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), was officially launched on April 2, 2025, with a mandate to oversee and regulate gold trading activities in the country.

Barely weeks into its establishment, the Goldbod has reportedly made significant strides, achieving results that President Mahama has hailed as remarkable.

“Mr. Sammy Gyamfi is the Chief Executive of the Ghana Goldbod that is doing wonders already,” the President said while introducing the NDC National Communications Officer during a speech in the Ahafo Region as part of his national “Thank You” tour.

There has been a wave of public support and commendation for Mr Gyamfi, with many attributing the recent appreciation of the cedi in part to Goldbod’s performance under his leadership.

The local currency, which reached a high of nearly GH¢16 to the US dollar last year, has now appreciated to around GH¢10 to the dollar.

This development has been met with widespread optimism among citizens and market observers.

Meanwhile, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has reiterated the central bank’s commitment to sustaining the cedi’s rebound.

He emphasised ongoing efforts to strengthen the local currency and maintain its competitiveness against major global currencies

‘I never planned to be a politician’

Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey

The Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has recounted how she unexpectedly found herself in politics, attributing her journey to divine orchestration and community influence.

Speaking in a recent interview with Joy News, she admitted that politics was never part of her plans.

“If it is not divine orchestration, then I will say that I stumbled on it. It was not something I planned for. Sometimes, people who know me from the past express their surprised over the fact that I ventured into politics. They never anticipated that I would be associated with politics, because I was an introvert when I was growing up,” the Member of Parliament for Krowor said.

Recounting her journey in politics, she stated that it all started with her involvement in church outreaches and charitable works.

As a devoted member of the Assemblies of God Church, she said her activities in the Christian and civil society spaces eventually led her to coastal communities, where she worked closely with fishmongers.

It was during this period that her life took an unexpected turn.

“I was teaching them about leadership. We were having a modular training program on women’s leadership. Then the opportunity came for me to serve as a Chief Executive… They said, ‘You’ve been teaching us that we can start from the local government level, and there is this opportunity, so we want you to go so that we know it is doable.’ That completely threw me a curveball,” she recalled.

Faced with the choice to step up or risk disappointing the very women she had inspired, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey embraced the challenge and entered the race for the position.

“I also knew it was a challenge. If I don’t take it and go for it or even try, they were going to get discouraged. So, I took on the challenge and contested. They were with me throughout. I mean, they never left me. Sometimes they would go with me,” she said.

Although she did not secure the appointment at the time, due to her perceived lack of partisan visibility, she took the outcome in stride.

The panel believed they needed someone who was more immersed in the political structure and well-versed in the dynamics at the local level.

“I didn’t feel bad. I took it in good faith but after subsequent attempts they realised that I had pushed enough and gave me the nod,” she said.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at the funeral Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at the funeral

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday joined thousands of mourners at the final funeral rights of the late Paramount Chief of the Mion Traditional Area of Dagbon, Mionlana Abdulai Mahamadu at Mion in the Northern Region.

The ex-President was accompanied by the former Vice President and 2024 Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, 2024 Running Mate, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, former Finance Minister, Adam Mohammed Amin, and former NPP Members of Parliament to bid farewell to the late traditional ruler.

His visit to mourn with the King and people of Dagbon further deepened his relationship with the Dagbon Kingdom, where he was also enskinned as the Dagbon Malti-Naa for his role in the restoration of peace, after decades of the protracted Abudu and Andani chieftaincy conflict of Dagbon.

A powerful delegation of Abudu Chiefs led by the Paramount Chief of Karaga, Kari Naa Nantogmah Abdulai, visited the former President at his Nima residence in Accra, to formally inform him about the funeral a few weeks ago.

Mionlana Abdulai was enskinned by Ndan Ya-Naa Abukari II after the performance of the funeral of his father, Ya Naa Mahamadu IV, in January 2019.

Born in 1974, the late Mionlana was enskinned as the Boling-Lana at the age of 14, after the passing of his father, the late Yaa Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV.

He was enskinned as Mion Lana on March 3, 2019, by Ya Naa Abukari II, following the successful implementation of the Dagbon peace pact in January 2019.

As Mionlana, Naa Abdulai was one of three Princes of Dagbon who were in line to succeed Ndan Ya Naa Abukari, occupying the Mion gate-skin.

He died in August 2022 at the age of 48.

His funeral was climaxed on Thursday at the Mion palace, where his eldest son and Regent of Mion, Gbanglana Alhassan Abdulai, was ushered by family elders to circumambulate the palace as part of how Dagbon royal funerals are climaxed.

Chiefs and mourners from both the Abudu and Andanis graced the occasion to bid farewell to the Dagbon prince and celebrate his life.

Ghana Labour export programme to be launched soon- Mahama

NPP needs disciplined, results-oriented leaders — Akim Swedru MP

The Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko The Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko

The Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has called for a more rigorous vetting process for individuals seeking to contest for leadership roles within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s internal structures ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on the need to uphold integrity, competence, and professionalism in party leadership, Osei Nyarko stressed that aspirants from polling station executives to national officers must not be allowed to contest solely based on interest or popularity.

“People must not just be allowed to contest for executive positions. They should be able to clearly demonstrate what they are bringing onboard,” he said.

In a metrotvonline.com report on May 31, 2025, Osei Nyarko stressed that candidates must show concrete plans and the capacity to execute the responsibilities attached to their desired roles.

According to him, the selection of party leaders should be based on merit and guided by qualities such as commitment, discipline, hard work, and integrity.

“If a potential candidate cannot demonstrate or show signs of any of these attributes, then he or she isn’t the right person to serve in that position,” he indicated.

Osei Nyarko’s remarks come at a time when the NPP is preparing for internal elections, which are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the party’s performance in the 2028 polls.

His comments are widely seen as a call to instill greater accountability and efficiency in the party’s leadership selection processes.

However, he urged party delegates and stakeholders to prioritise the long-term interests of the NPP by choosing leaders who can deliver tangible results and contribute meaningfully to the party’s growth at all levels.

Mahama orders immediate completion of Maaban-Goaso Highway

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry for Roads and Highways to urgently prioritise the rehabilitation and completion of the Maaban-Goaso Highway.

The directive, issued during President Mahama’s “Thank You Tour” in Goaso on Saturday, May 31, is aimed at improving transportation and boosting economic activity in the Ahafo Region.

He emphasised that the highway holds significant potential to unlock investment and enhance trade across the area.

“We will not abandon projects that were begun by the past government. We’re here to finish what we started and to build what is needed. We will soon have contractors back at work,” President Mahama stated.

He reaffirmed his commitment to continuing development projects, regardless of which administration initiated them, stressing that “governance is continuity.”

President Mahama also announced that an inventory of all abandoned and uncompleted infrastructure projects has been undertaken.

“We have taken inventory of all abandoned and uncompleted projects by all previous governments,” he said.

Based on this, he has tasked the Ministry of Roads and Highways to ensure the swift completion of the Maaban-Goaso Highway and other key roads in the region.

“I have directed the Ministry of Roads and Highways to prioritise the completion of the Maaban-Goaso Highway. This is a crucial link for mobility and trade across the region. In addition to the urban roads in Goaso, Kenyase, and Acherensua, these town roads should be upgraded to support urban growth and improve transport safety,” he said.

The completion of these road projects is expected to enhance mobility, facilitate regional trade, and support economic development in the Ahafo Region.

My Dad Said It’s Either My Mom Stay At Home or She Goes for Treatment & I Forget About School-Actor Yemi Awomodu

    0

Nollywood actor Yemi Awomodu has opened up about a deeply emotional and life-altering moment from his youth, when a tragic family incident forced him to choose between his education and his mother’s survival.

In an interview on the Talk To B show, Awomodu recalled how he had just gained admission into the Federal University of Technology, Akure, to study Agricultural Engineering.

“I remember the first time I was going to Offa, Kwara State, after my secondary school. I was one of the first five students from my secondary school who gained admission at the first attempt,” he said.

His dreams, however, took a sudden turn when his mother was involved in a hit-and-run accident, leaving her with two broken legs.

“I was looking at my Mom then and feeling very sorry for her, but I was also eager to go to school,” Awomodu said.

When he approached his father to ask about leaving for school, he was confronted with a heartbreaking reality.

“So he looked at me and said it’s either my mom stays home without treatment or she goes for treatment and you forget about school.”

That moment defined Awomodu’s path. “So instead of packing my bags to go to school, I had to pack it to the hospital and I took my first job as a cleaner,” he shared.

His story is one of sacrifice, resilience, and the difficult choices many young Nigerians face. It also sheds light on the harsh economic realities that impact educational journeys and family life.

Protest by NPP MPs unreasonable – Kumadoe

    0

Security consultant Richard Kumadoe has described the recent protest by Members of Parliament from the Minority Caucus and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as politically motivated and unjustified.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, May 31, Kumadoe said while citizens have the right to express their views, the actions taken at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in protest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako’s detention were not a reasonable response.

“At the point where the bail term was slapped on our brother Wontumi, two options came up: either you engage the investigators for something to be done or go to court for a review. What we saw at the space in the office of EOCO was not a reasonable action. It was pure politics.

“If EOCO breached the rights of our brother Wontumi, I will be the first person to say it. EOCO has the option to take him to court, but they also have the option to engage him.”

Kumadoe’s comments come amid growing controversy surrounding the arrest and continued detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, who serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP.

Chairman Wontumi was invited on Tuesday, May 27, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service and investigated for alleged financial irregularities involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM BANK).

He was later picked up by  EOCO, which is conducting a separate investigation into possible financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. EOCO granted him bail on Wednesday, May 28, setting the amount at GH₵50 million with two justified sureties.

In response, Minority MPs staged a dramatic sit-in outside EOCO’s head office in Accra, calling for his immediate release. The group, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, marched from Parliament to EOCO and occupied part of the street in front of the agency’s premises.

The protest brought vehicular traffic to a halt and prompted a heavy police presence. Chants of “justice for Wontumi” and accusations of political persecution echoed throughout the scene, as the MPs accused EOCO and other state institutions of targeting political opponents.

Kumadoe, however, insisted that the proper channels were available to challenge the bail conditions, and the display at EOCO’s premises only served to politicise a legal process.

“As a country, we must allow investigative bodies to operate within the framework of the law. If there are genuine concerns about rights violations, those issues can be addressed through legal avenues, not street protests,” he added.

GHAART President champions women’s empowerment in heavy duty operations

Abdul Rahman Suleiman, National President GHAART speaking to the press Abdul Rahman Suleiman, National President GHAART speaking to the press

The National President of the Heavy Duty Artisans Association of Ghana (GHAART), Abdul Rahman Suleiman, has reaffirmed the association’s commitment to empower women and reduce unemployment by providing practical skills training in traditionally male-dominated trades.

He made these remarks during an interview with the media at the association’s 1st anniversary celebration held at the NVTI campus in Kumasi.

“GHAART’s core mission is to challenge societal norms that restrict women from pursuing careers in fields such as mechanics and heavy-duty trades”. According to President Suleiman, the association actively encourages women to break down gender stereotypes and follow their passions, offering them a path to financial independence and economic empowerment.

“Many women in our communities face economic disadvantages, often limited to ‘white collar’ jobs that are not always accessible,” Suleiman explained. “Our training programs equip them with practical skills that open doors to new opportunities and help reduce unemployment”, he underscored.

According to him, the association’s initiatives include mentorship programs that connect aspiring female mechanics with successful women in the industry, providing guidance and inspiration.

Training ranges from short-term courses lasting three months, covering basic skills like oil changes and brake servicing, to more advanced one-year programs focusing on complex repairs.

“This curriculum blends hands-on experience with a strong theoretical foundation, ensuring trainees grasp the scientific principles behind their work”. He revealed.

He further disclosed that GHAART’s inclusive approach welcomes individuals from diverse educational backgrounds, from those without formal schooling to graduates with advanced degrees.

Suleiman cited the example of Bashiru, a trainee with a master’s degree, who is now building a career in heavy-duty mechanics.

The association is also forging partnerships with companies such as Seahorse to create employment opportunities for its graduates.

Suleiman emphasized the importance of public education in changing perceptions about women in non-traditional careers and highlighted ongoing efforts to collaborate with government bodies to combat unemployment and foster national development.

As a passionate advocate for the program, Suleiman Abdul Rahman, who is also a lecturer, brings his own expertise to the table.

Holding a Master’s degree in Mobile Engineering, he remains deeply involved in both government and private sector initiatives, demonstrating a strong personal commitment to community service and empowerment.

During the event, Dorcas Afriyie, a beneficiary of the program, shared her inspiring journey. A communications graduate from KNUST, Dorcas has enrolled at NVTI, Kumasi, to train as a tractor operator, a role traditionally dominated by men.

“I want to be a role model for other women,” Dorcas said. “It’s never too late to follow your dreams and break societal barriers. I am proud to say, ‘My mother is a tractor operator,’ and I hope to inspire others to do the same.”

Meanwhile, the members of the Heavy Duty Artisans Association of Ghana have revealed how they will continue to make significant strides in empowering women, promoting gender equality, and equipping individuals with valuable skills to transform their lives and communities.

Mahama pledges 200,000 hectares to boost cocoa production

    0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a bold plan to expand Ghana’s cocoa sector by adding 200,000 hectares of cocoa farms to the country’s production capacity.

The president, who is currently touring the Ahafo Region as part of his national Thank You tour, announced on Saturday, May 31, emphasising his government’s commitment to reviving the once-thriving cocoa industry.

“Plans are underway to revamp the collapsed cocoa sector. Incentives will be provided to our hardworking farmers to increase cocoa production. We aim to add 200,000 hectares of cocoa to Ghana’s output to increase the income of our farmers,”he stated.

He further disclosed that the Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Randy Abbey, had informed him that a new cocoa producer price will be announced in August, which he assured farmers would be “a very good price.”

“So those of you who do not have cocoa farms, go and start looking for land and start planting cocoa,” he encouraged.

Ghana’s cocoa sector has faced significant setbacks in recent years, including declining yields, smuggling, and pricing challenges. The president’s renewed focus on cocoa is expected to not only restore confidence among farmers but also help boost foreign exchange earnings and job creation in cocoa-growing communities.

The proposed expansion is seen as a key step toward transforming agriculture and ensuring economic sustainability through strategic investment in one of Ghana’s most valuable export commodities.

UHAS Council Chairman Prof. Kodzo Gavua urges graduates to serve with passion, integrity, and innovation

    0

The Council Chairman of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Prof. Kodzo Gavua, has delivered a stirring call to action to the university’s newest graduates, urging them to enter the workforce with integrity, confidence, and an unrelenting commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery.

Addressing the second session of the 9th Congregation Ceremony of UHAS, Prof. Gavua congratulated the 957 graduates, mainly sandwich and postgraduate students, who form part of the total 2,476 graduates of the 2023/2024 academic year.

He reminded them that their journey to this point was not by chance but by choice, driven by dedication, resilience, and a deep desire to serve humanity.

“You dared to start even when it meant returning to textbooks and lecture slides after long days of work or caring for loved ones. You pushed forward not because it was easy, but because it mattered,” he stated.

He described the health and allied professions as vocations of service, trust, and impact, stating that the graduates’ skills will play a vital role in advancing Ghana’s health systems amidst global disruptions.

He noted that beyond technical competence, it is empathy, maturity, and the ability to connect with people that will define their success in their respective fields.

Prof. Gavua reaffirmed UHAS’ mission to remain a hub for lifelong learning, especially for nurses, midwives, public health practitioners, and others seeking to upgrade their skills for better conditions of service.

He emphasised the need to continuously improve the student experience and called on university management to pay special attention to the needs of excluded groups such as nursing mothers and pregnant students.

He proudly stated that UHAS has, since its first graduation on July 23, 2016, produced over 11,000 health professionals who are delivering quality healthcare across the country.

On infrastructural developments, Prof. Gavua updated the audience on key ongoing projects. He announced that Phase One of the Sokode Teaching Road Project and 5.3 kilometers of internal roads are significantly delayed, making access to campus difficult.

However, he expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to releasing funds to the executing agencies the Ghana Highways Authority and Ministry of Roads and Highways to complete the project.

He also highlighted the successful completion and use of the China-Aid Phase Two Project, which includes the School of Nursing and Midwifery and central administration blocks.

He expressed appreciation to the Chinese Government for its grant and to the Government of Ghana for its counterpart support.

Prof. Gavua called on both government and the business community to urgently support student accommodation efforts, given the rising student population and the pressing demand for hostel facilities.

To the graduating class, Prof. Gavua declared “Let your knowledge heal, your voice advocate, and your presence inspire. Despite the frustrations and challenges that may come your way, be passionate about your profession and remain open to learning and growth.”

He reminded the graduates that their communities are diverse and complex, but they now possess the perspective, purpose, and qualification to not only treat illness but champion wellness, equity, and positive change.

Urging them to forge relationships with people of integrity, he cautioned against pride and complacency, emphasising humility and continuous learning as key to professional excellence.

Prof. Gavua concluded his address by officially declaring the congregation duly assembled in his capacity as Chairman of the UHAS Council.

“Go confidently into the world. Be worthy ambassadors of UHAS and always remember you have already overcome many challenges. Let that be your proof that you can overcome even more.”

Gary Nimako rejects claims that bail variation application delayed release

    0

Director of Legal Affairs for NPP, Gary Nimako Marfo Director of Legal Affairs for NPP, Gary Nimako Marfo

The Director of Legal Affairs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gary Nimako Marfo, has rejected claims that an application for bail variation filed on behalf of Chairman Wontumi, was responsible for delays in executing his bail.

Speaking in an interview on Movement TV monitored by GhanaWeb on Saturday May 31, 2025, he narrated the sequence of events leading up to the filing of the application, indicating that at about 3:00 PM on Friday, May 20, 2025, Chairman Wontumi’s aide approached him regarding the status of the bail conditions.

“I inquired whether the bail had been satisfied, and he said no. He then mentioned a variation application,” he said.

According to him, Chairman Wontumi’s wife also contacted him directly. “Based on the information available at the time, I told them I would proceed to file the application for the bail variation,” he stated.

However, Gary Nimako said he was later taken aback when suggestions began circulating that the variation application had somehow obstructed the bail process.

He described such claims as legally flawed and unfair.

“It is legally untenable to assert that a bail variation application can frustrate the execution of a bail bond. Once the documents provided meet the bail conditions, which in this case is a GH¢50 million bond. The individual should be released,” he emphasised.

He explained that the purpose of a variation application is not to block or delay a bail bond but to seek an alternative arrangement where necessary.

“It is misleading and legally disingenuous to blame me or any party official for delays caused by unrelated administrative matters. The variation has no bearing on the execution of the bond if the documents are in order,” he added.

Gary Nimako further expressed disappointment in how the situation has been handled, particularly by individuals close to the matter.

“The way Andy has handled this issue is very unfair. I have requested all the relevant documents to ensure the bail process is concluded properly”, he added.

Counsel for Chairman Wontumi, Andy Appiah Kubi has confirmed that despite having met all bail conditions, his client will not be going home yet due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

He is currently being investigated by the Economic and Organised Crime Office for allegations of money laundering, fraud, and financial loss to the state.

When I Get Home and Cannot Cook, My Husband Would Eat Biscuit & Say He Doesn’t Want Heavy Food -Dada Sarah Oluwakemi

    0

Dada Sarah Oluwakemi, a gospel singer, has provided a heartfelt look into her marriage, highlighting the amazing understanding and support she receives from her husband, who is also not only her pianist but also her music producer.

Sarah showed her gratitude for the man who is a supporter of her music and who gives her with stability in an open interview that was aired on the official YouTube channel of WasilaCoded TV.

According to my husband, having a source of income guarantees that you will never be hungry. He says this very frequently. In addition to being my producer, my hubby is also my keyboardist. All of my songs were written by him. He is the one accountable for them. At this very moment, he is the one who is filming my videos. It is his hope that things will be simple and uncomplicated for me. The revelation that she made was that “He does not want me to put myself under stress.”

She added that if she is feeling overwhelmed or nervous, her husband is there to provide comfort by saying soothing words to her: “Whenever I am bothered about something, he would say, ‘Apeke, your life is more important,’ because there are a lot of people out there who need me.”

Sarah provided a description of his personality outside of the workplace by stating, “He is his playmate.” It is true that I am his friend.

When she was asked about his discipline, she gave a good response, mentioning that he deals with problems in a private manner and while maintaining a calm mood.

“He will acknowledge it in public, but once we are back at our house, he will express that what you did in the past has caused him pain.” The explanation that she provided was, “I would have no choice but to apologize.”

Sarah also described the silent sacrifices that her husband makes, saying, “When I return home exhausted and unable to cook, he would eat biscuits and tea and claim he does not want heavy food, but it is a lie; he is starving.” Sarah’s husband is starving. It dawned on me the following morning that he had not eaten dinner, and as a result, I intended to prepare a meal for him before he woke up. As a husband, he is a compassionate person.

She concluded by praising his maturity and understanding, especially in public settings: “Sometimes as a female gospel musician, when we arrive at events, some men will hug me without realizing, but he remains unfazed.” She said this in reference to the period when she was performing in public.

There seems to be conflict about who represents Wontumi – Dr. Asante

    0

A Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has suggested internal disagreements within the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s legal team regarding the detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

Dr. Kojo Asante argues that this conflict over legal representation, which contributed to the prolonged detention of Wontumi by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), needs to be addressed.

Until Friday, his legal team had only been able to secure one surety.

Mr Appiah-Kubi, however, confirmed that despite having met all bail conditions, his client will not be going home yet due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

That other development was a motion filed by NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako, seeking a review of the bail conditions imposed on him by EOCO.

Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, May 31, Dr. Asante noted that conflicting legal strategies from different NPP lawyers appear to have complicated efforts to secure Wontumi’s release.

“From what has happened with Andy Appiah Kubi and what Gary Nimako went to do, it seems like there is a conflict on who exactly is representing Wontumi, and that is what has complicated the matter,” he said.

Dr. Asante explained that while one legal team, led by Andy Appiah Kubi, had attempted to meet bail conditions set by EOCO, another faction within the NPP preferred a more aggressive legal challenge, deeming the detention unjust.

“Appiah Kubi was trying to meet the bail conditions—that was the strategy, as they felt confident they could meet the low condition. He thought that as of yesterday night, that could have been addressed. Then there was other legal representation, more from the party, who thought it was outrageous and wanted to challenge it, but they waited,” he stated.

The CDD-Ghana researcher speculated that this internal conflict within the NPP legal team may have inadvertently delayed Wontumi’s release, prolonging his stay in EOCO custody.

Bryan Acheampong makes many headlines within a week

    0

Accra, May 31, GNA-In a political week filled with dramatic events and responses, one man making headlines effortlessly and forfeiting fanfare for impactful results.

As Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi remained in custody over allegations under EOCO investigation, it was not the visit of high-profile politicians or media caravans that shifted the story, but the quiet, effective intervention of Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

While other political figures arrived at EOCO with cameras and foot soldiers in tow, Mr. Acheampong took a different path.

Without any public spectacle whatsoever, he stepped in and fulfilled the GH₵50 million bail requirement including all necessary documentation for two justified sureties.

By the end of the day, the path to Wontumi’s release was clear, pending only a procedural delay stemming from a new legal application.

The moment has not gone unnoticed. In the swirling landscape of NPP succession politics, the contrast between performance and delivery couldn’t have been clearer.

For many political observers, the incident has become emblematic of Bryan Acheampong’s approach to leadership; defined not by ceremony, but by effectiveness.

While some raced to make appearances, he took quiet ownership of the situation and solved the problem.

This is not the first time Mr. Acheampong has made an impact without drama. Throughout his public career-in parliament, government, business, and philanthropy — he has cultivated a reputation for being steady, strategic, and reliable.

In contrast to the highly stylised moves of some contenders in the NPP flagbearer conversation, his actions last week tell a story of intentional leadership and practical loyalty to his party.

As news of Mr. Acheampong’s role spread, another dimension of the story came into focus: the source of his capacity to act so decisively.

His ability to meet such a steep bail condition without fanfare, fundraising, or political negotiation — has reignited discussion about his strong financial muscle from his well-established businesses.

Bryan Acheampong’s wealth has roots in visible, functioning enterprises.

From the expansive Rock City Hotel project in Kwahu to his earlier ventures in tech and security systems, he has long been one of the few politicians whose business credibility is beyond dispute.

This is the kind of financial independence that, in the context of Ghanaian politics, speaks directly to credibility and integrity. It enables a leader to act, not just advocate — and to lead from a place of stability rather than obligation.

The Wontumi episode may be small in the grand arc of national politics, but it offers a revealing glimpse into what Ghana could expect from Bryan Acheampong as a presidential candidate — and perhaps, one day, as president.

He has shown that he values order over optics.
In times of tension, he prefers resolution over rhetoric. That political loyalty is not something to be advertised, but demonstrated through action.
The difference between standing with someone and standing for them was made clear this week.
Bryan Acheampong didn’t issue a press release. He didn’t pose for the cameras. He didn’t simply show up- he delivered.

This brand of leadership — understated, focused, and purposeful — is beginning to resonate across the party’s grassroots, especially among delegates looking beyond the noise for competence, substance, and reliability.

The Wontumi moment has vindicated legend, showcasing Bryan Acheampong as a serious, steady, well-resourced, loyal, and disciplined leader who may indeed represent a brighter future for the NPP- and Ghana.

‘You’re reaping what you sowed’ – St. Sark jabs Wontumi

    0

General Overseer of Open Arms Ministry, Apostle Nkansah Sarkodie General Overseer of Open Arms Ministry, Apostle Nkansah Sarkodie

The General Overseer of Open Arms Ministry, Apostle Nkansah Sarkodie, popularly known as St. Sarkodie, has attributed Chairman Wontumi’s plight to the actions he took during the NPP’s tenure.

A few days ago, officers from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) attempted to execute a search warrant at Wontumi’s Kumasi residence but were unsuccessful.

Speaking to journalists at his church auditorium on Monday, Apostle Sarkodie described Wontumi’s predicament as “reaping what he sowed.”

He has linked the current situation to the outspoken criticisms Wontumi made against prominent figures from the NDC, including President John Dramani Mahama and Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

Addressing Wontumi’s call for support from the NPP following the failed operation, the controversial cleric labelled it as “childish and immaterial.”

He stated, “I’m very sorry for you, Wontumi. Your cup is full. You’re reaping what you sowed when the NPP was in power. There is no way you will get help and you know personally that the party will not help you.”

Apostle Sarkodie further alleged that Wontumi acted with impunity during his party’s time in government, taking advantage of his position, and warned that it is now time to face the consequences.

He urged supporters defending Wontumi to apologise on his behalf to mitigate any potential punishment, cautioning that if the government proceeds with prosecution, Wontumi’s situation would become “very miserable.”

The cleric also expressed concern that Wontumi’s behavior and attitude might be provoking public anger.

Apostle Sarkodie advised party members and followers to avoid escalating tensions and to instead pray for forgiveness and seek peaceful ways to resolve the challenges faced by Wontumi, which he attributed to the chairman’s “loud mouth and arrogance of power.”

Give up the fight and move on – Franklin Cudjoe tells Suspended CJ

    0

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has advised the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, to abandon her legal fight following the Supreme Court’s dismissal of her injunction application.

Justice Torkornoo had sought to halt the work of a five-member presidential committee investigating petitions for her removal from office. But on Wednesday, May 28, the Supreme Court rejected her interlocutory application, allowing the committee to continue its work.

In the application, the suspended Chief Justice had also asked the court to bar members of the committee—Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazuwaaruah Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dziasah—from participating in the inquiry until the substantive case was determined.

Reacting to the development on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue with Selorm Adonoo on Saturday, May 31, Franklin Cudjoe said it was time for Justice Torkornoo to step aside.

“At this juncture, my honest view is that she should just give up, because the way things are going, there’s no way [she will sail through]. She will be remembered in history that she fought. Maybe that is what she wants,” he opined.

Mr. Cudjoe also criticised Justice Torkornoo’s plea to allow her husband and daughter into the proceedings, suggesting it demonstrated a lack of awareness about the gravity of her situation.

“It’s a bit pity and sad for her to say that her husband and daughter should be allowed in. She should have negotiated with the Committee. If these basic things are denied, you should know that you are persona non grata already; you have overstayed your welcome. As brutal as the process may be, it is the law, the law is the law,” he indicated.

Justice Torkornoo remains suspended while the inquiry proceeds under the authority of a committee established by President John Dramani Mahama.

Suspended CJ’s affidavit facetious and unnecessary – Dafeamekpor

    0

Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, has criticised the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, for filing what he describes as a “facetious” affidavit in her ongoing legal challenge against impeachment proceedings.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, the legislator and lawyer took issue with some of the claims made in the affidavit, particularly the Chief Justice’s concerns about the venue of the hearing—the Castle, a presidential annex—being a high-security zone.

“The problems with the affidavit were that it was rather facetious. Some of the matters were simply not necessary to confront the court with. Like saying the walls around the Castle were too high or it had high security—what does that have to do with the substance of the proceedings?” he asked.

He argued that raising such issues in a constitutional matter of this gravity was inappropriate and amounted to unnecessary fixations.

“You don’t come to court with these matters. These are not legal issues that should be brought before the court in a matter of this nature,” he added.

Mr Dafeamekpor defended the use of the Castle for the proceedings and further cited past disciplinary actions taken by the Chief Justice herself against lower court judges, noting that she had exercised the same Article 146 constitutional provisions she now seeks to challenge.

“She recently disciplined a High Court and Circuit Court judge over misconduct. She referred it to the Judicial Council’s Disciplinary Committee, which made adverse findings, and she fired the judge,” he said. “So why is the process suddenly flawed when it concerns her?”

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was suspended in early May over allegations of abuse of power and professional misconduct. She has filed a legal challenge, including an affidavit questioning the legitimacy of the process and calling for live coverage of the hearings.

However, the Supreme Court has, by unanimous decision, unanimously striked out the suspended CJ’s supplementary affidavit.

Parliament recommends ratification of WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies

    0

This move aims to curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contribute to overcapacity etc This move aims to curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contribute to overcapacity etc

The Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs and the Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism of Parliament have recommended that Ghana ratify the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.

This move, according to the Committee, aims to promote sustainable marine resource management and curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contribute to overcapacity, overfishing, and Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Moving the report of the Committee on the Floor of Parliament for the adoption of the House on Friday, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, Chairman of the Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs, said the Committee considered the Agreement a significant step in global efforts to curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contributed to overcapacity, overfishing, and IUU fishing, promoting sustainable marine resource management.

“Mr Speaker, the ratification would also highlight Ghana’s commitment to global cooperation, aligning with its roles as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and as a founding member of the African Union (AU),” he said.

Dr Jasaw noted that the implications of the ratification include enhancing measures against IUU fishing and other unsustainable fishing practices; improving data collection and reporting on fisheries indicators; increasing transparency among WTO members and supporting global efforts to sustainably manage fisheries resources.

The others he noted were the benefits from fair trade practices in both domestic and international markets, contributing to job creation, poverty alleviation, national food security, and good foreign exchange earnings.

Among the challenges and concerns the Committee’s report enumerated are the potential impact on local fishing communities, particularly small-scale and artisanal fishers who relied on government support such as subsidies on premix fuel, outboard motors, and fishing gear.

“There is a need for careful consideration of domestic implications and mitigating measures to protect vulnerable fishing communities,” the report said.

The Committee recommended that the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture finalise a new Fisheries Bill, which will incorporate the provisions of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.

“The Committee will closely monitor the drafting and passage of the new legislation to ensure it reflects Ghana’s international commitments and socio-economic realities of fishing communities,” the report said.

Some Members of Parliament (MPs) who contributed to the debate on the adoption of the Committee’s report called for sustainable practices with an emphasis on environmentally friendly practices, reduction of plastic waste, and promotion of local materials for fishing gear.

Mr Habib Iddrisu, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Tolon, seconding the Motion, raised concerns about potential effects on fishermen’s livelihoods, with plans to mitigate adverse effects.

Mr Murtala Mohammed, a National Democratic Congress MP for Tamale Central and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, called for investing in infrastructure and equipment to support fishing communities as well as the improvement of working conditions and resources available to officials in these areas.

Emelia Arthur, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, said the WTO agreement prohibited subsidies to vessels engaged in IUU fishing, relevant to Ghana’s current “yellow card” status from the European Union.

She told Parliament that the expected outcomes of the ratification would include improved sustainability, efficiency, transparency, and cooperation among WTO members, potentially boosting Ghana’s fishing industry.

“Mr Speaker, potential outcomes will improve Industry Sustainability that will enhance measures against IUU fishing and unsustainable practices, economic benefits where fair trade practices and sustainable fishing may lead to economic gains and increased Transparency for better data collection and reporting among WTO members,” she said.

The Black Stars thumped Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 at the GTech Community Stadium on May 31, 2025, to finish third in the 2025 Unity Cup.

Skipper Jordan Ayew’s thunderous strike outside the penalty box gave Ghana the lead in the 5th minute.

The team did not relent, continuously pressing, which led to Nations FC defender Razak Simpson netting the second with a nice shot to double the lead in the 11th minute.

Mohammed Fuseini scored the third after Jordan Ayew set him up, ending the first half with a 3-0 scoreline.

In the second half, Lawrence Agyekum turned and twisted the Trinidad defender, and his shot passed through the legs of the goalkeeper to make it 4-0.

The Black Stars created several chances but were unable to convert them.

Goalie Ati-Zigi barely made any major saves as the defense prevented their opponent from penetrating.

Much-talked-about Caleb Yirenkyi starred once again, while Simpson redeemed himself after scoring an own goal in the first match.

Ghana finished in third place, with Nigeria and Jamaica yet to battle for the ultimate trophy.

The game served as a good opportunity for head coach Otto Addo, who tried out most of the young and first-timers, aiming to create competition within the team.

The Black Stars’ next assignment will be the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, to be played in September 2025.

Two wins will be enough for the team to secure qualification for the World Cup.

The arrest and ongoing detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has drawn criticism from a senior academic at the University of Ghana, who described the conduct of state agencies as inhumane.

Speaking in an interview on TV3 on May 31, 2025, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, a policy analyst and senior lecturer at the University’s Political Science Department, expressed concern over what he described as the excessive nature of Wontumi’s arrest and subsequent handling.

“I am not against state agencies prosecuting perceived corrupt persons, but the treatment of Wontumi is inhumane. This is not the reset they want us to believe.”

Chairman Wontumi was arrested on May 27 by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and later handed over to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). On May 28, he was granted bail of GH¢50 million with two justified sureties. However, he remains in custody due to a pending court application challenging the bail conditions.

Fuel shortage forces Takoradi-bound Passion Air flight to return to Accra

    0

A domestic flight operated by Passion Air was forced to return to Accra shortly after takeoff due to what passengers have described as a shocking case of fuel shortage mid-air.

The flight, which departed Kotoka International Airport on Saturday, May 31, around 6:20 a.m. and was en route to Takoradi, reportedly turned back just 15 minutes into the journey.

According to a passenger aboard the aircraft, the crew initially gave no clear explanation for the abrupt turnaround.

However, upon landing, passengers were allegedly informed that the aircraft did not have enough fuel to reach its destination — a revelation that has sparked alarm and concern social media.

“A whole commercial flight with insufficient fuel?” the passenger wrote in disbelief. “We boarded at 6:20am, took off, and barely 15 minutes later they told us we had to return to Accra. No explanation until we landed — then they said there wasn’t enough fuel to get to Takoradi.”

The alleged fuel shortage has raised serious questions about the safety protocols and operational checks followed before takeoff.

As of now, Passion Air has not released an official statement to clarify the cause of the mid-air return or address the fuel shortage claims.

We need broader stakeholder engagement on proposal to increase retirement age

    0

The Director-General of SSNIT, Kwesi Afreh Biney The Director-General of SSNIT, Kwesi Afreh Biney

The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, has emphasised the importance of conducting comprehensive stakeholder consultations regarding proposals to extend the retirement age beyond 60 years, as stipulated in the pension law.

He stated that any potential implementation would require a thorough examination of the benefits and challenges that may arise.

Since 1992, Ghana’s compulsory retirement age has been set at 60 years, although some individuals have suggested increasing it to 65 years.

According to the pensions law, workers are eligible for full pension at 60 years of age (55 years for those working under hazardous conditions) with at least 180 months (15 years) of contributions.

Additionally, an early pension option is available to workers from the age of 55 years with the same contribution requirement.

Commenting on the proposal to increase the retirement age, Mr. Afreh Biney noted that without careful consideration, this could exacerbate the country’s unemployment challenges.

During the commissioning of SSNIT’s 53rd branch in Adenta, he explained that raising the retirement age could prevent younger individuals from entering the workforce, thereby increasing unemployment rates.

He highlighted that countries that have increased their retirement age often have fewer contributors to their schemes or lower population growth rates.

“If Ghana chooses to adopt this proposal, it must also examine its employment and unemployment rates, as a high unemployment rate combined with an increased retirement age would pose significant challenges. While increasing the retirement age might ensure the stability of the fund, expanding operations to include more contributors would also contribute to the fund’s stability,” he said.

Mr. Biney concluded that a thorough dialogue is necessary to determine the potential benefits of increasing the retirement age.

Mahama pledges Cashew Development Board and processing factory in Bono Region

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish a Cashew Development Board and a cashew processing factory in the Bono Region, aiming to revitalize Ghana’s cashew industry and boost the local economy.

Speaking during his “Thank You Tour” in Sunyani on Friday, May 30, 2025, the President emphasized the importance of cashew to the region, stating, “Cashew is not just a crop; it is a livelihood for many of our people. It puts food on the table, sends children to school, and drives our rural economy.”

The proposed Cashew Development Board will oversee pricing, regulation, market access, processing, and research within the industry.

Mahama highlighted that the cashew sector has long lacked a structured policy framework, and the board aims to provide the necessary support to farmers and stakeholders.

“Our government will still go ahead to establish the long-awaited Cashew Development Board. This board will oversee pricing, regulation, market access, processing and research in order to give our farmers the brick that they deserve,” he said.

In addition to the board, President Mahama announced a partnership with the private sector to build a cashew processing factory in the Bono Region.

“By processing our cashew locally, we can create jobs and add value and keep more of the wealth within our region,” he said.

These initiatives are part of a broader agenda to industrialize agriculture and strengthen local economies across Ghana.

The announcement has been welcomed by farmers and industry stakeholders, who see it as a significant step toward enhancing the cashew sector’s potential and improving livelihoods in the region.

Nigeria floods death toll crosses 150 as thousands displaced

A search and rescue mission in flooded area following a downpour in Mokwa, Nigeria A search and rescue mission in flooded area following a downpour in Mokwa, Nigeria

More than 150 people have been killed and thousands displaced after floods devastated parts of central Nigeria, local authorities said, as rescue teams continue to recover bodies and search for the missing.

The flooding struck the rural town of Mokwa in Niger State following torrential rains that began late on Wednesday and continued into Thursday.

The death toll has risen to 151 after more bodies were recovered nearly 10km (6 miles) from Mokwa, said Ibrahim Audu Husseini, a spokesman for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) on Saturday.

At least 3,018 people have been displaced, while 265 houses were “completely destroyed” in the floods, he said, adding that many victims were believed to have been swept down the Niger River, warning that the toll could still rise.

President Bola Tinubu extended his condolences overnight and said search-and-rescue operations were ongoing with the support of Nigeria’s security forces.

“Relief materials and temporary shelter assistance are being deployed without delay,” he wrote in a post on social media.

“We lost everything, the families. We don’t have anywhere else to go, the property has gone,” Mohammed Tanko, a local, told Al Jazeera. “We lost at least 15 from this house.”

Another survivor said: “I escaped with only my nightdress. Right now, I can’t even identify where our home used to be.”

    More rains feared

Meteorologists warn that more rain is expected in the coming days, raising fears of further flooding across the region.

Flooding is a regular threat during Nigeria’s six-month rainy season, but experts say the frequency and severity of these disasters are increasing due to climate change, unregulated construction, and poor drainage infrastructure.

“Flooding has become an annual event, between the months of April and October,” Ugonna Nkwunonwo, a flood risk analyst at the University of Nigeria, told Al Jazeera.

He warned that while flood risks have long been identified, “there has not been much political power to implement this change”.

“This flooding is a result of climate change, which is affecting the frequency and intensity of rainfall,” he said. “The amount of rain you expect in a year could probably come in one or two months, and people are not prepared for that kind of rainfall.”

Last year, more than 1,200 people died and up to two million were displaced by similar disasters across Nigeria.

“This tragic incident serves as a timely reminder of the dangers associated with building on waterways and the critical importance of keeping drainage channels and river paths clear,” the National Emergency Management Agency said in a statement.

UHAS graduates 2,483 healthcare champions, urges them to transform Ghana and beyond

With hearts full of pride and eyes set on the future, 2,483 graduates of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) took their final walk across the ceremonial stage, not just as students, but as newly minted warriors of health, poised to heal, serve, and transform a world that desperately needs them.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lydia Aziato, challenged the graduating class to become torchbearers of innovation, compassion, and collaboration in a healthcare landscape she described as “dynamic, demanding, and in dire need of leaders.”

“Ghana—and the world at large—needs you now more than ever,” Prof. Aziato declared. “Let your light shine. Be hardworking. Be visionary. Be bold. And above all, never stop learning.”

From nurses and doctors to public health professionals, pharmacists, and biomedical scientists, the graduates came from seven distinct schools, each representing a vital pillar of Ghana’s healthcare system:

Fred N. Binka School of Public Health – 939

School of Nursing and Midwifery – 813

School of Allied Health Sciences – 339

    School of Medicine – 121

School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences – 95

    School of Pharmacy – 39

School of Sports and Exercise Medical Sciences – 13

This year’s graduating class includes 2,359 undergraduate and 124 postgraduate students, many of whom have already begun making their mark in hospitals, rural clinics, and research centres across the country.

One such graduate is Dr. Edward Kwame Agyekum, a surgeon at the Ho Teaching Hospital, who also earned a Master of Public Health (General).

His story drew admiration as he shared how he juggled demanding surgeries by day with late-night lectures and research.

“It wasn’t easy, but I knew this additional knowledge would help me impact not just individual patients, but entire communities,” Dr. Agyekum said.

Another standout was Setordzi Antoinette, who graduated with a Bachelor of Midwifery. Her radiant smile told a story of determination and sacrifice. “This is a victory for every girl from a small town who dares to dream big,” she said with tears of joy.

Prof. Aziato emphasized that lifelong learning and teamwork are not optional but essential for success in health and allied sciences.

“Collaboration drives excellence,” she said. “Work seamlessly with colleagues across disciplines. The best outcomes in healthcare come not from individual heroes, but from united teams.”

The ceremony was a powerful reminder of UHAS’s growing role in shaping the future of health care in Ghana and beyond. As the graduates tossed their caps into the air, the message was clear: they are ready—to serve, to lead, and to make a difference.

And as the sun set over the university’s main campus in Ho, a new dawn broke for the 2,483 graduates—each carrying not just a certificate, but a mission to heal, uplift, and lead with knowledge, skill, and heart.
