‘You must be proud when you get a chance to enter the Law School’

Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie is the Acting Chief Justice Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie is the Acting Chief Justice

The Acting Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has cautioned aspiring law students that entry into the country’s law schools will not be granted indiscriminately, according to a report by Graphic Online.

He emphasised that the General Legal Council (GLC) remains committed to maintaining high standards in legal education and will not open the doors of the profession to just anyone.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie stated that those who gain admission should view it as a privilege and take pride in the opportunity. While expanding access to legal education is important, he stressed that it must be balanced against the imperative to uphold quality and integrity in the profession.

He warned that unregulated and unlimited admissions could erode academic standards and ultimately weaken the legal profession in the long term.

To safeguard the future of legal education in Ghana, the Acting Chief Justice noted that the GLC is collaborating with key institutions such as the Office of the Attorney General to uphold rigorous standards in legal training.

“I want to repeat this; we are not going to open the gates just to let anybody at all in. You must be proud when you get a chance to enter the Law School. You should be able to tell yourself that you got here through hard work and merit,” Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said.

He made these remarks on Monday during the inauguration of a moot court at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Law School.

He noted that while their conversation was filled with profound and emotional reflections, he could not disclose much of it due to privacy concerns.

“To be honest, there is little I can say about this because during this period, a lot of things cannot come out. Privacy is very important. He shared some very deep and important things with me,” Kaywa said.

“I am a spiritual person, so I understood what he was saying during our conversation. I may not be able to disclose the details now, but he spoke like someone who knew what was about to happen.”

CEO of defunct Beige Bank Michael Nyineku acquitted by Court of Appeal

0

The founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the defunct Beige Bank, Michael Nyinaku, has been acquitted after a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal unanimously upheld his appeal against an order to open his Defence against the charges.

This was after the panel held that after the prosecution had closed its case it failed to adduce evidence sufficient enough to warrant a need for the accused to open his defence against the charges levelled against him at the High Court.

The view of the appeal court as summarised was that based on the evidence before the court, all the acts of impropriety levelled against the accused were acts performed in his capacity as the Chief Executive Officer of the then institution.

These acts were not executed by him alone but with the participation of numerous other officials of the Bank.

It holds the view that, these acts had been copiously documented in the bank’s records evidencing the non-existentence of any intentions to hide them.

It was the case of the court that, there was no evidence before the trial court to confirm that any of these acts were in violation of any of the bank’s policies or other related policies.

There was also no evidence to establish any fact that these acts were not beneficial to the bank.

Following the closure of Prosecutions case in 2023 after parading six witnesses, the trial judge, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, ordered him to open his defence to the 43 (counts) charges.

The Court made the order after holding the view that prosecution through its witnesses was able to establish prima facie evidence for which reason, Nyineku should open his defense.

Dissatisfied with the decision of Justice Asare-Botwe, a Justice of the Court of Appeal who was presiding as an additional High Court judge, on submission of no case to answer, Nyineku through his lawyers led by Thaddeus Sory filed an appeal against the order.

Despite the pendency of the appeal against the ruling, the trial proceeded with the accused person having as at date already called 29 out of a scheduled list of 41 Witnesses set to testify on his behalf.

However, on Thursday, July 24, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal presided over by Justice Emmanuel Ankamah, upheld his submission against the order to open his defense.

The panel which also includes Justice Dr Ernest Owusu-Dapaa and Justice Kofi Akrowiah acquitted him on all the charges.

Nyinaku, who doubled as the Chief Executive Officer of the defunct bank, was accused of siphoning customers funds and was charged for stealing GH¢2.1 billion of depositors’ money from the bank.

He pleaded not guilty to all the 43 charges which included stealing, fraudulent breach of trust and money laundering and has been granted bail while facing trial.

State Prosecutors paraded six witnesses in court to testify in the case.

Nyinaku, was initially granted bail in the sum of GH¢200 million. This amount was later varied by the Court of Appeal on the grounds that the said amount was onerous.

Per the brief facts of the case narrated by Alfred Tuah-Yeboah then the Deputy Attorney General, Nyinaku was the former Chief Executive Officer of the Beige Bank and that on August 1, 2018, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) revoked the banking license of Beige Bank and placed it in receivership.

He said a review of the financial and other records of the Bank conducted by the receiver and his team showed several suspicious and unusual transactions, which were subsequently reported to the law enforcement agencies for investigations.

The AG said investigations conducted revealed that between 2015 and 2018, the accused person as CEO of the Bank had allegedly used various means to transfer huge sums of monies to companies related to him and for his personal benefits.

He alleged that the funds transferred were depositors’ funds lodged with the Beige Bank and that between 2017 and 2018, Nyinaku had caused the transfer of GH¢10,071.00 fixed deposit account held with Beige Bank in which various customers placed a total of GH¢448,636,210.21 to Beige Capital Asset Management Limited, (BCAM), without the knowledge and consent of the customers.

The AG said BCAM was a limited liability company wholly owned by the Beige Group Limited (Beige Group), an entity which in turn was wholly owned by the accused person, adding that the accused person between 2017 and 2018 caused the transfer of 35 fixed deposit investments of 23 customers of Beige Bank valued GH¢141,042,348.92 to the Beige Group, a Company wholly owned by the accused person and its majority shareholders of Beige Bank.

The prosecution said further investigations revealed that in March 2018, the accused person had caused a “fictitious” second account to be opened in the name of First African Savings and Loans (FASL), an existing account holder with Beige Bank, without the knowledge of the board and management of FASL.

The AG said the accused person then caused the transfer of the sum of GH¢320 million from the accounts of various Beige Bank customers into the bank accounts of BCAM held with Beige Bank.

The GH¢320 million was subsequently transferred from the BCAM account held with the Beige Bank into the “fictitious” FASL account that had been opened in Beige Bank’s books on the instructions of the accused person allegedly, said the prosecution.

It said between March 2018 and August 2018, GH¢21,123,270.96 out of the GH¢320 million was transferred from the “fictitious” FASL bank account to some two individuals and ten companies, nine of which were related to Nyinaku, on his instructions.

The AG said again, between 2015 and 2017, the accused person, through the use of payment vouchers and other internally generated documentation, had caused the sum of GH¢1,465,000.00 of depositors’ funds lodged with Beige Bank to be paid to himself and other persons, the Court heard.

It said these transactions were recorded in a general ledger account of the bank described as Directors’ account. It added that it came out that the accused person through the use of payment vouchers, emails and memos, had caused a total of GH¢20,599,052.58 of depositors’ funds lodged with Beige Bank to be transferred to a number of a general ledger accounts of the bank described as shareholders’ account.

The AG also said, between 2016 and 2017, the accused, through the use of payment vouchers, had caused a total amount of GH¢141,742,087.70 of depositors’ funds lodged with Beige Bank to be transferred to a number of companies and individuals for his benefits allegedly, it said.

It said the transactions were recorded in the general ledger accounts of the Bank described as Prepayment- Project Works Account, and that between 2017 and 2018, the accused person using payment vouchers, e-mails, and memo’s had further caused the sum of GH¢118,076,813.09 of depositors’ funds lodged with Beige Bank to be transferred to several companies and individuals for his benefit allegedly.

It said the transactions were also recorded in a general ledger account of the bank described as Beige Group Account.

The AG again said investigations had established that the money the accused allegedly dishonestly appropriated from the Beige Bank remained unpaid as of August 1, 2018, when the Bank’s license was revoked by BoG.

Kwabena Duffour, seven others: AG explains decision to enter nolle prosequi

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, July 28, GNA – Dr Dominic Akurutinga Ayine, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, has explained his decision to enter a nolle prosequi in the case of Republic versus Kwabena Duffour and Seven Others.

This decision, the Attorney-General, said effectively brought an end to the criminal trial of Dr Kwabena Duffour, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana and former Minister for Finance.

Speaking at a Government Accountability Series press conference at the Presidency in Accra, Dr Ayine said he took that decision after a prolonged period of negotiations with his team of State Attorneys, including the Director of Public Prosecution and the Receiver of Unibank on one side.

While the team on the other side was made up of Dr Duffour, the shareholders, director and managers of UniBank Ghana Limited (in Receivership) (UNIBANK).

Dr Ayine said in March this year, the lawyers for the Unibank Directors and shareholders approached him with a proposal of their clients’ intention to settle their indebtedness to UNIBANK.

He said in response, he convened a meeting on 25th March 2025, with them, their legal representatives, and the Receiver of UNIBANK, Mr. Nii Amanor Dodoo.

He noted that at the meeting, it became obvious to both parties that a reconciliation of UNIBANK’s accounts with the Bank of Ghana be done.

He said, therefore, he authorized the Receiver to engage in a reconciliation exercise with them to determine the full scope of UNIBANK’s exposure.

The Attorney-General said he directed that the parties adopt a wholistic approach that combined liabilities under both the criminal proceedings and the ongoing civil cases to reach a unified resolution that would bring closure to all related matters.

He explained that the objective was to assess the feasibility of a comprehensive settlement.

He said the charges in the criminal case against the Accused Persons involved a total amount of GH¢1.2 billion, while the civil case involved a total exposure of GH¢ 5.7 billion.

Dr Ayine said it was important to state for the avoidance of doubt that the total exposure in the criminal case is a part of the total civil case exposure; declaring that in other words, the GH¢1.2 billion was not on top of GH¢ 5.7 billion.

He said the GH¢ 5.7 billion was made up of: GH¢2 billion being loans and advances which UNIBANK made to related and connected parties and GH¢3.7 billion being payments made on behalf of or on the instructions of the Accused Persons.

He said included in the two amounts above, however, was an amount of GH¢2.1 billion which were alleged to be fictitious loans and fictitious transactions booked by UNIBANK prior to its placement in official administration.

He said during the reconciliation exercise, the Accused Persons objected to the inclusion of this GH¢2.1 billion on grounds that the amount did not involve any direct cash outflows which could be recovered.

Dr Ayine said the Accused Persons also objected to the inclusion of placements of GH¢0.3 billion made to Unisecurities.

He said Unisecurities, however, was a SEC-regulated (not BoG-regulated) related company that had been placed in liquidation, and for which a claim had been filed with the Official Liquidator.

He said the recovery of this amount was being pursued independently through insolvency proceedings with the Official Liquidator of that entity.

Dr Ayine said, in summary, the above matters led to the revision of the previously reported exposure of GH¢ 5.7 billion down to GH¢ 3.3 billion, which comprised the following adjustments: “The exclusion of GH¢ 2.1 billion in an alleged fictitious amounts booked to the account of the shareholder, which did not involve cash outflows.

“And the exclusion of GH¢ 0.3 billion relating to uniBank’s placement with the SEC-regulated related company currently in receivership, which is being pursued separately through the insolvency process.”

He said after prolonged negotiations, the Accused Persons, by a letter dated 7th May 2025, made a proposal to settle the revised outstanding obligation of GH¢ 3.3 billion through a structured approach.

The Attorney-General said the Accused Persons offered to pay GH¢ 2 billion in full and final settlement of the outstanding obligation, through the following arrangements: “GH¢ 800 million worth of assets to be transferred directly to UNIBANK.

“And their active cooperation and participation to assist the Receiver to recover an additional GH¢ 1.2 billion from the direct beneficiaries, paid out on their instructions.”

He said out of the above arrangements, the Accused Persons had provided landed properties valued at GH¢ 824 million to UNIBANK.

He said further, the Accused Persons would also be responsible for any shortfall in the proceeds realised from the sale of the landed properties.

Dr Ayine said a total of GH¢ 0.5 billion had, to date, been recovered out of the GH¢ 1.2 billion being pursued from the direct beneficiaries.

He said recovery of the remaining balance of GH¢ 0.7 billion out of the GH¢ 1.2 billion, and realization of the landed properties provided were expected to be completed over a timeline of 18 months.

“Although the preference would have been for the Accused Persons to settle the proposed amount in cash, immediate settlement in cash was not, from my sense of what transpired at the negotiations, a realistic option,” he said.

Dr Ayine said in assessing the proposal submitted by the lawyers for the Accused Persons, he took into account certain factors, such as the Receiver of UNIBANK acknowledged that the fictitious amounts totaling GH¢ 2.1 billion did not result from cash outflows but related to accounting entries that overstated the asset base of the Bank, which predated uniBank’s placement in Official Administration.

A claim for the placement of GH¢ 0.3 billion with the SEC-regulated related entity was filed by the Receiver with the Official Liquidator in 2019 and its recovery is being pursued separately through that insolvency process.

He also cited that both the criminal and civil cases had persisted for over six years with no immediate resolution in sight.

He said the complex nature of the legal proceedings had significantly delayed any meaningful recovery, among others.

Dr Ayine said from the foregoing that he took a pragmatic, wholistic approach by engaging both the Receiver and the Accused Persons to broker a resolution that settles both the criminal and civil dimensions of the matter.

“This strategy recognizes that while criminal proceedings are punitive, the real economic value to the State lies in a non-conviction-based asset recovery approach,” he said.

He said the terms of the settlement were structured to ensure that the Attorney-General, the Bank of Ghana, and the Ministry of Finance exercise oversight over the recovery of the negotiated amount.

He said progress under the agreement would be subject to quarterly reviews to ensure that the Accused Persons fulfill their obligations as agreed.

Touching on distortion of the fact on social media, the Attorney-General said Dr Kwabena Duffour and the other persons standing trial were not charged with stealing or looting public funds.

He said they were charged with causing financial loss to the state, fraudulent breach of trust, falsification of accounts, dishonestly receiving and money laundering.

He said, however, that the facts and the evidence supporting these charges never alleged that those standing trial personally benefited from the banking transactions that gave rise to the charges.

Dr Ayine said secondly, the analogy assumes that these charges could be proven beyond reasonable doubt; stating that on the contrary, the record shows that the charges were contestable and there was a high likelihood that the defence could have raised sufficient doubt to procure an acquittal.

“And if that happened, as seen from the Beige Capital Case, I would not have been able to recover even GH¢1,” he stated.

In the BEIGE Case, Dr Ayine said the BEIGE Capital offered State GHS10 million settlement, which he rejected, and continued with the case, however, they were acquitted and discharged by the Court of Appeal.

He said: “They offered 10 million Ghana cedis in settlement, and I refused. Today, I can’t get 50 pesewas from BEIGE Capital. So, the dynamics are complex.”

Heath Goldfields Ltd, the current leaseholder and operator of the Bogoso-Prestea Gold Mine, has paid GH¢80 million to settle outstanding salaries owed to employees from the previous leaseholder’s tenure.

This payment, made in fulfillment of the conditions for granting the lease to Heath Goldfields by the Government of Ghana, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to restore operations at the mine and reaffirm the company’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its workforce.

The outstanding liabilities, which predated Heath Goldfields’ acquisition of the Bogoso-Prestea mining lease, had remained unresolved following the previous leaseholder’s termination.

As part of a broader intervention to reposition the mine, Heath Goldfields assumed responsibility for resolving these legacy issues, creating a foundation of trust, social stability, and operational readiness.

According to Patrick Appiah Mensah, Managing Director of Heath GoldFields Ltd, “Our commitment to our people is at the heart of our values.” He further noted that “While these obligations stem from the previous leaseholder’s operations, we undertook to settle them in full following the successful award of the mining lease to Heath Goldfields.”

The payment of GH¢80 million covers outstanding salaries, leave entitlements, and other related employee obligations accrued under the previous leaseholder. Heath Goldfields has also initiated a stakeholder engagement and reconciliation process aimed at settling the remaining outstanding entitlements, including provident fund contributions, severance packages, and end-of-service benefits, which were left unpaid after the former leaseholder terminated the employees’ contracts.

The action underscores Heath Goldfields’ brand positioning as a credible, values-driven partner in Ghana’s mining sector, one that is deeply committed to transparent stakeholder engagement, ethical leadership, and long-term community empowerment.

As the company continues its phased reopening of the Bogoso Prestea Mine, this payment represents a critical step in fostering labour harmony, restoring investor confidence, and delivering shared value to the people of Ghana.

Outrage on social media as Royal Family ‘leaves’ Michelle Agyemang out of England team photo

The Royal Family posted a photo of the England team without Michelle Agyemang The Royal Family posted a photo of the England team without Michelle Agyemang

The Royal Family of England is facing backlash after posting a congratulatory message to the Lionesses, which excludes breakout star, Michelle Agyemang, from the accompanying photos.

The 19-year-old forward, who is of Ghanaian descent, scored decisive late goals in both the quarter-final against Sweden and the semi-final versus Italy, earning widespread praises for rescuing England in crucial moments.

Yet, she was nowhere to be seen in the carousel of images posted across the Royal Family’s social media pages ahead of the Euro final on Sunday, July 27, 2025.

The post featured action shots of several players, including Jess Carter, who had previously left social media due to racist abuse, and a team photo from an earlier match.

But the omission of Agyemang, one of the tournament’s standout performers, sparked anger among fans who accused the Royal Family of overlooking a key Black player.

“She’s literally the reason England are in the final,” one user wrote. “This doesn’t feel like an innocent oversight.”

When asked about the issue at a press conference, England manager, Sarina Wiegman, downplayed any intent to exclude.

“That would never, ever be intentional. We really appreciate the Royal Family’s support. It’s unfortunate that Michelle is not in the picture, but there are good intentions,” she said.

Still, the damage was done online, where supporters questioned how such a glaring omission could happen in 2025, especially after past calls for better representation and sensitivity in public posts.

The Royal Family has not yet commented on the criticism.

Nigeria kidnappers kill 35 hostages even after ransom paid

Kidnappers in Nigeria have killed at least 35 people they abducted Kidnappers in Nigeria have killed at least 35 people they abducted

Kidnappers in Nigeria have killed at least 35 people they abducted from a village in northern Zamfara state despite ransoms being paid for their release, a local official told the BBC.

In recent years, criminal gangs in the region, known in the country as bandits, have taken to kidnapping people as a means to raise money.

In this incident, 56 people were taken from Banga village, Kauran Namoda local government area in March. The gunmen then demanded a ransom of one million naira ($655; £485) per captive, media in Nigeria report.

Local government chairman Manniru Haidara Kaura said that most of those killed were young people who “were slaughtered like rams”.

“What happened was that the bandits demanded ransom money, and after some back-and-forth, they were given what they asked for. They then released 18 people, including 17 women and one young boy, on Saturday,” Haidara added.

“Only they [the gunmen] know why they killed them. They are senseless and heartless people. They forget that they are killing their own brothers, and we will all meet before Allah.”

Sixteen of those released on Saturday are in the hospital receiving treatment, while the bodies of the 38 killed by the bandits are unlikely to be returned as in these cases, corpses are rarely released.

In an attempt to curb the spiralling and lucrative kidnapping industry, a law was enacted in 2022 making it a crime to make ransom payments. It carries a jail sentence of at least 15 years; however, no one has ever been arrested on those charges.

It also made abduction punishable by death in cases where the victims die.

But families often feel forced to pay to save their loved ones, citing the government’s inability to ensure their safety.

Daddy Lumba was an institution, not just a musician – Manager pays tribute [Video]

“It’s no doubt he can be called the greatest of all time Ghanaian musician. He was loved by everyone—even politicians from both the NDC and NPP. He once brought together former Presidents Rawlings and Kufuor under one roof. That’s how powerful his music and presence were,” Roman said.

He added that watching Daddy Lumba in his element was a “beautiful experience,” stressing that his legacy will remain unmatched.

Daddy Lumba passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra. He was 60.

GMA Slams Unsafe Lake Practices

A picture of the canoe with passengers not wearing safety jackets

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has expressed concern over safety on the Volta Lake.

This followed “a widely circulated video on social media depicting a dangerously overcrowded boat transporting dozens of passengers on the Volta Lake – none of whom were wearing life jackets.”

This blatant disregard for safety protocols, the GMA stated in a press release, “persists despite continuous public education campaigns by the Authority, which emphasise the mandatory use of life jackets and strict adherence to load limits,” adding that “this incident is a disturbing reminder of the tragic boat disaster at Dikpe in the Lawra Municipality in the Upper West Region, which recently claimed the lives of seven students. The GMA has since distributed life jackets in affected communities including Dikpe, Brifo, Brifo Chaa, Bagir, and Gombile as part of its support and prevention efforts.”

The GMA, the release went on, “remains steadfast in its commitment to improving safety across Ghana’s inland waterway, which serves as vital lifelines for thousands of Ghanaians.”

Some of the interventions the Authority pointed out include the removal of over 20,000 dangerous tree stumps on the Volta Lake and elsewhere to reduce collision risks. Areas covered include Dambai-Njare, Yeji-Makango, Yeji-Awujakope, Tunpunjah Island-Kudorkpoe, Kudorkope-Dambai, and Bridge-Ano-Ntoaboma. The removal, the Authority stated, “has drastically reduced potential fatalities on these water bodies.”

Comprehensive outreach activities, including safety education, loadline marking (to prevent overloading), and life jacket distribution in communities such as Bui, Buipe, Bongase, Kwamikrom, Deifuor, Mepe, and Battor have also been undertaken by the Authority’s technical teams.

Similar exercises were completed last year in Elubo, Nzulezu, Ekye Amanfrom, Adawso, Kotosu, Tepa, Yeji, Aveme, Kete-Krachi, Dzemini, and Akateng, the release added.

The Director-General of GMA, Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali, has also led safety advocacy visits to key inland water locations, including Akosombo, Dambai, Kete Krachi, Yeji, and Tamale.

The Authority is deploying its vessel, MV Nene Azumah Matey Korley to Kpando-Torkor to bolster search and rescue capabilities on the Volta Lake and surrounding areas. This complements existing GMA/Navy enforcement teams stationed at Dambai and Yeji.

Certified life jackets must be worn before embarking on boats, the GMA has warned, adding that “passengers must demand life jackets and refuse to board overloaded boats.”

“It is troubling to see such flagrant disregard for life after our extensive investments and campaigns,” Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali stated and added, “Safety on our waterways is non-negotiable.”

New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Charles Owusu Juanah, has decried what he characterises as a calculated campaign of misinformation, distortion, and partisan mischief aimed at undermining the construction of the National Cathedral — a project envisioned as a spiritual monument for the nation.

The legal practitioner has categorically dismissed all allegations of impropriety leveled against the National Cathedral Board of Trustees.

Addressing the media at the Ghana International Press Centre as a Christian and a concerned citizen of Ghana, on the theme, “Reaffirming the Integrity of the National Cathedral Project and its Committee Members,” Charles Owusu Juanah, asserted that despite being exempt from certain statutory obligations, the Board and Secretariat have voluntarily adhered to the highest standards of transparency and accountability in fulfillment of their sacred duty to the nation.

Outlining the measures undertaken by the Board to ensure transparency in the execution of its responsibilities, he asserted that, in addition to engaging the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) in its contractor selection process, the Board also sought a formal legal opinion from the Attorney General regarding donations from the Ministry of Finance.

He further noted that the Board submitted all pertinent documentation to Parliament in December 2022, expressing full openness to external audits or a commission of inquiry.

“These actions exemplify that the Board has not only operated within the confines of the law but has transcended legal obligations to uphold public trust,” he emphasised.

Moreover, he stated, “The legitimacy and autonomy of the National Cathedral Board of Trustees and its Secretariat are unimpeachable; grounded in law, guided by faith, and committed to national unity and spiritual renewal.”

He refuted claims that appointees of the Board were politically appointed, contending that its membership comprises esteemed Christian leaders from various denominations.

“They were not politically appointed, but invited based on moral authority, ecclesiastical leadership, and commitment to national unity,” asserted Lawyer Juanah.

To underscore its commitment to transparency, he revealed that the National Cathedral Board of Trustees engaged reputable audit firms, such as Deloitte & Touche, to conduct audits of its operations and voluntarily submitted documents to Parliament for scrutiny, adding that there is no legal basis warranting the dissolution of the Board.

“All GH¢225,962,500 received from the government has been accounted for and disbursed under valid contracts to Adjaye Associates, RIBADE (the main contractor), and the Nehemiah Group,” he noted.

Challenging any attempts by the executive to dissolve the Board, he cautioned: “There exists no legal foundation for any government official or President to unilaterally dissolve the Board of the National Cathedral. Any such endeavor constitutes executive overreach and threatens the constitutional principle of administrative integrity.”

He recounted former President Akufo-Addo’s provision of seed funding for the project and his establishment of an independent Board of Trustees to oversee its execution, a structure he noted was legally established under the Companies Act as a company limited by guarantee.

He also dismissed claims regarding a GH¢4.9 million discrepancy, asserting that it stemmed from an administrative reconciliation gap rather than any fraudulent activity.

Addressing the GH¢15.7 million disbursed to Adjaye &Associates prior to the Board’s inauguration, the legal practitioner clarified that the payment was authorized by the Presidency to facilitate the timely mobilization of design work and was lawful.

Other matters he addressed included the successful raising of over $400,000 through a registered not-for-profit entity, as well as elucidating that the GH¢2.6 million loan from JNS Talent Centre was an interest-free advance from a Board member, which has since been repaid in full within 12 days. He also disclosed that although the ADB MoMo platform raised over GH¢50 million, none of that amount had been transferred to the Board of Trustees.

Rallying support for this sacred endeavor, Lawyer Juanah urged Ghanaian Christians and churches worldwide to unite behind the completion of the Cathedral, asserting that silence in the face of political distortion would constitute a betrayal of faith.

“This is not the time to retreat. This is the time to stand, to build, to preserve the honour of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to ensure that future generations will know that when the moment came, the Church in Ghana did not falter.”

According to him, the project’s governance remains legally autonomous, transparent, and accountable, adding that the architectural and museum designs are fully complete, a contractor has been appointed, land preparation is underway, and approximately eight percent of the construction has already been executed.

‘We eat our own’ – MzGee slams media hypocrisy over Big Akwes interview fallout

0

MzGee is a popular media personality MzGee is a popular media personality

Popular media personality MzGee has expressed concerns about the treatment meted out to the TV presenter who found herself caught in the fallout after controversial actor Big Akwes made some comments about singer Cina Soul on live TV.

It may be recalled that in the viral interview in June, Big Akwes was asked to play a game of “Kiss-Marry-Kill” and was prompted to choose between actress Vivian Jill and singer Cina Soul.

He then gave a chilling description of how he would “kill” Cina Soul, detailing spiritual summoning, multiple stab wounds, and drinking her blood, which left viewers horrified.

Cina Soul herself responded swiftly, tagging the Ghana Police and calling for immediate action, expressing that she felt threatened.

However, MzGee’s concern on her Gee O’Clock show was not just about the disturbing remarks from Big Akwes but also about how the media fraternity turned on the young lady who conducted the interview.

According to MzGee, the presenter, who is presumably early in her career, has been unfairly vilified for asking a question that has become commonplace in entertainment interviews.

“We eat our own. I’ve not seen any sector in showbiz in Ghana where lions bite lions like the media space. Just because someone works from a different house or platform, we turn on them as if they’re enemies,” MzGee lamented.

She described the backlash as cruel and hypocritical, highlighting how media personalities, who themselves chase ratings and viral moments, had mocked and insulted the young presenter instead of offering support or guidance.

“This young girl is just starting off. How do you expect her to wake up the next morning and show up on TV after being dragged this way? We should be correcting, not condemning. We should shield our own like other industries do. Look at how musicians defend each other—even when they’re wrong,” she questioned.

MzGee, drawing from her own experience, recounted times when she had faced similar attacks, especially after interviews that sparked debate.

She recalled the backlash from a now-infamous question she posed to Wendy Shay, “Who are you?” which led to widespread criticism even though, as she explained, it was part of a logical sequence of questions based on Shay’s earlier answers.

“I’ve had people call me and insult me. But I’ve also had people, seasoned broadcasters like Deloris Frimpong Manso (Delay) and Anita Erskine, reach out, correct me, uplift me. That’s what we should do,” she added.

MzGee passionately argued that the young presenter should not be held responsible for the reprehensible answer Big Akwes gave, especially after she made it clear that the segment was intended for entertainment.

“She didn’t know he’d respond that way. She even clarified that the game was just for fun. Are we now holding presenters accountable for the irresponsible comments of their guests?” she said.

She pointed out the double standards in how some media figures are defended when under fire, depending on their popularity or affiliations.

“Let your favorite presenter ask the same question and get the same answer, watch how you’ll defend them. We are biased. We support based on favorites, not principles,” she said.

MzGee ended her monologue with a strong call to the media industry to stand in solidarity with each other rather than tear each other down for clout.

“It’s okay to critique, but why the insults? Why the dragging? Why are we making her a scapegoat? If the fight is in your house, and you fight yourselves, who will come to your aid when outsiders attack?” she warned.

She revealed that she had reached out privately to the young presenter to offer encouragement and guidance, something she hopes more people in the industry will do going forward.

“I told her, ‘The best of us go through these things. Dust yourself off and keep going. You didn’t come into this space with their permission, and you don’t need it to thrive,’” she said.

8 individuals seek plea bargains in NSA scandal

Dr Dominic Ayine is the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Dr Dominic Ayine is the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that eight individuals, including three former officers of the National Service Authority (NSA), have approached his office to negotiate plea bargains in connection with the ongoing financial scandal at the National Service Scheme (NSS).

Addressing the media during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 28, 2025, Dr Ayine revealed that the filing of formal charges has been temporarily suspended following the emergence of new evidence suggesting financial irregularities involving a Bank of Ghana account linked to former NSA Director-General, Osei Assibey.

According to the Attorney General, investigators discovered that GH¢189 million had been transferred into the account, of which GH¢80 million remains unaccounted for.

Additionally, two cheques bearing Assibey’s name and account details were allegedly used to withdraw nearly GH¢2 million.

“The National Service Authority scandal case was due to be filed last week. However, we stumbled upon evidence of malfeasance involving an account at the Bank of Ghana. Out of the GH¢189 million transferred, GH¢80 million cannot be traced. Two cheques linked to the former Director-General were used to withdraw just under GH¢2 million,” Dr Ayine stated.

He explained that the delay in filing charges is to allow the Attorney-General’s Office to obtain further documentation from the Bank of Ghana, the Ministry of Finance, and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to support the prosecution.

Dr Ayine further disclosed that several of the implicated individuals have expressed willingness to cooperate with investigators. Some have indicated their readiness to testify against their co-accused, while certain vendors and service providers involved in the scheme have offered to serve as prosecution witnesses.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to accountability, the Attorney General assured the public that no individual found culpable will be shielded from prosecution.

‘Beige Capital offered GH¢10 million in settlement and I refused’ – AG discloses

0

Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine is the Attorney General and Minister of Justice Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine is the Attorney General and Minister of Justice

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has disclosed that his office was offered an amount of GH¢10 million by the former founder of the defunct Beige Capital Bank, a settlement offer he outrightly refused.

According to him, his office can no longer retrieve even a meager amount from the case due to the court’s ruling acquitting the former Beige Bank founder, Michael Nyinaku, of all charges.

Dr Ayine disclosed this during the Government Accountability Series held on Monday, July 28, 2025, whiles providing reasons for entering a nolle prosequi in the Unibank case.

He stressed that although the charges were legally contestable, records indicated to him that the defense could have raised sufficient doubts to secure an acquittal, resulting in no benefit to the State, as seen in the Beige Capital case.

“When I did the press release, I did not mention Beige Capital because at that point in time, I did not know that the decision was coming down. Now, as providence would have it, the decision came a day after, right?

“I can now disclose that Beige Capital offered me or my office GH¢10 million. You can ask the lawyers for Beige Capital, ask lawyer Thaddeus Sory. They offered GH¢10 million in settlement and I refused. Today, I can’t get 50 pesewas from Beige Capital, so the dynamics are complex,” he indicated.

Background

The Accra High Court in a landmark ruling, acquitted Michael Nyinaku, of all 43 criminal charges leveled against him, including stealing, money laundering, and fraudulent breach of trust.

The court ruled that Nyinaku had no case to answer, effectively ending a years-long legal battle that placed him at the center of alleged financial misconduct.

Beige Bank, one of several indigenous banks affected by the central bank’s reforms, had its license revoked in August 2018 by the Bank of Ghana over what the regulator described as severe irregularities and non-compliance.

Following the revocation, the institution was placed under receivership, leading to a detailed investigation and subsequent charges by the Office of the Attorney General.

Tinubu rewards Super Falcons with $100K and homes after historic WAFCON triumph

Nigeria lifted their tenth WAFCON trophy after defeating Morocco Nigeria lifted their tenth WAFCON trophy after defeating Morocco

Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lavished generous rewards on the Super Falcons following their sensational comeback victory over hosts Morocco to win the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Each of the 24 players has been awarded the Naira equivalent of $100,000, while members of the 11-man technical team will receive $50,000 apiece.

According to reports, in addition to the cash, the President also gifted each player a fully furnished three-bedroom apartment in recognition of their heroic efforts on the continental stage.

“There is a cash award of the Naira equivalent of $100,000 each to the 24 players and equivalent of $50,000 to the 11-man technical team,” he said.

The announcement comes just two days after the Super Falcons staged one of the greatest comebacks in WAFCON history, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Morocco 3-2 in front of a capacity crowd at Rabat’s Stade Olympique.

The dramatic victory, sealed by substitute Jennifer Echegini’s 88th-minute strike, marked Nigeria’s record-extending 10th WAFCON title, reaffirming their dominance as Africa’s most successful women’s national team.

In a pulsating final on Saturday, July 26, 2025, Morocco stormed to a 2-0 lead within the first 30 minutes.

Captain Ghizlane Chebbak broke the deadlock in the 12th minute with a powerful strike from the edge of the area, and Sanaa Mssoudy added a second twelve minutes later after a controversial collision went unpunished by the referee.

But Nigeria refused to fold. Esther Okoronkwo led the charge, converting a penalty in the 64th minute after a VAR review ruled a Moroccan handball.

Moments later, she turned provider, breaking through the Moroccan defence before setting up Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer.

In the 88th minute, Jennifer Echegini latched onto a loose ball in the box and slotted home to complete the remarkable turnaround, silencing the home crowd and sparking wild Nigerian celebrations.

This latest WAFCON triumph adds to Nigeria’s decorated legacy in women’s football, having now won 10 of the tournament’s 13 editions.

UN report reveals global hunger falls, but food insecurity rises in Africa

0

Sudanese women from community kitchens run by local volunteers prepare meals for people Sudanese women from community kitchens run by local volunteers prepare meals for people

Global hunger levels declined for a third consecutive year in 2024, according to a new United Nations report, as better access to food in South America and India offset deepening malnutrition and climate shocks in parts of Africa and the Middle East.

Around 673 million people, or 8.2 percent of the world’s population, experienced hunger in 2024, down from 8.5 percent in 2023, according to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, jointly prepared by five UN agencies.

The agencies include the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP).

The agencies said the report focused on chronic, long-term problems and did not fully reflect the impact of acute crises brought on by specific events and wars, including Israel’s war on Gaza.

“Conflict continues to drive hunger from Gaza to Sudan and beyond,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in remarks delivered by video link from a UN food summit in Ethiopia on Monday, adding that “hunger further feeds future instability and undermines peace”.

The WHO has warned that malnutrition in the besieged Palestinian enclave has reached “alarming levels” since Israel imposed a total blockade on March 2.

The blockade was partially lifted in May, but only a trickle of aid has been allowed to enter since then, despite warnings about mass starvation from the UN and aid organisations.

Hunger rate falls in South America, southern Asia

In 2024, the most significant progress was reported in South America and southern Asia, according to the UN report.

In South America, the hunger rate fell to 3.8 percent in 2024 from 4.2 percent in 2023. In southern Asia, it fell to 11 percent from 12.2 percent.

Progress in South America was underpinned by improved agricultural productivity and social programmes, such as school meals, Maximo Torero, the chief economist at the FAO, told news agency Reuters.

In southern Asia, it was mostly due to new data from India showing more people with access to healthy diets.

The overall 2024 hunger numbers were still higher than the 7.5 percent recorded in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hunger more prevalent in Africa

The picture was very different in Africa, where productivity gains were not keeping up with high population growth and the impacts of conflict, extreme weather and inflation.

In 2024, more than one in five people on the continent, or 307 million people, were chronically undernourished, meaning hunger is more prevalent than it was 20 years ago.

According to the current projection, 512 million people in the world may be chronically undernourished in 2030, with nearly 60 percent of them to be found in Africa, the report said.

“We must urgently reverse this trajectory,” said the FAO’s Torero.

A major mark of distress is the number of Africans unable to afford a healthy diet. While the global figure fell from 2.76 billion in 2019 to 2.6 billion in 2024, the number increased in Africa from 864 million to just over one billion during the same period.

That means the vast majority of Africans are unable to eat well on the continent of 1.5 billion people.

Inequalities

The UN report also highlighted “persistent inequalities” with women and rural communities most affected, which widened last year over 2023.

“Despite adequate global food production, millions of people go hungry or are malnourished because safe and nutritious food is not available, not accessible or, more often, not affordable,” it said.

The gap between global food price inflation and overall inflation peaked in January 2023, driving up the cost of diets and hitting low-income nations hardest, the report said.

The report also said that overall adult obesity rose to nearly 16 percent in 2022, from 12 percent in 2012.

Top NDC lawyer picks forms to contest Akwatia primaries

Mr. Baidoo notably served as the legal representative for Mr. Yiadom in his court challenge against the late Ernest Yaw Kumi’s victory in the 2024 general election.

Speaking to journalists after picking his forms, Mr. Baidoo emphasized his readiness to lead the NDC in reclaiming the seat from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“Yes, I was the NDC’s lawyer in the case between Henry Boakye Yiadom (OKOYO) and Ernest Yaw Kumi, and everyone knows I did my best. But the phase has ended; the floodgates are now open for any party member who qualifies to contest. Does it mean I can’t contest because I was the former MP’s lawyer?” he questioned.

He added, “I was still in court fighting for him, but unfortunately, everything has come to an end following Kumi’s passing.”

Mr. Baidoo, who also serves on the NDC’s Eastern Regional Legal Team, disclosed that senior figures within the party encouraged him to contest.

“I am in this race because people think I am well cut for it. I have top party bigwigs calling on me every now and then to represent the party. And when such calls come, it becomes difficult to turn down the request,” he explained.

The NDC is expected to vet the three aspirants on Thursday, July 31, and hold the primaries on Monday, August 4.

Minority threatens court action over AG’s decision to drop Duffuor charges

0

The Minority has announced its intention to take legal action against the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, over his decision to discontinue the criminal prosecution of defunct uniBank founder, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor.

The Attorney General last week revealed that the State had successfully recovered 60% of the funds involved in the criminal case, and therefore found no additional public interest in pursuing the prosecution further.

The case, which formed part of the government’s broader financial sector clean-up exercise, had charged Dr. Duffuor with offenses including theft and money laundering in relation to over GHs 663 million in liquidity support disbursed to uniBank prior to its collapse.

However, addressing journalists in Parliament, Minority Spokesperson on Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Kwame Anyimadu, expressed strong opposition to the move, describing it as a threat to justice and accountability. He called on key institutions and stakeholders to act urgently.

“We are calling on the Parliament of Ghana, particularly the Select Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, to summon the Attorney General to publicly answer for this decision,” Mr. Anyimadu said.

He also demanded that the General Legal Council and the Ghana Bar Association investigate the Attorney General for what he described as “potential breaches of legal ethics and professional conduct.”

“All patriotic Ghanaians must stand up against what appears to be the erosion of justice and the dangerous politicization of the prosecutorial process,” he added.

Mr. Anyimadu further indicated that if the Attorney General does not reverse the decision “within a reasonable time,” the Minority will proceed to court to challenge it.

“Let this press conference also serve as formal notice to the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, that if his decision is not reversed, the Minority will consider its options, including legal action to challenge the decision in its entirety,” he warned.

He concluded by invoking the principle of judicial fairness, stating: “Justice must not only be done, but it must be manifestly seen to be done.”

The announcement adds to growing public scrutiny of the Attorney General’s handling of high-profile financial crimes, particularly in the wake of similar decisions, such as the recent nolle prosequi entered in the case against Dr. Duffuor.

NPP endorses Kwame Asumadu as candidate for Akwatia by-election

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially endorsed Solomon Kwame Asumadu, Chief Executive Officer of Owuo Mining Company, as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

According to the party, the decision was made after extensive stakeholder consultations, during which a proposal to hold primaries was overwhelmingly rejected in favour of a consensus approach.

Addressing journalists in Parliament on Monday, July 28, Eastern Regional NPP Chairman, Jeff Konadu Addo, explained the process that led to the selection.

“We commissioned research. People went into the constituency and gathered all the names of individuals who had expressed interest. After assessing the report on who the most suitable candidate could be, the party found that Kwame Asumadu Solomon had emerged as the clear choice,” he said.

He added that the party’s findings were presented to the national council, which subsequently gave the green light to proceed with the necessary processes.

“Today marks the official announcement of Kwame Asumadu as the NPP’s candidate for the Akwatia by-election,” Konadu declared.

Manager of the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, Roman Fada, is urging the government and stakeholders to consider establishing a national museum in honour of the music icon and other Ghanaian highlife legends.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Roman Fada noted that Ghanaians had long expressed deep admiration for Daddy Lumba, even while he was alive, with many advocating for monuments or statues in his name.

“We need to do something in remembrance of him,” he said.
“A national museum to celebrate Daddy Lumba and other highlife legends would not only honour his legacy but also benefit the country. He was an international commodity.”

He added that such a museum would serve as a vital cultural and educational space for future generations to appreciate Ghana’s rich musical heritage.

Daddy Lumba passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra. He was 60.

We must keep campuses vibrant

The Volta Regional Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mathias Alagbo, known in his political activism as Kabila, has urged the youth wing of the party to maintain their relevance on the various campuses across the country by educating people on the ideals and principles of the NDC in order to increase the membership drive of the party.

“We can’t continue doing things like business as usual. We must take our policies and programmes to the people at all material moments and not wait for political activities before engaging them,” he emphasized.

Alagbo made these observations at the launch of a campaign to reactivate political engagements on the various tertiary campuses in the Volta Region last weekend in Ho.

As part of efforts to ensure a vibrant youth wing of the party, the leadership initiated processes for electing new executives for the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) for all chapters in the region.

On Saturday, July 26, the party conducted vetting for new TEIN executives at Ho Technical University and also participated in the UHAS School of Public Health TEIN Chapter’s general meeting.

The team later observed a handing-over ceremony in Hohoe, during which Mathias Alagbo swore into office the newly elected TEIN executives who will serve for the next academic year.

Alagbo and his team used the occasion to educate the student body and faculty present on the strides made by the NDC government under the leadership of President John Mahama in the past seven months and urged the TEIN membership and the student body to fully embrace the reset agenda of the government to make Ghana a better place for all.

The NDC leadership also expressed their gratitude to the patrons for their generosity and support.

Yango CBO meets Mahama, reaffirms commitment to Ghana

The Yango Group Chief Business Officer, Mr. Adeniyi Adebayo, has met with John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, in a high-level engagement that forms part of Yango’s ongoing commitment to social impact, economic growth and driving sustainable development through public-private collaboration in Ghana.

The meeting, held at the Jubilee House, focused on Yango’s growing impact in Ghana’s digital mobility and technology ecosystem, its vision for long-term investment, and strategic alignment with the government’s 24-hour economy and youth empowerment agenda.

President Mahama commended Yango’s role in enhancing urban mobility, supporting youth innovation through local hackathons, and promoting private sector leadership in Ghana’s digital economy.

The President welcomed the company’s intention to deepen its investment and expand partnerships across key sectors.

“To make the 24-hour economy a reality, we need strong and forward-looking partners. Digital platforms like Yango, which are powered by technology and operate across time zones, can actively contribute to this model. The goal is to generate economic value around the clock, and platforms like Yango are well-positioned to support that. Women, particularly those operating at the micro and market level, are the true backbone of our economy.

“They’re not just active, they’re responsible, reliable contributors. If we can partner with platforms like Yango to help these women formalise their businesses and access digital tools, we won’t just grow national revenue — we’ll create real, tangible value in people’s homes and communities. This is not just about a company coming to do business; it’s about aligning efforts. If we work together strategically, we can formalise sectors, support job creation, and open up new channels for economic growth that reach people at every level of society,” said President Mahama.

During the discussion, the Yango Group CBO highlighted the company’s achievements since entering the Ghanaian market—including the creation of thousands of economic opportunities for drivers and service partners, the rollout of innovative urban mobility solutions, and successful partnerships with local stakeholders in education, road safety, and digital skills development.

“Our meeting with President Mahama reinforces Yango’s strong commitment to Ghana,” said Adeniyi Adebayo.

We recognise the unique potential of this country, and we are here not just as a technology company, but as a long-term partner to the country and people of Ghana. Together, we can shape the future of smart mobility, create decent jobs, and support Ghana’s digital and economic goals.”

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), led the delegation, which included Adeniyi Adebayo, Chief Business Officer of Yango Group, Maxim Kozlov, Global Head of Public Policy at Yango Group, Zanyiwe Asare, Vice President & Head of Public Policy (Africa) , Tom Ofonime, Country Manager, Yango Ride in Ghana and Manuel Koduah, Country Manager for Yango Delivery in Ghana.

Ghana was the second African country where Yango launched its services, following Côte d’Ivoire. Since entering the market in 2019, Yango has expanded from ride-hailing to include package and cargo delivery.

Today, the company works with local transport partners and businesses to offer practical, technology-driven services adapted to everyday needs. In addition to its core operations, Yango also supports a number of community initiatives — from subsidised health services and insurance coverage for drivers, to youth-focused programs in education, sports, and digital skills development..

He expressed confidence that President John Dramani Mahama will honour the music icon with the farewell he truly deserves.

Speaking to the media on July 28, 2025, at Daddy Lumba’s private residence in Accra, Roman Fada disclosed that discussions are already underway to ensure the late singer receives a dignified burial.

“We have received positive feedback from the Presidency, and I believe that John Dramani Mahama will respond to the public’s call by granting him a befitting burial,” Roman Fada said.

The Special Committee set up by the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has settled on Solomon Kwame Asumadu as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the upcoming by-election in Akwatia.

Addressing the press at Parliament on Monday, July 28, 2025, the chairman of the Special Committee, Jeff Konadu, who is also the NPP Eastern Regional Chairman, said that they settled on Kwame Asumadu, the CEO of Owuo Mining Company, after an agreement by all interested parties.

He said that the party will now acclaim the Chief Executive Officer of Owuo Mining Company as its parliamentary candidate, with the acclamation set to follow in due course.

He explained that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) was tasked to find out whether there was a need for primaries to elect a candidate for the election.

After extensive consultation with the party’s members in Akwatia, the committee concluded that there was no need for primaries.

He indicated that after agreeing there should be no primaries, the committee also engaged the party faithful on the person to represent them in the election.

“People went into the constituency and gave them all the names that had expressed interest — Honourable Ameyaw Kyeremeh, Lawyer Owuridu, Kwame Asumadu, Daniel Nyame, Osei Appiah — to go into the constituency, into the villages, into the towns to throw out these names, to come back and report to us who the suitable person would be.

“When it came, the party saw that they had settled on Kwame Asumadu Solomon. And so we reported back to council, and council gave us a go-ahead to engage further and to follow due process, to do a popular acclamation,” he said.

All the persons who had expressed interest in representing the party were present at the press conference.

Isaac Osei Appiah, speaking on behalf of the remaining candidates, declared their support for Kwame Asumadu in the upcoming by-election.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, has expressed optimism about Ghana’s macroeconomic outlook citing a sustained decline in inflation, improving fiscal discipline, and stronger external sector performance as signs that Ghana’s economic recovery is gaining traction.

Ghana’s economy is showing strong signs of recovery with a 5.3% GDP growth rate, a drop in inflation to 13.7%, and a $3.4 billion current account surplus, according to the BoG.

Delivering opening remarks at the 125th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Meeting in Accra on Monday, July 28, 2025, Dr Asiama acknowledged headwinds but highlighted Ghana’s resilience and domestic progress.

“We meet at a time when the global and domestic macroeconomic landscape continues to evolve, offering encouraging signs of recovery while exposing persistent vulnerabilities,” he said.

According to him, inflation has been on a consistent decline, falling for six consecutive months to 13.7% in June 2025, the lowest recorded since December 2021.

This, he said, reflects disciplined monetary and fiscal policy management and the appreciation of the cedi.

Dr Asiama urged the committee to stay vigilant as some external factors could impact Ghana’s macroeconomic indicators.

‘I used ‘juju’ to break into 1860 Munich team’ – Awudu Issaka makes shocking confession

Awudu Issaka (R) during his time at 1860 Munich Awudu Issaka (R) during his time at 1860 Munich

Once hailed as one of Ghana’s brightest prospects after helping the Black Starlets win the 1995 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Ecuador, Awudu Issaka’s career took an unexpected and painful turn in Europe, where the fight for playing time led him down a path he now regrets.

In a revealing interview with Citi Sports back in 2019, Issaka confessed to turning to juju (black magic) in a desperate bid to dethrone German football legend Thomas Häßler at Bundesliga side 1860 Munich, a gamble that ultimately failed and cost him more than just money.

“My biggest obstacle at 1860 Munich was Thomas Hassler; there were times where I even prayed that he would pick up an injury so I could replace him. I even paid for a cow to be slaughtered for a blood sacrifice so I could take his spot but all to no avail. My advice to those playing now is that they should let their talent speak for them instead of trying to employ black magic against others,” he said.

Issaka further revealed that his reliance on such practices drained him financially, and urged young players to trust in their natural abilities.

“I lost a lot of money through such things, so they should concentrate on their God-given talent,” he added.

Despite his incredible skill set and early promise, Issaka’s professional career was marred by inconsistent game time and poor club decisions.

His time at 1860 Munich reached its lowest point during the 2003/04 season when the club was relegated from the Bundesliga and hit by scandal involving then-president Karl-Heinz Wildmoser.

Issaka, disillusioned and hurt, refused a demotion to the second team and the conversion of his professional contract to amateur terms. He walked away from Germany entirely, returning to Ghana, bitter and financially drained.

But amid the chaos, Issaka’s salvation came not from rituals or agents, but from his marriage to Amina Issaka, the woman who stood by him through his darkest days.

“Life became so tough that I had to rely on my wife to get by. She sold waakye to support me and the family and the business went really well. This phase taught me many valuable lessons and built my character. It taught me that life is all about what you want to achieve. She is a good wife,” he further stated.

Having retired from football, Issaka currently runs a football academy in Ghana.

We all have those days when our confidence needs a little lift. Whether it’s a big meeting, a first date, or simply trying to shake off a low mood, what you wear can shift your mindset in powerful ways.

The right outfit doesn’t just make you look good — it helps you feel ready to take on the world. Here are five tried-and-true outfit ideas that instantly boost confidence, no matter your style or body type.

Outfits That Boost Your Confidence

1. The Power Blazer and Matching Set

Late Ghanaian music legend Daddy Lumba famously brought together former Presidents Kufuor and Rawlings at a 2011 event, creating a rare moment of unity between the political rivals. Watch video below…

There’s something undeniably commanding about a tailored blazer. A structured blazer paired with matching trousers, a mini skirt, or even shorts creates a polished, intentional look that screams “I’m in control.” This outfit is perfect for job interviews, work presentations, or even fashion-forward brunches. It helps you stand taller, speak clearer, and feel more focused.

To make this outfit pop, opt for bold colours like emerald green, rust, or classic black. Pair it with a sleek bodysuit or fitted tank underneath. Finish the look with heels for added presence, or sneakers for a cool edge. The right blazer outfit makes you feel like the main character — sharp, sophisticated, and unstoppable.

2. The All-Black Fit

A monochrome black outfit is the ultimate cheat code for instant confidence. Black is timeless, elegant, and powerful. Whether it’s a sleek bodycon dress, a black jumpsuit, or a high-waisted trouser and top combo, you can’t go wrong. It gives you control and mystery, making it ideal for evening events, gallery shows, or anytime you want to exude quiet strength.

The key to keeping black outfits exciting is playing with texture — mix leather, silk, ribbed cotton, or mesh. Add bold accessories, like statement earrings or a red lip, and finish with heeled boots or strappy sandals. In an all-black outfit, you feel grounded, in charge, and magnetic — like you know exactly who you are.

3. The Effortless Casual-Chic Combo

Confidence doesn’t always come from being dressed up — sometimes it comes from feeling completely you. A great pair of high-waisted jeans, a fitted crop or tucked-in tee, and clean white sneakers can work magic. This is the perfect outfit for a productive day, errands, creative work, or just existing with style.

Go for comfort, but keep it intentional. Choose pieces that hug you in the right places without squeezing too tight. Add a crossbody bag, layered gold jewellery, or an oversized button-down for that effortless “I just threw this on” aesthetic. When you’re comfortable and cute at the same time, your confidence radiates without force.

4. The Feminine Power Dress

Every woman needs that dress — the one that makes her feel beautiful, bold, and divine. Whether it’s a flowy maxi dress, a figure-hugging midi, or a satin slip, a well-fitted dress can completely transform how you see yourself. It’s ideal for date nights, events, or even days when you’re taking yourself out just because you deserve it.

To feel your best, prioritise fit over trend. Go for silhouettes that highlight your waist or collarbones, and choose fabrics that move — like chiffon, cotton, or silk. Pair it with strappy heels or comfy mules, and don’t forget your signature scent. This outfit brings out your soft power — gentle, yet unforgettable.

5. The Bold Statement Look

On days when you refuse to shrink or blend in, reach for your boldest outfit. This could be a vibrant co-ord, a daring print, metallic pants, or that dramatic Ankara kimono you’ve been saving. It’s the outfit you wear when you’re stepping into your power and want the world to see you do it.

Serwaa Amihere and red

Bold outfits don’t require a reason — you are the reason. Choose colours that lift your mood, prints that reflect your personality, and silhouettes that make you feel like a walking billboard of confidence. Balance the look with neutral shoes or minimal makeup if needed. Wearing something bold isn’t about attention — it’s about affirmation. It says, “I’m not hiding anymore.”

Confidence doesn’t come from trends or price tags. It comes from alignment — from putting on clothes that reflect who you are and how you want to show up. These five outfits aren’t magic, but the way they make you feel just might be. So dress for the version of yourself you admire most. She’s already in you — waiting to be seen.

Chief of Bompieso in the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region, Nana Atta Brempong II, has appealed to the government to extend further the mining lease of Gold Fields Ghana Limited to continue operating the Damang mine in the region.

It would be recalled that early this year the government announced that it has taken over the Damang mine. It therefore rejected a request by Gold Fields to renew its 30-year lease for another three decades.

The gold mining company however, secured a 12-month lease extension.

Nana Brempong II, made it clear that the mining company’s lease ought to be extended further because Gold Fields has been of great help to its catchment communities.

“I do not know the nitty-gritty of the issue, but whatever it is, I am appealing to the authorities concerned to allow Gold Fields to continue operating the Damang mine”, the chief noted.

He was speaking at a brief ceremony to hand over of a 3-unit classroom block built by Gold Fields Ghana Foundation for the Bompieso M/A Basic School.

The GH¢673,000.00 classroom block has a staff common room and a headmaster’s office.

The chief mentioned one of the major projects by Gold Fields as the construction of the road from Bogoso Junction to Damang which has opened up the area.

“The company has also built many classroom blocks and given scholarships to majority of our students in various tertiary institutions,” he said.

Nana Brempong II was hopeful that the new classroom block would help to enhance access to quality basic education in the area.

For his part, the Relieving Operation Manager of Aboso Goldfields Limited, Frank Denkyi, disclosed that the Foundation has since its inception in 2004, invested heavily in its catchment areas, focusing on education, health, infrastructure, and community development

He said, “The Foundation has also offered scholarships to about 2,941 students”.

The Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Chief Executive, Matthew Ayeh, praised the Foundation for its sustainable development initiatives in its host communities.

The head teacher of Bompieso M/A School, Joseph Mensah who also commended Gold Fields Foundation for the project, promised to ensure that the classroom block is well maintained.

Ato Essien’s plea bargain was fueled by fear

KSM is a renowned satirist and media personality KSM is a renowned satirist and media personality

Renowned Ghanaian satirist and media personality, Kweku Sintim-Misa, popularly known as KSM, has shared a poignant perspective on the incarceration of former Capital Bank CEO, Ato Essien, suggesting that fear, rather than guilt, led to his plea bargain.

Speaking on Kaly Jay’s X Space discussion titled “Are Ghanaian Prisons Becoming a Place of Silent Execution?” on Sunday, July 28, 2025, KSM cautioned young people against allowing fear to dictate their decisions, citing Essien’s case as an example.

KSM recounted the sequence of events leading to Ato Essien’s imprisonment, emphasising Essien’s belief in his innocence regarding the accusations that arose during the banking sector clean-up.

“He actually knew that he was innocent of all the accusations. He knew that. But the fear of going to jail was so much upon him that when the prosecutors asked him to plea bargain, he was so afraid of going to jail that he thought that maybe if he does a plea bargain and accept his guilt, which he wasn’t really, that would prevent him from being thrown into jail,” KSM said.

He further revealed that Essien’s lawyers vehemently advised against the plea bargain, asserting his innocence.

However, driven by the intense dread of incarceration, Essien proceeded with the plea bargain, a decision KSM asserts is the very reason he is currently in prison.

“Sadly, the plea bargain is the reason he’s in jail now,” KSM said, highlighting the irony and tragedy of the situation.

He used the opportunity to advise his younger audience; “Don’t let fear lead you into any kind of mistake like that.”

Dr John Apea, Head of Missions for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council and a Board Member of the Commonwealth Human Rights Office in Africa, corroborated KSM’s sentiments, particularly regarding the detrimental impact of fear.

Dr Apea, who recently visited Ato Essien in prison, stressed the importance of resisting external pressure, especially for young people.

“Fear is something that saddens me a lot, you know, because a lot of the time we can be pressurised into doing things that we don’t want to do, especially the youth,” Apea said.

He also underscored the principle that no one, regardless of age or background, should be compelled to act against their will.

The discussion also delved into the broader state of Ghana’s prison services.

KSM, with some experience of visiting inmates at Nsawam Medium Security Prison, acknowledged the presence of recreational facilities, such as football pitches and even a small hospital; however, he noted that the severe overcrowding, where inmates often take turns sleeping, and the lack of effective rehabilitation programs.

“The rehabilitative aspect of the whole prison system is very lacking,” he said, advocating for opportunities that expose inmates to skills and trades that can transform them into useful members of society upon release, rather than hardening them further.

Dr Apea, while acknowledging KSM’s deeper familiarity with the prisons, reiterated his stance that a prison, while not a five-star institution, should not be a death sentence.

He stressed that prisons should serve as places of correction and accountability, aligning with the United Nations Mandela rules, which advocate for similar standards of healthcare and facilities inside prisons as outside, drawing attention to the importance of dignity for inmates.

Ashanti Regional Minister Hails ECG for Quick Fault Fix

0

By Naa Shormei Odonkor

Kumasi, July 28, GNA – Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has praised the Electricity Company of Ghana ECG Adum District for swiftly fixing a dangerous electrical fault threatening residents.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Dr Amoakohene wrote, “Thanks to the swift response from the ECG team, the matter has been attended to. I encourage feedback if the problem has been fully resolved.”

His post followed a public appeal made through Facebook, where a user tagged the Minister in a post highlighting the fault and its risks to public safety. The Minister then alerted the ECG for urgent intervention.

Mrs. Vivian Quansah, Manager of ECG’s Adum District, expressed appreciation for the Minister’s recognition, saying the acknowledgement reflected that the company’s efforts were being noticed and appreciated.

She told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that in response to the report, ECG promptly replaced a worn-out service cable that was delivering shocks to individuals who accidentally touched the affected pole. Additional maintenance works were also carried out to ensure the safety of residents.

Mrs. Quansah further commended Mr. Danny Young, the Facebook user who initially reported the issue and tagged the Minister, for his civic action.

She encouraged the public to continue supporting ECG by reporting illegal activities, electrical faults, transformer vandalism, and other challenges to the appropriate authorities, as the company remains committed to providing safe and reliable electricity.

In a follow-up comment on the Minister’s post, Mr. Young confirmed that the fault had been resolved and lauded Dr Amoakohene for his responsive leadership.

Duffour case: Rescind decision or face us in court

0

The Minority has asked the Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, to immediately reverse his decision to discontinue the high-profile criminal case against Dr. Kwabena Duffour and seven others, or face legal action.

Addressing journalists in Accra on Monday, July 28, the Ranking Member on the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, criticised the Attorney-General’s decision to enter a nolle prosequi — a legal procedure used to drop charges — in The Republic v. Kwabena Duffour & 7 Others.

The case stemmed from alleged financial crimes uncovered during the Bank of Ghana’s financial sector clean-up exercise, with UniBank at the center of the controversy and a staggering GHS 5.7 billion reportedly unaccounted for.

“The Attorney-General’s decision calls for serious scrutiny,” the he declared, calling the move “legally questionable and ethically dangerous,” with serious implications for justice, public accountability, and the fight against financial crimes in Ghana.

Anyimadu-Antwi challenged several aspects of the Attorney-General’s justification for discontinuing the case, particularly the newly introduced “60% recovery threshold” cited in a July 22 press release.

According to the Attorney-General, this benchmark — met by the accused — served as grounds to halt the prosecution in the national interest.

But the Minority raised pressing questions:

* What is the legal basis of this 60:40 recovery policy?
* Was it ever made public or approved by Parliament?
* Why was no court-supervised plea bargain or conviction secured, as required under Section 35 of the Courts Act?

Anyimadu-Antwi further accused the Attorney-General of sidestepping well-established legal procedures.

“This approach ignores both the principles of plea bargaining under Ghana’s criminal law and the requirement that restitution must be supervised by the courts,” he argued.

Anyimadu-Antwi also raised a potential conflict of interest involving Dr. Ayine, questioning whether he had previously served as legal counsel for Dr. Duffour, and demanding clarity on the implications of such a relationship if it existed.

In a call to action, he urged Parliament, the Ghana Bar Association, civil society, and the general public to resist what they described as a dangerous precedent that undermines justice.

“We are giving formal notice to the Attorney-General. If this decision is not reversed within a reasonable time, we will proceed to court to challenge it in its entirety,” Anyimadu-Antwi warned.

He concluded by emphasising that “justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done,” and reiterated their commitment to upholding transparency, rule of law, and public trust in Ghana’s legal system.

MELPWU Renews Call for Medical Laboratory Science Council

0

By Maxwell Awumah

Ho, July 28, GNA – Dr. Cephas K. Akortor, General Secretary of Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) has renewed calls for a Medical Laboratory Science Council to guarantee direct representation on national regulatory bodies, standard-setting agencies, and key health policy-making platforms.

Speaking at the Fourth Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Society of Medical Laboratory Managers (SMLM)-Ghana in Ho, Dr. Akortor said such a council would eliminate dependence on third-party advocates unfamiliar with the profession’s intricacies. It would also align Ghana with international best practices where independent councils—such as the UK’s Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and Canada’s Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO)—regulate the field.

Dr. Akortor also advocated for the creation of Medical Laboratory Directorates at all healthcare levels, from CHPS compounds to CHAG institutions, the Ghana Health Service (GHS), and Teaching Hospitals. These directorates, he said, would serve as focal points for both managerial and regulatory competence.

The AGM was held under the theme: “Medical Laboratory Managers’ Involvement in the Core Management: A Necessity in Restructuring Healthcare Delivery in Ghana.”

He emphasised the need for laboratory managers to be institutionalized within hospital management structures, procurement boards, and planning teams, while also calling for the formal recognition of specialist qualifications in the regulatory and public service architecture.

“Behind every accurate diagnosis and informed clinical decision is a well-managed laboratory. Yet, our healthcare system continues to sideline the very professionals who uphold its core,” he lamented, adding that over 70% of clinical decisions are based on laboratory data.

Dr. Akortor questioned why laboratory departments—often major revenue generators for hospitals—are excluded from strategic decision-making, only to be blamed when systems falter.

He stressed that laboratory services are not auxiliary but central to healthcare delivery, and the demand for inclusion is a legal entitlement. He cited national and international frameworks, including: ILO Convention 111 (1958), ratified by Ghana in 1961, Ghana’s Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) – Sections 10, 13, and 97 anf GHS and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 525) – Sections 6(1)(h), 11, 12, and 48(2)(h).

“These legal provisions enshrine the rights of all health professionals, including medical laboratory scientists, to full representation in governance and leadership,” he noted. “Exclusion constitutes structural discrimination and must end.”

He called on members to work in unity with MELPWU, the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS), and other stakeholders to assert their rightful place in Ghana’s health system.

“To policymakers and authorities, we say respectfully but firmly: we will no longer accept structural invisibility. The future of healthcare must be built on inclusion,” he declared. “Let this AGM spark a renewed spirit of advocacy and transformation. The time to act is now.”

Prof. Samuel Essien-Baidoo, President of the Ghana Chapter of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (WAPCMLS), echoed the call for reform, saying the restructuring of Ghana’s health system must recognize the strategic, ethical, and legal competencies of medical laboratory managers.

Prof. Essien-Baidoo, also Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), said diagnostics must become the engine of a 24-hour healthcare model—ensuring timely diagnosis, emergency responsiveness, and continuity of care.

“At the heart of this model must be lab managers whose oversight ensures reliable and resilient diagnostic services around the clock,” he said.

These new travel agreements form part of a broader foreign policy and mobility strategy aimed at improving international access and travel freedom for Ghanaian citizens.

Ablakwa attributed this feat to the government’s continued efforts to position the Ghanaian passport as one of the most respected travel documents globally.

1. Morocco

On June 12, 2025, Ghana signed and implemented a ‘No Visa Policy’ with Morocco for Ghanaian passport holders.

‘Ato Essien is critically-ill in prison, do we leave him there?’ – John Apea urges clemency

0

The Head of Missions at the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council and Board Member of the Commonwealth Human Rights Office for Africa, Dr John Apea, has renewed calls for presidential clemency for William Ato Essien.

Dr John Apea cited the founder of the defunct Capital Bank’s severely deteriorated health as a compelling reason.

In a discussion on X Spaces on Sunday, Dr Apea revealed that Essien is now wheelchair-bound, suffering from a spinal injury sustained while in custody.

Highlighting the emotional and physical toll of Essien’s condition, Dr Apea stated that; “As it stands now, Ato is not receiving the necessary medical care that a prison facility or within the prison walls that he needs, you know?

“So, that’s why, for me, the clemency is the biggest thing I’m most interested in now, court, case, capital, bank, all that stuff. I don’t want to meddle in politics either. Let the lawyer deal with that one step at a time. But for now, we have to look at what the real issue is. The real issue is that here’s our father, here’s our brother, here’s our son who can’t take care of himself in prison because he’s in ill health. Do we leave him there? Is that rehabilitation, or is that a death penalty? We don’t have capital punishment for financial crimes in Ghana, but is this a silent execution that we are putting people who are ill through? I don’t think that should be the case.”

Dr Apea questioned the integrity of Ghana’s justice system in this context, drawing attention to the contrast in treatment between Essien and other high-profile figures convicted of financial crimes.

He pointed out that Dr Kwabena Duffuor, formerly of uniBank, had been released under similar circumstances, yet Ato Essien remains incarcerated, despite his medical hardship.

Dr Apea explained that the petition is not about Mr Essien’s wealth or business standing, but rather about fairness and mercy.

William Ato Essien was convicted in December 2022 for allegedly embezzling over GH¢90 million from Capital Bank, funds acquired through Bank of Ghana liquidity support.

Although initially spared a custodial sentence via a restitution agreement, he was later jailed in late 2023 after failing to fulfill the payment terms.

The clemency campaign asserts William Ato Essien paid substantial sums toward restitution and challenges the legality of his conviction, citing concerns that he lacked the financial means for elite legal defense and may have been treated unfairly.

Dr Apea has announced a formal petition to change.org, calling for clemency on humanitarian and justice grounds.

State witness tells court he withdrew monies from bank and gave them to Adu Boahene in big bags State witness tells court he withdrew monies from bank and gave them to Adu Boahene in big bags

Frank Anane Dekpey, the first prosecution witness in the trial of former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, his wife, and two others, has presented his testimony to the court hearing the case.

According to a report by graphiconline.com, Frank Anane Dekpey, who was a chauffeur, mounted the witness box on July 18, 2025, to testify on behalf of the state.

The report indicated that Anane Dekpey gave testimony on how he transferred money between the first accused in the case, Kwabena Adu Boahene, and the third accused, Mildred Donkor, a former relationship officer of UMB Bank.

The prosecution witness reportedly told the court that he mainly transferred the money to the accused persons using large “Ghana Must Go” bags.

He told the court that anytime he went to the bank on the instructions of the accused persons, the bank staff gave him a receipt to write his name, telephone number, and append his signature.

Anane Dekpey also told the court that he only sent the money he withdrew from the bank to either Adu Boahene or Mildred Donkor, and not to the second accused in the case, Adu Boahene’s wife, Angela Adjei Boateng.

“I normally took instructions from Mildred Donkor (former relationship officer of UMB Bank), with the envelope sealed, to the UMB Bank, Labone.

“Then I gave it to one of the employees and waited until the money was ready, then I picked it up,” the witness is quoted to have said.

The Office of the Attorney General slapped Kwabena Adu Boahene; his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng; their associate, Mildred Boateng; and a company jointly owned by Adu Boahene and his wife, Advantage Solutions Limited, with 11 charges for allegedly transferring GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to his personal account.

Addressing the press on Monday, March 24, 2025, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine stated that Adu Boahene was implicated in the unauthorised transfer of $7 million, originally allocated for cybersecurity infrastructure, into his private accounts.

“In his capacity as Director of the National Signals Bureau, Adu Boahene, on January 30, 2020, signed a contract on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the National Security on the one hand, and on the other hand, an Israeli company named RLC Holdings Limited. The contract was for the purchase of a cyber defense system software at a price of $7 million,” the Attorney General said.

“We will make this the best marathon in Africa. The Absa Black Star Marathon is not just a race; it’s a celebration of Ghana’s spirit, resilience and beauty,” President Mahama declared to a crowd of athletes, dignitaries, and tourism officials.

The inaugural Absa Black Star Marathon, which took place on July 26, 2025, has drawn thousands of runners from across Africa and beyond.

The event featured a full 42.2km marathon, a half-marathon, a 10km race, and a 5km fun run, catering to both elite athletes and recreational participants.

The race route showcased iconic landmarks such as the Black Star Square, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, and the vibrant streets of Accra.

The tourism minister emphasised the marathon’s role in boosting Ghana’s tourism sector.

“This event will highlight our cultural heritage, from the rhythms of our music to the warmth of our people. It’s a chance to show the world why Ghana is the heart of Africa,” she said.

Organisers have also prioritised sustainability, partnering with local environmental groups to ensure a plastic-free event and promote eco-friendly practices.

The Marathon promises to be a landmark event, uniting sport and culture while positioning Ghana as a must-visit destination.

With the government’s full backing, the race is set to leave an indelible mark on Africa’s sporting and tourism landscape.

The victim, identified by family and community members as Dunia Tuhenya, was fatally wounded in a shooting that took place at the Chateau Village apartment complex on the city’s south side.

Emergency services responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 8:00 p.m. and found the teenager with critical injuries.

He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, but as of Monday morning, no arrests had been made.

Police have not released information regarding suspects or possible motives, and are urging members of the public to come forward with any relevant information.

He was reportedly preparing to return to school in the autumn and had aspirations of pursuing higher education.

Classmates described him as quiet, hardworking, and well-liked among peers.

The shooting has sparked concern among local residents and members of the Tanzanian diaspora, who gathered over the weekend for a vigil in his memory.

Community leaders and youth advocates have called for increased security in residential areas and greater investment in violence prevention programmes.

Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey said in a brief statement that the city mourns the tragic loss and is committed to supporting law enforcement in their investigation.

“This young man’s life was cut short far too soon,” Harvey said. “We stand with his family and demand justice.”

The incident adds to a growing list of gun-related deaths involving teenagers in the Hudson Valley region, prompting renewed calls for action on gun violence.

CPA commends FDA for seizing two 40-foot containers of fake diapers

0

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has applauded the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for what it described as a major breakthrough in the fight against counterfeit products, following the seizure of over 360 bales of fake diapers at Community 12 in Tema.

The operation, carried out on Thursday, July 24, 2025, by the FDA enforcement team in Tema, was based on intelligence that led officials to a residential facility where the counterfeit goods were discovered.

According to the CPA, the seized diapers—equivalent to two 40-foot containers—were imported by a company allegedly identified as Natural Power.

Investigations revealed that the importers attempted to evade detection by mislabeling the contents on their invoices as “Disposable Plywoven Bags” under HS Code 392329, instead of the correct HS Code 9619 for diapers.

In a related development, two additional containers suspected to contain fake diapers and imported by FK Clearing Cleaning Logistics (trading as Ness-D Diapers) have been impounded at the Meridian Port Services (MPS) terminal in Tema.

The clearing agent reportedly fled and abandoned the containers in June 2025, raising further concerns about the scale of counterfeit diaper importation.

The CPA praised both the FDA and Customs officials for their vigilance, stating that their efforts have potentially saved over 2.5 million Ghanaian children from health risks associated with using substandard diapers.

Executive Director of the CPA in charge of Media and Arbitration, Nana Prempeh Okogyeabour Aduhene, in a statement on Monday, July 28, called on authorities to prosecute the importers to serve as a deterrent to others.

He also disclosed that the CPA had identified two more fake diaper importers and would forward their details to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for further investigation.

This latest bust comes months after the FDA seized and destroyed over 1 million fake diapers in April 2025, highlighting its continued commitment to protecting consumers.

CPA COMMENDS FDA FOR MASSIVE BREAKTHROUGH ON FAKE DIAPERS IMPORTERS SYNDICATE AS OVER 360 BALES OF FAKE DIAPERS WERE SIEZED AT COMMUNITY 12 TEMA.

The CPA is much elated that the FDA has intensified its fight against the importation of fake diapers in the country.

On Thursday, the 24th of July 2025, the FDA enforcement team in Tema and acting on intelligence seized approximately 360 bales of fake diapers at a house in Tema.

The quantity of these fake diapers is about two containers of 40 40-foot load. This shipment was imported by a company called NATURAL POWER, where invoices of the consignment at the Tema port were declared as Disposable Plywoven bag (HS Code 392329 instead of 9619) to outwit customs and FDA officials.

Another two fake diaper containers that have been impounded by customs at the port parked at MPS port for FK Clearing Cleaning Logistics (Ness-D diapers), had the clearing agent running away and leaving the containers to their fate since June 2025.

The CPA duly also commend the Customs officials for rising up to the occasion and saving over 2.5 million children of this country from health implications as the result of the use of these fake diapers.

The CPA therefore recommend both the FDA and the GRA Customs Division to hand over the importers to the police or National security for prosecution, which will serve as a deterrent to others who want to follow the same.

The CPA, upon intelligence has discovered two more importers of fake diapers that we will officially write to the NIB for further action. Attached are pictures of fake diapers seized on Thursday 24th July 2025 and two other containers impounded by customs with fake diapers.

This is in line with the commendation of the FDA when it seized and burnt over 1 million fake diapers in April 2025.
