Targeted marketing key to SME success – MTN Business Manager

0

Benedict Bentil, a Senior Manager at MTN Business, has urged small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana to adopt strategic and data-driven approaches to marketing in order to achieve sustainable growth.

Speaking on Week three of the Citi Business Festival On-Air Series, which focuses on marketing for SMEs, Mr. Bentil emphasised the need for businesses to move away from generic, one-size-fits-all marketing methods.

“When it comes to market segmentation, it is not a one-size-fits-all. It is not a ‘spray and pray’ approach,” he stated.

“Understand what your product does for people and the type of people who patronise your product.”

He noted that many SMEs in Ghana lack customer relationship management (CRM) systems, which are crucial for tracking customer demographics and behaviour.

Without this, he added, businesses often fail to align their marketing strategies with their actual customer base.

“If you understand that your customer base is between teenage to about 25 years old who are social media heavy, you wouldn’t be investing your marketing strategy in traditional media; you will invest in social media, because that is where they spend most of their time,” Mr. Bentil explained.

He stressed that understanding the customer base is key to business growth, adding that targeted marketing helps SMEs make informed decisions and maximise returns on their marketing investments.

‘I didn’t intentionally touch her buttocks’ – Medikal on ordeal with female fan

Rapper, Medikal has debunked claims that he intentionally touched a UG student's buttocks Rapper, Medikal has debunked claims that he intentionally touched a UG student’s buttocks

Ghanaian rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, has responded to allegations that he inappropriately touched a female fan during a performance at the Evandy Hall Week celebrations.

Medikal came under heavy criticism after he was accused of deliberately touching the fan’s buttocks while hugging her on stage.

However, in response to the backlash, the “Omo Ada” hitmaker has firmly denied any intentional misconduct.

According to him, the narrative being circulated online is misleading and part of an agenda to damage his reputation.

“I was performing at Evandy and invited one of my fans on stage. I wanted us to dance, but she told me she had a boyfriend, so I respected that and let her go. While hugging her, I accidentally touched her buttocks. It wasn’t intentional, people are reading too much into it,” he explained.

Medikal also cautioned social media users against spreading false information, emphasising that he holds his fans, especially women, in high regard.

“To those guys who sit around spreading fake news about me, stop it. I won’t intentionally invite someone on stage and disrespect her like that.

“And to those calling it sexual harassment, stop that nonsense. I respect women, especially my fans. I don’t joke with my fans, so stop spreading the wrong narrative,” he said.

NPP’s First Vice Chairperson chairs NEC meeting as Ntim begins medical leave

The First Vice Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP), Danquah Smith Buttey, chaired a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in the absence of the party’s National Chairman, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, according to a report by citinewsroom.com

This development follows a formal letter from Stephen Ntim’s family to the NEC on June 16, 2025, requesting that he should be temporarily excused from official duties due to medical reasons.

According to the family, his continued involvement in party activities could further endanger his health and infringe on his rights.

The letter jointly signed by family members including Kingsley Oteng (Family Head), Adelaide Ntim (MP), and other close relatives, further reaffirmed Stephen Ntim’s decades of commitment to the party, from his time as First National Deputy Chairman to his current role as National Chairman.

“Common sense dictates that Stephen, as a matter of urgency, be temporarily excused, not only from rigorous active politics but from intra-party activities in order to make way for needed peace and solace and for concentration on the ongoing required medical treatment process,” part of the letter read.

Consequently, Buttey stepped in to chair the NEC session, which touched on the progress of the party’s Constitutional Review Committee.

TCDA issues mandatory directives to regulate palm oil imports in Ghana

Palm oil (R) importers have been advised to obtain permit before importation Palm oil (R) importers have been advised to obtain permit before importation

The Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA) has issued a directive mandating all importers of Crude Palm Oil (CPO), Crude Palm Olein, and Palm Olein (refined vegetable oil) to register and obtain a permit from the authority before engaging in any importation activities.

This bold step aims to strengthen regulation and streamline operations within Ghana’s vital oil palm sector.

These directives, which take effect from July 14, 2025, are anchored in the Tree Crops Development Authority Act, 2019 (Act 1010), and the TCDA Legislative Instrument LI 2471.

This applies to all actors and entities operating within the oil palm value chain, from importers and processors to traders.

The oil palm industry plays a critical role in Ghana’s agricultural economy, providing employment for thousands of smallholder farmers and processors, and contributing significantly to the country’s agro-industrial ambitions.

However, the unregulated importation of palm oil products has posed challenges to local producers, including market distortion and quality control issues.

Kenya’s deputy police chief steps aside amid uproar over blogger’s death

Albert Ojwang's death in police custody about a week ago has caused outrage in Kenya Albert Ojwang’s death in police custody about a week ago has caused outrage in Kenya

Kenya’s deputy police chief Eliud Lagat has stepped aside pending the outcome of investigations into the death in detention of blogger Albert Ojwang.

Mr Lagat had been under pressure to resign from the opposition and human rights activists as Mr Ojwang was arrested after he filed a complaint, accusing the blogger of defaming him on social media.

Police initially said that Mr Ojwang died of self-inflicted wounds, but were forced to retract the statement after an autopsy found that he was likely to have died from assault wounds.

Mr Lagat denied any wrongdoing, but said in a statement that he was stepping aside in the “good and conscious thought” of his responsibilities as deputy police chief.

“I undertake to provide any support that may be required of me during the investigations of the unfortunate incident,” Mr Lagat said.

“I offer immense condolences to the family of Mr Albert Ojwang for their great loss,” he added.

Until the investigation is concluded, Mr Lagat will have no access to his office, and his duties will be performed by his deputy.

This comes amid intensifying pressure, with more demonstrations planned this week by activists demanding a transparent investigation into the 31-year-old blogger’s death.

Mr Ojwang was arrested in his village of Kakoth, near the western town of Homa Bay, on 7 June. He was then driven to the main police station in Nairobi, and was reported to have died a few days later.

Kenya’s President William Ruto spoke with Mr Ojiang’s father, Meshack Opiyo, following his son’s death, the local Daily Nation news site reports.

“He [Ruto] said: ‘I’m sorry,’ and we spoke at length. His words were sincere,” Mr Opiyo is quoted as saying.

Ruto promised to give the family two million Kenyan shillings ($15,500; £11,4000) to help cover funeral costs, while veteran opposition politician Raila Odinga, who also spoke to the family, pledged half the amount, the newspaper reports.

In an initial statement, police said Mr Ojwang was found unconscious in his cell and was rushed to a city hospital, where he succumbed to head injuries allegedly sustained from banging his head against the wall.

But an autopsy report and an investigation by the police watchdog, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), ruled out the possibility that Mr Ojwang might have killed himself.

While investigations continue, the head of the police station has been detained, along with another officer and a technician accused of disabling the station’s CCTV.

Police chief Douglas Kanja has apologised for the initial police claim that the blogger died of self-inflicted wounds, saying it was based on “misinformation” from his juniors.

Ruto has called for a swift investigation, and has promised that his government would “protect citizens from rogue police officers”.

Ruto first pledged to end Kenya’s history of police brutality and extrajudicial killings when he came to power in 2022.

But nearly 160 cases of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances were reported across Kenya last year, according to the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC).

At least 20 people have died while in police detention in the past four months alone, according to the IPOA.

Without a cap at Supreme Court, more will come, and it won’t help – Ansa-Asare warns

0

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has strongly opposed the idea of maintaining an uncapped number of judges at the Supreme Court, warning that such flexibility could be exploited for political gains.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Ansa-Asare argued that without a constitutional limit, successive presidents could manipulate the bench to suit their personal or political interests.

“When the number is left unlimited, it opens the door for abuse. Every president who comes to power will want to appoint more judges to the Supreme Court, not necessarily to strengthen justice delivery, but to reward allies. It has become too political,” he said.

He cited the United States as an example of a system with stability, where the number of Supreme Court justices has been fixed at nine, including the Chief Justice.

“In America, the number is nine. It’s capped. That way, no president wakes up one day to increase it for political convenience,” he added.

Mr. Ansa-Asare expressed worry that the current nomination of seven new justices might not be the end.

“It won’t be long before another one is added. That’s the fear. And it won’t help,” he stressed.

He also disagreed with Supreme Court judge nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe, who had earlier supported the current constitutional arrangement that allows for an unlimited number of judges at the apex court.

Justice Dzamefe, during his vetting on Monday, defended the status quo, arguing that increasing the number of judges would help reduce the Supreme Court’s caseload, especially in matters related to land, chieftaincy, and constitutional interpretation.

“The framers of the Constitution knew why they didn’t cap the number. So far as it is not capped, I am for it,” Justice Dzamefe said.

But Mr. Ansa-Asare believes such flexibility undermines the independence of the judiciary.

“I don’t agree with Justice Dzamefe or anyone who says the numbers should be left unlimited. Politics has become a job for the boys and girls. Maybe when someone becomes president, they already have people they want to promote or reward,” he said.

He called on Parliament and constitutional experts to relook at the arrangement and establish a firm ceiling on the number of justices at the Supreme Court to preserve its integrity and independence.

“This is not about personalities. It’s about protecting the sanctity of the court,” he stated.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is working with Israeli authorities to obtain clearance for a possible evacuation of Ghanaian nationals following the escalation of conflict between Israel and Iran.

In an update posted on Facebook on Tuesday, [June 16, 2025], the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said 922 Ghanaians have so far been identified in Israel. Among them are 65 students enrolled at six different universities.

Mr Ablakwa confirmed that there have been no reports of Ghanaian fatalities or injuries in either Israel or Iran. He also disclosed that evacuation efforts from Iran are already underway.

He explained that due to Israel’s declaration of a state of emergency and the closure of all borders, evacuation from that country cannot currently take place without the express authorisation of Israeli authorities.

He said the Ministry is actively engaging those authorities in pursuit of that authorisation.

Mr Ablakwa added that regular communication channels have been established between Ghana’s embassy and the Ghanaian community in Israel.

He noted that access to bomb shelters has been arranged for all Ghanaian residents, and embassy staff are now working from home following advice from the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

According to the Minister, an emergency evacuation plan for Israel has been approved by the Ministry and will be activated once the necessary conditions are met.

Go and join NPP if your plan is to acquire properties – NDC’s Kwetey to government appointees

Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey is the NDC General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey is the NDC General Secretary

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, has issued a word of caution to members of the party and appointees of the ruling government.

Addressing a gathering at a yet-to-be-identified event in a video shared on Facebook on June 16, 2025, Fiifi Kwetey cautioned members whose sole motive is to create and amass wealth during their time in government to desist from doing so.

According to him, anyone who harbors such motives is not meant to be a member of the NDC but the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing the party’s zero tolerance for corruption and its commitment to maintaining integrity.

“I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with having a property, but I’m saying if your motive and your reason for being a member of this party is what you can get, then you are in the wrong party. Look for the NPP, that is your party,” he said.

The politician also went on to bemoan how some individuals, after gaining power and the opportunity to serve, rush to illegally amass wealth within a short period, prioritising their selfish interest over the country’s welfare.

He reiterated his strong disapproval of such practices occurring under the NDC’s regime and government, cautioning members to desist from such actions.

“You need to understand who we are. They are in a hurry to own world properties that people have worked for 30 years and they don’t have. In a hurry to drive vehicles that people who have worked as ministers they don’t have. They think by joining this party, they get an opportunity to be able to make something for themselves,” he added.

I rejected Mahama’s offer to chair NHIA board – Speaker Bagbin discloses

0

Speaker Alban Bagbin (R) exchanging pleasantries with President John Dramani Mahama Speaker Alban Bagbin (R) exchanging pleasantries with President John Dramani Mahama

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has disclosed that he rejected an appointment to chair the Board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIS) by President John Dramani Mahama.

He made this disclosure while bemoaning the practice of Members of Parliament taking on ministerial and other executive positions, including being members of boards of state agencies.

According to him, this practice grossly affects Parliament’s role of overseeing the work of the Executive.

He argued that members of the House cannot sit on boards of state agencies to make decisions, and then the same decisions are brought to them as legislators to approve.

“I, for example, as Majority Leader in 2009, when I was offered a position to be Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, I rejected it. I could not see the authority of a Majority Leader – the leader of the House – as a minister to be under the dictates and directives of the Executive. So, I have always argued against the Majority Leader, the leader of the House, being a Minister of State.

“People disagreed with me and they continued. Today, I was offered to be Chair of the National Health Insurance Authority. As you all know, Speakers chair it. I rejected it because I think it’s not proper to go and chair the board, submit reports under the supervision of a minister. The Speaker is now under a minister, and the report will come to the House and the House will now be presided over by the minister – the Speaker,” he said.

“I said, no, I rejected it but that’s what used to happen. Some of you don’t know that it’s not proper. You cannot go and chair the boards, the corporations, work over there, submit reports through the minister, the minister submits the report to Parliament. Then you come and preside over those reports and approve or disapprove. Please, issues of conflict of interest and prejudice arise,”he added.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) from the national grid over an outstanding debt of GH¢1 billion.

This action is part of ECG’s nationwide operation to hold all defaulters accountable. GWCL joins a growing list of institutions and individuals who owe ECG substantial sums through illegal connections and other irregularities.

On Monday June 16, 2025, the Revenue Team from ECG’s Accra East Division uncovered widespread illegal electricity connections at Rehoboth Estate in Kweiman.

During an inspection of the estate, the team discovered that over 100 newly constructed homes had been illegally connected to the electricity grid.

Additionally, a block factory within the estate was found to be using an illegal connection to power its operations.

In a video shared by JoyNews on X, members of the ECG team were heard expressing their frustration, “They don’t have meters. These people are very wicked. There are cables on the floor. Almost everybody has an air conditioner in this estate.”

JoyNews further reported that, following the discovery of widespread power theft, the illegally connected block factory, which supplies construction materials, was disconnected from the power supply.

Eunice Nana Agyemang, Accra East Revenue Protection Manager of ECG, who led the operation, noted that the team had uncovered large-scale electricity theft in the area. She explained that the exercise has been ongoing for the past two weeks.

Govt Secures Funding For Damongo Water Project – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government has secured funding to address the water crisis in Damongo, in the Savannah Region.

He revealed that the European Union has provided financial support for the construction of a water supply system in Damongo.

“We have all the designs ready, and the European Union has offered funding to execute the project,” he disclosed.

During his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Savannah Region, President Mahama assured the residents of Damongo that the government is committed to resolving the water crisis, with the project expected to commence soon.

“Your Majesty, access to clean water is not a luxury but a basic right. The Damongo water supply system which has been delayed for far too long will be operational soon,” he told Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I.

President Mahama expressed optimism that once the project is completed, Damongo and its surrounding areas will have access to clean water.

“This project will draw water from Yapei and supply it to Damongo. I am pleased to announce that it will serve the 8,000 residents of Damongo and its environs,” he added.

The previous NPP administration had cut sod for the Damongo Water Supply Project, which involved a credit facility of $49 million from UK Export Finance and Deutsche Bank AG.

Currently, the existing Damongo Water Supply System relies on water abstraction from an irrigation dam. However, since 2005, the plant has been non-operational due to siltation issues caused by unfavourable climatic conditions. As a result, residents of Damongo have had to rely on private hand-dug wells and boreholes equipped with hand pumps for their water needs.

The construction of the new Water Supply System aims to meet the water demands of Damongo and its surrounding communities until 2040, in line with government policy. The system is projected to serve a population of approximately 68,000 people, with an expected average water demand of about 8,800 cubic meters per day.

Ato Forson celebrates Fitch Ratings upgrade; Says Ghana’s recovery has just begun

0

Ghana’s Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has described the latest upgrade of the country’s sovereign credit rating by Fitch Ratings as a strong endorsement of the government’s economic management and a signal of growing international confidence in Ghana’s recovery prospects.

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, June 16, Dr Forson stated: “I assure you—this is only the beginning. We are unwavering in our resolve to fully revive the economy and deliver lasting relief and shared prosperity to you, the good people of Ghana.”

The minister’s remarks came shortly after global credit ratings agency Fitch Ratings announced it had upgraded Ghana’s Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) from ‘Restricted Default’ (RD) to ‘B-’, assigning the country a Stable Outlook.

The upgrade, Fitch said, reflects the country’s success in completing the US$13.1 billion Eurobond debt restructuring, and acknowledges improving macroeconomic indicators, including disinflation, a strengthening currency, and a narrowing fiscal deficit.

According to Fitch, Ghana’s inflation rate has dropped significantly, from a high of over 50 per cent in early 2023 to 18.4 per cent as of May 2025—the lowest in more than three years. The agency projects that inflation will fall to 15 per cent by the end of 2025 and reach 10 per cent in 2026, a development that has already led to lower import costs and improved consumer sentiment.

The Ghanaian cedi has also appreciated in value since April, helping to stabilise domestic prices, particularly in fuel and food. This currency recovery, coupled with declining inflation, has helped ease pressure on the Bank of Ghana and created space for potential interest rate cuts later this year.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s fiscal position continues to improve. Public debt, which peaked at 93 per cent of GDP in 2022, is now projected to decline to 60 per cent by the end of 2025, supported by fiscal consolidation and improved investor confidence. The country’s gross international reserves have also risen to US$6.8 billion, offering greater buffers against external shocks.

The government has set a target of achieving a primary budget surplus before the end of 2025. This, Dr Forson said, would provide further proof of Ghana’s resolve to restore macroeconomic stability and sustain growth.

LatexFoamPromo

Fitch’s report also projects that real GDP growth will reach 4 per cent in 2025, driven by a rebound in agriculture, expansion in industry, and sustained momentum in services. The government has identified these sectors as central to its post-recovery growth strategy.

The Finance Minister emphasised that the government will continue to pursue prudent fiscal and monetary policies to entrench macroeconomic gains and position Ghana as a resilient and competitive economy in the region.

The Fitch upgrade is widely seen as a boost to Ghana’s international credibility and may ease the country’s access to capital markets soon. However, analysts caution that sustained reforms, especially in domestic revenue mobilisation and public financial management, will be crucial to maintaining investor confidence and improving the country’s credit outlook further.

Dr Forson concluded his post with a message of hope and determination: “This is not just about numbers. It is about restoring dignity, opportunity, and hope to every Ghanaian. We are on course, and together, we will make it.”

It’s unfortunate even Akufo-Addo hasn’t seen Ocquaye Committee report – Gabby

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko is a prominent figure of the NPP Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko is a prominent figure of the NPP

A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has criticised the leadership of the party for failing to provide a copy of the Prof Mike Oquaye Committee report to the former President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo.

Describing the development as ‘unfortunate,’ Otchere-Darko expressed his disbelief that the report, which details the factors that led to the party’s abysmal loss during the 2024 elections, hasn’t been made available for the party’s former leader to have a read.

According to him, he cannot fathom how the report, which he says has been seen and parts of it quoted by some of the leaders, including the party’s General Secretary and the 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, hasn’t been given to the key person of the party under whose governance they lost.

“No, I haven’t [seen the report] and I remember asking Akufo-Addo what is in the report. Even he hasn’t seen it, which I think is quite unfortunate. They haven’t had the decency, I must say, to give him a copy.

“The former president (sic) hasn’t seen it and I think that’s quite unfortunate because I’ve heard it being quoted. I’ve heard of the General Secretary quoting it, even the, the flag bearer for 2024 who rightly so must have a copy is also quoting from it, but the former president has not seen the copy. They don’t think it’s important to give him a copy, and he won’t ask for it. If you feel he deserves it, he will take it,” he said while speaking on Asaase Radio on June 16, 2025.

Asked about his expectations of the report, Otchere-Darko said that even though he hasn’t seen it, he hopes that the report will address the role of the chairman of the committee himself, Prof Mike Oquaye, buttressing his point with how an attempt by the former government to appoint him as the Speaker of Parliament for a second consecutive term failed woefully.

He further went on to attribute that failed attempt to the party’s challenges, which he believes greatly affected the party’s parliamentary representation and hindered decisions being taken to help the then government.

“I haven’t seen the Oquaye report, but I think that the Oquaye report, I hope, starts with Professor Oquaye. You remember the NPP wanted to repeat Professor Oquaye as a Speaker and that didn’t fly. That’s where the NPP’s problems began so, I hope that your Oquaye report takes that into consideration,” he advised.

“Look at all the things that the government couldn’t pass and I hope that the Minority Leader now will find a way to articulate those things. Maybe call him here so that people understand the challenges that the government faced,” he added.

Dr Omane Boamah shades NPP over recent Fitch upgrade of Ghana’s economy

0

Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah

The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its failure to stabilise the economy, despite the establishment of the Economic Management Team to address Ghana’s economic challenges.

He accused the NPP of reckless expenditures and the misuse of the country’s resources during its tenure in office.

In a Facebook post sighted by GhanaWeb, following the upgrade of Ghana’s Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) from Restricted Default to ‘B-’ with a Stable Outlook, Dr Boamah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resetting the economy.

“We told you the NPP was wasting your precious time and material resources with unnecessary talk and needless expenditures. We told you the NPP is incompetent! Fitch, a reputable rating agency, has upgraded Ghana’s economy from JUNK under the ‘What A Solid Team’ to ‘B-’ with a promising outlook under the John Dramani Mahama-led NDC government. We’re #ResettingGhana #BuildingGhanaTogether #ActivateAllBodyCameras,” his post read.

On Monday, June 16, 2025, Fitch Ratings, an international rating agency, upgraded Ghana’s Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) from Restricted Default to ‘B-’ with a Stable Outlook.

This upgrade follows Ghana’s ongoing efforts in fiscal consolidation and significant progress in restructuring its external debt.

A key aspect of this progress is the successful reorganisation of $13.1 billion in Eurobond liabilities, along with near-finalised negotiations with remaining external creditors.

Fitch stated that Ghana has re-established formal engagement with most commercial creditors and remains on track to complete its full debt restructuring process by the end of 2025.

Sudan in danger of self-destructing as conflict and famine reign

0

Sudan’s war is in strategic stalemate. Each side stakes its hopes on a new offensive, a new delivery of weapons, a new political alliance, but neither can gain a decisive advantage.

The losers are the Sudanese people. Every month there are more who are hungry, displaced, despairing.

The Sudan armed forces triumphantly announced the recapture of central Khartoum in March.

It broadcast pictures of its leader, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, walking through the ruins of the capital’s Republican Palace, which had been controlled by the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), since the earliest days of the war in April 2023.

The army deployed weapons newly acquired from Egypt, Turkey and other Middle Eastern countries including Qatar and Iran. But its offensive quickly stalled.

The RSF, headed by Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as “Hemedti”, responded with a devastating drone attack on Port Sudan, which is both the interim capital of the military government and also the main entry point for humanitarian aid.

These were long-range sophisticated drones, which the army accuses the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of supplying – a charge the UAE rejects, along with well-documented reports that it has been backing the RSF during the 27-month conflict.

The RSF has also expanded operations to the south of Khartoum.

Hemedti struck a deal with Abdel Aziz al-Hilu, the veteran rebel commander of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-North, which controls the Nuba Mountains near the border with South Sudan.

Their forces combined may be able to make a push to the border with Ethiopia, hoping to open new supply routes.

Meanwhile, the RSF has been besieging the capital of North Darfur, el-Fasher, which is defended by a coalition of Darfurian former rebels, known as the Joint Forces, allied with the army.

Most of the fighters are ethnic Zaghawa, who have been in fierce conflict with the Arab groups that form the core of the RSF.

Month after month of blockade, bombardment and ground attacks have created famine among the residents, with the people of the displaced camp of Zamzam worst-hit.

The RSF and its allied Arab militias have a terrifying record of massacre, rape and ethnic cleansing. Human rights organisations have accused it of genocide against the Massalit people of West Darfur.

Zaghawa communities in el-Fasher fear that if the Joint Forces are defeated, they will suffer savage reprisals at the hands of the RSF.

The pressure on el-Fasher is growing. Last week the RSF captured desert garrisons on the border with Libya held by the Joint Forces.

The military has accused forces loyal to Libyan strongman Gen Khalifa Haftar, who controls the east of the country and is also a reported beneficiary of Emirati support, of joining in the attack.

Sudan’s civilians, who six years ago managed the extraordinary feat of overthrowing the country’s long-time leader Omar al-Bashir through non-violent protests, are in disarray.

Different groupings are aligned with Burhan, with Hemedti, or trying to stake out a neutral position. They are all active on social media, polarised, acrimonious and fragmented.

The neighbourhood committees that were the driving force of the civic revolution are clinging to life.

Most have kept their political heads down, focusing instead on essential humanitarian activities. Known as “Emergency Response Rooms”, aid workers recognise that they are the most efficient channel for life-saving assistance.

But many lost their funding when the administration of US President Donald Trump closed down USAID, and other donors have not stepped into the breach.

The army and RSF both see any form of civic activism as a threat.

They are cracking down, arresting, torturing and killing national aid workers and human rights activists.

There is no credible peace process.

The UN’s chief diplomat assigned to Sudan, former Algerian Prime Minister Ramtane Lamamra, formulated a peace plan that was premised on the assumption that the army would achieve a military victory.

All that would be left to negotiate would be the disarmament of the RSF and the reconstruction of the country. That is totally unrealistic.

Burhan has a big diplomatic advantage over Hemedti because the UN has recognised the military side as the government of Sudan, even when it did not control the national capital.

Hemedti’s attempt to launch a parallel administration for the vast territories controlled by the RSF has gained little credibility.

Secretary David Lammy, failed to agree a path to peace. The conference chairs had to settle for a statement that covered familiar ground.

On this occasion, as before, progress was blocked because Saudi Arabia and the UAE could not agree.

Diplomats acknowledge that Sudan’s war is an African problem that needs an Arab solution.

The road to peace in Khartoum runs through Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Cairo.

For Egypt, the big question is whether Burhan is able to distance himself from Sudan’s Islamists.

Under Bashir, the Islamist movement was in power for 30 years, and established a formidable and well-funded organisation, that still exists.

The Islamists mobilised combat brigades that were key to the army’s recent victory in Khartoum.

Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi supports Burhan and wants him to sideline the Islamists, but knows that he cannot push the Sudanese general too far.

This question takes on added salience with Israel’s attack on Iran and the Islamists’ fear that they are facing an irreversible defeat.

The other big question is whether the UAE will step back from supporting Hemedti.

After the RSF lost Khartoum, some hoped that Abu Dhabi might seek a compromise – but within weeks the RSF was deploying drones that appear to have come from the UAE.

The UAE is also facing strategic challenges, as it is an outlier in the Arab world in its alignment with Israel.

No-one wants to see Sudan divided. But the reality of the war points towards a de facto partition between bitterly opposed warring camps.

Meanwhile, the world’s largest and deepest humanitarian emergency worsens with no end in sight.

More than half of Sudan’s 45 million people are displaced. Nearly a million are in famine.

Both sides continue to restrict aid agencies’ access to the starving. The UN’s appeal for $4.2bn (£3bn) for essential aid was only 13.3% funded in late May.

Globally and among the Arab world’s powerbrokers, Sudan is no-one’s priority, an orphan in a region that is ablaze.

It is a country where the multilateral organisations – the United Nations and the African Union – could still be relevant.

They can remind all of their commitments to human rights and human life, and that it is in no-one’s interest to see Sudan’s catastrophe continue to unfold.

The long-suffering Sudanese people surely deserve that quantum of mercy.

FESTAC Africa 2025 Launched –

0

Maame Efua Houadjeto, GTA boss

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in collaboration with the FESTAC Africa Secretariat has launched the 2025 edition of FESTAC Africa, in Accra.

FESTAC Africa aims to celebrate African heritage and foster connections across the continent, and seeks to position Ghana as a cultural tourism hub as well as a beacon of Pan-African unity.

The week-long celebration from September 21 to 27, 2025 would be on the theme, “Reimagining the African Renaissance”- (Harnessing health, culture, trade, climate change, gender equity, and tourism for sustainable economic growth).

Chairman of FESTAC Africa, Mr. Yinka Abioye, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming festival, which is set to span seven days, with the possibility of extending due to pre-events. He noted that September was recognised as Tourism Month globally, coinciding with the United Nations’ tourism week and the celebration of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday.

He said the festival would showcase the continent’s rich cultural heritage through various performances, and called on Ghanaians to actively participate and showcase their culture, inviting regional and continental performances, with Kenya already confirmed to present plays.

Mr. Abioye said some activities lined up for the festival include cultural performances, conferences, exhibitions, movie screenings, sports, health walk and screening, as well as durbar of chiefs and tree planting.

He added that the festival also anticipated over 100,000 visitors and delegates, with over 1,000 cross border road carnival from Nigeria through Benin and Togo to Ghana, and with strong support from the African Union.

“Some places to host these events are the Accra Sports Stadium, the National Theatre, the Accra International Conference Centre, the Nationalism Park, the Geese Park, the Arts Gallery, among others,” he added.

Chief Executive Officer of GTA, Mrs. Maame Efua Houadjeto, expressed the Authority’s delight in supporting the festival, and highlighted the common threads as well as trends of African fashion, characterised by colourful clothing and beads that united the continent from north to south.

The event marks a significant milestone for tourism, the creative sectors, and the broader narrative of African development, she said, and appealed to the FESTAC Secretariat to organise a master class for local artists as part of the programme for the event, leveraging the presence of art dignitaries.

She said understanding and embracing one’s identity was a vital aspect of tourism, expressing her excitement about the inclusion of domestic tourism in the festival, and encouraged attendees to explore Ghana’s natural beauty, cultural and tourist sites, diverse people, languages, and culinary delights.

Fuel Prices To Go Up – IES Predicts

0

Nana Amoasi VII

Fuel prices are expected to go up in the coming weeks following escalating tensions in the Middle East Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has warned.

His caution follows renewed conflict between Iran and Israel, developments that continue to shake international oil markets, despite the country enjoying stables fuel prices.

Nana Amoasi VII said that despite external pressures, Ghanaians should not expect an immediate increase in domestic fuel prices.

“I am sure within the next two weeks. Currently, we do not expect to see any price increases on the domestic market, as the prices determined over the last two weeks remain in effect today,” he said during an interview.

He added that there could even be a marginal drop in local fuel prices in the coming days. However, he warned that this may be temporary.

“We are going to experience some stability or some drop in fuel prices from today going forward. However, because prices have started skyrocketing on the global market, means that we must get ready for a possible hike in the next two weeks.

“For how long this will stay and how we can manage, we have little to do to change the narrative out there. So, we can only pray that God will intervene,” he said.

Despite the potential risks, he expressed cautious optimism, noting: “Prices may drop if negotiations between the two parties are enhanced.”

Meanwhile, the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has indicated that recent developments in the region are unlikely to affect local pump prices immediately.

COMAC CEO, Dr. Riverson Oppong, explained that the delay is due to the time it takes for global price shifts to reflect in domestic pricing.

“Despite fuel prices going up over the weekend because of the Iranian-Israeli war, you realize that our forecast does not in any way capture those movements. This is the reason why I say that when fuel prices are going up, we do not see the effect immediately on pump prices in this country,” Dr. Oppong said.

He added that the same applies when prices fall.

“It is the same thing when it is going down—we should not expect fuel prices to hit our prices immediately because it takes time for the landing prices to be changed.

“For this week, we are going to have cool prices at the pump level because we are going to sell old stocks or people who have locked in products and paid for it already or may have signed some commercial agreement,” he added.

Obrafour clashes with Possigee over songwriting credit on Sarkodie’s ‘Hope’

0

Ghanaian sound engineer Possigee and hiplife legend Obrafour have recently been involved in a social media back-and-forth regarding who wrote Obrafour’s verse on Sarkodie’s ‘Hope’.

The disagreement started after Possigee shared a video where he talked about the music industry and how some artistes don’t appreciate it when other people write songs for them.

In his opinion, it’s not a bad thing for artistes to allow others to write for them at some point in their career.

While explaining his point, Possigee mentioned that Sarkodie wrote verses for other artistes, citing the example of ‘Baby’ by Sarkodie featuring Mugeez.

He then said that Sarkodie also wrote a part of Obrafour’s verse for the song ‘Hope’

“Hope, Sarkodie featuring Obrafour, ebi Sarkodie wey he write am wey he make Obrafour sing am, Wey Obrafour join ein own,” Possigee said in a mixture of English and Pidjin.

This didn’t sit well with Obrafour, who responded in the comment section of the post, denying the claim that Sarkodie wrote a hook for him.

“What kind of lie is this? Can you tell me which of my songs any ghost writer wrote for me or Sark? Please don’t involve me in any of your clout chasing nonsense.

Respect yourself and lemme be in my corner,” Obrafour replied.

In response, Possigee defended himself, saying he was the one who recorded the song and knows exactly how the whole process happened.

He also stated that he has never been someone who seeks attention or clout.

“Obrafour I am talking about Hope, Sarkodie ft you.. i recorded Sarkodie and the choir and as you know I have never been a clout chaser,” Possigee replied.

Obrafour, still unhappy with the claim, further asked Possigee to stop spreading false information and get his facts right before speaking.

“PossiGee, who said Sark wrote my hook? Get your facts right pls. Call him and ask and don’t be misinforming,” Obrafour added.

Hearts of Oak set up recruitment committee ahead of 2025/26 season

0

Accra Hearts of Oak have taken a major step toward strengthening their squad ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana football season by announcing the formation of a Recruitment Committee.

This initiative, revealed in a club statement on June 17, 2025, is aimed at building a competitive team capable of matching the club’s long-term ambitions.

The newly established committee comprises members from the club’s Board, Management, and Technical Team, and is tasked with assessing current squad performances while identifying and pursuing potential new recruits.

The committee’s approach is heavily rooted in data analytics, as Hearts seek to address key areas that require reinforcement based on statistical evaluation and tactical needs.

According to the statement, priority will be given to players with proven experience in top-flight football, particularly those who align with the technical team’s tactical philosophy. Already, discussions are ongoing with clubs regarding some of the shortlisted targets, with progress said to be encouraging.

In parallel, the club is also reviewing the roles of existing players to ensure their alignment with the club’s strategic goals. Players who are deemed surplus to requirements will be let go, as Hearts aim to maintain a lean and effective squad heading into the new campaign.

“We are dedicated to building a competitive team that supports the club’s ambitions,” the statement read. “The Phobia family and fans can expect regular updates on our progress during the transfer window.”

Training is scheduled to resume on Friday, June 20, as the club intensifies preparations for the new season, which includes participation in the 2025 President’s Cup clash against rivals Asante Kotoko on July 6.

We give out free tickets to fill auditoriums – Lekzy DeComic admits

Lekzy DeComic admits giving out free tickets to fill up auditoriums Lekzy DeComic admits giving out free tickets to fill up auditoriums

Ghanaian comedian Lekzy DeComic has revealed that he sometimes gives out complimentary tickets to fill up seats at his shows when ticket sales fall short.

In an interview on Joy FM, Lekzy admitted that there are times when distributing free tickets becomes necessary, particularly when an investor is involved or when the event is being recorded for television or other commercial purposes.

According to him, ensuring a full house in such situations helps maintain the show’s atmosphere and professional image.

“Yes, it has happened before because whoever is investing in the event, or probably if you are shooting it for TV or for some other commercial reasons, can’t shoot an event in an empty or half-empty auditorium. You still have to fill it up,” Lekzy DeComic stated.

He cited his recent show at the Bukom Arena as an example, revealing that just two days before the event, ticket sales were underwhelming.

As a result, he said he had to distribute additional complimentary tickets to avoid having empty seats in the venue.

“Like the show we did at Bukom Arena like this, two days to the event when we checked the ticket sales, it wasn’t anything encouraging. So, we had to find a way to give some of the tickets out. People bought tickets but it wasn’t as much as we expected. So, sometimes we need to give out some free tickets,” he said.

Lekzy also noted that during media rounds to promote his shows, media houses, along with their audiences, often expect him to give out free tickets.

He explained that these expectations add up to reducing the number of tickets that could have been sold.

“If I’m running interviews, if I’m doing about 10 TV stations and maybe 5-10 FM stations interviews, if I go everywhere, callers will expect me to give free tickets, production will need tickets. So, just the interviews alone probably would take about 50 tickets. You know, these are seats probably I could have probably sold, but if the media house is also to quantify the airtime they are giving me, maybe it will also cost me,” he said.

He added that complimentary tickets are sometimes given to friends, family, and even old acquaintances who reach out for favours.

“I’m just trying to say that with complimentary tickets, a lot of things go into it. Like, you’re giving media houses some, you’re giving friends and family some. Somebody who has fetched you water when you were in secondary school would want you to give him a ticket because now you’re a star,” he added.

Nii Ayi-Bonte II calls on President Mahama to release British colonial-acquired Ga lands

Nii Ayi-Bonte II (1st on drum from left) drumming to lift the ban on noise making Nii Ayi-Bonte II (1st on drum from left) drumming to lift the ban on noise making

The Paramount Chief of the Gbese Traditional Area, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, has issued a passionate plea to President John Dramani Mahama, urging the government to return vast tracts of Ga lands originally acquired by the British colonial administration.

He asserts that these lands rightfully belong to the Ga State.

According to a report by the ghanaiantimes.com.gh on June 16, 2025, the Paramount Chief made the call during the climax of the event to lift the ban on drumming and dancing on June 12, 2025, in Accra.

Addressing attendees at the ‘Odadao’ ritual at the event, Nii Ayi-Bonte II highlighted the profound impact of the historical land seizures.

He argued that the restoration of these ancestral territories is crucial for ‘building a new economy for the people of Accra.’

Furthermore, the Chief reminded President Mahama of his 2024 election campaign promise to return all state-acquired lands to their legitimate owners, framing the current appeal as an opportunity to honour that commitment.

“The acquisition of our lands by the Colonial Administration as far back as 1875 has impoverished us,” he lamented.

Also, he said that the lands for other economic activities such as farming have been lost.

“All our lands for other economic activities such as farming have been lost to us. Today, people are disposing off our lands with careless abandonment, and when they are confronted, all you hear is ‘government land…government land’,” he decried.

His remarks underscore the ongoing frustration and perceived injustice faced by the Ga people regarding their land rights.

Chamber of Mines expects modest gold output rise

0

The Chamber of Mines’ new leadership says it remains cautiously optimistic about a rebound in gold production by end-2025, despite ongoing mine closures and operational challenges that continue to weigh on output across the sector.

The chamber, in its outlook for 2025, projected gold output to range between 4.4 and 5.1 million ounces (oz) after recording a broad-based and notable increase in the production of its traditional minerals for 2024.

Gold output rose from 4.0 million oz in 2023 to a historic high of 4.8 million oz, representing year-on-year growth of 19.3 percent. This upturn was credited to a significant increase in the attributable output of small-scale gold miners, which offset the near stagnation in production from large-scale gold producers.

“However, anticipated declines in output from Perseus’ Edikan Mine, Gold Fields’ Damang and Tarkwa Mines and Zijin’s Akyem Mine are expected to temper the overall gains in total production,” it earlier stated.

Speaking further on this, the chamber’s newly appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO), Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah, stated that projections are conservative – considering the difficulties facing some of its member companies.

He added that Future Global Resources’ (FGR) Bogoso Mine has also halted operations, while Bibiani and ADAMUS are facing processing challenges that require new plants.

“That’s why we are very conservative with our projections,” Nantogmah told reporters at a press conference alongside the chamber’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr Kenneth Ashigbey.

Still, he said, there is room for hope. “If ADAMUS and Bibiani get their plants running, and Shandong’s Namdini Mine ramps up as planned, the picture could change,” he noted, pointing also to the recent takeover of Newmont’s Akyem Mine by Zijin Golden Resources as another potential boost for production.

This, he indicated, could help gold output exceed the projected 5.1 million ounces if hurdles are addressed.

On the delayed ratification of Barari DV’s lithium agreement by the state, the chamber’s COO said he will work closely with the new CEO to continue engaging government.

“As a country, we are losing – because at the point that they wanted the lease ratified, lithium carbonate was around US$3,000 but now the price is about US$600,” he said, adding that the company had planned to invest about US$100million but now wants to raise it to US$300million.

Given these emerging developments, he said the current leadership will work assiduously with support from the chamber’s Executive Council to expedite the agreement’s ratification.

He disclosed that the chamber is aware of some efforts by government to also see a successful conclusion of the pending arrangements.

Also commenting on the issue, Dr Ashigbey said the chamber will continue to engage and deploy advocacy with policymakers, regulators and various players for the country’s benefit as well as chamber member companies.

It will be recalled that the Chamber of Mines recently named engineer Kenneth Ashigbey and industry strategist Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah its new CEO and COO, effective June 1.

The appointment signals a strategic shift for the chamber, which represents the interests of mineral producers in Africa’s largest gold producer.

Dr Ashigbey’s selection is seen as a bid to deepen the industry’s engagement with policymakers and communities while positioning the domestic mining sector for long-term sustainability.

Kevin-Prince Boateng and Luis Suarez were teammates at Barcelona in 2019 Kevin-Prince Boateng and Luis Suarez were teammates at Barcelona in 2019

Former Ghanaian attacker, Kevin-Prince Boateng, has disclosed that he had an acrimonious relationship with Uruguayan striker, Luis Suarez, when he joined Spanish giants FC Barcelona in January 2019.

He explained that he was signed to support Suarez, who was struggling with injuries at the time in the striking position.

However, the Uruguayan striker did not talk to him for a month while they were in camp training, which surprised him a lot.

“I trained really well because you can only train well with these players. So, they said, ‘okay, you can play.’ But this guy never came around, and we didn’t have a good relationship. For the first month, he didn’t even say hello to me. It sounds weird, but that’s just how it was,” he said while speaking on the Vibe with the Five podcast *(PLEASE INSERT DATE)*.

He further revealed that his performances during training sessions impressed the coaching staff led by Ernesto Valverde at the time and wanted to give him playing time.

However, according to the former Black Stars forward, Suarez refused to be substituted by him even when he had sustained an injury and was limping in the game.

“He had some knee problems, so they didn’t know if he could play every game. Whenever he wasn’t ready, I was supposed to play, but it didn’t work out. At that time, I think he didn’t want to come off the pitch ever. He didn’t want to come off.

“He wasn’t playing well. This is Barcelona, and you’re Luis Suarez – one of the best strikers in the world in the last 20 years. You have to be honest. He wasn’t playing well, he was limping, but he didn’t come off. I was sitting on the bench, but he wouldn’t budge. He would continue to play,” he added.

A scene during the customer engagement activity

In an effort to raise awareness about the harmful impact of plastic waste on the environment, the Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana (Shell Licensee), Christian Li, has encouraged customers to adopt more sustainable habits in their daily lives.

This call to action was made during a customer engagement activity at the Airport Shell service station in Accra, held in commemoration of World Environment Day.

During the event, Mr. Li, together with employees of Vivo Energy Ghana, distributed branded eco-friendly reusable glass bottles to customers.

The initiative aimed to encourage the reduction of single-use plastics and highlight the importance of making environmentally responsible choices.

Speaking directly to customers at the forecourt, Mr. Li said, “Our purpose here today is together – with you to make a conscious decision to reduce the plastic use, starting with this reusable bottle.

“Let it be a symbol of our commitment to protecting our environment. Together, through small daily actions, we can create a lasting impact and build a cleaner, greener Ghana for future generations.”

This initiative formed part of Vivo Energy Ghana’s broader environmental campaign, which seeks to educate the public on the dangers of plastic pollution and promote simple, practical solutions that individuals can adopt. The reusable bottles, distributed freely to valued customers, served as a reminder of the importance of reducing plastic waste.

Mr. Li also highlighted the urgency of addressing environmental degradation, noting that plastic pollution is a growing issue. He emphasised that collective effort is essential in reversing the damage already done and protecting the country’s natural resources for future generations.

Employees of Vivo Energy Ghana who participated in the exercise also took time to interact with customers, sharing tips on sustainable living and encouraging them to adopt environmentally friendly habits such as recycling, reusing containers, and avoiding single-use plastics where possible.

The activity was well received by customers, many of whom praised Vivo Energy Ghana for its leadership in environmental advocacy and its practical approach to sustainability.

This year’s World Environment Day was celebrated globally under the theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” a call that aligns closely with Vivo Energy’s sustainability agenda.

The reusable bottle distribution is one of several initiatives Vivo Energy Ghana has launched in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and Goal 13: Climate Action.

Passion For Press Conferences – DailyGuide Network

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, is a man on a mission.

His media trial of suspects in high political cases is a worrying novelty which must be curbed in the interest of justice administration.

His decision to announce cases on his desk with a clear intention of information only is not in breach of the constitution as observed by one learned gentleman. We could not agree more with this position.

When however, the press conference template is intended to declare the suspects guilty even before they appear before the court, the exercise casts him in bad light, something which is not commensurate with this respectable standing in the legal fraternity.

Partisanship, when it clashes with professionalism as in the manner we are seeing the learned man under review, spoils the broth badly.

We do not think that the learned gentleman would want to leave a legacy of negative memories about his stewardship. Unless he however changes courses, he might go that way unfortunately.

We wish the Attorney General could restrict such engagements with the media to information only activities, but with a clear mission to do the bidding of his political party, we would see multitude of such press conferences.

As observed in a preceding paragraph, the intention is to declare some persons guilty even before substantive evidence is gathered for the prosecution.

We are for the proper application of the law when suspects are eventually found guilty. Until that is done and properly so, the declaration of such persons guilty in the media does not help the cause of justice administration.

We recall the days of the previous Attorney General who hardly went on this tangent.

Now that Dr. Dominic Ayine, a renowned legal luminary is on the seat, we are noticing unusual approaches which show how deep he has become embroiled in the efforts to give his political adversaries bad names and hang them.

What happens when in the end those he has decided to smear with charges in the media are declared free of the charges levelled against them?

Only time will tell what would happen in the end. It is regrettable that when such suspects end up free of the charges levelled against them, nothing would happen by way of restoring their lost dignity.

His encounter with A Plus has left an unsavoury taste in the palates of many who followed the developments. To date, many have the thought of that encounter playing out in their memories when they see the Attorney General addressing the media.

In the latest press conference on the National Service brouhaha, he mentioned some vendors as complicit in the scandal but withheld others for reasons best known to him.

We would have rather all those suspected to have conducted themselves scandalously are mentioned and taken through due process. This would be better than a selective presentation as witnessed during the latest press conference series.

When is the next episode due? Perhaps soon.

Defence minister shades NPP over recent Fitch upgrade of Ghana’s economy

Ankara-Inspired Kaba and Slit Outfits for Ladies

0

The Kaba and slit outfit is a timeless symbol of African femininity and cultural pride. Rooted in Ghanaian tradition, this classic style has evolved over the years, and with the infusion of bold Ankara prints, it has become a must-have for the modern woman who wants to blend heritage with trend.

1. Structured Kaba Blouses:

Ankara-inspired Kaba blouses today come in a variety of styles—from puff sleeves and off-shoulder cuts to peplum and corset shapes. These designs not only flatter the female form but also add a fashionable twist to a traditional piece. When paired with a matching slit skirt, the result is both regal and contemporary.

2. Front Slit Skirts:

The slit in this outfit often runs in the front or at the side, offering ease of movement and a subtle hint of allure. You can opt for a straight-cut or fish-tail skirt depending on your preference. High-waist designs also help to accentuate the waistline, giving a polished and feminine look.

3. Embellishments and Layering:

Modern Kaba and slit styles often feature embellishments like beads, sequins, lace overlays, or even tulle additions for an extra layer of glam. These details make the outfit ideal for weddings, engagements, church, or festive gatherings.

4. Versatility in Styling:

This outfit can be styled with a matching headwrap (duku), clutch bag, and heels for a full traditional look. For a more relaxed vibe, pair the top with plain trousers or jeans to wear separately.

Ankara-inspired Kaba and slit outfits beautifully showcase African elegance while embracing modern fashion trends. They are perfect for women who want to feel confident, connected to culture, and stylish at the same time.

Ama K. Abebrese Slams TV Stations For Airing Films Without Permission

0

Actress and filmmaker, Ama K. Abebrese, has spoken out strongly against the illegal showing of Ghanaian movies by local TV stations, saying it is destroying the country’s ailing movie industry.

Speaking on UTV’s United , Ama K revealed how her film, The Burial of Kojo, was aired on TV without permission just a month after it premiered on Netflix in 2019.

“We struggled to make that movie. We didn’t have money, so we raised funds through Kickstarter. Then a TV station showed it without asking us,” she said. “When I called to complain, the person acted like they didn’t know anything. Then they blocked my number.”

Ama K also shared how this problem has been going on for years. Back when she worked at Viasat 1, her team paid for the rights to show movies like Harry Potter, but other stations would still show them illegally.

“This has been happening since 2012. Nothing has been done. Some people think they can do anything because they know people in power,” she said. She added that the arts in Ghana are not taken seriously, especially by those in charge.

“In Ghana, the arts are seen as just entertainment. But this is our work, our lives,” she said.

Ama K warned that if piracy continues and laws are not enforced, the film industry will keep suffering.

“People say the Ghana movie industry is dead. But it’s not just because of lack of support — it’s also because of piracy. We’re killing our own industry. We are our own worst enemies,” she said.

Public, Private Sectors Unite At World Refugee Economic Summit

Panellists deliberating on possible solutions needed to address challenges faced by refugees at the summit

In commemoration of World Refugee Day, stakeholders across government, humanitarian, private sector, and faith-based institutions convened in Accra for the World Refugee Economic Summit (WRES) organised under the theme: ‘Leveraging Community as a Superpower to Build Sustainable Livelihood Opportunities for Refugee Youth’.

The summit served as a platform for advancing policy and practice aimed at fostering refugee inclusion, self-sufficiency, and economic empowerment, with a specific focus on refugee youth.

Organized by a coalition comprising the Mastercard Foundation, Ghana Refugee Board (GRB), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Amahoro Coalition, Christian Council of Ghana, World University Service of Canada (WUSC), and WUSC’s DREEM Youth Advisory Committee (YAE), the summit drew participation from policymakers, civil society leaders, private sector actors, and refugee youth representatives.

According to the United Nations, over 43.3 million refugees were under UNHCR’s mandate as of mid-2024, a figure reflecting the global urgency of sustainable and inclusive responses to forced displacement. In Ghana, approximately 15,000 refugees and asylum seekers are currently hosted across camps and urban centers, with increasing calls for livelihood interventions and socio-economic integration.

Delivering the welcome address, Country Director for WUSC Ghana, Appiah Wiafe Adofo, highlighted the imperative of integrating refugees into national development frameworks. “We cannot talk about sustainable development without intentionally including refugees. Today, we are not just creating conversations—we are co-creating solutions with the very people who are living through displacement,” she said. “This summit reflects our belief that refugee youth are not merely beneficiaries; they are builders of their own futures and contributors to national progress.”

A key highlight of the summit was a panel session that brought together representatives from government institutions, humanitarian bodies, and the private sector. The session explored systemic barriers faced by refugees in Ghana and examined practical strategies to address them.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Refugee Board (GRB), Tetteh Padi, disclosed that official identification cards will be issued to eligible refugees to facilitate access to financial services and formal employment.

“The National Identification Authority law specifies that foreigners who are residents in the country for more than three months must be issued with a non-citizen identity card,” Mr. Padi explained. This move aims to regularise the status of thousands of displaced persons and unlock critical pathways to socio-economic inclusion.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), represented by Chief Superintendent Francis Ayebie, reaffirmed its collaboration with GRB to streamline access to legal documents for refugees.

“The GIS has maintained close partnership with the GRB to ensure refugees can access necessary documents for accommodation in Ghana,” Mr. Ayebie noted.

Personal testimonies from refugee youth added urgency and authenticity to the discussions. Trust Ngulefac Tamonkla, a Cameroonian refugee residing in Ghana for six years, described the challenges in securing work permits and job opportunities.

He called for more consistent efforts to improve refugee living conditions and eliminate administrative bottlenecks.

Delivering a solidarity message, Mercy Kusiwaa Frimpong of the Amahoro Coalition reported that over 33,000 job pledges had been secured from private sector partners for refugees across Africa during the recent Africa Forum on Displacement held in Nairobi.

“We are proving that refugees are not burdens. They are doctors, coders, agripreneurs, teachers, and technicians who fled conflict, not their skills,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of the Mastercard Foundation, Country Director, Rica Regan, highlighted the organization’s commitment to equipping displaced youth with the skills and tools needed for entrepreneurship and employment.

“At Mastercard Foundation, we believe that by equipping refugee youth with tools for entrepreneurship and employment, we lay the foundation for long-term growth and peace,” she said.

A Daily Guide Report

IEA urges govt to suspend Tullow Oil licence extension

0

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has called on the Government of Ghana to immediately halt the ongoing process to extend the petroleum licences of Tullow Oil and its partners beyond the original expiration date of 2036.

The move follows confirmation of a Memorandum of Understanding between the government and the oil firm that would push the licences’ validity to 2040.

In a statement issued Monday, June 16, 2025, the policy think tank described the move as inconsistent with Ghana’s commitments to reform extractive sector governance.

The IEA is urging the government to use the remaining years under the existing agreement to reset the fiscal and legal structure governing upstream oil production in line with global best practices.

“The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has followed with keen interest recent reports that the Government of Ghana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to extend the Petroleum Licenses of Tullow Oil and its Partners until 2040. The IEA considers this decision to lack good faith, transparency, probity, and accountability, and to be starkly at odds with the Government’s own commitment to reset and strengthen governance of the extractive sector,” part of the statement read.

The IEA’s position comes against the backdrop of long-running tax and arbitration disputes between Ghana and Tullow. Among the contentious issues is a USD 320 million Branch Profit Remittance Tax assessed by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), which Tullow successfully challenged at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in London.

The tribunal not only ruled in Tullow’s favour but also ordered Ghana to cover legal and administrative costs, with accrued interest.

“It is a matter of public record that Tullow’s operational relationship with Ghana has been riddled with challenges, including a series of high-profile international arbitration disputes that casts a shadow of doubt over the existing Petroleum Agreement

“A notable instance occurred when the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) assessed a Branch Profit Remittance Tax (BPRT) liability of USD 320 million against Tullow for the period 2012–2016, following a thorough audit. Tullow refused to comply and challenged the claim through international arbitration.

“In the ensuing proceedings under the terms of the Petroleum Agreement, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in London ruled in favour of Tullow. The London-based ICC held that Tullow was not liable to pay the USD 320 million tax liability and further directed Ghana to pay substantial legal and arbitration-related costs, including GBP 1,946,589.44, USD 294,228.72, and USD 574,000.00 in tribunal and ICC fees—with interest accruing at 5% per annum until payment is made in full,” the statement detailed.

The think tank also cited another unresolved GRA tax claim of USD 387 million, linked to disallowed interest deductions, which Tullow has again referred to international arbitration.

Arguing that the current concession framework is outdated and skewed against national interest, the IEA recommends a shift toward service contracts similar to those used in countries like Norway and the United Arab Emirates.

Under that model, the state retains ownership of oil resources while private firms operate on a fee basis allowing for stronger public control and improved fiscal outcomes.

The group highlights the disparity between the United Kingdom and Norway’s earnings from similar offshore production volumes as an example of how contractual models and governance structures can drive national revenue performance.

Norway’s approach, which includes a state-led framework, yielded nearly three times more per barrel and helped build a sovereign wealth fund now valued at over USD 1.4 trillion.

“Government must immediately halt efforts to extend the license of Tullow and its partners in the West Cape Three Points and Deepwater Tano Blocks. Instead, the existing colonial-era contract should be thoroughly reviewed and restructured into a service contract akin to those in Norway, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, Oman, and Abu Dhabi—contracts which vest control in the state while leveraging private sector expertise. The current colonial contract will never inure to the benefit of Ghana and its citizens.

“The experiences of the United Kingdom led by the private-sector and Norway by the state, offer valuable lessons. Both began offshore oil exploration in the North Sea Basin in the 1960s and have produced similar volumes of oil—approximately 42.8 billion barrels for the UK and 40 billion barrels for Norway.

“Despite similar geology and identical resource base and production levels, by 2014, the UK earned only USD 11 per barrel, while Norway earned USD 29.8 per barrel—nearly three times as much. Total revenues stood at USD 470 billion for the UK and USD 1.197 trillion for Norway. Norway further invested these proceeds into a sovereign wealth fund—now valued at over USD 1.4 trillion, the largest in the world,” the statement added.

With Tullow’s current licenses still valid for another 11 years, the IEA insists that Ghana is now in a better negotiating position than it was at the time of the original deal and must not rush into extending terms that have already proven costly.

The IEA is urging President John Mahama to use his administration’s reform mandate following the 2024 electoral victory to initiate a comprehensive overhaul of the petroleum sector’s fiscal and governance architecture, including process reforms for negotiating and approving future agreements.

WhatsApp to start showing more adverts in messaging app

0

WhatsApp is launching three new ad features in a global roll-out across the messaging app.

The Meta-owned platform says the new ads will not be shown in the same place as people’s private chats, nor will the contents of their messages – which are encrypted – be used to decide which ads to display.

WhatsApp will instead use the country, city and language of the user, as well as how they interact with other ads and which channels they follow, to drive suggested content.

But people who have chosen to link their WhatsApp account to Facebook or Instagram will see more personalised ads.

The new ad features will appear in a section called Updates, which is a separate tab at the bottom of the app.

WhatsApp claims to have 1.5 billion users globally.

Businesses with channels will be able to choose to promote ads in the Updates section to attract new followers, and also charge a subscription to access extra content.

WhatsApp will eventually take a 10% commission of that fee, and there may also be extra costs on top of that taken at the app store level depending on the size of the business.

LatexFoamPromo

Firms will also be able to advertise in the form of a status update, which looks similar to an Instagram story and will link through to start a chat if clicked on.

Social media expert Matt Navarra told the BBC that Meta is “laying the foundation for WhatsApp to finally become a monetisable platform at scale”.

But “monetising the periphery” of WhatsApp, while keeping personal chats private, would not be without risk for the company, he added.

This could particularly be the case in markets like the UK and Europe, he said, where the app is viewed primarily as a messaging tool with less appetite for content feeds or adverts.

“Any perception that the app is becoming noisy or Facebook-ified will spark backlash,” he said.

‘Natural extension’

It’s no coincidence that the new features bring WhatsApp more in line with Meta’s other platforms Facebook and Instagram.

“Obviously there’s overlap,” said WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart.

“We have stories on Instagram and stories on WhatsApp, and we now have a way for businesses to promote themselves in both, and we think that’s a good thing.”

He said he believed the move was a “natural extension of messaging services” and not dissimilar to features of rival apps such as Snapchat and Telegram.

For Mr Navarra, it also reflects a wider shift in the social media landscape.

“The feed is dying, public sharing is down, people are retreating into DMs and Stories in small groups,” he said.

“Meta’s trying to turn WhatsApp into a platform without users realising it and if they move too fast or it starts to feel like another ad network, people might disengage or maybe worse, distrust the app.”

WhatsApp angered users recently with the introduction of a permanent button for Meta’s AI tool, which cannot be deactivated or deleted, and Mr Cathcart said users who did not want to see ads or follow channels would not be forced to.

“I want to stress this won’t affect your inbox,” he said.

“If you’re only using WhatsApp for messaging, you’re not going to see this.”

He said the Update section of the app was “not particularly popular” in the UK but was used more in other parts of the world, and the firm would “look at the feedback” about the unremovable AI tool – but there were many other features of the app which were also permanent.

“You can’t delete the channels button, you can’t delete the Updates button, you can’t delete the calls button,” he said.

“I mean, we also don’t want to have a service that has lots of settings… that’s complexity too.”
