Minority accuses government of stalling reintroduction of anti-LGBTQ bill

0

The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of deliberately blocking the reintroduction of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-LBGTQ bill.

According to the caucus, it has been five weeks since the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, announced that the revised bill was undergoing final fine-tuning to facilitate its passage and implementation. However, the bill has yet to return to the House for consideration.

Raising the issue on the floor of Parliament on Friday, November 21, the lead sponsor of the bill and Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, called for the bill to be reprogrammed on the order paper next week.

“It is five weeks since Mr Speaker gave that ruling, and since then no attempt has been made by this House to have the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill addressed, even as the cancer of LGBTQ continues to devastate our norms and culture and threaten our family values in this country,” he said.

“There seems to be complete silence on this. The House must not create the impression that what was a priority in the Eighth Parliament has suddenly been thrown under the carpet.

“The Speaker declared that it should be on the order paper, but this attempt by the government to block the bill from being featured is a big disappointment to the people of this country. We demand that if it was an oversight or error, it must be corrected, and the bill added to the order paper so that it will be laid and presented for first reading.”

In response, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, rejected the allegation, insisting that the government has no intention of obstructing the bill’s reintroduction.

He assured the House that the Mahama administration remains committed to ensuring the passage of the anti-LGBT bill.

‘We’ve apologised to each other’ – Professor Gyampo, Dr Domfeh smoke peace pipe

Renowned political science lecturer Prof Ransford Gyampo and his colleague, senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr George Domfeh, have announced their reconciliation following their ugly fight on national television.

Dr Domfeh first announced the reconciliation in a post shared on Facebook on Wednesday, November 20, 2025.

He indicated that they decided to bury the hatchet after they both admitted fault in a longer conversation.

“Professor Gyampo acknowledged that he regrets his commentary against my person, which was distasteful and defamatory, especially considering our longstanding collegial relationship. I, in turn, admitted that I went so hard with my comments about his person in response to his position on my commentary; we have sincerely apologised to each other.

“We have mutually agreed to put this episode behind us and move forward with renewed respect for each other. As public intellectuals, we remain committed to engaging in serious national discourse without allowing disagreements to degenerate into personal animosity,” he wrote.

Prof Gyampo responded to Dr Domfeh’s post in less than five minutes, confirming the reconciliation.

He refuted the allegation of defamation made by Domfeh, saying, “You know I didn’t defame or attack anybody, but Dr Domfeh, apology accepted. Please, please, please, let’s let go. He’s still my brother.”

‘More women might come out against you if you go to court’ – Lawyer tells Prof Gyampo

About the incident:

The two lecturers at the University of Ghana came under heavy criticism after a video of them trading insults went viral on social media.

In the video circulating on November 15, 2025, a lecturer at the Political Science Department and CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, is seen in a heated altercation with Dr George Domfeh, also a senior lecturer at UG.

In the less-than-one-minute footage, the two lecturers, who appeared on TV3’s The Key Points show, were seen exchanging insults after their discussion turned personal.

Dr Domfeh, while making his submission, was heard alleging that Prof Gyampo is politically biased, accusing him of being self-centred during his tenure as UG-UTAG president.

“Nobody is more political than Prof Gyampo. Everything about you is political. When you were UTAG president, look at what you did… Shame on you,” he said.

Prof Gyampo, who appeared visibly upset, fired back and accused Dr Domfeh of being unfit as an academic.

“I am political about what?… You are not an academic. Shame on you. What you are doing is shameful,” Gyampo retorted.

Another video circulating on Facebook shows the two lecturers in a near-fistfight, with Dr Domfeh heard making further allegations against Prof Gyampo, including claims about inappropriate conduct with students. These allegations remain unverified and were made during the altercation.

“You are a fool. You are a professor who sleeps with children,” Domfeh alleged.

After the incident, Gyampo, through his lawyers, demanded an apology and retraction over the claim that he was sleeping with underage girls.

Dr Domfeh also claimed that the media house where the incident happened, TV3, colluded with Prof Gyampo to make him look bad.

He alleged that the video of the incident was edited to make him look like an aggressor and not Prof Gyampo.

Patience Akyianu replaces Hans Nilsson as Hubtel Board Chair

0

Ghana’s leading payment service provider, Hubtel, has announced the appointment of Patience Akyianu as its new Board Chair.

She succeeds Hans Nilsson, who steps down after a decade of guiding the company through major governance reforms and growth milestones.

Hans has chaired Hubtel’s Board since 2015, leading the company through a decade of transformation. Under his tenure, committee systems were formalised, governance was aligned with Bank of Ghana guidelines, and supervision was strengthened.

He also oversaw the achievement of a long-term revenue target set in 2015 and guided independent reviews that prepared Hubtel for potential public-market scrutiny. Known for his mentoring style, Hans championed evidence-based debate in the boardroom and helped build confidence in Hubtel’s systems and people.

Patience Akyianu brings extensive leadership experience from the banking and insurance sectors. She has previously served as Managing Director of Barclays Bank Ghana (now Absa) and Chief Financial Officer for Standard Chartered’s Africa regional operations in Johannesburg. She has also served as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Ecobank Ghana.

Since joining Hubtel’s Board in 2021, Patience has contributed to strengthening governance and guidance. Her background in finance, risk, and regulation makes her well-suited to lead the board as Hubtel deepens its role in Ghana’s payments and commerce sector and prepares for selective regional expansion.

“It has been a privilege to serve as Chair of Hubtel,” said Hans Nilsson, outgoing Chair. “The board is strong, the leadership team is ready, and the company is well-positioned for its next chapter. This is the right time for a planned handover. I wish Patience and the board every success

“Serving on this board since 2021 has shown me the strength of the team and the scale of the opportunity,” said Patience Akyianu, incoming Board Chair.

“The priority is clear: maintain trust, make everyday payments simpler for customers and merchants, and raise the bar on governance as Hubtel grows in Ghana and across Africa.”

“Hubtel benefits from leaders who build both systems and people,” said Alex Bram, Chief Executive Officer. “We are grateful to Hans for a decade of steady guidance and proud to welcome Patience as Chair to steer governance, strategy, and disciplined growth.”

The board began succession planning well in advance to ensure a smooth change in leadership. This planned handover supports continuity in strategy and governance, while giving stakeholders confidence that Hubtel’s focus on payment reliability, merchant value, and compliance will remain unchanged.

Patience’s career spans leadership roles with direct responsibility for finance, risk, and operations. Her boardroom experience includes engagement with regulators and exposure to listed-company standards, aligning well with Hubtel’s strategic priorities.

The board’s decision to appoint Patience shows its focus on safeguarding trust, upholding strong guidance, and driving growth with accountability to regulators, merchants, and customers.

Under her leadership, Hubtel will maintain its focus on reliable products, merchant growth, disciplined governance, open communication with regulators and partners, and continued investment in risk systems and data. Over the next 12–24 months, the board will prioritise strengthening payment reliability, merchant acquisition and retention, and exploring selective regional opportunities.

Hubtel is a leading technology company licensed by the Bank of Ghana as an Enhanced Payment Service Provider. The company makes it easy for people to find and pay for everyday essentials from local businesses of all sizes.

Founded in 2005, Hubtel operates 23 offices across Ghana with about 700 employees. Its mission is to drive Africa forward by enabling everyone to find and pay for everyday essentials, with the vision of becoming Africa’s most useful company.

Hubtel’s growth and innovation have been recognised by the Financial Times, which named it Ghana’s fastest-growing company for 2022. Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Forbes Magazine have also featured Hubtel for its role in Africa’s digital economy.

Ugly utterances against the party caused our defeat

Electoral area coordinators in the Assin South Constituency of the Central Region, have said that one of the main causes of the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 election, was the utterances of some party leaders against the party.

Speaking on Thursday, November 20, 2025, during the campaign tour of Dr Bawumia in the constituency, 22 out of 25 electoral area coordinators of the constituency who openly declared their support for Bawumia, said propaganda is being waged against Bawumia as being responsible for the NPP’s defeat, adding, however, that the real reasons for the defeat are known.

“We are not paying attention to the propaganda against him that he caused the defeat of the NPP. We the electoral area coordinators have been asking ourselves that for the number of parliamentary candidates who lost across the country, was it also the cause of Bawumia?,” the group said.

“The real reason for the party’s defeat is known. Some people’s utterances against the party really caused us. Also greed and neglect were some of the reasons, not the propaganda against Bawumia.”

The group reiterated it’s confidence in Dr Bawumia to transform the country as a leader, should he be given the nod.

“We have seen that Dr Bawumia is blessed with the vision to transform our country. So many good things he did when he served as Vice President are today benefiting the country, even under the NDC government.”

‘President Mahama deserves a third term, we will test the law’

Kojo Adu Asare is a leading member of the NDC Kojo Adu Asare is a leading member of the NDC

A leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kojo Adu Asare, has asserted that President John Dramani Mahama should vie for the presidency for a third term.

According to him, the president deserves another term in office because the people of Ghana want him to continue to lead the country because of his good works.

Kojo Adu Asare, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Adentan, who made these remarks in a recent interview on Asempa 94.7 FM, said that the laws of the country, which border on presidential term limits, will be “tested”.

Asked whether Mahama deserves another term in office, the former NDC MP said, “I think so.”

“If Ghanaians want him, why not?” he added when pressed on why he was harbouring such thoughts.

He reiterated, “I’m saying that you talk to the people of Ghana… gauge the mood of the people and the acceptability, approval rating for John Mahama.”

He suggested that President Mahama’s first term in office does not count, saying that he will now be running for his second.

“It is about law and we are going to law… It is about governance, and the people love someone who they think can help develop the nation.”

He asserted that the president’s achievement has shown that he would transform the country if he were given more time.

He added that countries like Singapore have made significant progress in their development process because they had leaders who were in office for longer periods.

President Mahama announces ‘plans’ for 2028 presidential run

Meanwhile, President Mahama, in August 2025, dismissed growing speculation that he may seek another term in 2028, firmly stating that he will not contest in Ghana’s next general elections.

For months, sections of the public and political commentators had suggested that President Mahama could be persuaded to run again.

But the President has now put those rumours to rest, making it clear that he has no intention of returning to the ballot, while on an official visit to Singapore.

Explaining his decision, President Mahama said stepping aside in 2028 would give him the moral authority to prioritise the national interest over electoral considerations.

“I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” he said.

Government to generate US$10billion in annual forex through worker exports

Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum is the Minister of State for Special Initiatives Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum is the Minister of State for Special Initiatives

In an effort to tackle the country’s spiralling youth unemployment and earn foreign exchange, government – through the Ghana Labour Exchange Programme (GLEP) – is aiming to export 800,00 to one million skilled and unskilled labour in three to four years.

Briefing media on the programme in Accra, Minister of State for Special Initiatives, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, said GLEP is projected to generate foreign exchange in excess of US$10billion annually.

“I’m looking at more than US$10billion coming into this country – probably three times the IMF bailout. This is something that can easily be done,” he said.

According to him, this would be a panacea to the debt-laden country that has gone to the IMF for a bailout 17 times since independence – and is currently under a US$3billion IMF bailout programme until 2026.

He stressed that these potential earnings are projected to surpass earnings of the country’s traditional exports like cocoa and gold.

The Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, indicated that gold alone has brought in about US$8billion since the GoldBod was established in March.

This saw total international reserves surge to US$12billion, bringing relative stability to the local currency. The cedi appreciated by 37 percent year-to-date, according to Dr Asiama.

He however pointed to the Philippines, which he said earns about US$135billion annually from its overseas workers; and India, which garnered US$130billion in 2023 to prove the programme’s economic potential.

“Closer to home, Egypt now makes about US$35billion from labour export – more than the Suez Canal. Kenya made US$5.08 billion,” he added.

The programme, which he said is the “vision” of President John Mahama, is designed to reduce domestic unemployment, inject massive forex into the economy and upskill the national workforce.

“We are looking at a holistic approach. Some people think that labour export is brain-drain. But I tell people it is rather a brain-gain,” the minister intimated, pushing back against critics who label such initiatives as “brain drain”.

“You cannot stop it. We live in a global village,” he argued, maintaining that workers who go abroad refine their skills, attitude and mentality. According to the minister, this will benefit the country when they return, confirming that “the likelihood of these workers coming back to Ghana is about 80-90 percent”.

The Ghana Labour Exchange Programme targets both highly skilled professionals and unskilled labourers.

The minister said doctors, nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists and IT experts are in high demand in other countries and can be exported.

He also noted that carpenters, steel-benders, bricklayers and welders capable of working in industries like shipbuilding are also in high demand.

“For the non-skilled, we are looking at people who can go as helpers, labourers, seasonal farm helpers, or even those who can work on a ship with just a basic training of about six weeks,” he explained.

The minister revealed there is immediate demand for workers worldwide, citing aging populations in several western and Asian countries that need active youth to take up jobs. However, he didn’t state explicitly where these workers will be taken.

Parliament adopts report for review of Petroleum Revenue Management Act

He cited continuous demand for Ghanaian workers, stating that “1,000 to 2,000 nurses” are being recruited for specific locations and 654 drivers already recruited for a single country.

Agyekum indicated that plans are far advanced to streamline travelling processes and ensure the workers safety, stating that dedicated desks will be put at various embassies to handle issues and queries and fast-track the acquisition of travelling documents for these workers.

“The safety of our people is the paramount thing. All our embassies are going to have a desk officer,” he said, adding that government is signing memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with host countries to protect the workers’ rights.

The minister emphasised that some training may be provided for people seeking jobs without prior training, adding that the workers will be given initial contract periods ranging from 9 months to 2 years – after which they can return to Ghana or opt for a contract renewal.

However, he expressed his outfit’s commitment to collaborating with other ministries and government agencies in ensuring that the programme achieves its intended purpose of stemming the unemployment canker and securing the livelihoods and welfare of Ghanaians youth while earning foreign exchange for the country.

UG begins internal review after heated on-air clash between Prof Gyampo and Dr Domfeh

0

The University of Ghana has initiated an internal review into a widely circulated video capturing a heated confrontation between two senior faculty members, Professor Ransford Gyampo and Dr George Domfeh, during a live appearance on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, November 15.

The viral footage, which has sparked intense discussion on social media and within academic circles, shows a fierce verbal exchange between the Political Science lecturer and the Development Economist. Their debate quickly escalated into personal attacks, shocking viewers and raising concerns about professional conduct.

In a statement issued on Friday, November 21, the University confirmed that internal processes have begun to assess the conduct of both academics in line with the University’s Statutes (2024) and the Code of Conduct for Academic Senior Members (2011). These regulations outline expected standards of integrity, respect, and decorum for all senior staff.

“The University of Ghana demands high standards of professionalism and integrity from all its faculty and staff,” the statement said. “We expect every member of the University community to uphold these values, not just in their professional roles but also in their private and public engagements.”

The incident occurred during a segment of The Key Points, a current affairs programme known for robust debates on national issues. The on-air disagreement between the two academics quickly deteriorated from policy arguments to a personal confrontation.

The University emphasised its commitment to maintaining the dignity of the institution and preserving public confidence.

“Management remains firmly dedicated to safeguarding the reputation of the University, ensuring that the high standards expected of its members are consistently met,” the statement continued. “The University will take necessary disciplinary actions based on the outcome of the internal review.”

The institution has reiterated its dedication to promoting a culture of mutual respect, integrity, and professionalism values it says must guide both internal relations and the public engagements of its staff.

Police under fire over arrest and continued detention of journalist

Edem Agbana (L) and Manasseh Azure (R) have called out the police over the detention of Amadotor (M) Edem Agbana (L) and Manasseh Azure (R) have called out the police over the detention of Amadotor (M)

The Ghana Police Service has come under intense scrutiny over the arrest and continued detention of journalist Samuel Amadotor, a blogger with Dklassgh.net.

According to a statement issued by the police on Wednesday, November 20, 2025, the blogger was arrested for allegedly publishing false information about the former board chair of the National Communication Authority (NCA) and traditional ruler, Okatakye Boakye Danquah Ababio II.

The police said that Samuel Amadotor has admitted to the crime and would be arraigned before the court on Thursday, November 21, 2025.

A number of notable Ghanaians, including award-winning investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, have called out the police over its handling of the matter.

Reacting to the statement by the police in a post shared on Facebook on Wednesday, he questioned why the police did not arraign the suspect before the court earlier.

According to him, information he has shows that the police have been keeping the journalist for over 48 hours after his arrest, which is a violation of the country’s laws.

“Why have you not put him before the court for this long? Why tomorrow, and not earlier? Some sources close to him say he has been in custody for more than 48 hours. What law allows you to keep a suspect for this long without putting him before the court?

“THIS LAW ON FALSE NEWS SHOULD BE REPEALED. If the person who made the report feels defamed, he can sue the journalist. This law has been abused for too long and we must stop it,” he wrote.

Blogger arrested for allegedly spreading false news about former NCA chair

Before the police issued the statement, Azure, in a post addressed to the Central Investigative Department of the police (CID), indicated that the journalist was arrested over a video involving renowned investigative journalist Anas.

He added that the CID must answer some questions on the arrest, including the reason why the journalist had not been granted bail.

“We are waiting for your statement on the detained journalist. Also, tell us about his other victims apart from the former NCA board chair.

“Sources close to him say he was questioned solely on the Anas video. Is there anything else he did, as alleged? And tell us why you haven’t granted him bail,” he wrote.

The Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Edem Agbana, has also called out the police over its handling of the matter.

He noted that the actions of some police officers make President John Dramani Mahama and his government look bad in the eyes of the public, saying, “The overzealousness, unprofessionalism and incompetence of some security officers can cast a shadow over this government.”

He added, “If you arrest a journalist, issue a statement and let the public know what is happening. The president is a friend to the media, and we must never allow someone’s incompetence to give him a bad name. Don’t wait for people to blame the President and the government before you speak.”

I’ll Not Be Armchair First Lady – Samira

0

Samira Bawumia and Edmund Kyei

FORMER SECOND Lady, Samira Bawumia, has stated that she will be an impactful first lady should her husband, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, become President in 2028.

She has therefore appealed to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates to vote massively for Dr. Bawumia, who is a former Vice President, to lead the party as its flagbearer in the next polls.

“I had the privilege to tour the country during the 2024 campaign period when Dr. Bawumia was the presidential candidate of the NPP and I saw the needs of the people.

“NPP delegates, I appeal to you to vote for Dr. Bawumia. I assure you that I will not just be a First Lady; my primary preoccupation would be the empowerment of the people.

“I will work assiduously as First Lady so that you can improve your livelihoods, and by extension, the lives of the Ghanaian people,” she said.

Mrs. Bawumia was addressing the NPP delegates in Asokwa, Kumasi last Tuesday as part of her campaign tour of the Ashanti Region to win more votes for her husband.

According to the former Second Lady, she has great plans to help alleviate poverty among women and the vulnerable, but she can only implement her plans after Dr. Bawumia becomes president on the NPP ticket.

“Together, we will succeed as a country under Dr. Bawumia’s NPP government,” Mrs. Bawumia noted.

Former NPP First Vice Chairman for Asokwa, Edmund Kyei, said the country’s growth rate stalled immediately the National Democratic Congress (NDC) took over power.

“All the developmental gains we chalked as a country under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration started to retrogress after the NDC took power, so we need the NPP back in 2028,” he pointed out.

Edmund Kyei stated emphatically that Dr. Bawumia is well marketed and the suitable person to lead the NPP back to power, urging the party’s delegates to vote for him.

Create Sustainable Environment For Businesses – CPS Urges Govt

0

Dr. Adu Owusu Sarkodie (3rd R), Dr. Prince Adjei (4th R) and other officials

The government has been urged to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in order to provide sustainable jobs especially in key sectors of the economy for Ghanaians.

In a critical review of the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy by the Centre for Policy Scrutiny (CPS), senior lecturer at the Department of Economics, University of Ghana, Dr. Prince Adjei, said it is imperative for the government to increase economic growth and create more jobs to improve the macroeconomic environment.

According to him,  the 2026 Budget delivers clear gains in job creation and skills development citing the example of the, ‘The Big Push Infrastructure Programme’ which is expected  to drive activity in construction and logistics, and create about 800,000 jobs in 2026.

He, however, said that in spite of the gains in job creation, most of them may be temporary, hence the government must make efforts to create more sustainable jobs through skills training to help improve the livelihoods of people.

He said, “The decline in interest rates, improved credit availability, and enhanced liquidity together with financial sector recovery create a favourable environment for private firms to expand operations and employment”.

Dr. Agyei further noted that the viability and credibility of every major policy introduced by the government in 2025 could be executed if allocations are disbursed timely.

For his part, Executive Director of the Centre for Policy Scrutiny (CPS), Dr. Adu Owusu Sarkodie said  expenditure for 2026 is budgeted to grow by 20.1% on commitment basis from GH¢251.74 to GH¢302.46 billion and by 24.8% on cash basis from GH¢266.21 billion to GH¢332.28 billion.

These growth rates he explained, surpasses the 18.4% budgeted increase in revenue and confirm the loosening of fiscal policy in the 2026 Budget in terms of GDP

Dr. Sakodie also recommended the public sector to institutionalise constant evaluation of government programmes to ensure they are managed and adjusted, as necessary, to achieve expected outcomes and urged the government to intensify its revenue collection.

L-R: Pogba, Sancho, Rashford and Bellingham faced harsh criticisms from the media L-R: Pogba, Sancho, Rashford and Bellingham faced harsh criticisms from the media

The issue of Black players being treated harshly by the media in the UK has become a topical subject in the football world following recent criticism of Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes outspoken Black players face harsher treatment from the media simply because they do not fit the image the media wants them to portray.

According to Wright, the British media admire Black players like N’Golo Kanté, who are quiet, humble, and keep a low profile despite their success in the game.

‘They love Kante but hate Bellingham’ — Ian Wright’s remark sparks online storm

He argued that the same media is quick to “crucify” Black footballers who are outspoken, enjoy a flashy lifestyle, or openly display their wealth.

Here are six Black players who have been harshly criticized by British media for non-football reasons:

Jude Bellingham

The Los Blancos star was lambasted for showing visible frustration after being substituted during England’s match against Albania in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Tosin Adarabioyo

The Chelsea defender was unfairly criticised by British media outlet Daily Mail for purchasing a luxurious mansion at a young age, despite not yet starting a Premier League game.

Raheem Sterling

The Chelsea attacker was labeled a “footie idiot” by The Sun when he earned €100,000 a week at Liverpool.

Marcus Rashford

The Barcelona forward faced media backlash after purchasing five luxury homes worth more than €2 million.

Paul Pogba

The former Manchester United midfielder was slammed for dyeing his hair, with English pundit Danny Mills claiming he looked sloppy and that it could affect sponsorship deals.

Jadon Sancho

The former Chelsea attacker faced strong criticisms from The Sun for buying a car collection that included a luxurious Mercedes Brabus and a Lamborghini Urus.

Takoradi MP Exposed for Lying About Kenkey Prices in Parliament

News Hub Creator3h

Takoradi is buzzing with reactions after a local kenkey seller publicly challenged the Takoradi MP over comments he made about food prices. The MP, speaking in Parliament during discussions on the 2026 Budget, claimed that a ball of kenkey now costs 7 cedis in the city. But traders on the ground say that simply isn’t true.

A kenkey seller at Owusiwaa Catering Services quickly responded, insisting the MP’s statement was misleading. “The Takoradi MP lied. Our kenkey is not 7 GHS but 5 GHS,” she said, sparking debate both online and in town.

Her correction has ignited conversations across Takoradi, with many residents questioning why the MP would quote a price that doesn’t reflect what people actually pay. Some believe he may have exaggerated the figure to make a political point during the budget discussions.

The video of the MP in Parliament, confidently citing the price, has since gone viral. Meanwhile, traders are urging public officials to verify information with locals before making statements that affect national conversations.

What began as a simple comment about kenkey has now become one of the biggest talking points of the week, highlighting once again how disconnected politics and everyday life can sometimes be.

Daddy Lumba Was Too Big To Be Managed By Roman Fada – Kofi Nti

0

Kofi Nti

Highlife singer, Kofi Nti, has rubbished claims that media personality Roman Fada ever managed the late Highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, widely known as Daddy Lumba.

Speaking on OKAY FM with host Nana Romeo, Kofi Nti dismissed the narrative as entirely inaccurate, insisting that only Mr. Kwesi Brenya can be credited as Lumba’s manager.

“I don’t know anyone who has ever managed Lumba apart from Mr. Brenya,” he stressed. “Lumba is too big to be managed by Roman Fada, and he knows that. But because people are saying he is Lumba’s manager, he has accepted it.”

Kofi Nti, who enjoyed a close working relationship with the late icon, recounted how Lumba supported his rise in the industry, often inviting him to major shows and even entrusting him with handling parts of events.

“Sometimes after performing, he would tell me I didn’t charge enough and that I should have let him negotiate,” he revealed. “It was always a privilege to work with him because he barely shared a microphone with people. Apart from Nana Acheampong, Ofori Amponsah, KK Fosu, and recently Sarkodie, he didn’t share the same stage with many artistes.”

Describing Lumba as both a mentor and a father figure, Kofi Nti said the Highlife great recognised his potential early and became a powerful source of guidance.

“He took me in as a son, and I was always happy working with him,” he added.

What Everybody Needs To Know About The Rigging Evils of Proxy Voting

0

Vulnerability to Impersonation and Vote Harvesting

Proxy voting allows a third party to vote on behalf of a registered delegate. This inherently weakens the principle of voter identity verification, creating opportunities for:

  1. Misrepresentation
  2. Delegates are coerced into assigning their vote.
  3. Delegates are being impersonated through fraudulent proxy forms
  4. Aspiring candidates coordinating “block proxies” through inducements
Electoral-integrity studies consistently classify proxy mechanisms as high-risk
due to the difficulty of authenticating whether the proxy vote reflects the true intent of the absent voter. In the case of internal elections, such as the
Presidential election, it is not only essential but also critical to ensure that the proxy votes reflect the true intent of the absent voter.
Next is the absence of an Auditable Chain of Custody
A secure electoral process requires a direct, traceable relationship between the voter and the ballot. Proxy voting inserts an intermediary whose actions cannot be verified!

Finally, Many democracies, including several EU Countries, have abolished proxy voting.

In the United Kingdom, for instance, notable proxy abuse and electoral fraud have led to the conviction of councillors. There have been repeated calls bythe Electoral Reform Society (ERS) to abolish PROXY VOTING!

Police arrest mason over alleged murder of his 13-year-old daughter

0

The Weija Divisional Police Command has launched investigations into the death of a 13-year-old girl, Celestine Adonteng, who was brutalised by her father at Kokrobite in Accra. The statement announcing the investigation was issued on Thursday, November 20.

According to the police, preliminary findings show that the suspect, 54-year-old Mason Isaac Adonteng, subjected the child to severe beatings using a cane, a metal pipe, and other objects after accusing her of taking food meant for her younger sibling.

Despite the victim sustaining multiple injuries, he reportedly failed to seek medical care and confined her in a room.

Police officers, acting on a complaint, visited the home and found the girl unconscious. She was immediately rushed to the Police Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Items retrieved from the scene include a cutlass and a metal pipe believed to have been used in the assault.

In the statement, the Accra Regional Police Command warned parents and guardians against using excessive force in disciplining children, stressing that such acts constitute criminal behaviour and often result in devastating consequences.

The Command further urged the public to promptly report all cases of child abuse and domestic violence to ensure swift intervention and protection of vulnerable victims.

Ghana’s Budget Signals Focus on Real Economic Impact

0

Kpmg
Kpmg

Ghana’s proposed spending plan for next year reflects a fundamental change in how government intends to use the country’s renewed economic stability, according to analysis from professional services firm KPMG.

After experiencing significant financial turbulence over the past two years, the administration is now positioning the budget to translate recovered stability into tangible improvements for households and businesses. The analysis suggests this marks a departure from emergency response mode toward deliberate investment in living standards.

Economic indicators show measurable progress, with inflation declining from 24 percent last year to 9.4 percent by September, while the cedi has strengthened by 37 percent against the dollar as of mid-October. The International Monetary Fund attributes much of the inflation improvement to exchange rate stability, noting how currency movements significantly influence price levels across African economies.

The fiscal framework outlined in the budget demonstrates commitment to sustained discipline. Government aims to achieve a primary surplus of 1.5 percent of gross domestic product on a commitment basis, aligning with the country’s fiscal responsibility framework. This target represents a critical signal following debt restructuring and fiscal challenges experienced in the previous year.

KPMG’s assessment emphasizes how policy interventions now directly target areas affecting ordinary citizens. The analysis points to several strategic focuses including agricultural development to reduce food costs and generate employment, energy infrastructure improvements to lower production expenses for businesses, and transportation projects to connect communities with economic opportunities.

The 24-Hour Economy initiative features prominently in agricultural planning, with government establishing processing zones that will operate continuously to handle cocoa, rice, palm oil, and cassava into finished products. These facilities will utilize modern equipment, cold storage, and renewable power systems. The broader program carries an estimated cost of four billion dollars initially, with government committing 300 million as seed capital and the remainder mobilized through public-private arrangements.

Revenue projections show government targeting 268.1 billion cedis in total collections, representing an 18.3 percent increase over the previous year’s figure of 226.7 billion. Non-oil tax revenue will provide the largest contribution at 216.1 billion cedis, supported by compliance improvements and enforcement measures.

KPMG connects Ghana’s budget to broader continental efforts to mobilize domestic resources for economic transformation rather than depending on external emergency support. The firm concludes that maintaining focus and discipline could enable the country to both preserve stability gains and generate meaningful improvements in citizens’ daily economic experiences.

Ghana Ready for Controlled eCedi Rollout, Says Ecobank Executive

0

Ecedi
e-Cedi

Ghana is prepared to begin a controlled rollout of its central bank digital currency (CBDC) following significant progress made by the Bank of Ghana (BoG), according to Abena Osei-Poku, Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana.

Osei-Poku made the remarks at the Currency Anniversary Conference in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, as part of the Cedi at 60 celebrations. She emphasized that stakeholders in the financial sector have observed meaningful strides from the central bank regarding the introduction of the eCedi.

The Ecobank executive stated that the introduction and full implementation of the eCedi, together with broader digital payment reforms, will be crucial in strengthening Ghana’s monetary sovereignty and reducing dependence on foreign currencies. Her comments align with recent statements from BoG Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama, who announced intensified efforts by the central bank to curb dollarization and reinforce the Cedi as the country’s sole legal tender.

Dr. Asiama cautioned that rising currency substitution threatens the long term stability of the Ghanaian economy. The governor’s position underscores the strategic importance of the eCedi as a tool for maintaining monetary control and reducing reliance on foreign currencies in domestic transactions.

Osei-Poku said Ghana’s ongoing work in payment modernization and digital currency development reflects a strong commitment to building a resilient financial system. She noted that other African countries have demonstrated the regulatory benefits of digital currencies.

The Ecobank Managing Director added that countries such as Nigeria have demonstrated how central bank digital currencies can improve regulatory oversight, stating that digital currencies give the central bank better visibility and control over the entire payment ecosystem. Nigeria launched the eNaira in October 2021, becoming Africa’s first country to introduce a CBDC.

The Bank of Ghana first announced its plans for the eCedi in August 2021, entering into a partnership with Giesecke and Devrient to conduct feasibility studies and develop a prototype. The central bank conducted a pilot program in 2022 that ran for four months in select areas including Accra, Tarkwa and Sefwi Asafo, testing both online and offline functionality to accommodate users without internet access.

The pilot involved approximately 2,750 people making real transactions in their everyday lives. The trial was designed to test whether the CBDC could be used to digitize payments, strengthen the economy, increase financial inclusion and address emerging risks from unregulated private currencies or virtual assets.

Ghana had been among the frontrunners in Africa’s CBDC race, with its digital currency research more advanced than most nations. However, progress has stalled since the initial pilot. The planned 2023 launch was delayed due to high inflation experienced at that time. Former BoG Governor Ernest Addison stated that high inflation was not the context in which to launch a digital currency, prompting officials to slow down the process and refocus efforts on the macro environment.

According to recent reports, the Bank of Ghana expects to launch a retail CBDC in 2025 pending the enactment of necessary legislation. The timeline represents a two year delay from the original target despite the successful pilot program.

Kwame Oppong, who heads fintech and innovation at the BoG, has emphasized that offline payment capability was one of the key features the central bank wanted in its CBDC. He stated that the bank wanted to create an instrument that allows people to live off grid and use it as they would use cash. This feature is particularly important given that approximately 47 percent of Ghanaians lack internet access.

The eCedi will function beyond the last mile of cell connectivity, addressing a critical barrier to financial inclusion. Without offline functionality, a CBDC would exclude nearly half the population and undermine financial inclusion efforts. Oppong noted that while mobile connectivity in Ghana exceeds 100 percent, internet connectivity stands at around 70 percent, with those without internet access mainly residing in rural areas.

Unlike some central banks that have explored distributed ledger technology (DLT) for their CBDCs, Ghana will steer clear of decentralized technology, at least in the initial phase. The BoG has opted for a centralized model, though the eCedi will be flexible to allow interoperability with DLT systems in the future.

The digital currency has received international recognition, securing the Innovation in Digital Currency Design for Financial Inclusion award during Payment and Innovation Week in London. The central bank won the award for its compelling demonstration of the eCedi’s design elements, encompassing governance, accessibility including online and offline capabilities, interoperability and infrastructure with the potential to promote financial inclusion.

The eCedi forms part of the Digital Ghana Agenda, which aims for digitization of Ghana’s 30 million people and government services. The digital currency is designed to complement the Ghanaian cedi and serve as an alternative to physical cash, supporting the Cashlite Agenda. Electronic tokens backed by the Ghana government will replace coin minting or printing paper notes.

Ghana’s new regulatory framework for digital assets is also progressing. Governor Dr. Asiama announced that the Bank of Ghana will begin regulating cryptocurrency platforms and virtual asset service providers by September 2025 through the Virtual Asset Providers Act. The legislation will introduce comprehensive licensing rules and cybersecurity standards, marking a transition from informal adoption to institutional governance.

The BoG is establishing a dedicated unit to oversee digital assets and ensure compliance within the sector. The regulatory framework will require mandatory registration for Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs), enforce anti money laundering protocols and implement enhanced security measures.

Dr. Asiama emphasized that the central bank cannot prevent blockchain technology, so it must move quickly to regulate it. The proactive approach positions Ghana among Africa’s leaders in developing structured digital finance regulation.

Osei-Poku, who became Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana and Regional Executive for the Anglophone West Africa Region in January 2024, brings over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry. Her expertise spans corporate and investment banking, business banking and risk management at the regional level. She previously served as Managing Director of Absa Bank Ghana, where she successfully led the transition from Barclays to Absa.

The executive currently serves as Chairperson of the Advisory Board of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana and is a member of the executive councils of the Ghana Association of Banks and the National Banking College. She holds a Master of Business Administration from Manchester Business School and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Statistics from the University of Ghana.

Ecobank Ghana operates as part of the pan African Ecobank Group, which maintains presence across 33 African countries. The bank has 65 branches, numerous point of sale terminals, many Quick Response (QR) codes in stores and over 248 Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) across Ghana.

The successful implementation of the eCedi will depend on its ability to drive financial inclusion, enhance payment efficiency and build public trust while avoiding the adoption challenges experienced by Nigeria’s eNaira, which by March 2024 accounted for just 0.36 percent of total money in circulation.

‘Jail him for life’ – Ohemaa Mercy descends on landlord beating wife in viral video

Ghanaian gospel musician Ohemaa Mercy has weighed in on a viral video that has sparked nationwide discussion, in which a man was seen assaulting his wife.

In a video shared online on November 20, 2025, Ohemaa Mercy condemned the act, adding that the Ghana Police Service should sentence the man, identified as John Odartey Lamptey, to life imprisonment.

She explained that John Odartey Lamptey’s actions are unpardonable and that he deserves to rot in jail.

“This is the kind of man who has to be sentenced to life imprisonment. The police shouldn’t let him go scot-free. I have never commented on any issue on social media before, but as for this one, I couldn’t sleep.

I had confirmation from God to divorce my husband – Ohemaa Mercy

“The only prayer I am praying is that every woman who is going through so much, may heaven give you the strength to come out,” she said.

Ohemaa Mercy also noted that women experiencing similar ordeals should not hide behind societal expectations and continue to endure such torture.

According to her, the devil often uses men like John Odartey Lamptey to destroy the lives of innocent women; therefore, it is her greatest wish that anyone going through similar trauma will speak up.

“Those Christian women in their rooms going through the same in the name of what God and society will say, shame on you. Because the devil can place your life in a human being who will destroy you. He will kill you,” she added.

ECOWAS Ruling: Justice Srem-Sai should have resigned by now

0

A former Mayor of Kumasi, Sam Pyne, has criticised the Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, for his conduct in presenting a ruling by the ECOWAS Court of Justice dismissing the interim measures filed by the former Chief Justice.

According to him, the Deputy Attorney General should have tendered his resignation after the incident, noting that in other countries such drastic actions would have been taken.

ECOWAS court dismisses Torkornoo’s application for interim measures

Speaking on Peace FM on November 20, 2025, he said, “With regard to the court’s announcement dismissing the interim measures against the former Chief Justice, the Deputy Attorney General, Dr Srem Sai, would have resigned by now if this had happened in another country.”

Pyne accused Dr Srem-Sai of being dishonest, describing his actions as the deliberate release of selective information.

In his view, the Deputy Attorney General intended to create the impression that the entire case of human rights violations filed by the former Chief Justice had been dismissed.

“You are a Deputy Minister who has sworn an oath to uphold the truth at all times. You went to court, the ruling was given, and yet you deliberately released selective information to mislead the public and create the impression that the former Chief Justice’s entire case was dismissed.

“As Attorney General of the state who is paid with taxpayer’s money, I am not saying he lied but he was being dishonest. The issue about the former CJ [Torkornoo] isn’t a private but a public matter,” he continued.

Sam Pyne, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), also argued that the Deputy Attorney General should have informed the public about the ECOWAS Court’s ruling on the substantive issue, rather than focusing on trivialities.

“… As Deputy Attorney General, despite the ECOWAS Court directing the state to respond to allegations of human rights violations, he chose to highlight a trivial ruling instead of addressing the substantive issue,” he noted.

Sam Pyne’s criticism follows Justice Srem-Sai’s recent update on the case.

On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Justice Srem-Sai disclosed that the ECOWAS Court of Justice had ruled that Torkornoo’s application for interim measures did not satisfy the criteria for a grant of interim measures.

Quoting the court directly, Dr Srem-Sai in Facebook post stated that Torkornoo’s conduct does not support her claim of irreparable harm arising from the removal process and the Justice Pwamang Committee probe.

He added that the judges noted that, despite being suspended on April 22, 2025, and fully aware of the ongoing processes, she waited three months before filing her motion.

He wrote, “The ECOWAS Court has, this morning, dismissed Mrs Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s application for interim measures. The Court stated that the application did not satisfy the criteria for a grant of interim measures. More particularly, the Court held that:

‘The Applicant’s own conduct defeats her claim of imminent and irreparable harm. The Court is, therefore, satisfied that the Applicant has not demonstrated the existence of imminent or exceptional circumstance that will justify the urgency of the application filed almost 3 months after the act complained of.

Sacked Chief Justice Torkornoo wins key ruling against government at ECOWAS Court

‘In the light of the Applicant’s failure to meet the requirement of urgency, the Court finds no basis to assess the remaining criteria for provisional measures, same being cumulative. The request for provisional measures as outlined by the Applicant, same not substantiated, is therefore dismissed,’” Dr Srem-Sai explained.

Meanwhile, the ECOWAS Court has ordered the government to file its defence in the human rights violation case within 30 days, despite the state having raised a preliminary objection challenging the Court’s jurisdiction to hear the case filed by former Chief Justice Torkornoo.

Recruitment Stampede: More Questions Than Answers, In A Country Of ‘Teflon Verdicts’

0

Undoubtedly, Ghana is a country full of surprising developments, especially in the political arena. But was it my imagination, or did I see a TV news clip of President John Mahama expressing initial comments that seemed to blame the system used under the previous government, for the ghastly recruitment stampede that caused the deaths of six ‘Ghana royals’ on November 12, 2025?

And did I really hear President Mahama, Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), say that the exercise should have been better organised, but that it had been done according to the existing format which his administration had inherited; and they would now improve it?

But even without an investigation, isn’t it natural to think that those who organise an exercise should be the first to be held responsible for its outcome, good or bad?

Anyway, the Accra exercise which was suspended after the stampede tragedy, is to resume on Thursday, November 20, 2025. President Mahama directed that it should be on hold for the process to be reviewed. However, the exercise in other regions continued.

According to media reports, the deceased were six young women who were among the 34 stampede victims rushed to the 37 Military Hospital on that fateful Wednesday morning. In response to media advertisements, some 21,000 young men and women had thronged the El-Wak Stadium, Accra, for screening for possible enlistment into the various arms of the GAF.

A statement issued by the GAF said preliminary investigations indicated that the stampede was triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants who rushed to enter the stadium at 06:20 a.m., ahead of the commencement.

Briefing Parliament on November 12, Finance Minister and currently Acting Minister for Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, confirmed the six deaths, and a number injured, some critically and on admission at the 37 Military Hospital.

Dr. Forson noted that the recruitment process, had been decentralised to ease congestion and ensure transparency.

“The Ministry of Defence has extended its condolences to the bereaved families,” and he assured the public of a thorough investigation into the incident.

Under the new arrangements the resumed Accra exercise will take place at eight sub-centres within five locations, including El-Wak. Qualified applicants in batches of 600 persons would each receive a text message with details.

One wishes that the revised procedure will ensure minimum inconvenience for the applicants.

Nevertheless, the deaths of six young women in a manner one wouldn’t want to hear about even in a nightmare, is a huge blot on the image of the GAF.

How was it possible for applicants for recruitment into our GAF, noted globally for efficiency and discipline, to meet such a terrible fate?

Should the organisers not have assessed the existing system to see if it needed changes?

Furthermore, surely, those in charge of the exercise knew what numbers to expect, going by the thousands who had bought the GH¢

200 application form?

Did they factor in the numbers, said to be 21,000? That figure is a stark, terrifying reflection of the gravity of the country’s unemployment problem; realistically, to be tackled by private sector jobs.

Why was it not possible to stagger the recruitment, to cater for a manageable number each day, possibly even allowing for the provision of seating?

Were there any toilets? Reportedly, some applicants had started queuing the previous night!

From the images, most applicants were wearing white t-shirts, meaning that perhaps they had received an instruction about a dress code. So why didn’t the same dress code thinking extend to ensuring the well-being, health and safety of the applicants?

Not surprisingly, a Board of Inquiry was immediately announced, to find out the answers to the inevitable questions about the stampede; a country in shock and needing answers.

But the general skepticism about investigation verdicts, evident in online comments, is quite understandable. Ours is a country where we are quick to set up investigation bodies, with fanfare, but the conclusions are usually slow in coming; and, worse, hardly ever do we get to know the identified offenders and their punishment.

Take the example of the recurrent fire outbreaks in markets, why are there always immediate promises of an investigation, but the outcome is hardly ever made known?

Usually, investigation findings are in the ‘non-stick’ realm; no charge sticks to anybody; nobody is held accountable, what I term ‘Teflon verdicts’ – to borrow a tag from the nickname first given to the 40th US President, Ronald Reagan, ‘Teflon President’. (Teflon is a kind of plastic used to coat pots and pans so that the food will not stick to the bottom during cooking.)

According  to reference sources, it was “Representative Patricia Schroeder, a Democrat from Colorado, (who in 1983) coined the term “Teflon President” in reference to Ronald Reagan. She said, “He’s just like a Teflon frying pan: Nothing sticks to him”. Schroeder was frustrated by the president’s ability to evade blame for political and economic issues, unlike other politicians.”

If no blame for anybody, how can there be punishment to serve as a deterrent?

Anyhow, I hope that the revised recruitment format is hassle free for the already conceivably stressed applicants.

Notably, the GAF November 12 trauma has highlighted the supremacy of the mobile phone in our lives. These days it appears that every employment opportunity depends on a job-seeker having a sophisticated mobile phone!

It’s interesting, and disturbing, that the assumption is that every young person, every aspiring GAF recruit has a smartphone, capable of undertaking the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tasks required by the application process!

Perhaps the fact that as many as 21,000 were able to manouvre their way through the online process and qualify for the 2025 screening, indicates that it is ‘doable’.

But does it mean that it is a level playing field? Is it truly an all-inclusive opportunity?

Should it be assumed that every potential applicant has a smartphone? Or that everyone lives in an area with good mobile phone network?

Does this state of affairs take account of the digital divide (“the gulf between those who have ready access to computers and the internet, and those who do not”); the importance of inclusivity “equal access to opportunities and resources”?

Thus, I see as a factor for consideration the need to devise an avenue for would-be applicants who don’t have smartphones or ICT expertise – surely, there will be some?

Another issue on my mind: in the resumed exercise, are the November 12 applicants required to go through the same application process? Are they to pay the same fee? Why didn’t the release about the resumption provide information about that?

So many questions needing answers!

I can’t help thinking that perhaps it was such perplexing issues that inspired American singer Johnny Nash’s 1972 hit, ‘There are more questions than answers’.

But, hopefully, the Board’s findings will not merit the ‘Teflon verdict’ description.

Former Liverpool star, Sadio Mane has opened up about his relationship with former teammates Roberto Firmino and Egyptian forward Mohammed Salah.

According to Mane who spoke fondly about his bond with Roberto Firmino, the Brazilian is the best teammate and human being anybody can ask for.

On his relationship with Mohammed Salah, the Senegalese revealed in the interview with Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand that the rivalry between him and the Egyptian was often exaggerated by the media.

‘They love Kante but hate Bellingham’ — Ian Wright’s remark sparks online storm

Mane explained that there was never personal tension between him and Salah, instead the rivalry came from a shared desire to push each other to become better for their team.

“I have never seen a football player or a human being like Bobby in my entire life. He is the only player that i have his shirt in my house.”

“Mo Salah is a great player. We had rivalry but it was not intense like that but we pushed each other to be better for the team,” Sadio Mane said.

Starmer arrives in South Africa as G20 gathers without Trump

0

Sir Keir Starmer arrived in Johannesburg in South Africa Sir Keir Starmer arrived in Johannesburg in South Africa

The prime minister has arrived in Johannesburg in South Africa for a gathering of world leaders at the annual G20 summit.

The summit brings together the 20 biggest economies, although Donald Trump has decided not to attend over widely discredited claims that white people are being persecuted in the country.

Sir Keir Starmer, whose critics label him “never here Keir” because of the frequency of his international trips, will emphasise the benefits of a prime minister acting as an ambassador for UK businesses abroad.

Before the summit formally opens, Sir Keir will visit a Johannesburg depot to see trains that were built in Derby and announce a new deal where the UK will “provide strategic advice and consultancy services” to South Africa’s railways.

An organisation called Crossrail International, which is owned by the UK government, will carry out the work.

It has also signed a deal with Vietnam to provide similar services there.

Downing Street argues that Africa provides what it calls “unparalleled future opportunities for UK businesses” given half of Africans are under the age of 20 and more than a quarter of the world’s population will live in Africa by 2050.

“I will focus on the deals we can do, the business we can do, with our partner countries and make sure that the work we do internationally is impacting directly at home,” he told reporters on the flight to South Africa.

“If you want to deal with the cost of living and make people better off with good secure jobs, investment from G20 partners and allies is really important,” he added.

Trump will skip the summit, after declaring it a “total disgrace” in a post on social media, and repeating his claim that white Afrikaners are being persecuted in South Africa.

White South Africans have been offered refugee status in the US by the Trump administration, and currently have priority over ethnic groups.

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa said the absence of the US at G20 was “their loss” and added that “boycott politics doesn’t work”.

None of South Africa’s political parties – including those that represent Afrikaners and the white community in general – have claimed that there is a genocide in South Africa.

NDC spokesman renews call for Jean Mensah’s exit

0

According to a report by Kumasi mail on Friday 20, November 2025, Prince Cobbah Houston Nyarku, communications team member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed confidence that the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensah, will soon be removed from office following the swearing-in of the new Chief Justice.

In an interview with Ebenezer Yaw Jonah on Abusua FM, Houston Nyarku revealed that several petitions calling for Jean Mensah’s removal have been filed but the absence of a substantive Chief Justice had delayed the process

He said that with the new Chief Justice in place, the legal procedure for her removal can now advance.

Describing Jean Mensah as “not fit for purpose,” Houston Nyarku stated, “The EC boss will go soon. She doesn’t deserve to be there.

He further noted that even the NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia shares this view

Houston Nyarku emphasized that the removal process is constitutionally provided for and must be properly followed.

“There is a procedure for removing the Electoral Commission Chairperson. If the law finds her culpable, then we will remove her,” he said.

When asked about the justification for her removal, he responded, “What’s the point of allowing someone who is not fit to stay? The constitution gives us this option. The impeachment of the President, the removal of the Chief Justice, and the removal of the EC Chairperson are all constitutional provisions.

He dismissed concerns that acting against Jean Mensah might set an undesirable precedent.

“Are we to ignore wrongdoing because of fear of setting a precedent? If she is committing wrongs, we must act,” he argued.

Some Gospel Musicians Are Using Charms – Celestine Donkor

0

Celestine Donkor

Singer, Celestine Donkor, has alleged that some gospel musicians are resorting to charms, spells, and spiritual manipulation in their quest for fame.

Speaking in an interview with Taller Dee on Accra-based Number One FM, Celestine Donkor, claimed that the fierce competition for relevance in the gospel industry has driven some artistes into practices completely at odds with their ministry.

“Recently, we heard that some gospel musicians are using charms and placing spells on someone just to block their progress or get ahead,” she revealed. “These things are driven by desperation—the desire to be the one on top.”

Celestine said the issue is far more real than many are willing to admit.

“It happens. It is among them. Even I have been a victim—both physically and spiritually,” she stated, confirming that she has personally experienced such attacks.

Her comments challenge the belief that gospel musicians should operate solely under spiritual purity and goodwill.

NPP Presidential Primaries: Committee Rejects Diaspora Proxy Votes Petition

0

Joseph Osei-Owusu

Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee (PEC), Joseph Osei-Owusu, has rejected petitions from external branches challenging the ban on proxy voting in the upcoming 2026 presidential primaries of the party.

In a petition dated November 10, 2025 and signed by chairpersons of 30 external branches, the group described the directive as “unconstitutional, discriminatory”, and a direct attempt to disenfranchise legitimate delegates who live and work outside Ghana.

The group also argued that the Presidential Elections Committee overstepped its mandate by unilaterally announcing that “there shall be no proxy voting” for the presidential primaries in January.

But addressing the media following a meeting with flagbearer aspirants at the party’s headquarters yesterday in Accra, Chairman of the Presidential Elections Committee, Mr. Joseph Osei-Owusu, said the restriction will remain in force to safeguard the credibility and smooth conduct of the polls.

According to him, the committee had carefully reviewed various appeals but concluded that lifting the ban on proxy vote could complicate the electoral process and may result in disputes.

He stated, “We have listened to all kinds of petition, we have read the petitions presented by sections of the party, and after listening to all that, we came to a conclusion that for the sake of conducting an election that is incident-free, respected, a very credible election, that provision or ban should be maintained. We will still not have proxy voting in this 2026 presidential primaries, that position should be maintained.”

The party first announced the ban earlier this year, raising concern among members of the party as well as some students abroad who believe the decision disenfranchises them contrary to the provisions of Article 8 of the party’s constitution, which recognises the branches and grants them full participatory rights in internal elections.

The petitioners argued that proxy voting is the only feasible mechanism that would provide them opportunity to participate in the election, as they cannot be physically present.

The group further mentioned that the party has successfully implemented proxy voting in previous presidential primaries and national executive elections, and are therefore surprised why it cannot consider proxy voting.

Mr. Osei-Owusu still insisted that preserving this rule would help prevent challenges that may arise due to logistical challenges as well as enhance the credibility of the polls.

As part of the Elections Committee’s mandate to conduct a credible and transparent election, the committee presented a soft copy of the party’s provisional voters register containing delegates eligible to vote in the January 31 presidential primaries to all the flagbearer aspirants.

Flagbearer aspirants present at the meeting to receive the provisional register include former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister for Education and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and a former secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.

Fred Oware, one of the stalwarts of the party, received the provisional register on behalf of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, while lawyer and former MP for Asante Akyem North, Andy Appiah-Kubi also received the register on behalf of former Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

Mr. Osei-Owusu, who encouraged the aspirants to go through the register extensively, also appealed to them to submit their concerns, if there are any, for corrections to be made before it is submitted to the various constituencies for exhibition ahead of the election in January.

Feminists always want to destroy men

DKB is a Ghanaian comedian DKB is a Ghanaian comedian

Ghanaian comedian DKB has jumped to the defence of Prof Ransford Gyampo, a lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), after an association identifying itself as ‘Girl Power’, a female alumni group of the school, petitioned the World Bank Group and other agencies to suspend him.

In their petition dated November 18, 2025, the group demanded that the World Bank, USAID, and eleven other agencies halt their financial support to the University.

According to them, Professor Ransford Gyampo was indicted in BBC Africa Eye’s ‘Sex for Grades’ exposé; therefore, the donor agencies should ensure their funds do not facilitate an environment where “sexual harassment, abuse of power, and the victimisation of women are normalised.”

Following the petition, DKB, in a post shared on X, noted that the petition from the female group is unnecessary and an attempt to tarnish Gyampo’s reputation.

DKB emphasised that the main focus of most feminists is to destroy men who have built a name for themselves.

“Feminists always want to destroy men,” he said.

He also added that Prof Gyampo deserves a second chance, even if the allegations against him are true.

“…so, no man deserves a second chance or reformation? He who is without sin, cast your stone! Sia,” he added.

Police at Kokrobite in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region have arrested a couple for allegedly beating their 13-year-old daughter to death after accusing her of eating her younger brother’s food.

The victim, identified as Baby, was reportedly assaulted by her father, Issah Mohammed, and her stepmother, Yaa Grace, after the latter claimed the girl had taken the food while Issah was away at work.

Sources indicate that Issah had previously divorced Baby’s biological mother following repeated incidents of abuse and is now living with his new partner, who has also been implicated in the case.

30-year-old man jailed 12 months for indecent assault on 4-year-old

In a viral video circulating on X on November 20, 2025, neighbours alleged that Issah beat the child severely, resulting in critical internal injuries.

The couple has also been accused of confining Baby in a separate room without food or water, where she died the next day.

Suspicious neighbours alerted the police, leading to the arrest of both suspects.

Man in viral assault video remanded; two others charged

A relative of Baby’s biological mother, Justina Acquah, expressed outrage over the incident, alleging that Issah had a long history of abusive behaviour and calling for justice for the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Kokrobite District Police Command has commenced investigations, and the body has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for autopsy.

‘NPP Needs Unifier Bawumia To Win 2028 Polls’

0

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie

FORMER VICE President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, has been described as a unifier, who has what it takes to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to win power again in 2028.

Coordinator for Dr. Bawumia’s Campaign, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, making the remarks said the NPP urgently needs a candidate who can unify the party to lead them to victory in 2028.

He said naturally, people will be disappointed after a party had lost political power, stressing that it takes a person who can unify the party to lead in these moments.

“With the issues we’ve identified as the cause of our defeat, I believe strongly that Dr. Bawumia is the best person to unify and lead the party.

“These include the apathy we suffered nationwide, which is one of the main reasons that we lost political power in 2024”, Dr. Ayew Afriyie, who is the MP for Effiduase Asokore, said.

He vehemently debunked assertions that the party lost the 2024 polls solely because of Dr. Bawumia, stating that every truthful person knows that the blame on Dr. Bawumia is not fair.

Aside apathy, he said, some policies of the government such as the introduction of the E-levy (Electronic Transfer Levy) and imposition of taxes on betting and others, did not help.

Dr. Ayew Afriyie stated that “Every NPP delegate knows why we lost the 2024 elections,” reiterating that it is totally wrong for any person to blame Dr. Bawumia for the election defeat.

Addressing party delegates in Asokwa when former Second Lady, Samira Bawumia visited the area to campaign, he said Dr. Bawumia will surely return NPP back to power in 2028.

Dr. Ayew Afriyie called for hard work and unity among NPP members, noting that the NPP, with Dr. Bawumia, who is popular as flagbearer, can win political power in 2028.

Wiegman Names England Squad For China And Ghana Friendlies

0

England team that won the 2025 European title

England head coach Sarina Wiegman has announced her squad for the Lionesses’ upcoming international friendlies against China and Ghana later this month.

The European champions will face China first November 29 at Wembley Stadium, before hosting Ghana’s Black Queens at St Mary’s Park on December 2.

One of the standout selections is London City Lionesses forward Freya Godfrey, who earns her first senior call-up after scoring twice against Tottenham earlier this month. The 19-year-old, a regular for England’s Under-23s, joins the senior squad for the first time.

Manchester City duo Lauren Hemp and Grace Clinton return to the squad after recovering from injury. However, Chelsea’s Lauren James and Jess Carter have not been included. James, who has recently returned from injury, will remain with her club to continue her recovery, while Carter has been granted time off following the conclusion of the NWSL season.

England will also be without several key players through injury, including Michelle Agyemang, Alex Greenwood, Hannah Hampton and Leah Williamson.

In the goalkeeping department, Wiegman has named Sophie Baggaley alongside Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse. Between them, the trio have just one senior England cap, highlighting the opening for competition in the position.

Defenders Anouk Denton, Grace Fisk, Taylor Hinds and midfielder Lucia Kendall retain their places after being called up in the October international window.

Agent fees fuel Ghana’s high rent

0

The Senior Rent Officer and Head of Public Relations at the Rent Control Department, Emmanuel Xove Kporsu, has attributed the rising cost of rent in Ghana to unregulated agent activities.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday, November 21, Mr Kporsu said the conduct of some agents and brokers continues to distort the rental market, pushing tenants to pay far more than they should.

He explained that the Real Estate Agency Act, passed in 2020, and a subsequent stakeholder engagement held in October, are intended to sanitise the sector by regulating fees and operations of agents. According to him, a council has already been established to oversee the implementation of the law.

Mr Kporsu noted that under the new framework, the council will prescribe approved fees for anyone operating as an agent or broker, issue licences and certificates, and ensure only qualified persons operate within the space.

“You cannot sit under a tree and call yourself an agent. It is an offence to call yourself an agent if you do not have your licence. The space will be regulated,” he stressed.

He further linked high rental charges to collusion between landlords and unregistered agents, explaining that although the law prohibits landlords from demanding more than six months’ rent advance, some agents influence landlords to request as much as two years.

“The agent is a contributor to the high rent in Ghana. The law says the landlord does not have the right to demand more than six months’ rent advance, but the tenant has the right to pay more than six months.

“The issue is that the agent colludes with the landlord to demand two years because they feel their fees are small if they take only six months,” he said.

Feed Ghana Programme must drive transformation, not just improvement – Prof Danquah

0

Prof Eric Yirenkyi Danquah, Founding Director of West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement, has emphasised that the Feed Ghana Programme (FGP) must aim for transformative change rather than mere improvement.

He stressed that the FGP, government’s flagship initiative designed to accelerate the transformation and modernisation of the agricultural sector should be a catalyst for revolutionary change in the sector.

The professor of Plant Molecular Genetics at the University of Ghana said this while delivering his keynote address at the Food, Agriculture, Technology and Sustainability Conference at Ho Technical University (HTU) themed: “Rethinking the Future of Food and its Allied Systems in an Era of Sustainability and Circularity.”

“FGP is a good start but Ghana needs transformation, not another improvement plan. Our greatest opportunity is to build a science-led, innovative-driven, market-ready agricultural economy,” he said.

He said the FGP must succeed and not fail “because if this fails, we’re doomed for life,” outlining that its success would mean Ghana feeding itself, farmers producing for markets, not survival, youth entering agribusiness profitably, climate-resilient, data-driven farming and, Ghana becoming a net exporter, not an importer.

The globally recognised plant geneticist and science leader suggested that things be done differently for the desired change, including more science, innovation and modern breeding, strengthened seed systems and breeder seed pipelines, fixed agricultural financing, strong irrigation and water management, and data and digital tools for decision-making.

“Agriculture, you know is central but growth slowed down terribly over a very long time, imports rise in over $2.5 billion. And when you look deeper, you see that yields are too low, post-harvest losses. There is weak irrigation, limited finance. And we need to reset Ghana and I’m happy that we have a government which is talking about resetting Ghana. What do we mean by resetting Ghana? Past plans failed. Why did they fail? Weak execution. With weak execution, what do you expect?”

He called for visionary investment, turning knowledge into national power through sustained investment in science, technology and innovation saying, “The prosperity of nations is written in their budgets for research.”

Prof Danquah wondered why Ghana would wait for planes to arrive from Paris and Tel Aviv to give vegetable seeds to farmers to plant and said the time had come to start pressing charges of crime against humanity “for politicians who do not invest in science and technology to face the law because of course, many die of their inaction.”

Prof Ibok N. Oduro, an astute researcher and professor of Post-harvest Technology at the Department of Food Science and Technology at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in her presentation described Ghana’s food system as a story of both “progress and paradox,” saying where there were notable strides, there were still challenges of food security, poverty and sustainability issues.

She noted the country had potential for agricultural growth but needed to address factors like climate change, limited access to modern farming techniques and market infrastructure, warning that “We cannot continue as usual. We must innovate not only in laboratories, but in policies, practices and mindsets.”

Mr Eric Opoku, Minister of Food and Agriculture was grateful for the conference and said the insights, experiences and the dialogue from the conference aligned with the FGP initiative, designed to ensure that Ghana was able to produce food sufficiently to feed her citizens and to ensure the agriculture sector was repositioned to guarantee incessant supply of raw materials for agro-industrial operations.

He assured of government’s readiness to mobilise all the resources available, material and human, to make an impact, saying, “We have the brainpower, except that we are not making maximum use of the brainpower that we have.”

Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and Caretaker Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, through his representative, said the transformation of the agriculture sector could not occur in silos but required a coordinated ecosystem that linked research, industry, students, entrepreneurs and policy makers.

“It requires that knowledge generated in universities and research institutions is translated into usable technologies and commercially viable solutions that benefit farmers, agribusinesses and households.”

Dr Marindame Kombate, a representative from Ghana Circular Economy Centre, said circular economy was not a side conversation but central to the future of Ghana’s food and agriculture systems, urging, “Let us design a future where waste becomes value, innovation becomes opportunities and a future where Ghana leads Africa in the secular transition.”

Prof Ben Q. Honyenuga, Vice-Chancellor, HTU said the conference was in line with the university’s vision to become a hub of practical education, advancing sustainable global development and alluded to its breakthrough research which reduced the gestation period of baobab plant from between 20 to 30 years to only two and a half.

“Additionally, our niche area in hospitality and tourism management positions us to explore the intersection between food systems and its value chain. We cannot talk about hospitality without talking about food and agriculture technology and allied fields.”

James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, assured the Vice-Chancellor that the Regional Coordinating Council was ready to collaborate with the university.

Senyo Hosi commends government’s economic discipline

Senyo Hosi is an economic policy analyst Senyo Hosi is an economic policy analyst

Economic policy analyst and entrepreneur, Senyo Hosi, has praised the Mahama government for demonstrating fiscal prudence and restoring macroeconomic stability since assuming office in January.

He however cautioned that much more must be done to make the recovery sustainable and inclusive.

Speaking at the 2025 Deloitte Economic Dialogue on the 2026 Budget, Hosi described the budget as “great” and reflective of discipline and progress, but stressed that Ghana has yet to achieve meaningful transformation.

He noted that while revenue outturns in 2025 exceeded projections — GH¢226 billion against a forecast of GH¢211 billion — and expenditure was contained, the 2026 budget “is not transformational.”

“There’s brilliance in this budget, especially in capital expenditure plans meant to drive growth. But the question is whether that infrastructure will stimulate sustainable growth,” he said.

Hosi commended government’s restructuring of mineral royalties and avoidance of the controversial Agyapa deal, arguing that Ghana would have lost billions annually had the deal gone through.

He also endorsed the Gold Board’s traceability policy, describing it as one of the most significant economic reforms in the past decade.

He warned that inequality, food insecurity, and unemployment remain deep-rooted challenges.

Senyo Hosi cited IMF and census data showing youth underemployment at 50 percent, with poverty levels largely unchanged and food insecurity affecting 15 million people, up from 11 million in 2016.

On agriculture, he lamented that the sector employs over 38 percent of the workforce but contributes only 21 percent to GDP, calling it “structurally weak and underproductive.”

Hosi also downplayed the government’s “24-hour economy” initiative, saying it should be the outcome of sound policy rather than a slogan.

“You don’t declare a 24-hour economy. You create conditions for it,” he argued.

He urged government and the private sector to prioritize research, industrialization, and transparency as pillars of long-term growth.

“Beyond applause and slogans, we must make Ghana productive again — research-driven, transparent, and fair,” he said.

The Deloitte Economic Dialogue brought together policymakers, academics, and industry leaders to analyze Ghana’s annual budget and its implications for growth and fiscal management.

The 2025 edition focused on the theme “Resetting Growth, Jobs, and Economic Transformation” under Ghana’s IMF-supported stabilization program.

An unknown number of pupils have been abducted by armed men from a Catholic school in central Nigeria, marking the second school kidnapping in less than a week.

The latest attack targeted St Mary’s School in Papiri, Niger state, where authorities had already ordered the temporary closure of all boarding schools due to rising security threats.

“The exact number of abducted pupils is yet to be confirmed as security agencies continue to assess the situation,” Niger state authorities said in a statement.

Nigeria has faced a renewed wave of attacks by armed groups in recent days, including the kidnapping on Monday of 25 schoolgirls from a boarding school in nearby Kebbi state.

The surge in attacks has underscored the deepening insecurity in the West African nation and prompted President Bola Tinubu to postpone planned foreign trips.
