Gyakye Quayson reacts to ruling after 3 years of legal battle [Video]

0

Assin North Member of Parliament (MP) James Gyakye Quayson has expressed joy and relief after being acquitted and discharged following criminal charges related to allegations of dual citizenship.

The criminal jurisdiction of the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh, delivered the ruling on Wednesday, April 9, concluding a three-year legal battle.

Mr. Quayson faced five charges, including forgery of a passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office.

Speaking in an interview after the court proceedings, Mr. Quayson expressed satisfaction with the decision, noting that the outcome was expected.

“Well, it’s the same as your reaction. It’s almost expected because you see, when a man is innocent, no matter what you do, it will be pronounced as some later date. They were for persecution. They were trying to prosecute, but this is a court of law. That’s the difference between prosecution and persecution,” he said.

Mr. Quayson also commended Justice Yanzuh for her work, calling the ruling justice for both himself and the country.

“I’m very proud that our lady justice, Mary… I was going to tell her in the courtroom, but Bruce doesn’t allow that. I was going to tell her she’s a very decent human being. And more blessings for her. Thanks to God, thanks to all these people behind me—family, friends, my dear sister here, member of parliament. We are all in this together, and I think this is a day for a synod. Justice for a synod and justice for Ghana,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the lawmaker announced he would release an article on the matter soon.

“It’s not about me. So I will release, if you’re more interested, I have a short brief article. I can give it to you guys to go and put your own thoughts together. Whatever portion you want to release, all of it or part of it, that’s fine. But you know, this is… Justice for everybody, including you guys,” he added.

The ruling brings finality to the long-standing legal battle over claims that Mr. Quayson held Canadian citizenship when he filed to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections—an act the prosecution argued violated the Ghanaian Constitution.

Public announcement of Chief Justice’s removal was done in bad faith

A member of the NPP Communication team, Ishaq Ibrahim, has taken on the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, for making a public announcement of the petition for the removal of Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, without her prior notice.

He argued that the minister acted in bad faith by putting out a statement without serving her copies of the petitions.

He made the remark during an interview on GHOne TV, on April 8, 2025, while speaking to the ongoing impeachment process of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

“Why was there a need for Felix Kwakye Ofosu to announce to the public that the government had received petitions calling for the removal of the Chief Justice without contacting her first? She heard of the news about the petitions to remove her from the media.

“If you wanted to root out frivolous rhetorics on the matter, why didn’t you conduct it privately, until such a time that you needed to invite her? Yet, you first announced it, letting her get to know of the matter through the media,” he stated.

He further asserted that the government failed to respect her privacy by making the issue public before she was later served copies of the petitions on her request.

“So, you see that they’re not doing it in good faith. Why didn’t they respect her privacy? The public didn’t have to know. In fact, there was no need for the public to know about petitions for the Chief Justice’s removal. The president could have gone ahead with the consultation with the Council of State and invited her when she is needed,” he added.

He noted that it was needless for the minister to have engaged the public since the president and the Council of State could still proceed with the process without the media razzmatazz.

“If you were in her shoes, how would you feel? Imagine that you hear in the media you’ve been charged with some crime, and you have not been served personally; obviously, it will cause anxiety,” he lamented.

He maintained that the matter was handled poorly by the authorities involved from the onset.

Dancehall musician Shatta Wale Dancehall musician Shatta Wale

Ghanaian dancehall musician, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has expressed dissatisfaction with industry players for not supporting his craft despite his numerous achievements.

In a post shared on X on April 7, 2025, Shatta Wale noted that his music has been breaking boundaries recently, citing his collaboration with Jamaican musician Vybz Kartel and his win at the 2025 International Reggae and Dancehall awards.

He emphasised that this is a great opportunity for Ghanaians, especially music lovers, to tap into his blessings.

However, he said Ghanaians are not supporting his efforts.

Shatta Wale added that if Ghanaians don’t want him to succeed in the music industry, they won’t succeed in their various fields either.

“This is a big opportunity for Ghana but as usual, agenda must agend cuz it’s Shatta Wale… But imagine every musician and stakeholder taps into this great international artiste’s blessings on Shatta Wale… If deh no go make ago, dem too dem no go” he wrote in pidgin English.

Shatta Wale’s comment follows a tweet from a fan who observed that Ghanaians are not taking advantage of the support Vybz Kartel has been giving Shatta Wale over the past months.

0

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

A recent poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics has revealed that 57% of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters prefer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the party in the 2028 presidential elections.

Dr. Bawumia, who was the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, emerged as the clear front-runner should the party’s delegates select a flagbearer for the next election cycle.

According to the poll, Dr. Bawumia commands 48% of the overall vote in the prospective 2028 NPP leadership race.

His closest contender, Kennedy Agyapong, garners 25%, while Dr. Osei Adutwum follows with 13%.

The remaining candidates collectively secure 14% of the votes. Among NPP supporters specifically, Dr. Bawumia’s lead is even more pronounced, with 57% backing him, compared to 22% for Kennedy Agyapong and 11% for Dr. Osei Adutwum.

These findings highlight Dr. Bawumia’s strong influence within the party and suggest a continuity of support beyond the 2024 elections.

His leadership as Vice President and current flagbearer appears to have solidified his position as the preferred choice among party members looking ahead to the next election cycle.

Gyakye Quayson acquitted and discharged by High Court

0

James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, has been acquitted and discharged by the High Court after facing charges related to his dual citizenship status.

The decision, which was handed down on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, follows a legal battle that centered around allegations that Quayson held dual citizenship when he filed to contest in the 2020 parliamentary elections, a move which the prosecution argued violated the Constitution of Ghana.

Quayson, who had previously denied the charges and maintained that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship before filing his candidacy, expressed relief after the ruling.

The Assin North MP was discharged after the court delivered a ruling on the submission of no case.

The acquittal and discharge by the High Court have put an end to the legal uncertainties surrounding Quayson’s parliamentary seat, allowing him to continue with his duties as a Member of Parliament without further hindrance.

Gyakye Quayson acquitted and discharged after 3-year legal battle over perjury, other charges

0

The criminal jurisdiction of the Accra High Court presided over by Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh has acquitted and discharged the embattled Member of Parliament for Assin North in the Central Region, Gyakye Quayson, after three years of a legal battle over a host of charges, including perjury.

The MP, who declined an offer by the new Attorney General to discontinue the 2022 lawsuit against him, walks a free man today because, in the view of the judge, the prosecution failed to provide enough evidence against him.

Gyakie Quayson, who re-contested and won the Assin North parliamentary seat after his name was expunged from the house of legislature in 2023 following a Supreme court decision that discredited him from contesting the 2020 elections, had until today been in court fighting off charges of deceit of public officer, forgery of passport or travel certificates, knowingly making a false declaration, and perjury and false declaration for office.

The MP would have been compelled to open his defence if the prosecution had provided enough evidence to support the charges.

This case was part of the substantive case brought against him as a dual citizenship holder who went ahead to contest an election to be an MP without denouncing his citizenship on time as the constitution requires.

Speaking to JoyNews after the ruling, Mr Quayson described the acquittal as a victory for justice and for his constituents.

“This is justice for Assin North, and justice for Ghana. This is justice for everybody,” he said.

He praised lady Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh for her fairness, stating,

“They were trying to prosecute me but this is a court of law. There is a difference between prosecution and persecution. I am very proud of our lady Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh. I was going to tell her in the courtroom but the rules don’t allow that. She is a very decent human being, more blessings for her,” he said.

Mr Quayson also insisted the case was politically motivated, saying attempts were made to convict him with “falsified documents,” but he remained confident throughout.

“When you are not wrong, there’s nothing you should be worried about. No matter where you put the person, they will bounce back,” he said.

SEC to boost Ghana’s venture capital and investment climate

0

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is developing a regulatory framework for digital assets and derivatives as part of a broader plan to enhance the country’s investment climate.

This initiative aims to create a secure environment for local and international investors and increase participation in Ghana’s capital markets.

Director General of SEC, Dr. James Klutse Avedzi, outlined the efforts during a recent Pension Industry Leaders’ Dialogue, organised by the Ghana Venture Capital and Equity Association (GVCA), Venture Capital Trust Fund (VCTF) and Impact Investing Ghana.

He emphasised SEC’s focus on diversifying investment products and improving liquidity to stimulate market activity.

“We’re working to improve the diversity of investment products and liquidity in securities markets to enhance investor participation,” Mr. Klutse Avedzi stated, adding that the framework for digital assets and derivatives would help mobilize local capital.

This move to regulate digital assets and derivatives comes as part of the SEC’s larger strategy to position Ghana as an attractive investment hub in Africa, offering diversified and secure investment options.

The Chief Executive of the Ghana Venture Capital and Equity Association (GVCA), Amma Gyampo, stressed the importance of supporting Ghana’s venture capital (VC) and private equity (PE) industries as essential part of financing and supporting the long-term success of the 24-Hour Economy.

“GVCA is a private-sector member-based industry association for Venture Capital and Private Equity investors, advisors and fund managers. This year, GVCA will be focused on taking the necessary steps required to drive change and assist members – institutional investors and professionals from banking, insurance, pensions, trustee and asset management backgrounds. We provide exclusive opportunities for continuous professional development, co-investment, risk management, policy and regulatory advocacy support to our Members”.

“Our primary goals are to lower the barriers in the way of private equity, venture capital and access to SME growth finance, as well as domestic capital mobilisation”, she said.

Amma Gyampo also highlighted GVCA’s renewed commitment to driving regulatory reform in collaboration with key stakeholders, including the SEC, National Pension Regulatory Authority (NPRA), Ministry of Finance, and Venture Capital Trust Fund (VCTF), with a focus on formal policy reviews that address practical industry bottlenecks.

General Manager of Venture Capital and Trust Fund, VCTF Percival Ampomah, reiterated the government’s support for private sector investment, highlighting the significance of VCTF’s strategic support for GVCA to enable local investments.

VCTF, the government-backed fund of funds, continues to support Ghana’s entrepreneurial ecosystem through the funding of local equity funds. To date, VCTF has anchored 14 venture capital funds, including Zinari Capital, a gender-focused fund manager

Meanwhile the GVCA has launched its upcoming 4th annual conference which is poised to unlock local institutional investor capital and position Ghana as a hub for Africa’s venture capital and private equity investment industry by fostering transformative policy reforms, strategic partnerships, and actionable solutions that will drive Ghana’s national development through growth-stage startup and mid-sized business financing.

All structures on waterways will ‘go down’ – NADMO boss

0

Major Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon (rtd), Director-General of NADMO Major Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon (rtd), Director-General of NADMO

The Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Maj Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon (rtd), has reiterated the planned demolition of properties sitting on waterways in urban settlements.

He indicated that for the greater good of urban cities settlers, all structures that are obstructing the free flow of water bodies must be demolished to curb perennial flooding.

He made this statement during an interview on Citi FM on April 7, 2025.

He, however, gave assurance that the planned demolition exercise will be guided by expert advice.

“It’s obvious that to solve a problem, there must be some discomfort to ensure that the rest of us are safe. It is obvious that some structures will have to be pulled down, and people filling waterlogged areas to erect structures will be stopped to enable us dredge the areas to restore them to their original state,” he stated.

He lamented that the ecosystem is disturbed and if drastic measures are not taken immediately, it will cause floods that could engulf certain parts of cities across the country.

“The ecosystem is disturbed. If we do not restore the vegetation, it means that the people in this system will suffer; and that include me and you. So, there will be dredging and demolitions. We have to do it if we want to curb the flooding that we envisage with the imminent rainfalls,” he said.

Responding to the scope of the demolition, he said; “First of all, the focus of the demolition is not only in Accra, but all urban settlements. But specifically, we see a serious problem in Accra that is why the discussion appears to be centered only on Accra.”

He added that if it’s possible to spare some structures in densely populated areas, they would consider it based on the advice of experts on the demolition team.

“We don’t do demolition from the layman’s perspective. We have engineers, technocrats and experts who are part of this team. They will advice on where structures must be pulled down. Where there is a possibility to redirect the course of the water; why not, we are human beings and don’t aim to unnecessarily cause discomfort to anybody. Unfortunately, where it is absolutely impossible to redirect watercourse, marked structures must go down, and we will ensure that the demolition is done,” he said.

Not a single pesewa will be paid to contractors without an audit – Finance minister

0

Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, Auditor-General

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has noted that no contractor will be paid without a proper audit by the Office of the Auditor General.

According to him, the government owes over GH¢67 billion in arrears across 23 ministries to contractors.

He made the comment when he met with Chief Directors and senior officials of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

The minister emphasized the need to uphold transparency and accountability in the handling of arrears owed by the government.

He said: “As I pledged to Parliament, no payment will be made until a full audit is completed. To this end, I directed all Chief Directors to work with the Auditor-General, ensuring he has everything he needs to carry out a comprehensive audit.

“The Auditor-General has been given enough time to complete this process. During this time, I ask for full cooperation and complete disclosure. Nothing must be withheld. Not a single pesewa will be paid without the Auditor-General’s affirmative endorsement,” he noted.

Ato Forson said the Auditor-General has also been tasked with verifying which claims have valid commencement warrants.

“This is critical. I must also reiterate: I have not paid a single contractor, and I do not intend to do so until the audit is concluded. We owe it to the people of Ghana to manage public funds with the highest level of integrity and discipline. And that begins with clarity, audits, and responsible decision-making,” the minister said.

Asamoah Gyan saved me from a ‘spiritual’ injury

Former Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan Former Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan

Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Joseph “Bobby Short” Tagoe has disclosed that former Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan played a crucial role in helping him recover from a ‘spiritual’ injury.

Bobby Short, who was bedridden for almost six months, narrated that he suffered a leg injury and spent all his money seeking medical care, only to see no improvement.

He initially experienced a slight pain in his foot, which later became swollen, ultimately derailing his move to Mexico.

Speaking on the Gajio Podcast, he revealed that Asamoah Gyan, upon learning about his condition, took him to a spiritual healer, where he finally found relief.

“Asamoah Gyan then sent for me, and I was taken to a man who healed me,” he said.

When asked whether the condition was spiritual, he responded: “Yes. It wasn’t a matter for the hospital.”

He explained that the Black Stars’ all-time top scorer learned about his situation after Baffour Gyan gave a friend GH¢500 to deliver to him.

While narrating how he suffered the injury, he said: “I felt a cut in my leg but didn’t take it seriously. My visa (for a move to Mexico) and documents were ready, but I was experiencing pain in my leg. I went to a doctor for an injection because I had only a week left before traveling. But right after the injection, I felt like I had swallowed a bone. The next morning, I noticed three marks on my leg, and that was it.”

“I became bedridden and couldn’t do anything. Before I realised, I had sold all my assets, including my cars, just to afford treatment,” he added.

Bobby Short is a Ghana Premier League cult hero, known for his unique diminutive stature and his time at Hearts of Oak.

He is regarded as one of the best dribblers to have played in the GPL in recent years.

‘You’re not bigger than the TGMAs’

0

Entertainment pundit, MC Yaa Yeboah, has expressed disappointment in some Ghanaian musicians who have shown disinterest in the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

In a discussion on Peace FM, shared on X on April 8, 2025, MC Yaa Yeboah emphasised that no Ghanaian artiste is bigger than the awards scheme, which has been a staple in the industry for over 25 years.

She cautioned musicians who frequently make derogatory comments about the TGMAs to refrain from doing so.

“We’ve heard a lot of artistes saying they are bigger than the awards. Recently, Kwaku Smoke shared something similar on Twitter about how he doesn’t follow the awards. I want every other artiste to understand that you are not bigger than the Ghana Music Awards,” she stated.

Yaa Yeboah also urged musicians to actively engage with the award scheme in order to be appreciated for their hard work.

“I start to laugh when I see people attacking Stonebwoy because he tries to be involved in discussions surrounding these awards. Which person wouldn’t want to be appreciated for their hard work?” she quizzed.

“The fact that you’ve put in the work means you deserve to be awarded. Artistes should understand that the awards are important. They should involve themselves in the scheme so they can also be appreciated,” she added.

Over the years, several Ghanaian musicians, including Shatta Wale, Kwaw Kese, among others, have publicly downplayed the importance of the Ghana Music Awards.

It’s populist; rescind before Ghana is destroyed – Prof. Aning on transfer of police commanders

0

Security expert Professor Kwasi Aning has criticised the directive to transfer all police commanders stationed in mining communities, warning that the policy—particularly its handling of foreign nationals involved in galamsey—could ultimately destroy the country.

Speaking on Joy News’ , he described the Interior Minister’s decision as “populist,” “unthoughtful,” and “a disgrace,” arguing that it fails to address the root causes of illegal mining and sends a dangerous message to transnational criminal elements.

“I have absolutely no sympathy,” he said.
“I detest being an independent Ghanaian in Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana and being treated like a second-class citizen. And let me appeal to the President directly; Mr. President, rescind this policy before this country is destroyed.”

The policy, announced by Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, directs the Inspector General of Police to immediately transfer all regional, divisional, and district police commanders who have served long terms in mining areas without making significant progress in the fight against illegal mining.

In a further controversial move, the Minister stated that foreign nationals caught engaging in galamsey would be deported without prosecution.

Prof. Aning condemned the deportation policy as ineffective and damaging to Ghana’s sovereignty and justice system.

“This is a policy that will serve as an attraction for even worse criminals to come,” he warned.
“They know we don’t have the capacity to prosecute them. They know we don’t have the political will to do what is right for the people of this country.”

He challenged the President to make his final term count, stating that the current approach falls short of the promises made in the State of the Nation Address.

“This is your legacy term—let it matter and let it count,” he implored.
“Your minister has demonstrated an unwillingness and a reluctance to hold the bull by the horns and resolve this crisis.”

While he acknowledged that changes in police deployment could be useful, Prof. Aning said they must be accompanied by proper accountability and resources to be effective.

“I think it’s useful that we give the police officers performance indicators,” he noted.
“But we need to give them the resources, Your Excellency, so that the three months can be tested and their results checked.”

He criticised what he sees as the broader implications of the policy.

“We cannot have a two-tier law. We cannot have a two-tier implementation process. The manner in which this has been presented to the Republic of Ghana is shameful. It is not thought through. It is populist, and it is a disgrace.”

Prof. Aning concluded with a passionate appeal to President Mahama to uphold his environmental and governance commitments.

“Let this be your legacy term by reclaiming the environment, as you promised the people of Ghana in your State of the Nation Address. We cannot afford more half-measures.”

GRA Exceeds Revenue Target In 1st Quarter

0

Anthony Akwasi Sarpong

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has exceeded its revenue target of GH¢36 billion recording GH¢41 billion in the first quarter of 2025.

Acting Commissioner-General of the GRA, Anthony Akwasi Sarpong, who disclosed this during a working visit to the Tax Services Centre in the Ashanti  Region said GRA is targeting to generate about GH¢220 billion in revenue for the country by the end of 2025.

He also stated that the Authority has as part of efforts to increase revenue is adopting measures aimed at widening the tax base to increase more informal businesses in the Ashanti region.

“Our first quarter performance has been impressive with an improved generation from the Ashanti region and we have to build upon that to meet our set target for the year. We have been given a GH¢220 billion target in the budget and we’re very positive about crossing this target.

“For the first quarter [2025], the budget set was GH¢36 billion, but I’m happy to announce that we have raked in GH¢41 billion by the end of the quarter and this is an improvement,” he noted.

He said the visits also forms part of efforts by GRA management to familiarise themselves with the operations of the various collection points in the Ashanti Region.

According to Mr. Akwasi Sarpong, GRA exceeded its revenue target by generating GH₵153.5 billion in 2024 adding that the region also exceeded its revenue targets at both the customs and domestic collection units in 2024.

Supreme Court adjourns indefinitely injunction application against removal of Chief Justice

0

The Supreme Court has adjourned indefinitely an application seeking to halt the process that could lead to the removal of the Chief Justice.

The application, filed by the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, is seeking an injunction to stop the entire impeachment process until the determination of his writ challenging the constitutionality of the proceedings.

When the case was called today, a five-member panel of the apex court, presided over by Justice Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, announced that it had to adjourn the matter due to a request from the Office of the Attorney-General.

Justice Mensa-Bonsu explained that the Attorney-General had written to the Chief Justice, requesting an adjournment of all cases involving the Attorney-General’s outfit for the week, owing to a conference of State Attorneys currently ongoing in Accra.

Although the panel was already aware of the situation, a State Attorney, Reginald Odoi, appeared in court to further convey the request from the Attorney-General.

Mr Odoi stated that he had been instructed by the Attorney-General to inform the court in person out of respect for the highest court of the land.

However, counsel for the applicant, Godfred Yeboah Dame, a former Attorney-General, questioned why the Attorney-General or his deputy would miss what he described as “an important constitutional case” due to a conference of state attorneys.

“It is quite odd that a conference of state attorneys should lead to the adjournment of such an important case,” he said.

He urged the court to adjourn the matter to the earliest possible date, preferably Monday. However, the court said it had no power to set a new date, as the request from the Attorney-General was directed to the Chief Justice.

“The case will go back to the Chief Justice for her to fix a new date since it was a request to her office. Case is therefore adjourned sine die,” Justice Mensa-Bonsu ruled.

Ghana Bauxite Company targets 6m tonnes production this year

0

The Ghana Bauxite Company Limited (GBCL) has set an ambitious target of producing six million tonnes of bauxite by the end of 2025.

To achieve the goal, the company has invested $122.97 million to upgrade its infrastructure and improve operational efficiencies.

The investment has enabled GBCL to acquire a robust fleet of equipment, including surface miners, haulage trucks, dump trucks, excavators and retool existing plant and machinery.

The General Manager of GBCL, Alexander Gyedu, at a press briefing at Awaso in the Western North Region, said the company’s production volumes had already seen a significant boost.

He added that the use of  surface mining, drill and blast methods had increased production from 1.3 million tonnes per annum to about 1.8 million tonnes in 2024, from 600,000 tonnes in 2022.

Mr Gyedu attributed the historic production milestone to Ofori-Poku Company Limited’s (OPCL) takeover of Bosai Group in 2022.

Background

OPCL’s acquisition of GBCL has brought about significant changes, including the replacement of old and dilapidated equipment.

As of February 2025, OPCL had acquired 42 new earth-moving equipment, 52 new dump trucks, 16 new utilities, one surface miner and 35 new light-duty vehicles, among others.

The company is expecting the delivery of a second surface miner by the end of June this year.

The Haulage Department of the company has also seen significant improvements, with OPCL adding 161 fleet of nine-axle trucks since taking over in 2022.

This has led to a substantial increase in haulage operations, from around 600,000 tonnes in 2022 to about 1.7 million tonnes of bauxite in 2024.

As GBCL works towards achieving its production target of six million tonnes by the end of 2025, Mr Gyedu said the company remained committed to environmentally responsible mining practices.

The General Manager said the acquisition of new equipment and technology was expected to reduce the company’s environmental footprint.

“GBC also plans to expand its operations and increase production to have a positive impact on the local economy,” Mr Gyedu stated, adding that the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and environmentally responsible mining practices was a testament to its dedication to sustainable development.

Journey

In 2022, Isaac Ofori Poku (IOP), a Ghanaian businessman, acquired approximately 80 per cent shares of GBCL, located at Awaso in the Western North Region, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s mining industry.

This acquisition means a local entity now owns majority shares in the company, paving the way for a new era of success.

Under IOP’s leadership, GBCL has undergone a remarkable transformation, aligning with one of the major visions of Mr Ofori Poku to reduce the unemployment rate in the catchment areas and Ghana at large.

Consequently, the company has increased its contract staff strength from 465 to 1,061 employees, with 976 males and 85 females.

This significant increase in employment opportunities has had a positive impact on the local economy.

The results are impressive. Last year, GBCL, Awaso, exported a record 1.8 million tonnes of bauxite ore to China and other parts of the world.

“The success of Ghana Bauxite Company Limited under IOP’s leadership is a shining example of what can be achieved when local businesses are given the opportunity to thrive.

With a dynamic and energetic management team, supported by a committed workforce, the company is poised for even greater success in the future,” Mr Gyedu stated.

Renowned investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni Renowned investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni

Renowned investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni has criticised the government’s handling of foreign nationals involved in illegal mining activities, otherwise referred to as galamsey.

In a post shared on his X page on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, he recounted a request he made in 2021 to the prisons service on data on inmates in prisons across the country.

“In 2021, my team applied to the Ghana Prisons Service and obtained data on inmates in Ghana’s prisons. The data included the nationality of the prisoners serving in Ghana’s prisons. It revealed that only one Chinese national was in our prisons. His offence was not named. (Perhaps he committed a crime against a private person, even his fellow Chinese here).

“This was shocking because years and months preceding our request for the information, hundreds of Chinese had been arrested for illegal mining in Ghana,” he narrated.

He further disclosed that while some foreign nationals from African countries had been imprisoned for galamsey activities, the story was, however, different with Chinese nationals.

“At the same time, hundreds of Ghanaians, Nigerians, Burkinabes, and other Africans were serving jail terms for illegal mining. In one instance reported in the news, the judge ordered that after serving their jail terms for illegal mining, the Nigerians jailed 20 years each should be deported,” he noted.

He criticised the seemingly double standards in the treatment of foreign nationals involved in galamsey.

“Even though the government uses the term foreigners, Nigerians who commit crimes in Ghana are often arrested and prosecuted. But the Chinese who engaged in the destruction of our forests and water bodies and flout our laws are allowed to go back home and enjoy the wealth they make here.

“If this happened elsewhere, we would call it racism, but this is happening in Ghana. If you jail a Nigerian for 20 years for illegal mining and ask his Chinese counterpart to go home in peace, what should we call that?” he asked.

He continued,”If Ghanaians did this in China, would they get away with it, especially when the government has confirmed that illegal mining is a threat to our national security? Mr President, is this how you swore to defend this country?”

His remarks come in the wake of comments made by the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntanka, that the government is implementing a new policy to protect the country’s environment and shield citizens from fraud perpetrated by foreigners operating in Ghana.

He explained that under the new policy, foreigners arrested for engaging in either galamsey or cyber fraud would not face prosecution in the country but would be repatriated.

Empress Gifty, whose activities in the music industry have probably inspired many musicians as well as music fans, said the new album with Kuami Eugene will make an impact.

She has gradually built a huge fan base that is quickly establishing her as one of the industry’s finest. Her collaboration with Kuami Eugene is sure to hit the right note.

Having achieved incredible feats in the local gospel music industry, Empress Gifty is credited with hit songs such as ‘Aseda’, ‘Yen To Nkyea’, ‘Wafira Me Ntoma’, ‘Jesus You Be Too Much’ among others.

Hostile political atmosphere of Volta, a thing of the past – Dr Letsa

0

By Edward Williams

Ho, April 09, GNA – Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, the immediate past Volta Regional Minister, has described the hostile political atmosphere of the Region as a thing of the past.

He said people were getting used to others expressing interest in different political views and alliances.

Dr Letsa said the political environment of the Region was much better while there was more tolerance now and more respect was accorded people’s opinion which was improvement.

Dr Letsa, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said in the past, everyone in the Region expected indigenes to affiliate and be interested in the ideologies and practices of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He said in the past, people could be pelted with stones, adding that things had taken a turn that when members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) visit the Region, they became amazed because they were received warmly without attacks.

“The other day, I went somewhere I saw people in NPP t-shirts and there was no fuss. The hostility has died down completely,” Dr Letsa said.

Dr Letsa said one of the greatest things he was happy about is that “at least” he left the Region in a very peaceful state because when he took office in 2017, the Alavanyo-Nkonya conflict was “hell” for him.

He said it was a longstanding conflict that gave him sleepless nights adding that “you hardly go to bed and sleep because you are always scared that you will be called that some people have been killed.”

The former Volta Regional Minister said there had to be a deliberate effort with the support of National Security, the president, the locals, the Peace Council and the opinion leaders from Nkonya and Alavanyo to bring the conflict under control.

He said the Trans-Volta Togoland successionist group’s disturbances was another serious in incident that was quite embarrassing, and they had to work on it adding that the collaboration was great from the Regional House of Chiefs and the political parties.

He said: “Thankfully, they (successionist group) did not have support among the citizens of the Volta Region. They did not have it at all. Most people were not

interested in what they were doing. So, they helped us to bring that one also under control”.

Dr Letsa noted that the issue of the eastern border was also critical in view of the terrorism, threats of terrorism in the sub-region because there were reports of terrorist activity in Togo which compelled us to work very hard to make sure the Region was secured and peaceful and the security agencies were doing a good job.

He said putting the Region on the map with regards to tourism was another success with the support of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and tourism ambassadors with the Volta Fair initiative.

Dr Letsa said the 2021 edition of the Volta Trade and Investment Fair was a successful run by the Volta Regional Coordinating Council.

“It’s the biggest we have experienced so far. The people did not even want us to close,” he said.

He said aside the fair boosting the local economy, it brought a lot of guests to the Region while tourists visit the Region almost every weekend to explore its beauty.

The former Minister said during his era, the Region won back the best (Regional Coordination Council (RCC) in the country for four consecutive times, spanning 2021 and 2024.

AFAG calls for bipartisan parliamentary probe into drug trafficking claims

0

The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has called for an independent, bipartisan investigation by Parliament into serious allegations involving two foreign aircraft suspected of trafficking illicit drugs and cash into Ghana.

The two aircraft at the centre of the controversy are AirMed’s flight N823AM, an air ambulance, and Cavok Air’s Antonov An-12B cargo plane.

Both planes reportedly arrived from Gran Canaria, Spain, and remained at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for unusually long periods, raising suspicions.

AirMed’s flight landed on March 20, 2025, and stayed for five days, despite not transporting any patients. Meanwhile, Cavok Air’s Antonov An-12B arrived on March 12, 2025, and stayed for 13 days, with both planes departing on March 25, 2025, for the same destination.

These suspicious circumstances, alongside claims of cocaine and cash smuggling, have sparked alarm among officials, including Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament.

While government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has dismissed the allegations, citing mechanical issues and customs delays, AFAG in its statement noted that the ongoing political back-and-forth between the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is not addressing the core issue: the truth.

“Ghanaians are demanding answers, not political debates. The silence from key institutions like the Ghana Airport Company, Civil Aviation Authority, and national security agencies is deeply disturbing. The public deserves transparency,” part of the statement read.

Given the seriousness of the allegations, AFAG has called on President John Dramani Mahama to urgently confer with the Speaker of Parliament to reconvene Parliament and address the issue decisively.

Below is the full statement from AFAG

AIRMED COCAINE SCANDAL; BIPARTISAN PARLIAMENTARY PROBE NEEDED – AFAG

The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) is calling for an independent, bipartisan parliamentary investigation into troubling allegations involving two foreign aircraft suspected of transporting illicit drugs and cash into Ghana.

The aircraft in question are AirMed flight N823AM, an air ambulance, and Cavok Air’s Antonov An-12B cargo plane. Both planes arrived from Gran Canaria, Spain, and remained at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for extended periods under suspicious circumstances.

AirMed’s aircraft reportedly landed on March 20, 2025, and stayed for five days without transporting any patients. Meanwhile, Cavok Air’s Antonov An-12B arrived earlier on March 12 and remained in Ghana for thirteen days, with both planes allegedly departing on the same day, March 25, 2025, to the same destination. These coincidences, paired with claims of cocaine and cash smuggling, have raised serious concerns by Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament.

While government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has dismissed the allegations, citing mechanical issues and customs delays, AFAG believes this back-and-forth between the ruling NDC and opposition NPP is failing to address the core issue: the truth.

Ghanaians are demanding answers, not political debates. The silence from key institutions like the Ghana Airport Company, Civil Aviation Authority, and national security agencies is deeply disturbing. The public deserves transparency.

AFAG has outlined five compelling reasons why Parliament must initiate a bipartisan investigation:

National Security Risk – Allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering, if true, threaten the security and international standing of Ghana.

Lack of Transparency – There is no public record of cargo manifests, clearance documentation, or official explanations for the planes’ extended stays.

Repetitive Patterns – Ghana has a history of drug-related aviation scandals, including the Nayele Ametefeh case and the 2023 Brussels bust.

Rule of Law & Accountability – Parliament must fulfill its oversight role. Any complicity or negligence by officials must be uncovered and addressed.

International Reputation – As a signatory to key anti-drug treaties, Ghana must show commitment to justice to preserve global partnerships and donor confidence.

RESOLUTION

In light of the seriousness of the allegations, AFAG calls on President John Mahama to, as a matter of urgency, confer with the Speaker of Parliament to reconvene Parliament immediately to address the matter decisively. The gravity of these accusations demands swift legislative oversight and action.

AFAG is urging Parliament to act swiftly, rise above partisan interests, and restore public trust through a credible and transparent probe.

God bless our homeland, Ghana!

High Court acquits Assin North MP Gyakye Quayson of criminal charges

Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson

A High Court in Accra has acquitted the Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, of the criminal charges levelled against him by the state.

According to a post shared on X by journalist Kwaku Asante, the court ruled that the case against the Assin North MP had no merit.

The ruling of the court comes after the MP refused an offer by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, for the criminal charges levelled against him by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government to be discontinued.

Gyakye Quayson maintained that he wanted the case to be completed by the court so that he could clear his name.

“The High Court has acquitted MP for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, of the charges levelled against him by the then NPP government.

“Gyakye Quayson refused an offer for his trial to be discontinued by the new AG. The judge ruled that the State’s case against him was meritless,” parts of the post read.

The Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, who was ousted from Parliament in 2023 after the Supreme Court of Ghana ruled that he was ineligible to contest in the 2020 parliamentary election, still has a criminal case against him.

He was accused by the Office of the Attorney General, under Godfred Dame, of deceiving public officers to acquire state documents to contest in the 2020 parliamentary election.

On February 12, 2022, the state charged James Gyakye Quayson with five counts; deceit of a public officer, forgery of a passport, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration.

The last hearing of this case was when the Supreme Court threw out Gyakye Quayson’s application for the court to strike out the High Court ruling that his criminal trial should be heard daily.

Gyakye Quayson, through his lawyers, filed a certiorari application, arguing that the trial judge had erred in denying their request to direct the Attorney General’s Office to provide additional disclosures.

The lawyers stated that the High Court judge erred in allowing the application for the trial to be heard daily. They added that the judge took his decision based on a document that lacked an accompanying affidavit.

But the Supreme Court panel that sat on the case ruled that it lacked merit.

Ghana’s poverty is self-inflicted despite vast wealth of natural resources – Dr Kwakye

0

Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), John Kwabena Kwakye, has expressed concern over the state of Ghana’s economy despite the country being endowed with abundant natural resources.

According to him, Ghana should not be poverty-stricken, considering the wealth it possesses in various forms of natural resources.

He urged the country’s leaders to emulate other African nations in order to lift Ghana out of what he described as self-inflicted poverty.

In a post on his X page on April 9, 2025, he wrote, “When we have vast natural resource wealth, we can’t talk about a lack of resources to develop Ghana. Our poverty is self-inflicted. Our leaders must take control of our natural resource wealth—a la Rwanda, Botswana, Eritrea, Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali—to break our poverty chains.”

Ghana is blessed with a variety of mineral and natural resources, including gold, bauxite, copper, diamonds, aluminum, large forest reserves, and salt, among others.

However, the country continues to struggle with massive debts and an over-reliance on raw exports.

Analysts attribute this situation to the mismanagement of the economy by successive political administrations.

They emphasise the need for a paradigm shift and a revolutionary approach to reset the economy and harness the nation’s resources to build a better Ghana.

Poor communication deepen public mistrust —Elvis Darko

0

Editor of Newscenta Newspaper, Elvis Darko, has warned that poor communication from the Presidency and government officials could worsen public perception and escalate tension surrounding the controversy over suspicious aircraft landings at the Kotoka International Airport.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, April 9, Elvis Darko advised President John Dramani Mahama to urgently seek the assistance of experienced communication strategists to manage the issue.

According to him, failure to coordinate and deliver clear, consistent messaging may entangle the President and his administration in unnecessary controversy.

“It appears that if the President doesn’t act quickly, he is going to embroil himself and the government into so many needless communication situations. So my advice to him is that he should get some backroom experts in communication to come in and help,” he said.

Darko stressed that the matter can only be effectively addressed if communication is handled properly.

“The issue will be better settled when the communication is properly taken care of. As I have said, if they do not take care of communication, and they continue to issue statements that people will question and point hands to, they will even create more problems to the extent that, by the time the committee even finishes its work, the issue would have been resolved in the public that the government is guilty or something,” he warned.

His remarks follow recent public backlash over a Facebook post by government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who on Sunday, April 6, explained that the Air Med aircraft in question had landed due to damaged tyres, which required engineers to be flown in to fix it, accounting for its three-day stay at the airport.

The explanation was in response to allegations by Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, who on April 1 claimed that the aircraft was linked to drug trafficking and money laundering.

Elvis Darko pointed out that inconsistent messaging and lack of clarity are only fuelling public confusion and giving the opposition more room to attack.

“The communication in this instance must be very sharp, because the more you communicate and there are gaps, the more the opposition too will come at you and the more the public will be confused and say who is telling the truth,” he noted.

He added that when communication is clear and credible, public apprehension begins to reduce, and that can lead to the success of the investigation.

“But when your comments and communication rather increase the tempo and there are responses to it, you will keep increasing the situation and at the end of the day, if we are not careful, the issue will lead to the end of the year,” he concluded.

Opioids abuse destroying nation’s youth – Renowned psychiatrist sounds alarm

0

A former Chief Psychiatrist, Prof. J.B. Asare, has raised concern about the alarming abuse of opioids among the youth, saying that failure to crack down on the influx of the substance can lead to many wasted lives in some years to come.

He, therefore, stressed the need to step up surveillance at the country’s borders in order to prevent the smuggling of the drugs into the country.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Graphic, Dr Asare urged the entire society, comprising religious bodies, politicians, educational institutions, civil society organisations, among others, to wage a relentless war against the abuse of opioids by the youth.

Past

“In the past, our children were very much afraid of the opioids because of the physical effect that they have after using it.

“But I don’t know why now it’s resurfacing. No, the opiates are very dangerous; they destroy them more,” he warned, adding that, “When the harm is done, it’s not easy correcting it”.

He lauded the government’s campaign to deal with drug abuse among the youth in the country, and advised that every effort must be undertaken to enhance the initiative, which should not be a nine-day wonder.

Prof. Asare said the campaign should be an ongoing activity in the communities, particularly in areas where the abuse of opioids, commonly called red, was rampant.

He said he was sure that the security agencies knew where the drugs were used most frequently, and that the youth thought that they were recreational drugs to amuse themselves.

In a similar vein, he said frantic efforts should be made to identify the areas in order to educate the youth.

Right direction

“What government is doing is in the right direction, but then they need to intensify the efforts,” he said, adding that churches, companies, individuals and groups could come on board to help since persons charged with doing such job were not enough.

For instance, Prof. Asare said if churches preached against drugs and other substance abuse to let the youth know about their effects, it would go a long way to help sensitise them to the dangers associated with such drugs.

He said once the youth got hooked on the abuse of opioids, “we will have to spend money helping them to come back to normalcy.”

“It’s not easy. When the harm is done, it’s not easy correcting it. You know, it’s not easy at all,” he emphasised, adding that “It takes a long time before the dependency efforts are taken care of.

“If we’re able to do it and prevent them from using it, that is far better. But if you don’t do anything and you stay on this end you’re going to have a lot of wastage,” he said.

The youth, he said, were assets to the country, and as such there was the need to ensure that they were protected from drug abuse.

Campaign

The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment has launched a national youth anti-drug initiative aimed at combating the high rate of substance abuse among young people.

Dubbed “Ghana Against Drugs – Red Means Stop”, the campaign seeks to raise public awareness of the dangers of drug abuse, engage policymakers in strengthening regulations and implement proactive measures to curb the availability and misuse of these substances.

It also aims to empower young people with the knowledge and support to make informed choices and champion drug-free lifestyles.

Substance abuse, particularly the misuse of opioids, has become a growing national concern, with the recent spread of the drug known only as “Red” raising eyebrows.

Over the past weeks, social media has been inundated with disturbing videos of young people allegedly under the influence of “Red” — staggering, slurring their speech, struggling to stay conscious, incoherent or completely unresponsive.

The viral posts with the hashtag “Wonim Red” heightened public concern and prompted urgent calls for action.

Advice

Prof. Asare, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority, said as the country grew and developed, many changes were ongoing with people aspiring to do a lot of things, hence the youth could not be left out.

“There are a lot of grounds that our youth can pass through to be able to acquire some skills that will be of help to them and society, their families and all that. But those who are not getting jobs shouldn’t lose hope.

“As Ghana is being reset now, we’re going to see a lot of jobs being created,” he said.

He said it was the youth who were going to benefit more from the resetting of Ghana agenda, and so they should not lose hope.

“They should not look for quick solutions for happiness. If you have problems, come to the right source and be counselled. Drugs cannot solve any of your problems.

“If you have a problem, just face it. See the right people to advise you, counsel you and help you to be able to manage your affairs, drugs certainly will rather destroy you rather than help you to achieve anything in life,” he said.

Opioids destroyed

The Ministry of Health and the Foods and Drugs Authority last Friday destroyed a large consignment of opioids intercepted at the Tema Port last month.

A total of 230 cartons of opioids were destroyed in last Friday’s exercise, which was undertaken at a private incinerator at Katamanso, near Ashaiman, in the Greater Accra Region.

They included 128 cartons of tafradol, 92 cartons of timaking tapentadol and 10 cartons of rahol tapentadol.

Ghana, Czech Republic sign key agreements, Mahama calls for business ties

0

Ghana and the Czech Republic have solidified their long-standing relationship with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Political Consultation and an Air Transport Agreement.

The agreements were formalised during a state visit by Czech Republic President Petr Pavel, who held bilateral talks with President John Mahama at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, April 9th.

Following their closed-door discussions, President Mahama briefed the media, emphasizing the historical ties between the two nations, which date back to 1961.

“In our bilateral discussions, we acknowledged the cordial and long-standing relations that have existed between Ghana and the Czech Republic,” he stated.

“We also signed a MoU on political consultation and a bilateral Air services agreement (Air Transport Agreement).

President Mahama highlighted the potential for increased cooperation across various sectors and urged the Ghanaian and Czech business communities to explore the diverse opportunities within the Ghanaian economy.

He specifically called on the private sectors of both countries to “come together to explore possible avenues for cooperation.”

President Mahama also expressed gratitude to the Czech government for their support in Ghana’s health sector, acknowledging the construction of health facilities and the provision of medical experts.

Additionally, both leaders agreed to revisit the completion of 50 ongoing bridge projects and initiate the construction of an additional 100 bridges.

President Mahama expressed his hope that “the implementation of these MoUs will reinvigorate and spearhead cooperation in various sectors between our two countries.”

The agreements and discussions signal a renewed commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and the Czech Republic.

Police commanders in galamsey areas to be transferred

Deputy Minister of the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi play videoDeputy Minister of the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi

The Deputy Minister of the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has announced that the government is initiating a major overhaul of the police administration, particularly in areas that illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, are prevalent.

Speaking in a recent interview on JoyNews, he alleged that some police officers who were deployed under operations like Operation Vanguard have also ventured into illegal mining.

“We are going to transfer all the commanders that are in the mining areas. And there are good reasons to do that. What we realise is that we sent some of them on Operation Vanguard and some of them converted.

“They’ve gotten to know the people. They are so used to the people and sometimes even if they want to exact any punishment, because they’ve been living in the community for a very long time, they find it difficult. You know Ghanaian communities and how we live; we become like family,” he stated.

Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi further indicated that replacing the complicit police officers is a first step to reform the service.

“There is going to be a very comprehensive overhaul of the police administration in terms of where each and every one will be policing. So, that is going to be done.

“I believe that is the process in place and we are going to effect that very, very soon. The IGP was instructed; we expect him to act immediately,” he added.

Fees and charges not disclosed to borrowers will be null and void

The Bank of Ghana has reminded banks and all financial institutions of their requirement to disclose all charges and fees to a borrower in a loan agreement.

According to the central bank, failure to disclose such information to the borrower will result in the undisclosed charges and fees being null and void.

In its Financial Literacy on Responsible Borrowing, the central bank told borrowers to pay particular attention to the interest rate quoted

“In considering a loan offer, pay particular attention to the interest rate quoted. Look out for the Annual Percentage Rate (APR), which represents the total cost, including interest on an annual basis and fees and charges to be paid to the lender each year for the loan,” it noted.

The central bank further advised the public to always compare the APR of financial institutions in order to decide where to apply for your loan.

“Take note of all the fees and charges associated with loans, including upfront charges. Your financial service provider is required to fully disclose all fees and charges on the loan to you in the Loan Agreement.

“Fees and charges that are not disclosed to the borrower in the loan agreement will be considered null and void. The lender would be required to refund all such fees and charges already paid by the borrower and will be liable for sanctioning by the Bank of Ghana,” the Bank of Ghana explained.

‘Letting those who pose existential threats walk free is invitation to criminal networks’ – Prof Aning

0

Security analyst Prof. Kwesi Aning has criticised the decision to let those who pose existential threats to the state go unpunished will only embolden transnational criminal networks and undermine national security efforts.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, April 8, he criticised what he described as the state’s failure to enforce its laws, particularly in the fight against illegal mining and foreign-led criminal activity.

No single person can unite NPP, we must work together – Oppong Nkrumah

0

A former Minister for Works and Housing under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has stated that no single individual can unite the party.

Speaking on the JoyPrime‘s Prime Morning Show on Wednesday, Oppong Nkrumah underscored that the challenges facing the party require a concerted effort from all members, rather than an individual’s effort to bring the party together.

“I don’t think any single person can bring the party together, anybody going around saying he is going to bring the party together should stop saying it,” he said when he was asked what he makes of the ongoing disagreement between the party and Adwoa Safo, and the promise by the General Secretary to unite the party ahead of 2028 elections.

He emphasised the need for collaboration to rebuild the NPP in preparation for upcoming elections.

“All of us must understand that we have to collectively work together,” he said.

The MP added that there must be discipline among party folks regardless of their differences. “In politics, you don’t need to like one another or be friends to work together. We must understand that the success of political enterprise is our ability to come together and work together.”

He argued that a unified approach is essential for the NPP to remain competitive and strong in future elections.

“We have to heal wounds, we have to reform as a party,” he said.

No contract approvals without commencement authorisation – Ato Forson

0

In a bid to enforce fiscal discipline and curb financial recklessness in public administration, Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has declared that no government contract will be approved without prior commencement authorisation from the Ministry of Finance, effective April 3, 2025.

The announcement was made during a recent meeting with Chief Directors and senior officials from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), where Dr. Forson made it clear that the era of unchecked contract approvals has come to an end.

“You cannot award contracts without the express approval of the Ministry of Finance,” he stated firmly. “No commencement certificate, no procurement.”

The Minister explained that all government contracts must now receive commencement authorisation before proceeding.

Dr. Forson emphasized that this change is not merely administrative but a legal requirement under the Amended Public Financial Management Act, 2025. He warned that any violation of this directive would result in severe consequences.

“The Ministry of Finance will no longer take the fall for fiscal indiscipline,” he added.

Dr. Forson urged public officials to uphold the highest standards of integrity and patriotism in managing public funds.

“We are among the privileged few. We cannot continue to subject our people to hardship through poor governance and financial mismanagement,” he stated.

The Minister concluded by stressing that Ghana’s path to fiscal responsibility requires strict adherence to budget implementation processes, as well as transparency and accountability at all levels of government.

Ghana Bauxite Company targets 6m tonnes production by year-end

0

The Ghana Bauxite Company Limited (GBC) has invested a substantial US$122.97 million in upgrading its infrastructure and operational efficiencies, to meet its ambitious target of producing six million tonnes of bauxite by the end of the year.

Consequently, the company has acquired a robust fleet of equipment, including surface miners, haulage trucks, dump trucks, excavators, and retooling of existing plant and machinery.

In 2024, Ghana Bauxite Company Limited, Awaso, exported a record 1.8 million metric tonnes of bauxite ore to China and other parts of the world.

Work on going at the Bauxite company

The company is expecting the delivery of a second surface miner by the end of June 2025.

The General Manager of GBC, Mr Alexander Gyedu, in a press briefing at Awaso in the Western North Region, said the company’s production volumes had already seen a significant boost.

“As GBC works towards achieving its production target of 6 million tonnes by the end of 2025, the company remains committed to environmentally responsible mining practices. The acquisition of new equipment and technology is expected to reduce the company’s environmental footprint,” he explained.

“The use of both surface mining and drill and blast methods has increased production from 1.3 million tonnes per annum to about 1.8 million tonnes in 2024,” he added.

Mr Gyedu attributed this historic production milestone to Ofori- Poku Company Limited’s (OPCL) takeover from Bosai Group in 2022 that has brought about significant changes, including the replacement of old and dilapidated equipment.

As of February 2025, OPCL had acquired 42 new earth-moving equipment, 52 new dump trucks, 16 new utilities, one surface miner, and 35 new light-duty vehicles, among others.

The Haulage department has also seen significant improvements, with OPCL adding 161 fleet of 9-axle trucks since taking over in 2022, leading to a substantial increase in haulage operations, from around 600,000 tonnes in 2022 to about 1.7 million tonnes of bauxite in 2024.

GBC’s plans to expand its operations and increase production are expected to have a positive impact on the local economy.

The company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and environmentally responsible mining practices is a testament to its dedication to sustainable development.

It is recalled that in 2022, Isaac Ofori Poku (IOP), a visionary Ghanaian businessman, acquired approximately 80 per cent shares of Ghana Bauxite Company Limited at Awaso in the Western North Region, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s mining industry.

This acquisition transferred majority ownership of the company to a local entity, paving the way for a new era of success.

Under IOP’s leadership, Ghana Bauxite Company Limited has undergone a remarkable transformation. One of the major visions of Mr Ofori Poku was to reduce the unemployment rate in the catchment areas and Ghana at large.

As a result, the company had increased its contract staff strength from 465 to 1,061 employees, with 976 males and 85 females. This significant increase in employment opportunities has had a positive impact on the local economy.

In addition to creating jobs, IOP has also invested heavily in acquiring new and sophisticated equipment to boost production. The company has acquired 56 new equipment and 198 new trucks, including Sino trucks, RDT trucks, TX 400 dump trucks, and Howo 371 trucks. This significant investment has enabled the company to increase its production capacity and export more bauxite ore.

French Ambassador pledges continued support for women-owned businesses in Ghana

0

By Solomon Gumah

Tugu (N/R), April 09, GNA – Mr Jules-Armand Aniambossou, French Ambassador to Ghana has reaffirmed the French Government’s commitment to supporting women entrepreneurs in Ghana to expand their businesses and contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.

He said the commitment was grounded on President Emmanuel Macron’s vision of fostering renewed relations between France and the African continent geared towards poverty reduction and sustainable growth and development.

Mr Aniambossou said this on his working visit to a shea processing centre at Tugu, a farming community in the Tamale Metropolis on Tuesday.

The centre is an initiative of Advans Savings and Loans, a French-owned financial institution operating across Ghana to support marginalised communities and small businesses.

The shea processing initiative is being implemented in partnership with NGOs such as the Mastercard Foundation, Global Shea Alliance, and Sahel Agricultural Services amongst others.

Mr Aniambossou said France, through the French Development Agency, was leveraging key interventions to support various sectors of Ghana’s economy including agriculture, energy, the creative industry, and entrepreneurship to promote sustainable development.

He said, “Ghana is a very rich country with many opportunities for sustainable development, and France is ready to be the partner you can trust and rely on for mutual partnerships.”

Mr Guillaume Valence, Chief Executive Officer of Advans Savings and Loans in Tamale, said over the past three years, the shea processing initiative had benefitted approximately 8,000 women in the shea industry creating jobs and new business opportunities.

He added that 90 cooperatives had received training and capacity building support with 46 of them benefiting from financial assistance in 2024 alone amounting to nearly GHc4,000,000.

Mr Valence commended the women for their timely loan repayments noting that their commitment had encouraged the institution to expand its support to other women and to diversify into additional value chains within the agricultural sector.

Hajia Latifa Osman, a beneficiary of the initiative, expressed gratitude to Advans and its partners.

She said the support had enabled her to invest in her children’s education, adding “I have four children, and with the help of this initiative, I have been able to support their schooling. One of them recently graduated with a degree in Agricultural Science, and another is currently studying Architecture at the university.”

Madam Fuseina Andani, Leader of the Tugu Cooperative Unit said the project had exposed them to appreciate the benefits associated with shea processing.

She appealed for additional support in the form of tricycles, a warehouse, and a well-equipped shea processing centre to help boost production and efficiency.

Notable Ghanaians who have criticised government’s decision not to prosecute foreigners

Some of the notable Ghanaians who have slamed govt over decition to only deport foreign galamseyers Some of the notable Ghanaians who have slamed govt over decition to only deport foreign galamseyers

The supposed decision by the John Dramani Mahama government not to prosecute foreigners who are caught engaging in illegal mining (galamsey) has attracted a lot of criticisms from the public.

The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, recently announced the government’s decision to deport foreigners involved in illegal mining from the country as part of strict punitive measures to be enforced against them.

This announcement was corroborated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who said that foreigners caught engaging in illegal mining will face immediate deportation.

The remarks of the two men have led to a faction of the public concluding that the Cabinet of John Dramani Mahama has decided to ‘free’ foreigners who engage in galamsey, which is destroying the country’s natural resources, while it prosecutes Ghanaians caught engaging in the menace.

Here are some Ghanaians who have called out the government over its supposed decision:

Kwaku Azar:

Renowned US-based Ghanaian lawyer and scholar, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, widely known as Kwaku Azar, is one of the notable Ghanaians who has criticised the John Dramani Mahama government over its decision to deport foreigners who are caught engaging in galamsey in Ghana.

In a post shared on Facebook on April 7, 2025, Kwaku Azar said that the government must prosecute foreign illegal miners (galamseyers) who are caught engaging in the menace.

He made the point that the government must not only prosecute the foreign galamseyers, but must also force them to repair the damage they have caused to the country’s natural resources.

He added that deporting foreigners who engage in galamsey is tantamount to giving them a “free ride” to their home countries.

“Prosecute them, jail them, seize their assets, and compel them to restore the damaged land. Deportation is a free ride home,” the academic wrote.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor:

Lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor has also criticised the government over the move to deport foreign illegal miners.

In a post shared on X on April 8, 2025, he said that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) criticised the then New Patriotic Party (NPP) government when they made the same proposal, but they are now doing the same.

“In essence, our government – Cabinet, I presume – has resolved that for only galamsey we have as a matter of policy given foreigners complete immunity for violating our laws.

“Yet the NDC heavily criticised Osafo-Marfo when he made the same nonsense proposal. What at all has gold done to our senses as a people? Has galamsey cursed us and our elites?” he wrote.

Dr Cadman Atta Mills:

Dr Cadman Atta Mills, brother of the late former President John Evans Atta Mills, has also criticised the move.

He described the decision to only deport foreign illegal miners as unconscionable, saying, “No, prosecuting foreigners is insane!”

Dr Atta Mills made the point that illegal miners who are only deported will simply come back with new passports.

“Please prosecute them, let them serve their full sentences in our luxurious prisons and then deport them! If you simply deport them, they come back under new names and new passports,” he said.

Dr Kenneth Ashigbey:

Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, the Convener of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey, has also strongly criticised the government’s deportation policy.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, Dr Ashigbey expressed shock at the government’s decision to only deport foreigners who engage in galamsey.

He asserted that the decision to deport the foreign galamseyers is even illegal.

“If a minister looks in the face of the law, and unfortunately he was talking to the police who are also supposed to be enforcing the law, you would have hoped that somebody in that room should have told the minister that the policy is illegal,” he said.

Oppong Nkrumah’s fear-mongering on tariffs is misplaced

0

Financial analyst and economist Scott Bolshevik Financial analyst and economist Scott Bolshevik

A financial analyst and economist Scott Bolshevik has described the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee Kojo Oppong Nkrumah’s comment regarding potential tariffs on Ghana’s cocoa exports to the US as “fear-mongering”

According to him, these fears allayed by the Ofoase Ayirebi lawmaker are misplaced, stating that Ghana’s cocoa export share to the US is just 10 percent of the total cocoa exports, or about 4.5 percent of Ghana’s overall exports.

Oppong Nkrumah recently raised concerns about the impact of a possible 10% tariff on Ghana’s cocoa exports, claiming it would significantly harm the country’s economy.

This sparked widespread conversations, as experts argue that the lower tariff on Ghanaian cocoa gives it a competitive edge in the US market over its Ivorian counterpart, making his concerns overblown.

In a post shared on his X page, as sighted by GhanaWeb Business, Bolshevik pointed out that Ghana’s cocoa exports are far more heavily reliant on the Netherlands, which takes in 35% of the nation’s cocoa, suggesting that the potential tariff would have a less dramatic impact than suggested.

“Ghana exports cocoa to 8 nations. Netherlands leads with 35%, the US is just 11%. The US takes 4.5% of Ghana’s overall export” he posted.

Comparing Ghana to neighbouring Côte D’ivoire, Bolshevik said, Côte D’ivoire already faces a 21% tariff on its cocoa exports to the US at a much higher rate.

Despite this, Côte D’ivoire has continued to be a strong competitor in the global cocoa market, leaving room for Ghana to absorb a 10% tariff and remain competitive, particularly with its relatively smaller share in the U.S. market.

“Now Côte d’Ivoire has 21% tariffs on cocoa to the US, so a 10% tariff on Ghana cocoa exports is advantageous,” he pointed out.

He, however, asserted that Ghana’s cocoa industry is in a much better position to handle the risks of tariffs than previously suggested, labelling Oppong Nkrumah’s views as misleading.

The intriguing story of how JE Sarpong discovered Black Stars’ great Richard Olele Kingston

0

Veteran Ghanaian coach Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong has said he discovered former Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Kingston, commonly known as Olele when he was in dire need of a goalkeeper.

Sarpong, who was then the head coach of Great Olympics, explained that he was out of goalkeeping options, with both his first-choice and backup goalkeepers unavailable.

According to him, his first-choice goalkeeper, Mbale—who is now deceased—was out of town, while the backup goalkeeper had a wrist injury.

Speaking on GhanaWeb Sports Check, JE Sarpong said a man named Papa Emma recommended Olele, who was then playing for a Division 2 side, Rago FC, in Teshie.

“Olele’s rise to prominence started with me. He was playing for a team in Teshie called Rago. When I was coaching Great Olympics, I needed a goalkeeper because my first-choice, Mbale, had travelled to Takoradi on the day of the match, and my second-choice, Addo, had a wrist injury.

So, I didn’t have a goalkeeper. Then, a man called Papa Emma told me, ‘Coach, we have a goalkeeper at Rago. Let’s try him.’ I said, ‘Go and bring him,’ and that was the turning point for Olele.”

He continued, explaining that Olele impressed him in his first game, where his first save convinced Sarpong that he would become a national star.

“I put him in against Gapoha in Tema. I was there with my late team manager, Kobbina. The first shot that was taken, the way Olele caught the ball—he didn’t just kick it away but threw it—I turned to my team manager and said, ‘This is a national star. If he progresses well, he will be a national star.'”

As JE Sarpong predicted, the retired goalkeeper is now regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest-ever goalkeepers.

He spent 16 years with the Black Stars, showcasing exceptional goalkeeping skills that placed him among the greats and made him an idol for the new generation.

However, the story of the young boy who grew up in the slums of Teshie to become a national star cannot be told without mentioning JE Sarpong, who believed in Olele and gave him his breakthrough.

Richard “Olele” Kingston was also the first Ghanaian goalkeeper to be transferred for a fee paid in dollars, during his move from Great Olympics to Galatasaray.

Three Americans jailed over failed DR Congo coup returned home

0

The three Americans had their death sentences commuted to life in prison last week The three Americans had their death sentences commuted to life in prison last week

Three Americans convicted for their role in a failed coup in Democratic Republic of Congo last year have been sent home to the US to serve the rest of their jail terms.

The three were originally sentenced to death by a military court before their sentences were commuted to life in prison last week.

US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce said the three were “in our custody”.

The repatriation comes as the US and DR Congo explore a deal to exploit the central African country’s huge mineral wealth.

Last week, US President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for Africa visited DR Congo and confirmed that the two countries were in talks about minerals and said it could involve “multibillion-dollar investments”.

DR Congo has large deposits of coltan and cobalt, used in electronic equipment and batteries for electric cars, which are currently largely extracted by Chinese mining companies.

The three American convicts – Marcel Malanga Malu, Tylor Thomson and Zalman Polun Benjamin – left DR Congo on Tuesday to serve the remainder of their sentences in the US, said Congolese presidential spokesperson Tina Salama.

They were escorted to N’Djili International Airport in Kinshasa in “strict compliance with legal procedures”, said DR Congo’s presidency.

The transfer “is part of a dynamic of strengthening judicial diplomacy and international cooperation in matters of justice and human rights” between DR Congo and the US, the presidency added.

The Americans were among 37 people sentenced to death last September by a military court.

Jean-Jacques Wondo, a dual Congolese and Belgian citizen who was also sentenced to death, was in February transferred to Belgium because of ill-health.

It is not clear if the other convicts, who include a Briton, a Belgian and a Canadian national, will also have their sentences commuted.

They were accused of leading an attack on both the presidential palace and the home of an ally of President Félix Tshisekedi last May. Later they were convicted of criminal conspiracy, terrorism and other charges, which they denied.

The suspected leader of the plot, Christian Malanga, a US national of Congolese origin, was killed during the attack, along with five others. Hi son, Marcel Malanga Malu, is among those sent home on Tuesday.

Details of the prisoner transfer agreement were not immediately clear but the State Department said it was aware of the repatriation done in collaboration with the US embassy in Kinshasa, the DR Congo capital.

The Department of State spokesperson said that the US condemned the armed attacks and supported DR Congo’s bid to hold the convicts accountable, but she also sought “consistent, compassionate, humane treatment and a fair legal process”.

Joseph Szlavik-Soto, a lobbyist working for the Congolese government, told Reuters news agency that it had agreed to pay for the damage caused by protesters who attacked the US embassy and other missions earlier this year. The US officials are yet to comment on the matter.

Anytime Alban Bagbin responds to NIB, Ntim Fordjour will be interrogated — Felix Ofosu

According to a report from Citi News, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, has revealed that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) is currently awaiting a response from the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to allow the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, to be made available for questioning in an ongoing investigation involving allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering.

The development follows claims made by Rev. Ntim Fordjour that two aircraft recently arrived in Ghana carrying illicit drugs and large sums of cash.

Despite these serious allegations, he has not yet responded to formal requests from the relevant security agencies.

During an appearance on Face to Face on Channel One TV, Kwakye Ofosu stressed the need for openness in the matter, noting that the MP’s cooperation is crucial.

He also called for the interrogation process, once it begins, to be accessible to the public in the interest of accountability.

He noted that the NIB had formally reached out to the Speaker for permission to engage the MP, and they are now waiting for an official reply.

Once approval is granted, Rev. Ntim Fordjour will be expected to assist with the investigation.

“The NIB wrote to the Speaker to release Ntim Fordjour. The Speaker is yet to respond to the NIB, as far as I am aware. Anytime the Speaker responds to it, he will be available for questions,” he said.
