Every baby in the UK will have their DNA tested under a new 10-year plan for the NHS.
The whole-genome sequencing will screen for hundreds of diseases and allow people to “leapfrog” killer illnesses, according to the Health Secretary, Wes Streeting.
Speaking to the Telegraph, he revealed plans to move the NHS towards a model of sickness prevention rather than treatment.
Personalised medicine, made possible through things like DNA testing, will form a big part of that plan, with £650m pledged to genomics research by the government.
“The revolution in medical science means that we can transform the NHS over the coming decade, from a service which diagnoses and treats ill health to one that predicts and prevents it,” said Mr Streeting in a statement.
“Genomics presents us with the opportunity to leapfrog disease, so we’re in front of it rather than reacting to it.”
The upcoming Life Sciences Sector Plan will be published in early July.
Newborns are currently offered a blood test when they are around five days old to check for nine rare but serious conditions.
In those blood spot tests, the baby’s heel is pricked to collect a few drops of blood on a card, but with whole genome sequencing, blood samples are typically taken from the umbilical cord shortly after birth.
In the past, Mr Streeting has spoken about his desire to make the NHS more preventative, in order to reduce rates of serious illness and save money.
Technologies like artificial intelligence will be used by the health service to predict illness and allow treatment or medication to be offered much earlier.
“With the power of this new technology, patients will be able to receive personalised healthcare to prevent ill health before symptoms begin, reducing the pressure on NHS services and helping people live longer, healthier lives,” said Mr Streeting.
Along with a greater focus on prevention, the Government’s 10-year plan is expected to include Mr Streeting’s two other “shifts” in the NHS: moving care away from hospitals to communities, and from analogue to digital services.
It follows Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ announcement that the Government would increase NHS funding by £29 billion per year in real terms over the next three years as it tries to cut waiting lists in line with its election promises.

A man claiming to be the groom’s brother, who spoke to this reporter, described the day as one filled with happiness and laughter. He revealed that the groom had been searching for a life partner for some time and was overjoyed to finally have found love.
Sadly, the celebration turned into mourning within hours as the couple met their untimely death as some foreigners riding unregistered car lost control and crash the couple to death.

The Committee tasked with developing a roadmap for the implementation of the government’s free tertiary education initiative for Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) last Friday held its maiden meeting in Accra.
Co-chaired by the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak, and the National President of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), Mr Joseph Atsu Hormadzi, the eight-member committee was inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu.

To this end he said everything would be done to ensure that the President, John Dramani Mahama’s vision and pledge of providing free tertiary education to PWDs were realised.
Mr Joseph Hormadzi, in his opening remarks, expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama’s administration for the initiative.
According to him, many persons with disabilities struggle to pay their tertiary tuition fees and related expenses.
“On behalf of the Board and the entire body of persons living with disabilities, we wish to express our gratitude to H.E. the President for this initiative. It is a unique and significant package for us, and it deserves to be celebrated, as many of our students are currently stranded.
“For university education, if you do not make a payment, you cannot register, and many of our students are struggling to raise funds to pay their fees.
Hon. Deputy Minister, we are grateful to His Excellency for this vision, and we also extend our gratitude to the Hon. Minister and yourself, the Deputy Minister, for setting up this committee to ensure that the necessary modalities are outlined for PWDs to access tertiary education,” he added.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Students’ Loan Trust, Dr Saajida Shiraz, who was also present at the meeting, along with her team, gave a presentation on “Facilitating Access to Enhanced Tertiary Education Financing for Students with Disabilities.”

“Justice Blay and Frederick Asare are leaving for free but Kotoko could’ve sold them looking at their achievements,” he stated.

“Justice Blay’s departure could’ve been resolved. He is important in defense and midfield, so such a player shouldn’t be allowed to go. Michael Omari Wadie, a former National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has spoken out about the seizure of his Lexus 507 vehicle by the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) task force in January 2025.
According to Omari Wadie, the incident served as a personal eye-opener, making him realize that he was now in opposition.
He noted that when one’s party is in power and things are done right, certain benefits and privileges are enjoyed—but those vanish when power changes hands.
Speaking in an interview on Asaase PA on June 19, 2025, he recounted how the vehicle was taken into custody by the ORAL team.
He explained that following the seizure, he decided to voluntarily take another newly acquired vehicle directly to the police station for inspection, without even driving it home.
“I had just gotten another car, and after what happened with the first one, I decided not to take any chances. I took it directly to the police station for them to conduct their checks,” he said.
However, days later, when he returned to retrieve the vehicle, he was informed that it was still under investigation and could not be released.
“I thought they would have completed all the necessary checks, but they told me the car I brought in voluntarily was still being investigated. That was when it really dawned on me that I was in opposition,” he remarked.
Omari Wadie admitted that the experience frustrated him to the point that he avoided the station for about three weeks. Eventually, he received a call from the police informing him that he could come for the vehicle, as it was occupying space at the station.
“I was so upset. I told them to bring the car to me instead,” he added.
The ORAL team returned the first vehicle just a few days after it had been taken into custody.

The Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC) has appealed to the government for GHS300 million in compensation for farmers and property owners to enable the full acquisition of a 20,000-acre parcel of land at Jomoro in the Western Region for the establishment of Ghana’s Petroleum Hub.

The National Organiser of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Yaw Asani Tano, has described the appointment of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as a calculated move by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to maintain influence over the judiciary even after leaving office.
According to the outspoken politician, Justice Torkornoo was not the most senior candidate at the time of her elevation and reportedly ranked seventh among her peers.
“If you look at their seniority system, it was not her time to be Chief Justice. She was elevated due to her age and the longer period until her retirement. That’s a long-term strategy. Even if the NPP is out of power, she will still be there,” he claimed in an interview on Peace FM.
Describing the judiciary as the “last protective covering” for the ruling party, he argued that her appointment served more as a political safeguard than a merit-based selection.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on May 28, 2025, unanimously dismissed an injunction application filed by the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, which sought to halt the proceedings of a presidential committee investigating petitions for her removal from office.
Justice Torkornoo filed the application on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, requesting the apex court to issue an interlocutory injunction against the six-member committee established by President John Mahama.
The application aimed to restrain the committee from carrying out any inquiry related to the petitions until the substantive case was resolved.
According to court documents, the Chief Justice sought an order specifically barring Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu—as well as other committee members, including Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazuwaaruah Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dziasah—from participating in the investigation.
She also requested that Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu be disqualified from presiding over or contributing to the committee’s deliberations.

A trader, Constance Gyasi Nimako, has been remanded into custody by an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing and laundering money mistakenly credited to her bank account.
Nimako, also known as Maa Adwoa, is alleged to have spent GH¢770,500 out of GH¢800,000 that was erroneously transferred to her bank account at Ecobank.
She reportedly transferred GH¢300,000 of the amount to her mother’s account at Fidelity Bank and GH¢400,000 to her own account at GCB Bank, and withdrew GH¢70,500 in cash.
She has been charged with stealing and money laundering, while her mother, Cecilia Gyasi, has been charged with abetment of crime to wit money laundering. The two pleaded not guilty.
Presiding Judge, Mrs Susan Eduful, after listening to arguments from both the prosecution and defence, remanded Nimako due to the grave nature of the charge and concerns that she might not appear to stand trial.
Her mother, Cecilia Gyasi was, however, granted bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties, who must be immediate family members earning not less than GH¢2,000 monthly.
The case has been adjourned to July 7, 2025.
The complainant, the prosecution said, was the chief executive officer of a company (name withheld), which holds a bank account with Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) and a personal account with Ecobank Ghana.
On February 4, 2025, the complainant instructed the Manet Branch of CBG to transfer GH¢800,000 from the company’s CBG account to his personal Ecobank account for a business transaction.
However, in executing the transfer, the complainant mistakenly quoted Nimako’s Ecobank account number instead of his own.
The funds were erroneously transferred into Nimako’s account on February 6, 2025.
The error came to light when the complainant followed up with CBG about the delay in the expected transfer.
Upon discovering the mistake, CBG contacted Ecobank to recall the funds, only to learn that by February 11, Nimako had already moved the money, leaving only GH¢29,778.47 in the account.
Efforts by both banks to retrieve the money proved futile as she refused to return the funds.
The Head of Security and Investigations at CBG subsequently assisted the complainant to report the matter to the police.
The prosecution said when contacted by the police, Nimako refused to cooperate, rained insults and curses on the officers, and went into hiding.
She was later arrested in Kumasi, while her mother, Gyasi, was arrested in Accra.
Investigations revealed that Nimako informed her mother about the money and instructed her to withdraw the GH¢300,000 transferred into her account, which she did.
During interrogation, Nimako claimed the money was sent to her by a foreign company with whom she had no prior dealings.
She further claimed she had ordered goods with the funds and was awaiting their delivery.
Prosecution indicated that investigations are ongoing to trace and recover the remaining amount.
Following the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, tensions between the two countries have continued to grow. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio gave a serious warning to Iran, saying that any act of revenge would be a big mistake. Rubio said that if Iran chooses to respond with violence, the U.S. has even greater weapons and strategies it hasn’t used yet. He explained that the goal is not war, but protection and prevention of nuclear threats.
Rubio also explained what the U.S. hopes to achieve with Iran. The U.S. is against Iran having nuclear weapons but is open to allowing a peaceful nuclear energy program, similar to what other countries use. He said the U.S. had made fair offers to Iran, but Iran ignored these efforts and refused to cooperate.
He blamed Iran for not choosing peace and for avoiding diplomatic talks. According to Rubio, the U.S. waited patiently for Iran to respond, but after being ignored, the President decided that action had to be taken. The result was the military operation targeting Iran’s nuclear sites.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reacted strongly, accusing the U.S. and Israel of crossing a serious red line. He announced plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which could lead to even greater involvement by Russia. Iran may now be looking for stronger allies, and this move suggests that the conflict could spread beyond the Middle East if more countries become involved.

NPP Flagbearer hopeful, Bryan Acheampong addressing some former MMDCEs
Former Minister for Agriculture and New Patriotic Party(NPP) Flagbearer hopeful, Bryan Acheampong, has urged all former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), to commit themselves fully support his campaign agenda, assuring them of shared glory should he win the flagbearer contest.
Speaking at an engagement with party members in a video shared on social media, Acheampong delivered a rousing call to unity and loyalty within the NPP, emphasizing that the path to power must be a collective effort—and the rewards a collective benefit.
“I will not win, we will win the power together,” Acheampong declared. “And if there are any spoils, we will share them for the benefit of our party and our country.”
He continued, warning that the contributions, or lack thereof of former MMDCEs will not go unnoticed:
“If you do it, we will hear. If you don’t do it, we will hear it too.”

The Zongo Youth Movement, a Muslim advocacy group, has issued a strong caution to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, urging him to keep his campaign away from Zongo and Muslim communities following controversial remarks attributed to a member of his campaign team.
The group is calling for a formal apology to the Muslim community and Ghanaians at large, emphasising that political campaigns must not undermine national unity or religious coexistence.
The concern stems from comments allegedly made by Dr. Stephen Amoah, popularly known as Sticka, suggesting that the NPP lost the 2024 elections due to the Islamic faith of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking to Citi News, Public Relations Officer of the Zongo Youth Movement, Abdullai Ali, condemned the remarks as divisive and contrary to Ghana’s legacy of religious tolerance. He demanded a public apology from both Dr. Amoah and Kennedy Agyapong.
“It is not unfair to associate these remarks with Kennedy Agyapong’s camp. After the comments were made, no one from his team came forward to disown or condemn them. In fact, some members defended the claim on TV and radio using misleading data,” he stated.
Ali added that a clear dissociation by Agyapong from Dr. Amoah’s comments would have shifted accountability. “If Kennedy Agyapong had issued a statement distancing himself from the remarks, we would have focused only on Dr. Amoah. But the silence from his camp speaks volumes.”
Gyampo denies interference in OSP probe, clarifies contact with Special Prosecutor
A Tunisian court on Friday handed down a 22‑year prison sentence in absentia to former President Moncef Marzouki, a fierce critic of President Kais Saied, on charges of undermining state security, raising the opposition’s fears of an escalating crackdown against critics.
Marzouki, who was president from 2011 to 2014, accuses Saied of establishing an authoritarian regime after dismissing parliament and ruling by decree since he seized almost all powers in 2011.
Saied defends his actions as necessary steps to stabilise Tunisia.
This is the third ruling against Marzouki, after a court ruled last year to imprison him for eight years and four years before that in various other cases.
Commenting on the ruling, Marzouki said from his exile in Paris: “I say to these judges: your rulings are invalid, and you are invalid … you will be tried soon”.
“Democracy will return”, he added.
Earlier on Friday, another court sentenced Sahbi Atig, a senior official in Ennahda, the country’s main opposition party, to 15 years in prison on charges of money laundering, his lawyer said.
The 15-year sentence was shorter than some sentences handed down recently. In April, a court sentenced a string of opposition leaders, businessmen and lawyers to prison terms of up to 66 years, on conspiracy charges.
Most of the leaders of political parties in Tunisia are in prison, including Abir Moussi, leader of the Free Constitutional Party, and Rached Ghannouchi, the head of Ennahda – two of Saied’s most prominent opponents.

Accra-based businessman and auto dealer, Horic Ampofo, has extended a generous act of kindness to an elderly man who had been volunteering as a sweeper along the Ayi Mensah-Peduase stretch.
Mr. Ampofo, who first encountered the elderly citizen earlier this year while commuting along the route, had initially pledged to support him with a monthly allowance of GH¢1,000 in appreciation of his dedication to keeping the area clean.
However, in a recent interaction, the elderly man humbly requested a one-time lump sum to enable him to start a small business and secure a more sustainable livelihood.
Moved by his determination and entrepreneurial spirit, Mr. Ampofo fulfilled the request by donating a lump sum of GH¢15,000. The donation is expected to support the elderly volunteer in setting up his own business and gaining financial independence.

The Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr Abiba Zakariah, has called on insurance companies in Ghana to design inclusive products that serve all demographics, especially those in the informal sector.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed Insurance House in Kanda, Accra, Dr Zakariah emphasised the pivotal role of insurance in national development.
“The insurance industry must rise to the task. We cannot build a resilient financial sector without including the majority of our working population, market women, farmers, artisans, who remain largely uninsured,” she said.
Dr Zakariah, who served as Guest Speaker, stressed that insurance should be made accessible to all segments of society.
“No one should be left behind in terms of financial protection, inclusion, and security. The collective effort that brought this building to life must now reflect in how we serve the public,” she added.
The President of the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) and Managing Director of Ghana Re PLC, Seth Aklasi, hailed the project as a landmark achievement for the industry.
“The Insurance House is more than a building, it’s a symbol of unity, resilience, and progress. It stands as a fiscal commitment to the growth and transformation of our sector,” Aklasi stated.
He described the facility as a hub where “ideas will flourish, partnerships will be forged, and the relevance of insurance will be elevated as a national priority.”
Also speaking at the ceremony, Benjamin Yamoah, Chairman of the Ghana National Bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme and Managing Director of Activa International Insurance, lauded the vision behind bringing insurance institutions under one roof.
“This is not just a space for administrative work, it should become a space of real transformation. The energy in this building must translate into action,” he urged.
The three-storey, ultra-modern facility with a basement, located in Kanda, was designed and constructed by Spektra Global, a prominent Ghanaian architectural and construction firm.
Company representatives gave a brief history of the project, highlighting the challenges and milestones along the way.
Additionally, Goodwill messages were delivered by Presidents and Representatives of the Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana (IBAG), the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG), the Actuarialy Society of Ghana (ASG), the West Africa Insurance Companies Association (WAICA), and the Ghana Insurance College (GIC).
The dedication of the facility was performed by the immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana, Most Rev. Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo.
Special recognition plaques were awarded to past GIA presidents and key figures who played instrumental roles in realizing the dream of Insurance House. These included Nana Agyei Duku, Max Kobina, Wilson Tei, Emmanuel Mahama Baba, and others.

Sad scenes unfolded at the East Legon Executive Fitness Club during the one-week memorial observance for Highlife star Dada KD.
Scores of musicians, politicians and sympathisers attended the one-week observance to offer their condolences to the grieving family.
The family of Dada KD also announced that the final funeral rites of the late musician would be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, in his hometown in Kwadaso, Ashanti Region.
Speaking to GNA Entertainment on the sidelines of the memorial service, celebrated Highlife musician Nana Agyemang expressed condolences to the bereaved family during this trying time.
“Myself and Dada KD were billed to perform at a programme later in the month of May, so I was in disbelief when I heard the news of his death.
“I loved being on the same shows with him because he was a very jovial character and always wanted to make his friends laugh and would also advise you on how to progress,” he said.
Nana Agyemang believes Dada KD had left an indelible mark in the music industry and his songs would forever be timeless.
Some dignitaries who attended the one-week observance service include Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Deputy Chief of Staff (Administration); Akwasi Agyeman, former Ghana Tourism Authority CEO; musician Kaakyire Kwame Appiah; and representatives of the Musicians Union of Ghana, among others.

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with a burglary and theft incident at Kasoa Nyanyano in the Central Region.
The suspect, identified as Ibrahim Abubakar Sadiq, was captured on a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera during the burglary.
He was subsequently arrested on June 16, 2025, from his hideout at Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra, wearing the same attire he used during the operation.
A press release copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Saturday said preliminary investigations revealed that Sadiq stole an iPhone 14 Pro Max, valued at GH¢9,000, a Barclays Bank ATM card, a UK driver’s license, and a cash amount of £2,000.
Upon interrogation, the suspect admitted to the offence and disclosed that he sold the iPhone 14 Pro Max to an unknown buyer at Agbogbloshie for GH¢2,000.
Police say Sadiq is currently in custody, assisting with investigations and will be arraigned.

Cameroonian football icon Geremi Njitap has been banned from all football-related activities for five years by the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), following a disciplinary standoff with the body’s president, Samuel Eto’o.
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid defender was also handed a fine of 10 million CFA francs (approximately $16,500), in a move that has intensified the growing rift between two of the nation’s most prominent former players.
According to a statement from FECAFOOT’s ethics committee, Geremi was found guilty of breaching the federation’s behavioural code.
The sanction stems from an incident at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, where Geremi reportedly clashed with a member of Eto’o’s camp during Cameroon’s group match against The Gambia. He was allegedly ejected from the stadium by security on the orders of federation officials.
Geremi, now 46, enjoyed a decorated career with 118 caps for the Indomitable Lions, and won league titles with Chelsea and Real Madrid. Since retirement, he has led Synafoc, the union representing Cameroonian footballers.
He has 10 days to appeal the decision and is reportedly considering taking the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has assured Ghanaians that the country has enough fuel reserves to last beyond two months, despite ongoing global uncertainties.
Speaking during a briefing with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy at Senchi on Saturday, Mr. Tameklo disclosed that Ghana currently has over 200 million litres of petrol and 150 million litres of diesel in reserve.
“I can assure the good people of Ghana that we have enough stock to last us beyond two months, and with all the ongoing efforts, we are confident that there will be no supply disruptions,” he stated.
He further indicated that vessels loaded with petroleum products were already in Ghanaian waters and that Nigeria’s Dangote refinery was producing substantial volumes of petrol and diesel, which would further support national demand.
The 17-member Energy Committee, chaired by Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, is on a sector-wide engagement to assess the operations, challenges, and plans of key players in the energy industry.
Addressing concerns about the GH₵1 fuel levy, Mr. Tameklo noted that the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Revenue Authority were closely monitoring global developments before making a decision.
He explained that the government was assessing the potential impact of the Israel-Iran conflict, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz—a critical global shipping route.
“At this stage, there is no significant disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. We are confident that if conditions remain stable, the government will communicate a decision on the levy’s implementation soon,” he added.
Mr. Tameklo clarified that initial plans to roll out the policy on June 16, 2025, were delayed due to consultations with stakeholders, including the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, and a last-minute intervention by the Minister of Finance.
He emphasised that the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies would also be engaged before the policy is rolled out to ensure transparency and consensus.
Responding to calls by the Minority in Parliament for the repeal of the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA), Mr. Tameklo said the demand lacked a viable alternative to fund essential liquid fuel supplies.
“We still need liquid fuel to keep our lights on. If the Minority has a workable alternative, I believe President John Dramani Mahama—a listening president—would consider it,” he said.
He emphasised that the President was committed to ensuring energy stability, noting that recent interventions, including efforts to stabilise the exchange rate, had already resulted in a GH₵4 drop in petroleum prices—a direct benefit to consumers.
On the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, Mr. Tameklo maintained that while initial tensions were high, global diplomatic efforts were underway to de-escalate the situation.
“It’s early days yet, but the major powers involved in global diplomacy are engaging the key actors. There is optimism that negotiations will prevail,” he said.
Mr. Tameklo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a stable fuel supply, controlling prices, and keeping industries and homes powered as the country continues to monitor international developments.

The personal has become very political in Zambia.
Mourning and the build-up to a funeral is never an easy time, but throw in the fallout from a long-standing feud between the country’s two top politicians – President Hakainde Hichilema and his now-late predecessor Edgar Lungu – and you have an explosive mix.
The animosity was such that Lungu’s family said one of his dying wishes was that Hichilema should not go anywhere near his body.
The row has scuppered government plans to honour the former head of state, created a distressing rift in the country and left people wondering how things got this bad.
Sunday was supposed to see the state funeral for the 68-year-old who governed for six years from 2015. But there will be no visiting dignitaries and the venue – a huge conference centre in the heart of the capital, Lusaka – will lie empty.
There was already a hint of possible trouble ahead immediately after Lungu’s death on 5 June, in the video message shared by his daughter on Facebook.
Dressed in a thick, black jacket and holding back tears, Tasila Lungu said that her father had died in a hospital in South Africa where he was being treated with “dignity and privacy”.

She rounded off the one-minute announcement saying that “in this moment of grief, we invoke the spirit of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ – the timeless creed that guided President Lungu’s service to our country”.
To highlight the need for unity at a time when tradition suggested that the nation should naturally come together was a clue that all was not well.
And there was another issue: where was the president’s announcement?
Ms Lungu’s statement confirmed social media rumours of her father’s death, condolence messages were already being sent, including from Kenya’s president, but there was no word from Hichilema.
While independent outlets were reporting the news, the national broadcaster, ZNBC, remained silent.
Then, three hours after the daughter’s post, Zambia’s head of state shared his thoughts in a text post on Facebook. He made his own appeal for unity, asking people to “uphold the values of peace, dignity and togetherness that define us as Zambians”.
Information Minister Cornelius Mweetwa dismissed concerns about the delay in Hichilema talking about the death. He told the BBC that, based on precedent, it was not the head of state’s role to be the first to announce the passing of a predecessor.
Nevertheless, Lungu’s supporters felt that Hichilema’s message of “togetherness” rang hollow.
Hichilema finally became president at his sixth attempt after soundly beating Lungu at the polls in 2021. It was their third electoral match-up, but the enmity went beyond ballot-box rivalry.

The key to understanding this was the more than 100 days that Hichilema, opposition leader at the time, spent in detention in 2017, awaiting trial on treason charges.
He was accused of endangering the life of then-President Lungu after his motorcade allegedly refused to give way to the one transporting the head of state.
The charges were only dropped after the intervention of the Secretary General of the Commonwealth.
Later that year, Hichilema told the BBC that he had been held in solitary confinement for the first eight days in degrading and inhumane conditions “without electricity, without water, without a toilet”. He blamed Lungu personally for his imprisonment.
This was only one of 17 occasions that Hichilema was arrested. Supporters of his United Party for National Development were also harassed by supporters of the governing Patriotic Front (PF).
The 2021 election could have drawn a line under things.
Lungu, who had been rejected by a margin of almost a million votes by an electorate fed up with corruption allegations and concerns about apparent anti-democratic behaviour, went into political retirement.
But as disillusionment with the Hichilema presidency grew because of continued economic hardships, Lungu sensed an opportunity and announced in October 2023 that he was returning to frontline politics.
Soon after that announcement, Lungu was stripped of his retirement benefits and privileges by the state as he had returned to active politics.
This decision rankled with the former president and his family.
Lungu also complained of police harassment. At one point last year, he said he was “virtually under house arrest”.

In 2023, the police warned him against jogging in public, describing his weekly workouts as “political activism”.
“I cannot move out of my house without being accosted and challenged by the police and driving me back home,” Lungu told the BBC in May 2024.
In that interview, he also alleged that he had been barred from attending a conference overseas and from travelling abroad for medical treatment.
The information minister vehemently denied that there was ever a travel ban and described the idea that his movement was restricted in Zambia as a “fiction and a figment of the imagination of politically charged mindsets”.
Mweetwa added that despite Hichilema’s treatment when he was in opposition, he was determined not to do the same to Lungu.
There are also accusations that the president’s anti-corruption crusade targeted those close to the former governing PF, including Lungu’s family.
His widow, who continues to be investigated, has been taken to court and lost properties. Some of his children, including Tasila, have also faced similar treatment – they all deny wrongdoing.
Then at the end of last year the Constitutional Court barred him from running for president again, ruling that he had already served the maximum two terms allowed by law.
The former head of state was angry about the way he felt he had been treated.
“There was no love between the two men and [Lungu] was of the view that: ‘I don’t want people to pretend in my death that they cared about me when in fact, not’,” the family’s lawyer Makebi Zulu said.
Lungu eventually managed to get to South Africa in January, but Mr Zulu said that he was told by his doctors, after a series of tests, that had he gone for a check-up earlier, the treatment would have had a greater chance of success.
It was not disclosed what he was suffering from.
It was, in part, in light of this that Lungu said he “wouldn’t want the current president to attend his funeral”.
The government has rejected the idea that Lungu was stopped from going to see his doctors in South Africa.
Following his death, the family wanted to be in charge of the funeral arrangements, but the Zambian authorities sought to take control.
Despite the ill-feeling, last weekend it looked like a compromise had been reached and plans were made for a state funeral.
But relations once again broke down as the family said the government had reneged on the agreement after releasing a programme showing more involvement by Hichilema than had been planned.
In a message on Thursday, the president thanked Zambians for their “resilience, patience, solidarity and calmness during this time” but after doing “everything possible to engage the family… we have reached a point where a clear decision has to be made”.
With that, the funeral arrangements in Zambia were put on hold and the national period of mourning was abruptly cut short.
The burial is now set to take place in South Africa and it seems unlikely that Hichilema will attend.
Zambians had been hoping for both Hichilema and Lungu to bury their differences, but this death and the events that followed, have denied people the closure and reconciliation they desperately wanted to see between the two.
Those differences have also denied many millions of Zambians the opportunity to mourn and pay their last respects to a man who once ruled them.

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has revealed the tough road she faced as a young artist trying to break into the Nigerian music industry, detailing her early struggles with image, rejection, and industry backlash.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast with Joey Akan, Tiwa opened up about how her journey to stardom wasn’t just about talent—it also involved navigating societal expectations and reshaping her identity.
“I used to be a songwriter in the studio wearing baggy jeans and a T-shirt,” she recalled. “And he [her former label head, Tunji ‘TJ’ Balogun] literally changed that.”
She explained that TJ had a bold vision for her image and encouraged her to embrace a more glamorous, edgy look.
“He was just like, ‘Let’s give them the African Rihanna or Beyoncé.’ I was like, okay, let’s go ahead.”
However, the transformation was met with sharp criticism when she returned to Nigeria.
“My fashion sense attracted criticism. Then, I ran back to L.A.,” Tiwa said.
She shared how performance opportunities were sometimes blocked because of how she dressed.
“I was really hurt. I would go to shows and wait backstage, and they wouldn’t call me because maybe the governor’s wife had said I couldn’t come up. Or they’d say, ‘Make sure you don’t wear any of those skimpy dresses.’ I’m not making this up.”
The backlash extended to her music as well. “There was a time ‘Love Me’ was banned on TV. I was discouraged,” she admitted.
Despite the resistance, a pivotal call from her longtime manager, Bizzle, gave her the push she needed.
“I remember Bizzle called me and told me that ladies were loving me, so I came back to Nigeria.”
Yet her return wasn’t met with open arms. Tiwa revealed that she was turned away by all the major labels at the time.
“I’ve told the story where I went to all the labels and they all said no—Storm Records, Mo’Hits, Banky W’s EME, everyone.”
Now regarded as one of Africa’s most influential female artists, Tiwa Savage’s story is a powerful reminder of the rejection and judgment many women face when they challenge industry norms and societal expectations.

Speaking at an engagement with party members in a video shared on social media, Acheampong delivered a rousing call to unity and loyalty within the NPP, emphasizing that the path to power must be a collective effort—and the rewards a collective benefit.
“I will not win, we will win the power together,” Acheampong declared. “And if there are any spoils, we will share them for the benefit of our party and our country.”
He continued, warning that the contributions, or lack thereof of former MMDCEs will not go unnoticed:
“If you do it, we will hear. If you don’t do it, we will hear it too.”

Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has announced a stronger national focus on drug prevention, describing it as both a public health concern and a national security threat.
This is part of renewed efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking and abuse.
Speaking at the passing-out ceremony of 186 cadet officers of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) in Tema, the Minister directed the immediate operationalisation of the Substance Use Disorder Rehabilitation Fund.
Established under Section 22 of the 2020 Narcotics Control Commission Act, the fund is designed to support addiction research and the establishment of rehabilitation centres across the country.
“We must strengthen our preventive programmes, enhance rehabilitation efforts, and deepen international cooperation to tackle this menace at its roots,” the minister said.
“To this end, I have directed NACOC, as a matter of urgency, to operationalise the Substance Use Disorder Rehabilitation Fund.”
The fund will also support research into addiction and the treatment of persons with substance use disorders, recognising drug abuse as a growing public health challenge.
Minister Muntaka Mubarak pledged to contribute seed capital to the fund and urged individuals and corporate bodies to support the initiative as part of their corporate social responsibility in addressing the drug menace.
He further called for increased intelligence sharing among NACOC and other security agencies, noting the increasingly sophisticated nature of global drug trafficking networks.
“The drug trade is a complex and evolving threat, and it is only through unity that we can stay ahead of those who engage in this illicit business,” he said.
“Government is fully aware of the challenges you face, and we are taking concrete steps to address them.”
According to the minister, the government is investing in resources, expanding training programmes, and improving the welfare of security personnel.
He also noted ongoing efforts to strengthen the legal framework to ensure drug traffickers face the full force of the law.
The 186 cadet officers, commissioned into NACOC as part of Cadet Course 8, underwent six and a half months of rigorous training at the Ghana Navy Leadership Training School in Tema.
Their curriculum covered drug pharmacology, passenger profiling, document fraud detection, and intelligence operations—critical components in Ghana’s mission to dismantle international drug trafficking networks.
Emphasising that drug enforcement is both a professional duty and a moral responsibility, the minister commended the newly commissioned officers for their discipline and dedication.
The passing-out ceremony featured parade drills and tactical displays, accompanied by the Ghana Navy Regimental Band. Awards were presented to top-performing cadets.
Dignitaries in attendance included the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing; NACOC Director General, Brig. Gen. The Board of Directors of TDC Ghana Ltd recently undertook a comprehensive site tour across multiple project locations to assess development progress, address infrastructural challenges, and engage with project teams on forward-looking strategies.
Key highlights of the tour included ongoing refurbishment works at the TDC Towers, plans to construct a multi-storey car park, and the re-engineering of the central air conditioning system to improve building efficiency.
At Site 3, the Board reviewed proposed community-focused projects such as recreational centres, libraries, and additional infill housing developments aimed at expanding accommodation options in the area.
Preparatory work at the Kaizer Flats site is complete, with the land cleared and ready for the development of new 15-storey residential blocks.
The Board was assured that there are no legal or structural encumbrances on the cleared areas that could delay construction.
In Community 11, discussions focused on the ageing prefab structures, which have exceeded their lifespan. The Board is exploring the adoption of modern prefab technologies as a sustainable alternative.
At Community 26, home to the Kpone Affordable Housing Project, 191 specially designed one-bedroom units are currently available for sale, while construction is ongoing on two-bedroom units.
Board Chair Ashai Odamtten commended the technical teams, contractors, and staff for their dedication and work ethic.
He also underscored the need for greater environmental consciousness on project sites, urging teams to incorporate more greenery and maintain a focus on livable, community-centred developments.

The Executive Secretary to the Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has dismissed accusations made by the Damongo Constituency Secretary of the NPP regarding delays in commissioning the Broto water project.
Issifu Seidu Kudus Gbeadese described as “palpable lies” claims that GWCL Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu Garlus, has deliberately refused to commission the Broto artesian well, which is intended to supply water to parts of Damongo and its environs.
“It is not true that the Managing Director has refused to commission the project,” he stated.
“Nor is it true that the project is being funded with a loan of GH¢17,074,113.58 from Exim Bank. The Broto water project is being fully funded by the Ghana Water Company Limited.”
He made these comments in Damongo while responding to a press conference led by Kadiri Abdul-Rahman and other NPP sympathisers, who accused Mr. Mutawakilu of stalling the project for political reasons.
According to Mr. Gbeadese, both GWCL and the project contractor, Danank Engineering Company, have confirmed that the Broto project is not yet complete and therefore cannot be commissioned.
He denied claims that the project was finished in December 2024, stressing: “Let it be known that as of today, the project is incomplete and not ready for commissioning.”
He also challenged claims that the Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, was the driving force behind the project.
“It is a profound lie that the MP initiated or secured this project. If credit must go to anyone, it should be to Dr. Clifford Braimah, not Abu Jinapor,” he said.
Mr. Gbeadese highlighted the limited capacity of the Broto water system, noting that it can only serve about 16% of Damongo’s population.
“The project was designed when the population was about 41,180, with a daily demand of 2,059m³. The artesian well, however, has a projected yield of only 324m³ per day. It cannot simply serve the entire regional capital.”
On funding, he clarified, “As of December 2024, GWCL had paid GH¢4 million out of the total GH¢17 million project cost. Since assuming office, the current MD has approved an additional GH¢6.2 million, which is yet to mature.”
He quizzed, “So between the MD—who is actively funding and expanding the project—and the MP, who has not contributed a single cedi from his Common Fund, who truly deserves the credit?”
Mr. Gbeadese revealed that the MD has directed Danank Engineering and project consultants to expand the Broto project’s capacity by constructing two new boreholes at Soalepe, a suburb of Damongo, to support the existing well.
He emphasised that this effort does not replace the larger, long-term water project planned by former President John Mahama and the current GWCL MD to comprehensively resolve Damongo’s water challenges.
