NPP should’ve apologised, not boasted at Delegates Conference – Afadjato MP

0

Member of Parliament for Afadjato, Frank Afriyie, has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership for what he describes as a tone-deaf and arrogant posture during the party’s National Delegates Conference.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, July 21, he stated that the NPP missed a critical opportunity to express remorse for the economic hardship and failed promises that led to its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

“The glorious opportunity that the NPP had after their abysmal performance in 2024 was what they had at the conference. What I expected them to do was to apologise to Ghanaians and say that they are extremely sorry,” Afriyie noted.

He condemned the party’s defiant rhetoric at the event, describing it as dismissive of the genuine frustrations Ghanaians continue to face. “But when you come and say that we are not broken, we are fighters, and we have never been defeated, it is somehow. If you want to build, build on the notice of trust.”

Afriyie expressed particular concern over the NPP’s decision to project a message of resilience without admitting to its governance failures, including what he termed “faulty policy that never materialised” and “the imposed hardship” on the population.

“But when you come on such a big platform and tell Ghanaians that when you come, you will do worse, I see that as problematic,” he stressed.

His remarks come after the MP for Nhyiaeso, Stephen Amoah and the General Secretary of the NPP claimed that Ghanaians had regretted voting for the NDC just six months after the 2024 elections.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s in a speech also urged party members to rally behind a renewed sense of purpose, discipline, and unity.

Afenyo-Markin insisted the NPP is not a broken party and accused the ruling NDC government of worsening the economic situation since taking office.

UNICEF trains 30 investigators on safety of children online

0

Thirty investigators from the Criminal Investigations Department and the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police from the Western and Central Regions have been educated on the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (1038) to promote the safety of children online.

The two-day training of the investigators on Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse took the participants through the laws governing the subject under consideration and how the officers could use the laws to defend, protect and ensure safety of children who might be abused.

ACP Yakubu Akologo Ayamga, the Western Regional Deputy Police Commander praised UNICEF for sponsoring the training of the officers.

He encouraged them to consult the legal department of the service to effectively address the growing menace of online child sexual exploitation.

ACP Ayamga added that the investment by UNICEF underscored the seriousness of the subject matter and the need for communities and the securities to act quickly to safe children from this emerging exploitation and abuse.

He urged the officers to work hard in detecting, investigating to protect children and communities adding, “we also need to share best practices in protecting the dignity of children”.

She also promised that there would be positive outcomes from the training.

ASP Eunice Atinya, the Western Regional Director of DOVVSU, who was a participant, was grateful to UNICEF for the training.

She said: “We formerly did not know which acts to use in prosecuting offenders which sometimes resulted in less punishment or sentencing, but now through this education we are assured of better outcomes for victims.”

She described the course as very intensive and pleaded for more days for subsequent courses.

Madam Hilda Mensah, Child Protection Specialist with UNICEF noted how the Internet space was becoming a huge threat to the safety of children.

“Records show that some of these sexual exploitations sometimes come with extreme abuses, lowering down on human dignity,” she added.

The Child Protection Specialist added that perpetrators despite extorting monies from victims also left them with serious emotional scars of betrayal with many committing suicides.

Madam Mensah said: “Ghana was recording high figures of child sexual exploitation and abuse particularly on the Internet and entreated parents to be protective of their children.

“As a child, be wary of any person who asks you to take nude pictures or even invite secretly without your parents’ consent for such amorous reasons,” she added.

Songs that depend on dance challenges don’t last

Tinny is a Ghanaian musician Tinny is a Ghanaian musician

Veteran Ghanaian rapper, Nii Addo Quaynor, popularly referred to as Tinny has stated that songs that rely on dance challenges to go viral do not last in the music scene.

In an interview with Okay FM, Tinny said most songs today are made specifically for social media, with many of them depending on dance trends to go viral.

According to him, those types of songs usually fade away once the excitement around the dance dies down.

“Songs from this era that come with a dance challenge often are the ones that do not last long. Once the dance trend fades, the song fades away as well,” Tinny said.

He compared recent creations to songs from earlier years, which he believes have a longer lifespan and still sound fresh even after many years.

Tinny also noted that he does not believe in relying on dancers or viral trends to push his music.

He explained that his creative process is centered on making music for his fans and not just for online attention.

“I don’t see myself being in the studio to record a song and then looking for a dancer to promote it for me. I create music for my fans, and I won’t make a song just to hand it over to a dancer to get numbers. I don’t trust that approach,” he added.

Salam Mustapha dismisses claims of ‘favour-seeking’ donations by flagbearer hopefuls

Salam Mustapha is the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Salam Mustapha is the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has vehemently rejected claims that flagbearer hopefuls contributed to the party’s recent super delegates’ conference held on Saturday July, 19, 2025, in an attempt to curry favour with electorates.

Speaking on Channel One TV on July 20, 2025, Mustapha clarified that the donations were voluntary and made in solidarity with the party, noting the substantial costs involved in organising such a large-scale event.

“To bring over 5,000 people together, their accommodation, transport, it’s expensive. We are grateful to them for helping in these hard times,” Mustapha stated, emphasising the financial demands of the congress.

He explained that several prominent figures within the party, including former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Kennedy Agyapong, Frema Osei-Opare, and other former appointees and supporters, made significant contributions to support the event.

Mustapha asserted that these contributions were made purely in support of the party, not as a way to influence or gain favour in the ongoing flagbearership race.

He also made it clear that these donations would in no way serve as lobbying tools to become the preferred candidate for the party’s presidential slot.

He expressed satisfaction with the way members of the party had stepped up to support its rebuilding efforts.

“We are happy that members stood up for the party when it became necessary to support the party in its bid to rebuild,” Mustapha concluded, reiterating the spirit of unity and collective effort within the NPP.

The investment price of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins continues to decline, a development attributed to the Ghana cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar.

As of Monday, July 21, 2025, the BoG reported the following updated prices for its gold coins:

• The 0.25 oz coin is now selling at GH¢9,685.87, up from GH¢9,585.96 on July 18, 2025.

Black Queens players celebrating their victory over Algeria Black Queens players celebrating their victory over Algeria

Ghanaians were filled with joy following the Black Queens’ qualification to the semi-final of the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The queens stood the ground as the Algerians’ defensive resilience came into play and avoided conceding.

Despite dominating the game throughout, they could not find the back of the net after extra time.

Ghana had an excellent penalty shoot-out, winning 4-2 to progress to the semi-final in a thrilling fashion.

They will face host nation Morocco in the semi-final stage on July 22, 2025.

The qualification triggered celebrations from scores of Ghanaians on social media as they hailed them for advancing to the semi-final stage for the first time since 2016.

Some attributed the feat to the exploits of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under President John Dramani Mahama’s watch, saying ‘Aban papa aba’, meaning a good government has come.

Other football fans noted that with the team’s performance improving with each game, the Black Queens will go all the way to the final and clinch the trophy.

Some fans commended Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku and Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams for their support as well.

The Black Queens will face a tough test as they come up against the host nation, who have been impressive in the tournament.

NPP Unites To Rebuild After Successful Confab

0

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the weekend held a pivotal National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, signalling a renewed sense of unity, reform, and purpose following its 2024 electoral defeat.

The well-attended conference brought together over 5,000 delegates, including national, regional, and constituency executives, Members of Parliament, polling station officers, TESCON representatives, and grassroots supporters, all rallying under the theme “Rebuilding Together with Our Values.”

With a strong focus on inclusivity and democratic renewal, the delegates approved 54 out of 56 proposed constitutional amendments, marking a major overhaul of the party’s internal structures and electoral processes. These reforms, party leaders said, are aimed at deepening grassroots participation and strengthening the NPP’s capacity to reconnect with the Ghanaian electorate ahead of the 2028 general election.

General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong set the tone for the conference with a stirring speech that called on party faithful to rise above the disappointment of 2024 and embrace a collective vision for renewal.

“This is not just a conference,” he said. “This is a moment of reckoning. A moment of reflection. And above all, a moment of rising.”

Acknowledging the sting of defeat, Mr. Kodua stressed that the party’s spirit remained unbroken. “Yes, the 2024 elections were a blow. But that light has not gone out. It is still burning… and with this conference, with our collective faith and renewed strength, we shall fan that flame into a fire.”

He urged party members to embrace unity, discipline, and principle, reminding them, “We are not broken. We are not defeated. We are builders. We are dreamers. We are fighters. And when we come together, nothing is impossible.”

The party’s foundational values of freedom, enterprise, development, and responsibility, he noted, must guide every action and interaction going forward. “The journey ahead is not a sprint. It is a long and difficult road. But it is a road worth walking. And we will walk it together – shoulder to shoulder, heart to heart.”

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, echoed this call, urging the party to rebuild not only its electoral machinery but also its moral centre.

Quoting former President John Agyekum Kufuor, he said: “It is better to be a cleaner in a party in power than the general secretary of a party in opposition.” He added, “These words echo with urgency today… Ghana is now paying the price for trusting the NDC’s hollow promises.”

Mr. Afenyo-Markin described the 2024 loss as a wake-up call, exposing internal rifts and a disconnect from the electorate. “We have not lost our way because we forgot our policies. We have lost our way because we abandoned our principles,” he warned, urging members to return to the core values of service, discipline, truth, and integrity.

One of the most notable outcomes of the conference was the adoption of Motion 45, a constitutional amendment granting voting rights to former constituency and regional executives in the party’s presidential and parliamentary primaries. This move, aimed at fostering inclusion and rewarding long-standing service, modifies Articles 12 and 13 of the party’s constitution.

Chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Frank Davies, who presented the motions, said the amendments were in line with the party’s vision to “expand the electoral college for the Presidential Primaries to promote broader participation.”

Delegates also adopted Motion 6, which increases polling station executives from five to seven, incorporating new roles such as Electoral Affairs Officer and Communications Officer, a 40% expansion that aims to reinforce the party’s grassroots structures.

The Committee additionally recommended a future transition to a One-Man-One-Vote (OMOV) electoral system. Until then, the limited expansion approved is expected to significantly broaden the party’s internal voting base.

Motion 50 was another major reform, amending Article 13(11) to allow 30 National Patrons and all members of the National Council of Elders to vote in presidential primaries, a nod to the critical advisory roles these senior party figures play.

Not all motions passed. Delegates rejected Motion 17, which sought to transfer supervision of polling station and electoral area elections to regional executives, as well as Motion 54, which proposed defining ‘Youth’ in the constitution as anyone under the age of 35, in line with international and national standards.

Two additional provisions – Motion 46 and a new Article 12 clause – were also adopted. These require national officers, ministers, deputy ministers, CEOs, and government appointees seeking to contest parliamentary primaries in constituencies with sitting MPs to resign at least 12 months before national elections. Similarly, presidential aspirants must resign 24 months ahead of general elections. The goal is to ensure a level playing field and uphold fairness.

Former ministers, national patrons, and other dignitaries were present, lending their support to what many described as a defining moment in the party’s rebuilding process.

As the conference ended, the message from the leadership was clear: the NPP is not broken, but reawakening. The party aims to transform its defeat into determination and re-emerge as a united force ready to lead Ghana into a new era of hope and opportunity.

UTAG threatens industrial action over ‘Mahama’s inaction’ on galamsey

0

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has issued a stern call to President John Dramani Mahama to fulfil his pre-election pledge to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, warning that failure to act decisively could trigger industrial action.

In a statement released after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) on Thursday, July 17, UTAG expressed deep concern over the government’s lack of tangible progress in the fight against galamsey, despite some modest gains by the security agencies.

The association recalled that in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, President Mahama signed the National Pledge Against Illegal and Irresponsible Mining, witnessed by UTAG and the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG). The pledge, UTAG insists, constituted a solemn social contract with the Ghanaian people—a contract the President is yet to honour meaningfully.

Among the key unfulfilled promises UTAG highlighted are:

  • The immediate public denunciation of galamsey and its environmental harms;

  • A directive for all illegal mining activities to cease, including the evacuation of forest reserves and river bodies;

  • Empowering law enforcement agencies to act without fear or favour, regardless of political affiliation;

  • Implementation of coherent, practical anti-galamsey policies;

  • And the dismissal of local government officials who permit or protect illegal mining in their jurisdictions.

The statement points to continuing environmental destruction, particularly in the Ashanti, Eastern, Western, and Ahafo regions, as evidence of the administration’s failure to translate promises into real change.

While UTAG acknowledged instructions from the Attorney General for EOCO to investigate alleged political actors involved in illegal mining, it maintained that “more significant and coordinated action is needed to eradicate the galamsey menace in the country permanently.”

UTAG further urged the President to honour additional campaign commitments, including the repeal of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 and the declaration of a state of emergency in galamsey-affected areas.

“UTAG expects the President to fulfil his pledges with urgency and transparency. If concrete steps are not taken promptly, UTAG will not hesitate to activate all constitutionally permitted avenues—including industrial action—to demand the fulfilment of these national commitments.

“We urge our members and the broader public to remain vigilant and united in protecting our environment for future generations. The time for rhetoric is over; the time for action is now,” part of the statement read.

A quiet Kwahu Tafo community has been thrown into deep mourning following the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Isaac Kwasi Awuah Gorman, a final-year student of St. Joseph Technical Institute.

The young student was allegedly stabbed to death by a close friend, identified as Stephen Opuni, popularly known as “Sugar,” during an altercation reportedly triggered by a money disagreement.

Speaking to Adom News, Ebenezer Gorman, brother of the deceased, recounted the events that led to the tragedy and appealed for justice.

“My little nieces, who witnessed the incident, narrated the whole matter. According to them, Kwasi was with four of his friends. Suddenly, an altercation ensued over money, and they saw Akwasi hold his neck area and kept screaming that he had been stabbed. They were all students,” he said in anguish.

The tragedy is particularly difficult for the Gorman family, who say they had coexisted peacefully with both boys prior to the incident. Ataa Gorman, sister to the deceased, said the family is struggling to make sense of the sudden and violent turn of events.

The body of Isaac Gorman has since been deposited at the mortuary, where an autopsy will be conducted to aid investigations and provide forensic clarity into the exact cause of death.

Police in Kwahu Tafo acted swiftly to arrest the suspect, “Sugar,” who is currently in custody and assisting with investigations.

Authorities have yet to disclose the formal charges but have assured the public of a thorough probe into the incident. The community is hoping that swift legal proceedings will deliver justice for the Gorman family.

The tragic incident has also reignited concerns about youth violence and conflict resolution among teenagers, prompting calls for increased counselling and peer intervention strategies in schools.

‘You’re an educated illiterate’ – Mona Gucci slams MC Yaa Yeboah over Basintale comments

Mona Gucci is a Ghanaian media personality (L) MC Yaa Yeboah (R) Mona Gucci is a Ghanaian media personality (L) MC Yaa Yeboah (R)

Ghanaian media personality, Mona Gucci, has taken a swipe at entertainment pundit MC Yaa Yeboah, following comments she made against the Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale.

Contributing to discussions on thuggery witnessed at the Ablekuma North election rerun on United Showbiz on July 12, 2025, MC Yaa Yeboah alleged that Basintale, through posts on social media, subtly urged the thugs to cause havoc during the elections.

“Those tweets from notable political figures made on social media was an attempt to urge people to commit electoral violence and it is bad. Where are the family members of those people? You recruit someone’s breadwinner to commit violence, and that is a very bad thing,” Yaa Yeboah noted.

However, responding to MC Yaa Yeboah’s remarks, Mona Gucci, in a video shared on social media, called out the entertainment pundit describing her as an educated illiterate.

She told Yaa Yeboah to read and research her topics before making utterances on live television.

“How dare you. When they give you topics to talk about and you think you can’t contribute, better shut up, rather than to come on television to talk trash. People have been saying you don’t respect, and you think it is for fun?

“You look poised and eloquent, so you think you are intelligent, but you are not. You are actually an educated illiterate. You are doing too much, and we won’t sit down for you to disrespect our Malik Basintale. Don’t make that mistake again,” she warned.

Mona Gucci also advised Yaa Yeboah to refrain from speaking ill about Basintale.

“You are a nobody, so don’t speak to Malik Basintale like that. If you are not going to apologise to him for disrespecting him, just don’t mention his name again.

“Your utterances will make some people hurt you in town and Malik won’t be there at that point to stop them. I believe that if Malik were there at the point in time during the violence, he would have asked them to stop,” she added.

“We need a face with vision,In Bryan, we have a presidential candidate that can be trusted, It is Bryan and the rest, In Bryan, NPP will be revived, the voice of the masses is seen in Bryan.”

These endorsements reflect not only admiration for Dr. Acheampong’s political acumen, but also a broader yearning for a leadership figure perceived as capable of bridging party ideals with national aspirations.
His reputation as a strategic thinker, experienced policymaker, and responsive public servant seems to resonate deeply with the base, particularly in the wake of calls for generational renewal and a reinvigorated political message ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The conference further highlighted a growing consensus that the party must reposition itself around a transformative leader capable of uniting factions and appealing to a broader national electorate.
Many delegates said Dr. Acheampong embodied that promise.

The groundswell of support suggests that his entry into the race could significantly shape internal party dynamics in the months ahead.

The message from the conference grounds was unequivocal: many see in Dr. Bryan Acheampong a credible and compelling force in the NPP’s future.

BoG assures traders of adequate forex supply

0

The Bank of Ghana has moved to calm tensions within the business community, assuring the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) that there is no shortage of foreign exchange (forex) in the country.

This follows mounting complaints from traders and importers about the difficulty in accessing forex from commercial banks, which they say is affecting their ability to conduct international transactions.

In response, the Central Bank convened a meeting with GUTA’s leadership to address the concerns.

According to a statement issued by GUTA, the Bank of Ghana assured that there is adequate forex in the system and urged the business community not to panic.

“The Bank of Ghana has assured the business community that there is enough forex and that there is no need for alarm,” the statement read.

The Central Bank further indicated it would engage the commercial banks to determine the root cause of the reported delays or access challenges and take appropriate measures to address them.

In light of the meeting, GUTA President, Dr. Joseph Obeng, called on members of the business community to remain calm as the Central Bank works to resolve the issue. He also encouraged members to report any persistent difficulties in accessing forex to the association for further action.

“The Central Bank is working to resolve the issue, and we urge our members to stay calm. However, if the problem persists, we ask that it be reported to us,” Dr. Obeng stated.

The assurance comes as traders face increased pressure from currency volatility and supply chain disruptions, making reliable access to forex critical for sustaining business operations and maintaining price stability on the market.

Cedi stability collective responsibility — BoG Governor

0

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has urged the general public to support the government’s efforts in strengthening the cedi and improving the economic fortunes of the country.

He said Ghanaians must take a keen interest in protecting the cedi as the only legal tender for all commerce and transactions, as well as reporting unscrupulous people who would engage in counterfeiting and other practices that could undermine the cedi.

“The dollar is not a legal tender in Ghana. What this means is that if you pay me in dollars for a service, I have every right not to accept. Consciously, we must protect the cedi and ensure that it is the only form of transaction in this country.

“Legal tender underpins the legitimacy of pricing, the enforceability of contract, the structure of our billing systems and the integrity of our financial markets,” he said.

Dr Asiama was speaking at the 11th Absa- UPSA Law School Quarterly Banking Roundtable programme at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) last Thursday.

The event brought together banking professionals, regulators and academia to discuss legal issues confronting the banking sector and the economy in general.

It was on the topic: “Ghana’s Legal Tender, Monetary Policy and the Rising Cedi.”

Legal tender

Dr Asiama reiterated that the cedi remained the only legal tender backed by law for all transactions, warning that any deviation from the cedi in preference for foreign currencies was not only illegal but an assault on the country’s sovereignty.

“Any attempt to displace the cedi in ordinary commercial transactions, whether through mandatory dollar invoicing, preferential pricing in foreign currency or informal currency substitution, is not only economically distorting but also legally impermissible. It challenges the very fabric of monetary sovereignty,’ he said.

According to him, the disturbing trend of businesses pricing their services in foreign currencies such as the US dollar or accepting payment in currencies other than the cedi was a threat to the country’s well-being.

He emphasised that such acts, including counterfeiting and other economic crimes, undermined confidence in the cedi, ultimately harming the nation’s economy and development.

“In too many instances, whether in real estate, whether in paying school fees or high-value retail, the cedi is bypassed not because it is legally unfit, but we have allowed perception to triumph policy and convenience to triumph sovereignty,” he added.

While lauding the performance of the over 42 per cent gain by the cedi since the beginning of the year, the BoG Governor said efforts to sustain the cedi were a collective responsibility, adding, “The cedi can be as good as any of the best-performing and recognised currencies.”

Economic destiny

Dr Asiama traced the history of the cedi during its introduction in 1965 by the country’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and explained that it was a very significant moment as it represented an independent nation ready to chart its path in the pursuit of prosperity and development.

“The introduction of the cedi to replace the West African pound by Dr Kwame Nkrumah in 1965 marked a profound act of economic self-determination.

It became a symbol of national identity, of institutional emergence and the aspiration of an independent people,” he added.

He announced that President John Dramani Mahama would soon launch the 60th anniversary of the cedi, which would kick-start a series of activities commemorating the introduction of the cedi.

Importance

The Dean of the UPSA Law School, Prof. Kofi Abotsi, said the event was an important platform to bring all sector players in the banking industry to stimulate discussions on how to improve the legal framework of the industry.

77% of NPP delegates endorse Bawumia for flagbearer

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia receiving massive applause from delegates at their July 19 conference Dr Mahamudu Bawumia receiving massive applause from delegates at their July 19 conference

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has massive support from the delegates of the New Patriotic Party.

Over 70 per cent of the delegates vouched for Dr Bawumia to lead the party as flagbearer once again, according to an independent poll conducted by the Communication Research and Perception Study Group, a non-affiliated research study group.

This research group seeks to “conduct unbiased, social scientific research into candidate preferences in democratic elections”.

The group, in conducting the research, asked delegates questions related to their preferences for flagbearer, the date for the party’s presidential primaries, among others. Their responses, particularly regarding their preference for the right candidate to lead them into the 2028 elections, reflected the voice of the majority of NPP members.

Flagbearer Preference

77.9% of the delegates at the NPP Delegates Conference held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Saturday, July 19, 2025, said they preferred Bawumia, while 20.2% of them chose the former Assin Central lawmaker and presidential hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong.

Former Education Minister Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum polled 1.3% while Bryan Acheampong got 0.6% endorsement.

The report said Bawumia’s lead “is clearly a vote of confidence demonstrating his popularity, appeal, visibility and penetration among primary delegates”.

On the outcome for Kennedy Agyapong, the report said his low support, despite his “boisterous and vocal image, can mean that the grassroots base of delegates puts a premium on institutional continuity rather than populism.”

Early Congress for flagbearer

The survey also centred on whether or not the NPP should select its presidential candidate in January 2026.

85.67% of the delegates answered “yes”, a declaration which, to the research group, showed “there is widespread desire for candidate selection to be carried out early”.

“On an organisational behaviour level, the result also suggests a desire for strategic leadership, forward planning and closing ranks within the party.”

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor (R) and BOST MD Afetsi Awoonor (L) Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor (R) and BOST MD Afetsi Awoonor (L)

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has lauded the leadership of BOST for injecting new levels of efficiency into the company’s operations and contributing meaningfully to the ongoing transformation of Ghana’s energy sector.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on July 16, 2025, John Jinapor highlighted a number of reforms and achievements made in the past seven months.

He cited visible improvements at BOST and broader gains in the energy sector.

“I’m beginning to see positive trends at BOST, and we are already working to ensure that we extend a pipeline from Ghana to Burkina Faso. This will position Ghana as the main hub for Burkina to off lift petroleum products,” he said.

The sector minister praised BOST’s Managing Director [Afetsi Awoonor], and his deputy for their leadership and commitment to operational excellence.

“BOST is working very well to improve our strategic reserves, and I commend the Managing Director and his team for showing strong leadership and competence,” he stated.

Incorporated in 1993, the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) serves as Ghana’s primary institution for oil storage and distribution. As a key pillar in the nation’s energy security and regional fuel logistics, BOST’s performance remains vital to the country’s energy sector development.

Touching on national energy policy, John Jinapor expressed confidence in the direction of the sector and shared key accomplishments.

“As we reflect on the past seven months, I am filled with a sense of optimism for the future of our energy sector. Together, we have made significant strides, and I am proud to share our achievements,” he noted.

He outlined three major areas of progress: First, the stabilisation of power supply, which he described as a major milestone.

“We have worked tirelessly to ensure a consistent and reliable energy supply for all Ghanaians. This has been a critical undertaking, and we have made considerable progress,” he said.

Secondly, he pointed to the strengthening of Ghana’s petroleum reserves, emphasising that recent government efforts are already yielding results.

“We have increased our petroleum reserves, and the results are beginning to show. We remain committed to expanding these efforts.”

Lastly, John Jinapor highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at transparency and accountability in the energy sector.

“We have launched a comprehensive initiative to clean up the energy sector, tackle corruption, and promote transparency,” he stated.

In his closing remarks, the energy minister called for continued collaboration among stakeholders to build on the current momentum.

“I am confident that we will continue to build on these achievements for a brighter energy future,” he concluded.

Mikel Arteta under fire for ‘defending’ Partey over rape charges

0

Mikel Arteta (R) has been criticised for refusing to comment on Partey's (L) rape charges Mikel Arteta (R) has been criticised for refusing to comment on Partey’s (L) rape charges

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta is facing backlash on social media following a remark he made regarding Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey’s rape charges.

He declined to comment on the formal charges Partey is facing, describing the matter as a sensitive issue currently being handled in court.

Speaking ahead of his side’s pre-season tour of Asia, Arteta insisted he was unable to comment on the “very complicated” legal matter but maintained that the club acted appropriately.

As reported by ESPN, when asked whether he believed the club followed the correct procedures, Arteta replied: “One hundred per cent.”

This comment did not sit well with some football fans, who believe the Spanish coach is defending the player despite the formal charges.

They described the remark as disgraceful, stating they expected him to condemn the alleged act or at least refrain from commenting, as his response does not reflect well on his reputation.

Some defended the coach’s refusal to comment on the case, citing the fact that it is being handled in court and no judgement can be passed until it’s settled.

According to the Metropolitan Police, Partey’s alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022.

The charges involve three women: two counts of rape relate to one woman, three counts involve a second woman, and one count of sexual assault pertains to a third woman.

It is worth noting that the midfielder is scheduled to go on trial in August 2025, and until proven guilty, he cannot be considered guilty of any wrongdoing.

Forgotten ‘weeds’ prove a culinary hit in Kenya

0

Once dismissed as wild weeds and a “poor man’s food”, indigenous leafy vegetables in Kenya are now becoming much more common – grown on farms, sold in markets and gracing the menus of restaurants.

At the busy Skinners Restaurant in Gachie just outside the capital, Nairobi, one employee says demand for “kienyeji” – as all local vegetable varieties are known – is higher than for other greens.

“Many people ask for kienyeji when they come here,” Kimani Ng’ang’a tells the BBC, despite the fact the restaurant charges extra for them as he says they are harder to source.

Vegetables like cabbage, spinach, kale and spring greens, introduced by colonial authorities before the 1960s, are more readily available and cheaper. Spring greens are known as “sukumawiki”, meaning “stretch the week” in Swahili, reflecting how they have become a daily staple.

But diners in Gachie are part of the growing wave of Kenyans who see the benefits of eating local, organically produced nutrient-rich varieties of greens.

“It detoxifies the body and is good in weight loss,” says James Wathiru, who ordered “managu” – or African nightshade.

Another person told me: “It’s all about its taste, which is better.”

According to horticulture professor Mary Abukutsa-Onyango, this trend is reflected in government data and some of the health benefits are backed by research.

Over the last 10 years, production of local greens has doubled – with 300,000 tonnes produced by local farmers last year, she says.

It is a remarkable change in attitudes, given people used to look down on traditional crops as inferior – not realising they were often more resistant to diseases and pests, meaning they can be grown organically.

In the 1980s, when Prof Abukutsa-Onyango began her studies, she says she was perplexed to find them referred to as “weeds”.

“We never learnt about African indigenous vegetables. They were calling amaranth ‘pigweed’ [and] spider plant, they were calling it ‘spider weed’,” she tells the BBC.

Her postgraduate research on traditional plants was also tricky as there was no literature about them, but she persevered and now works with the government to promote them for food security.

She says managu and other local vegetables like “mrenda” (jute mallow) and “terere” (amaranth) have more essential minerals than sukumawiki, as well as “higher levels of vitamin A and C [and] antioxidants” that boost immunity and reduce the risk of disease.

Some varieties also contain protein, making them an excellent option for vegetarians. She notes for instance that 100g (3.5 ounces) of mrenda – known for its distinctive slimy texture when cooked – contains more nutrients than a similar portion of common cabbage.

The progress people like Prof Abukutsa-Onyango have made in promoting the diversity and knowledge of indigenous vegetables was acknowledged by Unesco in 2021, when the UN cultural agency commended the East African nation for the “safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage” that had been threatened by “historical factors and the pressures of modern lifestyles”.

It noted that Kenya had begun a project in 2007 involving scientists and local communities to record an inventory of traditional foods, which now includes 850 indigenous plants and their local names.

Some of these vegetables are eaten nationwide, while others are specific to certain areas or communities.

But sukumawiki, first introduced to Kenya from the Mediterranean as animal feed, is still favoured by many farmers – with more than 700,000 tonnes produced in 2023 – more than double the volume of all indigenous leafy vegetables combined.

Francis Ngiri, who used to farm in Kirinyaga in central Kenya where cabbages are a mainstay crop, explains that this is because, especially during the 1970s, those growing imported leafy vegetables used fertilisers and pesticides that damaged the local biodiversity.

Today, he tells the BBC, only the introduced varieties thrive as the soil has become too acidic to support many native species.

Determined to do something so they would not be lost forever, Mr Ngiri moved his operation to Kenya’s Rift Valley – an area he considers relatively untouched by chemical contamination – so he could practise organic farming of indigenous crops.

On a four-acre (1.6 hectare) farm in Elementaita, he began with 14 native varieties in 2016. Today that has grown to 124, many of which he has sourced through seed exchanges with fellow farmers. His farm now draws visitors from across Kenya and neighbouring countries.

They come to see how he collaborates with 800 other regional farmers, who also grow organic food for local markets, to preserve and regenerate “forgotten plants”, ensuring their genetic diversity is safeguarded for future generations.

Nonetheless by swapping seeds, Mr Ngiri and his colleagues are actually breaking the law as the government only allows the planting of certified seeds.

This controversial law was introduced in 2012 with the intention of protecting farmers from purchasing poor quality seeds.

Wambui Wakahiu, who trains farmers on seed conservation, says such policies do not support efforts to save indigenous crop varieties, as their seeds are not available in farm-supply shops.

She works for Seed Savers Network, a non-governmental organisation with 400,000 members, which helps establish seed banks for farmers to safely store and preserve their local seeds.

Her team found that more than 35 traditional plant varieties had been “completely lost” in one county alone because of the law.

“If [the farmers] focus more on the exotic [foreign] seeds, then the traditional seeds continue going away. And we have seen most of them go extinct,” she tells the BBC.

Mr Ngiri and others who have been exchanging seeds have not been pursued by the authorities, but he says the law does prevent them from marketing them: “If I can’t sell the seed, I don’t own it.”

And getting certification is a rigorous, costly process, as seeds need to be tested in a laboratory for their purity and things like how well they germinate.

Dr Peterson Wambugu, a chief research scientist with the national gene bank at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (Kalro), acknowledges that under the current law, the exchanging and sale of uncertified seeds – including those saved by farmers – is criminalised.

However, he points out that this is at odds with the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, of which Kenya is a signatory, as it sets out farmers’ rights to save, use and exchange their seeds.

The national gene bank has been working with other groups to draft regulations through the agriculture ministry to align Kenyan law with the treaty.

The proposals, once passed by parliament, will allow farmers to exchange their seeds “without fearing that what they are doing is criminal”, he tells the BBC.

However, the selling of such seeds would still remain outlawed – something Dr Wambugu knows means the journey to full acceptance of indigenous crops continues.

For Priscilla Njeri, a vegetable vendor in the bustling Wangige market in Kiambu county just outside Nairobi, there is no turning back, as she can see first-hand that indigenous greens are now the most popular with her customers – something she puts down to the media campaigns that promote them.

“The most preferred are managu, terere and kanzira [African kale] – which is popular for those who have sensitive stomachs as it has no gas,” she tells the BBC.

“But all the kienyeji greens are good because they have a better taste.”

Braided Hairstyles for Ladies: Timeless, Stylish & Protective

0

Braided hairstyles have remained a staple in women’s fashion for decades. Not only are they stylish, but they also serve as protective hairstyles that promote healthy hair growth and reduce breakage. Whether you’re going for a casual look, a formal event, or a traditional occasion, there’s a braided style to match every vibe.

One of the most popular options is box braids. These can be done in different lengths and thicknesses — from jumbo to micro — and can be styled into buns, ponytails, or left to hang freely. They’re versatile, low-maintenance, and perfect for busy women who want a long-lasting style.

Knotless braids have also become a top trend. Unlike traditional box braids, knotless styles are gentler on the scalp and give a more natural look. They’re lightweight and can be accessorized with beads, cuffs, or colored extensions for extra flair.

For ladies who prefer something simple and elegant, cornrows are a classic choice. Whether styled straight back, in zigzags, or with a creative parting, cornrows are neat and easy to manage. You can even pair cornrows with a bun or puff for a modern twist.

Fulani braids, which often feature feed-in cornrows with beads and center parts, are perfect for cultural events or adding a bold statement to your look. Other popular styles include Ghana weaving, twist braids, lemonade braids, and goddess braids, each offering unique beauty.

Braided hairstyles are not just about fashion — they reflect heritage, personality, and confidence. With proper care and hydration, they can last for weeks while keeping your hair protected. Whether sleek or voluminous, braided styles are a must-try for every woman who loves to keep her crown stylish and strong.

Eugene Boakye Antwi calls for unity in NPP

0

Accra, July 21, GNA- Mr Eugene Boakye Antwi, former Member of Parliament for Subin and former Deputy Minister, has struck a firm and rallying tone as he addressed the press on the future of the party.

With conviction and clarity, he called for unity across all ranks, emphasizing that the NPP’s main adversary remained the National Democratic Congress (NDC), not fellow party members.

In his interaction with the media, Mr Boakye Antwi underscored the importance of setting aside internal differences and embracing a new era of discipline, loyalty and collective responsibility.

He made it clear that without unity no amount of policy or political maneuvering would be enough to guarantee victory in the next election cycle.
“We have one common enemy and it’s not each other,” he stated, adding that “VICTORY 2028 begins with a UNITED NPP today.”

When quizzed on whether he will be contesting for the General Secretary position, he answered with confidence and subtle assurance: “When the time is up, I will surely contest.

“ He emphasized the need to modernize the party’s operations, systems, and communications to align with the times and prepare it for future governance.
His vision is one rooted in TECHNOLOGY, TRANSPARENCY, and ORGANIZATIONAL EFFICIENCY, aimed at positioning the NPP as not just a ruling party but a governing institution.

Mr Boakye Antwi’s comments have since sparked conversation among party faithful and grassroots organizers, many of whom see him as a steady hand with institutional knowledge and a deep understanding of both party structure and national governance.

As the race for the General Secretary position inches closer, the COURAGEOUS leader appears poised for a leadership comeback, one that could shape the future direction of the party.

Gov’t in talks with IPPs to favourably renegotiate power contracts – Jinapor

0

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has said that the government is in talks to renegotiate terms with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in a bid to strike a balanced outcome that serves both the state and the private sector.

This is being spearheaded by the Executive Director at the Africa Centre for Energy Policy Benjamin Boakye.

Speaking at a high-level forum on Ghana’s energy sector organised by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy and the Open Society Foundations on Friday, July 18, 2025, John Jinapor acknowledged that the initial phase of his tenure was marked by operational threats from IPPs, including potential shutdowns over unpaid arrears and other sector challenges.

“When I look at the bill, I say, ‘How much do we owe the IPPs? ‘ They said $1.7 billion. But how much do we owe the whole sector in terms of power generation? ‘They said $3 billion.’ I said the energy sector how much we need to clear the pipeline, and they told me GHȼ81 million. If you look at the amount that we spend on the energy sector through the budget, you put the key ministries together…it far surpasses them.

“I got a bit demoralised initially, and I was thinking, how can we solve this problem, and looking at the currency, even if we were to increase the tariff by doubling it, you still would have those challenges, and so the beginning was very tough,” he said.

John Jinapor expressed optimism about a turnaround in the energy sector, citing ongoing reforms and negotiations that he believes will stabilise the industry if sustained.

“We started working, and I can say, looking at where we were and where we are today, we have made significant progress. If we can keep on that trajectory, I am very sure we can turn around the corner, and you couldn’t have got a better topic…addressing Ghana’s energy sector challenges for economic transformation.

“My understanding of economic transformation is that we want to anchor the economy. We want to set it on a sound footing so that there is long-term sustainability in terms of the gains that we make,” the minister remarked.

“We are renegotiating with some of the IPPs, and we believe that under the leadership of Ben and co, who are spearheading that agenda for us, we will be able to come to some very favourable terms with the IPPs so that we can have a win-win situation,” John Jinapor added.

Ghana scored early through talented prodigy Benjamin Tsivanyo, but Ivory Coast pushed back Ghana scored early through talented prodigy Benjamin Tsivanyo, but Ivory Coast pushed back

Ghana failed to make the final of the 2025 WAFU Zone B U20 Boys Cup on Sunday after losing 2-1 to Ivory Coast in their semi-final showdown.

The Black Satellites, as they are called, locked horns with the Young Elephants today at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, where the tournament is being played in Ghana to fight for a place in the final.

Ghana scored early through talented prodigy Benjamin Tsivanyo, but Ivory Coast pushed back and scored to make it 1-1 before the break.

After recess, a fierce battle ensued between the two teams in their bid to find the net to claim victory.

Defending champions Ivory Coast managed to score despite Ghana seeing a lot of the ball as the Young Elephants defended gallantly to cruise to a 2-1 win at full-time.

The victory sees Ivory Coast going through to the final and setting up a date with Nigeria while spoiling Ghana’s plan of winning the WAFU Zone B U20 Boys Cup on home soil.

Meanwhile, Ghana and Niger will also clash in the third-place playoff match.

Both the third-place playoff match and the final will be played on Wednesday, July 23.

Former Minister of Health, Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye, has disclosed that prior to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially handing over power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the party received intelligence about an alleged plot by some NDC members to attack prominent NPP figures.

Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV on July 18, 2025, Okoe-Boye claimed that the alleged plot targeted high-profile NPP members, including Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (former Communications Minister), Godfred Dame (former Attorney General), and Hawa Koomson (former MP for Awutu Senya East), among others.

According to Okoe-Boye, the intelligence gathered by National Security was so alarming that then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo personally considered calling then-President-elect John Dramani Mahama to address the matter.

“NDC members had promised to attack NPP members, including Godfred Dame, Hawa Koomson, Ursula Owusu, and other prominent figures. We received that intel from National Security, and it was very dangerous. The report was so bad that President Akufo-Addo said he would personally call Mahama to confront him about it,” Okoe-Boye said.

Okoe-Boye further revealed that Akufo-Addo instructed then-National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah, and the transitional team to engage the NDC leadership to avert what could have turned into a violent confrontation.

“Akufo-Addo ordered Kan Dapaah to meet with the transitional team to resolve the issue because, if not handled well, it could have turned bloody,” he added.

ghana news Intelligence Bureau personnel trained in counter terrorism

0

Thirty-five personnel from the National Investigation Bureau Counterterrorism Directorate (NIB-CTD) have graduated after completing a six-week capacity-building programme in counterterrorism.

The programme was supported by the United States (US) Government and meant to bolster the knowledge of the beneficiaries in dealing with acts of terrorism.

At the graduation ceremony held in Accra yesterday, the personnel were presented with certificates, while the directorate was given 20 laptop computers and printers.

The training concludes the first-ever extended modular counterterrorism initiative for the NIB Counterterrorism Directorate.

The comprehensive programme, which was facilitated by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) experts and international prosecutors, covered critical areas including counterterrorism investigations, operations and legal frameworks.

They were taken through counter terrorism investigation, intelligence operations, Interview and Interrogation Techniques, Report Writing and Documentation Standards, Investigating Terrorist Financing and Emerging Technologies, Legal framework for CT prosecution and Human Rights Compliance.

Tribute

The Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Accra, Rolf A. Olson, said the event was not just a celebration of the knowledge and skills gained over the past six weeks; it was also a tribute to the strength of the security partnership between the United States and Ghana.

From terrorist plots to cyber fraud and drug trafficking, he said today’s threats were not confined by borders.

Mr Olson said Ghana and the US had built an impressive record of cooperation to address those shared security concerns and that “Our collaboration continues to be a model for the region.”

“In just the past few months, Ghana has successfully extradited several high-profile transnational criminals to face justice in the United States.

These actions, whether related to cyber-enabled fraud, money laundering, or narcotics trafficking, demonstrate the Mahama administration’s principled commitment to the rule of law and its determination to ensure that no individual is beyond the reach of justice.

They also make both of our countries safer,” he said.

Cases

“Extradition cases are not always simple, but when both parties are committed to due process and timely actions, they can often be completed.

We remain steadfast in our support for Ghana’s efforts to hold all persons accountable under the law, regardless of status or office,” Mr Olson said.

The course and this graduation, he said, were part of a broader, long-term effort to empower Ghana’s security institutions to detect, disrupt and dismantle terrorism threats and that over the past several years, the US government, through the FBI, Department of Justice, and State Department, had delivered a suite of trainings covering counterterrorism law, intelligence operations, interview techniques, and courtroom evidence handling.

Professional growth

For his part, the Director-General of the NIB, Charles A. Kipo, said the training would ensure continuous professional growth, specialisation and alignment with the evolving needs of the bureau.

He said the training had significantly enhanced the capabilities of “our personnel, enabling us to better address the complex security challenges we face.

The equipment, he said, would undoubtedly bolster the NIB’s efforts to gather and analyse intelligence, ultimately contributing to a safer and more secure environment for our citizens.

“I would like to extend my appreciation to the Embassy staff for their tireless efforts in facilitating this support. Your dedication to fostering cooperation and collaboration between our agencies is truly commendable,” Mr Kipo said.

Volta Regional Minister outlines development agenda to Regional House of Chiefs

0

James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, has presented his three-point agenda for the development of the region to the Volta Regional House of Chiefs during a formal visit by him and the Regional Coordinating Council

He presented his agenda during the first Volta Regional House of Chiefs Meeting in the year in Ho on Friday July 18.

Mr. Gunu said the visit offered an important platform to share his development vision and engage the House on key regional priorities. His three-point agenda include promoting peace and security to position the Volta Region as the most attractive investment destination in Ghana and beyond.

He also mentioned strengthening local governance by enhancing the capacity of Municipal and District Assemblies to deliver on their core mandates, especially local economic development and job creation.

The last point was accelerating development through partnerships by collaborating with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to realize President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for the Volta Region.

Mr. Gunu said the government’s 2025 national theme, “Stability, Growth and Prosperity for All,” challenges citizens and leaders alike to stay proactive, united, and focused.

He noted that the Volta Region is already aligning this vision with tangible action. Among key developments underway, he mentioned:

Ongoing work on the Eastern Corridor Road, rehabilitation of major feeder roads, and the modernization of key commercial hubs such as the Aflao Market Complex to stimulate border trade and regional integration.

Phase Two of the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project, awarded to Amandi Holdings, has begun to address the long-standing issue of tidal waves.

In agriculture, the Kenaf-Malaysia partnership is set to transform the sector with large-scale kenaf cultivation, creating thousands of green jobs and boosting industrial processing aligned with the export diversification drive.

The 2025 Budget’s 24-Hour Economy Policy promises significant benefits for Volta Region, including new agro-processing centers, extended public services, and energy solutions to support SMEs and emerging industrial parks.

He added that the upcoming Volta Trade and Investment Fair 2025 will feature a 24-hour operation on specific days—making it the first of its kind in Ghana.

Additionally, acres of land in Adaklu have already been secured for the development of an industrial park, with more lands expected to be acquired across other districts.

Touching on tourism, the Minister announced that several tourist and heritage sites will be upgraded to attract investment and celebrate the region’s rich cultural heritage.

However, Mr. Gunu stressed that sustainable development hinges on a peaceful and united traditional leadership, lamenting the growing number of unresolved chieftaincy disputes across the region. He appealed to the Judicial Committee of the House of Chiefs to fast-track resolutions.

“The government is prepared to support alternative dispute resolution mechanisms and logistical support, but we also encourage dialogue and unity,” he said.

“We must remind ourselves that we share a common mission—to build a Volta Region were tradition powers transformation.”

In response, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of Anfoega aTradiional Area, thanked the Minister for the visit and commended the government’s efforts so far.

He urged the administration to fast-track ongoing projects so citizens would experience the tangible benefits of voting for the NDC back into power.

He also emphasised that with many sons and daughters of the region holding key appointments, the time was ripe to bring lasting development home.

Togbui Adama III, Paramount Chief of the Somè Traditional Area, expressed gratitude for the government’s swift response during the recent tidal wave disaster in Ketu South, affecting communities like Agavedzi, Amutinu, and Salakofe.

Several other chiefs also commended the government for its leadership in the early months of the administration, expressing hope for accelerated progress through continued collaboration between traditional leadership and government.

Details of why Asiedu Nketiah changed his name from John to Johnson

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has revealed the interesting story behind why he changed his first name from John to Johnson in 1970.

Speaking in an interview on UTV’s Adekye Nsroma on July 18, 2025, Asiedu Nketiah recounted that the change was necessitated by the constant ridicule he faced as a young boy in school.

According to him, when he was first admitted to a Presbyterian school, the admissions catechist gave him the name John. At the time, he said, he had no issues with the name until he became the best student in a common entrance exam to enter JHS.

Asiedu Nketiah explained that after completing class six, he sat for a common entrance examination along with pupils from about ten other schools in the area. He topped all the schools, which surprised many of his peers.

However, instead of celebrating his success, some of his classmates used his name to mock him.

“So, during the admission, the catechist gave me John, and that was the name I used in my early age education. So, when I topped the exams, they didn’t understand how someone called ‘John’ could be the best. They started teasing me, calling me ‘John’ to make fun of me, like how people refer to you as John, which means useless kind of,” he narrated.

Asiedu Nketiah said the constant teasing became unbearable, forcing him to modify his name.

“Because of the insults, I decided to change my name from John to Johnson. I felt Johnson sounded more respectable than John,” he added with a smile.

Since then, the NDC chairman has been officially known as Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, a name he has carried throughout his political and public life.
