DBG to roll out GH¢500 million support for agriculture, economic sectors

0

Dr. Randolph Nsor-Ambala, CEO of Development Bank Ghana Dr. Randolph Nsor-Ambala, CEO of Development Bank Ghana

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Development Bank Ghana (DBG), Dr. Randolph Nsor-Ambala, says the Bank will this year roll out GH¢500 million to support Ghana’s agricultural ecosystem.

According to him, the money is to strengthen and support Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the agriculture value chain and consequently rejuvenate the economy by improving food security, enhance productivity and create employment opportunities.

Dr. Nsor-Ambala made this known when he delivered a speech at the Kwahu Business Forum in Mpraeso, Kwahu over the weekend.

The Forum which was under the theme: “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector” forms part of government’s vision of building a more resilient and inclusive economy through SME empowerment.

The Forum had President Mahama as its most prominent guest. It also brought together various business owners, industrialists, investors, start-ups, various financial institutions including banks and captains of industry to engage stakeholders, discuss policy interventions and explore strategies to enhance Ghana’s business landscape.

The DBG approach focuses on sustainable transformation rather than isolated interventions, ensuring that capital flows to where it can have the greatest impact on economic development.

Over the past years, DBG has provided GH¢1.62 billion in loans to over 650 businesses, with tenures up to 15 years. These investments are projected to generate over 18,000 direct jobs across the country.

The Development Bank currently has active portfolios in 13 regions and will be aiming to cover all of Ghana’s 16 regions this year.

In his remarks at the event, Dr. Nsor-Ambala stated that “what we exist to do is to provide a comprehensive set of support for businesses. Most people would know us for affordable long-term loans but beyond that we do a lot more.

As we speak, we are working with our partner financial institutions to get them to be able to understand the agriculture sector to evaluate it properly. The default position for most financial institutions is to see any such business case as risky and dangerous to invest in.”

“Through the technical assistance programmes we provide, first to the businesses themselves and secondly to the financial institutions with whom we work, we have been able to build capacities within the financial institutions for them to understand especially the agriculture sector to be able to value it properly. Related to that we are working with our development partners around putting in place mechanisms for partial guarantee for the agriculture sector as well an agric-insurance programme that will further reduce the risk associated with the sector”, he added.

Dr. Nsor-Ambala explained that the development finance institution, DBG, is rolling out GH¢500 million to support SMEs in the agriculture value chain to unlock growth potential and ensure sustainable development right from input suppliers and farmers to processors and distributors.

He added that this support was also in alignment with the government’s broader economic recovery agenda, which includes broadening access to affordable financing for local businesses and offering targeted support to SMEs through tailored financial solutions and technical assistance.

“DBG is about inclusive opportunity, that is, creating jobs for our youth, building sustainable businesses, and positioning Ghana as a competitive force in African and global markets” he reassured.

According to the DBG CEO, the Bank’s main areas of focus, in terms of providing support, are ensuring food security through the support the Bank provides to the agriculture value chain, be it farming or agribusiness and others, as well as the manufacturing sector with a focus on import substituting and export.

The Bank also has a value proposition dedicated to the ICT sector and supports human capital development by focusing on health and education. Infrastructure including transport is also a key DBG focus area.

DBG’s commitment to empowering local businesses is not only about fostering innovation and job creation but to also position the private sector as a key economic driver of the economy which contributes meaningfully to national economic transformation.

Development Bank Ghana is a wholesale financial institution established by the Government of Ghana. Since its inception three years ago, DBG has facilitated significant disbursements through Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs), unlocking projects and value chains to empower several businesses across agribusiness, manufacturing, ICT, and high-value services.

The Bank has received funds from the World Bank, European Investment Bank, Kreditanstalt Für Wiederaufbau (KfW), and the African Development Bank.

Tanzania unveils natural breakthrough for hair regrowth and skin rejuvenation

A 12-year scientific study by the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute has led to a discovery A 12-year scientific study by the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute has led to a discovery

A 12-year scientific study by the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (Tawiri) has led to the discovery of a natural remedy that stimulates hair regrowth and prevents hair breakage – a major breakthrough offering new hope for individuals suffering from hair loss.

The announcement was made on Tuesday April 22, 2025 in Arusha, marking a milestone in Tawiri’s research on endangered medicinal plants with traditional healing properties, which began in 2013.

Derived from the bark of the Mporojo tree (Albizia anthelmintica), locally known as “wormwood,” the hair treatment was discovered through close collaboration with local communities in Ngorongoro District, including the Maasai, Hadzabe, Datoga, and Iraqw ethnic groups.

“This is a significant development for people facing baldness, thinning hair, or breakage. Scientific testing has confirmed that Albizia anthelmintica possesses unique properties that promote hair regrowth and prevent hair loss,” said Tawiri’s director of research, Dr Julius Keyyu.

The formulation has been officially registered under the name Composition for Hair Growth Stimulation or Hair Loss Prevention Using an Extract of Albizia anthelmintica. It has also demonstrated potential in treating intestinal worms, malaria, and leg pain through the use of its roots, he said.

Tawiri has licensed the technology to South Korea’s Winwik Enterprise Ltd, which will manufacture a range of hair care products – including shampoos, oils, and treatments – for international and local markets.

Due to the increasing demand and medicinal value of the Mporojo tree, Tawiri has launched additional research on sustainable cultivation practices to mitigate the risk of extinction resulting from excessive harvesting in the wild.

In a parallel finding, researchers have identified a skin-lightening and anti-ageing compound derived from the Mugufe plant (Maerua edulis), known in the Datoga language as Ekwida. This formulation reduces wrinkles and enhances skin brightness, and has been registered under the name Composition for Skin-Lightening and Improving Wrinkles Using Extract of Maerua edulis.

Unlike the hair remedy, the skincare product has yet to be commercialised. Tawiri said it’s currently seeking partners and investors in the cosmetics industry to support its development and distribution.

Representing the director general of Tawiri, Mr Rogastian Msafiri said the broader objective of the research was to conserve traditional medicinal plants at risk of extinction by integrating them into botanical gardens and ensuring their sustainable use for community benefit.

The research project was a collaborative effort between Tawiri, the Institute of Traditional Medicine (ITM) under the Ministry of Health, and South Korea’s National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR).

IMF urges tough reforms for countries facing debt distress

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is urging countries grappling with unsustainable public debt to make tough but necessary decisions to restore debt sustainability.

Speaking at the 2025 IMF/World Bank Group Spring Meetings, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced plans to introduce a structured guide for countries undergoing debt restructuring, while continuing efforts to stabilize their economies.

“Countries with unsustainable debt should act proactively to address these challenges, including making the difficult choice to pursue debt restructuring when necessary. I’m pleased to announce that the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable will soon publish a playbook to support country authorities in their decision-making process,” she said.

She further advised emerging market economies to maintain exchange rate flexibility as a buffer against economic shocks. “Policymakers can look to the IMF’s Integrated Policy Framework for insights into how and when temporary measures may be warranted,” she added.

Georgieva reiterated the need for vigilance from central banks in managing inflation expectations and emphasized safeguarding both banking and non-banking financial institutions.

“Central bankers must keep an eagle eye on the data—including higher inflation expectations in some cases, or falling inflation in others. In finance, strong regulation and supervision remain essential to keep banks safe, and rising risks from non-banks must be monitored and contained,” Georgieva emphasized.

Suspension of Chief Justice doesn’t mean she’s guilty – Kwakye Ofosu

0

The Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has clarified that President John Mahama’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, does not in any way suggest she is guilty of the allegations brought against her.

Speaking on JoyNews’  on Tuesday, April 22, Mr Kwakye Ofosu stated that the suspension is a constitutional step meant to allow due process, and not a verdict on the Chief Justice’s conduct.

“The President has not, by this step, that the Chief Justice is guilty of any offense or any of the claims contained in the petition,” he stated.

“The President is only enjoined by law after having determined prima facie to set up a committee to look into the allegations and offer the Chief Justice every available opportunity to answer to these claims in detail.”

According to him, three separate petitions were submitted to the President, each alleging various forms of wrongdoing by the Chief Justice and calling for her removal.

He explained that Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution lays out a clear process for such situations, which the President has strictly adhered to.

“In doing so, the president rightfully requested the Chief Justice to present responses after she had been served with copies of the petition. The Chief Justice did this.

“The president then went back to consult the Council of State to determine whether, when you set the responses of the chief justice against the allegations contained in the petitions, those petitions are frivolous or they merit further scrutiny,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu said.

He further highlighted that the formation of a committee to investigate the allegations is a constitutional requirement and is composed according to the law, with two Supreme Court Justices and three members who are not lawyers or part of the Council of State.

“The Constitution requires that this process be consultative. And so you find that at every step of the way, the President has consulted the Council of State,” he added.

“The President has kept faith with the Constitution and done everything by the book and ensured that his actions are well grounded in the 1992 constitution.”

“I think it is a complete charade,” Godfred Yeboah Dame told the BBC.

“It’s the biggest assault on the [judiciary] in the nation’s history, the greatest assault on the independence of the judiciary under the constitutional dispensation of this country.”

Ms Torkornoo is Ghana’s third female chief justice and was nominated in 2023 by former president Nana Akufo-Addo.

It is her responsibility to oversee the administration of justice in Ghana.

According to news agency Reuters, Ms Torkornoo survived a removal request earlier this year when former President Akufo-Addo said a petition to have her dismissed had “several deficiencies”.

Copies of the three recently filed petitions against Ms Torkornoo were not initially made available to her.

But some lawyers argued that withholding the documents was a violation of Ms Torkornoo’s right to a fair hearing.

Copies of the petition were subsequently made available to the chief justice, allowing her to respond to the allegations privately and in writing.

Ms Torkornoo will be invited by the five-member committee to respond again to the petitions before a final decision is reached as to whether she should be removed from office or not.

Ghanaian President John Mahama has suspended the country’s Supreme Court chief justice – a move that marks a first in the country’s history.

Three undisclosed petitions have been filed against Gertrude Torkornoo calling for her removal while an investigation is launched.

Chief justices in Ghana enjoy security of tenure – meaning they can only be removed from office on a few grounds, which include incompetence and misbehaviour.

The content of the petitions has not been made public and she is yet to comment, while Ghana’s former attorney general has claimed her suspension is an attempt to undermine the judiciary.

“I think it is a complete charade,” Godfred Yeboah Dame told the BBC.

Why does seeing a feminine man trigger you?

0

Popular socialite Efia Odo has been engaged in a back-and-forth with netizens over her stance on homosexuality.

The controversy began after a video surfaced from the recently held Porial’s Pitch Fair, in which an attendee expressed concern about the number of effeminate young men present at the event.

Reacting to the video on her social media platforms, Efia Odo questioned why people are so triggered by the presence of effeminate men.

Reacting to the video on her social media, Efia Odo questioned why people are triggered by the sight of effeminate men, stating that their hatred might be a cover for hidden attraction to men.

“It’s always what people are not saying that is louder than what they are saying. Why does seeing a man who behaves feminine trigger you? Why is your attention so much on men and not women? Are you attracted to that, so you’re masking it with ‘hate’?” she asked.

Her comments sparked uproar, with some netizens questioning whether she condoned the actions of certain influencers who had reportedly engaged in queer sexual activities.

In response, Efia Odo bluntly questioned why people are so concerned about the sexual lives of others when they are also engaged in sexual activities.

“Should you also be lashed for masturbating and having sex before marriage and lying or stealing?” she quizzed.

“Why are you concerned about another persons trumu? Is it your trumu? Don’t you know what you do against yourself is harmful than worrying about what someone else is doing to themselves?” she retorted.

Quoting the bible, Efia Odo asked her followers to rather be focused on their own shortcomings instead of being fixated on the activities of others.

“The Bible speaks against many things including homosexuality. Why is your main focus on homosexuals? Is it because inherently you are attracted to what you’re afraid of ? The Bible says that are righteousness is not received thru the works of the law but by faith in Christ ! Your righteousness by the law is as a filthy rag! Your righteousness is given to you by your faith in Christ,” she posted.

The advice from the Council of State is ‘poisonous’

0

A Former Deputy Attorney General, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah A Former Deputy Attorney General, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah

Former Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah has raised serious concerns over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the action as “surprising” and labeling the Council of State’s advice as “poisonous.”

He also expressed strong disapproval of the grounds on which the decision was made, warning of its broader implications for Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“I’m rather surprised at the suspension of the Chief Justice, even though there was such a step to be taken,” he said during an interview with JoyNews on April 22, 2025.

“I’m surprised because the president is not bound by the advice of the Council of State. The president may decide not to follow that advice, which, in this case, indicated that the Chief Justice should step aside while the matter is being heard by the panel,” he added.

He continued, “But that’s the president’s decision. I see the advice of the Council of State as being very poisonous.”

Tuah-Yeboah also criticised the role played by the Council of State in this situation, suggesting their recommendation could disrupt the balance among the three arms of government: the Executive, Judiciary, and Legislature.

“We have to be very careful about how we treat the head of any arm of government in Ghana,” he cautioned.

“We have three main arms: the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary, and the expectation is that the Council of State will act in a way that preserves balance. There may be instances where they advise the president to suspend the Chief Justice, but the grounds for such advice must be weighty, not hollow,” Tuah-Yeboah added.

He concluded by expressing disappointment in the reasons behind the Chief Justice’s suspension, based on the information made public.

“I’m carefully reviewing the grounds. From what we’ve read, if these are the reasons for recommending that the Chief Justice be suspended pending investigation, then I am deeply disappointed in that decision,” he said.

IMF downgrades global growth to 2.8% in 2025

0

Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has downgraded its global growth forecast to 2.8% for 2025, a significant drop from the 3.3% forecast made in January.

This update is contained in the IMF’s April 2025 World Economic Outlook (WEO), which cites escalating trade tensions, particularly the United States’ announcement of a wave of new tariffs, followed by countermeasures from trading partners, as major contributors.

These developments have caused ripple effects across global supply chains and dampened investor sentiment.

The report also highlights mounting policy uncertainty as a key factor behind the slowdown.

“Since the release of the January 2025 WEO Update, a series of new tariff measures by the United States and countermeasures by its trading partners have been announced and implemented, culminating in near-universal U.S. tariffs on April 2 and bringing effective tariff rates to levels not seen in a century.

“This alone is a major negative shock to growth. The unpredictability with which these measures have been unfolding also has a negative impact on economic activity and the outlook. At the same time, it makes it more difficult than usual to make assumptions that would constitute a basis for an internally consistent and timely set of projections,” the report stated.

In advanced economies, growth is now expected to slow to 1.4% in 2025, with the U.S. economy seeing a notable downgrade, now projected at 1.8%, nearly a full percentage point below previous estimates.

In emerging markets and developing economies, growth is projected to slow to 3.7% in 2025 and 3.9% in 2026, with significant downgrades for countries most affected by recent trade measures, such as China.

The IMF flagged intensifying downside risks, warning that a deeper trade war, rising financial instability, and fragile policy buffers could further deteriorate the global economic outlook.

Vulnerable emerging markets, in particular, could face capital flight, currency pressures, and increasing debt burdens.

The Fund also noted that a reversal or de-escalation of current trade policies could offer a reprieve and potentially revive global growth.

Ghanaian midfielder, Thomas Partey Ghanaian midfielder, Thomas Partey

GhanaWeb Feature by Benjamin Sackey

Ghanaian midfielder, Thomas Partey has been integral to Arsenal in the 2024/2025 UEFA Champions League season as the team aims for the title this season.

The player is one of the team’s best performers, especially in the midfield, in the 12 games the team has played so far in the European competition.

This piece puts the spotlight on Thomas Partey’s performances in the matches he has played for Arsenal in the UCL this season

Inter Milan

Partey was key for the Gunners as they lost to Milan by 1-0. With a 7/10 rating, he lost possession in a dangerous spot early on, but grew into the game after that and was probably Arsenal’s standout player in the first half.

Sporting Lisbon

Partey scored 8/10 in Arsenal’s victory against Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.

He dominated the game in the first half, bullying the Sporting midfield and using the ball intelligently. A superb chipped ball over the top got Saka in behind for the second goal.

Shakhtar Donetsk

Partey was the dominant player on the pitch with an 8/10 rating. He controlled the game in the first half, both with the ball and without it, getting back to his very best, which is a good sign. He moved to right-back for the second half after White went off.

AS Monaco

The Black Stars midfielder scored a 7/10 rating, filling in well at right-back. It was a solid display from the player, who got forward when he could.

PSV Eindhoven

Thomas Partey had a 6/10 rating with an average performance. He was decent in the midfield but did concede the penalty with an unnecessary foul on de Jong in the round of sixteen games. He was booked for the offense before being withdrawn with 20 minutes remaining.

Real Madrid

Partey recorded an impressive 8/10 rating and was calm and composed. He moved the ball well and swept up in front of the defense. It was an excellent display. He had a phenomenal performance in Arsenal’s big win over Real Madrid in the UCL quarter-final first leg.

The former Atlético Madrid man played at full throttle, having 77 touches and completing 61 out of 66 attempted passes. The Ghanaian made seven passes into the final third, recorded six ball recoveries, won four out of seven ground duels, completed two out of two long passes, and made one interception.

He followed it up with a commanding performance in the second leg, playing a key role in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

The Ghanaian midfielder completed the full 90 minutes and ended the match with 100% pass accuracy, making him the most accurate passer on the pitch. Defensively, Partey recorded three blocks, three clearances, three recoveries, one interception, and won four out of seven ground duels.

Offensively, he completed all 21 of his attempted passes, created one chance, had one shot attempt, made three passes into the final third, and completed his only attempted dribble.

Arsenal advanced to the last four of the competition with a 5-1 aggregate scoreline, having won the first leg 3-0. They will face French giants Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.

KGL Foundation hosts EasterFest Food Bank in New Takoradi

0

Accra, April 22, GNA – More than a thousand people gathered at Esoro Park in New Takoradi on Easter Monday to take part in EasterFest 2025, a food bank experience organised by the KGL Foundation.

The event brought together individuals and families from all walks of life for a day of hot meals, community bonding, and shared celebration.

The Foundation’s presence in New Takoradi followed a similar initiative held in Kumasi during Eid, where hundreds of Muslim community members were served warm meals in the spirit of giving.

Recognising the importance of these festive seasons, the Foundation saw Easter as another moment to stand with the people — this time, the Western Region.

EasterFest was attended by some traditional rulers, the Assemblymember for the area, and key members of the New Takoradi community. Their presence underscored the collective belief that compassion, especially in moments of celebration, is a shared responsibility.

Mr. Nii Annorbah-Sarpei, the Programmes Manager, speaking on behalf of the CEO of the KGL Foundation said, “We believe in uplifting Ghanaians wherever we may find ourselves.”

He said these moments, whether during Eid in Kumasi or Easter in New Takoradi allowed them to connect with real people, listen to their stories, and stand with them in love and solidarity.

From the early morning hours, community members began gathering at Esoro Park, creating a festive buzz even before the first meals were served.

Laughter filled the space as children played freely, and elders shared conversations over plates of traditional food.

He said the event was more than a food bank, it became a safe, joyful space for families to come together.

He said the KGL Foundation continued to show its commitment to creating meaningful, on-the-ground impact across the country, with health, youth empowerment, and community wellbeing at the heart of its work.

CJ’s suspension will restore judiciary’s glory – Tanko-Computer

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has thrown its full support behind the suspension of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, with the party describing the move as a necessary step toward restoring credibility and respect to the judiciary.

The Deputy Director of Elections and Information Technology for the NDC, Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, defended the decision in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Tuesday, saying the suspension is in line with efforts to cleanse and dignify the judicial system.

“In order to sanctify the judiciary and bring them upstream, we must do the right thing,” he said. “We want to bring back the glory of the judiciary.”

He stressed that the judiciary must earn public trust through impartial and unquestionable rulings.

“They must be respected, and their decisions will be respected henceforth—not the kind of decisions they’ve been giving that everyone keeps questioning,” he noted.

Dr. Tanko-Computer further commended President John Mahama for acting decisively, stating that the NDC is “very much happy” with the suspension.

Kwakye Ofosu justifies Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo

0

Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has defended President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, insisting it is grounded firmly in constitutional provisions.

The suspension comes after a prima facie case was established in relation to three petitions calling for the Chief Justice’s removal from office. The decision, taken in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, sets the stage for a formal inquiry into Ghana’s highest-ranking judicial officer.

A five-member committee has since been constituted under Article 146(6) to investigate the matter.

In an interview with Citi Newsroom’s Sammi Wiafe, Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that the President’s action should not be interpreted as a declaration of guilt, but rather a necessary constitutional step.

“I’m not sure how abiding by the Constitution becomes a bad precedent. President Mahama took an oath to stay true and loyal and abide by the 1992 Constitution.

“That is what he has done in this instance, so I’m not able to appreciate how anyone can say that if the President acts in accordance with the Constitution it is a bad precedent,” he argued.

Kwakye Ofosu’s remarks come amid growing public discourse surrounding the suspension, which many see as a critical test of the country’s commitment to judicial accountability and constitutional rule.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie to serve as Acting Chief Justice – Martin Kpebu

0

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is the senior judge of the Supreme Court Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is the senior judge of the Supreme Court

Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has indicated that Supreme Court Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the most senior judge on the bench, is expected to step in as Acting Chief Justice following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

According to Kpebu, this appointment would see Justice Baffoe-Bonnie temporarily assume leadership of the judiciary until a substantive Chief Justice is named.

Following consultations with the Council of State and in accordance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution, President John Dramani Mahama has concluded that there is sufficient basis to proceed with three petitions filed against Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

As a result, the Chief Justice has been formally suspended from her duties pending further action.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based TV3 on April 22, 2025, Martin Kpebu explained that Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, as the most senior judge on the Supreme Court, is conventionally the candidate to take over as Acting Chief Justice.

“There’s a specific provision for it in the constitution. It is explicitly written that, in the absence of the Chief Justice, the most senior justice of the Supreme Court takes over. So it means that Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is the Acting Chief Justice, there can be no two ways about that,” he said.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, born September 11, 1962, in Cape Coast, Ghana, was sworn in as Ghana’s Chief Justice on June 12, 2023, by then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, becoming the third female in the role.

She joined the judiciary in 2004, rose to the Supreme Court in 2019, and has driven judicial reforms like the E-Justice system. Educated at the University of Ghana and abroad, she is also an author and poet.

China stands ready to share its latest advanced technologies and technical knowledge with Africa China stands ready to share its latest advanced technologies and technical knowledge with Africa

During a pivotal meeting at the headquarters of the Africa-China Centre for Policy and Advisory (ACCPA) in Accra, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, underscored China’s commitment to green development and the sharing of advanced technology and technical knowledge with African countries.

Ambassador Tong made these remarks during a courtesy meeting at the ACCPA office, emphasizing that China’s leadership in green development is not only rooted in the latest advancements in technology but also in a spirit of mutual learning and cooperation.

He highlighted that China’s experience in eco-friendly modernization and its portfolio of cutting-edge green technologies are available for African nations to study and adapt as they pursue their own sustainable development goals.

Drawing on the outcomes of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing, Ambassador Tong noted that green development was identified as one of the core pillars of the Ten Partnership Actions adopted to guide China-Africa cooperation in the coming years.

He pointed to China’s willingness to support African partners with technical expertise, clean energy solutions, and training opportunities designed to accelerate the continent’s transition to a low-carbon, sustainable future.

“China stands ready to share its latest advanced technologies and technical knowledge with African countries,” Ambassador Tong stated.

“From clean energy projects to sustainable mining practices, our goal is to empower our partners to achieve modernization that is both environmentally responsible and economically inclusive.”

He further explained that China’s approach is grounded in the belief that no country should be left behind in the global drive toward modernization and environmental stewardship.

The meeting provided a platform for open dialogue on how Ghana and other African countries can harness China’s technological advances to support their own green development ambitions.

Why Asante Kotoko sacked Prosper Narteh Ogum – Sarfo Duku explains

Prosper Narteh Ogum was a coach of Asante Kotoko Prosper Narteh Ogum was a coach of Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko’s decision to part ways with head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum just a few games before the end of the season has sparked widespread discussion among fans and analysts alike.

While official statements have been limited, the club’s Communications Director, Samuel Sarfo Duku, has provided insight into the circumstances surrounding Ogum’s departure.

In an interview with the club’s newspaper, Daily Porcupine, Duku discussed the factors that led to this significant change in the club’s leadership, exploring the internal dynamics and decisions that culminated in Ogum’s exit.

According to Duku, the club granted Ogum full control over player recruitment, with management providing the necessary support.

However, as the players struggled to perform, Duku emphasised that the responsibility for improving the team’s performance lay with the technical team, particularly the coach.

In essence, the poor results were viewed as a reflection of Ogum’s inability to maximize the potential of his squad, ultimately leading to his departure.

“We gave him complete freedom to recruit players of his choice, so if the players aren’t performing and management is doing its part, and it’s clear that the issue is performance-related, who is responsible for improving the team’s results? It is the technical team,” he said.

Despite this setback, Duku reassured fans that the club remains committed to securing trophies by the end of the season, promising to do everything possible to stay on track for success.

“We will continue to do our utmost to win the double, as promised. As I speak to you now, we are still on pace, even though it has become a bit difficult, especially with the league title. We had led for weeks, but now we’ve lost the top spot, trailing by a six-point margin,” he added.

Raphinha’s Late Penalty Seals Barcelona Comeback

Raphinha

Barcelona produced a dramatic comeback to defeat Celta Vigo 4-3, with Raphinha scoring a penalty deep into stoppage time to secure all three points at the Camp Nou.

The Brazilian forward converted from the spot in the eighth minute of added time after VAR confirmed a foul on Dani Olmo inside the box. The late goal completed a thrilling turnaround for the La Liga leaders.

Barcelona had fallen behind 3-1 by the 62nd minute, despite taking an early lead through Ferran Torres. Celta’s Borja Iglesias responded with a clinical hat-trick, putting the visitors on course for a surprise victory.

However, Hansi Flick’s side responded with urgency, netting twice in quick succession through Dani Olmo and Raphinha to level the match. Barcelona maintained pressure, and just when Celta appeared to have secured a point, the VAR decision handed the hosts a final chance.

Raphinha made no mistake from the spot, sealing a vital win that puts Barcelona four points at the top of La Liga following Real Madrid’s hard-earned 1-0 win against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Kwasi Kwarteng, has criticised the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for his recent emotional reaction on TV over illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.

According to him, the minister’s public display is a sign of weak leadership.

“Nobody should pamper him for what he did. He has been appointed as a minister to solve problems, not to blackmail people through emotions. That is not what leadership is about.

“He is supposed to provide solutions to problems, not to sit on TV and cry. If he feels he is tired, he should resign,” he noted.

The NPP communicator stressed the need for the government to declare a state of emergency to tackle the galamsey menace.

“This is a gentleman who said that as soon as they came into power, they were going to declare a state of emergency.

“What happened to that? How many days have they been in power? Over 100 days. You don’t need two weeks to declare a state of emergency, it has more to do with executive power.

“To the extent that they hid the elections and branded Akufo-Addo as the chief miner, people even said the headquarters of galamsey is Kyebi,” he stated.

During a recent press briefing, the minister broke down in tears as he described the extent of the damage caused by galamsey in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

Jordan Ayew, Fatawu Issahaku Relegated With Leicester City

0

Fatawu Issahaku and Jordan Ayew

Ghana internationals Jordan Ayew and Fatawu Issahaku have been relegated from the English Premier League following Leicester City’s 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool at the King Power Stadium.

A second-half goal by Trent Alexander-Arnold sealed the Foxes’ fate, confirming that Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side will compete in the EFL Championship next season. The result extended Leicester’s poor home form, with the club yet to score a league goal at home in 2025.

Fatawu Issahaku, who has been sidelined since November with an ACL injury, faces his first relegation from the top flight. Jordan Ayew, however, makes history as the first Ghanaian player to be relegated from the Premier League on three separate occasions.

Elsewhere, Kamaldeen Sulemana will also play in the Championship next season, following Southampton’s confirmed relegation earlier this month.

The demotion of three Ghanaian internationals marks a difficult season for the country’s representation in the Premier League.

God should strike down greedy politicians, individuals involved in galamsey

Rev Steve Mensah is the General Overseer of the Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry Rev Steve Mensah is the General Overseer of the Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry

The General Overseer of the Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry, Reverend Steve Mensah, has invoked the wrath of God upon those responsible for the pollution and destruction of water bodies and forest reserves through illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as galamsey.

While delivering a sermon to his congregants during Easter Sunday church service in a video shared by nkonkonsa on Instagram, the man of God addressed the devastating impact of galamsey activities on numerous water bodies that once served as vital sources of clean water for various communities.

He called on God to ‘wipe out’ those who, out of greed, permit these illegal mining operations to persist.

He strongly condemned the actions, criticising individuals who politicise such a serious issue and emphasising the gravity of the situation.

Rev Steve Mensah also stated that the actions of illegal miners are equivalent to committing genocide against the country.

“Those who for the greed of money for themselves and their families are destroying our water bodies, may God kill all of them. The people are committing genocide, poisoning our waters and we are looking on and playing politics around it, it’s evil and barbaric,” he said.

Rev Mensah went on to allege the involvement of certain politicians and chiefs in illegal mining activities, which he said are causing irreparable damage to the nation and its people.

According to him, foreigners are able to easily navigate the country and quickly engage in these unlawful practices due to the weakened and porous state of national systems and laws, enabling them to mine in water bodies without fear of consequences.

“… Some of the politicians, opinion leaders, and the chiefs are involved in the pollution of our waters and God don’t punish them for destroying our water bodies. … foreigners have entered and they are mining on our waters and we are looking on. What kind of people are we? Can you go to China and go do galamsey in China?

“Which country can you go to engage in galamsey? It shows the weakness of our system. The foreigners will come into our country, go into our forest reserve, and then mine in the water and pollute the water and we are looking on playing politics with it. Any politician, any chief, anybody in our water bodies and polluting because of the money for their pocket, poisoning our systems, may God kill them first,” he prayed.

Rev Mensah called on the government not to relent in its fight against illegal mining, urging authorities to take decisive action and enforce stringent measures against both foreigners and Ghanaian nationals involved in galamsey.

“This new government must rise up and take action. All foreigners, Chinese or otherwise, who have polluted our lands should be arrested and deported. It’s time to enforce the law,” he added.

Popular Ghanaian fashionista Osebo the Zaraman play videoPopular Ghanaian fashionista Osebo the Zaraman

Popular Ghanaian fashionista, Osebo the Zaraman, has shot down rumours that he was facing health issues abroad.

In 2024, rumours were rife on social media that the boutique owner had been battling a severe illness for months and had even undergone surgery in Italy.

Some pastors in Ghana also gave prophecies about spiritual attempts on his Osebo’s life.

In a recent development, Osebo, in an interview with ZionFelix on April 22, 2025, noted that he owes no one an explanation regarding his health issue.

“At the end of the day, I am in the country and the reason why I went abroad, I have done it. So I don’t owe anybody an explanation. I am strong and healthy as well. I thank God that whatever they said didn’t come to pass. I even saw all the prophecies the pastors said about my life. And I must admit they were all fake prophecies, he said.

Osebo the Zaraman further stated that he is not perturbed about what he referred to as lies propagated to tarnish his business and reputation.

“…there is no one under the sun who can destroy someone God has blessed. So, I don’t think no one can bring me down.”

Expose politicians found involved in galamsey

A legal practitioner and political analyst, Kwame Jantuah A legal practitioner and political analyst, Kwame Jantuah

A legal practitioner and political analyst, Kwame Jantuah, has called for decisive action in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), starting with the exposure of politicians involved in the practice.

He also called for the revocation of licenses of mining firms allegedly supporting galamsey activities, especially within forest reserves.

“Whether it’s the NDC, NPP, CPP, or PNC, any politician found to be complicit must be exposed. We cannot destroy our country; we have nowhere else to go. If this were any other country with these kinds of gold reserves, you would see how they protect them,” he stated.

“Any licensed mining firm, if they are supporting galamsey in our forest reserves, revoke their license. They have no good intentions. If found complicit, we must take action. Our water bodies are polluted. These days, we don’t even get water in our homes. Water is cut off for three, four days a week. That is a recipe for disaster,” he added while speaking on GHOne TV on April 22, 2025.

Despite Ghana’s vast gold wealth, Jantuah questioned whether it was a blessing or a curse, pointing to widespread environmental degradation, polluted rivers, and a worsening water crisis.

“The entire country is covered in gold. But is that fortunate or unfortunate? Right now, it’s unfortunate because of how we’re managing it,” he said.

Jantuah also expressed strong support for the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and urged President John Dramani Mahama to act swiftly and decisively.

“We should support the minister. The President should be seen to be taking swift action, no ifs or buts. If someone is arrested, they should face the consequences,” he said.

Government to hold talks with Gold Fields over Damang Mine transition

0

File photo of Damang Mine File photo of Damang Mine

The Ghanaian government is reportedly scheduled to meet with top executives of Gold Fields today, April 22, 2025, for high-level discussions on ensuring a seamless transition of the Damang Mine in the Western Region.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, the meeting will include senior officials from Gold Fields’ Group Head Office in South Africa.

Key agenda items include a possible extension of Gold Fields’ management of the mine prior to a complete handover to the state.

The government is reportedly open to allowing the company additional oversight time to prevent operational disruptions.

Gold Fields had earlier requested an extended transition period, and indications suggest the government may approve this, subject to specific conditions.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged Gold Fields to maintain equipment operations at the Damang Mine, with workers instructed to remain at their posts pending further directives.

Background

Earlier in April, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, announced the government’s takeover of the Damang Mine following the Minerals Commission’s refusal to extend Gold Fields’ operational permit.

However, today’s discussions could revise the transition timeline, potentially granting Gold Fields up to a year of continued management before full state control.

How Shakhtar donated €25M from Mudryk’s Chelsea move to aid Ukraine’s war against Russia

Mykhailo Mudryk is a player of Chelsea Mykhailo Mudryk is a player of Chelsea

In January 2023, Shakhtar Donetsk struck a high-profile deal to sell Mykhailo Mudryk to Chelsea for €70 million, following significant interest from several top European clubs.

Following the transfer, club CEO Sergei Palkin revealed the far-reaching impact of the fee beyond football.

In an interview, Palkin disclosed that club owner Rinat Akhmetov directed €25 million from the transfer fee to support Ukraine’s defense against Russia and provide humanitarian aid to citizens affected by the ongoing war.

The Russia–Ukraine war began with a full-scale invasion by Russia on February 24, 2022, escalating a conflict that had started in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea. Russia launched attacks from multiple fronts, aiming to seize control of major Ukrainian regions.

Ukraine responded with strong resistance under the leadership of President Zelenskyy, receiving extensive military and humanitarian support from Western allies.

The war has led to hundreds of thousands of military casualties, widespread civilian suffering, and the displacement of millions. Russia continues to occupy parts of eastern and southern Ukraine, and despite international sanctions and failed peace talks, the conflict remains unresolved.

Meanwhile, Mudryk has been provisionally suspended by the Football Association after testing positive for a banned substance. The drug in question, ‘meldonium’, was reportedly administered while he was abroad and not on club duty.

Ukraine had fixtures in Albania and Georgia during that period. Under FA regulations, Mudryk could face a ban of up to four years.

Despite maintaining his innocence, the former Shakhtar Donetsk forward is currently not training at Chelsea’s Cobham facility and is instead following a personalized fitness program from home.

Kpandai NDC youth condemn aggrieved group’s actions, call for peace and unity

0

A group calling itself the Real Concerned Youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned a press conference recently held by another group identifying as the “Concerned and Aggrieved Youth of the NDC” over the delayed selection of a District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kpandai.

During a press conference on Monday, April 21, at the constituency party office in Kpandai, the Real Concerned Youth issued a statement clarifying that their intention was not to attack anyone but to promote unity and uphold the values that bind the NDC in the district.

They emphasised their commitment to defending the party’s integrity and ensuring due process in the DCE selection.

The youth, led by Janfour Benipoumchie, reminded the public that the power to appoint a District Chief Executive rests solely with the President of the Republic.

Their position, as the Real Concerned Youth of the NDC in Kpandai, is clear and principled: “The President has the right to appoint any qualified, competent, and loyal member of the party from the three shortlisted candidates, should he deem them fit.”

“In fact, we want to remind them that 17 party members in total applied for the DCE position when the three names were published by Tamale radio. The remaining 14 aspirants and their numerous supporters did not rise up in protest. Were they fools? Don’t they also have followers? Couldn’t they have destabilised the party? They did not, because they respected the process.

“Even though it did not go their way, they still respected the process and kept faith. If those 14 had reacted with the same energy and resistance being shown now, would the three shortlisted individuals have had the peace of mind to travel to Accra for vetting? This shows the maturity and discipline of the remaining 14 aspirants. That is what we call respect and love for the party,” Janfour Benipoumchie stressed.

The youth condemned the use of derogatory language, such as “weak,” “unpopular,” or claims that someone had been “smuggled” into the process, calling such statements unfortunate, inaccurate, disrespectful, and misleading.

“Just take a look at those referring to the party leadership as weak, unpopular, and smuggled. Who among them possesses the qualities that are closer to the rank and file of the party in Kpandai? Every single individual who showed interest in this contest is a proud member of our party and has served in various capacities, sacrificed, and earned the right to be appointed as the DCE of Kpandai. We call on our colleagues to stop these baseless attacks and personal insults. We shall gain nothing by threatening each other. If anything, we weaken our party and give power to our opponents to use against us,” he added.

The group also condemned the recent attack on the Constituency Chairman, Mr. Kwame Bawa, popularly known as “Who Knows,” during the press conference held by the allegedly aggrieved youth on April 20.

They described the attack as unnecessary and disrespectful, noting that disagreements with a leader’s stance should always be addressed with respect and dignity to ensure party unity.

The Real Concerned Youth further criticised calls for the resignation of the Constituency Chairman, suggesting that such actions only served the interests of a few individuals rather than the broader party membership.

“Accusing the Constituency Chairman of betraying the constituency simply because you disagree with the process does not reflect the values of the NDC. The NDC is bigger than a few individuals’ interests. We also take serious issue with the threat issued to the President that if the President does not choose from the three names, the NDC in Kpandai will be ‘dead and buried.’ How can a few individuals from a polling station we always lose threaten the movement to appoint an individual of their interest as the DCE?” Janfour asked.

They assured the regional and national leadership that the views of the Real Concerned Youth in Kpandai represented the majority of NDC members in the district. They made it clear that the voices of the self-proclaimed aggrieved youth, who had not even won their own polling station, should not be taken seriously.

The Real Concerned NDC Youth in Kpandai expressed confidence that the NDC in the district is alive, strong, and reshaping. They called for the appointment of a DCE who would support the resetting agenda of President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government—someone who could help move the district forward, regardless of whether they were from the original shortlist.

The group also reiterated their support for the careful and thoughtful approach taken by the national leadership, as outlined by the National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who had addressed the issue of delays in MMDCE appointments.

They reminded everyone that the leadership has received multiple petitions and concerns from across the country and is taking its time to vet, consult, and appoint the most suitable candidate.

In conclusion, the Real Concerned NDC Youth in Kpandai called for unity within the party and urged their colleagues to focus on the party’s success rather than individual interests. They pledged their full support for whoever is appointed as DCE, provided the candidate is NDC, and called on all party members in Kpandai to do the same.

They also urged the President, the National Chairman, and other party executives to disregard the press conference held by the allegedly aggrieved youth, describing it as “misinforming, misleading, and ultimately selfish.”

Mahama and Akufo-Addo’s historic Easter handshake that inspires a nation

0

High in the misty peaks of the Kwahu mountains, where laughter meets tradition and the skies are alive with paragliders and celebration, something extraordinary unfolded this, Easter.

What was expected to be another weekend of culture, colour, and thrill turned into a defining moment of national unity. It wasn’t just the music or the energy that caught people’s attention — it was a handshake.

A powerful, symbolic gesture that echoed far beyond the hills.

For over a century, Kwahu Easter has been the heartbeat of Ghana’s festive calendar. Tens of thousands of revelers — from thrill-seekers to culture enthusiasts — make the journey each year for the parades, the business forums, the high-altitude adventure, and the deep sense of belonging. But in 2025, it delivered more than excitement. It delivered hope.

On Saturday, April 19, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama, in town for the Kwahu Business Forum, made a quiet but history-making visit to a familiar face: former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The two leaders met at the Obomeng residence of Mike Twum-Barimah, CEO of MidWest GH Ltd., where they were joined by renowned entrepreneur Kwame Ofosu Bamfo, CEO of Bamson Group, the powerhouse behind Sikkens Paint, Glostal Aluminium, and Alisa Hotel.

Two giants of Ghana’s political scene, once fierce contenders, now sitting side by side — not to debate, but to reconnect. And it wasn’t staged for the cameras. It was personal. It was powerful. And it was real. The man credited with bringing this meeting to life is Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff of Mahama’s administration and a proud son of Obomeng Kwahu.

His behind-the-scenes diplomacy and deep ties to his hometown made the moment possible. In Obomeng, he’s now being hailed as a quiet hero.

Eyewitnesses say President Mahama who was driven up the winding hills, stepped out of his car with a smile, and embraced his former opponent with warmth and respect. The atmosphere? Charged. The symbolism? Unmistakable.

As the images spread across social media — the handshake, the smiles, the togetherness — something shifted. For many Ghanaians, the moment pierced through years of political noise and tension. It reminded them of what leadership could look like: disagreement without division, dialogue over discord.

“This is how we move forward as a country,” said one festival-goer at the Obomeng street fair.

“It’s not just about elections. It’s about setting an example. If they can sit together, why can’t we?”

The political impact of this unexpected encounter is already being felt. Analysts suggest it could ease political polarisation ahead of the 2028 elections.

In a nation where party colours often define allegiances down to the dinner table, this gesture of unity might very well open a new chapter — one of civility, mutual respect, and national focus.

Kwahu Easter has always been a celebration of life — of culture, family, and resilience. But this year, it became something deeper: a symbol of possibility.

Beyond the paragliders and concerts, beyond the roaring engines and packed viewing spots, there was a message from the mountaintop.

Ghana is bigger than its politics. And unity is still possible.

It began with a drive, a handshake, and a shared smile between two of Ghana’s most iconic leaders. It ended with a nation feeling just a little more hopeful.

Now that, truly, is an Easter to remember.

Better Ghana Alliance rebuts DPPF’s hailing of KGL as Africa’s top lotto company

0

The Alliance described the claim as misleading The Alliance described the claim as misleading

The Better Ghana Alliance has issued a sharp rebuttal to a recent article published by the Digital Public Policy Forum (DPPF) claiming that KGL is Africa’s most accomplished Lotto Marketing Company (LMC).

In a detailed rejoinder released Monday, the Alliance described the claim as misleading and an apparent attempt to deflect from serious concerns raised by the Financial and Business Services Employees Union (FBSEU) of the National Lottery Authority (NLA).

Legal ambiguities Over KGL’s status

Central to the Alliance’s concerns is a “misrepresentation” of KGL’s licensing status.

According to the group, KGL is not recognised in law as an LMC under the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722). Instead, it operates as a “Third-Party Collaborator,” a designation that lacks the privileges and responsibilities associated with LMCS.

The group pointed to Section 2(4) of Act 722, which permits collaborations but does not establish a legal basis for the “online LMC” category referenced in the DPPF report.

Regulatory breaches and revenue concerns

Even if KGL were considered an LMC, the Alliance contends its operations would violate several provisions of the Act. These include requirements for prepayment before sales, NLA oversight of sales data, and NLA’s exclusive mandate to pay prize monies and commissions.

It further argued that KGL’s activities have contributed to significant revenue losses to the state.

Citing industry estimates, the group claims KGL’s daily sales, believed to range between GH¢8 million and GH¢12 million, could generate up to GH¢2.8 billion annually under proper LMC frameworks. However, the company’s reported annual contribution of GH¢250 million falls far short of this potential.

Automation and Oversight: A misleading narrative?

While acknowledging the role of digital transformation in modernising public institutions, the Alliance disputes the notion that KGL was a pioneer in this regard.

It insists that the NLA had already developed digital solutions prior to KGL’s entry, citing platforms like *890# and systems such as Simnet and Lots.

DPPF’s portrayal of KGL as a digital innovator, the Alliance argues, omits key facts about previous directives for digital operators to cease operations due to regulatory breaches.

Allegations of institutional capture

The Better Ghana Alliance’s concerns echo those raised in a 2022 petition to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) by a lotto receiver, Kwaku Antwi-Boadu.

The petition accuses KGL of having effectively “impoverished” the NLA and driving it into debt.

The petitioner alleged that delays in commission payments, inability to renovate NLA facilities, and the late disbursement of prize money are the direct results of the NLA-KGL partnership.

Antwi-Boadu also questioned KGL’s technological claims, stating that mobile lottery services predated the company’s involvement.

The petition asserted that the NLA was deliberately weakened to allow KGL to dominate, with concerns having previously been raised with senior national security officials, including Major General (Retired) Adu Amanfo.

Calls for government action

The Alliance urged government agencies and regulatory bodies to conduct an independent investigation into the NLA-KGL relationship and its broader implications for public accountability.

They warn that the current structure allows for significant state revenue leakage, with reports suggesting only GH¢800 million of Ghana’s GH¢1.8 billion lottery market is being captured by the NLA.

In conclusion, the Better Ghana Alliance called for a renewed focus on regulatory enforcement and institutional integrity rather than what it termed the “glorification of a single entity.”

‘Akonta Mining has never mined in a forest reserve’

Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi

A former Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has refuted claims suggesting that Akonta Mining is involved in illegal mining activities.

In an interview on JoyNews and monitored by GhanaWeb on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the former lawmaker stated that Akonta Mining has never entered any forest reserve to engage in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.

“It is a mistake that people who ought to know better make, referring to Akonta Mining as engaged in illegal mining. Akonta Mining is not one of the small-scale mining entities. It is a large-scale mining company and has never entered any forest reserve in Ghana,” he stated.

“It has never been the case that Akonta Mining has existed or operated in any forest zone, in fact, Akonta Mining is not among the companies permitted to engage in forest area mining,” he added.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has ordered the immediate revocation of all mining licences held by Akonta Mining Company Limited.

At a press conference on Monday, April 21,2025, he disclosed that Akonta Mining had been implicated in series of illegal activities, including unauthorised mining within protected forest reserves and illegal sale of mining concessions.

“This company has not only trespassed into protected reserves but has become a criminal syndicate, selling access of the Aboi Forest Reserve to illegal miners for a staggering GH₵300,000 per concession,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), has stated that his company, Akonta Mining Limited, will take legal action against the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources over the revocation of the company’s mining licence.

Akandoh makes surprise visit to TTH over negligence claims

0

Following widespread social media reports alleging negligence over the death of a patient at the Accident and Emergency Ward of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has paid an unannounced visit to the facility to assess challenges in healthcare delivery.

The visit, according to the Minister, was to obtain firsthand insight into the difficulties confronting health professionals in the Northern Region. His first stop was the TTH, the only major referral hospital in Tamale.

Speaking in an interview during the visit on Tuesday, April 22, the Minister expressed concern over the number of non-functional medical equipment at the facility.

He noted with worry that despite payments being made to suppliers, many of the machines remain idle and unused.

He also highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to finding a lasting solution to the persistent water crisis that has affected healthcare delivery at TTH and in the region as a whole.

“…There are some of them that I would have to escalate to the president. The Tamale water incident is beyond the Tamale Teaching Hospital. Tamale has a major water crisis; it is not an issue of the health sector, and it is a priority area for the president, as he will solve the issue of the water crisis in Tamale.

“There are issues of equipment that have been supplied to the hospital that are not working at all, and we will look into all that, because you can not supply equipment without installing it, and yet you have been paid”, he said.

Touching on plans to replace faulty equipment at the referral facility, the Minister stated that any interventions from his ministry would be guided by the hospital management’s stated priorities.

He also called on residents to continue to have confidence in the hospital and to patronise its services, assuring them of improved healthcare delivery shortly.

“When we finish with them, we will all think through it, because I can not do it all alone, I have to involve them, and we are thinking through it together. Everybody should remain calm and let us continue to patronise the facility,” he stated.

I’m ready to reconstruct burnt Adum market – Bryan Acheampong

0

Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong, has pledged to fully fund the reconstruction of the Adum BlueLight section of Kumasi’s Central Business District, which was recently destroyed by fire—pending approval from the Asantehene and city authorities.

The former Food and Agriculture Minister made the announcement during a visit to the market, where he also donated GHS 300,000 to affected traders.

The fire, which occurred on Friday, March 21, caused extensive property damage, leaving many traders struggling to resume operations.

In the absence of official clearance for reconstruction, some traders have erected temporary structures to continue their businesses.

Mr. Acheampong said he will consult with the Asantehene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, and other local authorities to seek approval for the project.

“Coming here today, you will see that they have started building, but the structures are very weak, yet they are supporting it with block work. But these are not stable. I want to engage the Otumfuo, who is out of the country, and if he permits, also the assembly permits, we want to rebuild this structure for them in 12 months.

“We will put in a very strong infrastructure, and then we will clean the front, put up some stores so that the traders here can have some normalcy to their lives.”

Ghana urged to explore new markets amid US tariff threat

Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaki Awingobit Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaki Awingobit

The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaki Awingobit, has called on the government to urgently seek alternative markets in response to the proposed tariffs by the United States on Ghanaian exports.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business on the sidelines of the Kwahu Business Forum, Awingobit stressed the need for Ghana to shift its focus toward regional trade opportunities, particularly within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“At the time the US imposed the tariff on us, I announced that there is a need for the Ghanaian government to look for opportunities elsewhere. We must tap into the African Continental Free Trade Area to ensure that the 54 countries participating in the AfCFTA can start trading effectively now,” he said.

He added, “I believe market access is key to us, it’s paramount. I strongly believe the government should take the lead in this effort and move forward. The biggest market we were exporting to under AGOA was the US. Now that the US is trying to impose tariffs on us, it gives us the opportunity to look elsewhere.”

He highlighted market access as crucial to the survival and growth of Ghanaian businesses, stressing that the government must take the lead in promoting value addition and export diversification.

Awingobit also expressed optimism about the Ministry of Trade’s efforts to spearhead engagements with other countries to promote Ghanaian goods.

“Looking elsewhere now, I’m happy that the Ministry of Trade wants to lead the charge, to reach out to other countries. China, for instance, is a huge market—the biggest market so far as Ghanaian produce is concerned,” he added.

Renowned Ghanaian musician Ackah Blay Renowned Ghanaian musician Ackah Blay

Renowned Ghanaian musician Ackah Blay has stated that constant collaborations with other top artistes are responsible for his longevity in the music industry.

In an interview with Adom TV, shared on Instagram on April 22, 2025, Ackah Blay revealed that working with other veteran musicians has had a positive impact on his career.

“To be frank, you have to learn when playing with top artistes because they know more than you do. Playing with senior artistes is an opportunity to learn from them.

“When I started playing with George Darko, we went on a trip to Germany. He used to sleep in the same room with me. He would mostly wake up at 4 in the morning and play his guitar until 6,” he said.

Ackah Blay added that despite his experience in music, he continues to learn from younger artistes in the industry.

“Also, as a human being, you always have to keep learning. Even when working with younger artistes, you must be open to learning. When I go to the studios, I learn from them, especially when I watch them play certain instruments or beats,” he added.
