Suspect who allegedly stabbed firefighter at Adjiringanor arrested

0

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced the arrest of 21-year-old Azumah Sampson, the man suspected of stabbing a firefighter during a fire outbreak response at Adjiringanor last Friday.

In a Facebook update on Monday, November 17, the Service revealed that Fire Officers, with crucial support from members of the White Chapel Youth Group in Madina, apprehended the suspect, who is now in police custody, assisting with investigations.

The arrest follows a violent incident that occurred on November 14, 2025, when firefighters from Legon, Madina, Adenta, and the National Headquarters responded to a late-night blaze that destroyed seven rooms in a two-storey, eight-room building near Ability Square in Adjiringanor.

During the firefighting operation, two officers sustained injuries—one from a stab wound to the left arm and another from a falling block. Both were treated and discharged from the Unity Clinic in Madina. The Service subsequently appealed to the public for information to track down the individual responsible for the stabbing, even offering a reward.

In its latest statement, the GNFS praised community members who stepped forward to assist, saying:

“The Ghana National Fire Service commends the White Chapel Youth Group at Madina for their swift action in helping the Fire Officers to apprehend the suspect, as well as all individuals who provided crucial information leading to his arrest. We say ayekoo to you all.”

The Service encouraged the public to continue cooperating with firefighters, noting that such support strengthens community safety and ensures justice is served.

Mahama urges new Chief Justice to uphold constitutional mandate

0

By Iddi Yire, GNA

Accra, Nov. 17, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Monday swore-in Mr Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the 16th Chief of of Ghana.

The inauguration is in line with Article 144 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

Prior to his inauguration, Mr Baffoe-Bonnie who is the most senior Supreme Court Justice has been the Acting Chief Justice for the past seven months following the suspension and subsequent removal from office of Lady Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, based on the recommendations of the Justice Gabriel Pwamang Committee.

The President said the ceremony marked a significant milestone and it reaffirmed their collective dedication to constitutionalism, the rule of law, and the independence of the judiciary as an equal branch of government.

The President said:  “The Chief Justice is not only the head of the judiciary, but he is also the symbol and guarantor of justice for our people,” he said.

President Mahama said the Constitution enshrined the principle that the courts, as outlined in Article 125, shall administer justice in the name of the Republic of Ghana, guided by the principles of freedom, equality, probity, and accountability.

“And so, as Chief Justice, you are the first guardian of these principles within the judicial arm. Judicial independence and separation of powers,” he said.

“The strength of our democracy depends on a delicate yet essential balance of powers among the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary.”

President Mahama reiterated that each branch of Government was supposed to operate independently, and yet they had to collaborate to serve the common good.

“And I’m confident that under your leadership, my Lord Chief Justice, the judiciary will continue to uphold its constitutional mandate without fear or favor, and as you said in your oath, without affection or ill will.”

President Mahama said in recent years, public institutions worldwide and in countries have been questioned, scrutinised, and sometimes criticized.

He said Ghanaians want institutions that worked and could be trusted, saying, “The judiciary in particular must be above reproach. One single act of corruption by a judicial officer can undermine years of hard work and erode public confidence in the entire system. ”

He told the new Chief Justice that one of his most urgent tasks was to strengthen integrity within the judiciary, and that included firm but fair disciplinary standards for judges and staff, transparent and predictable procedures for case assignments and management.

The other task should be to have strong internal mechanisms to address allegations of misconduct and a culture where ethical conduct was rewarded, and wrongdoing was swiftly sanctioned.

“Our citizens must know and feel that justice in Ghana is not for sale, and that no one, regardless of their power or status, is too powerful or too humble to be held accountable under the law,” President Mahama said.

Mr Justice Baffoe-Bonnie expressed his gratitude to the President for the privilege given to serve the nation as Chief Justice.

“Mr. President, in accepting this office, I give my solemn word that I will uphold the rule of law, respect the separation of powers and protect the constitution”.

In attendance was Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

GUTA President Questions Digitalisation Effectiveness Amid Port Delays

Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA)
Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA)

The head of Ghana’s largest traders’ association has challenged the government’s digital revenue systems, arguing that automation alone cannot resolve compliance issues without fairer tax policies.

Joseph Obeng, President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), told the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday that traders still encounter significant bureaucratic obstacles at ports despite extensive digitalization of customs and revenue collection processes. He insisted that technology serves merely as a tool for efficiency, while actual compliance depends on the nature of taxes imposed.

“Digitisation is there to bring efficiency in the collection of taxes. But the actual doing of this, the willingness of traders to comply, depends on how conducive the taxes are,” Obeng stated during the morning broadcast. He emphasized that fairness, affordability and simplicity determine whether businesses engage willingly with tax systems or feel overburdened.

The GUTA leader highlighted what he called a fundamental disconnect in current policy approaches. According to him, authorities must establish reasonable tax frameworks before deploying digital collection infrastructure. “You must make tax payment conducive first, before you use the digital machinery for the collection. The conduciveness and fairness of the tax are what feed into the digital system,” he explained.

Obeng called for comprehensive reforms to create more predictable and business-friendly taxation conditions. He warned that without addressing importers’ core frustrations, digitalization initiatives would fall short of government objectives. His comments reflect growing concerns among trading communities about the gap between technological advancement and practical business realities.

The government has invested heavily in digital systems across revenue agencies, including the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and customs operations, as part of broader modernization efforts. Officials have frequently cited digitalization as key to improving efficiency, reducing corruption and expanding the tax net. However, business groups have repeatedly raised concerns about high duties, complex procedures and what they describe as unpredictable policy changes.

GUTA represents thousands of traders across Ghana and regularly advocates for policy adjustments affecting import businesses. The association has previously engaged government on issues ranging from customs valuations to foreign exchange challenges facing the trading sector.

GTEC boss demands ‘natural justice’ over release of his UEW records

Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai is the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission play videoProfessor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai is the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission

Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, has raised concerns over what he describes as a violation of his data privacy rights, following the alleged release of portions of his past academic assessment records by the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

Sources indicate that the documents in question include an assessor’s report from his time as a lecturer at UEW, which purportedly rated some of his academic publications as below standard and did not recommend him for promotion.

Prof Jinapor argues that circulating such internal assessment materials without his consent breaches established data protection protocols.

The development comes at a time when the tertiary education sector is grappling with a broader controversy surrounding unrecognised certificates and the disclosure of academic credentials by GTEC without the consent of the individuals involved.

Critics have pointed out what they view as an inconsistency, noting that Prof Jinapor has been at the forefront of releasing information about others in the ongoing “fake certificates” saga, yet is now seeking redress for similar actions taken against him.

In a formal letter to UEW, the GTEC boss reportedly demanded an explanation for the alleged disclosure, insisting that the university acted improperly by making confidential information available to third parties.

His petition has further intensified debate within academic circles.

While some academics believe the issue highlights longstanding concerns about promotion processes and regulatory authority in tertiary institutions, others say the matter reinforces the need for strict and impartial enforcement of Ghana’s Data Protection Act — especially by institutions and regulators who oversee compliance.

Critics have also questioned the timing of Prof Jinapor’s complaint, pointing out that he did not challenge the assessor’s decision during his time at UEW but is now contesting the matter as head of the regulatory body.

Supporters, however, argue that irrespective of timing, every individual is entitled to the protection of their personal data — though they stress that this principle must apply uniformly.

The controversy continues to evolve, with stakeholders awaiting further clarifications from both GTEC and UEW.

Mahama, Akufo- Addo, Bawumia Eulogise Aliu Mahama

0

President John Mahama, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia yesterday took turns to pay tributes to the late former Vice President, Aliu Mahama.

It was during the 13th commemorative prayers for the late former Vice President at his residence at the Switchback Road, Cantonments, Accra, when President Mahama paid tributes to the deceased.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Imam Ahmed Umar Sanda described the late former Vice President as a good man who dealt with people irrespective of their persuasions.

He expressed condolences to the Aliu Mahama family in Yendi, Tamale and Accra.

He promised to stand with the family and that at an appropriate time he would call on them.

President Mahama was represented at the prayer session by Alhaji Collins Dauda and Imam Ahmad Umar Sanda, Ghana’s Ambassador to Mali and Mauritania.

Former President Akufo-Addo recalled his relationship with Aliu Mahama before and when both of them were in government, and said he was a generous man who worked hard for their government. He also remembered him as a man of humility and integrity.

“His death continues to fill me with sadness. God calls us when he is ready not when we are,” he said, adding that “I am grateful to his children for remembering him.”

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, recalled his childhood days when the late former Vice President “used to visit my father Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia when I was growing up in Tamale. The late Aliu Mahama was then a student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

“Anytime he came visiting my father, I waylaid him when he was leaving because I was assured of he giving me something.”

He said the late former Vice President spoke on his behalf at the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when his name came up for consideration as a running mate to Nana Akufo-Addo.

When he was eventually made a running mate, he said the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama led him on the campaign rounds “and literally held my hands as we went on campaign tours. He knew a lot of people whom he introduced me to. He was my political mentor and guided me in my political journey.

“Farouk, his son, is my brother and would remain so. What happened on November 16 thirteen years ago is like it happened a few weeks ago. May Allah grant him paradise.”

It was a wonderful gathering of persons from diverse backgrounds; Muslims, Christians, National Democratic Congress (NDC), NPP and varying ethnic groupings, which spoke a lot about how Ghanaians do not brook ethnic and religious bigotry.

Present was a former Speaker of Parliament, Sekyi Hughes, among other dignitaries.

Serving on NHIA Board a call to duty

0

Prof. Ernest Yorke, President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has described his appointment to the Board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) as a call to national duty.

Prof. Yorke was nominated to the NHIA Board in May this year following the revocation of Anne Sansa Daly’s appointment by President John Dramani Mahama following concerns about her lack of a valid licence to practice medicine in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday November 17, Prof Yorke noted that “I think for me it is a call to duty and when national duty calls I think it is a privilege and I don’t think it would have been good for me to turn it down.”

“It is unfortunate what happened happened but I think they needed to replace with somebody everybody can vouch for and I am glad that that lot fell on me and I have been since I was appointed.”

Ghana Fixed Income Market Records 363 Million Cedis in Trading

0

Gfim Logo
Ghana Fixed Income Market

Ghana’s fixed income market recorded total trading activity of 363.91 million Ghana cedis (GHC) on Thursday, November 14, 2025, across 178 transactions involving government securities and bonds.

Treasury bills dominated the trading session, accounting for 121 million cedis across 133 trades. Sell and buyback trades involving Government of Ghana (GOG) notes and bonds generated the largest value at 227.22 million cedis through 42 transactions, reflecting active liquidity management by market participants.

New GOG notes and bonds attracted 15.43 million cedis in fresh investments across two trades, while old GOG notes and bonds recorded modest activity of 262,000 cedis in a single transaction. No corporate bonds or Bank of Ghana (BoG) bills changed hands during the session.

The most actively traded treasury bill was the GOG-BL-23/02/26 instrument, which recorded volume of 57.23 million cedis across six transactions at a closing price of 96.83 percent of face value. This instrument matures in February 2026, offering investors a short term placement option.

Among government bonds, the GOG-BD-08/02/33 security with a coupon rate of 9.25 percent saw the highest new issuance activity, attracting 15.43 million cedis at a yield of 15.38 percent and closing price of 73.72 percent. The instrument matures in February 2033, providing a long term investment avenue for institutional and retail investors.

In the old bonds segment, the GOG-BD-03/05/27 security carrying a 22.30 percent coupon traded 262,000 cedis at an 18 percent yield and premium price of 105.29 percent. The higher than face value price reflects strong demand for this older instrument, which offers attractive returns relative to current market rates.

Sell and buyback transactions, which allow investors to temporarily exchange securities for cash while agreeing to repurchase them later, were dominated by the GOG-BD-06/02/35 bond. This instrument recorded 65.27 million cedis across 13 trades at a yield of 16.98 percent and closing price of 65.89 percent.

The robust trading activity in treasury bills reflects continued investor preference for shorter dated government securities, which offer flexibility and relatively lower interest rate risk. The strong performance of sell and buyback trades indicates active cash management by financial institutions seeking to balance liquidity needs with investment returns.

Market analysts note that yields on government securities remain elevated, reflecting the Bank of Ghana’s monetary policy stance and investor expectations about inflation and fiscal conditions. The premium pricing on older bonds with higher coupon rates suggests that investors are willing to pay above par value to secure superior yields compared to newly issued instruments.

The fixed income market plays a crucial role in Ghana’s financial system, providing government with funding for development projects while offering investors relatively stable returns. Banks, pension funds, and insurance companies are the primary participants, using these securities for both investment and liquidity management purposes.

Trading volumes in the fixed income market have remained steady throughout 2025, supported by government’s regular issuance schedule and strong institutional demand. However, the high yields reflect ongoing concerns about debt sustainability and the need for fiscal consolidation to reduce borrowing costs over time.

FIFA Reports Over 30,000 Abusive Posts To Social Media Platforms In 2025

0

FIFA says it has reported more than 30,000 abusive social media posts to various platforms this year as part of its ongoing efforts to combat online harassment targeting players, officials and teams.

In its latest report, world football’s governing body revealed that 11 individuals were referred to law enforcement authorities in 2025, with one case escalated to Interpol.

The identified offenders were located in Argentina, Brazil, France, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, and were traced “following abuse during FIFA competitions”.

Speaking on the International Day for Tolerance, FIFA president Gianni Infantino stressed the need to safeguard all participants in football—both on and off the pitch.

“Football must be a safe and inclusive space—on the pitch, in the stands and online,” Infantino said.

“Through the FIFA Social Media Protection Service (SMPS), and by deploying advanced technology and human expertise, we are taking decisive action to protect players, coaches, teams and match officials from the serious harm that online abuse causes.”

FIFA launched the SMPS in 2022 in partnership with global players’ union Fifpro to detect, block and report abusive content.

The organisation faced criticism earlier this year for appearing to drop anti-racism messaging during the Club World Cup in the US, although the SMPS was fully operational throughout the tournament

According to FIFA, the service monitored 2,401 active accounts across five platforms during the competition, analysing 5.9 million posts. Out of these, 179,517 posts were flagged for review, with 20,587 reported to relevant social media companies.

Infantino reaffirmed Fifa’s commitment to confronting online abuse. “Our message is clear: abuse has no place in our game,” he said.

“We will continue working with member associations, confederations and law enforcement authorities to hold offenders accountable. Such behaviour has no place in football or society, and Fifa is taking all possible steps, including blacklisting individuals from purchasing tickets for Fifa tournaments.”

Since the SMPS was launched in 2022, more than 65,000 abusive posts have been reported to social media platforms.

Strengthen integrity within the judiciary—Mahama tells Baffoe-Bonnie

0

President John Dramani Mahama has urged the new Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, to prioritise integrity within Ghana’s judiciary as he assumes the country’s highest judicial office.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony at the Presidency on Monday, November 17, President Mahama reflected on public trust in institutions, saying, “In recent years, public institutions worldwide and in our own country have been questioned, scrutinised and sometimes criticised. Our people want the institutions that work, but they also demand institutions that they can trust.”

He highlighted the crucial role of the judiciary, noting that “The judiciary in particular must be above reproach. One single act of corruption by a judicial officer can undermine years of hard work and erode public confidence in the entire system.”

Directing his remarks to Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, the President outlined key priorities:

“My lord chief justice, one of your most urgent tasks is to strengthen integrity within the judiciary. And this includes firstly firm but fair disciplinary standards for judges and staff; secondly transparent and predictable procedures for case assignment and management; thirdly strong internal mechanisms to address allegations of misconduct; and fourthly a culture where ethical conduct is rewarded and wrongdoing is swiftly sanctioned.”

He further emphasised that justice must serve all citizens, saying,

“Our citizens must know and feel that justice in Ghana is not for sale and that no one, regardless of their power or their status is too powerful or too humble to be held accountable under the law. Justice must not only be fair, it must also be accessible, it must be timely and it must be affordable.”

Political approach to corruption has failed Ghana – Akyem Muoso Chief

0

Correspondence from Eastern Region

Osabarima Dr Owusu Beyeeman, the Chief of Akyem Muoso, has delivered a searing indictment of Ghana’s political establishment, stating unequivocally that the approach used by successive regimes to combat corruption has been a complete failure and cannot resolve the national canker.

Speaking at the inaugural Yensom festival of the chiefs and people of Akyem Muoso, Osabarima Beyeeman stressed that from Ghana’s independence under Dr Kwame Nkrumah, through military juntas, and into the current Fourth Republic, politicians have continuously “been playing with the conscience of Ghanaians” regarding the fight against graft.

The Chief lamented the pervasive nature of corruption, noting that many traditional leaders avoid commenting on the issue due to the potential backlash from the political class. However, he insisted that decisive action is paramount for the nation’s progress.

“Corruption has become a difficult subject matter in Ghana… It is however imperative to deal with it decisively if we want to progress as a country,” Osabarima noted.

He highlighted the persistent and predictable cycle of corruption exposes linked to regime change, describing the phenomenon as a long-standing national drama.

“The era when a certain group of people are powerful and angels when they are in government and in a matter of days becomes thieves when they leave power must stop. This change of regime and its associated drama of plethora of corruption related expose has become the norm, predating the inception of the fourth Republic,” he stated.

Call for Ruthless Anti-Corruption Action

Osabarima Dr Owusu Beyeeman argued that the solution lies not in political rhetoric, but in empowering independent state institutions. He called for the state’s anti-corruption agencies and investigative bodies to work effectively and fearlessly, regardless of the status or political affiliation of the individuals involved.

He emphasised that if a government official commits an offence while in office, the state institutions responsible for investigating and prosecuting corruption-related matters must be seen to be taking immediate action.

Radical Action Needed to End Galamsey

The Chief also turned his attention to the escalating crisis of illegal mining, locally known as ‘galamsey,’ warning that if the menace is not tackled fearlessly and immediately, Ghana risks an existential environmental catastrophe.

“If the menace of illegal mining is not tackled fearlessly, Ghana may import water and food before we can survive as a country,” he cautioned.

Osabarima Beyeeman referenced recent alarming reports detailing the power wielded by illegal miners, citing an incident where the CEO of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), accompanied by heavy military and national security operatives, had to flee for their lives during an official tour of galamsey towns in the Ashanti Region.

He called for immediate, forceful government intervention: “I believe the solution lies with the Government with all the powers of the state. A more radical and ruthless action is required to end this menace.”

The Chief warned that the “gangsterism by illegal [miners],” if not stopped, could eventually turn into vigilantism that severely hurts the nation. He also challenged the common justification for illegal mining, vehemently disagreeing with the assertion that it provides necessary jobs for the youth.

Instead, the Muosohene demanded that financiers of galamsey must redirect their capital saying, “Financiers of galamsey must invest in equipment that would support and improve farming rather than illegal mining that harms the environment.”

Yensom Festival Launches Development Road Map

The Osabarima’s address served as the highlight of the maiden Yensom festival, an initiative designed as a homecoming event aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence and strategic development within Akyem Muoso. The annual gathering is intended to bring citizens home, both local and abroad, to strategize development, conduct introspection, and plan for the ensuing year.

During the festival, a ten-year development plan was formally launched. This roadmap seeks to identify the immediate needs of Muoso and provide a structural approach for development through local initiatives and self-help projects.

Furthermore, the Muoso History Book was launched. Osabarima Dr Owusu Beyeeman explained that the book was written by the State Book after extensive research to close a historical vacuum that had allowed for the distortion, misinformation, and deliberate adulteration of history for individual interests.

The book aims to provide accurate information, widen knowledge, and accurately position Akyem Muoso within the Akyem Abuakwa State. It is intended to serve as a primary resource for investors, academicians, researchers, and, crucially, the judicial committees of the traditional council and the House of Chiefs.

Ghana Stock Exchange Records Gains in Monday Trading Session

Ghana Stock Exchange
Ghana Stock Exchange

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) posted modest gains on Monday, November 17, 2025, with both key indices advancing in the 7094th trading session of the year.

The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) rose 2.27 points to close at 8,414.15, up from 8,411.88 recorded on Friday, November 14. The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) gained 3.32 points, closing at 4,207.55 compared to the previous session’s 4,204.23.

Market capitalization stood at 165,540.66 million Ghana cedis (GHC) at the close of trading. A total of 1,083,742 shares changed hands during the session, generating a turnover value of approximately 2.66 million cedis.

The gains extend the bourse’s strong year to date performance. Since January 1, 2025, the GSE Composite Index has surged 72.12 percent, while the Financial Stocks Index has climbed 76.73 percent, reflecting sustained investor confidence in Ghana’s equity market.

The GSE Composite Index tracks the performance of all listed equities on the exchange, providing a broad measure of market sentiment. The Financial Stocks Index focuses specifically on banking and financial services companies, which have been among the best performing sectors this year.

Monday’s trading activity suggests continued momentum in the market, though volumes remain modest compared to peak trading days earlier in the year. Investors appear to be maintaining positions ahead of year end, with many companies expected to announce dividend distributions in the coming weeks.

The strong year to date returns have been driven by improved corporate earnings, stable macroeconomic conditions, and increased foreign investor interest in Ghanaian equities. The financial sector’s outperformance reflects robust profitability among banks, which have benefited from higher interest rate margins and growing loan portfolios.

Market analysts note that the GSE’s performance this year contrasts sharply with previous years marked by volatility and subdued trading activity. The rally has restored investor wealth and renewed interest in the exchange as a viable investment destination.

Trading continues Tuesday with market participants watching for any announcements from listed companies and monitoring global financial developments that could influence local sentiment.

Otto Addo apologises to Son Heung-min after fallen out at Hamburger SV

0

Head coach of Ghana, Otto Addo has rendered an apology to national team captain of South Korea Son Heung-min ahead of Kirin Cup game tomorrow.

Both parties met at German, with Hamburger SV with Otto Addo in charge of youth team as head coach but could not offer him much playing time. Speaking at press conference before their game revealed what transpired saying it was purely language barrier and nothing much.

According to Otto Addo, the former Los Angeles FC talisman found it difficult to settle because he could not speak English except Korean and that did not help since he could not communicate tactically well with him.

“We always used Dori Cha, a former teammate of mine for him to translate how we wanted to play and what we expected from him,” Otto Addo said.

“The first days were very, very difficult at the beginning, I want to apologise to Son.

“He didn’t play too much because I couldn’t explain to him the tactics. It was difficult. But later, he did a great job for us in Hamburg, not only as a youth player, but also as a player in the first team.

On Tuesday, Son will cross path with Otto Addo at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, where the latter has warned his players to watch the former Tottenham Hotspur forward since he’s dangerous.

Smugglers now control Ghana’s rice and sugar market – Importers raise alarm

0

Importers have raised the alarm that smugglers have taken control of Ghana’s rice and sugar market, warning that government inaction has allowed illegal trade to spiral out of control.

According to the Chairman of the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG), John Awuni, the alarming levels of smuggled goods entering the country through unapproved routes are destroying legitimate businesses and draining millions of cedis from state coffers.

Citing Aflao and Elubo as hotspots where smuggling has become rampant, he blamed weak enforcement and bureaucratic delays for the worsening situation.

Why healthy eating is becoming a luxury for many adult Ghanaians

“Smuggling constitutes economic sabotage. Ghana cannot continue to lose revenue and jobs because of negligence in enforcing trade laws. The government’s silence and inaction are tantamount to complicity. The time to act is now,” the FABAG Chairman told GhanaWeb Business on November 17, 2025.

“If this trend continues unchecked, the formal food import sector as well as local rice production will collapse. Government will not only lose vital revenue for development, but our agricultural sector will also suffer massively. Ghana deserves transparent, robust enforcement measures to combat illicit trade,” Awuni added.

FABAG therefore called on the government to take immediate steps to protect the economy by combating illicit trade and safeguarding public health.

The photo, shared to TikTok by a diehard Daddy Lumba fan, Ohemaa Lumba, has surfaced amid the ongoing court case between his two widows over who should be recognised as his legal spouse.

Ghanaian highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, died on July 26, 2025, sparking a feud between his two surviving spouses.

His longtime wife, Akosua Serwaa, dragged his second wife, Odo Broni, to the Kumasi High Court, seeking a declaration that she is the only legal spouse of the late musician.

Daddy Lumba’s marriage to Akosua Serwaa

According to reports, Daddy Lumba married Akosua Serwaa in the customary Ghanaian tradition at Bomso near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 1991.

Their marriage was witnessed by members of both families in a lovely ceremony to celebrate their union.

In the throwback photo shared by Ohemaa Lumba, the late musician’s mother, Cecilia Ama Saah, was seen smiling as she stood with her children, Ernestina Fosuh, popularly known as Akosua Brimpongmaa, and Faustina Fosu.

Daddy Lumba’s stepfather, Nana Adu Mensah of Jamasi-Kyekyewere, popularly known as General Polipo, was also in the shot, as were two young nephews of the late legend.

The photo sparked reactions on social media, with many Ghanaians holding it as another piece of evidence that Akosua Serwaa is truly Daddy Lumba’s legal wife.

Following their customary marriage, Daddy Lumba married Akosua Serwaa under German civil law in 2004.

IGP’s order for release of Kwahu queen mother right step to ease tension – Mustapha Abdallah

0

Senior Researcher and Deputy Head of Programmes in Peace Operations, Stabilisation and Peacebuilding at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has described the Inspector-General of Police’s directive for the immediate release of the Kwahu queen mother, Nana Adwoa Gyamfua III as “a step in the right direction.”

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, Mustapha Abdallah stressed that chieftaincy remains a deeply revered institution and a crucial component of Ghana’s traditional governance system.

He noted that any action taken against traditional leaders, particularly queen mothers, must be approached with sensitivity to avoid escalating tensions.

“The IGP directing that the Queen Mother be released is in the right direction. When you go to the traditional level, queen mothers command a lot of respect. Any attempt to arrest her could further inflame tensions within the community,” he explained.

He added that releasing her, as ordered by the IGP, allows space for calm while proper investigations continue.

“It’s important that further investigations are carried out to understand the issues and address them in a manner that will not generate further violence,” he advised.

Background

The directive from the IGP follows widespread alarm after reports emerged that the queen mother of Kwahu, Nana Adwoa Gyamfua III, had been forcibly taken from her residence at Abene in a dawn operation.

According to the Paramount Chief of Kwahu, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, heavily armed police officers stormed the palace around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, November 17, firing shots “indiscriminately” before whisking the Queen Mother away.

In response, the Inspector-General of Police ordered her immediate release and tasked the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to conduct a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the controversial operation.

The Ghana Police Service added that any officers found culpable would face sanctions.

Ghana’s Judiciary should serve all, not the powerful

0

Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has emphasised the need for Ghana’s judiciary to remain independent, impartial, and accessible, stressing that it must protect the vulnerable and resist undue influence.

Speaking at his swearing-in as Chief Justice on Monday, November 17, 2025, at Jubilee House in Accra, Baffoe-Bonnie highlighted the role of the judiciary in serving all citizens fairly, rather than catering to the powerful or connected.

“Our judiciary must be independent, impartial, and accessible. It must not serve the powerful or the connected at the expense of the weak and the vulnerable. It must resist any incursions on its freedoms but also embrace accountability, transparency, and continuous reform,” he said.

The Chief Justice’s statement comes in the context of President John Dramani Mahama’s reaffirmation of his commitment to judicial independence during the same swearing-in ceremony.

The President underscored that an independent judiciary is a constitutional safeguard essential for protecting the rights of all citizens.

Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s remarks reinforce his vision for a judiciary that upholds the rule of law, respects court decisions regardless of popularity, and continues reforms to ensure transparency and accessibility for the public.

Ghana’s Ministry of Education champions ethical AI in education

0

Ghana’s Ministry of Education is on a transformational path – redefining the future of AI in African education. At the heart of this transformation is a pioneering, African-led approach to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in schools, one that is both responsible and contextually grounded.

The effort is being spearheaded by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) – the Ministry’s agency responsible for curriculum development and quality assurance, ensuring that AI tools are aligned with Ghana’s educational vision and values, and Centre for Distance Learning and Open Schooling. (CENDLOS)

In October 2024, the Ministry of Education, through NaCCA, introduced a new Senior High School (SHS) curriculum that shifts focus from rote memorization to 21st-century skills and competencies, character development, and Ghanaian values.

This marked the first time Ghana has developed a curriculum that explicitly aims to instill national pride and prepare youth to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.

The curriculum overhaul was bold—but it came with a challenge: how to retrain 68,000 teachers to deliver this ambitious program to 1.4 million students. The Ministry of Education responded with a strategic plan that combined local leadership with global collaboration.

Through a partnership with Playlab.ai, a US nonprofit specializing in digital infrastructure, Transforming Teaching, Education & Learning (T-TEL), a Ghanaian non-governmental organisation, and Mastercard Foundation, the Ministry of Education sought to develop AI-powered tools tailored to Ghana’s curriculum.

The initiative received subsidised support from AWS and Anthropic to cover AI usage costs, enabling teachers to access the Apps free of charge. The costs of PLC training, teacher manual, and learner materials development are being supported by T-TEL, with the support of the Mastercard Foundation, through an existing grant agreement with the Ministry of Education, which commenced in 2021.

The best description of this is a story of Ghanaian ownership, where AI is being used to amplify the expertise of teachers and support a curriculum that reflects Ghana’s national values, identity, and aspirations. To ensure this, each Subject Specific App was developed by a team of Ghanaian curriculum experts, and every App reflects Ghanaian culture, values, attitudes, and educational philosophy.

Rigorous testing before scale

The Ministry of Education has insisted on rigorous quality assurance to ensure that the AI apps are robust and reliable. A four-phase testing protocol ensures that every app meets high standards:

Technical Accuracy Review – Verifies that AI app outputs align with the curriculum. At least 80% of the apps must be at least 80% accurate across 20 consecutive tests before advancing.

Educational Quality Review – Curriculum writers assess the pedagogical value of the material, shifting focus from technical function to educational impact.

User Experience Review – Teachers in pilot schools test the real-world functionality of the apps, evaluating both accuracy and classroom usability.

Regional Testing – Assesses infrastructure and operational readiness in 40 schools.

This methodical approach builds trust and credibility, ensuring that only proven tools reach classrooms.

Integration, not disruption

One of the most innovative aspects of Ghana’s approach is its seamless integration of AI into existing systems. The tools are not generic; they are built and trained on locally developed materials, including teacher guides, learner resources, national values, and gender equality frameworks.

The result is a suite of apps that help teachers create assessments and lesson plans faster, more accurately, and in ways that resonate with Ghanaian learners.

The introduction of and training for these tools leverages upon Ghana’s existing professional learning architecture- weekly school-based Professional Learning Community (PLC) sessions. Introduced by the Ghana Education Service (GES) in May 2023, all 712 SHSs hold 90-minute PLC meetings each week.

These sessions provide a platform for Ghana’s 68,000 SHS teachers to collaborate, receive training, and improve their teaching. Nationwide, 84% of teachers attend PLC sessions every week.

They have become the backbone of teacher professional development and the perfect platform for introducing AI tools. GES is now using these PLCs to train teachers on how to use the apps, share feedback, and collaborate. QR codes linking to the curriculum microsite: www.curriculumresources.edu.gh and app resources are printed in PLC handbooks, making access seamless.

Early Results: Teachers embrace the change

In July 2025, during the initial phase of app development, 29 NaCCA staff were trained to build Subject-Specific Apps to support curriculum development, assessment, and instructional materials. These tools were then tested by 71 teachers across Ghana, covering over 30 subjects. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive:

95% said lesson planning was significantly faster.99% found no errors in the content produced.93% of teachers reported satisfaction and plan to continue using the apps beyond PLC.

One teacher summed it up: “For the first time, I feel equipped to deliver the curriculum as intended. The app doesn’t replace my expertise; it amplifies it.”

A model for the Continent

As Ghana prepares for a national rollout in October 2025, the implications extend beyond its borders. Countries like Sierra Leone, Kenya, and Rwanda have expressed interest in replicating the model, recognizing its potential to address similar challenges.

Ghana’s approach offers a replicable framework for other African nations:

Scalable – Infrastructure is already in place.

Cost-effective – Leverages existing teacher development systems.

Sustainable – Built-in content management and feedback loops ensure long-term viability.

This initiative aims to prove that AI can be deployed ethically, responsibly, and in ways that respect local contexts. It shows that African governments can lead innovation, not just adopt it, and Ghana’s blueprint may well become the foundation for a continent-wide transformation.

Speaking about the subject specific App roll out and the use of AI in Ghana’s education, the Director General, Prof Bekoe said “NaCCA, together with the Ministry of Education and other agencies are working with some AI and Apps initiatives such as L4H, Code Raccoon and other organizations in developing more Apps to aid teaching and learning in our schools.

We are also calling on all EdTech companies in Ghana with interest in developing Apps to aid teaching and learning to contact NaCCA for guidelines and approval before making them available to the public.”

Education minister petitioned to constitute independent committee on GTEC boss’s promotion

Haruna Iddrisu is the Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu is the Minister of Education

Pressure is growing on the Minister of Education to launch an independent investigation into the promotion of the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, following renewed questions about transparency and fairness in the process.

In a press statement signed by Emmanuel Akanpaadgi, a lecturer at Bolgatanga Technical University on behalf of the Concerned Lecturers at Public Universities on November 16, 2025, raised the concern about what they describe as “inconsistencies in information provided by the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), regarding Prof Jinapor’s initial denied promotion, subsequent appeal and eventual approval.”

The matter resurfaced after the release of documents through a Right to Information (RTI) request, which revealed details about the academic assessment process that first led to the denial of the GTEC boss’s promotion.

UEW later issued revised information to clarify aspects of the initial release, but the revisions have sparked public calls for further clarification.

According to the statement, “the evolving disclosures have raised three key questions:

“The independence of university decision-making, given Prof. Jinapor’s regulatory authority over tertiary institutions as GTEC Director-General.

“The transparency and consistency of UEW’s promotion procedures, including the number of assessors and the criteria used.

“The adequacy of quality-assurance checks to ensure that publications submitted for promotion met the required academic standards.”

Stakeholders argue that the situation reflects broader systemic challenges in academic promotions at a time when GTEC itself is leading efforts to sanitise the acquisition of academic titles in Ghana.

To safeguard public confidence in the higher education system, the statement calls on the Minister of Education to “immediately constitute an independent committee to review all documents and circumstances surrounding the promotion and its subsequent reconsideration.”

The committee, they argue, should determine whether due process was followed and whether any form of influence affected the outcome.

They further urged that the findings of the probe be made public to reinforce transparency and accountability in the governance of Ghana’s tertiary education sector.

The statement concludes with an appeal to the minister to treat the matter as one of urgent national interest.

President Mahama’s labour export plan aims for $20 billion in yearly inflows

Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum is Minister of State in charge of Special Initiatives Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum is Minister of State in charge of Special Initiatives

The Minister of State in charge of Special Initiatives, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, has outlined the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s comprehensive labour-export strategy aimed at reducing unemployment, boosting foreign exchange inflows and improving the skills base of Ghana’s workforce.

Ghana’s Non-Traditional Exports hit $2.25 billion in 2024 – GFZA boss

Speaking during a media engagement on November 17, 2025, the minister said the initiative rooted in the vision of President John Dramani Mahama is designed to tackle three major challenges: high unemployment, low forex inflows and limited skills development.

According to him, the programme is not limited to any specific sector but adopts a holistic, nationwide approach.

Agyekum said the initiative targets both skilled and unskilled labour across several industries.

Private sector central to-economic growth -Free-Zones Authority Deputy-CEO

According to him, skilled categories include doctors, nurses, carpenters, masons, steel benders, lab technicians, pharmacists, welders, fabricators, bricklayers and chefs.

He added that non-skilled workers such as general labourers, helpers, seasonal farm workers, and individuals who undergo basic six-week marine training to work on cruise or cargo ships will also benefit.

He emphasised the growing global demand for labour, particularly in the marine, construction and hospitality industries.

Justifying the projected revenue, the minister cited global examples where labour export has significantly boosted national economies.

He referenced the Philippines, which reportedly earns over $130 billion annually from labour export and India, which made more than $126 billion in 2023 and over $130 billion in 2024 through similar policies.

Countries such as Egypt and Morocco also earn billions with Egypt receiving over $35 billion and Morocco more than $11 billion from labour remittances.

“These figures are not far-fetched, with proper structuring, Ghana can also generate between $10 to $20 billion from labour export,” he said.

The minister disclosed that seven ministries have been tasked to collaborate in structuring the initiative, given its cross-sectoral nature. These include the ministries of Education, Health, Works and Housing, Agriculture, Fisheries and others.

“We are not looking at nurses alone, we are looking at teachers, carpenters, masons, welders, farmers, everyone. It is a coordinated effort.”

Agyekum emphasised that the safety and rights of Ghanaian workers abroad are paramount. As part of the framework, all Ghanaian embassies will have dedicated desk officers to handle labour-related concerns.

Additionally, Ghana is signing Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with partner countries to ensure the welfare and protection of exported labour.

He explained that individuals interested in opportunities will be required to register into a national database. Once vacancies or foreign requests arise, qualified applicants will be contacted based on their skill set.

Let's save NPP

0

Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng Opinion 7 minutes read

I am amazed how members of the NPP National Executive and some regional chairpersons are going about their daily routine as if they do not know the state of the party, the mood of majority of party members and the potential danger awaiting the party in the near future.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the last general election by a disgraceful margin, and instead of documenting and analyzing the factors that led to that painful and disgraceful defeat, and taking remedial measure to prevent future disgrace, the National Executive hiding behind a spineless National Executive Council (NEC) decided to hide a hastily prepared report from the Ghanaian public.

To add insult to injury, the National Executive again, hiding behind the spineless NEC, took a decision to abandon the time-tested and wise tradition of electing the flag-bearer of the party for the next general election two years before the elections when the party is in opposition, and decided a top-down approach of conducting that election almost three years before the next general election.

The incompetent national executive members and their puppet masters that led the party to the abominable and disgraceful defeat are orchestrating these schemes just because they want their preferred candidate to be elected again, whether by fair or foul means, so that they would have a chance of being elected again to the National Executive Committee. Whom do the National Executive and the NEC think they are deceiving? This top-down approach is the beginning of rigging and corruption of the electoral process. What follows a corrupt internal election is aggrieved NPP members and sympathizers not turning up to vote in a General Election as was witnessed in December 2024.

Do they think discerning NPP members, and for that matter Ghanaians, can’t see the evil schemes being hatched? Privately, and in some cases openly, people are talking against this pinnacle of corruption and it appears nothing can be done about it. Our fathers and mothers who fought for the independence of the country were not that docile.

The last elections that elected Dr. Bawumia as flagbearer was conducted in similar fashion, typical of recent NPP internal elections. The whole of the Akufo-Addo government apparatus and the party machinery were mobilized to favour the election of Dr. Bawumia, the establishment candidate. Weak delegates had their arms twisted, corrupt ones were allegedly bribed, and the cowardly were intimidated to vote for Dr. Bawumia. The backlash was the staying away of hundreds of thousands of NPP members from voting. Party apathy, coupled with blatant corruption, economic mismanagement, disregard of environmental degradation and “do-nothing” attitude towards pollution of water bodies, must have contributed to the loss of the elections in December 2024

Those who think the party belongs to them and therefore do whatever pleases them are at it again. They will stop at nothing in rigging the evil-intended January 2026 elections for Dr. Bawumia. One of the regional Chairpersons of the NPP shamelessly announced recently that they would do everything in their power to get Dr. Bawumia elected as the flag-bearer. The NPP hierarchy and their puppet masters may shamelessly want to add manipulation of the election registers to other corrupt practices they seem to have perfected over the years to conduct the January 2026 one.

What do they take us for? Idiots? No. This fraud must be prevented. The theft must not be allowed to go on. Those who engineered the “top-down” scheme don’t want clean elections.
I had always believed that in Ghana the NPP is the only major political party whose foundations are based on the principles of the rule of law, respect for the rights, opinions and dignity of the individual, fundamental human rights, pluralism and above all the separation of powers. The NPP tradition, as far as I know, does not believe that political power should be entrusted into the hands of one individual or a group of individuals and their family and friends.

It is pathetic that the Chairman of the Council of Elders has allowed the Party to come to this state. Allegedly, the Chairman ignores the wise counsel of some his colleagues on the council, such as Kwame Pianim, Kwadwo Mpiani, and Dr. Agyei Bawuah, and rather carries out the wishes of the former President. He then hides behind a National Executive Council to take unwise decisions that have the potential of destroying the NPP.

Having done a lot of good for the NPP in the past, It would be most unfortunate for the Chairman to end his political career with the NPP in this sorry state. If I had my way, I would postpone the January 2026 flag-bearer elections and go back to the time-tested down to top approach.

If the ill-conceived January 2026 election is allowed to go on, the NPP stands the risk of another flag-bearer race being supervised by the same biased party machinery which was mobilized to favour Dr. Bawumia, their preferred candidate.

Allowing the January 2026 flag-bearer election to be managed by an incompetent National Executive, and supervised by a toothless National Executive Council remotely controlled by a past President and his family members through the Chairman of the Council of Elders and the likes of him, removes any level playing field for the other candidates- it favours one candidate, the previously failed flag-bearer.

We endured a variation of “family and friends’ government”, that controlled the press not through violence but through bribery and intimidation. We witnessed the weaponization of state institutions that attempted to silence transformative voices while allowing patronized corruption to flourish. Instead of development in freedom, we witnessed unprecedented intimidation, economic retrogression, and widespread corruption. The NPP and its government did not have the balls to curb illegal mining and its attendant destruction of the environment. Now, the party in opposition does not have the moral courage to criticize the NDC that is neck-deep in Galamsey, and has taken environmental destruction to a much higher level.

A resurgent NPP must have the courage to process all the above and in the end come out with people Ghanaians can trust to run the party and a future government. Instead, we are busy looking for problems when the solutions are staring us in the face.

My candid advice or suggestion is that the NPP must be watchful. Don’t fall for any diversionary tactics. Those who conceptualized and are rolling out the top-down election process will stop at nothing to rig the elections for Dr. Bawumia.

It appears Dr, Bawumia is enjoying being used to destroy the NPP. If he cannot read between the lines because of power, fame, and wealth then I want him to think carefully about his future and reputation. However, if he is aware of the implications of his action, then I would like to call on sane majority in the NPP to reject this top-down election purposely designed to elect Dr. Bawumia, no matter what Mr. Hackman Owusu-Agyeman and President Akufo-Addo say or do.

As reported by several news outlets and on social media, on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo hosted a breakfast meeting with the five presidential aspirants of the NPP at his private residence in Nima, Accra.

“The meeting was convened ..…. to foster a spirit of camaraderie and unity ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for 31st January 2026, and to underscore the critical importance of a cohesive party for the 2028 general elections.”

The invitation by the former President gave an indication that he approves and supports the top-down election arrangement that has brought division and acrimony into the NPP. I am of the strong opinion that anybody who supports such division has no business organizing a breakfast or any other meeting to foster camaraderie or unity. As a Ghanaian saying goes: “One cannot muddy the river upstream and then rush secretly downstream to complain that the river has become muddy and needs treatment”. Such behaviour is the hallmark of a traitor and nation wrecker.

My two questions to delegates are: Do we want those who when in government, neglected the grassroots, ruined the economy of Ghana, and also adopted a lukewarm attitude towards the environment and its biodiversity to be in charge of the NPP again going into the General Elections in December 2028?

Do we want an all-inclusive NPP or one that is controlled by people, including an arrogant but otherwise empty “Prime Minister”, a declared fugitive, and their other “Nouveau Riche” family members and friends to continue to control the Party post January 2026? Niemals!

I’ll uphold rule of law, respect separation of powers

Prof Gyampo threatens legal action over alleged defamatory TV comments

Professor Ransford Gyampo, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, has demanded a full retraction and apology from Dr. George Domfeh over comments made on TV3’s The Key Point on November 15, 2025.

South Korea friendly will be a good test for our defenders – Ghana coach Otto Addo – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Ghana head coach Otto Addo has described the upcoming international friendly match against South Korea as a good test for his side.

The Black Stars, after losing 2-0 to Japan last week, will face off with South Korea on Tuesday in their last game in the November international break.

Speaking in his pre-match interview, Otto Addo acknowledged the quality in the South Korea team, especially in the attack, insisting that it will be a good game for his defenders to show what they are made of.

“It’s a good game for our defenders. They will have a strong opponent, and it will be good for us to see how good they are. I know that they can do it,” the Ghana coach said as quoted on ghanafa.org.

Ahead of the friendly, the Black Stars coach is wary of the threat of South Korean legend Son Heung-min.

Otto Addo believes his team can stop the former Tottenham Hotspur star on the matchday.

“He’s good on the ball, he shoots left and right. We have to prevent and stop his shots, which are very, very crucial. He has good runs, we have to make good decisions, especially in our defence, when to attack him, but also when to drop in case there’s space and he can run into the space.

“We’re a little bit lucky that now he’s not 24 or 25 anymore. He’s also getting older, so I think we have a good chance to stop him,” Otto Addo added.

Tuesday’s friendly match between South Korea and Ghana will kick off at 11 am at the World Cup Stadium in Seoul.

‘I can talk to ghosts’ – Diana Hamilton

0

Ghanaian gospel star Diana Hamilton has sparked conversation after revealing in a new interview that she believes she can speak to ghosts.

The award-winning musician made the unexpected statement during a lively appearance on Hitz FM’s morning show with hosts Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio on Monday November 17.

Hamilton, known for her powerful worship anthems noted that “I’m your classic sanguine… I’m a helpless sanguine.”

Adding, “I can talk to a ghost unless I don’t want to talk to you.” Her comment left both hosts stunned, prompting Doreen Avio to react with a shocked “Wow.”

Hamilton went on to say her dominant sanguine side — which she estimates at “90 percent” — fuels her creativity and makes her naturally talkative and sociable.

“Sanguines talk. We’re the life of the party,” she noted, linking the trait to her once-considered path in journalism. “I could have done it… if I had taken it seriously.”

Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio also highlighted Hamilton’s versatility, pointing to the engaging voiceovers she adds to her social media reels. The singer, amused, replied that she hadn’t listened back to many of them, joking about the similarities between her work and the journalists’ own.

Diana Hamilton’s revelation has sparked curiosity and conversation online, adding an unexpected twist to her public persona. Whether taken literally or as a humorous reflection of her personality, the statement underscores her vibrant, expressive nature — one fans have long seen reflected in her music and media presence.

NPP Primaries: Dr Bawumia storms Central Region to consolidate lead

0

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is taking the next phase of his “Our Journey Together” tour to the Central Region, a crucial area in the 2028 NPP primaries.

Dr Bawumia, who has been relentlessly touring constituencies across the country, completed a tour of the Volta Region over the weekend and has now moved straight to the Central Region, beginning, Monday, November 17, 2025.

He began the Central Regional tour in the Awutu Senya East constituency on Monday morning and is expected to visit Gomoa East, Awutu Senya West and Effutu later in the day. Day one of the tour marks the start of his plan to visit all 23 constituencies in the region.

The Central Region has become an area of interest in the 2028 NPP primaries for Dr Bawumia, as it is the home region of another contender, Kennedy Agyapong, who, until the last Parliament, was the MP for Assin Central.

However, ahead of the election in January, surveys have consistently projected Dr Bawumia as being ahead of Kennedy Agyapong in the Central Region—an advantage the former Vice President is seeking to consolidate through his direct engagement with constituencies.

In one of the latest polls by Global Info Analytics, released at the end of September, Dr Bawumia led in the Central Region with 57%, while Kennedy Agyapong followed with a combined 32%.

With the polls conducted before Dr Bawumia’s recent grassroots engagements, his campaign expects to consolidate his lead through his charisma and direct interactions with party delegates.

Political lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Professor Ransford Gyampo, has opened up after his clash on national television with Dr George Domfeh, a senior lecturer at the university.

In a series of posts shared on social media, Professor Gyampo, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA), thanked his well-wishers for reaching out to him after the incident.

He was particularly grateful to those who praised him for showing restraint during the incident.

The Shippers Authority boss asserted that he remains undeterred by the incident and will continue to fight for the progress of the country.

“Thanks to all who have called to appreciate my self-restraint in the face of the little-mind attack. But I would forcefully repeat this: THOSE WHO DESTROYED THE COUNTRY WOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO FRUSTRATE THOSE RESETTING IT, NEVER!” he wrote.

In an earlier post, Professor Gyampo claimed that some persons, whom he described as “little minds,” are sent by “those who destroyed the country” to attack the good works of the current government but will be stopped.

‘Was it a trap?’ – Dr Domfeh slams media house over video of ugly fight with Prof Gyampo

“We know their plan to send little minds to come attack us during such important discussions on TV. But we have the resilience to deal with them.

“We won’t allow those who destroyed the country to frustrate those resetting it, NEVER,” he said.

About the incident:

The two lecturers at the University of Ghana came under heavy criticism after a video of them trading insults went viral on social media.

In the video circulating on November 15, 2025, a lecturer at the Political Science Department and CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, is seen in a heated altercation with Dr George Domfeh, also a senior lecturer at UG.

In the less-than-one-minute footage, the two lecturers, who appeared on TV3’s The Key Points show, were seen exchanging insults after their discussion turned personal.

Dr Domfeh, while making his submission, was heard alleging that Prof Gyampo is politically biased, accusing him of being self-centred during his tenure as UG-UTAG president.

“Nobody is more political than Prof Gyampo. Everything about you is political. When you were UTAG president, look at what you did… Shame on you,” he said.

Prof Gyampo, who appeared visibly upset, fired back and accused Dr Domfeh of being unfit as an academic.

“I am political about what?… You are not an academic. Shame on you. What you are doing is shameful,” Gyampo retorted.

Another video circulating on Facebook shows the two lecturers in a near-fistfight, with Dr Domfeh heard making further allegations against Prof Gyampo, including claims about inappropriate conduct with students. These allegations remain unverified and were made during the altercation.

“You are a fool. You are a professor who sleeps with children,” Domfeh alleged.

Over 1,600 Ghanaians were duped by fraudulent visa agents in 2024 – British High Commission

0

The situation has resulted in severe long-term consequences, including 10-year visa bans The situation has resulted in severe long-term consequences, including 10-year visa bans

More than 1,600 Ghanaians were duped by fraudulent agents when applying for UK visit visas in 2024, resulting in severe long-term consequences, including 10-year visa bans.

While this accounts for only 4% of applicants, officials warn that even a single case of visa fraud can cause significant financial and emotional harm.

In response, the High Commissions of Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom in Ghana have announced a one-week public awareness campaign to educate applicants and prevent further cases.

“In 2024, 1,632 applicants from Ghana used fraudulent means when applying for UK visit visas. While that represents only 4% of all Ghanaian applicants, it is still far too many people misled by agents into taking an action that resulted in a 10-year visa ban. Fraud is never worth the risk,” Dr Christian Rogg, British High Commissioner said.

Australia, Canada, UK join forces amid rising visa fraud cases in Ghana

The campaign coincides with International Fraud Awareness Week (16–22 November 2025) and is part of a global effort supported by partner countries, including New Zealand.

“Visa fraud continues to affect many Ghanaians, with fraudulent agents and misinformation leading to financial loss, emotional distress, and long-term travel restrictions. This initiative is part of a wider global effort led by UK Visas & Immigration,” the joint statement issued on Monday, November 17, 2025, said.

Berenice Owen-Jones, Australian High Commissioner, added, “Australia is proud to stand with our international partners to combat visa fraud. The Fighting Visa Fraud campaign sends a clear message — always use trusted, official sources and beware of anyone promising shortcuts or guaranteed results.”

Meanwhile, the High Commissions urged all Ghanaians applying for visas to Australia, Canada, or the UK to use only official government channels.

Family and friends rule threatens NPP’s future, says former Minister Prof Frimpong-Boateng

0

Former Environment Minister Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng has warned over what he calls the “family and friends rule” threatening the future of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an article titled ‘Let’s save NPP’, he said the party’s leadership is ignoring the mood of its members and the danger looming over its future.

“I am amazed how members of the NPP National Executive and some regional chairpersons are going about their daily routine as if they do not know the state of the party, the mood of the majority of party members and the potential danger awaiting the party in the near future,” he said.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng criticised the party for failing to learn from its “disgraceful” defeat in the last general election.

Instead of analysing the loss, he said, the National Executive, hiding behind a “spineless” National Executive Council (NEC), has concealed reports and abandoned the tradition of electing a flag-bearer two years before the election.

He called the top-down approach a “beginning of rigging and corruption of the electoral process.”

“The incompetent national executive members and their puppet masters that led the party to the abominable and disgraceful defeat are orchestrating these schemes just because they want their preferred candidate to be elected again, whether by fair or foul means,” he said.

He warned that the party risks low voter turnout among disillusioned members, as was witnessed in December 2024.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng specifically named Dr Bawumia, the current favourite for the January 2026 flag-bearer race, saying the last internal election that elected him was manipulated.

“Weak delegates had their arms twisted, corrupt ones were allegedly bribed, and the cowardly were intimidated to vote for Dr Bawumia,” he said.

He added that this led to widespread apathy and contributed to the party’s electoral defeat.

He warned that the same “family and friends government” mentality is at play again.

“Those who conceptualised and are rolling out the top-down election process will stop at nothing to rig the elections for Dr Bawumia,” he said.

He criticised the Chairman of the Council of Elders for ignoring wise counsel from senior party members like Kwame Pianim, Kwadwo Mpiani, and Dr Agyei Bawuah.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng accused the former President and his allies of controlling the party remotely through the Chairman and creating a biased environment.

“Allowing the January 2026 flag-bearer election to be managed by an incompetent National Executive, and supervised by a toothless NEC remotely controlled by a past President and his family members, removes any level playing field,” he said.

He also highlighted the legacy of the previous NPP government, describing it as a variation of “family and friends’ government” that “controlled the press not through violence but through bribery and intimidation” and failed to curb corruption, environmental degradation, and economic mismanagement.

The former minister called on the party to reject divisive tactics and ensure fairness in the upcoming election.

“If Dr Bawumia cannot read between the lines because of power, fame, and wealth, then I want him to think carefully about his future and reputation,” he said.

He urged delegates to consider whether they want a party controlled by the same individuals who “neglected the grassroots, ruined the economy, and adopted a lukewarm attitude towards the environment” to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng concluded that the party must return to a time-tested bottom-up approach and avoid falling for schemes designed to consolidate power within a select circle.

“Do we want an all-inclusive NPP or one that is controlled by people, including an arrogant but otherwise empty ‘Prime Minister,’ a declared fugitive, and their other ‘Nouveau Riche’ family members and friends to continue to control the Party post January 2026? Niemals!”

Ensure justice is not tilted toward the powerful

0

President John Dramani Mahama has urged the newly sworn-in Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, to ensure that the country’s justice system remains fair, balanced, and accessible to all, regardless of wealth or influence.

Addressing the Chief Justice on Monday, November 17, President Mahama expressed confidence in Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s leadership and called for a judiciary that protects human rights and civil liberties without favour.

“I trust that under your stewardship, the Judiciary will [ensure] the protection of human rights and civil liberties and that the Judiciary will ensure that justice is not tilted in favour of the wealthy or powerful,” he said.

President Mahama further urged the Chief Justice to strengthen specialised courts and divisions to deal effectively with issues such as family welfare, land disputes, commercial disputes, environmental protection, and corruption.

He also encouraged the promotion of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to complement the formal court system, especially in community and family-related matters.

“Justice must not be an abstract principle confined to law books. It must be seen, felt, and experienced in the daily life of our people,” he stressed.

The  President also called for the strengthening of the Judicial Training Institute as a centre of excellence for continuing legal education to ensure that members of the judiciary remain well-equipped to deliver justice efficiently and impartially.

Muntaka orders probe into video of Immigration officials dragging deportee on the floor

0

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has ordered an immediate investigation into a disturbing viral video that appears to show Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) personnel in uniform aggressively dragging a sick United States deportee on the floor from a hotel at Ogbojo, Accra.

The incident, which caused widespread social media outrage, allegedly occurred despite indications that the individual was unwell and on medication.

A dramatic and tense situation unfolded at the VICSEM Hotel on November 11, 2025, as GIS officials attempted to forcibly remove a group of deportees recently repatriated from the United States.

Immigration officials were spotted in viral videos dragging a woman on the floor into a waiting vehicle.

The intention of their action is not clear but the attempted removal suggests officials were trying to move the individuals from the hotel facility where they were initially accommodated upon arrival. The development attracted a sharp condemnation from human rights lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, November 17, Alhaji Muntaka addressed the controversy directly, expressing deep regret and assuring the public of swift action to ascertain the facts and enforce professional conduct standards within the security services.

Immediate Investigation and Medical Context

Alhaji Muntaka confirmed that he has taken immediate steps to hold the GIS accountable and understand the circumstances leading to the use of force captured in the video.

“Well, let me say that it’s just so unfortunate, and I’ve instructed the Comptroller General of Immigration to investigate that and get me a report on it, which I’m sure I should get this week.”

He suggested a potential medical reason for the deportee’s erratic behaviour, noting that the individual was likely undergoing a critical episode during the encounter.

“This lady was supposed to be on medication, and I think she didn’t take her medication. So, I don’t know if she became violent and that resulted in that. But I will not want to pre-empt the report that they will render to me.”

Assurance of Dignity and Respect for West African Citizens

The minister strongly denied any implication that the government or its agencies are intentionally involved in the molestation or ill-treatment of individuals repatriated from the diaspora.

He emphasised Ghana’s commitment to treating its foreign neighbours and deportees with dignity, particularly those from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“I can assure you that we believe that we are brothers and sisters. Our brothers and sisters from the West African countries will be treated with the utmost respect. We will do everything humanely possible to treat them well just as we treat our own citizens.”

Alhaji Muntaka asserted that the state does not sanction the mistreatment of US deportees:

“There’s no any connivance or government involvement in trying to molest anybody that was brought in from the United States of America.”

Protocol for Deportees and Embassy Coordination

Alhaji Muntaka detailed the standard operational protocol for handling individuals deported to Ghana, noting that the process is coordinated closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the relevant diplomatic missions in Accra.

The goal is to facilitate safe and voluntary onward travel or residency, provided there is no criminal background.

“We will continue to give them the best of services that we can and be able to encourage them to have their options. If you want to stay, then let the embassy pick you up. If you want to go back to your country, we’ll facilitate your movement. And we’ll do this with the involvement of their embassy because we call the embassies in. Sometimes they give us a travel certificate and then we’ll move them to their country.”

He reiterated that the core principle is respectful treatment and due process for all foreign nationals brought into the country:

“We continue to work with the foreign ministry and their various missions in Accra to make sure that every citizen of the West African that is brought into our country is treated with respect. And like I said, while that person doesn’t have any criminal background and the person wants to stay, we’ll encourage the embassy to come forward and pick them so that they can stay with them. As far as I’m concerned, almost everybody is gone.”

The findings of the GIS investigation into the Ogbojo incident are now keenly awaited, with the report expected by the end of the week.
