Ghana’s credit rating upgraded to CCC+ by S&P amid debt restructuring progress

0

The decision reflects Ghana’s recent progress in restructuring its outstanding commercial debt, particularly following the country’s successful Eurobond exchange programme in October 2024.

In its latest update, the United States-based ratings agency stated that the outlook for both Ghana’s foreign and local currency ratings remains stable. Additionally, the assessment of transferability and convertibility is also held at CCC+.

According to S&P, Ghana is nearing the final stages of negotiations to restructure debts owed to external lenders, including commercial banks. These efforts are a continuation of the government’s broader strategy to reduce its unsustainable debt levels and restore macroeconomic stability.

S&P noted: “Ghana has taken recent steps to restructure remaining commercial debt,” adding that these moves mark a significant milestone in its post-default recovery path.

The agency pointed to Ghana’s “supportive economic growth, ongoing fiscal reforms, and improved external position” as crucial factors that balance out ongoing challenges such as high debt servicing obligations and fiscal slippages typically seen during election years.

Ghana has experienced improvements in its external financial metrics, including a boost in foreign exchange reserves and stronger gold export revenues. Inflation, which currently stands at 21.2%, is on a downward trend, aided by a firming of the Ghanaian cedi and falling global energy prices.

Despite the positive trajectory, S&P issued a cautionary note about the country’s long-term debt sustainability. It highlighted that external debt comprises 62% of total government liabilities, which is equivalent to around 49% of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

S&P warned that the nation’s fiscal health remains “highly vulnerable to exchange rate volatility and fluctuations in global commodity prices.”

Persistent challenges remain

Ghana continues to grapple with structural issues such as ineffective tax collection, periodic overspending—particularly around elections—and a high cost of servicing debt. These factors, while not derailing the recent credit rating upgrade, still pose significant risks to economic stability.

Tension as Annoh-Dompreh kept hostage during Nsawam-Adoagyiri MCE confirmation

0

Tensions flared at the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly as Member of Parliament Frank Annoh-Dompreh was effectively held hostage following a heated confirmation process for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee.

The chaos erupted after the MP attempted to assert his role as a polling agent during the voting process but was met with strong resistance from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy Regional Organizer, David Dakudzi, and local police.

Prior to the polls, reports indicated that Annoh-Dompreh had vowed to block the confirmation of Philibert Fumey Selorm, the MCE nominee, who had previously challenged him in the 2024 parliamentary elections—a contest that ended up in court.

As tensions escalated inside the assembly hall, clashes broke out between supporters of the nominee and the MP, with the situation remaining volatile until the final vote was cast.

Following the voting, police officers formed a security cordon around the counting center where Electoral Commission officials tallied the ballots. The nominee secured confirmation with 29 out of 38 votes.

However, the announcement further enraged NDC supporters, who demanded that Annoh-Dompreh be released to them, shouting threats of retaliation. Police swiftly intervened, escorting the MP to the municipal NADMO office under heavy security as angry protesters gave chase.

The incident comes just weeks after a Koforidua High Court dismissed an election petition challenging Annoh-Dompreh’s 2024 parliamentary victory. The case, which sought to nullify his win, was struck out following a legal application filed by Gary Nimako Marfo, the New Patriotic Party’s Director of Legal Affairs.

The standoff highlights deepening political divisions in the constituency, raising concerns over future governance and security in the area.

2 Arrested In Twifo Praso Murder Case

The suspects

Two persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of 34-year-old Tahiru Zenabu at Kokoase, a suburb of Twifo Praso in the Central Region.

The suspects were arrested by the Central North Regional Police Command after one of them used the victim’s mobile phone to call a friend of the deceased.

The two, Richard Armah and Isaac Arhin have since been hauled before court and remanded into police custody to reappear on May 21, 2025, as investigations continue.

Zenabu was found dead in her room on April 3, 2025, with a cloth tied around her neck and blood stains on her hands, indicating a possible struggle before her death.

Following a month-long investigation, police made a breakthrough on May 5 when one of the suspects, Richard Armah, a mobile phone repairer and spinner residing in Twifo Aboabo, used the deceased’s phone to contact one of her friends.

The friend, recognising the phone number, immediately reported to the police.

Acting swiftly, police traced and arrested Richard Armah, who, during interrogation, mentioned Isaac Arhin as his accomplice.

Arhin was also arrested shortly afterward.

The deceased’s mobile phone has since been recovered and is now in police custody as evidence.

Meanwhile, the police have commended the community for their cooperation and the prompt action of the victim’s friend, which played a crucial role in tracking down the suspects.

Strike out suit against BoG and immediate paste Governor over cedi depreciation as there is no reasonable course of action

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has filed a motion at the High Court in Accra asking the court to strike out a suit filed by a Ghanaian retiree who has dragged the bank and its immediate past Governor, Dr Ernest Addison, to court, citing gross negligence in the management of the Ghana Cedi

According to the Bank of Ghana the pleadings by the plaintiff, does not disclose any reasonable cause of action.

The motion will be moved by counsel for the BoG on Thursdat May 15.

It is also the case of the the BoG that the application constitutes an abuse of the court’s process per the terms of the accompanying affidavit and for such orders as the court may deem fit.

In a writ filed at the Accra High Court, the plaintiff, Balbir Violet Allan, a resident of Adabraka, avers that when the Governor assumed office in February 2017, the cedi-dollar exchange rate was GH¢4.26 to $1.

However, by February 3, this year — when the Governor proceeded on terminal leave — the rate had surged to GH¢15.49 to $1, representing a depreciation of approximately 264 per cent.

The Bank of Ghana is the first defendant with Dr Ernest Addison, the immediate past Governor as the second defendant.

The plaintiff claims that the significant decline in the value of the cedi has caused substantial losses in the value and purchasing power of her investments in government treasuries, particularly ESLA Bonds.

In the suit, filed by lawyer for the plaintiff, John E. Baiden of The Liberty Institute Law Firm, the plaintiff argues that while the law mandated the Bank of Ghana, through its Governor, to provide the state with a stable currency, the second defendant allegedly chose to allow the value of the cedi to be determined solely by market forces, including demand and supply on the foreign exchange (forex) markets, leading to its instability and volatility.

It is the case of the plaintiff that the immediate past Governor allegedly failed to develop or implement any credible plan consistent with the law to stabilise the currency.

As Governor, Ms Balbir said he also served as the Chairperson of the BoG’s Board and its Monetary Policy Committee, which was legally responsible for formulating and executing monetary policy measures, including efforts to stabilise the currency.

“The second defendant has so controlled and conducted the affairs of the first defendant in a manner that extensive harm has befallen the cedi, including that of the plaintiff’s, as the dictates of justice would justify the legal mandate of the 1st defendant are made coterminous with the mandate of the second defendant who is not only the Governor but Chairperson of the first defendant’s Board and its Monetary Policy Committee,” the writ stated.

The plaintiff indicated that she formally notified the former Governor on May 30, 2024, of her intention to sue if no efforts were made to restore the cedi’s soundness and value.

However, no remedial action was taken, prompting the current legal action.

Reliefs

Ms Balbir said that unless an order to recover her losses was granted by the court, she would have no recourse for recovery or restitution of the lost value of investment capital.

She is, therefore, asking the court to lift the corporate veil shielding the Bank of Ghana and to hold both the bank and the former Governor jointly and severally liable for her investment losses.

Among other reliefs, the plaintiff is seeking a declaration that the second defendant had been grossly negligent, allegedly in the management of the Ghana Cedi through the first defendant (BoG).

Also, a declaration that the exchange rate losses she had suffered were enforceable against both defendants, jointly and severally.

Ahanta West MCE engages Apimanim community on Cassava Processing Plant Project

In a significant move to stimulate local economic development, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ahanta West, Hon. Ing. Ebenezer Aidoo, has engaged the chiefs, elders, and residents of Apimanim on the planned construction of a cassava processing facility in the community.

The engagement forms part of the Assembly’s broader strategy to promote agro-industrial development and inclusive growth within the municipality. “Your generosity in releasing land for this initiative is a demonstration of patriotism and commitment to development,” Hon. Aidoo stated during the meeting.

He added, “This facility will open up new economic opportunities—particularly in job creation, value addition, and agricultural advancement.”

Hon. Aidoo, who was recently confirmed in office with overwhelming community backing, expressed his gratitude to the people of Apimanim for making land available for the project.

The proposed facility is expected to significantly enhance cassava production and processing in the area, establishing a direct link between local farming and industrial markets. It also aligns with the national agenda of promoting agro-processing and value addition as key pillars of Ghana’s sustainable development strategy.

The MCE was accompanied by senior officials from the Assembly, including the Municipal Coordinating Director, Madam Joyce Akosua Angmorteh; Municipal Planning Officer, Pln. Jalil Ali Mahama, Municipal Director of Agriculture, Mr. Dennis Adjei Antwi, and staff from the Works Department. The team visited the proposed project site to assess its readiness for construction.

They pledged their full support and cooperation to ensure the project’s success.

This community engagement underscores the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly’s commitment to participatory governance and the implementation of development projects tailored to the needs of local communities.

Empress Gifty chides popular pharmaceutical company for using late mother’s photo on billboards

Ghanaian gospel musician, Empress Gifty Ghanaian gospel musician, Empress Gifty

Ghanaian gospel musician Empress Gifty has expressed disappointment on Ernest Chemist using her late mother’s pictures on billboards for promotional purposes without proper protocols.

Speaking in a TikTok live video, Empress disclosed that she wasn’t informed when they were mounting another billboard after her mother’s demise.

According to her, she bought all the drugs and drips from Ernest Chemist when her late mother was admitted at the hospital and she was allowed to pay for everything fully, even after mentioning that she is buying the drugs for her mother.

“The woman you used on your billboard is dead, but I wasn’t informed before using her picture. She wasn’t just buried after demise, there was a proper funeral arrangement. I don’t need your money for anything, but it’s appropriate because you’ve worked with her before, you’ve used her pictures on your billboard nationwide. After her demise, you mount another billboard with her picture.

“When my mother was admitted at the hospital, I bought all the drugs and drips prescribed from Ernest Chemist. I bought drugs every week, the lady at the counter asked me if one person was taken all the drugs and I intentionally told her that the woman they used on their billboard was the one taking the drugs and I paid for everything fully” she said.

The award-winning gospel artiste further called out the pharmaceutical company to do the right thing by showing prove that they still have contract with her late mother.

“Ernest Chemist; do the right thing, put some respect on my mother’s name. Bring the contract you had with my mother let me confirm. It’s been four months and I’ve just kept mute” she stated.

Dedicate a unit within the police for SHS security – CHASS appeals to Minister of Education

0

Haruna Iddrisu is the Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu is the Minister of Education

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has proposed the creation of a dedicated police unit within the Ghana Police Service to address growing security concerns in senior high schools across the country.

The call was made during a meeting with the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, in Sunyani.

CHASS explained that incidents of indiscipline and threats to student safety have been on the rise in recent years, prompting the need for a more professional and authoritative security presence in schools.

According to a metrotvonline.com report, the headteachers believe that the current arrangements involving private security guards are insufficient to manage the evolving security needs of secondary schools.

“Security in our schools is no longer something we can take lightly. We need professional support to ensure that students not only feel safe, but also understand the boundaries of discipline,” a representative reportedly said.

CHASS recommended the establishment of a special unit within the Ghana Police Service, dedicated solely to educational institutions.

This unit, they proposed, would not only help maintain order, but also build a culture of discipline and respect among students, while responding swiftly to any incidents that arise.

The headteachers stressed that the presence of police officers would help prevent conflicts, control unauthorised entries, and ensure that schools remain safe spaces for both students and teaching staff.

The report added that the CHASS members also believe that professional security oversight would create an environment more conducive to learning.

The story of connecting businesses to communities

0

On a warm, expectant evening in Accra, beneath glittering chandeliers and the weight of 20 years of memories, something rare unfolded — a celebration not just of a company, but of a journey stitched together by resilience, youthful ambition, bold risks, and relentless innovation.

Billed as Hubtel’s 20th Anniversary Thanksgiving, the night quickly revealed itself to be more about a story than a milestone, brought to life by some of the country’s biggest gospel acts, including Joe Mettle, Piesie Esther, and Perez Music.

The Humble Beginnings: A Letter to God

The evening offered a deep moment of reflection for a company that has evolved from a startup to an industry leader in payment platforms and E-commerce.

Instead of a conventional CEO address, Hubtel’s co-founder and CEO, Alex Adjei Bram, read a deeply personal letter to God, recounting the twists and turns that led to Hubtel’s birth:

• The painful rejection from medical school that felt like failure but turned into divine redirection.

• The crushing political loss after graduation, armed only with a printed business card, no investors, no office, and a burning belief.

• The fragility of the early years, when faith was often the only currency.

As Bram spoke, the room fell silent, not out of politeness but reverence. Each word carried remembrance of lean times, small wins, overlooked miracles, and enduring friendships.

“We didn’t know what we were doing,” Bram admitted. “We only knew that as long as we stood for good and pursued love for our customers and mankind, You would be with us.”

Since then, Hubtel has moved through significant phases, first as the go-to bulk SMS platform for businesses, then transforming into the tech and payment giant it is today. Bram gave thanks for every door opened and closed, for early mentors, hard seasons, and a market that forced them to evolve. Above all, he thanked God for being present — not just in loud victories but in quiet, consistent provision.

A Reflection of Ghanaian Excellence

The evening also saw stirring remarks from the Minister for Communications, Digitalization, and Innovation, Sam George, a fellow alumnus of KNUST like Hubtel’s founders. He praised Hubtel’s story as a powerful reflection of Ghana’s potential.

“The Hubtel story highlights a major fact we should all be proud of as Ghanaians,” he said.

“It speaks to the power of local innovation and proves that Ghanaian talent can compete at the highest levels. You don’t have to leave Ghana to achieve greatness.”

He lauded Hubtel’s pioneering work in messaging, payment systems, and E-commerce. “When Ghana needed ways for businesses to connect faster, Hubtel built it. When payments needed to be easier, Hubtel innovated. They have not just participated in Ghana’s digital transformation; they have led it.”

A Testament to Youthful Innovation

Minister for Youth Empowerment, George Opare Addo, emphasized that Hubtel’s success is a testament to what Ghanaian youth can achieve with foresight, opportunity, and resilience.

“This is not just a celebration of a company’s milestone; it is a celebration of what the Ghanaian youth can do,” he declared.

He highlighted that every young software engineer, marketer, and delivery partner at Hubtel stands as proof that innovation can create jobs and new possibilities. Opare Addo urged more private sector players to support the government’s “one million coders” program, aimed at equipping youth with vital digital skills.

“I want to challenge not just Hubtel but the entire private sector to invest heavily in digital skills development, mentorship, and entrepreneurship support. It is the surest way to empower our youth for a digitally competitive future.”

Quiet Strength in the Business World

Patience Akyeanu, Hubtel board member and chair of its audit committee, drew on her deep experience in banking and insurance to underscore Hubtel’s often unseen but critical role in Ghana’s digital economy.

“In banking and insurance, digital transformation has shifted from a luxury to a lifeline,” she said. “At the heart of Ghana’s digital evolution, Hubtel has consistently been a key player.”

Akyeanu praised Hubtel’s early recognition that technology would be the great enabler, investing ahead of trends to build platforms that empowered businesses to connect, transact, and build trust.

The Road Ahead: A Call to Courage

Throughout the night, one theme persisted: Hubtel’s journey is far from over. Artificial intelligence, big data, and emerging financial technologies will shape the next frontier. And with Hubtel’s history of bold reinvention, tireless learning, and deep commitment to Ghana, many believe they will not just adapt to the future — they will help shape it.

About Hubtel

Ghana set for high stakes quarterfinal showdown with hosts Egypt

Players of the Black Satellites Players of the Black Satellites

Ghana’s Black Satellites are bracing themselves for a decisive clash against host nation Egypt in the quarter-finals of the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Monday, May 12, 2025, a match that carries not just the weight of progression but also the golden ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Having topped their group unbeaten with 7 points from three games, including two clean sheets and only one goal conceded, the Black Satellites arrive at the knockout stage in strong form and high spirits.

Their defensive solidity and tactical discipline have been key to their success so far, and head coach Desmond Ofei is hopeful his side can rise to the occasion once more.

Ahead of the massive encounter, Coach Desmond Ofei set the tone in a bold and passionate press conference.

“This is going to be like a final for us. It’s a qualifier to the World Cup, and that means everything. We are not just playing a nation; we are also playing against history,” he said.

The match will mark Ghana’s opportunity to return to the U-20 World Cup for the first time since 2015; a goal that has served as a strong motivating force within the squad.

There’s further good news for Ghana as dynamic attacker, Jerry Afriyie, who had temporarily left the camp to feature for his club, has returned and is back in contention for the crucial encounter.

His availability could add extra firepower to Ghana’s attack as they face a well-organised Egyptian side.

Egypt, meanwhile, progressed as one of the best third-placed teams despite a somewhat inconsistent group stage campaign.

The hosts also secured 7 points but lost to Sierra Leone in their second group game, a result that exposed some vulnerabilities in their setup.

Nevertheless, with home support and high expectations, Egypt remain a formidable opponent.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. For Ghana, it’s not just about reaching the semi-finals, it’s about booking a spot at the global stage and reigniting the rich legacy of Black Satellites football.

For Egypt, it’s about defending home soil and satisfying a demanding home crowd. As such, the game, set to kick off at 3 pm, would definitely deliver drama, tension, and a battle that could define a generation.

Railway workers threaten strike over seven-month salary arrears

0

The Railway Workers Union has threatened to halt all operations beginning Tuesday, May 13, 2025, if the Ghana Railway Company Limited fails to pay the outstanding salaries of over 900 staff members.

The workers say they have gone without pay for the past seven months, leaving many in financial distress and demanding urgent action.

The union claims the state-owned company has faced persistent challenges since the change in government, worsening their financial situation.

Speaking to Citi News, Franklin Cobbinah, the Branch Secretary of the Accra division, described the situation as dire and called for immediate government intervention.

“For the past seven months, we have not been paid. Anytime you ask, nobody is willing to volunteer information to you.

“We have tried to calm the workers down. Now, we can’t control them anymore. So, as workers, we are demanding our seven months’ salary from our management,” he stated.

The threatened strike is expected to disrupt passenger traffic between Tema and Accra, affecting thousands of daily commuters.

Expansion in slums contributing to rise in fires

0

File photo of a slum in Accra File photo of a slum in Accra

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has expressed serious concerns about the rapid expansion of slum settlements in urban areas across the country.

They warned that these unregulated and overcrowded communities significantly increase the risk of urban fires, making them hotspots for devastating incidents.

This warning follows the fire that occurred at the Sakumono-Asoprochona Railway enclave on May 5, which destroyed dozens of homes and displaced many residents.

According to the GNFS, the spread of makeshift structures, poor waste management, and insufficient access to fire safety measures in slum areas create a high-risk environment for fires.

In a report released on Sunday, May 11, 2025, Divisional Officer Grade 2 Desmond Essoun Ackah, the Head of Public Relations at the GNFS, stated that incidents of urban fires are becoming alarmingly frequent.

These incidents are often attributed to the unsafe use of open flames, illegal power connections, and negligence.

Ackah urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to take proactive measures to tackle these issues.

He emphasised the need for enforcing building codes and providing fire safety education to residents to curb the unchecked growth of slum communities and implement safety measures to prevent future tragedies.

The warning comes amid a surge in urban fires in recent years, many of which have been linked to electrical faults, improper use of fuels, and other human-related factors.

“Those people are low-income earners, and what we in the service have done over the period is to visit them, engage them, and let them know their responsibilities, especially when it comes to fire prevention.

“But as human as they are sometimes, they may be negligent, and for such places, illegal wiring is also rife. People use naked wires anyhow. Therefore, these could be the causes of fires in those areas. But if the assemblies can take this up to ensure that these slums do not erupt in the first place, or, better still, find a decent accommodation for these dwellers, it will go a long way to prevent some of these fires,” he stated.

The GNFS calls for collaborative efforts to mitigate risks and prevent devastating fires in urban slums.

Ghana beats IMF debt target three years early as Mahama tightens fiscal policy

0

In a note shared with clients, Barclays analysts Michael Kafe and Andreas Kolbe revealed that Ghana’s debt-to-GDP ratio likely fell to 54% in January 2025—down from 61.8% at the end of December 2024.

This marks a considerable achievement, arriving three years ahead of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) 2028 target under the country’s $3 billion support programme.

The analysts attribute the rapid decline to reduced government borrowing and a notable increase in the country’s gross domestic product. “Ghana’s public debt has eased earlier than expected, largely due to a bigger economy and fiscal restraint,” Kafe and Kolbe noted.

The Bank of Ghana is expected to release its official report with updated debt statistics within the next two weeks.

Following a default on external loans in 2022, Ghana turned to the IMF for assistance. Now, under the new leadership of President John Dramani Mahama—who secured a decisive victory in the December 2024 elections—the government has committed to restoring economic stability through prudent fiscal measures.

Mahama’s administration is targeting a sharp reduction in the budget deficit, aiming to bring it down to 3.1% of GDP in 2025, compared with 7.9% recorded in 2024.

Despite the positive trajectory, public debt did rise slightly in January, increasing by 3.9% month-on-month to 755 billion Ghanaian cedis (approximately $57.4 billion). This increase was mainly driven by about 10 billion cedis in domestic borrowing and a 4% depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar.

Nonetheless, the country’s nominal GDP is projected to grow significantly, reaching an estimated 1.4 trillion cedis in 2025, up from around 1.2 trillion cedis the previous year.

Barclays warned that while the outlook is encouraging, debt levels could temporarily rise as the government begins to implement its planned programmes. “Although Ghana is making progress, public debt could increase again as the administration scales up expenditure for key initiatives,” the analysts observed.

Under the terms of its agreement with the IMF, Ghana is required to carry out a series of reforms designed to bring its debt-to-GDP ratio to 55% by 2028—a target it is now well on track to meet ahead of schedule.

GHS sounds alarm over rising hypertension cases

0

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has raised a disturbing alarm about the number of Ghanaians living with hypertension who are unaware of their condition.

Statistics from the Ghana Health Service show that 50% of Ghanaians living with hypertension are oblivious to their status.

According to the Ghana Health Service, this worrying phenomenon is due to low testing rates among Ghanaians, particularly among men—as one out of every five people in Ghana has never measured their blood pressure.

Data from the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate show that the region recorded 126,110 new cases of hypertension in 2022 alone, 136, 380 in 2023, and 140, 216 in 2024.

Despite the alarming figures, health professionals are calling for greater efforts to ensure more Ghanaians are aware of their hypertensive status, warning of the severe health implications of ignorance.

As a response, the Ghana Health Service is embarking on a nationwide medical exercise aimed at measuring the blood pressure of one million Ghanaians. In the Ashanti Region alone, the Regional Health Directorate is targeting 170,000 people.

Speaking at a news conference in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng, urged Ghanaians to adopt healthier lifestyles and become more proactive in learning about their health.

“It is called a silent killer, and a lot of people with hypertension have no idea of their state, until, most of the time, they come to the hospital with complications and so, because of this, globally, the month of May has been chosen to commemorate world day to create the awareness for people to take steps and come to the facilities for their blood pressure to be managed.

“In Ghana, 50% of people with hypertension have no knowledge that they have hypertension. For every 5 people you see, one of them has hypertension in the country. For every four people you see, at least one of them has never measured his/her blood pressure,” he said.

Bawumia arrives at Mampong to pay respect at One-Week ceremony

0

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has arrived at Mampong in the Ashanti Region, to pay his respect at the One-Week Observance of the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

In a footage shared by Adom FM on X, on May 12, 2025, Dr Bawumia clad in black fugu is seen approaching the event grounds with his entourage in a show of statesmanship and solidarity.

In an emotional moment, Janet Dorothy Owusu Sechere, wife of the late Daasebre Dr Osei Bonsu II, Asante-Mamponghene, was seen shedding tears at the event as mourners consoled her with warm words.

Series of footages shared by Adom TV on X also showed traditional leaders from notable Ashanti towns arriving at the event grounds to observe and mourn with the Mampong township.

Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, who was the Second in Command to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, passed away on April 20, 2025.

He died at age 86, after a short illness, with his death formally announced to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on April 28, 2025, in line with Asante custom.

The Asantehene has directed that Daasebre Osei Bonsu II’s burial be organised within three weeks, with the one-week observation set for May 12, 2025.

Ibrahim Traoré: Inside the digital cult glorifying Burkina Faso’s military leader

0

As insurgency intensifies and civic space shrinks in the West African state, a different kind of battle is unfolding online where AI-generated images, deepfake anthems and algorithmic fervour have turned the young military leader into a digital messiah.

The face of Captain Ibrahim Traoré has been beaming across social media feeds throughout West Africa and from posters and placards hoisted in the streets of Burkina Faso‘s capital Ouagadougou, London and beyond. His image appears in various forms. Sometimes he seems stoic in military fatigues, other times draped in pan-African flags or depicted as a divine warrior glowing with celestial light.

In dozens of viral TikTok edits, Traoré leads imaginary armies, topples Western empires and is hailed as the “new [Thomas] Sankara”. The captions, bold and uncompromising, include “Africa’s Messiah!” “The People’s Captain!” and “France Must Fall!”

The images – curated, multiplied and mythologised – are now central to a rapidly evolving online movement that fuses anti-imperialism, youth frustration and pan-African aspiration.

The main concern? Many of the images used and shared across social media and the internet aren’t real. They are machine-generated hallucinations, the product of AI tools; manipulated audio and filters that feed an online ecosystem of adoration.

The pro-Traoré social media buzz took off following a protest in Ouagadougou on 30 April when tens of thousands rallied in a massive show of support for the 36-year-old military ruler. Smaller solidarity protests emerged in Accra, London and Montego Bay, Jamaica. In Nigeria, two demonstrators were charged with inciting public disturbance and conducting an unauthorised assembly for organising a procession in honour of Traoré.

But online, AI-generated images depicted fictional demonstrations in Nairobi, Harare, Kampala and even New York’s Times Square. Deepfake audio tracks mimicking the voices of global pop stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé singing praises of Traoré circulated widely, blurring the line between digital propaganda and fan-driven mythmaking.

From social media feed to frontline

Traoré seized power in September 2022 amid escalating jihadist violence and mounting public anger at French influence in Burkina Faso. He has since styled himself as a revolutionary anti-imperialist, cutting ties with France, aligning more closely with Russia and vowing to restore sovereignty in a country plagued by insurgency.

Traoré successfully cultivated an anti-colonial stance that speaks directly to a generation disillusioned by neoliberal promises and post-independence elites.

Political risk analyst Jessica Moody sees Traoré’s rise as part of a broader reckoning with decades of foreign exploitation. “This political moment is fuelled by a feeling that Africa has been taken advantage of by foreign powers for too long,” she says. “There is an upsurge in resource nationalism and a desire to ‘make Africa great again’, to regain sovereignty and develop the continent from within.”

According to Moody, France remains the primary symbol of neo-colonial frustration. “This is based on decades of companies and countries, especially France, profiting from African economies with little regard for sentiment on the ground. That frustration has been epitomised by [Emmanuel] Macron’s presidency, in which he has fundamentally failed to understand how the French are perceived in West Africa.”

More rhetoric, less reform

Much of Traoré’s appeal rests on rhetoric and not institutional reform. But that has not slowed his meteoric rise on social platforms.

“There has been a sustained sense of support for Traoré,” says security analyst Beverley Ochieng. “As a young leader and a powerful orator, he resonates with many who are increasingly questioning the relationship between African countries – especially in the Sahel – and the West. He speaks directly to a generation navigating the legacies of imperialism, post-colonialism and neo-colonialism.”

In the digital age, Ochieng says, that support feels even more amplified. “Thanks to social media, it appears global and widespread. You see it in the rhetoric of Tanzanian opposition leaders, among Kenyan officials, South African youth groups and even in personal encounters.”

“It’s algorithmic populism; emotional, visual, anti-Western and hyper-shareable,” says Burkinabe researcher Alidou Werem. “It’s about vibe and vision and not fact or policy. Social media platforms reward spectacle and Traoré’s image fits perfectly into that ecosystem.”

Digital repression by proxy

Pro-Traoré internet and social media warriors seem to stop at nothing to build and defend the image of a man who, in reality, leads a fragile transitional government in one of the world’s most unstable regions.

The glorification comes with a cost, one increasingly paid by Burkinabe journalists, activists and ordinary citizens who raise critical questions about Traoré’s rule. “We are witnessing the rise of a digitally sanctified ruler where criticism becomes sacrilege,” says Werem.

Despite his populist appeal, tangible reforms under Traoré’s leadership remain limited. While he has implemented measures such as reducing ministerial salaries and increasing civil servant wages, the broader challenges of security and governance persist. The ongoing jihadist insurgency has displaced over two million people, and much of the country remains outside state control.

Journalists in Burkina Faso are increasingly subjected to online abuse for being critical of Traoré and his junta. This, according to rights groups, reflects a broader pattern of intimidation and censorship under the country’s military-led government.

However, this isn’t merely social media toxicity. Analysts and activists warn it’s a new form of digitally outsourced repression, where the state may not have to censor because online mobs do it for them.

“Traoré’s popularity has crowded out dissenting voices,” says Ochieng. “His rhetoric still falls short of real, measurable improvements in security and civic freedoms. There is a gap between his message and the reality on the ground, something that will ultimately test his legitimacy and legacy.”

The coin’s prices have gradually decreased in response to the appreciation of the cedi against the dollar.

The Central Bank introduced the coin as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of U.S. dollars.

As of Monday, May 12 2025, the Bank reported the following updated prices:

According to the Central Bank, the initiative is designed to absorb excess liquidity in the market and help strengthen the Ghanaian cedi against major foreign currencies.

The Ghana Gold Coin is available in three denominations: one ounce, half-ounce, and quarter-ounce, and is being sold through commercial banks.

“The Ghana Gold Coin is manufactured from gold mined in Ghana and refined to 99.99 percent purity. It is issued and guaranteed by the Bank of Ghana,” the Bank stated.

Report: Bananas under threat as rising temperatures killing crops

0

London, May 12, (PA Media/dpa/GNA) – Bananas are coming under increasing threat from climate change, with farmers saying extreme weather is “killing” their crops, according to a report.

An analysis by international development charity Christian Aid released on Monday shows rising temperatures and climate-related pests are putting bananas at risk.

It found that nearly two-thirds of the most suitable banana-growing areas in Latin America and the Caribbean – a region responsible for around 80% of the world’s banana exports – could be lost by 2080 due to climate impacts.

Bananas grow in a temperature range of between 15-35 degrees Celsius but are also very sensitive to water shortages, meaning increasingly extreme weather is affecting the plant’s ability to photosynthesise.

Diseases such as fusarium tropical race 4 have also emerged as a growing threat in recent years, causing the loss of entire farms across Latin America.

Christian Aid cited farmers from the region who say their farms are “dying,” which in turn is affecting their income.

Aurelia Pop Xo, 53, a banana grower in Guatemala, said: “Climate change has been killing our crops.

“This means there is no income because we cannot sell anything. What is happening is that my plantation has been dying.

“In the past, there was a prediction that this would happen in the future, but it has come earlier, and this is because we are not taking care of our motherland, our ecosystems, and this is very worrying for our kids, and especially for our grandkids.”

In light of the findings, Christian Aid is urging developed nations to urgently reduce their carbon emissions to stem the growing impacts of climate change.

It also calls for international climate finance to support banana growers and agricultural communities to adapt to the changing climate.

Osai Ojigho, Christian Aid’s director of policy and campaigns, said: “Bananas are not just the world’s favourite fruit, but they are also an essential food for millions of people.

“The lives and livelihoods of people who have done nothing to cause the climate crisis are already under threat.”

Ojigho called on countries to use this year’s deadline for new UN national climate action plans as an opportunity to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and ensure climate finance “reaches people in desperate need of it.”

Elsewhere, consumers and businesses are being urged to choose bananas certified as Fairtrade, which ensures farmers are paid more for their crops.

Anna Pierides, Fairtrade Foundation’s senior sustainable sourcing manager for bananas, said: “Without fair prices, banana farmers simply cannot make ends meet.

“Fairtrade is committed to raising incomes, living standards and the resilience of banana producers to enable them to deal with the changing climate and to continue farming.

“One way businesses can support this is through our Shared Impact initiative, which brings buyers together to ensure longer-term sourcing commitments, greater transparency and more opportunities for banana growers to sell more on Fairtrade terms.”

Holly Woodward-Davey, project co-ordinator at Banana Link, which works across the banana supply chain, said: “The climate crisis and the associated biodiversity crisis demand a rethink of industrial food production systems, which depend on the use of increasing amounts of harmful chemicals.

“Governments must continue to take decisive action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ban the most toxic chemicals while investing in transitions to fair, stable and healthy food systems.”

Pres Mahama Urged to Intervene in Land Guards’ Seizure of Weija Irrigation Farms

0

At least 500 farmers working on the Weija Irrigation Farms have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in the seizure of their farm lands by land guards.

The farmers said they risk losing their source of livelihoods if nothing is done immediately to stop ongoing erection of pillars on the 440-acre of land by land guards.

The Head of Security, Weija Irrigation Farms, Mr Agbo Tei Unusah, also known as (Nene Wayo), made the call on behalf of the farmers in an exclusive interview with The Ghanaian Times on Friday.

He said: “the farmers had filed a complaint about the development with the Weija Divisional Police Command on Friday, but were asked to come on Monday.”

Mr Unusah appealed to President Mahama to personally intervene to stop the illegal takeover of the land, which belongs to the state.

The Head of Security said: “we believe President Mahama can resolve this matter with immediate and get us back on the field”.

Mr Unusah also stated that some of the farmers, not only earn a living through farming, but take care of others with proceeds earned from selling farm produce.

“As I speak to you, two friends are paying the medical bills of some pensioners who had been bedridden after retirement, and currently on admission at the hospital. I bet you, these pensioners may die if those taking care of them lose their source of liveli

hood,” he lamented.

Furthermore, Mr Unusah also suggested the change of the name of the farm from Weija Irrigation Farms to Tuba Irrigation Farms, since the farms were located in Tuba, and not Weija.

A source close to the Weija Divisional Police Command has confirmed the complaint from the farmers, but remained tight-lipped on the issue.

The Weija Irrigation Farms was established in 1983 by the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA), under the auspices of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), to support the cultivation of crops in order to ensure food security.

Currently, the Weija Irrigation Farms has at least 500 farmers, who are into the cultivation of vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots, onion, okra, pepper, as well as maize, cassava, and sweet potatoes for the local and export markets.

Carlo Ancelotti confirmed as new Brazil Head Coach

0

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti will leave the Spanish club at the end of the season to become the new national team coach of Brazil.

The 65-year-old Italian will officially take charge of Brazil on 26 May following the conclusion of the La Liga season.

He leaves the Santiago Bernabeu as one of the club’s most successful managers.

Ancelotti won 15 trophies across two spells as Real manager and last season led Los Blancos to a Champions League and La Liga double.

His exit comes after Sunday’s El Clasico defeat left Real seven points behind leaders Barcelona with three games remaining.

Barring a spectacular collapse from Barcelona, that result all but confirmed that Real will end the season without a trophy for the first time in four years.

You mean Sammy Gyamfi had no dollars until NDC won the elections? – Nana Aba fires back at critics

Media personality Nana Aba Anamoah Media personality Nana Aba Anamoah

Media personality Nana Aba Anamoah has slammed Ghanaians for criticising NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, over a viral video in which he is seen handing dollar bills to Agradaa.

In a post shared on May 12, 2025, Nana Aba questioned why Ghanaians are acting as though Sammy Gyamfi had never had dollars before his party assumed power.

Asking Ghanaians to cut him some slack, she quizzed, “You mean Sammy Gyamfi had no dollars until his party won the election? He had never seen dollars before January 7, 2025?” she asked sarcastically.

Nana Aba also expressed disappointment in both the public and certain media houses, describing the ongoing discussion as a shallow level of political discourse.

According to her, she initially assumed the issue was just social media chatter, until she heard it being discussed seriously on radio.

“I thought it was all social media banter until I heard the conversation on the radio. Honestly, you lot need to raise the level of political discourse,” she said.

Meanwhile, the development has sparked massive discussion on social media, drawing backlash from netizens, including some high-ranking officials from the opposition parties and even within the NDC.

Many have argued that Sammy Gyamfi’s actions violate President John Mahama’s code of conduct for public officials, which forms part of a broader anti-corruption agenda.

In response, Sammy Gyamfi has issued a public apology and has reportedly been summoned by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah.

The ‘sin’ Sammy Gyamfi committed that might cost him his job

0

Acting Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, appears to have his job on the line following a viral video of him giving an undisclosed amount of United States (US) dollars to Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist.

Calls for President John Dramani Mahama to take action against Sammy Gyamfi, who is also the National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have been followed by a summons of the CEO by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah.

According to reports, the Chief of Staff wants the Goldbod CEO to explain the circumstances surrounding his action, which has drawn disenchantment against the government and raised concerns about the ethical conduct of public officials.

But has Sammy Gyamfi, who would be leading what some have described as the biggest state-owned agency of the current government, violated the Code of Conduct which was launched literally days ago by President John Mahama?

What the Code of Conduct says about giving a gift:

Sammy Gyamfi, in an apology he posted on social media, explained that he was only helping a person in need, as he has been doing.

Sections of the Code of Conduct perhaps touch on public officers receiving gifts and giving out hampers, including gifts.

Section 1.5.12 of the Code of Conduct, which touches on “Gifts,” bars public officers from soliciting “gifts in cash or kind” in the line of their duties. It, however, states that the “exchange of gifts” is permissible because “refusing such a gift may cause offence.”

The code, however, states that gifts received by public officers must be submitted to the Secretary to the Cabinet.

“a. The Minister must submit any gift received, in Ghana or from overseas, to the Secretary to Cabinet for appropriate display;

b. Where the Minister wishes to retain gifts received, he may do so only if the estimated value does not exceed GH¢20,000;

c. Where the estimated value of the gift is more than GH¢20,000, the Minister may retain the gift during office but must declare it to Cabinet in the interest of transparency;

d. Upon leaving office, the Minister must relinquish to Cabinet any gift estimated to be worth over GH¢20,000, unless the Minister obtains the express permission of the President to retain it,” part of the code reads.

Section 1.5.13 of the Code of Conduct, which is titled “Hampers,” also bars public officials from giving out gifts using government funds, including internally generated funds.

“For government entities that must distribute hampers as part of their corporate commercial policy, express written permission for the budgeted expenditure must be received from the Office of the Chief of Staff,” it adds.

From the face of the regulations of the 2025 Code of Conduct, Sammy Gyamfi may be in the league of ‘having done no wrong.’

From the analysis, he has not received any gift in the line of his duties as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board, and which he has refused to disclose to the Secretary of Cabinet, nor has it been proven that the dollars he gave to Agradaa were state funds or part of the internally generated funds of the board.

But why has his action caused the government discontent, with many calling for his head?

What the legal experts have said

Even though Sammy Gyamfi’s actions appear not to have violated any of the regulations stated in the 2025 Code of Conduct, a number of legal experts, including Zakaria Tanko, lawyer and senior lecturer at UNIMAC-GIJ, have said that his action was wrong.

He said that even though the acting CEO’s action might not directly violate any listed regulation of the 2025 Code of Conduct, his action violates the principle behind it.

He added that it would be wrong to say that Sammy Gyamfi has done nothing wrong without looking at the entire purpose for the establishment of the Code of Conduct.

“The preamble to the Code of Conduct, the president gave in his message… says, ‘This Code of Conduct clearly states my expectation of a government of integrity, honesty, impartiality, respect, decency, incorruptibility, competency, professionalism.’

“… this is where it is very crucial ‘and standards of conduct that can withstand the closest public scrutiny.’ This is very crucial. Sometimes, what you are doing might ordinarily not be anything, but what will the ordinary person say if he is asked a question (about this)?” he said.

Zakaria Tanko also explained that even though the Code of Conduct does not categorically state that the giving of gifts by public officials is wrong, it is implied.

“It is implied. If you are giving, it takes a giver for somebody to receive. And even in the Criminal Code, the giver and the taker are all culpable,” he said.

Others have also argued that the action of Sammy Gyamfi goes contrary to President John Dramani Mahama’s caution to his appointees to avoid the public display of opulence and must be punished.

“The hallmark of this government will be modesty and respect for the Ghanaian people. Resources that you’ll be working with belong to the Ghanaian people who put us in office. Those resources are not to be wasted on opulence and extravagance. Also, all traces of affluence and lavish lifestyle are to be avoided,” President Mahama is quoted to have said.

For many others, Sammy Gyamfi being caught in public dishing out quite a huge amount of dollars does no good to President Mahama’s objective of a government with no trace of affluence and lavish lifestyle.

Watch as Bukom Banku ‘schools’ Sammy Gyamfi on how to present ‘money’ gifts in public

Bukom Banku (in black attire) demonstrated how to gift money in public discreetly Bukom Banku (in black attire) demonstrated how to gift money in public discreetly

Veteran Ghanaian boxer Bukom Banku has advised the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, to be discreet when giving out gifts to people in public.

In a video that has gone viral on X, Banku demonstrated that it is advisable to turn one’s back and give the gift to someone without the public spotting the exact gift, rather than handing it over to the person directly in the eyes of everyone.

The former boxer stated that making such a prestigious gift known in public triggers unwarranted criticisms and attacks.

“Gyamfi, you’re a graduate and people respect you a lot but this time Ghanaian politics is dirty. If you’re giving money to someone, don’t count it and give it to the person directly.

“Instead, turn your back and use one hand to give it to the person discreetly so that nobody sees it. Otherwise, people will say negative things about you when they see it. Now you see the trouble you’ve caused?” he said in a viral video.

Banku also questioned why Gyamfi would gift Nana Agradaa who is a staunch critic of President John Dramani Mahama.

“Your apology letter to NDC has been accepted and don’t repeat it another time. Agradaa has been insulting Mahama,” he added.

Background

In a video that went viral on social media platform X, Gyamfi was seen standing beside his Range Rover, taking a photo with Nana Agradaa, who had her arm around him.

Agradaa was then heard making a comment to Sammy Gyamfi, prompting him to open the back door of the vehicle and count US dollar notes to give to her.

She demanded all the notes and grabbed them from his hands before walking away from the scene.

This sparked massive backlash on social media, with netizens calling on the government to take action against Sammy Gyamfi.

Journalist dies at 102 years

Veteran journalist John Jones Sserwanga during an interview at the Monitor Bureau office in Masaka Veteran journalist John Jones Sserwanga during an interview at the Monitor Bureau office in Masaka

Salongo John Jones Sserwanga, who is believed to be Uganda’s oldest journalist, has passed on at the age of 102.

Sserwanga died at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital on Saturday evening, where he had been admitted two weeks ago after complaining of poor health, according to Mr Jude Ssonko, a presenter at Masaka-based Radio Buddu, where the deceased had worked for 14 years hosting a Saturday evening show Ebirwaawo byerabirwa (about Uganda’s history ).

He said the old man lost his appetite one-and-a half months ago and could not eat well, which could have weakened his body.

“Mzee John Jones had a stomach complication and was not eating well, yet he had to undergo treatment, and given his advanced age, both could have conspired to take his life, but are still waiting for a post-mortem report,” he said in an interview on Sunday.

He said John Jones, as he is popularly known in Masaka, will be remembered for being a very intelligent man who, even after getting too old he could easily remember things that happened 50 years ago.

Despite his advanced age, John Jones has been walking on the streets of Masaka unaccompanied and could climb stairs to a storied building, including Buddu Plaza, the home of Radio Buddu.

Farish Magembe, the president of Greater Masaka Journalists Association, said Sserwanga has been a resourceful person to young journalists, and many could run to him for guidance.

“He has loved the profession to his last breath. Many journalists serve for a few years and quit, but Mzee John Jones has always been that symbol that one can be a Journalist for life and an inspiration to all of us. His passing is a big blow to our fraternity, and we will dearly miss him,” he said

Mr Michael J Ssali, a veteran journalist who worked with Sserwanga for three decades, eulogised him as a good storyteller and friend to many.

“He was my personal friend and a good storyteller. He loved journalism with passion, and always immaculately dressed in a suit, he would often tease me for not wearing a suit and neck tie as he did. He also had interesting stories about his days at Mengo when he was part of the Kabaka’s motorcade, riding a big black motorcycle beside Edward Mutesa II Rolls-Royce.

He took pride in having been fairly close to Ssekabaka Mutesa II. He was a very honest man and always reliable, especially about money matters,” he said

Daily Monitor last interviewed Sserwanga last November when he was speaking about his longtime friend Hussein Ssengendo, 99, a former magistrate.

A vigil is underway at his home in Kyawuunyi-Kanyogoga Ward, Masaka City, and burial will take place on Thursday at the family ancestral grounds in Kikungwe Village, Kimaanya-Kabonera Municipality.

Award-winning Ghanaian gospel musician, Empress Gifty, has publicly expressed her disappointment with pharmaceutical company Ernest Chemist for using images of her late mother in billboard advertisements without seeking her consent or following due process.

According to the singer, the company featured photos of her deceased mother on several promotional billboards without first engaging her or any member of her family for approval.

Adu-Boahene Bombshell Rattles National Security

0

Kwabena Adu-Boahene

A shocking revelation by former Director General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has sent tremors through the country’s security establishment, prompting an emergency meeting between past and present operatives to assess the potential fallout.

The storm follows disclosures and leaked documentation on both traditional and social media, which detailed internal operations, classified expenditures, and allegations of politically motivated prosecutions tied to the embattled Adu-Boahene.

At the heart of the controversy is a letter dated October 8, 2018, authored by the former National Security Coordinator, Joshua Kyeremeh. The document, on official National Security letterhead, authorised the opening of special operations accounts for the “Alpha Project” — a covert operation under the Integrated National Security Communications Enhancement Network.

The accounts were managed by BNC Communications Bureau, whose director and signatory was Kwabena Adu-Boahene, with assistance from his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng. The letter explicitly stated that operations from the account would be supervised and reported to the National Security Coordinator.

However, the matter escalated when state prosecutors alleged that Mr. Adu-Boahene and his wife diverted funds for personal gain — a claim he has flatly rejected.

In a confidential memorandum dated May 5, 2025, addressed to the current National Security Coordinator and other senior officials, Adu-Boahene insisted the transactions were legitimate, sanctioned by higher authority, and aimed at national security objectives.

He warned that ongoing legal proceedings risk exposing sensitive intelligence operations, naming several classified projects and disbursements totaling over GH¢49 million.

Among the flagged expenditures were “Tyros Scorpion & IECN projects”, with GH¢ 9.5 million for cyber and surveillance tech; Operation Conquered Fist: GH¢6.9 million for counter-terrorism; Operation Calm Life: GH¢ 3.7 million for anti-kidnapping and violent crime response; Election-related operations: GH¢7.2 million and GH¢6.7 million for polling logistics; Support for political communications systems: GH¢8.3 million, marked as “classified”; and Procurement of vehicles: Over GH¢5 million in 2024, allegedly allocated to aides of the president-elect for “national cohesion.”

In his correspondence, Mr. Adu-Boahene suggested that the Attorney General’s accusations ignore the operational context and national interest surrounding the disbursement of the funds.

He warned that the current legal and media pressure risks exposing sensitive state operations and potentially compromising national security.

The expenditures in question relate to activities that, he explained further, were authorised at the highest levels and geared toward securing national stability during sensitive periods, including the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

He expressed particular concern that naming individuals and disclosing transaction details could lead to the exposure of operatives, internal strategies, and politically neutral state interventions that were aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s democracy.

He also accused state actors of enlisting bloggers and social media influencers to conduct what he describes as a coordinated smear campaign against him and his family.

According to Adu-Boahene, such tactics are not only defamatory but dangerously erode public trust in Ghana’s intelligence infrastructure and set a dangerous precedent where political vendettas override national interest.

The public airing of these matters has alarmed many within and outside the government. Security analysts warn that prosecuting intelligence-linked matters in the public domain is fraught with risks, especially when the operations in question are classified and have direct implications for national peace and security.

Host of “Good Evening Ghana” show on Metro TV, Paul Adom-Otchere, said an intelligence source indicated that the current situation had “crossed a dangerous threshold,” prompting urgent deliberations among Ghana’s security leadership.

According to him, the source indicated that a closed-door meeting involving both former and current high-ranking security operatives is being planned to advise the Commander-in-Chief and possibly steer the issue away from open court into more discreet, institutional processes.

Mahama’s code of conduct silent on gift giving; Tamakloe pleads with Ghanaians over Agradaa saga

0

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has defended the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board Sammy Gyamfi over his interaction with evangelist Patricia Asiedu, popularly known as Agradaa, arguing that the President’s Code of Conduct does not prohibit the act of giving gifts.

Mr Tamakloe made the remarks during an interview on TV3 on Monday, May 12, 2025.

His comments followed public criticism after Mr Gyamfi was seen in a widely circulated video offering a gift to Agradaa at a social gathering.

The incident sparked debate on social media and raised questions about ethical conduct under President John Mahama’s government.

According to Mr Tamakloe, the Code of Conduct recently launched by President Mahama provides guidance on receiving gifts but makes no mention of giving.

“From the interaction in the video, it was Sammy who offered something. So, the issue of violating the Code, with respect, doesn’t arise because the Code is silent on giving,” he said.

While maintaining that no rule had been broken, Mr Tamakloe acknowledged that the incident had caused public unease.

He appealed to Ghanaians to forgive Mr Gyamfi, noting that he had issued an unqualified apology.

“We once again apologise for this indiscretion and hope it will not happen again. As young people, I ask that the good people of Ghana forgive us for this mistake. We will not justify it at all,” he stated.

Mr Tamakloe also revealed that the Chief of Staff had summoned Mr Gyamfi in connection with the matter.

He said he believed the apology, both to the public and to President Mahama, should help bring an end to the controversy.

“As appointees of President Mahama, we are judged by a very high standard. It requires us to be sensitive to our environment and the things happening around us,” he added.

He also noted that he treats the Code of Conduct as a personal guide and keeps a copy on his phone for reference.

Mr Tamakloe, who is also Mr Gyamfi’s lawyer, said the episode should serve as a reminder to young government officials to remain mindful of how their actions are perceived.

He added that appointees must show restraint and maturity in how they conduct themselves in public.

Ghana’s new identification authority board to focus on public trust, inclusive service delivery

0

The National Identification Authority of Ghana (NIA) has new appointees on its governing board with a call on them to enhance the delivery of digital identity services in the country.

A press release from the NIA notes that the Minister of Interior, Hon Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, officially commissioned the new board recently, urging members to display a high sense of devotion to service. They were called upon to “deepen oversight, strengthen public trust, and accelerate the delivery of secure and inclusive identity services.”

The minister praised the NIA for some of its recent achievements which are aimed at expanding the reach of the national digital ID and facilitate access to several public and private sector services. He said under the leadership of the acting NIA Executive Secretary, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, the authority has been able to decentralize ID registration services and expand premium services.

One other recent innovation by the NIA is the introduction of an online-only application system for national ID-related premium services, the minister mentioned.

Speaking on behalf of the appointees, the new Board Chairman Moses Afetsi Positive pledged to provide strategic leadership for the board in order to enhance the delivery of inclusive identification services to Ghanaians. He emphasized the importance of the national ID card, commonly known as the Ghana Card, saying it is a critical tool that enables citizens and aliens to access a wide range of government and private sector services in an easy and secure manner.

The government has tasked the new board members with ensuring that the NIA effectively works to implement its vision of providing legal and digital ID for all citizens of the West African country by 2030, in line with objectives of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 16.9 target.

As provided for by Ghana’s National Identification Act, 2009, the governing board of the NIA has several important roles which include policy direction and financial oversight, strategic leadership, appointment of executive management officials, approval of regulations and operational guidelines, data governance and security, and stakeholder engagement.

Why blame the deputies and spare the bosses?

Former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mark Okraku-Mantey Former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mark Okraku-Mantey

Former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mark Okraku-Mantey, has expressed concern over what he sees as a pattern of undue criticism directed at deputies while their superiors remain untouched.

In an interview on Joy FM, Okraku-Mantey questioned why, in certain conversations, attention and scrutiny was often focused on him, a deputy minister, instead of the substantive minister who holds the highest responsibility.

“If you mean well, why do you leave the main minister free and touch on the deputy?” he asked.

He noted that this unusual focus became more apparent during his time in office, suggesting that both he and the former vice president Mahamudu Bawumia were, in a way, singled out for criticism or political targeting, despite being second-in-command in their respective roles.

“It is only in my time that the deputy, not only I, but I and Dr. Bawumia, we are the only people in the NPP government, the Vice President and a deputy minister, who were seen to be treated as though we were the ones supposed to lead,” he said.

Okraku-Mantey admitted he still does not fully understand what led to such treatment but suggested that perhaps they were too visible, or may have overshadowed the ministers they worked under.

“I don’t know what we did wrong, but maybe we also showed too many faces. We covered the main people somehow,” he added.

Mahama and Naana Jane’s absence from Ghana is breach of the constitution

0

Captain Nkrabea Effah Darteh (RTD) is a former Member of Parliament for Berekum, Captain Nkrabea Effah Darteh (RTD) is a former Member of Parliament for Berekum,

A former Member of Parliament for Berekum, Captain Nkrabea Effah Darteh (RTD), has raised concerns over what he describes as a serious constitutional breach involving President John Dramani Mahama and his Vice President, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

He claims that their joint absence from the country on Mother’s Day without properly handing over authority to the Speaker of Parliament violates Ghana’s constitution.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday, May 12, 2025, Effah Darteh argued that the absence of the country’s top two leaders should have been accompanied by a formal process to empower the Speaker to act in their stead.

He stressed that without such a measure, governance is left in a constitutional vacuum.

“Honestly and sincerely, to be faithful to the law, if the president is not available and the vice president is also not around, and if the Chief Justice did not officially swear the Speaker in to act in their absence, then there is a very serious breach of the constitution,” he stated.

Effah Darte emphasised the importance of adhering strictly to the constitution to maintain order and continuity in governance.

He stressed that such oversight could set a dangerous precedent for future administrations.

The former MP insisted that the nation deserves clarity on who was in charge during the absence of both the president and his vice.

According to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, Article 60(11) stipulates that the Speaker of Parliament shall act as President when both the President and Vice President are unable to perform their duties. However, this must follow a formal swearing-in by the Chief Justice.

US and China agree to slash tariffs for 90 days

0

The US and China have agreed a deal that will significantly cut the import tariffs they have imposed on each other, in a major de-escalation of their trade war.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said both countries would lower their reciprocal tariffs by 115% for 90 days.

The announcement came after the two countries held talks in Switzerland, the first between the two countries since US President Donald Trump had levied steep tariffs on Chinese imports last month.

Shares jumped on news of the deal. Last month, the imposition of the tariffs had caused turmoil in financial markets and sparked fears of a global recession.

The trade war between China and the US intensified last month after President Trump announced a universal baseline tariff on all imports to the US, on what he called “Liberation Day”.

Around 60 trading partners, which the White House described as the “worst offenders”, were subjected to higher rates than others, and this included China.

China retaliated with tariffs of its own, and this ratcheting up of levies ultimately led to the US imposing a 145% tariff on Chinese imports, while Beijing had a 125% levy on some US goods.

Liberation Day tariffs for 90 days and cancelled other retaliatory tariffs.

This will cut US tariffs on Chinese imports to 30%, while Chinese tariffs on US imports will be cut to 10%. The pause will begin on 14 May.

The US measures still include an extra 20% component aimed at putting pressure on Beijing to do more to curb the illegal trade in fentanyl, a powerful opioid drug.

The huge tariffs imposed had raised the prospect of trade between the two countries slumping, with US ports reporting a sharp drop in the number of ships scheduled to arrive from China.

Meanwhile Beijing has become increasingly concerned about the impact the tariffs could have on its economy. Factory output has already slowed and there are reports some firms were having to lay off workers as production lines of goods bound for the US began to grind to a halt.

Announcing the agreement, Bessent said: “The consensus from both delegations this weekend is neither side wants a decoupling.

“What had occurred with these very high tariffs was the equivalent of an embargo, and neither side wants that.

“We do want trade, we want more balanced trade, and I think that both sides are committed to achieving that.”

China’s commerce ministry said the agreement reached with the US was an important step to “resolve differences” and “lay the foundation to bridge differences and deepen co-operation”.

News of the agreement boosted stock markets, with Hong Kong’s benchmark Hang Seng Index ending the day up 3%. China’s Shanghai Composite Index had closed before details of the deal came out, and ended 0.8% higher.

European stocks rose and early indications were that the main US stock markets will open up by 2-3%.

The deal has boosted shares in shipping companies, with Denmark’s Maersk up more than 12% and Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd jumping 14%.

Maersk told the BBC the US-China agreement was “a step in the right direction”.

“We hope it can lay the foundation for the parties to also reach a permanent deal that can create the long-term predictability our customers need.”

However, the gold price – which has benefited from its safe-haven status in recent weeks given the disruption caused by the tariffs – fell 3% to $3,224.34 an ounce.

In a joint statement, both countries said they would establish “a mechanism to continue discussions about economic and trade relations”, led by Scott Bessent and China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng.

It added that both countries believe that “continued discussions have the potential to address the concerns of each side in their economic and trade relationship”.

President Trump has long been unhappy with the fact that the US buys substantially more goods from China than it sells it.

Other concerns include a lack of protection for the intellectual property rights of American companies in China including the forced transfer of technology.

There’s also unhappiness about alleged Chinese government subsidies that give their companies an unfair advantage – something Beijing says Washington also does.

When President Trump first announced the tariffs, he argued they would boost American manufacturing and protect jobs.

But many economists argued they would hit growth in the global economy, and make many products more expensive for US consumers.

Last month, the International Monetary Fund cut its growth forecast for the global economy for this year to 2.8% from 3.3%, arguing that the uncertainty caused by the tariffs would hit supply chains and lead to firms either pausing or cutting investment.

Ghanaian defender, Dacosta Antwi, has been named in the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group Stage Best XI, following an outstanding series of performances that helped the Black Satellites top their group with authority in Egypt 2025.

Antwi, a commanding presence at the heart of Ghana’s defence, played every single minute of the group stage campaign, anchoring a backline that proved to be one of the tournament’s most solid units.

With two clean sheets in three matches and just a single goal conceded, his contributions were central to Ghana’s defensive resilience.

Ghana wrapped up the group stage unbeaten, amassing 7 points from three matches to finish first in their group.

Antwi’s leadership and composure under pressure were critical in guiding the team through tightly contested fixtures.

His standout performances did not go unnoticed, as CAF rewarded him with a place in the tournament’s Best XI for the group stage.

He is joined in the elite selection by some of the continent’s brightest young talents, including Levison Banda, Daniel Bameyi, and Momoh Kamara.

Antwi’s inclusion is not only a personal accolade but also a statement of Ghana’s defensive strength heading into the knockout stages.

With performances like his, the Black Satellites are poised to make a deep run in the competition.

She explain say dis binding process fit make am dey harder for your body to absorb di iron – as minerals need to pass through di intestinal cells to enta di bloodstream. “If e dey tie to polyphenols, dey simply pass through your body and you poo-poo am.”

Dis dey especially important for iron, particularly di type wey dey inside plant-based foods, wey dem dey call’non-heme iron’. Non-heme iron from foods like fruit and vegetables dey harder for di bod to absorb.

Polyphenols inside coffee – especially chlorogenic acid – fit attach to dis type of iron, stop am make e no absorb into bloodstream properly. Sake of result say, di iron remain tied to dis compounds as e dey move through di digestive system. You go eventually poo-poo am instead make di body use am.

All dis means say pipo wit iron-deficiency anaemia suppose dey cautious about drinking coffee wey too close to iron-rich meals.

“E fit dey best to enjoy your coffee at least one hour bifor or some hours afta you eat iron-rich foods so dem no go mix inside your belle,” Alex Ruani tok.

Women wey dey menstruate and di ones wey get belle often dey fall into dis category of pipo wey need to keep eye on dia iron levels. Dem typically need more iron and dey more prone to develop iron-deficiency anaemia so dem need to keep eyes on dia coffee intake.

Calcium

Calcium dey good for bone health, yet 9% of 16–49 year-olds in di UK dey consume less dan di Lowest Reference Nutrient Intake (LRNI) of calcium through dia food. Dis deficit dey put dem at risk of weak bones later in life.

Our kidneys dey remove waste and extra water from di blood (as urine) and help keep chemicals (like sodium, potassium, and calcium) balanced inside body. E dey also dey make hormones.

Studies suggest say caffeine fit make am harder for your body to hang on to calcium e go disturb how e dey processed in your kidneys and absorbed in di intestines.

Again, dis effects dey minimal and more important for pipo wey already dey eat low calcium diet or dey at higher risk for bone-related health issues.

“One popular study wey dem publish inside journal, Osteoporosis International, proposes say caffeine fit contribute to bone loss as e dey interfere wit bone metabolism,” Ruani tok. “But more studies dey needed to determine di true impact of caffeine on osteoporosis risk.”

Calcium fit dey stored by di body, so you no need to consume di recommended amount daily – but over di period of months adults weydey di age of 19-64 suppose average out around 700mg of calcium a day.

E also worth to get am for mind say caffeine get diuretic effect i.e. e dey increase how often you need to urinate.

“Dis fit lead to di loss of water-soluble vitamins (like some B vitamins) and minerals (like iron and calcium), as excretion dey play key role to regulate dia levels in di body,” Ho add.

B Vitamins

“Sake of coffee influence on kidney function and nutrient metabolism, to drink large amounts of coffee (like four cups a day or more), fit make you poo-poo too much and wit dat, di loss of water-soluble vitamins, including B vitamins,” Ruani explain.

B vitamins dey dissolve in water, so dem no dey stored in di body. Instead, any excess go comot for body through urine.

Probiotics

Probiotics na live bacteria and yeasts wey dey promoted to get various health benefits.

Dem fit dey helpful to restore di natural balance of bacteria inside your gut in some cases according to di NHS site but na small evidence dey to support many health claims about dem.

However, if you wan try probiotic supplements or probiotic-rich foods like yogurt and kimchi, e dey best to avoid to dey chop dem dem alongside hot drinks like coffee.

“Live bacteria wey dey inside probiotics dey highly sensitive to heat, and exposure to high temperatures – like di heat in coffee – fit reduce dia survival rate in di gastrointestinal tract, make dem less effective,” Ruani tok.

Sometimes e dey prescribed by doctors to help ease diarrhoea wey antibiotic medication cause, to get di maximum benefit wait 30-60 minutes bifor you take probiotic if you don take a cup of coffee.

E worth to swap out coffee for tea?

If you dey consider to switch to tea, e dey important to sabi say some of di same concerns apply to tea too.

“In fact, di polyphenols wey dey inside tea fit get similar effect on nutrient bioavailability, so e dey important to pay attention to di timing of your tea consumption if you dey worry about nutrient absorption,” Ho warn.

Pregnant women often dey fall in to dis category of pipo wey need to keep eye on dia iron levels wey fit also dey affected by dia coffee intake
