The ‘sin’ Sammy Gyamfi committed that might cost him his job

0

Acting Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, appears to have his job on the line following a viral video of him giving an undisclosed amount of United States (US) dollars to Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist.

Calls for President John Dramani Mahama to take action against Sammy Gyamfi, who is also the National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have been followed by a summons of the CEO by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah.

According to reports, the Chief of Staff wants the Goldbod CEO to explain the circumstances surrounding his action, which has drawn disenchantment against the government and raised concerns about the ethical conduct of public officials.

But has Sammy Gyamfi, who would be leading what some have described as the biggest state-owned agency of the current government, violated the Code of Conduct which was launched literally days ago by President John Mahama?

What the Code of Conduct says about giving a gift:

Sammy Gyamfi, in an apology he posted on social media, explained that he was only helping a person in need, as he has been doing.

Sections of the Code of Conduct perhaps touch on public officers receiving gifts and giving out hampers, including gifts.

Section 1.5.12 of the Code of Conduct, which touches on “Gifts,” bars public officers from soliciting “gifts in cash or kind” in the line of their duties. It, however, states that the “exchange of gifts” is permissible because “refusing such a gift may cause offence.”

The code, however, states that gifts received by public officers must be submitted to the Secretary to the Cabinet.

“a. The Minister must submit any gift received, in Ghana or from overseas, to the Secretary to Cabinet for appropriate display;

b. Where the Minister wishes to retain gifts received, he may do so only if the estimated value does not exceed GH¢20,000;

c. Where the estimated value of the gift is more than GH¢20,000, the Minister may retain the gift during office but must declare it to Cabinet in the interest of transparency;

d. Upon leaving office, the Minister must relinquish to Cabinet any gift estimated to be worth over GH¢20,000, unless the Minister obtains the express permission of the President to retain it,” part of the code reads.

Section 1.5.13 of the Code of Conduct, which is titled “Hampers,” also bars public officials from giving out gifts using government funds, including internally generated funds.

“For government entities that must distribute hampers as part of their corporate commercial policy, express written permission for the budgeted expenditure must be received from the Office of the Chief of Staff,” it adds.

From the face of the regulations of the 2025 Code of Conduct, Sammy Gyamfi may be in the league of ‘having done no wrong.’

From the analysis, he has not received any gift in the line of his duties as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board, and which he has refused to disclose to the Secretary of Cabinet, nor has it been proven that the dollars he gave to Agradaa were state funds or part of the internally generated funds of the board.

But why has his action caused the government discontent, with many calling for his head?

What the legal experts have said

Even though Sammy Gyamfi’s actions appear not to have violated any of the regulations stated in the 2025 Code of Conduct, a number of legal experts, including Zakaria Tanko, lawyer and senior lecturer at UNIMAC-GIJ, have said that his action was wrong.

He said that even though the acting CEO’s action might not directly violate any listed regulation of the 2025 Code of Conduct, his action violates the principle behind it.

He added that it would be wrong to say that Sammy Gyamfi has done nothing wrong without looking at the entire purpose for the establishment of the Code of Conduct.

“The preamble to the Code of Conduct, the president gave in his message… says, ‘This Code of Conduct clearly states my expectation of a government of integrity, honesty, impartiality, respect, decency, incorruptibility, competency, professionalism.’

“… this is where it is very crucial ‘and standards of conduct that can withstand the closest public scrutiny.’ This is very crucial. Sometimes, what you are doing might ordinarily not be anything, but what will the ordinary person say if he is asked a question (about this)?” he said.

Zakaria Tanko also explained that even though the Code of Conduct does not categorically state that the giving of gifts by public officials is wrong, it is implied.

“It is implied. If you are giving, it takes a giver for somebody to receive. And even in the Criminal Code, the giver and the taker are all culpable,” he said.

Others have also argued that the action of Sammy Gyamfi goes contrary to President John Dramani Mahama’s caution to his appointees to avoid the public display of opulence and must be punished.

“The hallmark of this government will be modesty and respect for the Ghanaian people. Resources that you’ll be working with belong to the Ghanaian people who put us in office. Those resources are not to be wasted on opulence and extravagance. Also, all traces of affluence and lavish lifestyle are to be avoided,” President Mahama is quoted to have said.

For many others, Sammy Gyamfi being caught in public dishing out quite a huge amount of dollars does no good to President Mahama’s objective of a government with no trace of affluence and lavish lifestyle.

Watch as Bukom Banku ‘schools’ Sammy Gyamfi on how to present ‘money’ gifts in public

Bukom Banku (in black attire) demonstrated how to gift money in public discreetly Bukom Banku (in black attire) demonstrated how to gift money in public discreetly

Veteran Ghanaian boxer Bukom Banku has advised the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, to be discreet when giving out gifts to people in public.

In a video that has gone viral on X, Banku demonstrated that it is advisable to turn one’s back and give the gift to someone without the public spotting the exact gift, rather than handing it over to the person directly in the eyes of everyone.

The former boxer stated that making such a prestigious gift known in public triggers unwarranted criticisms and attacks.

“Gyamfi, you’re a graduate and people respect you a lot but this time Ghanaian politics is dirty. If you’re giving money to someone, don’t count it and give it to the person directly.

“Instead, turn your back and use one hand to give it to the person discreetly so that nobody sees it. Otherwise, people will say negative things about you when they see it. Now you see the trouble you’ve caused?” he said in a viral video.

Banku also questioned why Gyamfi would gift Nana Agradaa who is a staunch critic of President John Dramani Mahama.

“Your apology letter to NDC has been accepted and don’t repeat it another time. Agradaa has been insulting Mahama,” he added.

Background

In a video that went viral on social media platform X, Gyamfi was seen standing beside his Range Rover, taking a photo with Nana Agradaa, who had her arm around him.

Agradaa was then heard making a comment to Sammy Gyamfi, prompting him to open the back door of the vehicle and count US dollar notes to give to her.

She demanded all the notes and grabbed them from his hands before walking away from the scene.

This sparked massive backlash on social media, with netizens calling on the government to take action against Sammy Gyamfi.

Journalist dies at 102 years

Veteran journalist John Jones Sserwanga during an interview at the Monitor Bureau office in Masaka Veteran journalist John Jones Sserwanga during an interview at the Monitor Bureau office in Masaka

Salongo John Jones Sserwanga, who is believed to be Uganda’s oldest journalist, has passed on at the age of 102.

Sserwanga died at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital on Saturday evening, where he had been admitted two weeks ago after complaining of poor health, according to Mr Jude Ssonko, a presenter at Masaka-based Radio Buddu, where the deceased had worked for 14 years hosting a Saturday evening show Ebirwaawo byerabirwa (about Uganda’s history ).

He said the old man lost his appetite one-and-a half months ago and could not eat well, which could have weakened his body.

“Mzee John Jones had a stomach complication and was not eating well, yet he had to undergo treatment, and given his advanced age, both could have conspired to take his life, but are still waiting for a post-mortem report,” he said in an interview on Sunday.

He said John Jones, as he is popularly known in Masaka, will be remembered for being a very intelligent man who, even after getting too old he could easily remember things that happened 50 years ago.

Despite his advanced age, John Jones has been walking on the streets of Masaka unaccompanied and could climb stairs to a storied building, including Buddu Plaza, the home of Radio Buddu.

Farish Magembe, the president of Greater Masaka Journalists Association, said Sserwanga has been a resourceful person to young journalists, and many could run to him for guidance.

“He has loved the profession to his last breath. Many journalists serve for a few years and quit, but Mzee John Jones has always been that symbol that one can be a Journalist for life and an inspiration to all of us. His passing is a big blow to our fraternity, and we will dearly miss him,” he said

Mr Michael J Ssali, a veteran journalist who worked with Sserwanga for three decades, eulogised him as a good storyteller and friend to many.

“He was my personal friend and a good storyteller. He loved journalism with passion, and always immaculately dressed in a suit, he would often tease me for not wearing a suit and neck tie as he did. He also had interesting stories about his days at Mengo when he was part of the Kabaka’s motorcade, riding a big black motorcycle beside Edward Mutesa II Rolls-Royce.

He took pride in having been fairly close to Ssekabaka Mutesa II. He was a very honest man and always reliable, especially about money matters,” he said

Daily Monitor last interviewed Sserwanga last November when he was speaking about his longtime friend Hussein Ssengendo, 99, a former magistrate.

A vigil is underway at his home in Kyawuunyi-Kanyogoga Ward, Masaka City, and burial will take place on Thursday at the family ancestral grounds in Kikungwe Village, Kimaanya-Kabonera Municipality.

Adu-Boahene Bombshell Rattles National Security

0

Kwabena Adu-Boahene

A shocking revelation by former Director General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has sent tremors through the country’s security establishment, prompting an emergency meeting between past and present operatives to assess the potential fallout.

The storm follows disclosures and leaked documentation on both traditional and social media, which detailed internal operations, classified expenditures, and allegations of politically motivated prosecutions tied to the embattled Adu-Boahene.

At the heart of the controversy is a letter dated October 8, 2018, authored by the former National Security Coordinator, Joshua Kyeremeh. The document, on official National Security letterhead, authorised the opening of special operations accounts for the “Alpha Project” — a covert operation under the Integrated National Security Communications Enhancement Network.

The accounts were managed by BNC Communications Bureau, whose director and signatory was Kwabena Adu-Boahene, with assistance from his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng. The letter explicitly stated that operations from the account would be supervised and reported to the National Security Coordinator.

However, the matter escalated when state prosecutors alleged that Mr. Adu-Boahene and his wife diverted funds for personal gain — a claim he has flatly rejected.

In a confidential memorandum dated May 5, 2025, addressed to the current National Security Coordinator and other senior officials, Adu-Boahene insisted the transactions were legitimate, sanctioned by higher authority, and aimed at national security objectives.

He warned that ongoing legal proceedings risk exposing sensitive intelligence operations, naming several classified projects and disbursements totaling over GH¢49 million.

Among the flagged expenditures were “Tyros Scorpion & IECN projects”, with GH¢ 9.5 million for cyber and surveillance tech; Operation Conquered Fist: GH¢6.9 million for counter-terrorism; Operation Calm Life: GH¢ 3.7 million for anti-kidnapping and violent crime response; Election-related operations: GH¢7.2 million and GH¢6.7 million for polling logistics; Support for political communications systems: GH¢8.3 million, marked as “classified”; and Procurement of vehicles: Over GH¢5 million in 2024, allegedly allocated to aides of the president-elect for “national cohesion.”

In his correspondence, Mr. Adu-Boahene suggested that the Attorney General’s accusations ignore the operational context and national interest surrounding the disbursement of the funds.

He warned that the current legal and media pressure risks exposing sensitive state operations and potentially compromising national security.

The expenditures in question relate to activities that, he explained further, were authorised at the highest levels and geared toward securing national stability during sensitive periods, including the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

He expressed particular concern that naming individuals and disclosing transaction details could lead to the exposure of operatives, internal strategies, and politically neutral state interventions that were aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s democracy.

He also accused state actors of enlisting bloggers and social media influencers to conduct what he describes as a coordinated smear campaign against him and his family.

According to Adu-Boahene, such tactics are not only defamatory but dangerously erode public trust in Ghana’s intelligence infrastructure and set a dangerous precedent where political vendettas override national interest.

The public airing of these matters has alarmed many within and outside the government. Security analysts warn that prosecuting intelligence-linked matters in the public domain is fraught with risks, especially when the operations in question are classified and have direct implications for national peace and security.

Host of “Good Evening Ghana” show on Metro TV, Paul Adom-Otchere, said an intelligence source indicated that the current situation had “crossed a dangerous threshold,” prompting urgent deliberations among Ghana’s security leadership.

According to him, the source indicated that a closed-door meeting involving both former and current high-ranking security operatives is being planned to advise the Commander-in-Chief and possibly steer the issue away from open court into more discreet, institutional processes.

Mahama’s code of conduct silent on gift giving; Tamakloe pleads with Ghanaians over Agradaa saga

0

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has defended the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board Sammy Gyamfi over his interaction with evangelist Patricia Asiedu, popularly known as Agradaa, arguing that the President’s Code of Conduct does not prohibit the act of giving gifts.

Mr Tamakloe made the remarks during an interview on TV3 on Monday, May 12, 2025.

His comments followed public criticism after Mr Gyamfi was seen in a widely circulated video offering a gift to Agradaa at a social gathering.

The incident sparked debate on social media and raised questions about ethical conduct under President John Mahama’s government.

According to Mr Tamakloe, the Code of Conduct recently launched by President Mahama provides guidance on receiving gifts but makes no mention of giving.

“From the interaction in the video, it was Sammy who offered something. So, the issue of violating the Code, with respect, doesn’t arise because the Code is silent on giving,” he said.

While maintaining that no rule had been broken, Mr Tamakloe acknowledged that the incident had caused public unease.

He appealed to Ghanaians to forgive Mr Gyamfi, noting that he had issued an unqualified apology.

“We once again apologise for this indiscretion and hope it will not happen again. As young people, I ask that the good people of Ghana forgive us for this mistake. We will not justify it at all,” he stated.

Mr Tamakloe also revealed that the Chief of Staff had summoned Mr Gyamfi in connection with the matter.

He said he believed the apology, both to the public and to President Mahama, should help bring an end to the controversy.

“As appointees of President Mahama, we are judged by a very high standard. It requires us to be sensitive to our environment and the things happening around us,” he added.

He also noted that he treats the Code of Conduct as a personal guide and keeps a copy on his phone for reference.

Mr Tamakloe, who is also Mr Gyamfi’s lawyer, said the episode should serve as a reminder to young government officials to remain mindful of how their actions are perceived.

He added that appointees must show restraint and maturity in how they conduct themselves in public.

Ghana’s new identification authority board to focus on public trust, inclusive service delivery

0

The National Identification Authority of Ghana (NIA) has new appointees on its governing board with a call on them to enhance the delivery of digital identity services in the country.

A press release from the NIA notes that the Minister of Interior, Hon Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, officially commissioned the new board recently, urging members to display a high sense of devotion to service. They were called upon to “deepen oversight, strengthen public trust, and accelerate the delivery of secure and inclusive identity services.”

The minister praised the NIA for some of its recent achievements which are aimed at expanding the reach of the national digital ID and facilitate access to several public and private sector services. He said under the leadership of the acting NIA Executive Secretary, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, the authority has been able to decentralize ID registration services and expand premium services.

One other recent innovation by the NIA is the introduction of an online-only application system for national ID-related premium services, the minister mentioned.

Speaking on behalf of the appointees, the new Board Chairman Moses Afetsi Positive pledged to provide strategic leadership for the board in order to enhance the delivery of inclusive identification services to Ghanaians. He emphasized the importance of the national ID card, commonly known as the Ghana Card, saying it is a critical tool that enables citizens and aliens to access a wide range of government and private sector services in an easy and secure manner.

The government has tasked the new board members with ensuring that the NIA effectively works to implement its vision of providing legal and digital ID for all citizens of the West African country by 2030, in line with objectives of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 16.9 target.

As provided for by Ghana’s National Identification Act, 2009, the governing board of the NIA has several important roles which include policy direction and financial oversight, strategic leadership, appointment of executive management officials, approval of regulations and operational guidelines, data governance and security, and stakeholder engagement.

Why blame the deputies and spare the bosses?

Former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mark Okraku-Mantey Former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mark Okraku-Mantey

Former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mark Okraku-Mantey, has expressed concern over what he sees as a pattern of undue criticism directed at deputies while their superiors remain untouched.

In an interview on Joy FM, Okraku-Mantey questioned why, in certain conversations, attention and scrutiny was often focused on him, a deputy minister, instead of the substantive minister who holds the highest responsibility.

“If you mean well, why do you leave the main minister free and touch on the deputy?” he asked.

He noted that this unusual focus became more apparent during his time in office, suggesting that both he and the former vice president Mahamudu Bawumia were, in a way, singled out for criticism or political targeting, despite being second-in-command in their respective roles.

“It is only in my time that the deputy, not only I, but I and Dr. Bawumia, we are the only people in the NPP government, the Vice President and a deputy minister, who were seen to be treated as though we were the ones supposed to lead,” he said.

Okraku-Mantey admitted he still does not fully understand what led to such treatment but suggested that perhaps they were too visible, or may have overshadowed the ministers they worked under.

“I don’t know what we did wrong, but maybe we also showed too many faces. We covered the main people somehow,” he added.

Mahama and Naana Jane’s absence from Ghana is breach of the constitution

0

Captain Nkrabea Effah Darteh (RTD) is a former Member of Parliament for Berekum, Captain Nkrabea Effah Darteh (RTD) is a former Member of Parliament for Berekum,

A former Member of Parliament for Berekum, Captain Nkrabea Effah Darteh (RTD), has raised concerns over what he describes as a serious constitutional breach involving President John Dramani Mahama and his Vice President, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

He claims that their joint absence from the country on Mother’s Day without properly handing over authority to the Speaker of Parliament violates Ghana’s constitution.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday, May 12, 2025, Effah Darteh argued that the absence of the country’s top two leaders should have been accompanied by a formal process to empower the Speaker to act in their stead.

He stressed that without such a measure, governance is left in a constitutional vacuum.

“Honestly and sincerely, to be faithful to the law, if the president is not available and the vice president is also not around, and if the Chief Justice did not officially swear the Speaker in to act in their absence, then there is a very serious breach of the constitution,” he stated.

Effah Darte emphasised the importance of adhering strictly to the constitution to maintain order and continuity in governance.

He stressed that such oversight could set a dangerous precedent for future administrations.

The former MP insisted that the nation deserves clarity on who was in charge during the absence of both the president and his vice.

According to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, Article 60(11) stipulates that the Speaker of Parliament shall act as President when both the President and Vice President are unable to perform their duties. However, this must follow a formal swearing-in by the Chief Justice.

US and China agree to slash tariffs for 90 days

0

The US and China have agreed a deal that will significantly cut the import tariffs they have imposed on each other, in a major de-escalation of their trade war.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said both countries would lower their reciprocal tariffs by 115% for 90 days.

The announcement came after the two countries held talks in Switzerland, the first between the two countries since US President Donald Trump had levied steep tariffs on Chinese imports last month.

Shares jumped on news of the deal. Last month, the imposition of the tariffs had caused turmoil in financial markets and sparked fears of a global recession.

The trade war between China and the US intensified last month after President Trump announced a universal baseline tariff on all imports to the US, on what he called “Liberation Day”.

Around 60 trading partners, which the White House described as the “worst offenders”, were subjected to higher rates than others, and this included China.

China retaliated with tariffs of its own, and this ratcheting up of levies ultimately led to the US imposing a 145% tariff on Chinese imports, while Beijing had a 125% levy on some US goods.

Liberation Day tariffs for 90 days and cancelled other retaliatory tariffs.

This will cut US tariffs on Chinese imports to 30%, while Chinese tariffs on US imports will be cut to 10%. The pause will begin on 14 May.

The US measures still include an extra 20% component aimed at putting pressure on Beijing to do more to curb the illegal trade in fentanyl, a powerful opioid drug.

The huge tariffs imposed had raised the prospect of trade between the two countries slumping, with US ports reporting a sharp drop in the number of ships scheduled to arrive from China.

Meanwhile Beijing has become increasingly concerned about the impact the tariffs could have on its economy. Factory output has already slowed and there are reports some firms were having to lay off workers as production lines of goods bound for the US began to grind to a halt.

Announcing the agreement, Bessent said: “The consensus from both delegations this weekend is neither side wants a decoupling.

“What had occurred with these very high tariffs was the equivalent of an embargo, and neither side wants that.

“We do want trade, we want more balanced trade, and I think that both sides are committed to achieving that.”

China’s commerce ministry said the agreement reached with the US was an important step to “resolve differences” and “lay the foundation to bridge differences and deepen co-operation”.

News of the agreement boosted stock markets, with Hong Kong’s benchmark Hang Seng Index ending the day up 3%. China’s Shanghai Composite Index had closed before details of the deal came out, and ended 0.8% higher.

European stocks rose and early indications were that the main US stock markets will open up by 2-3%.

The deal has boosted shares in shipping companies, with Denmark’s Maersk up more than 12% and Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd jumping 14%.

Maersk told the BBC the US-China agreement was “a step in the right direction”.

“We hope it can lay the foundation for the parties to also reach a permanent deal that can create the long-term predictability our customers need.”

However, the gold price – which has benefited from its safe-haven status in recent weeks given the disruption caused by the tariffs – fell 3% to $3,224.34 an ounce.

In a joint statement, both countries said they would establish “a mechanism to continue discussions about economic and trade relations”, led by Scott Bessent and China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng.

It added that both countries believe that “continued discussions have the potential to address the concerns of each side in their economic and trade relationship”.

President Trump has long been unhappy with the fact that the US buys substantially more goods from China than it sells it.

Other concerns include a lack of protection for the intellectual property rights of American companies in China including the forced transfer of technology.

There’s also unhappiness about alleged Chinese government subsidies that give their companies an unfair advantage – something Beijing says Washington also does.

When President Trump first announced the tariffs, he argued they would boost American manufacturing and protect jobs.

But many economists argued they would hit growth in the global economy, and make many products more expensive for US consumers.

Last month, the International Monetary Fund cut its growth forecast for the global economy for this year to 2.8% from 3.3%, arguing that the uncertainty caused by the tariffs would hit supply chains and lead to firms either pausing or cutting investment.

Ghanaian defender, Dacosta Antwi, has been named in the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group Stage Best XI, following an outstanding series of performances that helped the Black Satellites top their group with authority in Egypt 2025.

Antwi, a commanding presence at the heart of Ghana’s defence, played every single minute of the group stage campaign, anchoring a backline that proved to be one of the tournament’s most solid units.

With two clean sheets in three matches and just a single goal conceded, his contributions were central to Ghana’s defensive resilience.

Ghana wrapped up the group stage unbeaten, amassing 7 points from three matches to finish first in their group.

Antwi’s leadership and composure under pressure were critical in guiding the team through tightly contested fixtures.

His standout performances did not go unnoticed, as CAF rewarded him with a place in the tournament’s Best XI for the group stage.

He is joined in the elite selection by some of the continent’s brightest young talents, including Levison Banda, Daniel Bameyi, and Momoh Kamara.

Antwi’s inclusion is not only a personal accolade but also a statement of Ghana’s defensive strength heading into the knockout stages.

With performances like his, the Black Satellites are poised to make a deep run in the competition.

E dey bad for you to drink coffee wen you dey chop?

0

If dem don ever warn you say to dey drink coffee wen you dey chop, or straight afta am, fit be bad idea, some kain truth dey inside

More dan 1000 chemical compounds dey inside coffee, and one handful, like caffeine, polyphenols, and tannins, fit interfere wit how you absorb nutrients from your food.

Di good news be say for most pipo, dis effects dey small — e no dey serious enof to cause deficiencies.

Nutrients na substances wey dem dey find inside our food and drink wey dey carry out certain vital jobs inside body. We need different nutrients to keep us healthy.

“No be all absorption dey completely ‘blocked’ – some reduction fit just dey,” Alex Ruani, University College London doctoral researcher in nutrition science education and chief science educator for The Health Sciences Academy tok.

Di impact dey depend on di strength of di coffee; di amount of nutrients consumed, and individual risk factors such as age, metabolism, health status and genetics, Ruani explain.

Di nutrients wey we dey tok about include calcium, iron, and B vitamins.

No need to worry if your “nutrient levels don already dey enof, but for those wey don nearly hit deficiency or dey wit existing low levels, excessive coffee intake fit contribute to further depletion, Emily Ho, director of di Linus Pauling Institute and professor in di College of Health at Oregon State University tok.

Who need to dey cautious about dia cappuccino?

Since di 1980s, studies don associate coffee wit lower iron absorption.

“Wen you drink coffee wit a food, di polyphenols inside am fit attach to certain minerals in your digestive system,” Ho tok

She explain say dis binding process fit make am dey harder for your body to absorb di iron – as minerals need to pass through di intestinal cells to enta di bloodstream. “If e dey tie to polyphenols, dey simply pass through your body and you poo-poo am.”

Dis dey especially important for iron, particularly di type wey dey inside plant-based foods, wey dem dey call’non-heme iron’. Non-heme iron from foods like fruit and vegetables dey harder for di bod to absorb.

Polyphenols inside coffee – especially chlorogenic acid – fit attach to dis type of iron, stop am make e no absorb into bloodstream properly. Sake of result say, di iron remain tied to dis compounds as e dey move through di digestive system. You go eventually poo-poo am instead make di body use am.

All dis means say pipo wit iron-deficiency anaemia suppose dey cautious about drinking coffee wey too close to iron-rich meals.

“E fit dey best to enjoy your coffee at least one hour bifor or some hours afta you eat iron-rich foods so dem no go mix inside your belle,” Alex Ruani tok.

Women wey dey menstruate and di ones wey get belle often dey fall into dis category of pipo wey need to keep eye on dia iron levels. Dem typically need more iron and dey more prone to develop iron-deficiency anaemia so dem need to keep eyes on dia coffee intake.

Calcium

Calcium dey good for bone health, yet 9% of 16–49 year-olds in di UK dey consume less dan di Lowest Reference Nutrient Intake (LRNI) of calcium through dia food. Dis deficit dey put dem at risk of weak bones later in life.

Our kidneys dey remove waste and extra water from di blood (as urine) and help keep chemicals (like sodium, potassium, and calcium) balanced inside body. E dey also dey make hormones.

Studies suggest say caffeine fit make am harder for your body to hang on to calcium e go disturb how e dey processed in your kidneys and absorbed in di intestines.

Again, dis effects dey minimal and more important for pipo wey already dey eat low calcium diet or dey at higher risk for bone-related health issues.

“One popular study wey dem publish inside journal, Osteoporosis International, proposes say caffeine fit contribute to bone loss as e dey interfere wit bone metabolism,” Ruani tok. “But more studies dey needed to determine di true impact of caffeine on osteoporosis risk.”

Calcium fit dey stored by di body, so you no need to consume di recommended amount daily – but over di period of months adults weydey di age of 19-64 suppose average out around 700mg of calcium a day.

E also worth to get am for mind say caffeine get diuretic effect i.e. e dey increase how often you need to urinate.

“Dis fit lead to di loss of water-soluble vitamins (like some B vitamins) and minerals (like iron and calcium), as excretion dey play key role to regulate dia levels in di body,” Ho add.

B Vitamins

“Sake of coffee influence on kidney function and nutrient metabolism, to drink large amounts of coffee (like four cups a day or more), fit make you poo-poo too much and wit dat, di loss of water-soluble vitamins, including B vitamins,” Ruani explain.

B vitamins dey dissolve in water, so dem no dey stored in di body. Instead, any excess go comot for body through urine.

Probiotics

Probiotics na live bacteria and yeasts wey dey promoted to get various health benefits.

Dem fit dey helpful to restore di natural balance of bacteria inside your gut in some cases according to di NHS site but na small evidence dey to support many health claims about dem.

However, if you wan try probiotic supplements or probiotic-rich foods like yogurt and kimchi, e dey best to avoid to dey chop dem dem alongside hot drinks like coffee.

“Live bacteria wey dey inside probiotics dey highly sensitive to heat, and exposure to high temperatures – like di heat in coffee – fit reduce dia survival rate in di gastrointestinal tract, make dem less effective,” Ruani tok.

Sometimes e dey prescribed by doctors to help ease diarrhoea wey antibiotic medication cause, to get di maximum benefit wait 30-60 minutes bifor you take probiotic if you don take a cup of coffee.

E worth to swap out coffee for tea?

If you dey consider to switch to tea, e dey important to sabi say some of di same concerns apply to tea too.

“In fact, di polyphenols wey dey inside tea fit get similar effect on nutrient bioavailability, so e dey important to pay attention to di timing of your tea consumption if you dey worry about nutrient absorption,” Ho warn.

Pregnant women often dey fall in to dis category of pipo wey need to keep eye on dia iron levels wey fit also dey affected by dia coffee intake

“Obuobia Deserves More’ – Nana Aba Anamoah’s Bold Challenge to Mahama’s Decisions Sparks Outrage

News Hub Creator1h

Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have strongly criticized media personality Nana Aba Anamoah for questioning President John Dramani Mahama’s decisions regarding Obuobia Darko-Opoku’s appointment as reported by Ghana Web.

Anamoah recently sparked controversy on social media by suggesting that Mahama should have given Darko-Opoku a more prominent role, considering her dedication and efforts during the 2024 election campaign.

In a post on X, Anamoah expressed, “Obuobia Darko-Opoku practically wore out the soles of her shoes for her party ahead of the Dec. 7 elections.”

She further emphasized her loyalty and intellect, adding that Obuobia’s contributions were pivotal. “Obuobia didn’t just campaign.

She connected. From dawn meetings at Keta to late-night rallies at Techiman, she showed up,” Anamoah wrote, implying that she deserved a higher position than the current role of Deputy Managing Director at the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

However, many NDC supporters were quick to respond, claiming that Anamoah’s remarks undermined President Mahama’s leadership.

Some insiders pointed out that the position of Deputy Managing Director at GACL was created specifically for Obuobia, as the company had never held such a role before.

They also stated that many others worked tirelessly during the election but did not receive appointments, and they trust the president’s judgment.

Tema Eco-Tourism Centre honours World War veteran

By Francis Blankson / Deborah Naa Aku Allotey

Tema, May 12, GNA — The Tema Eco-Tourism Centre has honoured WOI Joseph Ashitey Hammond (Retired), a veteran of the Second World War, with a museum to commemorate his centenary birthday celebration.

The museum, located on the premises of the Eco-Tourism Centre in Tema Community One, has pictures of the pre-independence and post-independence activities, colonial rule, pre-independence artefacts, and some minerals such as bauxite and manganese.

Mr. Sefa Broni, the Chief Executive Officer of Tema Eco-Tourism Centre, stated that the museum was to honour the immense contribution of the veteran to the military and to the development of the country in different ways.

Mr. Broni stated that it was also to preserve the rich history of the country and provide residents of Tema and its environs the opportunity to gain firsthand information about colonialism, pre-independence, and the independence era as well as have a feel of Ghana’s mineral resources and vegetation.

He noted that the centre’s main objective was to protect and preserve the environment for current and future generations, adding that it was their vision to make the museum a preferred tourism destination globally by expanding the facilities soon.

He said they would organise exhibitions and funfairs to get people to visit the museum, adding that they hoped to also acquire the currencies of every country in the world, world minerals and over 20,000 antiques and artefacts to display in it.

Mr. Broni said the centre has four cash crops located on the premises: cocoa, coffee, para rubber and shea trees, which have a lot of socio-economic benefits.

He added that the entry fee to the museum is GHS10.00 for adults and GHS2.00 for schoolchildren, adding that they want the centre to serve as a learning and research place for people, especially schoolchildren.

He said he would be working with the relevant institutions to ensure that the facility was preserved to derive its purpose.

Mr. Broni assured the community that he will be watchful to prevent stray animals from entering the centre to avoid disruption by consulting the wildlife division.

WOI Joseph Ashitey Hammond (Rtd) expressed profound gratitude to God and the centre for the honour, stating that it would serve as a lasting legacy for future generations.

He enlightened the guests on insights into Ghana’s history and encouraged them to learn from the country’s pre-independence political leaders.

He planted a coffee plant to mark the day of inauguration of the museum, which he named “Ashitey Coffee”, stating that “My grandfather was the Ga chief and a cocoa buyer. He established a coffee factory at Osu, and I want to continue the family tradition.”

Rev. Father John Brenya of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Tema Community Two, who dedicated the facility, said forests and trees were divine gifts from God, urging the public to practice afforestation and preserve God’s nature.

“We should avoid indiscriminate cutting down of trees and maintain what we came to meet on earth and also plant more trees,” he said.

Politicians who were implicated in foreign currency scandals

0

L-R: Cecilia Dapaah, Sammy Gyamfi and Victoria Hammah L-R: Cecilia Dapaah, Sammy Gyamfi and Victoria Hammah

Throughout Ghana’s political history, numerous scandals that have rocked politicians have captured national attention and dominated public discourse, largely due to the seriousness and far-reaching implications of some of these incidents.

One such category of scandals involves foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar, which has often sparked intense public debate and scrutiny.

While some of these political scandals fade quickly without attracting significant public scrutiny, others, like those relating to the US dollar stand out as exceptions — often persisting in national conversation for extended periods, prompting official sanctions, and in more serious cases, resulting in the dismissal of those complicit in such matters.

This GhanaWeb article takes a look at some of these scandals relating to foreign currencies.

Sammy Gyamfi

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board and National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has made headlines after gifting an amount of about $800 dollars to fetish priestess-turned-pastor Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

In a video shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Gyamfi was seen standing beside his Range Rover, taking a photo with Nana Agradaa, who had her arm around him while locked in a brief conversation.

In the video at the center of the controversy, Nana Agradaa is heard making a remark to Sammy Gyamfi, prompting him to open the back door of a vehicle. He then sits down and begins counting several US dollar bills before handing a portion of the money to her.

However, Agradaa, seemingly unsatisfied, reaches out and grabs all the notes from Gyamfi’s hands.

She walks away, flaunting the dollar bills to bystanders, boldly declaring, “I have taken dollars from Sammy Gyamfi.”

The NDC stalwart has since come under intense backlash from the public with some calling for his dismissal.

Cecilia Dapaah

Another notable example of a scandal involving foreign currency is the case of former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, who came under intense public scrutiny in 2023 following revelations of a reported theft at her Abelemkpe residence.

According to media reports, two house helps allegedly stole significant sums — including one million US dollars, as well as undisclosed amounts in euros and Ghana cedis — over the course of their employment.

Official charge sheets further indicated that, beyond the cash, the accused also made away with personal belongings belonging to Madam Dapaah, including luxury clothing, handbags, perfumes, and jewelry. The value of the stolen non-cash items was reportedly estimated at GH¢95,000 and US$95,000 — figures that shocked many and raised questions about the source and safekeeping of such large sums of money in a private residence.

Amid intense public scrutiny and mounting allegations of corruption, Cecilia Abena Dapaah tendered her resignation from office. In her resignation letter, she stated that her decision was motivated by a desire to protect the government from further reputational damage, as the controversy surrounding the stolen funds had begun to cast a shadow over the administration’s image and integrity.

Victoria Lakshmi Hammah

A former Deputy Minister of Communications, Victoria Hammah, became the focus of national attention in 2013 after an audio recording leaked in which she allegedly stated that she would not leave politics until she had made one million US dollars.

In the recording, believed to be a private conversation with another woman, Hammah spoke candidly about her motivations for entering politics, her perceived influence within government, and the role of the Lithurs in the then-NDC administration.

The controversy generated significant public backlash and ultimately led to her dismissal from office by then-President John Dramani Mahama.

Some of the things the recording purports she said included the following “…I understand politics very well, if I haven’t made a million dollars I wouldn’t go and attack people. If you have money, then you can control over people.”

Golden Kicks manager sends strong message to Kotoko ahead of FA Cup final

0

Golden Kicks assistant manager Dr. Joy Say has boldly declared his team’s intentions ahead of the MTN FA Cup final against Asante Kotoko, following their impressive 3-1 semifinal victory over Attran Di Vissa.

In an interview with Ghana Sports Page, Dr. Say revealed that from the outset, winning the FA Cup and securing a place in the CAF Confederation Cup has been the club’s main focus, especially after their hopes of qualifying for the Premier League faded.

Looking ahead to the final against giants Kotoko, Dr. Say issued a strong statement:

“We are prepared to beat Kotoko the same way we are prepared for Africa.”

“We understood that we can’t qualify for Premiership so winning the FA Cup has always been our target,” he stated.

Golden Kicks, founded in 2016, have been one of the standout stories of this year’s competition, and their rise has been driven by belief, preparation, and ambition.

“We want to play Africa this year and we need to win the FA Cup to do that. We’ve prepared for that and come May 15, we will win the cup,” Dr. Say confidently added.

He emphasized that the club’s progress is not by luck, but by strategic planning and resilience.

“Golden Kicks has been in existence since 2016. If we do not have resources, why would we exist and fight to come this far?”

The final promises to be a thrilling encounter as underdogs Golden Kicks aim to upset one of Ghana’s most storied clubs and make history by clinching their first-ever major trophy and earning a place on the continental stage.

Climate change: Mahama advocates scaling up of green/blue bonds across Africa

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, May 12, GNA – As part of efforts to address climate change, President John Dramani has advocated the scaling up of green and blue bonds across the continent to finance environmental protection, clean energy, and sustainable agriculture.

“Ghana is exploring these options alongside broadening the tax base, digitizing revenue collection, and enhancing domestic capital markets to reduce dependency on external borrowing,” President Mahama stated in his remarks at the opening of the African Union Conference on Debt in Lomé, Togo.

The three-day meeting, which is being convened by the African Union Commission’s Department for Economic Development, Tourism, Trade, Industry, and Minerals (ETTIM) is the theme: “Africa’s Public Debt Management Agenda: Restoring and Safeguarding Debt Sustainability.”

The conference will convene AU Member States, policymakers, financial experts, and key stakeholders, including representatives from Ministries of Finance, African Central Banks, Regional Economic Communities, African Multilateral Financial Institutions, and Civil Society Organizations.

President Mahama underscored that African leaders must acknowledge what was not working.

“And what is not working, the first is the G20 Common Framework remains slow and creditor-driven,” he said.

The G20 Common Framework is a debt treatment initiative for Low-Income Countries (LICs) with unsustainable debt.

It aims to provide a structured approach to debt restructuring by coordinating official creditors (including Paris Club members and others like China) to facilitate timely, orderly, and durable debt treatment, as well as ensure fair burden-sharing between official and private creditors.

The President said of the five African countries that applied for the G20 Common Framework, only three had seen material progress under this framework.

He mentioned that the next was vulture funds and aggressive litigation undermined good faith and restructuring efforts and the third was that SGRA reallocation, which remained far below the $100 billion splash for Africa.

He said the issues demanded multilateral reform, and Africa’s voice must be heard at the table.

“Ghana is committed to rebuilding its fiscal buffers, strengthening our institutions, and promoting inclusive growth,” he said.

“But our fiscal consolidation must not come at the cost of social protection. And so, our strategy includes three of the following. One, protecting investments in education, youth empowerment, and rural development.”

President Mahama said the second was enhancing debt transparency through the establishment of an independent fiscal council and the third was expanding the role of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund to crowd in private capital.

He said their goal was not just to reduce their debts, but to transform their economy; saying “Debt must not erode our dignity or delay our development”.

“It must finance opportunity and lay the foundation for intergenerational progress.”

Touching on what was the continental call to action?  President Mahama said this moment and the conference at Lome must be the turning point, not only for Ghana but for Africa as a whole.

He said, he therefore joins his colleagues in calling for a common African position ahead of the 2025 G20 summit to demand timely, fair, and transparent debt restructuring frameworks.

He also called for standardized debt transparency benchmarks across the African Union and the integration of climate adaptation and sustainable development goals into their national debt strategies.

Mahama Visits Veep Amid Uncertainties

0

President Mahama pictured with the Veep

President John Mahama has visited Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who is recovering from an undisclosed illness abroad.

The President, in a Mother’s Day message posted on his Facebook page yesterday, revealed that he had visited the Vice President earlier in the day and was delightful she was recovering.

“A special Mother’s Day greeting to my Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, whom I had the pleasure of visiting earlier this morning,” the President wrote.

“She is taking a deserved rest after recovering from illness and looking forward to resuming her duties soon,” Mr. Mahama added.

The Vice President suffered a sudden illness on March 28, 2025, and was rushed to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) where she received emergency treatment.

A communication from the Presidency issued Sunday, March 30, 2025 by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, indicated that the Vice President was taken ill after work on Friday, March 28, 2025.

The statement further indicated that she received initial treatment at UGMC, and on the advice of her medical handlers, she will travel out of the jurisdiction for further treatment.

“The Vice President, Her Excellency Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, received treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre on Saturday due to a sudden illness that occurred after work on Friday, March 28, 2025,” the official statement from the presidency read, with no stated medical condition.

“Based on expert medical opinion, she will be seeking further care abroad. We wish the Vice President a speedy recovery,” Felix Kwakye Ofosu’s press release further read.

Uncertainties

But tongues have started wagging about the uncertainties surrounding the health condition of the Vice President.

Although the President has expressed delight at her recovery, what he did not tell Ghanaians was the issue of when she is coming back, considering it has been well over a month since she has been away from official duty. It therefore, remains unclear whether or not her condition has improved.

Initial speculation had it that the 73-year-old Vice President, who was sworn into office on January 7, 2025, suffered a heart attack barely four months into the government’s four-year mandate.

But information gathered by DAILY GUIDE suggests she suffered a different medical emergency whilst in a meeting that fateful Friday.

Sources say she was thus rushed to the University of Ghana Medical Centre in Legon, where she was somehow stabilised to enable arrangement to be made for her to be flown abroad for treatment the next day.

Meanwhile, government and its officials remain tight-lipped about her condition. Press Secretary and Spokesperson to the Vice President, Maame Ama Pratt is not forthcoming with information about her condition.

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is the first female to occupy the high office of Vice President of the Republic of Ghana.

She once served as Minister for Education under the John Dramani Mahama administration (January 7, 2013 to January 6, 2017).

In 2020, she partnered John Mahama to contest the presidential elections, but the pair lost to then President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. They paired again and won the 2024 presidential elections.

Netizens slam Falz over ‘fornication is not a sin’ comment

0

Nigerian rapper, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has come under heavy criticism following a recent comment he made about fornication.

On Sunday, in a terse post on X, Falz wrote, “Fornication is not a sin.”

The comment sparked outrage online, particularly among members of the religious community, with many citing biblical references to counter his claim.

While some, especially from religious groups, condemned his statement and quoted Bible verses in opposition, others defended Falz’s right to express his opinion.

A user on X, Olivia, tweeting as #Blessing_, suggested that Falz might be among “end-time celebrities” spreading false teachings.

She wrote, “1 Cor. 6:18 tells us to flee from it, as it is even a sin against one’s own body. The Bible also asks believers in 1 Cor. 5:9-11 to avoid fornicators. Galatians 5 makes it clear that God despises fornication.

“God instructed us to resist all sin, but when it comes to fornication — a sin of the flesh — He asked us to flee.

“I guess you guys are part of the end-time celebrities paid to spread false teachings.

“Painful… I liked you.”

Another user, Fash Daddy, tweeting as #thefashygram, echoed the same view in repetition, “Fornication is a sin, FLEE. Fornication is a sin, FLEE. Fornication is a sin, FLEE. Fornication is a sin, FLEE.”

Another X user, Dr Penking, suggested that Falz was simply seeking attention.

He wrote, “You dey follow chase clout at your age.”

Another user, Mr Wrong But Right expressed disappointment in the rapper, saying:

“I’m shocked to see this kind of tweet from a lawyer. May God have mercy.”

However, Some users sided with Falz, arguing that fornication is not considered a sin in legal or cultural contexts.

DataCraftman, tweeting as #Technnick, wrote, “Sin is for religious people, and fornication to them is a sin. Fornication is a legal act in our country. Leave sin for people wey know about am jare.”

Seunidowusings, tweeting under the same name, said, “He is right. Fornication is not a sin in the Bible — it is a Western or modern construct. In Jewish tradition, if you sleep with a woman and it’s consensual, you pay her bride price and marry her.

“Exodus 22:16 says: ‘If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife. If her father refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride price for virgins.’

“Apparently, two young people don’t need to marry before they have sex. Also, intending couples don’t need approval from parents, pastors, churches, or society through a wedding ceremony to have sex.”

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has called on the Ghana Police Service to intensify investigations and bring to justice those behind the murder of Asante Kotoko supporter, Pooley.

Speaking during the 24th anniversary commemoration of the May 9 Stadium Disaster at the Accra Sports Stadium, Mr. Okraku described Pooley’s death as a painful reminder of ongoing safety concerns in Ghanaian football.

“The loss of Pooley is a painful reminder that we still have work to do in protecting the lives of supporters and preserving the sanctity of the game,” he said. “I strongly urge the Ghana Police Service to pursue justice swiftly and ensure those responsible for his untimely death are held accountable.”

Pooley, a devoted fan of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, was reportedly murdered during a league match incident in Nsoatre, sparking outrage across the football community.

The GFA President emphasised the association’s commitment to working with stakeholders to eliminate hooliganism and violence at match venues. He noted that while progress has been made in improving infrastructure and enforcing regulations, full justice for victims remains essential.

The memorial event brought together key figures in Ghanaian football, including the Minister of Youth and Sports, members of the GFA Executive Council, representatives from Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, and families of the May 9 victims.

Mr. Okraku’s appeal comes as the football community reaffirms its commitment to the slogan: “Never Again.”

First white South Africans flying to US under Trump refugee plan

Some white South African farmers have picketed in support of President Trump Some white South African farmers have picketed in support of President Trump

The first set of 49 white South Africans to be granted refugee status by President Donald Trump’s administration are on their way to the US.

On Sunday they boarded a flight from Johannesburg which is due to land in Washington DC later on Monday.

This comes after a weekend of speculation about when the Afrikaners would leave for America, amid criticism from the South African government who described the US resettlement scheme as “politically motivated”.

Relations between South Africa and the US have been tense for months, after an executive order in February in which President Trump stated that Afrikaners were victims of “racial discrimination”.

The US has criticised domestic South African policy, accusing the government of seizing land from white farmers without any compensation – something which the southern African nation says has not happened.

Bilateral tensions have been strained for months as President Trump tasked his administration with formulating plans to potentially resettle Afrikaners in the US.

In March, South Africa’s ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, was expelled after accusing President Trump of using “white victimhood as a dog whistle”, leading to the US accusing Mr Rasool of “race-baiting”.

The current group of refugees comprises 49 people, who are expected to land in Washington, DC, later on Monday, before continuing to Texas.

President Trump’s openness to accepting Afrikaner refugees comes as the US has engaged in a wider crackdown on migrants and asylum seekers from other countries.

NDC members kick against alleged imposition of MCE for Asokore Mampong

Aggrieved members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Asawasi Constituency in the Ashanti region have objected to the President’s nomination of one Ben Abdallah as the Municipal Chief Executive for Asokore Mampong.

Suleiman Bin Masud, Member of the Constituency Communication Team at a press conference, a day after the names of the nominee popped-up, stressed that the Branch Executives and grassroots of the party in the Constituency do not know Ben Abdalla.

Gov’t commits to instilling discipline among NSS personnel through military training

0

The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to instilling discipline and leadership in National Service personnel through structured military-style training.

Speaking on The Probe, Mr Opare Addo disclosed that a Memorandum of Understanding (Mou) has been signed between the National Service Authority and the Ghana Armed Forces as part of efforts to enhance the capacity of graduates during their service year.

The initiative, he explained, aligns with the ruling NDC’s “Resetting the Nation” agenda, a key pillar of the party’s 2024 campaign. “If you aspire to become a global leader, discipline must be at the core of your personal development,” the Minister stated. “And what better institution exemplifies discipline than the military? This training is meant to prepare young people, especially those who want to assume leadership roles, with the right mindset and understanding of what leadership demands.”

He clarified that the programme is not intended to be physically rigorous military training, but rather a mindset reorientation aimed at instilling values of discipline, resilience, and leadership among the youth.

“We’re not putting them through boot camp,” he said. “It’s about reconditioning how they think, preparing them mentally for the professional world.”

Mr Opare Addo also addressed concerns over allowances, noting that no additional payments would be made for participation in the training.

“National Service personnel are already paid monthly allowances,” he explained. “If, during their one-year service, they spend two weeks or even two months in capacity-building programmes, they still receive their regular pay. So, there’s no justification for extra allowances.”

He further emphasised that service postings are determined by the National Service Scheme based on qualifications and national needs, not personal preference. “You don’t choose where you want to serve,” he stressed. “The scheme assigns you where your skills are needed most.”

The military-led training programme is expected to be rolled out as part of a broader strategy to shape the mindset and professional readiness of Ghana’s future workforce.

Kadjebi District: Update on iron ore prospecting at Gyamonome

0

By Daniel Agbesi Latsu

Kadjebi (O/R), May 12, GNA-The Africa Exploration and Minerals Group (AEMG), in collaboration with the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC), are steadily undertaking Resource Definition within the Gyamonome Bloc B of the Buem Formation, in the Oti Region.

Resource definition refers to a process in mineral exploration and mining, where the size, shape, grade, and location of mineral deposits are delineated with sufficient confidence to support mine planning and economic evaluation.

AEMG, began the drilling campaign on July 30, 2024, for the Gyamonome Iron Ore, and a total of 1,426.70 meters of diamond drilling to collect solid rock and other rock samples from underground and below the surface were completed.

Mr. Solomon Essah, Project Geologist of AEGM, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during an interview at the Drill Core Site at Gyamonome in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region.

The interview is a follow-up on the earlier interview granted the Agency in September 2024, with a publication titled “Prospecting of Gyamonome iron ore advances steadily with African Exploration, Minerals Group.”

The Project Geologist, mentioned that from the foregoing, “Geologically, drilling continues to confirm the potential for a significant iron ore deposit.”

On access and drill pad, where drilling rigs are set up to safely carry out the drilling preparations, Mr. Essah told GNA that significant work in 2025 has been carried out to expand the drilling footprint and that 12 additional drill pads were prepared to provide broader coverage for resource estimation and that “each main hole is paired with a twin hole for data verification and quality control”.

The Project Geologist said access routes and drill platforms were constructed with minimal environmental disturbance, incorporating drainage control and site rehabilitation measures.

He said, core cutting and sampling commenced in March 2025, making a transition to the analytical phase.

Mr. Essah said procedures are executed under strict Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) protocols.

He said rock samples have been sent to Intertek Genalysis Laboratory in Australia, for assay or analysis using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)-Optical Emission Spectrometry (OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)-Mass Spectrometry (MS) techniques.

The Project Geologist mentioned QA/QC protocols to include the insertion of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs), blanks, and field duplicates.

On other minerals discover, Mr. Essah told GNA that preliminary (X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis conducted by GGSA (Ghana Geological Survey Authority) has yielded the following significant results; elevated levels of base metals such as nickel, and more, and detection of secondary minerals such as manganese, chromium, and titanium, commonly associated with iron formations.

He said these findings suggest potential for polymetallic mineralization, offering new exploration opportunities beyond the primary iron target.

The Project Geologist said, the detailed chemical breakdown—including iron, silica, phosphorus, and sulfur content—will guide metallurgical test work and resource modeling.

He said several geological and operational challenges have affected drilling efficiency; manifesting as frequent bit wear and replacement due to abrasive lithologies, Rig downtime and maintenance activities contributed to reduced effective drilling hours, among others.

Despite these challenges, Mr. Essah said the team has successfully navigated complex subsurface conditions through strategic drilling adjustments, safety-conscious decision-making, and strong field collaboration.

On Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Commitment: he said the team continued to uphold high safety standards, with daily morning safety meetings, equipment pre-start checks, and end-of-day site housekeeping.

Waste is properly segregated into labeled bins to manage plastic, oil, and food waste, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

The Geologists disclosed that progress made so far affirmed the Gyamonome Bloc B’s strong potential for iron ore and associated base metal mineralization.

Mr. Essah added that they would continue with core drilling, expand sampling, and laboratory assays and that the AEMG remains committed to delivering a robust geological model and a future Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) in alignment with GIISDEC’s strategic goals.

“AEMG acknowledges the cooperation of the local communities, GIISDEC, and all stakeholders, and remains committed to safe, environmentally conscious, and economically impactful exploration on the Gyamonome concession”, he ended.

Committee recommends audit of damage to guide compensation plan

0

Chairman of the Akosombo Dam Spillage Committee, Kirk Koffi, has urged the government to conduct a comprehensive audit to ascertain the damage caused by the spillage in 2023, which displaced over 40,000 people at Mepe in the Volta Region and use it as a guide to compensate victims.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 on May 11, 2025, Koffi outlined the recommendations of the committee intended to prevent a recurrence of the disaster.

He indicated that the issue of compensation came up strongly during their discourse with indigenes and community heads.

The committee has consequently called for a detailed audit to assess the widespread destruction caused to guide the compensation plan.

“During the committee’s discussion with people in the affected communities, the issue of compensation was vehemently reiterated. The committee strongly recommends that the government provide adequate compensation to the affected communities upstream and downstream, which are predominantly made up of farmers, fishermen and businesses.

“This particular recommendation is very pertinent to the people in the affected communities. In addition, the government should audit all damaged properties and loss of livelihoods to enable them to distribute compensation adequately as outlined in the budget of 2025,” the report partly stated.

In a related development, a report by myjoyonline.com on May 11, 2025, has indicated that relevant authorities have developed guidelines for compensation aimed at offering relief to affected families and neighbouring communities.

Below are the recommendations of the committee:

1. Establishing a Controlled Spillage Floodplain:

To minimise the impact of future controlled spillages from the Akosombo Dam, a designated floodplain should be delineated to accommodate spill discharges of up to 497,936cfs (14,100m3/s), i.e., a 1:50-year flood in the short term to medium term in response to climate change uncertainties and 1:100 years, i.e. 540,313cfs (15,300m3/s), in the Long Term. Resilience improvement projects should consider critical public infrastructure upgrades located in the floodplain, e.g., Sogakope bridge, hospitals, etc. A resettlement plan should be considered for all people and properties located in the floodplain. A Legislative Instrument for the downstream floodplain (contour line) is required to prevent inhabitants from settling or building in that floodplain.

2. Enhance Emergency Preparedness:

Establish and regularly update comprehensive disaster preparedness plans locally, referencing the VRA’s Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP). Simplify the EPP to make it user-friendly by adopting strategies to interpret it in infographics and using local languages in its communication.

3. High Turnover and Divisions Amongst Political Appointees:

Create a collaborative task force comprising MCEs, MPs and stakeholders to focus on disaster preparedness. Implement a conflict resolution process, such as mediation or facilitation, to address disagreements constructively and establish accountability measures, such as public reports on disaster preparedness efforts, to hold leaders responsible for their efforts in disaster management.

4. Improve Communication:

Develop clear communication channels to ensure the timely dissemination of information regarding flood risks and response measures.

5. Resourcing of NADMO and District Assemblies:

Provide adequate funding for district assemblies. In addition, Emergency response centres should be provided with backup systems and stockpiles of essentials to respond to disasters.

6. Lack of Localised Emergency Preparedness Plan in most districts:

Organise regular drills and simulations to practice emergency response procedures secure funding and resources to support developing and implementing localised EPPs and updating Disaster Management Plans.

7. Strengthen Community Engagement:

Improve community education programs and education curricula in schools to raise awareness about future flood risks and the importance of adhering to building regulations in flood- prone areas.

8. Implementing Engineering Solutions for Flood Management:

Engineering solutions can be employed along the downstream catchment area to enhance flood management by improving the capacity to regulate water flow and mitigate the impact of controlled spillages on downstream communities. These solutions can increase water conveyance efficiency and enhance the river system’s ability to accommodate excess water without severe inundation, e.g., Mepe.

9. Delineation of floodplains:

Delineate floodplains by improving vegetative cover with identifiable plantations, i.e., mangrove (downstream), use of concrete pillars or bamboo plantation (upstream & downstream)

10. Safe Havens Management:

Develop multipurpose structures on high grounds that can be used as classrooms or town halls in the affected communities and easily reconfigured as safe havens when needed. Offer psychological support services to help residents cope with the stress of displacement and promote community cohesion. Establish channels for residents to provide feedback on their experience and suggest improvements for the safe haven.

11. Compensation:

During the Committee’s discussion with people in the affected communities, the issue of compensation was vehemently reiterated. The Committee strongly recommends that the government provide adequate compensation to the affected communities upstream and downstream, which are predominantly made up of farmers, fishermen and businesses. This particular recommendation is very pertinent to the people in the affected communities. In addition, the Government should audit all damaged properties and loss of livelihoods to enable them to distribute compensation adequately as outlined in the budget of 2025.

12. Procedure for payment of compensation:

An account should be opened for each affected district, and funds for compensation should be deposited. A “Claims Office” for the disbursement of the funds should also be set up to receive data on the affected flood victims who are eligible for compensation. The Ministry of Finance shall be the supervisory body and shall work with the Member of Parliament (MP) and the District Assembly of the affected community in the disbursement of monies meant for compensation. Third parties such as the Chiefs, Queen mothers and opinion leaders in the affected communities may be needed to confirm certain claims made by the affected people. The signatories to the account are to be the Ministry of Finance and either the MP or the DCE.

Sharp Cedi gains could hurt exports, undermine growth – Prof. Baah-Boateng

0

Economist and Professor at the University of Ghana, Professor William Baah-Boateng, has expressed concern over the sharp and rapid appreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi, warning that the development, while seemingly positive, could have unintended consequences for key sectors of the economy.

His caution comes in the wake of recent reports highlighting a significant rebound in the Cedi’s value against major international currencies. The interbank rate now stands at GH¢13.29 to the US dollar, a marked improvement from rates above GH¢16 earlier this year.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, May 12, 2025, Prof. Baah-Boateng urged a measured response to the currency’s upward trajectory, stressing that swift appreciation may have negative repercussions.

“My concern a bit is that the appreciation is very sharp. And when the appreciation is that sharp, you get a bit worried because you may not know what is down there and have to be cautious,” he stated.

He explained that while a stronger Cedi can help lower the cost of imports, it also makes Ghanaian exports less competitive, potentially discouraging export activity and increasing reliance on imports.

“When there is an appreciation, we are happy, but we may not know what is in the reversal. When you have an appreciation, it encourages import and discourages export. When there is appreciation, and there is import, it reflects on domestic prices.

“On the other side, there will be a problem as exporters will also begin to complain because they are going to get less amount of money when they export. When the exporters see that they are not benefiting when they export, they will leave the export and go on to import.”

Prof. Baah-Boateng further cautioned that increased imports could undercut domestic production, especially if local producers are unable to match the lower prices of imported goods.

“Also, domestic production is going to have a problem because when you have more imports to come and compete with the domestic market. Remember, local prices may not have gone up, so they may be producing using a higher price compared to what is coming into the country.

“So, what is coming in from outside will then come, as it were, to compete with the domestic market, and when that happens, it will undermine our economic growth,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) has urged its members to reduce the prices of goods and services in response to the Cedi’s recent appreciation.

Tight security as Bole MCE nominee faces confirmation

0

A heavy security presence has been deployed at the Bole Municipal Assembly ahead of the confirmation vote for Abdulai Mahamud as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

The confirmation exercise, scheduled for today, Monday, May 12, 2025, will see 39 delegates casting their votes.

This development follows heightened tensions in the Bole Municipality in the Savannah Region, where, on Friday, May 9, scores of aggrieved youth staged a protest against Mahamud’s nomination.

The demonstration, which saw protesters accuse authorities of ignoring local voices in the selection process, forced the postponement of the initial confirmation.

In response to concerns over potential disruptions, security has been significantly tightened around the assembly premises.

Journalists have also been denied access to the venue, as security personnel enforce strict control measures to maintain order.

Sammy Gyamfi ‘Sprays’ Dollars On Agradaa

A viral video showing Sammy Gyamfi, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), handing over an alleged $10,000 in cash to former fetish priestess turned evangelist, Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has triggered widespread criticism and internal uproar within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The footage, which surfaced on social media on Saturday, captures a brief roadside interaction between Mr. Gyamfi and Nana Agradaa.

In the video, Agradaa is heard requesting some dollar notes from the acting CEO’s vehicle. Moments later, Mr. Gyamfi is seen counting what appears to be several bundles of U.S. currency, which Agradaa snatches playfully before turning to flaunt the money in front of nearby bystanders.

In another video, Agradaa boasts about receiving $10,000, waving the money in front of a camera and reiterating that it was a gift.

The incident, perceived as extravagant and politically tone-deaf, especially amid growing economic hardship and anti-corruption sentiments, has provoked fury from within Sammy’s own party.

Some NDC grassroots activists and supporters took to social media to express disappointment, questioning the judgment of a senior official known for his sharp criticisms of corruption under the previous administration. The backlash has been swift and pointed.

“Can President Mahama stand by his code of conduct and fire Sammy Gyamfi for dashing Agradaa dollars in public?” one user, identified as Onipa Nua, posted on X (formerly Twitter). Another supporter, Kwame Ato, commented: “Resign peacefully, bruh [bro]. You started well but this goof is too expensive for a reset.”

Akua Obidombie added fuel to the comparisons, writing: “Now, what’s the difference between Cecilia Dapaah who had money under her bed and Sammy Gyamfi who flaunts money in his car?”

Her remarks referenced the widely criticised scandal involving the former Minister of Sanitation, whose unexplained hoard of cash sparked national outrage.

Kay Parker, another known party activist, noted bitterly: “You’ve given the opposition something to talk about.”

In response to the rising criticism, Sammy Gyamfi issued a statement on Sunday, acknowledging the concerns and offering an apology. “Folks, I have taken notice of the wave of criticisms against my person in the last 24 hours,” he began.

“To clarify, this was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and life-long custom of lending a helping hand to people in need,” he stated further.

Mr. Gyamfi expressed regret over the public nature of the incident. “I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that [the] same could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable,” he wrote.

Addressing his critics directly, the acting CEO added, “I understand the uproar that this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by [the] same. To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.”

He also thanked those who offered counsel and support in the wake of the incident.

The controversy places Mr. Gyamfi, who is also the NDC’s National Communications Officer, in a politically precarious position, especially as the party seeks to present a clean and credible front ahead of the 2028 general election. The gesture to Agradaa, a polarising figure with a controversial past, has further compounded the backlash.

While the party leadership has yet to issue an official statement, pressure is mounting from within the NDC’s base for accountability, with some calling for disciplinary action or even Gyamfi’s resignation.

Shamima Muslim confident government will fix Accra street lighting

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to resolving the persistent issue of poor street lighting in the capital city.

Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show on Monday, May 12, Ms. Muslim acknowledged the seriousness of the problem and outlined steps being taken to address it.

She referenced earlier remarks by the Greater Accra Regional Minister during her vetting, noting the urgency with which the issue was being tackled.

“When she assumed office, the Greater Accra Minister took the situation very seriously and gave herself at least 50 days to begin fixing the many broken-down streetlights,” she said.

“It’s true that Accra is largely dark you can’t escape that reality, and it’s something we must confront.”
Shamima Muslim also highlighted the active role of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition in addressing systemic inefficiencies within the power sector.

However, she pointed out that the government is grappling with significant financial hurdles, particularly in relation to the sector’s mounting legacy debts.

“The Ministry is working diligently on this issue. Our power sector carries the second-highest debt burden after COCOBOD,” she noted.

“There are deep inefficiencies, aggravated by years of collusion and corruption. We are essentially sitting on debilitating debt.” She revealed.

In addition, she expressed concern over the ongoing investigation into missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), questioning how vital infrastructure meant to improve energy supply could vanish without explanation.

“We’re still waiting for answers on the missing ECG containers. Where are they?” she asked. “And what about the poles meant to light our streets? We’ve seen images of them abandoned in uncompleted buildings and overgrown areas. How do ECG poles and cables, which should be boosting connectivity, end up in neglected communities?” She questioned.

While acknowledging the scale and complexity of the challenge, Ms. Muslim cautioned that the problem cannot be resolved overnight.

She stressed the need for a long-term approach rather than quick fixes.

“These are not issues that can be solved in four months,” she said.

“We must first confront the problem, identify the leakages, and understand the root causes. As a new government, we are determined to break from the past and provide clear evidence of a different, more effective approach.” She said.
When asked by host Sweety Abochie whether the government was genuinely committed to illuminating the streets of Accra, Ms. Muslim responded with conviction.

“Absolutely. That’s why we’ve set ourselves a 120-day timeline—to put pressure on ourselves and deliver results,” she concluded.
