Ghana has won the bid to lead Africa in the establishment of the African Medicines Agency.

The African Medicines Agency (AMA) is a specialized agency of the African Union (AU) established to improve equitable access to quality, safe, and effective medical products in Africa.

The agency aims to promote harmony in the regulation and trade of pharmaceutical products across the continent.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Dr Delese Mimi Darko has been appointed as the Head of the African Medicines Agency.

This comes as great news to the nation as Ghana beat Morocco among 100 other member FDAs that aimed to lead the move.

This happened during the 2nd Session of the Conference of State Parties to the Treaty for the Establishment of the African Medicines Agency (AMA) held at Kigali in Rwanda from June 2 to June 4, 2025.

It must be admitted that this process began under former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s regime and was remarkably sustained by the current president, John Dramani Mahama, who maintained Dr Delese Mimi Darko as the FDA boss.

This helped to complete the process, promoting a “one-Ghana” agenda and resulting in this watershed for Ghana.

The MOU was signed by Dynacor and Ansong Askew Ltd at the Mining in Motion summit The MOU was signed by Dynacor and Ansong Askew Ltd at the Mining in Motion summit

Dynacor Group Inc (TSX: DNG) (“Dynacor” or the “Corporation”), is delighted to announce signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) joint venture agreement with Ansong Askew Ltd. (“Ansong-Askew”) in Ghana.

The MOU establishes a framework for planning, due diligence, and strategic alignment toward establishing a commercial partnership, with the objective of formalising a joint venture agreement (“JVA”) in Ghana’s gold processing sector.

The strategic collaboration is designed to explore and develop mutual business opportunities that will not only benefit stakeholders of both organizations but also contribute to the regulation of Ghana’s artisanal mining sector, enabling the Ghana Gold Board and miners to work together seamlessly.

The partnership seeks to leverage Dynacor’s long-standing expertise in traceable, scalable processing of artisanal gold ore with Ansong-Askew’s commercial network and

influence.

The Ghana Gold Board is a new governmental entity that is responsible for regulating, overseeing, monitoring, and managing the purchasing, assaying, refining, and exporting of artisanal and small-scale gold in Ghana.

Scope of the MOU

Under the 12-month MOU, both parties agree to explore the effective use and integration of their technical, commercial, and strategic capacities with the intent to collaborate in good faith towards a JVA.

A subsequent agreement will define the structure, equity participation, capital contributions, governance model, and profit-sharing terms of the joint venture, where Dynacor will hold a majority position.

“This MOU marks the first, serious step in a promising partnership within Ghana, the country where artisanal mining is greatest in Africa,” noted Jean Martineau, President & CEO of Dynacor.

“We are excited to explore the opportunities ahead and look forward to the meaningful impact this partnership will have on our shareholder value-creation plans and on the artisanal gold mining sector in Ghana.”

“The signing of this MOU recognizes the strategic synergies between Dynacor and Ansong- Askew, and our shared commitment to promoting government-permitted, environmentally friendly artisanal gold processing in Ghana,” commented Elena Ansong, Managing Director of Ansong-Askew. “Together, we aim to develop a robust collaboration that enhances Ghana’s position as a leader in the gold mining industry.”

Next Steps

The Corporation is currently attending the Mining in Motion summit in Accra where it has held multiple discussions with the Ghana Gold Board and with players in the artisanal mining sector.

Building on the MOU and extensive relationships built, Dynacor will look to purchase a land concession or a future processing plant in a location informed by its geological sampling, meetings and research.

Ghanaian sprint star Benjamin Azamati has expressed pride and relief after officially qualifying for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

The 26-year-old hit the qualifying standard at the McNabb Sprint Series, clocking 9.98 seconds in the men’s 100m with a legal wind reading of +1.2 m/s, his season’s best performance so far.

The time places him joint 17th on the global qualification list and reaffirms his position as one of Ghana’s most consistent performers in recent sprinting history.

Reacting to the achievement in an interview with Sporty FM, Azamati shared a mix of gratitude and emotional release after what has been a testing journey.

“I feel grateful and proud. It’s been a long journey with ups and downs, so finally making the qualification mark takes some pressure off,” he said.

Azamati added that the result now allows him to focus more calmly on what lies ahead.

“Now I can focus on the rest of the season and prepare to be in my best shape in September,” he added.

The Olympic semi-finalist and national relay record holder opted out of the 2025 World Relays in Guangzhou to concentrate on qualifying individually in the 100m, a strategic decision that has clearly paid off.

This latest performance also marks the fourth time Azamati has broken the 10-second barrier under legal wind conditions, more than any Ghanaian athlete in history.

Beyond his brilliance, he remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s 4x100m relay team and famously ran the back straight in the squad that set the national record (38.07s) at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene.

Speculative Dollar Hoarding Driving Artificial Cedi Gains – Henry Kokofu Warns of Export Threat

0

Former Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Secretary hopeful, Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has cautioned that the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the U.S. dollar is largely artificial and poses a threat to Ghana’s export competitiveness if not properly managed.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV, Kokofu attributed the strengthening of the cedi not to structural economic improvements, but to speculative practices and a decline in global demand for the U.S. dollar.

“The rise of the dollar is artificial,” Kokofu said. “Top businessmen in Ghana are engaging in speculative buying. Some wake up as early as 5am to buy and hoard dollars, creating artificial demand.”

He further explained that changes in the global economic landscape, including reduced reliance on the U.S. dollar by emerging economic blocs like the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), are also contributing to the weakening of the dollar globally.

“Brazil doesn’t need it, China doesn’t need it, South Africa and the BRICS block don’t value the dollar like before,” he noted. “That is why the dollar is coming down or depreciating against the cedi.”

Kokofu warned that while the Cedi’s current rise may seem like good news, it could harm Ghana’s exporters and local industries in the long term if not addressed with the right policy framework.

“As your cedi is rising, you are killing export drive,” he cautioned. “If we don’t take care and balance it, and we are glorifying in the fact that the dollar is depreciating, we will end up with low or no exports.”

He emphasized the need for strong export-oriented policies to ensure sustainable economic growth.

Without such policies, he warned, the relative strength of the cedi could encourage a surge in imports, leading to a flood of foreign goods that would undermine local producers.

“If importation goes up because the dollar is cheap, people will buy it to import goods and flood the country, killing local industries,” he said.

Kokofu’s comments come amid growing debate over the true drivers of the cedi’s performance and the broader implications for Ghana’s economy as policymakers work to balance currency stability with export competitiveness.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to stage a demonstration in response to the recent approval of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 4, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye stated that the party, in collaboration with other political groups, will hit the streets of Kumasi to protest the levy, which he labelled a “wicked” and “obnoxious” tax.

The bill, which includes a GH¢1 fuel levy, was passed by Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, despite a walkout by the Minority Caucus, who criticised it as an added financial strain on Ghanaians.

The bill is intended to raise additional revenue to address the nation’s crippling energy sector debt and ensure stable power supply.

The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who laid the bill under a certificate of urgency, stated that the energy sector’s total indebtedness stands at US$3.1 billion as of March 2025.

MTN Heroes Of Change: Adangabey Empowers Young Minds

0

“Being a cerebral palsy patient who has overcome all barriers to attain high level of formal education, it hurts to see abled children denied the opportunity to have a good start to their education. This moved me to establish a preparatory school in my hometown, Kadema.” – Yaw Rockson Adangabey founder of Adangabey Royal Int. School.

He found out that at Gbedema which has only one government school serving the whole district, the government school only admits children 5 years and above, leaving him with the option of establishing the Adangbey Royal International School that seeks to serve school going children as young as 2 years old.

“I established the Adangbey Royal International School, the first ever private school in the Builsa South community to encourage parents to take their children to school at an early age. Building a good early foundation for our children is my goal” he said.

The school operates in a rented two-bedroom house, with classes starting from nursery, kindergarten, primary 1-4. Parents pay fees GH¢120 and below. Children are not sent away for nonpayment, there is a flexible payment structure unique to each parent.

The facility has been able to provide education for about 160 children so far and hope to extend same to other children of families in far away communities, to give them hope for the future.

“I feel very happy and fulfilled knowing that I have made it possible for the children to attend school, which is an opportunity for them to grow into responsible citizens who would someday give back to their communities” he said.

Sofia Ayaric, a retired lecturer from Tamale Technical University, who nominated Yaw Rockson for the MTN Heroes of Change contest said being a differently abled individual from a poor background, Rockson has defied the odds to make a meaningful impact in his community. Despite his own challenges, this individual has dedicated his time, knowledge, and limited resources to provide education for the less privileged.

Sofia is inspired by the nominee’s selfless dedication, confidence, and passion for education. She believes that recognising him with an award would not only be a well-deserved commendation but also a boost to help him continue serving humanity.

“The nominee’s commitment to making a positive impact in his community is seen as an inspiration to people from all walks of life, regardless of their abilities or socio-economic status. His story serves as a reminder that everyone can make a difference, no matter their circumstances,” she said.

Beneficiaries of the school, including Lamisi Ajutie and Eric Azungbiik, have shared heartfelt testimonials about the impact of Rockson Yaw Adangabey’s work. Their children have benefited from his dedication and passion, demonstrating significant improvements in their behavior, academic performance, and overall development.

The school has filled a critical gap in the community, providing access to quality education that was previously unavailable. Many parents, including peasant farmers, can now send their children to school without having to travel long distances or incur significant expenses.

Rockson Yaw Adangabey’s mentoring and guidance have also inspired his students to set career goals and pursue their dreams. One beneficiary, Ransford Ajutie, now aspires to become a police officer, thanks to the nominee’s influence.

Tema West MP donates mathematical sets to BECE candidates

0

By Lawrencia Akoto Frempong

Tema, June 4, GNA – Mr James Enu, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema West, in collaboration with the Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) and the Ghana Education

Service (GES), has donated mathematical sets to the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates towards this year’s examination.

The team also presented free sanitary pads to female students in some basic and senior high schools within the municipality to promote girl child education.

Mr Enu told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the donation was to equip the candidates ahead of the examination, while their visit was also to encourage the candidates to do their best in the BECE.

He noted that, with sponsorship from him, a mock examination was conducted for all the schools within the municipality under strict observation from him and some officials from the GES.

He said that the BECE was very crucial, as it is the first external exam that would set the foundation for their future; therefore, there is a need for them to do well in it.

The MP added that once they are able to build their confidence and do well in their exams, it would propel them into the next stage of their academic and career lives.

“We are doing all these things to support, motivate and encourage them to study hard and also get the necessary support and learning materials needed for their final preparations,” he said.

Mr Enu added that, as the MP for the constituency, he was very optimistic that the area would have good results, as they have provided the necessary support and materials for the candidates to study.

He noted that as part of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) manifesto led by President John Dramani Mahama, to embark on the distribution of sanitary pads, most basic and senior high schools within the municipality have received theirs to be distributed to the female students.

The MP added that this initiative by the president is set to bring some financial relief to parents and the ordinary Ghanaian, adding that the policy intervention would alleviate the burden on parents and improve the promotion of female education in the country.

He explained that some in-school teenage girls become distressed during their menses as their parents could not afford to purchase sanitary pads for them, which affects their academics.

The MP also bemoaned the rise in indiscipline among students in the schools, indicating that it was alarming and needed a national concerted and comprehensive plan to deal with such acts, noting that it was important to engage the youth in a skill training or work to prevent idleness at home and the temptation to engage in indiscipline acts.

Mr Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, who accompanied the team, noted that the assembly was interested in the growth of the children, as they are the hearts of the municipality, and therefore, supporting them in their preparations towards the exams.

He said his outfit wished the candidates the best in their studies, reiterating that the BECE was a good steppingstone into their future.

He also encouraged them to put in their best, knowing that the assembly was behind them not only with the necessary materials but also in prayers and spirit so that they came out with flying colours.

Cedi will stay strong against foreign currencies – Ato Forson assures Ghanaians

0

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has given strong assurance that the Ghanaian Cedi will remain stable against major foreign currencies.

Speaking in Parliament during the debate on the Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill on Wednesday, Dr. Forson said the government is taking key steps to support the Cedi. One major move is that the foreign currency earned from gold sales through the Ghana Gold Board will now go directly to the Bank of Ghana to build up reserves.

“For the first month alone, the Gold Board bought 11.4 tonnes of gold worth $1.2 billion. This money is already with the central bank and will help make the Cedi stronger,” Dr. Forson explained.

He added that the government is focused on keeping the Cedi strong, lowering the cost of living, and creating jobs.

“We want Ghanaians to be happy. Prices of goods are coming down. Inflation is falling. The Ghana Cedi is doing well, and this trend will continue,” he told Parliament.

Dr. Forson also rejected claims that the stable exchange rate is only because the government is not spending money.

The Finance Minister promised that the government, under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will continue to work hard to keep the economy steady and improve the lives of citizens.

Revenue from GH¢1 ‘Dumsor Levy’ surpasses all abolished taxes by NDC – Dr Amin Adam

0

Dr Mohammed Amin Adam is Ghana's former Minister of Finance Dr Mohammed Amin Adam is Ghana’s former Minister of Finance

Former Minister of Finance, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has sharply criticised the recently approved GH¢1 daily Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill, describing it as an unjustifiable burden on already struggling Ghanaians.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on June 3, 2025, Dr Amin Adam distanced himself from the controversial levy, popularly referred to as the “Dumsor Levy” and urged the government to reconsider what he called a “regressive and insensitive” policy.

“Not long ago, they [the NDC] were celebrating the abolishment of taxes, but I’m sorry to say that all the taxes they abolished, when put together, did not even bring in GH¢5 billion. This government is now seeking to raise GH¢5.7 billion from this newly imposed levy,” he said.

“Mr. Speaker, during the budget debate, I indicated that despite the talk of abolishing taxes, this new administration was going to impose severe taxes on citizens and burden their already strained pockets,” the former minister added.

The levy, passed by Parliament under a certificate of urgency, imposes a GH¢1 charge per litre on all petroleum products.

According to the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the tax measure is intended to raise funds to pay off energy sector debts, particularly obligations to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and stabilize electricity supply.

However, Dr Amin Adam, who served as finance minister under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, described the policy as “lazy policymaking”, asserting that it shifts the cost of poor governance and energy sector mismanagement onto the backs of ordinary citizens.

He also criticised the lack of transparency surrounding the levy’s design, implementation, and duration, warning that such approaches erode public trust and could deepen economic hardship.

“This levy is poorly timed and poorly targeted. It punishes the poor and working class while failing to address the root inefficiencies in the energy sector,” he added.

Dr Amin Adam called for a reassessment of government spending priorities and a more equitable fiscal strategy, one that cuts waste in the energy value chain and renegotiates expensive power purchase agreements, rather than imposing new taxes on the public.

The approval of the Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill has sparked widespread backlash, with opposition parties, civil society organisations, and trade unions warning of potential protests and legal challenges. The Minority in Parliament boycotted the vote and has pledged to repeal the levy if elected in the upcoming general elections.

Banned Premier League referee David Coote spotted working as delivery man

David Coote was seen making deliveries David Coote was seen making deliveries

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been seen delivering parcels for courier company Evri, months after being sacked by the PGMOL and banned by UEFA.

Coote, 42, was dismissed by the referees’ body in December following the emergence of two damaging video clips.

One showed him insulting then-Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp, while another appeared to show him snorting a white substance.

The PGMOL deemed his actions untenable and terminated his contract.

In February 2025, UEFA handed him a 16-month suspension for violating the basic rules of decent conduct and bringing the sport into disrepute.

He was also stood down from officiating European matches and became the subject of a betting investigation by the FA, though Coote has denied any wrongdoing in that matter.

Rarely seen since his fall from grace, Coote resurfaced in footage from a doorbell camera, delivering a parcel to a couple in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

He has since confirmed his new role.

“I’m just trying to make an honest living. I want to get on with my life. It’s not a new long-term career.”

He added that the job helps keep him occupied and allows more time with family and friends. Coote officiated over 100 Premier League matches before his career unravelled.

Court Gives AG Last Chance In Afoko Trial

0

A HIGH COURT in Accra has given the Attorney General (AG) up to July 15, 2025, to decide on the way forward in the trial of Gregory Afoko, who has been accused of the heinous murder of Adams Mahama, the then Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The court, presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, indicated that the Attorney General, who is reviewing the case, has up to July 15 to expedite his decision else she will dissolve the jury hearing the case.

The court had adjourned the case for about seven weeks after a state attorney told the court that the Attorney General was reviewing the case.

However, Nana Akosua Kusi, a State Attorney, appearing before the court last Friday, indicated that the Attorney General was not done reviewing the case.

The judge, who not impressed with the development, said the AG has up to the next court date to expedite the review or risk the jury being dissolved.

Gregory Afoko was released from prison on March 28, 2025, nearly ten years after he was first remanded.

This was after his two sureties were able to meet all the conditions of the GH¢500,000 bail granted him by a High Court in Accra on February 21, 2025.

Afoko was arrested for allegedly pouring acid on Adams Mahama, leading to his death.

His lawyers have tried since 2015 to secure bail for him but various courts had turned down the request.

However, on February 21, 2025, a High Court presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons granted him bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties who must be justified.

Third Trial

He is currently on a third round of trial after the first trial was truncated in 2019 by the Office of the Attorney General following the arrest of Afoko’s alleged accomplice, Asabke Alangdi, who fled the country after the incident in May 2015.

The second trial ended on April 27, 2023, with a seven-member jury presenting a verdict that shocked many.

The jury by a 4:3 decision found Gregory Afoko not guilty of conspiring to murder the late Adams Mahama, but unanimously found his co-accused, Asabke Alangdi guilty of the same offence.

The jury, however, by 4:3 decision found the two accused persons not guilty of the substantive charge of murder, thereby resulting in a hung jury and a retrial by a different jury.

While Afoko is facing a retrial as a result of a hung jury, Asabke Alangdi was sentenced to death by hanging after he was convicted by the court based on the jury’s guilty verdict on the charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

Part of the prosecution’s facts state that the deceased returned home around 11:10 p.m. in his pick-up vehicle when the suspects poured the substance suspected to be acid on his head, face and other parts of his body and fled on a motorbike.

Nasboi revealed on Tuesday that his vehicle collided with a parked trailer.

“At this point, I think I need to give up. Thank God nobody was injured or killed. We are all good.”

Ghana Water Limited to prosecute over 800 illegal water users in Accra West

Accra Regional Chief Manager Ing. Emmanuel Johnson.

Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL), Accra West Region, has announced plans to prosecute individuals involved in illegal water connections, after uncovering nearly 1,500 cases across its 12 operational districts between the last quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025.

25 ‘Kidnapped’ Victims Assist Police In Investigations

Some of the suspects on their way to the police station

The Western Regional Police Command has started taking statements from the 25 individuals who were rescued from a suspected kidnapping hideout at Effiakuma, near Takoradi.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that statements of the victims, believed to have been brought from neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire, are being taken through an interpreter.

As at the time of filing this report, five of the victims had given their statements and confirmed that they were indeed brought from Cote d’Ivoire.

They also confirmed that it was the arrested suspects who brought them to Ghana, apparently to get them a job.

It would be recalled that the 25 individuals were purportedly lured through what appeared to be a fraudulent recruitment scheme.

According to reports, many of the rescued individuals were visibly weak to move, when they were found.

The police have confirmed that they have arrested five suspects in connection with the case.

The suspects, made up of four men and one woman, were apprehended during initial police interrogation with one of the victims, a male, in his early 30s, who managed to escape captivity on Sunday, June 1, 2025.

The victim sought help from a trader in the Effiakuma Zongo area, but the trader, unable to understand the victim’s dialect, alerted a resident called Abdul Ganiyu.

Ganiyu identified the language of the victim as ‘Dyula’, which is commonly spoken in Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

The victim explained that he and his wife and others were lured through an alleged fraudulent recruitment scheme, and revealed where the others were being kept.

Ganiyu then reached out to the Assembly Member for Effiakuma Zongo, Hamza Mohammed Ameen Adam, and together with some concerned residents, stormed the eight-bedroom apartment near the Takoradi Technical University, where the victims were being kept.

The victims were later rescued and handed over to the police for further investigations.

Inflation for May 2025 drops sharply to 18.4%, lowest since March 2022

0

Reduction in transport fares contributed to the inflation drop in May 2025 Reduction in transport fares contributed to the inflation drop in May 2025

Inflation for May 2025 has dropped significantly to 18.4%, down from 21.2% recorded in April 2025.

This means that, on average, the prices of goods and services increased by 18.4% over the past year.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), the decline in inflation is primarily due to a reduction in transportation fares and a fall in non-food inflation.

Government Statistician, Dr Alhassan Iddrisu speaking during a press briefing on June 4, 2025, attributed the drop to lower fuel prices at the pumps, which led to a subsequent reduction in transport fares.

“These were the main drivers of the decline in inflation for the month of May,” he said.

At the regional level, Dr Iddrisu noted that the Upper West Region recorded the highest inflation rate at 38.1%, while the Ahafo Region posted the lowest at 14.5%.

Since the beginning of the year, inflation has been on a downward trend, reflecting improvements in key economic indicators.

The latest figures for May 2025 marks the lowest inflation rate recorded since March 2022.

‘We shall see who is truly called by God’ – Adom Kyei Duah responds to Diana Asamoah

General Overseer of Believers Worship Center, Prophet Adom Kyei Duah (L) and Diana Asamoah (R) General Overseer of Believers Worship Center, Prophet Adom Kyei Duah (L) and Diana Asamoah (R)

The General Overseer of Believers Worship Center, Prophet Adom Kyei Duah, has issued a strong response to gospel musician Diana Asamoah, accusing her of attempting to tarnish his hard-earned reputation and questioning his spiritual calling.

This latest clash follows a series of social media confrontations between the two public figures, sparked by Diana Asamoah’s criticism of the prophet.

In viral videos, the gospel singer accused Adom Kyei Duah of turning his church into a commercial hub, alleging that he has been selling drinks and other items under the guise of ministry.

But reacting during a sermon to his congregation on June 1, 2025, Prophet Adom Kyei Duah addressed the allegations, expressing disappointment and issuing a stern warning.

“This is the first time in my life that a woman has attacked me and insulted my personality,” he said. “Over my dead body will she triumph over me. She wasn’t raised properly. I won’t be the one to warn her, Heaven will speak on my behalf, and everyone will bear witness to it,” he stated.

The prophet further stated that time would reveal who is truly chosen by God.

“You say God sent you? God also sent me. Let’s see who Heaven supports and to what degree,” he said.

In what appeared to be a moment of reflection, Adom Kyei Duah also expressed some regret over past media affiliations.

“It’s unfortunate that early in my ministry, I associated myself with certain TV stations like Angel and Royal TV,” he remarked.

The tension between the prophet and the gospel artiste continues to generate widespread discussion online, with both parties standing firmly by their positions.

President John Dramani Mahama gives update on ORAL investigations President John Dramani Mahama gives update on ORAL investigations

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, is investigating thirty-three (33) corruption cases involving former government appointees, under Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).

The president made this disclosure during a meeting with the African Union Advisory Board against Corruption at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

President Mahama stated that the ORAL team’s findings have been handed over to the Attorney General, who has set up special investigative teams to probe each case.

“We set up the ORAL Committee to uncover corruption. It has identified 33 cases which was handed over to the Attorney General. So, he has created special investigative teams to investigate each of them,” he said.

He further noted that some cases have progressed to the prosecution stage with evidence of illicit wealth, including properties acquired through dubious means.

“In some cases, they have found evidence of procurement of properties with illicit wealth and all that. So, with many of them, they are just at the point of beginning prosecution while for others, they have started prosecution. There are still others lined up for prosecution,” President Mahama added.

The president has directed the Attorney General to pursue investigations into the cases outlined in the ORAL report, emphasising accountability and justice.

The ongoing investigations mark a significant step in the Mahama administration’s efforts to combat corruption and recover misappropriated public funds.

The ORAL team, an anti-corruption task force, was established following President Mahama’s victory in the 2024 elections.

It has been tasked with uncovering suspected corruption, particularly from the previous administration.

The five-member team, chaired by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, included former Auditor General Daniel Domelevo, retired Police Commissioner Nathaniel Kofi Boakye, legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, and investigative journalist Raymond Archer.

The team submitted its final report to the President on February 10, 2025, at the Jubilee House in Accra.

Energy minister speaks to consignment traced to Tema port

0

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has addressed critics of his ministry over missing ECG containers recently traced to the Ghana Ports and Habours Authority (GPHA) in Tema.

In an interview with 3News and monitored by GhanaWeb, on May 26, 2025, the Spokesperson and Head of Communications at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, confirmed that the containers were located at multiple terminals within the Tema Port.

The minister had earlier stated on multiple media platforms that 1,300 containers procured by the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) had reportedly gone missing under the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

He suggested possible lapses in the procurement processes at the electricity distribution company, while calling for accountability over the misuse of state resources.

Speaking before a parliamentary committee on June 3, 2025, Jinapor acknowledged that there was some controversy surrounding the missing containers, rejecting claim that his outfit employed semantics in recent report on same ‘missing’ ECG containers.

“Let’s assume that they were not missing. So, what is the issue? What matters is that we have accounted for every single container. That is the focus,” he stated.

He explained that a committee was set up to investigate the matter and they reported that 1,300 containers could not be located.

The minister insisted that his responsibility was to ensure all containers are found, describing the event as a top priority to him.

“I am not interested in playing with words. Semantics will not resolve the problem. What will resolve the problem is finding each and every container,” he said.

Jinapor also raised concerns about broader financial irregularities, accusing officials under the previous administration of gross mismanagement.

He cited a case where only GH₵900 million was approved for spending, whereas GH₵8.3 billion was reportedly expended over two years.

“Who slept on the job? There has been clear abuse and misuse of state resources. This cannot be allowed to slide,” he said.

He urged the committee to shift focus from the blame game and direct their attention to those responsible for the financial breaches.

He insisted that individuals found culpable in further probe will be held accountable.

“The minister should not be faulted for trying to locate the containers. That’s my job. More importantly, those responsible for the reckless dissipation of public funds must be held liable,” he stated.

Background

A special committee comprising representatives from National Security, the Ministry of Transport, the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority (GPHA), and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority traced the missing ECG containers to the GPHA in Tema.

According to the briefing on April 30, 2025, the containers were found at the following locations:

860 at Meridian Port Services

1,237 at GPHA Terminals

272 already evacuated by National Security

194 at Amaris Terminal

20 at ATLAS Manufacturing Terminal

The committee indicated that, further investigations revealed that 2,437 of the containers had exceeded the 60-day clearance period, resulting in significant demurrage charges.

Authorities are continuing efforts to address the backlog and prevent future lapses in the importation and clearance process.

Over 1,000 killed in road crashes between January and April – NRSA

0

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed that between January and April this year, over 4,700 road crashes were recorded, resulting in more than 1,000 deaths and 5,591 injuries.

This was disclosed during a stakeholder engagement with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), following an earlier unsuccessful attempt to hold the meeting on Thursday, May 29.

In a presentation at the engagement, NRSA Principal Manager, Dennis Yirebu highlighted a worrying trend – 13% increase in injuries, a 7% rise in pedestrian knockdowns, and a 6% uptick in collisions compared to previous periods.

“There have been 6% more collisions, and almost 7% more vehicles and pedestrians knocked down. We have also recorded a 13% increase in injuries,” he noted.

A key factor behind the surge in accidents, according to the NRSA, is the inadequate presence of road signs across the country.

To help address this, the Authority has directed all MMDAs in the Greater Accra Region to remove billboards placed on road medians, which it says are a major cause of road accidents due to their obstruction of drivers’ visibility.

Speaking at the engagement on the operationalisation of the NRSA Act and its regulations, NRSA Director-General, Abraham Amaliba clarified that the directive does not amount to a blanket removal of all billboards, but rather a targeted approach focused on road safety.

He further instructed the assemblies to establish and activate Road Safety Committees to enhance coordination and implementation of safety measures.

Star witness corroborates Adu-Boahene’s statement on disbursement of monies

0

Former Director of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene Former Director of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene

A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of the former Director of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, appears to have corroborated portions of a May 7, 2025, memo from the lawyers of the embattled NSB boss to the National Security Coordinator detailing operational expenditure of monies he and two others are being accused of allegedly misappropriating.

The prosecution witness, Edith Ruby Opokua Adumuah, who also doubles as the Director of Finance at the National Signals Bureau, in a witness statement dated June 2, 2025, said that she was indeed the custodian of all the cheque books of the bank accounts held by the bureau.

She further revealed that before any cheque payment was made on the main account, a request was made by the recipient unit through the head of administration, who then forwarded the request to the Director of BNC for approval after the necessary documents had been attached before certification by the internal audit unit for authorisation of payment.

Opokua Adumuah also said that the operational account of the BNC by standard procedure is managed by the Director of BNC (Kwabena Adu-Boahene) with the able supervision of the National Security Coordinator.

Indeed, lawyers for Adu-Boahene have persistently emphasised on the point that the Bureau of National Communications account functioned as a special operations account, while the BNC Communications Bureau account served as a special-purpose vehicle to carry out sensitive transactions.

Paragraph 8 of Opokua Adumuah’s statement actually said that before a cheque was signed on the operational account, Kwabena Adu-Boahene would always inform her either verbally or through a phone call before cheques were written.

She said that she would then forward it to both Adu-Boahene for his signature and to the National Security Coordinator, Joshua Kyeremeh.

In paragraph 14, witness Edith Ruby Opokua Adumuah confirmed that payments were indeed made to the Israeli company, ISC Holdings Limited, which delivered the cyber defense system for the National Signals Bureau.

“I know of ISC Holdings Limited. A1 (Kwabena Adu Boahene) gave me an invoice of Seven Million United States dollars (US$7,000,000.00) to transfer funds to ISC Holdings Limited. The invoice was dated September 1, 2020. BNC commenced paying for this invoice on October 15, 2020. We made payment to ISC Holding on the invoice from BNC’s ‘The Director BNC’ accountant at Fidelity Bank. I know that BNC paid as much as three million and one hundred and ten thousand united states dollars ($3,110,000.00) in respect of this invoice. I have copies of the invoice and the payments. I wish to tender them in evidence (INDEX EROA1). This transaction is from the transaction in respect of which A1, A2, A3 and A4 are being tried,” she said.

Her testimony brings to question the state’s claim that expenditure from the operational account of the National Signals Bureau, which is often clothed in secrecy, but subject to prior approval from the National Security Coordinator impugns wrongdoing on Kwabena Adu-Boahene and his wife.

It will be recalled that on a May 7, a leaked memo from Adu-Boahen detailed how some finances of the NSB were disbursed.

The document showed that GH₵8.3 million was disbursed in September 2024 to provide an unnamed opposition party with communications equipment for election collation, justified as ensuring “Stability of Nation/National Cohesion/Political Impartiality.”

The letter further indicated that GH₵960,000 was paid to the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament in 2020/2021 as “allowances” for enacting the National Signals Bureau Act, with an additional GH₵309,000 going to the Subsidiary Legislation Committee in 2024.

Election-related expenditures totaled over GH₵14 million, including GH₵7.2 million for the December 2020 polls and GH₵6.7 million for the December 2024 Election.

The documents also show GH₵5.1 million was spent on luxury vehicles (2024 Nissan Patrols and a Land Cruiser) for a “Special Aide to the President-Elect” in December 2024.

Let’s embrace positive lessons of June 4

0

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has called on Ghanaians to reflect on and embrace the positive lessons of the June 4 uprising, describing it as a pivotal moment in the country’s history.

Speaking at the 46th anniversary celebration of the June 4 uprising held at the Agormanya Lasi Park in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, Mr. Kwetey emphasised the importance of learning from the past to guide the nation toward a better future.

“Ghana must come to terms with June 4. It carried positive lessons, but also taught us how not to rush into certain actions. As the good book says, be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to act,” he said.

He urged members of the NDC and the wider public to rise above partisan interests and petty comparisons, and to focus on a broader national reset that transcends political divides.

“This is a clarion call, not just to point fingers at the NPP. It’s a call that tells the NDC not to lower the bar either,” Kwetey stated.

“We are no longer in normal times. The moment has come for Ghana to take off, and enough is enough if the two main political parties are not ready to rise to the level that is needed.”

Mr. Kwetey further noted that the lessons of June 4 should inspire a transformative national agenda that reflects the aspirations of all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation.

Stop discriminating musicians based on the type of music they make

Founder and leader of Heaven's Gate Ministry, Prophet Kumchacha, Founder and leader of Heaven’s Gate Ministry, Prophet Kumchacha,

Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha, has called on churches to stop discriminating against secular musicians simply because they do not sing gospel songs.

Speaking in an interview on Okay FM, Kumchacha argued that not all secular music is “worldly” and that many secular artistes produce meaningful, inspirational songs that align with moral values.

Kumchacha clarified that the Bible’s definition of “worldly” refers to songs promoting sin (fornication, drugs, violence), not all non-gospel music.

“We are all in this world. But what the Bible meant by ‘worldly’ is ‘senseless’ music that encourages immorality,” he said.

He praised legendary highlife musicians like Amakye Dede and KK Kabobo, saying their songs carry wisdom and positive messages.

“Their music is as good as gospel songs because it inspires and educates. We shouldn’t reject them,” he added.

He accused some churches of unfairly ostracising secular artistes while accepting others based on personal bias.

“Because you believe someone sings secular songs, you tag them as ‘worldly’ and reject them. That’s wrong,” he stated.

Kumchacha’s comments come amid ongoing debates in Ghana’s Christian community about collaborations between gospel and secular artistes and whether churches should support or shun non-gospel music.

‘Errand boy’ narrates how he allegedly delivered money in ‘big Ghana Must Go’ bags to Adu-Boahene

State witness corroborates Attorney-General Dominic Ayine's (L) claims against Kwabena Adu-Boahene State witness corroborates Attorney-General Dominic Ayine’s (L) claims against Kwabena Adu-Boahene

More details are emerging on the state’s case against Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), who is being prosecuted together with his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, and two others over the alleged transfer of GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to a private account.

One of the state’s witnesses, Frank Anane Dekpey, a supposed ‘errand boy’ of the Adu-Boahenes said in his witness statement how he used to deliver monies to the accused persons, who were all his church members.

Anane Dekpey claimed that the 3rd accused (A3), Mildred Boateng, used to send him to withdraw huge sums of money, which he delivered to Adu-Boahene (the first accused, A1) at his office.

“A3 often sends me to deposit or withdraw money at UMB Bank or Stanbic Bank to be given to A1. I usually send the money to A1 in his office near Metro TV in Labone. I used to collect money from the Labone branch of UMB Bank. I also make deposits and withdrawals from the Airport branch of Stanbic Bank on the instructions of A3. I either took the monies I withdrew from these banks to A1 or back to A3. I do not recall ever sending the monies I withdrew to A2.

“In many of the instances, the cheques which A3 gave were sealed in an envelope. She would then direct me to a specific member of the bank’s staff who got the cheques cashed. I usually went to the bank with big ‘Ghana Must Go’ bags. The exact amounts which I withdrew were never disclosed to me. Each time I went to the banks, the bank staff gave me a receipt to write my name, telephone number, and append my signature,” part of the witness statement reads.

Adu-Boahene and his wife:

The witness also stated that the 3rd accused had, on several occasions, sent him to make deposits into the bank account of Vertex Solutions, one of the companies that the Office of the Attorney General said was used in Adu-Boahene’s alleged fraudulent scheme.

“I know of a company called Vertex Solutions. I got to know this company because I have made several deposits into its Stanbic Bank account upon A3’s instructions. They always handed the pay-in slip to me. The pay-in slip had the name Vertex Solutions on it,” he added.

The Office of the Attorney General slapped Kwabena Adu-Boahene; his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng; their associate, Mildred Boateng; and a company jointly owned by Adu-Boahene and his wife, Advantage Solutions Limited, with 11 charges for allegedly transferring GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to his personal account.

EOCO boss Raymond Archer

On April 30, 2025, the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, stated that an investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) disclosed a sophisticated criminal scheme allegedly orchestrated by Adu-Boahene.

“I can now confirm that our investigations have concluded, and this is the exact amount Mr Adu-Boahene stole from taxpayers. Exercising my powers under Article 88 of the Constitution, I have filed charges against Mr Kwabena Adu-Boahene; his wife, Mrs Angela Ajay Boahene; Ms Mildred Donkor, a former UMB Bank employee who resigned to join the criminal enterprise; and Advantage Solutions Limited, a holding company owned by Mr Adu-Boahene and his wife, used as a conduit to funnel funds into other companies they own, namely, Vertex Properties Limited, Vertex Solutions, and BNC Communications Bureau Limited. The latter was the vehicle used to siphon GH¢49.1 million from National Security accounts,” the Attorney General said.

New ‘Dumsor Levy’ to pay for liquid fuel, not settle debts

0

John Jinapor is the Minister of Energy and Green Transition John Jinapor is the Minister of Energy and Green Transition

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has explained that the newly introduced Energy Sector Levy is not to pay the sector’s debts but instead to cater for liquid fuel.

According to him, the cost of the liquid fuel is not included in the electricity tariff structure, posing financing challenges to the government.

He also added that if the government decided to add this cost to electricity tariffs, the ordinary Ghanaian would be burdened.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM, he said, “Governance is about making decisions. It’s about optimising the situation and doing what we believe is the best decision. Nobody enjoys imposing taxes or levies on the people of Ghana.

“We’ve been working very hard since our time in office, but quickly, this is not actually to pay for legacy debt. What we are doing is that we’ve studied the system, we’ve done the analysis in the energy sector, and the basic truth and fact is that the liquid fuels that we buy currently are not part of the tariff structure. So, when you and I pay for electricity, even if ECG were to collect the money 100% today, none of that money would go into the procurement of liquid fuels.”

He noted that the government needs over $1 billion in 2025 alone to procure liquid fuels.

The minister added that this would have been averted if the government had increased gas consumption or production years ago.

“It takes, on average, about 18 months to 2 years to put a gas infrastructure in place. That is, even if you start today. And so this should have happened like yesterday. The finance minister has been helping a bit, though with much more difficulty in helping us to procure liquid fuels. So, what are the options available? Increase electricity tariffs, fall on the finance minister for non-existent money, or share the gains in the reduction of fuel prices,” he noted.

Jordan Ayew opens up on decision to leave Crystal Palace for Leicester City after relegation

Jordan Ayew's future with Leicester City is in doubt after club suffered relegation Jordan Ayew’s future with Leicester City is in doubt after club suffered relegation

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has revealed that his eagerness to play regular football contributed to his decision to depart from Crystal Palace for Leicester in the 2023/2024 season.

According to him, there was a moment he realised that he had given his best to the club in terms of performances and felt the need to give young players a chance to exhibit their talent.

He also indicated that the lack of playing time in some matches prompted him to explore his options instead of staying on the bench and becoming rusty.

Jordan Ayew emphasised that his ambition to remain competitive and keep playing at the highest level made him join Leicester City.

“When you’re a player, you feel like you’re giving everything to the club, and maybe you can’t do more. But like I said, when you know the club is in a good position and it’s in a safe place, young ones behind you are doing their job.

“You have to take it easy; you don’t want to just hang around. But because I’m competitive and I need to play, that’s why I just made the move,” he said, as shared by Joy Sports on X.

Ayew signed a two-year contract with Leicester City from Crystal Palace in a deal worth an initial £5m.

He is yet to decide his future at Leicester City following the club’s relegation from the English Premier League.

Ayew, who joined the Foxes from Crystal Palace in August 2023 endured a challenging debut season under Dutch manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, making 36 appearances and scoring six goals.

Despite individual flashes of brilliance, Leicester managed just six wins all season, sealing their second top-flight relegation in three years.

New Fuel Levy in Ghana: A solution to energy woes or a blow to citizens?

0

The government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Finance, has introduced the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Bill, proposing a 1 cedi levy on every litre of petroleum product sold in the country. This bold fiscal intervention is aimed at stabilising Ghana’s ailing energy sector, with the funds expected to offset power sector debts, support infrastructure maintenance, and ensure continuous electricity supply.

However, the announcement has sparked heated national conversation. Citizens, economists, and energy experts are weighing the bill’s potential benefits against the immediate impact on household budgets and the already-burdened cost of living. Can this policy deliver the relief it promises, or will it deepen existing economic struggles?

What the Government Hopes to Achieve

Ghana’s energy sector is reeling from decades of underfunding, inefficiencies, and mounting debts, particularly to independent power producers (IPPs) and fuel suppliers. Power outages have become a recurring menace, hurting small businesses and undermining investor confidence.

The Finance Minister maintains that the new levy will generate dedicated revenue to address these systemic financial gaps and avoid further deterioration of electricity supply reliability. According to him, ‘stabilising the energy sector is critical to economic growth, job creation, and industrial expansion.’

Possible Gains from the Levy

  1. A Lifeline for the Power Sector

The levy could inject much-needed funds into clearing legacy debts, enhancing the financial health of utility providers, and facilitating uninterrupted power generation and distribution.

  1. Sustainable Energy Investment

Over time, the revenue could be channelled into renewable energy development and critical grid upgrades, positioning Ghana as a leader in West Africa’s energy transition.

  1. Economic Productivity

A more reliable electricity supply could stimulate local manufacturing and reduce the cost of doing business, especially for SMEs affected by frequent blackouts and the high cost of generator use.

But at What Cost to Citizens?

  1. Fuel Price Hikes & Inflation

An additional 1 cedi per litre will almost certainly push up fuel prices. This increase will ripple across sectors — transport, agriculture, and commerce — raising the cost of goods and services.

  1. Hardship for the Poor and Working Class

Fuel levies are inherently regressive. Lower-income households, who spend a larger portion of their earnings on transport and food, will feel the pinch more acutely than affluent citizens.

  1. Trust Deficit from Past Levies

Public scepticism is high, given past energy-related levies such as the Energy Debt Recovery Levy, Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy, and the Public Lighting Levy — all introduced under the Energy Sector Levies Act, 2015 (Act 899). These levies were designed to address sector inefficiencies, clear debts, and stabilise energy prices. However, reports of mismanagement and lack of transparency have eroded public trust.

  1. Lack of Transparency and Oversight

Critics fear the new revenue stream could be mismanaged or diverted from its intended purpose, as has occurred in the past due to weak institutional oversight and political interference.

Policy Recommendations for Balance

If implemented, the following measures can improve public buy-in and ensure the policy’s long-term success:

Phase Out Obsolete Levies: The government should review and rationalise older levies to reduce the cumulative tax burden on fuel products.

Ring-Fence the Funds: The new levy should be placed in a special account with public disclosure on disbursement and impact metrics.

Protect the Poor: Introduce targeted interventions, such as transport subsidies for low-income earners, to cushion the economic blow.

Set a Time Limit: The levy should include a sunset clause with periodic performance reviews and a clear end goal.

Final Thoughts

The Energy Sector Levy Amendment Bill represents a high-stakes balancing act for Ghana’s government. On the one hand, stabilising the power sector is indispensable for economic resilience and long-term growth. On the other hand, the levy’s regressive nature and timing, amid high inflation and job insecurity, could deepen public discontent.

Ultimately, the success of this policy will hinge on transparency, accountability, and the political will to use the proceeds solely for their intended purpose. Ghana’s energy future must not come at the expense of today’s vulnerable citizens.

Results Declaration: Minority Caucus marches to police headquarters, demands security for EC

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, June 04, GNA-Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament on Wednesday embarked on a peace march to the Ghana Police Service Headquarters, demanding that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) provides maximum security to the Electoral Commission.

That, they said, would facilitate the declaration of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election results.

The march that started at 1100 hours from Parliament House and proceeded along Gamel Abdul Street to the Police Headquarters, had the Members of Parliament (MPs) chanting patriotic songs and the party’s anthem.

Minority Chief Whip Mr. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who presented the petition to COP Daniel Afriyie on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), urged the police to ensure the Electoral Commissions’ (EC’s) safety during the collation and declaration process.

“The entire caucus is here to present a petition to the Inspector General of Police (IGP). We are hoping they will do the needful because the EC, out of frustration, has said that they need security, and we are hoping that the IGP should be able to offer security.

“The NPP Minority Caucus’ petition to the IGP highlights the growing concerns over the delayed declaration of results and the potential implications for the constituency’s representation in Parliament,” Mr. Annoh-Dompreh said.

The Ablekuma North Constituency has been without a representative in Parliament since the 2024 General Elections due to an alleged chaotic collation process.

As a result, the EC has requested police security to enable them to continue the collation and declaration process.
