Things are moving in the right direction between South Africa and Ghana

South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner to Ghana, Thando Dalamba South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner to Ghana, Thando Dalamba

South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner to Ghana, Thando Dalamba, says trade relations between the two nations are steadily improving, with both governments committed to deepening economic cooperation across key sectors.

He made the remarks at the Global South Africans Business Luncheon held in Accra on November 20, 2025, an engagement jointly organised by Brand South Africa, the South African High Commission and the Ghana–South Africa Business Chamber to strengthen diaspora ties and promote trade and investment across the continent.

According to Dalamba, bilateral trade has grown from 14 billion South African rand in 2020 to 18 billion rand (approximately USD 1 billion) in 2024, signalling progress though not at the level both countries aspire to reach.

He explained that trade matters are guided by the Binational Commission, which met in South Africa in March 2024 to address challenges and identify growth opportunities. The next session is expected to be hosted in Ghana in 2026.

“We are positive that things are moving in the right direction between the two countries,” he stressed.

Fact Check: Ghana did not overtake South Africa as Africa’s top gold producer this year

Dalamba highlighted mining, agriculture, agribusiness, hospitality, retail and real estate as core sectors driving bilateral cooperation.

He emphasised the Ghana–South Africa Business Chamber’s role in supporting private-sector partnerships, noting that despite a few “hiccups,” most challenges can be resolved through ongoing dialogue.

On the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), he expressed optimism but urged greater public communication from the AfCFTA Secretariat to ensure businesses fully understand the regime’s benefits.

He referenced a South African shipment to Ghana under AfCFTA rules as evidence that the agreement is operational, though more awareness is needed.

Head of the Diaspora Desk at the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Nadia Okudzeto speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer

Simon Madjie

, underscored Ghana’s shift toward recognising the diaspora as a strategic engine for growth.

She revealed that GIPC has developed a Diaspora Engagement Policy, a Diaspora Desk and the Investment Opportunity Mapping Project, which highlights investment-ready prospects across the country.

“Every nation is recognising the potential of the diaspora, we want to ensure that the great work you’re doing is captured and supported.”

Brand South Africa’s General Manager for Global Markets, Jimmy Ranamane, echoed the need for deeper people-to-people engagement, explaining that trade thrives when human connections are strong.

“Before you can even think of trade, you need to have that human interaction,” he noted.

Ranamane also emphasised that the delegation’s presence in Ghana forms part of efforts to amplify South Africa’s G20 message of solidarity, equality and sustainability across the continent.

The solo mixed-media exhibition, featured the works of Ghanaian artist Claudia George The solo mixed-media exhibition, featured the works of Ghanaian artist Claudia George

The National Museum of Ghana was abuzz with excitement on Thursday, November 13, 2025, as it hosted the private viewing of the visual arts exhibition “The Meridian Life Affair.”

The solo mixed-media exhibition, featuring the works of Ghanaian artist Claudia George, also known as Zinski, stands as a testament to the country’s rich cultural heritage and the resilience of its people.

Claudia, a proud daughter of Ghana, has assembled a diverse collection of artworks that highlight the country’s traditions, myths and folklore. Her use of batik, silk and textile-decoration techniques results in a visually stunning display that is both captivating and thought-provoking.

“I wanted to attract people who’ve never been to an exhibition or a museum before, to try and make contact or connect with that field of work,” Claudia explained in an interview.

“I want to raise awareness of the various aspects of creativity and maybe start conversations about it, prompting people to reflect on some of the things they see.”

Her motivation for the exhibition stems from a desire to give back to her country and share her creative gifts with the world. Having spent time in the diaspora, she was inspired by African diasporic culture and its deep connections to Ghana.

“I wanted to bring some of that home,” she said. “I wanted to look at the African side of it within that mythology, African mythology discussions and explore the relationships or links between our stories.”

The exhibition features a range of artworks, including masquerade costume designs, performative pieces and mixed-media installations.

Claudia’s use of recycled materials and traditional techniques underscores the ingenuity and creativity of Ghanaian artists.

The exhibition also emphasizes the importance of literacy and language in promoting Ghanaian culture. Claudia believes the English language can serve as a tool to explain and showcase the country’s deep cultural heritage.

“We need to use it to explain the things we produce from a common-word point of view,” she said. “If we understand how important literacy is, then we can sell our products, and we can sell our skills to the world.”

The event was attended by high-profile dignitaries, including representatives from the Office of Diaspora Affairs, the British Council, and the Osu Alata Mantse.

They took the opportunity to thank the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and its staff for hosting this catalytic event.

George Anorchie, Principal Curator at the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), expressed gratitude to Madam Claudia George, saying, “We are honored to host this exceptional exhibition, which showcases the best of Ghanaian art and culture. We believe that ‘The Meridian Life Affair’ will inspire a new generation of artists and art enthusiasts, and we remain committed to providing platforms for Ghanaian artists to showcase their talents.”

No proxy voting in 2026 NPP presidential primaries – Election Committee reaffirms ban

0

The decision was confirmed after a closed-door meeting between the party’s Presidential Election Committee and all aspirants in Accra.

Chairman Joseph Osei Owusu said the committee carefully considered concerns raised about the ban but concluded that allowing proxy votes could compromise the transparency and credibility of the election.

“We’ve read the petitions presented by sections of the party. And after listening to all that, we came to a conclusion that for the sake of conducting an election that is incident-free, an election that is respected, an election in which it’s accessible to all, a very credible election, that provision or that ban should be maintained,” Osei Owusu told journalists.

“We will still not have proxy voting in the 2026 presidential primaries.”

Under this directive, all registered delegates must be physically present at their designated polling centres to cast their votes.

To enhance transparency, the committee provided each aspirant with soft copies of the provisional voters’ register.

Osei Owusu urged candidates to carefully review the document and submit any corrections through the official channels before it is publicly displayed at the constituencies.

The issue of proxy voting had resurfaced after some members argued that the ban could disenfranchise delegates who might be away on official duties, ill, or otherwise unable to attend on election day.

However, the committee maintained that physical presence is crucial for a credible and incident-free election.

Osei Owusu described the meeting as productive and peaceful, emphasizing the committee’s commitment to ensuring a transparent electoral process in the lead-up to the 2026 NPP presidential primary.

Savelugu MP raises concern over continued underfunding of social protection in 2026 budget

Member of Parliament for Savelugu, Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz Member of Parliament for Savelugu, Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz

The Member of Parliament for Savelugu, Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz, has raised strong concerns over what she describes as the persistent and troubling underfunding of Ghana’s social protection programmes, warning that the 2026 Budget and Economic Policy fails to safeguard the country’s most vulnerable citizens.

Debating the principles of the 2026 Budget on Thursday, November 20, 2025, the Savelugu legislator criticised the government for what she called a “profound disconnect between policy commitments and actual funding,” arguing that critical welfare interventions continue to be deprioritised at a time when economic hardships are deepening.

According to the MP, allocations to social protection programmes—including LEAP, the Ghana School Feeding Programme, and related transfers—amount to GH¢3.46 billion, representing only 0.22 percent of GDP, far below international benchmarks for developing countries.

“This is not simply a budgetary shortfall; it is a reflection of misplaced priorities,” she said.

“At a time when poverty and vulnerability are worsening across communities, especially among women, children, and persons with disabilities, this budget fails to deliver meaningful protection.”

She noted that the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection responsible for most of the country’s welfare interventions—remains severely under-resourced, receiving only 1.1 percent of total government expenditure for 2026.

Capital expenditure for the Ministry stands at GH¢11.6 million, just 0.36 percent of its allocation, a situation she warned would hinder the expansion and upgrading of welfare offices, digital systems, shelters, and rescue centres.

Abdul Aziz also expressed alarm over drastic cuts to two key protection mechanisms: the Domestic Violence Fund and the Child Trafficking Fund. Each receives only GH¢1 million in the 2026 Budget, down from GH¢2.7 million and GH¢2.1 million respectively in 2024.

“These cuts are not only unjustified but dangerous,” she stressed.

“Such minimal allocations cannot support shelters, psychosocial services, rescue operations, or rehabilitation for survivors of violence and trafficking. At a time when these cases are rising, our budget must respond—not retreat.”

She further criticised the absence of specific budget lines for programmes such as the Sanitary Pad Initiative and Women in Trade, arguing that without clear allocations, Parliament cannot track funds or demand accountability from implementing agencies.

“A promise without a price tag is merely a public relations exercise,” she said.

The MP also highlighted what she termed “new neglects” in the 2026 Budget, citing the lack of gender-responsive targeting in major flagship initiatives such as the 24-Hour Economy and infrastructure programmes.

She argued that failing to intentionally include women risks widening the existing economic gap.

For rural women farmers, especially in areas like Savelugu, she noted that the budget provides little support in the areas of climate-resilient inputs, financial inclusion, and livelihoods programmes.

Abdul Aziz concluded with a call for the government to reprioritise its spending.

“A budget is the clearest expression of a government’s priorities,” she said.

“Ghanaians, particularly the vulnerable, cannot thrive on promises. They require actual, targeted investments and accountable implementation to build resilience and improve well-being.”

Parliament continues to debate the 2026 Budget and Economic Policy, with social protection emerging as one of the most critical concerns raised by lawmakers.

On Thursday, November 20, 2025, rumours emerged that a DNA test had been conducted, which proved that the late Samuel Aboagye was the biological father of his daughter with Abigail.

The family of the late Obuasi East NDC parliamentary candidate has been embroiled in a dispute since the politician’s tragic demise in the August 6 helicopter crash.

On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, reports emerged that the late Samuel Aboagye’s family had sued the deceased’s US-based wife, Abigail Salami, in the Obuasi District Court.

Samuel Aboagye’s widow, family battle over DNA

According to Angel 96.1 FM’s court correspondent, the dispute between the late Samuel Aboagye’s family and his widow stemmed from a disagreement over a DNA test for the deceased’s daughter.

The reporter noted that the issues arose after the government requested DNA samples from immediate family members to identify the remains of the helicopter crash victims before they were flown to South Africa for testing.

Reports also indicated that Samuel Aboagye’s wife repeatedly refused to allow the government to conduct the DNA test on her young daughter.

A DNA sample was later taken from another relative to help the authorities with the identification of the remains.

The late Samuel Aboagye’s family has also accused his widow, Abigail, of allegedly engaging in a secret romantic relationship with a prominent MP before and after his demise.

They also levelled other allegations against the late politician’s widow. Other reports indicated that Abigail Salami had also filed a case at the court, calling on them to block the family’s attempt to obtain a DNA test.

How ‘Dumsor’ disrupted hearing on Daddy Lumba’s case

0

Intermittent power outages disrupted hearing at the Kumasi High Court in the case in which Akosua Serwaa Fosuh is seeking relief as the legal wife of the late popular highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, known in showbiz as Daddy Lumba.

Proceedings were disrupted twice as counsel for Serwaa Fosuh cross-examined the head of the Ekuona family at Parkoso, who also doubles as the first defendant in the case.

Akosua Serwaa Fosuh is petitioning the High Court to declare her the only surviving legal wife of the late musician and entitled to perform widowhood rites, and an order to restrain Priscila Ofori, also known as Odo Broni, who has six children with the late Daddy Lumba, from presenting herself as the wife of the late musician.

But Friday’s hearing was marred by the intermittent power outages as proceedings were halted twice within an interval of 20 minutes.

The first light out hit the court at 14:49 p.m. as William Kusi, counsel for Serwaa Fosuh cross-examined Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu, head of Daddy Lumba’s extended family at Parkoso in Kumasi.

The development compelled the trial judge, Justice Dorinda Smith-Arthur, to exclaim, “My goodness! Did you save it?” Her worry stems from the fact that court records were at stake. Computers used to record court proceedings had gone off while court recorders were busily typing proceedings in court.

After more than 15 minutes of waiting with no sign of power being restored, the presiding judge was compelled to adjourn the hearing.

Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu’s mouth was consequently sealed for the hearing to be adjourned to Monday, November 24.

Three minutes after proceedings had ended, and the trial judge had retired into her chambers, power was restored, at 15: 08.

Just as Justice Dorinda Smith-Arthur returned to the courtroom for proceedings to resume, power went out again at 15:10, much to the discomfort of judicial service staff, journalists covering proceedings, plaintiff, lawyers as well as witnesses and relatives of Daddy Lumba.

Minority confused over ‘impressive’ figures – Asutifi North MP

0

Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has criticised the Minority Caucus for what he describes as a confused and politically motivated posture on the 2026 Budget.

He argued that the economic indicators presented by the government demonstrate clear progress, contrary to the minority’s claims that the budget is “empty.”

Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Friday November 21, the MP said the opposition’s criticism had little grounding in the realities captured in the fiscal document.

“It is an interesting one, and I think the minority is confused looking at the figures and indicators this NDC government has chalked over the few months. I think it is something we have to commend the government. I don’t agree with the minority,” he said.

According to him, the current Minority has failed to demonstrate sincerity in its assessment of the budget.

“They describing the budget as empty, I think it is quite unfortunate because the figures speak for themselves,” he added.

The debate on the 2026 budget is expected to intensify in the coming days as both sides of the House continue to scrutinise the government’s economic projections and policy priorities.

Blue Water Guards destroy five changfan machines

0

The Bogoso Blue Water Guards have issued a strong warning to illegal miners (galamseyers) operating along rivers in the Prestea-Huni-Valley Municipality after destroying five changfan machines on the River Ankobra at Tarkwa Bremang in the Western Region.

The enforcement operation, which took place on Friday, November 21, 2025, forms part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining activities that continue to degrade water bodies and threaten local ecosystems.

Allan Acheampong, Commander for Bogoso Blue Water Guards, who led the exercise, cautioned individuals engaged in illegal river mining to desist from the practice, stressing that the group remains committed to protecting critical water resources.

“You can’t even get a single fish from the river due to the activities of galamsey. We have set five changfan machines ablaze. We are warning all those mining on the river to stop,” Acheampong said, adding that the destruction of the equipment serves as a clear message that illegal activities on the water bodies will not be tolerated.

He also appealed to authorities to support the team with additional logistics, including life jackets and speed boats, to enhance the safety and effectiveness of future operations.

The River Ankobra has, in recent years, been heavily impacted by illegal mining, prompting intensified monitoring and community-led patrols to address the environmental damage.

Ghana’s push toward a 24-hour economy will rely heavily on the country’s rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, according to Corey Johnson, CEO of OnPoint Virtual Assistants.

Speaking at the launch of a new AI and automation pilot training program in Accra, Johnson said Ghana’s economic ambitions “will rise or fall on efficiency, and efficiency today is impossible without AI.”

The American-Ghanaian entrepreneur emphasised that private sector leadership, not government alone, will determine how quickly Ghana catches up with global technological trends.

“AI is not going anywhere; it’s here to stay. It’s up to individuals to catch up. It’s up to private businesses to catch up, to stay up to speed. And also for the government, when you look at the 24-hour initiative, you’re definitely going to need AI to be efficient,” he said.

“Because efficiency leads to productivity, which allows the economy to grow faster. The more efficient and proficient one is, the better off you’ll be in terms of growing the economy and advancing the 24-hour mandate by the president,” he added.

The event marked the launch of Ghana’s first AI and automation training pilot program, a partnership between Mobi9Tech Digital Agency and OnPoint Virtual Assistants.

The 12-week program will certify three Ghanaian trainees in GoHighLevel and Make.com, opening pathways to global remote work opportunities.

Johnson said the decision to start small was intentional.

“Three is the right number for a test run. We want to refine the system, monitor progress, and position them for international jobs immediately after they complete the program,” he noted.

The coordinators, young graduates who previously completed national service, already assist in managing 100–200 clients daily through OnPoint’s non-emergency medical transport business in the U.S.

“They are hardworking, adaptable, and they understand AI because they grew up in a digital world,” Johnson added.

When asked how fast Ghana can catch up to global AI adoption, Johnson replied, “Ghana can catch up as fast as Ghana wants. It depends on how quickly individuals and private businesses are willing to learn. AI is the future of economic survival; whether we adapt now or later determines our competitiveness.”

He stressed that young people with “trainable, ready minds” are Ghana’s biggest opportunity.

“If Ghana wants to compete in a 24-hour economy, or any global economy, AI must be at the center. And we’re helping build the workforce that will make that possible,” Corey Johnson concluded.

Janine Coogler-Hudson, CEO of Mobi9Tech, said the partnership is designed as an economic intervention, not just a training program.

“We’re giving Ghanaian youth the exact certifications that earn $40,000 to $80,000 globally,” she explained. “This is economic transformation. Our graduates can compete internationally from day one.”

Hudson compared today’s AI moment to the early dot-com boom, saying, “The people who took the internet seriously in the early 2000s became industry leaders. AI is at that same starting point today, and we’re preparing Ghanaian youth to lead, not follow.”

Unlike typical online AI courses, which have completion rates below 10%, the hybrid model combines self-paced online work with weekly live instructor sessions.

“Life happens. People lose motivation. But when you add accountability, mentorship, and community, they finish,” Hudson said.

Pastor Isaac Forson and his daughter have been embroiled in a bitter public feud since the pastor’s wife, Reverend Evelyn Forson, died in 2022.

Abigail alleges that her mother told her before she died that Pastor Forson poisoned her, a claim she alleges has been proved by the post-mortem conducted on the late Mrs Forson.

After her mother’s death, Abigail Forson reported her father to the Kumasi Central Police Command, but has yet to receive any help. She also dragged him to Auntie Naa on Oyerepa FM, bringing their feud to the public domain but still yielding no results.

“Government leaders should step in and ensure my mother gets justice. My father killed my mother and is now making my life miserable when I have done nothing to him,” Abigail said following her release.

“I beg you, my mother accused my father of killing her with poison, and we’ve conducted a post-mortem that confirms it. I’m pleading with the government to ensure this gets to the courts so we can get justice for my mother,” she added.

Abigail Forson speaks about arrest

Abigail Forson’s third arrest on November 20, 2025, followed a complaint from her father to the police in Ampabame in the Atwima Kwanoma District of the Ashanti Region.

In a video seen by YEN.com.gh, Abigail said her father accused her of breaking into a shop owned by her late mother and stealing goods worth GH₵ 90,000.

Abigail denied the accusations and said they were fabricated by her father in an attempt to intimidate her.

“He said if I don’t withdraw the case against him at the Central Police Station, he would give me no peace. He claims that two months ago, I broke into the store and stole items. Meanwhile, this is a store belonging to my late mother.

“We gave out goods to some traders some months back to sell, and we both estimated the value of the goods to be GH₵ 9,000. However, he has gone to tell the police that I’ve stolen items worth GH₵ 250,000, which is not true.” she said.

Abigail Forson said her father has fabricated separate charges against her in the past, leading to her being arrested three times in the three years since her mother’s death.

Many Ghanaians reacted to Abigail’s plea with outrage, slamming the Ghana Police for not seeking justice for the late Mrs Forson.

NPP proxy voting ban sets ‘dangerous precedent’ – Adjei-Mensah Korsah warns

Martin Agyei Mensah-Korsah

Member of Parliament for Techiman South, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s Presidential Election Committee (PEC) for its decision to ban proxy voting in the upcoming NPP presidential primary.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s show, Mr. Adjei-Mensah Korsah said that although he respects the competence of the committee chairman, Joseph Osei-Owusu (Joe Wise), the decision is legally flawed and harmful to the party’s democratic traditions.

“I like the chairman and his leadership prowess, but he is wrong on this issue. The committee has done a great disservice to the party by taking such a hard stance. It is a dangerous precedent and could deepen the party’s problems,” he said.

He argued that proxy voting is recognised under Ghana’s electoral laws and is administered by the Electoral Commission—not political parties.

“Even during general elections, someone who is incapacitated can get help to vote. It is almost the same as proxy voting,” he explained, adding that the NPP should not attempt to override established legal principles.

Mr. Adjei-Mensah Korsah warned that banning proxy voting creates unnecessary mistrust and confusion, stressing that the party must prioritise transparency and fairness.

“There is no issue with proxy voting. No one can use it to rig an election. It’s just a misunderstanding. They should have opened up the process and addressed it once and for all,” he added.

MASLOC debunks claims of six-month salary arrears

0

The Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) has refuted social media claims alleging that the organisation owes its staff six months’ salary arrears.

In a public statement issued on Friday, November 21, 2025, MASLOC described the allegation — contained in a Facebook post — as “inaccurate and misleading.”

According to the statement, no such situation exists within the organisation, and the narrative being circulated does not reflect the reality on the ground.

MASLOC noted that it maintains regular engagement with its staff on all operational matters and insisted that there is no basis for the claims being made.

Management, therefore, urged the public to disregard the publication.

Two suspected armed robbers lynched after killing 19-year-old Okada rider at Awutu Mampong

0

A 19-year-old commercial motorbike rider, Kofi Mensah, has been shot and killed, allegedly by armed robbers at Awutu Mampong in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.

The two suspects were later apprehended and reportedly lynched by angry residents and fellow Okada riders.

Kofi Mensah, who had recently completed Senior High School, was working as an Okada rider to save for further education.

According to sources, the suspects hired him for a trip from Awutu Mampong to Agona Mankrong. About five minutes into the journey, one of the men asked Kofi to stop, claiming he needed to urinate.

When he complied, the suspects demanded the keys to his motorbike, threatening to kill him if he refused. Despite Kofi offering his mobile phone and the day’s earnings, explaining that the motorbike was part of a “work and pay” arrangement, the assailants allegedly shot him.

Assemblyman for the Agona Asafo Electoral Area, Ishmael Odoom, told Adom News that after shooting Kofi, the men broke his neck, tied his hands with a rope, and fled with the motorbike.

A passing Okada rider soon discovered Kofi’s body by the roadside and alerted colleagues. A search party quickly apprehended the two suspects at Agona Osedu.

According to Assemblyman Odoom, news of the murder sparked outrage among residents and Okada riders, who attacked and reportedly killed the suspects on the spot.

The bodies of Kofi Mensah and the two suspects have been conveyed to the Agona Swedru Police Hospital morgue as investigations continue.

Assemblyman Odoom has urged Okada riders to exercise caution to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Ghana Police Service calls for reinstatement of press soirée

0

IGP Yohuno in a hearty hug with GJA President Mr Albert Dwumfuor.

The Ghana Police Service has urged its leadership to reinstate the annual police–media press soirée as part of efforts to improve communication and deepen collaboration with journalists.

The call was made during a stakeholder engagement organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), which brought together media practitioners, security agencies, and civil society groups to deliberate on press freedom and the safety of journalists in Ghana.

Police Commander for the Zenu-Atadeka District, Superintendent Commander Oliver Turkson, said the press soirée traditionally served as an important accountability platform where journalists and police leadership could assess their work over the past year. It provided space, she noted, for open dialogue on operational challenges, achievements, and areas for improvement.

“For instance, the challenges, the progress made. The press soirée gives a forum for a constructive conversation and helps map out a clear way forward to strengthen our relationship,” she said.

She explained that reviving the event would help rebuild trust, enhance transparency, and make it easier for journalists to access accurate and timely information – particularly during crisis situations where clarity from the police is essential.

Journalists at the forum welcomed the proposal but also appealed to the police for quicker responses, more proactive communication, and improved access to public information.

The General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Dominic Hlordzi, used the platform to reiterate calls on government to ensure that all security agencies uphold the law when journalists are attacked. He emphasised the need for consistent and decisive action to protect media workers.

“We need government to speak with the police, the military, the courts, and every institution under its authority to ensure that when a journalist is attacked, we walk the full haul to secure closure on their cases,” he said.

During the discussions, both sides acknowledged that tensions sometimes arise between journalists and security officers. Media practitioners cited delays in police communication, while the police expressed concern about instances where reporters publish unverified or premature details.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to develop clearer communication guidelines and strengthen cooperation to ensure safer and more effective working relations between the police and the media.

Minority accuses government of blocking Anti-LGBTQ Bill

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, Nov. 21, GNA- The New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed disappointment and frustration over the alleged delay in reintroducing the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-LGBTQ bill.

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the lead sponsor of the bill, stated on Friday on the Floor of the House that it had been five weeks since Mr Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, assured the House that the bill was undergoing final fine-tuning, yet it had not been brought back for consideration.

“The Speaker declared that it should be on the order paper, but this attempt by the government to block the bill from being featured is a big disappointment to the people of this country,” he said.

“Mr Speaker, we demand that if it was an oversight or error, it must be corrected, and the bill be added to the order paper so that it will be laid and presented for first reading,” he added.

In his reaction, Mr Yusif Sulemana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Bole Bamboi, referenced former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for failing to fulfill the responsibility of signing the bill when passed in the Eighth Parliament.

He urged against politicizing the issue saying, “I am confident that the President, John Dramani Mahama, will sign the bill once it’s ready,” he said.

However, Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, dismissed the claims and assured the House that the government had no intention of obstructing the bill’s reintroduction and was committed to ensuring its passage.

The bill, which aims to criminalise same-sex relationships and restrict LGBTQ activities, has sparked intense debate and criticism from human rights groups, who argue it violates fundamental human rights and could harm Ghana’s global image.

Abu Jinapor outlines 5 reasons why Bawumia remains the best man for NPP

0

Member of Parliament for Damongo and former lands and natural resources Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor has made a compelling case for the retention of former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 election.

In an interview with Paul Adom Otchere on Good Evening Ghana on Thursday, November 20, 2025, the MP said he decided to remain supportive of Dr Bawumia’s candidature after a careful assessment of the situation the NPP finds itself in, as well as messages of all the aspirants.

NPP Primaries: Dr Bawumia receives widespread endorsements in Central Region

“I have listened carefully to each one of the Presidential candidates. They are people I know very well at the personal level, and I have listened to all of them carefully, and I have not been convinced as to why we should not present Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. I don’t have any credible and compelling reason why we should change Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” he said.

He then gave a number of reasons why he believes Dr Bawumia is the best person to lead the NPP to victory in 2028, urging the party to rally behind him, just as both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and NPP did for the late Prof Mills, Nana Akufo-Addo and John Dramani Mahama.

“He is well marketed, he is formidable, he is credible, he is somebody you cannot associate with anything corruption or incompetence.”

“And I believe that if we present him again for 2028 and we rally behind him, I believe he has a very great, strong chance of winning the 2028 elections,” Abu Jinapor added, reiterating his belief that the NPP will elect him as its presidential candidate.

22 out of 25 Assin South electoral area coordinators declare support for Dr Bawumia

“I am convinced that the party will support him come January 31, 2026, and I am convinced that the party will elect him because the party wants to win the 2028 election.”

“And I am convinced and that is the sentiment within the party that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is the man who is the most formidable, the most marketed, a string candidate and has a national appeal. We have taken him once and if take him again and rally behind him in 2028, I believe that by the grace of the Almighty God, the Ghanaian people will have favour with us and elect him as President of Ghana come 2029.”

Jinapor’s final reason was history, adding that over the years, both the NPP and the NDC have consistently backed presidential candidates over and over until they emerged Presidents.

He cited John Evans Atta Mills, Nana Akufo-Addo and President Mahama, who were all presented a number of times before they eventually won.

‘Dumsor’ disrupts hearing on Daddy Lumba’s case

Ghana must stop sentimental lithium debate, focus on reality

0

Policy Analyst and Natural Resource Governance Expert, Dr Steve Manteaw, has cautioned Ghanaians against overstating the economic significance of lithium compared to the country’s gold sector, describing the political debate over the revised Atlantic Lithium agreement as overly sentimental and potentially harmful to investment confidence.

Speaking on Joy News, Dr Manteaw commented on the revised lithium deal, recently resubmitted to Parliament for ratification by Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah. He highlighted that while lithium prices have fallen sharply from about $3,000 to $850 per ton globally, the debate over the fiscal terms of the agreement should not be driven by politics or emotion.

“We are happy to take 5% royalty for gold, which generates billions for the country, yet condemn 10% royalty for lithium, whose value is nowhere near that of gold. This is driven more by sentiment than by objective assessment,” he said.

Dr Manteaw emphasised that Ghana’s gold sector continues to produce significantly higher revenues. Last year alone, gold brought in more than $2 billion, and rising prices could push this figure above $3 billion. In contrast, even Zimbabwe, Africa’s leading lithium producer, earns a maximum of about $400 million annually from lithium.

He argued that focusing on lithium as a “last hope” for transforming Ghana’s economy is misplaced. “God blessed this country with gold. We’ve produced it for over 100 years, yet the sector has not fundamentally changed our economic trajectory. If gold couldn’t transform Ghana, lithium alone will not do it,” he said.

Dr Manteaw also warned that the political back-and-forth over the lithium deal sends the wrong signal to international investors. Delays in ratification, compounded by fiscal disputes, risk portraying Ghana as a hostile investment environment at a time when financing is critical for both exploration and local development.

“If investors cannot proceed with their projects due to political interference, how will they repay loans or invest in local communities? The international community is watching,” he added.

While acknowledging that those pushing for higher lithium royalties are well-intentioned, he insisted the conversation should be grounded in data and science, not political competition. He also noted that the NPP is right to want to pay back the NDC in their own coin, but it’s the nation that suffers.

“Can we look forward and consider what is in the best interest of Ghana? You cannot maintain the fiscal regime that was negotiated by the previous government, because of the collapse of lithium prices.”

Dr Manteaw urged Ghanaian policymakers to adopt a pragmatic approach, adjusting the fiscal terms to make lithium projects viable while learning lessons from gold management, including the need for structured revenue frameworks, stabilisation funds, and careful environmental oversight.

FG names 2Face Idibia national fire safety ambassador

0

ABUJA: The Federal Government has named music icon and humanitarian, Innocent “2Face” Idibia, as its National Fire Safety Ambassador, tasking him with championing behavioural change and driving a new wave of public awareness on preventive safety across the country.

The appointment was announced on Friday in Abuja by the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Samuel Adeyemi, during the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Fire Safety Week, held at the Service’s Headquarters.

Speaking at the ceremony themed “Building a Culture of Fire Safety Across Nigeria: Overcoming the ‘Not My Portion’ Mentality,” Adeyemi, who was represented by the Deputy Controller General, Aliyu Tambari, said.

The Fire Safety Week engaged Nigerians nationwide with a singular message that fire prevention must begin with individuals abandoning the deeply ingrained mindset that fire disasters are distant possibilities.

He recalled that the programme began with a virtual town hall that set the tone for public engagement, followed by the presentation of Bankers’ Cheques under the Group Life Insurance Scheme to families of fallen and injured fire officers.

The event also featured the presentation of the “CG’s Cup” and medals sponsored by Kabir Lateef to motivate personnel of the Service.

Throughout the week, fire officers conducted nationwide sensitisation in schools, markets, and major economic centres, complemented by street roadshows, drills and demonstrations designed to equip citizens with practical fire-prevention knowledge.

Adeyemi said the response from Nigerians had been “remarkable,” citing heightened interest and renewed national commitment to preventive safety.

The CG said the closing ceremony, which featured the presentation of certificates and awards, was designed to honour individuals and institutions that had shown exceptional commitment to fire safety compliance and risk reduction.

He noted that the recognitions symbolised national service and deep civic responsibility.

“To the participants receiving certificates, I congratulate you,” he said, urging them to become ambassadors of fire safety in their homes, workplaces, and communities.

He added that the institutions recognised this year had demonstrated exemplary adherence to safety standards and meaningful collaboration with the Federal Fire Service.

Adeyemi reserved special praise for 2Face Idibia, whom he described as a worthy nominee and now appointee for the National Fire Safety Ambassador Award.

He said the artiste’s influence would help amplify public messaging, inspire behavioural change and connect millions of Nigerians to the national fire safety agenda.

“As a National Fire Safety Ambassador, we expect him to inspire a new generation to embrace a culture of safety,” the CG said.

He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to strengthening training, modernising operations, improving inter-agency coordination and deepening community engagement, saying Nigeria must keep pace with global advancements in the fire-safety sector.

Adeyemi expressed gratitude to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for his support, and commended civil society groups, corporate bodies, partner agencies and community leaders for contributing to the success of the Safety Week.

He also lauded fire officers nationwide for their professionalism and dedication.

The fire safety chief urged Nigerians to replace carelessness with caution and denial with preparedness, stressing that “safety is not an event, but a continuous responsibility.”

Martin Amidu warns against unlawful delegation of police authority

0

Martin Amidu has questioned the legality of recent joint military and police operations in Ghana’s anti-galamsey campaign, saying they exceeded the constitutional mandate of the Ghana Police Service.

Amidu provided a detailed breakdown of incidents in November 2025. He explained that the IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, had issued operational directives in accordance with Article 202 of the 1992 Constitution, tasking the Criminal Investigation Department and regional police commands to investigate specific incidents in Ahafo, Volta, and Ashanti Regions.

Portable tackles Cubana ChiefPriest after he said Tinubu will not secure 10K votes in the East if Nnamdi Kanu is not released

?When you visited President Tinubu, did you tell him to release Nnamdi Kanu? You only went there to hustle for contracts and secure your own interests?- Portable tackles Cubana ChiefPriest after he said Tinubu will not secure 10K votes in the East if Nnamdi Kanu is not released

Singer, Hakeem Fashola aka Portable, has taken a swipe at socialite Okechukwu Pascal aka Cubana ChiefPriest, who in a post shared on social media some hours ago, said come 2027, President Tinubu will not secure 10K votes in the South East if Nnamdi Kanu is not released.

Chiefpriest said this while reacting to the conviction and sentencing of Nnamdi Kanu by an Abuja High Court on Thursday, November 21. In his post, Chiefpriest said the President should not be deceived that Kanu is the Supreme Leader of the South East and that any decision to have him incarcerated till 2027 will work against President Tinubu come 2027 as he will barely secure votes from Ndigbos.

Reacting to ChiefPriest’s claim. Portable in a video he shared dismissed the socialite’s claim. He tackled him for not discussing about Nnamdi Kanu when he joined Davido to go see the President some months back. Portable said instead of discussing about Kanu, Chiefpriest seized the opportunity with the President to discuss about his own interests and how to secure contracts for himself.

On the claims that South Easterners will not vote for President Tinubu in 2027 if Kanu is not released, Portable said this is not true as his people will be given money to vote for President Tinubu during the election.

India’s largest conglomerate stops Russian oil imports amid global pressure

0

India’s largest conglomerate Reliance Industries, owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has stopped importing Russian crude oil for its export-only refining unit at Jamnagar in the western state of Gujarat.

The move aims to comply with an EU ban on fuel imports made from Russian oil through third countries, which takes effect next year. It also aligns with US sanctions on major Russian oil producers Rosneft and Lukoil, set to kick in on Friday.

“This transition has been completed ahead of schedule to ensure full compliance with product-import restrictions coming into force on 21 January 2026,” Reliance said in a statement.

The White House has welcomed the move by Reliance.

“We welcome this shift and look forward to advancing meaningful progress on US-India trade talks,” the White House press office said, in a statement to the Washington Post.

Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil has been a major sticking point between India and the US. Trump slapped India with 50% tariffs in August, including a 25% penalty for buying Russian oil and arms, which he says was funding Moscow’s war on Ukraine – a charge India has denied.

India’s purchases of discounted Russian oil shot up from barely 2.5% of imports before the war began in 2022, to around 35.8% in 2024-25.

Reliance is India’s largest importer of Russian oil, and accounts for around 50% of Russian oil flows into the country.

The Jamnagar refinery is the largest single-site refining complex in the world – with two separate units dedicated for exports and the domestic market.

Mounting global pressure appears to be having a desired effort on India after months of resistance from Delhi to reduce oil purchases from Moscow. Over the past couple of months, oil refiners in India have been lowering their imports, according to several reports.

Reliance reduced orders from sanctioned Russian companies by 13% while increasing monthly imports from Saudi Arabia to 87% and Iraq to 31% in October, according to a Carnegie Endowment report.

Indian state-controlled refineries are also skipping Russian crude imports for December contracts according to Bloomberg.

Given India has sharply curtailed its imports, Washington must “immediately scrap the additional 25% tariff on Indian goods”, Ajay Srivastava of the Global Trade and Research Initiative (GTRI) think-tank said.

“Maintaining the tariff despite India meeting US expectations undermines goodwill and risks slowing already delicate trade negotiations,” Mr Srivastava said.

Negotiations for a broader trade deal between India and the US have been severely hampered by the former’s Russian oil purchases, but the tensions appear to be gradually letting up after months of uncertainty.

Government to generate US$10 billion in annual forex through worker exports

0

Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum is the Minister of State for Special Initiatives Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum is the Minister of State for Special Initiatives

In an effort to tackle the country’s spiralling youth unemployment and earn foreign exchange, government – through the Ghana Labour Exchange Programme (GLEP) – is aiming to export 800,00 to one million skilled and unskilled labour in three to four years.

Briefing media on the programme in Accra, Minister of State for Special Initiatives, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, said GLEP is projected to generate foreign exchange in excess of US$10billion annually.

“I’m looking at more than US$10billion coming into this country – probably three times the IMF bailout. This is something that can easily be done,” he said.

According to him, this would be a panacea to the debt-laden country that has gone to the IMF for a bailout 17 times since independence – and is currently under a US$3billion IMF bailout programme until 2026.

He stressed that these potential earnings are projected to surpass earnings of the country’s traditional exports like cocoa and gold.

The Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, indicated that gold alone has brought in about US$8billion since the GoldBod was established in March.

This saw total international reserves surge to US$12billion, bringing relative stability to the local currency. The cedi appreciated by 37 percent year-to-date, according to Dr Asiama.

He however pointed to the Philippines, which he said earns about US$135billion annually from its overseas workers; and India, which garnered US$130billion in 2023 to prove the programme’s economic potential.

“Closer to home, Egypt now makes about US$35billion from labour export – more than the Suez Canal. Kenya made US$5.08 billion,” he added.

The programme, which he said is the “vision” of President John Mahama, is designed to reduce domestic unemployment, inject massive forex into the economy and upskill the national workforce.

“We are looking at a holistic approach. Some people think that labour export is brain-drain. But I tell people it is rather a brain-gain,” the minister intimated, pushing back against critics who label such initiatives as “brain drain”.

“You cannot stop it. We live in a global village,” he argued, maintaining that workers who go abroad refine their skills, attitude and mentality. According to the minister, this will benefit the country when they return, confirming that “the likelihood of these workers coming back to Ghana is about 80-90 percent”.

The Ghana Labour Exchange Programme targets both highly skilled professionals and unskilled labourers.

The minister said doctors, nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists and IT experts are in high demand in other countries and can be exported.

He also noted that carpenters, steel-benders, bricklayers and welders capable of working in industries like shipbuilding are also in high demand.

“For the non-skilled, we are looking at people who can go as helpers, labourers, seasonal farm helpers, or even those who can work on a ship with just a basic training of about six weeks,” he explained.

The minister revealed there is immediate demand for workers worldwide, citing aging populations in several western and Asian countries that need active youth to take up jobs. However, he didn’t state explicitly where these workers will be taken.

Parliament adopts report for review of Petroleum Revenue Management Act

He cited continuous demand for Ghanaian workers, stating that “1,000 to 2,000 nurses” are being recruited for specific locations and 654 drivers already recruited for a single country.

Agyekum indicated that plans are far advanced to streamline travelling processes and ensure the workers safety, stating that dedicated desks will be put at various embassies to handle issues and queries and fast-track the acquisition of travelling documents for these workers.

“The safety of our people is the paramount thing. All our embassies are going to have a desk officer,” he said, adding that government is signing memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with host countries to protect the workers’ rights.

The minister emphasised that some training may be provided for people seeking jobs without prior training, adding that the workers will be given initial contract periods ranging from 9 months to 2 years – after which they can return to Ghana or opt for a contract renewal.

However, he expressed his outfit’s commitment to collaborating with other ministries and government agencies in ensuring that the programme achieves its intended purpose of stemming the unemployment canker and securing the livelihoods and welfare of Ghanaians youth while earning foreign exchange for the country.

‘England is not ready for a black superstar’ – Ian Wright on Jude Bellingham

0

Ian Wright is an ex-footballer Ian Wright is an ex-footballer

Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes England is “not ready for a black superstar” like Jude Bellingham amid a wave of ongoing criticism of the midfielder.

The Real Madrid star has endured limited game time for the Three Lions in recent months and was criticised for his reaction to being substituted in Albania. Now, however, ex-striker Wright has leapt to the defence of the 22-year-old.

Bellingham under scrutiny

Despite being an important player for Madrid and playing a big role in England’s run to the final of Euro 2024, Bellingham is not a guaranteed starter under manager Thomas Tuchel.

The German caused a stir in June when he said his mother finds some of Bellingham’s on-field actions “repulsive” — something he later apologised for. The former Borussia Dortmund talisman was then left out of England’s games in October, despite recovering from shoulder surgery.

Then, when the attacking midfielder was accused of a negative reaction to being taken off late in England’s 2-0 win over Albania at the weekend, Tuchel said he would review his actions.

When asked whether Bellingham is possibly not buying into the collective of the England team, he told reporters: “That is a bad impression. It should be about the collective. What we did in camp is all about the collective. I have to then review it — I was happy about the goal. I had a quick talk with Morgan Rogers, and I was sure that everyone celebrated together. I will have a look at it. That is not the image we want to transport. We feel everyone is committed and that everyone accepts tough decisions, be it before the match or in the match.”

Wright ‘worried’ for Bellingham

As the criticism continues to rain down on Bellingham, Wright has come to the aid of the youngster, saying that media coverage of him is influenced by his skin colour and that he “frightens certain people”.

He said on Stick to Football: “What they said about Jude not celebrating was complete fabrication, it was a lie. What they’ve tried to do is build something, because England have won so easily, they’ve not conceded any goals. They needed something else to pile on top of the narrative.

“I’m worried for Jude simply because he’s somebody that they can’t control. You can’t control him. Coming off the ‘Who else?’ and what he’s done at the World Cup (European Championship), he’s showing people that ‘I’m here, I’m black and proud and ready to go’. I’m an Englishman, even though when I was younger, people used to say to me, ‘Yeah but you’re not really English, are you?’ — ‘Yeah, I’m English.’ I don’t think they’re ready for a black superstar who can move like Jude’s moving. They can’t touch him, like I just said. He goes out there, performs, does what he does, says, ‘Who else?’ It’s too uppity for these people.

“I’ll put it in football terms. They love N’Golo Kanté — he’s a humble black man, he gets on with what he’s doing. I’m not saying he’s an Uncle Tom or anything, that’s how his personality is. But if you get a (Paul) Pogba or a Bellingham, and you get that kind of energy, that does not sit well with those people. For someone like Jude, for some reason, it frightens people because of his capability and the inspiration he can give.

“It’s something that you’re taught as a black man when you’re going out there — you just want to do the best you can and keep your head down and be, for want of a better word, a humble f*****g slave. This is dragging up from that kind of energy. Because if you are outspoken, black, playing to that level and not caring, that frightens certain people — and that’s what’s going to happen with Jude.”

How to Get—and Care for—Waist-Length Hair This Winter

0

@chrishoran20/Instagram

Key Takeaways

  • Waist-length hair won’t happen overnight, or even over a few months.

  • To get there, you’ll want your hair in as healthy a state as possible. Eat well, trim regularly, and avoid heat and chemicals to prevent breakage.

  • Once you’ve hit your goal length, continue trimming regularly, treat your hair gently, and use the appropriate products when cleansing, conditioning, and moisturizing.

So, you want longer hair. And not just longer hair! You’ve got mermaid dreams, and you want waist-length hair. You know it won’t be quick, but logic dictates that it should be possible. Now what?

To achieve extremely long hair, you’ll need to know how to help it grow, how to keep it healthy, and how to take care of it once you’ve reached the desired length. To help get you started on the journey, we spoke with board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD, and pro hairstylist Jenna Spino. Read on for everything you need to know about growing and maintaining waist-length hair.

Meet the Experts

How to Grow Waist-Length Hair

Your hair can only get extremely long if it’s in a healthy state. “The biggest thing is to keep the hair healthy or, if it’s not healthy, to get it healthy,” says Spino. That’s because “hair that has damage can break.”

To begin, you’ll want to take great care of your hair. “Develop a consistent hair care routine that involves regular washing with a gentle shampoo, a hydrating conditioner, and [using] a wide-tooth comb to detangle hair,” advises Camp. Both experts recommend getting regular trims and avoiding heat styling and harsh chemical processing as much as possible. Additionally, Camp suggests using “accessories that are gentle on the hair shaft, such as silk pillowcases, that limit friction and tangling.”

As your hair grows, you’ll want to care for it from root to end. Camp says to “avoid hairstyles that could potentially damage hair, such as those that put a lot of tension on the root of the hair, which can lead to traction alopecia.” You might want to consider your diet as well.

How Long It Takes

As for how long it’ll take, Spino says, “It depends on the length of the hair you’re starting with and the health of your hair.” Camp agrees: “The full amount of time it takes to reach your waist may be determined by how long your hair is initially.” Our experts tell us that hair grows about a centimeter or a half inch each month.

Just know it won’t be quick: “Growing waist-length hair is a process that takes time,” says Spino, adding that “it is not for the faint of heart.”

Why Isn’t My Hair Growing?

If your hair isn’t moving along at your desired speed, here are some suggestions.

Be Patient

As mentioned, this is going to take some time. “Most people trying to grow their hair feel [like] it isn’t growing, so keep in mind it does take patience,” says Spino. Know that it’s common to feel like you aren’t seeing any progress—we look in the mirror regularly, so it’s hard to see small changes.

Try a Growth Vitamin

Some supplements and supplement combos can help support faster hair growth. That said, they aren’t a miracle cure. “Taking hair growth supplements can help hair grow faster, but even that can take a few months to notice,” says Spino.

Abstain From Heat

It goes without saying at this point, but heat styling can be damaging and cause breakage—meaning even if you’re experiencing decent growth from the root, you won’t see any results. If your hair isn’t completely healthy, Spino recommends taking a heat break and abstaining for a little while. During the break, use moisturizing and strengthening products to help get your hair back in fighting form, she says.

See a Professional

If you’ve tried everything but you’re still not getting the growth you want, it might be time to look further into it. “Hair growth can be affected by underlying medical conditions, medications, nutritional deficiencies, and previous damage from hair styling and treatments,” says Camp. “If basic at-home measures are not helping, see a board-certified dermatologist for evaluation and treatment.”

How to Care For It

Congratulations, you made it! Now that you’ve got waist-length hair, here are some tips for caring for it.

  • Keep away from heat and chemicals: Just like you’ve already been doing, you’ll want to continue avoiding harsh treatments. “Opt for natural hairstyles that limit heat and exposure to chemicals, which can damage hair strands,” recommends Camp.

  • Don’t stop trimming: Just because you made it to this length doesn’t mean the upkeep ends here. “Waist-length hair will need regular trims,” says Spino. “Having waist-length hair with scraggly ends isn’t the goal.”

  • Use the right products: You must keep your hair in great condition to maintain length. “Consider using a cleansing shampoo periodically to remove excess oil and product buildup,” suggests Camp, who also recommends the occasional mask for boosting moisture and hydration. Additionally, “regularly using a hydrating, gentle conditioner is also important to keep [hair] hydrated and help with any tangles,” says Spino.

  • Be gentle: It may be as long as a rope, but your hair is not as tough as one. “Remember, hair that long is really old… so you need to be gentle,” says Spino.

Proxy voting ban unfair and unlawful – NPP USA Chair

0

Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) USA branch, Yaa Frimpomaa Amponsah, has strongly criticised the party’s decision to maintain the ban on proxy voting ahead of the 2026 presidential primaries.

Her comments follow the announcement by the NPP Presidential Elections Committee that all delegates must be physically present on voting day, despite numerous petitions urging a reversal of the ban.

Amponsah argued in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, November 21, that proxy voting is a lawful provision under Ghana’s electoral regulations and should not be sidelined for administrative convenience.

According to her, Regulation 25 of CI 127 clearly outlines who qualifies for proxy voting, including persons who are sick, vulnerable, disabled, or unable to be present due to circumstances beyond their control.

“Our position is simple. Proxy is a feature of an election that is enshrined in our laws. The framers of our laws and constitution were very clear that vulnerability can cause someone not to participate in the democratic process, so they made safeguards to protect such people,” she said.

Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) USA branch, Yaa Frimpomaa Amponsah

She stressed that no internal committee has the authority to override laws governing Ghana’s elections, adding that the party risks disenfranchising loyal members who, by law, qualify to vote by proxy.

Amponsah further argued that protecting the integrity of the election requires adherence to the country’s electoral statutes, not the convenience of party committees.

She noted that many delegates living abroad, those in school, and individuals who have served the party faithfully may be unable to travel to their polling centres but still deserve the right to vote.

“For you to sacrifice the statute on the altar of convenience, it has to protect the sanctity of what you are doing—not the sanctity of the people, the state, those who have travelled, those who are in school. They have the right under the law to exercise the franchise given to them. I think the committee is doing those people a disservice,” she added.

Her comments contrast with the position of the Presidential Elections Committee, chaired by Joe Osei Owusu, which insists that maintaining the ban is necessary to ensure a transparent and incident-free election. The decision means all eligible delegates must vote in person in the 2026 presidential primaries.

Ghana inaugurates completed expansion phases at Tema Port

0

Port of Tema

Ghana’s President has officially inaugurated Phases I and II of the Tema Port Expansion Project at Meridian Port Services’ Terminal 3, marking the full completion of one of the country’s most significant maritime infrastructure developments.

With construction, equipment installation and all operational systems now delivered, the expanded terminal features four berths, a 1,400-metre quay, and 127 hectares of terminal area. The upgrade increases Tema’s capacity to 3.7 million TEU, positioning it as one of West Africa’s most advanced container gateways, reported by Dynaliners.

Meridian Port Services — a joint venture between APM Terminals (Maersk), Africa Global Logistics (MSC) and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority — operates the facility. The expansion is expected to boost cargo efficiency, strengthen Ghana’s role in regional trade and support long-term economic development.

2026 budget ‘not enough’ to transform agriculture – PFAG

0

The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has described the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy as an improvement over previous years but says it still fails to provide the level of investment needed to fully transform Ghana’s agricultural sector.

The assessment follows the presentation of the 2026 budget by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, under the theme “Resetting for Growth, Jobs and Economic Transformation.”

According to PFAG, the budget signals the government’s intention to support agriculture but allocates only 2.18 percent of total government expenditure to the sector—far below the 10 percent target in the Maputo Declaration.

The Association says this level of funding is inadequate to drive the significant reforms needed to address rising food imports, recurring gluts, climate-related shocks, and structural challenges affecting farmers.

Ahead of the budget reading, PFAG submitted proposals calling for increased investments in irrigation, Farmer Service Centres, agricultural roads, storage facilities, an agricultural development fund, and stronger policies to promote local food consumption.

The group also urged government to waive taxes on agricultural inputs, support the Women’s Bank to reduce borrowing costs for farmers, and strengthen measures against smuggling.

Sector Performance and Recent Gains

The Association’s analysis notes positive macroeconomic indicators for 2025, with agriculture contributing to a GDP growth rate of 6.3 percent in the first half of the year. Food inflation dropped sharply from 27.8 percent in January to 9.5 percent in October, supported by favourable weather conditions and interventions under the Feed Ghana Programme.

Sub-sector growth also improved, with crops expanding by 6.2 percent, livestock by 5.8 percent, and fishing by 7.7 percent. Cocoa showed a modest recovery from severe declines in 2024 but remains vulnerable due to climate change, illegal mining, and pests. PFAG warns that without urgent government attention, the cocoa industry could face deeper challenges.

Budget Allocations and Interventions

The 2026 budget introduces several initiatives aimed at improving agricultural productivity and market access. These include:

* GH¢828 million for 1,000 km of agricultural enclave roads
* GH¢200 million to the National Food Buffer Stock Company to mop up excess produce
* GH¢690 million to begin operationalizing Farmer Service Centres
* Investments in fertilizer, seeds, agrochemicals, warehouses, agro-processing plants, and irrigation projects
* A US$500 million Oil Palm Development Finance Window

Government also announced measures to promote all-year vegetable production, expand irrigation under the Irrigation for Wealth Creation Initiative, and support agro-industrial value chains.

However, PFAG points out several concerns, including the slow pace of NAFCO operations; the limited GH¢105 million allocation for irrigation; delays in establishing Farmer Service Centres; and the absence of new major irrigation facilities. The group also notes inconsistency between the stated allocation to NAFCO and the figures captured in the budget.

Key Gaps Identified

PFAG highlights several critical areas the budget failed to address:

* Absence of an Agricultural Development Fund to cushion farmers against shocks
* Lack of investment in pastoral development and stalled cattle ranching and transhumance initiatives
* Limited agricultural financing at the district level under the District Assemblies Common Fund
* Slow progress on tax waivers for agricultural inputs, which could reduce production costs by up to 20 percent

Conclusion and Recommendations

While acknowledging the steps taken in the 2026 budget, PFAG insists that agriculture requires far greater commitment to achieve food security, reduce the US$3 billion food import bill, and improve the livelihoods of farmers nationwide. The Association calls for strengthened resource allocation, legal backing for local food procurement in schools and public institutions, clear timelines for major agricultural projects, and robust accountability mechanisms.

PFAG says that with more ambitious investment and consistent implementation, the 2026 budget could set Ghana on the path to agricultural transformation, resilience, and inclusive economic growth.

Accra, Nov. 21, GNA – Mrs. Faustina Essel Adepa, the Principal, School of Peri-Operative and Critical Care Nursing, has charged newly graduated trained specialist nurses to step into their professions as agents of change and contributors to a more resilient healthcare system in Ghana.

She urged them to go into the world with their expertise, to save lives, shape communities and strengthen national health outcomes.

The Principal was speaking at the 9th Joint Graduation Ceremony held by the School of Peri-Operative and Critical Care Nursing, Ophthalmic Nursing School, Public Health Nursing School, and School of Anaesthesia, in Accra.

It was on the theme, “Empowering a Resilient Healthcare System in Ghana through Specialised Nursing.”

The ceremony saw 414 students from the four Schools conferred with certificates after years of rigorous academic and clinical training.

The graduating class included 162 from Peri-Operative and Critical Care Nursing, 128 from the Public Health Nursing School, 89 from Ophthalmic Nursing, and 35 from the School of Anesthesia.

Mrs Adepa described the ceremony as a celebration of perseverance, sacrifice, and professionalism.

“You have endured long hours of study, intense clinical practice, and numerous challenges. Today, we honour your resilience, your commitment, and your passion for nursing,” she said.

She emphasised that the health sector needed not just more practitioners, but dedicated specialists ready to drive transformation.

The Principal noted that the skills and expertise of the graduates would save lives, strengthen communities, and contribute significantly to national development.

Mrs Adepa extended appreciation to families, mentors, and faculty members whose support had been pivotal to the graduates’ success.

“This achievement is shared. Your investment in these graduates will continue to bear fruit as they make meaningful contributions to society,” she added.

She said the careers of the newly trained specialists would require courage, innovation, empathy, and sound judgement, particularly in complex clinical situations where their decisions may determine the course of a patient’s life.

The Principal encouraged the graduates to wear their caps and gowns with pride, reminding them of the responsibility and honour associated with the nursing profession.

Professor Elvis Ofori Ameyaw, the Deputy Director, Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy, University of Cape Coast, said the ceremony was a reaffirmation of Ghana’s commitment to producing a specialised and ethically grounded workforce.

He said their achievement was not only a testament to their intelligence but also to their resilience, discipline and commitment to humanity.

Professor Ameyaw said specialised nursing was no longer an added advantage but a national necessity, such that Ghana’s evolving health profile demanded a workforce, equipped with technical expertise, emotional intelligence and the ability to function effectively.

“Collectively, you embody the competences required to strengthen Ghana’s health system,” he added.

He reaffirmed the University’s continuous support through curriculum oversight, quality assurance, research collaboration, faculty development and capacity building initiatives.

Professor Ameyaw urged the graduates to approach every patient with empathy, embrace new technologies, new knowledge and new methods as they stepped into the professional world.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, has alleged that government, through the Bank of Ghana, has injected US$8 billion into the economy this year in a bid to stabilise the Cedi against foreign exchange pressures.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, during the debate on the 2026 Budget, Oppong Nkrumah cautioned that the intervention was only a temporary measure.

He warned that any external shock could erode the gains made, leaving the currency vulnerable once again.

The legislator disclosed that government had cut GH¢28 billion in expenditure after failing to meet its revenue targets.

As a result, he said, the administration could not allocate US$5 billion to the Feed Ghana programme, which was intended to boost agricultural productivity.

Oppong Nkrumah also criticised government for failing to provide GH¢51 million seed capital to the Women’s Development Bank, describing the move as a setback for women’s empowerment initiatives.

The lawmaker questioned the fiscal priorities of the administration, citing the announcement to purchase two executive jets as misplaced at a time when resources were scarce.

He urged the government to review its fiscal strategy and channel investments into real sectors of the economy to spur growth and create sustainable jobs.

In response, Cletus Seidu Dapilah, National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Jirapa, expressed optimism about the 2026 Budget, insisting that it offered hope for employment opportunities for the youth.

Vice Chairman of Black Stars Management Committee, Stephen Appiah, has commended the performance of the team despite their back-to-back defeats in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup.

The Black Stars, as part of their preparations for next year’s World Cup, headed to Asia to play against Japan and South Korea.

In the first game, Ghana lost 2-0 against Japan at the Toyota Stadium before losing 1-0 to South Korea at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.

Despite the disappointment, Appiah, who is a former skipper of the team, has praised the players for their performance.

“I’m so happy with the performance of the guys, especially in the second game against South Korea. Against Japan, the second half they played well [and] against South Korea they played better,” Appiah told Kobe Boujee.

“We went there for results, but at times it’s not only about the results but also about the performance. You watch certain games and you see teams losing, but you see the fans applauding them, which means they gave everything.”

“That’s what our guys did, and I am also happy that some of the guys had the chance to show themselves because they have been in camp for so many months, and they have been getting call-ups, but they don’t get the chance to play, so platforms like these will give them the chance to show themselves,” he added.

The Black Stars will reassemble again in March to continue their preparations for the Mundial, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Meanwhile, Black Stars will learn their group opponents for the World Cup on December 5.
