Joe Mettle

Renowned gospel musician, Joe Mettle, has officially launched the 2025 edition of his flagship concert, ‘Praise Reloaded’.

The most anticipated annual gathering of worshipers headlined by gospel artiste and worship leader, Joe Mettle, now in its 14th edition, is slated for El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

Following the unprecedented success of the 2024 edition—which saw the Accra Sports Stadium filled—this year’s Praise Reloaded promises to elevate the experience even further.

Themed ‘Festival of Gratitude’, the event seeks to unite believers in a moment of collective thanksgiving, reflection, worship and bestowing unhurried gratitude to God.

“We believe Praise Reloaded 2025 will be a divine convergence—a moment where hearts align in gratitude and voices rise in one accord,” said a spokesperson from Joe Mettle Ministries.

“It’s not just about music; it’s about uniting thousands in collective worship, creating an atmosphere where people can experience the presence of God in a deep and personal way. This year’s lineup was prayerfully curated to reflect the spirit of gratitude at the heart of this year’s theme,” he further noted.

With a line-up of spirit filled artistes, carefully curated by Minister Joe Mettle and his Joe Mettle Ministries team, Praise Reloaded 2025 will soon welcome the most revered voices in gospel music across the continent: Nigeria’s powerhouse worship leader and trumpeter Nathaniel Bassey, South Africa’s award-winning vocalist Ntokozo Mbambo, and Ghana’s own Akesse Brempong.

More spirit-filled ministers are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, promising a night of unforgettable praise, worship, and divine encounters.

Since its inception over a decade ago, Praise Reloaded has become a landmark event on Ghana’s gospel calendar, drawing thousands from across the nation and beyond. Year after year, it continues to grow in scale and impact, serving as both a spiritual recharge and a celebration of God’s enduring grace.

The event is free and open to all, however, registration is required at www.joemettlemusic.com. Further event details will be released soon via Joe Mettle Ministries’ official platforms.

Reinstate sacked KATH CEO now – Asante Youth to Mahama

0

A traditional youth group, the Asante Youth Association, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to rescind his decision to replace Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah as Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The group has expressed its dissatisfaction with the removal of Dr. Addai-Mensah, citing that the decision could affect the ‘Heal Komfo Anokye’ project, an initiative spearheaded by Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to renovate major facilities at the hospital.
The group has also called on the board chairman of the hospital to put on hold the inauguration of a new CEO for the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

A letter from the presidency and sighted by Citi News on Monday, May 5, indicates that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo, has been appointed as the new CEO of the hospital.
Addressing journalists in Kumasi, Vice President of the Asante Youth Association, Nana Oppong Boadi, stated that the healthcare system in the region should not be politicised.

“…If all of a sudden Addai-Mensah is put aside, it will retard the progress of Komfo Anokye and because of this that is why we are saying no to the decision.

“We want the President to rescind that decision, and the information provided to us purports that the President is not aware, but these cabal in government are trying to do this against Asante, and we do not want that to happen. This is about health, and Addai-Mensah has exhibited professionalism as a CEO,” he urged.

A police officer stationed at the Sakasa Police Station in Tamale has been interdicted after his arrest for allegedly possessing restricted pharmaceutical substances at Kpalsi, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern Region.

The officer, identified as General Lance Corporal Shani Abdullai, was reportedly picked up by members of an anti-drug task force during an operation in which he was suspected of attempting to supply the substances to a known drug base in the area.

The Ghana Police Service announced the interdiction in a statement posted on its Facebook page on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

According to the statement, the interdiction is to “allow for a thorough investigation into his conduct in line with Police Service regulations.”

Although the police did not disclose the specific type or quantity of substances retrieved, the action follows the circulation of a viral video on social media that appeared to show the officer being arrested in the course of the operation.

In the video, voices in the background claimed that the officer had been caught selling drugs allegedly meant to help fight illegal distribution.

Castro’s ‘Me Nam Na Me Tete’ was initially a ‘diss’ to Charterhouse

Ghanaian rapper and entrepreneur, D-Black Ghanaian rapper and entrepreneur, D-Black

Ghanaian rapper and entrepreneur D-Black has revealed that the late musician Castro originally recorded his hit song ‘Me Nam Na Me Tete’ as a diss track aimed at Charterhouse, the organisers of the Ghana Music Awards.

In an interview with Blac Volta, D-Black explained that Castro was upset after not winning an award he believed he deserved at the GMAs, prompting him to vent his frustrations through music.

“Me Nam Na Me Tete,’ was initially a ‘diss song’ to Charterhouse. Because the past VGMAs, there was an award that he thought he was going to win, and he didn’t win, and everybody’s talking about it,” D-Black revealed.

He went on to explain that the lyrics of the song reflected Castro’s response to public conversations surrounding his loss.

“That’s how the ‘Me Nam Na Me Tete’ came about, which means, he’s hearing that people are talking about the award that Charterhouse didn’t give him,” he added.

D-Black also shared that Castro had asked him to record a verse on the song, one that matched the ‘diss’ tone of the original. However, he declined because he had no personal issue with the event organisers.

“So he freestyled it, a little ‘diss’ to Charterhouse and then he told me to freestyle on the song too, but I told him I can’t do that because they didn’t do nothing to me,” D-Black said.

D-Black further emphasised that after he recorded his verse, Castro had a change of heart. He decided to remove the ‘diss’ portion from the song and reposition it as a commercial release.

“So I freestyled on it. The next day he came and he said that’s his next single. Then he took out the diss to Charterhouse,” D-Black recounted.

‘Council of State has failed the country’ – Afenyo-Markin

Afenyo-Markin (in shades and flat cap) addressing the media at the protest Afenyo-Markin (in shades and flat cap) addressing the media at the protest

The Leader of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has called out the Council of States for their role in the ongoing process to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking at the ‘Save The Judiciary Demonstration’ on May 5, 2025, the MP for Effutu Constituency described the attempt to remove the Chief Justice as an attack on the judiciary.

According to him the protest has become necessary to resist a move by the executive, which in his estimation, constitutes a disregard for democracy and the rule of law.

“We are here to protest the executive’s intimidation and interference in our judicial system. We are here as citizens of Ghana encouraged by the constitution to express and present our petition in a peaceful manner.

“And we believe that what is happening undermines our democracy and rule of law. This morning, we are before you and our mission is very simple; to protest the executive’s intimidation, and interference of this very institution,” he said.

He argued that the judiciary must be protected and treated as a branch of government, which is neutral in its operations.

“We are political actors. The judiciary is supposed to be a neutral actor in this democratic dispensation and the judiciary is our last hope,” he said.

He lashed out at the Council of State for aiding the executive in the process to remove the Chief Justice from office.

“For the Chief Justice to be singled out for this unfortunate attack based on some flimsy, pedestrian petitions – the Council of State has failed the country.

“We want you as an institution to put aside your individual differences and know that it is an institution that is under attack. Maybe today it is Torkornoo – maybe tomorrow my respected friend, it could be you,” he said.

The demonstration by a coalition of political parties, led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has argued that the suspension of CJ is politically motivated and an attack on judicial independence, following the controversial suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Other participating parties include the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), among others.

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has already condemned the suspension, describing it as unconstitutional and urging an immediate reversal of the decision.

SSNIT rethinking investments to deliver better pensions

0

Evelyn Adjei, SSNIT's Actuarial Manager Evelyn Adjei, SSNIT’s Actuarial Manager

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) says it is working to ensure that contributors to the national pension scheme can look forward to improved retirement benefits, with periodic increases to reflect changes in the cost of living.

Key to these efforts is a reassessment of the Trust’s investment approach, according to SSNIT’s Actuarial Manager, Evelyn Adjei who added that they are focused on strengthening their portfolio to boost long-term returns for retirees.

“The current management is looking at what we have, how we can improve those investments, so that we can give people better pensions,” she said.

Ms. Adjei, who was contributing to a plenary discussion on ‘Optimising Effective Pension Management to Promote Sustainable Retirement Income’ at the 2025 Money Summit (TMS) in Accra, pointed out that while SSNIT continues to raise pensions annually, one’s salary during their working years still plays a significant role in determining their retirement income.

“A better pension also depends on one’s salary,” she said. “But SSNIT increases pensions on an annual basis, for retirees to gain back the purchasing power that they had at the time of their first pension.”

That annual adjustment, she explained, aims to cushion retirees against inflation and erosion of value over time.

“Over the years, the studies we’ve done have shown that most pensions increased by more than 100 percent within 5 years or 6 years when you go on pension,” she added.

“People start with a GH₡1,000 and within a short time they get to about GH₡2,000 or GH₡3,000, depending on how fast we can increase it.”

She averred that most workers in the country seem somewhat more concerned about their allowances and other things. Owing to this, she said, they pay their contributions on the basic salary.

“When they go home, they lose all their allowances. But, SSNIT has been doing its best. At the time of retirement, we calculate your pension and tell you how much you will receive. But every year, we increase your pension.”

The SSNIT official disclosed that: “One way of making sure that we increase your pension is by investing,” while noting that “some of our investments have been under attack”. This has led to re-prioritisation of SSNIT’s investments by the current management.

“In the early days, our strong reserves allowed us to raise pensions by up to 85 percent,” she said. “But with more people now drawing pensions, such increases are no longer feasible.”

Ms. Adjei insisted that people are getting better pensions now because they are also on better salaries. “People are retiring on better salaries. So, when they get better salaries they receive better pensions.”

“Your pension is directly tied to your declared salary,” she explained. “Whether it’s GH₡300 or GH₡25,000, that’s the amount we use to calculate your benefits.”

Also contributing to the discussions, Managing Director-Glico Pensions Dr. Francis Sapara-Grant highlighted the critical need for early investment and retirement planning.

He encouraged Ghanaians, especially young professionals, to begin securing their financial future by contributing to pension schemes at the earliest opportunity.

This year’s TMS, an annual event organised by the Business and Financial Times (B&FT), was themed ‘Optimising Investment and Pensions Management: Strategies for Sustainable Retirement Income and Economic Growth’.

TMS 25’s theme underscored the importance of long-term financial planning amid what some people perceive as an unstable retirement system.

Owing to this, Dr. Sapara-Grant noted that being foresighted toward pension planning is key to long-term financial independence and national economic stability.

“Retirement planning management as a whole concept is based on time, because it takes a long time to be able to plan a successful retirement. Retirement has to have several components, including one that can beat inflation and contribute to a stable income.”

Dr. Sapara-Grant further advocated for more investments in other income-generating ventures as a means to boost retirement benefits, indicating that relying solely on traditional pension schemes may not provide enough financial security in the long-term, especially given the rising cost of living and uncertainties in the pensions system.

“Retirement income planning is a combo-solution; you have to have different types of investment instruments around you to make it comprehensive. You do not bank your hopes on a defined pension scheme that tells you what you will be receiving.”

He suggested sustainable strategic investments such as real estate investments, mutual funds, agriculture, annuities, among others, to be able to rely on multiple income streams during retirement.

Promote GPL, not just the Black Stars – Serwaa Amihere to Kurt Okraku

Media personality Serwaa Amihere has called on the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, to invest more in promoting and marketing the Ghana Premier League, beyond just focusing on the various national teams.

She pointed out that the recent clash between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, held at the Accra Sports Stadium on May 4, 2025, recorded low attendance, a development that reflects poorly on the league.

The GHOne TV journalist advised Okraku to make the promotion of the local league a top priority, similar to how his administration markets the Black Stars, in order to make the Premier League more attractive.

“Dear Kurt Okraku, you have been President of the Ghana Football Association since 2019, and your biggest mantra was ‘Bring Back the Love.’ I support Kumasi Asante Kotoko, so our game against Hearts of Oak yesterday appeared frequently on my social media feeds. Shockingly, for Ghana’s biggest football game, I saw the attendance at the Accra Sports Stadium and was not impressed. Our biggest brand might be the Black Stars, but we cannot overlook the economic and social impact of having a well-organized and properly managed Ghana Premier League,” Serwaa wrote on X.

She further appealed to the GFA, saying, “Sir, please fix security at our stadiums, invest in marketing our game to attract fans, properly incentivize and remunerate match officials, improve our playing pitches, and make our league centers safe for families.”

The Kotoko–Hearts of Oak game ended goalless, with both teams missing chances that could have brought excitement to the match.

The poor attendance has sparked renewed concern over the marketing and declining appeal of the Ghana Premier League, with several football stakeholders calling for urgent reforms.

Crude Oil To Average $64 In 2025 – World Bank

0

The price of crude oil is expected to average $64 per barrel in 2025, the World Bank has revealed in its April 2025 Commodity Markets Outlook.

This is compared with $80.7 per barrel in 2024.

The Bretton Woods institution is forecasting a further drop in the price of crude oil to an average of $60 in 2025.

All things be equal coupled with a stable foreign exchange, the price of petroleum products will be flat at the pumps.

The report stated that escalating concerns about global economic growth saw oil prices fall sharply in early April 2025 to below $63 per barrel, the lowest level since April 2021.

The price slump started with the announcement of large trade tariffs on April 2, 2025, by the United States. This was associated with a $12 per barrel decrease in the course of four trading days, the 11th-worst four-trading-day price performance since 1990.

Although the Brent crude price had declined to $70/bbl by early March 2025, the net impact of these different factors resulted in a small increase of $1/bbl in quarter one 2025, partially reversing a $5/bbl quarter-on-quarter decrease in the final quarter of 2024.

Global Oil Demand

Meanwhile, global oil demand increased by 1.2 m/d (1.2%) in the first quarter of 2025 compared with 1.1% in quarter 4 2024.

Oil demand in China edged up by 0.2 mb/d (1.4%) in first quarter 2025 from 1.0% in 4th quarter of 2024, with demand in advanced economies also picking up by 0.4 mb/d (0.9%), from 0.3%.

Over the course of 2024, oil consumption growth slowed in China, Europe and Central Asia (ECA), and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), but accelerated in East Asia and the Pacific (EAP) excluding China, the Middle East and North Africa (MNA), and South Asia (SAR).

Consumption fell in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), while it was flat in advanced economies.

The deceleration of China’s oil demand in 2024 was due in part to increasing penetration of electric vehicles (EVs). More than 40% of new cars purchased in China in 2024 are estimated to be EVs, with a resulting oil demand reduction of about 0.45 mb/d.

Government Urged to Modernise Health Training Institutions for Student Efficiency

0

By Benjamin A. Commey

Accra, May 5, GNA – Professor Angela Kwartemaa Acheampong, Dean, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Wisconsin International University College (WIUC), has urged the government to modernise health training institutions to enhance teaching and learning.

She said this would ensure such institutions produce qualified health practitioners to improve healthcare delivery.

Prof. Acheampong made the call at the commissioning of a High Definition (HD) Anatomy Table Lab, also known as a virtual lab, at WIUC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery in Accra.

The lab, jointly commissioned by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and WIUC Vice-Chancellor Dr. Paul Kofi Fynn, will provide students with an interactive and immersive learning experience to explore human anatomy in detail.

Prof. Acheampong said the initiative marked a significant step in leveraging technology for a better understanding of human anatomy.

She explained that anatomy was the foundation of healthcare education,” saying, “A thorough understanding enables healthcare professionals to provide high-quality care.”

Prof. Acheampong emphasised that the lab would provide personalised learning and enable students to study at their own pace.

“The videos are there, the images are there, and students can always go back to it,” she said.

She also noted its impact on clinical practice, adding that knowing the structure and function of the human body improved care delivery. Prof. Acheampong stressed that the lab would support professional development and help healthcare professionals stay updated on advancements in anatomy.

While acknowledging the high cost of such technology, she urged the government to invest in equipping public health training institutions.

“It will make the teaching easier for the teacher and aid in the understanding of the students too,” she said.

Mr. Akandoh said there was the need for innovation in medical training.

“At a time when technology is reshaping every aspect of our lives, it is essential that our health training institutions keep pace,” he stressed.

He called the anatomy table a “bold leap into the future of health education,” noting its use of real human body data and interactive 3D simulations to enhance learning.

“It enhances understanding, improves retention, and provides an unparalleled practical learning experience for nursing and midwifery students,” he said.

“It affirms a shared understanding that to meet the evolving health challenges of today and tomorrow, our training must be innovative, adaptable, and forward-thinking.”

Mr. Akandoh said the ministry was committed to supporting innovations aligned with universal health coverage and resilient healthcare systems.

Dr. Fynn, Vice Chancellor WIUC, said the College would continue investing in modern technology to enhance teaching and learning.

Okyeame Kwame Is EnABLE Ambassador For World Bank, Others

0

Okyeame Kwame

Decorated Ghanaian musician, Okyeame Kwame, has been made EnABLE ambassador with World Bank, Solidaridad, REDD+, Forestry Commission and Tropenbos as partners.

The Enhancing Access to Benefits while Lowering Emissions (EnABLE) project in Ghana will complement the Emissions Reduction Programme and provide direct support to groups or constituencies that are excluded or likely to be excluded from the distribution of carbon and non-carbon benefits.

The project is implemented by Solidaridad in partnership with Tropenbos Ghana across six Hotspot Intervention Areas (HIAs) in Ghana, with funding from the World Bank. Solidaridad will work in Ahafo-Ano, Sefwi-Wiawso/Bibiani, and Kakum HIAs, whilst Tropenbos focuses on Juaboso-Bia, Atiwa and Asutifi-Asunafo HIAs.

Okyeame Kwame has been selected because of his active engagement in climate change and environmental issues in Ghana and internationally.

As part of his roles, Okyeame Kwame will compose a dedicated EnABLE song and jingles, which will be used to support climate finance benefit sharing inclusivity.

In that vein, he will also engage communities in inclusivity awareness creation and help amplify the voices of the marginalised in climate finance interventions.

The musician has also engaged on a similar project, the DGM Project, where he used his following and public influence to support awareness creation on climate change and sustainable land use.

It is expected that with this background, Okyeame is very well positioned to contribute to awareness creation on inclusive climate finance benefit sharing.

The marginalised people in the major cocoa growing areas where the Ghana Cocoa Forest REDD+ Programme was implemented, particularly women, youth, migrants and disabled will benefit from this project.

Okyeame Kwame, over the years, has used his voice as an instrument of change and advocacy for many projects, and he is expected to impact lives with this project.

Edmond Kombat Appointed Acting TOR MD

0

Edmond Kombat

President John Mahama has appointed Edmond B. Kombat to the position of Acting Managing Director, the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), following the reassignment of Dr. Yussif Sulemana to the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

This was contained in a letter dated Tuesday, April 29, 2025 and signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama.

Dr. Sulemana is expected to serve as a Technical Advisor at the Ministry, after a brief tenure at the helm of the state-owned refinery.

Mr. Kombat, a lawyer and experienced energy strategist, was named Deputy Managing Director of TOR earlier this year. His elevation to the acting managing director role is seen by many as part of broader efforts to stabilise leadership and restore TOR’s operational relevance.

In brief comments following his appointment, Mr. Kombat said, “TOR remains a strategic national asset. I am committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure its turnaround and long-term sustainability.”

His appointment is expected to usher in a new phase of strategic engagement with investors, regulatory stakeholders, and industry partners. With Ghana’s fuel consumption rising steadily and global oil markets remaining volatile, TOR’s revival is increasingly seen as a national imperative.

Mr. Kombat is expected to focus on improving crude procurement, optimising plant efficiency, and securing new sources of funding.

While TOR’s challenges remain complex, observers say the leadership transition offers a fresh opportunity to reimagine the future of the refinery and its role in Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector. The appointment has been well received by staff, who see Mr.  Kombat’s elevation as a step toward stability and renewed purpose.

NPP-led coalition petitions Judiciary over CJ’s suspension

0

A coalition of political parties led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially submitted a petition to the Judiciary, calling on judicial authorities to prevail on President John Dramani Mahama to reverse the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

During the presentation of the petition, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin appealed to staff of the Judicial Service to stand with the political parties in defending justice and fairness within the judicial arm of government.

He also issued a caution to key officials within the judiciary, including the Acting Chief Justice and the Acting Judicial Service Secretary, urging them not to become complacent simply because they may not be directly affected by the suspension.

He warned that the emerging pattern of removing Chief Justices and Superior Court judges with changes in political administration risks entrenching division and resentment within the system.

“For the Judiciary to rise, don’t be comfortable because it is Torkornoo. Don’t be comfortable, because you have your own grievances, you also have a party interest, because the attack is benefiting you. No, be with that attitude of touch one, touch all. Rather, pray that a fair system is created for all to benefit,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

In response, Acting Judicial Service Secretary, Dr. Cyracus Badinye Bapuuroh, expressed appreciation to the delegation for their engagement and assured them that the petition would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for consideration.

Mahama nominates Paa Kwesi Baidoo as new KATH CEO

0

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, following the dismissal of Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah.

The decision was confirmed in an official statement dated April 30, 2025, and signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.

The letter directed the regularisation of Dr. Baidoo’s nomination by the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 525), as amended.

The dismissal of Prof. Addai-Mensah and the subsequent nomination of Dr. Baidoo have stirred mixed reactions, particularly from the Asante youth who have urged President Mahama to reinstate Prof Addai-Mensah.

Ghana to face rising poverty, currency woes amid inflation – World Bank cautions

0

The World Bank’s latest April 2025 report warns that Ghana is facing mounting economic pressures that threaten to reverse years of progress in poverty reduction.

The report paints a stark picture of growing vulnerability among Ghanaian households, driven by surging inflation, a depreciating cedi, and intensifying climate risks.

According to the report, more than one in four Ghanaians now live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than $2.15 a day, the equivalent of GH¢30.28 in today’s terms.

It further states that the cost-of-living crisis has been exacerbated by steep increases in the prices of food, fuel, and basic services, significantly eroding household purchasing power.

The report emphasizes that these economic shocks are disproportionately affecting Ghana’s most vulnerable populations, including low-income families and rural communities.

“Poverty in Ghana fell considerably up until the COVID-19 pandemic. However, moderate growth due to substantial fiscal adjustments, global economic and trade uncertainties, and persistent inflation is likely to impact households and may increase poverty in the coming years. If the impacts on the poorest are not properly mitigated, the necessary economic stabilisation reforms could undermine further progress in poverty reduction,” it stated.

The World Bank warns that without immediate environmental action and comprehensive structural reforms, over one million more Ghanaians could be pushed into poverty in the near future.

Meanwhile, experts from the Bank have stressed the urgent need for investment in human capital, targeted social protection programs, and climate resilience initiatives.

Structural reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability, improving governance, and enhancing job creation are also seen as critical to reversing the rising poverty trend.

Despite these challenges, the report highlights Ghana’s strong potential for recovery if bold, inclusive, and sustainable policy actions are implemented.

The World Bank continues to work closely with the government and development partners to address these overlapping crises and support a pathway toward long-term stability and equity.

NFA gave my movie to TV3 to air without my permission

Ghanaian film producer Daniel Kofi Ewusie Ghanaian film producer Daniel Kofi Ewusie

Ghanaian film producer Daniel Kofi Ewusie has accused the National Film Authority (NFA) of enabling TV3 to broadcast his movie without his consent.

He has described the act as a violation of his intellectual property rights.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV on May 4, 2025, Ewusie claimed that the NFA, under the leadership of Juliet Asante, granted TV3 permission to air his film without seeking his approval.

“After my investigations, I noticed that the National Film Authority gave TV3 the go-ahead to air my movie. We submitted the film to Juliet Asante who was the organiser of the Black Star Film Festival. That was during the film festival and she gave it to TV3.

“What pains me a lot is that I posted this on my social media pages in January, and nobody cares about it… I flew seven crew members to the United States for awards. The movie is not just any regular movie so claiming you are the best in entertainment doesn’t mean you can steal someone’s intellectual property,” he said.

According to Ewusie, the film was submitted to Juliet Asante during the Black Star Film Festival, which she organised.

He alleged that the film was later given to TV3 without his knowledge or consent.

Ewusie said despite repeated attempts to address the matter with both the NFA and TV3, his efforts have yielded no results.

“I’m suing them. I wrote to TV3 and told them to stop airing the movie. They acknowledged receipt of the notice, but I haven’t heard from them in over three months. My lawyers have followed up with a reminder, and still, there’s been no response,” he stated

He added that legal proceedings would begin on Monday and that he hopes this case will serve as a precedent in protecting creative rights.

“I’m filing this in court as a case study. It’s time we take these issues seriously in Ghana,” he concluded.

Ghanaian-born U.S.-based pastor, Prophet Jimmy Alla-Mensah Ghanaian-born U.S.-based pastor, Prophet Jimmy Alla-Mensah

Ghanaian-born U.S.-based pastor, Prophet Jimmy Alla-Mensah, is once again drawing attention after his earlier prophetic prayer call appears to align with two separate emergency incidents involving Air France flights just days apart.

On April 16, 2025, Prophet Jimmy issued a prophetic message urging urgent intercession for France’s airspace. In a post widely circulated on social media, he declared:

“We secure their airspace and any France-related flight (inbound and outbound) in Jesus mighty name.”

Barely two weeks later, on April 30, Air France Flight AF32, operating a transatlantic route from Paris to Atlanta, declared a mid-air emergency shortly after takeoff, sparking renewed safety concerns over the Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

According to a detailed report by Travel and Tour World, the Dreamliner (registration F-HRBA) experienced a critical issue at 25,000 feet over Normandy and had to descend to 20,000 feet before returning to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.

Flight tracking confirmed that pilots initiated a squawk 7700, the universal distress code, around 50 minutes after departure. The aircraft landed safely at 15:23 CEST, avoiding what could have been a catastrophic event.

In a striking follow-up, Travel and Tour World also reported a similar incident the next day, May 1, involving Air France Flight AF22 to Los Angeles. That flight turned around over the Atlantic Ocean under unclear emergency conditions, further intensifying concerns.

Reacting to the close succession of events, Prophet Jimmy wrote, “Indeed, God is faithful. Two different Air France flights involved in mid-air emergency incidents in 2 days with zero casualties? This is the finger of God,” he stated.

The pastor credited divine intervention for the safety of all passengers and emphasised the spiritual importance of prophetic intercession.

He reiterated, “This is nothing but the power of prophetic intercessory prayers. Glory be to God for saving the passengers on both Air France flights in Jesus mighty name.”

The pastor’s comments have stirred fresh discussions online about the role of prophetic voices in national and global safety concerns. Supporters view the back-to-back incidents as evidence of divine protection following prophetic guidance.

Skeptics, however, continue to debate the correlation between prophecy and unfolding events.

Regardless of perspectives, the incidents bring renewed scrutiny to Boeing’s 787-9 fleet and the importance of aviation preparedness.

According to Travel and Tour World, the same aircraft involved in the April 30 emergency had been diverted just days earlier to Dublin due to a medical incident, raising eyebrows about recurring issues.

GCB Bank declares GH¢1 dividend after two-year break, signals strong recovery

0

GCB Bank PLC has announced a GH¢1 per share dividend for the 2024 financial year pending final approval from the Bank of Ghana.

The announcement, made at the bank’s 31st Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Accra, marks a return to shareholder payouts after a two-year suspension and highlights the bank’s remarkable financial turnaround.

The proposed dividend totaling GH¢265 million would represent a yield of 15.7%, underlining GCB’s restored financial strength following the economic disruptions of Ghana’s domestic debt exchange.

This comes on the back of a record-breaking year for the indigenous lender, which reported a profit before tax of GH¢1.9 billion, a 23.3% increase compared to 2023.

The bank also moved up to second place among peers in key indicators including deposits, loans, and total assets.

The Managing Director of GCB Bank, Farihan Alhassan, described 2024 as the strongest financial year in the bank’s history in nominal terms, crediting solid fundamentals and strong execution.

However, he noted the need for further gains in cost efficiency, and reiterated the management’s focus on investing in talent, digital systems, and service delivery.

Board Chairman, Professor Joshua Alabi, newly appointed alongside Alhassan as part of a reconstituted 10-member board, outlined the bank’s next strategic phase from 2025 to 2028.

He added that the roadmap would prioritise customer experience, digitisation, and enhanced sales.

Under its recently concluded four-year strategic plan, GCB achieved impressive growth: its loan book expanded by 52.8% to GH¢10.2 billion, deposits rose 58.5% to GH¢34.5 billion, and total assets surged to GH¢42.8 billion a 57.6% increase that exceeded industry averages.

Shareholders’ equity also grew 41% to GH¢4.3 billion, lifting the capital adequacy ratio to 15.23%, above the 13% regulatory requirement.

The bank posted a return on equity of 32.4% and a return on assets of 3.4%, while improving asset quality the Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio dropped to 15.1%.

In line with its social responsibility agenda, GCB invested GH¢12 million in community initiatives during 2024.

These spanned education, health, sports, and youth entrepreneurship, with notable programs, including textbook donations, medical assistance, and the “The Entrepreneurship in You” initiative.

I didn’t know the exact date for Kotoko-Hearts of Oak clash

0

GFA Executive Committee member, Dr Randy Abbey GFA Executive Committee member, Dr Randy Abbey

The Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Dr Randy Abbey, has disclosed that he was unaware of the precise date for the Asante Kotoko versus Accra Hearts of Oak game.

According to him, he was aware that the game would take place, but he did not know the exact schedule for the match.

The GFA Executive Committee (Exco) member asserted that the low publicity surrounding the game seems to affect the hype around it, which is problematic for the progress of the Ghana Premier League.

“I don’t know about the game [Super clash]. To be honest, I knew there was a Hearts of Oak-Kotoko game, but I didn’t know it was this Sunday,” Randy Abbey said ahead of the game, as reported by Luv FM.

Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko played out a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium, with both teams failing to convert their chances in a fiercely contested Ghana Premier League.

Coming into the fixture as underdogs, Hearts of Oak were under pressure after three straight defeats to their rivals and a below-par season. Kotoko, by contrast, started brighter and looked more threatening in the opening exchanges.

Despite the chances, neither side could find the breakthrough. Hearts edged possession (51%), while Kotoko registered more shots (10 to 5), but both teams lacked the cutting edge in front of goal.

The draw keeps Asante Kotoko in fourth place with 51 points, while Hearts of Oak sit sixth with 46 points, with their slim hopes of a league title all but extinguished.

Kodua Spells Out Conditions For Amnesty

Justin Kodua Frimpong

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has said that the party will grant a general amnesty to cover all party members who have been suspended in the interest of reconciliation. However, amnesty will not be granted to those who resigned from the party.

The General Secretary, however, added that the party is willing and ready to accept those who show remorse and are willing to come back home.

Speaking at the national ‘Thank You Tour’ of the party in Konongo in the Ashanti Region on Thursday, Mr. Frimpong gave clear distinctions in the categories of people the party will consider granting amnesty to, and those that the party will not consider.

“Our party leadership prioritises the unity of our party, so we have decided to extend an olive branch to our former members who have been suspended and are willing to rejoin us,” he said.

“We cannot give general amnesty to everybody.  If you were with us and you left on your own, we cannot just bring you back. Such people, if they are willing to rejoin the party, must write officially to the party to indicate their willingness to return, for the party to decide whether to accept them or not,” the General Secretary explained.

Ghana is under siege; help us defend it – Afenyo-Markin to Parliament

0

Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has issued a passionate appeal to fellow legislators, urging them to rise above partisan interests and help safeguard Ghana’s democratic institutions.

His comments came on Monday, 5 May, when members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) staged a demonstration and presented a petition to Parliament in protest against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Mr Afenyo-Markin described the ongoing political developments as a direct threat to the country’s constitutional order as he presented a petition to Parliament which was received by Clerk of Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.

“Ghana is under siege,” he declared. “This is a call to all of us, regardless of political affiliation, to defend the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.”

He condemned what he termed as politically motivated interference in the judicial process and called on Parliament to play its oversight role in ensuring that democratic principles are not eroded.

“We cannot allow institutions of state to be undermined under the guise of accountability. Parliament must act as the last line of defence for our democracy,” he stated.

The demonstration, which saw a significant turnout of party supporters and civil society actors, was part of broader resistance to what the organisers describe as an unjust and unconstitutional move to sideline the Chief Justice.

The petition submitted calls for immediate parliamentary intervention and public transparency surrounding the suspension.

Okraku Mantey Drags Abeiku Santana For Breaching Public Office Conduct

0

Mark Okraku Mantey and Abeiku Santana

Former Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey has raised concerns over the appointment of Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, popularly known as Abeiku Santana, as Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) while he continues to host a drive-time show on Okay FM during official working hours.

In an interview on Joy FM, Okraku Mantey questioned the appropriateness of Abeiku’s dual roles.

“Why is Abeiku Santana going on air, holding a public office, and still working at Okay FM,” he asked.

He emphasized that such actions could be in breach of Public Services Commission regulations, which typically require public servants to dedicate official hours solely to their governmental duties.

Abeiku Santana was appointed as Deputy CEO of the GTA in February 2025. Known for his extensive career in media and tourism advocacy, Abeiku Santana has been a prominent figure in promoting Ghana’s cultural heritage and tourism sector.

Despite his new governmental role, he continues to host the drive-time show on Okay FM, a position he has held since 2010.

Okraku Mantey further argued that the media landscape in Ghana is not as neutral as often perceived, suggesting that media practitioners holding governmental positions should fully commit to their public service roles. He cited the example of Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who resigned from his media career before entering politics, as a model for separating media and governmental responsibilities.

Speaker, Blay Bid Former Clerk Farewell

0

Speaker Bagbin exchanging pleasantries with Freddie Blay

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, together with the former Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Board and former First Deputy Speaker, Freddie Blay, have paid glowing tributes to the late Samuel Ntim Darkwa, a former Clerk to Parliament, during a solemn farewell ceremony held in his honour.

The ceremony, held at the forecourt of Parliament House, drew a host of dignitaries, including the former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye; former National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo; former Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame; and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

The event was marked by heartfelt reflections on Mr. Darkwa’s decades of service to the country’s legislative body.

Their presence highlighted the bipartisan respect and national reverence accorded the late Clerk.

Ahead of the funeral rites, a solemn pre-burial service was held in Parliament to honour the late Samuel Ntim Darkwa, who worked for over thirty years in various capacities and rose through the ranks to become Clerk to Parliament.

The ceremony brought together Members of Parliament, parliamentary staff, and dignitaries who gathered to pay their respects to a man whose service spanned all four Republics of Ghana.

According to Speaker Bagbin, Mr. Darkwa was renowned for his deep institutional knowledge and unwavering commitment to parliamentary democracy.

He notably co-authored seminal works such as ‘The Evolution of Parliament in Ghana’ and ‘How Our Parliament Functions’, contributing significantly to the documentation of Ghana’s legislative history.

Speaker Bagbin further highlighted his legacy as a dedicated public servant and constitutional expert, reiterating his contributions to the development of the country’s parliamentary democracy.

The late Darkwa’s unparalleled journey through Ghana’s legislative evolution began in 1961, culminating in his appointment as Clerk to Parliament, the highest administrative position in the legislature.

He served as Assistant Clerk to the 1968 Constituent Assembly and as Clerk to the 1992 Consultative Assembly, cementing his place in Ghana’s democratic development.

Uniquely, Mr. Darkwa holds the distinction of having served in all Parliaments and Constituent Assemblies of Ghana from 1961 to 1997 — a period marked by constitutional reforms, political transitions, and institutional growth.

His deep expertise in parliamentary procedure and the intricate workings of the House and its Committees earned him accolades from both local and international peers.

He was a familiar face at Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) conferences and served as a resource person at several workshops and seminars across Southern Africa.

His scholarly contributions, particularly to The Parliamentarian — the CPA’s flagship journal — further bolstered his reputation as a thought leader in legislative affairs.

In retirement, Mr. Darkwa remained deeply engaged in Ghana’s democratic processes, Speaker Bagbin said.

He served as a consultant to both the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) and the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), contributing to studies on the performance of Parliament and reforms to the Standing Orders of the House.

Import volumes set to dip below 1.5m tonnes by 2030 – Report

0

Ghana’s import volumes are projected to decline, falling below 1.5 million tonnes by 2030 Ghana’s import volumes are projected to decline, falling below 1.5 million tonnes by 2030

Ghana’s import volumes are projected to decline, falling below 1.5 million tonnes by 2030, a study by the Center for Applied Research and Innovation in Supply Chain – Africa- (CARISCA) has revealed.

Meanwhile, export traffic is expected to rise, reaching approximately 1.2 million tonnes over the same period, signaling a major shift in the country’s trade dynamics.

This study explores the relationship between tax policies and port operations in Ghana, focusing on how changes in tax regimes affect port traffic and government revenue.

The trade forecast, based on trends reveals diverging outlooks for Ghana’s import and export activities. Historical data from 2011 to 2022 show that import volumes generally rose, with a notable surge beginning in 2013. Imports peaked at approximately 2 million tonnes in 2021 and 2022, a high point likely driven by post-pandemic recovery and heightened demand for goods.

However, the outlook from 2023 onwards paints a more cautious picture. The forecast shows a consistent downward trend, with import volumes expected to dip below 1.5 million tonnes by 2030.

This anticipated decline is attributed to a combination of factors, including rising import costs, the elimination of the Benchmark Value Discount Policy (BVDP), the Ghanaian Cedi’s persistent underperformance against major currencies, and a potential increase in local production reducing reliance on imported goods.

“This downward trend in import volumes signals a shift that both government and industry players must respond to. We are entering a phase where Ghana will need to lean more on domestic capacity and export-led strategies,” the report noted.

On the other hand, the export forecast offers a more optimistic outlook. From 2011 to 2019, export volumes steadily grew, reaching about 1 million tonnes by 2019. The period from 2020 to 2022, however, was marked by fluctuations likely stemming from global supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Looking forward, export traffic is forecast to rise sharply, notably in the previous year 2024, when volumes are expected to increase exponentially before stabilizing in subsequent years.

According to the report, the projected rise in exports by 2030 to approximately 1.2 million tonnes could be driven by improved global demand, coupled with enhanced domestic production capabilities, as data suggest.

However, the report caution that this upward trend will be sustainable only if Ghana implements favorable trade and industrial policies.

“The export sector’s growth potential is real, but it won’t reach its full promise without intentional investment in infrastructure, trade facilitation, and policy consistency,” the report stated.

The diverging paths of imports and exports call for adjustment of Ghana’s trade and economic strategies. Policymakers are urged to capitalize on the promising export outlook while mitigating the factors driving the import decline. This includes supporting value-added manufacturing, reducing barriers to export markets, and stabilizing the macroeconomic environment to encourage investment.

This reflects the potential for Ghana to capitalize on its export sector if favorable policies are implemented, the report added.

President Mahama can’t match NPP’s policies – Abdul-Hamid declares

Leading NPP member and former CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid Leading NPP member and former CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid

Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid has expressed unwavering confidence in the party’s achievements despite their defeat in the 2024 general election.

Speaking during the NPP’s ongoing Thank You Tour, Dr Abdul-Hamid urged party members not to be disheartened by the loss, emphasizing that the party’s ambitious goal to “Break the 8”, a slogan aimed at securing a third consecutive term and breaking Ghana’s eight-year political duopoly between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—was a bold attempt to achieve the unprecedented.

“Tell yourself the truth, why were you saying ‘Break the 8’? Because you knew it has never happened before. You were trying to do the impossible,” Dr Abdul-Hamid said.

He argued that the party should not be hard on itself for failing to accomplish what he described as a formidable challenge, especially since no first-time presidential candidate has ever won an election in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

The NPP’s candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, lost to the NDC’s John Mahama, who secured 6,328,397 votes (56.55%) against Bawumia’s 4,657,304 (41.61%) on December 7, 2024, as declared by the Electoral Commission.

Dr Abdul-Hamid dismissed feelings of regret or blame within the party, stating, “Walaahi, I am not beating myself, I understand it. I am not upset, and I don’t think anybody is responsible for anything.”

Quoting Bob Marley, he added, “He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day. In our case, we didn’t fight and run away, we fought, and we are here, and we are fighting again.”

He contrasted his stance with other party leaders who have taken a more apologetic tone, noting, “The general secretary and others are nice guys, but I am not a very nice guy. They might say they are sorry, but walaahi, I am not sorry about anything.”

He expressed strong pride in the NPP’s record, asserting that no policy implemented by the party warrants regret.

“We did our best for this country, and there is nothing that John Mahama will do that will match up to what we have done. Nothing, walaahi, nothing,” Dr Abdul-Hamid declared.

He criticized the current NDC administration under President Mahama, pointing to what he described as chaotic governance, including frequent changes in appointments.

“Look, already see what is going on in governance. They appoint a chief executive one day, replace them the next,” he remarked, citing instability in leadership at institutions like the Tema Oil Refinery.

Dr Abdul-Hamid’s comments come as the NPP reflects on its electoral loss, which saw the NDC not only win the presidency but also secure a historic parliamentary majority with 183 seats compared to the NPP’s 88.

The party’s defeat has been attributed to voter dissatisfaction with issues such as the rising cost of living, corruption allegations, and a debt crisis, which Dr Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer himself, acknowledged stemmed from the party’s failure to listen to Ghanaians and address concerns like the e-levy and haircut policies.

Despite this, Dr Abdul-Hamid remains defiant, urging party members to stay united and prepare for future battles, drawing on his experience as an opposition member since 1991-92 to emphasize resilience.

The Thank You Tour is part of the NPP’s efforts to regroup and rebuild following the 2024 election loss.

Government raises GH¢4.72 billion in its latest treasury bill auction on May 2 Government raises GH¢4.72 billion in its latest treasury bill auction on May 2

The government raised GH¢4.72 billion in its latest treasury bill auction on Friday, May 2, 2025, falling short of the government’s GH¢6.32 billion target and marking a sharp reversal from the previous week’s oversubscription of GH¢548 million.

Investor demand totaled GH¢5.29 billion, of which GH¢4.72 billion was accepted.

The auction recorded an undersubscription of GH¢1.59 billion, underscoring growing investor caution amid declining yields and persistent macroeconomic uncertainties.

The auction results, published by the Bank of Ghana, showed a strong appetite for shorter-term instruments, with the 91-day bill accounting for 63.1% of the total amount accepted.

All GH¢2.98 billion tendered for the 91-day paper was accepted, suggesting investors continue to prefer liquidity and lower duration risk.

Meanwhile, GH¢668 million was accepted for the 182-day tenor out of GH¢869 million tendered, while GH¢1.07 billion was secured for the 364-day bill from bids totaling GHS 1.43 billion.

Yields across all maturities declined modestly, reflecting the central bank’s ongoing monetary stabilisation efforts.

The 91-day yield fell to 15.23% from 15.32%, the 182-day bill eased to 15.77% from 16.03%, and the 364-day instrument declined to 16.95%, down sharply from 18.37% a week earlier.

Kade risks becoming another Bawku – Chiefs warn IGP, National Security

0

Nana Kwaku Obiri, the Adehyehene of Kade Nana Kwaku Obiri, the Adehyehene of Kade

Some chiefs and residents of Kade in the Eastern Region have issued a strong warning to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the National Security architecture to urgently caution some regional commanders who are allegedly interfering in the town’s chieftaincy matters.

According to the chiefs, they have received credible information that certain police commanders in the Eastern Region have supported a letter, purportedly using the name of the IGP—to back an individual they describe as an intruder, providing him with police protection.

They say this action directly violates a High Court ruling and injunction currently in place.

They argue that such conduct by the police is not only unlawful but also shows blatant disregard for the authority of the courts.

Chiefs and residents fear that this level of interference could spark serious unrest in the area.

The residents emphasized that Kade already has a legitimate and widely respected chief, Osabarima Agyare Tenadu II (Kadehene), and that any attempt to impose another chief through illegitimate means will be fiercely resisted.

They are therefore calling on the IGP and the National Security Coordinator to act swiftly and call the commanders involved to order to prevent potential chaos and ensure lasting peace in Kade.

“There are certain things happening in Kade for which, if care is not taken, calamity may occur. We already have a chief in Kade. But we have heard that they are bringing another individual on Tuesday, May 5, 2025, a person who is unknown to us. We already have a chief in the person of Agyare Tenadu II. So, we would like to send a message to National Security and the IGP that some commanders have been induced to bring the intruder into the town.

“We are ready for Tuesday, but we are urging the government and the IGP to call the Kade District Commander and the Division Commander to order. We are not women here in Kade. However, we do not want a replication of Bawku in Kade. But if the IGP and National Security fail on Tuesday, Kade will be worse than Bawku on Tuesday; we are very ready for them,” Nana Kwaku Obiri, the Adehyehene of Kade, cautioned.

The legal battle over the Kade chieftaincy, dating back several years, intensified in 2023 when Osabarima Agyare Tenadu II sought judicial intervention to affirm his position.

On October 31, 2023, the High Court in Kumasi issued a ruling granting an order of certiorari to quash any gazetting of another individual as Kadehene, effectively recognizing Osabarima Agyare Tenadu II as the legitimate chief.

The court’s decision barred Twum Barima Otibu Asare and his supporters from holding themselves as Kadehene or performing customary rites in the area.

Osabarima Agyare Tenadu II, through his lawyer, Captain Nkrabea Effah Darteh (rtd), addressed the media at his palace in Kade on January 18, 2024, emphasizing his commitment to peace and urging the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to enforce the court’s ruling to prevent bloodshed.

He stated, “I am the valid sitting legal chief of Kade,” and called for calm, pledging not to resort to violence despite the mounting tensions caused by the rival faction’s activities.

However, the rival faction has continued to challenge the ruling, contributing to ongoing unrest in the area. The dispute has raised concerns about potential violence, with Osabarima Agyare Tenadu II notifying key national figures, including the Inspector General of Police, Chief Justice, Attorney General, and Minister of Chieftaincy Affairs, about the escalating situation.

Kenya government condemns ‘shameful’ shoe-hurling at president

President William Ruto has been addressing crowds during a tour of the west of Kenya President William Ruto has been addressing crowds during a tour of the west of Kenya

The Kenyan government has described as “shameful” an incident in which a shoe was thrown at President William Ruto during a rally on Sunday.

Widely shared video clips show the footwear striking the president’s left arm as he held it aloft while he was speaking.

Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura condemned what happened and called for those behind it to be “apprehended”. “What would happen if we all decided to throw shoes at each other? What values are we teaching our children?” he asked in post on X calling for the institution of the presidency to be respected.

Kenyan media are reporting that three people have been arrested, but the police have not confirmed this.

Some MPs have also criticised the shoe-throwing, which has been described as a major security lapse.

The president was addressing a crowd at a public event in the western county of Migori as part of a three-day tour of the region where he has been launching and commissioning development projects.

While the views of some ordinary Kenyans chime with the feeling that the shoe-throwing was disrespectful, others have suggested that it reflected frustrations over the state of the economy.

An official video of the event shared by the president on X does not show the shoe incident, which appears to have happened off-camera.

However, commotion within the crowd is briefly seen. The president is heard asking his security officers, who may have been about to look for the culprit, to leave the people in the audience alone.

The screen then goes blank before and minutes later the video shows other people speaking at the rally.

The shoe-throwing comes amid growing concerns over the safety of public officials. Last week, an opposition MP was shot dead last week in the capital, Nairobi, by gunmen on a motorcycle in a suspected assassination.

Nelson Koech, an MP in the president’s party, said Sunday’s incident was an “affront to our democracy” adding that “we have taken a joke too far”.

“You can imagine if that shoe was a bullet… people joke about the security of the president. It took a very bold step for someone to take their shoe and throw it at the president.

“We must secure the head of state,” he told local station Citizen TV.

Migori is in a region considered to be a stronghold of veteran opposition politician Raila Odinga, who ran against Ruto in the 2022 presidential election, but who has since made a deal with the president.

The agreement signed in March between Odinga and Ruto was “to help ease the prevailing tension in the country”, following deadly anti-tax demonstrations last year.

Since he became president in 2022, Ruto has faced protests from Kenyans frustrated with the cost of living and increased taxes.

61-year-old Reggie Rockstone defeats young opponent in intense martial arts bout [Video]

Ghanaian music legend Reggie Rockstone has made headlines for a different reason over the weekend with his explosive entry into mixed martial arts (MMA).

At 61, the rap icon stunned fans by defeating William Adom via submission in a thrilling Global World Championship bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

Though his age took a toll on him in the initial rounds, he swiftly gained momentum, holding his opponent in chokehold until he tapped out.

The electrifying event was graced by high-profile dignitaries, including Kimathi Rawlings, and attracted a massive crowd of both fight and music enthusiasts.

Reggie’s MMA journey may be new to many, but as he revealed in a pre-fight interview, his roots in martial arts run deep.

“If you’ve known me for over 50 years, you’d know I started martial arts before music. I was the youngest Shotokan brown belt and a two-time junior Taekwondo champion,” he shared.

His decision to enter the ring at his age, he said, was not only a personal challenge but a mission to inspire the youth and shine a spotlight on Ghana’s budding MMA scene.

“Every day is a risk, but this is a calculated one. My goal is to lend my celebrity to build MMA in Ghana and show that age shouldn’t stop anyone from chasing new goals.”

Despite initial skepticism, especially from his family, Reggie’s win has sparked a national conversation and inspired many to consider training and fitness.

Support Chief Justice Torkornoo – Afenyo-Markin tells judiciary

0

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on members of the judiciary to unite in defense of their institution amid growing concerns over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

He made the call during the presentation of a petition by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its allied parties at the Supreme Court as part of the ongoing “Save the Judiciary” protest.

Addressing the gathering on Monday, May 5, 2025, Afenyo-Markin described the suspension of the Chief Justice as a direct threat to judicial independence and democratic stability.

“The judiciary is our last hope, and we believe that what is happening undermines our democracy. For the Chief Justice to be singled out for this ‘unfortunate’ attack, a flimsy pedestrian petition.

“The  Council of State has failed the government, and we want you as an institution to put aside your individual differences and know that it is your institution that is under attack.

“Maybe today it is Torkonoo, tomorrow it may be you. You don’t serve at the whims and caprices of a political party and a government,” he said.

Scores gather at Supreme Court for #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo [Photos+Video]

Hundreds of Ghanaians have gathered at the Supreme Court for the #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Other political parties, including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), among others, have also joined the protest.

The main objective of the demonstration is to call on the government to immediately withdraw the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

NPP Members of Parliament (MPs), led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, were present to lend their voices to the call.

The suspension followed the establishment of a prima facie case after three separate petitions were filed seeking her removal.

However, the political parties involved have strongly condemned the decision, describing it as a direct attack on the independence of the judiciary.

‘Touch one, touch all’ – Afenyo-Markin rallies Judiciary as NPP, others protests Chief Justice’s suspension

0

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has led a protest to the Judicial Service, demanding the immediate reinstatement of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, whose suspension by President John Dramani Mahama has triggered significant political and civic backlash.

Presenting a petition on behalf of a coalition led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Afenyo-Markin described the President’s action as “an attack on the very soul of Ghana’s democracy” and accused the Executive of undermining judicial independence for partisan purposes.

“We are here not as party activists, but as concerned citizens empowered by the Constitution to protest blatant executive interference and intimidation of the judiciary,” he said.

Coalition condemns suspension

The NPP-led coalition—which includes the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and Ghana Union Movement (GUM)—described the suspension as “an unprecedented attack on judicial independence.”

“The judiciary is our last hope. When you single out the Chief Justice based on flimsy, politically tainted allegations, you attack the entire justice system. Today it is Gertrude Torkornoo; tomorrow, it could be any of you,” Mr Afenyo-Markin warned.

He further accused the Council of State of failing to uphold constitutional checks and balances, saying it merely “rubber-stamped” the President’s decision.

“This is not a revolution – It’s a democracy”

The Minority Leader cautioned against the long-term consequences of executive overreach, citing historical precedents to underscore the danger.

“Don’t be comfortable today because the political winds favour you. This is about the soul of Ghana’s democracy. If the judiciary does not rise now, as it did during the era of Chief Justice Georgina Wood, we are heading down a dangerous path. Be guided by the principle: touch one, touch all.” he stated.

Drawing comparisons with past resistance by the Judges and Magistrates Association, he urged current members of the bench to consider bold actions, including a possible sit-down strike.

Mr Afenyo-Markin also criticised the recent appointment of seven new Supreme Court justices by the Mahama administration, describing the move as rushed and politically motivated.

“The same government that complained about judicial bloat has now stacked the court. The usual process—consultation with the Judicial Council, vetting by the Council of State, and parliamentary approval—has been sidestepped,” he alleged.

He urged judicial staff not to be swayed by promises of promotion or threats of transfer.

“We will speak up for posterity. Some judges are remanding individuals based on instructions from the Attorney General—not the law. That is not justice.”

Background

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was suspended last month by President Mahama, following the establishment of a committee to investigate petitions filed against her.

The decision, announced in a statement from the presidency, was said to be in accordance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution, which mandates a committee to probe allegations against a superior court judge once a prima facie case is established.

The presidency said the move followed consultations with the Council of State and that it had determined there were sufficient grounds for further inquiry.

The coalition has urged the Judicial Service to act swiftly in defending the autonomy of the judiciary. Copies of the petition are expected to be sent to Parliament and the Office of the President.

“Let your conscience prick you. You must not wait to be victimised before you act. Ghana’s democracy is at stake—and history is watching,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said.

NPP National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha NPP National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha

National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has dismissed the petitions seeking the removal of Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, describing them as baseless and unworthy of consideration.

In an interview on JoyNews, Mustapha expressed strong disapproval of the allegations against the Chief Justice, stating that if he were President John Dramani Mahama, he would have rejected the petitions outright.

“I have taken time to read all three petitions and the Chief Justice’s response to the petitions. If I were the president, I would call the three petitioners, give them severe head knocks, and throw the petitions away. In fact, I would give them to KVIP operators for toilet usage because they’re nothing but bogus and a bunch of nonsensical English put together,” Mustapha remarked.

His comments come amid an ongoing investigation into allegations against Chief Justice Torkornoo, Ghana’s third female Chief Justice, following her suspension by President Mahama on April 26, 2025.

The suspension, a historic first in Ghana, was prompted by three petitions calling for her permanent removal on grounds such as incompetence and misbehavior.

A five-member committee upon whose advice President Mahama may remove Madam Torkornoo is currently investigating the allegations.

The investigation has sparked significant controversy, with the NPP and other political parties, including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and People’s National Party (PNP), mobilizing for a peaceful demonstration on May 5, 2025, dubbed “Save the Judiciary.”

The protest, set to begin at 5:00 AM from the area opposite the Supreme Court, proceed past Parliament House, and conclude at the Jubilee House, aims to present a petition addressing what the parties describe as a threat to judicial independence.

The coalition accuses the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating moves that undermine Ghana’s constitutional democracy.

Akon Claims Credit For Wizkid’s Global Career & Afrobeats

Akon and Wizkid

Senegalese-American singer, Akon, has stated that he played a significant role in the international success of Nigerian Afrobeats star Wizkid and the global rise of the Afrobeats genre.

In a recent interview, Akon revealed that he signed Wizkid to his record label, Konvict Muzik, in 2008. At that time, Wizkid was primarily known within Nigeria. Akon believes that this partnership helped introduce Wizkid to a broader international audience.

Akon also mentioned signing the Nigerian music duo P-Square, contributing to the international appeal of Afrobeats. He emphasized that his efforts were instrumental in introducing business structures to the genre, stating, “I brought the business side of music to Afrobeats because all they [Nigerian artists at that time] knew about was the creative [side of music]. There was no business, no infrastructure, none of it attached to it.”

These statements have sparked discussions within the music community, with some acknowledging Akon’s contributions to the genre’s growth, while others debate the extent of his influence on Wizkid’s career and the broader Afrobeats movement.

CJ suspension demo: NDC reset is a negative reset – Minority Leader

0

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly criticised the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo by President John Mahama, describing the move as “a negative reset” that threatens the independence of the judiciary.

Speaking during a demonstration on Monday, May 5, held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other allied forces against the action of President Mahama, Mr Afenyo-Markin pointed out that attempts to remove the Chief Justice undermines the country’s democracy.

In his remarks, he questioned the intentions behind the action and called on members of the judiciary to rise above political influence.

“The judiciary is supposed to be a neutral actor in this democratic discourse. The judiciary is our last hope, and we believe that what is happening undermines our democracy and the rule of law,” he emphasised.

He condemned the petitions that triggered the processes leading to the Chief Justice’s suspension, calling it “flimsy” and “pedestrian” and accused the Council of State of failing the country by entertaining the three letters that called for the Chief Justice to be axed.

“For the Chief Justice to be singled out for this unfortunate attack… the Council of State has failed the country. We want you as an institution to put aside your individual differences and know that it is your institution that is under attack. Maybe today it is Torkornoo, tomorrow it might be you,” he warned.

Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that judicial officers must remain above partisan politics.

“You don’t serve at the whims and caprices of a political party and a government. If you wanted to be a politician, you would have been in a political party,” he said, adding that what is happening to Her Ladyship is “repugnant to good conscience.”

He also accused the government of hypocrisy, noting that it had previously criticised the expansion of the Supreme Court but had now appointed seven new judges under questionable circumstances.

“You know the process of appointing judges to the Supreme Court is not what has been used. So this reset is a negative reset,” he said, urging judicial staff not to be complacent.

Mr Afenyo-Markin further cautioned against political vengeance in the future.

“I also want to take this opportunity… to draw the attention of the nation to come to terms with the fact that there must be an end to bitterness. If this vicious cycle of ‘you did it to me, I will do it to you’ continues, there will be no further hope for our democracy,” he said.

He warned that such partisan actions could haunt current judicial staff in the future, especially with the possibility of a new government in 2028.

“I am humbly calling on all judicial service staff to think deep about tomorrow. Don’t be too comfortable because today some government officials are promising you promotions, so you don’t want to speak out. We will speak up for the sake of posterity,” he said.
