QNET hosts journalists from Ghana, other West African countries at Malaysian headquarters

0

QNET, a global direct selling company specialising in lifestyle and wellness products, has welcomed experienced journalists from seven West African countries to its corporate headquarters at QI Tower in Petaling Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The visit forms part of QNET’s annual media junket aimed at offering journalists and the wider public—particularly in Africa—an opportunity to gain first-hand understanding of the company’s operations, business model, and product offerings.

Journalists from Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Senegal, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone arrived in Malaysia on June 19, 2025, for the engagement. As part of the programme, they also participated in the V-Convention (VCON), QNET’s flagship global event that brings together government officials, media practitioners, independent distributors, and entrepreneurs.

The journalists toured the 15-storey QI Tower, which serves as QNET’s global headquarters, before departing for Penang Island where the VCON is officially taking place. At QI Tower, they visited the QNET product gallery to physically interact with the company’s wide range of lifestyle and wellness products.

At the corporate offices, the media team also observed live operations and received presentations on QNET’s philosophy, business structure, and product development. The visit, according to organisers, was meant to underscore that QNET—now 26 years old—is a legitimate company with real products, staff, and global reach.

The journalists were introduced to the company’s philanthropic wing, the RYTHM Foundation (Raise Yourself To Help Mankind), which is focused on delivering impactful humanitarian projects worldwide.

Particular attention during the visit was drawn to QNET’s activities in Africa, where the company says its brand is often misused by fraudsters seeking to scam unsuspecting victims.

“It is clear that QNET has nothing to do with these scammers, and QNET is working to fight scams and misinformation,” organisers stated.

The visit is part of QNET’s broader effort to combat false narratives about the company in Africa and to encourage accurate public understanding through credible media engagement.

During the tour, QNET reiterated on multiple occasions that it does not offer job placements abroad, does not require exorbitant fees in exchange for employment, and does not issue scholarships or visas. The company also emphasized that it is not a Ponzi or investment scheme.

“QNET does not give scholarships or visas to anyone. QNET is not a Ponzi or investment scheme. QNET says anyone who spreads such misinformation should be reported to the security agencies or to QNET through its WhatsApp hotline: +233256630005 or email at [email protected],” participants were told.

QNET highlighted several anti-scam initiatives it is rolling out across Africa, including the “QNET Against Scams” and “Say No” campaigns. The company continues to educate the public on how to detect fraud and better understand its legitimate business model and globally certified lifestyle and wellness products.

The company further disclosed that it is actively engaging with governments and law enforcement agencies across various African countries to clarify its operations, address brand misuse, and promote collaboration to curb fraudulent activities conducted in its name.

Meanwhile, the visiting journalists expressed excitement as they prepared to witness the grand opening ceremony of V-Malaysia on Penang Island on June 21, 2025. The event will bring together thousands of QNET independent distributors for a celebration of shared success, testimonials, and renewed commitment to the direct selling model that QNET says is transforming lives across the globe.

Eric Opoku hails Channel One TV/Citi FM for championing Agriculture at AgriFair 2025

0

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has commended Channel One TV and 97.3 Citi FM for turning AgriFair 2025 into a dynamic platform for mobilising national support for agriculture and reigniting public enthusiasm for the sector.

During a visit to the fair at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra on Saturday, June 21, the Minister described agriculture as the backbone of Ghana’s economy and called for an urgent national shift toward enhancing local food production.

“Let me thank Citi FM and Channel One for providing this platform to galvanise support and generate the interest of the people of Ghana in agriculture,” Opoku said. “Agriculture is the soul of the economy. It feeds our people, creates jobs, sustains our industries, and anchors our trade. In fact, agriculture is everything.”

He expressed concern over Ghana’s continued dependence on imported food despite the country’s abundant natural resources, calling the situation a paradox that demands immediate action.

“Our food import bill is estimated at over $2 billion annually. Yet we have the land, water, cheap labour, and proximity to market. Nature has blessed us,” he stated. “With AfCFTA now in motion, we have what it takes to use agriculture as a driver of economic growth.”

Opoku also underscored the link between food security and national sovereignty.

“A hungry man is not a free man. To truly free our people, we must feed them. That means producing food in abundance—not just to feed ourselves but to trade with the rest of Africa and the world.”

AgriFair 2025, organised by Channel One TV in collaboration with Citi FM, is currently ongoing in Accra. The three-day event, running through Sunday, June 22, brings together thousands of farmers, agribusiness leaders, students, and policymakers for exhibitions, panel discussions, and live broadcasts across both media platforms.

IGP has impounded over 1,200 excavators as gov’t steps up galamsey fight – Shamima Muslim

0

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has revealed that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has impounded a total of 1,250 excavators at various ports across the country.

She said this forms part of efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey in the country.

“I want to assure Ghanaians that the government, through the IGP (Christian Tetteh Yohuno), who is really now the lead in terms of fighting the galamsey, has impounded 1,250 excavators at our ports,” she disclosed this during her appearance on JoyNews’s Newsfile programme on Saturday, 21st June.

According to Ms Muslim, the police, in collaboration with relevant authorities, are currently investigating the reasons behind the importation of such a large number of heavy-duty machines, adding that the government is also working closely with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to track all excavators currently in use across the country.

“We are working with DVLA to track all these excavators because obviously there are supply and demand issues, so we are trying to deal with those blockages,” adding that “What are these excavators coming to do? And if you have no proof that you are bringing in these excavators for construction works, you don’t dare to clear these excavators.”

Ms Muslim emphasised that these interventions form part of the broader strategy by the current NDC administration to curb the menace of illegal mining, which continues to damage Ghana’s environment and threaten its economic integrity.

The tracking and regulation of excavators, she said, are critical to ending the indiscriminate degradation of land and water bodies.

The spokesperson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring environmental order and holding accountable those who fuel the galamsey economy.

The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West and Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Gizella Tetteh, on Saturday, June 21, made her debut appearance at the 2025 edition of the Ecobank-JoyNews Habitat Fair Clinic at the Achimota Retail Centre in Accra.

Accompanied by her family, Madam Tetteh toured the fairgrounds, engaging with exhibitors and exploring a wide range of building, housing, and construction products on display.

The MP expressed her admiration for the initiative and praised JoyNews and its partners for creating such an informative and impactful platform for homeowners and prospective property developers.

“I’m truly impressed with the quality of products on display and the level of organisation. It’s a great initiative that brings both consumers and suppliers together to promote quality housing solutions,” she remarked.

The 2025 Habitat Fair, which is themed “Home Ownership: Exploring Solutions for All,” has drawn participation from some of Ghana’s leading home and construction brands. Exhibitors are not only showcasing innovative solutions but also engaging directly with homeowners, offering insights and deals tailored to their needs.

Visitors have also noted that one of the standout features of the Achimota edition is how “dust-free” and convenient the event has been. The Achimota Retail Centre’s tiled flooring, combined with its open yet sheltered environment, provides a clean and comfortable space for interaction. Attendees have praised the setting, saying it offers a refreshing break from the usual challenges of outdoor expos.

The Ecobank-JoyNews Habitat Fair continues through the weekend, offering patrons more opportunities to connect with housing experts, discover property deals, and explore affordable home improvement solutions.

TESCON slams Nhyiaeso MP for saying Christians will not elect a Muslim President

Dr Stephen Amoah is a Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso Dr Stephen Amoah is a Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso

Members of TESCON have condemned comments made by the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr Stephen Amoah, in which he claimed that Christians can never vote for a Muslim to become President of Ghana.

At a press conference held on Saturday, June 21, TESCON members from the SD Dombo University (SDDU expressed displeasure with the MP’s remarks, describing then as divisive and unbefitting of a senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The group cited the results of the recent NPP presidential primaries, where Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a Muslim, emerged victorious even in Dr Amoah’s own constituency.

“Let’s go to his constituency in this, in the just- ended elections. The person who said Christians will not elect a Muslim got 35,502 votes. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who he said is a Muslim and for that matter Christians will not vote for him, beat him in his constituency by 35,648.

“Basically all what he said at Kumasi Technical University is shallow, is something that we the intellectual wing of the party we cannot go by and for that matter, in all humility and modesty, we call on him to come out and apologise to the good people of Ghana”, the spokesperson said.

He recounted that on June 20, during a capacity-building event organised by the Kumasi Technical University TESCON chapter, Dr Amoah made statements that, in their view, promoted religious bigotry.

“We believe those statements were highly divisive. He said, and I quote ‘Muslims are not from God,’ and further claimed that Christians will not elect a Muslim leader. As the intellectual wing of the party, we want to go on record to say we do not believe in division, and we strongly reject any comment that promotes religious discrimination in this country”, the spokesperson added.

The group emphasised that the platform at Kumasi Technical University was meant to be one that inspired young people, not one used to sow division.

“In all humility and modesty, we call on Dr Stephen Amoah to retract his comments and issue an unqualified apology to the good people of Ghana and to TESCON. That event was meant to uplift students, many of whom are struggling with personal and academic challenges. Instead, he chose to divide us”, he noted.

During his engagement with the student wing of the party in Kumasi, Dr Amoah reportedly told the audience that Christians in Ghana would not vote for a Muslim to become President.

TESCON has made it clear that such views do not represent the collective spirit of inclusiveness within the NPP or the values of Ghana’s democracy.

How Egypt is using sports to boost its global image and economy

Egypt is turning to sports as a key tool to improve its international image, strengthen diplomatic ties, and support long-term development goals.

This strategy is part of a growing global trend where countries use cultural influence, not force, to achieve foreign policy aims.

Through sports diplomacy, Egypt is promoting national pride, attracting tourists, and creating opportunities for economic growth. At the heart of this plan is the global success of its athletes and it’s a Mohamed Salah, Egypt’s top football star, plays a major role in this effort.

His success in the English Premier League has brought international attention to Egypt.

His image is widely used in local campaigns to promote tourism, investment, and national values. His reputation for discipline, humility, and charity has helped shape a positive view of Egypt abroad.

Beyond football, Egypt is gaining global recognition in squash. Players like world number one Ali Farag continue to dominate, and international squash events hosted in Egypt, including those near the Pyramids of Giza, attract global fans and media attention.

Egypt also focuses on hosting events to boost its soft power. The country held the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2024 African Handball Championship. Plans are in place to host the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and the Men’s U-19 Handball World Championship.

These efforts align with Egypt’s Vision 2030, which sees sports as a driver of economic and social progress. The government is using targeted media campaigns, youth programs, and partnerships with sports bodies to support this plan.

Still, challenges remain. Limited resources and political issues affect how far Egypt can go.

Experts suggest building stronger infrastructure, increasing private investment, and linking sports with other sectors like technology and health to boost results.

Despite these challenges, Egypt’s sports diplomacy is growing. By promoting its athletes and organizing major competitions, the country is increasing its visibility on the global stage and driving economic and cultural benefits at home.

Ghana has enough fuel to last over 2 months – NPA Boss

0

The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Edudzi Tamakloe, has assured Ghanaians that the country has enough fuel reserves to last more than two months, despite concerns over potential global supply disruptions triggered by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, Mr. Tamakloe disclosed that Ghana currently holds over 200 million litres of petrol and more than 150 million litres of diesel, quantities he described as sufficient to stabilize the market in the medium term.

“I can assure the good people of Ghana that currently, as we speak, we have enough stock or reserve to last us beyond two months,” he said.

“With all efforts, we are confident that we wouldn’t have any problem with supply disruptions at all.”

His comments come as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East raise fears of shipping disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for global oil shipments.

On the suspension of the implementation of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, which imposes a GHS1 per litre levy on petrol and diesel, Mr. Tamakloe stated that government is monitoring global developments and will decide on the rollout date in consultation with stakeholders.

“The government is always monitoring global events and will respond in the next foreseeable days. It doesn’t look like there has been any serious disruption… but there will be enough consultation with the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies, among others, before the rollout will come,” he explained.

The new levy, originally scheduled to take effect on June 16, was suspended earlier this week pending further review, as announced by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

0

Former Bahamian professional tennis player Roger Smith has expressed his commitment to supporting the growth of tennis in Ghana, describing the opportunity to give back as “a blessing.”

Speaking at the opening session of the A10 Africa Tennis clinic in Accra, Smith said, “Building has always been a blessing. Like Katrina said, through the sport of tennis, it’s always been something that just wakes you up. And you know when you do something right, because you’re going to get the best out of it.”

Smith, who is part of a delegation leading a two-day clinic for coaches and young players, emphasized the importance of giving back and building lasting relationships.

“Giving back to Ghana, helping and assisting the federation and the coaches, and hopefully a long-term relationship is a great thing,” he said.

“Hopefully we can leave these coaches and the federation with some great experience in their lives. It’s whatever the goal is—opportunities for these kids—and that’s great to assist in that.”

He also expressed appreciation for the chance to be involved and promised continued support in the future. “We can always work together. And I know Katrina and myself will always, always be available,” Smith said.

“So whenever you want any kind of help, we will gladly jump on that flight deck. Please don’t hesitate to invite us back.”

Roger Smith represented The Bahamas at the 1992 Olympic Games and reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of World No. 96 in 1988, establishing himself as one of the Caribbean’s top tennis players of his era

Timeless Elegance Meets Modern Design

0

Lace gowns have long been a symbol of elegance, grace, and femininity. Whether for weddings, galas, or formal events, lace has a unique ability to create a romantic and sophisticated look. The latest lace gown styles incorporate innovative designs that blend classic beauty with contemporary trends, offering something for every fashion-forward woman.

One of the most popular new lace gown styles is the lace mermaid gown. This design hugs the body from the bodice down to the knees and then flares out into a dramatic train. The use of lace in mermaid gowns creates an exquisite contrast between the structured silhouette and the soft, delicate fabric. This style is perfect for women looking to make a statement at formal events, combining sensuality with timeless charm.

For a more ethereal and whimsical look, the lace A-line gown remains a favorite. This silhouette offers a flowing, graceful look that flatters most body types. Modern A-line lace gowns often feature illusion lace necklines and back details, where the lace appears to float delicately over the skin. These gowns are perfect for brides seeking a romantic look or women attending elegant soirées.

Another stunning trend is the lace ball gown. Traditional in its volume, this style has been modernized by incorporating lace in various textures and patterns, such as floral or geometric motifs. The bodice of the lace ball gown is typically fitted, with a full skirt made of layers of lace or tulle, creating a luxurious effect. This dramatic yet graceful design is often seen at high-profile events and is a popular choice for brides who want a fairytale wedding gown.

For a chic, understated look, lace sheath gowns are gaining popularity. These gowns, which fit close to the body, are often enhanced with intricate lace patterns that add texture and depth to the fabric. The simple elegance of a lace sheath gown makes it versatile enough to be worn at both formal occasions and cocktail parties. Some sheath designs also incorporate **lace sleeves**, adding a touch of sophistication and coverage while still maintaining a sexy allure.

The lace off-the-shoulder gown is another modern twist on a classic favorite. Featuring delicate lace sleeves or a lace neckline that falls just below the shoulders, this style creates a feminine and flattering silhouette. Often seen in both short and long designs, this gown combines the sensuality of exposed skin with the softness of lace, making it ideal for romantic evenings and semi-formal events.

Finally, lace tiered gowns have made a significant comeback. These gowns feature layers of lace that cascade down in tiers, creating a playful yet elegant look. The lightness of the lace, paired with a layered structure, gives these gowns a dynamic quality. This style is particularly striking in pastel or neutral shades, allowing the intricate lace patterns to stand out.

In conclusion, new beautiful lace gown styles are all about blending tradition with modernity. From mermaid silhouettes to flowing A-lines, lace remains a fabric that symbolizes elegance and femininity. The latest designs offer versatility, sophistication, and a sense of romance, making lace gowns a timeless choice for any occasion.

CAMFED Ghana, PPAG team up to boost reproductive education among the youth

0

By Isaac Arkoh

Abura Dunkwa (C/R), June 21, GNA – The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED Ghana) and the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) have jointly signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and launched a six-month pilot programme to promote Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) across the country.

The MoU was signed at Abura Dunkwa in the Central Region.

The SRH advocacy initiative aims to improve the health, rights and well-being of young people, particularly adolescent girls and individuals with special needs by providing better access to quality SRH information and services.

The campaign targets the youth aged 10 to 24, both in and out of school and will be implemented in a district each in three regions in the Country.

They are Bole in the Savannah Region, Sekyere East in the Ashanti Region and Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese in the Central Region.

To lead the move, 26 peer educators per district have been trained and will recruit additional peers to strengthen the SRH advocacy throughout the programme’s duration.

The launch served to formally introduce the SRH pilot programme to key stakeholders, including representatives from the media, education, health sectors, traditional and religious leaders, students, and the general public.

Attendees were briefed on the programme’s objectives, structure and implementation strategy, and were encouraged to ask questions, share ideas and provide feedback to ensure the initiative’s success and long-term sustainability.

This project is being carried out in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Health Service (GHS), and other community partners, with technical and financial support from CAMFED Ghana and PPAG.

Speaking at the launch of the programme, Madam Fairuza Abdul-Rashid Safian, Executive Director of CAMFED Ghana, explained that the initiative was developed in response to growing evidence highlighting the challenges young people faced in making informed decisions about their reproductive health.

These challenges include limited access to accurate information, stigma and insufficient youth-friendly services.

She emphasised that girls and young women must make informed life choices relating to SRH.

This will help improve both the quality and availability of SRH services and health facilities, ensuring greater access to gender-responsive, youth-friendly, confidential and inclusive care.

Madam Safian further noted that the initiative would foster an enabling and supportive environment for SRH through strategic partnerships and collaborations, encouraging young people to make bold decisions that positively impacted their lives.

Additionally, the programme will generate valuable lessons and evidence to guide the expansion of SRH interventions within schools and communities.

Madam Abena Adubea Amoah, Executive Director of PPAG, reaffirmed her office’s commitment to providing girls with age and gender-appropriate information on sexuality and reproductive rights.

She encouraged young people, especially girls, not to feel shy, intimidated, or demeaned when seeking sexual and reproductive health information from trusted institutions and agencies.

Madam Amoah said  sexuality education for adolescents was beyond just sex and classroom lessons.

She urged parents to be patient with their daughters, recognising that children have diverse qualities and behaviours that might sometimes seem challenging.

She warned that if parents did  not  educate their children at home, these young people might turn to friends or the internet for information, which could put their lives and well-being at risk.

Dr Juliet Otami, the Regional Director of Education, along with several officials from the Ghana Health Service, took turns to address the gathering and commended CAMFED and its partners for their strong leadership in adolescent sexual and reproductive health education across the country.

They emphasised the importance of empowering the youth, particularly girls, highlighting the positive impact it could have on their lives.

Additionally, they expressed concern over the rising incidents of drug abuse among young people, noting its detrimental effects, particularly on girls, which have contributed to increased school dropout rates.

MMDCEs Election will improve accountability, deepen governance – Sogakope residents

0

By Kekeli K. Blamey

Sogakope (V/R), June 21, GNA – Some residents of Sogakope in the South Tongu District, have expressed their support for President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed commitment to reform local governance in the country, saying that will deepen accountability.

They were particularly happy over his plan to introduce the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) starting 2026.

Mr. Mahama made the announcement on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, during the opening of the 2025 Orientation Programme for MMDCEs in Accra, where he revealed that the National Review Committee on local governance was finalising consultations on proposed constitutional changes, including the direct election of District Chief Executives and granting greater financial control to local assemblies.

According to the President, recent public surveys indicate broad national support for the reforms, suggesting that the current crop of MMDCEs may be the last to be appointed rather than elected.

This announcement has been met with enthusiasm in Sogakope, where residents believe such reforms would significantly improve accountability and local development.

Speaking to community members, many expressed the hope that that long-awaited shift would give them a stronger voice in who governs at the local level.

“When MMDCEs are appointed, they tend to be more loyal to the president than to the people. If we elect them like our Members of Parliament, they will know they must deliver to earn our votes again,” said Madam Esi Adzo, a market trader in Sogakope.

Mr. Seth Kwabla, a teacher, echoed this view, stating, “This will push them to work harder, knowing that the people have the power to vote them out. But it shouldn’t just be about voting—we need laws that allow candidates from different parties to contest freely.”

Similarly, Madam Akosua Kumea, a seamstress in the community, emphasized the importance of a solid legal framework, saying, “President Mahama must ensure that he follows through with legislation.

“We want this to be just like the presidential and parliamentary elections—free, fair, and open to all,” she added.

The Ghana News Agency observed that the idea of electing MMDCEs has been a topic of debate in the district as President Mahama’s firm timeline of 2026 for the implementation, along with the ongoing constitutional review process, signals a renewed push toward decentralization and stronger grassroots democracy.

The call for reform appears to be gaining momentum, as citizens look forward to a more accountable and participatory system of local governance.

Menstruation is not a curse

0

By Emmanuel Nyatsikor

Adaklu Kodzobi (V/R), June 21, GNA – Miss Linda Ahinma Effisah, a Nursing Student of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Friday stated that menstruation was not a curse nor a disease.

She said it was a natural and healthy bodily process in the life of every woman.

She advised adolescent girls to disregard the numerous myths and misconceptions people had about it.

Miss Effisah stated this when some level one Nursing students of UHAS donated over one hundred sanitary pads to adolescent girls of Adaklu Kodzobi District Assembly Basic School in the Adaklu district.

She noted that they were moved by the plight of teenage girls who could not afford to buy sanitary pads so came together to form a Non-governmental organization known as “Nurses for Dignity” to assist such girls.

Miss Effisah said it was also to educate them on how to manage their menstruation period safely and confidently, adding “menstrual hygiene is very important.”

She noted that some girls still used napkins and rags during their menstruation, which she said was unhealthy practice.

She stated that this could cause cervical cancer as these items were often not washed properly before being reused.

Miss Effisah advised the girls to always wash their hands with soap before putting on the pads, adding “our hands carry a lot of germs so wash your hands well so as not to be infected by those germs.”

She also urged them to use cotton pants during their menstruation period.

Miss Effisah called on religious bodies, philanthropists and NGOs to help provide girls, especially those in school with “this important item.”

Mr. Charles Kugbeadzor, Headteacher of the school, thanked the students for coming to the aid of the girls and stated that it would help boost their morale.

The students demonstrated the proper way to put on the pads to the girls.

A similar donation was done at Kodzobi Ando District Assembly Basic school.

‘You don’t need to bring someone down to uplift others’- Efia Odo chides Keche Joshua

Ghanaian socialite Efia Odo Ghanaian socialite Efia Odo

Ghanaian socialite Efia Odo has taken to social media to lambast Keche Joshua after he claimed that Yaa Jackson sings better than Gyakie.

In a recent post, while praising Yaa Jackson’s new song, Keche Joshua boldly stated that the young artiste is more talented than popular songstress Gyakie.

This statement has since sparked massive reactions from fans and celebrities alike, including Efia Odo, who finds Keche Joshua’s comparison unnecessary.

In her response, Efia Odo emphasised that it is unhealthy to pit one artiste against another, especially when the music industry is large enough for everyone to succeed and thrive.

“There’s enough room on the table for everyone to enjoy. No need to bring someone down to uplift another,” she said.

She further emphasised that unhealthy comparisons are the primary issue damaging Ghana’s music industry.

“This is our main problem in the industry! Everyone wants to be the only one on top when the sky is big enough for all of us,” she added.

BoG sets up committee to reform reference rate amid sub-10% lending goal

0

Dr Johnson Asiama, Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiama, Bank of Ghana Governor

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has established a committee to reform the Ghana Reference Rate (GRR) in a bid to significantly reduce lending benchmarks, Governor Johnson P. Asiama announced at the Digital Academy launch by the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB), Ghana.

Introduced in 2018, the GRR is a key interest rate benchmark used by banks and financial institutions to price their loans and credit products. It was established by the central bank to promote transparency, consistency and fairness in the determination of lending rates.

For June 2025 the rate was 23.08 percent, forming the baseline before institutions apply risk premiums to loans.

The committee forms part of broader efforts to dismantle structural inefficiencies that have kept credit costs elevated, with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) currently borrowing at rates exceeding 30 percent on average.

Speaking to banking industry leaders in Accra, Dr Asiama declared his intention to achieve lending rates below 10 percent before the end of his four-year tenure – a target that he acknowledged has attracted scepticism from market observers.

“We cannot sustain a real sector going forward where SMEs have to borrow at beyond 30 percent and are expected to compete, to grow or to expand. It just does not work,” the Governor said.

The reference rate reform committee represents one of three key interventions designed to reduce credit costs. The central bank is also strengthening the collateral registry and credit referencing systems while engaging commercial banks to improve risk pricing and reduce intermediation costs.

Dr. Asiama stressed the importance of enhanced fiscal-monetary coordination, revealing recent discussions with the Finance ministry on operational improvements. He stated that he has instructed his outfit’s banking department to extend operating hours to facilitate government transactions, citing previous complaints about early closure times hampering fiscal operations.

“Anytime you need to do a transaction that involves crediting government accounts at the Bank of Ghana, just call them. If it is 9 p.m., they have to stay and make sure that transaction is effective,” he said.

While Dr. Asiama chronicled recent gains, he cautioned against complacency – emphasising that “macroeconomic stability is never given. It is earned through discipline, through credibility and through timely reforms”.

The central bank is pursuing three core strategies to rebuild credibility: strengthening its balance sheet through expenditure controls and prudent reserve management; refining policy toolkits including forward guidance and liquidity forecasting; and enhancing transparency to restore market trust, he added.

The event also marked the launch of CIB’s Branch CEO Programme and Ghanaian Bankers magazine.

Dr. Asiama highlighted transformation of the local payments ecosystem, with mobile money accounting for 97 percent of digital transactions by volume and 72 percent by value.

The next phase of digital financial services development will extend beyond basic transactions to encompass savings, insurance, credit and financial literacy platforms.

The apex bank is also finalising regulatory frameworks for digital assets and Virtual Asset Service Providers to support innovation while maintaining consumer protection, the Governor stated.

Governor Asiama stressed the continued importance of branch banking, particularly outside the capital; describing branch managers as “frontline development agents” essential for financial inclusion.

Explaining the rationale behind the Branch CEO Programme, CIB’s Chief Executive Robert Dzato said it aims to develop visionary, responsive and ethically-grounded leadership at the branch level.

“The Branch CEO Programme recognises that our bank branches, particularly those outside Accra, serve as a critical interface between the financial system and everyday citizens,” he explained.

“We cannot achieve true financial inclusion without branch leaders who possess the vision to identify opportunities in their communities, the responsiveness to adapt services to local needs and the ethical foundation to build lasting trust,” Mr. Dzato further stated.

This comes as the central bank has begun exploring machine learning techniques for inflation modelling and credit risk analysis, while planning to collaborate with academic partners and industry stakeholders on research initiatives.

Dzato explained that the Digital Academy will train bankers to integrate technological innovation with ethical practices and customer inclusion.

Black Stars defender Mohammed Salisu has presented an AS Monaco replica jersey to President John Dramani Mahama during an official visit.

Currently in Ghana for the off-season break, Salisu paid a courtesy call on the head of state at his residence in Accra.

As a gesture of appreciation, the AS Monaco centre-back gifted Mahama with a replica of the club’s away kit.

The 26-year-old endured a challenging season, hampered by recurring injuries that limited his playing time.

After a promising start highlighted by a standout performance against FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League Salisu struggled to regain his spot in the team following his recovery.

Despite the setbacks, he managed to make 24 appearances and scored three goals for the French Ligue 1 side, commonly known as “The Rocks.”

Salisu, who has been linked with several transfer moves, is determined to return stronger in the upcoming season. Notably, he was left out of Ghana head coach Otto Addo’s squad for the Unity Cup tournament held in London last month.

NPA pushes for stiffer fines to clamp down on illegal fuel stations

0

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is seeking a review of the penalties imposed on individuals who establish unauthorised fuel stations, arguing that the current fines are too lenient to serve as an effective deterrent.

The Authority says the existing penalty—pegged at less than GHS20,000—is inadequate, especially in light of the increasing number of unlicensed fuel outlets, some of which have caused fatal explosions.

Speaking during an engagement with Parliament’s Energy Committee, NPA Chief Executive Officer Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe underscored the urgency of strengthening enforcement to safeguard lives and property.

“If the penalties are punitive enough, it will discourage those unscrupulous people from setting up filling stations in unauthorised places. We all remember the event that happened at Haatso and the panic it set in the whole system. We are trying so well to make sure that we minimise those incidents,” he said.

Tamakloe reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to stricter enforcement of safety regulations and curbing the establishment of illegal fuel stations across the country.

Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party

Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has called on President John Dramani Mahama and his administration to offer an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for what he described as a deceptive approach to the fight against illegal mining, (galamsey).

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on June 21,2025, Mohammed accused the current government of failing to deliver on its promises to address the galamsey menace, despite making strong public declarations.

According to him, the Mahama-led administration has demonstrated double standards by publicly committing to end illegal mining while failing to implement effective measures or enforce relevant laws.

“The Mahama-led government should apologise to Ghanaians for deceiving them with promises of a committed fight against illegal mining when, in fact, the situation has worsened under their watch,” he said.

Mohammed stated that the environmental destruction caused by galamsey activities has deepened under the current government’s tenure, with water bodies and farmlands under increasing threat.

“If this government was serious, we would not be witnessing the alarming levels of pollution in our water bodies. It is clear that the political will is lacking,” he indicated.

He further urged Ghanaians to hold the administration accountable for what he described as a betrayal of public trust, insisting that the first step towards restoring credibility would be a public apology.

“The government must stop shifting blame and accept that it has failed the people in this critical area. An apology would be the first step toward rebuilding credibility,” he said

Speaking at the opening session of the Tennis Clinic in Accra, organized by the A10 Africa Tennis Foundation in partnership with the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF), Adams noted that, “it’s really exciting, because when we just saw Coco Gauff winning in Paris and we had Madison Keyes winning in Australia, people who look like us — it’s exciting,” Adams said.

“And Francis Kiyofo, Ben Chilton, and Hayley Baptiste going deep in Roland Garros — exciting times. So hopefully our kids are getting excited about wanting to be in tennis.”

She underscored the need to extend this enthusiasm globally, especially in Ghana. “I know we are in America, and hopefully they are [getting excited] in the rest of the world, and particularly here in Ghana,” she added.

“We’re excited to be here to be able to motivate the kids here in Ghana, because as it’s been said, we have to see it to believe it,” she noted.

“Hopefully these kids are able to see it, believe it, and want to be inspired by it.”

“So we’re bringing that energy here this weekend, and hopefully the kids will feel that energy in the coaches as well.”

Africa must build health sovereignty

0

Wamkele Mene is the Secretary-General of AfCFTA Wamkele Mene is the Secretary-General of AfCFTA

The Secretary General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, Wamkele Mene, has highlighted the critical need for advanced medical facilities and quality health services in Africa.

According to him, this will help retain monies that are currently funding overseas treatment, which can be used to strengthen Africa’s healthcare infrastructure, invest in local talent, and build regional centers of excellence.

In a speech delivered during the commissioning of the $350m World Class African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) at Abuja in Nigeria, the Secretary General explained that health services have been prioritised under the AfCFTA Protocol on Trade in Services with the current phase of negotiations intended to expand market access in the critical sector.

This, according to him, will enable African healthcare providers and professionals to operate seamlessly across borders.

“This massive outflow reflects deep structural gaps in the continent’s health systems, particularly in specialized care and advanced diagnostics. By retaining this expenditure, Africa not only conserves vital foreign exchange but also advances health sovereignty, channeling resources into pressing development priorities like education, innovation, and social protection”, he advised.

He explained that the situation necessitates the critical need for advanced medical facilities and services within the continent, a need he believes precisely addressed by initiatives such as the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE).

He said the AMCE flagship facility is a strategic investment in Africa’s future, marking a paradigm shift, delivering world-class, advanced medical care, especially in critical areas like oncology, haematology, and cardiovascular diseases, right here on our continent.

He added that by offering state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment, fostering cutting-edge research, and establishing world-class training programs, AMCE will effectively curb medical tourism, retain vital foreign exchange, and, most importantly, reverse the ‘brain drain’ of Africa’s brightest medical minds.

“This initiative embodies our collective commitment to self-sufficiency and inclusive human development across the continent”. he stated.

Commissioning the facility in Abuja, President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu highlighted that Nigeria is proud to host the largest stem cell laboratory in West Africa, which is located within the AMCE.

Adding that with the planned Medical and Nursing School on the campus, and with partners ranging from King’s College London to the University of Wisconsin, AMCE is laying the foundation for a new generation of African medical specialists who will no longer be exported but empowered at home.

President Tinubu stated that the African Medical Centre of Excellence could not have come at a better time and that the facility will benefit from the investments and reforms his administration has championed, and it is also a reminder that the ultimate measure of a functional nation is the synergy between the government and private sector players to co-create solutions.

BoG justifies termination of a fraction of persons recruited in December 2024

0

The Bank of Ghana has justified its decision not to confirm the appointments of a fraction of personnel recruited in December 2024.

Sources close to the Bank told Joy Business that the action was based on a rigorous evaluation process undertaken by the Human Resource and Capacity Development Department.

This assessment, Joy Business understands, was based on what the Central Bank describes as  “considered performance outcomes, alignment with the Bank’s values, and the potential to contribute meaningfully to its strategic objectives.”

The Bank of Ghana, we also understand, argued that the exercise reflects ongoing initiatives and programmes aimed at promoting strong institutional standards and what the Central Bank describes as a human capital strategy, which is in line with its mandate of enhancing financial and operational stability.

Details of Exercise

Joy Business is learning that about 97 did not have their appointment confirmed after probation.

However, the Bank of Ghana is insisting that more than half of the persons who were recruited had their appointment confirmed since they successfully passed the assessment by the Human Resource Department.

Sources say the decision was indeed in line with the terms of recruitment, which was captured in everyone’s employment contract, which indicated that “they are on a six-month probation period, subject to satisfactory performance.”

Background

The Bank of Ghana, in a letter dated 19 June 2025, communicated the decision to the affected persons that their appointment would not be confirmed because they were not successful during the assessment.

According to the Bank of Ghana, it took the decision after it finalised its staff probation review and exercise, resulting in the majority of these personnel engaged after December 7, 2024.

It, however, insisted that only a few had their appointments not confirmed by the Bank of Ghana

The Central Bank is insisting that this should be seen as a routine exercise, which is not targeted against any individual at the Bank of Ghana.

One senior official with the Bank told Joy Business that “Such exercises are routine and form part of the institution’s commitment to maintaining a high-performance work environment.”

The Bank of Ghana, in a separate discussion with Joy Business has also maintained that it takes employment issues very seriously and will apply the “principles of fairness, transparency, and due process throughout in everything it does.”

 Support for the Affected Persons

Based on the letter to one of the affected persons seen by Joy Business and other persons whose contracts were not confirmed, they are taking home one month’s salary in lieu of notice.

According to the letter signed by the Head of Human Resource and Capacity Development Department, the affected persons have also been advised to return all institutional property by the effective termination date of Monday, June 23, 2025.

Spending on Staff at Bank of Ghana

The 2024 account of the Central Bank showed that  Group Personnel Cost increased from GH¢2.3 billion in 2023 to GH¢2.9 billion in 2024.

“Has the OSP Gone to Where Ofori-Atta Is and He’s Not There?” – Prof Gyampo

0

Professor Ransford Gyampo has questioned whether the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has made any effort to verify former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s claims of receiving treatment at the Mayo Clinic in the United States as per reports from ModernGhana on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

“Has the OSP gone to where Mr. Ofori-Atta is and he is not there?” Gyampo asked during a recent appearance on TV3’s Key Points.

His remarks came amid a growing dispute over Ofori-Atta’s failure to attend a scheduled interrogation by the OSP.

In response, Dr. Joshua Zaato, a fellow panelist, suggested that state security could take matters into their own hands.

“National Security can go to Mayo Clinic to find out if he is there,” Zaato proposed, adding that passport tracking could also help determine Ofori-Atta’s location.

The conflict escalated after Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng placed Ofori-Atta on the wanted list for missing a scheduled meeting on June 2.

Agyebeng emphasized that illness should not be an excuse for evading accountability unless it is certified as incapacitating.

In defense, Ofori-Atta’s wife, Angela, dismissed claims that her husband was avoiding accountability.

“Ken does not run away from accountability,” she said, explaining that he has been undergoing cancer treatment.

She further stated that he had offered to engage via video call or have his lawyers respond on his behalf.

The former Finance Minister is under investigation for several high-profile cases, including the National Cathedral and the Ghana Revenue Authority.

WHO urges public to stay safe around water

0

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Ho (V/R), June 21, GNA – The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a strong warning to the public to prioritize water safety and protect themselves and others from drowning.

According to the WHO, drowning is often silent, sudden, and unexpected, making it difficult to detect until it is too late.

Globally, drowning claims over 300,000 lives each year.

“Anyone can drown, but no one should,” it said.

The WHO identified several groups at increased risk of drowning, including young children due to limited risk awareness and lack of swimming skills, and males, who face more than twice the drowning death rate of females, and are more likely to be hospitalized from non-fatal drowning incidents.

Marginalized and low-income communities, where people depend on open water sources—such as ponds, rivers, and wells—for daily needs like bathing or collecting water, occupational groups, such as commercial or subsistence fishers, who spend extended time on water.

Populations affected by climate change, which is contributing to more frequent floods and severe weather events. Notably, drowning accounts for 75 per cent of deaths in flood disasters.

Travel by water, especially during dangerous weather or without proper safety equipment, significantly increases the risk of drowning.

WHO Safety Tips to Prevent Drowning include  learning swimming and water safety skills and ensuring your children do too, always supervising children closely when near water, never leave a child unattended, even for a moment, check weather conditions before swimming or water  avoid alcohol consumption when supervising children or swimming, ensure life jackets and buoys are available and used properly.

The WHO calls on all individuals, communities, and governments to prioritize water safety measures and create awareness to help prevent this preventable tragedy.

This call comes amidst ongoing heavy rains and widespread flooding.

A video has resurfaced online showing the late former President Jerry John Rawlings breaking into a fierce warrior dance during an event to commemorate the December 31, revolution.

The late statesman was captured dancing with great vigour and charisma, to the delight of the audience.

President John Dramani who was present at the scene, was seen smiling as he watched the iconic statesman exhibit his dance moves.

The 1981 coup d’état, led by Jerry John Rawlings, overthrew the administration of President Hilla Limann.

It was motivated by Rawling’s dissatisfaction with the management of the country under the Limann administration, as Ghana’s economic situation, plagued by spiralling foreign debt and hyperinflation, continued to deteriorate without any real promised political change.

In 1992, Rawlings resigned from the military, founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and became the first president of the Fourth Republic.

Rawlings died on November 2020 at the age of 73 after a short illness. b

Ned Nwoko reacts after Sowore tackled him for securing remand of TikToker who claimed his wife, Regina Daniels, has a boyfriend in Abuja

Senator Ned Nwoko has reacted to the publication released by former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in which he knocked the politician for securing a remand order against TikToker, Timothy Gabriel aka Tuma.

Some months ago, Tuma, shared a video where he made shocking allegations against actress Regina Daniels, the sixth wife of politician, Ned Nwoko.

In the video, Tuma claimed Regina has a boyfriend in Abuja where she resides with her lawmaker husband. He went on to claim that he knows the hotel where Regina and her supposed boyfriend usually lodged to do their ‘’dirty things’. He further claimed that Regina’s two kids were not Ned’s.

In his video, Tuma dared Ned and Regina to sue him.

Angered by his comments, the Nwoko’s approached the police and a suit was filed against Tuna. He was arrested and thereafter remanded in prison.

Sowore in a post shared on social media on Friday, June 20, accused Nwoko of fraudulently securing a remand order against Tuma. He argued that Tuma shouldn’t have been remanded as he only ‘insulted’ the wife of a big man and did not commit any crime like R@pe.

Customs cautions public against bringing vehicles without manifest to Ghana

0

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, June 21, GNA – The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Tema Sector, has cautioned the public, especially importers, to desist from bringing unmanifested vehicles to the port.

Assistant Commissioner Theresa Potakey, the Customs Tema Sector Commander, said the practice was unacceptable and, when found out, would be dealt with.

Assistant Commissioner Potakey gave the caution during her outfit’s first Joint Consultative Committee meeting held to deliberate on issues in the sector and to review port operations for the previous year.

She said Customs have realised that especially at the Meridian Ports Services (MPS) Terminal Three, importers were bringing in unmanifested vehicles, as most of those vehicles were not found on the manifest or the bill of lading.

“They are hidden; sometimes when you open the container and you see the way they are hidden, you realise that the main aim is to evade taxes, and this is unacceptable,” she said.

She added that Customs had been seizing such vehicles, stressing that “I want to caution the public to desist from bringing unmanifested vehicles because our scanners will detect them.”

She said normally when detected, the importers were made to pay a penalty for restoration, noting that she would impress on the Customs Commissioner and the Commissioner General of the GRA to double the penalty to deter them.

“It is assumed that these vehicles may have been stolen; why are you bringing a vehicle and you don’t want to manifest it on the bill of lading? So how do you register it if you are even able to go out?” she questioned.

A manifest is a document detailing all the cargo carried on a vessel for a specific voyage, which customs rely on to verify cargo and assess duties and taxes as well as ensure compliance with import and export regulations.

The conflict, which began on Thursday, June 19, saw the women storm the school premises and forcibly prevent the caterer from serving meals to students, affecting both the morning and afternoon shifts.

Despite the disruption, the group returned on Friday, June 20, determined to stop the caterer from resuming work.

“Until leaders reverse the contract, we will not stop coming here,” said Nana Hemaa, one of the women organisers, in an interview with Citi News.

She claimed party leadership had promised them such opportunities and questioned why the contract had been awarded to someone outside the group.

“We cannot understand why they have awarded it to an outsider. How can we guarantee the safety of the food these children are consuming?” she asked.

The embattled caterer, Suzy Oforiwaa, said tensions had been brewing even before Thursday’s confrontation and accused the school’s headmistress of fueling the standoff.

“One of my cooks told me that the headmistress signalled the women to prevent them from dishing out the food. The headmistress was not in school for a couple of days, and when she returned, she did so with chaos. I am told she came with the women and some other members of the community who chaotically drove out the cooks,” Oforiwaa told Citi News.

She expressed frustration at the attempts to block her from executing a contract she says was lawfully secured.

“I followed all the due processes to get this contract. I don’t understand why I’m being physically prevented from doing my work,” she said.

The impasse has left students without meals, raising concerns about political interference in the administration of the School Feeding Programme.

Radio presenter Kwabena Bediako Antwi-Dako says critics should stop tarnishing Dada KD image Radio presenter Kwabena Bediako Antwi-Dako says critics should stop tarnishing Dada KD image

Ghanaian personality, Kwabena Bediako Antwi-Dako popularly known as Wofa 1 has called on critics to refrain from tarnishing the late Dada KD’s reputation.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie on June 21, 2025, during the one-week observation of the highlife musician, Wofa 1 noted that recent social media controversies surrounding the musician’s death are unwarranted.

“There is a session for everything under the sun. But in Ghana when people are called to their marker, you will hear all sort things and controversies happening.

“When are we going to move away from these beliefs? This is a natural death and it is unfortunate we all didn’t expect such a thing to happen because he was a strong character, but only God knows,” he said.

Wofa 1 further called on Ghanaians to celebrate their legends while still alive.

According to him, it is high time Ghanaians stopped recognising the works of legends only after they have passed away.

“It is so painful because it was after his death that we got to know how people loved him. But one thing I will say is that continue to do whatever you are doing because God himself will reward you and people are also watching.

“In this country, we don’t normally celebrate our legends. We wait for something to happen to them before people come out to give out the good names. Death is inevitable because whatever you will do, you will die,” he added.

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially ended the five-year boycott of Peace FM’s flagship morning show, Kokrokoo, following a series of discussions between the party and the station’s management as reported by Ghana Web.

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the NDC’s National Chairman, confirmed the development during an interview on the station on June 20, 2025.

According to Nketiah, the party’s return was the result of extensive talks aimed at resolving the longstanding issues between both parties.

He revealed that the NDC had raised concerns about perceived biases on the show, but these had now been addressed.

He emphasized that the decision to return was a step toward repairing relations, stating, “We want to let the public know that the issue has been resolved. Now, you know what we expect, and we also know what you want.”

Nketiah further clarified that the NDC would be sending representatives to the show, but made it clear that the selection of panelists would remain the party’s prerogative.

“Please do not choose them for us,” he stated, urging Peace FM to respect the party’s choices.

The NDC initially announced its boycott on May 6, 2020, with the party’s Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, accusing the station of consistent unfairness.

However, the resolution marks a significant shift, with both parties now committed to fostering a more balanced and constructive relationship.

Nketiah also called for continued fairness among panelists and emphasized the importance of open dialogue between the NDC and Peace FM.
