Kpandai NDC youth condemn aggrieved group’s actions, call for peace and unity

0

A press conference recently held by a group identifying as the “Concerned and Aggrieved Youth of the NDC” over the delayed selection of a District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Kpandai District has been condemned by a group calling themselves the Real Concerned Youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the area.

In a press conference held on Monday, April 21, at the constituency party office in Kpandai, the Real Concerned Youth issued a statement clarifying that their intention was not to attack anyone but to promote unity and uphold the values that bind the NDC party in the district.

They emphasised their commitment to defending the party’s integrity and ensuring due process in the DCE selection.

The youth, led by Janfour Benipoumchie, reminded the public that the power to appoint a District Chief Executive rests solely with the President of the Republic. Their position, as the Real Concerned Youth of the NDC in Kpandai, is clear and principled: “The President has the right to appoint any qualified, competent, and loyal member of the party from the three shortlisted candidates, should he deem them fit,”

“In fact, we want to remind them that 17 party members in total applied for the DCE position when the three names were published by Tamale radio. The remaining 14 aspirants and their numerous supporters did not rise up in protest. Were they fools? Don’t they also have followers? Couldn’t they have destabilised the party? They did not because they respected the process. Even though it did not go their way, they still respected the process and kept faith. If those 14 had reacted with the same energy and resistance being shown now, would the three shortlisted individuals have had the peace of mind to travel to Accra for vetting? This shows the maturity and discipline of the remaining 14 aspirants. That is what we call respect and love for the party,” Janfour Benipoumchie said.

The youth condemned the use of derogatory language, such as “weak,” “unpopular,” or claims that someone had been “smuggled” into the process, calling such statements unfortunate, inaccurate, disrespectful, and misleading.

“Just take a look at those referring to the party leadership as weak, unpopular, and smuggled. Who among them possesses the qualities that are closer to the rank and file of the party in Kpandai? Every single individual who showed interest in this contest is a proud member of our party and has served in various capacities, sacrificed, and earned the right to be appointed as the DCE of Kpandai. We call on our colleagues to stop these baseless attacks and personal insults. We shall gain nothing by threatening each other. If anything, we weaken our party and give power to our opponents to use against us,” he said.

The youth also condemned the recent attack on the Constituency Chairman, Mr. Kwame Bawa, popularly known as “Who Knows”, in the press conference held by the allegedly aggrieved youth on 20th April.

They described this attack as unnecessary and disrespectful, noting that disagreements with a leader’s stance should always be addressed with respect and dignity, to ensure the unity of the party.

The Real Concerned Youth criticised calls for the resignation of the Constituency Chairman, suggesting that such actions only served the interests of a few individuals, not the masses.

“Accusing the Constituency Chairman of betraying the constituency simply because you disagree with the process does not reflect the values of the NDC. The NDC is bigger than a few individuals’ interests. We also take serious issue with the threat issued to the President that if the President does not choose from the three names, the NDC in Kpandai will be ‘dead and buried.’ How can a few individuals from a polling station we always lose threaten the movement to appoint an individual of their interest as the DCE?” Janfour added.

They assured the regional and national leadership that the views of the Real Concerned Youth in Kpandai represented the majority of NDC members in the district. They made it clear that the voices of the self-proclaimed aggrieved youth, who had not even won their own polling station, should not be taken seriously.

The Real Concerned NDC Youth in Kpandai expressed confidence that the NDC in the district is alive, strong, and reshaping. They called for the appointment of a DCE who would support the resetting agenda of President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government—someone who could play a role in moving the district forward, regardless of whether they were from the original shortlist.

The youth also reiterated their support for the careful and thoughtful approach taken by the national leadership, as outlined by the National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who had addressed the issue of delays in MMDCE appointments.

They reminded everyone that the leadership has received multiple petitions and concerns from across the country and is taking its time to vet, consult, and appoint the most suitable candidate.

In conclusion, the Real Concerned NDC Youth in Kpandai called for unity within the party and urged their colleagues to focus on the party’s success rather than individual interests. They pledged their full support for whoever is appointed as DCE, provided the candidate is NDC, and called on all party members in Kpandai to do the same.

They called on the President, the National Chairman, and other executives of the party to disregard the press conference held by the allegedly aggrieved youth, stating that it was “misinforming, misleading, and ultimately selfish.”

If found guilty, his ill-gotten gains from mining operations must be seized — Kofi Amoah

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, prominent Ghanaian entrepreneur Dr. Kofi Amoah, widely known as Citizen Kofi, has called for legal action against Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), over alleged environmental degradation linked to illegal mining.

Dr. Amoah’s demand comes in response to the recent decision by the government, through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, to cancel the mining lease held by Akonta Mining Ltd—a company associated with Boasiako—due to reported violations of mining regulations.

Through a statement shared on social media on April 21, 2025, Dr. Amoah expressed strong disapproval of the damage caused to the country’s natural resources, particularly the reported destruction of the Nimiri Forest in the Ashanti Region.

He emphasized the need for accountability and recovery of any assets obtained through unlawful mining operations.

“He should be arrested and prosecuted, and if found guilty, his ill-gotten gains (gold bars, cash, bank accounts, etc.) from the destructive mining operations must be seized. Such irresponsible and arrogant activities from unpatriotic political ‘elite’ must be punished and exorcised,” Amoah said.

The Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, instructed the Minerals Commission to revoke Akonta Mining’s license following investigations that uncovered unauthorized mining activities on protected lands.

The findings came after a coordinated operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission, which exposed six sites believed to be operating outside legal boundaries.

These activities were traced back to Akonta Mining.

At a media briefing on April 21, 2025, Minister Buah revealed that local residents had reported coercive tactics allegedly used by the company to seize farmlands, which prompted an intelligence-led raid on April 17, 2025.

The crackdown took place in Compartment 49 and lasted about 12 hours.

Authorities made 51 arrests—comprising eight foreign nationals and 43 Ghanaians.

They also impounded approximately 30 excavators (five of which were recovered and secured), seized firearms including pump-action and single-barrel guns, and confiscated vehicles and various mining tools.

All individuals detained during the operation have since been transferred to the capital, where they remain in police custody pending legal proceedings.

Pope Francis remembered by Apostolic Nunciature in Ghana for legacy of mercy, peace and human dignity

0

The Apostolic Nunciature in Ghana has described the late Pope Francis as a tireless advocate for human dignity whose pontificate was defined by a gospel of mercy, fraternity and peace, following the Vatican’s confirmation of his death on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025.

A statement released by the Apostolic Nunciature in Ghana –  the official embassy of the Holy See (the Vatican) – in Accra, highlighted the deep spiritual impact the Holy Father had not only on the global Catholic community but on humanity at large.

“The Holy Father devoted his entire pontificate to the service of the universal Church, promoting the Gospel of mercy, fraternity, and peace,” the Nunciature said. “His pastoral leadership, spiritual depth, and tireless commitment to the dignity of every human person have left an indelible mark on the life of the Church and on humanity.”

Throughout his 12-year tenure as leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis championed the plight of the poor, refugees, and marginalised communities, urging the world to see the divine in every person. His teachings often focused on compassion, social justice, and the need for dialogue across religions and cultures.

In Ghana, Catholic leaders and faithful have praised Pope Francis for being a “people’s pope,” whose humility and reformist vision resonated strongly across Africa. From his encyclical Fratelli Tutti on human fraternity to Laudato Si’, his call for environmental stewardship, the Pope’s messages found a receptive audience on the continent.

The Nunciature’s statement also described Pope Francis as a spiritual giant whose commitment to the poor and the voiceless elevated the Church’s moral responsibility in today’s world. His consistent emphasis on mercy over judgment challenged traditional power structures within the Church and inspired a generation of young Catholics to embrace social activism grounded in faith.

Ghana’s Catholic community, which forms part of the country’s religious landscape, is expected to organise a series of liturgical commemorations in the coming days. The Nunciature noted that further details on memorial services and acts of homage would be announced in due course.

As tributes pour in from across the globe, Ghanaians of all faiths are reflecting on a papacy that bridged divides, challenged indifference, and called the world to a deeper sense of shared humanity.

In mourning the Pope’s passing, the Nunciature renewed its expression of “deep spiritual closeness and gratitude to the good people of Ghana,” reaffirming the unifying vision of the late Pontiff and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.

Ghana to experience lesser impact on US tariff

Fitch Solutions on Ghana's impact amid US import tariff Fitch Solutions on Ghana’s impact amid US import tariff

UK-based research firm, Fitch Solutions, has projected that Ghana is expected to be among the least affected economies in Sub-Saharan Africa Following the latest US tariff measures announced by President Donald Trump.

In a regional ranking published by the UK-based firm, Ghana is placed 42nd in terms of vulnerability to the new US tariff regime, suggesting a comparatively limited exposure relative to peers.

The country faces an effective reciprocal tariff rate of 10%, with cocoa, textiles, and selected agricultural exports cited as the most impacted sectors.

Fitch’s “Effective US Reciprocal Tariff Rates” index incorporates not only headline duties but also considers exemptions and sector-specific levies.

The index highlights that the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Sao Tome and Principe, Niger and Eritrea will face the greatest tariff pressures in the Sub-Saharan region.

Equatorial Guinea, by contrast, is forecast to be the least affected among the 48 Sub-Saharan economies assessed.

The broader Sub-Saharan African region, however, may experience renewed macroeconomic pressure, particularly among oil-exporting countries, amid a sharp decline in crude prices.

Brent crude has fallen nearly 15% since April 2, 2025, with analysts warning of further downside risks tied to weakening global demand and OPEC+’s decision to increase supply by restoring previously cut volumes.

“We believe that SSA’s oil-exporting markets will come under significant pressure should global oil prices fail to recover. Among the larger markets, Angola and Nigeria are particularly vulnerable given their structural dependence on oil as a source of both government revenue and foreign exchange,” Fitch noted.

While Ghana appears shielded from the worst effects, analysts warn that targeted sectors such as cocoa and textiles, both of which form a meaningful part of Ghana’s export base, may still face disruptions, especially if key US buyers diversify sourcing to avoid elevated costs.

Impact of Ghana’s monetary policy rate hike to 28% on SMEs

0

In response to macroeconomic problems and inflationary pressures, the Bank of Ghana’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) increased the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by 100 basis points (bps) to 28.0%.

High inflation, exchange rate volatility, and fiscal deficits have all weighed heavily on Ghana’s economic stability, prompting the decision.

While the change is meant to enhance the economy in the long run, it will have a substantial immediate impact on small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and their owners.

Understanding the repercussions of this rate hike is critical because SMEs are the backbone of Ghana’s economy, accounting for a large portion of employment and GDP.

The following are keyways this hike will influence SMEs and company owners in Ghana.

Increased cost of borrowing

One of the direct repercussions of the MPR hike is higher loan rates from commercial banks.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that rely on bank loans to fund operations, expansion, or inventory purchases will face higher interest rates.

This will make credit more expensive, reducing firms’ capacity to obtain much-needed finance.

The increased cost of borrowing may result in cash flow difficulties, impeding growth and expansion initiatives.

For instance, a Kumasi furniture maker requesting a GH₵200,000 loan at 30% interest (up from 27%) now pays GH₵60,000/year instead of GH₵54,000.

This results in a decreasing profit. Furthermore, market participants utilizing overdrafts pay higher fees, causing some to reduce inventory orders.

Reduced profit margins

Higher borrowing prices can have a substantial impact on Ghana’s SMEs, particularly those with tight profit margins.

For example, a small agribusiness that obtains a loan to expand its operations may discover that rising interest rates raise monthly obligations.

Instead of using revenues to buy more raw materials or hire more employees, the company must devote a greater part of its revenue to debt payment.

Similarly, an Accra retail shop that uses loans to stock inventory may struggle to maintain profitability as payback obligations increase, causing it to lower stock levels.

This financial burden might result in downsizing, limited business growth, or even closure.

To survive, SMEs must consider cost-cutting measures, alternative funding options, and better cash flow management.

Decline in consumer spending

A higher Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) diminishes economic liquidity, raising borrowing costs for both businesses and consumers.

Consumer spending falls as disposable income falls, which has a direct impact on Ghana’s SMEs.

For example, a small restaurant in Kumasi may see fewer clients if residents cut back on dining out.

Similarly, a store in Accra may witness a drop in sales as customers priorities necessities above fashion.

Service-based businesses, such as hairdressers and event planners, may struggle when customers restrict discretionary spending.

With decreasing revenues, SMEs may struggle to fund operational costs, pay personnel, and replace inventory.

To survive, firms must investigate cost-cutting strategies, diversify revenue streams, and increase consumer loyalty through promotions or value-added services.

Limited access to capital and investment

With rising capital costs, Ghana’s venture capitalists, private investors, and banks may become more risk-averse, making it difficult for SMEs to acquire funding.

For example, an Accra-based IT business creating an agritech solution may struggle to attract investors who want bigger returns.

Similarly, a small manufacturing business in Takoradi looking for a loan to improve its equipment may face stiffer lending criteria, such as greater collateral or interest rates.

As banks tighten lending access, SMEs that require working money for expansion or innovation may be pushed to reduce their operations.

To overcome this difficulty, firms could investigate alternate funding options such as grants, crowdfunding, or strategic alliances, while also upgrading their financial records to attract potential investors.

Potential business closures and job losses

For SMEs already facing economic difficulties, an increase in the cost of loans could be the tipping point that leads to business closures.

Businesses that cannot sustain operations due to excessive debt costs and dwindling sales may be forced to close.

This, in turn, will result in job losses, affecting livelihoods and raising unemployment rates in Ghana.

Conclusion

The 100-basis point hike in Ghana’s Monetary Policy Rate to 28.0% creates a tough environment for SMEs and business owners.

While the policy action aims to manage inflation and stabilize the economy, it comes at a cost: increased borrowing costs, lower profitability, decreased consumer demand, and limited access to capital.

Business owners must adjust by looking into new financing options, increasing operational efficiencies, and carefully controlling costs.

Meanwhile, authorities should consider additional steps to boost SMEs, such as targeted funding programs, tax breaks, and policies that promote a more resilient business environment.

The route ahead is unpredictable, but careful preparation and adaptability will be critical in navigating these economic shifts.

EXCLUSIVE: Here are details of Karim Zito’s contract with Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) are set to appoint former Dreams FC coach Karin Zito has replacement for Prosper Narteh Ogum.

Ghana Sports Paage understands that Zito will sign a short term contract until the end of the season.

The contract will have an option to extend the deal for two years depending on his performance for the remainder of the season.

The former coach of Ghana’s U17 and U20 teams is said to be in his way to Kumasi to close the deal.

Zito, who also serves as the head coach and technical director of Dreams FC, has significant experience in the Ghana Premier League, having managed several clubs including Hearts of Oak, King Faisal, WAFA SC, B.A. Stars, and Medeama SC.

A former player for Asante Kotoko, Zito was part of the 1983 squad that won the club’s last CAF Champions League title. With six games remaining in the season, Asante Kotoko has slipped to fourth place in the league standings, accumulating 47 points. They will next face Aduana Stars in an upcoming fixture.

Under Ogum, the team recorded 13 wins, 8 draws, and 7 losses, scoring 28 goals and conceding 21, averaging 1.68 points per game. Despite their struggles in the league, Kotoko is still in contention for silverware in the MTN FA Cup, where they will face Berekum Chelsea in the semi-finals.

President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the urgent need to construct the Nkawkaw-Obomeng road, citing its potential to unlock the socio-economic potential of the Kwahu area and improve connectivity in the Eastern Region.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Chief of Kwahu Obomeng, Nana Effah Opinamang III, on Saturday, President Mahama reflected on his previous administration’s record in infrastructure development, including the completion of the Nkawkaw-Atibie road.

He emphasised that continued investment in roads and transport infrastructure remains critical to national development.

“The Nkawkaw-Obomeng road holds immense promise for trade, tourism, and local enterprise.

My administration is committed to continuing the infrastructural transformation needed to support growth across all regions,” President Mahama stated.

He also commended the Kwahu people for their vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, describing them as key contributors to Ghana’s economic advancement.

In particular, he praised the launch of the Kwahu Business Forum—an initiative that supports entrepreneurship and empowers small and medium-sized businesses.

President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to supporting development-oriented initiatives and reiterated the importance of infrastructure projects in driving economic progress and improving livelihoods.

Welcoming the President, Nana Effah Opinamang III, applauded Mahama’s legacy of development-focused governance and hailed the Kwahu Business Forum as a groundbreaking, non-partisan initiative aimed at fostering collaboration among industry players.

He described the forum as a platform that enhances productivity, creates jobs, and improves living standards.

Nana Opinamang appealed to the government to prioritise the rehabilitation of the Begoro-Bepong road, noting that its improvement would significantly ease congestion on the Accra-Kumasi highway, especially during major travel periods such as the annual Easter festivities in Kwahu.

He urged policymakers to focus strongly on infrastructure and inclusive development, which he described as the bedrock of national transformation.

It’s Over, Yaa Jackson Reportedly Splits with Baby Daddy, Deletes All His Photos

0

Popular Ghanaian actress and musician, Yaa Jackson, is once again making headlines – and this time, it’s not about a new song or outfit. Rumors are flying that the “Tear Rubber” hitmaker has ended her relationship with her baby daddy, Manuel Gh.

The gossip began when eagle-eyed fans noticed that Yaa deleted all photos of her baby daddy from her Instagram page, including the once-famous maternity shoot that broke the internet. Even more shocking, she unfollowed him, and he returned the favor shortly after.

Sources close to the actress hint that the relationship has been rocky for months. One insider claimed, “They’ve been arguing a lot lately, mostly about loyalty issues and how much of their private life should be public.”

Yaa Jackson and Manuel welcomed a baby boy in 2023, and although they appeared to be happy new parents, it now seems things were not as rosy behind the scenes.

Fans have taken to social media to express mixed feelings. Some believe this is another publicity stunt, while others think Yaa deserves better.

As of now, neither Yaa nor Manuel has officially confirmed the breakup, but the signs are hard to ignore. Meanwhile, Yaa has been posting cryptic messages like “Peace over everything” and “Sometimes silence is power.”

Could this really be the end of one of Ghana’s most talked-about young couples? Or is there more to the story?

Stay tuned. Ghana Twitter is already on fire.

Saying please, other polite words to ChatGPT costs millions of dollars

0

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has revealed that simple courtesies—like saying “please” and “thank you” to ChatGPT—come with a surprisingly high cost, contributing significantly to the company’s electricity expenses.

Altman made the comment in response to a user on X (formerly Twitter) who inquired about the financial impact of polite interactions with AI. He replied that the cost amounted to “tens of millions of dollars well spent,” adding cryptically, “You never know.”

Chatbots like ChatGPT are powered by large language models (LLMs), which rely on massive computing infrastructure hosted in energy-intensive data centres. These facilities are driven by thousands of high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs), which handle the complex parallel processing needed to interpret prompts and generate responses in real time.

The energy demand is substantial. A single AI-generated response—such as a short email or paragraph—can consume up to 0.14 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, the equivalent of keeping 14 LED bulbs lit for one hour. With billions of interactions daily, the cumulative power consumption is enormous.

Globally, data centres already account for around 2% of total electricity usage. With the rapid rise of AI tools like ChatGPT and the growing demand for generative AI services, experts warn that this figure could increase sharply in the coming years.

While some may view polite phrasing when engaging with AI as unnecessary, many experts argue that it actually enhances the quality of the interaction.

Kurtis Beavers, a design director for Microsoft Copilot, supports using respectful prompts. He notes that politeness isn’t just about good manners—it also influences the tone and constructiveness of AI responses.

“When it clocks politeness, it’s more likely to be polite back,” states Microsoft WorkLab, a digital publication focused on AI’s integration in the workplace.

So, while saying “please” to an AI may come with a literal price tag, proponents argue that it fosters a more respectful and productive digital dialogue—an investment, it seems, that OpenAI is willing to make.

Breaking barriers for women in Ghana: Ownership, access and institutional change must go hand-in-hand

0

For many years, the conversation about gender equality in the workplace has focused on empowerment. Women have been encouraged to step up, lean in and seize opportunities.

At a recent Women’s Network Forum event hosted by Absa Bank Ghana, a different message emerged: women do not need more motivation-we need real access, institutional support and a seat at the decision-making table.

Women need to own their success, financial institutions and businesses should provide equal access to resources, and organisations must move beyond the rhetoric to implement real policies that dismantle biases.

The ownership mindset

One of the most poignant points of the event was made by Janet Sunkwa-Mills, an entrepreneur who highlighted a fundamental challenge many women face: self-doubt. Throughout her career, she was repeatedly asked, “Can you?”- a question that subtly reinforced the idea that women must prove themselves in ways men do not.

The truth is, competence speaks louder than bias. Women must take control of their professional and financial growth, ensuring their skills and contributions are so visible that bias becomes irrelevant. As Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel, remarked, “Bring your competence to the table – because results are the only language that cannot be ignored.”

However, competence alone is not enough. Whilst women can own their success, if the systems around them remain unchanged, progress will stall.

Workplace policies must evolve to support women’s career progression. As of 2023, only 18 per cent of employed women were in wage or salaried jobs, and of that number, only 26.6 per cent held senior and middle management positions in Ghana.

It stands to reason that flexible working arrangements, fair parental leave, fair remuneration and structured leadership pipelines are not privileges; they are necessary frameworks for ensuring women can compete on equal terms.

Why financial inclusion matters

Women already play a critical role in Ghana’s economy. According to the World Bank, 65.3 per cent of women participate in the labour force, yet many struggle to access finance. As of 2023, 58 per cent of women entrepreneurs cited lack of funding as their biggest obstacle.

Financial inclusion is critical to overcoming these barriers. This is where initiatives like Absa’s female banking proposition, SHE Business, make a difference. One of its key features is collateral-free loans of up to GH₵2 million, which removes one of the most significant barriers women face when accessing credit.

The programme also includes highly discounted interest rates (10 per cent per annum) to ease the financial pressure on women, as well as comprehensive insurance cover to safeguard businesses against unforeseen risks.

Beyond SHE Business, Absa Bank has several broader efforts that support women entrepreneurs. Through its partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, over GH₵630 million in loans have been disbursed to women at 10 per cent per annum.

Capacity-building remains a crucial part of this initiative. In 2024, a total of 3,492 women, including smallholder farmers, received training to enhance their business skills. Absa Bank also facilitates platforms that grant women access to international markets. For example, the annual Inspire Me Conference empowers women entrepreneurs to reach new markets, connect with buyers, and establish international business partnerships. In 2024, this conference supported 30 delegates from diverse industries to explore partnerships in Kenya.

Another key aspect of Absa Bank’s support for women is the SME Business Clinics, which provide businesses with practical training, strategic insights, and networking platforms to scale their businesses. In 2024 alone, 336 women attended these clinics, representing 41.6 per cent of the total participants.

Moving beyond rhetoric to real reform

It is not enough for companies and policymakers to talk about gender equality; there is a need to implement structural changes that support it.

Some of the most prominent suggestions that emerged from the event included rethinking hiring and promotion processes to ensure deserving female candidates have clear pathways to leadership, creating mentorship and sponsorship opportunities that open doors to senior leadership, and encouraging men to serve as allies in creating inclusive environments.

The reality is, when women thrive, businesses and economies thrive. The data is clear: companies with more women in leadership outperform their peers, and countries with strong female workforce participation experience faster economic growth.

As the event concluded, one statement stood tall: “We cannot wait.” If gender equality progresses at its current pace, it will take over a century to close the global gender gap, and that is unacceptable. Real change requires urgency.

The path forward is clear: women must take ownership of their success, institutions must create access, and organisations must enforce policies that drive inclusion.

Now is the time to accelerate action – not just for the benefit of women, but for the country as a whole.

Stop crying and fight galamsey

0

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, has criticised the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, over his emotional reaction to the devastation caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

His comments follow a press briefing where the minister, visibly shaken by the extent of environmental degradation in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, paused mid-speech to wipe away tears as he described the transformation of once-lush forest into a wasteland.

The minister recounted seeing streams choked with mud and the silence of once-thriving ecosystems — a grim picture that left the room silent.

However, speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Tuesday, April 22, Miracles Aboagye dismissed the emotional display, calling it unproductive.

He argued that the minister’s tears send the wrong signal to Ghanaians, suggesting helplessness rather than action.

“Who ever directed the minister to cry did him a disservice. We didn’t vote for you to go and cry. This is a man that stood in parliament and told the then president in his face that ‘his tenure in office will remain a timely reminder of how not to govern a country’.

“He is the man who said that they had the solution to dealing with this galamsey. In fact, the cabinet minister, Sam George, the communications minister said that if Nana Akufo-Addo was serious, he would end galamsey in one week.

“So, if you are in power and you are given the mandate to stop it and you come and cry, what do we do. it creates a hopeless situation,” he stated.

‘Old women become dangerous before death’

0

The National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has called for legal processes to take their due course in the removal of the Chief Justice of the Republic, Gertrude Araba Torkonoo.

Using a proverbial statement, Asiedu Nketiah emphasized the dangers of blaming the Chief Justice during her final days in office. He suggested that anyone calling for her dismissal might even face consequences.

Speaking in an interview on Radio Gold on April 18, 2025, he stated, “When an old woman is about to die, she becomes very dangerous; anybody who would say she should die might even die before her. That is why I don’t want to add my voice to her court issue. The court should decide.”

He added, “Even before we came to power, I was calling for a reset in the judiciary, the Electoral Commission, and most of the agencies.”

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court adjourned again on April 16, 2025, hearing the application seeking to injunct the President and Council of State from determining whether there is a prima facie case in the petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice.

One of the five Justices presiding over the case, His Lordship Samuel Asiedu, was absent when the case was called. Presiding Judge, Her Ladyship Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, explained that they “have had problems and for unavoidable reasons have to adjourn.”

She thus adjourned the case to May 6, 2025.

NLA boss cautions public against fraudsters

0

The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has cautioned the public against lotto fraudsters, particularly on social media.

He advises against falling prey to fraudsters who claim to possess leaked winning numbers in exchange for money, a deceitful practice that has victimised many.

Mr. Abdul Salam made these remarks in Kwahu, Nkwatia, where the NLA held its Easter Community Draw on Saturday, 19th April.

“A lot of the time, these scammers use the images of Management and Staff on social media, assuring unsuspecting people that they can make them rich in connivance with officials of NLA, and have defrauded several people through this narrative.  If anybody tells you they can make you rich, consider it like choosing to stake your car number. Nobody can manipulate the numbers or find a way to make you win. The National Lottery Authority’s games are meant for development and are purely a game of chance. “Mr. Abdul-Salam said.

The NLA organises community draws periodically to bring the lottery draw process closer to the public and foster community engagement.

Mr. Abdul-Salam emphasised the transparency of Community Draws. “These events, where the NLA’s Draw machines are relocated from the Authority’s Brennan Hall to a community, serve as a platform for the public to witness the Draw Process firsthand, dispelling any misconceptions about the NLA’s Draws being manipulated”, said Mohammed Abdul-Salam.

Mr. Abdul-Salam also urged patrons to share the obligation of responsible gaming by not overindulging to prevent addiction and ensuring that minors are not involved in playing the game.

The NLA Director General thanked the Managing Director of Prudential Bank, Bernard Appiah Gyebi, the Kwahumanhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III; Nkwatiahene and Kwahu Sananahene, Nana Boamah Ayiripe III; Aburihene, Otoobour Djan Kwasi I; Dodowahene, Okukrubuor Nene Teye Kwasi Agyeman and Abotakyihene, Nana Kwame Sakyi Ababio III and their wing chiefs for gracing the occasion to witness the National Weekly Lotto Draw.

NLA’s National Weekly Lotto Draw was presented by ace Presenters, Akwasi Boadi Akrobeto, Robert Nana Kodua, Wofa K and NLA’s in-house presenter, Nancy Awuradwoa Darko, who entertained and interacted with the crowd that had thronged the venue to observe the Draw.

Patrons answered questions and others who won received souvenirs.

NLA Good Causes Foundation Donates Items To Chiefs Of Kwahu

In line with tradition, as a gesture of solidarity, and in accordance with the Arts and Culture Pillar of the NLA’s Good Causes Foundation, a team, led by the Deputy Director-General, Eric Yeboah Wadie, presented items to the Kwahumanhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III and Nkwatiahene, Nana Boamah Ayiripe III., in support of the Easter festivities. The items included packs of water, cartons of drinks, and cash donations.

The chiefs thanked the Deputy Director-General and the Management of NLA for honouring them by celebrating Easter with the Kwahu people and bringing the Draw to their community.

They also congratulated Eric Yeboah Wadie, a native of Kwahu, on his appointment as Deputy Director-General. They wished him success in this new role and urged him to conduct himself creditably to bring honour to his community.

The Arts and Culture Pillar of the NLA Good Causes Foundation celebrates and supports projects safeguarding and protecting Ghanaian cultural events and educational programs.

Is Mahama also a traitor for meeting Akufo-Addo – Koku Anyidoho questions

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and President John Mahama Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and President John Mahama

A former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has reacted to the recent meeting between President John Dramani Mahama and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at Kwahu.

In a social media post on April 21, 2025, he recalled being labelled a traitor for associating with the then-President Akufo-Addo in efforts to rehabilitate the Asomdwee Park, the final resting place of the late President Professor John Fiifi Atta Mills, who served on the ticket of the NDC.

He questioned the double standards in his post and wrote, “So, is President John Mahama a traitor for visiting President Akufo-Addo? Certainly not! Ghana belongs to all Ghanaians. So, I committed no crime in begging President Akufo-Addo to build Asomdwee Park.”

Anyidoho emphasised the need to rise above partisan politics when it comes to national development and honouring the legacy of past leaders.

Anyidoho stated that he committed no crime by lobbying then-President Akufo-Addo to rehabilitate Asomdwee Park, the final resting place of the late President Professor John Fiifi Atta Mills, who served on the ticket of the NDC.

He says Ghana belongs to all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation.

A notable moment unfolded during this year’s Kwahu Easter celebrations when Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo crossed paths with John Dramani Mahama.

The encounter was shared on Akufo-Addo’s official Facebook page on Sunday, April 20, 2025, with the caption, “On Sunday, April 20 2025, the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and I met on the lush landscape of Kwahu, where, for nearly two decades, I have consecutively visited to mark the sacred period of Easter.”

President Mahama was in Mpraeso to attend the 2nd edition of the Kwahu Business Forum, which took place on Saturday, April 19, 2025.

Meanwhile, the Kwahu Easter festival, which began as an annual homecoming for the people of Kwahu in the Eastern Region, has gradually evolved into a vibrant celebration that attracts adventurers and culture enthusiasts from across Ghana and beyond.

Each year, hundreds make the journey to the serene Kwahu mountains to take part in various fun-filled activities that blend tradition, business, and entertainment.

The race for the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League title has gotten intense and interesting at the end of Week 28.

Clubs were in action over the weekend and fought for points for different reasons.

At the end of the eight games played on the matchday, Bibiani Gold Stars remain top of the league table with 53 points.

Wontumi’s ill-gotten gains, gold bars, and bank accounts must be seized if found guilty – Citizen Kofi

0

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Ghanaian business mogul Dr Kofi Amoah, popularly known as Citizen Kofi, has called for the prosecution of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to Dr Amoah, Wontumi should face the law for his alleged involvement in destroying forest reserves, particularly the Nimiri Forest in the Ashanti Region.

His comments follow the government’s directive, through the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Armah Kofi Buah, instructing the Minerals Commission to revoke the mining lease of Akonta Mining, a company owned by Wontumi, over alleged breaches.

In a social media post on April 21, 2025, Dr Amoah stated, “He should be arrested and prosecuted, and if found guilty, his ill-gotten gains (gold bars, cash, bank accounts, etc.) from the destructive mining operations must be seized. Such irresponsible and arrogant activities from unpatriotic political ‘elite’ must be punished and exorcised.”

Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has asked the Minerals Commission to revoke the mining license of Akonta Mining Ltd over illegal operations.

According to him, a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the discovery of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.

Akonta Mining Ltd is owned by NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

During a press briefing on April 21, 2025, the minister said: “Some interviews with a few residents indicate that the modus operandi of Akonta Mining is to use force to enter and destroy even the farmlands and produce of poor farmers in the area.

“Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (April 17 2025), an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.”

According to the minister, the operation in Compartment 49, which began at 5 AM and lasted a whopping 12 hours, resulted in:

* 51 arrests (8 Chinese, 39 Ghanaian men, 4 Ghanaian women)

* Seizure of about 30 excavators, 5 recovered and impounded at the operation base

* 2 Pump-action guns loaded with 5 and 2 rounds of BB cartridges each, one single-barrel gun retrieved

* Confiscation of 2 Toyota Hilux pickups, 1 Toyota RAV4, four motorbikes, and a cache of mining equipment.

He added that all suspects have been transported to Accra and are in the custody of the Ghana Police Service, pending prosecution.

Is the Vatican ready for an African Pope? Ghana’s Turkson among leading contenders

0

As speculation grows over the successor of Pope Francis following his passing on Monday, April 21, Ghana’s own Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson is emerging as one of the top contenders to lead the Catholic Church — a development that could mark a historic moment for both the Vatican and Africa.

The next pope, who will become the 267th leader of the global Catholic Church, will shape the direction of more than 1.5 billion Catholics worldwide, including Ghana’s strong and growing Catholic population.

The decision carries immense weight, particularly as the Church grapples with issues such as LGBTQ+ rights, women’s roles, climate change, and its presence in the developing world.

While the conclave — the secretive election process among Cardinals — is famously unpredictable, many eyes are on Cardinal Turkson, who would become the first Black Pope if chosen.

Who is Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson?

Born in Western Ghana and once the Archbishop of Cape Coast, 76-year-old Cardinal Turkson has long been a respected voice within the Vatican. He has held several high-profile roles under Pope Francis, including serving as his peace envoy to South Sudan.

He is widely seen as a bridge between conservative and progressive factions within the Church.

Cardinal Turkson occupies a nuanced position on some of the Church’s most divisive topics. On gay rights, he has argued that while many African countries enforce overly harsh laws, the cultural and traditional views of African societies must be respected.

“We are not in favour of criminalisation,” he once noted, but added that African perspectives should not be dismissed outright.

Though he was a favourite during the 2013 conclave that elected Pope Francis, his candidacy was marred by controversy when he suggested that homosexuality contributed to the clerical sex abuse scandals. At the time, he claimed that such abuses would not occur in African churches due to strong cultural taboos against same-sex relations.

Still, his firm roots in Ghana, deep theological knowledge, and international diplomacy experience make him a strong candidate in a Church increasingly focused on the Global South.

A Global Church Shifting Away from Europe

For centuries, the Papacy has been dominated by Europeans. But with Catholic populations in decline across much of Europe and growing rapidly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, many believe it’s time for a pope who reflects the Church’s changing face.

A potential African or Asian pope — such as Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines — would be celebrated as a break from tradition and a symbol of inclusivity. But for many Africans, a Turkson papacy would be a source of immense pride and a recognition of the continent’s increasing importance to global Christianity.

The Road Ahead

Other frontrunners include Italy’s Cardinal Pietro Parolin, seen as a moderate continuity candidate, and Hungary’s Cardinal Peter Erdo, a staunch conservative. The conclave will also consider figures like Malta’s Cardinal Mario Grech and Portugal’s Cardinal Jose Tolentino, each bringing different theological and diplomatic perspectives.

But for Ghanaians — and indeed many across Africa — Cardinal Turkson represents hope for a Church that truly reflects its diverse followers.

As Catholics around the world await the famous white smoke that signals the election of a new pope, Ghana remains prayerful and watchful.

Should Cardinal Turkson be chosen, it would be a defining moment not just for the Vatican, but for Ghana’s place in the history of the Catholic Church.

Jospong NextGen kicks off sanitation awareness campaign

As part of preparations for the relaunch of National Sanitation Day in May this year, Jospong NextGen, the youth wing of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), has begun a nationwide sanitation awareness campaign.

Jospong NextGen’s campaign is a youth-led initiative focused on promoting environmental cleanliness and sanitation across the country.

The campaign, launched in Obomeng, Eastern Region, on Easter Friday (April 18, 2025), aims to raise awareness about the upcoming relaunch while educating the public on the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

The team engaged with drivers, shop owners, and residents in Obomeng, Atibie, and Mpraeso, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response. Many community members accepted stickers and pledged to support the clean-living message.

The relaunch of National Sanitation Day will establish the first Saturday of every month as a dedicated day for nationwide clean-up activities.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the campaign, the Lead of Jospong NextGen, Akosua Bosompemaa Amoako, explained that the initiative was part of a nationwide effort inspired by the government’s plans to relaunch National Sanitation Day.

She emphasised the importance of keeping the environment clean and healthy.

“We want people to understand the need to dispose of waste properly—not just anywhere—but in designated bins,” she noted.

According to her, Kwahu was strategically chosen due to the massive influx of people during the Easter festivities, making it the perfect place to reach a large and diverse audience.

“We know that during Easter, Kwahu becomes a gathering point for people from all over Ghana. Almost the whole of Ghana is here for Easter, and we know how symbolic Kwahu is during this time. It’s the perfect opportunity to reach as many people as possible,” she added. “That’s why we came here—to reach as many people as possible with this message,” she indicated.

Ms. Amoako underscored that the campaign was just the beginning, adding, “We’re working hard to extend our message to communities across Ghana. The support from the Ministry of Local Government has been instrumental, particularly because of the youth-driven nature of our initiative.”

The campaign has also received strong backing from Zoomlion Ghana Limited (their parent company), The Church of Pentecost, and the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), with hopes that more organisations will come on board as it expands.

“This initiative is not just about cleaning up; it’s about changing mindsets,” Ms. Amoako stressed. “We recognise that many of our sanitation issues stem from attitudes and habits. Through this campaign, we’re encouraging people to be more responsible—use bins, avoid littering, and become sanitation ambassadors in their own communities,” she noted.

“We’re truly encouraged by the enthusiasm of the people,” she concluded. “Seeing them willing to participate, listen, and spread the word gives us hope that together, we can transform the sanitation culture in Ghana,” Ms. Amoako concluded.

Asamoah Gyan explains significance of African Schools Championship

0

Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan has thrown his full support behind the African Schools Championship, describing it as a crucial platform for nurturing the next generation of football talent on the continent.

Speaking to the media during the official draw for the tournament, Gyan emphasized the long-term benefits of the initiative not only for young players but for national teams across Africa.

“It’s a great opportunity for this generation to benefit from it. The other national teams are going to benefit from it. For me personally, I support grassroots football. So, being an ambassador, we are going to do everything to make sure we produce the stars,” Gyan said.

The former Black Stars captain, now an ambassador for the championship, believes the tournament is a game-changer for African football, offering early exposure, structured competition, and scouting opportunities for talented school-aged players.

Meanwhile, the boys draw saw Ghana paired in Group A alongside Uganda, South Africa, and Algeria.

The girls, on the other hand, were paired with Morocco, Benin and Malawi.

The tournament will come off at the University of Ghana Stadium with first game schedule for April 22, 2025.

New HIV infections spreading ‘like wildfire’ in Berekum Municipality

0

New HIV infections are fast spreading in the Berekum Municipality of the Bono Region, recording the highest HIV and AIDS prevalence of 3.34 per cent, Mark Kyeremeh Oppong, Bono Regional Technical Officer, Monitoring and Evaluation, Ghana Health Service (GHS), has said.

He said the figure as recorded in the 2023 HIV and AIDS sentinel survey of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) was alarming, saying the Bono Region, in general, was recording disturbing figures too.

Oppong called on sexually active young people to abstain from premarital sexual practices and multiple sex partners and urged those who could not control their sexual desires to avoid unprotected sex.

He was speaking at the launch of the “Miss Elegance Tertiary Ghana 2025”, a beauty pageant initiated by the Reproductive Needs and Fitness (RENEF) foundation, a health-centered Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

RENEF focuses on reproductive health and promotes gender equality and using the 2025 beauty pageant as a campaign to encourage tertiary students to voluntarily check their HIV and AIDS status and to help bring the rising cases under control.

Oppong regretted that the Bono Region had three consecutive years led in the HIV and High prevalence rates in the country, saying the rate of HIV infections was spreading in the region, requiring urgent research to ascertain the causes of the spread.

Abigail Antwi-Baafi, the Chief Executive Officer of the RENEF, said the foundation was using the beauty pageant to intensify the “Know your HIV status” campaign, especially for tertiary students to test and know their HIV and AIDS status.

“We aim at tackling health and social needs through entertainment,” she stated, and the campaign was also aimed at augmenting the agenda “95-95-95” of the GAC, she stated.

The United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has set ambitious treatment targets known as Project 95-95-95, aiming to achieve 95 per cent of people living with HIV knowing their status, 95 per cent of diagnosed individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 95 per cent of those on ART achieving viral suppression.

As part of the campaign, Antwi-Baafi said free condoms would also be distributed to encourage the public to use condoms and protect themselves from new infections of HIV.

All 12 tertiary institutions, comprising Technical Universities and Colleges of Education, are participating in the beauty pageant.

Government gets bold digital reset in motion

0

Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has highlighted a robust roadmap set in tone to transform the country’s digital ecosystem, enhance transparency and accountability across the sector.

Speaking during his first quarterly press briefing, the minister emphasised that the technology and innovation space remains a critical pillar for economic transformation and youth empowerment.

As such, his outfit has employed measures to significantly harness the sector’s benefits toward development.

One million coders programme takes off

A flagship initiative highlighted is the One Million Coders Programme rollout, a project designed to equip youth with digital skills for the future of work.

The programme was launched on April 16, 2025 in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono and Upper East Regions, aimed at preparing young people for roles in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) sectors.

Mr. Nartey George also disclosed that a standardised digital curriculum has been developed by the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, ensuring equitable access to training across all regions.

“The ministry launched intensive efforts to mobilise partners and secure the resources needed to implement the programme and deliver results at scale through strategic diplomacy and public-private partnerships.

“A landmark memorandum of understanding was signed with the MTN Group, with several other agreements with other private Ghanaian and International partners currently being finalised to support implementation. The programme features 50/50 gender inclusion,” he stated.

Internet access and connectivity

The minister also revealed ongoing interventions to make internet access more affordable and accessible.

He recounted that the multi-stakeholder data cost-pricing committee that was formed in February to deliver a roadmap for reducing data costs. The report has since been submitted, with all three major mobile network operators agreeing to introduce special data bundles tailored for tertiary students, content creators and gig economy workers.

Additionally, network providers have agreed to offer discounted data packages on five national holidays each year.

Wasteful contracts

Underscoring the administration’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption, the minister announced a non-renewal of the controversial KelniGVG Common Monitoring Platform contract – citing alarming cost inefficiencies.

He stated that fees paid under the contract had ballooned, saying: “As of October 2024, the fees paid to KelniGVG represent 84 percent of the revenue accruing to the state. This means the state is paying far more to monitor the revenue than it retains”.

He added that the ministry has also begun investigating irregularities in other inherited contracts, particularly at the National Information Technology Agency (NITA). These include questionable payments to project management firms not directly contracted by the agency.

Also, as part of a broader clean-up, 13 staff under the World Bank-funded Ghana Digital Acceleration Programme have had their contracts terminated due to issues of concern.

“This became necessary to show our zero level of tolerance for any semblance of graft or corruption in the ministry,” he stated.

SIM registration

“We will commence public sensitisation and education toward the impending SIM registration and Central Equipment Identity Register….Ghanaians will not be saddled with having to abandon work and queue for long hours to register their SIMs. The process will be human-centred and technology-driven. This registration is critical for our collective security as a nation,” he indicates.

Legislative reform

To modernise the sector’s legal architecture, its sector minister is spearheading the redrafting of several outdated laws – some dating back over two decades

“To effectively regulate technology in today’s fast-evolving digital environment, I have initiated a comprehensive review of existing legislation and regulatory frameworks.

“We are redrafting outdated laws to ensure they reflect present realities, anticipate future developments and provide a transparent, enabling environment for innovation, investment and consumer protection. I am confident I will lay the revised legislation before prliament in its next meeting,” he said.

The Ghana Innovation and Startup bill, he added, has gained stakeholder support and is nearing finalisation.

Artificial intelligence

On the country’s artificial intelligence blueprint, he said: “Ghana has entered strategic partnerships with key partners such as the British High Commission, UNESCO and other international organisations to support efforts toward Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and blueprint.

“The ministry has commenced critical efforts to digitise the nation’s essential data sets as a foundational step in our national Artificial Intelligence agenda.”

Disinformation

To combat the rising tide of misinformation and disinformation, the minister will present specialised legislation in parliament to create a legal framework that manages false and harmful digital content.

The Cyber Security Authority has also intensified its monitoring efforts, collaborating with security agencies to ensure responsible communication in the digital space.

GIFEC reforms

The minister also noted that the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) has begun an inventory of digital centres and is pushing forward with completing the Rural Telephony Project to improve the digital inclusion drive.

“I have also directed an asset inventory of our infrastructure across the country to ensure that these centres, built primarily under the first John Mahama administration, are put to use,” he noted.

Africa remembers Pope who spoke for the continent

Millions of African Catholics, as well as the continent’s leaders, are mourning a man who they felt spoke for Africa.

Home to nearly a fifth of the Church’s followers, or 272 million people, Africa is becoming increasingly important in the Catholic world, and observers say Pope Francis did a lot to raise the profile of the continent within the institution.

Heads of state reflected the sentiments of many describing how the late Pope spoke out for the marginalised.

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu called him a “tireless champion of the poor” and his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted his “world view of inclusion [and] equality”.

The Vatican says that over the past year, seven million Africans have converted to Catholicism, making the continent one of the fastest-growing regions for the Church.

“This Pope has made a lot of efforts to make our faith inclusive… I remember him with joy,” Ghanaian Catholic Aba Amissah Quainoo told the BBC in the capital, Accra.

“He was really loved by all because of his stance on the poor and the marginalised,” Rev George Obeng Appah added.

At the Holy Family Basilica in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, Rosemary Muthui said worshippers there will remember the Pope as a man who brought change to the Church, especially in promoting equality.

“His love for the African Church was great, and we will miss him,” she told the BBC.

She said she met him when he went to Kenya a decade ago on the first of his five visits to the continent which took in 10 African countries in all.

His last in 2023 was to South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, Kitsita Ndongo Rachel did not hesitate when she broke protocol to personally meet the Pope.

“My heart was beating, I was less than 100 metres away. I slipped between the security agents; knelt down and asked the Pope for his blessing,” the journalist remembers.

“He blessed me, and he blessed my rosary.”

She says her actions were influenced by the Pope’s teachings which spoke to her about what can be done in her conflict-ridden country.

“When we listen to him, we feel that he wanted or he wants justice for the Democratic Republic of Congo, he knows that millions of people have died.”

Nigeria and Kenya have among the highest weekly church attendance rates globally, while DR Congo, Cameroon, Uganda and Angola also have strong Catholic communities.

“One of the biggest things Pope Francis did for Africa was to bring global attention to the continent’s importance in the Catholic Church,” said Charles Collins, managing editor of Crux, a leading Catholic news website covering Vatican affairs and Catholicism.

“He has not only spoken about Africa’s struggles but has physically gone to marginalised areas, showing solidarity with victims of war, displacement and injustice,” said Father Stan Chu Ilo, president of the Pan-African Catholic Theological Network.

During his 2015 trip to the Central African Republic, the Pope pressed home a message of peace amid conflict there.

In 2019, in a highly symbolic moment at the Vatican, the Pope knelt down and kissed the feet of South Sudan’s rival leaders. His trip to the country four years later was a special peace mission that included then Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

And in a letter sent in the last week of March, Pope Francis urged President Salva Kiir and First Vice-President Riek Machar “to prioritise peace, reconciliation and development for the benefits of their people – South Sudanese”.

But the need to make that plea speaks to the limits of the Pope’s power, as there are now fears the country could be on the brink of another civil war.

Despite the remarkable growth of the Church on the continent and the creation of new African cardinals, Africa remains underrepresented in high-ranking Vatican positions.

“The Catholic Church’s future is African, but it hasn’t yet translated into real influence at the Vatican. That shift is still to come,” Mr Collins said.

Now attention starts to turn to who will succeed him and whether an African could take the helm for the first time in 1,500 years.

“An African Pope is not a question of ‘if’ but ‘when’ – because the Catholic Church in Africa is now a theological, spiritual, and demographic powerhouse,” Father Ilo said.

It’s Either Kwami Sefa Returns to the Show or NPP Boycotts the Station, No Fadda Dickson—P.K Sarpong

0

Kwami Sefa Kayi, the ace morning show host of Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, was expected to return to the show at the beginning of April. As the month comes to a close, there are still no signs of his comeback, raising questions about the reasons behind his absence.

Political commentator P.J. Sarpong, affiliated with the NPP, has posed several critical questions regarding the situation:

1. Collusion with the Ruling Party: Is Fadda Dickson, a key figure at the station, working with the ruling party to remove Sefa Kayi due to his own ties with the NDC?

2. Kwami’s Prominence: Is Kwami Sefa Kayi’s status as the face of Peace FM and Despite Media leading to unfair treatment from Fadda Dickson, who may feel overshadowed?

3. Opposition to Appointments: Did Fadda Dickson oppose Kwami’s appointment to the NPA board by President Akufo-Addo, and is he now retaliating by sidelining him?

4. Opportunity for Removal: Has Fadda been looking for a chance to remove Kwami, viewing the NDC’s rise to power as the perfect opportunity to act?

5. Coerced Apology: Was Kwami pressured to apologize for something he didn’t do in order to return to the show? Why is he still not back on air?

6. NPP’s Responsibility: Should the NPP recognize that Sefa Kayi might be facing backlash due to his perceived friendliness toward them rather than the NDC?

7. Silence from NPP: Why is the NPP not addressing this issue, especially since the NDC has boycotted Kokrokoo over it?

8. Patronage Concerns: If the NDC is staying away from Kokrokoo because of Sefa Kayi, why should the NPP continue to support the show in his absence?

Sarpong concludes that if Kwami Sefa Kayi is not reinstated, the NPP should consider boycotting the show as well. He argues that it is either Sefa Kayi returns to Kokrokoo, or the NPP must withdraw its support to prevent Fadda Dickson from bringing in NDC influences to the station.

“We Asked Chinese Men Why They Polluted Our River, Their Answer Left Us Speechless “—Erastus Asare

0

Ghanaian journalist Erastus Asare Donkor has revealed shocking information about illegal mining activities in the country. He claims that Chinese nationals involved in illicit mining operations in the town of Samereboi were working for Akonta Mining Limited, a company owned by prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

In a Facebook post on April 19, 2025, Asare Donkor explained that a recent police raid on illegal mining sites in Samereboi uncovered significant environmental damage, particularly to the Tano River, which has been heavily polluted. He noted that many of the Chinese workers confessed on camera that they were employed by Akonta Mining Limited, a company that has long been under scrutiny for its environmental impact.

Asare Donkor, who has consistently campaigned against illegal mining, stressed that this investigation should prompt a deeper probe into the matter and called for the prosecution of those responsible, including any government officials who may have allowed the mining activities to continue. He acknowledged the efforts of the new Inspector General of Police, Yohuno, and the Minister of Energy, Armah Kofi Buah, for their role in the successful raid.

Asare Donkor concluded by urging for legal action against those involved and called for the restoration of the Tano River’s ecosystem, stating, “Let’s take these people to court and give the Tano River a chance to become clean again.”

This revelation has sparked renewed calls from environmental groups and the public for a full investigation into Akonta Mining’s operations, with many demanding swift government action to prevent further environmental degradation.

Minority criticises government over new mining policies

0

The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of endangering Ghana’s mining sector through a series of harmful policies.

In a letter dated April 21, 2025, the opposition warned that the new measures would stifle growth, repel foreign investment, and trigger job losses.

Addressed to the Ministers for Finance and Lands and Natural Resources, the letter described the recent decisions as “potentially dire” for Ghana’s economy.

It was signed by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ranking Member on the Economy and Development Committee; Kwaku Ampratwum Sarpong, Ranking Member on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee; and Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, Ranking Member on the Finance Committee.

The MPs criticised two new tax measures: a 3% Growth and Sustainability Levy on gross mining volumes introduced in 2025, and an additional levy scheduled to take effect from 2026 to 2028.

“These royalty-like levies are putting several mines already in distress into graver financial difficulties,” the Minority wrote.

They also argued that miners of other minerals, who have not benefited from price hikes, are being unfairly burdened by the taxes.

Even more alarming to the group is the newly passed Goldbod Act, which bans foreign entities from trading and exporting gold. According to the Minority, the law sends the wrong message to investors and violates the 1992 Constitution by retroactively affecting existing rights.

The Minority further condemned the government’s refusal to renew the lease for Gold Fields Ghana’s Damang mine, describing the decision as a blow to investor confidence and long-term commitments.

“The government could have used the renewal to renegotiate better terms, not force out an experienced operator,” the letter stated.

The MPs also criticised the government’s decision to defund 80% of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), a key vehicle for Ghana’s equity participation in mining, calling it a step back from the country’s ambition to secure a meaningful stake in its natural resources.

Additionally, the Minority raised concerns over a violent attack at a mining site that left eight people dead. According to the group, the attack was fueled by anti-investor rhetoric, and the lack of progress in the investigation has only deepened investor fears.

The Caucus also slammed the recent abolition of Community Mining Schemes, arguing that the move has created room for illegal mining. They said the schemes should have been regulated rather than scrapped.

In closing, the Minority urged the government to rethink its approach, restore lease renewals, tone down hostile rhetoric, and implement a clear strategy to support local mining firms.

“This is the time when government must bolster economic stability and attract, rather than discourage, foreign direct investment,” the letter concluded.

Tributes pour in from world leaders after Pope Francis’ death

0

Tributes from around the globe have poured in following the death of Pope Francis, the 88-year-old leader of the Roman Catholic Church, who passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, just a day after celebrating Easter Mass at St. Peter’s Square in Rome.

The Vatican confirmed the Pope’s passing after a prolonged struggle with illness, noting that although he had been discharged from the hospital recently and had resumed his papal duties, his death came suddenly, leaving millions of Catholics and world leaders shocked and mourning.

Many global leaders took to social media platforms, including Facebook and X, to express their condolences and pay homage to a man widely seen as a spiritual reformer and a beacon of humility, compassion, and peace.

His Royal Majesty King Charles in a tribute stated: My wife and I were most deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pope Francis. Our heavy hearts have been somewhat eased, however, to know that His Holiness was able to share an Easter Greeting with the church and the world he served with such devotion throughout his life and ministry.”

Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, General Secretary of the Commonwealth, shared her sorrow in a Facebook post:

“Deeply saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. His advocacy for the poor, peace and tolerance touched the lives of people across the Commonwealth and the world. May he rest in peace.”

French President Emmanuel Macron called the late pontiff “a man of humility,” recognising Francis’s personal simplicity and his devotion to the marginalised.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof remembered him as “a man of the people in every way,” reflecting the Pope’s lifelong commitment to bringing the Church closer to ordinary people.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola remarked on his warmth and universal appeal, saying, “His contagious smile captured millions of people’s hearts across the globe.”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog praised the Pope’s compassion: “Pope Francis showed boundless compassion and dedication to building bridges between faiths. His legacy of peace and unity will endure.”

Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter echoed similar sentiments, describing Francis as “a great spiritual leader, a tireless advocate for peace.”

Scottish First Minister John Swinney highlighted the Pope’s moral voice in international affairs: “He was a voice for peace, tolerance and reconciliation in a world that desperately needed it.”

Leverage religion for economic reform – Ken Agyapong to pastors during Easter Service

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a former MP for Assin Central Constituency, joined the Calvary Methodist Church at Adabraka in the Greater Accra Region for the Easter Sunday Service on April 20, 2025.

Speaking at the event, the former lawmaker emphasized the need for proper collaboration between politicians and religious leaders to advance an agenda for the country’s socio-economic development.

He said, “The people listen to you, Pastors and Men of God more than they listen to politicians. As such, we must weaponize religion to drive development in all sectors of the Ghanaian economy”.

Subsequently, Agyapong referenced a sermon by Dr Mensah Otabil where the preacher unequivocally indicated that changing our attitudes is the only way the country can develop.

According to Agyapong, the statement by the venerable man of God, which includes a call for patriotism and eschewing unscrupulousness, underscores the need for collaboration between pastors and politicians for national development.

It is worth noting that Hon. Agyapong’s entourage included his wife, Christiana Agyapong, two of his daughters, two Members of Parliament, five NPP constituency chairmen, three former MPs, a former presidential staffer, friends, and other members of the NPP.

At Kwahu Business Forum:  We‘re turning the corner  – President Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has observed that there are early signs of macroeconomic stability with inflation gradually easing.

He said with disciplined management, government was restoring a measure of confidence in our economy.

President Mahama (middle) with some ministers of state and invited guests after the forum

“I am confident—and I say this with sincerity—that we are turning a corner. But recovery alone is not enough. We must now set our sights higher — on transformation. We must build an economy that is resilient, inclusive, and productive,” the President said.

President Mahama made this observation when he opened the second edition of the Kwahu Business Forum at Mpraeso in the Eastern Region on Saturday on the theme ‘The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector’.

The forum, designed to serve as a platform for dialogue between financial institutions and private sector players, was to highlight investment opportunities, discuss policy interventions, and chart a path towards building a more resilient and competitive business landscape in the country.

President Mahama’s observation comes on the back of consumer inflation rate declining for the third consecutive month to 22.4 per cent in March 2025 from 23.1 per cent in February.

According to President Mahama, the quest to build a “resilient, inclusive, and productive economy” could not be achieved without a financial sector that works not just for a few, but for every Ghanaian business.

He said the government’s vision for Ghana’s future business landscape was bold and deliberate as it pursues targeted programmes to restore investor confidence by enhancing transparency, cutting bureaucratic red tapes, and promoting a rules-based investment climate.

“We are prioritising sectors that can absorb labour and grow our economy sustainably— agro-processing, ICT, manufacturing, tourism, renewable energy, and the green economy. But our focus is not only on attracting foreign investment. We are equally committed to empowering Ghanaians to become owners and drivers of enterprise,” he stated.

To truly enable business growth, he noted that there was the need to go beyond economic policy and champion a firm commitment to the rule of law, political stability, respect for contracts and property rights, a responsive, corruption-free public service that sees the private sector not just as a revenue source, but as a development partner.

A collaborative effort between government and the private sector, President Mahama said was what Ghana needed to change its socio-economies narrative. “The future of Ghana will not be determined by government alone. It will be determined by our ability to build partnerships—between state and private sector, between finance and innovation, and between leadership and the people,” he stated.

He lauded the Kwahu Business Forum, describing it as a call to action and urged participants to join hands with the government to work together to build a Ghana that is competitive, productive, and inclusive. A Ghana that creates opportunity for all.

The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, disclosed that the government, in collaboration with the private sector, was to establish three state-of-the-art garment factories to reduce the importation of fabrics.

She said each of the factories would have the capacity to provide 3,000 jobs per shift and create 27,000 jobs across three shifts under the 24-hour economy policy.

Mrs Ofosu-Adjare, MP, Techiman North, added that a pharmaceutical manufacturing development policy to offer robust incentives and encourage local production of essential medicine was in the offing whiles a component manufacturing policy to support the automotive sector was being finalised.

President John Dramani Mahama joined congregants of the Assemblies of God Church at Mpraeso in the Eastern Region for a spirit-filled Easter Sunday service, as Christians across the country marked the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Accompanied by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and Eastern Regional Minister Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, President Mahama worshipped alongside hundreds of believers in a heartfelt celebration of faith, gratitude, and hope.

In his address, President Mahama expressed profound thanks to God for the gift of life and the peaceful outcome of the recent elections.

He noted that his presence at the church was in fulfilment of a promise made to God—to return in thanksgiving for a victorious and incident-free electoral process.

“Today is a day of thanksgiving,” the President said. “It is only right that I return to say thank you to the Lord for His grace and mercies.”

The Easter visit, which underscored the central role of faith in President Mahama’s public and personal life, drew admiration from congregants and church leadership alike.

Rev Joseph Baidoo, Eastern Region “C” Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, expressed appreciation for the President’s gesture, describing it as an inspiration to the congregation.

He further pledged the church’s continued cooperation and support for national development efforts.

“We are grateful for your presence, President,” Rev. Baidoo said. “We assure you of our prayers, partnership, and readiness to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress.”

Commercial-grade nickel discovered in Oti Region

The find was made during ongoing iron ore exploration in the Gyamurume range by GIISDEC and GGSA The find was made during ongoing iron ore exploration in the Gyamurume range by GIISDEC and GGSA

Potentially mineable nickel deposits have been discovered in the Oti Region—a development that could diversify the country’s mineral portfolio and attract investment into battery metal supply chains.

The find was made during ongoing iron ore exploration in the Gyamurume range by the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) and the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA).

Preliminary drill samples indicate nickel concentrations exceeding one percent—considered commercially viable, raising the prospect of Ghana joining the global race for critical minerals.

While certified laboratory results are pending, officials say the early data is promising.

“We have found iron ore in good quantities, but we do not want a situation where an investor comes in for iron ore and then unexpectedly benefits from nickel as well,” GIISDEC Chief Executive Officer William Okofu Darteh said during a technical visit to the site.

“We want to know the full picture—what minerals are here, in what quantities and of what quality—before we make decisions,” he further stated.

GIISDEC has commissioned consultants to conduct a comprehensive mineral content analysis, expected to be completed by September 2025.

The study will determine the grade, volume and distribution of both iron and nickel across the site.

“We are doing a complete analysis because our mandate allows us to handle not just iron and steel but related minerals like copper and nickel. So this is still within our operational scope under the law,” Mr. Darteh told the B&FT.

Once validated, the findings will be packaged for investors, with the aim of attracting capital into the full value chain rather than piecemeal extraction.

The GGSA confirmed the presence of nickel in all eight drill holes completed so far. “The concentrations observed are within the economic range—in some cases even exceeding one percent —which is considered mineable for nickel,” David Yaw Kuma, senior geoscientist with the GGSA added.

Initial testing was done using handheld scanners, but results from certified commercial laboratories are expected to provide greater precision.

“We used handheld scanners to do some of the initial checks, and what we saw was promising. But we are now waiting for the results from the certified commercial laboratories. Those lab results will give us a clearer picture of what we are dealing with,” Mr. Kuma explained.

He noted the project’s scope could be adjusted depending on the lab-confirmed grades.

“The nickel discovery was not planned, but it’s there; and now we have to evaluate it carefully. We cannot ignore it,” he said.

Nickel is a key input in lithium-ion batteries, and demand has surged in recent years due to the accelerating global energy transition. Ghana’s entrance into the nickel market would align with its broader strategy to position itself as a critical minerals supplier.

The country is also developing the Ewoyaa Lithium Project in the Central Region, which is projected to produce around 365,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate annually. Together, the projects signal Ghana’s growing ambition in battery metals, traditionally dominated by countries like Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia.

Despite the optimism, GIISDEC and GGSA say it’s too early to draw firm conclusions.

“We are not jumping to conclusions. We need the lab results. Once we get that, we will know what steps to take,” Mr. Darteh noted.

“We have something worth looking at, but let’s wait for the proper data. That’s how you build a strong mining sector—by relying on science and facts, not just speculation,” Mr. Kuma added.

Should commercial viability be confirmed, the nickel discovery is expected to boost investor interest in the Oti Region and contribute to Ghana’s longer-term plans to expand and modernise its mining sector. GIISDEC says transparency will be key in investor engagement.

“We want to be transparent with investors. If we are offering iron ore, and there is also nickel, then we must be upfront about it. That is how we build trust and long-term investment,” Mr. Darteh stressed.
