S&P upgrades Ghana’s credit rating from Selective Default to CCC+

S&P Global Ratings has upgraded the country’s foreign-currency sovereign credit rating from Selective Default (SD) to CCC+, reflecting renewed investor confidence and the positive momentum in economic management under the leadership of Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

The announcement, made on May 9, 2025, comes as Ghana makes decisive progress in restructuring its external debt and stabilising its macroeconomic environment, following years of turbulence.

According to S&P’s latest report, Ghana’s negotiations with its remaining commercial creditors are nearing completion, a key milestone that has restored credibility and eased fiscal pressure.

S&P highlights that while challenges persist, the current administration’s firm commitment to reforms is yielding tangible benefits. Inflation, though still elevated at 22%, is steadily falling, driven by a strengthening cedi and lower energy prices.

This progress, according to the report, reflects strong policy direction from the Ministry of Finance under Dr Ato Forson.

Dr Forson’s stewardship has seen the launch of vital legislative reforms, including amendments to the Public Financial Management Act, reinstatement of fiscal rules, and steps to establish an independent fiscal council, measures aimed at ensuring prudent management of public finances.

Despite inheriting significant fiscal arrears, the government is prioritising expenditure-led consolidation over aggressive tax hikes, in line with conditions under the IMF’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program.

The Mahama administration is targeting a primary surplus of 1.5% of GDP in 2025 and has committed to keeping expenditure growth below 10% annually over the next four years, a sharp departure from the 28% average increase seen over the past two decades.

Additionally, S&P projects that Ghana’s public debt, net of liquid assets, will decline from 71.4% of GDP at end-2024 to 47.4% by 2028.

Interest expenditure, once a crippling 48% of government revenue in 2021-2022, has fallen to about 25% following the debt restructuring.

Inflation, though still above target, is expected to ease gradually as monetary policy credibility improves.

The upgrade by S&P is a strong signal to the international investor community and development partners that Ghana is turning a crucial corner.

While acknowledging lingering risks, including election-year spending pressures and external vulnerabilities, S&P notes that Ghana’s improving external metrics, steady policy reforms, and supportive growth outlook justify the new, higher rating.

Reggie Zippy Shocks Fans by Renouncing Catholic Faith After Cardinal Turkson’s Papal Defeat

Ghanaian highlife musician Reggie Zippy has sent shockwaves through religious and entertainment circles by publicly renouncing his Catholic faith, citing disillusionment over Ghana’s Cardinal Peter Turkson’s failure to become Pope in the recent Vatican conclave.

According To Yen, A Faith Crisis Goes Viral

The “Aben Wo Ha” hitmaker announced his decision in an emotional Instagram live session, where he tore his rosary and declared: “If the Church couldn’t recognize Cardinal Turkson’s worth, then it’s not my Church anymore.”The video, viewed over 200,000 times within hours, sparked fierce debates about faith and disappointment.

Turkson’s Narrow Miss

Cardinal Turkson, considered Africa’s strongest papal contender in modern history, lost to European candidate Cardinal Matteo Zuppi in a closely fought election last month. While many Ghanaians expressed pride in Turkson’s global impact, Zippy’s extreme reaction highlighted deeper frustrations among some African Catholics.

Religious leaders urged calm, with Father Andrew Campbell stating: *”Faith transcends individuals—we shouldn’t abandon 2,000 years of tradition over one election.”* However, some young fans supported Zippy, with #ChurchReform trends emerging on Twitter.

Industry Backlash

Fellow musicians expressed concern. Artists influence youth—this could start a dangerous trend,” cautioned veteran singer Akosua Agyapong. Meanwhile, secular activists applauded Zippy’s “bold stand against institutional bias.”

What’s Next for Zippy?

The musician hinted at exploring traditional African spirituality, telling followers: “Maybe our ancestors’ ways hold better answers.” As Ghana’s Christian majority grapples with this unexpected celebrity faith crisis, one thing is clear—the intersection of religion and celebrity culture just got more complicated.

Two women kidnapped in Nigeria safely returned to Ghana

0

The two Ghanaian women who were reportedly lured to Nigeria through a romance scam and subsequently held captive by a criminal syndicate have been safely returned to Accra.

The victims — Evelyn Serwaa Konadu and Anatasia Baidoo arrived safely at the Kotoka International Airport earlier on Friday, May 9, 2025.

“Both women are in stable condition and will receive the necessary medical care. They will also go through standard police procedures to assist with ongoing investigations,” the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department of Ghana Police, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor said at a press briefing.

She cautioned the public about a growing trend of online fraud, particularly romance scams, urging Ghanaians to be cautious when interacting with strangers online.

“We advise the public to refrain from sharing personal or financial information with unknown persons and to report any suspicious behavior to the police immediately,” she added.

“Our deepest gratitude goes to the Nigeria Police Force and the National Signals Bureau for their invaluable support and cooperation,” she said.

What happened?

How 2 Ghanaian women were tricked with marriage to ‘white men’ and kidnapped in Nigeria

Before they were rescued, a disturbing video of one of them bound with a rope and being physically assaulted by unidentified individuals was shared on social media.

Investigations later confirmed that the woman in the video was a Ghanaian national who had been deceived into traveling to Nigeria under the false pretense of a romantic relationship.

Upon arrival, she was abducted, assaulted and the footage was sent to her family with a ransom demand.

Further police investigations revealed that a second Ghanaian woman had also been lured to the same location by the same criminal group.

Both victims were held at the same premises and subjected to similar abuse.

Families of the two women were said to have made partial ransom payments before police intervention led to their rescue.

The successful rescue operation was a result of a joint effort involving the Ghana Police Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and the National Signals Bureau.

Student faces deportation after running red light

0

A Georgia college student faces deportation after she ran a red light, and authorities discovered her entire family has been illegally living in the US for nearly 15 years.

Mexican-national Ximena Arias-Cristobal, 19, was pulled over by police in Dalton, Ga, on May 5, 2025, when she failed to adhere to a “no turn on red” sign.

Ximena Arias-Cristobal, a Dalton State Community College student, was driving without a driver’s license but told officers she had an international driver’s license, according to WTVC, citing the arrest report.

She admitted that she didn’t have the foreign document when Dalton police officers asked her to show it, claiming that her mother had taken it away from her and said she was not supposed to be driving.

In 2010, Arias-Cristobal was brought into the US illegally by her parents when she was only 4 years old during the family’s move from Mexico City to the Dalton area — over 30 miles from the Tennessee and Georgia border.

Because of her non-citizen status, Arias-Cristobal was paying out-of-state tuition for school despite living in the area.

The officer who pulled her over attempted to speak to the teen’s mom and the owner of the car, but neither of them spoke English, according to the report.

Arias-Cristobal was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license and failure to obey traffic control devices.

She was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, a partner of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s 287(G) programme, used to identify illegal aliens in the country.

“This programme operates based on a series of reviews and background checks completed only after an inmate is already arrested for an offence under Georgia Law,” the jail’s operation guide said.

Arias-Cristobal was processed through the federal database, which confirmed she wasn’t a US citizen.

She was brought to ICE’s Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Ga., where her father, Jose Francisco Arias-Tovar, is also being held.

Arias-Tovar was arrested last month [April] when he was pulled over for driving 19 miles over the speed limit, the outlet reported.

The father, who owns his own company, was denied proper paperwork to remain in the US. It was not known if he ever applied for citizenship.

“My dad has his own company, and they called a lawyer to see if they could get a job permit or a visa, and they said that they hadn’t hit that status to get one yet,” Arias-Cristobal’s younger sister told WTVC.

Arias-Cristobal was not eligible for the DACA programme, having been brought into the country a year after the programme ended, according to Hannah Jones, the woman the teen babysat for in the past.

Jones created a GoFundMe to raise money for an immigration attorney and bond for the teen.

Chattanooga, Tennessee-based immigration attorney Terry Olsen called out the family’s detention.

“We do see that ICE is really trying to find any and all methods to say that an international has somehow violated the process and their status. What’s concerning is that when they are being checked at these checkpoints or at the stops, ICE does not have their entire immigration file in front of them, they’re not looking at all of it, and they’re just relying on one item. This is a civil rights issue,” Olsen told the outlet.

Olsen said Arias-Cristobal’s mother will be arrested and deported within a month, and her daughters will be taken with her to keep the family together.

It doesn’t make sense – Manasseh on govt’s decision not to prosecute Chinese nationals involved in galamsey

0

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has criticised the John Dramani Mahama government over its decision not to prosecute Chinese nationals arrested during illegal mining raids.

According to Awuni, the government’s stance on Chinese citizens undermines the fight against galamsey and has worsened the situation.

Speaking at the Anatomy of Returnee Presidency series on Friday, May 9, 2025, he said; “It is even worse now that the government has made it a policy not to prosecute the Chinese. I’m saying Chinese because they are the foreigners who are often asked to go home peacefully. This, for me, doesn’t make sense.

“I’m yet to see anything meaningful when it comes to fighting illegal mining.”

Awuni also questioned the effectiveness of the John Dramani Mahama government’s policies against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

He argued that the government has not introduced new interventions and is instead recycling old policies from previous administrations.

The investigative journalist further criticised measures such as tree planting and bans on illegal mining, stating that they have proven ineffective in the past.

“I’m not very enthused until we see implementation. Banning illegal mining and launching tree and water initiatives — these are not new. I have done stories about tree planting in northern Ghana under SADA, and I know it was a failure,” he added.

It would be recalled that in April 2025, the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, announced that the government is not interested in prosecuting foreigners engaged in fraud and illegal mining activities across the country.

Speaking during an engagement with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, he indicated that government is focused on removing foreign nationals involved in galamsey, which has caused extensive environmental damage nationwide.

ECG commissions 10MVA transformer at Sogakofe to boost power supply

0

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), in partnership with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), has commissioned a new 10/13 MVA power transformer at the Sogakofe GRIDCo Substation in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region, as part of efforts to improve power reliability and quality across key districts.

The transformer, which became operational on Wednesday, May 7, is now serving Sogakofe, Akatsi, and surrounding communities.

It complements an existing 15 MVA transformer at the same substation, which will continue to serve areas including Adidome and Keta.

At a media briefing held at the site on Friday, May 9, Ms Christina Jatoe-Kaleo, the Volta Regional General Manager of ECG, highlighted that the commissioning forms part of ECG’s broader strategy to modernise its infrastructure and ensure stable electricity distribution throughout the region.

“This commissioning is a significant milestone,” Ms Jatoe-Kaleo said.

“It is a joint effort between ECG and GRIDCo to enhance the flexibility, reliability, and resilience of our power supply network in the southern part of the Volta Region.”

She explained that the total investment in the new transformer installation is estimated at GH¢969,867.90.

The transformer is expected to ease the pressure on the existing infrastructure, allow load balancing between districts, and drastically reduce the frequency of power interruptions.

“The new transformer will primarily benefit Sogakofe and the Akatsi districts. It will also indirectly support parts of Keta, Adidome, and even some sections of the Ketu South Municipality, including Denu,” she added.

Ms Jatoe-Kaleo urged ECG customers in the region to support the company’s improvement efforts by regularly paying their electricity bills.

“When our customers fulfill their obligations, we are able to invest more in infrastructure, and this translates into better service for everyone—both homes and businesses.”

Reverend Emmanuel Agbekotse, the engineer in charge of the Sogakofe Substation, noted that the need for an additional transformer became critical due to the increasing demand on the original 15 MVA unit, which had been overstretched serving four major districts and beyond.

“With the growing population and expansion of businesses, the pressure on the sole transformer had begun to affect its efficiency,” Rev. Agbekotse said.

“Now, with this new transformer, we have significantly reduced the load burden and improved operational stability.”

Mr Godfred Awuku, the Volta Regional Engineer for ECG, also emphasised the strategic importance of the project.

He noted that aside from the Sogakofe and Aflao substations, there are currently no other major substations in the southern belt of the region.

“This new addition allows for better load management between Sogakofe and Aflao. It creates a more flexible and robust system that can handle demand surges and respond more efficiently to faults,” Mr Awuku said.

The project is expected to have a direct impact on thousands of residents and businesses by improving voltage levels, minimizing outages, and supporting future development in the region’s southern corridor.

‘The stars aligned for Ghana’s cedi recovery’ – Joe Jackson

0

Joe Jackson is a financial expert and CEO of Dalex Finance Joe Jackson is a financial expert and CEO of Dalex Finance

The financial expert and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson, has joined the conversation surrounding the recent appreciation of Ghana’s local currency, the cedi.

According to him, this success story isn’t just a matter of luck.

He believes that a unique alignment of global economic factors and Ghana’s own internal discipline created the perfect conditions for this rebound.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Friday, May 9, Jackson provided an in-depth analysis of what he describes as a rare moment where opportunity met preparation.

His comments came at a time when many Ghanaians have been cautiously optimistic about the currency’s performance after years of volatility and depreciation.

“The situation is good (sic). We are in a good space because the stars aligned for us and, better still, because of our internal commitments and discipline that we’ve shown this year—we were able to take advantage when the stars aligned,” Jackson remarked.

For Jackson, this alignment is not a mystical phenomenon but rather a reference to a set of favourable economic developments on the global stage-particularly the performance of gold, one of Ghana’s major exports.

“First of all, our central bank has consistently sought to increase its gold reserves. By doing that, it was taking advantage of the stars aligning,” he said.

“In the last eight years, gold has consistently outperformed the dollar-by over 100%,” he added.

Ghana’s gold production and the government’s push toward policies like the Gold-for-Oil programme and the anticipated gold-backed bond (Goldbod) initiative have started bearing fruit.

These measures are aimed at leveraging the country’s gold wealth to reduce dependence on foreign currency and strengthen the cedi.

“The issue of Goldbod and its implementation possibly in transparent and an accountable manner meant that we were going to retain far more value in our gold…So there was that internal commitment to prudent economic behaviour,” Jackson added.

This commitment, he emphasised, is a significant shift in how Ghana has traditionally managed its natural resources. Instead of simply exporting raw gold and relying heavily on external aid, the country is beginning to capture more value locally, through both policy and practice.

The timing of these initiatives, coupled with the global rise in gold prices and a relatively stable global economic climate, helped lift investor confidence and provided the Bank of Ghana with tools to stabilize the local currency.

Jackson’s comments come at a time when international markets are taking a renewed interest in Ghana, and local businesses are slowly regaining hope.

Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has been re-elected as President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) after securing a resounding 100% of the valid votes cast during the Federation’s electoral congress held virtually on Friday, May 9, 2025.

His sweeping victory over challenger Michael Nii Yarboi Annan demonstrates the deep confidence and trust delegates have in his leadership.

Shaib will now serve another four-year term, continuing his efforts to advance weightlifting in Ghana.

In other key results, Kenneth Odeng Adade, formerly the Federation’s Deputy Secretary-General, was elected Secretary-General after defeating Ms. Peggy Crabbe.

The position of Treasurer went to Madam Elizabeth Owusu Agyapong, who was elevated from her previous role as Deputy Treasurer, following a strong endorsement from delegates.

Three additional members were elected to the Federation’s governing board: Dr. Christopher Akwesi Adomako, Prof. Jonathan Quartey, and Benjamin Addy.

The congress was monitored by prominent observers, including Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation and Board Member of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa.

Dr. Abdul commended the GWF for conducting a transparent and peaceful election and encouraged the new leadership to prioritise unity and grassroots development.

Dr. Kyle Calhoun Pierce, a delegate from the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), expressed enthusiasm about the outcome of the elections and pledged his support to the new board, particularly in expanding the sport’s reach in schools across the country.

Representing the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), 3rd Vice President Mr. Ernest Danso praised the GWF for its organisation and urged the incoming board to work collaboratively with all stakeholders.

He noted that weightlifting continues to be a key contributor to Ghana’s medal prospects in international competitions.

In his acceptance speech, Jerry Ahmed Shaib extended heartfelt gratitude to the Elections Committee, chaired by Naa Odofoley Nortey and supported by Mr. Muniru Kassim Mohammed, Secretary-General of the GOC, for their professionalism and dedication.

He congratulated all elected members and reaffirmed his commitment to the sport’s growth, inviting all stakeholders to unite ahead of Ghana’s hosting of the 2025 African Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in August.

Hairstyles for Men and Women: Trends and Timeless Looks

0

Hairstyles are a powerful form of self-expression that go beyond trends and fashion. Whether you’re looking for a fresh new cut or simply updating your current style, your hair can say a lot about your personality, confidence, and lifestyle. From bold and edgy to classic and polished, there’s a perfect hairstyle for everyone. Let’s explore popular and timeless hairstyles for both men and women that continue to make a statement.

Hairstyles for Women

Women’s hairstyles are incredibly diverse, ranging from sleek and sophisticated to voluminous and playful. For a polished, professional look, the bob cut remains a timeless favorite. Variations like the asymmetrical bob or the blunt bob add a modern twist. Long layered hair is another versatile option, giving natural movement and dimension while framing the face beautifully. For a bold change, the pixie cut exudes confidence and elegance, especially when paired with subtle highlights or undercuts.

For those with textured or curly hair, embracing natural curls is a trend that’s here to stay. Styles like the curly afro, twist-outs, and braid-outs allow for creativity and versatility. Braided styles—such as box braids, cornrows, or Fulani braids—not only look stunning but also protect natural hair.

Hairstyles for Men

Men’s hairstyles have evolved to become just as expressive and fashion-forward. The fade cut, particularly the high fade or skin fade, continues to dominate as a stylish and clean option. When combined with a pompadour or quiff, it creates a bold, modern look that suits various face shapes.

For a more relaxed style, the textured crop or messy fringe is ideal. These styles are low-maintenance and work well with natural hair texture. Men with longer hair can go for shoulder-length waves, man buns, or undercuts for a fashionable, contemporary vibe.

In conclusion, whether you’re a man or a woman, your hairstyle is a key part of your overall image. Choose a look that fits your lifestyle, enhances your features, and most importantly, makes you feel confident and authentic.

Bawumia: ‘My early concession was to save Ghana from unnecessary tension’

0

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice-President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 flagbearer, has explained that his prompt concession following last year’s election defeat was motivated by a desire to spare Ghana needless political strife.

He made the remarks while addressing supporters in the Oti Region as part of the party’s ongoing Thank You Tour.

Speaking on Friday, May 9, Dr Bawumia recalled the tense aftermath of the December polls and the legal challenges that followed.

“I chose to concede early. It was a difficult decision, but my foremost concern was to save Ghana from unnecessary tension,” he stated, underscoring the importance of national unity over personal ambition.

The former flagbearer went on to express confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“By accepting the outcome swiftly, we upheld the rule of law and prevented further polarisation,” he observed.

Dr Bawumia also used the occasion to commend party faithful for their unwavering support.

“I deeply appreciate the sacrifices you made during the campaign. Your dedication—from door-to-door canvassing to fundraising—has not gone unnoticed. This tour is my chance to say thank you and to reaffirm our shared commitment to Ghana’s progress,” he said.

EC withholds conduct of Unit Committee Elections in six Electoral Areas

0

Electoral Commission logo Electoral Commission logo

The Electoral Commission (EC) has withheld the conduct of the Unit Committee Elections in six out of the 29 Electoral Areas (EAs) in the upcoming District Level Elections (DLEs) in the Nkoranza South Municipality of the Bono East Region.

This means the EC will hold the Unit Committee Elections in only 23 EAs in the municipality, Anthony Manu, the Nkoranza South Returning Officer of the EC, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview on Friday.

According to him, the six affected EAs, comprising 41 polling stations, were unable to present the minimum of more than five candidates required for the conduct of the elections.

Nonetheless, Manu said the DLEs would be conducted in all 29 EAs, comprising 162 polling stations. He explained that the nation’s electoral management body was adequately training and preparing the electoral and verification officers for the elections in the municipality.

He added that the municipal office of the EC was set to mount campaign platforms for the various candidates to engage their respective constituents.

The EC also announced plans to mount campaign platforms for candidates contesting in the upcoming DLEs and by-elections in the Nkoranza North District and Nkoranza South Municipality of the region.

In a statement issued by the EC and signed by its Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, it was explained that the elections are scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

A copy of the statement made available to the GNA indicated that the platform mounting exercise will take place from Friday, May 9, to Sunday, May 11, 2025.

According to the EC, at least one platform will be set up in every electoral area and unit where elections are being held. The initiative is intended to provide a fair and open space for candidates to present their manifestos, engage the electorate, and respond to questions from community members.

“The platform mounting will enable the electorate to assess the suitability of each candidate,” the statement said, and cautioned candidates and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully.

Tax analysts advise gov’t to repurpose COVID-19 levy to fund ‘Mahama Cares’

0

The African Centre for Tax Policy Research (ACTPR) is urging the government to reconsider its plan to abolish the 1% COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy.

Instead, the Centre proposes that the levy be repurposed to fund the newly proposed Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as “Mahama Cares.”

Currently, the centre noted that plans to fund the Trust rely on portions of the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), government allocations, voluntary donations, and donor support. However, the ACTPR has raised concerns about the sustainability and reliability of these sources, noting t

hat voluntary contributions are often unpredictable and politically vulnerable. The Centre pointed out that the COVID-19 levy alone generated over GHS 3 billion in 2024, demonstrating its potential as a consistent revenue stream.

The ACTPR further argued that by restructuring the levy including making input Value Added Tax (VAT) deductible for businesses and ring-fencing the funds exclusively for critical healthcare, the government can establish a sustainable financing mechanism for life-saving treatments while easing the burden on businesses.

In an interview with Citi Business News, tax consultant with the Centre, Francis Timore Boi, stated:
“These are voluntary contributions, and they are unpredictable and politically vulnerable. They are unlikely to meet the recurring, high-cost nature of dialysis and other chronic diseases.”

He continued: “Although the government plans to abolish the 1% COVID-19 levy, we believe it can be reformed and redirected towards the Trust Fund. In 2024 alone, the levy raised about GHS 3 billion. Given the serious and ongoing financial needs associated with chronic illnesses, it would be ideal to secure a reliable and permanent source of funding.”

Timore Boi stressed that transparency in the management of the funds would be crucial in winning public support: “We believe Ghanaians will back this initiative, especially if there is clear accountability on how the money is used to assist people living with chronic conditions.”

The Mahama Cares initiative aims to provide financial support for the treatment of chronic and high-cost illnesses such as kidney failure, cancer, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases, ensuring that no Ghanaian is denied critical healthcare due to financial constraints.

S&P upgrades Ghana’s credit rating to CCC+; outlook stable

0

S&P Global Ratings has upgraded Ghana’s credit rating to CCC+ from ‘SD’ or Selective Default, as a result of the nearing completion of the country’s debt restructuring negotiations with its commercial creditors

The upgraded rating better reflects S&P’s forward-looking opinion of Ghana’s creditworthiness.

The US-based firm in a statement said the outlook on both the foreign and local currency ratings is stable.

Similarly, Ghana’s transferability and convertibility assessment remains ’CCC+.

It explained that the stable outlook balances supportive economic growth, ongoing fiscal reforms, and Ghana’s improved external position against high debt service costs and a weak (although improving) track record of public financial management through election cycles.

“The upgrade reflects recent steps taken by authorities to restructure remaining commercial debt, following a successful Eurobond exchange in October 2024. The government is nearing completion of its offers to restructure loans to external creditors, primarily commercial banks. This progress follows the successful completion of local currency and Eurobond restructurings, and a memorandum of understanding with bilateral creditors signed and ratified on January 29, 2025”, it added.

It continued that the ratings on Ghana are supported by improving external metrics, with significant increases in gold export receipts and a reaccumulation of foreign exchange (FX) reserves.

In addition, economic growth remains resilient despite the protracted debt restructuring process. External debt makes up 62% of government liabilities, or 49% of Gross Domestic Product, implying that debt sustainability will remain contingent on exchange rate developments, and therefore key export prices.

It however warned that Ghana continues to struggle with a high debt service burden, weak tax administration, and spending overruns, especially during election years.

It noted that inflation, which is currently at 21.2%, remains high but is falling due to cedi appreciation and lower energy prices. The shift of the country’s current account into surplus has resulted in increased external liquidity.

If you grab the top without the process, you will fall — MzGee

Ghanaian broadcaster and media entrepreneur MzGee Ghanaian broadcaster and media entrepreneur MzGee

“If you grab the top without the process, you will fall.” That was the hard-hitting message from Ghanaian broadcaster and media entrepreneur MzGee in the latest episode of her show, Gee O’clock, where she stripped away the glamour of success to highlight the often-ignored truth: process is everything.

In a no-holds-barred reflection, MzGee warned against the modern obsession with results while neglecting the discipline, sacrifice, and time it takes to get there. Her episode, titled Process Matters, is a timely wake-up call for young people chasing fame, influence, or leadership positions without enduring the grit that builds staying power.

“The process of becoming anything—overcoming, championing, or winning—matters more than the end result,” she said. “If you don’t go through the process, you’re merely going through the motions.”

Drawing from her own journey, MzGee recounted the grueling early days of her media career—working five days a week, hosting a Saturday show, sleeping in her car because she lived far from the studio, and juggling both radio and TV without rest. She described those days not as a badge of suffering but as the foundation that shaped her into a resilient and unbreakable force in the industry.

“The process drained me, but it also built me. Today, if you ask me to work a 24-hour production without sleep, I’m ready—I’ve done it before.”

To illustrate that lasting growth is often invisible and slow, she referenced the rise of NSPPD, now the world’s largest online prayer platform, which began during the pandemic with just 13 viewers. She also cited gospel artist Mercy Chinwo, who waited five years after winning Nigerian Idol before releasing a breakout hit.

“Even if you start with just 20, 30, or 100 people, don’t complain. Growth takes time,” she emphasized, echoing a lyric from rapper King Paluta: “Sometimes, just give time some time.”

MzGee’s message is a stark contrast to the fast-tracked, results-driven culture many have come to idolize. Her argument is simple but profound: without the process, you may reach the top—but you won’t last there.

Now leading her own production brand, Jazz Venus, she remains rooted in the values forged in her toughest days.

“I’ve been a producer, presenter, and creator. You cannot break me—I have a resilient spirit.”

She also admitted to past regrets, including giving up on YouTube because it felt too hard at the time. Today, she’s back on the platform, inspired by those who stayed the course. Her lesson: persistence pays, and quitting too soon is self-sabotage.

MzGee closed the episode with a clear call to action:

“The beginning may seem small, but the end matters—and the process determines that end.”

Mohammed Kudus promises West Ham fans better campaign next season

0

Mohammed Kudus, Footballer Mohammed Kudus, Footballer

Mohammed Kudus has pledged to help West Ham United bounce back and fight for European places next season after a torrid 2024/25 campaign.

The Hammers, who reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League last season, have struggled this term and currently sit just one place above the relegation zone.

Kudus has endured an underwhelming season himself, scoring only four goals in the Premier League—half of his tally from the previous campaign.

However, the 24-year-old believes that the setback will serve as motivation for him and his teammates to achieve more in the 2025/26 season.

“100%, that should be the focus and that should be the standard every season,” he said when asked if the team will come back stronger next season.

“Like I said, we take a lot of lessons from these down times. Every setback, for me personally, I see as an opportunity to grow and focus on what lies ahead,” he added in an interview with Sky Sports.

The former Ajax forward’s future at West Ham remains uncertain, with several clubs reportedly interested in securing his services.

Kudus and his teammates will travel to Old Trafford on Sunday to face Europa League finalists Manchester United.

Student faces deportation after running red light — police discover her entire family has been living illegally in US

A Georgia college student faces deportation after she ran a red light, and authorities discovered her entire family has been illegally living in the US for nearly 15 years.

Mexican-national Ximena Arias-Cristobal, 19, was pulled over by police in Dalton, Ga. on May 5 when she failed to adhere to a “no turn on red” sign.

She was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, a partner of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s 287(G) program, used to identify illegal aliens in the country.

“This program operates based on a series of reviews and background checks completed only after an inmate is already arrested for an Offense under Georgia Law,” the jail’s operation guide said.

Arias-Cristobal was processed through the federal database, which confirmed she wasn’t a US citizen.

She was brought to ICE’s Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Ga., where her father, Jose Francisco Arias-Tovar, is also being held.

Arias-Tovar was arrested last month when he was pulled over for driving 19 miles over the speed limit, the outlet reported.

Arias-Cristobal was not eligible for the DACA program, having been brought into the country a year after the program ended, according to Hannah Jones, the woman the teen babysat for in the past.

Jones created a GoFundMe to raise money for an immigration attorney and bond for the teen.

Chattanooga, Tennessee-based immigration attorney Terry Olsen called out the family’s detention.

“We do see that ICE is really trying to find any and all methods to say that an international has some way violated the process and their status. What’s concerning is that when they are being checked at these checkpoints or at the stops, ICE does not have their entire immigration file in front of them, they’re not looking at all of it, and they’re just relying on one item. This is a civil rights issue,” Olsen told the outlet.

Olsen said Arias-Cristobal’s mother will be arrested and deported within a month and her daughters will be taken with her to keep the family together.

‘Is he normal?’ – Prophet Uche sparks outrage on social media after declaring new Pope will die in 4 years

0

Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche and Robert Prevost, known as Pope Leo XIV Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche and Robert Prevost, known as Pope Leo XIV

Ghanaian Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche, the founder of Reign House Chapel International, has stirred outrage on social media following his controversial prophecy that the newly elected Pope, Robert Prevost, known as Pope Leo XIV, will not live beyond four years.

According to the prophet, the papal position following the death of Pope Francis was originally destined for a black man. However, he claimed that the election was manipulated in favour of Robert Prevost.

Weeks before the conclave, Prophet Uche had made similar statements. Following the election of Pope Leo XIV, he reiterated his stance during a sermon to his congregation.

“Let me say this today, I was there this afternoon around 5, and Long John sent me a video, he told me, ‘Papa, what you said has come to pass, they have chosen a white pope,’ and he showed me the video.”

He continued, “Listen, when did I say this? A week ago. I said a black man would be the pope, but they wouldn’t give it to him. And the one they give it to will live only three to four years. If I’m truly a man of God, write it down. If the new pope lives beyond four years at the Vatican, then I am not Prophet Uche.”

His comments have since triggered a wave of criticism online, with many questioning the legitimacy and relevance of such predictions.

One user wrote, “Is he normal? Ghana dey enjoy concert too much.”

Another added, “Small juju you’re doing and you think you’re more powerful than the Roman Catholic Church?”

One commenter bluntly stated, “I don’t operate in the realm, but this is nonsense.”

Others questioned the negativity often associated with such prophecies, Why is it always doom and death? Don’t they ever see anything positive?”

“Why is it always Africa where these things happen?”

Some even called for regulation, “Can they pass a law that if a prophecy doesn’t come true, the prophet goes to jail? I think that would help.”

Another added, “There’s something wrong with this ecclesia community of pastors. No wonder I can’t remember the last time I went to church. Focus on your community, whether it’s going to be here for another 2,000 years.”

‘Dirty Blackmailer’; you must be impeached

Blakk Rasta [L] and A Plus Blakk Rasta [L] and A Plus

Popular radio presenter Abubakar Ahmed, popularly known as Blakk Rasta, has called for the impeachment of the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as A Plus, after the lawmaker publicly admitted to accepting money to halt a campaign advocating for the decentralization of waste management in Ghana.

The controversial musician-turned-politician revealed in a media interview that the founder of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Joseph Siaw Agyapong, compensated him financially to stop the campaign, which would have directly impacted the company’s operations.

A Plus disclosed that his campaign was launched in retaliation after Paul Adom-Otchere, host of Good Evening Ghana, allegedly defamed him on Metro TV—a media outlet also owned by Siaw Agyapong.

“So this man puts my photo on TV and says, ‘A Plus, you have taken GHC250,000…’ He said a lot. If you say you are NPP, and this money is being given to NPP parliamentarians, why aren’t you talking about that? I didn’t respond; I just let it go. But then, on Monday, I started the campaign ‘Waste Management Must Be Decentralised’ because Zoomlion owns Metro TV. If you use Metro TV to attack me, Paul, you don’t have anything of value for me to attack—except your wife,” A Plus stated during an appearance on Channel 1 TV’s Upside Down program.

“I launched the campaign to attack his boss, Zoomlion. I invested time in it. You see what’s happening with the Youth Employment issues? I had time, and I was going to deal with them. Zoomlion called me several times, but I wasn’t answering. Everyone in the country was calling, saying Zoomlion wanted to speak with me, but I ignored them. Paul, ask your boss what happened when he finally met me. I didn’t sue you for defamation. Have you noticed that I stopped the waste management campaign? That’s because his boss paid me to stop, in response to your misconduct on Metro TV,” he added.

According to A Plus, Siaw Agyapong paid him “good money” to stop writing about him on social media.

Commenting on the matter during his show on 3FM, Blakk Rasta strongly condemned A Plus’ conduct, labeling him a blackmailer unfit to serve as a Member of Parliament.

“I am truly disappointment. A Plus is a brother of mine, I don’t know how to handle this but I will handle it. This guy is nothing but a dirty blackmailer. So you are no longer fighting for the people, you are fighting your own battles blackmailing people. So the decentralization of the waste management thing he was talking about, he did not mean it. He was doing it to blackmail a certain guy who he knew would run to him and pay him money which he will selfishly put in his pocket and forget. You are blackmailing people so that you get a certain attention. This guy does not deserve to be an MP. Nobody deserve to be an MP when their penchant is blackmailing.

“Paul Adom-Otchere hurt you and you got angry. As a lawmaker, what should you do? You’re in Parliament to make laws, yet you chose to act unlawfully and pursue personal vengeance by targeting someone’s business. And now, you’re not even ashamed to admit that you took money. That’s bribery. He should be impeached immediately. I’m disappointed in A Plus. We cannot allow this. If an MP confesses that his campaign had nothing to do with the public good, but only his personal grievances, then maybe I need to write to the Speaker of Parliament to draw attention to this serious matter.”

Don’t praise Mahama for low-hanging fruit; at UPSA, he would be a struggling student – Lecturer

0

President John Dramani Mahama [L] and Ishaq Ibrahim President John Dramani Mahama [L] and Ishaq Ibrahim

A Lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Ishak Ibrahim, has stated that there is no need to praise President John Dramani Mahama for his accomplishments in his first 120 days in office, as most of them were “low-hanging fruits.”

President Mahama, delivering a national address on Wednesday, May 7, to give an account of his first 120 days in office, highlighted the progress made so far, describing it as evidence of a new governance approach rooted in transparency, accountability, efficiency, and urgency.

The President noted that his administration had fulfilled all initial commitments made within the 120-day period and urged citizens to rally around a common purpose to confront national challenges and build a more prosperous and united future.

“We laid out a social contract with you, the people of Ghana, with specific promises for this critical initial period. Tonight, I’m pleased to report that we have fulfilled these promises — from forming a lean government and establishing a robust code of conduct to taking decisive action to scrap burdensome taxes, initiating inquiries into past wrongdoings, launching major job creation programs, tackling illegal mining, reviving our environment, promoting our tourism and export sectors, streamlining scholarships, supporting vulnerable populations, and holding our security agencies accountable,” he stated.

However, speaking on Metro TV on Friday, May 9, 2025, Ishak Ibrahim, a scholar and politician with sympathies toward the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said that judging by evaluations from some individuals and institutions, President Mahama could be described as a struggling student.

“IMANI Ghana, for example, gave President Mahama 50%. Joy News gave him 52%, and others gave 48%. You call upon me as an academic to pass my judgment. President Mahama says 100% — that is the assessment of an ambitious student. But if you look at the objective assessments by others, like IMANI Ghana, this is a struggling student.

“A score of 50% is a struggling student. If he were a student at UPSA, one mark less and he would be a re-sit student. One mark less is a ‘D’ — and a ‘D’ means a re-sit. So, according to IMANI Ghana, he’s just barely passed. We can call him a struggling student.

“I said some of these promises were low-hanging fruits. You cannot score highly for simply resolving low-hanging fruits, such as appointing a cabinet within 14 days. Should we award high marks for that? Even with the abolition of the E-Levy and Betting Tax — again, these are low-hanging fruits. Abolishing is easy, but when it comes to the heavy lifting, the government has run away from it.”

‘Jesus, mothers actually go through a lot’ – MzGee reflects on pain of childbirth

0

Television host MzGee has shared a raw and emotional account of the pain and sacrifice women endure during childbirth, urging people to recognize and appreciate the immense strength that comes with motherhood.

Speaking on her lifestyle show Gee O’Clock, MzGee recounted her own experience—particularly the moment she saw the size of the epidural needle used during her labour. The sight of the needle, which she described as “epic,” brought everything into perspective.

“When I saw that needle the gentleman had pulled and said, ‘This is the epic epidural needle,’ I said, ‘Jesus Christ, I can’t believe that I had that needle go behind me—or that I had that needle in my back just a few months ago.’ No wonder they never show us that needle.”

She reflected on the awe-inspiring endurance of mothers, urging viewers to show greater appreciation for their own mothers, especially on the eve of Mother’s Day.

“If you haven’t called your mother in a long time… if you haven’t shown your mother enough love… this is one for you. When I saw that, I was like, Jesus, mothers—women—actually go through a lot,” she said, emphasizing the importance of respecting and cherishing mothers for all they go through.

MzGee’s journey into motherhood was not without its challenges. She spoke candidly about the discomforts of pregnancy, recalling how she struggled with basic tasks like applying lotion to her feet. She also shared her emotional experience of enduring heartburn and other pregnancy-related discomforts, including an aversion to foods she once loved.

“The process of pregnancy… it might even exceed nine months, going to 10 months… Have you thought about the fact that that journey to giving birth is a journey of life and death?” MzGee asked, acknowledging the risks many women face during pregnancy and childbirth. “Not everybody is able to complete that nine-month journey. Not everybody is able to return home with their baby.”

Her experience with childbirth was equally harrowing. MzGee recalled the moment she received the epidural, nervously preparing for the procedure as a first-time mother. Despite the fear, she chose to take the epidural, which numbed her from the waist down during delivery. She described the overwhelming relief she felt when her baby was finally born.

However, the joy of holding her newborn was short-lived. Just days after delivery, a doctor informed her that her haemoglobin levels had dropped dangerously low—to 5—prompting an emergency blood transfusion.

“Psychologically, my mind began to go off the roof. What is happening? What is happening? By the end of that day, my blood pressure had shot through the roof,” she explained. “That is what we go through to birth a child.”

MzGee announced the arrival of her baby in January 2025.

The high-level meeting, held at the Minerals Commission headquarters, forms part of broader efforts to tackle illegal mining and the environmental degradation associated with the unregulated use of heavy-duty equipment.

This engagement follows the formation of a ministerial task force by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, mandated to develop a framework for the registration, tracking, and monitoring of excavators nationwide.

During the discussions, the two institutions identified significant gaps in excavator registration. While the Minerals Commission has systems for tracking equipment used by concession holders, many excavators—whether owned by individuals, dealers, or small-scale miners—remain unregistered with the DVLA, despite the Authority being the only body legally mandated to register all vehicles and heavy machinery in the country.

Mr. Kotey emphasized the need to integrate the DVLA’s role into excavator regulation, noting that unregistered equipment poses a major challenge to monitoring and enforcement.

He assured the Commission of the DVLA’s readiness to deploy mobile service teams to mining areas to register all operational excavators, thereby enabling better oversight and control.

In a key policy shift, the DVLA and the Minerals Commission also agreed that, going forward, all excavators imported into the country will be registered at the port of entry before being dispatched to their destinations. This move aims to prevent unregistered excavators from bypassing regulatory processes and proceeding directly to mining sites.

The DVLA boss reiterated the Authority’s commitment to supporting national efforts to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable mining practices.

He emphasized that strong inter-agency collaboration is vital to addressing the challenges posed by illegal mining and equipment misuse.

The meeting was facilitated by Dr. Sylvester Akpah, a Computer Science Engineer from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), and was attended by members of the DVLA management team and technical staff from the Minerals Commission.

Rejecting the President’s MMDCE nominations threatens development- Linda Ocloo

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has expressed worry over the growing trend of rejecting Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) nominees, warning that such actions threaten socio-economic development in local communities.

Speaking at a recent press briefing following the rejection of Kenneth Kabu Kanor, the President’s nominee for the position of District Chief Executive position in Ada East Assembly, she stressed that proactive engagement and consensus-building are essential in ensuring smooth confirmations, which in turn enable effective administration and local development.

“If you delay the confirmation, you delay development, you delay progress, sometimes recruitment processes are stalled because the DCE is yet to be confirmed. If the position is vacant, those lobbying for jobs might bypass the due channels and resort to informal means, creating room for bias and inefficiency”,she lamented.

She urged assembly members not to allow personal grievances or political aspirations to cloud their judgment.

“If someone has offended you, find a way to resolve it. Don’t work against the nominee simply because you think it will get you appointed instead. That mindset will only hurt the community”, she noted.

She also hinted at possible changes in the way government appointees are considered.

“If we notice that government appointees are not contributing meaningfully or are part of the obstruction, we’ll start looking outside the box,” she warned, adding that the sole business of appointees at this stage should be to support the confirmation of the President’s nominee Let’s not let politics get in the way of development”, she added.

US donates $6m worth of armoured vehicles to GAF to boost national, regional security

The United States Government has donated 14 mine-resistant, ambush-protected armored personnel carriers (APCs), valued at over $6 million, to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The official handover, which took place on Wednesday at Burma Camp in Accra, symbolized the deepening of the U.S.-Ghana security partnership and demonstrated the bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries.

The Puma M36 vehicles, designed for enhanced troop protection and mobility, are expected to significantly strengthen the operational readiness of the GAF, particularly in counter-terrorism and border security operations.

The APCs are intended to boost the country’s capacity to respond to emerging threats and safeguard its territorial integrity.

More than 40 Ghanaian soldiers have undergone comprehensive training in operating and maintaining the APCs over the past four weeks.

Madam Virginia Palmer, U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, who led the American delegation at the brief ceremony, said the gesture was more than a transfer of military equipment, it symbolized values, cooperation, and the deeply held mutual respect that defines the decades-long relationship between the U.S. and Ghana.

Ambassador Palmer noted the important role Ghana plays in regional security, particularly along its northern border, and expressed optimism that the vehicles would enhance the country’s security efforts.

She added that Ghana’s contributions to peacekeeping missions and multinational military exercises, such as Flintlock and African Lion, underscore its position as a reliable partner in advancing global peace and stability.

“These APCs support the GAF’s mission of ensuring peace and border integrity, which makes both Ghana and the United States safer,” she remarked, adding that, “They are part of a broader commitment that includes continued training and joint operations.”

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana’s Minister of Defence, expressed profound appreciation to the U.S. government for the donation, describing it as both generous and strategic.

He stated, “This occasion is not just a symbol of the enduring partnership between our two countries; it is a tangible expression of our shared commitment to peace, stability, and security within Ghana and across the West African sub-region.”

The Minister also praised the professionalism of the Ghana Armed Forces, urging them to carry out their duties with renewed confidence and a heightened sense of responsibility.

Over the years, the U.S. government has provided various forms of logistical and operational support to the GAF, including boats, mobile field hospitals, and infrastructure to enhance Ghana’s defense capacity.

The event was attended by senior Ghanaian military officials, representatives of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), and members of the diplomatic community.

The donation coincided with Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), which marks the end of World War II in Europe, a symbolic alignment underscoring the U.S.’s continued commitment to global peace and security.

Musician Kingdom Rascal launches foundation to support vulnerable families

Her Royal Highness Pobat Yenuloom Tintangobir aka Kingdom Rascal Her Royal Highness Pobat Yenuloom Tintangobir aka Kingdom Rascal

In a powerful and emotionally charged ceremony, Her Royal Highness Pobat Yenuloom Tintangobir I–known widely by her stage name Kingdom Rascal, officially launched the My Basic Needs Charity Foundation, a humanitarian initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable children and families across Ghana and the African diaspora.

Held with cultural fanfare and attended by dignitaries, traditional leaders, family, friends, and supporters from across continents, the inauguration marked not only the birth of a philanthropic foundation but a renewed call to action to address the socioeconomic challenges confronting rural and underserved communities.

In her moving inaugural speech, the newly crowned Paramount Queen Mother of the Bimobas, Mobas, and Gurmas in the Diaspora shared her deeply personal journey–one rooted in both royal heritage and real hardship.

Born in Nakpanduri in the Northeast Region of Ghana, Kingdom Rascal recounted a childhood marked by hunger, poverty, and perseverance.

“I know what it means to wake up hungry, to walk long distances barefoot just to receive an education,” she said, evoking a powerful connection with many in the audience.

Her rise–from a top student to a member of the Ghana Police Force, and eventually to a UK-based entrepreneur, nurse, evangelist, and Afro-conscious artist–is a testimony to resilience.

Despite her global travels and accomplishments, Kingdom Rascal declared that her heart has never left her people. Since 2010, she has worked quietly to feed, clothe, and empower children in need–efforts that now take a formal shape through My Basic Needs.

“The title of Queen Mother is not for personal glory,” she declared. “It is a commitment to serve, uplift, and empower my people. The challenges we face, poverty, division, lack of education, health disparities, and the loss of cultural identity–must not define us.”

The My Basic Needs Charity Foundation seeks to address these exact issues, starting with providing food, clothing, school supplies, and emotional support to children from underserved backgrounds.

With a strong emphasis on education, healthcare, and cultural preservation, the foundation will also empower women and youth–groups Kingdom Rascal passionately uplifted in her speech.

She also called for unity across borders and communities: “Whether you are Ghanaian, Nigerian, African, or European, stand with me. Let us invest in education, support our youth, preserve our traditions, and lift up those in need.”

A highlight of the launch was the tribute to Kingdom Rascal’s recent single titled ‘Mummy’ a heartfelt song dedicated to mothers and mother figures across the world.

The emotionally rich lyrics reflect her gratitude and admiration for the strength, sacrifices, and wisdom of women who raise families under challenging circumstances.

The song underscores the very mission of the foundation, celebrating the resilience of women while advocating for the support systems they often lack. “Mummy is not just a song, it’s a prayer, a tribute, and a promise,” she said. “It reminds us why our work matters.”

True to her name, Kingdom Rascal is not one to shy away from challenging the status quo. She explained the inspiration behind her stage name: “Rascal” represents her fearless commitment to truth.

Influenced by figures such as Jesus Christ, the prophet Elijah, and reggae icon Bob Marley, she uses music as a bold tool to expose injustice and inspire societal change.

“Throughout history, those who spoke truth were seen as troublemakers,” she explained. “But I believe that being a rascal for the Kingdom of God means having the courage to speak out and spark transformation.”

Now stepping fully into her dual role as cultural leader and activist artist, Kingdom Rascal’s message is clear: this is only the beginning. With My Basic Needs, she is building a movement rooted in love, faith, action, and legacy.

“This is our time,” she concluded. “This is our movement. This is our legacy.”

Where’s the $350m and $150m worth of cocaine Mahama described as high-profile busts?

0

Assin South MP, Reverend Ntim Fordjour Assin South MP, Reverend Ntim Fordjour

The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Interior and Defence Committee, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has questioned the whereabouts of the cocaine President Mahama once described as part of a high-profile bust worth $350 million, seized in Takoradi—long before the recent cases currently in court.

On April 1, 2025, President Mahama ordered investigations into allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering linked to two suspicious flights that reportedly landed at Kotoka International Airport.

The directive followed a press conference by Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, who raised concerns about the flights’ purpose and cargo.

In a Facebook post, President Mahama said he had directed the investigative agencies to collaborate with the MP and obtain relevant information from him to investigate the allegations swiftly.

“Government takes all allegations seriously,” President Mahama noted, adding, “To ensure a thorough and transparent investigation, I have directed all relevant investigative agencies to immediately and fully collaborate with the Honourable Member of Parliament so he can provide all necessary information to investigate the allegations and take all action necessary to expose any drug dealing.”

The President reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking, stating that Ghana must not be used as a transit or final destination for illegal drugs.

This directive comes on the heels of a recent high-profile drug bust by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), which seized drugs with an estimated street value of $350 million. This, the President said, reflects the government’s commitment to combat drug trafficking.

However, speaking on Asempa FM on Friday, May 9, 2025, Rev. Ntim Fordjour stated that so far, only the prosecution of the 82kg cocaine bust at the Swiss port is underway.

“So far, we have seen them arraign the culprits, and the court has granted them bail. But the question begging for an answer is: what about the one the President described as a high-profile bust? I mean the $350 million and $150 million busts in Takoradi, in which it was claimed the person behind the consignment was a former NDC parliamentary candidate? How come it is only the recent 89kg cocaine bust that is being prosecuted, but nobody has been arraigned for the $350 million and $150 million busts from long ago?”

Reverend Ntim Fordjour disclosed his intention to use legal processes to push for answers on the whereabouts of the large cocaine consignments.

“My lawyers—Atta Akyea, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, and Jeff Koranteng—are taking serious action regarding the $350 million and $150 million cocaine busts. I have spoken with my lawyers, and on this specific issue, Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah is filing a Right To Information (RTI) request to determine the whereabouts of the cocaine—a total worth of half a billion dollars. The government has initiated prosecution only in the small bust (89kg) but has remained silent on the high-profile cases. Who are the persons behind them? Where is the cocaine? The government is very quiet about this. We are filing an RTI on the issue.”

Using black smoke to signify failure not good for us

0

Veteran Nollywood actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo Veteran Nollywood actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo

Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has sparked reactions on social media after he expressed concerns over the Catholic Church’s traditional use of black smoke to signify an unsuccessful papal election.

In a video shared on Instagram, Kanayo questioned the symbolism behind the smoke signals used during the papal conclave, where black smoke represents failure to elect a pope, and white smoke signals success.

He argued that consistently associating “black” with failure reinforces subconscious racial bias.

“When they fail, it’s black smoke. When they succeed, it’s white smoke… This has been ingrained in the minds of the world that black is failure,” he said.

Kanayo suggested that the Church should consider alternative symbolism, proposing, for example, that blue smoke could be used to indicate that no pope has been elected, while white smoke continues to announce success. “Remove the black. It’s not good for us,” he added.

His remarks have sparked wide debate online, with some supporting the call to rethink the use of long-held symbols that could unintentionally perpetuate negative associations with the color black.

Others, however, point to the fact that black is also used within the Church in a different context, notably in clergy regalia, where it symbolizes humility, solemnity, and devotion.

Meanwhile, on May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. This historic event marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy.

Pope Leo XIV was elected after four rounds of voting during the conclave that followed Pope Francis’s death on April 21, 2025. His election is seen as a continuation of Pope Francis’s progressive agenda, emphasizing social justice, immigration reform, and outreach to marginalized communities. In his first mass, he warned against prioritizing technology, wealth, and pleasure over faith.

Pope Leo XIV’s election breaks a longstanding tradition, as the Vatican had previously avoided appointing American popes due to geopolitical concerns.

His dual citizenship and extensive work in Latin America helped bridge this gap. He is the first pope from the Augustinian Order and the first from an English-speaking country since the 12th century.

His papal name honors Pope Leo XIII, known for advocating workers’ rights and social justice, signaling a commitment to similar values.

Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration mass is scheduled for May 18, 2025. His leadership is anticipated to focus on unity within the Church and addressing global challenges with compassion and humility.
