Rev. Stephen Wengam

The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Wengam says Ghanaian pastors abroad should shun mediocrity but reflect excellence on all fronts in order to project the image of Ghana and Africa greatly.

Rev. Wengam was speaking at a meeting in London with Ghanaian Assemblies of God pastors who are serving as missionaries in the UK.

The purpose of the meeting was to encourage the pastors and brief them on developments in Assemblies of God, Ghana as well as share the vision of the church leadership. In attendance were close to 50 pastors.

Rev. Wengam also updated the pastors on preparations towards the Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship scheduled in Accra from October 12 to 14, 2026. The Congress will be the first by the global body in Africa.

Rev. Wengam underlined the need for unity among the pastors. This will enable their members to reflect same.

He further called on the church to prioritise prayer, adding that “communion with God is the native air of the Christian.”

‘I’m disgusted by how Ofori-Atta has been treated unfairly’ – Gabby

L-R: Ken Ofori-Atta and Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko L-R: Ken Ofori-Atta and Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Chairman of Asaase Broadcasting, has expressed strong disapproval of the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s handling of former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to him, he is appalled by the treatment of the former minister, especially given his current health conditions.

Speaking in an interview on Asaase Radio on Monday, June 16, 2025, Otchere-Darko said, “I’m disgusted about how Ken Ofori-Atta has been treated. I’m disgusted. He’s doing well and I think he’s on an intensive recovery for the next couple of weeks at least. It [medical treatment] went well and we thank God for that.”

Sharing his personal experience with Ofori-Atta, Gabby eulogised him, stating that the former minister, who is currently being pursued by the OSP, an anti-corruption agency, entered politics to selflessly serve in the nation’s interest rather than for personal gain.

He supported his claim by referencing the country’s economic growth and progress during Ofori-Atta’s first four years as Minister of Finance under the previous government.

He also criticised the citizenry, accusing them of unfairly blaming Ofori-Atta for the country’s economic woes.

He argued that the economic challenges were not the former appointee’s fault, emphasising his achievements during his first four years in office.

“The Ken Ofori-Atta that I know came to politics not for personal gain. He came to politics because he believed he could serve. And we saw what happened in the first four years that he was finance minister.

“We saw what happened, especially after 2021. When I hear the conversation about what the country went through, I think we’ve been unfair to him. And I will say this for a fact because, yes, for the first four years we saw the work that he did,” he added.

The OSP has declared the former minister a wanted fugitive after he failed to comply with a directive to appear before the agency.

CLOGSAG orders staff to strike over alleged misconduct by Births and Deaths Registrar

0

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), has directed all staff of the Births and Deaths Registry nationwide to stay at home starting Tuesday, June 17, 2025, citing an increasingly hostile work environment under the Acting Registrar, Mr. Samuel Adom Botchway.

In a letter dated June 12, 2025, addressed to the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, and copied to key government offices including the Office of the Head of Civil Service (OHCS) and the Office of the Head of Local Government Service (OHLGS), CLOGSAG alleged continued misconduct by Mr. Botchway despite earlier petitions and negotiations aimed at resolving the leadership crisis at the Registry.

According to CLOGSAG, Mr. Botchway has been “acting irresponsibly” by unilaterally posting and reassigning staff across the Civil and Local Government Services without proper authority.

The letter also accuses him of verbally assaulting staff and creating what the Association describes as an “uncongenial atmosphere” at the workplace through constant threats.

“These actions have rendered the working environment unsafe and intolerable,” the Association said in the statement signed by Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo.

The move follows a previous nationwide strike in March 2025 over the same leadership concerns. That strike was suspended after the Ministry of Labour intervened and assured continued dialogue to resolve the matter. However, CLOGSAG says there has been little progress since then.

At an emergency meeting held on June 12, 2025, the Association’s National Executive Council (NEC) resolved that all staff under the Registry should remain at home until a “safe and congenial working environment” is assured.

The strike action is likely to disrupt key public services such as the issuance of birth and death certificates across the country.

“External Factors Can’t Be Excuses” — Ghanaians Slam Mahama Over Israel-Iran Conflict Comment

0

Some Ghanaians have taken to social media platform X to challenge President John Dramani Mahama’s recent comments on the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict and the potential impact on Ghana’s fuel prices as reported by Ghana Web.

During his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Savannah Region on June 14, 2025, President Mahama raised concerns about the ripple effects of the escalating tensions in the Middle East.

He explained that rising crude oil prices, triggered by the exchange of missile strikes between Iran and Israel, could undermine Ghana’s progress in stabilising petroleum product prices.

“Despite the work we have done in stabilising the economy, Ghana is not immune to the shocks of global events,” he remarked.

To address the looming threat, Mahama disclosed that he had tasked the Finance and Energy Ministers to monitor the situation closely and devise strategies to protect the recent gains achieved in fuel price reductions.

However, his remarks sparked mixed reactions among Ghanaians online.

Critics argued that Mahama’s current stance appears contradictory, pointing out that while in opposition, he criticised the Akufo-Addo government for blaming external factors, such as the Russia-Ukraine war, for Ghana’s economic woes.

They questioned why he now acknowledges global events as influencing domestic fuel prices.

Conversely, some supporters defended Mahama, asserting that his statements were not an attempt to shift blame but rather a realistic acknowledgment of potential external pressures on Ghana’s economy.

They argued that his call for proactive measures demonstrated responsible leadership in anticipating global market fluctuations.

Stop the political interference; EC must complete its work in Ablekuma North

0

Jones de Graft-Darkwa is a Research & Elections Officer at Ablekuma North Constituency Jones de Graft-Darkwa is a Research & Elections Officer at Ablekuma North Constituency

In recent days, Ghanaians have witnessed a troubling and unjustified attack on the independence of the Electoral Commission (EC), led by senior government officials, including the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Presidential Advisor for Governmental Affairs, Dr. Valerie Esther Sawyer. These officials have publicly called for a rerun of the parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

Let me state emphatically that any talk of a rerun in Ablekuma North, whether for the entire constituency or select polling stations, is completely without justification or constitutional basis.

The EC is the only institution empowered by our Constitution to organize and supervise elections in Ghana. It is an independent body. The recent comments from these high-ranking officials not only undermine that independence but also risk setting a dangerous precedent in which political pressure overrides the law and due process.

The EC has consistently stated that it is ready and willing to execute its constitutional mandate by completing the collation and declaration of the 7 December 2024 parliamentary election results for Ablekuma North. The only impediment has been the lack of adequate security support from the Ghana Police Service. It is, therefore, deeply troubling for anyone, especially government officials, to be calling for a rerun when the lawful process has not been concluded simply due to an apparent failure, or refusal, to guarantee the Commission the security it needs to operate.

Ironically, any rerun (should one occur), would require even greater security arrangements. So why are these calls being made at all? The solution is clear: provide the EC with the protection it needs to do its job and respect the will of the people.

The constituents of Ablekuma North have exercised their constitutional right to vote. The ballots have been cast, and the democratic process must be allowed to conclude. It is not for politicians, regardless of their office, to decide whether an election should be rerun. That authority lies solely with the EC, and only under specific, well-grounded legal circumstances.

Rather than undermine the process with partisan pronouncements, officials like Dr. Omane Boamah and Dr. Valerie Sawyer should be using their influence to support the EC and urge the Inspector General of Police and the Ghana Police Service to ensure the Commission has the protection it needs to carry out its constitutional duties.

This moment calls for leadership, not political gamesmanship. The EC must be allowed to assert its independence, complete the collation process, and declare the results without further delay. Anything less is a betrayal of our democracy.

It is time to end the charade and put Ghana first.

Global conflict poses risk to Ghana’s economy

Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has warned that Ghana’s economy could face significant challenges if the conflict between Israel and Iran escalates.

He stated that the country’s heavy reliance on imported petroleum products makes it particularly vulnerable to external shocks, potentially triggering fuel price hikes and broader inflationary pressures.

Speaking on Channel One TV on June 16, 2025, Adomako-Mensah highlighted the potential economic implications of the Israel-Iran conflict on Ghana, emphasising the risks tied to the country’s energy dependency.

He noted that the conflict had already begun to disrupt international travel.

“Just yesterday, because of this, there were major disruptions to international travel. These are two oil-producing countries, and the conflict is definitely going to impact global oil prices,” he said.

Adomako-Mensah cautioned that prolonged hostilities between Israel and Iran would place increasing strain on Ghana’s economy, and he advocated for urgent diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.

Veteran Ghanaian musician Agya Koo Nimo has expressed his desire to meet President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, the legendary highlife musician showed appreciation to Mahama for acknowledging him during the launch of the Black Star Experience on May 1, 2025.

At the event, the President instructed the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, to organise a ceremony to honour Agya Koo Nimo.

Reacting to this gesture, the musician said he is grateful that the President mentioned his name and recognised his contributions to music.

“Let the president know that we are very much appreciative of what he said and especially mentioning Koo Nimo,” he said.

Agya Koo Nimo also noted that although he has never met Mahama in person, he hopes to one day get the chance to do so.

“I haven’t met him before, it’s challenging to meet great people. One day, he should pass by my side and if he does, the whole world would shake,” he stated.

He added that he would be glad to shake the President’s hand and have a conversation with him. He also mentioned that he has met the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, in the past.

Residents stranded due to incomplete drainage system in Ablekuma Fanmilk

0

Residents of Ablekuma Fanmilk are voicing frustration over an incomplete drainage system Residents of Ablekuma Fanmilk are voicing frustration over an incomplete drainage system

Residents of Ablekuma Fanmilk are voicing frustration over an incomplete drainage system that has left them cut off and inconvenienced.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com dated June 16, 2025, the issue affects the 10 Plots area in Ablekuma Fanmilk, part of the Ga Central Municipal Assembly.

A drainage system constructed along a key community road is obstructing access to residents’ homes.

Residents say this problem has persisted for nearly a decade, despite numerous complaints from affected households.

Originally intended to address flooding, the project has been ongoing for several months.

However, its incomplete state has brought significant hardship to the community. Instead of improving infrastructure, it has become a major source of disruption.

The drainage system, left unfinished, continues to worsen flooding in the area. A deep, open gutter now cuts across the road, separating homes from the main access route.

They lament that the situation deteriorates further during the rainy season, when the inadequate drainage fails to manage water runoff.

Additionally, residents say they are often forced to wade through flooded streets, as vehicles, including cars and motorbikes, are unable to reach the area. Many are compelled to walk long distances or risk dangerous crossings just to access their homes.

The community is therefore urgently appealing to the authorities to complete the project.

“This area floods frequently during the rainy season, and we lose clients as a result. It’s very difficult to attract new customers under these conditions,” a resident lamented.

Parents in the community are also deeply concerned about the safety of schoolchildren.

“I want the road to be fixed. There are schools nearby, and when it rains, I often have to keep my children at home because the gutter becomes dangerous. If a child were to fall in, it could be disastrous. I stand watch during the rains just to keep them safe,” one worried resident shared.

Despite repeated appeals to local authorities, the issue remains unresolved.

“We’ve consulted the assemblyman and other officials, but they always say action will be taken. When it rains, erosion is severe, and if you’re not careful, you could be swept away,” another resident said.

Assemblyman Efritete Baffoe Kyei, who represents the Ablekuma Electoral Area, has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation.

“This has been a major challenge for us. Last year, I spoke with the Roads Engineer, Mr. Armah, who said the project had been earmarked for a contractor to build a proper drain. I followed up in March this year, and he told me that due to changes in government, we would have to be patient,” he explained.

He stressed the urgent need for proper drainage infrastructure and assured residents that discussions with the Municipal Engineer are ongoing.

New date for fuel levy will be announced when indicators are favorable

Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has noted that a new date for the implementation of the Dumsor Levy will be communicated once tensions between Israel and Iran subside.

According to the Spokesperson and Head of Communications for the ministry, Richmond Rockson, the ministry is monitoring developments on the global market to ensure that the gains made in the oil sector this year are not lost.

He explained, “In fact, over the past three days, if you check crude oil prices on the international market, they have risen from $60 to $74. This is the highest we’ve seen in the past five months. This increase has also caused some disruptions in our pricing model.

“The President has directed the Ministers of Energy and Finance to continue monitoring the situation. So they will keep monitoring it, and once the conditions become favourable, a new date will definitely be announced,” he added.

The ministry confirmed that the postponement of the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141), was influenced by escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, which have impacted global oil prices.

“I can confirm that the Government of Ghana, as announced by the GRA, has postponed the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141). This levy introduced GH¢1 on petrol, GH¢1 on diesel, and 20 pesewas on gas. So yes, I can give you that confirmation,” Rockson was quoted by Citi Newsroom.

He noted that the President is committed to safeguarding the gains made from falling oil prices this year and to shielding consumers from additional burdens.

Rockson further stated that since June 13, oil prices have surged on the global market due to rising geopolitical tensions, influencing the government’s decision to delay the levy’s implementation.

“From February to date, we have experienced a windfall in the fuel market, thanks to the prudent management of exchange rates, which has reduced fuel prices from an average of GH¢17 to GH¢11 or GH¢12, depending on which Oil Marketing Company (OMC) you buy from,” he said.

Olanrewaju Gabriel’s body set to arrive in Nigeria on June 17

Olanrewaju Gabriel Oluwasegun collapsed during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena Olanrewaju Gabriel Oluwasegun collapsed during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena

The remains of late Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju Gabriel Oluwasegun, popularly known as “Success,” will arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, nearly three months after his tragic death in Ghana.

The body is expected to arrive at approximately 4:00 PM WAT and will be transported directly to the Honda Playing Ground in Otta, Ogun State.

There, a series of ceremonies will be held in his honour, including a boxing demonstration by members of the Nigerian boxing community and a candlelight vigil that will continue through the night. He will be laid to rest the following day.

The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) confirmed the arrangements in a letter dated June 10, 2025, addressed to the President of the Ghana Boxing Authority.

Signed by NBBofC president Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, the letter stated that the repatriation had been finalised after talks involving the General Secretary Remi Aboderin and Ghanaian boxing officials.

“Based on your call and discussion with my good self Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, and the General Secretary Hon. Remi Aboderin, we have informed the above deceased boxer’s family and have agreed to receive his remains (corpse) on Tuesday, 17th of June 2025,” the letter read.

The NBBofC stated that the timing was intended to give the family enough room to prepare, and that the body would proceed directly to burial, with no need for additional mortuary services.

The board also requested that the remains be returned in a casket, rather than a body bag, and urged Ghanaian authorities to provide the boxer’s fight purse and compensation for the loss.

Olanrewaju collapsed during a light-heavyweight bout with Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu on March 29, 2025, during Fight Night 15 at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

He was later pronounced dead at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. His sudden death shocked the Nigerian boxing community and triggered widespread calls for a review of safety standards in Ghanaian boxing.

The repatriation process was delayed due to legal and diplomatic procedures, including the need for a coroner’s report.

“The Court Said the Judge Should Recuse Himself, But the Contempt Still Holds” — NDC Fires Back

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected claims by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the contempt case involving Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi has been fully resolved as reported by ModernGhana.

According to the NDC, the case is still active despite the recent Supreme Court ruling.

The Supreme Court overturned an earlier contempt conviction issued by High Court Judge Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe and ordered his recusal. However, the NDC maintains that the charges remain.

Eastern Regional Secretary of the NDC, Jamal Konneh, criticized the NPP for misleading the public, stating that the Supreme Court ruling only addressed procedural issues, not the substance of the case.

Konneh explained that while the NPP sought multiple reliefs at the Supreme Court, including a request to dismiss the election petition for being filed without a gazette, the court unanimously dismissed that argument.

“The NPP filed about five reliefs at the Supreme Court. The first one was that the court should set aside the petition, arguing that the petitioners filed it without a gazette.

That was dismissed by a unanimous 5-0 decision of the court,” Konneh said.

He further emphasized that the ruling focused on judicial bias, not the contempt charge itself. “What was upheld was the fact that the judge sitting on the case should recuse himself. But the contempt case still holds,” he added.

The Supreme Court directed that a new judge be assigned to continue the contempt proceedings.

Despite the NPP’s public celebrations, Konneh stressed that both the contempt case and the broader election petition remain pending.

AG’s briefings needless – Elvis Darko

0

Editor of NewsCenta, Elvis Darko, has criticised Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, for publicly commenting on the alleged payroll fraud at the National Service Authority (NSA), describing the move as “unnecessary” and potentially prejudicial.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, June 16, Darko expressed concern about Dr. Ayine’s remarks at a press conference held on Friday, June 13 arguing that such public pronouncements undermine the judicial process.

“I think the Attorney General should be mindful of his words. If it’s suspicion that you are investigating, that’s correct. But if you make a pronouncement that it is a criminal enterprise, it means you have already determined the fate of the case,” he said.

He added, “That pronouncement does not lie in the mouth of the Attorney General but rather the court. I think the Attorney General is being carried away by the public support and party support.”

His comments come in the wake of a June 13 press briefing in which the Attorney General disclosed alleged payroll fraud amounting to GH¢548 million and named 12 former NSA officials, including high-profile figures such as Mustapha Ussif, Osei Assibey Antwi, and Gifty Oware-Mensah.

But Darko questioned the timing and necessity of the press conference, warning that it could prejudice public opinion and the outcome of ongoing investigations.

“This public conference by the Attorney General, if you ask me, is needless. We need the pronouncement to be made by the court, then we can work with it.”

While emphasising the need for accountability, he stressed that due legal processes must be followed.

“I do not have sympathy for someone who steals public money. The state must deal with them. But the appropriate medium is to carry the case to court,” he added.

24yr Beautiful Cecilia Killed By Her Boyfriend For Ritual Purposes

News Hub Creator3h

A horrifying event has emerged from Cape Coast in Ghana’s Central Region, where Cecilia, a level 300 student studying marketing at Cape Coast Technical University, was brutally killed in what authorities suspect was a ritual murder. Her body was discovered at Ola Estate with severe mutilation to her private parts. Her boyfriend, Nicholas Ato Bronk Taylor, a physically attractive construction worker known for his skills in 3D design and Italian graphic artistry, was arrested after police investigations pointed to him. He allegedly confessed to the crime and was charged with murder. He was remanded and is expected to appear again in court.

Speaking anonymously with a news outlet, Cecilia’s sister revealed harrowing details about the victim’s brief romance with Taylor, which had only lasted three weeks. She noted that Cecilia had grown increasingly uncomfortable with Taylor’s possessive and emotionally manipulative behavior. A few days before her death, Cecilia had tried to cut ties with him, a move her sister believes provoked the fatal incident. She said Taylor often used the language of love to disguise his controlling actions and ultimately convinced Cecilia to visit him one last time, which turned out to be a trap.

The Central Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service confirmed Taylor’s confession, stating he had killed Cecilia for ritualistic purposes, believing it would bring him wealth. Police at the crime scene recovered a knife and various objects linked to occult practices, reinforcing suspicions that the murder was part of a planned ritual sacrifice.

Ghana begins immediate evacuation of citizens from Iran amid escalating Israel-Iran tensions

0

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, June 16, GNA – The Government of Ghana has commenced the urgent evacuation of its nationals from the Islamic Republic of Iran following the intensification of hostilities between Iran and Israel.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described the decision to evacuate Ghanaians as a measure to safeguard lives amid growing instability.

“The Mahama Administration, in the interest of protecting Ghanaian lives, has decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” he said.

As part of the emergency response, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff.

The evacuation, being carried out via Iran’s land borders, includes all categories of Ghanaian nationals —diplomats, students, professionals, and others residing in the country.

The Ministry further indicated that it was closely monitoring the unfolding situation in Israel and will soon provide an update on Ghana’s next steps.

In the meantime, operations at Ghana’s embassy in Tel Aviv have been scaled down significantly.

Mr Ablakwa added, “We have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department.”

The Government assured the public that every effort is being made to protect Ghanaian lives and keep citizens safe amid the crisis.

On June 13, 2025, Israel launched a major preemptive military operation, striking over 100 high-value targets across Iran.

These included military command centers, missile production facilities, nuclear research sites, and homes of senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officials.

According to official and intelligence-linked sources, Israel used a combination of airstrikes, long-range drones, and cyber sabotage.

Iranian authorities confirmed that several senior military and nuclear personnel were killed, including IRGC commander Hossein Salami and nuclear scientist Fereydoun Abbasi.

The strikes also damaged critical infrastructure in Tehran and western Iran, leading to hundreds of civilian casualties.

In response, Iran launched a retaliatory operation on the same day, named “Operation True Promise III”, firing more than 150 ballistic missiles and deploying over 100 drones toward major Israeli cities including Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Beersheba.

Israel’s Iron Dome and David’s Sling defense systems intercepted a majority of the incoming threats, but some managed to hit residential areas, killing at least 24 people and injuring nearly 500, according to Israeli emergency services.

Iran claims the Israeli strikes killed over 220 people, including military personnel and civilians, with more than 1,200 injured. It also reported damage to several oil facilities and military compounds.

The flare-up follows years of mounting tension over Iran’s nuclear programme, Israeli covert sabotage inside Iran, and Iran’s support for groups like Hezbollah and Palestinian factions.

This latest direct confrontation is the first time both states have openly targeted each other’s territory with full-scale missile and air campaigns.

While diplomatic efforts are underway behind the scenes, both governments have signaled readiness for further escalation if provoked.

The international community, including the United States, European Union, and the UN Security Council, has called for de-escalation and a return to diplomacy.

Mr Ablakwa In a firm diplomatic appeal, reiterated the Government of Ghana’s call on both Israel and Iran to de-escalate tensions and return to the path of dialogue.

“The Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities,” the Foreign Minister stressed.

“Akufo-Addo Gave Me ‘Nothing’ – Gabby Breaks Silence on ‘Prime Minister’ Tag

0

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has dismissed widespread claims suggesting he served as a “prime minister” under the previous administration as reported by Ghana Web.

He clarified that despite public speculation, he never held any official government position during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

Addressing the issue during an interview on Asaase Radio, Otchere-Darko explained that such rumors emerged after Akufo-Addo’s victory in 2017.

Speculation had mounted about potential appointments for him, but none materialized.

“All manner of titles were given to me including what, chief of staff, cabinet minister, and eventually, Akufo-Addo gave me nothing, not even a board member, not even an assembly member,” he stated.

Otchere-Darko further explained that the public perception of his influence led to an undue burden, as he was often credited or blamed for government actions he had no involvement in.

“It got a bit burdensome… you are blamed or given credit for things that you know very little about,” he said.

He also shed light on his occasional visits to the presidency, emphasizing that these were purely personal.

According to him, he would meet with President Akufo-Addo, his cousin, often late at night, primarily for casual conversations rather than political discussions.

“I just used to go visit my cousin, my friend, and my mentor… just to make him relax,” he revealed.

Otchere-Darko reiterated that he never held any decision-making role within the government, countering long-held public assumptions about his influence.

UEW Co-operative Union plants trees on AAMUSTED Campus

By Dorothy Frances Ward

Kumasi, June 16, GNA – The University of Education, Winneba Co-operative Credit Union (UEWCCU) has embarked on a tree-planting exercise at the Kumasi campus of the Akenten Appiah-Menkah University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts.

Led by Mr. Isaac Nii Amatey, Branch Manager of the UEWCCU at AAMUSTED, the exercise saw the planting of various fruit-bearing and shade trees, including coconut, mango, and orange seedlings.

The initiative was extended to the nearby Anglican Basic School, reflecting the Union’s broader commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement.

This greening effort also aligns with the Government of Ghana’s national ‘Tree for Life’ initiative, which aims to plant 30 million trees between June 5 and 30, 2025.

The national initiative seeks to restore approximately seven million hectares of degraded land and strengthen the country’s fight against climate change.

Mr. Amatey expressed satisfaction at the Union’s active role in supporting the government’s green initiative while also enhancing the natural landscape of AAMUSTED.

He emphasized that the Union is especially proud to contribute to environmental sustainability within its host institution.

“We have deliberately focused on planting mainly fruit-bearing seedlings so that the thousands of students of AAMUSTED could have easy access to them for their nutrition and good health,” he explained.

He also assured the university community that the Credit Union would collaborate with AAMUSTED authorities to nurture the seedlings to full maturity.

As an initial step, the UEWCCU will sponsor the installation of protective wire mesh fencing around the planted seedlings to guard against damage from animals.

Mr. Michael Kofi Twum-Ampomah, Acting Director of Public Affairs at AAMUSTED, received the donation and extended the University’s sincere appreciation to the Credit Union for the impactful gesture.

He lauded UEWCCU’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and community service, noting that this latest initiative builds on the Union’s previous support to the University.

These past contributions include the donation of chairs to the AAMUSTED Clinic and the provision of equipment to Mynd FM, the campus-based radio station.

Mr. Twum-Ampomah highlighted the strong and mutually beneficial relationship between the University and the UEWCCU, whose membership is made up largely of AAMUSTED staff.

He expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to flourish, especially as the Credit Union continues to provide essential financial services such as savings and loan schemes to university staff.

I get worried when musicians disrespect TGMAs

Musician Keche Joshua (pictured) says he get worried when musicians disrespect TGMAs Musician Keche Joshua (pictured) says he get worried when musicians disrespect TGMAs

Joshua, a member of the popular ‘Keche’ music group, has expressed dissatisfaction with artistes who fail to attend the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) despite being nominated.

Speaking on GhanaWeb’s X Space on June 13, 2025, Keche Joshua noted that it is utterly disrespectful to Ghanaians and the global audience when musicians fail to show up on stage to receive their awards.

He emphasised that he becomes concerned whenever such incidents occur during the TGMAs.

“To be honest, it is a very bad thing to do… When they nominated Black Sherif [for BETs] I saw the way he posted it several times, but when it comes to the TGMAs I see some of our artistes don’t even post it. That was why I got angry when they gave the Best Group award to Team Eternity.

“Because I didn’t see them posting it online but Keche was making a lot of noise about it and people voted for us… This thing worries me because this is our Grammys,” he said.

Keche Joshua further called on patrons to support the TGMAs and other awards schemes in the country.

“For now this is what we have. It is a private company that organising this for us. We don’t have the backing of the government so we should let the people know that we appreciate the things they are doing for us so that they will continue doing it for us.

“I don’t even know why they are doing what they are doing. Sometimes an artiste will win an award and someone who isn’t even a member of the team will climb the stage for the plaque. It is not a good thing… We should take our TGMAs as a world cup,” he added.

Local fuel prices will ‘inevitably’ be affected by surge in global oil prices

0

Fuel prices have reduced at the pumps as of June 16, 2025 Fuel prices have reduced at the pumps as of June 16, 2025

A Senior Research Fellow and development economist at the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy (IERPP), Dr Kwasi Nyame-Baafi, has noted that the recent increase in global oil prices will impact fuel prices in Ghana.

According to him, the gains Ghana recorded in recent months were largely due to developments in the global oil market—not domestic policy interventions.

His comments follow the government’s decision to postpone the implementation of the GH¢1 Energy Sector Levy, popularly referred to as the “Dumsor Tax,” citing global market volatility as the reason.

“When I pointed out on June 4, 2025, that the drop in fuel prices in Ghana was largely driven by falling global oil prices, not domestic policy decisions, I was vilified by some within the NDC,” he stated.

“When I warned that the GH¢1 ‘Dumsor Tax’ was flawed and would ultimately backfire once global oil prices rose again, I was labelled an ‘economist of doom.’ But what are we seeing today?

“The government has now been forced to suspend the Dumsor Levy due to rising global oil prices triggered by an exogenous shock, an event completely beyond our control. This surge will inevitably be reflected in local fuel prices. Only God knows how long it will last,” he was quoted by 3news.com.

Dr Nyame-Baafi also raised concerns about the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, calling it artificial and unsustainable.

He explained that the cedi’s performance is being propped up by temporary external factors, such as the recent spike in global gold prices, trends that may not persist.

“Let me repeat what I’ve said before: this artificial over-appreciation of the cedi is not sustainable. Forcing the Bank of Ghana to maintain an exchange rate of 10 cedis to the dollar is both costly and economically unwise. Let’s be honest—manipulating the exchange rate only delays the inevitable. It undermines export competitiveness, risks depleting our reserves, and leaves us more vulnerable to external shocks in the long term.

“High gold prices will not last forever,” he cautioned.

Meanwhile, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have responded to the postponement of the levy by reducing prices of petroleum products at the pumps, effective today, June 16, 2025.

‘Forget women, drinking and smoking’ – Bukom Banku tells aspiring boxing champions

0

Bukom Banku is a former boxer Bukom Banku is a former boxer

Retired Ghanaian boxing icon, Braimah Kamoko, popularly known as Bukom Banku, has offered some advice to young fighters hoping to follow in the footsteps of Ghana’s boxing greats.

Speaking to Citi Sports, the outspoken former WBO Africa champion emphasised the importance of discipline and clean living in the sport.

“Forget about women, smoking, and drinking, and listen to your coach – you can become a world champion,” he said.

He further stated that discipline is the foundation of success in boxing, and without it, young fighters cannot hope to reach the elite level of some Ghanaian legends.

“If you’re a boxer, you have to be disciplined. No alcohol, no smoking, no womanising, if you really want to be like Ike Quartey, Azumah Nelson, Bukom Banku, Joshua Clottey, and others who are highly regarded,” he added.

Born on August 17, 1980, Bukom Banku first rose to national prominence after clinching a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 1999 All-Africa Games in Johannesburg, South Africa.

He went on to win the WBO Africa Light Heavyweight title in 2011 and followed it up with the WBO Africa Cruiserweight title a year later.

He enjoyed an impressive undefeated run with a 28-0-0 (21 KOs) record until October 21, 2017, when he suffered his first professional loss via TKO against Bastie Samir at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

He bounced back with a third-round win over Germany’s Rojhat Bilgetekin in Bradford, UK, in 2019.

Although now retired, Bukom Banku remains a voice in Ghana’s boxing community and is keen to see the next generation carry the torch with discipline and dedication.

Nayiri accuses security personnel of unfair treatment of commuters

New Customs Chief Signals Shift In Fight Against Illicit Trade – CFF Ghana

0

Richard Kasu

The Executive Director of the Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF Ghana), Richard Kasu, says the appointment of Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan (Rtd) as Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Customs Division is key in addressing the country’s growing illicit trade challenge, which continues to drain national coffers and erode public trust.

According to Mr. Kasu, the new Commissioner brings the discipline and vision required to reverse a troubling trend that has seen significant state revenue losses due to smuggling and related activities.

In a statement issued and signed by CFF Ghana, the think tank acknowledged that the retired military officer steps into the role with a clear mandate, to clamp down on illicit trade and help safeguard the nation’s fragile economic recovery.

Mr. Kasu stressed that Brig. Gen. Annan’s appointment is more than a routine leadership change. It reflects heightened national concern over the economic toll of cross-border crimes, including cocoa and gold smuggling, and the circulation of counterfeit pharmaceuticals and tobacco products. These illicit flows, often underestimated, not only deplete government revenues but also destabilise legitimate business operations.

A career military officer known for discipline and strategic clarity, Brig. Gen. Annan is no stranger to high-stakes leadership. Though retired from active service, his return to public duty signals the government’s renewed commitment to tackling entrenched challenges within the Customs Division.

Sources close to the Presidency describe him as “principled and patriotic,” with the credibility and capacity to reform a system long accused of lax enforcement and operational inefficiencies.

The challenges ahead are significant. The country’s porous borders and well-organised smuggling networks have long impeded effective trade monitoring and tariff collection. These clandestine activities have real-world consequences: lost public revenue, risks to public health, and unfair competition for local industries.

Brig. Gen. Annan (Rtd) succeeds Brig. Gen. Ziblim Ayorrogo, under whose leadership the Customs Division recorded a historic revenue performance of GH¢152.977 billion, exceeding the 2024 fiscal target. While his predecessor leaves behind a strong financial record, many insiders note that critical enforcement and institutional reforms remain incomplete.

Mr. Kasu observed that in Ghana’s industrial zones and trading hubs, expectations are high that the new Commissioner will curb the unfair competition posed by smuggled goods and restore market integrity.

He further argued that the issue is not only about lost revenue, but also about governance. “Illicit trade thrives where institutions are weak. Brigadier General Annan’s job is not just to catch smugglers, it’s to rebuild trust in the Customs system,” he said.

Epixode: Live performance is the ultimate test of a true artiste

0

THERE’S no doubt Ghanaian Dancehall artiste Epixode has a strong stage presence. Anytime he picks the mic, especially during live performances, he leaves nothing but a lasting impression behind.

In fact, his performance transcends just the music; he engages the crowd with direct interaction, powerful body language, and an emotional connection that resonates deeply.

In a chat with Graphic Showbiz on Monday, June 9, about the inspiration behind his stagecraft, the Atia singer emphasised that an artiste’s relevance hinged on constant skill development, particularly in live performances.

He believes that mastering this aspect is crucial for a sustainable career in the industry. “I think it’s essential for every artiste and their team to invest in developing that side of the craft. An artiste’s longevity often depends on their ability to engage and entertain live audiences,” he added. (Read I want to do a show with Shatta Wale before I die – Agya Koo Nimo)

Epixode, however, admits the hurdles artistes face when performing with live bands. He reflected on the evolution of live music in Ghana, noting that many young artistes today lacked the experience needed for compelling live performances.

“Many artistes struggle with this because live performances weren’t common during our formative years. Luckily, I come from a background where live music was integral, and I see the importance of honing this skill,” he said.

Nonetheless, he goes on to acknowledge the diverse strengths among musicians—some excel in the studio, others in songwriting, and some shine on stage. Epixode considers himself fortunate to be recognised as one of Ghana’s top live performers.

“Every artiste has their strengths. Some might be great in the booth, while others thrive in writing or performing. It’s a blessing to be acknowledged among the best performers in Ghana.

LatexFoamPromo

Moving away from live performances, Epixode touched on his recent win of the Music for Good Award at the Ghana Music Awards.

According to Epixode, who also aimed to use his music to inspire and address social issues, he saw the award as a significant accolade. He views the recognition not merely as a personal achievement but as a validation of his commitment to meaningful artistry.

“Winning the Music for Good Award is huge for me as a growing artiste. While many songs are crafted for dancing and enjoyment, I believe music should also serve deeper purposes–healing and conveying essential messages. I’m proud to use my lyrics and melodies to highlight pressing societal issues,” he commented.

Touching on his latest single, Millions, Epixode, real name Theophilus Nii Arday Otoo, said the song was about the universal drive for success.

“Millions is a Dancehall anthem about the pursuit of big dreams—similar to the common saying, ‘I want money; I want to be big.’ For me, ‘I want millions’ signifies more than just monetary wealth; it represents success in all aspects of life. The line ‘we pray for millions’ embodies these ambitions,” he explained.

Minority calls for comprehensive revenue reform as it urges full repeal of suspended Dumsor levy

0

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi and the Ranking Member on the Committee of the Economy and Development

The Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Committee of Economy and Development, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called on the government to go beyond merely suspending the controversial 8% ‘Dumsor’ levy and scrap it entirely.

Speaking in response to the government’s recent decision to halt implementation of the energy sector levy, (aka dumsor levy) Mr. Oppong Nkrumah argued that the move exposes deeper flaws in Ghana’s fiscal planning.

He said the suspension confirms what the Minority had warned from the outset—that the levy would raise fuel prices and was premised on flawed assumptions about global oil price stability.

“We are asking that government should scrap it altogether because the government doesn’t really need this levy.”

The levy, intended to raise GH¢5.7 billion to support energy sector interventions, drew strong criticism from the public, industry players, and the Minority, which questioned its timing and necessity.

According to Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, the real issue lies not in revenue generation alone but in the government’s broader fiscal strategy.

He pointed to an earlier projection by the Minority that the removal of selected taxes without corresponding expenditure cuts would create a GH¢6 billion hole in the 2025 budget—an estimate that closely mirrors the GH¢5.7 billion shortfall the levy sought to fill.

“Let me give you some history. In 2017, the NPP administration removed about 17 taxes, and we lost the revenues from them. We tried to close the gap, but because we could not conclusively do it, our buffers were limited. So when global shocks hit, we were left at the losing end.

“And that’s why we’re saying to our friends in government, do not repeat this mistake. We should use this period as a period not for blame or praise, but a period to conduct a comprehensive and transparent review of the revenue lines as a country with the view to developing sustainable, reliable fiscal resilience.”

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah stressed that the government must seize the opportunity to initiate a comprehensive evaluation of the efficiency and equity of the country’s revenue mobilisation mechanisms, emphasising the need for a transparent, sustainable, and citizen-sensitive approach to public finance that enhances Ghana’s long-term fiscal resilience.

“This is not just about scrapping a levy. It’s about building a revenue system that is agile, fair, and capable of delivering tangible results for the Ghanaian people,” he said.

“We on the minority side will support any such effort with the lessons we have learned, with the ideas and our suggestions. Ghana doesn’t need just the scrapping of these levies. Ghana needs levies that are sustainable, that make sense and that deliver results for her people.

“And we on the Minority, will do our best to contribute to those ideas,” he said.

IGP, POMAD members at the Police Hospital

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno and some members of the Police Management Board (POMAD) have paid a working visit to the Police Hospital, Accra to appreciate the hospital’s administration and staff for their effective management of the high numbers of patients who turned to the hospital to seek medical attention during the strike action by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association.

The Medical Director of the hospital, Commissioner of Police, Dr. Otu Nyarko, who received the IGP and his team, informed them that over the past one week, the hospital saw over 300% increase in the number of patients who visit the hospital to access medical care.

A similar situation was reported at the Police Hospital, Kumasi and other Police clinics across the country. He added that even though this brought some pressure on the hospital, contingency measures were put in place to manage the situation.  In addition, all doctors on annual leave and study leave were called back to duty in order to ensure that no person in need of healthcare was turned away.

The IGP commended the Medical Director and his team for their sense of duty, and thanked them for their invaluable service during such critical moments. He urged all the officers and civilian staff of the hospital to continue to work hard to save lives, and ensure that every patient who calls at the hospital receives the needed medical attention.

He further noted that the recent commissioning of the Police Hospital at Kumasi could not have come at a better time. He gave assurances of the Police Administration’s readiness to continue to provide the support necessary to improve service delivery at the hospital and all other Police medical facilities.

‘Your studio is built with money from women you dupe’ – Kwaku Manu slams Okatakyie

Kumawood actor Kwaku Manu has taken fresh shots at social activist Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, as their ongoing social media feud continues to intensify.

For over a week now, the two have been at each other’s throat, following Kwaku Manu’s accusation that Okatakyie has a personal agenda behind his persistent criticism of self-styled medical practitioner, ‘Dr.’ Anne Sansa Daly.

In response to the accusation, Okatakyie threatened during his show to expose personal secrets about Kwaku Manu.

In the latest development, Kwaku Manu in a bit to hit back, has accused Okatakyie of duping wealthy women, claiming that his studio was built with money obtained from such activities.

“I don’t depend on women like you do. Even the studio you’re using right now is funded by a woman and a political party. It’s women who are taking care of you. You’re known for using black magic on women, especially wealthy women abroad,” he claimed.

Kwaku Manu went on to further allege that Okatakyie is heavily involved in black magic and has deliberately sabotaged the success of others for personal gain.

“When it comes to black magic, don’t even start, because that’s your domain. You’re the one who constantly visits juju men, preventing others from reaching their potential just so women will keep supporting you. You even take personal items from women to use in juju rituals,” he added.

Timelines should be set for criminal and civil cases – Justice Senyo Dzamefe

0

Justice Senyo Dzamefe is a Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe is a Supreme Court nominee

Supreme Court nominee, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, has called for the introduction of strict timelines for the resolution of criminal and civil cases in the courts to accelerate the pace of justice delivery in the country.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, June 16, 2025, he explained that time-bound litigation would compel all parties, including the judiciary, to work within defined schedules, thereby curbing unnecessary delays that often frustrate litigants.

“I think we must set timelines for cases. Let’s say criminal cases, three months; civil, six months. There must be a timeline. Then the parties, as well as the court, know that we are within a certain time period to finish cases,” he stated.

Justice Dzamefe argued that true reform of the justice system must start by prioritising the people who keep the system running, which is the human resource.

“Think of the human resource, that is a mistake a lot of people make. First, think of those who give you the product,” he stressed.

“So, Mr. Chairman, the first is to motivate the staff,” he added.

Justice Dzamefe also mentioned that one of the key reasons for the slow pace of justice is the overloading of a few courts with too many cases.

The Supreme Court nominee further suggested that expanding court infrastructure would help decentralise caseloads and ensure more efficient adjudication.

“If you want work to go on fast, you mustn’t load one entity too much. So, what do we do? We need more courts. When we have more courts, the job is spread thin and it goes faster,” he explained.

Beyond infrastructure and staffing, Justice Dzamefe pointed out the urgent need to invest in modern tools and adopt new technologies, especially artificial intelligence, to streamline court processes.

“The time of long handwriting is past, so we have to go to AI tools like voice recording and transcription, so that by the end of the day, just as the court is sitting, the records are ready,” he said.

He also proposed a nationwide rollout of virtual courts, noting that this would reduce the number of adjournments and eliminate the need for physical presence in some cases.

“When you have virtual courts, you can still give evidence wherever you are, and the case goes on,” he explained.

BoG predicts lower inflation

Dr Zakari Mumuni, First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Zakari Mumuni, First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana

The Bank of Ghana anticipates a decline in inflation rates in the near future, driven by the strict monetary policies currently in place.

First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Zakari Mumuni, stated that the country’s inflation rate is projected to decline further toward the year-end target of 12%, as a result of the Bank’s tight monetary policy stance.

Dr Mumuni made these remarks while speaking at the Ghana Diaspora Investment Forum in Accra.

He highlighted the improved macroeconomic environment as a key factor that will support the reduction in inflation.

“Macroeconomic fundamentals are projected to improve further to create a business-friendly environment for investors, while growth is projected to remain strong throughout the year,” he said.

The First Deputy BoG Governor also noted that remittance inflows have become vital to Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves.

He also expects that ongoing reforms to tighten foreign exchange rules will help reduce remittance costs.

Dr Zakari stated that the Bank of Ghana has enhanced security and transparency measures to encourage greater investment from diaspora communities.

He further mentioned that the Central Bank will continue to develop innovative financial solutions tailored to the needs of the diaspora, to facilitate their investments and settlement plans.

‘I knew Adom Nyame would show up’ – Joseph Sackey explains Adom Kyei’s sticker on his trunks

0

Joseph Sackey (R) had a sticker of Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah (L) on his trunks Joseph Sackey (R) had a sticker of Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah (L) on his trunks

Despite suffering a crushing fifth-round knockout at the hands of British opponent Abdul Khan, Ghanaian boxer Joseph Sackey believes his faith never failed him; only the officiating did.

The young pugilist, who stepped into the ring on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the Battle of the Beasts boxing event in Bukom, entered the bout armed with more than just gloves and footwork.

On the back of his boxing trunks was a sticker of Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah, the leader of the Believers Worship Centre, also known as the Philadelphia Church.

To Sackey, this wasn’t for show. It was a declaration of belief, and spiritual protection.

“I knew even with the next two rounds Adom Nyame would do something. I used all of Adom Kyei’s spiritual things. I had Grace Oil, Miracle Oil, and even drank Sobolo before leaving the house. I don’t only use the sticker,” Sackey said in the aftermath of his defeat.

The image of the popular prophet, revered by many of his followers as a man of miracles, symbolised Sackey’s trust that divine intervention could tilt the fight in his favour.

He entered the ring with confidence not just in his fists, but in his faith.

But the night didn’t end the way he hoped.

According to Sackey, it wasn’t a lack of power or preparation that cost him the fight, but a controversial moment involving the referee.

“The referee tripped me. He locked my leg while separating us. That’s what made me fall. Even though Adom Nyame did his part, the referee didn’t allow it to come through,” he insisted.

Heavy rains in dry season cause havoc in DR Congo’s capital

0

Flimsy buildings and a lack of proper drainage have worsened the flooding crisis in Kinshasa Flimsy buildings and a lack of proper drainage have worsened the flooding crisis in Kinshasa

At least 29 people have been killed in flood waters and landslides in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, following unusually heavy rains in the dry season, the interior ministry has said.

Homes were swept away, roads were flooded, and widespread power cuts were recorded as a third of the city was affected by the downpour.

DR Congo’s meteorological agency Mettelsat said that 90mm (3.5in) of rain was recorded on Saturday morning – higher than on any single day during the rainy season that lasts from November to May.

Experts say the heavy rains are being fuelled by climate change. The consequences are devastating because of a lack of urban planning and proper drainage.

Kinshasa sits on the Congo river, which is one of the longest in the world and stretches across the country.

Many residents of the capital live in poorly built homes, or near areas prone to flooding, as its population grows with an influx of people from other parts of the country.

Kinshasa’s population is estimated to be nearing18 million – an increase of more than 4% from 2024, according to Macrotrends.

Interior Minister Shabani Lukoo chaired a crisis meeting to coordinate the government’s flood response, the interior ministry said in a statement.

The government extended its condolences to bereaved families, and would cover the funeral expenses of the 29 people who died, it added.

More than 100 people died in flash floods in eastern DR Congo’s South Kivu region in May, and more than 30 in Kinshasa in April.

MTN volunteers and OIC students sewing the uniforms

AS PART of the MTN Ghana Y’ello Care initiative, a volunteerism campaign that seeks to drive meaningful change across communities nationwide, a group of volunteers joined fashion students of the Opportunities and Industrialisation Centre (OIC) in producing school uniforms.

The school uniforms, comprising approximately 500 pieces, is intended to be donated to needy schools in the Central Region of the country.

Addressing journalists in a brief interview, Education Portfolio Advisor at MTN Ghana, Ebenezer Terpkeh, indicated that the employees’ engagement with the students is to help the students, mentor them, and teach them skills, to empower them.

“We don’t just want to give them opportunities without guidance. We’re doing this to ensure they get involved in the activities and learn from them. We’re teaching them that finishing is key, especially in the fashion industry, where attention to detail is often lacking. We want them to develop a taste for quality work,” he said.

Mr. Terpkeh further added that the initiative will also train young persons in social media and mobile marketing, content creation, and smart education, including how to effectively use the internet.

“We’ll introduce them to MTN apps and other education-focused apps, and encourage them to register. Additionally, we’re engaging with farmers and exploring the concept of a ‘smart farm’ through AgriConnect, a project currently taking place in the North. We aim to infuse technology into their existing activities,” he stressed.

Ahead of the volunteers’ engagement with the fashion students, Mr. Terpkeh added that they visited the classrooms to motivate students and introduce them to emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), highlighting how they can apply their skills in innovative ways.

“The goal is to embed a passion for technology and learning in these young minds. We’ve observed the students actively engaged in the sewing process, with our volunteers participating alongside them. We’re excited to see the impact of this initiative and explore opportunities to expand it to more places,” he added.

I stand by the constitutional term limit for presidents – Justice Dzamefe

0

Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has affirmed his unyielding support for the constitutional provision on presidential term limits, emphasizing his respect for what is clearly outlined in the 1992 Constitution.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, 2025, Justice Dzamefe was asked by Suame MP John Darko to share his views on Article 66(2) of the Constitution, which limits a person to two terms as President of the Republic of Ghana.

“Do you think this provision is subject to interpretation?” the MP asked.

In response, Justice Dzamefe stated: “Mr. Chairman, the honourable member referred to the constitution, and that is what the constitution says. So I can’t have anything against what is in the constitution.”

His remarks come amid growing political tension following allegations by Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who has claimed that President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are pursuing an agenda to secure a third presidential term.

In an interview on May 1, 2025, Afenyo-Markin pointed to the recent nomination of seven Justices to the Supreme Court as evidence of such a plan.

“It is obvious that the bold attempts by the president to nominate out of the blue, seven judges, to the Supreme Court are the first major attempt at all that they have rehearsed; a third-term agenda.

“All that the NDC is doing is through the advice of the hawks of NDC to set a third term agenda for its leadership,” he alleged.

President Mahama, on April 30, 2025, nominated seven Justices of the Court of Appeal for elevation to the Supreme Court. The move, in accordance with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, is intended to bolster the apex court with seasoned judicial expertise in the face of rising constitutional and governance challenges.

What is Article 66 (2) of the Constitution says

“A person shall not be qualified for election as the President of Ghana unless -(a) he is a citizen of Ghana by birth;(b) he has attained the age of forty years; and(c) he is a person who is otherwise qualified to be elected a Member of Parliament, except that the disqualifications set out in paragraphs (c), (d), and (e) of clause (2) of article 94 of this Constitution shall not be removed, in respect of any such person, by a presidential pardon or by the lapse of time as provided for in clause (5) of that article.

Justice Dzamefe kicks against raising retirement age for judges from 70 to 75

0

Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has made it clear that he does not support calls to review the retirement age for judges of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal from 70 to 75.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting on Monday, 16 June, Justice Dzamefe said he strongly believes the current retirement age of 70 should be maintained.

“I will not agree with sending the retirement ages of Supreme Court or Appeal Court judges to 75. No,” he said. “The retirement age as at now is 70. Superior court judges retire on their salaries.”

He explained that traditionally, age and experience were important factors in judicial work, but technology has changed that reality.

“Formally, you need to be advanced in age to get the experience and the exposure so that when you give judgment, it is respected. It is a solid judgment because you’re adding personal experience to the legal knowledge you have,” he said.

“But of late, technology has made it such that what you needed 60 or 70 years to know, technology can make it available to you very early,” he explained. “So personally, my opinion is to keep it at 70. That is my opinion, not 75.”

Justice Dzamefe also shared his view that judges should retire while still strong and in good health so they can continue to serve the justice system in other ways.

“I want judges to retire very healthy, and then we can use them for other purposes, like assessors. They can help the judiciary or the service in other forms, like helping to filter out cases,” he added.

“So I think we maintain it at the 70 as at now. That is my opinion,” he said.

Ryan Taylor (L) says DJ Cuppy (R) isn't a woman enough to mother his child Ryan Taylor (L) says DJ Cuppy (R) isn’t a woman enough to mother his child

Ryan Taylor, the ex-boyfriend of popular disc jockey DJ Cuppy, has stirred controversy online following a comment he made on social media after posting a photo of himself with his child.

On Father’s Day, June 15, 2025, Ryan Taylor took to Instagram to share pictures of himself with his child. In the post, the YouTuber and former boxer expressed a desire to address racial issues for the sake of his child.

“I’m gonna solve racism one black baby at a time. Happy Father’s Day!!!” he wrote.

Following the post, a fan commented that the child bore a resemblance to Ryan’s ex-girlfriend, DJ Cuppy.

In response, Ryan threw shade at Cuppy, stating that she wasn’t “woman enough” to mother his child.

“She wasn’t enough of a woman to even fathom creating such a beautiful creation like mine. Please leave and don’t come back,” he replied.

His comment quickly drew backlash on social media, with many users criticising his statements.

One user wrote: “You think it’s only Nigerians dragging you? See person wey be like tripod stand… As a Ghanaian, I don’t blame you. It’s Cuppy that settled for less. See nose like he supplies the whole of Accra with carbon dioxide. Banku feeling funky.”

Another user, Folu, added: “I literally blame Cuppy for settling for someone like you. She had no business pitying you enough to date you, but she did. You can’t even measure up to her. She’s driven, beautiful, educated, and talented.

It’s your loss, not hers. Also, your caption isn’t very sound, it’s actually extremely weird. Black babies don’t need to be ‘saved’ by you. Work on yourself first. Ojuelegba Mike Tyson.”

‘You can’t distract me with your cocaine business’ – Okatakyie claps back at Kwaku Manu

Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah (L) has said he won't be distracted by actor Kwaku Manu (R) play videoOkatakyie Afrifa-Mensah (L) has said he won’t be distracted by actor Kwaku Manu (R)

Social activist and media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has responded to Kumawood actor Kwaku Manu following the latter’s recent accusations on social media.

In a video making rounds online, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah fired back at Kwaku Manu, stating that the actor cannot distract him with what he described as baseless accusations.

He also alleged that Kwaku Manu is involved in money laundering and the cocaine business.

“You can’t distract me. If I want to talk about your cocaine business, I will. But again, you can’t distract me. I can even reveal the children you killed in your school. He is not needed,” Afrifa-Mensah said.

Okatakyie also stated that going forward, he would no longer tolerate any comments or provocations from Kwaku Manu.

“From now on, say whatever you want. You won’t hear a word from me because I’ve received numerous calls from respected individuals. I was even embarrassed when they asked me not to engage with you anymore.

“At the end of the day, I cannot lower myself to this guy’s level… When I go head-to-head with him, he can’t say anything sensible,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kwaku Manu has also levelled damning accusations against Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, claiming the media personality is known for duping wealthy women, and that his studio was even built with money from women.

“I don’t depend on women like you do. Even the studio you’re using right now is funded by a woman and a political party. Women are the ones taking care of you. You’re known for using black magic on women, especially rich ones abroad,” Kwaku Manu alleged.

Let’s embrace mandatory military training to strengthen Ghanaian youth – NSA official

Fuseini Donkor, the Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations at the NSA Fuseini Donkor, the Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations at the NSA

The National Service Authority (NSA) is moving forward with its plan to implement mandatory one-month military training for all National Service personnel.

This was reiterated by Fuseini Donkor, the Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations at the NSA, during an interview with Okay FM on June 16, 2025.

Donkor emphasised that this initiative aims to instill essential values in the nation’s youth.

“This initiative is necessary for our youth to build the sense of patriotism, discipline, and mental fortitude,” he stated.

The proposed military training, officially known as the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme (NSERRP), was first announced after a meeting between NSA leadership and the Military High Command on April 23, 2025, at the Ministry of Defence in Accra.

This program is designed to provide service personnel with basic military drills and orientation.

The initiative aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision, as outlined in his maiden State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025.

During that address, the president proposed short-term military training for graduates to foster discipline, patriotism, and physical readiness.

Director-General of the NSA, Felix Gyamfi, previously stated that the NSERRP would involve up to two months of composite drills as part of the service personnel’s experience.

Fuseini Donkor urged all personnel to comply with the training, believing it will significantly impact their lives and shape their understanding of contributing to national development.

The basic military training is scheduled to commence on August 3, 2025.
