Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed delight with the progress of English-born Ghanaian duo Tyrique George and Josh Acheampong.
George and Acheampong were both promoted to the first team after impressing the Italian trainer during the pre-season tour of the United States last summer.
Both players made their senior team debut in the current campaign and have made a significant impact as Chelsea chase a UEFA Champions League qualification spot while also reaching the last four of the Conference League.
George, a winger, netted his first Premier League goal for Chelsea in the comeback victory over Fulham on Sunday.
“I’m very happy for Tyrique, him and Josh Acheampong, both from the academy, we decided to promote them because they are good talent, [and] they have to [keep] working hard,” said Maresca.
Acheampong was an unused substitute at Craven Cottage as Pedro Neto scored an incredible last-gasp winner.
“Pedro’s goal, we all know that Pedro is better on the right side, but we also have Noni, we have also Jadon, so I try to decide game by game, but Pedro is doing well since he arrived here,” added Maresca.
President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has cautioned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) risks losing public support ahead of the 2028 elections due to recent statements made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo as per reports from MyNewsGH.
According to Cudjoe, Dr. Prempeh, who currently serves as Energy Minister, should refrain from engaging in political commentary, especially when such remarks are perceived as dismissive or inflammatory.
He argued that the Minister’s recent comments concerning President John Mahama have the potential to alienate voters rather than attract support to the party.
Napo, in a recent interview, claimed that President Mahama had performed so poorly within just three months in office that he could not even assign him a rating.
This comment has stirred public debate, with some accusing the Minister of making unfair and exaggerated assessments.
In a brief social media post, Cudjoe remarked, “Another one… he has begun reducing the votes of the NPP in 2028…” — a clear indication of his concern over the potential impact of such rhetoric.
The IMANI Africa boss has previously voiced concerns over political communication strategies, urging party figures to prioritize issue-based discussions over personal attacks.
He suggested that statements like Napo’s have contributed to the NPP’s electoral struggles in the past, including the 2024 polls.
While Napo remains a key figure in the party, critics like Cudjoe argue that his public utterances may be doing more harm than good as the NPP looks ahead to reclaim electoral strength in future contests.
The Media Coalition Against Galamsey has called on the government to publish the names of individuals and entities importing and financing excavators used in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.
According to the Coalition, the government’s recent initiative to trace chassis numbers of excavators to their financiers is long overdue and must be followed by publicly naming the key players behind these operations.
In an interview with Citi News, the Convenor of the Coalition, Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey, urged the government to adopt even stricter measures in its fight against galamsey.
“The list of these excavators that have been seized, let’s start it off. The current raid at Samreboi, over 17 excavators, who are the people who imported them, and who are the people renting them?
“So that we can start naming these people who are part of the problems. And in the process let’s trace the money. If you trace the money, you will get to the root cause of these excavators. Government has mentioned it, but it’s taking too long for them to do it,” he said.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has exposed what he described as a well-organized criminal syndicate operating under the name of Akonta Mining Company Ltd.
Though the company was legally granted a lease to mine off-reserve, the Minister revealed that Akonta Mining had illegally invaded protected forest reserves in the Samreboi enclave of the Western North Region — selling access to the Aboi Forest Reserve for GHC 300,000 per concession, collecting 250 grams of gold weekly in royalties, and protecting illegal miners who devastated the Tano River and forest compartments with impunity.

Media personality and entertainment pundit, MC Yaa Yeboah, has criticised Bishop Dag Heward-Mills’ recent remarks that church musicians should not be paid for their services, arguing that skilled instrumentalists deserve fair compensation for their work.
Yeboah’s comments, made during a heated discussion on United Showbiz, came in response to the bishop’s viral statement declaring that paying church musicians is “absolute nonsense.”
While she acknowledged that some musicians may serve voluntarily due to divine calling, Yeboah insisted that those who have invested time and resources into mastering their craft should be paid, especially if their contributions aid in worship sessions and help retain members.
“It is very funny how pastors and other men of God always find a way to downplay the importance of music in their churches. For many pastors, the church is a business enterprise. They are managing the faith of the congregation for a fee. That is how I see it.
“So, if you are an instrumentalist and you know that whatever you’re doing is taking away a chunk of your time and your pastor tells you that whatever you’re doing is not even important and you don’t even deserve pay, run away from that church with the speed of alacrity because your pastor is robbing you of your livelihood,” she said.
MC Yaa Yeboah further questioned why pastors receive financial support while musicians are expected to work for free.
“What Bishop Dag Heward-Mills decides to do with his church is his own business. But there are many talented instrumentalists who are still living hand to mouth because they have been told they are not supposed to make money from whatever they are doing.
“There are some churches in this country where the pastors don’t pay rent, or their children’s school fees, or what they will eat. The church pays for everything. That is why in Rwanda, the directive was given for pastors to have a steady job before going into ministry,” she added.
Yeboah also took aim at what she described as the commercialisation of churches, suggesting that many pastors treat congregations as business ventures.
“If the GRA audited Ghana’s churches, they’d find many pastors whose only ‘job’ is church work,” she claimed.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has asked the Minerals Commission to revoke the mining license of Akonta Mining Ltd over illegal operations.
According to him, a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the discovery of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.
Akonta Mining Ltd is owned by NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
During a press briefing on April 21, 2025, the minister said: “Some interviews conducted with a few residents indicate that the modus operandi of Akonta Mining is to use force to enter and destroy even the farmlands and produce of poor farmers in the area.
“Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (17th April 2025), an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.”
According to the minister, the operation in Compartment 49, which began at 5 AM and lasted a whopping 12 hours, resulted in:
• Seizure of about 30 excavators, 5 recovered and impounded at the operation base
• 2 Pump-action guns loaded with 5 and 2 rounds of BB cartridges each, 1 single-barrel gun retrieved
• Confiscation of 2 Toyota Hilux pickups, 1 Toyota RAV4, 4 motorbikes, and a cache of mining equipment.
He added that all suspects have been transported to Accra and are in the custody of the Ghana Police Service, pending prosecution.
“In light of the overwhelming evidence, I have authorised the Minerals Commission to immediately take steps to revoke the lease with immediate effect. I’ve directed the Forestry Commission and of Director of Forestry Commission officials connected to these illegalities to immediately investigate pending further investigations and prosecution.
“Security agencies have been notified to investigate security officers who have had dealings with a contamination in this particular forest reserve. The Attorney General has also been briefed and has taken over the investigation for further action,” he added.

PRESS BRIEFING BY HON. EMMANUEL ARMAH-KOFI BUAH, MINISTER FOR LANDS AND NATURAL RESOURCES, ON THE GOVERNMENT’S SUSTAINED FIGHT AGAINST ILLEGAL MINING (GALAMSEY)
Accra, April 21, 2025 – Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen of the press. As you may recall from our previous engagements, this government, under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, remains unwavering in our commitment to eradicate the scourge of illegal mining—an environmental sin against humanity and, against God. We promised to carry the good people of Ghana along with periodic updates, and today, I am here to provide key developments in this fight.
Last month, we assured the nation that we would intensify efforts to trace the financiers and owners of the heavy-duty equipment used for illegal mining. Today, we are pleased to announce a significant breakthrough in this critical fight.
One of the most egregious cases we have uncovered involves Akonta Mining Company Ltd., a company legally registered and granted a government lease to mine responsibly off-reserve outside the forest.
The company, however, does not possess an entry permit into the forest reserve of the Samreboi enclave of the Western North Region. Yet, investigations reveal that Akonta Mining has flagrantly abused this lease.
In August 2022, the Forestry Commission, with the assistance of the Ghana Police, made some arrests of persons associated with Akonta Mining, encroaching on the forest reserves, specifically compartment 161. The docket was supposedly transferred to Accra for further action, and yet nothing was heard of the case.
This company has not only trespassed into protected reserves but has become a criminal syndicate, selling access of the Aboi Forest Reserve to illegal miners for a staggering GHC 300,000 per concession. Worse, these illegal miners operate under Akonta’s protection, devastating the River Tano and surrounding forests with impunity.
They have encroached on compartments 49 and 121 of the Tano Nimri forest reserve. We gathered a team of investigators to go undercover to make enquiries about the details of this operation.
Our undercover team uncovered a well-oiled machinery of destruction: One Mr. Ayisi (a representative of Akonta Mining) is the liaison on these dealings – he serves as the gatekeeper, negotiating fees and granting illegal access. The concessions are then subleased to individuals like one “Mr. Henry” and another individual identified as “Shark” who are to oversee the devastation of the Aboi Forest Reserve and the Tano River.
As part of the agreement between Akonta Mining and the illegal miners, weekly royalties of 250 grams of gold are to be paid to the company, lining the pockets of Akonta’s collaborators. Another heartbreaking revelation is that this criminal enterprise thrives because of the active collusion and connivance of some forestry officers and some security personnel.
Here is how it works – Part of the GHC 300,000 fee goes to Akonta Mining, a portion goes to Mr. Henry, Shark, and their cohorts, and another portion goes to the forestry and security officials, according to investigators.
These officers take a cut as a service charge in exchange for protection and tip-offs in the event of an impending raid. There is no control over the activities of these illegal miners whatsoever.
They continue to destroy with impunity, knowing that they are operating under the cover of the lease of Akonta Mining Company Ltd Some interviews conducted with a few residents indicate that the modus operandi of Akonta Mining is to use force to enter and destroy even the farmlands and produce of poor farmers in the area.
Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (17th April 2025) an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.
The operation in Compartment 49, which began at 5 a.m. and lasted a whopping 12 hours, resulted in:
• Seizure of about 30 excavators, 5 recovered and impounded at the operation base
• 2 Pump-action guns loaded with 5 and 2 rounds of BB cartridges each, 1 single-barrel gun retrieved
• Confiscation of 2 Toyota Hilux pickups, 1 Toyota RAV4, 4 motorbikes, and a cache of mining equipment All suspects have been transported to Accra, in custody pending prosecution.
In light of the overwhelming evidence, I have authorized the Minerals Commission to take steps to revoke the lease of Akonta Mining Co. Ltd with immediate effect. I have directed that forestry officials connected to these illegalities be immediately interdicted pending further investigations and prosecution. The security agencies have been notified to investigate security officers who have had dealings with Akonta Mining in this particular Forest Reserve.
The Attorney-General has also since been briefed and has taken over the investigations for further action. Akonta Mining does not have a lease to mine in the Tano Nimiri Forest reserve, and their mining activities in the forest are illegal and criminal. And that, the Mahama government will stop at nothing to bring the company to book.
This is a warning to all large-scale mining concession holders hiding behind legal leases to fund the destruction of our forests and river bodies. We know some of your schemes – We are coming after you! To the youth engaged in illegal mining: There is a better way. We stand ready to support you with better alternatives.
But to those who persist in defiance, the state will act without mercy! To the media and the Ghanaian people: Your vigilance is crucial.
Report illegal mining activities, and trust that this government will act. Let me be clear: We will not stop until galamsey is completely uprooted. We will not stop until our waters run blue, we will not stop until our forests are turned greenWe will not stop until the soul of our country is healed! We will not stop until every financier, every enabler — the real architects of this destruction — will face the full rigors of the law.We will name, shame, and prosecute them publicly. Thank you.
Paragliding is a common feature of the Kwahu Easter
Going on adventures is a priority for some people whenever they travel. These risk-takers do not mind spending their money in exchange for unforgettable experiences.
This scenario is no different from the many who flocked Kwahu to enjoy the Easter festivities.
On the Odweanoma Mountain, where the paragliding field is located, both Ghanaians and foreigners visit the site for various reasons.
For those who love to try something new or are adventurous, paragliding is a popular choice, and this year’s cost is GH¢1,350.
This amount is paid by both Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians alike.
In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s Ernestina Serwaa Asante, the Head of Corporate Affairs at the Ghana Tourism Authority, Jones Aruna Nelson, stated that the price is the cheapest in the world.
He explained that the amount charged is equivalent to $85.
Jones Aruna Nelson said, “So, this year we are taking GH¢1,350. It can be equated to $85. Elsewhere in any country, you cannot get it for less than $200. So, this one is very affordable, and that is not the only thing you have to pay.
“When you land at the Nkawkaw Stadium, we give you a souvenir – a cap reading, ‘I Survived 2025 Paragliding,’ along with some water, a drink, and other items. It is all part of the package.”
Before one is cleared to experience paragliding, a health screening is conducted to ensure the person is fit for takeoff.
Additionally, the individual must weigh no more than 100 kilograms.
All gliders undergo mental preparation and are provided with helmets and radio phones so that pilots can communicate with them.
After all these procedures, they take off to enjoy breathtaking views and have unforgettable experiences.

Asante Kotoko has announced the sacking of head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum.
A club statement released on Monday, April 21, 2025, said the “decision was reached following constructive discussions between both parties, with a shared understanding that it is in the best interest of the club at this time.”
Ogum’s sacking follows Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Nations F.C. in the Ghana Premier League.
That defeat was the second in a row for Ogum’s Kotoko, who are also winless in four league matches.
Confidence in Ogum hit an all time low after Sunday’s loss left Kotoko in fourth place with 47 points, six behind league leaders, Bibiani Gold Stars.
Nations F.C’s win on Sunday was their second of the season against the Porcupine Warriors as they completed the double over Kotoko
The current run is the second of its kind for Kotoko this season. From October 27, 2024 to November 11, 2024, Kotoko lost four of five league matches, with the only respite being a 0-0 draw at newly promoted side, Basake Holy Stars.
The run included a defeat to Legon Cities, who were bottom of the league at the time.
Ogum returned to Kotoko in July 2023 for a second stint, guiding Kotoko to a lowly sixth place with 49 points, twelve fewer than eventually champions F.C. Samarttex 1996.
In the second season, Ogum who won the league with Asante Kotoko in 2022, leaves the club after thirteen wins, eight defeats and seven losses.
“We urge our supporters to remain calm and continue to support the club during this transition. Further updates will be communicated in due course,” the club statement concluded.

Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has officially parted ways with Head Coach Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum, the club announced on Saturday afternoon.
The mutual decision follows a series of discussions between the two parties, with both sides agreeing that stepping aside at this juncture serves the best interest of the club.
Dr Ogum, who guided the Porcupine Warriors to the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League title, leaves behind a mixed legacy. His first stint brought an end to Kotoko’s long title drought and was hailed as a major achievement. However, recent performances have cast a shadow over his return, with the team failing to maintain consistency in the ongoing campaign.
A poor run of results, including back-to-back defeats against Accra Lions and Nations FC, intensified speculation around Ogum’s future. Although Kotoko enjoyed a promising start to the season, their momentum has waned in recent weeks, causing them to drop from the top of the table to fourth place.
In 28 league matches this season under Ogum, Kotoko recorded 13 wins, 8 draws, and 7 defeats, scoring 28 goals and conceding 21, with an average of 1.68 points per game.
The club expressed its appreciation to Coach Ogum for his commitment and service, and extended its best wishes for his future endeavors.
Kotoko also called on supporters to stay calm and united as the club enters a new phase, promising to provide updates on the technical direction in due course.
The Porcupine Warriors will next take on Aduana Stars in a crucial Ghana Premier League fixture next weekend.
Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson (L) with Pope Francis
The Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, Most Rev Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, has made a strong case for Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson to become the next leader of the Catholic Church.
According to him, the Ghanaian Cardinal, who is currently the Chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of Sciences and Social Sciences at the Vatican, is of the right age and has the requisite experience to be elected Pope.
He said the Church in Ghana will pray for the Cardinal, adding that his becoming Pope would be a great achievement for the country, 3news.com reports.
“But definitely, our Cardinal is also one of the Cardinals. He is of the right age, he’s had enough experience, and if his brother Cardinals think he is the right person, then they will be ready to support him.
“We will support him with our prayers and definitely it will be a great pat on the shoulders of Ghana if that should happen,” he is quoted as saying.
Most Rev Palmer-Buckle, who is the former Archbishop of Accra, however, indicated that the Holy Spirit will guide the Cardinals in choosing the next Pope.
“Let’s leave it to the Holy Spirit to do its work. When Pope Benedict died, about 1.3 billion Catholics all over the world went into prayer, and therefore, I am sure we are all going to go into prayer.
“We are going to go into prayer and we will allow the Lord to indicate who should be the next Pope,” he added.
The Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, Archbishop Palmer-Buckle’s comments come following the death of Pope Francis on Monday, April 21, 2025.
About Pope Francis’ Death:
A number of global media outlets reported the death of the 88-year-old Pope early on Monday.
The Vatican Camerlengo, who is tasked with confirming the Pope’s death, has confirmed his passing.
“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church,” Farrell, the Vatican Camerlengo, is quoted as saying by apnews.com.

The ongoing joint police and security operation targeting illegal mining activities in forest reserves near Samreboi in the Western Region has led to the arrest of 21 more individuals, bringing the total number of arrests to 47 as the crackdown enters its fourth day.
The latest arrests include a mix of local and foreign nationals: 39 Ghanaians, eight Chinese nationals, and four Ghanaian women. Authorities say the suspects were caught engaging in illegal mining activities along the Tano River and within adjoining forest reserves that have come under increasing threat from galamsey operations.
The operation, which has intensified in recent days, has also led to the seizure of 17 excavators and one bulldozer suspected of having been used in the destruction of the environment. Security officials confirmed the confiscation of several firearms and rounds of ammunition from the illegal miners.
The first batch of 26 arrested suspects has already been transported to Accra to face prosecution.
Security personnel remain deployed across the affected areas as the raid continues with the aim of flushing out remaining illegal miners and dismantling galamsey infrastructure.
Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum has been sacked as Kotoko manager
Asante Kotoko have officially parted ways with head coach, Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum, according to a statement released by the club.
According to the club, the decision was made by mutual agreement following discussions between both parties.
“Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has, this afternoon, parted company with Head Coach Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum.
“This decision was reached following constructive discussions between both parties, with a shared understanding that it is in the best interest of the club at this time,” the statement read.
The manager’s dismissal comes in the wake of the team’s 2-0 loss to Nations FC on Sunday, April 20, 2025.
The former WAFA gaffer exits two seasons after returning for a second stint with the Porcupine Warriors. His departure marks the end of a turbulent campaign that has seen the club fall from title contention.
Kotoko, who led the table at some point, have now slipped to fourth place on the table, having managed only two wins in their last nine games.
During this stretch, they have drawn five and lost two, with both defeats coming back-to-back, with the first being a 3-0 loss to struggling Accra Lions, followed by the recent 2-0 defeat to Nations FC.
The team’s sharp dip in form appears to have been a key factor in the decision to part ways with Ogum, as their ambition to secure the league title has grown increasingly uncertain.
Currently, Asante Kotoko sit on 47 points, trailing league leaders Bibiani Gold Stars by six points with six matches remaining in the season.
Despite their inconsistency in the league, the club remains in the hunt for silverware, with a place in the semi-finals of the MTN FA Cup keeping hopes of a domestic double alive.

As the world grapples with economic uncertainty, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG) are set to convene for their highly anticipated Spring Meetings in 2025.
The meetings will take place from April 21-26, in Washington, D.C., on the theme: “Jobs – The Path to Prosperity,” aimed at exploring international cooperation on the future of job creation.
This comes as the two Bretton Woods institutions estimate that about 1.2 billion young people in emerging economies, reaching working age over the next decade, would only have access to some 420 million jobs.
The gathering of global leaders, finance ministers and central bank governors, policymakers, and experts would focus on exploring solutions to the recent trade tariff tensions and shape the future of international cooperation.
It would also serve as a platform for a call to action for global leaders to work together to address pressing economic challenges to build a more prosperous and sustainable future for all.
Ahead of the meetings, Mr Ajay Banga, President, WBG, has said the workforce and expected jobs disparity was a global risk, noting that without opportunity, the forces of fragility, illegal migration, and instability could grow stronger.
He challenged developing countries to provide the right systems for the private sector to bring its financing to play, enabling infrastructure and regulatory frameworks for jobs generation.
Mr Banga said the Bank would expand its Private Sector Investment Lab to include the most critical sectors to job creation – energy and infrastructure, agribusiness, healthcare, tourism, and manufacturing.
He reaffirmed their commitment towards creating meaningful and sustainable employment opportunities, adding that: “The idea is to build a Bank that delivers what is demanded – jobs – because jobs are the best way to drive a nail in the coffin of poverty.”
On the global trade tariff tensions, he noted that they were engaging in constructive dialogue with the US administration, despite uncertainty, saying: “They’re asking the right questions, and we’re trying to give them the right answers.”
The World Bank Chief called for more efficient border processes, reduced trade costs, clearer rules of origin, and decreased friction to boost trade volumes to provide a more stable and diversified growth in developing economies.
Ms Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director, IMF, observed that the resilience observed about six months ago was being tested again by the reboot of the global trading system.
She gave three consequences of the trade tensions: costly uncertainty, negative impact on economic growth in the short term, and erosion of productivity over the long run, especially in smaller economies through protectionism.
That required a restart of global trends towards low tariff rates while reducing non-tariff barriers and distortions, in “ensuring that there can be cooperation in a multipolar world,” Ms Georgieva said.
She expressed confidence in the spring meetings, serving as “a vital forum for dialogue at a vital time.”
“All countries, large and small alike, can – and should -play their part to strengthen the global economy in an era of more frequent and severe shocks.”
The IMF Chief noted that when pushed “hard enough, things that were not possible become possible, mountains that couldn’t be climbed are climbed, vested interests that would not retreat are overcome.”
She called for cool heads, clear vision, and strong will, adding that: “We need a more resilient world economy, not a drift to division. And, to facilitate the transition, policies must allow private economic agents time to adjust and deliver.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has paid a heartfelt tribute to Pope Francis, following the death of the pontiff, with great sadness and a retrospective look at the particular affinity between the late Holy Father and the sport of football.
“I was very saddened to hear about the passing of Pope Francis,” Infantino began by writing on his official Instagram page.
“I had the good fortune to meet him on two occasions, and he would always talk about his love of football and how important a role it plays in society, and particularly the manner in which it educates and safeguards children all around the globe.”
Pope Francis, a lifelong football fan and supporter of Argentine club San Lorenzo, regularly spoke out on the power of sport to bring people together, inspire, and educate.
Infantino referred to one such occasion, quoting the Pope’s simple but forceful words: “Football is the most beautiful sport in the world.”
Earlier this year, at the World Leaders Summit on Children’s Rights at the Vatican, Pope Francis once again touted the game’s global popularity, pointing to its ability to bring about positive change and bring people together across cultural and national divides.
Infantino also recognised the Pope’s unwavering commitment to peace and harmony, values which he lived even in his last public address on Easter Sunday.
“He led by example,” the FIFA President underlined.
“My deepest condolences are with all those who knew him, his community, family, and friends. All the prayers of the whole football world are with him. May he rest in peace.”
While the world says goodbye to a spiritual icon, the world of football joins together to celebrate a man who, in the sport of football, did not see just sport, but a means of humanity, compassion, and hope.

Acting Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea
The Acting Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has called for an integration of all divisions of the Service to enhance its operations and progress.
According to him, the lack of integration of the divisions of the GHS to enable them to work in close collaboration over the past years had slowed its progress.
He said that the integration of the various divisions of the GHS to enhance its operations and progress could be achieved through collective collaboration and the inclusion of staff participation.
Prof. Akoriyea made the call at the annual performance review of the GHS held at the Health Promotion Division in Accra on April 16.
The purpose of the performance review was to assess the performance of the GHS last year to identify the progress that was made, the challenges faced, and also propose solutions to the challenges.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Akoriyea said the situation where some of the divisions were under-resourced as compared to others was not encouraging.
He, therefore, urged the Director of the Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation division to ensure that resources were allocated for the benefit of all the workers of the various divisions and ensure their integration.
Furthermore, Prof. Akoriyea charged the directors of the various divisions to promote inclusive participation of workers and also ensure that they deliver services effectively.
“My attention has been drawn to the fact that some of you, the directors, deputy directors and programme managers of the various divisions often ignore the GHS staff who have been employed to work with you and rather give the job to volunteers,” he stated.
“I am also well informed that there are drivers who have never gone on a trek, while there are other drivers who are always on a trek. That is not a good thing, and we need to change. We need to do things where every GHS worker participates actively to enhance its operations and progress,” Prof. Akoriyea added.
The Ag Director General also promised to ensure the equal allocation of resources to the various divisions, especially the research and development division, in order to enhance their research work.
Moreover, he said that the research centres across the country, the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Navrongo University would now be affiliated to the GHS to enable staff who conduct research to become associate professors and not consultants.
Prof. Akoriyea promised to oversee the rebounding of the GHS and prioritise the welfare of staff of the Service.
There were presentations by the directors of the various divisions of the GHS during the review to assess their performance last year.
Some of the divisions that were present at the performance review were the Health Promotion Division, the Human Resource Division, the Institutional Care Division, Family Health Division, Research and Development Division, Public Health Division, Policy, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Division and the Office of the Director General of the GHS.

The streets were filled with people from all walks of life
It was a typical moment of joy and excitement in the Eastern Region, particularly at Kwahu Obomeng and its surrounding areas.
On the night of Sunday, April 20, people from all walks of life gathered on the streets to celebrate the Easter festivities.
Roads were crowded with both vehicles and pedestrians, as music and dancing filled the atmosphere. Traders lined the streets, offering a wide variety of goods and services.
As usual, GhanaWeb was present with our cameras, capturing these lively and unforgettable moments from both local residents and visitors from outside the region.
A food vendor who spoke to our reporter lamented the slowdown in business this year. According to her, sales during this period in previous years were good, but that has not been the case this time.
She further said she paid over two thousand Ghana Cedis to secure her selling space, yet business has remained slow.
“This year, business has been slow, and we’ve incurred significant costs. The turnout for Kwahu has been lower than expected, leaving many of our food items unsold. People simply aren’t buying, and we’ve suffered major losses.
“Despite everything, we remain grateful to God. The expenses have been overwhelming — I paid GH¢2,500 for three days, including logistics. Yet, we are struggling to even make GH¢2,000 per day, which clearly shows that things are not going well,” she said.
Apart from that, many people captured on camera were visibly excited, with most of them expressing their joy at being part of the Kwahu experience once again.
GhanaWeb also documented vibrant street scenes, where crowds jammed to music playing in the background.
Some individuals were also seen enjoying video games, while others seized the moment to engage in trading and sales.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has outlined a series of solemn activities to honour the memory of His Holiness Pope Francis, who died peacefully earlier on Monday, April 21, 2025.
The Vatican announced the death of Pope Francis after he had battled a series of illnesses. However, he had been discharged from the hospital and even celebrated Mass on Easter Sunday, April 20 — just a day before his passing.
In an statement signed by Most Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Catholic Bishop of Sunyani and President of the GCBC, the Church in Ghana has called on all clergy, consecrated persons, and lay faithful to unite in prayer and remembrance for the late Pontiff.
These activities will include: A National Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date to be determined. All bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful who are able to attend will be warmly invited to participate in this solemn liturgy.
“All archdioceses, dioceses, and parishes are encouraged to organize local Requiem Masses and special Holy Hours in honour of Pope Francis. These should be moments of prayerful reflection on his teachings and witness.
“Schools, seminaries, and other Catholic institutions may wish to host prayer services, talks, or discussions to help the faithful, especially the young, to appreciate the life and legacy of Pope Francis,” part of the statement read.
The GCBC also called on all members of the Church to pray not only for the repose of Pope Francis’ soul, but also for the global Church as it prepares to elect his successor.
“May the Lord, whom he served so faithfully and joyfully, welcome him into the eternal joy of His heavenly kingdom,” the statement concluded.
Pope Francis served as the 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, leaving behind a legacy marked by simplicity, dialogue, and a deep concern for the marginalized.
Presidential Aide and Senior Presidential Advisor to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has emphasised the need to revitalise the agricultural sector by making it more appealing and engaging for young people.
Speaking during an interview with Woezor TV on Sunday, 20 April, she highlighted the importance of youth involvement in agriculture as a means of securing sustainable livelihoods and national development.
According to Madam Bawah Mogtari, the transformation of agriculture into a more attractive sector is crucial to changing perceptions among the youth.
“All we want to do is to make agriculture sexier and more engaging for the youth to be able to build something for themselves,” she said.
She noted that the current government’s approach under John Mahama would place special focus on empowering young people to take advantage of opportunities within the agricultural value chain.
She explained that agriculture holds vast potential for job creation and wealth generation, especially if it is modernised and supported with the right policies.
“We believe the youth must see agriculture not as a last resort, but as a smart, innovative, and rewarding career path,” she added.
This, she argued, requires not only investment in tools and training but also a shift in mindset and national priorities.
Joyce Bawah Mogtari further indicated that under a future Mahama administration, there would be greater emphasis on youth-led agribusiness initiatives, access to credit, and improved market access.
She concluded by urging young people to embrace the new vision for agriculture and assured them of the former president’s commitment to driving policies that will place youth at the centre of Ghana’s development.

Founder of Reign House Chapel International, Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche
Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche, Founder of Reign House Chapel International, has become the center of discussion online after a video of him prophesying the death of the Head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, re-emerged
In the video circulating on social media, Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche was heard speaking on December 31, 2024, that the health of Pope Francis was at stake.
He explained that the late Pope Francis might pass on if care was not taken.
“Let’s pray for Pope Francis this year. We were all born as Roman Catholic so let’s pray for him because death is looking for him,” he said.
Pope Francis was announced dead on April 21, 2025, after battling critical sickness recently.
The Head of the Catholic Church died at the age of 88, the Vatican said.
According to the BBC, which described the late Pope as ‘A voice for peace with a contagious smile,’ tributes from across the world have been pouring in for the late Pope Francis.
The 88-year-old pontiff spent five weeks in hospital with pneumonia in February and March. According to his medical team, the pope came close to death during the illness.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church.
Renowned US-based Ghanaian lawyer and scholar, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare (Kwaku Azar)
Renowned US-based Ghanaian lawyer and scholar, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, one of three persons who have filed a petition for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, has sounded a strong caution on the dangers of having the wrong person heading the judicial arm of government.
In a write-up shared on social media on April 19, 2025, he said that the citizenry often pay attention to the ills of the heads of the legislative and executive arms of government while ignoring those of the judiciary.
He pointed out that having the wrong person as Chief Justice is as detrimental as having the wrong person as the president or the Speaker of Parliament.
“Judicial independence has both institutional and decisional dimensions: the former safeguards the judiciary’s autonomy from other branches of government, while the latter ensures that individual judges can decide cases free from interference—including from within the judiciary itself.
“Much public discourse on judicial independence rightly focuses on the dangers of executive overreach—presidents who dismiss judges, appoint loyalists, or undermine the courts. These are real and present threats, rooted in our painful constitutional history,” he wrote.
The academic added, “Yet an equally corrosive, and often overlooked, danger comes from within: the overreach of a rogue Chief Justice.”
He went on to present a list of what he believes are some of the dangers of having a “rogue Chief Justice” as follows:
1. Subverting the Judicial Appointments Process:
A CJ who bypasses the constitutional framework and engages in private negotiations with the President to elevate their preferred candidates to the Supreme Court violates the principle of separation of powers.
Such conduct creates a dangerous quid pro quo that invites executive intrusion into judicial affairs. It also sends a chilling message to other judges: loyalty to the CJ, not merit, determines advancement. This demoralises the bench, undermines judicial esprit de corps, and sidelines experienced and competent judges, breeding resentment and disillusionment.
2. Manipulating Panel Composition:
The power to constitute panels must be exercised transparently and impartially. A CJ who routinely assembles “go-to” panels comprising favoured appointees can effectively predetermine case outcomes. Worse still, reshuffling panels or interfering after a case has been heard constitutes an egregious abuse of discretion that directly threatens the fairness of judicial proceedings.
3. Issuing Unconstitutional Directives:
The Constitution provides a clear framework for the enactment of judicial rules and procedures. A CJ who disregards this framework and issues directives unilaterally erodes the rule of law from within the very institution sworn to uphold it.
4. Punitive Transfers and Case Reassignments:
The strategic transfer of judges or reassignment of cases as a form of retribution for perceived disloyalty is a subtle but powerful way to chill judicial independence. Judges must not fear professional consequences for rendering decisions grounded in law and conscience.
5. Suppressing Dissent and Debate:
A judiciary thrives on open deliberation and diverse viewpoints. When a CJ cultivates a culture of fear, stifles criticism, or silences dissenting voices within the judiciary, the institution becomes less a temple of justice and more a court of orthodoxy.
6. Undermining Collegial Governance:
A Chief Justice who centralises authority, sidelines judicial councils, or weakens peer review mechanisms corrodes the system of internal checks and balances designed to prevent abuses of judicial leadership.

The national U-19 and U-17 Women’s Handball Teams have commenced their participation in the 2025 IHF Challenge Trophy, Africa Zone III tournament, which began today, April 20, and runs through April 24 in Abidjan.
Ghana’s quest for gold in the U-19 category got off to a promising start with a 23-16 victory over the Central African Republic, under the lights at the Palais des Sports Treichville.
Despite a shaky beginning, conceding three goals before scoring their first in the fifth minute, Ghana rallied to level the score at 8-8 by halftime.
In the second half, the team displayed a more cohesive performance, tightening their defensive shape around the 9-meter line and enhancing their offensive approach through the centre.
Mary Akaasa, Josephine Mensah, and Edna Benyingi led a second-half onslaught on the CAR side, netting several goals within 10 minutes.
As the game neared its conclusion, Ghana shifted to a more defensive strategy to preserve their lead, ultimately securing a 23-16 victory.
Mary Akaasa was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match for her outstanding contribution.
Head coach Raphael Sifah acknowledged the team’s improved overall performance but emphasised the need to sharpen their focus in the opening minutes of games.
“There is more room for improvement, so we will work on our shortcomings from the first game and refine our strategies moving forward,” he noted.
Earlier in the day, the U-17 team suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of their Burkina Faso counterparts.
Trailing 15-21 at halftime, Ghana was unable to mount a comeback in the second half and eventually fell 41-27.
Coach Sifah expressed confidence in his team’s potential to rebound.
“This is a developmental tournament, and I believe that with time, the players will adapt and improve,” he remarked.
The U-19 team will next face Burkina Faso on Monday at 18:00 GMT, while the U-17 side will take on Togo earlier that day at noon.
Ghana’s Former Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his profound sorrow following the passing of Pope Francis, who was declared dead on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Dr. Bawumia paid tribute to Pope Francis for his unwavering commitment to peace and compassion, which significantly contributed to global harmony.
“It is with deep grief that I learned of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. The late Pope was a man of steadfast peace and compassion. He lived a life of inclusiveness and humility, admired by many around the world,” the post read.
Dr. Bawumia reflected on his visit with Pope Francis last year, stating, “When I visited him a year ago, he left a remarkable impression on me as someone whose true essence and outlook on life was to live purely and rightly.”
“I join the Catholic community in Ghana and worldwide in mourning this tremendous loss. Please accept my most sincere condolences. May his legacy inspire us as we continue to pursue our individual mandates on earth,” he added.
Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 in his residence at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
A grandson of the popular musician, late Comfort Omoge, Prince Ogo Omoge, has been attacked and killed by a scavenger in Okitipupa, the headquarters of Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
It was gathered that the deceased was attacked by the scavenger with a dagger during an undisclosed matter, which led to an argument and confrontation between them.
A source disclosed that the scavenger, who attacked the late Prince along the Ayeka/Igodan-Igbokoda expressway in Okitipupa, slit the deceased’s throat with a dagger, leaving him to bleed to death.
He stated, “The argument escalated into a violent confrontation and the assailant brought out a dagger and cut the throat of the deceased.
“There was a minor disagreement between Prince Omoge and the scavenger. What started as a small issue quickly spiraled out of control.
“He was brutally killed, and the attacker fled the scene immediately afterward. The victim was rushed to the hospital but was sadly pronounced dead by medical personnel.”
The development caused tension in the community, prompting residents and community leaders to organise a search party to fish out the suspect.
Speaking on the gruesome killing of Prince Omoge, the Chairman of the council, Andrew Ogunsakin, said a coordinated effort between residents in the area and security agencies led to the arrest of a suspect, identified as Machido Abubakar.
Ogunsakin, who commended the quick response of the security operatives who were able to locate, arrest, and detain the suspect within hours of the incident, said his administration is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
Ogunsakin, who called for calm, urged residents of the communities within the local government to remain law-abiding. He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and promised them support in their pursuit of justice.
The council chairman also met with local leaders, including representatives from the Hausa/Fulani community, traditional rulers, and youth groups, to foster a commitment to peace among residents.
Confirming the development, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ayanlade Olayinka, said the suspect has been arrested and is in police custody.
Ayanlade said, “Yes, I can confirm the incident. One suspect has been arrested and is currently being held in custody.”
In a significant step towards restoring peace in the Kusaug Traditional Area, the youth of Kusasi and the Ghana Police Service have reconciled following recent violent encounters.
The Zug-ran of Kusaug, Bawku Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, intervened and directed both sides to pursue dialogue and reconciliation, leading to a successful peace process facilitated by the Kusaug Advisory Council.
Kumasi, April 21, GNA – In 1984, Reverend Ransford Obeng, inspired by divine calling, embarked on a life-changing mission that would lead to the establishment of the Calvary Charismatic Center (CCC) in Kumasi, Ghana.
His journey began with a transformative experience at the prestigious Haggai Institute Leadership Training in Singapore.
While there, he visited the Calvary Charismatic Center, now known as Victory Family Center and led by the late Pastor Rick Seaward.
This encounter stirred a deep spiritual conviction within him, inspiring a vision to replicate that vibrant faith community upon his return to Ghana.
On Easter Sunday, April 7, 1985, after sharing his vision with his late wife, Mrs. Joyce Obeng, and spending time in prayer and reflection, CCC was born. Its inaugural service was held at the Ministries Canteen, now the Ashanti Regional Office of the Civil and Local Government Servants Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) in Adum-Kumasi.
Reverend Ransford Obeng
Determined to revolutionise the Charismatic Church experience in Ghana, Reverend Obeng, affectionately known as “Brother Ransford,” committed himself to sound biblical teaching and to equipping Christians to fulfill the Great Commission.
Known for his practical approach to Christian living and his distinct style, including his bushy hair and signature Tomos motorbike – he quickly became a beloved and iconic figure in the faith community.
The CCC continued to grow steadily, necessitating several relocations. From the Workers Canteen in 1987, the church moved to ‘The Upper Room’ in Adum, and eventually settled in a larger auditorium in Sepe Buokrom in the Manhyia community, in November 1990.
For four decades, CCC has remained steadfast in its mission to train individuals to find joy in making disciples. The church emphasises missionary work and community engagement, striving to influence society through godly living, biblical teachings, and service while building a culture rooted in faith, service, and community development.
The CCC is widely recognised for its impactful outreach programmes, especially its strategic ‘Outdoor Evangelism.’
These initiatives begin with community surveys, followed by targeted evangelism efforts tailored to the unique needs of each area.
The Church operates under a structured governance model with a Board of Governors and Elders, and promotes modest, decent dressing as part of its culture.
Over the years, CCC has effectively harnessed the talents of its members, creating numerous ministries to serve a wide range of needs. These include Health, Legal Services, Missionary Work, Family Life, Counseling, Evangelism, Media and Productions, Protocol, Security, Sound and Logistics, Outdoor Publicity, Children’s Ministry, Youth and Young Adult programs, Transportation, and Cleaning Services.
One of CCC’s standout initiatives is the School for Christian Development (SCD). Here, members are grouped into smaller communities of 20 to 25 individuals for focused Bible study, fostering spiritual growth and fellowship.
From its modest beginnings, CCC has blossomed into a global movement, planting over 600 churches across Ghana and beyond.
Reflecting on this 40-year milestone, Reverend Ransford Obeng, General Overseer of CCC says, “For 40 years, CCC stands as a testament to God’s faithfulness – a legacy of faith that has impacted nations and a beacon of hope for many seeking the light of Christ.”
As he looks to the future, Reverend Obeng reaffirms that CCC is more than a church – it is a living legacy, continuing to fulfill the Great Commission and transform lives and communities through the power of the Gospel.
The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, will be leading the country’s delegation to the 2025 International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Spring Meetings.
This is the first such participation under the new National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration led by President John Dramani Mahama.
The meetings come just one week after Ghana secured a staff-level agreement with the IMF on the fourth review of its IMF-supported programme.
This agreement is expected to lead to the release of approximately $370 million in support of Ghana’s economic recovery agenda.
What makes the deal particularly noteworthy is that it was reached even though several structural benchmarks and quantitative targets under the programme had been missed before the new administration took office.
The agreement reflects renewed international confidence in Ghana’s direction, largely driven by the swift and targeted actions taken by the new government.
The Mahama-led administration has worked tirelessly to reverse the country’s fiscal challenges.
In many cases, it has fast-tracked the implementation of key structural reforms while introducing additional corrective measures aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and credibility.
One of the most urgent issues addressed has been the large buildup of payables in 2024, which created a significant primary deficit—far exceeding the modest surplus that had been programmed.
The government has responded with a bold and pragmatic reform package to curb arrears, reinforce spending discipline, and strengthen Ghana’s public financial management system.
Key measures implemented include: • Commissioning a comprehensive audit of outstanding payables and commitments, to verify their legitimacy and recommend corrective actions. This audit is expected to be completed within eight weeks.
• Amending the Procurement Act to make the Finance Minister’s commitment authorisation a requirement before any central government procurement can proceed.
• Reforming the PFM Act to establish a binding debt rule targeting a 45% debt-to-GDP ratio by 2035, and a fiscal rule requiring an annual primary surplus of at least 1.5% of GDP. The reform also provides for the establishment of an Independent Fiscal Council.
• Operationalising a Compliance Desk at the Ministry of Finance to monitor how MDAs are adhering to fiscal rules.
• Launching a PFM Commitment Control Compliance League Table that will rank MDAs based on their level of compliance with spending controls and financial discipline.
In addition to these, the government has completed several structural reforms that were originally scheduled for completion by the end of December 2024 and March 2025—demonstrating its determination to stay ahead of schedule in resetting the economy.
Strategic Engagements in Washington
Throughout the week, Dr. Forson and the Ghanaian delegation are scheduled to participate in a series of high-level meetings and discussions. These include engagements with global leaders focused on key areas such as job creation, energy access, food security, and climate resilience.
A major highlight of the week will be a meeting between Dr. Forson and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, where Ghana’s progress, challenges, and reform agenda will be discussed in detail. Additional engagements are also planned with members of the Paris Club, rating agencies, the U.S. Treasury, and other development partners, all aimed at deepening collaboration and strengthening investor confidence.
Ghana’s Reset Story
In all his engagements, Dr. Forson is expected to tell what he calls “Ghana’s reset story”—a vision grounded in restoring and sustaining macroeconomic stability, ensuring debt sustainability, and laying the foundation for stronger and more inclusive growth.
This reset includes protecting the poor and vulnerable, building resilience through ambitious structural reforms, and steering the country toward the broader goal of achieving “The Ghana We Want.”
Accra, April 21, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday paid a courtesy visit on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on the Kwahu Mountains during the just ended Easter festivities.
The President spent the last three days on the Kwahu Mountains participating in the Kwahu Business Forum, which took place at the Mpraeso Social Centre in the Kwahu South District of the Eastern Region.
Tadzewu (V/R), April 21, GNA – Police personnel on duty at the Tadzewu-Metsrikasa Barrier in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region have intercepted a massive consignment of ammunition on a passenger bus traveling from Accra to Benin.
The arrest occurred in the early hours of Friday, April 18, 202, at approximately 0330 hours, during a routine inspection of a Hyundai passenger bus, with registration number GR 8246-Q.
A search of the vehicle revealed 60 cartons of AAA cartridges, amounting to 15,000 pieces of the AAA cartridge, and 72 cartons of BB cartridges, totaling 18,000 pieces of the BB cartridge ammunition. The boxes had been concealed under luggage and wrapped in sacks to avoid detection.
This was contained in an official statement issued by the Volta Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, signed by DSP Felix Danku, and dated April 19, 2025.
According to the release, the driver of the vehicle, Abasou Fousseni, aged 45, and his co-driver, Salisu Jalilu, aged 38, were immediately arrested for questioning.
Both men, however, denied knowledge of the concealed ammunition.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that the co-driver, Salisu Jalilu, was responsible for loading the illicit items into the vehicle,” the statement said.
In light of this development, the driver was granted bail to allow him to continue the journey and ensure the safe arrival of the passengers at their destination.
The co-driver remains in custody to assist with ongoing investigations.
He is expected to be arraigned before court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
The statement reiterated the Ghana Police Service’s firm commitment to combating transnational crimes, especially those that threaten peace and security within the ECOWAS sub-region.
Investigations are ongoing to identify the source and intended recipients of the ammunition.
