‘I’m suffering because of the NDC song’

Ghanaian gospel musician Evangelist Akwasi Nyarko has appealed to former President John Dramani Mahama, his wife Lordina Mahama, and the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to come to his aid.

In a video shared on social media, the gospel singer revealed that he is struggling to survive after composing a campaign song for the NDC.

According to him, since releasing the song titled Sankofa, he has been rejected by many people in the Ashanti Region.

Evangelist Nyarko explained that he hardly receives invitations to perform anymore, especially in his home region, due to the political affiliation. He believes his open support for the NDC has caused many people to turn their backs on him.

“I’m suffering because of the campaign song I made for the NDC. People in the Ashanti Region have stopped inviting me to perform or attend events. It’s as if the song was made for an evil person. People here don’t like it when you openly support the NDC,” he said.

Looking emotional in the video, the gospel singer revealed that he and his family are going through difficult times. He said he has children to care for, but due to the lack of performance opportunities, he is facing financial hardship.

“I have kids, and we are hungry,” he stated.

Evangelist Nyarko then made a heartfelt plea to the former president, the First Lady, and the NDC leadership to support him.

“I beg President Mahama, First Lady Lordina Mahama, and the NDC executives, please remember me. I need help to take care of myself and my children,” he appealed.

The Member of Parliament for Effia, Isaac Boamah Nyarko, has called on supporters of the various New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopefuls to remain decorous and respectful in their campaigns as the party prepares for its upcoming parliamentary primaries.

Nyarko emphasised the importance of maintaining a peaceful and respectful atmosphere during the electoral process.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday, June 19, 2025 the MP stressed that unity and discipline within the party are essential as it prepares for internal elections.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com dated June 19, 2025, Nyarko’s plea comes in anticipation of the NPP’s primaries, where candidates will compete for the party’s nomination.

He urged supporters to focus on highlighting the strengths and visions of their preferred candidates rather than engaging in personal attacks on opponents, emphasising that the ultimate goal is to win the trust and support of the broader Ghanaian electorate.

The MP’s call for decorum is seen as a move to promote a positive and issue-based campaign, rather than one marred by negativity.

“It is about the people. Let the message resonate with them. Convince them you are the best person to lead. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how many people are voting, 200,000 or more. In the last election, millions voted. We are just a small fraction making a decision,” he explained.

As the primaries approach, the NPP’s internal dynamics will be closely watched.

“The bigger picture is the people, the Ghanaian electorate. It’s important that we raise the standard and the bar beyond our small groups, whether five people here or seven there. Go wherever you choose to campaign, but let us be decorous in our language and sell our candidates respectfully,” he added.

Fati and Lamine Yamal have faced backlash following their vacation trip Fati and Lamine Yamal have faced backlash following their vacation trip

Spanish influencer and OnlyFans model, Fati Vazquez, has revealed that she has been receiving death threats after she was spotted on vacation with 17-year-old Barcelona star, Lamine Yamal.

The Barcelona player splashed photos of their experience on social media, showing him on a boat against a rocky background, while Fati also shared similar images on her Instagram later.

Unfortunately, the experience has attracted threats and insults from unknown persons after pictures of their escapade made its way online.

Fati lamented that her life has been threatened by some unknown persons she believes are offended by the pictures.

“It’s sad to see people who have such darkness inside them to the extent that they wish death on someone they don’t even know. What others project speaks more about them than me.

“I choose to live with the purpose of continuing to grow and surround myself with light. To those who wish me ill, I wish them healing, because nobody who is well in themselves wishes the destruction of another,” a report by The Sun on June 17, 2025 quoted her.

She further noted that their attacks could have far reaching implications on the Barcelona superstar.

“First, I’m 29, I haven’t made it to 30 yet. I haven’t done anything, haven’t hurt anyone. The reactions are just too harsh, and it’s even affecting him [Yamal].

“I just spent a few days with him, which is obviously what you see on the cover, and that’s it. I wouldn’t like to say more because the insults are too much,” she added.

Justice Ackaah-Boafo, Afenyo-Markin, Ahiafor ‘stuggle’ with reciting national pledge

0

There were lighthearted moments during the vetting of Supreme Court Judge nominee, Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, on Friday, June 20, when an attempt to recite the national pledge turned into a friendly struggle involving members of Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

The moment was triggered when Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, asked the nominee to recite the national pledge, following his call for Ghanaians to embrace patriotism in a remark during his vetting.

Caught off guard, Justice Ackaah-Boafo responded, “Mr. Chair, I am not sure I am able to recite it,” drawing laughter from the committee.

Chairman of the Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, immediately stepped in to defend the nominee’s honesty. “The nominee is honest to say that ‘I will not be able to recite it,’ so why will you insist? An honest answer has been given,” he said.

Unrelenting, Afenyo-Markin clarified, “I did not say that in spite of the fact that you said you cannot recite it in full, you should still recite it. I only said share with us those aspects that immediately come to mind.”

Justice Ackaah-Boafo then managed to recall only the first line of the pledge. Sensing his difficulty, Afenyo-Markin took it upon himself to recite the pledge line by line for the nominee to repeat — but even that didn’t go without its own challenge.

Chairman Ahiafor, observing the Minority Leader’s slight fumbles, teased, “But you are struggling too.”

To which Afenyo-Markin playfully responded, “If I am struggling, at least I have made an attempt.”

Ahiafor fired back in jest, “That is why I haven’t made any attempt — because I don’t want to struggle.”

The exchange drew laughter across the room, offering a rare moment of levity during what is typically a formal and serious exercise.

We need strong party to produce president

0

Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has called for discipline, reorganisation, and unity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the party prepares for its presidential primaries and subsequently the 2028 general election.

In a post on X formerly Twitter on Thursday evening, June 20, the lawmaker emphasised the need for a stronger, more cohesive party structure if the NPP is to reclaim power in the next general elections.

“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) needs a strong party, well organised and disciplined to produce a President, not just a Flagbearer,” he said.

Boamah’s comments come at a time when the party is still reeling from its defeat in the 2024 general elections. Several party members and political observers have since called for deep reflection and restructuring ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The NPP is gearing up for a heated presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026, with multiple high-profile contenders expected to contest. Among them are Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Agric Minister, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and outspoken former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.

Meanwhile, Kwasi Kwarteng, a former spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, has suggested that Patrick Boamah may be interested in joining the flagbearer race, although the MP is yet to make a formal declaration.

China reaffirms one-China principle, commends Ghana’s historic support

0

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, has strongly reiterated China’s position on the Taiwan issue, calling it a matter of historical truth and international consensus.

At a media briefing held at his residence on Thursday, the ambassador described the one-China principle as “the political foundation for China’s relations with all countries,” adding that China will continue to oppose all forms of “Taiwan independence.”

He traced the historical and legal basis for China’s claim to Taiwan, referencing the Cairo Declaration, Potsdam Proclamation, and the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, which in 1971 recognised the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate representative of China in the United Nations.

“The authority of Resolution 2758 cannot be challenged,” the ambassador stated. “It affirms that Taiwan is part of China and has no seat in the UN.”

Ambassador Tong also commended Ghana’s consistent support for the one-China principle over the decades.

He cited Ghana’s vote in favour of Resolution 2758 and the role of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, then Deputy Foreign Minister, as a critical moment in diplomatic history.

“Ghana’s principled vote helped shape the international order. It was a symbol of trust, solidarity, and true friendship,” he noted.

The ambassador acknowledged that even during strained diplomatic periods, such as after Ghana’s 1966 coup, the country refrained from engaging with Taiwan.

“This loyalty laid the political foundation for the resumption of diplomatic ties in 1972,” he said.

He further praised both the NDC and NPP for their continued public support for China’s territorial integrity, calling it a bipartisan endorsement of shared values.

The event formed part of the Chinese Embassy’s quarterly engagement with media and policy institutions, aimed at deepening understanding of China-Ghana and China-Africa relations.

“We see Ghana not just as a partner, but as a long-time friend,” the ambassador said. He stressed that open dialogue and mutual respect remain central to the China-Ghana relationship, which continues to grow across sectors including trade, infrastructure, and culture.

Parliament urges MMDCEs, MPs to work together

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah

Accra, June 20, GNA–Mr. Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Head of Government Business in Parliament, has entreated newly appointed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) to work collaboratively to avert conflicts that often ensued between them.

Commenting on whether government has credited the Assemblies’ accounts with the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), Mr. Ayariga said the Ministry of Finance had already transmitted the DACF to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) and believed that the funds had hit the Assemblies’ accounts.

He said after the MMDCEs had completed their orientation in Accra on Friday, June 20, 2025, and adequately briefed about the guidelines for using the funds, they would judiciously use the funds for the intended development purposes in their respective jurisdictions.

The Majority Leader, also the MP for Bawku Central, made remarks on the floor of Parliament, in Accra, on Friday.

Responding to the continuous presence of the ministers in the chamber, Mr. Ayariga said due to the change of sitting time of the House from 1000 hours to 1400 hours, it enabled the Ministers to be at their post at the Ministry in the morning and attend to parliamentary sitting in the afternoon.

On why government suspended the implementation of the Energy Sector Levy, Mr. Ayariga said government was monitoring the global petroleum prices due to the ongoing Israeli/Iranian war, which has the potential of escalating the world prices of the commodity.

The legislator believed that when the raging conflict between the two middle east nations calmed down, the levy would be rolled out in due course.

Responding to the inability of the House to constitute the membership of the ECOWAS and Pan African Parliament, the legislator urged both Whips of the House to work together to select members to form it.

The Majority Leader, also the Chairman of the Business Committee of Parliament, presented the business statement for the fifth week, ending on Friday, June 27, 2025.

He said 58 questions would be asked during the week, comprising 19 urgent and 39 oral questions.

Ministers of State, he said, would make various policy statements on the floor of the House.

Lakers Set For Record-Breaking $10 Billion Sale To Mark Walter

0

THE LOS ANGELES Lakers are on the verge of being sold in what is expected to become the most expensive sale of a U.S. sports team in history. A source familiar with the deal says the Buss family, majority owners of the iconic NBA franchise since 1979, has agreed to sell its stake to billionaire Mark Walter, CEO of TWG Global.

The reported $10 billion deal would surpass the previous record set in March when the Boston Celtics were sold for $6.1 billion. Walter already owns a 20% stake in the Lakers and is best known for his controlling interest in the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won the World Series last year.

Walter’s sports portfolio also includes stakes in Chelsea Football Club and the Cadillac Formula 1 team, which will enter the grid in 2026.

Though the final sale price could rise, the transaction has already attracted major attention. Jerry Buss bought the Lakers for $67.5 million in 1979, and under his family’s ownership, the team secured 11 NBA titles. Ownership passed to his six children after his death in 2013, with Jeanie Buss serving as team governor—a role she’s expected to retain under the new ownership structure.

NBA legend Magic Johnson expressed strong support for the sale, calling it a positive step for the franchise’s future.

Ghana’s most explosive rap beefs that shook the internet this decade

0

From L to R: Sarkodie, M.anifest, Medikal, Amerado, and Strongman Burner From L to R: Sarkodie, M.anifest, Medikal, Amerado, and Strongman Burner

Over the years, Ghanaian rap has been defined not just by lyrical finesse and rhythm but also by the fiery rivalries that have erupted between artistes.

These rap beefs and diss tracks have served as powerful tools of self-expression, allowing musicians to assert dominance, defend their artistry, and challenge one another in a genre built on lyrical prowess.

Beyond the drama, these lyrical battles have shaped careers, stirred fan bases, and significantly influenced the growth of Ghana’s music industry.

Here’s a look at some of the most impactful rap feuds in Ghana that set the internet ablaze and left a lasting mark on the scene.

Sarkodie vs. M.anifest (2016)

The legendary rap battle between Sarkodie and M.anifest erupted in 2016 and remains one of the most iconic moments in Ghanaian music.

It all began when Sarkodie released “Bossy”, claiming lyrical supremacy and throwing a subtle jab at M.anifest with the line: “M.anifest wo be tie me nanso me mpɛ wo style.”

M.anifest responded with “god MC”, a calm yet surgical diss that questioned Sarkodie’s artistic authenticity. Sarkodie fired back with “Kanta”, a fiery track that included a controversial jab at local fabric brand GTP, drawing public backlash.

Though tensions ran high, the beef eventually simmered. The two artists later shared the stage at Manifestivities, symbolically ending the feud and showing mutual respect.

Lyrical Joe vs. Amerado (2022–2024)

This lyrical war kicked off in mid-2022 after Amerado won the Best Rapper award at the 3Music Awards.

Lyrical Joe, feeling the award was undeserved, criticized Charterhouse, not Amerado directly.

Amerado fired back with “Kyibom”, branding Lyrical Joe a “wack rapper.” What followed was a series of hard-hitting diss tracks, including Joe’s “Baboon”, “Mute”, “Obey”, and “Sin No More”. Amerado returned fire with “Ponky Joe”, igniting one of the most intense lyrical exchanges in recent years.

The feud briefly crossed a line when Lyrical Joe dragged TV host Delay into the mix, prompting veteran producer Hammer to caution both rappers to keep the feud within the bounds of music.

Eventually, tempers cooled. By April 2024, Lyrical Joe even acknowledged Amerado’s musical growth, praising his shift toward singing, a mature close to an otherwise fierce rivalry.

Strongman vs. Medikal (2019)

Arguably one of the most talked-about rap beefs in Ghana, the clash between Strongman and Medikal began when Medikal released “To Whom It May Concern”, claiming he had “saved” Ghanaian rap. Strongman didn’t take this move lightly.

Strongman responded with “Don’t Try” and “Immortal”, both sharp diss tracks that cemented his lyrical strength. Medikal retaliated with “The Last Burial”, triggering a rapid-fire exchange that saw 4–6 diss tracks dropped within days.

Things took a personal turn when Medikal mentioned Strongman’s partner, Nana Ama. Strongman hit back in “Don’t Try”, calling out Fella Makafui, Medikal’s then-girlfriend.

Strongman later expressed regret, admitting he only responded personally because Medikal crossed the line by disrespecting his wife. He advised artistes to keep diss tracks within professional boundaries and avoid involving family members.

Eventually, both rappers buried the hatchet. In January 2020, they released a collaborative track, “Bossu”, officially ending the feud.

Final thoughts

These rap beefs have done more than entertain. They’ve driven creativity, sharpened lyrical skills, and deepened artiste-fan engagement.

While often controversial, they’ve pushed Ghanaian rappers to elevate their craft and have become a vital part of the industry’s evolution.

From the raw diss bars to eventual reconciliation, each battle reflects the dynamic and resilient spirit of Ghana’s hip-hop scene, one built on competition, respect, and lyrical mastery.

Messi’s words about Ronaldo spark explosive fans reactions

0

Lionel Messi is a player of Inter Miami Lionel Messi is a player of Inter Miami

Fresh off a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over Porto in the FIFA Club World Cup, Lionel Messi not only made headlines for his stunning free kick, his 50th goal for Inter Miami, but also his rare and composed remarks about longtime rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Argentine’s comments, centred on mutual respect and the end of their fierce competition, have triggered a tidal wave of fans reactions across social media.

Speaking after the match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where he curled home a trademark left-footed free kick to seal victory for Inter Miami, Messi reflected on his years battling Ronaldo at the pinnacle of world football.

“The competition between us was on the pitch, and each one of us was striving to do the best for his team whenever and wherever he was. But of course, everything remains, as always, on the pitch, and after that, we go back to being two normal people,” he said.

Although the Argentine admitted that they are not the best of friends, he still acknowledged the success Ronaldo has had throughout his career.

“We’re not friends, of course, because we don’t spend time together, but what we share is always within a framework of great respect. I have great admiration for what he has achieved in his career and what he continues to achieve, because he continues to compete at the highest levels,” he added.

The quote, modest and mature, instantly became a catalyst for debates.

Many fans praised Messi for his humility and composure, claiming his words revealed the stark contrast in personality between the two footballing icons.

A strong faction of supporters argued that while Messi keeps his rivalry professional and respectful, Ronaldo has, in the past, used interviews and social media to make pointed remarks or assert his superiority, a move they see as boastful and unnecessary.

But not everyone agreed with that narrative.

Ronaldo’s fans quickly jumped to his defence, pointing out that the Portuguese superstar has also spoken respectfully about Messi on multiple occasions.

They highlighted past interviews in which Ronaldo referred to their rivalry as “special” and said he had “affection” for Messi, even reminiscing about translating for him at award ceremonies.

These fans argue that the portrayal of Ronaldo as arrogant is exaggerated, and often stems from the media and fan interpretations, rather than Ronaldo’s actual words.

“Mark My Words” – Ex-NPP Chair Warns Bawumia-Ken Contest Could Be Worse Than Alan’s Exit

0

A former Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Fomena, Akwasi Nti, has raised alarm over the potential fallout from the party’s upcoming flagbearer election scheduled for January 2026 as reported by Ghana Web.

Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV, Nti cautioned that the party’s leadership must ensure complete fairness and transparency in the process.

Nti emphasized that any signs of bias or imposition could lead to deeper divisions than those caused by the exit of former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, who left to form his own political party.

He argued that the NPP must prioritize the needs of the grassroots and youth, suggesting that fresh, transformative ideas could come from new members, not just those with long-standing party ties.

“The party must listen to the base. The two leading contenders, Kennedy Agyapong and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, are not just ordinary members,” Nti stated.

“They are strong forces within the party, and we must ensure fairness so that whoever loses will feel respected enough to stay with the party.”

He warned that if the party fails to learn from past mistakes, the fallout could be even worse than Kyerematen’s departure.

Nti’s comments come as other potential contenders, including Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Boakye Agyarko, also emerge in the race.

I’ve done nothing wrong, my ‘Dr’ title is honorary

0

Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, Desmond De-Graft Paitoo, has responded to an inquiry from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) regarding his use of the “Dr.” title.

In a letter that has since circulated widely, GTEC requested that the MP clarify the institution that awarded him the doctorate, whether it was earned or honorary, and the date it was conferred.

Speaking to Channel One on Friday, June 20, the MP revealed that he has instructed his lawyers to respond formally to the Commission. He, however, raised concerns about what he views as politically motivated actions by GTEC.

“I wonder why GTEC is targeting the NDC members, and who is influencing them to do that. If you want to invite me for questioning, write a letter to me personally. I have handed over the case to my lawyer, so I will speak once he responds,” he said.

Mr. Paitoo also denied using the honorary title in any official capacity.

“I didn’t earn anything on my own; I was honoured for the work that I have done. It is not an academically earned title. Even on my website, I haven’t put anything there,” he explained.

The MP suggested that the Commission’s public approach raises suspicion of partisan targeting, particularly against members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“I wonder why GTEC is targeting the NDC members,” he reiterated, calling for a more professional and confidential mode of communication from the Commission.

Portable taunts Actress Laide Bakare in new diss track after she threatened to be@t him up

The drama between controversial singer Portable and Nollywood actress Laide Bakare just took another turn — and this time, it’s musical.

Earlier this week, Portable called out Laide Bakare in a viral video, alleging that she had invited him to perform at her party but didn’t have money to pay. According to him, he declined the invite and she got upset, allegedly calling him “a dirty boy from Sango.”

Laide didn’t take the accusation lightly. She responded in Yoruba via a video post, warning Portable to keep her name out of his mouth. In the clip, she threatened to beat him in yoruba “dabara bo e” (a Yoruba expression suggesting a hard slap on the back), adding that she won’t tolerate disrespect.

In true Portable fashion, the singer didn’t let it slide. He has now dropped a diss track aimed squarely at Laide Bakare, using her own words particularly the slap reference as part of the chorus and lyrical jabs in the song.

Church of Pentecost commissions 35-bed hospital in Bolgatanga

0

By Anthony Adongo Apubeo

Bolgatanga, June 20,  GNA – The Church of Pentecost has commissioned a state-of-the-art 35-bed hospital in Bolgatanga to provide quality and accessible healthcare services to residents of the Upper East Region and surrounding communities.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) hospital is equipped with advanced medical technologies and facilities tailored to meet the healthcare needs of the region and the entire northern Ghana.

The facility comprises a fully equipped Outpatient Department (OPD) with an emergency unit, male and female wards, consulting rooms, a delivery ward, dispensary, surgical theatre, diagnostic laboratory, public health unit, doctor’s office, and other essential amenities.

The facility, named Pentecost Hospital – Bolgatanga, forms part of the Church’s wider social intervention programme under its “Possessing the Nations” agenda, launched in 2018, which seeks to transform society through  principles and values of God.

To this end, the Church has been investing in critical sectors such as health, education, water and sanitation, and security.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Bolgatanga, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, said the Church’s decision to build the hospital in Bolgatanga was born out of a tragic car accident in 2018 which occurred on the outskirts of Bolgatanga.

The accident, he said, involved a pastor (Pastor John Ofori of Wiaga District) and his family, and a newly posted minister to Siniensi (Pastor Godwin Kpobi), which exposed critical gaps in emergency healthcare within the region.

“As the urgency to seek healthcare services for these victims heightened, they were referred from Bolgatanga Hospital to Tamale Teaching Hospital and later to Duayaw Nkwanta Catholic Hospital.

“The journey took an exhausting sixteen hours. This traumatic experience, coupled with the high disparity in referral centres and the increasing population vis-à-vis the limited health facilities, propelled the urgency to construct this hospital.”

He commended the Teshie-Nungua Area of the Church, under the leadership of Apostle Wilberforce Nkrumah, and other departments and members of the Church for their efforts in realising the project.

“Currently, the Church operates an impressive network of 12 healthcare facilities, including four hospitals and eight clinics, catering to more than 234,516 outpatients annually. With a committed staff of 1,199, these facilities deliver crucial healthcare services to our communities.

“As we speak, five additional health facilities, including a Specialist Hospital in Accra, are at various stages of completion. Furthermore, just in 2024, the Church generously contributed GH₵10,729,795.98 toward healthcare support for its members at various levels of the Church,” he said.

He added that apart from the health interventions, the Church had invested heavily in education, borehole drilling, correctional and police infrastructure, and skills training across the country.

Dr Peter Kwame Yeboah, Executive Director of the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), commended The Church of Pentecost for demonstrating dedication and God’s love in supporting healthcare delivery.

He explained that the facility would help boost healthcare delivery and bridge the inequalities between urban and rural areas, further contributing to accelerating Ghana’s efforts to achieve universal health coverage and primary healthcare.

In a speech read on his behalf, Mr Donatus Atanga Akamugri, the Upper East Regional Minister, lauded The Church of Pentecost, describing the facility as “a vital health initiative that will serve as a cornerstone for improved healthcare.”

Naba Yelzoya Kosom Asaga II, Paramount Chief of Nangodi and member of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, urged the management of the facility to not only ensure a proper maintenance culture but also the health workers to be professional in providing hope and healing to clients who visit the facility.

‘I don’t fear GRA audit’ – Shatta Wale slams critics

Dancehall musician, Shatta Wale Dancehall musician, Shatta Wale

Dancehall musician, Shatta Wale, has hit back at critics, particularly media personality Johnnie Hughes, amid growing calls for the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to investigate celebrities flaunting luxury lifestyles on social media.

This comes after a viral video circulated on June 19, 2025, in which Johnnie Hughes joined a section of concerned netizens urging the GRA to question public figures who display extravagant wealth without a clear, traceable source of income.

In the video, Hughes questioned why some celebrities are suddenly rushing to explain the source of their wealth, especially in the wake of recent FBI arrests of suspected fraudsters.

“They say; this is my Rolls Royce, Bentley, Maybach do you know how much those cars cost what work have you done? Our very own institutions in this country have also failed us to a very large extent. Somebody just suddenly starts showing these things anyhow.

“If I were working at GRA, I will just invite you to come and show me your books and how you made the money. It is that simple. I am not going to fight you, I am not going to come and pick you up in a Rambo style… I will just invite you to come and explain to me how did you make it,” he said.

The media personality’s comments have since been widely interpreted as a subtle jab at the likes Shatta Wale.

In response, Shatta fired back at Johnie, stating that he has nothing to hide and wouldn’t be intimidated if the GRA decided to question him.

“Kwasiaaaaa you think GRA don’t have ways to check how I bought… Villager speaking English human being,” he said.

NIB has destroyed $350 million worth of cocaine intercepted in Cape Coast tipper truck NIB has destroyed $350 million worth of cocaine intercepted in Cape Coast tipper truck

The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has destroyed 3.3 tonnes of cocaine, estimated to be worth $350 million, after intercepting the narcotics hidden in a tipper truck travelling from Cape Coast to Accra in March 2025.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the destruction exercise was carried out on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the Bundase Military Base.

The operation followed a series of confirmatory tests and was witnessed by the trial judge, state prosecutors, and officials from both the NIB and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).

Other confiscated narcotic and pharmaceutical substances seized by NACOC were also destroyed as part of the exercise.

Speaking to the media during the destruction, NACOC Director General, Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, underscored the Commission’s determination to stamp out drug trafficking and safeguard the future of Ghanaian youth.

“We carried out this operation openly to demonstrate our resolve to end this threat. I urge those engaging in this trade to stop. We won’t allow them to continue importing illicit drugs that ruin lives,” he stated.

He also announced plans to intensify enforcement efforts across the country beginning next month.

“We’re preparing a series of special operations to expose and apprehend drug traffickers. We urge the public and media to support us as we bring these offenders into the spotlight and hold them accountable. This cannot go on in our country,” Brigadier General Mantey noted.

OSP charges four public officials for attempting to seize $204K worth of rice at Tema Port

0

The rice, contained in ten 20-foot containers, was valued at $204,770 The rice, contained in ten 20-foot containers, was valued at $204,770

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has charged four public officials with corruption for conspiring to hijack 10 containers of rice at the Tema Port.

The rice, contained in ten 20-foot containers, was valued at $204,770 and had been legally imported from Thailand in 2022.

The four accused individuals are:

• Issah Seidu, General Services Manager at the National Insurance Commission,

• James Keck Osei, a former Director of Administration at the Vice President’s Secretariat,

• John Abban, and Peter Archibold Hyde, both senior officials of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority.

According to the OSP, Seidu fraudulently claimed the rice using fake documents and a forged letter allegedly issued by the Office of the Vice President.

Seidu and Osei, together with Customs officials Abban and Hyde, allegedly conspired to override customs processes and secure the release of the goods.

Although the rice had been lawfully imported and the necessary duties fully paid, the group attempted to have the containers auctioned to Seidu under fraudulent pretenses.

Their plot unraveled following internal investigations and a ruling by the High Court, which exposed the scheme.

The OSP confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) dated June 19, 2025, that the four accused persons are expected to appear in court on Friday, June 27, 2025.

According to court documents, Issah Seidu, aged 53, served as General Services Manager at the National Insurance Commission and also operated as a businessman between April and July 2022.

He has been charged with corruption of a public officer for attempting, directly and indirectly, to influence James Keck Osei, a public officer, in the discharge of his duties at the Vice President’s Secretariat.

Katrina Adams is a former president of the USTA Katrina Adams is a former president of the USTA

Renowned tennis executive and former United States Tennis Association (USTA) President Katrina Adams is set to arrive in Ghana from June 20 to 24, 2025, for a landmark visit aimed at developing grassroots tennis and advancing women’s leadership.

The trip, organised by the Africa 10 Foundation, will feature a series of tennis clinics and leadership engagements. Adams will be joined by fellow former professional player Roger Smith. Together, they will lead youth-focused clinics at the Accra Tennis Club.

The first session, on Saturday, June 21, will cater to players aged 7 to 12, while the second, on Sunday, June 22, will target the 13–17 age group.

Both sessions will also involve direct engagement with local coaches, offering mentorship and guidance on player development and coaching strategy.

Adams’ visit also includes a high-level roundtable titled “Legacy: What’s Next for Ghana Tennis?” on June 21 at the Kempinski Hotel, bringing together key figures to discuss the sport’s future in the country.

Off the court, she will launch her book Own Your Arena and host a Women in Leadership Roundtable focused on visibility, voice, and victory.

Kojo Annan, founder of the Africa 10 Foundation, suggests that Adams’ visit won’t be a one-off event, but rather one that could spark long-term change, particularly in how Ghana nurtures talent and supports women in leadership roles.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Ms. Katrina Adams to Ghana. Her visit is more than just a series of tennis clinics; it’s an opportunity to inspire a generation, empower our coaches, and reinforce our commitment to women’s leadership, both on and off the court. We believe her presence will leave a lasting legacy for sports development and female empowerment in Ghana,” he said.

Adams, one of the most influential women in global tennis, is expected to leave a lasting impact not only on young athletes but on Ghana’s sporting landscape as a whole.

Kennedy Agyapong is the Joshua to take us to the promised land – NPP MP [Audio]

0

Nhyiaeso Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Stephen Amoah, has expressed confidence that former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, is the right man to become the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) next flagbearer.

Dr. Amoah, a member of Mr. Agyapong’s campaign strategy team, described him as the “Joshua” appointed to lead Ghana into its promised land.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, he emphasised that Mr. Agyapong has been ordained by God and that his campaign team remains resolute in their mission.

The former Deputy Finance Minister backed his remarks with a biblical reference from 2 Timothy 1:7, which states: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

“He is the Joshua. God has appointed him to take Ghana to our promised land. If the NPP wants him, fine. But if not, there is no need to intimidate or cause fear, because God has not given us the spirit of timidity,” he declared.

“The deceit, lies and manipulation will not take us anywhere. If we want to adopt a Cinderella syndrome—knowing who the shoe fits but keeping him locked away—it is unto us,” he added.

Dr. Amoah’s remarks come in response to the recent public endorsement of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by over 60 NPP MPs, in support of his second presidential bid.

Describing the move as “propaganda,” he accused certain factions within the NPP of pressuring MPs, particularly first-timers, into publicly endorsing Dr. Bawumia.

He urged first-time lawmakers to stand their ground and resist any form of blackmail or intimidation.

MTN Takes Over Madina With M-Care Sensitisation

MTN staff interacting with a trader

MTN Ghana, as part of its 21 days of Y’ello Care initiative, engaged traders of the Madina Market on the importance of subscribing to its M-Care platform.

MTN Ghana’s M-Care is an online health consultation and insurance platform that provides accessible digital healthcare to those in need, aimed at driving meaningful change across communities.

Some of the features of the platform include online medical consultation, which allows users to consult with medical professionals online, making healthcare more accessible.

Also, when one subscribes to the platform, MTN pays for the first three months of subscription for beneficiaries, ensuring they have access to quality healthcare.

Digital Services Coordinator, MTN Ghana, Kofi Owiredu Hanson, said M-Care is part of MTN’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote digital inclusion, especially in underserved areas.

He mentioned that the reason for the sensitization in the market area is to increase access to healthcare services, saying,” We are offering M-care services to the people of Madina for one month for free so they can have easy access to medical care from professional healthcare providers.

The reason is that research has shown that people like to self-medicate, and we at MTN are trying to curb that habit, hence the introduction of the M-Care initiative.”

Kofi Owiredu added that by promoting online health consultations, M-Care also contributes to digital literacy among users.

Auntie Mumuni, a trader in an interview, expressed gratitude to MTN Ghana for their one-month of free M-Care service to the traders at the Madina market.

“With the little knowledge that I have acquired from them, I think this online service is very convenient for most of us who don’t even have enough time to visit the health centre when confronted with a minor illness,” she said.

Billionaire Rihanna reveals surprisingly budget pregnancy craving

0

Rihanna may be worth over $1.4 billion, but she’s not too rich for a fast food fix.

The 37-year-old superstar, currently expecting her third child with A$AP Rocky, was spotted indulging a budget-friendly craving at the iconic Southern California burger chain Fatburger on Friday.

Dressed in a ruffled light brown summer dress with a baseball cap and Puma sneakers, the Fenty Beauty mogul looked runway-ready—even with a fast food drink in hand.

Pregnancy craving or not, she still pulled off her signature style with ease.

Rihanna appeared in high spirits during the outing, despite still mourning the loss of her father Ronald Fenty, who tragically passed away in May at age 70.

Meanwhile, her ex Chris Brown was back in court—this time in the UK—where he pleaded not guilty to an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub.

Appearing at Southwark Crown Court this morning, 36-year-old singer pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from an alleged assault on music producer Abraham Diaw in February 2023.

Brown—who previously made headlines in 2009 for violently assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna, a case that led to a felony conviction and lasting public backlash—is now accused of attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm with intent.

Prosecutors allege that Brown, alongside co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, 38—a rapper and producer from Dallas—carried out the attack at the Tape nightclub in Hanover Square, Mayfair, on February 19, 2023.

Both men face charges of causing grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

In addition, Brown is facing a separate charge for possession of an offensive weapon.

Meanwhile, Rihanna has not yet publicly addressed the death of her father.

Previously, Rihanna and her father were estranged before they eventually reconciled in recent years.

In 2019, she sued her dad and claimed he capitalized on her business empire.

In her filing, she alleged that his Fenty Management talent firm profited off of her Fenty Beauty line and other trademarked eponymous ventures.

Two years later, she filed to dismiss the lawsuit and had seemingly mended her relationship with him.

In 2023, when Rihanna and Rocky were expecting their second child together, Fenty gushed over his daughter and shared his excitement of becoming a grandfather to another one of their babies.

Fenty shared three children with his ex-wife Braithwaite including Rihanna, Rajad and Rorrey.

Around the time Rihanna’s career in music was taking off in 2002, her parents split up.

In addition to Rihanna, Fenty is survived by his grandchildren including Rihanna and Rocky’s sons RZA, two, Riot Rose, 18 months, and their baby on the way.

He is also survived by his other children Rajad, Rorrey as well as Kandy, Samantha, Jamie and multiple grandchildren.

Bring finance minister to repeal ‘dumsor levy’ – Afenyo-Markin to Majority Leader

0

The Minority in Parliament has called on the Business Committee of Parliament to schedule the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, to appear before the House next week to repeal the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025, commonly referred to as the Dumsor Levy, following its indefinite postponement.

Although the government suspended the implementation of the levy, the Minority Leader is pushing for its repeal.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, June 20, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin emphasised that the law should be repealed using the same certificate of urgency under which it was initially passed.

“The right thing to do is to repeal the law. The Majority Leader should programme the Finance Minister to appear before us next week to repeal this law under the same certificate of urgency.

“It is very important, they should have Ghanaians understand that indeed what the Minority said that it was wrong to have a ‘dumsor’ levy, you have at least listened for the first time,” he said.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), on June 13, 2025, issued a directive suspending the implementation of the levy, which was set to take effect on June 16. The levy was expected to impose extra charges on petroleum products support power sector stability and help address legacy debts.

Ghanaians are yet to feel the impact of inflation slowdown, exchange rate

An economist, Professor Patrick Asuming, has noted that despite positive signs of recovery in Ghana’s economic indicators, many Ghanaians are yet to feel the impact in their daily lives.

According to him, although the exchange rate and inflation have eased in recent months, the prices of goods and services have remained largely unchanged.

He lamented the high cost of living, pointing out that prices continue to rise despite a slowdown in the rate of inflation.

“We still have to understand that prices are climbing. Yes, the rate of increase has slowed, from around 18% to about 10%, but prices haven’t declined. Things are still getting more expensive. We shouldn’t expect that the decline in inflation means that prices are coming down anytime soon,” he was quoted as saying by myjoyonline.com.

Professsor Asuming also noted that tariffs and production costs have increased, explaining that while the monetary side of the economy is showing signs of recovery, wages have remained stagnant.

“These tariffs keep going up, and it’s a big element of the cost. Wages are not increasing either, and the domestic cost of production is rising. It seems to me that the financial and monetary side of the economy has performed better, but the real sector is still lagging behind,” he said.

He further acknowledged that despite improvements in Treasury bill rates, it does not necessarily mean the economy is healthy.

“The government has been very quick to try and put its finances in order. We’ve done well on the financial side, but that doesn’t mean the broader economy is healthy,” he added.

New Dates Announced For WAFU B U-20 Cup In Accra

0

The West African Football Union Zone B (WAFU B) has announced new dates for the first-ever U-20 Cup of Nations, now set to take place in Accra, Ghana, from July 10 to July 23, 2025.

Originally scheduled for June 15–30 in Prampram, the tournament was postponed to allow for better preparations and improved conditions.

In a statement, the WAFU B Secretariat explained that the revised timeline follows adjustments made after the postponement of the broader U-20 Boys’ Cup initially planned for both WAFU Zones A and B.

“This period has been selected to ensure the smooth running of the competition… and to provide the best possible experience for all seven of our Member Associations,” the statement read.

The competition will now feature only countries within WAFU B, with Ghana set to host Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, Burkina Faso, Togo, and Benin in the regional showdown.

Iran’s supreme leader mocked mercilessly after bizarre social media posts resurface

0

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is being mocked mercilessly over a slew of bizarre social media posts that resurfaced as the Israel-Iran war broke out — including his musings about treating a woman right and even being “naughty&playful” as a school kid.

The odd posts — most of which are typed out in SMS-style abbreviations — date back at least a decade and are in stark contrast to the anti-Israel and war rhetoric that now fills the social media feed of the 86-year-old leader and most senior cleric in the extremist Islamic Republic.

In one from 2013, Khamenei recalled trying to be the class clown in clerical robes, writing: “I went 2school w/a cloak since1st days;it was uncomfortable 2wear it in front f other kids, but I tried 2make up 4it by being naughty&playful.”

Social media users were quick to fire back, with one X user replying: “U have nothing 2 B ashamed of. You’re just as naughty and playful as ever.”

“Born to be playboi carti, forced to be ayatollah,” another chimed in.

Others seized on another 2013 post in which the supreme leader offered up love advice.

“U can’t leave all tasks 2ur #wife&then criticize her.Even if she’s a scientist/politician,yet when interacting within family,she’s a #flower,” he wrote in the Sep. 3, 2013 post.

“Underratedly top 10 poster of all time,” one person quipped.

One user quickly fired back: “Someone please take power away from him and fulfil his destiny of being a sorrowing Sufi poet.”

The spate of decade-old posts emerged as the defiant leader vowed “the Iranian nation is not one to surrender” as its war with archenemy, Israel, raged on.

He threatened, too, that if the US got involved in the conflict it would bring “irreparable damage to them.”

Israel, in response, branded him “the modern Hitler” who “should no longer continue to exist.”

How Justice Ackaah-Boafo, Afenyo-Markin, and Ahiafor ‘fumbled’ national pledge during vetting

0

Bernard Ahiafor, Justice Ackaah-Boafo and Afenyo-Markin Bernard Ahiafor, Justice Ackaah-Boafo and Afenyo-Markin

A hilarious moment unfolded during the vetting of Supreme Court nominee Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo on Friday, June 20, 2025, as the nominee and some members of the vetting committee fumbled their lines while attempting to recite the national pledge.

The light-hearted exchange began after Justice Ackaah-Boafo, during his submission, encouraged citizens to embrace patriotism. In response, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin asked the nominee to recite the national pledge.

Somewhat embarrassed, Justice Ackaah-Boafo admitted, “Mr. Chair, I am not sure I am able to recite it,” prompting laughter around the table.

Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor jumped to the nominee’s defense, saying, “He’s right to say he cannot recite it; why insist on it?”

Afenyo-Markin then clarified that he simply wanted the nominee to share any part of the pledge he could recall. Taking up the challenge, the Justice managed the opening line but quickly stalled.

In an effort to assist, Afenyo-Markin began reciting the pledge line by line for the Justice to repeat, only to stumble himself midway.

Noticing the slip, Ahiafor teased, “But you are struggling too.”

With a grin, Afenyo-Markin replied, “At least I made an attempt.”

Ahiafor quipped in return, “That’s exactly why I didn’t try, I didn’t want to struggle!”

Their humorous banter drew laughter across the room, providing a rare light-hearted moment in what is typically a serious and formal vetting process.

Yaw Nsarkoh calls for overhaul of political parties to safeguard Ghana’s democracy

0

Renowned corporate leader and public intellectual, Mr Yaw Nsarkoh, has called for sweeping reforms to Ghana’s political party system, campaign financing mechanisms, and civic culture to prevent what he described as the country’s descent into a “Santa Claus Democracy.”

Speaking during an Occasional Lecture at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences on Thursday, Mr Nsarkoh criticised Ghana’s two main political parties—the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—for transforming into electoral machines that serve narrow interests rather than platforms for people-driven development.

“Multipartyism remains the only legitimate governance model for Ghana, but its practice is in urgent need of radical surgery,” he asserted.

Mr Nsarkoh lamented that democracy is being eroded by transactional politics, with many citizens openly supporting democratic values only when their preferred party is in opposition, but remaining silent or complicit when in government.

“Santa Claus democracies are attempts at democracy without democrats,” he warned.

He expressed concern over the growing romanticisation of military coups, particularly among the youth—76% of whom have never experienced one—and described such sentiments as a dangerous illusion.

Campaign Financing: The “Root of All Evils”

Mr Nsarkoh strongly criticised the lack of transparency in political campaign financing, revealing that the Electoral Commission has no data on how political candidates fund their campaigns. He described this legal gap as the “root of all evils in a Santa Claus Democracy,” warning that opaque financing leaves the political system vulnerable to elite capture and corruption.

He advocated for serious investments in ideological training and policy literacy within political parties, referencing models from countries like Singapore and China, where party schools instil discipline, civic responsibility, and policy understanding.

“Our parties seem to unleash attack dogs to counter reasoned disagreement. This is not a moral climate in which any country can thrive,” he said.

Mr Nsarkoh cautioned that the current culture of personalised abuse and partisan dogfights is undermining Ghana’s democratic foundation, joking that in such a climate, even “the time of day could become a matter for legal adjudication.”

Parliament and the Politics of Hypocrisy

Turning his attention to Parliament, Mr Nsarkoh criticised what he termed the chamber’s adversarial and often hypocritical posture, recalling how Speaker Alban Bagbin had lamented MPs’ unruly conduct.

He questioned the wisdom of intense partisanship during ministerial vettings when, in the end, “they reach consensus when ex gratia is up for debate.”
“We need a more disciplined and development-focused legislative culture,” he urged.

A Call for Democratic Renewal

Concluding his address, Mr Nsarkoh reiterated his strong opposition to coups, but stressed that democracy must deliver real improvements in people’s lives to remain legitimate.

He called on all stakeholders—political parties, civil society, and the citizenry—to commit to a bold national renewal, rooted in integrity, transparency, and shared vision.

“Democracy must show itself to be responsible and deliver tangible improvements in people’s lives,” he said.

“If it is the last thing we do in this life, we must devote ourselves to cleaning up this space, with resolve and conviction.”

Akiyana is a Ghanaian dancehall artiste Akiyana is a Ghanaian dancehall artiste

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Akiyana has stated that she is not attracted to looks, but rather she wants a man who is financially supportive.

In an interview on Hitz FM on June 19, 2025, the “Nobody Bad” hitmaker noted that a man’s appearance holds little weight for her when it comes to relationships. According to her, what matters most is how financially generous the man is.

“I don’t really care about looks but number one you should be able to open your wallet because if you close your wallet I’ll close my zip,” Akiyana stated.

She explained that beyond financial support, she is also looking for someone who understands emotions and can connect with her on a deeper level.

“Number two I want somebody that is in touch with their emotions be in touch with your emotions, you need to be emotionally intelligent,” she said.

Akiyana went on to stress on the importance of care and stability in a relationship. She expressed dislike for partners who live carelessly, especially those who frequently smoke and drink, indicating that such behaviour make her uncomfortable and unhappy.

“I want somebody that is caring and cares about me, it’s so afraid to lose me. Not somebody that would be in the house smoking all the time, drinking all the time and doing stuff that it’s making me unhappy,” she added.

‘Stop blaming Chinese for galamsey; Ghanaians are behind it’ – Chinese Ambassador laments

0

Tong Defa is the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Tong Defa is the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, has asserted that it is unfair for Ghanaians to blame Chinese nationals for illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.

During a media interaction in Accra on Thursday, June 19, 2025, the ambassador insisted that it is Ghanaians who are driving the galamsey menace, not the Chinese.

“It is unfair to always blame the Chinese. From my understanding, it is the local people who are involved in and facilitating these illegal activities,” he lamented.

Tong Defa further stated that while galamsey cannot be completely eradicated, it must be regulated to reduce its environmental impact.

“You can never eliminate those small mines. The government must work on a policy to reduce the pollution of water bodies and forests,” he noted.

He also expressed confusion over the tendency to associate galamsey exclusively with Chinese nationals.

“I don’t understand why, when people say galamsey, they automatically associate it with the Chinese,” he said.

The ambassador’s remarks come at a time when public anger over galamsey is high, with civil society organisations and environmental advocates continuing to demand decisive action against illegal mining activities.

The government is expected to raise GH¢4.551 billion from the 91-day, 182-day, and 365-day treasury bills on June 20, 2025.

The latest auction results from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) show that the government fell short of its treasury bills target by GH¢393 million, reflecting a 5.19% undersubscription.

The government had aimed to raise GH¢7.58 billion but received total bids of GH¢7.19 billion, marking a sharp drop compared to the selective acceptance recorded in previous auctions.

In this round, the government accepted nearly all available bids, particularly in the shorter tenors, likely in response to upcoming high maturities.

For the 364-day bill, GH¢173 million out of GH¢204 million in bids was accepted.

Meanwhile, interest rates continued to decline across the curve.

The 91-day rate dropped by 9 basis points to 14.70%, the 182-day rate fell by 21 basis points to 15.25%, and the 364-day rate eased by 6 basis points to 15.74%.

The family of the late Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, are allegedly embroiled in a dispute over a $3,000 donation from the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA).

Maria Adebusola Olanrewaju, the widow of Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, claims that she has yet to receive the $3,000 donation offered by the GBA towards the burial rites of her late husband.

“The family members of my husband are fighting over the $3,000 donated by the entourage from Ghana. The money is yet to be given to me.

Immediately we received my husband’s body, his family did not allow me to perform my rites. They did not give me and the children access,” she told Accra-based Sporty FM.

The $3,000 was handed to the family when the delegation from the GBA returned the remains of the late boxer to his ancestral home in Nigeria.

The Nigerian boxer passed away in Ghana after collapsing at the Bukom Boxing Arena during an ill-fated fight with Ghana’s John Mbanugu.

An autopsy report later established that the Nigerian boxer died of cardiac arrest.

Kwabena Agyepong calls for greater inclusion of grassroots

0

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has issued a passionate appeal to delegates attending the party’s annual conference, urging them to push for deeper grassroots inclusion in the party’s ongoing constitutional reforms.

In a statement released on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 1:20 pm, Mr. Agyepong commended the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Council (NC) for largely adopting reform proposals he submitted.

GNPC reaffirms strategic role in West Africa’s Energy future

0

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to energy transformation and regional integration with a forward-looking gas strategy unveiled at the 2025 West Africa Gas Summit in Accra.

Making a presentation on the theme “GNPC’s Vision and Role in the Gas Sector,” the Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Finance, Administration and Commerce, Mr. Hamis Ussif, articulated the Corporation’s evolving role in Ghana’s gas sector and its broader vision for West Africa’s energy future, with a resounding call for strategic partnerships and infrastructure investment.

“GNPC sees gas not just as a fuel, but as the bridge to a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous energy future for Ghana and the sub-region,” Mr. Ussif noted, adding that “natural gas is the unsung hero of our energy narrative; quietly powering industries, homes, and opportunities.” He called on energy actors and policy makers in the region to recognise the immense potential of natural gas for energy security and economic transformation.

A Vision facilitated by Infrastructure, Innovation, and Inclusion

Mr. Ussif underscored GNPC’s vision to become a globally respected oil and gas company, with operations that improve the quality of life for Ghanaians. He stated that GNPC’s growing gas portfolio is vital not only for meeting domestic energy demands but also for supporting industrialisation, lowering electricity tariffs, and contributing to Government’s efforts to make Ghana the energy hub of the sub-region.

Currently, Ghana’s natural gas supply averages 425 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd), drawn from the Jubilee and TEN fields, the Sankofa-Gye Nyame field, and imports from Nigeria. This gas fuels about 70 percent of the country’s electricity generation. However, there are deficits in supply, and demand is projected to continue to rise, thus, increasing the deficit for both domestic users  and regional trade.

In response, GNPC is working with its partners to ramp up domestic production. By July 2025, gas output from the Jubilee is expected to increase from 100MMscfd to 140MMscfd, whilst the Sankofa field is expected to increase production from 245MMscfd to 270MMscfd. Mr. Ussif also pointed that these increases would still not eliminate the deficit in Ghana. Therefore, GNPC is working with its partners to operationalise the LNG import terminal in Ghana, in 2026. Over the long term, GNPC is also working with existing and new partners to intensify exploration activities in both the offshore and the onshore Voltaian Basin.

Strategic Investments Driving Ghana’s Energy Sector

GNPC’s role as an enabler in the gas value chain was highlighted by several transformative investments. Mr. Ussif pointed to the Corporation’s $190 million financing of the Takoradi-Tema Interconnection Project (TTIP), which has enabled the reverse flow of gas on the West African Gas Pipeline. This investment has improved flexibility in domestic gas transportation and energy security.

The Corporation also provided critical financial guarantees that allowed the Sankofa Gas Project to materialise and supported the development of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant. In the power sector, GNPC facilitated the deployment of the Karpowership and enabled its relocation to Sekondi to utilise indigenous gas.

Moreover, GNPC’s financing underpinned the construction of a 110-kilometre gas pipeline from Prestea to Kumasi, which laid the groundwork for a third power generation enclave in Ghana’s middle belt. Two more power plants in that enclave are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

Strengthening Private Sector Collaboration

Recognising the need for expanded capacity and innovation, Mr. Ussif extended an invitation to private sector players to partner with GNPC in shaping Ghana’s gas future. He highlighted upcoming projects such as the expansion of domestic supply from Jubilee, TEN, and Sankofa fields, the construction of the Tema City Gate, a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and the gas distribution pipeline network for the Tema industrial enclave. Mr. Ussif said. “GNPC is open for partnership—with those who share our commitment to sustainable growth, innovation, and regional development.”

A Regional Voice in Energy Transition

Mr. Ussif reiterated GNPC’s commitment to Ghana’s decarbonisation goals and principles of a just transition. He stressed that GNPC remains aligned with national policy on energy transition and will continue supporting economic transformation in ways that are inclusive, equitable, and environmentally responsible.

In closing, he made a passionate call for collaboration and optimism.

“Let us, together,  unlock the immense potential of natural gas and light the way for millions across West Africa.”

The salary deduction ordered by President Mahama is in support of the MahamaCares initiative

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the deduction of one month’s salary from all political appointees, including ministers and presidential staffers, to support the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, dubbed “MahamaCares”.

The president disclosed the deduction at an engagement at the Jubilee House on Friday, June 20, 2025, as he was announcing the redemption of the pledge of his six months’ salary in support of the fund.

He directed the Chief of Staff to commence the deduction since the appointees have started receiving their salaries.

“On the day it (the MahamaCares) was launched, we raised quite a substantial amount. All the different groups at the launch also contributed something. I also placed six months of my salary. Happily, my salary has started coming, so I will soon present my own cheque to cover the pledge that I made.

“And I’ve asked the Chief of Staff’s Office and the Special Adviser on Governmental Affairs to start the collection of the one-month salary pledge from all political appointees, ministers and appointees at the presidency,” he said.

He added, “And so we will contribute our quota. We also have a nice ceremony like this, and we will give our donation to the Minister of Health to put it in the fund while the bill goes through and becomes operational.”

Galamsey crisis rooted in Ghanaian complicity

0

Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah

Former United Nations Senior Governance Advisor, Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has backed the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana’s assertion that the illegal mining menace, locally known as galamsey, is largely driven by Ghanaian complicity rather than the actions of Chinese nationals.

He agreed with the ambassador’s claim that the galamsey crisis is not China’s problem, but rather a failure on Ghana’s part.

Professor Agyeman-Duah’s comments come amid growing concerns about the environmental and economic impact of illegal mining in Ghana.

Speaking on the JoyNews Desk programme on June 19, 2025, the professor described the ambassador’s remarks as “both valid and timely,” noting that it was not the first time such concerns had been raised by the Chinese envoy.

He cited the ambassador’s claim that many Chinese nationals involved in galamsey operations are flown into Ghana, land at Kotoka International Airport, and are then transported by bus directly to mining sites.

Professor Agyeman-Duah stressed that the galamsey crisis is a national issue requiring collective effort.

He pointed out that many of the foreign nationals involved “come from rural backgrounds and lack advanced education or sophistication,” implying the presence of a well-organized recruitment and operational network.

He urged Ghanaians to take responsibility for their actions and commit to finding sustainable solutions to the problem.

According to a myjoyonline.com report dated June 20, 2025, the professor stated, “This suggests there must be official collusion or systemic failure enabling these foreign nationals to enter the country in large numbers and be shepherded directly to illegal mining operations.”

“In that respect, the ambassador is absolutely right, the problem is us, not the Chinese,” he emphasised.

The galamsey crisis poses serious threats to Ghana’s environment, economy, and national security. Professor Agyeman-Duah called on the government to intensify its efforts by tightening immigration controls and dismantling the networks facilitating the entry and movement of illegal foreign miners.

Expressing concern over the lack of progress in the fight against galamsey, he lamented that despite political promises and legislative actions, the crisis has worsened six months into the current administration’s tenure.

He cited recent reports of official complicity, referencing the case involving Dr Bissue, allegedly confronted by a senior police officer, as well as investigative journalism exposing the involvement of senior political party officials in illegal mining.

He also criticised the ineffectiveness of regulatory bodies such as the Minerals Commission and the Gold Board, stating, “We arrest illegal miners and seize gold, yet transparency and accountability remain woefully absent.”

Calling for decisive leadership, Professor Agyeman-Duah urged the government to abandon half-measures and take bold, courageous action.

“There is an urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of our approach to combating galamsey. The government must be bold, courageous, and unwavering,” he stressed.

He warned that the previous government’s failure to effectively address galamsey significantly eroded public trust and contributed to its electoral defeat.

He also urged the current administration not to repeat the same mistakes.

Minority demands repeal of ‘dumsor levy’ after suspension by government

Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament

The Minority in Parliament has requested that the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, be scheduled to appear before the House next week to formally repeal the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 commonly referred to as the Dumsor Levy, following the government’s decision to suspend its implementation.

Speaking in Parliament on Friday, June 20, 2025, Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin urged the Business Committee to act promptly.

“The right thing to do is to repeal the law. The Majority Leader should program the finance minister to appear before us next week to repeal this law under the same certificate of urgency,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin further argued that repealing the levy would show that the government is finally acknowledging the Minority’s concerns.

“It is very important, they should have Ghanaians understand that indeed what the Minority said that it was wrong to have a ‘dumsor’ levy, you have at least listened for the first time,” he added.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) had earlier issued a directive on June 13, 2025, suspending the levy’s implementation, which was initially scheduled to begin on June 16, 2025.

The levy aimed to impose additional charges on petroleum products to support power sector stability and address outstanding legacy debts.

GH₵120k saved monthly after scrapping Jubilee House TV Subscriptions – Ofosu Kwakye

0

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has revealed that President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to discontinue all satellite television subscriptions at the Jubilee House saves the presidency approximately GH₵120,000 every month.

The directive, which forms part of the government’s renewed efforts to curb wasteful spending, ensures that no office within the presidency subscribes to DStv or any other paid satellite television service.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Mr. Ofosu Kwakye said the Mahama administration uncovered the expense while reviewing inherited operational costs at the seat of government.

“When we came to the Jubilee House, there were multiple subscriptions in addition to the local channels that we watched. When we took stock and did the calculations, we realised we were spending about GH₵120,000 monthly just on satellite subscriptions. President Mahama has cancelled all of that,” he disclosed.

He questioned the rationale behind such an expense, especially when relatively small amounts could solve pressing community problems.

“There are communities where a broken water pump costing GH₵1,000 is all that stands between them and access to clean water. Yet, here we were spending GH₵120,000 just to watch TV,” he added.

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has sparked outrage online after calling on US President Donald Trump to ban Ghanaians from entering the United States.

In a live video shared online, Shatta Wale, who has come under heavy criticism, with some netizens even calling for his arrest following the recent FBI raid in Ghana, lashed out at Ghanaians, saying, “Stupid people in this country. If anybody knows Donald Trump’s account, tag him for me.”

According to the “On God” hitmaker, Ghanaians are the most envious and unsupportive people, constantly seeking the downfall of others.

“They are the most stupid people in the world. Ghana has won the most foolish country award. It’s the only country where people wish for others to fail,” he further ranted.

The development has since drawn massive criticism, with many labelling his utterances as offensive and unpatriotic.

Shatta Wale, who has been widely speculated to be involved in fraud dismissed the allegations, stating that he isn’t afraid of any backlash because he lives a clean life and minds his own business.

Respect our sovereign right to make independent decisions

0

Roey Gilad (L) and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (R) Roey Gilad (L) and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (R)

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has urged the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, to respect Ghana’s sovereignty and its independence in making decisions on international matters.

In a lengthy Facebook post on Friday, June 20, 2025, Ablakwa expressed displeasure over Ambassador Roey Gilad’s comments, which questioned the country’s recent abstention during a vote on Iran’s nuclear compliance at an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) meeting in Vienna, Austria.

According to Ablakwa, Ghana’s decisions on international matters are guided by its foreign policy principles and its commitment to fostering peaceful relations with its global partners.

“It is worth emphasising that in the meeting with the Israeli Ambassador, I registered Ghana’s strong displeasure at his recent public pronouncements, questioning Ghana’s voting pattern at international organisations.

“I urged him to respect our sovereign right to make independent decisions based on our longstanding globally acclaimed foreign policy principles anchored on Ghana’s national interest as espoused by the 1992 Constitution, pacifist approach to peace building, non-alignment, respect for the UN Charter, adherence to the rule-based international order, belief in multilateralism and strict compliance with international law,” he said.

The minister’s comments follow public backlash and scrutiny directed at Ambassador Roey Gilad, who, during a recent breakfast meeting with editors, expressed disappointment over Ghana’s decision to abstain from the IAEA vote on Iran’s nuclear activities.

Gilad acknowledged Ghana’s sovereign right to abstain but suggested a rethink of its longstanding non-aligned policy, which he claimed is heavily influenced by the AU and Arab League.

He urged Ghana to take a more “balanced” approach to global issues and questioned whether abstention was in the country’s best interest.

“Even though Israel respects Ghana’s sovereignty and non-aligned stance, I don’t know whether this [abstention] serves the best interest for Ghana,” Gilad said.
