Harvard University sues Trump administration to stop funding freeze

0

Protesters had called for Harvard university to reject demands from the White House

Harvard University filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration to stop billions of dollars in proposed cuts.

The suit filed Monday is part of a feud that escalated last week when the elite institution rejected a list of demands that the Trump administration said was designed to curb diversity initiatives and fight anti-semitism at the school.

President Donald Trump froze $2.2bn (£1.7bn) of federal funding and also threatened the university’s tax-exempt status.

“The consequences of the government’s overreach will be severe and long-lasting,” Harvard’s president Alan M. Garber said in a letter to the university on Monday.

Mr Garber said the funding freeze had affected critical research, including studies on pediatric cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

“In recent weeks, the federal Government has launched a broad attack on the critical funding partnerships that make this invaluable research possible,” the school’s lawsuit said.

“This case involves the government’s efforts to use the withholding of federal funding as leverage to gain control of academic decisionmaking at Harvard.”

Aside from funding, the Trump administration days ago also threatened Harvard’s ability to enrol international students.

The White House has not commented on Monday’s suit.

Exclusive: The Dark Side of Ghana Sports: Nation’s Administrators Under Fire

0

Ghana’s sports landscape is marked by a significant imbalance, with a ministry dedicated to football but none for sports as a whole.

Bernard Anbataayela Morna, a veteran sports administrator, highlights this disparity, noting that the excessive focus on football overshadows grassroots development and infrastructure investment, ultimately hindering the growth of emerging talents.

A glaring gap exists in Ghanaian sports, where football receives disproportionate attention while other sports struggle for resources and support.

According to Bernard Anbataayela Morna, a seasoned sports administrator, this imbalance stifles grassroots development and talent nurturing.

Persecondnews reports that Ghana’s sports sector is heavily skewed towards football, with a dedicated ministry, while other sports are left to languish.

In an exclusive chat with Persecondnews correspondent in Abuja, Morna, President of Kalibi Sporting Club and the Presidential Candidate and Leader of the People’s National Convention (PNC) highlighted the deplorable state of sports infrastructure in Ghana, contrasting it with the magnificent MKO Abiola Stadium Complex in Abuja.

According to him, while the MKO Abiola Stadium has cutting-edge facilities for various sports, Ghana’s main sports complex in Accra is woefully inadequate.

“The lack of investment in sports infrastructure is a significant impediment to the development of sports in Ghana.”

Persecondnews reports that El-Wak Wings, a Ghanaian volleyball team, was poised to shine on the continental stage at the African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship in Abuja.

However, the team was denied the opportunity to participate due to a lack of state support.

This oversight is a testament to the neglect faced by sports beyond football in Ghana.

Morna urged Ghana and Nigeria to go beyond merely hosting continental competitions that are often dominated by North African teams, such as the All African Games in Accra and the African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship in Abuja, and instead focus on developing their own sports infrastructure and talents.

The Full interview:

PSN: What prompted you to invest in volleyball?

Morna: “Promoting the marginalised is crucial, and volleyball is one such sport that remains underappreciated in West African nations, particularly Ghana and Nigeria. While football garners significant attention, other sports that could bring glory to our nations are often overlooked by sports administrators.

“A prime example is the Ghanaian volleyball team, El-Wak Wings, which was set to participate in the African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship in Abuja but lacked state backing. This championship would have provided valuable exposure and helped uncover new talent for Ghana.

“As an advocate of Ghana Volleyball, I aim to highlight the benefits of this championship and advocate for its development in Ghana to enhance the national fortunes of volleyball.”

PSN: What are the major obstacles hindering Ghana sports success?

Morna: “The biggest challenge facing sports development in Ghana is inadequate sports infrastructure. I commend the MKO Abiola Stadium Complex, which boasts comprehensive facilities for various sports, including swimming, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and multiple pitches.

“In stark contrast, Ghana’s Premier Sports Complex and Accra Stadium lack basic facilities, such as a proper athletics track. This disparity highlights a broader issue: Ghana has a ministry of football, not a ministry of sport.

“It’s alarming that a nation with a rich football history, having won the African Cup of Nations in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982, has failed to qualify for AFCON 2025 in Morocco.

“The budget allocated to a single Black Stars player could have sponsored the El-Wak Wings to participate in the African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship. Sports administrators must prioritise other sports to achieve continental and international success.

“Ghana’s reliance on past glory is unsustainable; sports administrators must recognize that sports is a serious business that can generate income, drive employment, and contribute to Ghana’s GDP.

“Generating income in sports requires proper investment in infrastructure and human resources. However, Ghana’s sports sector lacks investment in these critical areas. For instance, few Ghanaian coaches possess a Licence A coaching badge, which is essential for developing top-notch athletes.

“Moreover, when opportunities for skill development arise, such as the upcoming coaching course in Nigeria, Ghanaian officials are often denied funding to participate and sharpen their skills. This lack of investment in human resources hinders the growth and competitiveness of Ghanaian sports.”

PSN: Why has West Africa’s dominance in sports diminished in recent years?

Morna: “We must commend the French-speaking countries in West Africa for their coordination and strategic approach to sports, similar to the North Africans.

“Morocco’s teams, for instance, frequently participate in European competitions, which has contributed to their dominance in African sports. Egypt’s Al-Ahly is a prime example of success, excelling in volleyball, basketball, and football due to intentional investment and a focus on exposure through tournament participation.

“The North African region’s approach to talent development, including grassroots scouting and gradual development, allows their athletes to reach elite levels by ages 16-20. In contrast, West Africa relies heavily on mercenaries and age falsification.

“The disparity is evident in competitions like the African Games and the African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship, where North African teams consistently dominate.

“Ghana’s hosting of the 13th African Games resulted in Egypt’s dominance, and Egyptian teams have won 10 of the last 11 championships in women’s club volleyball. It’s time for West Africa to move beyond past glory and adopt a more strategic approach to sports development.”

Henan FC pulled off an impressive second-half comeback to claim a vital 3–1 victory over Qingdao Hainiu in their Chinese Super League encounter, with Ghanaian forward Frank Acheampong capping off the win with a well-taken goal.

Qingdao Hainiu started the match brightly and broke the deadlock in the 25th minute.

Jin Yonghao found the back of the net after a well-crafted move, assisted by Song Wenjie, putting Qindao ahead and setting the tone for what initially looked like a dominant display.

However, Henan FC regrouped and came out firing in the second half.

Their persistence paid off in the 65th minute when Brazilian defender Lucas Maia grabbed the equaliser, reigniting hope for the home crowd.

The momentum shifted entirely in Henan’s favour just six minutes later.

With Qingdao on the back foot, Henan’s relentless pressure led to a second goal in the 71st minute, marking the team’s first lead of the match and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

The final blow came from none other than Frank Acheampong, who sealed the victory with a clinical finish.

The Ghanaian forward showed his quality and composure in front of goal, making it 3–1 and effectively putting the game beyond Qingdao’s reach.

This is Frank Acheampong’s second goal of the season.

The win sees Henan FC climb to 12th place on the Chinese Super League table, giving them a crucial boost as the season progresses.

It was a spirited performance that highlighted their resilience and attacking prowess, especially in the second half.

Henan FC will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming fixtures, while Qingdao Hainiu will be left to reflect on a missed opportunity after letting their early lead slip away.

Neglect of Alhaji Said Sinare Sparks Outrage Within NDC Ranks and Council of State

0

Alhaji Said Sinare

A wave of discontent is sweeping through the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Council of State following the exclusion of veteran party stalwart Alhaji Said Sinare from a fresh list of ambassadorial appointments submitted for approval last Thursday.

Sinare, a long-time loyalist and a political force within Ghana’s Muslim and Zongo communities, was reportedly set to receive one of the most strategic ambassadorial postings.

However, in a last-minute twist that has stunned party loyalists and insiders alike, his name was replaced by that of his cousin, actress Kalsoume Sinare, a move sources have condemned as an act of political nepotism.

Insiders familiar with the Council’s deliberations revealed to this outlet that the replacement has triggered strong backlash, with senior members of the Council expressing disappointment over what they describe as a betrayal of loyalty, commitment, and long-term service to the party.

“This is not just about one man being removed,” said a source close to the Council. “It’s about the message being sent that dedication, sacrifice, and grassroots mobilization mean nothing in this current political arrangement.”

Alhaji Said Sinare, who has served as Ghana’s ambassador to both Egypt and Saudi Arabia, is widely credited with helping to secure the NDC’s support base in the Zongo communities, especially in tightly contested elections like those in 2016, 2020, and 2024.

His efforts, often financed personally, saw him tour over 4,000 Zongo communities to strengthen party loyalty and mobilize votes for the NDC.

“To disregard that kind of sacrifice, only to elevate someone with no similar track record and a family relation at that is an affront not only to Sinare, but to all those who have worked behind the scenes for the party,” said a frustrated regional organizer of the NDC.

The 22-member list, which includes names such as Baba Jamal, Victor Smith, Kojo Bonsu, and Hon. Moses Asaga, is believed to have undergone several revisions before submission.

Despite significant internal lobbying by some Council of State members to retain Alhaji Sinare, party insiders claim that external influences prevailed.

It is however held that the party risks alienating a critical voter bloc with this perceived snub.
“Our brothers and sisters in the Zongos are watching. Sinare represents their struggles, their aspirations, their voice. Neglecting him will not go unnoticed.”

The growing chorus of disapproval has placed increasing pressure on NDC flagbearer and former President John Dramani Mahama, who many believe must intervene to prevent lasting damage.
Several grassroots organizations within the Zongo communities have reportedly begun mobilizing to petition the party leadership over the issue.

“This isn’t about entitlement,” one NDC youth organizer from Madina told this publication. “It’s about recognizing service and not rewarding lineage over legacy.”

As murmurs of discontent grow louder, the NDC faces a crucial test: will it continue to prioritize loyalty and legacy, or risk fracturing its core support base through political favoritism?

With election momentum already building, the stakes are high and the Zongo voice, long a pillar of NDC support, may be the deciding factor.

It is time for nationwide testing, vaccination

Dr Robert Gish, a globally recognized hepatologist and one of the foremost experts in hepatitis B and liver disease, has called for nationwide testing and vaccination against the infection.

According to Dr Gish, who also leads the Hepatitis Foundation, early detection is critical in preventing the escalation of the disease and ensuring proper treatment.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement with health professionals during his three-day tour of the country on April 19, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Dr Gish emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive action.

The tour includes inspections of facilities treating hepatitis B, visits to health workers, and the dissemination of information on effective treatment strategies.

“One out of four people with hepatitis B will die of complications,” he stated.

“We need to test people and treat them to avoid stigma and discrimination. Every family, in some way, is connected to hepatitis B. So many individuals are living with the infection.”

He further stressed the low testing and treatment rates in the country.

“When it comes to treatment, we are only at the beginning. Only a small fraction of infected individuals have been tested, and even fewer have received treatment. It is time for a nationwide campaign for testing and treatment. We need simple testing procedures, linkage to care, and, very importantly, instant vaccination,” he added.

Highlighting the link between hepatitis B and liver cancer, Dr Gish noted, “Liver cancer rates in Ghana are among the highest in the world. Very few patients have been treated, and this is partly due to food contamination by fungi. We need to ensure that our foodstuffs are properly cleaned.”

This stakeholder engagement brought together clinicians, civil society actors, and policymakers to strengthen multi-sectoral collaboration, share insights, and advance coordinated efforts in the national and regional response to hepatitis B and liver cancer.

Dr Asare Offei, a liver surgeon at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and leader of the Liver Cancer Foundation in Ghana, also spoke at the event.

“For early detection purposes, we’ve been reaching out to communities to provide education,” he said.

“I want to encourage everyone to go and get tested for hepatitis B. Even if you already know your status, don’t be deceived into thinking the virus is inactive. You need to check at least every six months. Currently, 8 to 13 percent of Ghanaians are living with hepatitis B,” Dr Asare Offei added.

The operation was initiated after troops stationed at Binduri heard sporadic gunfire emanating from the Binduri Central Market area in the early hours of Monday, April 21, 2025.

A combined team from the 11 Mechanised Battalion and the Joint Task Force, supported by the Police, swiftly moved to the location and cordoned off the area to conduct a detailed search

In a statement issued on Monday, April 21, the military said, “A combined team from the 11 Mechanised Battalion and the Joint Task Force, supported by the Police, proceeded to conduct detailed search operations to identify and apprehend those involved. During the operation, one suspected gunman was arrested and handed over to the Police.

“Items retrieved during the search included one empty M16 rifle magazine, an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition, 128 rounds of G3 ammunition, a machete, four fragmentation jackets, a pair of boots, and one helmet.

The statement said the military personnel stopped an attempted infiltration by some gunmen.

“Later in the day, some unknown gunmen tried to infiltrate Binduri, but military personnel on patrols prevented the infiltration. This led to an exchange of fire between the military and the unknown gunmen who fled the scene,” the statement added.

The military said in efforts to assist the civil authorities to maintain law and order in Bawku and its environs, officers have intensified operations in response to ongoing clashes and intermittent gunfire in the area.

“As part of efforts, troops have conducted a series of cordon and search operations aimed at restoring calm and enhancing security. In the early hours of Monday, 21 April 2025, troops deployed at Binduri heard sporadic gunshots coming from the Binduri Central Market area. Ghana’s Peter Turkson among top contenders to replace Pope Francis

0

Pope Francis, the 266th head of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Monday at the age of 88, just over 12 years after he began his historic papacy.

As the Church and the world mourns, attention is already turning to who might succeed him. A conclave, the formal gathering of cardinals to choose the next pope, is expected to take place in the next two to three weeks.

One of the names generating buzz is Peter Turkson, 76, from Ghana. If chosen, he would become the first Black pope in centuries, a historic moment for the Church.

Turkson has long been a strong voice on global issues like poverty, climate change, and economic justice. He has also stood by the Church’s traditional teachings on matters such as priesthood and marriage. However, he’s shown openness in some areas, especially around LGBTQ+ rights, arguing that laws in many African countries are too harsh.

Turkson’s diplomatic skills were trusted by Pope Francis, who sent him as a peace envoy to South Sudan. Coming from a region where Catholicism is growing fast, Turkson’s global perspective and strong moral stance could make him a compelling choice for the Church’s future.

Beyond Peter Turkson, other names being considered as potential successors to Pope Francis are:

Pietro Parolin, from Italy, is widely regarded as a leading candidate. As the Vatican’s Secretary of State since 2013, Parolin has been at the heart of Vatican diplomacy, playing a central role in delicate negotiations with countries like China and governments in the Middle East.

Péter Erdő, 72, from Hungary, represents the conservative wing of the Church. A respected intellectual and former head of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences, he has been a consistent advocate for traditional Catholic teachings and doctrine.

Matteo Zuppi, 69, of Italy, is known for his pastoral sensitivity and peacebuilding efforts, particularly through his long association with the Sant’Egidio Community. His emphasis on social justice and dialogue has earned him a reputation as a bridge-builder within the Church.

Luis Antonio Tagle, from the Philippines, is another influential name. Formerly the Archbishop of Manila, he would be the first Asian pope, a significant milestone as Asia represents the fastest-growing Catholic population.

José Tolentino Calaça de Mendonça, 59, from Portugal, is a theologian, poet, and writer with a growing influence in intellectual and spiritual circles. His thoughtful, reflective style and deep engagement with contemporary culture have drawn admiration from many corners of the Church.

Mario Grech, 68, from Malta, currently serves as Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops and is closely associated with Francis’ efforts to make the Church more inclusive and consultative.

Pierbattista Pizzaballa, 60, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, brings extensive experience in interfaith dialogue and has spent much of his ministry working in the complex religious and political landscape of the Holy Land.

Weija-Gbawe MP cautions Ghana Water over ‘careless’ Weija Dam spillage

Jerry Ahmed Shaib, MP for Weija-Gbawe Jerry Ahmed Shaib, MP for Weija-Gbawe

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe in the Greater Accra Region, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has issued a strong caution to the management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), urging the utility provider to handle the intended spillage of the Weija Dam with extreme care to prevent potential disasters.

Addressing a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Weija Municipal Assembly, the MP emphasised the importance of proactive management of the dam’s water levels, particularly as the rainy season approaches.

Shaib warned that any mishandling of the spillage process that leads to flooding or destruction of property in nearby communities would be met with fierce resistance from affected residents and local authorities.

“We have seen the devastating impact of previous spillage exercises.

Let me be clear—any problems that arise from poor management of this process will not be tolerated.

We will resist it with every means available,” he stated.

The Weija Dam, located in the Greater Accra Region, has been a source of concern during heavy rains, as excess water released from the dam often causes flooding in surrounding areas, displacing residents and damaging property.

The MP’s remarks underscore growing tensions between residents and authorities over the recurring issue and reflect calls for better communication and disaster preparedness by Ghana Water Limited.

Lands Minister weeps while detailing galamsey wreckage in Tano Nimri Forest

0

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, was visibly moved to tears after witnessing the extensive environmental destruction caused by illegal mining—commonly known as galamsey—in the Tano Nimri Forest Reserve.

Addressing the media on Monday, April 21, Mr. Buah described the scene as both heartbreaking and a national tragedy, reaffirming the government’s commitment to clamp down on illegal mining activities across the country.

While giving an update on the impact of galamsey on Ghana’s protected forests, the Minister’s voice faltered as he painted a grim picture: lush greenery turned into barren wastelands, streams clogged with mud, and rich ecosystems silenced by destruction.

Overwhelmed by the gravity of what he had seen, the Minister paused mid-speech, pulled a white handkerchief from his pocket, and wiped away tears that had welled in his eyes. The room fell silent, as his emotion underscored the weight of the crisis.

The emotional address came in the wake of a major intelligence-led operation on April 17 by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission. The raid targeted six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining Company Ltd.

The operation led to the arrest of 51 suspects and the seizure of 30 excavators, weapons, vehicles, and other mining equipment.

Describing the condition of the Tano Nimri Forest Reserve, once a thriving ecosystem, the Minister called it a “devastation of biblical proportions.”

He reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining and stressed the administration’s resolve to restore Ghana’s degraded lands.

In line with this, the Ministry has revoked Akonta Mining’s lease and begun legal proceedings against those involved. Investigations are also underway into possible complicity by some officials of the Forestry Commission and security services.

New policies will hurt mining sector growth

0

Kwaku Ampratwum Sarpong, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam and Kojo Oppong Nkrumah Kwaku Ampratwum Sarpong, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam and Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

The Minority in Parliament has cautioned government that its recent decisions in the mining sector could stifle growth, drive away foreign investment, and lead to increased job losses.

In a letter dated April 21, 2025, addressed to the Ministers for Finance and Lands and Natural Resources, the opposition described a series of recent policies as “potentially dire” for the country’s economic stability.

Signed by the Ranking Member on the Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ranking on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, Kwaku Ampratwum Sarpong, and Ranking on the Finance Committee, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, the letter criticized two new tax measures imposed on the industry a 3% Growth and Sustainability Levy on gross mining volumes introduced this year and an additional levy scheduled for 2026 to 2028.

The Minority warned that these levies are placing distressed mines under greater financial pressure and discouraging new investment.

“These royalty-like levies are putting several mines already in distress into graver financial difficulties,” the letter stated. The MPs also noted that companies mining other minerals, which have not experienced price surges, are unfairly burdened by the new taxes.

Equally worrying according to the Minority MPs is the recently passed GOLDBOD Act, which bans foreign entities from gold trading and export. The Minority argues that this move not only sends a negative signal to the global investor community but also violates the 1992 Constitution by retroactively affecting existing rights.

The group further condemned the government’s refusal to renew Goldfields Ghana Limited’s mining lease. According to the Minority, this rejection undermines investor confidence and discourages long-term commitments to the country. They argue that Ghana could have used the renewal process to renegotiate better terms rather than push an established operator out.

Concerns were also raised about the government’s decision to defund 80% of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), which traditionally supports the state’s equity interests in mining operations. The Minority believes this step reflects a retreat from Ghana’s ambition to hold meaningful stakes in resource development.

In addition to economic concerns, the statement referenced a violent incident at a mine resulting in eight deaths. The Minority linked the attack to anti-investor rhetoric from public figures and expressed dismay at the stalled investigation, which they say further undermines investor confidence.

The opposition also criticised the recent abolition of Community Mining Schemes, warning that this decision has created space for illegal mining activities to expand.

They argue that instead of scrapping the initiative, the government should have formalised and regulated it.

Calling for a policy rethink, the Minority urged the government to restore lease renewals, offer incentives, avoid hostile rhetoric, and establish a clear framework for growing local mining firms. “This is the time when government must bolster economic stability and attract, rather than discourage, foreign direct investment,” they concluded.

The Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Accra, Bishop John Kobina Louis, has emphasised that the process of electing a new pope is a deeply spiritual exercise, not one driven by politics or personal ambition.

His remarks come in the wake of the passing of Pope Francis, which has triggered the Catholic Church’s preparations for the papal conclave, a solemn assembly of 135 cardinals tasked with selecting the next pontiff.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Monday, April 21, Bishop Louis stressed that although cardinals physically cast their votes, the decision is ultimately guided by the Holy Spirit through prayer and reflection.

According to him, the conclave is grounded in faith, and not in lobbying or political strategy, as the Church collectively seeks divine direction in choosing its next leader.

“This is not a political election. It is all based on the fact that God makes a choice among the 135 cardinals who meet in Rome right after the funeral for the conclave. These cardinals, in a moment of prayer and the whole church accompanying them in prayer, will make a choice.

“They will first make a straw ballot for who they think should be the pope and as a few emerge, they become if you like, those who would be voted for and the process has to continue till at least two-thirds of the cardinals choose one particular one who stands out and of course with prayers accompanying.

“We do not know who is God’s choice for the Catholic Church, so we keep praying,” he said.

Pope Francis Died After Cerebral Stroke, Vatican Says: Latest News

0

The pontiff and the president had little in common.

One spurned the traditional red shoes and luxurious apostolic palace for religious simplicity, living humbly in a Vatican City guesthouse. The other made a brand of his own name and wrapped nearly everything he touched, from New York City skyscrapers to the Oval Office, in a gilded sheen.

But Pope Francis and President Trump disagreed over far more than style. By the time they met at the Vatican in 2017, the vast differences in their priorities and worldviews were clear.

Both rose to global prominence during the same decade of rapid political and societal change, as war, poverty and climate change disrupted nations and sent millions of migrants across the globe. And both leveraged their personal charisma to flex their power in transformative ways, remaking the Catholic church and American politics in their own outsider images.

Yet the relationship between the two was defined by the chasm between them, frequently bursting into public view in extraordinary clashes that revealed radically opposing visions of how to lead, and of what kind of world they hoped to create.

Until the pope’s final day, the two leaders had been tangling over immigration, an issue both saw as crucial to their mission and legacy.

Mr. Trump twice won the White House on promises to halt illegal border crossings, blaming undocumented immigrants for crime, economic malaise and terrorism.

Pope Francis believed that Christian love required compassionate care for migrants, and that Mr. Trump’s agenda of mass deportation violated the “dignity of many men and women, and of entire families.”

His first papal trip, in 2013, had been to the island of Lampedusa, a Mediterranean gateway to Europe for asylum seekers, to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis he felt the world was ignoring.

During the 2016 election, the pope criticized Mr. Trump’s pledge to build a wall on the United States’ border with Mexico, saying it suggested that the Republican candidate was “not Christian.”

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Pope Francis said as he flew back to Rome from Mexico hours after celebrating a 200,000-person Mass in Ciudad Juárez.

Mr. Trump shot back, calling the Pope’s comments “disgraceful” and saying, through a campaign statement, that if the Vatican were ever “attacked by ISIS,” the pope “would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been President.”

Representative Brendan Boyle, a Pennsylvania Democrat and observant Catholic, said the Pope’s early criticism of Mr. Trump had created the “completely unprecedented circumstance” of a pontiff who had openly excoriated an American president and a president who had been eager to return the fire.

“The fact that Trump, unlike previous presidents — Democrats and Republicans — was so vitriolically against immigration, and would use, and continues to use, really insulting rhetoric about immigrants, prompted this pope to speak out in a way that you didn’t see earlier,” said Mr. Boyle, who attended Pope Francis’s address to Congress in 2015.

On Monday, unlike other world leaders, who offered grateful and glowing testimonials to the pope, Mr. Trump offered a terse tribute on social media. “Rest in Peace Pope Francis!” he wrote on Truth Social. “May God Bless him and all who loved him!”

Mr. Trump also addressed the pope’s death in brief remarks later on Monday morning before the White House Easter Egg Roll.

“He loved the world, and he especially loved people that were having a hard time — and that’s good with me,” Mr. Trump said, announcing that he was ordering flags at the White House and federal and military facilities to be flown at half-staff.

Asked if he agreed with the pope’s tolerance toward migrants, Mr. Trump said, “Yeah, I do.” But moments later, in response to a question about a legal case over his administration’s deportation of Venezuelan migrants, Trump railed against the “millions and millions” of migrants who have entered the United States.

After Mr. Trump’s first election, the two met — for the only time — at the Vatican in 2017. The photos quickly went viral. Standing side by side, the president smiled broadly as the pope appeared stern.

The Pope gave the president, a known skeptic of climate change, a set of English-language translations of his papal writings, including a 2015 encyclical on climate change.

Mr. Trump, seemingly star-struck, told reporters: “He is something. We had a fantastic meeting.”

But in 2018, Pope Francis condemned Mr. Trump’s separation of migrant children from their parents at the border with Mexico, calling the policy “immoral” and “contrary to our Catholic values.”

And in 2019, in another criticism of Mr. Trump’s immigration policy, the pope warned that those who close borders “will become prisoners of the walls that they build.”

The pope’s tone with Mr. Trump was markedly different from the one he had struck with former President Barack Obama, whose White House he visited and with whose goals he was often aligned, on issues including an easing of tensions with Cuba and the Iran nuclear deal.

The Obama-Francis relationship had symbolized what many liberals believed was the coming of a progressive era on the world stage.

“There was a meeting of minds,” said John Kerry, Mr. Obama’s secretary of state, who met repeatedly with Pope Francis. “The pope had enormous admiration for President Obama’s journey and what he represented and his efforts as a peacemaker.”

That sense of overlapping missions allowed Democrats to claim the pope as one of their own — even if they didn’t agree on every issue, including abortion rights and same-sex marriage. But it also set the stage for Republican backlash and for the conflict with Mr. Trump, who aggressively courted disgruntled conservative Catholics.

“For Donald Trump, Pope Francis looked like an enemy because he’s been friendly with Obama and with Biden,” said Steven P. Millies, the director of the Bernardin Center at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and an expert on the Catholic church’s relationship to politics. “There was not going to be much chance of a personal relationship between Pope Francis and Donald Trump. What we can call personal tensions have been visible very publicly.”

Indeed, after Joseph R. Biden Jr. won the White House, becoming America’s second Catholic president, the Pope called him “to tell me how much he appreciated the fact that I would focus on the poor and focus on the needs of people are in trouble,” Mr. Biden later recounted.

And in a visit to the Vatican in 2021, after U.S. bishops had advanced a proposal that would deny Mr. Biden communion for his support of abortion rights, Mr. Biden said the pope had told him that he was happy that Mr. Biden was a “good Catholic.”

By contrast, when Mr. Biden decided to not seek re-election in 2024 and Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee, the pope advised Catholic voters to choose the “lesser of two evils” because “both are against life” — Ms. Harris for her support for abortion rights, and Mr. Trump for closing the door to immigrants.

“Sending migrants away, not allowing them to grow, not letting them have life is something wrong; it is cruelty,” Francis said. “Sending a child away from the womb of the mother is murder because there is life. And we must speak clearly about these things.”

Mr. Trump’s re-election in November again put the two leaders’ starkly contrasting values in opposition. As Mr. Trump promised to elevate conservative Christian values in America, Pope Francis, whom Catholics view as God’s representative on earth, escalated his criticism.

In January, the pope said in an interview on Italian television that it would be a “disgrace” if Mr. Trump went forward with plans to intensify immigration enforcement. In February, the pope issued an unusual open letter to America’s Catholic bishops denouncing mass deportations and predicting that the policy would “end badly.”

“I exhort all the faithful of the Catholic Church,” he wrote, “not to give in to narratives that discriminate against and cause unnecessary suffering to our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters.”

The letter, written just days before the pope was hospitalized, also offered an apparent rebuttal to Vice President JD Vance’s interpretation of a Catholic teaching that he had used to defend the administration’s deportation policies.

Still, in the final hours of his life, the pope briefly welcomed Mr. Vance, a Catholic convert, into his residence for an Easter greeting. Soon after, he went to the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where an aide read aloud what would be the pontiff’s final public message.

“How much contempt is stirred up at times towards the vulnerable, the marginalized, and migrants!” he said.

No Chinese is working for me; go to court if you have evidence

Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the owner of Akonta Mining Limited Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the owner of Akonta Mining Limited

Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the owner of Akonta Mining Limited, has denied a report by journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor, that his company is involved with some chinese illegal miners.

“Many of the Chinese criminals who were making the river dirty told us on camera that they were working for Akonta Mining”, Erastus Asare Donkor wrote on his Facebook.

His comment comes on the back of allegations by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, who also took to his Facebook page to associate Akonta Mining with the illegal mining activities of the chinese nationals reportedly arrested by Ghana Police Service.

“On the eve of Good Friday, just after wrapping up my working visit to the Ashanti Region, I joined an intelligence led Ghana Police Service personnel on behalf of the Forestry Commission Ghana in a raid of about six (6) illegal mining sites allegedly belonging to AKONTA MINING (which is believed to belong to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP popularly known as Chairman Wontumi) in Samreboi, Western North Region.

The exercise resulted in the arrest of 6 Chinese, 2 Koreans and 18 Ghanaians. A total of 8 excavators were also taken and some 5 abandoned at their locations due to mobility challenge”, Elikem Kotoko alleged.

In response, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly called Chairman Wontumi, refuted Elikem Kotoko’s allegations stating “I have no idea who the illegal miners arrested by the police are and I am committed to protecting the environment of Ghana through legal mining despite Akonta Mining Limited not being in operation for some time now”.

Although Chairman Wontumi has set the record straight, Erastus Asare Donkor’s assertion on Facebook, to him, cannot go unresponded to.

Wontumi has therefore challenged the journalist to provide evidence backing his claim and admonished him not to assume himself to be a “social media hero”.

Antwi Boasiako reiterated that “no chinese man is working for me”.

“I am not working; I have stopped working for a very long time. So, I am challenging Erastus, if he claims he has arrested anybody who has been caught engaging in illegal mining and claims is working for Akonta, he should send the person to court”, he remarked on Wontumi Radio

He added; “I am challenging him. Akonta Mining is a legal mining company but the only thing is that we are not working. We have all the documents just like AngloGold and others have.”

How next Pope will be chosen and why Palmer-Buckle says Cardinal Turkson election would be great honour for Ghana

0

Pope Francis has died at the age of 88. The Vatican announced that at 07:35 local time on Easter Monday the head of the Roman Catholic Church “returned to the house of the Father” at his residence, Casa Santa Marta. He was the first Latin American pope in the Church’s history.

Following tradition, the pontiff’s death was confirmed by the head of the Vatican’s health department and the cardinal chamberlain (camerlengo, in Italian) Kevin Joseph Farrell.

The Pope’s body will now be taken to his chapel for a private ceremony, in which it will be placed in a single coffin – a departure from the three nested coffins common in previous pontiffs’ funerals.

Pope Francis died of stroke and heart failure – Vatican says and releases final testament outlining burial wishes

There are currently 252 Catholic cardinals, but only 135 are eligible to cast ballots in selecting the next Pope as those over the age of 80 can take part in debate but cannot vote.

135 cardinals are under the age of 80, which makes them eligible to select Pope Francis’s successor.

Once Francis is buried, the dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, has 15 to 20 days to summon the cardinals to Rome.

Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) following the death of Pope Francis has urged the church in Ghana to pray and prepare hearts for the election of his successor.

In a statement, the Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, the Catholic Bishop of Sunyani and President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, asked for prayers as the church mourns “our beloved Holy Father and as we prepare our hearts for the election of his successor.”

In a television interview with Accra-based TV3 and in his tribute to Pope Francis, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, Most Reverend Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle described Pope Francis as a towering moral voice whose legacy transcended religious boundaries.

He indicated Pope Francis was not only a preacher but someone who fully lived out his convictions.

“Pope Francis did not only preach; he lived what he believed,” he remarked, praising the late pontiff’s efforts to promote environmental responsibility, interfaith harmony, and human dignity.

Cardinal Turkson: Ghana’s hopeful

And as the Cardinals prepare to go into conclave to select the next Pope, Most Rev Palmer-Buckle suggested that Ghana’s Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson could be a strong candidate.

“He is of the right age, with immense experience, having served in key roles at the Vatican… If the Cardinals see him fit, we will support him  with our prayers. His election would be a great honour for Ghana.”

Still, he noted, the final decision rests with the College of Cardinals and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

“Let’s leave it to the Lord to show us who the next Pope should be,” he said, calling on Catholics worldwide to join in prayerful reflection.

How next Pope will be chosen

During the conclave, the cardinals live in the House of St Martha, a five-story guesthouse with 106 suites, 22 single rooms and a state apartment. Pope Francis lived in suite 201 during his papacy.

The cardinals will walk along the Via delle Fondamenta every day to the Sistine Chapel, where the conclave happens. All conversations with outsiders are forbidden during this period.

The faithful gather in St Peter’s Square during the conclave, waiting for the moment when the smoke comes out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.

Choosing the pontiff

Papal conclaves are notoriously difficult to predict because the election process is shrouded in so much secrecy. Once they enter the Sistine Chapel, they must have no communication with the outside world until a new Pope is elected.
The only people admitted in the chapel and in the guesthouse are doctors, confessors, masters of ceremonies, cooks, and cleaning staff. But they are also bound to secrecy about anything concerning the conclave.

“Unlike other world governments, these men are not aligned with any particular political parties so one never knows exactly what their priorities are, where they stand on controversial issues and what they will have top of mind when they cast their ballot. All of it adds up to a lot of intrigue and very little certainty,” says the BBC’s Davide Ghiglione in Rome.

The cardinals may take some inspiration from the frescos and artwork of Michelangelo inside the Sistine Chapel.

Karim Zito arrives in Kumasi to takeover Asante Kotoko coaching job

0

Dreams FC head coach Abdul Karim Zito has touched down safely in Kumasi to takeover the vacant Asante Kotoko coaching role following the jettisoning of Prosper Narteh Ogum

The Educationist has been sacked by the Porcupine Warriors in what is mainly described as poor performance and a final decision was arrived earlier today after a crunchy meeting held by the club’s interim management committee

With this, Karim Zito is retuning to Asante Kotoko where he’s already served as a player and was part of the club’s CAF Champions League winning team in 1983 and as a coach as well, and is expected to replace Ogum, per wide range of reliable reports.

Prosper Narteh Ogum, who guided the Porcupine Warriors to the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League title, leaves behind a mixed legacy. His first stint brought an end to Kotoko’s long title drought and was hailed as a major achievement.

However, recent performances have cast a shadow over his return, with the team failing to maintain consistency in the ongoing campaign.

A poor run of results, including back-to-back defeats against Accra Lions and Nations FC, intensified speculation around Ogum’s future.

In 28 league matches this season under Ogum, Kotoko recorded 13 wins, 8 draws, and 7 defeats, scoring 28 goals and conceding 21, with an average of 1.68 points per game.

The club expressed its appreciation to Coach Ogum for his commitment and service, and extended its best wishes for his future endeavors.

Arab world pays tribute to Pope Francis

Lebanon’s Christian President Joseph Aoun described the pope’s death as “a loss for all humanity, for he was a powerful voice for justice and peace.”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the pope was a “faithful friend of the Palestinian people,” according to official Palestinian news agency WAFA.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II said: “Deepest condolences to our Christian brothers and sisters around the world. Pope Francis was admired by all as the Pope of the People. He brought people together, leading with kindness, humility, and compassion. His legacy will live on in his good deeds and teachings.”

The Muslim Council of Elders, headed by Egypt’s Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayyeb, said Francis “devoted his life to serving humanity and advancing the values of dialogue, tolerance, coexistence, peace and human fraternity while he also tirelessly supported the vulnerable, needy, refugees and the displaced.”

He became “a historic religious figure whose enduring humanitarian legacy will inspire future generations,” the group said in a statement on X.

Lebanon’s pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement described the pope as “a believer in peace, a voice against war,” who “worked with deep faith to plant the values of love, tolerance, and bridge-building between religions, civilizations, and peoples in pursuit of dialogue, understanding, and justice.”

Palestinian extremist group Hamas said Francis “had well-known positions in promoting interfaith dialogue, calling for understanding and peace among nations, and rejecting hatred and racism”.

2 pump action guns, 30 excavators recovered in Akonta Mining raid

0

A joint anti-galamsey taskforce has recovered two pump action guns, 30 excavators, and other equipment during a raid on six mining sites linked to Akonta Mining Limited.

The operation was conducted on April 17, 2025, at Samreboi, in the Ashanti Region.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, during a press briefing on April 21, 2025, indicated that they embarked on the operation after they got a tip-off about the activities of Akonta Mining in the restricted forest in the enclave.

“Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (17th April 2025) an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining,” he said.

The minister has since revoked the license of Akonta Mining Limited following the raid.

“The operation in Compartment 49, which began at 5 a.m. and lasted a whopping 12 hours, resulted in:

* 51 arrests (8 Chinese, 39 Ghanaian men, 4 Ghanaian women)

* Seizure of about 30 excavators, 5 recovered and impounded at the operation base

* 2 Pump-action guns loaded with 5 and 2 rounds of BB cartridges each, 1 single-barrel gun retrieved

* Confiscation of 2 Toyota Hilux pickups, 1 Toyota RAV4, 4 motorbikes, and a cache of mining equipment

“In light of the overwhelming evidence, I have authorized the Minerals Commission to take steps to revoke the lease of Akonta Mining Co. Ltd with immediate effect,” the speech added.

All suspects have been transported to Accra and are in custody pending prosecution.

PRESS BRIEFING BY HON. EMMANUEL ARMAH-KOFI BUAH, MINISTER FOR LANDS AND NATURAL RESOURCES, ON THE GOVERNMENT’S SUSTAINED FIGHT AGAINST ILLEGAL MINING (GALAMSEY)

Accra, April 21, 2025

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen of the press.

As you may recall from our previous engagements, this government, under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, remains unwavering in our commitment to eradicate the scourge of illegal mining—an environmental sin against humanity and, against God. We promised to carry the good people of Ghana along with periodic updates, and today, I am here to provide key developments in this fight.

Last month, we assured the nation that we would intensify efforts to trace the financiers and owners of the heavy-duty equipment used for illegal mining. Today, we are pleased to announce a significant breakthrough in this critical fight.

One of the most egregious cases we have uncovered involves Akonta Mining Company Ltd., a company legally registered and granted a government lease to mine responsibly off-reserve outside the forest.

The company, however, does not possess an entry permit into the forest reserve of the Samreboi enclave of the Western North Region. Yet, investigations reveal that Akonta Mining has flagrantly abused this lease.

In August 2022, the Forestry Commission, with the assistance of the Ghana Police, made some arrests of persons associated with Akonta Mining, encroaching on the forest reserves, specifically compartment 161. The docket was supposedly transferred to Accra for further action, and yet nothing was heard of the case.

This company has not only trespassed into protected reserves but has become a criminal syndicate, selling access of the Aboi Forest Reserve to illegal miners for a staggering GHC 300,000 per concession. Worse, these illegal miners operate under Akonta’s protection, devastating the River Tano and surrounding forests with impunity. They have encroached compartments 49 and 121 of the Tano Nimri forest reserve.

We gathered a team of investigators to go undercover to make enquiries about the details of this operation. Our undercover team uncovered a well-oiled machinery of destruction:

One Mr. Ayisi (a representative of Akonta Mining) is the liaison on these dealings – he serves as the gatekeeper, negotiating fees and granting illegal access.

The concessions are then subleased to individuals like one “Mr. Henry” and another individual identified as “Shark” who are to oversee the devastation of the Aboi Forest Reserve and the Tano River.

As part of the agreement between Akonta Mining and the illegal miners, weekly royalties of 250 grams of gold are to be paid to the company, lining the pockets of Akonta’s collaborators.

Another heartbreaking revelation is that this criminal enterprise thrives because of the active collusion and connivance of some forestry officers and some security personnel. Here is how it works – Part of the GHC 300,000 fee goes to Akonta Mining, a portion goes to Mr. Henry, Shark, and their cohorts, and another portion goes to the forestry and security officials, according to investigators. These officers take a cut as a service charge in exchange for protection and tip-offs in the event of an impending raid.

There is no control over the activities of these illegal miners whatsoever. They continue to destroy with impunity, knowing that they are operating under the cover of the lease of Akonta Mining Company Ltd

Some interviews conducted with a few residents indicate that the modus operandi of Akonta Mining is to use force to enter and destroy even the farmlands and produce of poor farmers in the area.

Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (17th April 2025) an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.

The operation in Compartment 49, which began at 5 a.m. and lasted a whopping 12 hours, resulted in:

* 51 arrests (8 Chinese, 39 Ghanaian men, 4 Ghanaian women)

All suspects have been transported to Accra, in custody pending prosecution.

In light of the overwhelming evidence, I have authorized the Minerals Commission to take steps to revoke the lease of Akonta Mining Co. Ltd with immediate effect.

I have directed that forestry officials connected to these illegalities be immediately interdicted pending further investigations and prosecution. The security agencies have been notified to investigate security officers who have had dealings with Akonta Mining in this particular Forest Reserve.

The Attorney-General has also since been briefed and has taken over the investigations for further action.

Akonta Mining does not have a lease to mine in the Tano Nimiri Forest reserve, and their mining activities in the forest are illegal and criminal. And that, the Mahama government will stop at nothing to bring the company to book.

This is a warning to all large-scale mining concession holders hiding behind legal leases to fund the destruction of our forests and river bodies. We know some of your schemes – We are coming after you!

To the youth engaged in illegal mining: There is a better way. We stand ready to support you with better alternatives. But to those who persist in defiance, the state will act without mercy!

To the media and the Ghanaian people: Your vigilance is crucial. Report illegal mining activities, and trust that this government will act.

Let me be clear: We will not stop until galamsey is completely uprooted.

We will not stop until our waters run blue, we will not stop until our forests are turned green

We will not stop until the soul of our country is healed!

We will not stop until every financier, every enabler — the real architects of this destruction — will face the full rigors of the law.

We will name, shame, and prosecute them publicly.

Thank you. I will now take your questions.

Signed,

Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah

We will reduce the cost of borrowing

0

President John Dramani Mahama on Saturday assured businesses that the government will reduce the cost of borrowing by reforming credit systems and supporting blended finance instruments.

This is to stimulate economic growth and to help strengthen businesses and industries.

The President also announced that the government would retool the financial sector to serve the real economy, not just government borrowing or speculative trading.

President Mahama stated this in his opening remarks at the Second Edition of the Kwahu Business Forum at Mpraeso in the Kwahu South District of the Eastern Region.

The Kwahu Business Forum, which is the brainchild of President Mahama, is a major initiative to foster entrepreneurship and support the growth of Ghana’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

It is a direct response to the government’s vision of expanding Ghana’s private sector capacity, especially in the agro-processing and manufacturing sectors of the economy.

As a non-partisan national development agenda, the Kwahu Business Forum brings together business owners, industrialists, investors, start-ups, and major industry players to network, share experiences, and explore ways to raise capital or leverage available products from financial institutions.

The maiden forum, held during the 2024 Easter festivities at Mpraeso, the capital of Kwahu South District of the Eastern region, successfully brought together business magnates and young entrepreneurs who shared their experiences and expectations with the then-candidate John Mahama.

The Second Edition of the Kwahu Business Forum is on the theme “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector”.

“We will also launch a national venture capital fund to support youth- and women-led businesses, and introduce regulatory reforms that encourage banks and financial institutions to lend to productive sectors of the economy,” he said.

The president reiterated that financial inclusion would be at the heart of this agenda.

“No economy can grow if its people remain excluded from formal financial systems. We will work with banks, fintechs, and mobile money operators to expand access to financial services, particularly in rural and underserved communities.”

The president said the future of business in Ghana must be digital, green, and inclusive.

“We are entering logistics and public safety, for businesses to operate around the clock. This will boost an era where digital infrastructure is as important as roads and bridges,” he said.

President Mahama said as part of the Government’s 24-Hour Economy strategy, they would create the conditions through reliable electricity, productivity, create jobs, and expand opportunity across the country, stating that, however, transformation also requires skills.

This, he said, was why they were introducing a Jobs and Skills Compact—bringing together government, industry, and academia to align education and training with the needs of the job market.

President Mahama said the Government would provide incentives to companies that create sustainable, decent jobs and support youth entrepreneurship to unlock the creativity of the young people.

“Our vision is a Ghana where no young person needs to leave their hometown in search of opportunity. Where communities like Mpraeso, Nkawkaw, and Abetifi become hubs of innovation, enterprise, and decent work,” President Mahama said.

“To truly enable business growth, we must go beyond economic policy. It requires a firm commitment to the rule of law, political stability, and respect for contracts and property rights.”

President Mahama said it also required a responsive, corruption-free public service that would see the private sector not just as a revenue source, but as a development partner.

“That is why fora like this are essential. They allow us to listen, to engage, and to create policies that work. Your insights and innovations are critical to the national reset we envision,” the President said.

He noted that the future of Ghana would not be determined by the government alone; and that it would be determined by their ability to build partnerships between the state and private sector, between finance and innovation, and between leadership and the people.

“The Kwahu Business Forum is more than an event—it is a call to action. Let us work together to build a Ghana that is competitive, productive, and inclusive. A Ghana that creates opportunity for all,” the president stated.

Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, Kwahu Abetifihene and Adontenhene of Kwahu Traditional Area, urged Kwahu citizens to take advantage of the forum to have more businessmen and women from the area.

He appealed to President Mahama to complete the only Government Hospital project at the Kwahu Traditional Area, sited at Abetifi, which was started by his previous administration nine years ago, but came to a standstill following a change in government in 2017.

Adabraka Zongo community over the weekend emerged champions of the 10th annual Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup in Accra, after defeating defending champions Ashaiman in the grand finale.

Adabraka, making only their third appearance in the prestigious Zongo community football tournament, displayed remarkable form, by eliminating three former champions of the competion; Mamobi, Kasoa and Ashaiman, who have between them, won 6 of the 9 previous editions.

Adabraka started their glorious by defeating Shukura 3:1 on penalties after draw 0:0 in the first round, to advance to the quarter finals.

In the quarter finals, they stunned hosts and former champions, Mamobi by defeating them 1:0. Adabraka showed their superiority again when they defeated another former champions, Kasoa 3:1 on penalties, after a goalless draw, to set up a dream final with Ashaiman.

Ashaiman, with their status as defending champions, drew a by in the preliminary stage, and in their opening match at the 2nd round, they defeated Tunga 3:1 on penalties after drawing 1:1 in normal time.

In the semi finals, Ashaiman defeated a very impressive Nsawam Zongo side 3:1 on penalties, following a tight goalless score in normal time to book another final appearance.

Ashaiman were aiming to win a record-extending 4th title, and after a 0:0 score in an exciting final watched by dignitaries, including Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, it moved to penalty shootout to determine the winner.

Ashaiman were on the cusp of retaining the trophy, after Adabraka missed in the initial set of the shootout. All Ashaiman needed to do was to score their final penalty, but they missed, giving a huge lifeline to Adabraka.

Adabraka ceased the golden, second opportunity, and kept their composure, this time, to emerge winners, and join the elite class of former winners of the competition, named after the eminent National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, assisted by the Chief Protocol Officer at the Office of the National Chief Imam, presented the glittering trophy and medals to the champions.

The trophy and medals were donated by Black Stars players, Mohammed Kudus and Kamaldeen Suleiman, while Ernest Nuamah, another Black Stars player, also donated two sets of jerseys, which were used by the two teams for the grand finale.

Founder of the tournament, Tamimu Issah, on behalf of the organisers, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including the media, for their support in making the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup one of the best community football tournaments in the country.

You don’t ask a woman ‘what she brings to the table?’

Prosper Boadu is a marriage counsellor Prosper Boadu is a marriage counsellor

A marriage counsellor, Prosper Boadu, has slammed men who tend to ask their potential partners “what are you bringing to the table?”

He argued that a man should already know a woman’s value before pursuing marriage.

In a discussion on Max TV, Boadu insisted that men should be capable of deciding if their partners are the right fit for them before marriage to avoid asking such a question.

“You have to know why you are bringing her into your life. You bring her when you have done your assessment and determined that she suits the agenda you are pursuing. It is not when you have married her that you are asking ‘what are you bringing to the table?’ You should have known that before even marrying her,” he said.

Referencing the biblical story of Adam, who was already tasked with tending the Garden of Eden before Eve became his companion, Boadu emphasised that men should have clear goals before involving a woman in their lives.

“A man without vision or purpose has no business bringing a woman into his life because she is there to assist him in his goals,” he stated.

The counselor also questioned why schools don’t teach relationship and marriage skills, calling it a critical life decision that should be learned by all.

“These are important decisions. Why do we teach people how to be husbands and wives? Mothers and fathers? Because most people don’t know,” he argued.

I want a private jet next

Owner of Chez Amis Restaurant, Big Cheezy Owner of Chez Amis Restaurant, Big Cheezy

Celebrity chef and business mogul, Belinda “Big Cheezy” Amis, has disclosed that the latest purchase of her custom purple Rolls-Royce Cullinan was a lifelong dream for her.

The owner of the popular Chez Amis Restaurant recently set social media ablaze after acquiring a custom purple Rolls-Royce Cullinan said to be worth over $450,000, becoming what many believe to be Ghana’s first female owner of the luxury vehicle.

In an exclusive interview with Nkonkonsa, Big Cheezy stated; “It’s been my dream car. Even before Rolls-Royce made the Cullinan, I knew I’d own one.”

She added, “I don’t really like sedans, so when I started my culinary business, this became my target.”

When asked about what was next for her, the restaurateur stated, “A private jet with ‘Chezzy’ on it.”

She further advised her followers and other aspiring entrepreneurs to prioritise hard work and determination.

“Don’t be ashamed of your hustle. Whether it’s pure water or Indomie, sell it with pride. I wasn’t ashamed to sell tilapia by the roadside. Even now, I still serve meals at my restaurant. What men can do, women can do better; it’s about hard work,” he said.

The car joins her existing fleet of a Mercedes SUV and a Toyota Prado. To doubters, she had a blunt message: “They will be okay.”

This is not the first time Big Cheezy has captivated public attention with her lavish spending.

In 2023, she reportedly splurged GH¢200,000 at an exclusive All-Black Party in Kumasi and acquired three high-end properties in a single year, including a 5-bedroom mansion at Airport Hills.

You are ‘lying’- Akonta Mining CEO responds to Armah Kofi Buah over illegal mining allegations

File photo of an illegal mining activity File photo of an illegal mining activity

The owner of Akonta Mining Limited, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, has responded squarely to a palpable lie being told by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah in an attempt to link his company to illegal mining.

The minister is also on record to have stated that Akonta Mining has also been illegally selling concessions within the Aboi Forest to unauthorised miners for up to GH¢300,000, and in some cases, in exchange for gold royalties.

To resolve the mystery being created by the minister, Mr. Antwi-Boasiako advised the minister to take the issue to court.

“I challenge them that this is a lie, I haven’t given anything to anybody, so the best place to go is the court”, he said.

Bernard Antwi-Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi stated that he hasn’t also authorized the sale of any concession within the Aboi Forest to any miner and is challenging Armah Kofi Buah to show Ghanaians evidence of his allegation.

“Your allegation is not true”, Chairman Wontumi said and maintained his innocence stating that “I have never worked in the forest before. I am challenging you that it is not true. Anybody claiming to have given me money should come and prove it”.

On the issue of revocation of his mining licence, Chairman Wontumi told the minister that “you can’t use allegations to revoke my incense”.

“I have never gone there to mine”, Chairman Wontumi told Wontumionline.com when asked about the Aboi Forest.

“I have never been to Aboi forest. I don’t work there. I don’t have licence there. Forestry Commission is responsible for the forest not me so they should be asked.

In 2023, the Minerals Commission and minister directed the Forestry Commission to take charge of the place. I never stepped my foot there”, he added.

Private sector central to economic growth – Free Zones Authority Deputy CEO

Correspondence from Eastern Region

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Lateef Apau Wiredu, has underscored the importance of positioning the private sector at the core of Ghana’s economic development agenda.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Kwahu Business Forum launch—an initiative by the government to leverage the Easter festivities in Kwahu to stimulate economic activity—Mr. Wiredu emphasized that while the celebrations are known for merry-making, the region is also home to many prominent business figures.

“The forum recognises the entrepreneurial spirit of the Kwahu people. Their contributions to employment and economic development cannot be overlooked,” he stated.

He explained that the Kwahu Business Forum is not exclusive to the region but rather serves as a national platform to promote private sector-led growth. Initiatives such as the 24-hour economy and the One Million Cadres programme are examples of government policies aimed at empowering businesses.

According to Wiredu, the forum addressed key challenges facing businesses, particularly in the areas of finance and management. It also created a platform for entrepreneurs to voice their concerns and propose solutions.

Highlighting the role of the Free Zones Authority, he noted that the organization’s core mandate is to attract both local and foreign investment through attractive incentives for export-driven businesses. Companies operating under the Free Zones scheme are required to export at least 70% of their production, with the remaining 30% allowed for local consumption.

He added that businesses under the scheme enjoy duty-free import and export of raw materials and products, as well as a 10-year corporate tax exemption, enabling them to operate at a lower cost compared to non-Free Zone enterprises.

Commenting on U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed 10% tariff on exports to the United States, Mr. Wiredu warned that such a move could significantly burden Ghanaian exporters and affect the country’s foreign exchange earnings

Kwabena Agyepong proposes bold reforms to deepen NPP’s internal democracy

0

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has tabled a set of sweeping constitutional reforms aimed at promoting inclusivity, strengthening grassroots participation, and enhancing transparency within the party’s internal electoral processes.

Speaking at the second quarter meeting of the NPP National Executive Committee (NEC) held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, Mr. Agyepong outlined three major proposals he believes are essential for positioning the party on a stronger democratic foundation as it prepares for future leadership contests.

A youth-led push to reshape a nation’s future

0

Ghana’s Moment of Reckoning — The Time to Rise

Ghana stands at a momentous crossroads. Once the pride of West Africa and the beating heart of Pan-African democratic optimism, the country now wades through economic ruin, civic disillusionment, and institutional breakdown. But even amid despair, a spark remains: the youth. The restless dreamers, the digital warriors, the emerging nation-builders who see beyond tribalism and partisanship — they are the living symbols of Ghana’s renaissance.

This generation of young Ghanaians refuses to inherit a broken future. They are calling for a total reset — not a revision, not a recycling of old ideas — but a complete, strategic, and moral overhaul. Resetting Ghana is no longer just a vision; it is a national mission — one which must begin with a bold and incorruptible leadership at the helm.

“A true reset in this 4th Republic must rise above the tired rituals of traditional political recycling and confront, with fearless precision, the toxic ‘father-for-all’ syndrome that has deeply wounded our institutions. We cannot liberate Ghana with the same complicit hands that chained her dreams.

This is a clarion call to rise — not with timidity or transactional loyalty — but with a Pan-African boldness that puts country above cronies, integrity above inheritance, and truth above tribe. Resetting Ghana demands that we choose courage over comfort, vision over vagueness, and sacrifice over self-preservation. This is not an era for petty skirmishes — it is the sacred season for generational leadership and sovereign rebirth.”

Why Reset? Why Now?

Ghana’s economic woes are not born of natural disaster but of a systematic human “LEADERSHIP” failure. Decades of corruption, impunity, and bad governance have left the state gasping for air. The once-celebrated institutions — the judiciary, the civil service, the electoral commission — now stagger under the weight of lost credibility.

The youth unemployment rate is nearing 20% (Ghana Statistical Service, 2023), while inflation, public debt, and institutional decay persist. This isn’t just a dip; this is a downward spiral — unless we intervene boldly.

Why reset now? Because delay is a silent betrayal. The youth do not have time to waste — they must inherit a nation worth leading. Resetting Ghana is about realigning the moral compass, restructuring state architecture, and reclaiming public trust, and the youth must be its engine.

H.E. John Dramani Mahama: A Glimmer of Hope in the Rubble

At the center of this national awakening stands John Dramani Mahama — not as a messiah, but as a strategic enabler of a brighter tomorrow. His Transformation Agenda is more than a policy blueprint — it is a battle cry for generational empowerment.

Mahama’s return offers hope precisely because he understands failure, resilience, and reform. He must not be a father to all, but a leader to the righteous. Ghana is not in need of political courtesy; it needs strategic disruption.

The “father for all syndrome” is no longer a virtue — it is a political crime against progress. If the Resetting Ghana Agenda is to succeed, then all CEOs, top-level functionaries, and political appointees of the failed NPP administration must be immediately removed. They represent a decayed system that Ghanaians have rejected. Allowing them to persist under a new government would smother hope, mock the electorate, and give the NPP ghost power in the very house they destroyed.

Let it be clear: resetting is not the popular traditional recycling of political events. This moment demands courage, not comfort.

Eradicating Inherited Corruption and Institutional Toxicity

Ghana’s public institutions have been weaponised against justice. From the judiciary’s silence on blatant executive abuse to the Electoral Commission’s loss of public trust, the state is riddled with institutional rot.

As the initiator of the Resetting Ghana Agenda, John Mahama must act swiftly and surgically. His government must utilize standing executive powers to remove the current Chief Justice and the Electoral Commissioner — not out of vengeance, but as a strategic cleansing to restore faith in Ghana’s democracy. These positions are too pivotal to be held by individuals whose tenure tarnishes the very soul of justice and democracy.

Additionally, all unresolved corruption cases under the previous administration must be vigorously investigated and prosecuted. The Reset cannot be cosmetic. It must be deep, deliberate, and demonstrative.

Tackling Galamsey: The Test of Political Will

Among the toughest battles Mahama must face is the galamsey crisis — a menace that has mutilated Ghana’s environment, eroded rural economies, and exposed the fragility of political enforcement.

Illegal mining is not just an environmental issue; it is a test of leadership integrity. To defeat galamsey, the Mahama-led NDC must deploy a military-grade response, backed by community intelligence, digitized land tracking, and most importantly, political courage. If elites continue to benefit from environmental destruction, the Reset will be a lie.

This is where the youth must rise — as whistleblowers, as innovators offering green alternatives, and as custodians of Ghana’s forests, rivers, and dignity.

Building A First-World Ghana: The Agenda for the Future

Mahama’s Transformation Agenda must go beyond economic stabilization. It must be futuristic, youth-led, and globally competitive.

Digital Ghana: A 10-year blueprint for a smart economy, driven by AI, blockchain, green tech, and youth-run startups.

Made-In-Ghana Industrialization: Targeting agro-processing, automotive assembly, and export-oriented manufacturing zones with youth at the center.

Education Reset: A complete reform of curricula to promote skills, ethics, and enterprise — not just degrees.

Youth Employment Corps: A national civic service model combining technology, agriculture, and infrastructure, giving jobs and purpose to millions.

Diaspora Investment Summit: A targeted $5 billion diaspora capital in fusion through structured public-private vehicles.

Conclusion: Rise, Youth of Ghana — The Nation Awaits You

This is not just another administration. This is the rebirth of a nation.

If the Mahama-led NDC government truly intends to reset Ghana, then the decisions must be swift, strategic, and surgical. The failed elements of the old regime must be swept out, and a new order of integrity, merit, and youth inclusion must rise. The Resetting Ghana Agenda is not for the faint-hearted. It is for the bold, the visionary, and the disciplined.

To the youth: this is your revolution — peaceful, productive, and unstoppable.

“If the youth will rise, Ghana will rise. If the youth will dream, Ghana will awaken. And if the youth will lead, Ghana will be reborn.”

Zongo chiefs laud strategic government appointments under Mahama administration

0

Greater Accra Hausa Youth Leader, Alhaji Salisu Maude Greater Accra Hausa Youth Leader, Alhaji Salisu Maude

The Zongo communities have expressed deep appreciation for the strategic appointments made by President John Dramani Mahama, highlighting what they see as a deliberate effort to include Zongo indigenes in high-level positions within government.

Alhaji Salisu Maude, Greater Accra Hausa Youth Leader, acknowledged that the swift and significant representation of their people under the Mahama-led administration was both unprecedented and a powerful symbol of respect and inclusion.

Recent appointments in vital sectors such as Petroleum and Energy, the National Identification Authority, and the Youth Employment Agency have drawn particular praise. Community leaders argue these roles are not merely symbolic but represent a calculated effort to place qualified individuals from Zongo communities in positions that directly influence national policy and socio-economic development.

Speaking in a recent interview, Alhaji Maude, who also serves as President of the Zongo Youth Dialogue with Police Project, emphasised the broader impact of these appointments.

“We see these appointments as more than political gestures,” he said. “They reflect a long-overdue recognition of the capabilities within our community—especially among the youth. It’s a step toward true national integration.”

Among the appointments that have generated the most enthusiasm are Halimatu Sadia Abdulai as Deputy Chief Executive Officer at the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, Alhaji Mohammed Nazeer as Deputy CEO of the National Identification Authority, and Abdulwahab Jawando as Public Relations Officer at the National Youth Employment Agency.

“These are not token roles,” Alhaji Maude stressed. “They are leadership positions that demand trust, expertise, and accountability. It is a clear testament to the confidence President Mahama has in the Zongo community.”

He concluded by noting that, “given the vast talent within Zongo communities and their growing socio-political contributions, more appointments are expected in the near future—including representation on the boards of key national institutions.”

Some political analysts and journalists believe this level of engagement could have lasting effects on national cohesion and democratic participation, particularly as Zongo communities continue to represent a dynamic, yet historically under-represented, segment of Ghana’s political and civic space.

As national conversations around equity and inclusive governance continue, many are pointing to the Mahama administration’s track record with Zongo communities as a model for what thoughtful, merit-based appointments can achieve in bridging social and political divides.

Journalism or Junk?: BBC Africa Eye’s reckless misfire on Ghana’s opioid crisis

0

West Africa is in the throes of an opioid crisis, one that is shredding the social fabric of communities from Kano to Tamale. These synthetic substances, particularly Tafrodol, Timaking,

Super Tafrodol, Tafrodol X225 and Super Royal 225, have turned border towns into micro- epicentres of addiction, smuggling, and mental health collapse.

But to confront this plague, we must begin with the truth. Not just compelling narratives. Not cinematic drone shots or haunting voiceovers. But the hard, ugly, inconvenient truth.

That’s precisely where the recent BBC Africa Eye documentary, “India’s Opioid Kings- BBC Africa Eye Documentary- ‘ Who is flooding West Africa with Dangerous Opioids?”, loses the plot. The Accusation Without Forensics In its bid to locate a Ghanaian “kingpin,” the BBC Africa Eye named a legitimate pharmaceutical distributor as a central actor in the opioid flood into Ghana. However, the investigation did not follow the typical forensic rigour associated with award-winning journalism. It did not: • Audit the supply chain from Indian export manifests to Ghana’s port declarations • Investigate the clearing and declaring agents involved at the Ports • Track shipment trails from the port to licensed (or unlicensed) warehouses • Review financial transactions, email correspondence, or telecom metadata • Test for criminal impersonation, a prevalent modus operandi in Ghana’s logistics sector Instead, the BBC Africa Eye drew a direct line between “legitimate importer” and “opioid trafficking” without answering this basic question:

What kind of criminal smuggles drugs under their real business name, registers with the FDA, files tax, builds a digital platform, with websites and addresses leading right to their doorstep whiles at it?

Even street-level dealers know better than to buy weed with their ID cards. So why would a criminal enterprise run its operations in broad daylight? A Trail of Seizures… but No Link Let’s look at the facts. Since the documentary aired on February 21, 2025, Ghanaian authorities have intercepted multiple opioid shipments, a few of the most recent below:

1. February 11 – Tamale: 450 boxes of illicit cigarettes and five boxes of Tapentadol, worth over GH₵20.6 million 2. March – Tema Port: Opioids and other controlled substances valued at GH₵20 million intercepted by Customs These busts are concrete. They are traceable. But here’s the real question: If the Ghanaian company named by the BBC Africa Eye was indeed the kingpin, why haven’t any of these busts been linked to them? No arrests. No sanctions. No warehouses raided. No follow-up headlines. Just noise. The Dangerous Oversight of Criminal Impersonation The named company pointed to possible criminal impersonation, a deeply plausible explanation in Ghana’s loose regulatory space, where documents are cloned and used by third-party actors to run shell operations. That thread was simply ignored. In a February 26th,2025 Press Release of the Food and Drug Authority, Ghana, in response to the BBC Africa Eye “dis-Expose”, FDA/CSD/CPE/PRS/25/003 dubbed: “FDA RESPONDS TO BBC AFRICA EYE INVESTIGATION: WHO IS FLOODING WEST AFRICA WITH OPIOIDS?”, the FDA states, they were contacted and unequivocally confirmed that these drugs were unapproved and illegal for importation. They further listed concrete results of their longstanding enforcement efforts against the illegal importation of unregistered drugs and substances of abuse, including Tramadol, Trafanol, Tarapamol, and Tramaking and the fact that through their rigorous surveillance, the FDA has imposed fines, seized illicit drugs, and ensured their safe disposal. In that same release, under actions they had taken, they listed several swoops and busts in collaboration with the National Security, Narcotics Control Commission, Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division), Bureau of National Investigations, and other agencies, resulting in below: 1. On December 18, 2023, a container (MRKU 9648934) declared for transit to Nemin, Niger, found to contain 181 cartons of Royal 225mg (Tapentadol and Carisoprodol),51 cartons of Timaking 120mg (Tapentadol and Carisoprodol), and 90 cartons of Tafradol 120mg which were seized and disposed of following a court order dated January 16, 2025, with destruction completed on February 21, 2025. 2. In May 2024, 376 cartons of Tramadol Hydrochloride 225mg (Tramaking 225mg) were intercepted concealed among 50 cartons of laboratory coverall suits, which were safely disposed of in October 2024. 3. Through sustained surveillance, the FDA had confiscated approximately 287,011 units of Tramadol in varying strengths from 50mg to 225mg, 8,576 units of Trafadol, and 2,053 units of Tramaking at different border posts, over-the-counter medicine sellers (OTCMS), and from hawkers. It’s worth underscoring that none of these records tie the so-called ‘kingpin’ company to any proven role in Ghana’s opioid trade, nor has it faced regulatory sanctions, fines, or prosecution before/after the documentary.

Someone would have mentioned them; a trail, however remote, would have led to them if indeed they were as they’ve been made by the “dis-expose”

When the question of whether the FDA knew the mentioned Ghanaian company in the “dis-Exposé”,

the FDA acknowledged the company as a licensed importer of injections and eye drops from FDA- vetted Indian manufacturers, none of which is Aveo Pharmaceuticals, the supplier named in the

exposé. However, still, citing ICUMS data from 2022–2023, they linked Aveo and Westfin as exporters to the named company for approved medications, but ordered ties with them to be cut off. The FDA claim doesn’t point to opioids, albeit misleading, but predictable, as the ICUMS data on which the FDA depends is notoriously opaque. The BBC Africa Eye failed to investigate whether clearing agents or shadow companies were using the firm’s FDA license or documentation without authorisation. A real exposé would have pulled that thread back to the docks. A Contradiction of Ethics Even more damning is the editorial contradiction at the end of the documentary. The narrator claims the Ghanaian company “wouldn’t have been friendly even if they approached them.” Then, in the credits, the same company is said to have “responded and denied the allegations.” So, which is it?

Were they uncooperative, or did the BBC Africa Eye not like the answers they provided in an earlier email correspondence?

This is the kind of ambiguity that erodes public trust and turns real journalism into scripted theatre.

If investigative journalism were held to the rigour of the scientific method, the BBC Africa Eye exposé would collapse under the weight of peer review. But in the court of public sentiment, where emotion often eclipses evidence, especially amidst the heartbreak of youth lost to addiction, the narrative finds traction. It exploits collective grief to cast a legitimate and ethical business as the villain.

The Regulatory Abyss Ghana’s regulatory landscape also shoulders blame. The Food and Drugs Authority, Ghana (FDA) and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority have presided over a “broken chain”: • Weak centralised real-time system for tracking controlled imports

• Weak biometric verification of importers or declaring agents • Opaque licensing processes, with weak surveillance post-clearance • Lack of whistleblower protection, leading to a culture of silence After the exposé, the FDA responded by suspending imports and directing importers to avoid flagged exporters. Necessary, yes. But far too late. What must change? 1. Digitise and interlink port, customs, and FDA clearance systems 2. Audit all controlled substance imports retroactively for 36 months 3. Implement real-time traceability tools (even blockchain-based if needed) 4. Impose criminal liability on clearing agents found facilitating misdeclarations 5. Create a cross-border task force for pharmaceutical trafficking intelligence

The FDA stands still as storms gather. Perhaps it is time it listened to the winds from Ridge, where the Bank of Ghana, for all its cracks, still guards the gate with firmer hands

The Real Opportunity the BBC Africa Eye Missed The opioid crisis is deadly, and it deserves journalism as relentless in pursuit of truth as the traffickers are in the quest for profit The BBC had the brand, the reach, surely the budget and the responsibility to dig deeper, but lacked either the will or the skilled human resource capacity to dig into the alleys of procurement fraud, the ports that look the other way, and the dark networks laundering these drugs through public systems. Instead, it opted for the comfort of proximity journalism, zeroing in on the most visible actor, conveniently framed as the villain, while the true networks of complicity slipped quietly into the shadows.

When there’s no effort to hide the evidence, it’s not transparency—it’s a setup. Question the motive

This isn’t just a missed opportunity. It’s a disservice to the very people the documentary claims to speak for.

The named company will not carry the burden of blame that has been so irresponsibly assigned. Setting the Record Straight: A Stand for Truth Amid Manufactured Noise Ghana does not need an unsolicited, sensationalised documentary to confront a crisis we have long acknowledged and actively battled. The Ghanaian company now at the centre of recent media scrutiny, along with its subsidiaries, has, for over four years, worked transparently with key national stakeholders, including the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana and the Ministry of Health, in direct and ongoing efforts to address the opioid crisis with both integrity and resolve. Through its award-winning health television program, this company has consistently championed public education on substance abuse, reaching thousands of viewers, raising critical awareness, and spotlighting the grim realities of addiction. Notably, dedicated episodes in Season 1 Episode 11 and Season 4 Episode 7, on substance abuse, aired as far back as March 2021 and August 2024, respectively, long before any headlines surfaced. Which begs the question:

Are they being targeted because they are arguably the only pharmaceutical marketing company running such a high-impact community programme, now in its fifth season, that educates users, reduces demand, and potentially undermines the market of the real traffickers?

To suggest that such a company is involved in drug trafficking is not only factually groundless, but it is a grave disservice to years of tireless advocacy, civic engagement, and grassroots health promotion. Let us be clear: the educational mission will not stop. The real question is not whether the problem exists, but how much longer we will allow our youth to be enslaved by addiction, while those working to protect them are vilified, without a shred of evidence. This is not merely a battle against opioids. It is a fight for truth, dignity, and the future of public health in Ghana. A fight is coming, and it won’t be pretty. But it is necessary. It is necessary to protect the future, ethical businesses that may one day find themselves scapegoated by powerful brands with opaque motives and questionable integrity. Ghana deserves better. Africa deserves better. Our youth deserve better. The truth deserves better #NoSignal An editorial channel for truth-seekers,system-rebuilders and signal breakers.

Watch lands minister weep after watching devastation caused by Akonta Mining Limited

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has been captured in a viral video shedding tears over the aftermath of mining activities by Akonta Mining Limited.

The caption that accompanied the video shared by GHOne’s X account on April 21, 2025, sought to suggest that he broke down in tears after watching a documentary showing the destruction of lands and water bodies in the Western Region by Akonta Mining Company Limited.

In a rather emotional scene, a man is seen approaching him to briefly console him with a gentle pat on the shoulder.

The minister, per a speech presented on April 21, 2025, has since revoked the license of Akonta Mining Limited.

“Some interviews conducted with a few residents indicate that the modus operandi of Akonta Mining is to use force to enter and destroy even the farmlands and produce of poor farmers in the area.

“Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (17th April 2025) an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining. In light of the overwhelming evidence, I have authorized the Minerals Commission to take steps to revoke the lease of Akonta Mining Co. Ltd with immediate effect,” a part of the speech said.

It would be recalled that on April 16, 2025, a joint military operation in Subri in the Western Region dismantled a massive illegal mining settlement which accommodated miscreants numbering over 2,000.

* 51 arrests (8 Chinese, 39 Ghanaian men, 4 Ghanaian women)

Kwabena Agyepong proposes constitutional reforms to NPP amendment committee

0

A former presidential candidate and senior campaign advisor to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections, Kwabena Agyepong has proposed constitutional reforms to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) amendment committee, led by Frank Davies

He has called for the scrapping of Article 13(9), which mandates the special electoral college to trim presidential aspirants to five, and has also proposed the formation of constituency caucuses.

“This proposal represents a limited enlargement of the electoral college, ensuring broader consultation and representation in key decision-making processes,” he stated.

MEMORANDUM

TO: NPP Constitution Amendment Committee
ATTENTION: Chairman, Frank Davies, Esq.
FROM: Kwabena Agyei Agyepong
DATE: 17th April, 2025
SUBJECT: Proposals for Constitutional Amendments

Following my submissions during the second quarter meeting of the NPP National Executive Committee held at Alisa Hotel on 16th April, 2025, I hereby officially present the proposals below for the committee’s consideration:

  1. Formation of Constituency Caucuses

It is proposed that the party establishes, in each of the 276 constituencies, a caucus comprising all current and past office holders of the party in the constituency. Specifically, this caucus shall include:

  • Members of Parliament
  • DCEs/MCEs
  • Constituency Executives
  • Electoral Area Coordinators
  • Polling Station Executives
  • Patrons
  • Elders

This proposal represents a limited enlargement of the electoral college, ensuring broader consultation and representation in key decision-making processes.

  1. Order of Presidential Primaries

To reduce tension associated with the numerous elections the party conducts ahead of the presidential candidate election, it is proposed that the presidential primaries be held first, following the amendment of the electoral college.

This approach aligns with Article 13(1) of the party’s current constitution and promotes a more logical and less contentious electoral timeline.

  1. Expulsion of Article 13(9)

It is further proposed that Article 13(9) of the constitution, which mandates the formation of a special electoral college to trim presidential aspirants to five (5), be expunged.

The current structure of this special college—comprising fewer than one thousand (1000) members—is susceptible to manipulation and undermines democratic fairness. A broader, more inclusive process is recommended.

Respectfully submitted for your kind consideration.

Akonta Mining licence revoked over alleged galamsey syndicate in forest reserve

0

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced the immediate revocation of all mining licences held by Akonta Mining Company Limited following what he described as “overwhelming evidence” of illegal mining and criminal syndication.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, April 21, 2025, the Minister disclosed that Akonta Mining, though legally registered and granted a lease to mine off-reserve, has been involved in egregious breaches of mining regulations, including operating illegally in protected forest reserves.

“This company has not only trespassed into protected reserves but has become a criminal syndicate, selling access to the Aboi Forest Reserve to illegal miners for a staggering GH₵300,000 per concession,” Mr Buah revealed. “Worse, these illegal miners operate under Akonta’s protection, devastating the River Tano and surrounding forests with impunity.”

According to the Minister, an undercover investigation uncovered a systematic illegal operation led by Akonta Mining, with company representatives allegedly negotiating illegal sub-leases. In exchange, weekly royalties of up to 250 grams of gold were reportedly paid back to Akonta by the illegal miners.

The findings also implicated forestry officers and security personnel in a widespread scheme that enabled the mining activities to continue unhindered. “Part of the GH₵300,000 fee goes to Akonta Mining, a portion goes to individuals identified as Mr Henry and ‘Shark,’ and another portion to some forestry and security officials who provide protection and tip-offs,” Mr Buah added.

He sad the investigation further revealed that Akonta Mining had encroached compartments 49 and 121 of the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, despite having no legal lease or entry permit to operate there.

An intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission on the eve of Good Friday (April 17) led to the raid of six illegal sites linked to the company. The 12-hour operation in Compartment 49 resulted in the arrest of 51 individuals — including eight Chinese nationals — and the seizure of heavy equipment and vehicles.

Recovered items included 30 excavators (five impounded), two pump-action guns, one single-barrel gun, two Toyota Hilux pickups, a Toyota RAV4, four motorbikes, and assorted mining equipment. All suspects have been transported to Accra and are currently in custody pending prosecution.

The Minister announced that he has authorised the Minerals Commission to revoke Akonta Mining’s lease immediately and directed that all implicated forestry officials be interdicted while further investigations proceed.

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Ayine, has since been briefed and has taken over the investigations.

“This is a warning to all large-scale mining concession holders hiding behind legal leases to fund the destruction of our forests and river bodies. We know some of your schemes — we are coming after you,” Mr Buah cautioned.

He added that the government remains committed to eradicating galamsey, describing it as an “environmental sin against humanity and against God.”

“To the youth engaged in illegal mining: there is a better way. We stand ready to support you with alternatives. But to those who persist in defiance, the state will act without mercy,” he warned.

The Minister concluded with a call for public vigilance and support: “Let me be clear: We will not stop until galamsey is completely uprooted. We will not stop until our waters run blue. We will not stop until our forests are turned green. We will not stop until every financier, every enabler — the real architects of this destruction — faces the full rigours of the law.”

2025 TGMAs: Stonebwoy told me to campaign for any musician who deserves Artiste of the Year

Ghanaian entertainment pundit, MC Portfolio, has explained the rationale behind his recent support for King Paluta ahead of the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

In an interview with Onua FM on April 21, 2025, MC Portfolio noted that there is no professional contract that restricts him from solely supporting Stonebwoy.

He explained that Stonebwoy had given him the go-ahead to support any artiste who I deem fit to win the Artiste of the Year in the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

“I don’t have any professional contract with Stonebwoy. After the TGMAs, I went to dinner with Stonebwoy and he told me that he liked how truthful I am and therefore if I realised that any artiste deserves an award in the coming years, I should campaign for the person,” he said.

MC Portfolio added that Stonebwoy doesn’t have any personal issues with him.

He added that the “Jejereje” hitmaker respects the achievements of other artistes, therefore, he isn’t bothered about the derogatory comments on social media.

“Anytime some of the Bhim natives give me a negative energy, I know that doesn’t represent Stonebwoy himself because he is a very transparent man. I have learned a lot.

“He is someone who respects the achievements of others, so, for someone who is that selfless to tell me that if I feel another artiste deserves the same awards I should campaign for the person, I don’t think he has issues with me,” he added.

To make looting legal isn’t justice – Barker-Vormawor declares full support for ORAL

Oliver Barker-Vormawor is the Convener of Fix the Country Oliver Barker-Vormawor is the Convener of Fix the Country

The convener of Fix the Country, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has declared his full commitment to fight any system that seeks to exploit the poor to the advantage of a privileged few.

Explaining the passion behind his advocacy for Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), he said that poverty is created by a class of people who exploit the system to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor.

In an emotional piece on his X account on April 20, 2025, the social activist recounted how his background feeds into his drive to fight for justice.

The legal practitioner recounted how he rose from the doldrums of poverty because his father’s situation left him no choice but to embrace knowledge acquisition at an early age to break the cycle of poverty in his family.

“Poverty is not fate. It is man-made. And we can fix it,” a part of his post on X read.

He expressed disgust for the class of people who exploit the system to their advantage while the masses wallow in poverty.

He reiterated his commitment to fight injustices by the affluent and powerful till equal opportunities abound for all people.

He consequently declared his full support for ORAL, as a means to combat any injustices that seek to keep people in lack and deprivation.

“Plunder can be made legal too. To make looting legal isn’t Justice,” he said.

He strongly also argued that he remains the voice of the poor and would go any length to ensure justice is served in creating the right environment for all people to thrive.

Elegant and Timeless Fashion Choices

0

Lace material has long been a symbol of elegance and femininity in fashion, and its timeless appeal continues to captivate designers and fashion enthusiasts alike. When used in gowns, lace can transform a simple design into an extraordinary statement piece. Whether it’s for a formal event, a wedding, or an evening soiree, lace gowns are the epitome of grace and sophistication. Below are some of the most popular gown styles for lace material.

The A-line silhouette is one of the most flattering gown styles, and when combined with lace, it offers an effortlessly chic look. The design gently skims the body from the waist to the hem, forming a classic “A” shape. A-line lace gowns can be adorned with delicate lace overlays, providing a soft, romantic feel. This style works beautifully for weddings, proms, or any formal occasion, providing both comfort and elegance.

For those who want to make a bold statement, the mermaid gown is the perfect choice. This style fits tightly through the bodice and hips, flaring out dramatically at the knee or lower. When crafted with lace, the mermaid gown offers a sexy yet sophisticated look, perfect for evening events or brides looking to turn heads on their wedding day. The intricate lace details can be placed at the hem or used as an all-over design, creating a stunning visual effect.

A sheath gown is designed to hug the body from top to bottom, creating a sleek and streamlined look. Lace material can be incorporated into this style for a more textured and romantic appearance. The sheath lace gown is ideal for women who prefer a more minimalist yet elegant style. It is commonly seen in both cocktail and formal event attire.

The ball gown silhouette is all about drama, volume, and opulence. A lace ball gown is perfect for a grand occasion, such as a fairy-tale wedding or a lavish gala. Lace details can be added to the bodice or as an overlay, contrasting beautifully with the voluminous skirt. This style provides an air of royalty and elegance, allowing wearers to stand out in any crowd.

An off-shoulder design is another timeless style that pairs beautifully with lace. The off-shoulder neckline adds a touch of sensuality and elegance, while the lace fabric softens the overall look. This style is ideal for those who want to highlight their shoulders and collarbones while maintaining an air of sophistication. It can be incorporated into any silhouette, from mermaid to A-line, making it a versatile choice.

A lace overlay gown offers a unique way to incorporate lace into a gown without being overly bold. The lace material can be layered over a solid-colored fabric, allowing the lace to peek through and create a beautiful, delicate effect. This style works particularly well with dresses that have a simple base, as the lace detailing adds depth and texture.

In conclusion, lace gowns come in a variety of styles that cater to different tastes and occasions. Whether you prefer the timeless elegance of an A-line, the dramatic flair of a mermaid gown, or the refined simplicity of a sheath, lace enhances the gown’s beauty and provides a luxurious, feminine touch. The versatility and charm of lace ensure it remains a go-to fabric for gowns, allowing women to express their unique sense of style.

Govt slightly misses T-Bill target despite investor rebound

0

The government narrowly missed its treasury bill (T-Bill) borrowing target in the latest auction, despite a modest recovery in investor participation.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s auction results, the government sought to raise GH¢6.6 billion but received total bids of GH¢6.4 billion—representing 97.5% of the target.

Of the total bids, GH¢4.6 billion was accepted, with GH¢1.8 billion rejected. The accepted bids amounted to 70.08% of the government’s initial target.

Recent market activity points to fluctuating investor confidence, even as interest rates on short-term securities remain relatively stable.

  • The 91-day bill held steady at 15.45%.

  • The 182-day bill dipped slightly to 16.18%, from 16.21% the previous week.

  • The 364-day bill also declined by 3 basis points to 18.62%.

The gradual drop in treasury bill rates aligns with the government’s broader objective of reducing the cost of domestic borrowing.

Binduri MP condemns violent attacks after killing of woman, 4 children

0

The Member of Parliament for Binduri Constituency has strongly condemned the recent spate of violent attacks in the area, describing the incidents as “brutal” and “unacceptable.”

In a statement issued following the latest attack at Benguri, which claimed the lives of a mother and her four children, the MP expressed deep sorrow and called for immediate action to end the hostilities that have engulfed parts of the Binduri Constituency.

“I am deeply saddened by the recent wave of attacks in the Binduri Constituency, which have claimed innocent lives and caused significant property damage. These brutal assaults, with the latest one in Benguri involving the slaying of a mother and her four children, are unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms.”

The MP extended condolences to the bereaved families and assured constituents that efforts are underway in collaboration with the relevant authorities to restore calm and bring the perpetrators to justice. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement.

“I commend the military for their professional conduct and diligence in making arrests and seizing arms and ammunition believed to be connected to the incident,” he noted, while also encouraging the continuation of efforts to apprehend all individuals involved.

However, the MP expressed concern over reports of the military seizing and burning motorbikes in the course of operations. He urged the security agencies to handle such seizures with due process.

“I condemn the act of seizing and burning of motorbikes by the military,” he said. “Seized motorbikes should be kept in the custody of security agencies, and due processes regarding the ban on motorbike riding must be followed.”

The Binduri lawmaker concluded by reaffirming his commitment to working with all stakeholders to restore lasting peace in the constituency and the broader Kusaug area.

The Member of Parliament for Binduri, Issifu Mahmoud, has assured residents that concrete measures are being taken to restore peace and stability following a wave of violent attacks in the area, including the recent tragic killing of a mother and her four children in Benguri.

In a press statement issued on Monday, April 21, the MP emphasised that he is working closely with security agencies and relevant authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further violence.

“I assure you that we are working closely with the relevant authorities to restore peace and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.

The Binduri MP also commended the military for their swift action in arresting suspects and seizing arms believed to be linked to the incident. He encouraged the security agencies to continue with their efforts until peace is fully restored, not only in Binduri but across the broader Kusaug area.

However, he expressed concern over the reported burning of seized motorbikes by the military, urging that all such seizures be handled through proper legal channels.

“I commend the military for their professional conduct and diligence in making arrests and seizure of arms and ammunitions believed to have a connection with the slain mother and her four children,” he stated.

“I condemn the act of seizing and burning of motorbikes by the military and rather urge that seized motorbikes should be kept in the custody of the security agencies and due processes regarding the ban on riding of motorbikes be followed,” he added.

The MP called on residents to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with law enforcement as the situation continues to unfold.
