President John Dramani Mahama has re-appointed Dr. George Smith-Graham as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), officially resuming office on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
This marks a return to a role he previously held from 2009 to 2017, during which he played a pivotal role in implementing the Single Spine Salary Structure, a key component of the FWSC Act, 2007 (Act 737)
His appointment marks a transition from the leadership of Mr. Benjamin Arthur, a respected figure in labour relations who guided the FWSC from January 2022 until this week.
Madam Emelia Ennin Abbey, the Head of Public Affairs at the FWSC, confirmed this pivotal change in leadership directly in a statement to the media.
Madam Ennin Abbey indicated that further details regarding Dr. Smith-Graham’s vision for the Commission would be shared following his assumption of office.
His return comes at a crucial juncture as the government outlines plans to transform the FWSC into an Independent Emoluments Commission.
With an impressive track record spanning over thirty years in compensation management, public service reforms, and strategic leadership, Dr. Smith-Graham is exceptionally well-placed to navigate the anticipated reforms.

A picture of Pope Francis (wearing white robe with a rosary) engaging with children
The passing of Pope Francis, Head of the Roman Catholic Church, has evoked a profound sense of sorrow, while also prompting a celebration of his enduring legacies and the impactful leadership he demonstrated throughout his papacy.
Pope Francis’s transformational policies and humble lifestyle have come under the spotlight, even as people around the world remember him and reflect on his accomplishments and the significant reforms he championed during his tenure as pope.
GhanaWeb highlights five key things the late Pope Francis will be fondly remembered and celebrated across the globe for.
Advocacy on the Russia-Ukraine War
A defining part of Pope Francis’s legacy was his response to the Russia-Ukraine War. He openly denounced the violence and devastation caused by the conflict, expressing deep concern over the loss of lives and the suffering of countless civilians. Throughout his tenure, he remained a strong advocate for peace, consistently urging all sides to seek a diplomatic and non-violent resolution.
Non-judgmental posture on LGBTQ+ activities
Another key thing the Pope did was his non-condemnation, judgmental, and advocacy for a more open stance of the church on sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community.
Pope Francis gave a seeming posture of being more welcoming to the community rather than pronounce judgment on them.
He is widely remembered for his remark as reported by international news platform, the Associated Press, saying; ‘Who am I to judge?’ in response to a question purportedly about a gay priest.
His remark was widely perceived as comforting, especially by members of the LGBTQ+ community who had long felt shunned and excluded by the church.
Visit to war-torn areas and empathy for victims
Pope Francis emerged as a beacon of hope and refuge for all, particularly for victims of wars, migrants, the underprivileged, and countless other marginalised groups.
He traveled to places seldom visited by his predecessors, including war and conflict zones, refugee camps, slums, and areas affected by natural disasters.
In 2015, he became the first Pope to enter an active war zone when he visited the Central African Republic during its civil war.
Leadership style
Many have eulogised the late Pope for his exemplary leadership style and qualities, which extended their influence beyond the Catholic Church.
He embodied true Christian values, serving as a father figure to all he encountered, regardless of their background or identity.
Modest lifestyle
Pope Francis’ modest approach to life was remarkable, as he chose to live humbly despite having access to considerable luxuries.
As reported by the Associated Press, he rode the bus, prepared his own meals, and frequently visited slums.
His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of many around the world, and his legacy will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.
Ghanaian singer Jackline Acheampong, popularly known as Gyakie, has opened up on feeling uncomfortable during her time in school due to the constant pressure from her lecturers.
Gyakie, who studied Business Administration at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), revealed that balancing her education with her music career often made her feel paranoid and overwhelmed.
“Sometimes, going to class becomes a bit uncomfortable because some lecturers know I am a singer, and they randomly ask me questions I am not ready to answer. Sometimes they throw questions at me that I don’t even know the answers to.
“Also in terms of how I dress as a student, I sometimes became paranoid because I don’t feel comfortable in the prescribed dress given to the business student. There are times I go to lectures and people would request for pictures times I don’t feel good about myself,” she said.
Gyakie also recalled how terrified she was during her first stage performance at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
“I was very scared during my first stage performance. I remember during the Republic Hall SRC week. I went to perform and during that, the speakers went off. I didn’t know what to do and some of the fans were hooting at me, while others tried their best to keep the atmosphere active.
“Nobody asked me to leave the stage. When I got backstage, I cried because I regretted going there,” she added.

The John Dramani Mahama government has revoked the mining licence of Akonta Mining Limited, a mining company owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), over illegal operations.
According to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the discovery of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
But this is not the first time Chairman Wontumi’s mining company has been in the news over its mining activities.
In 2023, the then Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, announced that Akonta Mining was involved in an illegality in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
However, days after the destruction of the equipment and structures of Akonta Mining in the forest reserve, the then-president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, exonerated the company of any wrongdoing.
Akufo-Addo said that Wontumi’s company was not engaged in illegal mining anywhere in the country, following calls for the arrest of the NPP regional chairman.
“Let me respond briefly to the chairperson on the issue of illegal mining. I want to assure him and all of you that Akonta Mining is not engaged in any illegal mining anywhere in Ghana as we speak.
“Further, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has, through the agency of the Forestry Commission, with the assistance of the military, made the effort to cordon off all 294 sites of forest reserves in the country and rid them of illegal mining as we speak,” he said.

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that in the event of his election as president, he will restore the licenses of banks that he believes were wrongly shut down.
He made the promise while delivering his formal acceptance speech on May 15, 2023.
John Mahama was declared the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress on May 13, 2023.
The former president noted his government will create a tier banking system that will boost Ghana’s financial sector.
“We shall promote robust, local participation in our banking and financial, telecommunication, tourism, mining, and agric and manufacturing sectors to grow our economy and create sustainable employment for our youths.
“We will restore indigenous Ghanaian investments in the finance and banking sector and we will create a tier banking system that will serve various segments of the market,” he said in his address at the University of Development Studies in Tamale.
John Mahama also noted that he will ensure that those who lost their jobs in the 2019 banking sector clean-up exercise are re-employed.
“We will give the opportunity to experience banking hands who were laid off needlessly to secure their careers once more and move away from the menial jobs that they were compelled to take.
“As far as practicable the banking licenses that were unjustly canceled by this government will be restored,” he said.

Grammy-winning Nigerian music star, Burna Boy, has gifted street-hop sensation Portable a whopping N20 million following his triumph in a much-hyped celebrity boxing match against rapper Speed Darlington.
The fight, dubbed “Chaos in the Rings,” saw Portable declared the winner after Speed Darlington failed to return for the second round, reportedly due to a broken arm sustained during the opening exchange.
The event, which had drawn attention for weeks due to the fiery exchanges between the two entertainers, ended dramatically when Speed Darlington’s corner called off the bout.
In the aftermath of the victory, Burna Boy — who has had a long-standing online feud with Speed Darlington — reportedly sent Portable the generous cash gift as a show of support and celebration. The ‘Zazu’ crooner took to his Instagram stories on Saturday to share the news with fans.
“20 million from @burnaboygram,” Portable posted. “If you wanna be like Odogwu, can you do like Odogwu? God bless your family.”
Later Portable was reported to have said Burner had not been picking up his calls after sending him the money.
While Burna Boy has yet to publicly confirm the gesture, Portable’s post quickly went viral, with fans praising the ‘African Giant’ for the unexpected show of generosity. Many also viewed the gift as a subtle jab at Speed Darlington, given the history of tension between the two artists.
The celebrity boxing match was the latest in a string of entertainment-driven sporting events in Nigeria, blending pop culture with sportsmanship and social media drama. Portable’s win adds another viral moment to his unpredictable career, and Burna Boy’s gesture has only added fuel to the conversation.
National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has raised strong concerns over what he describes as a premature and dangerous scramble within the party and government to succeed President John Mahama, only three months into his administration.
In an interview with Accra FM, Mr. Nketia, who is popularly known as ‘General Mosquito’, warned that such internal competition, if left unchecked, could derail the Mahama-led government’s performance and sow deep divisions within the NDC.
“If you were President Mahama and three months into your government, some members have already started jostling to succeed you, how can you concentrate on the job?” he questioned.
The NDC Chairman cited growing rumours and social media posts suggesting that top figures in government, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, the Vice President, and himself, are positioning themselves to take over after Mahama. He stressed that this kind of speculation is already creating tension and rivalry within the party.
“We are just running around saying a certain Minister is better than the Chief of Staff, who is his boss—and we have four years ahead of us. What does that mean?” he said. “These things are dangerous for us.”
Mr. Nketia recounted a similar situation in 2020 when TV host Paul Adom-Otchere, speculated on potential leadership pairings within the NDC following the party’s loss in the general election. He said he had to publicly shut down those discussions to preserve unity and focus.
“He started with permutations—Mahama pairing with me, Bagbin pairing with someone else. I saw that and realised this could knock our heads together. I called it village lotto forecasting. After that, he stopped, and it gave us peace to prepare for the next elections,” he said.
According to the NDC Chairman, the latest wave of succession talk, which he linked to political analyst Mussa K. Dankwah, carries similar dangers and must be curtailed immediately.
“This is not about whether it’s accurate or not. It’s about the potential to disrupt the government. If we allow this competition and permutation to fester, it will breed suspicion, motivate corruption, and ultimately damage our government,” he emphasised.
He appealed to all party members and government appointees to rally behind President Mahama and avoid any actions that could undermine his administration.
“Our fate is tied to the success of President Mahama. If scandals hit us because of this competition, that will be the end of us. Let’s give the President and Chief of Staff the peace of mind they need to lead,” he stated.
Mr. Nketia concluded with a stern warning that misinterpretation of decisions by top government officials, particularly the Chief of Staff, could paralyse governance and plunge the party into disarray.
Afenyo-Markin Prediction
Meanwhile, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has predicted that the governing NDC would soon face internal challenges over succession planning as President John Mahama begins what is expected to be his final term in office.
Speaking in an interview with veteran talk show host Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM), Mr. Afenyo-Markin said political dynamics within the NDC could soon shift, with key players already beginning to look beyond Mahama’s presidency.
“Obviously, the NDC would also have its own challenge,” the Minority Leader said. “Bear in mind that President Mahama has just a term already. I can foresee some internal alignment because by 2027 he may be a lame duck.”
According to Afenyo-Markin, political ambition is a natural part of party dynamics, and some NDC members may begin positioning themselves for leadership as the Mahama era approaches its constitutional limit.
“Politicians always have ambition. So his people may say, ‘Oh, the man is going, what do we do?’ Succession plan. So, there could be internal fights,” he noted.
While he did not name any specific individuals, Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s comments reflect growing speculation that jockeying for influence and future leadership roles may already be underway within the ruling party, just months into Mahama’s final term.
His remarks also come in the wake of warnings by NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who cautioned against premature succession debates and internal rivalry, describing them as potentially disruptive to the government’s effectiveness and unity.

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has joined world leaders in paying tribute to Pope Francis, who passed away today, Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 in his residence at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, President Mahama expressed his condolences to the Pope’s family and the Catholic Church while sharing memorable encounters he had with the late Pope during his first tenure as president.
“The world woke up to the sad news of Pope Francis’ passing,” he wrote. “On behalf of my family and the people of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Roman Catholic Church and all Catholic faithful in Ghana during this time of profound grief.”
He fondly recalled visiting the Vatican with his wife, Lordina, where they had the distinct honour of meeting Pope Francis. “His legacy of compassion, humility, and commitment to social justice will continue to inspire generations. His leadership and advocacy for the poor and marginalized resonate deeply. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
At 9:45 AM, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the sadden passing of the pope from Casa Santa Marta.
Pope Francis had been admitted to Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on Friday, February 14, 2025, after suffering from bronchitis for several days. His condition gradually worsened, and on Tuesday, February 18, he was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia.
After 38 days in the hospital, he returned to his Vatican residence at Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery.
Chima Uchechukwu, a Nigerian arrested with some narcotic drugs at Oyarifa in Accra and worth a whopping $2.1m, has pleaded not guilty to four counts of narcotic possession charges.
The Office of the Attorney General amended the charge sheet against the accused after a test by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) on the seized substances at his Oyarifa residence tested positive for cocaine, heroine and morphine, all narcotic drugs.
The items retrieved at the accused person’s residence included 192 slabs, 57 pellets and a polybag containing compressed substances.
Court documents indicate that Chima Uchechukwu is the head of a narcotic trafficking enterprise which operates in Ghana, and exported narcotic drugs to Europe and other parts of Africa.
He has been on the radar of the Narcotic Control Commission (NACOC) since 2023, and has been identified as the source of supply for some two Nigerians who were arrested, prosecuted and convicted in 2024 for drug trafficking.
Chima Uchechukwu has been charged with three counts of possession of narcotic drug without lawful authority contrary to Section 37(1) of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).
He has also been charged with one count of use of property for narcotic offences contrary to Sections 48(1), (a) and (b) of the same Act.
He pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was remanded into the custody of NACOC to reappear on May 2, 2025.
Brief Facts
Prosecution’s facts presented by Watkins Adama, a Senior State Attorney indicate that Chima Uchechukwu was identified sometime in 2025, and was put under surveillance.
He was seen on several occasions accessing and using two properties at Oyaria, which are approximately one kilometre apart.
On March 18, 2025, he was arrested at his private residence at Oyarifa but nothing relating to narcotic drug was found at his home except huge sums of money in different currencies.
These monies are believed to be proceeds of his narcotic drug trafficking activities.
He was then led to the other identified property and he provided a key and gave access to NACOC officers to conduct a search.
The search revealed materials and other implements found to be used to package and repackage narcotic drugs.
192 slabs, 57 pellets and a polybag containing compressed substances retrieved from the property of the accused person tested positive for cocaine and heroin.
The Ghana Standards Authority, per a report dated April 4, 2025, confirmed that the 192 slabs tested positive for cocaine with percentage purity of between 48.79 and 70.42.
The 57 pellets were also tested positive for cocaine with percentage purity of 49.63.
Again, the polybag retrieved tested positive for heroin and morphine, narcotic drugs with percentage purity of 18.65 and 17.57 respectively.
Chima Uchechukwu, who is believed to be part of a larger criminal enterprise engaged in trafficking narcotic drugs, was found to have amassed several properties and luxury vehicles, which are still being investigated.
The facts added that efforts have also been intensified to identify other partners and accomplices of the accused person for their arrest.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has advised Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger to reconsider their decision to leave the regional grouping.
It said the three countries that withrew from ECOWAS earlier this year to form the “Alliance of Sahel States” (AES), can automatically rejoin ECOWAS if they change their minds by July 29, 2025.
Speaking at a High-Level Policy Dialogue in Accra last Tuesday, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Dr Abdel-Fatau Musah, said in a bid to maintain ties, ECOWAS has allowed citizens of the three countries to continue to enjoy free movement rights within the region.
He said the regional body has also called on the countries to collaborate on security and humanitarian issues.
Event
The event was organised by the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) in collaboration with the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and the Conflict Research Network (CORN) West Africa.
The two-day event, on the theme: “Understanding the Geopolitical and Strategic Changes in West Africa: Emerging Challenges and the Future of ECOWAS,” brought together stakeholders, including representatives of ECOWAS, African Union, United Nations, development partners, policymakers, civil society organisations, analysts and researchers.
It was to assess the current state of affairs and examine the role of ECOWAS in addressing the challenges of conflict transformation in West Africa within the evolving geopolitical and strategic context.
It also provided a platform to discuss strategies to address the concerns of the AES countries with the aim of reintegrating them into ECOWAS. Present at the event was Ghana’s Envoy to the AES, Lt Colonel Larry Gbevolo-Lartey.
Keynote address
Dr Musah, delivering his keynote address titled “Reflections on the State of Affairs in West Africa,” said ECOWAS has appointed two Presidents, Diomaye Faye of Senegal and Faure Gnassingbe of Togo, to engage in dialogue with the three countries to encourage their return.
He identified governance and development deficits as major contributors to the region’s current challenges.
The Executive Director of WANEP, Levinia Addae-Mensah, in her welcome address, touched on the complex challenges facing the region, including fragility, fragmentation and violent extremism.
“Our beloved West Africa is confronted with a complex array of challenges that threaten to erode decades of investment in peacebuilding, regional integration, democratic governance and social cohesion,” she said.
She cited the recent exit of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from ECOWAS as a “profound indicator of the deep fractures we must confront with courage, candour and commitment.”
Mrs Addae-Mensah emphasised the need for innovative responses to the region’s challenges, saying that “it compels us not only to understand the geopolitical and strategic changes taking place, but to think differently, to reimagine the role of regional institutions and civil society in shaping a more inclusive, resilient and united West Africa.”

Ghana has exceeded an important benchmark under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme of increasing the country’s gross international reserve. This has been achieved a year ahead of the completion date of the programme in May 2026.
Data released after a staff-level agreement between the government and the IMF, indicates that Ghana’s gross international reserve hit $9.3 billion as of as of February 2025. This is equivalent to four months of import cover.
Ghana was expected to reach the threshold by middle of 2026 under the programme.
Reacting to the development, senior finance lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, Dr Benjamin Amoah described the feat as a good development that could sustain the cedi’s stability.
“I think this is a good development for the cedi. Improving the reserves will send a positive signal to investors that the currency is in a good position”, he said.
He advised the government to continue with the debt sustainability measures to further boost the country’s reserves.
Gov’t and IMF reach staff-level agreement
Ghana and the IMF reached a staff-level agreement on a package of economic policies and reforms to conclude the fourth review of the 36-month Economic Credit Facility (ECF)-supported programme on April 15, 2025.
This staff-level agreement is subject to the executive board’s consideration.
Upon completion of the executive board review, Ghana would have access to SDR 267.5 million (about US$370 million). This will bring the total IMF financial support disbursed under the arrangement since May 2023 to SDR 1,708 million, approximately US$2.355 billion.
The Fund in a communique said growth in 2024 was higher than expected, underpinned by strong mining and construction activity.
“The external sector has seen a considerable improvement, driven by solid exports, particularly gold and, to a lesser extent, oil, and higher remittances. As a result, international reserves accumulation has far exceeded the ECF-supported programme targets”, it stressed.
Notwithstanding these achievements, the Fund indicated that the overall performance under the IMF-supported programme deteriorated markedly at end-2024.
“Preliminary fiscal data point to slippages in the run-up to the 2024 general elections, on account of a large accumulation of payables. Inflation exceeded programme targets. Several reforms and policy actions were delayed across the fiscal, financial, and energy sectors”, it added.
Against this backdrop, it pointed out that the new authorities have taken bold measures to address policy slippages and ensure the programme objectives remain within reach.
On the fiscal front, the government has launched an audit of the payables to firm up the size and nature of the slippages. Based on preliminary estimates of new payables, the primary balance posted a deficit of some 3¼ percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) compared to a targeted surplus of ½ percent of GDP.
To address these slippages, the IMF alluded that the government has enacted a 2025 Budget that targets a 1½ percent of GDP primary surplus and adopted several public financial management reforms. The latter includes an enhanced fiscal responsibility framework and new rules to tighten expenditure commitments.

Socialite and entrepreneur Rose Gold has addressed longstanding public speculation about her relationship with businessman Nana Prempeh, stating that when they began dating, she was not certain he was married.
In an interview on The Delay Show, the Rose Gold Luxury Boutique founder said she was 17 when the relationship began, and Prempeh was in his 30s.
“I wasn’t sure if he had a wife or not. I only knew he wasn’t wearing a ring,” she told Delay. “Even if he had told me he wasn’t married, I wouldn’t have believed him, so I didn’t bother to ask.”
Rose Gold said she met Prempeh at age 16 while working at her mother’s shop in Tafo. According to her, he left the country shortly after and returned over a year later, when they reconnected and began a romantic relationship.
She said she found out about his marital status about a year into the relationship and informed her mother. “She advised me not to cross the path of the other woman. It’s not like she supported it, but I didn’t give her a reason to be worried.”
Delay posed a hypothetical scenario, asking how Rose Gold would react if her future daughter were in a similar situation. She responded: “I’ll advise her the same way my mother advised me. I’ll weigh her level of understanding and the man’s intentions.”
When asked about reports that Nana Prempeh had a child with another woman following the passing of his wife, Rose Gold said she had no knowledge of it. “I haven’t seen that. I haven’t heard it. He hasn’t told me,” she said.
“If it’s true, I will still be Rose Gold,” she added. “When the time is right, what will happen will happen.”

Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called on Ghana and other countries impacted by the United States’ 10% trade tariffs to intensify efforts by implementing economic policies that will protect them from global trade disruptions.
Amid growing global trade tensions, the IMF emphasised the urgency for these countries to prioritise economic stability through bold reforms.
Speaking at the 2025 Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the IMF, Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva called on the need for immediate action.
“All countries must redouble efforts to put their own houses in order. In a world of high uncertainty and frequent shocks, there is simply no room for delay in reforms to enhance economic and financial stability and improve growth potential.” Georgieva said.
She added that many economies are entering this challenging period from a weaker position, burdened by significantly higher public debt compared to just a few years ago.
“As such, most countries must take resolute fiscal action to rebuild fiscal space, setting out gradual adjustment paths that respect fiscal frameworks,” she said.
She further acknowledged that some nations may face additional shocks requiring renewed fiscal support.

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has directed the Minerals Commission to revoke the mining lease of Akonta Mining Company Ltd.
This follows revelations that the company is deeply involved in illegal mining activities—commonly known as galamsey—within protected forest reserves in the country.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra yesterday, the sector minister outlined findings from recent undercover investigations which revealed that Akonta Mining was operating unlawfully in forest reserves despite lacking the necessary permits.
According to the minister, although Akonta Mining holds a licence to operate off-reserve, the company had encroached into the Aboi and Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves in the Western North Region.
The investigations further revealed that Akonta Mining had been selling access to these reserves to illegal miners for as much as GH¢300,000 per concession. In return, some of these miners allegedly paid weekly royalties in gold—up to 250 grams—to the company.
“This company has not only trespassed into protected reserves but has become a criminal syndicate, selling access of the Aboi Forest Reserve to illegal miners for a staggering GH¢300,000 per concession.
“Worse, these illegal miners operate under Akonta’s protection, devastating the River Tano and surrounding forests with impunity,” Mr. Buah said.
He continued, “As part of the agreement between Akonta Mining and the illegal miners, weekly royalties of 250 grams of gold are to be paid to the company, lining the pockets of Akonta’s collaborators.”
The minister identified key individuals involved in these illicit activities, including a company liaison named Mr. Ayisi, who facilitated the deals, and two others known as “Mr. Henry” and “Shark,” who were reportedly responsible for overseeing the on-ground destruction of the forest landscape.
The revelations led to a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission, which yielded significant results.
“Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (April 17, 2025), an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.
“The operation in Compartment 49, which began at 5 a.m. and lasted a whopping 12 hours, resulted in 51 arrests (8 Chinese, 39 Ghanaian men, 4 Ghanaian women), seizure of about 30 excavators – 5 recovered and impounded at the operation base, 2 pump-action guns loaded with 5 and 2 rounds of BB cartridges each, 1 single-barrel gun retrieved, confiscation of 2 Toyota Hilux pickups, 1 Toyota RAV4, 4 motorbikes, and a cache of mining equipment.”
All suspects are currently in custody in Accra pending prosecution.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has begun a reshuffle of police commanders stationed in illegal mining (galamsey) hotspots, as the Ghana Police Service intensifies its crackdown on the destructive activity.
The move, which targets Divisional and District Commanders mainly in the Eastern South, Western, and Western North regions, is the first phase of what the IGP described as a broader exercise to inject new energy and accountability into the fight against galamsey.
“This reshuffle is part of a broader effort to ensure more effective policing in areas plagued by illegal mining,” a police statement noted, emphasizing that more changes are expected in the coming weeks.
Below is the full statement by the police

Police Commands affected include some Divisional and District Commanders mainly in the Eastern South, Western and Western North Police Regions.
In a related development, the Ghana Police Service has made a major breakthrough in its war against illegal mining (galamsey).
A special four continuous days intelligence-led anti-galamsey operations which started on 17th April, 2025 within the Samreboi enclave in the Western Region has resulted in the arrest of 47 people for illegal mining activities along the Tano River and in the Aboi, Subri and Nimiri forests of the Western region.

Security Minister Mahamadou Sana announced the foiling of the coup on television on Monday
Burkina Faso’s military government has said it foiled a “major plot” to overthrow junta leader Capt Ibrahim Traoré, with the army alleging the plotters were based in neighbouring Ivory Coast.
Security Minister Mahamadou Sana said the coup attempt was led by current and former soldiers working with “terrorist leaders”. The intention was to attack the presidential palace last week, he added.
The aim of the plan was to “sow total chaos, and place the country under the supervision of an international organisation”, Sana said on state television on Monday.
It is the latest of several claims of attempts to remove the junta leader who seized power in 2022 amid increasing militant attacks.
Burkina Faso, like its Sahel neighbours, has been battling armed jihadist groups, with an estimated 40% of the country under their control.
Despite promises by Capt Traoré’s military government to improve security and even seeking new security partnerships with Russia, the situation remains dire with frequent attacks from insurgents.
In this latest coup attempt, which happened last week but details of which have only just been released, Sana said the plotters attempted to use Burkinabe religious and traditional leaders to sway army officers into backing the plan.
“The manoeuvre was to culminate, according to the terrorist plotters’ plan, on Wednesday 16 April, 2025 in an assault on the presidency of (Burkina) Faso by a group of soldiers recruited by the nation’s enemies,” he said.
“The brains outside the country are all located in Ivory Coast,” he added, naming in particular two former army officers, believed to be behind the plot.
He said “sensitive information was passed on to “terrorists” to increase attacks on the military and civilians and “incite a revolt against the authorities”.
Last week, several military personnel, including two officers, were arrested for planning to “destabilise” the government, security sources told the AFP news agency.
The Ivorian authorities have not yet commented on claims it hosted the plotters but the Burkinabe junta has often blamed its southern neighbour of supporting its opponents in exile.
The latest claim comes months after Ouagadougou said it thwarted another “destabilisation” plot against the junta last November.
Burkina Faso, along with two other military-led states – Mali and Niger, has broken away from the regional West African bloc, Ecowas, to form a new alliance.
They have cut ties with former colonial power France and allied with Russia instead.

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Bimbo Ademoye has issued a firm warning to television stations in Ghana, accusing them of illegally broadcasting her films without authorisation.
Her statement adds to the growing frustration among Nigerian filmmakers such as Ruth Kadiri and Omoni Oboli over what appears to be a recurring pattern of copyright infringement by some Ghanaian media outlets.
In a video that was shared on her Instagram page, Bimbo Ademoye expressed deep disappointment and anger at the continued use of her intellectual property without consent.
The actress disclosed that she initially sought a collaborative approach, hoping to engage in discussions with the stations involved.
However, she stated that repeated violations and lack of accountability have led her to withdraw any willingness to negotiate.
“That TV station in Ghana, I’m talking to you, don’t show my movies. I haven’t given you permission. Before, I used to say, ‘At least come to me, let’s discuss and share,’ but now, I don’t want your money. Don’t show my movies,” she stated.
There are reports alleging that Ghana’s Daily TV and at least three other television stations have broadcasted Bimbo Ademoye’s movie without obtaining the necessary rights.
The actress warned that if the illegal airing continues, she is prepared to escalate the matter to the relevant authorities.
In addition to targeting TV stations, Ademoye also condemned several YouTube channels, including Ayodeji Films, Nolly Specials, and Nollynew Series, for using her movie titles and promotional images to deceive viewers.
Bimbo Ademoye further accused these YouTube platforms of content theft, claiming they often bait audiences with her name and likeness only to show unrelated material.
In a strongly worded caption accompanying her video, she vowed to protect the integrity of her work.
“Let the battle begin. I will not let anyone profit off my blood, sweat, and sleepless nights,” she added.
The Ghana Police Service has recorded significant progress in its ongoing fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, following a recent reshuffle of commanders in mining-prone regions.
In a renewed anti-galamsey effort spearheaded by Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Service reshuffled key divisional and district commanders in parts of the Eastern South, Western, and Western North Police Regions.
The move is part of a broader strategy to inject fresh energy and commitment into the ongoing campaign against illegal mining.
According to the Police, this is the first phase of a larger reshuffle expected to cover more areas across the country.
In a related operation, a major breakthrough was achieved during a four-day intelligence-led anti-galamsey mission launched on April 17, 2025, in the Samreboi enclave of the Western Region.
The operation targeted illegal mining activities along the Tano River and in the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri forest areas.
In a statement, the service revealed that “A total of 47 suspects were arrested, including 39 Ghanaians, 8 Chinese nationals, and four women.”
According to the police, “All suspects are currently in custody and will be processed through the legal system.”
Items retrieved during the operation include:
Seventeen (17) excavators
One (1) bulldozer
Four (4) motorbikes
Two (2) Toyota Hilux vehicles
One (1) Toyota RAV4 vehicle
Four (4) pump-action guns
One (1) single-barrel gun
Fifty-four (54) live BB cartridges
Eight (8) water pumping machines
The Police Service has reiterated its commitment to sustaining the pressure on illegal mining operations, which continue to devastate the country’s environment and water bodies.
The IGP has assured the public that no individual or group involved in illegal mining will be spared, regardless of status or nationality.

Trina Solar is a China-based solar equipment manufacturer with operations across South East Asia
The US Commerce Department has announced plans to impose tariffs of up to 3,521% on imports of solar panels from four South East Asian countries.
It comes after an investigation that began a year ago when several major solar equipment producers asked then-President Joe Biden administration to protect their US operations.
The proposed levies – targeting companies in Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam – are in response to allegations of subsidies from China and the dumping of unfairly cheap products in the US market.
A separate US government agency, the International Trade Commission, is due to reach a final decision on the new tariffs in June.
The countervailing and anti-dumping duties, as these tariffs are known, vary between companies and the countries their products are made in.
Some solar equipment exporters in Cambodia face the highest duties of 3,521% because of what was seen as a lack of cooperation with the Commerce Department investigation.
Products made in Malaysia by Chinese manufacturer Jinko Solar faced some of the lowest duties of just over 41%.
Another China-based firm, Trina Solar, faces tariffs of 375% for the products it makes in Thailand.
Neither company immediately responded to requests for comment from BBC News.
In recent years, many Chinese firms have moved operations to South East Asia in a bid to avoid tariffs imposed since the start of US President Donald Trump’s first term.
The US Commerce Department’s findings were welcomed by the American Alliance for Solar Manufacturing Trade Committee – a group of manufacturers that called on the US government to launch the investigation.
“This is a decisive victory for American manufacturing and confirms what we’ve long known: that Chinese-headquartered solar companies have been cheating the system,” said Tim Brightbill, lead counsel to the Alliance.
In 2023, America imported almost $12bn (£8.9bn) in solar equipment from the four countries, according to US Census Bureau figures.
While the planned tariffs are likely to help US solar panel manufacturers, they could also mean extra costs for businesses and consumers who have benefited from the availability of cheaper solar products.
The levies would be imposed on top of other tariffs already rolled out by the Trump administration.
They planned tariffs were announced just days after Chinese President Xi Jinping, completed a tour of Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia.
The trip was aimed to boost ties with the region and encourage those nations to resist what he called “unilateral bullying” by the US.
Trump has so far imposed taxes of up to 145% on imports from China. Other countries are now facing a blanket US tariff of 10% until July.
His administration said last week that when the new tariffs are added on to existing ones, the levies on some Chinese goods could reach 245%.
China has hit back with a 125% tax on products from the US and vowed to “fight to the end”.
“Rest In Peace to TV3” : Do You Know Why TV3 Is Trending On Social Media
News Hub Creator2d
Social media has been buzzing with a wave of posts declaring “Rest in peace to TV3,” leading to widespread curiosity about the status of one of Ghana’s most respected television networks.
The trending phrase began earlier this week, causing speculation about whether TV3 had stopped broadcasting or was undergoing a major crisis. Despite the concern, checks confirm that the station is still running normally, airing its usual content. So, what’s behind the trending phrase?
Users online suggest that the message is symbolic, implying a decline in TV3’s programming quality and cultural relevance. Many feel the channel no longer holds the strong influence it once had in Ghanaian media, especially with its once-popular shows like Ghana’s Most Beautiful and Date Rush.
One post on X stated, “TV3 was once top-tier. Now it’s all empty content and too many adverts. RIP to the old days.” Another echoed similar sentiments: “They’ve lost their edge. Other networks are now far more interesting.”
Criticism has also been directed toward alleged shifts in management and program direction, with many claiming digital platforms and emerging stations have outperformed TV3 in attracting modern audiences.
Despite the criticism, some fans continue to stand by the channel, calling for positive suggestions rather than negative commentary.
As of now, TV3 has yet to release any formal response to the viral trend.
According to reports from GhanaWeb, Sammy Gyamfi, Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), has declared that the time for accountability has arrived for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Gyamfi highlighted that the recent revocation of the mining license belonging to Wontumi’s company, Akonta Mining, underscores former President John Mahama’s dedication to curbing illegal mining activities across the country.
“The day of reckoning for Chairman Wontumi and his ilk has come. @JDMahama means business. Together with well-meaning Ghanaians, we shall win the fight against illegal mining and preserve our environment,” he stated.
This statement followed a directive from the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, instructing the Minerals Commission to cancel Akonta Mining’s lease due to violations of mining regulations.
The Minister revealed that a coordinated effort by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission uncovered six sites where Akonta Mining was allegedly conducting unauthorized mining operations.
During a press conference held on April 21, 2025, Buah disclosed that some community members had shared concerns that the company was using aggressive methods, including forceful intrusion onto farmland and destruction of crops.
The operation, carried out on April 17 in Compartment 49, lasted 12 hours and led to the arrest of 51 individuals — including eight Chinese nationals and 43 Ghanaians — and the seizure of approximately 30 excavators.
Five of the machines were recovered and moved to the operation base.
Authorities also confiscated two pump-action rifles with ammunition, a single-barrel firearm, two Toyota Hilux pickups, one Toyota RAV4, four motorcycles, and a variety of mining tools.
All individuals apprehended have been transferred to Accra and remain in police custody as legal proceedings begin.

The Minerals Commission has confirmed it has gathered solid evidence proving that Akonta Mining Limited engaged in illegal mining activities, widely known as galamsey, within the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, despite the company’s repeated public denials.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, April 22, the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Isaac Andrew Tandoh, disclosed that the Commission’s findings are based on verified intelligence, including geolocation data and video evidence directly linking Akonta Mining to operations within protected forest zones.
“For the intelligence we have now, the conditions and the videos we have now are more than enough to go after the perpetrators. The AG has been advised to pick up these conversations and make sure that the powers that are behind these perpetrators are brought to book,” he said.
Tandoh’s remarks follow a strong denial from Akonta Mining, which insists it has never conducted unlawful operations within any forest reserve and claims its activities comply with all regulatory requirements.
But Tandoh dismissed the company’s response, describing it as a mere public relations tactic that won’t deter enforcement efforts.
“People can write letters and issue rebuttals in the newspapers; that is not something I will bother my head with, that will trouble me. This is just the beginning. We’ll allow the Attorney General to take over and ensure that the masterminds behind these illicit operations are dealt with in a way that deters others,” he stated.
The Commission’s position aligns with that of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which, on Monday, April 21, 2025, announced the revocation of Akonta Mining’s lease. According to Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the company illegally extended its activities into the Aboi and Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves in the Western North Region, despite only holding licenses for operations in off-reserve areas.
The ongoing probe forms part of the government’s intensified efforts to clamp down on illegal mining and protect Ghana’s forest reserves.

Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, has alleged that he was harassed during the tenure of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration.
According to Gbande, the former president used the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to harass him several times.
Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV on April 11, 2025, which was shared on social media, Gbande recounted warning the former NIB boss, Nana Attobrah Quaicoe, to ensure their paths did not cross on bad terms due to the alleged harassment.
“A month before the elections, they tried all possible means, including spiritual efforts, but they didn’t succeed. They tried to use the NIB and GRA to frustrate me, but it didn’t work,” he said.
Mustapha, who doubles as the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), added, “I told the NIB boss, I don’t know where he is now, that he should tell President Akufo-Addo that nothing will stop us from grounding his government.
“I also told Attobrah that he should pray we don’t meet again on a bad note because the NPP killed me while I was alive. As a poor young man under their regime, they had my houses demolished.”
Gbande further accused the previous NPP government of demolishing his buildings, adding to his frustrations during their tenure.

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, will hold critical talks with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva this week during the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C. The discussions will center on Ghana’s economic reforms, progress under its IMF-backed program, and strategies to stabilize its economy amid global challenges.
Forson, leading his first delegation under President John Mahama’s administration, arrives days after Ghana secured a staff-level agreement with the IMF on the fourth review of its $3 billion Extended Credit Facility. The deal unlocks approximately $370 million in funding, despite earlier delays in meeting structural benchmarks before the government took office in January 2025.
Ghana’s agenda at the meetings includes sessions on job creation, energy security, and climate adaptation, alongside meetings with the Paris Club, credit rating agencies, and U.S. Treasury officials. These engagements aim to bolster investor confidence and secure support for the country’s debt restructuring efforts, a key pillar of its economic reset plan.
Central to Forson’s pitch is the “Ghana Reset Story,” a roadmap prioritizing fiscal discipline, social protection programs, and structural reforms to achieve debt sustainability. The plan also emphasizes inclusive growth, targeting vulnerable populations through targeted subsidies and public service investments under the slogan “The Ghana We Want.”
The meetings coincide with Ghana’s fragile recovery from soaring inflation and a volatile currency, compounded by global supply chain disruptions and elevated interest rates. While the IMF deal offers immediate liquidity relief, analysts stress that long-term stability hinges on the government’s ability to implement politically sensitive measures, such as expanding tax compliance and curbing energy sector debts. Success could reinforce Ghana’s role as a regional economic anchor, though balancing austerity with public expectations remains a tightrope walk.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, has criticised the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, over his emotional reaction to the devastation caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
His comments follow a press briefing where the minister, visibly shaken by the extent of environmental degradation in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, paused mid-speech to wipe away tears as he described the transformation of once-lush forest into a wasteland.
The minister recounted seeing streams choked with mud and the silence of once-thriving ecosystems — a grim picture that left the room silent.
However, speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Tuesday, April 22, Miracles Aboagye dismissed the emotional display, calling it unproductive.
He argued that the minister’s tears send the wrong signal to Ghanaians, suggesting helplessness rather than action.
“Who ever directed the minister to cry did him a disservice. We didn’t vote for you to go and cry. This is a man that stood in parliament and told the then president in his face that ‘his tenure in office will remain a timely reminder of how not to govern a country’.
“He is the man who said that they had the solution to dealing with this galamsey. In fact, the cabinet minister, Sam George, the communications minister said that if Nana Akufo-Addo was serious, he would end galamsey in one week.
“So, if you are in power and you are given the mandate to stop it and you come and cry, what do we do. it creates a hopeless situation,” he stated.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has denied releasing any portion of the Prof. Oquaye Committee Report, stating that only one copy was prepared and submitted to the National Council.
The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, who issued the disclaimer, said the party was still studying the report’s contents and would disclose relevant information if necessary.
He warned against the circulation of fake quotes purporting to be from the report and attributed them to political opponents, particularly members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Frimpong urged members of the party to disregard such quotes and remain focused on the party’s rebuilding efforts ahead of the 2028 elections.
Prof. Oquaye’s 11-member committee tasked with investigating the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election presented its report to the National Council of the party last Wednesday.
Since then, there have been several quotes making the rounds on social media purported to be coming from the report.
Flag bearer
The party also cautioned its executives, leading members and communicators against making public endorsements or denigrating comments about prospective flagbearer aspirants.
The National Council of the party issued the warning after taking a serious view of some distasteful comments made against some aspirants.
The directive, which remains in force until nominations for presidential primaries are opened, warned that any party executive or member who flouted it would face sanctions in accordance with the party’s constitution and code of conduct.
The party urged its members and stakeholders to cooperate in maintaining party unity.
9-Member Committee
Meanwhile, the party has formed a nine-member Constitutional Amendment Committee to review and propose amendments to the party’s constitution.
The committee, chaired by Frank Davies, Chairman of the party’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, was constituted by the National Council at its meeting last Wednesday.
The committee members include the Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei; MP for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah; a Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Dr Antoinette Tsiboe-Darko; the Volta Regional Chairman of he NPP, Makafui Woanyah, and a former MP, Ebenezer Nartey, as Secretary.
The committee’s mandate includes:
• Identifying provisions of the Party Constitution that require amendments to give effect to the recommendations of the Mike Oquaye Election Review Committee
• Working on the recommendations of the 2021 Constitutional Review Committee chaired by Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin
• Receiving proposals for constitutional amendments from party members and identifiable groups
• Categorising proposals under various Articles and Clauses for ease of reference
• Making appropriate recommendations to guide the debate at the National Annual Delegates Conference
The party would hold an Extraordinary National Annual Delegates Conference in July this year to consider the committee’s report, which would be tabled in the form of amendment motions for approval or otherwise.
I’ve been married for over five years and have two children with my wife. Despite my marital status, I began a relationship with another woman about a year ago.
From the beginning, I was honest with her about being married, but I also expressed a genuine interest in pursuing something serious with her.
I made it clear that she had every right to say no, I didn’t want her doing anything against her will.
After taking time to consider, she agreed to the relationship. I truly cared for her and did everything I could to make her comfortable. I supported her financially, giving her no less than GH₵4,000 monthly.
I even asked her to quit her job, which wasn’t paying well, and instead paid her a salary of GH₵1,500 in addition to GH₵2,500 for upkeep. I regularly sent her money and gifts because I wanted her to be happy.
Three months ago, she told me she was pregnant. I reminded her of our earlier agreement, not to have children together.
She had also told me she was on family planning, so I was surprised by the news. I asked her to consider terminating the pregnancy, but she refused and insisted on keeping the baby.
Since then, things have gone downhill. I no longer feel the same way about her, and I’ve stopped the financial support. When she realized I was cutting her off, she came to my office and tried to create a scene.
I had my staff remove her. She later went to my house and revealed everything to my wife. My wife was clearly disappointed, but she didn’t react immediately.
This morning, the lady sent me a threatening message, saying she would take me to a shrine and curse me for abandoning her while pregnant.
I feel this is unfair. I never promised her marriage or children, and I made my intentions very clear from the start. I supported her financially and emotionally, up until she went against what we both agreed on.
I’m confused and deeply worried. I’m trying to protect my marriage and my home. Am I wrong for refusing responsibility for the pregnancy, considering our agreement? How do I handle these threats, and what can I do to protect myself, my reputation, and my family?
Leader of the Alliance for Restoration Rights, William Kofi Yirenkyi
The leader of the Alliance for Restoration Rights, William Kofi Yirenkyi, has accused the National Signals Bureau (NSB) of flouting directives issued by the Right to Information (RTI) Commission regarding the release of documents linked to two separate criminal incidents.
In an exclusive interview with Homebase TV journalist Beauty Etornam Amedzotsi on April 21, 2025, Yirenkyi stated that the National Signals Bureau has failed to comply with a clear directive from the Commission, which required them to release video footage to him within seven days of receiving a letter from the Commission.
“This is a blatant disregard for the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989) and a dangerous attack on transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in Ghana.
“When institutions funded by taxpayers defy oversight bodies, democracy is under threat.
“The law must be upheld,” he said.
The Right to Information (RTI) Commission on April 9, 2025, directed the National Signals Bureau to formally release the said information requested by William Kofi Yirenkyi, following a review application filed against the Bureau’s initial refusal to provide the data.
In a letter dated March 26, 2025, and referenced NSB/G.O/V.III/25/033, the NSB responded to Yirenkyi’s application.
After evaluating the responses submitted, the Commission concluded that the information sought must be disclosed to the applicant within seven days of receipt of its directive.
As stipulated by the Commission, the release of the information is subject to standard fees as outlined in the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080). Specifically, photocopied documents will attract a fee of GH¢ 0.27 per page, printed documents GH¢ 0.38 per page, and information in computer-readable format GH¢ 0.29 per page.
The Commission emphasized that while Section 43(2)(c) of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989) empowers it to make determinations deemed just and equitable—including recommendations or penalties—the law does not authorize it to waive administrative penalties imposed on institutions.
As such, any administrative penalty levied on the NSB in connection with the matter must be upheld.
Genevieve Shirley Lartey, Executive Secretary of the RTI Commission, signed the letter, affirming the Commission’s stance and urging full cooperation from the NSB.

A key outcome of the partnership is the development of a Memorandum of Understanding
In a landmark move to bridge academia and industry, the Regional Maritime University (RMU) and DNV Benmarine Services (BmS) have launched a strategic training initiative designed not only to enhance professional capacity in the maritime sector but also to spearhead local innovation in research and manufacturing.
Unveiled on Wednesday, April 16,2025, the “DNV & RMU Training Programmes for Industry Stakeholders” aim to develop high-level technical skills in maritime safety, operations, and risk management while laying the groundwork for deeper collaboration.
A key outcome of the partnership is the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will drive research into the local production of welding electrodes to meet international standards—a transformative move set to boost local manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports.
“This initiative goes beyond training. It’s about innovation, sustainability, and building Ghana’s capacity as a leader in maritime excellence across Africa,” said Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jr., Acting Vice-Chancellor of RMU.
Dr Brooks emphasized that the partnership between RMU and DNV embodies the future of innovation—one driven not in isolation but through synergistic collaboration that harnesses the strengths of both academia and industry.
He further highlighted RMU’s pride in being part of this forward-looking alliance, which aligns with the university’s broader strategic vision to promote sustainability, deepen international collaboration, and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of maritime education and practice across Africa.
DNV Regional Manager Ian Edward underscored Ghana’s strategic value in the region’s maritime future, highlighting the programme’s potential to create a new generation of highly skilled professionals ready to drive industry evolution.
“The RMU-DNV BmS collaboration sets a precedent for how strategic partnerships can solve real-world challenges through research, education, and a shared vision for sustainable growth,” he stated.
Regional Maritime Academy Manager for the Middle East and Africa, Ms. Michelle Maria Kurian, and Managing Director of DNV BmS, Frederick Asamoah, also expressed strong enthusiasm for the collaboration, particularly in the areas of academic and industrial research, as well as knowledge sharing to address challenges facing the maritime industry.
Additional presentations were made by the Deputy Managing Director of DNV BmS, Bernard Lomotey Agbloe, and Business Controller, Mary Owusu Ewusi.
Leaders from key maritime and petroleum institutions, including the Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Tullow, MODEC, and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), were in attendance, marking a unified industry commitment to the success of the initiative.

Some Ghanaian football supporters have expressed disappointment in Asante Kotoko over their decision to dismiss head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum at a time when the team is competing for the Ghana Premier League title.
On April 21, 2025, Kotoko released a statement announcing that they had parted ways with Ogum following a critical analysis of his performance with the team.
“Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has, this afternoon, parted company with head coach Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum.
“This decision was reached following constructive discussions between both parties, with a shared understanding that it is in the best interest of the club at this time,” the statement read.
The former WAFA gaffer exits after two seasons, having returned for a second stint with the Porcupine Warriors.
The team, which had led the Ghana Premier League table at some point, has now slipped to fourth place, having managed only two wins in their last nine games.
Despite these concerns, some football fans believe the decision was taken in haste, considering the timing, with the season almost ending soon.
Others also argued that despite the poor run of form in recent matches, Kotoko are still lying fourth on the table with 47 points, just six points behind leaders Bibiani Gold Stars, which they could have won if the coach was maintained.
Some fans also fumed that the dismissal could exacerbate the woes of the club as the season heads to its conclusion.
Currently, Asante Kotoko sit on 47 points, trailing league leaders Bibiani Gold Stars by six points with six matches remaining in the season.
Despite their inconsistency in the league, the club remains in the hunt for silverware, with a place in the semi-finals of the MTN FA Cup keeping hopes of a domestic double alive.
Read the reactions below:
I agree Kotoko has been on a bad patch, but to sack Ogum Narteh with just six games to end the season is hasty. Unless there’s a bigger picture, we are yet to see.
it’s not hasty but rather almost too late to sack a coach at this point in a league title race, what is the next coach going to do better for kotoko to clinch the league title, they might as well lose the FA cup as well, it’s a rushed decision, i agree with you now 😂.
Popular Ghanaian media personality Ato Kwamena has lashed out at TV3 Ghana, accusing the media house of abandoning the very principles it once stood for. In a bold and direct social media post, Ato did not hold back his disappointment, describing the station as biased and unprofessional.
“There was a time in our history that this symbol stood for clarity and fairness. Now, this same symbol has thrown its principles to the dogs,” he stated, tagging TV3 Ghana’s official handle, @tv3_ghana.
His statement has triggered widespread discussions online, with many Ghanaians echoing similar sentiments about the current state of mainstream media in the country. According to Ato, the credibility and fairness that once defined TV3’s journalism are now in question.
“You are biased and your journalists seem unprofessional. Accept it and do better,” he added bluntly.
Though he did not cite specific incidents, the post has been interpreted as a reaction to TV3’s recent coverage of political and social issues, which some critics believe is skewed and lacking balance. Many netizens have since joined the conversation, praising Ato for speaking out and calling for greater accountability in the media space.
Others, however, have defended the network, suggesting that Ato’s comments may have been driven by personal bias or frustration over a particular report.
This isn’t the first time TV3 has come under public scrutiny. Over the past few years, the station has faced several accusations of biased reporting, especially during election periods and major national debates. While the management of TV3 has on various occasions reaffirmed their commitment to fair and balanced journalism, the backlash from influential voices like Ato Kwamena paints a different picture.
Media experts have also weighed in, noting that with growing citizen awareness and social media influence, traditional media houses must strive harder to maintain credibility and neutrality. In today’s digital age, one misstep can cost a brand its trust and following.
As the dust settles, Ghanaians are watching closely to see how TV3 responds—whether they will address the concerns or ignore them altogether.
How do you feel about this Remark from Ato Kwamena ,do you see it the right way or he’s just a political grimace. Share your ideas below.
According to a report from GhanaWeb, Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, has claimed that he was subjected to intimidation during the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Gbande alleged that the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) was repeatedly used against him under the former government’s watch.
“A month before the elections, they tried all possible means, including spiritual efforts, but they didn’t succeed. They tried to use the NIB and GRA to frustrate me, but it didn’t work,” he said.
Speaking during a televised interview on GHOne TV on April 21, 2025, which was later shared online, he detailed instances of what he described as targeted harassment.
He recalled confronting the former head of the NIB, Nana Attobrah Quaicoe, over the issue, warning him about the consequences of their strained interactions.
Gbande, who also serves as Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed frustration over efforts he believed were made to hinder him in the lead-up to the last elections.
He also accused the previous administration of demolishing his properties, further worsening his situation at the time.
According to Gbande, these actions were part of broader attempts to suppress and frustrate him during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s tenure.

A press conference recently held by a group identifying as the “Concerned and Aggrieved Youth of the NDC” over the delayed selection of a District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Kpandai District has been condemned by a group calling themselves the Real Concerned Youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the area.
In a press conference held on Monday, April 21, at the constituency party office in Kpandai, the Real Concerned Youth issued a statement clarifying that their intention was not to attack anyone but to promote unity and uphold the values that bind the NDC party in the district.
They emphasised their commitment to defending the party’s integrity and ensuring due process in the DCE selection.
The youth, led by Janfour Benipoumchie, reminded the public that the power to appoint a District Chief Executive rests solely with the President of the Republic. Their position, as the Real Concerned Youth of the NDC in Kpandai, is clear and principled: “The President has the right to appoint any qualified, competent, and loyal member of the party from the three shortlisted candidates, should he deem them fit,”
“In fact, we want to remind them that 17 party members in total applied for the DCE position when the three names were published by Tamale radio. The remaining 14 aspirants and their numerous supporters did not rise up in protest. Were they fools? Don’t they also have followers? Couldn’t they have destabilised the party? They did not because they respected the process. Even though it did not go their way, they still respected the process and kept faith. If those 14 had reacted with the same energy and resistance being shown now, would the three shortlisted individuals have had the peace of mind to travel to Accra for vetting? This shows the maturity and discipline of the remaining 14 aspirants. That is what we call respect and love for the party,” Janfour Benipoumchie said.
The youth condemned the use of derogatory language, such as “weak,” “unpopular,” or claims that someone had been “smuggled” into the process, calling such statements unfortunate, inaccurate, disrespectful, and misleading.
“Just take a look at those referring to the party leadership as weak, unpopular, and smuggled. Who among them possesses the qualities that are closer to the rank and file of the party in Kpandai? Every single individual who showed interest in this contest is a proud member of our party and has served in various capacities, sacrificed, and earned the right to be appointed as the DCE of Kpandai. We call on our colleagues to stop these baseless attacks and personal insults. We shall gain nothing by threatening each other. If anything, we weaken our party and give power to our opponents to use against us,” he said.
The youth also condemned the recent attack on the Constituency Chairman, Mr. Kwame Bawa, popularly known as “Who Knows”, in the press conference held by the allegedly aggrieved youth on 20th April.
They described this attack as unnecessary and disrespectful, noting that disagreements with a leader’s stance should always be addressed with respect and dignity, to ensure the unity of the party.
The Real Concerned Youth criticised calls for the resignation of the Constituency Chairman, suggesting that such actions only served the interests of a few individuals, not the masses.
“Accusing the Constituency Chairman of betraying the constituency simply because you disagree with the process does not reflect the values of the NDC. The NDC is bigger than a few individuals’ interests. We also take serious issue with the threat issued to the President that if the President does not choose from the three names, the NDC in Kpandai will be ‘dead and buried.’ How can a few individuals from a polling station we always lose threaten the movement to appoint an individual of their interest as the DCE?” Janfour added.
They assured the regional and national leadership that the views of the Real Concerned Youth in Kpandai represented the majority of NDC members in the district. They made it clear that the voices of the self-proclaimed aggrieved youth, who had not even won their own polling station, should not be taken seriously.
The Real Concerned NDC Youth in Kpandai expressed confidence that the NDC in the district is alive, strong, and reshaping. They called for the appointment of a DCE who would support the resetting agenda of President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government—someone who could play a role in moving the district forward, regardless of whether they were from the original shortlist.
The youth also reiterated their support for the careful and thoughtful approach taken by the national leadership, as outlined by the National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who had addressed the issue of delays in MMDCE appointments.
They reminded everyone that the leadership has received multiple petitions and concerns from across the country and is taking its time to vet, consult, and appoint the most suitable candidate.
In conclusion, the Real Concerned NDC Youth in Kpandai called for unity within the party and urged their colleagues to focus on the party’s success rather than individual interests. They pledged their full support for whoever is appointed as DCE, provided the candidate is NDC, and called on all party members in Kpandai to do the same.
They called on the President, the National Chairman, and other executives of the party to disregard the press conference held by the allegedly aggrieved youth, stating that it was “misinforming, misleading, and ultimately selfish.”
