The KNUST optometry student who sells ‘pure water’ to fund his education

A 20-year-old Level 500 Doctor of Optometry student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Chopel Danie, has earned massive admiration, not only for his academic ambition but also for funding his education through the sale of sachet water.

Known in the community as “Doctor H2O”, he began selling water in 2019, after completing senior high school.

With limited financial support, he took it upon himself to work and save towards his university education, he told 3news.com.

“This is what I’ve been doing to support my parents since 2019,” Daniel shared. “Since I completed SHS in 2021, this has been how I raised money to buy my admission form. I mostly feel shy, but my profit is always worth more than any form of mockery,” he stated.

Beyond selling, he has a mission to inspire other young people as he travels extensively across various markets in Ghana.

He has urged them to find honest means to support their families and resist temptations such as internet fraud and crime.

“I try my best to preach to the youth to be more productive in supporting their parents rather than pulling guns and frauding people,” he said.

Daniel’s long-term goal is to establish a water production company, provide clean water for the public and also offer employment to the vulnerable youth on the street.

Cheap food near gutters comes with high risks of contamination

0

Dr Nana Ama Frimpomaa Agyapong, a Lecturer at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, University of Cape Coast (UCC), has cautioned Ghanaians against patronising food sold near gutters, particularly cooked rice or “waakye” they consider to be cheaper and more delicious.

She warned that such foods were highly prone to contamination, exposing consumers to serious foodborne diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera.

“Food sold near gutters may seem cheaper and tastier, but such environments are highly contaminated with filth, bacteria and harmful pathogens that can easily pollute food, leading to serious foodborne diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, and dysentery.”

Speaking at a symposium on “advocacy for mandatory front-of-pack warning labelling in Ghana,” Dr Agyapong emphasised the health risks associated with consuming food from unhygienic environments.

It was organised by Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND) in collaboration with SEND Ghana to educate students of UCC on healthy and unhealthy diets and also chart the course for a proposed policy framework on Front-of-package warning labelling and Nutrition Profiling Models.

“The gutters often contain sewage, refuse and stagnant water, which attract flies and breed germs,” Dr Agyapong noted, adding that choosing safe, hygienic food was not about taste or price, but about protecting one’s health and that of their families.

She encouraged Ghanaians to adopt healthier eating habits by incorporating more vegetables such as garden eggs, kontomire and turkey berries (Kwahu sosaa), as well as eating at least one fruit a day.

Dr Agyapong further proposed buying fruits in season or in bulk to make them more affordable for balanced diet.

Other speakers at the forum, including Prof Kingsley Asare Preko, Vice Dean at the School of Medical Sciences, UCC, said food hygiene, particularly the front of- pack labelling advocacy aligned with the broader national public health goals to reduce non-communicable diseases linked to poor diet and food safety.

He highlighted the importance of food safety and nutrition education in preventing illnesses that often stemmed from contaminated street foods.

Prof Preko said food safety transcended political affiliation, gender and social status, highlighting its critical importance to the well-being of all citizens and its role in accelerating national development.

He advocated the enactment and support of legislation, mandating front-of-pack nutrition labelling, underscoring its benefits as a tool to promote healthier food choices and enhance transparency in the food industry, thereby protecting consumers.

SEND Ghana, a pro-poor policy advocates that sponsored the programme, called on the government to boost the school feeding grant per pupil, stressing that only with this increase could children consistently enjoy hot, nutritious, well-balanced meals, at least, once a day.

Ms Baaba Sam, representative of SEND Ghana, explained that the symposium was to empower Ghanaians to take charge of their nutritional needs, adding that wholesome diet was essential not just for physical growth but also for sharpening young minds, directly elevating academic success and overall health.

“Every Ghanaian should be able to take charge of his or her nutritional needs by identifying a healthy balanced diet from unhealthy one,” she stressed.

Dr Agyapong urged stakeholders to support the programme with funding to help fulfil its mission to eradicate hunger and malnutrition among school children to sustain their health and learning potentials.

“We urge the government to significantly raise the school feeding grant to ensure every child savours balanced meal, tackling malnutrition issues like stunted growth head-on and unlock brighter educational futures nationwide.”

Ntim Fordjour slams NDC appointees over lavish spending, calls for accountability

0

Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, has launched a scathing attack on appointees of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of excessive spending and unexplained wealth after just 120 days in office.

In a post shared on social media, the MP alleged that some individuals—whom he claims have never held formal employment—are publicly flaunting expensive gadgets and luxury vehicles, including a $450,000 Range Rover Autobiography.

He argued that the value of these items could instead be used to build classroom blocks in their communities.

Ntim Fordjour criticised what he described as a “toothless” Code of Conduct, arguing that it fails to hold such officials accountable.

He also mocked NDC supporters for enduring hardship under the same leadership they defend online.

“You worked, they’re chopping!” Fordjour stated, urging citizens to demand transparency and accountability from government appointees.

He announced that the university will intensify its focus on action-based research, particularly in areas of urgent national importance such as maternal health, infectious diseases, and mental healthcare.

“We must bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and community impact,” Prof. Kwawukume stated.

“You’d Have Praised Him If We Won” — Ursula Owusu Fires at NPP Members Blaming Akufo-Addo

0

Former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has hit out at members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have blamed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the party’s recent electoral misfortunes.

According to ModernGhana, In a social media post, the outspoken legislator expressed disappointment in what she described as a wave of unjust criticism being directed at the President.

According to her, many of those attacking Akufo-Addo today would have hailed him had the party emerged victorious in the elections. “Thank you to all of you who are busy vilifying him today and blaming him for our defeat,” she remarked.

Owusu-Ekuful revealed the President’s long-standing commitment to the NPP, both in and out of government. She noted that Akufo-Addo played a pivotal role in keeping the party united during their years in opposition and continued to support it financially even while in power.

The former Minister dismissed claims that the President undermined the campaign of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, calling such accusations “illogical.”

She pointed out that Akufo-Addo not only provided leadership but also offered consistent financial support to constituencies, regional offices, and Members of Parliament.

His backing, she suggested, went beyond political strategy—it was personal sacrifice.

Highlighting key achievements during his tenure, such as improvements in electricity, education, job creation, and road infrastructure, she questioned the party’s internal loyalty.

“If we don’t appreciate the efforts of people like Akufo-Addo, is the NPP worth dying for?” she said.

‘Illegal mining is not NPP or NDC, it’s a national disaster’ – Obiri Boahen

0

Former Deputy General Secretary of NPP, Nana Obiri Boahen Former Deputy General Secretary of NPP, Nana Obiri Boahen

Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has called for a non-partisan approach to tackling illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking in on Kasapa 102.5 FM, Nana Obiri Boahen stated that illegal mining should not be politicised, noting that both the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP have failed to adequately address the menace.

“Illegal mining is not a partisan matter. It is a general problem we are facing as a country,” he said.

He stressed that not all mining activities are illegal and expressed concern over the tendency to label licensed miners as galamsey operators.

“When someone has a license to mine, why do we describe the person as an illegal miner?” he questioned, urging the public and media to make clear distinctions.

Reflecting on the political landscape, the lawyer criticised both major parties for their inconsistency in addressing the issue.

“When the NPP was in power, the opposition was loud in fighting galamsey, even calling for a state of emergency. Now that the NDC is in power, the problem persists, yet they have not declared a state of emergency,” he said.

Nana Obiri Boahen noted that the NDC has been in office for over 120 days, yet the government has not taken decisive emergency action against illegal mining, raising concerns about the sincerity of political leaders.

“This should let Ghanaians know that our democracy is untruthful and dishonest,” he remarked.

Pope Leo appeals for no more war in first Sunday address

0

Pope Leo XIV appealed for “no more war” in a message to world powers during his first Sunday, May 11, address at the Vatican.

Reflecting on current conflicts, the newly selected pontiff called for a “lasting peace” in the war in Ukraine, a ceasefire in Gaza, and welcomed Saturday’s agreement to end recent hostilities between India and Pakistan.

He said he was “deeply hurt” by events in Gaza, expressed hope for a “lasting accord” between India and Pakistan, and wished for a “authentic, true and lasting peace” in Ukraine.

The Pope also recited the Regina Caeli prayer, in honour of the Virgin Mary, to the crowd in St Peter’s Square.

Pope Leo was chosen as the new leader of the Catholic Church on Thursday, following a two-day conclave in Vatican City and the death of his predecessor, Pope Francis.

On Saturday, he visited a shrine outside Rome and then prayed before Francis’ tomb inside the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Pope Leo will be formally inaugurated at a mass in St Peter’s Square next week on 18 May.

Speaking from the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, he said: “The immense tragedy of the Second World War ended 80 years ago… now we’re facing the tragedy of a third world war in pieces.

“I would also like to address the powerful people of the world, repeating the always-current call: ‘no more war’.”

The pontiff continued: “I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people.

“May whatever is possible be done to reach an authentic, true and lasting peace as quickly as possible. May all the prisoners be freed. May children return to their families.

“And I am deeply hurt by what is happening in the Gaza Strip.

“May a ceasefire immediately come into effect. May humanitarian aid be allowed into the civilian population, and may all hostages be freed.

He went on: “I was happy to hear, on the other hand, that there was a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and I hope that through the coming negotiations we might soon come to a lasting accord.”

His remarks come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, set out competing plans for a peace process to bring the three-year invasion of Ukraine to an end.

In the Middle East, Israel has cut off all humanitarian aid entering Gaza and resumed its military offensive in the Palestinian territory following the collapse of a two-month ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement.

Meanwhile, India and Pakistan agreed to a tentative ceasefire on Saturday after days of cross-border military strikes that followed an attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir on 22 April.

It has been a busy week for the pontiff, who held his first Mass as Pope in the Sistine Chapel on Friday before speaking to cardinals on Saturday.

During this meeting, he described himself as an unworthy choice for Pope and vowed to continue the “precious legacy” of his predecessor.

He highlighted the importance of missionary work and discussion, as well as care for those he called the “least and the rejected”.

He explained he had chosen the name Leo after a 19th-century Pope known for his teaching on social justice.

The new Pope also suggested that the development of artificial intelligence and other advances meant the church was necessary today for the defence of human dignity and justice.

“Peace be with you all,” Pope Leo XIV says in his first speech

He is due to hold an audience with the media on Monday ahead of his inauguration next Sunday.

As part of that mass, he will deliver a homily in the presence of numerous heads of state and dignitaries.

The 69-year-old is the 267th occupant of the throne of St Peter, and the first American to become a pontiff. He will lead members of the Catholic Church’s global community of 1.4bn people.

Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, he worked for many years as a missionary in Peru before being made an archbishop there. He also has Peruvian nationality.

Although Leo was born in the US, the Vatican described him as the second pope from the Americas. Pope Francis, from Argentina, was the first.

Pope Leo is widely seen as a moderate who can offer “continuity” and “unity” following the death of his predecessor last month.

The new pontiff is believed to have shared Francis’ views on migrants, the poor and the environment.

In his first speech, he told the crowds he wanted “to walk together with you as a united Church searching all together for peace and justice”.

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has opened up about a deeply personal and spiritual experience during a turbulent period in his life in 2015.

In an interview with broadcaster Kafui Dey on May 9,2025, the Effutu MP shared how his faith in God sustained him through financial and professional hardship.

Afenyo-Markin revealed that during this time, he felt his career was under threat and his life had been turned upside down.

“The teachings of the Catholic Church and the Methodist church stayed with me, and so did the Methodist hymns. They became my source of strength,” he said.

Describing the emotional depth of his crisis, he recalled a moment when he believed he had been set up and feared the end of his career. But his mum encouraged him to pray.

“I remember my mother telling me, ‘Let’s pray.’ That moment gave me hope,” he shared.

During one of those difficult nights, he said he had a powerful spiritual encounter.

“I suddenly began to sing a hymn my grandmother taught me. The room felt full of people, though I was alone. I felt chills. I had experienced God’s presence,” he recounted.

Afenyo-Markin emphasised that faith is essential during difficult times and encouraged people of all religions to trust in God.

“Whether you are a Muslim or Christian, Catholic or Methodist, serve God well and hold on to Him,” he urged.

He also shared that he once faced severe debt and business collapse. Seeking divine direction, he went to the Achimota Forest to pray, where he received a vision in a dream.

“God revealed Himself to me. It took ten years, but that vision eventually became reality,” he noted.

He encouraged others not to let guilt or past mistakes push them into depression.

“Take your mistakes to God in prayer. He is always ready to start something new with you. I have experienced my God, and I continue to pray for more strength to serve both Him and humanity,” he said.

German authorities shut major crypto exchange, seize €34m in assets

0

German police on Friday said they had shut down a major online platform for cryptocurrency exchanges, seizing €34 million ($38 million) in assets.

The eXch platform was taken down in late April, according to a statement from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Frankfurt prosecutor’s office.

Authorities confiscated €34 million in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin and Dash, representing the third-largest seizure of crypto assets in the BKA’s history.

The platform had been operational since 2014, allowing users to exchange cryptocurrencies.

Users were not required to identify themselves, with the platform explicitly advertising itself as not implementing measures against money laundering.

An estimated $1.9 billion had been exchanged on the platform, which was accessible on both the regular internet and the dark net.

The platform’s operators are suspected of having facilitated money laundering and running a criminal trading platform.

The operators had announced they would shut down the service on May 1, but authorities intervened to close the platform on April 30, enabling them to secure more than 8 terabytes of data.

Ntim Fordjour attacks Sammy Gyamfi over viral video of him dashing money to Agradaa

0

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour (L) Sammy Gyamfi (R) Reverend John Ntim Fordjour (L) Sammy Gyamfi (R)

Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has launched a sharp criticism against Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Acting Chief Executive Officer for GoldBod.

The attack centers on a viral video depicting the NDC stalwart dashing money to preacher, Nana Agradaa.

In a post on his official X account on May 11, 2025, the legislator lambasted Sammy Gyamfi, accusing him of apparent double standards.

This criticism comes in light of the NDC’s recent emphasis on austerity during their address on the party’s 120-day social contract with Ghanaians.

“In just 120 days they’re arrogantly and opulently sharing dollars in public, having stashed millions of cocaine dollars under their beds. These are people who have never worked a day in their lives in any company,” Rev Ntim Fordjour’s post stated.

He further accused the Acting CEO of GoldBod of a clear breach of his own government’s Code of Conduct.

“They’ve suddenly acquired and driving around $450,000 Range Rover Autobiography in less than 120 days in office. Yet all these are being done on the back of ‘toothless’ Code of Conduct which cannot and will not be applied,” he added.

The video which was posted by an X account user identified as itzMe on May 10, 2025, showed Sammy Gyamfi enter his car to dole out an undisclosed amount of money for Nana Agradaa.

Rev Ntim Fordjour’s recent strong condemnation of Gyamfi based on this viral video.

Gifting dollars when cedi is appreciating unjustifiable

CEO of Goldbod, Sammy Gyamfi CEO of Goldbod, Sammy Gyamfi

Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Constituency, Ras Mubarak, has criticized Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of Goldbod, over a viral social media video showing him gifting an undisclosed amount of dollars to fetish priestess turned pastor, Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Agradaa.

Mubarak argued that such actions could undermine the value of the local currency and have serious consequences for the economy.

In a Facebook post sighted by GhanaWeb, he stated that Sammy Gyamfi’s actions could be interpreted as a lack of confidence in the cedi, despite its recent appreciation.

He urged government office holders to demonstrate confidence in the cedi and the economy, discouraging the practice of giving away forex.

“For government office holders, it’s expected that they prioritize national interests and show confidence in our country’s economy and currency. You cannot justify or defend a public office holder giving away forex, especially when the cedi is performing well. Even if the foreign currency is well-earned, such actions could weaken the local currency and economy,” part of his post read.

“Already, we are struggling with schools, hotels, and property owners charging in USD. Sammy Gyamfi’s poor judgment could be seen as a lack of confidence in the cedi and a contradiction of government regulations. This could negatively impact the cedi’s value and stability,” he added.

Ras Mubarak ‘orders’ GRA to chase Agradaa to pay gift tax on dollars cash out

Following Agradaa’s receipt of dollars from the Chief Executive Officer of Goldbod, Sammy Gyamfi, former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Constituency, Ras Mubarak, has called on the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to ensure she pays the required gift tax on the amount received.

He stated that the payment of gift tax is enshrined in law, and Agradaa must fulfill her tax obligations.

In Facebook post sighted by GhanaWeb, the former MP said, “On Mama Pat ‘Agradaa,’ she has to pay gift tax. It’s the law. The Ghana Revenue Authority must go after Agradaa for the tax component on the gift.”

His comment follows a viral social media video showing Sammy Gyamfi gifting Agradaa an undisclosed amount of dollars.

Mubarak also argued that Sammy Gyamfi’s actions could undermine the value of the local currency and negatively impact the economy.

Meanwhile, Sammy Gyamfi has apologized for his actions, stating that his intent was to assist those in need.

Sammy Gyamfi apologises over dollar gift to Agradaa

0

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has issued a public apology following widespread backlash over a cash donation he made to former fetish priestess-turned-evangelist, Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

The apology comes after a video surfaced on social media showing Mr. Gyamfi handing over dollars to Nana Agradaa during an event. The gesture sparked criticism from members of the public and political supporters, many of whom expressed disappointment over his association with the controversial figure.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, May 11, Mr. Gyamfi described the donation as a “private act of kindness” and admitted he had not anticipated it becoming public. He called the situation “unfortunate and regrettable” and extended a heartfelt apology to those offended by his actions.

“I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space,” he wrote.

“To all such comrades, I am sincerely sorry for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.”

Mr. Gyamfi also clarified that the gesture was not politically motivated but rather in line with his personal values of helping those in need.

He reaffirmed his commitment to public service, stating, “My view of public office as a privilege to serve society, solve problems, and help others has not changed. I remain focused on the task entrusted to me by His Excellency, the President, for the development of our country.”

He thanked those who had offered counsel and support, and wished all mothers a happy Mother’s Day.

Read below the full statement by Sammy Gyamfi

Folks, I have taken notice of the wave of criticisms against my person in the last 24 hours.

To clarify, this was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and life-long custom of lending a helping hand to people in need.

I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable.

I must say that, I understand the uproar that this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by same. To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.

My profound appreciation goes to all those who have reached out to counsel and encourage me. I’m most grateful for your solidarity.

Let me state however, that my view of public office as a privilege to serve society, solve problems and help others, has not changed.

I remain focused on the task entrusted to me by His Excellency, the President for the development of our country.

Stay blessed and have a blissful Sunday. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out here.

President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday morning visited the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang in London.

The Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has been in London for some weeks now after she was taken ill on Friday, March 28, 2025, and was first admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra the following day for medical evaluation.

Her condition sparked public concern, given her central role in the current administration.

In a statement, the government confirmed that the Vice President had received the required treatment and was in stable condition.

The statement further noted that doctors had recommended additional medical evaluation abroad as a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring a complete recovery.

Following the advice, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commenced a three-week medical leave on April 7, 2025.

The Vice President’s leave has been dedicated to her recuperation and overall well-being, with expectations of her return to active duty in the coming weeks, President Mahama stated on April 24, 2025 when he gave an update on the Vice President’s health, while speaking at the official launch of the government’s nationwide sanitary pad distribution initiative.

On Sunday morning [May 11], President Mahama shared a photo of himself and the Vice President on social media with “a Special Mother’s Day” greeting.

President Mahama wrote: “A special Mother’s Day greeting to my Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, whom I had the pleasure of visiting earlier this morning.

“She is taking a deserved rest after recovering from illness and looking forward to resuming her duties soon,” the President added.

“To her and all Ghanaian mothers, I say Happy Mother’s Day,” President Mahama wrote.

Adu-Boahene’s unauthorised disclosures breach Oath of Secrecy – Adawudu  | Ghana News Agency

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni, GNA

Accra, May 11, GNA – Mr Victor Adawudu, a private legal practitioner, said Mr Kwabena Adu-Boahene, former National Signals Bureau Director General, potentially breached the oath of secrecy by divulging unauthorised information to the public, regarding his role.

Speaking on a current affairs programme on Saturday, Mr Adawudu referenced the oath of secrecy public office holders swore, which prohibited the direct or indirect communication of matters during their tenure, except permitted by law.

He emphasised that there were legal repercussions for divulging such information without authorisation.

His caution comes against the backdrop of a recent publication by Mr Adu-Boahene in relation to the alleged embezzlement of funds.

In a letter dated May 6, 2025, to the National Security Coordinator, Mr Adu-Boahene stated that contrary to the claims by the Attorney General that he had embezzled some funds, the said the funds were earmarked for national security operations.

However, Mr Adawudu raised concerns about the legality of the disbursement, saying they were not officially sanctioned.

He said such disbursements were within the established protocols within the National Signals Bureau and the broader national security apparatus.

Mr. Adawudu said financial disbursements were subject to oversight by various bodies, including the National Security Council, the relevant minister, and the finance and administration departments within the National Signals Bureau.

Budgets for security intelligence operations, he noted, were also subject to parliamentary approval and auditing by the Auditor General.

Mr Adawudu also addressed Mr Adu-Boahene’sclaims about disbursements to political opponents and parliamentarians.

He suggested that any collaboration with opposition parties by national security agencies typically involved intelligence gathering rather than direct financial support to parties.

Regarding payments to parliamentarians, MrAdawudu explained that such instances often related to facilitating the approval of essential legislative instruments when budgetary constraints existed.

He suggested that Mr Adu-Boahene reserved his explanations for the appropriate legal forum.

John Mahama visits Prof Opoku-Agyemang; provides update on her health

0

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has visited Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

In a Mother’s Day post shared via social media, the president indicated that she is currently taking her deserved rest after recuperating from an illness.

He indicated that the Vice President cannot wait to come back to continue serving the people of Ghana.

Prof Dzakadzie never resigned from NPP – Makafui Kofi Woanyah

0

The Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Makafui Kofi Woanyah, has indicated that the embattled Prof Yayra Dzakadzie never resigned from the NPP.

According to him, it is unfortunate for Prof Dzakadzie and his cohorts to attempt to mislead the public, exhibiting traits of greed and ingratitude towards President Akufo-Addo and the NPP.

“Prof Dzakadzie should be seen as a dangerous element if he wants to go on this tangent, because you have been part of this party and enjoyed all the goodies and now wants to reject it because it is in opposition?”, he said in a rejoinder copied to Myjoyonline.com.

He explained that the letter being circulated in social and traditional media was a doctored copy of the actual letter tendered to his office in August 2020.

He said that Prof Dzakadzie only stated his intentions to withdraw from the NPP parliamentary primary race in the Anlo Constituency for unknown reasons in the letter, and didn’t utter a word about resigning from the party.

He questioned why Prof Dzakadzie would wish the party well in the letter if he really wanted to exit the NPP.

Mr. Woanyah said that in the original letter, Prof Dzakedzie started that “’I, Yayra Dzakadzie, write to formally inform your good office that I do not intend to contest as a candidate in the parliamentary primaries in Anlo Constituency anymore.’”

Whereas the doctored letter stated that “’I, Yayra Drakadzie, write to formally inform your good office that I do not intend to contest as a candidate in the parliamentary primaries in Anlo Constituency anymore and give notice of my resignation from the party.”

“So, looking at the content of both letters, Prof Dzakadzie and his people are only trying to mislead the public in order to gain political favors from the governing NDC. He never tendered a resignation letter but a letter indicating his withdrawal from the parliamentary primaries”, Mr. Woanyah further explained.

Mr. Woanyah questioned why President Akufo-Addo would appoint Prof Dzakadzie as the Director of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, Deputy Director General for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and subsequently as the Director-General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) in 2024, if he had truly resigned from the NPP in August 2020.

He expressed anguish at the attempt by Prof Dzakadzie to denounce the NPP after meriting such appointments from President Akufo-Addo, scheming to find favors from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President Mahama.

He condemned the act and requested Prof Dzakadzie to desist from such “mischievous acts”, which would tarnish his reputation, academic and political career.

Giving Agradaa dollar bills was just a kind gesture for someone in need – Sammy Gyamfi

0

Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi has defended his decision to dole out cash to Evangelist Mama Pat.

He sees the gesture as a kind one and part of his daily and lifelong custom of lending a helping hand to people in need.

However, he used the opportunity to apologize to members of his political party who were hurt by the gesture, considering the fact that they do not have access to such opportunities when they have worked hard to bring the party to power.

Your actions could devalue the cedi

Former Kumbungu MP, Ras Mubarak Former Kumbungu MP, Ras Mubarak

Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Constituency, Ras Mubarak, has criticised Chief Executive Officer of Goldbod, Sammy Gyamfi, over a viral video showing him gifting an undisclosed amount of dollars to Evangelist, Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

Ras Mubarak argued that such actions could undermine the value of the local currency and have serious consequences for the economy.

“Even if the foreign currency is well-earned, such actions could weaken the local currency and economy, Already, we are struggling with schools, hotels, and property owners charging in USD,” parts of his post read.

He added, “Sammy Gyamfi’s poor judgment could be seen as a lack of confidence in the cedi and a contradiction of government regulations. This could negatively impact the cedi’s value and stability.”

Sammy Gyamfi messed up for gifting Agradaa dollars while party members are hungry – Criss Waddle

Ghanaian musician Criss Waddle Ghanaian musician Criss Waddle

Ghanaian musician Criss Waddle has strongly criticised Sammy Gyamfi for gifting Nana Agradaa wades of dollar notes.

Recently, a video surfaced online showing Sammy Gyamfi and Nana Agradaa engaging in a brief conversation.

In the footage, Agradaa was heard requesting some dollar notes from Sammy Gyamfi’s vehicle.

Moments later, the NDC politician was seen counting several dollar bills, which Agradaa eventually snatched and flaunted to bystanders.

The video has since sparked massive public backlash, with many questioning the appropriateness of the gesture.

Reacting to the incident, Criss Waddle has taken to social media to express disappointment.

He has labelled Sammy Gyamfi’s actions as unprofessional and insensitive, especially given the economic struggles faced by grassroots members of the NDC.

“Let’s not make excuses for Sammy Gyamfi, we need the best behaviour from our politicians, he messed up big time. Having dollars in the car alone is bad for your position, let alone gifting it out when some grass-root party members self no chop,” he said.

Criss Waddle emphasised that such actions are unacceptable and could damage public trust in party leadership, especially among loyal supporters facing hardship.

Ntim Fordjour attacks Sammy Gyamfi over ‘old’ video

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour (L) Sammy Gyamfi (R) Reverend John Ntim Fordjour (L) Sammy Gyamfi (R)

Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has launched a sharp criticism against Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Acting Chief Executive Officer for GoldBod.

The attack centers on a viral video depicting the NDC stalwart distributing money to preacher, Nana Agradaa.

However, it is important to note that earlier media reports had indicated that the incident depicted in the video occurred in 2024.

Sammy Gyamfi himself addressed the footage during an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam programme on Monday, July 1, 2024.

At that time, Gyamfi clarified that the video was old and had been taken during a past visit to Miami with his wife, shortly after their wedding.

Rev Ntim Fordjour’s recent strong condemnation of Gyamfi based on this viral video surfaces nearly a year after the NDC communicator provided his explanation for the footage.

Poor black boy Marries 65 Year Old Woman, 7 Days Later He Discovers Her SECRET

The sun had nearly vanished beyond the crumbling rooftops of Detroit’s projects, casting a cold copper hue across the sky. Marcus sat silently on the front steps of his building, a wrench in hand, his grease-stained overalls soaked from a late drizzle. At just 23 years old, Marcus carried more weight than most men twice his age.

His mother had died when he was 10. His younger sister was lost to the foster care system. His father, once proud and strong, had disappeared into the streets and never returned. All that remained was the burden of poverty and the constant pressure to survive.

Marcus worked long shifts at a rundown auto garage owned by a grumpy old man who paid him in cash and expired snacks. He’d once tried to finish community college, but bills, street pressure, and hunger crushed that dream quickly. His days bled into nights and his nights into silence. Hope was a rare visitor.

That was until one evening when he received a strange letter. Not a call. Not a text. A handwritten envelope, slid under his…..Read Full Story Here.…………….

Adu-Boahene’s allegations must be probed – Kojo Asante

0

Dr. Kojo Asante, Director for Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), has called for a thorough investigation into the explosive claims made by former National Security official, Kwabena Adu-Boahene—but only if they are backed by credible evidence.

His comments follow the emergence of a memo written by Adu-Boahene to the National Security Coordinator, in which he alleged that over GH¢8 million was disbursed to opposition parties to support logistics for the 2024 general elections.

The memo also claims that GH¢49 million—currently the focus of a criminal case against Adu-Boahene—was used for covert national security operations. Additionally, GH¢5.1 million was reportedly spent on luxury vehicles for the office of the then president-elect.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 10, 2025, Dr. Asante cautioned that allegations suggesting inducements to state institutions—including Parliament—must be taken seriously, but only after verifying the facts.

“If this claim is substantiated, that payments were made to other state bodies, including Parliament, for the passing of legislation, as some sought a bribe or facilitation, those things have to be investigated.

“It has to be established that this is true, then we take the next step. Rather than the invitation to start going off on a tangent of investigations when the processes themselves to establish the facts have not been exhausted,” he said.

Dr. Asante also commented on the recent protests by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and affiliated groups in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo. He noted that the political tension surrounding the judiciary stems from longstanding governance issues.

“What started all these, you can go as far back as 2013, is a governance problem. It is the governance arrangement around the discretion that the Chief Justice has when it comes to paneling on cases, for not having a cap on the number of justices and how those functions and power have been exercised, and the discussions these have generated among the political class, particularly around the position of bias around petitions.

“The history is very clear, once we started going to court to challenge the validity of elections, the Supreme Court became even more politicised. If we don’t find other non-legal ways of addressing this, it will become a real issue,” he added.

S&P upgrades Ghana’s credit rating to CCC+ on economic reform progress

0

S&P Global Ratings has upgraded Ghana’s foreign-currency credit rating from Selective Default to CCC+.

The agency’s decision, announced on Friday, May 9, 2025, reflects increasing investor confidence and acknowledges the positive strides made under the leadership of Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

S&P highlighted Ghana’s progress in tackling its debt challenges and stabilizing its economy following a period of financial strain.

A key factor in the upgrade was the near completion of negotiations with the country’s remaining private lenders, a development that has eased considerable pressure on government finances. The successful Eurobond exchange in October 2024, which occurred prior to the current administration, was also noted.

The rating agency also commended the government’s commitment to implementing crucial reforms, which are beginning to yield tangible results. Notably, inflation, although still elevated at 22%, is showing a downward trend, supported by a strengthening cedi and reduced energy costs.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has spearheaded several significant changes aimed at improving fiscal management. These include updates to financial laws, the reintroduction of spending regulations, and concrete steps towards establishing an independent fiscal council. These measures are designed to foster greater accountability and efficiency in the management of public funds.

Despite inheriting substantial outstanding debts, President Mahama’s government, which assumed office 122 days ago following the December 2024 elections, has prioritized expenditure cuts over increasing taxes. This approach aligns with the conditions of Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The government has set ambitious fiscal targets, aiming for a budget surplus of 1.5% of GDP in 2025 and committing to limit annual spending growth to below 10% for the next four years. This represents a significant shift from the average annual spending growth of 28% experienced over the preceding two decades.

S&P projects a substantial reduction in Ghana’s public debt, net of cash reserves, from 71.4% of GDP in 2024 to a more sustainable 47.4% by 2028. Furthermore, interest payments, which previously consumed nearly half of the government’s revenue, have decreased to approximately 25% following the debt restructuring initiatives.

While acknowledging remaining risks, such as potential increases in spending during the 2024 election year and ongoing global economic uncertainties, S&P emphasized that Ghana’s improved economic standing, consistent reforms, and positive growth prospects underpin the improved credit rating.

The agency also recognized Ghana’s resilient economic growth of 5.7% in 2024, driven by strong performances in the industrial and services sectors. However, they cautioned about the long-term threats to cocoa production posed by illegal gold mining activities.

Foreign Affairs Minister personally delivers passports to applicants in Accra

0

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, May 10, GNA – Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, took to the streets of Accra, Friday, to personally deliver new chip-embedded passports to applicants.

The move, a historic shift in government service delivery, is expected to ease the stress of Ghanaians in acquiring passports.

The new delivery system comes as the Ministry dispatches over 5,000 passports nationwide this week via Ghana Post, building on the successful rollout of the advanced chip-embedded biometric passport.

The applicants recieved their passports barely two weeks after application.

This door-to-door delivery initiative, implemented in partnership with Ghana Post, forms part of sweeping reforms by the Passport Reforms Committee established by the Foreign Affairs Minister on his first day in office.

Clad in pristine white long-sleeve kaftan, the Minister surprised the applicants by arriving at their workplaces to hand-deliver their travel documents.

“I wanted to experience firsthand the joy of Ghanaians receiving this essential service without stress,” Mr Ablakwa said as he placed passports into the hands of grateful recipients.

The Minister revealed that his personal participation was meant to send a clear message that the era of frustrated citizens making endless trips to passport offices was over.

Among those who received their passports was Ms Doreen Klutse, a staff of the Ghana Library Authority, and Mr Abdul Razak Osmanu, a businessman and resident of Pig Farm in Accra.

Ms Klutse said: “I didn’t know my passport will be delivered to me personally. All I knew was that when your time is due, you will have to go to the application centre personally to claim it. But when I recieved a text and a call from Ghana Post, i was surprised.”

She further exclaimed: “Even more shocking was receiving my passport from the Foreign Minister as the first for delivery service initiative.”

Three phone snatchers jailed 19 years for robbery

0

A Ho Circuit Court has sentenced three individuals to a total of 19-years imprisonment for robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

The convicted persons – Mercy Sokpe (22), Atsu Kamasa (25), and Godfred Dzidonu (19) – were found guilty of robbing a 21-year-old, Elijah Torgbedzi of his iPhone 6s, valued at GH¢700, near the Ho Central Market on May 4, 2025.

The court presided over by Mr Osman Abdul-Hakeem sentenced Sokpe to three years with Kamasa and Dzidonu each serving eight years for the two charges after pleading guilty to the charges.

According to the facts presented in court, Mercy Sokpe initiated the attack by approaching the victim under the pretence of wanting to take a selfie with his phone.

While pretending to take the photo, she secretly signaled her accomplices, who quickly joined her and assaulted the victim with a pair of scissors before snatching the phone and fleeing.

The victim raised an alarm, leading to the arrest of Godfred Dzidonu, who was in possession of the stolen phone.

Police investigations subsequently led to the arrest of Mercy Sokpe and Atsu Kamasa from their hideouts in Ho.

The three suspects were arraigned before the Ho Circuit Court on May 9, where they pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

The court handed each of the three accused a sentence of three years for conspiracy to commit robbery.

In addition, Atsu Kamasa and Godfred Dzidonu received an extra five years each on the charge of robbery, bringing the total sentence to 19 years combined.
