See TGMA as a crusade stage to win souls – Nii Noi urges gospel artistes

Nii Noi has called on gospel musicians to see TGMA as a platform for spreading the word of God Nii Noi has called on gospel musicians to see TGMA as a platform for spreading the word of God

Ghanaian gospel music promoter Nii Noi has called on gospel musicians to see the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) as a platform for spreading the message of Christ.

Speaking in an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Nii Noi encouraged gospel artistes to embrace the TGMA stage as an opportunity for soul-winning, rather than viewing it as a secular awards scheme.

“We need to see the TGMA scheme and its stage with all its importance. The scripture says, ‘Go into the world and win souls for me.’ When we are confined to our audience, that is, the church, how do we win souls?” he said.

He stressed that when gospel artistes are given the opportunity to perform at the TGMA, they must not take it lightly. According to the gospel music advocate, the moment should be treated as a spiritual opportunity.

“We need to take the scheme seriously, and even when billed to perform, we must consider it a platform for winning souls,” he stated.

Nii Noi further explained that everything gospel musicians do during the TGMA, from how they campaign for votes to how they appear on the red carpet, should reflect Christian values.

“Also, during the TGMA, when we solicit votes to win a category, grace the red carpet, and again get the chance to perform, these should reflect our Christian values. This is because they help win souls for Christ. We should attach seriousness to these things, just as we do with all other programmes in the gospel space,” he shared.

He then likened performing on the TGMA stage to mounting a crusade platform, urging gospel artistes to shift their mindset from self-promotion to promoting the message of Christ.

“For instance, if you get a slot to perform, have it at the back of your mind that you are performing at a crusade to win souls for Christ. It is not about your brand; it is about the brand Jesus. So mount the stage and make Jesus proud,” he noted.

When asked if he believes some gospel artistes stay away from the TGMA because they consider it secular, Nii Noi said he could neither confirm nor deny that view. However, he encouraged gospel musicians to see beyond such perceptions.

“I can’t confirm or deny that some gospel artistes don’t show enthusiasm for the TGMA because they see it as secular or evil, because I haven’t heard it personally. However, what I want them to know and understand is that the TGMA will not dent your brand as a gospel artiste,” he explained.

Nii Noi also highlighted the career growth of two top gospel artistes, Joe Mettle and Diana Hamilton, as proof that participating in the TGMA can yield positive results.

“It would be unfortunate for gospel musicians to overlook the benefits of the TGMA, especially when we see the clear growth in brands such as Joe Mettle before and after he won Artiste of the Year in 2017.

The same can be said for Diana Hamilton before and after 2021. Let’s analyse those changes together. TGMA serves as a propeller for your brand as a gospel artiste,” he said.

French President, Emmanuel Macron and wife, Brigitte Macron play videoFrench President, Emmanuel Macron and wife, Brigitte Macron

A video has surfaced online that appears to show the moment Brigitte Macron, wife of President Emmanuel Macron, ‘slapped’ her husband during a heated exchange on an official visit.

The viral video, filmed at Hanoi Airport in Vietnam on the evening of Sunday, May 25, 2025, shows President Macron through the aircraft door and captures Brigitte raising her hand toward his face, seemingly hitting him, while the French President looks surprised.

As the couple descends the stairs, Emmanuel Macron attempts to hold her hand, but she appears to ignore him.

The French President married Brigitte, his former La Providence high school teacher, in 2007.

They met during a theatre workshop she was leading when he was a 15-year-old student and she was a 39-year-old teacher.

His parents initially tried to separate the couple by sending him to Paris to complete his final year of schooling, as they believed the relationship was inappropriate due to his age.

We have the men? Johnnie Hughes dismantles NPP’s bravado over economic management

0

In Ghana’s political vocabulary, few phrases have become as infamous — or ironic — as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) boastful declaration: “We have the men.”
But in a searing critique on 3FM, broadcaster Johnnie Hughes tore into the hollowness of that claim, using sarcasm and real-world economic figures to argue that the NPP’s supposed economic ‘men’ left Ghanaians with little more than hardship and broken promises.
“You didn’t have to brag that you have the men,” Hughes began, echoing

National Day of Prayer will transform Ghana – Local Government Minister

0

The Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has described Ghana’s newly declared National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving as a pivotal moment that will usher in spiritual renewal and national progress.

Speaking at a thanksgiving service at the Church of Pentecost, Sakumono District — Sophia Cudjoe’s Temple — the Minister said the annual event, instituted by President John Dramani Mahama, is expected to bring about lasting transformation across both the spiritual and economic landscape of the country.

“The Thanksgiving will transform Ghana, move the country forward, stabilize the cedi, and allow President Mahama’s vision of resetting the national agenda to thrive,” Ahmed Ibrahim declared.

He further revealed that the observance will be decentralized and marked across all 16 regions, ensuring widespread participation and a unified call to prayer for the nation.

President Mahama has officially designated July 1st, which coincides with Republic Day, as Ghana’s National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving — to be celebrated annually.

Also addressing the congregation was Apostle Wilberforce Nkrumah Agyemang, Area Head of the Church of Pentecost in Teshie-Nungua.

He echoed the importance of the initiative, stating that “prayer is the key to everything,” and urged all Ghanaians to embrace the call to national prayer.

Apostle Agyemang also lauded Minister Ahmed Ibrahim for his commitment and diligence in overseeing three critical ministries under one portfolio, encouraging him to remain focused and steadfast in his duties.

Ghana will host a high-level Regional Planning Meeting for Operation KAFO VI from May 27 to 29, 2025, as part of efforts to intensify the fight against illicit firearms trafficking in West Africa.

In a statement, the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NASCA) stated that the initiative aims to dismantle arms networks and enhance regional security.

“The Accra meeting is being convened in response to growing security concerns in the region, particularly the spillover of terrorist threats toward the Gulf of Guinea and the persistent challenge of firearms proliferation.

“Serving as a preparatory platform ahead of the full operational launch of KAFO VI, the meeting will build on the lessons and successes of KAFO V and seek to coordinate joint efforts against firearms trafficking and associated threats throughout the West African region,” the statement noted.

NASCA expressed hope that the session will assist participating countries in identifying key border points for intervention.

“As countries in West Africa continue to confront the intertwined challenges of arms trafficking and violent extremism, this planning meeting marks an important milestone in ensuring a united and strategic response,” it added.

A New Government, Same Old Challenges

In 2024, Ghana’s ever-faithful political pendulum swung back, as it tends to do every eight years or so, gently nudging the National Democratic Congress (NDC) back into power after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) completed its full choreography on the governance stage. The baton passed hands, the banners changed color, and the speeches were dutifully dusted off and redeployed—hope, as always, made a grand entrance.

For the creative sector, there was cautious optimism that this change might finally be more than cosmetic. Artists, musicians, filmmakers, and cultural entrepreneurs dared to dream—again—that this time, someone in power might actually listen, invest, and deliver. But as the confetti settled and the sound of campaign drums faded into bureaucratic shuffling, reality began to sink in.

Four months into the NDC’s administration, what was billed as a renaissance is starting to look suspiciously like a rerun—complete with the usual suspects: recycled policies, recycled promises, and the ever-reliable “we’re still assessing the situation” press statement. The revolution that was advertised is beginning to resemble a reboot of an old series, just with updated fonts and a slightly better social media team.

To many in the creative industry, it feels like watching a well-worn play with a new cast but the same tired script. The paint may be fresh, but the walls are the same. And while hope hasn’t been entirely evicted, it’s definitely sleeping with one eye open.

The Black Star Experience: A Star is (Re)born… or Just Recast?

Launched with pomp and plenty of patriotic pageantry on May Day 2025 at the iconic Freedom and Justice Monument, the Black Star Experience strutted onto the national stage as the NDC’s glittering flagship initiative—an ambitious effort to reposition Ghana as Africa’s cultural crown jewel. Think year-round festivals, vibrant diaspora homecomings, curated history trails, and all the creative trimmings. On paper, it’s a masterstroke. But as many in the industry will tell you, the devil is always in the details—and in this case, the devil may have simply changed his outfit.

Scratch beneath the glossy brochures and ceremonial speeches, and a different narrative emerges. Insiders are whispering—some shouting—that this “experience” feels more like a rebranded rerun than a bold new chapter. “Same script, different title,” quipped one seasoned creative, who’s clearly seen enough administrations roll in with glittering slogans and roll out with nothing but selfies and unfinished pilot projects.

The creation of a new secretariat tucked neatly inside the presidency was meant to signal gravitas. Instead, it’s raised more than a few skeptical eyebrows. Why, critics ask, do we need yet another office—especially one that seems to mirror the mandates of the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture like a bureaucratic doppelgänger? Is this streamlining or simply stacking?

To many observers, it’s not so much a visionary leap as it is a redundancy roadshow—complete with overlapping job descriptions, circular consultations, and a chorus of creatives wondering if anyone’s actually listening. The Black Star may be back, but whether it’s rising or just rotating in orbit remains to be seen.

GHAMRO: Music Royalties Held Hostage

Meanwhile, Ghana’s music industry is stuck on pause. The Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) still lacks a valid operating license, revoked by the Attorney General over long-standing compliance failures. That includes ignoring key reforms recommended by a 2017 Mediation Committee, like structural transparency and financial accountability.

GHAMRO’s leadership insists politics is to blame. But whether it’s red tape or red flags, the musicians pay the price. No license means no royalties—only rising frustration among artists who feel abandoned by both their regulators and the new administration.

Demolition Blues: The Fantasy Dome Fiasco

As if that wasn’t enough, the creative sector was dealt a heavy blow with the abrupt demolition of the $25 million Fantasy Dome in Accra, despite a court injunction. Once a beacon of promise for large-scale events, the Dome’s destruction sent shockwaves through the industry. Entrepreneur Baba Sadiq called it a “monumental setback,” underscoring the government’s mixed signals on infrastructure investment.

To add insult to injury, plans to shutter the Grand Arena and the Palms by November have only deepened uncertainty. What was supposed to be a renaissance for creative spaces now feels more like a retreat.

Creative Sector or Creative Neglect?

Ghana’s creative industry has long punched above its weight—from music and film to fashion and festivals. It’s a cultural powerhouse and a source of livelihood for thousands. Yet the same obstacles persist: poor infrastructure, erratic funding, and a lack of political will.

When the NDC returned to power, many hoped it would prioritize the arts—not just as campaign candy, but as a serious economic and cultural pillar. So far, the results have been underwhelming.

Time for Talk to Meet Action

Rhetoric is no longer enough. The creative sector doesn’t need another committee, press release, or launch party. It needs action. Here’s what the NDC must do to walk its talk:

• Develop a Real Strategy: Create a comprehensive roadmap for the creative economy—one that’s driven by data, designed with stakeholder input, and backed by actual funding.

• Fix GHAMRO, Fast: Resolve the license crisis and put transparent systems in place so that musicians can earn what they’re owed.

• Invest in Infrastructure: Replace words with bricks. The sector needs performance venues, recording studios, and exhibition spaces—not bulldozers.

• Provide Real Funding: Support creatives with grants, soft loans, and tax incentives. Passion alone won’t pay the bills.

• Listen to the Industry: Bring creators to the table. Their insights are invaluable—and often, more grounded than government consultants.

The Bottom Line

Culture is not a luxury—it’s an economic engine, a source of national pride, and a powerful tool for soft power. The NDC’s Black Star Experience could still become a defining initiative. But without decisive action, it risks becoming yet another chapter in Ghana’s long saga of political showmanship and artistic sidelining.

The creative sector is watching, waiting—and increasingly weary of recycled promises. The question is no longer what will be done, but when. Ghana’s artists have shown resilience. It’s time their government matched it with results.

ECG losses threaten Ghana’s economic stability

0

Outgoing United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has raised serious concerns over the financial health of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), calling for immediate and comprehensive reforms to stabilise the utility provider.

In a yet-to-be-aired interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Ambassador Palmer described the ECG’s financial state as alarming, citing massive losses throughout the system.

“The ECG is bleeding, exchequer, and it’s bleeding more than we thought. When the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, spoke at the Economic Dialogue, he said $2.2 million a year, which is essentially at the scale of the IMF programme. There are losses either at the electricity poles or in the counting rooms, and they are enormous,” she said.

Ambassador Palmer welcomed recent steps by President John Dramani Mahama to address the issue, particularly the establishment of a panel to evaluate the ECG and propose necessary reforms.

“I was pleased to see President John Dramani Mahama announce a panel to evaluate ECG and what reforms are necessary, and I’m looking forward to seeing the results.”

She emphasised that these reforms are critical not just for Ghana’s economic stability but also to resolve the persistent power outages known locally as dumsor.

Palmer reiterated the importance of long-term structural changes to ensure the efficiency and financial viability of the ECG, warning that continued losses could jeopardise broader energy sector goals.

Why rush to social media? Minority questions Ablakwa over Washington Embassy saga

0

The Deputy Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Nana Kwame Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, has criticized Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for prematurely announcing the temporary closure of Ghana’s embassy in Washington, D.C., while investigations into a major corruption scandal are still ongoing.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News on May 26, he expressed concerns about how the closure and fraud allegations were publicly disclosed, particularly via social media.

“Investigations are ongoing. So why do you write on social media? That’s our point,” he said.

“This public declaration, especially coming from the minister himself, has the potential to severely damage Ghana’s reputation abroad.”

“Have you considered the cost of this so-called temporary closure to the country? Have you thought about the diplomatic consequences?” he asked.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry, led by Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced on social media the temporary closure of the Washington embassy effective Monday, May 26, 2025, describing it as part of a “comprehensive restructuring and systems overhaul.”

This followed a special audit that uncovered fraudulent activity linked to a local staff member, Fred Kwarteng, who allegedly created an unauthorized payment portal to collect illegal fees from passport applicants.

The fees, ranging between $29.75 and $60, were being charged without approval under Ghana’s Fees and Charges Act, the minister revealed.

Mr. Ayeh argued that labeling the embassy as a hub of fraud could undermine confidence among international partners.

“Do you think stakeholders — like the U.S. government — would be comfortable dealing with an embassy that Ghana’s own minister has declared fraudulent? This is why we insist the minister’s approach was flawed.”

He clarified that the Minority is not opposed to sanctions or disciplinary actions against wrongdoers but expressed concerns over the decision to shut down the entire diplomatic mission and how it was communicated.

“Let me first place on record that the Minority is not against sanctions or punishment of wrongdoers — never. But we feel there should have been more consultation, more diplomacy, and tactfulness in handling this matter,” Mr. Ayeh stressed.

“To come out and say that because of a fraud allegation you are closing an entire embassy, which embodies a country in another land, we disagree. There are ways to uphold standards without shutting down the embassy,” he added.

Ghana to exit IMF program in 2026 – President Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana plans to exit the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) program by 2026.

According to the President, his government is working diligently to meet all the targets set by the IMF, aiming to conclude the three-year Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement on schedule.

Speaking at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit in Accra on May 26, 2025, under the theme “Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Governance for a Sustainable Futuristic Economy,” President Mahama expressed optimism that the fourth review of the program, scheduled for June, will be successful.

Ghana entered into a $3 billion IMF-supported bailout in 2023 following a severe macroeconomic crisis marked by unsustainable debt levels, rapid cedi depreciation, soaring inflation, and a loss of access to international capital markets.

The agreement was designed to restore macroeconomic stability, ensure debt sustainability, and lay the foundation for inclusive growth.

So far, the economy is showing signs of recovery, with inflation gradually declining, the cedi stabilising, and investor confidence on the rise.

President Mahama stated that, following Ghana’s exit from the IMF program in 2026, the government will “reopen international and domestic capital markets” to support long-term growth and development financing.

He further noted that the country will leverage current favorable trends in global commodity markets, particularly rising gold and cocoa prices, to shore up foreign exchange reserves and build fiscal buffers against external shocks.

Kwabena Adu-Boahene, former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau Kwabena Adu-Boahene, former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau

Justice John Nyadu Nyante, the presiding judge in the trial of former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has ruled that plea bargain discussions can only proceed once full disclosures have been filed and served on the defense.

This directive came after the prosecution requested additional time to submit the necessary documents.

Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem-Sai informed the court on Monday, May 26, 2025, that the delay was due to the unavailability of a key investigator who had been unwell.

He assured the court that the investigator would be available by Friday, May 30, 2025.

The judge subsequently ordered that all disclosures be filed by Monday, June 2, 2025.

Although the court did not publicly explain the directive, it followed a private meeting involving Justice Nyante, Deputy Attorney General Dr Srem-Sai, and defense lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea.

The meeting was convened at the request of the Deputy Attorney General.

The case has been adjourned to June 11, 2025, for a case management conference.

Kwabena Adu-Boahene, along with three other individuals, including his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, has been charged with a total of ten offenses, including stealing, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

“Every vehicle is linked to a Ghana Card; we don’t need manual toll gates anymore” – President Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has stressed the need for Ghana to adopt a digital tolling system.

Delivering the Keynote address at the 9th edition of the Ghana CEO Summit, President Mahama cited Ghana’s current technological advancements, which have seen the country’s national identity card (Ghana Card) linked to several services, including driver’s licenses and vehicle registration.

He emphasised that such innovations will catalyse change.

“The good thing today is that every car is linked to the owner’s Ghana card, and so we don’t need to have the old toll gates and those cards that you stand and open and all that.”

“We will just go straight to digitalise”, President Mahama added.

According to the President, the digital tolling system would work seamlessly, with cameras capturing images of vehicles crossing toll points, such as the East Legon bridge.

“If it’s 1 cedi, if you cross the East Legon bridge, a picture of your car is taken and a bill will be sent to you and deductions made through your mobile money or your bank account.”

This proposed system aims to eliminate the need for physical toll gates, reducing congestion and increasing efficiency.

By leveraging Ghana’s existing digital infrastructure, the government can provide a more convenient and streamlined experience for drivers, especially at a time when the government is considering the reintroduction of road tolls.

The 9th Ghana CEO Summit was held on the theme “Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable Futuristic Economy.”

Erik ten Hag appointed Bayer Leverkusen head coach

Simon Rolfes (L) and Erik ten Hag (R) during his unveiling Simon Rolfes (L) and Erik ten Hag (R) during his unveiling

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has officially taken over as head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, signing a two-year deal with the German club.

The 55-year-old Dutchman steps into the role vacated by Xabi Alonso, who was unveiled as the new Real Madrid boss on Sunday, May 24, 2025.

This appointment marks Ten Hag’s return to the dugout after his departure from Manchester United in October.

During his two-year spell at Old Trafford, he led the team to Carabao Cup and FA Cup triumphs but was dismissed with the club languishing in 14th place in the Premier League.

Before his stint in England, Ten Hag enjoyed a highly successful period with Ajax, where he became known for his tactical acumen and player development.

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes welcomed the appointment with high praise, citing Ten Hag’s track record of domestic dominance and resilience in challenging conditions.

“With Erik ten Hag, we have brought in an experienced coach with impressive success on the pitch. With three league titles and two domestic cup wins, he and Ajax dominated Dutch football from 2018 to 2022. And Erik demonstrated his quality as a coach with the ensuing success at Manchester United under difficult circumstances at times,” Rolfes said.

Leverkusen enter a new chapter after a historic season under Alonso, which saw them claim a domestic double in 2023-24.

They followed up with a second-place finish in the Bundesliga this term, trailing only Bayern Munich.

Ten Hag is set to begin his new role officially on July 1, 2025. Reflecting on the opportunity, he expressed admiration for the club’s recent progress and shared his vision for the future.

“Leverkusen are one of the best clubs in Germany and also among the top clubs in Europe. I’ve come to Leverkusen to continue with the ambition shown in recent years. It’s an attractive challenge to set up something together in this period of change and develop an ambitious team,” he said.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor opened investigations into the allegations after Sarfo-Kantanka was seen in a viral video demanding a refund of monies he had allegedly paid to assembly members, supposedly to facilitate his approval after he was rejected for the second time.

Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka faced 26 corruption charges for allegedly giving out bribes to assembly members in the Juaben Municipal Assembly to facilitate his approval as Municipal Chief Executive when then President Akufo-Addo nominated him for the position.

The court sustained 23 counts and asked the accused’s lawyers to open their defence on the remaining three counts.

The High Court commenced the full trial against Sarfo-Kantanka on October 20, 2022, following the 2021 incident which saw him confront some members of the Assembly to demand a refund of monies paid to them to confirm him.

During the trial, the prosecution closed its case after calling three witnesses—all Assembly Members—who denied receiving any money from the nominee at the time.

Sarfo-Kantanka, in the course of the trial, pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was granted GH¢90,000 bail.

The presiding judge was later transferred but filed a case completion plan to enable her to conclude the matter.

In delivering her ruling, Justice Priscilla Dikro Ofori said there was no direct evidence linking the nominee’s demand for a refund to the alleged bribery, although he was captured in the viral video.

Counsel for the accused, Kwame Adom Appiah, said his client went through trauma during the trial.

“This Shouldn’t Be Taken Casually” – Van Vicker Reacts to On-Set Kick Incident Involving Godwin Nnadiekwe

Ghanaian actor Van Vicker has weighed in on the recent on-set incident where actor Godwin Nnadiekwe reportedly suffered internal bleeding after being kicked in the chest by colleague, Zubby Michael, during a movie scene. Read the story here

In a post shared on Instagram, Van Vicker described the headline as “extremely disquieting,” noting that he is yet to authenticate the claim.

He emphasised the importance of rehearsals for scenes that involve physical contact or violent actions, especially in the Nigerian film industry, where there are no insurance policies, stunt doubles, or protective rigging.

He stated that while some filmmakers believe rehearsals take away surprise elements or instinctive reactions, the safety of actors should come first.

According to him, proper rehearsals indicate that the production team is not being negligent, even if an accident still occurs.

He also called on industry stakeholders, media, and fans to treat the incident as a red flag and push for better safety measures on set.

Van Vicker concluded by stressing that actor safety is just as important as good sound, acting, or cinematography.

SHARE project making positive change in adolescents – research findings

0

By Anthony Adongo Apubeo

Bolgatanga, May 26, GNA – The implementation of the Sexual Health and Reproductive Education (SHARE) project in some districts in the Upper East Region, is making progress in promoting adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights.

A midterm evaluation of the five-year project (2021-2026) in beneficiary districts revealed increased adolescents’ access to accurate information regarding their sexuality which was helping them to make informed decisions to avoid risky behaviour.

These came to light during dissemination of findings of research in Navrongo ,conducted by Professor Duah Dwomoh, of the D&D Statistical Consulting Services Limited, the Consultant for the research.

Implemented by consortium led by Right To Play in partnership with WaterAid Ghana, Forum for African Women Educationalists Ghana (FAWE-Ghana) and FHI 360, with finding support

from the Global Affairs Canada, the project is being rolled in the Builsa North and Kassena-Nankana Municipalities, Kassena-Nankana West, and Bongo districts.

The project targets in- and out-of-school adolescents across the four districts, with the goal of empowering youth through SRHR education, gender equality initiatives, and access to youth-friendly services.

The findings revealed increase in the active participation of adolescent girls and young women in SRHR advocacy and social action initiatives, highlighting the growing confidence and leadership among young women.

“I know my rights and can speak up now,” said one adolescent girl during a focus group discussion, capturing the transformative effect the project has had on self-confidence and empowerment”, Professor Dwomoh stated.

The project’s integration of life skills training, such as menstrual pad-making, and gender-sensitive programming has helped to reduce stigma and fostering supportive environments in both schools and health facilities according to the findings.

The findings further revealed positive trend in community participation, with more caregivers and stakeholders attending SRHR-focused forums, indicating growing acceptance and openness around adolescent reproductive health topics, which had traditionally been taboo in many parts of Ghana.

Additionally, adolescents reported improved communication with parents on SRHR issues and demonstrated better negotiation skills in relationships, further contributing to their autonomy and safety.

The findings revealed that training of community health workers, teachers, and facility staff, as well as the establishment of peer-led youth clubs and advocacy networks, were already proving to be effective in sustaining SRHR engagement even beyond the project’s direct intervention.

Continued investment, community collaboration, and youth empowerment and inclusive campaigns to reduce stigma and increased awareness to enhance the outcomes and ensure lasting change are among recommendations of the findings

Mr Evans Sinkari, Program Director, Right To Play, said the findings suggested that the project was making some progress and the inputs and recommendations from the stakeholders would be taken into consideration to strengthen implementation for lasting change.

Ms Rita Abamah, Bongo District Girl Child Officer, said apart from preaching abstinence, there was the urgent need for increased concerted efforts to ensure that the adolescents were abreast with the use of contraceptives particularly condoms to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS.

Agradaa, husband discard court documents during first appearance

Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, also known as Agradaa Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, also known as Agradaa

A video of Evangelist Patricia Asiedua (Nana Agradaa), appearing in court amid her legal tussle with Empress Gifty has sparked a barrage of reactions on social media.

One would recall that on May 20, 2025, gospel musician Empress Gifty filed a GH₵20 million defamation lawsuit against Agradaa at the Tema High Court for allegedly making defamatory statements against her.

Following the lawsuit, Agradaa took to social media to mock the lawsuit, saying, “Any idiot can go to court,” in a post that drew massive reactions.

But in a couple of days after, a video has gone viral showing Agradaa’s first appearance at the Tema High Court. She was seen dressed in an all-white outfit, accompanied by her husband, who wore a navy blue suit.

The couple was captured exiting the court premises after being served with the writ of summons.

What has drawn the most attention, however, is the moment Agradaa and her husband were seen allegedly throwing the court documents, the writ of summons, onto the ground as they left the courthouse.

The act has stirred massive reactions online, with many netizens calling on the judiciary to take disciplinary action against the couple for what some describe as a show of disrespect to the court.

GWL warns residents to evacuate immediately to avert disaster

0

The Communications Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Stanley Martey, has cautioned residents in downstream communities to evacuate immediately to avoid disaster following a controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam.

In an interview on Joy FM, monitored by GhanaWeb on Monday, May 26, 2025, he stressed the need for affected residents to prioritise safety and heed evacuation advice as water levels continue to rise.

“As of this morning, the water level is around 45 feet. We have already opened two spill gates, each at six inches. However, if by midnight we observe more inflows pushing the level beyond 47 feet, we will be forced to open all three spill gates immediately. So please evacuate,” he warned.

Stanley Martey noted that engagements have already been held with local landlords’ associations to highlight the urgency of the situation.

“We have spoken to the Landlords’ Association. Everyone must ensure there are no structures in unauthorised areas. Even if you believe your home is on safe ground, your neighbour’s negligence can still put your life and property at risk. So never assume you are safe when others around you act irresponsibly,” he said.

Ghana Water Company has begun the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam due to rising water levels caused by the onset of the rains.

Some communities at risk include Tetegu, Oblogo, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, and Panbros Salt.

NDPC, Korean team brief Buffer Stock CEO on $9.5m agribusiness project

0

The visit aimed to brief the NAFCO boss on a new five-year agriculture intervention project The visit aimed to brief the NAFCO boss on a new five-year agriculture intervention project

A joint team from the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) and the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has held discussions with the Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) in Accra.

The visit aimed to brief the NAFCO boss on a new five-year agriculture intervention project dubbed “Strengthening of Agribusiness Value Chain for Local Economic Development in Ghana.”

The project, which begins this year in the Central and Volta Regions, seeks to increase the average income of farmers and create jobs in the targeted areas by enhancing the agribusiness value chain.

Valued at US$ 9.5 million, the initiative is being financed by the Korean government with counterpart support from the Government of Ghana. It focuses on three widely consumed vegetables, tomatoes, onions, and peppers, with the goal of increasing self-sufficiency rates by 2029, when the project ends.

The Chief Executive Officer of NAFCO, George Abradu-Otoo, told the visiting team that the government is taking urgent steps to reduce and ultimately curb what he described as the worrying phenomenon of post-harvest losses experienced by farmers across the country.

Sharing some startling statistics, Abradu-Otoo revealed that in some cases, as much as 60% of harvested crops are lost, leading to significant financial setbacks for farmers.

Post-harvest losses in Ghana are a major challenge, estimated to cost the country approximately US$ 1.9 billion annually. These losses occur at various points along the value chain, from harvest to consumption, and are attributed to poor post-harvest handling, inadequate storage, and lack of infrastructure. Estimates suggest that losses can range from 20% to 50% of total production.

Abradu-Otoo cited various causes of increasing post-harvest losses, including on-farm inefficiencies such as improper threshing, winnowing, and drying of grains. Other contributing factors include poor harvesting timing, adverse climatic conditions, improper handling practices, and market access challenges.

He noted that the government is addressing these issues under the Feed Ghana Programme and commended the Korean government for its longstanding support to Ghana.

According to him, any substantial reduction in post-harvest losses would contribute to price stability and help reduce inflation as the government works to reset the broader economy.

An official from the NDPC, Richard Tweneboah Kodua, stated that the project seeks to complement the government’s flagship agricultural intervention, the Feed Ghana Programme, and to consolidate national development gains.

The Deputy Country Director of KOICA, Eunsoo Oh, added that the project will introduce new technologies, improved seed varieties, and expert knowledge to enhance local farming, harvesting, and processing of the targeted crops.

‘It is obvious’ – Dame confirms being Wontumi’s lawyer after Appiah-Kubi reportedly pulled out

Former Attorney General Godfred Dame was captured at the CID head office with Wontumi on Monday

Former Attorney General Godfred Dame has confirmed that he is the lead legal representative for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who is currently under investigation by the police.

Dame was seen accompanying Chairman Wontumi when he arrived at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in Accra on Monday, May 26, 2025.

When asked whether he was representing the NPP regional chairman, whose home was raided by national security operatives on Friday, May 23, Dame responded, “It is obvious.”

The former Attorney General declined to comment further on the case against his client, stating, “No comment, we haven’t started yet.”

According to Channel One TV, Dame assumed the legal representation after Wontumi’s initial lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, stepped aside.

Prior to Dame’s arrival at the CID headquarters, Appiah-Kubi was seen there preparing for Wontumi’s arrival and told the media he was handling preliminary formalities. However, when Wontumi showed up, it was Dame who led him into the CID office.

While Chairman Wontumi has not been formally charged, a report by Channel One TV claims that the raid on his residence was connected to a GH¢50 million payment made by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) in the final days of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.

The report further alleges that the payment was made to Hallmark Civil Engineering, a company owned by Wontumi, despite a directive from then-Chief of Staff Julius Debrah to suspend contract payments during the transition period.

I’m committed to backing Ghana’s future MCC eligibility

0

The outgoing United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has reiterated her commitment to supporting Ghana’s eligibility for a future Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC), should one become available.

In a yet-to-be-aired interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Ambassador Palmer reflected on past challenges with the second MCC Compact and voiced her personal disappointment over the cancellation of more than $190 million due to implementation setbacks.

“I told former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that I would work with him to see if we could get another compact. Because there were some missteps on the second compact, and we had to cancel a 190 million dollars,” she said.

“To my personal disappointment and the disappointment of the Millennium Challenge Compact… Right now, we don’t know what form the Compact will take.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding a potential new compact, Ambassador Palmer reaffirmed her dedication to Ghana’s future participation.

“I remain committed to helping Ghana if a new Compact becomes available, to helping Ghana become eligible.”

She commended Ghana’s performance in key areas such as governance and anti-corruption—important criteria for MCC eligibility—but stressed that reforming the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) must be a priority.

“The true factors that are essential to eligibility or passing a scorecard are governing well on behalf of your people, which Ghana does, maintaining a certain score on anti-corruption, which Ghana does, and it’s important to keep that up. And also to demonstrate that the last Compact was successful,” she said.

Highlighting the urgency of action within ECG, Ambassador Palmer warned that the utility provider’s mounting losses threaten both the country’s economic health and its eligibility for international support.

“A key element is the financial viability of the ECG, because the ECG is bleeding, and it’s bleeding more than we thought. There are losses either at the electricity poles or in the counting rooms that are enormous.”

She emphasized that reforms at ECG are not only vital for MCC considerations but for Ghana’s long-term economic and energy stability.

“Reforms of ECG are going to be good for the Ghanaian economy, not just an incentive for the Compact. It puts the country in a position to benefit from whatever assistance is available.

Ambassador Palmer concluded by stressing the need for sustainable, long-term solutions to Ghana’s energy challenges as intermittent power supply continues to affect the country.

Judge orders full disclosure before plea deal in Adu Boahene trial

0

Justice John Nyadu Nyante, the presiding judge in the trial of former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director Kwabena Adu Boahene, has ruled that any discussions regarding a plea bargain can only proceed after full disclosures have been filed and served on the defense.

This directive came after the prosecution requested additional time to submit the necessary documents.

Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai informed the court that the delay was due to the unavailability of a key investigator who had been unwell.

He assured the court, however, that the investigator would be available by Friday, May 30, 2025.

Following this assurance, the court ordered that all disclosures must be filed by Monday, June 2, 2025.

While the judge did not publicly explain the reasoning behind the directive, it followed a private sidebar meeting involving Justice Nyante, Dr. Srem-Sai, and defense lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea. The meeting was held at the request of the Deputy Attorney General.

The case has been adjourned to June 11 for a case management conference.

Social media feels like a marketplace – Tulenkey

Tulenkey has stated that he limits his time on social media Tulenkey has stated that he limits his time on social media

Ghanaian rapper Tulenkey has stated that he limits his time on social media because it disrupts his focus and peace of mind.

In an interview on Hitz FM, the “Proud Fvck Boys” hitmaker said social media platforms can be overwhelming, especially when notifications keep pulling attention away from important tasks.

“Imagine being at work and a notification pops up, maybe from someone trying to distract you. Most people have all their alerts on, and that’s a big part of the problem. WhatsApp should be like email; you open it when you’re ready, not because your phone buzzed,” he said.

Tulenkey explained that once a person checks their phone, it can take about seven minutes to fully regain focus. This interruption, he noted, reduces concentration and leads to time being wasted.

To manage this, he mentioned that he has turned off all app notifications on his phone and relies heavily on the “Do Not Disturb” feature, especially in the mornings.

“When I wake up, my phone stays on ‘Do Not Disturb’ until noon because that’s when I get most of my work done,” he shared.

The rapper also described how social media can feel chaotic, likening it to stepping into a noisy market when one has just come from a quiet place.

“There’s always something going on. It’s too much. If you’ve been calm and focused, and then you open social media, it hits you like entering a marketplace. We’re used to that constant rush, even when we’re in the washroom, we’re scrolling. Our minds never get a break,” he added.

Abuakwa South MP leads landmark study on obesity intervention gaps in Sub-Saharan Africa

0

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr Kingsley Agyemang Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr Kingsley Agyemang

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, who is also a public health lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has led a landmark international study exposing critical gaps in obesity intervention research across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

The study, titled “Effectiveness of Obesity Interventions in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses,” was recently published in PLOS ONE, a high-impact, peer-reviewed journal.

This comprehensive review and meta-analysis screened over 419,000 academic records, with only seven studies from South Africa meeting the inclusion criteria.

It found that structured physical activity, particularly aerobic and resistance training, reduced overweight and obesity rates by about 34%.

However, these interventions showed no statistically significant impact on waist circumference, a key measure of abdominal obesity.

Dr Agyemang emphasised the narrow geographical scope of the data.

“The fact that all qualifying studies came from one country tells us how far we still need to go. Most of sub-Saharan Africa is operating in a research vacuum when it comes to tackling obesity,” he noted.

He stressed the need for locally relevant solutions to address the obesity challenge.

“Sub-Saharan Africa is battling an obesity epidemic, but without the evidence base to guide interventions. We need solutions that are culturally appropriate and grounded in local realities,” he added.

Professor Peter Agyei-Baffour, Dean of the School of Public Health at KNUST, acknowledged the research as a cutting-edge contribution and highlighted its broader public health implications.

“With obesity threatening both health outcomes and economic development in SSA, we cannot continue relying on borrowed models. This study is a vital step toward building our own evidence base,” he stated.

BoG dismisses speculation of ‘engineered’ appreciation

0

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has revealed that the cedi’s recent 24.1% appreciation against the US dollar is entirely market-driven, dismissing speculation that the Bank intervened.

According to him, claims that the Bank of Ghana is engineering the cedi’s appreciation or supporting it with international reserves are completely false.

Speaking at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit on Monday, May 26, 2025, Dr Asiama attributed the appreciation to a combination of disciplined monetary policy, targeted foreign exchange auction reforms, enhanced remittance channels, and stricter market surveillance.

“Our cedi has appreciated by 24.1% against the US dollar on a year-to-date basis. Now, colleagues, let me emphasise that the central bank is not—and the ‘not’ is in capital letters, using its international reserves to support the cedi. Nor are we engineering an appreciation in the cedi that would be unsustainable,” he stated.

Despite setbacks linked to the government’s broader efforts to stabilise the economy, the Governor stressed that the measures implemented by the central bank are not short-term fixes but long-term structural reforms aimed at maintaining stability in the foreign exchange market.

“It’s all market-driven, and the strengthening of the currency reflects a blend of disciplined monetary policy, tailored foreign exchange auction reforms, enhanced remittance channels, and stricter market surveillance. These are not mere short-term interventions,” he explained.

Dr Asiama’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the cedi’s strong performance in 2025, with financial analysts urging robust policies to prevent further depreciation in the final quarter of the year.

Likewise, Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku—currently in excellent form—will be unavailable for the Porcupine Warriors’ fixture against Bibiani GoldStars.

Ghana will begin their Unity Cup campaign with a high-profile clash against Nigeria on May 28 at the Gtech Community Stadium, home of English Premier League side Brentford. The losing side will feature in a third-place playoff, while the winner advances to the final on May 31.

Thirty years ago, Abu Safian Osman captained Hohoe United to Ghana’s Division One League, earning a place in the country’s second-tier competition.

Fast forward to 2025, and history has remarkably repeated itself, only this time through his son, Safian Osman Zaid.

The younger Osman, now captain of Hohoe United Football Club (HUFC), has led the club into the Ghana Premier League for the first time in its rebranded history, achieving a historic promotion that has brought pride and joy to the Volta Region.

On Sunday, May 25, 2025, HUFC sealed their place in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League with a convincing 3-1 victory over Inter Allies at the Hohoe Stadium.

Goals from Anass Ganiu, Faruk Mohammed, and captain Safian Osman secured the decisive win that crowned them champions of the Division One League Zone Three.

Founded in 2023 after Liberty Professionals officially withdrew from competitive football, Hohoe United emerged under a new leadership structure spearheaded by John-Peter Amewu.

The new administration acquired Liberty’s Division One League slot, with the Ghana Football Association approving the transition.

This move saw HUFC inherit Liberty’s rights, obligations, and position in the league, but with a renewed focus and community spirit.

In just two years, the team has gone from formation to top-flight promotion, a remarkable achievement in Ghanaian football.

Their 3-1 win against Inter Allies marked their 22nd victory in 29 games, underlining a season built on tactical discipline, consistent performances, and attacking flair.

Captain Safian Osman’s leadership has not only been pivotal on the pitch but also symbolic. Wearing the armband once held by his father in the 1990s, Osman has carried the weight of legacy and turned it into triumph.

His goal in the final match served as both a personal milestone and a moment of poetic justice, finishing the job his father started, but this time, elevating the team to Ghana’s elite level.

From father to son, Hohoe United’s rise to the Premier League is more than just a footballing success story, it is a generational legacy fulfilled and a moment of pride for the people of Hohoe and the entire Volta Region.

Unemployed allied health professionals threaten protest over delayed postings

0

The Coalition of Unemployed Allied Health Professionals (COUAHP) has threatened a nationwide demonstration if their concerns are neglected and not given the due employment they deserve.

According to the health professionals, their financial, emotional and psychological needs continue to worsen as they have remained at home without employment since 2019 after graduating from various accredited training institutions and following through with all due processes.

Addressing a press conference in Kumasi on Monday, May 26, Hussein Abdul Baaki, PRO for the Coalition, highlighted that they will not hesitate to hit the streets to press home their demands and their right to employment in subsequent days if they are not given clearance and posting as required.

According to him, several petitions to relevant stakeholders have yielded no results, a further indication of neglect.
They decry that since the current government has highlighted provisions of the needs of the youth as a priority, they look forward to an intervention since they are part of the youthful population.

“Continued neglect of our plight is a threat to public health, social stability and the future of health professions in Ghana. If no decisive action is taken to address these issues, we will embark on a massive nationwide demonstration to demand our right to employment, fairness and dignity,” he said.

The PRO also called for a retraction of a comment by MP for Garu in the Upper East Region, Thomas Anabah, who they said has downplayed the legitimate concerns of unemployed Allied Health Professionals, many of whom have been waiting for posting since 2019.

“We want to address a comment made by a member of parliament. We are deeply disappointed in the recent comment made by Honourable, a medical doctor who chose to downplay the concerns of Allied Health Professionals, many of whom have been waiting for posting as far back as 2019. We condemn his comment and call on him to retract his comment and issue a public apology,”he added

Presidency and key ministries exempted from electricity bill payments

The government has approved a policy exempting selected strategic institutions from paying electricity bills, following a cabinet meeting chaired by President John Dramani Mahama.

The initiative is designed to ensure uninterrupted operations of essential national services, particularly in the security, health, and education sectors.

Announcing the decision, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, said, “The policy is intended to enhance accountability in energy consumption while safeguarding the operational resilience of critical government institutions.”

He explained that the Ministry of Finance will absorb electricity costs for the listed institutions through their approved budgetary allocations.

The exemption applies to the Office of the President, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Education.

Mr Jinapor clarified that only core operational units would benefit from the exemption.

“This does not include auxiliary and non-essential facilities,” he emphasised.

In the education sector, only classrooms, universities, laboratories, lecture halls, and research facilities are covered, excluding dormitories and recreational spaces.

For health, the exemption includes hospitals, theatres, blood banks, laboratories, and wards, but not staff residences.

In the defence sector, it is limited to installations such as military intelligence and emergency systems.

Within the interior ministry, it covers police and emergency response units alone.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) have been tasked with stepping up revenue collection from non-exempt institutions.

They have also been authorised to disconnect electricity from any such entity with unpaid bills.

Mr Jinapor added, “This measure reflects our commitment to financial discipline in the energy sector and our responsibility to ensure a stable power supply for all Ghanaians.”
