His comments come following his withdrawal from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Thank You Tour following the stabbing of a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

It was attended by more than 350 guests and esteemed participants, including investors, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and development partners, who explored new frontiers for venture capital and private equity investment in Ghana and across Africa.
The conference also witnessed the launch of the Ghana Pensions and Insurance Industry Venture Capital / Private Equity Compact, spearheaded by Yaw Appiah Lartey, a Financial Advisory Partner at Deloitte Ghana, in collaboration with GVCA and inaugural signatories.
The launch of the Compact marks a historic step toward bridging the financing gap for SMEs by channeling institutional capital into the venture ecosystem.
Also launched at the conference was the Venture Capital Trust Fund (VCTF) Impact Report 2004-2024, which showcased the Fund’s achievements in mobilising investments across sectors such as technology, agribusiness, healthcare, and climate resilience.
Mr Kwamina Asomaning, Managing Director of Stanbic Bank Ghana, addressed both the promise and the challenges of Ghana’s investment ecosystem.
He emphasised the importance of strengthening investor confidence and aligning regulatory frameworks to stimulate long-term capital flow into high-impact sectors.

Ghana’s controversial “cash and carry” healthcare system, which requires patients to pay out-of-pocket for medical services, is facing renewed criticism as stakeholders push for urgent reforms.
The system has long been blamed for denying essential healthcare to the poor, resulting in preventable deaths and severe financial hardship.
Calls for change were recently amplified by Hon. David Boakye Ansah, Assembly Member for the Agyeimpra Electoral Area in Offinso, who underscored the dire consequences of the current model.
“It is deeply worrying that hospitals often deny patients crucial medical care due to their inability to immediately pay for readily available medications,” he said.
“This unfortunately leads to avoidable deaths within our hospitals. Many individuals, who are potential family heads and valuable contributors to Ghana, are lost because of these conditions.”
His remarks came during a heartfelt ceremony where UK-based Ghanaian philanthropist Richard Agyare paid the medical bills of thirteen stranded patients at Offinso St. Patrick’s Hospital.
The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), introduced in 2003, was intended to remove financial barriers to healthcare access. However, persistent issues—such as delays in reimbursements to health facilities—have forced many hospitals to revert to upfront payments, putting vulnerable patients at even greater risk.
Government officials and policymakers are now being urged to prioritize healthcare reform, with growing calls that no Ghanaian should be denied medical treatment due to financial constraints.
Following the intervention, the management of St. Patrick’s Hospital expressed profound gratitude to the philanthropist for his timely support.
“We frequently encounter patients in need of financial assistance, and this act of kindness will go a long way in supporting them,” said Pearl Bemah Poku, a manager at the facility.
The beneficiaries, many of whom had lost hope of leaving the hospital due to unpaid bills, shared emotional accounts of their struggles. Some said even affording basic necessities like food had become nearly impossible, making their hospitalization an even more painful experience.
“I had given up, thinking I would be stuck here forever. Mr. Agyare’s kindness has given me a second chance at life,” said one patient.
While individual acts of generosity offer short-term relief, stakeholders agree that long-term, systemic reform is the only sustainable solution. Advocates are now pushing for strengthened NHIS funding, improved healthcare financing, and policies that ensure equitable access to medical services.
As Ghana continues its pursuit of universal health coverage, the plight of patients under the cash-and-carry system remains a stark reminder of the urgent need for lasting change.

Ghanaian Afrobeat sensation, King Promise, has made it clear that he believes he deserves to win ‘Artiste of the Year’ at the forthcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) scheduled for May 10, 2025.
In an interview with digital creator Kwadwo Sheldon, the “Terminator” hitmaker declared that based on the work he has put in over the past year, there should be no debate about who walks away with the top honour.
“The Artiste of the Year this year we for chop am because we have done everything this year that we are supposed to do. This is non-negotiable, and it’s not disrespect to anybody else in the category,” he said.
According to King Promise, winning the ultimate prize will go beyond just adding a trophy to his shelf, rather, it would be about carrying the hopes of his fans and using that energy to elevate Ghanaian music globally.
“It will be an honour…and I will be more inspired knowing my people are betting on me and I will also let them know they can count on me to take them to the world,” he added.
King Promise is among seven nominees for the ‘Artiste of the Year’ category, competing alongside artistes such as Stonebwoy, Joe Mettle, Black Sherif, King Paluta, Kweku Smoke, and Team Eternity.
Despite King Promise having a stellar year in the previous edition of the Ghana Music Awards, he ultimately did not clinch the ‘Artiste of the Year’ title in 2024.
The award went to Stonebwoy on the night, who secured his second win in this category, having first won it in 2015.
Nevertheless, King Promise’s achievements at the 2024 TGMAs were noteworthy.
He took home several awards, including Best Afropop Song for “Terminator,” Best Afropop/Afrobeats Artiste, and Telecel Most Popular Song of the Year, also for “Terminator.”

Renowned Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, has significantly contributed GH¢500,000 to the newly launched ‘Mahama Cares’ initiative, aimed at providing access to quality but affordable healthcare to vulnerable communities across the country.
Alhaji Agongo donated on Tuesday during the launch of the programme in Accra, where several prominent business leaders and supporters gathered to pledge their commitment to the social welfare and health initiative.
President John Mahama, who launched the initiative, also donated his six-month salary in advance to be used to fund the programme.

Gold prices falls as dollar strengthens
Gold prices fell on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, as the US dollar strengthened amid signs of easing trade tensions.
Investors are now awaiting key US economic data that could influence the Federal Reserve’s next move on interest rates.
Spot gold declined by 0.4% to $3,302.58/oz as of 4:30 AM GMT, while US gold futures dropped 0.7% to $3,310.70/oz.
According to Nicholas Frappell, Global Head of Institutional Markets at ABC Refinery, the US dollar index gained 0.1% against major currencies, making gold more expensive for holders of other currencies and exerting downward pressure on bullion.
“There was a minor recovery in broad dollar strength, which led to a little bit of retracement in gold,” he noted.
This decline follows a recent rally that pushed gold prices to an all-time high of $3,500.05/oz on April 22, fueled by global economic uncertainty and market volatility.
The pullback comes after US President Donald Trump signed two executive orders aimed at mitigating the impact of auto tariffs.
Additionally, the US trade team announced its first agreement with a foreign partner since the latest wave of tariffs began.
Investors are now closely watching for the release of key data, including the US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index later today and the nonfarm payrolls report due on Friday.
Markets are currently pricing in a total of 95 basis points in Fed rate cuts by the end of the year.

The ban on Taiwanese passport holders starts on April 30, 2025
Somalia’s ban on transit and entry of all Taiwanese passport holders has taken effect, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which accused China of pressuring the East African country into introducing the measures.
The ministry of the self-ruled island, claimed by China, said on Tuesday evening that Somalia’s civil aviation authority informed it last week of the new policy that came into force on Wednesday.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly protested Somalia’s action made under the instigation of China to restrict the travel freedom and safety of Taiwanese nationals and has demanded that the Somali government immediately revoke the notice,” it said.
The ministry also said Somalia cited United Nations Resolution 2758, which in 1971 called for member states to restore Beijing as the “only lawful representatives of China” to the body, and invoked the “one China” principle.
It “firmly rejected and strongly condemned” Somalia’s “misinterpretation” of the UN resolution, accusing Mogadishu of using it to “create the false impression that Taiwan is part of the People’s Republic of China”.
The move comes amid deepening ties between Taiwan and Somaliland, a breakaway region that declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognised by most of the world.
In 2020, the two self-governed territories opened de facto embassies in each other’s capitals, prompting anger in Mogadishu.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Guo Jiakun said the decision was a legitimate step to protect Somalia’s interests and demonstrates “that Somalia firmly abides by the one China principle”. Beijing “highly appreciates” the move and pledges its support for Mogadishu’s claim to Somaliland, he added.
He said China also opposes “any form of official exchange” between Taiwan and Somaliland.
Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, lost its UN seat to China in 1971, a year before it was evicted from the World Health Organisation.
While only 11 countries and the Vatican formally recognise Taiwan as a state, many – including the United States – maintain close unofficial ties.
China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under its control.
Taiwan’s state news agency, Focus Taiwan, said the Somalia travel restriction is unlikely to have much practical effect, noting that Taiwanese nationals rarely visit the country.
Citing government data, it said only 16 trips were made to Somalia by Taiwanese citizens between 2016 and February this year.

The confrontation, according to eyewitnesses, stemmed from the sharing of money given to the participants for their transportation.
While sharing the money, a macho man attempted to snatch the money away and in the ensuing struggling, he fired several warning shots and one of the members was stabbed.
The victim was rushed to the Suntreso Government Hospital but was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, for further treatment.
Mr Agyepong visited the victim at the KATH and later went to the Sofoline Police Station to file an official complaint.
Mr Agyepong later at a press conference in Kumasi, said he was withdrawing from the ongoing tour because of the violent attack on one of his supporters.
Meanwhile, Dr Bawumia and other members of the team is continuing the tour in some constituencies in the Ashanti region.
On Tuesday April 29, 2025, the team met delegates from the Atwima Mponua, Nwabiagya, Kwanwoma and others in the Atwima enclave at Abuakwa, to thank them for their support during the 2024 general elections.

As part of pragmatic efforts in addressing key challenges in environmental sustainability, agricultural innovation, youth unemployment, and inclusive development in Ghana, the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya, and its partners the MasterCard Foundation have launched the Nkabom Project.
The Nkabom Project designed to run for 10 years is expected to provide dignified and fulfilling work for three million young Ghanaians by 2030.
The project focuses on converting agricultural waste into valuable resources, advancing aquaculture practices through cutting-edge technology, and fostering sustainable, entrepreneurship-driven livelihoods for youth, women, and marginalised communities.
Addressing journalists at the inception launch in Koforidua, the Vice-Chancellor of UESD and Principal Investigator of the UESD Nkabom Project, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson, stated that the project will serve as a model for agro-waste transformation and aquaculture innovation in Ghana and beyond.
“The project is very keen for us as a university and it aligns with our visions and mission. The project gives us the key to really go into research and come up with how to deal with agro-waste and come up with products that will serve the community.
“Oftentimes, many think that most of the things that come out of agricultural products are waste, but how can we turn them into usable products? So, these things are useful for us. When it comes to aquaculture, we are told that the Eastern Region contributes 40% of inland fishing to the nation. So, this puts us good position to train people and give them skills,” he stated.
Prof. Nyarko-Sampson further revealed that the project offers the University an opportunity to provide expert training and education in agro-waste management across the country and said that the University is expected to roll out academic programmes on effective agro-waste management by the end of the year.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor of UESD and Project Coordinator of the Nkabom Project, Prof. Edward Wiafe Debrah, observed that the project will generate employment opportunities for Ghanaians by equipping them with skills in adding value to agro-waste.
He emphasised that the training would be inclusive and open to all Ghanaians.
“We are having tertiary programmes that will train people not to go and beg for job, but they will have entrepreneurial skills where they can use this agro-waste processing or aquaculture technology to end an income,” he stated.

Tamale, April 30, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama is expected to officially launch the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) in Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region, on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
The NAP is a flagship initiative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government aimed at tackling youth unemployment through technical and vocational skills development.
It forms a core part of the administration’s job creation and human capital development strategy.
The programme, as outlined in the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, offers free training in various trades and crafts, leading to formal certification.
Beneficiaries will be supported with start-up capital and equipment to establish their own businesses upon graduation.
A dedicated Business Growth Apprenticeship module will link TVET graduates with established industries for mentorship and enterprise development.
The government also plans to introduce reforms to the TVET system by incorporating digital skills, soft skills, and entrepreneurial training.
In support of the programme, the 2025 Budget Statement has allocated GH¢300 million, with a target to train and empower over 100,000 young people across the country.
The programme also includes the establishment of regional Centres of Excellence to provide hands-on training in simulated work environments.
The launch in Tamale is expected to draw stakeholders from the education, industry, and youth sectors, and marks the beginning of nationwide implementation of the initiative.
The Mahama-led administration has described the NAP as a critical pillar in its drive to create jobs and equip Ghana’s youth with employable skills for sustainable livelihoods.
On Monday, President Mahama launched one of the party’s flagship programmes, “Adwumawura” aimed at creating estimated 10,000 jobs annually for the youth and other people seeking jobs.
The addition of the skills training to be launched on Wednesday gives credence to the President fulfilling some key party manifesto promises.

Four persons who were arrested over the cocaine bust at the Swiss port at the Kotoka International Airport have been remanded.
The four, Gariba Soli, an artefact dealer at the art centre, Josiah Baidoo, Emmanuel Mintah and Kwabena Ampfo Anti, all freight forwarders, were arrested for allegedly attempting to export 73 slabs of cocaine without a license.
The four have been charged with counts of attempting to export a narcotic substance without a license, conspiracy and possession of a narcotic substance without a license.
According to the facts of the case, officers of the Narcotic Control Commission, on a routine inspection at the Swiss port, encountered 3 wooden boxes marked to be carrying artefacts. However, a further check of the contents revealed that they contained 73 slabs of powdered substances, later tested to be Cocaine.
The first accused person, Gariba Soli, during interrogation, however, explained that he was contracted by one Patrick to export artefacts to the Netherlands.
He insists that the items in the boxes, as sent by him to the Swiss port on April 14 for exporting, were artefacts only to be called on April 23 for an inspection of the cargo, which turned out to be Cocaine.
NACOC intercepts 73 slabs of suspected cocaine at Swiss Port; 4 arrested
Four suspects connected to the recent cocaine bust at the Swissport Cargo Terminal, located within the Aviance Cargo Village at the Kotoka International Airport, have been remanded in prison custody.
They are scheduled to reappear in court on 6 May 2025.
The suspects face four charges: attempted exportation of narcotic drugs without a licence; conspiracy to commit a crime, namely exportation of narcotic drugs without a licence; conspiracy to commit a crime, namely possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority; and possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

According to the prosecution, the Narcotics Control Commission has not yet concluded its planned analytical examination of the suspected substances at the Ghana Standards Authority. As such, the prosecution requested that the suspects be remanded in prison custody.
One of the suspects, Gariba Soli, is reported to be an artefact dealer operating from the Art Exhibition Centre in Accra. The remaining suspects—Josiah Biney, Emmanuel Minta, and Kwabena Ampofo Anti—are freight forwarders and employees of Ansahdys Shipping and Logistics Co. Ltd, based at the Aviance Cargo Village, KIA.
The prosecution alleges that on Wednesday, 23rd April, authorised officers stationed at the Export Section of the Swissport Cargo Terminal intercepted three wooden boxes during a routine physical inspection of outbound cargo bound for Brussels.
The boxes, which raised suspicion, were reportedly destined for the Netherlands.
An initial inspection revealed that the boxes contained assorted wooden artefacts and no apparent contraband. However, when emptied and scanned, imaging revealed the presence of false compartments in each box.
Upon further examination, the compartments were dismantled, revealing a total of seventy-three (73) compressed slabs of suspected narcotic substances. When a sample slab was cut open, it exposed a whitish, powdery substance which, after field testing, returned a positive result for cocaine.

Former Bekwai MP Joseph Osei-Owusu has disclosed that the New Patriotic Party’s internal post-election report revealed a troubling trend — more than two million voters in the party’s strongholds chose not to participate in the last general election. According to him, their silence sent a message the party can no longer ignore.
“The report shows that a little over two million people around our strongholds did not go out to vote. They also told us a story,” he said on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News.
Osei-Owusu acknowledged that this disengagement reflected voter disappointment and served as a painful but necessary wake-up call.
“They made us look at what we did wrong… Things we said, things we overlooked, things we ought to have known, things we ought not to have done — but did,” he admitted.
He called on the party to move beyond a narrow focus on electoral victories and to connect meaningfully with its disillusioned base.
“It is appropriate that we go round to thank them. The thank-you tour is not only for those who have won,” he said, suggesting the party’s immediate focus should be on reconciliation and accountability rather than celebration.
Meanwhile, seasoned journalist Kwesi Pratt has raised concerns about the transparency surrounding the very report Osei-Owusu referred to.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Pratt questioned why access to the Mike Oquaye Committee’s final report has reportedly been limited — even to those who contributed to it.
“According to the party, it prepared only one copy of the report, not two, and that one copy of the report was presented to the National Council. It stands to reason that Mike Oquaye himself doesn’t have a copy of the report he wrote,” Pratt remarked.

Accra, April 30, GNA – Mrs. Antoinette Kwofie, Finance Officer of MTN Ghana, has called on women-led businesses in Ghana to embrace e-commerce and invest in digital skills for new growth opportunities and expand their market reach.
She said this at maiden edition of the African Women in Leadership Organisation (AWLO) Ghana Impact Dinner held on April 27, 2025, in Accra.
The event brought together female entrepreneurs, business leaders, and investors to explore strategies for business expansion, with a special focus on empowering women in leadership and enterprise development.
During a panel discussion, Mrs. Kwofie pointed out gaps in how women entrepreneurs use digital tools.
She noted that while 60 per cent of women-led businesses across Africa relied on social media platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram for marketing and sales, only about 25 per cent use dedicated e-commerce platforms.
“This limited use of e-commerce is a missed opportunity, fear of online fraud is real, but there are secure payment systems and trusted platforms available. Embedding secure payment links on websites and engaging global e-commerce platforms can significantly boost the visibility and scalability of women-led businesses,” Mrs. Kwofie said
She urged women entrepreneurs to take advantage of training opportunities in digital skills and financial literacy, adding that several institutions offer capacity-building support tailored to women in business.
“I challenge every woman-led SME to go a step further in understanding and using digital platforms. The potential to grow your customer base and scale your business is tremendous,” she added.
The AWLO Ghana Impact Dinner marked a significant milestone for the African Women in Leadership Organisation, which has been championing women’s leadership across the continent since its inception in 2009.

Renowned US-based Ghanaian lawyer and scholar, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, has called out the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) following the release of its official resolution demanding that President John Dramani Mahama revokes the suspension of Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.
In a statement shared on social media on April 29, 2025, Kwaku Asare refuted the assertion of the GBA that President John Dramani Mahama’s suspension of the Chief Justice was unconstitutional.
He asserted that the association’s claims that President Mahama erred in his decision to suspend Justice Torkornoo were unfounded because there is no laid down procedure for the president to carry out the powers given for the suspension.
He said that the suspension of Justice Torkornoo by President Mahama is constitutional, adding that the GBA’s statement is prejudicial.
“The GBA claims that the Chief Justice’s suspension is unconstitutional because no published regulation governs the President’s discretion under Article 296(c).
“The Chief Justice’s suspension remains constitutional. The GBA’s call for revocation lacks legal merit and risks politicising the judiciary itself,” he wrote.
He went on to list reasons the GBA’s call for revocation of the suspension is flawed, as follows:
1. Supreme Court already decided this:
In Ransford France vs Electoral Commission (2012), the Supreme Court unanimously held that not every discretionary act requires prior published regulations.
2. Literal reading rejected:
Justice Date-Bah warned that a literal interpretation of Article 296(c) would cause a “nuclear melt-down” of government—crippling normal administration.
3. Targeted scope of Article 296(c):
The Court ruled that Article 296(c) applies only to quasi-judicial situations, not to administrative acts like suspending an official pending investigation. By quasi-judicial, the Court clarified that it involves adjudication.
4. Living constitution approach:
Justice Atuguba emphasised that the constitution must be interpreted dynamically to promote governance, not obstruct it with technicalities.
5. Absence of regulations is not equal automatic unconstitutionality:
A missing regulation does not invalidate a discretionary act unless the act itself is arbitrary, biased, or violates due process (Articles 296(a) and (b)).
6. GBA offers no evidence of bias or unfairness:
The GBA merely points to the absence of regulations, without proving that the suspension was unfair, arbitrary, or prejudiced.
7. Ignoring precedent is dangerous:
The GBA’s position ignores the Ransford France precedent and risks spreading legal confusion rather than defending the rule of law.
8. Legal certainty matters:
If we follow the GBA’s logic, thousands of lawful discretionary acts since 1969 would collapse. That is not rule of law — it is chaos.
9. GOGO supports scrutiny — but it must be grounded in law:
Criticism of executive action must be rooted in binding precedent, not political expediency or selective readings of the Constitution.

Ghana’s local currency, the cedi, has recorded marginal gains against major trading currencies, particularly the US dollar, at some forex bureaus.
In its daily update, the Central Bank noted that the cedi is trading at a buying price of GH¢14.24 and a selling price of GH¢14.25 to a dollar.
The British pound is being bought at GH¢19.08 and sold at GH¢19.10, while the euro trades at a buying price of GH¢16.23 and a selling price of GH¢16.25.
Checks by GhanaWeb Business on April 30, 2025, at 08:00 AM indicate that the cedi is trading at GH¢15.30 to the dollar, while the pound is trading at GH¢20.30 at some major forex bureaus across the country.
Additionally, the euro is trading at GH¢17.40 on the retail market.

Former flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has indicated his readiness to contest the flagbearerhip again if nominations are opened.
He indicated that his team is resolute despite alleged intimidation from persons belonging to other camps who have shown interest in the race.
Mr Agyapong was speaking after announcing his withdrawal from the party’s ‘Thank You Tour’ following a stabbing incident in Kumasi involving one of his supporters.
“I am taking this opportunity to inform all that I am going to contest; nobody can stop me from doing that. They should be ready. We were part of those who built the party and sacrificed for it,” he said.
He added that, “we will also regroup ourselves, in the appropriate time we will do whatever we have to do for the party, and anything that will improve our chances.”
The young supporter is alleged to have been stabbed for resisting attempts by some thugs to retrieve a gift of cash received from a friend of Kennedy Agyapong.
The tough-talking politician has refused to respond to allegations and alleged assaults, but insists on fighting for justice for the student.
The stabbing incident has already been reported to the police, with three spent bullet shells as evidence for the discharge of firearms by heavily built men.
“In my normal style, I would have retaliated easily because we know the guy,” Mr Agyapong indicated, referencing the individual who led the assault.
According to the NPP stalwart, persons showing up at various venues of the party’s ‘Thank You Tour’ have often been threatened.
Others are alleged to have regularly published fake stories to tarnish his image and negatively impact his potential candidature.
“From Berekum to Kumasi, all that has happened tells me that we are not needed. Let them do their own thing,” said Kennedy.
According to him, his security team indicated their inability to guarantee the safety of his entourage and others who will troop to the various venues for his sake.
“My team and I will have to pull out after what happened yesterday. Lives are threatened; I don’t think I can protect my team enough,” he announced.
“I admit Dr Bawumia was the flagbearer, so if he is going round and for the sake of unity, he invites us and it turns out to be something different, I have to stay away, so they do.”

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has reached an agreement with nine large scale mining companies to buy 20% of their gold output locally for the country.
The landmark agreement was reached after series of negotiations between the management of GoldBod and representatives of mining companies who are not part of the Bank of Ghana Domestic Gold Purchase Program.
The companies are namely; Golden Team Mining Company Limited, Akroma Gold Limited, Adamus Resources Limited, Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, Goldstone Akrokeri Limited, Earl International Group (GH) Limited, Xtra Gold Mining Limited, Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited and Gan He Mining Resource Development Limited.
Under the Agreement, the mining companies will deliver 20% of any gold they seek to export out of the country to the GoldBod in the form of doré bars at a designated collection point, which shall be the Assay Laboratory of the GoldBod at the Kotoka International Airport.
All payments by the GoldBod to the companies shall be calculated based on the World Market (LBMA AM) spot price, less a 1% discount and shall be effected within two (2) working days of the delivery of gold to the GoldBod under the agreement.
The currency for all transactions under this agreement shall be Ghana cedis, while the rate of exchange shall be the Daily Interbank FX (Weighted Median) Rate published by the Bank of Ghana.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, thanked the companies and the Chamber of Mines for their cooperation and commitment to the vision of President Mahama aimed at optimizing national benefits from the gold resources of the country.
He indicated that the agreement forms part of the GoldBod’s bid to boost gold and foreign reserve accumulation by the Bank of Ghana in line with the vision of the President.
The GoldBod and all parties have agreed to sign a written Agreement to formalize this arrangement on the 15th of May, 2025, to pave way for the commencement of the program effective 1st June 2025.

THE 2024 flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said dumsor is back again with President John Mahama despite his promise to provide efficient power supply.
“Dumsor has started again immediately they came into office. By 2028, all Ghanaians will see their lies,” he said to party faithful yesterday during his ‘Thank You Tour’ of Bono Region.
There are so many promises they made to Ghanaians but are now retreating; they are not able to stop galamsey, they promised to pay 7,000 cedis to cocoa farmers but are now saying they did not get the right information, they also promised to cancel licensure exams but now only interested in terminating appointments of people employed since 2017, Dr. Bawumia stated.
He disclosed that, the ‘Thank You Tour’ is unifying since all former flagbearer primary contenders are with him, stressing it is necessary to thank all party faithful including patriots, council of elders, communicators, polling station executives and constituency executives who worked hard towards the 2024 elections.
Dr. Bawumia firmly rejected claims that his religious background contributed to the NPP’s loss in the 2024 general election. He said the party worked hard and introduced several good policies, adding that the NPP shall win again but this time they would prioritise employment.
“It is not about religion. Sunyani East and Wenchi were won by Muslims (MPs). I got more votes than Ntim Fordjour in the Assin North Constituency. If it were religion, there are 236 Christian constituencies where their parliamentary candidates would have gotten more votes, but in many of these constituencies I got more votes than the parliamentary candidates,” he stated.
The former Vice President attributed the loss to apathy within party members who failed to vote in their strongholds, pointing out that, according to research, about 2.1m NPP voters did not turn up, and Mahama won by 1.7m votes, saying, “So if all our people voted for us, we would have won. The NDC did not appreciate in votes. It is not that NDC won but our people did not vote.”

Ghana’s crude oil production has declined for the fifth year on a roll, dropping from a peak of 71.44 million barrels in 2019 to 48.25 million barrels in 2024.
This was contained in the 2024 Annual Report released by the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) in Accra yesterday.
The report highlights a marginal year-on-year decline of 0.01 percent and an average annual drop of 7.4 percent over the five-year period.
This decline raises concerns about the sustainability of the country’s upstream petroleum sector and the long-term economic implications.
The report also reveals that total proceeds from GNPC Explorco’s liftings in 2024 — amounting to US$145.68 million — were not paid into the Petroleum Holding Fund (PHF), as required by law.
This omission brings the cumulative total of unpaid revenues held by JOHL and subsequently GNPC Explorco to US$488.79 million as of the end of 2024.
GNPC maintains that revenues from Explorco liftings are not obligated to be paid into the PHF, a position PIAC has repeatedly challenged.
The oversight committee has called for clarity and legal adherence in the management of such revenues to ensure transparency and accountability in the sector.
Additionally, the report highlights persistent surface rental arrears, with international oil companies (IOCs) owing the government US$2.89 million in unpaid fees as of December 2024.
Notably, around 60 percent of these arrears are owed by three companies whose petroleum agreements were terminated in 2021, raising questions about enforcement and revenue recovery mechanisms.

The Ghana Gold Board has agreed with nine large-scale mining companies to retain 20 per cent of their gold output in the country.
The arrangement was announced in a Facebook post on April 30 2025, by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Mr Sammy Gyamfi. It follows negotiations with companies that are not part of the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
The nine companies, Golden Team Mining Company Limited, Akroma Gold Limited, Adamus Resources Limited, Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, Goldstone Akrokeri Limited, Earl International Group (GH) Limited, Xtra Gold Mining Limited, Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited and Gan He Mining Resource Development Limited, have agreed to sell a fifth of their export-bound gold to the Ghana Gold Board.
Beginning June 1, 2025, each company will be required to deliver the specified portion of gold in the form of doré bars to the Board’s Assay Laboratory at the Kotoka International Airport. Payment will be made in Ghana cedis, based on the daily interbank exchange rate published by the Bank of Ghana.
The GoldBod has said payments will be made within two working days of delivery, with the price pegged to the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA AM) spot rate, less a one per cent discount.
The agreement is expected to be formally signed on May 15, 2025.
Mr Gyamfi said the arrangement is part of government efforts to improve local gold retention, boost reserves, and reduce pressure on the cedi.
He acknowledged the role of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and the participating companies in reaching the deal, which supports the current administration’s economic direction under President John Dramani Mahama.
Kumawood actor and filmmaker, LilWin
Kumawood actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, has cautioned television networks across Ghana against airing his films without authorisation.
In a video shared on his social media platforms on April 29, 2025, the actor did not hide his frustration as he called out some TV station owners and executives for broadcasting both Ghanaian and Nigerian movies without proper licensing.
According to LilWin, while these broadcasters are willing to invest in foreign series, particularly telenovelas, they often neglect local content creators and resort to pirating African films from platforms like YouTube.
“I don’t understand how these stations can afford to pay for telenovelas yet choose to download Nigerian films for free and air them,” he said.
He made it clear that any illegal use of his productions, especially those uploaded on his YouTube channel, would be met with serious consequences.
LilWin revealed that he is ready to take legal action against offenders, and should legal procedures drag on, he hinted at alternative ways of handling the situation.
“The amount of money I’ll claim when I take legal action… And if the case delays, I’ll deal with it in a way you won’t see coming,” he warned.

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) is facing significant scrutiny and criticisms after submitting a list of demands to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to reverse the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo.
According to the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), the suspension of the Chief Justice by the president is deemed unconstitutional.
The GBA contends that President Mahama, not being a judicial officer, lacks the legal authority to unilaterally exercise discretion in suspending the Chief Justice, as no existing laws confer such power upon him.
“The Ghana Bar Association calls for the immediate revocation of the suspension of the Chief Justice, as it considers the suspension to be unconstitutional, considering the fact that the President, who is not a judge or judicial officer, exercised his discretion to suspend the Chief Justice under Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution in the absence of a published Constitutional Instrument, Statutory Instrument, or Regulation(s) governing the exercise of his said discretion as required by Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution,” part of the resolution reads.
The Ghana Bar Association’s resolution has sparked public criticisms, particularly from legal experts, who are questioning the basis and justification for the Association’s demands — especially in light of an earlier statement from the GBA, which emphasised the need for the rule of law to prevail in the ongoing developments surrounding the Chief Justice’s suspension.

Thaddeus Sory
Thaddeus Sory, a private legal practitioner, weighing in on the Ghana Bar Association’s demands, calling for the complete revocation and suspension of the association itself, describing its demands as “legally flawed and disrespectful.”
Sharing his views, the legal practitioner stated that the president’s suspension of the Chief Justice, carried out in consultation with the Council of State in accordance with Article 146, did not breach or violate any laws.
He further criticised the GBA for attempting to interpret the law as though it were their exclusive domain, urging them to seek redress in the courts if they believe they have a legitimate case against the president regarding the Chief Justice’s suspension.
“If the Bar believes it has a case, let it go to court. But history is not on their side. Past attempts have yielded embarrassing defeats. Even outside of constitutional litigation, our respected colleague Ward Brew has repeatedly prevailed in court against the Bar. The law is not the sole preserve of the Bar’s interpretation. The law is not in the bosom of the Bar!” parts of his statement read.
Franklin Cudjoe
The Founding President of IMANI Africa, in his criticism of the Ghana Bar association, did not mince words, describing the association’s leadership as politically-biased.
He questioned the association’s sudden statement on the Chief Justice’s suspension, expressing concern over their apparent silence on the infringement of the voting rights of constituents in the SALL area, suggesting a selective approach to advocacy.
“The GBA claims it is REASSERTING itself! They did nothing for SALL. Politically bias leadership!!”, he posted on Facebook on April 29, 2025.
Srem-Sai
The Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, has also criticised the Ghana Bar Association, accusing it of attempting to subvert the constitution through its demands for the prima facie case against the Chief Justice to be made public.
Speaking to TV3 on April 29, 2025, he said “If a group of lawyers meet at an event and decide that the best call they can make is that the president unmakes that which the constitution says should be private, be made public, what does that tell you? It tells you that it is a group who are trying to subvert the constitution.
“Do they need to go to law school to understand that when the constitution says something should be private, and a series of court decisions confirm that the process, including the petition, the conversation, and everything about it should be private?”
Prof Ransford Gyampo
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Ransford Gyampo, in a series of posts on Facebook, criticised the Ghana Bar Association, accusing them of raising their critical voices only when a particular political party or government is in power.
According to him, he questioned the seemingly hypocritical nature of the Ghana Bar Association, asserting that the association appeared to speak out only on certain issues, while remaining silent for a prolonged period prior to the inception of the current government.
“The sudden discovery of voice by the 43-Member GBA after their deafening 8-year silence is nauseating. Who formed this association? Was this hypocritical selective activism part of their enabling charter? Ghanaians must call them out!” he said.
He further mocked the Ghana Bar Association as being a legal body whose contentions contradict established laws, cautioning them to be mindful of their actions.
He warned that their behavior could lead to them becoming irrelevant in public opinion and erode the trust between the association and the public.
“A Ghana Bar Association that only speaks when one particular regime is in power; and a Ghana Bar Association whose position on a legal matter cannot be found in law, may soon be called a Ghana “Chop” Bar Association if it doesn’t repent,” he wrote.

The Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) has noted plans to boost the country’s tourism landscape through innovation and technology.
According to its Chief Executive, Professor Kobby Mensah, the company is moving beyond traditional infrastructure to embrace digital solutions that will transform service delivery, enhance competitiveness and ensure local businesses benefit more from the tourism value chain.
“We have constrained infrastructure to only physical structures for too long — but infrastructure is also about systems and support. Technology is the way forward,” he said at a press briefing held to launch the Ghana Hotels Association’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.
“I see innovation and technology as one of the things that we can use to support. If you talk about data collection, customer service, quality measures — how do we come in at GTDC to help you collect customer satisfaction data, for example, so that you could see where you are performing and how you can upgrade? ” he quizzed.
Professor Mensah said his outfit is focused on rolling out a strategic digital platform — the Ghana Tourism Marketplace — designed to connect local industry players directly with global audiences and reduce dependency on foreign Online Travel Agencies (OTAs).
According to him, international OTAs have long dominated Ghana’s tourism earnings, often holding back payments to local businesses for weeks.
“We have sat here and allowed OTAs abroad to take our money for far too long. It is not going to happen again, not when I am at GTDC,” he said.
He assured stakeholders that the Ghana Tourism Marketplace platform will be built and supported at no cost to operators.
“You are not going to pay a dime, no registration fee, no whatever fee. We are going to support it with amazing innovation and technology to make sure that when they type in ‘tourism in Africa, Ghana comes up immediately,” he said, emphasising the GTDC’s commitment to making the platform a globally competitive tool.
He also commended the contributions of young tech talents in Ghana and reaffirmed his belief in their potential to drive the digital transformation of the tourism sector.
He, therefore, called on industry stakeholders to embrace the new vision, stating: “We are building a very robust, strategically oriented tourism market and I can assure you of our full support. The GTDC team is made up of quite dynamic young people, and we will put all our support behind this industry to make it work,” he said.

Having flouted the regulations, the English FA will decide whether to remind the player about the rule and warn him or sanction him.
Some concerned football fans have questioned the regulation, as captains had been wearing rainbow armbands in previous rounds of Premier League matches as part of the Rainbow Laces campaign, which offers support to the LGBTQ+ community in football and beyond.

More than 100,000 people took to the streets of the capital, Nairobi, on 25 June 2024 calling on MPs
Leading human rights organisations have renewed calls for investigations into the killing of protesters by Kenya’s security forces during demonstrations against a rise in taxes last June.
It follows a BBC Africa Eye investigation, exposing members of the security forces who shot dead three protesters at Kenya’s parliament, igniting public outrage and demands for justice.
Amnesty International and the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) said the officers identified in the documentary should “face the law”.
Kenya’s government spokesman has responded by saying “every life is important”, the police watchdog is conducting an investigation and criticised the BBC documentary for being “one-sided”.
“Those who did the documentary should have sought government opinion… so that they can be fair and balanced,” Isaac Mwaura said.
“For example, they show the parliament being burnt, but they don’t show who is doing it; they seem to minimise the vandalisation that happened in parliament.”
He admitted the protesters had legitimate concerns about the finance bill but said: “We cannot have a country that also is led through anarchy and mayhem.”
The BBC had asked the government to take part in the documentary.
It was briefly discussed in Kenya’s parliament on Tuesday when MP John Kiarie accused the BBC of “pushing a foreign agenda”, while another MP, Millie Odhiambo, said the government and parliament should deal with the aftermath of the protests “soberly”, without gagging the media.
“The BBC documentary has created more anger among young people… You can’t stop the media,” Odhiambo said.
In response to the documentary before it was aired, the police service said the force could not investigate itself, adding that Kenya’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) was responsible for investigating alleged misconduct.
The Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) told the BBC the IPOA had not forwarded any request to look into any of its personnel involved in the operations at parliament.
BBC Africa Eye’s Blood Parliament documentary revealed how security forces brutally responded to youthful protesters who breached Kenya’s parliament on 25 June 2024, the day lawmakers voted to approve the proposed tax hikes.
The controversial finance bill was aimed at raising $2.7bn (£2bn) the government said it needed to cut its reliance on external borrowing – but had sparked widespread protests.
Using open-source data and user-generated content, the BBC’s analysis of more than 5,000 images identified uniformed security personnel – a policeman and solider – who opened fire killing three unarmed protesters at parliament.
The wider clampdown by the security forces on a series of protests against the finance bill left at least 65 people dead, resulted in the forcible disappearance of 89 others and the arrest of thousands, according to Amnesty International.
The Kenyan government put the death toll at 42.
On Monday, the BBC said it had cancelled a private screening of the documentary in Kenya’s capital Nairobi “due to pressure from the authorities”.
“We are very disappointed not to have been able to share the documentary and panel discussion as planned,” a BBC spokesperson said.
“In the meantime, audiences can watch the film on BBC Africa’s YouTube channel,” the spokesperson added.
Amnesty said the documentary corroborated the group’s earlier report that “unnecessary and excessive lethal force was used against protesters”.
It called on the police and the army to “publicly state the actions being taken with regard to the findings of the BBC exposé”.
The rights group urged Kenyans to sign a petition calling for a public inquiry into the killings during what were dubbed the #OccupyParliament protests.
The KHRC said the BBC documentary revealed how “organised criminals in police and military uniforms” were deployed “to murder innocent Kenyans”.
It said the “responsibility rests with [President William] Ruto, who must be held accountable for these deaths”.
Kenyans expressed their anger online, pressing the government to hold security officers accountable for the killings and injuries of peaceful protesters.
Ruto has previously defended police against accusations of brutality and recently warned Kenyans against commenting on military matters.
Police have also repeatedly denied involvement in the abductions and killings. No officers have been charged.
On Monday, following the release of the BBC Africa Eye documentary, the IPOA gave an update on the investigations.
The authority revealed that so far, of the 60 deaths under investigation, 41 involved gunshot wounds.
The IPOA said it had completed 22 investigations, while it was actively pursuing 36, and that two cases were currently before the courts.
The investigating agency said it had recorded 233 injury cases during the demonstrations.
In a statement, the main opposition coalition said the “execution of peaceful protesters was premeditated and sanctioned at the highest levels”.
Mr Mwaura said the documentary risked “inciting Kenyans to violence” while one legislator called for the BBC to be banned in Kenya.
George Peter Kaluma, said that the 37-minute-long documentary risked “destabilising” the country.
But a senator, Edwin Sifuna, defended the documentary saying there were no “fabrications” in it.
“We must encourage these stories to be told from all angles for the sake of truth and justice. Those who are uncomfortable with this are wrestling with their own consciences and we cannot help them with that,” Sifuna posted on X.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that in the last general election, it was only in the North East Region that the party’s votes increased.
He said, “The number of votes the party had in 15 out of the 16 regions of Ghana declined in the 2024 elections as compared to what the party had in those regions in the 2020 general election.
“It was only in the North East Region that the party was able to increase its votes, and that is my home region.”
Addressing NPP supporters in Takoradi as part of his nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’, Dr. Bawumia noted that the number of votes President John Mahama had in 2024, was not all that different from what he got in 2020.
Dr. Bawumia stated that in the Greater Accra Region for instance, 529,000 people declined to vote. “In the Ashanti Region they were 430,000; Eastern, 258,000; Central, 251,000; Western, 164,000 and Bono Region, 100,000,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia urged party members to unite as they set their sights on winning the 2028 general election, saying unity is the key to strengthening the party and regaining power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dr. Bawumia, who was joined by his former competitor in the NPP flagbearer race, Ken Agyapong, stressed that it was important for the party to unite, adding, “If we are united, we are going to win 2028.”
He explained that from the time of the late Prof. Adu Boahen to former President Akufo-Addo, all the party’s presidential candidates had gone ahead with a ‘Thank You Tour’ irrespective of the outcome of general elections.
“We are doing it differently this time because I want unity,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia assured the supporters that the party has taken important lessons from the last elections and was determined to make the necessary corrections.
He also expressed deep appreciation to the party’s polling station executives and grassroots supporters, describing them as the NPP’s greatest assets.

Renowned legal practitioner Thaddeus Sory has advised the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to seek legal redress if it believes the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama is unconstitutional.
His comments follow a statement by the GBA, through its Public Relations Officer, Saviour Kudze, expressing concern over the President’s use of discretionary power under Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution to suspend the Chief Justice.
The association argued that such discretion must be governed by legal instruments to ensure accountability and prevent abuse.
“Subject to exercise discretion under article 296, they ought to have been made regulations like a constitutional instrument before exercising such discretion because the essence is to govern, how it is exercised so that it doesn’t get abused,” Kudze explained.
In response, Thaddeus Sory, in a legal opinion shared on Facebook titled Revoke and Suspend the Bar, urged the GBA to stop public commentary and instead pursue legal action.
“There is no need for threats or rhetorical outrage. If the Bar believes it has a case, let it go to court,” he stated.
He also questioned the effectiveness of the GBA’s past legal efforts, saying: “But history is not on their side. Past attempts have yielded embarrassing defeats. REVOKE AND SUSPEND THE BAR
1. This will be brief and direct. Perhaps it’s no surprise that it took two clear days for the Ghana Bar Association’s resolution to finally see the light of day.
2. It was only this afternoon, 29th April 2025, that a signed copy of the Bar’s resolution—passed on Saturday, 26th April—surfaced publicly.
3. Among other things, the Ghana Bar Association (the Bar) resolved that:
i. The Acting Chief Justice should withdraw his directive “on the assignment of cases”; and
ii. The President should revoke the “suspension of the Chief Justice.”
4. According to the Bar, the Acting Chief Justice’s directive is “uncertain,” and the President’s suspension of the Chief Justice is “unconstitutional.” Their reasoning is that the President, who is neither a judge nor a judicial officer, exercised discretion “in the absence of a published Constitutional Instrument, Statutory Instrument or Regulation(s)” as required under Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution.
5. These demands are not only legally flawed and disrespectful, but they also expose a troubling inconsistency in the Bar’s reasoning. Just days ago, the Bar issued a statement that now seems at odds with its own resolution.
6. By law and longstanding practice, the power to assign cases is an administrative function of the Chief Justice. This function pertains to the office of the Chief Justice—not the individual currently holding the title.
7. Therefore, anyone constitutionally recognized as the Chief Justice, including one serving in an acting capacity, is empowered by law and practice to assign cases. The suspended Chief Justice exercised that function while in office. Now, the Acting Chief Justice must do the same.
8. The Bar’s position implies that the powers of the office are personal to the suspended Chief Justice. But when she was in office, the Bar raised no objections as she reassigned judges and altered case allocations. Did they then suggest she rely on an algorithm or random generator to assign cases? Were her removals and replacements of judges questioned?
9. Where was the Bar when the suspended Chief Justice issued unconstitutional and unlawful administrative guidelines and practice directions—actions that not only violated legal norms but also resulted in financial loss to the Republic through ill-conceived launches?
10. And if the Bar claims ignorance, I wrote publicly on those very matters.
11. Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution clearly states: “… the President may, acting in accordance with the advice of the Council of State, suspend the Chief Justice.”
12. This means that unless there is advice from the Council of State, the President cannot suspend the Chief Justice. The word “may” here does not grant discretion to act unilaterally. Once advised by the Council of State, the President is constitutionally bound to act- he must suspend.
13. There is no need for threats or rhetorical outrage. If the Bar believes it has a case, let it go to court. But history is not on their side. Past attempts have yielded embarrassing defeats. Fitch Solutions has maintained its forecast of 4.2% Gross Domestic Product growth for Ghana in 2025.

According to the UK-based firm, record-high gold prices will largely insulate the Ghanaian economy from a tariff-induced global slowdown, as it will improve fiscal intakes, boost export earnings, and maintain exchange rate stability.
It pointed out that Ghana remains relatively shielded from the adverse effects of rising trade protectionism in the US, as its two main export commodities—gold and oil—are exempted from President Trump’s tariffs.
Furthermore, the US makes up only 4.0–5.0% of Ghana’s total exports, with mainland China and Europe—particularly Switzerland and the Netherlands—serving as more significant trading partners.
“While we note that Ghana is exposed to the broader effects of a global economic slowdown stemming from US-China trade tensions, we believe the impact will be offset by the rise in global gold prices, which will boost Ghana’s export earnings, bolster its international reserves, and allow the central bank to keep the currency stable”, it added.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the actor criticised the frequent power outages — locally known as dumsor — especially in parts of Accra, stating that the situation continues to disrupt businesses and daily life for many Ghanaians.
“How can a country achieve a 24-hour economy when basic utilities like electricity can’t even be provided for 10 hours? It seems like a distant dream. #stopdumsornow,” he wrote on April 29, 2025.
His comment comes amid fresh public pressure on the government to address the erratic power supply that has plagued the country for years.
While many users agreed with his sentiments, others called out the actor’s perceived inconsistency. Critics recalled his vocal stance during the #DumsorMustStop protests under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, contrasting it with what they describe as his relative silence during the current New Patriotic Party (NPP)-led government’s handling of the issue.

Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai, has accused the Ghana Bar Association of attempting to circumvent the constitution.
The Ghana Bar Association at its 2025 Mid-Year conference in Accra issued a communiqué and demanded that President John Dramani Mahama revoke the suspension of the Chief Justice due to its unconstitutionality, under Article 146 (10)
Saviour Kudze, the PRO of the association in a further interview in Eyewitness News on April 29 stated that their demand is to ensure that the exercising of discretionary powers in such cases is not abused.
“There ought to have been regulations in the nature of a constitutional instrument or executive instrument before exercising such discretion because the essence is to govern how it is exercised so that it doesn’t get abused. So, we are saying that in the absence of such regulation, we are of the view that the president has not done well,” he stated.
But Speaking on TV3, on Tuesday, April 29, Justice Srem-Sai stated that calls by the GBA are untenable.
“If a group of lawyers meet at an event and decide that the best call they can make is that the president unmakes that which the constitution says should be private, be made public, what does that tell you? It tells you that it is a group who are trying to subvert the constitution.
“Do they need to go to law school to understand that when the constitution says something should be private, and a series of court decisions confirm that the process, including the petition, the conversation, and everything about it should be private?” he questioned.
Meanwhile, the Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress, Edudzi Tamakloe, insists that the President acted within the law and did not err in suspending the Chief Justice.
“A prima facie determination is derived from the validity of the petition, and that duty, the terms of the constitution prevail on the chief justice, has been performed. There is nothing in the constitution that prevents the Council of State from performing that constitutionally imposed duty once the president has referred the petition to them. Any attempt to stop that process will be subverting the constitution,” he said.
