2025 TGMAs: There’s no motivation to look your best on the red carpet

Ghanaian fashion stylist and influencer, Charlie Dior Ghanaian fashion stylist and influencer, Charlie Dior

Ghanaian fashion stylist and influencer, Charlie Dior, has called on the organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) to introduce incentives that would encourage celebrities to invest more in their red carpet appearances.

In a reaction to the often underwhelming fashion seen at major Ghanaian award shows, especially the TGMAs, Dior, in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s Joseph Henry Mensah, pointed out that the lack of motivation is a key reason why many local celebrities don’t go all out with their style.

“There is no motivation for personalities to invest in their looks. If you want people to invest in their looks, is there a reward for that? Are you going to be giving out a prize or something?” he asked.

Charlie Dior compared the situation in Ghana to global red carpet culture, referencing how international stars like Rihanna gained widespread media coverage and brand opportunities through bold fashion choices.

“There was a time Rihanna showed up at a red carpet in an outfit and it was all over the place. She ended up featuring on Vogue Magazine and other platforms. These are some of the things that motivate people to invest in their looks,” he said.

He noted that in Ghana, there is little to no such reward system, making it difficult to expect stars to go the extra mile, especially with the current economic challenges.

“But in Ghana, there is no motivation from anywhere. So if a celebrity invests in his/her looks, it would all be for what? And with this economy, they are not going to do that.”

To address the issue, Charlie Dior suggested that the TGMA organisers introduce incentives for best-dressed celebrities.

According to him, prizes, brand deals, or even a prestigious title could help change the face of red carpet fashion in Ghana.

“If they announce that the best-dressed celebrities would get certain goodies, we would see a great improvement on the red carpet.

“So we need more push from the organisers, be it money, deals or even just the title of being the best dressed,” he said.

AG files charges against Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi, Asamoah over Accra Sky Train project

Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Ekumfi is former GIIF Board Chair Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Ekumfi is former GIIF Board Chair

The Office of the Attorney General has filed charges against former Minister of Education, Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, and one Solomon Asamoah over their involvements in the Accra Sky Train project.

The filing of the charges comes after the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, indicated that both Asamoah and Prof Ameyaw-Ekumfi will face charges, with some board members offering to testify as prosecution witnesses.

He stated that it has been established that the $2 million payment made by the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund was unauthorised, with only former CEO Solomon Asamoah and former Board Chairman, Professor Ameyaw-Ekumfi, aware of and involved in the transaction.

“In respect of the Skytrain matter, we have completed investigations and will be filing charges hopefully next week. We have established that the two million United States dollars (US$2,000,000.00) paid by the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund was paid without board approval.

“The only persons who knew and acted on the payment were the former CEO, Mr Solomon Asamoah, and the former Board Chairman, Professor Ameyaw-Ekumfi. Both will be charged next week. Some of the board members have offered to testify as witnesses for the prosecution and I am considering their offers,” the AG said while briefing the media at a recent press briefing.

A portion of the charge sheet sighted by GhanaWeb showed that at least two charges had been slapped on the two men, including “Conspiracy to commit a crime” and “Wilfully causing financial loss to the Republic.”

Recent cedi stability a likely passing wind – Kade MP warns

0

Member of Parliament for Kade Constituency, Alexander Agyare Member of Parliament for Kade Constituency, Alexander Agyare

The Member of Parliament for Kade Constituency and Vice Chairman of the Budget Committee of Parliament, Alexander Agyare, has questioned the sustainability of the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar.

Speaking in an interview on Asaasepa, the MP noted that while the ruling National Democratic Congress has been quick to take credit for the cedi’s appreciation, the current state of the US dollar is a fact that cannot be ignored.

“If you ask me, the appreciation of the cedi is what you would call a passing wind. In economics, you don’t gain out of nothing. What have we done for the cedi to appreciate? Globally, the American dollar is facing challenges, which has led to a depreciation of the dollar in value,” he stated.

Among other factors, members of the ruling party and the government have ascribed the cedi’s appreciation to fiscal decisions and economic policies, such as the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board.

However, according to Alexander Agyare, the operations of the Gold Board are posed with inherent challenges that may prove fatal in the long run.

“We hear that the Gold Board has exported over $2 billion, which has been injected back into the economy. If that, along with the challenges facing the dollar, is what they want to take credit for, we will congratulate them. The arrangement for the Gold Board is that they will purchase the gold with cedis. Recently, when I went back to my constituency, the miners were very angry, and the aggregators are angry,” he said.

“Their issue is that while gold prices keep appreciating on the world market, the amount being paid to them has remained constant. Don’t forget that the people complaining today used to buy the gold using the international rate. So, it’s not as if they are not in tune with the work; they know their job. But it has happened that everyone has to comply with the Gold Board laws. However, when the prices go up on the international market, they do not benefit. That is something affecting the miners, for which the repercussions will soon manifest,” he stated.

He warned that if the right measures are not adopted, miners will eventually devise means of bypassing the Gold Board and smuggling gold out of the country to sell on the international market.

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), established on April 2, 2025, is a government body tasked with overseeing and regulating Ghana’s gold industry.

It holds exclusive rights to buy, sell, assay, and export gold, particularly from artisanal and small-scale miners, aiming to curb smuggling, boost state revenues, and stabilize the cedi.

The world is watching Mahama – NPP demands action over dollar gift saga

0

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has challenged President John Mahama to uphold the values he championed only a week ago with the launch of his administration’s code of conduct, in the wake of the Sammy Gyamfi dollar-sharing incident.

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, May 13, Boakye said President Mahama faces a critical test of leadership and integrity following recent controversial actions by the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Goldbod, Sammy Gyamfi, and the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine.

Boakye criticised the Attorney-General for threatening to “play in the mud” with a Member of Parliament who had accused him of corruption, instead of addressing the specific allegations.

“The President is being put to the test on his commitment to the very values he sought to espouse exactly a week ago when he outdoored the code of conduct,” Boakye stated.

“The entire world is waiting with bated breath on further actions by President Mahama, considering the actions of Mr Sammy Gyamfi and the Attorney-General,” he added.

The NPP official further demanded immediate and firm action from the President, urging him not to reward what he described as irresponsible behaviour.

“We want to see some action from President Mahama. We call on the President to show leadership — to act swiftly, decisively, and not to give Mr Gyamfi and the Attorney-General a pat on their backs for this reckless conduct,” Boakye said.

Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has praised Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his support throughout her career in public service.

In a post shared on her X page on Tuesday, May 18, 2025, she wrote:

“Honoured to welcome former President of Ghana, @NAkufoAddo, to Marlborough House. I thank you for your unflinching support from my time as Ghana’s Foreign Minister to now as Commonwealth Secretary-General.”

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs has already begun her tenure as the 7th Secretary-General of the 56-nation Commonwealth, becoming the first Ghanaian to hold the prestigious position.

She succeeded Baroness Patricia Scotland after being elected by consensus at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, in 2024.

In her maiden address delivered at the Commonwealth Secretariat’s headquarters in London, she underscored the critical role the Commonwealth must play in addressing global economic and political challenges.

“The world we live in today is unlike any we have seen before,” she stated, pointing to the consequences of economic downturns, rising defence spending, and weakened multilateralism on employment, poverty, and social protection systems.

She reaffirmed that the Commonwealth’s core values — democracy, good governance, peace, human rights, and equal opportunity remain vital in tackling these shared challenges.

Outlining her strategic priorities, she stated she would focus on three key areas: empowering women and young people with essential skills and opportunities, revitalising trade and investment for inclusive growth, and strengthening climate action, particularly to support vulnerable member states.

The visit is the first Nana Akufo-Addo has made to the Commonwealth Headquarters since Ayorkor Botchwey took over the helm of the organisation.

CDM Slams Mahama Over ‘Betrayal Of Trust’

0

President John Mahama

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has sharply criticised President John Dramani Mahama and his administration for what it describes as a betrayal of trust, following the government’s failure to abolish the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy.

The group, in a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday, said Mahama’s U-turn on the levy, despite promising its removal during the 2024 election campaign, undermines public confidence in his leadership.

According to the CDM, the President had repeatedly labelled the tax as “needless” and pledged to eliminate it to ease the economic burden on ordinary Ghanaians.

This promise, the group noted, was a central theme of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s campaign and was embraced by many citizens suffering under inflation and economic hardship. The decision to maintain the levy, now attributed to International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditionalities, has left many disillusioned.

The CDM argues that political leadership must be anchored in integrity and consistency, warning that Mahama’s reversal signifies a dangerous precedent of prioritising expediency over principle.

The group cited Article 36(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which obliges the state to ensure the right to decent living standards, suggesting that the continued levy contravenes both national and international obligations.

Calling for immediate action, the CDM demanded a clear roadmap for abolishing the tax, a formal apology from the President, and a legislative reaffirmation of ethical governance.

“To continue collecting this levy while citing IMF conditions is not only contradictory but demeaning,” the group said, urging the Mahama administration to restore public trust through moral leadership.

In theory the Cedi wins; In practice, Ghanaians wait

0

By George Kwami Agboklu

Accra, May 13, GNA – Ghana’s currency, the cedi, has been on a notable appreciation streak against the United States dollar, sparking debate about its implications for price reductions and economic relief.

From GH¢15.5050 per dollar on April 16, 2025, the cedi strengthened to GH¢12.8900 by May 12—a gain of 16.86 per cent and a remarkable Year to Date (YTD) gain of 12.31 per cent.

The cedi’s rapid appreciation in the first half of this year stands in stark contrast to its 2024 performance, where it depreciated by 19.2 per cent against the dollar in the interbank market, according to the Bank of Ghana Monetary Policy Report for January 2025,

The rate of inflation, another important macroeconomic metric closely interconnected with the currency exchange rate, continues to fall—from 23.5 per cent in January 2025 to 21.2 percent in April.

The currency’s appreciation streak comes after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumption of political power and management of the economy, following the party’s win in the December 2024 general election. The foreign exchange rate—the performance of the cedi against major trading currencies and the impact on cost of living—was a major campaign issue.

As expected, President John Dramani Mahama noted the cedi’s growing strength—albeit cautiously—during a nationally broadcast address on May 7, 2025, to give account of the Social Contract for his first 120 days in office, which he professed during the election campaign.

“The currency is becoming fairly stable, inflation is inching downward…” he read tersely.

According to standard macroeconomic theory, a sustained currency appreciation should reduce the cost of imports, ease imported inflation and enhance consumer purchasing power.

It should also lower external debt servicing costs, boost investor confidence, and, conversely, reduce the cedi value of remittances and export earnings.

On paper, this is good news. A stronger cedi results in lower import prices and helps slow inflation, which could, in theory, compensate for the income loss caused by weaker remittance and export earnings. However, in practice, the mitigating effect of lower inflation is limited and often delayed. This has been the case with the cedi’s recent appreciation.

Despite the cedi’s gains, consumer prices remain high, and the benefits of currency strength appear slow to filter through. Indeed, the lived reality for many Ghanaians tells the story of disconnect between currency gains and real-world relief and, in many instances, drawing their consternation.

The disparity arises from several factors, as noted in mainstream economic literature on currency appreciation and depreciation and their impacts or benefits for citizens.

Inflation benefits are broad, but income losses are immediate

According to the macroeconomic playbook, while falling inflation benefits the broader economy—everyone pays a bit less for fuel, food, pharmaceuticals and other essentials—the pain from income losses due to remittance and export devaluation is felt directly by specific households and businesses.

For instance, an exporter of agricultural produce or remittance-reliant family can lose about 10–11 per cent of their income virtually overnight, whereas the overall cost of living might only dip by 2–4 per cent over the same period.

Exchange rate gains don’t immediately lower prices

The pass-through from exchange rate gains to consumer prices is neither complete nor immediate. Importers often delay price reductions due to pre-existing contracts, high inventory costs, or pricing rigidity. Local producers may keep prices high to recover from earlier inflationary shocks or to protect profit margins. As a result, consumers may not see immediate or proportional price relief—even as the cedi gains strength.

Inflation eases costs, not incomes

A decline in inflation slows the pace of rising costs but does not boost incomes. A household receiving fewer cedis per dollar of remittance now has less to spend; they experience immediate reduction in the amount they receive in cedis—even if food prices fall slightly.

Exporters earning fewer cedis for their goods may delay investment, cut costs, or reduce wages long before they enjoy any benefit from cheaper imports.

Sectorial disparities persist

Many essential services—such as rent, school fees, and transportation—are classified as non-tradables and are largely insulated from currency movements. These prices tend to be sticky and slow to adjust, further compounding the impact of falling incomes from foreign-exchange-sensitive sectors like agriculture and remittances.

Structural constraints in Ghana’s economy

Ghana’s economy is heavily import-dependent, but key income flows—exports and remittances—are critical lifelines, not just balance sheet items. While a stronger cedi may ease inflation at the macro level, it does little to replace the cash that households rely on for food, education, and housing.

In short, the timing, distribution, and magnitude of the benefits from cedi appreciation do not match the immediacy and concentration of the losses. For many Ghanaians, the theory may hold—but the lived experience does not.

Government response and market outlook

Despite these concerns, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister of Finance assured stakeholders—during a recent meeting with the leadership of the Food and Beverage Association of Ghana (FABAG)—that the cedi’s appreciation was not a “temporary phenomenon but the result of deliberate, strategic economic management.”

Indeed, the currency’s strength appears to have boosted investor sentiment. On May 9, global credit rating agency S&P Global Ratings upgraded Ghana’s foreign-currency sovereign credit rating from Selective Default (SD) to CCC+, citing improved economic prospects and renewed confidence.

“The upgrade by S&P is a strong signal to the international investor community and development partners that Ghana is turning a crucial corner,” the Ministry of Finance noted in a Facebook post.

Again, the Ministry is bullish on the economy as it disclosed that S&P also projected Ghana’s public debt, net of liquid assets, would decline from 71.4 per cent of GDP at the end of 2024 to 47.4 per cent by 2028.

Is the cedi’s appreciation sustainable?

In spite of the notable performance, questions remain about the sustainability of the cedi’s recent gains. Some analysts suggest the rally has been driven by a combination of central bank interventions, disbursements from the IMF, and initiatives like the new Ghana Gold Board. Others attribute it to a weakening of the US currency, following their new tariff issues with China and Europe. Whether the gains are durable—or merely short-term props—remains to be seen.

While a stronger cedi may signal economic improvement, its true impact depends on how long and deeper the appreciation lasts, the extent to which it is supported by sound market fundamentals rather than artificial interventions, and how quickly and fairly the benefits are passed on to ordinary Ghanaians, who, in the meantime, await what difference it will make.

Turn forex bureaus into chop bars if it’s a crime to possess dollars – Basintale defends Sammy Gyamfi

0

Chief Executive Officer of Youth Employment Agency, Malik Basintale Chief Executive Officer of Youth Employment Agency, Malik Basintale

The Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency, Malik Basintale, has jumped to the defense of the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, following public backlash over his recent gifting of cash in dollar denominations to controversial former fetish priestess, Nana Agradaa.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Basintale, who also deputises Sammy Gyamfi in his dual role as the National Communications Officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), reacted to the attempted criminalisation of the possession of dollars by the critics of his boss.

According to him, the existence of forex exchange businesses in the country would be unnecessary if such assertions about the possession of dollars were true.

“The reason why it is not a crime to possess dollars in this country is because we even have forex bureaus, and the forex bureaus that are registered under the laws of this country permit you to buy and sell dollars. So, if it is a crime, then the forex bureaus should be turned into chop bars because it means that, simply, they are not fit to establish the fact that you go in and buy dollars,” he stated.

Among other things, he added that the reported invitation of the Gold Board CEO by the Chief of Staff in relation to the incident does not pronounce guilt on Sammy Gyamfi in any form.

“This is even the Chief of Staff; the Supreme Court can even invite you, but if you go to the Supreme Court, it doesn’t simply mean you are guilty,” he stated.

A viral video showing Sammy Gyamfi handing US dollar notes to Evangelist Patricia Oduro, known as Nana Agradaa, sparked public outrage and political backlash.

Critics, including the Minority in Parliament, have condemned the act as a breach of conduct, citing violations of Ghana’s Currency Act and Code of Conduct for public officials, and demanded his suspension and an investigation into the source of the funds.

Meanwhile, Sammy Gyamfi has apologised for the incident, describing the gesture as a private act of kindness.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi charged over alleged $2m Sky Train payment

0

The former Board Chair of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, has been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime—specifically, wilfully causing financial loss to the Republic.

The charges, brought under Section 23(1) and Section 179A(3)(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), stem from a $2 million payment made in 2019 to Africa Investor Holdings Limited for the development of an urban Sky Train system in Accra—a project that was never executed.

Court documents reveal that the funds were disbursed in February 2019 without the requisite board approval for either the share acquisition or the payment itself.

The money, which belonged to the GIIF, is considered a public asset, and its unauthorized release has triggered criminal proceedings.

Investigators say the decision to disburse the $2 million violated proper procedure. Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi, named as the second accused in the case, is said to have informed investigators in his caution statement that he approved the transfer based on a recommendation by the first accused, Solomon Asamoah, then Chief Executive of the GIIF.

However, neither of the two accused has been able to account for the missing funds.

Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi was recently arrested in connection with the failed Sky Train contract.

The Sky Train project was envisioned as an elevated light rail transport system aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Accra and other major cities.

It was to be implemented through a partnership between the Government of Ghana and South Africa-based Africa Investment (PTY) Limited, which was expected to provide financing, technology, and infrastructure support.

The project, however, never materialised, despite the significant upfront payment made by the Ghanaian government.

It’s not good optics if anyone can just stop and hang out with you

Kwaku Sintim-Misa, aka KSM, is a renowned Ghanaian comedian and social commentator Kwaku Sintim-Misa, aka KSM, is a renowned Ghanaian comedian and social commentator

Renowned Ghanaian comedian and social commentator Kwaku Sintim-Misa, popularly known as KSM, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the CEO of Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, over a viral video of him gifting money to evangelist Patricia Asiedu, popularly known as Agradaa.

In a reaction on his YouTube channel, KSM acknowledged that while the act itself may not have been wrong, the public perception was damaging.

“To Sammy Gyamfi and others who say that there was nothing wrong with what he did, maybe you’re right. But the optics are not good,” he said.

He emphasized that public figures, especially those in leadership positions, must be mindful of how their actions appear in the public eye.

He gave a scenario of an act of generosity toward a vulnerable person at a hospital, stating that such a gesture would have drawn no criticism.

“If, for example, you were driving around Korle Bu or any health centre and then you saw some old man going to the hospital but they said he couldn’t afford it, and you stopped your car, took out the money and gave it to him. Nobody would have said anything.

“But the optics of Sammy Gyamfi dashing a woman called Agradaa, who has been seen notoriously on record bashing the NDC. Its not good,” KSM stressed.

He further cautioned that such informal interactions, particularly with controversial figures like Agradaa, could erode public confidence in leadership.

“If anyone can see you outside and they can stop you and hang out with you. That’s not good optics. Forget about the fact that it was Agradaa.

“You can still be a people person. You can still respect people. But at the very worst, tell the person to call your PA and then come to the office. That shows you have a certain level of responsibility and focus,” he advised.

KSM praised Gyamfi’s intelligence but questioned whether he fully understood the concept of leadership.

“He’s a very, very intelligent person. But all of that does not mean that you understand the ingredients that make leadership work. Show her class. It’s not arrogance,” he said.

He urged the GoldBod CEO and other young political leaders to recognise the need for class and discipline, especially in their new positions.

“It’s not arrogance. That’s the level that you are. Please don’t take leadership for granted and say, ‘Oh, me, I am a man of the people.’ But levels must be maintained,” he said.

Details of UK’s new draconian immigration policies that will affect Ghanaians

0

The British government has outlined a number of immigration policies which are aimed at restricting access to the country.

These new immigration policies, which in the words of the UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, are aimed at “ending Britain’s open borders experiment,” will stop the influx of “lower paid workers” from other countries, including Ghanaians, from entering the European country.

Prime Minister Starmer, in a post shared on X on May 13, 2025, said that the move will help in “fixing” the British immigration system and “restoring” control of the borders of the country.

These radical immigration reforms, which have been shared on the UK government website and by the Prime Minister on his X handle, include an increase in the skill required to travel to the UK and a ban on the issuance of social care visas.

The UK government has explained that “new requirements on employers to boost domestic training will end the reliance on international recruitment, restoring order to a failed system that saw net migration quadruple between 2019 and 2023.”

Below are details of the restrictive immigration policies Ghanaians living in the UK or planning to travel to the European country should know about:

1. Only Ghanaian graduates can travel to the UK:

One of the new regulations includes the “Lifting the level for skilled workers back to RQF 6 (Graduate level) and above.”

This requirement implies that Ghanaians who intend to travel to the UK must be at least university graduates.

The UK Prime Minister explained that this move will ensure that only people with the requisite skill can enter his country to help grow the economy.

“Our current system is not selective enough about who comes to the UK. We’re raising the skills threshold to degree-level to make sure we attract people who can grow our economy,” he wrote.

2. Any Ghanaian travelling to the UK must have a basic understanding of the English Language:

The UK government is also setting an English language requirement for all persons who want to travel to their country.

Under the new requirement, Ghanaians and other nationals who want to travel to the UK must have a basic understanding of English.

“We’re raising English language requirements across every main immigration route, ensuring those wishing to live and work here speak English.

“And for the first time, adult dependents on those routes will also be required to have a basic understanding of English,” the UK Prime Minister wrote on X.

3. Increase the time needed to gain British citizenship:

The new immigration policy also includes doubling the length of time needed for a foreign national to become a UK citizen from 5 to 10 years.

Keir Starmer said that the increase in the time for one to gain UK citizenship will be reduced for people who contribute to the growth of his country’s economy.

“We’re introducing a new contributions-based model to settlement and citizenship. Extending the length of time a person needs to live in the UK from five to 10 years, with reductions for those who contribute to the economy. Settlement in the UK is a privilege, not a right,” he said.

4. Ghanaians barred from UK social care visas:

The UK government will also be barring the recruitment of social care personnel from foreign countries.

This means that the opportunity for Ghanaians to work as social caregivers in the UK has been closed.

The government wrote on its website, “End overseas recruitment for social care visas. In line with our wider reforms to skills thresholds, we will close social care visas to new applications from abroad.”

It added, “For a transition period until 2028, while the workforce strategy is being developed and rolled out, we will permit visa extensions and in-country switching for those already here. This will be kept under review.”

The UK Prime Minister has also explained that although caregivers have contributed greatly to the UK economy, his country wants to reduce its dependency on them.

“We’re permanently shutting down the care visa route. Care workers from overseas have made a huge contribution, but too many have been subject to abuse and exploitation. We’re moving away from our dependence on overseas workers to restore control and fairness to the system,” he wrote on X.

Student visa restriction:

Ghanaians who wish to study in the UK will also be affected by the new restrictions.

The new immigration policies will reduce the period foreign graduates can stay in the UK to 18 months.

“We will introduce new interventions for sponsors who are close to failing their sponsor duties, including placing them on an action plan designed to improve their compliance, and imposing limits on the number of new international students they can recruit while they are subject to those plans.

“We will reduce the ability for graduates to remain in the UK after their studies to a period of 18 months,” the UK government said.

what insiders say about the northern Burkina Faso jihadi massacre

0

More than 100 people, mostly soldiers, were reportedly killed in a coordinated jihadist assault More than 100 people, mostly soldiers, were reportedly killed in a coordinated jihadist assault

More than 100 people, mostly soldiers, were reportedly killed in a coordinated jihadist assault in northern Burkina Faso, according to accounts from insiders familiar with the situation.

The deadly operation targeted multiple sites, including a military installation and the long-besieged town of Djibo, early on Sunday.

“JNIM fighters attacked eight localities simultaneously to disperse the Burkina Faso air force. The main attack occurred in Djibo, where JNIM fighters first took control of all the town’s entry checkpoints before attacking the military camps, particularly the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit’s camp,” said an aid worker involved in community outreach, speaking under anonymity due to security concerns.

A local student, who also asked not to be named, said her father was among the dead. Both individuals spoke to The Associated Press.

The group behind the violence, Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which pledges allegiance to al-Qaida, later claimed responsibility. The insurgent alliance operates widely across the Sahel region, where Burkina Faso has become a flashpoint for extremist activity.

Charlie Werb, an independent Sahel analyst, examined video evidence from the scene and noted a troubling absence of military air support during the siege—unlike past attacks on Djibo where defense forces pushed back. He said the militants remained in the area for hours unchallenged.

Wassim Nasr, a senior fellow at the Soufan Center, called the assault a bold demonstration of JNIM’s increasing strength. “The fact that Djibo was targeted confirms the extent of JNIM’s freedom of movement within Burkina Faso.”

Once considered a government stronghold, Djibo now symbolizes the deteriorating security under the junta that seized power after two coups in 2022. With half the country effectively outside state control and both armed groups and state forces accused of abuses, the situation has grown increasingly volatile.

Observers warn the junta’s reliance on hastily assembled civilian militias has deepened ethnic divisions and further destabilized the region.

My Parents Got Married Six Months After They Met. 40 Years Later, My Wife and I Got Engaged After Six Months Too (Exclusive)

Forty years ago, my parents met at an intramural softball game and got married six months later. I’ve heard several iterations of this story from all the various persons involved — my father’s uncle, who sold my mother a car a few months prior, and his cousin, who was friends with my mother in college, both claimed credit for their match — but the core details of their first meeting remain the same. They met and then they knew. I owe my weakness for love stories to their meet-cute. I watch sitcoms and procedurals clocking the subtle shifts in character dynamics, waiting for the moment the two leads will turn to each other and realize “it’s you, it’s been you all along.” Even though I know, more or less, how each will end, I’m never not moved.

But in my own life,  I’ve always had trouble figuring out whether or not I believed love was a fact of life or the useful fiction that urges it forward and — before meeting my future wife, moving into her apartment, and proposing after only six months of dating — I relegated stories like my parents’ to romantic comedies, fairytales and bygone eras.

When my parents met, my mother was fresh out of college and had just started teaching elementary school. My father, who’d graduated a few years earlier with a business degree, was living in a mobile home next to his parents’ house, bouncing from one job to the next — pouring concrete here, driving a delivery truck there — while helping out on his father’s farm. Although they’d lived in adjacent small towns mere miles from one another all their lives and knew several people in common (my father played softball in the same small intramural league as my mother’s mother) their paths had never crossed.

The PEOPLE App is now available in the Apple App Store! Download it now for the most binge-worthy celeb content, exclusive video clips, astrology updates and more!

After the game ended, my mother and father were introduced, but before they could exchange information, my grandmother interrupted them and said my father — who had something of a reputation back in the day — had no business talking to her daughter. Later, after getting her number from a mutual friend, my father called only to have my grandmother refuse him again, telling my mother that “he left a number, but I balled it up and threw it away after I hung up.” After my mother and grandmother “passed words,” my grandmother called my father’s mother to get his phone number, inciting another controversy.

“That woman is too old to be asking after you,” my father’s mother told him. Eventually, they managed to get each other on the phone and arrange a date for the next week. This was early August and by Christmas they were engaged. Just before St. Patrick’s Day a few months later, they got married and stayed married for four decades until my father’s passing a few years ago.

I had two serious relationships prior to meeting my wife, and I managed to sabotage both by worrying too much about whether or not I deserved love, waffling between my deep-seated fear of ending up alone and the belief that it might be better for everyone if I did. I had bad asthma when I was younger — so bad that my parents took out a life insurance policy on me so that, if I died, the medical debt I accrued would be at least somewhat attenuated. One bad flare-up caused me to be homeschooled the second semester of my junior year of high school. Another hospitalized me for several weeks at the tail end of my sophomore year of college.

I hated myself for not being able to breathe properly. Each time I recovered I could never fully shake the thought that the attack that would take my life was one bad allergic reaction away. My asthma improved with age, but the belief that I would die young never left me and so I pushed people away. I kept my friends at a distance and broke relationships off before they got too serious. After a particularly bad break-up, I took a good look at myself and saw my behavior for what it was: cowardice. No one knows how long life or love will last. No one knows how or why their story will end so why was I living as if I did?

It took one chance meeting at coffee shop — we were both graduate students at the time. I was there working on grant applications, she was there to meet a classmate who just so happened to be a friend of mine for a group project — for me to know that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with my wife (but three for her to remember my name). Three months of dating for us to brooch the topic of marriage, and six to get engaged. Even now, I can’t put my finger on what drew me to her or her to me but, I feel whatever it is in one way or another, every day. Until she comes to her senses, I’ll be around.

Italo Calvino writes in If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler that “the ultimate meaning to which all stories refer has two faces: the continuity of life, the inevitability of death.” It took me a long time to realize I’d be happier focusing on the former rather than the latter.

Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has urged President John Dramani Mahama not to punish the Acting Chief Executive of the Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, for gifting dollars to popular former fetish priestess now turned evangelist, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem and monitored by GhanaWeb on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, he acknowledged the public outrage surrounding the matter but indicated that the incident is being blown out of proportion for political reasons.

“Absolutely, there should be no punishment, but it should be a lesson to all of us, and Sammy Gyamfi should know that his foes are many because of how he demolished the bad governance of the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia government with his analysis and work.

“The people trying to score political points must exercise restraint. I know there are attempts to exaggerate the matter by some people with a political agenda. Some individuals are peeved, particularly NDC foot soldiers, but he cannot settle or give money to everyone,” he stated.

The viral video, which quickly gained traction on social media, drew mixed reactions, with some NDC foot soldiers and political commentators calling for Gyamfi’s resignation or removal.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that the government has taken into account concerns raised about the public regarding the recent conduct of Sammy Gyamfi.

In a bold move to spur job creation and unlock creative potential, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang has hosted renowned U.S. philanthropist Dr. Marie Lemelle and Hollywood actor Dr. Hassan Rasheed, best known for his role as a King’s Guard in Black Panther for strategic discussions on arts-led development in the constituency.

Together, they are working to establish one of Africa’s largest movie studios in Abuakwa South, a transformative initiative aimed at creating employment for the youth, nurturing local talent, and contributing to Ghana’s broader economic growth.

As part of their visit, the delegation toured the prestigious Ofori Panin Palace, where they experienced the rich culture and traditions of the Akyem Abuakwa state.

The visit was both symbolic and strategic in reconnecting diasporans with their roots while exploring creative industry partnerships in Abuakwa South to unlock employment opportunities for the Ghanaian youth.

Dr. Marie Lemelle who is a renowned philanthropist and publicist affirmed her strong commitment and desire to supporting the constituency’s creative arts sector.

She revealed that plans are well advanced in establishing one of the continent’s biggest movie studios and expressed optimism about selecting Abuakwa South as the location for the ambitious project.

She noted that the proposed arts hub will train practitioners in areas such as costuming, sound, and video engineering to meet international standards.

The ultimate goal, she said, is to position Ghana and Africa on the global creative arts stage, drive economic growth, and tackle youth unemployment across the continent.

Dr. Hassan Rasheed described the visit as a powerful emotional and cultural reconnection. He urged Africans in the diaspora to return and contribute to development efforts, highlighting the vast potential in communities like Abuakwa South and pledging continued support to help attract global attention and investment to the local creative economy.

The MP, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang however expressed deep appreciation for the visit and described the partnership as a transformational collaboration. He emphasised its potential to position the constituency as a center for economic empowerment and cultural pride.

MP for Abuakwa South further highlighted the constituency’s strategic location between Ghana’s administrative capital, Accra, and its commercial hub, Kumasi. Dr. Agyemang assured that his office stands ready to facilitate land acquisition and provide the necessary documentation to expedite the project, creating meaningful job opportunities for the youth and contributing significantly to national economic growth.

Ghana Railway Dev’t Authority distances itself from ongoing strike

0

The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has clarified that the ongoing industrial action by workers of the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) has no connection to it and does not affect its operations.

Workers of the GRCL today began a sit-down strike across the country to demand their eight months’ salary arrears.

The over 900 workers say the government has delayed in honouring its obligation, leaving them frustrated. The workers were seen clad in red armbands, protesting the undue delay in payment.

In a press statement issued by Dr Frederick Appoh, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the GRDA, the authority emphasised that the two institutions—GRDA and GRCL—are separate entities with distinct legal roles and responsibilities.

While the GRDA, established under the Railways Act, 2008 (Act 779), is responsible for the ownership, development, maintenance, and regulation of railway infrastructure, the GRCL operates railway services including passenger and freight transport.

“We wish to assure the public that the GRDA remains fully operational and has not initiated or endorsed any form of public demonstration on any issue,” the statement said.

Dr. Appoh noted that the GRDA is currently focused on final preparations for the operationalisation of the newly constructed 97-kilometre Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line. The project is supported by two newly procured trains as part of efforts to modernize Ghana’s railway network.

He reiterated that there will be no disruption to the Authority’s work and urged the public to distinguish between the GRDA and the GRCL.

“Our staff remain dedicated to advancing key projects and delivering efficient railway infrastructure for national development,” the statement added.

The GRDA thanked the public for its continued support and understanding as it works to fulfill its mandate under Ghana’s Railway Master Plan.

Clarification on Demonstration by Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL)

Accra, May 12, 2025

The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) wishes to clarify that the industrial action taken by the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, is entirely unrelated to the GRDA.

The GRDA and the GRCL are separate entities with distinct legal mandates. The GRDA was established under the Railways Act, 2008 (Act 779) to own, develop, maintain and regulate railway infrastructure in Ghana. Since the coming into force of Act 779, the GRCL, a state-owned limited liability company, has focused mainly on operating railway services, including passenger and freight transport.

We wish to assure the public that the GRDA remains fully operational and has not initiated or endorsed any form of public demonstration on any issue. We are, indeed, focused on final preparations for the operationalisation of the newly constructed 97-kilometre Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line, supported by two new trains government has procured.

This milestone reflects GRDA’s continued commitment to fulfilling its infrastructure development mandate and streamlining operational requirements of the new Standard Gauge railway lines we are leading to develop through the Railway Master Plan of Ghana. We reiterate that, there is no disruption to our work, and our operations remain unaffected by any industrial action by the GRCL.

We encourage the public to distinguish between the two institutions and note that the planned strike by the GRCL does not impact the GRDA or our activities. Our staff remain dedicated to advancing key projects and delivering efficient railway infrastructure for national development.

We thank the public for its continued support and understanding.

Signed
Dr Frederick Appoh
Acting Chief Executive Officer

Adu-Boahene re-arrested

Kwabena Adu-Boahene is former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau play videoKwabena Adu-Boahene is former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau

The embattled former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has reportedly been arrested for another crime.

The announcement of his arrest was made by his lawyer, Sammuel Atta Akyea, during court proceedings on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

Speaking to the media after court proceedings on Tuesday, Atta Akyea, a former Member of Parliament for Akyem Abuakwa South, said his client was arrested again after his release on Tuesday, after serving his seven-day remand in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

He indicated that the arrest was in relation to a different crime that had to do with National Security providing internet services to Ghana Water Limited.

It can be recalled that the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akurutinga Ayine, disclosed that ongoing investigations have uncovered yet another fraudulent scheme involving Adu-Boahene.

It has been revealed that Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has been making monthly payments of at least GH¢1.3 million into the private accounts of Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau.

Speaking at a press briefing on April 30, 2025, the Attorney General said that these payments were disguised as part of an internet provision contract with the National Signals Bureau (NSB), raising serious concerns about the misuse of public funds.

Dr Ayine further disclosed that the payments had been occurring for several months, with no clear evidence linking the transfers to any legitimate services provided by Kwabena Adu-Boahene or the NSB.

He stated that his office is currently scrutinising the details of the contract, which appears to have been fabricated to conceal the illicit payments.

The Attorney General has already charged Adu-Boahene with 11 offences for allegedly transferring GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to his personal account, among other crimes.

“In his capacity as Director of the National Signals Bureau, Mr Adu-Boahene on 30 January, 2020, signed a contract on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the National Security on one hand, and on the other hand, an Israeli company named RLC Holdings Limited. The contract was for the purchase of a cyber defence system software at a price of $7 million,” the Attorney General said.

Providing further details, Dr Ayine disclosed that just days after signing the agreement, Adu-Boahene initiated a suspicious transaction.

“On 6 February, 2020, he then transferred an initial amount of GH¢27,100,000 from the National Signals Bureau account at Fidelity Bank to a private BNC account at UMB. Official documentation on the transfer reveals that the amount was for the payment of cyber defence system software. He transferred the money to his private company,” he told the media.

According to Dr Ayine, investigations further uncovered that the former NSB boss allegedly channeled the funds not only into his personal account but also into accounts belonging to his wife.

Power stability to return after May-June maintenance – Energy minister

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has given assurance that Ghanaians will enjoy a stable power supply after June, following major maintenance works carried out on several power plants across the country.

The minister explained that many of Ghana’s power plants have exceeded their maximum recommended operating hours and urgently require servicing to prevent long-term damage.

Reacting to growing public concerns over recent intermittent power outages, popularly known as ‘dumsor’, Jinapor stated in an interview with TV3 that; “What has come to light is that many thermal plants scheduled for regular maintenance in 2024 were left unattended because the government at the time chose not to carry it out.

“As we go through this maintenance, it will cause some disruption, but it is for the greater good. We must do this to ensure the plants remain strong and resilient.”

Jinapor further stated that; “From what I understand, May will see major maintenance, while June will require minimal maintenance. So, barring any unforeseen circumstances, we should have a stable power supply.”

He appealed to Ghanaians to exercise patience as the government is working assiduously to minimise the impact of dumsor.

Zambia warns diplomats after US reveals ‘systematic’ aid theft

Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe says envoys should not address the government through the press Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe says envoys should not address the government through the press

Zambia’s foreign minister has warned diplomats against interfering in the country’s affairs, days after the US ambassador raised concerns about the “systematic theft” of drugs donated to the southern African state.

Mulambo Haimbe said there was an “increasing tendency” by envoys to ignore diplomatic channels, and this could undermine the “spirit of mutual respect”.

He did not name anyone, but his comments were seen as being directed at the US ambassador to Lusaka, Michael Gonzales.

He added that he had decided to go public after holding more than 30 fruitless meetings with senior Zambian officials.

In his response, Haimbe said that addressing the government through the media amounted to interference and was in breach of diplomatic conventions.

“We remain open to addressing any matters of concern through appropriate diplomatic channels,” the minister added.

Last week, the US embassy said it had presented its findings of the alleged corruption to Zambian officials in April last year, and had offered help to stop further theft and to bring the culprits to justice.

However, no action was taken by the Zambian authorities, it added.

On Monday, Zambia’s Home Affairs Minister Jacob Mwiimbu said that a forensic audit on the alleged theft had been completed and handed over to security agencies for further action.

About 75 people have been arrested in a countrywide crackdown that saw more than 400 health facilities raided over the alleged scam, he said.

“There will be no sacred cows in this pursuit,” Mwiimbu added.

Gonzales said that an inspection carried out by US officials at more than 2,000 pharmacies last year had found that most were selling drugs and medical supplies donated by the US.

Zambia’s Health Minister Elijah Muchima earlier said the problem of theft predated the current government, which took office in 2021.

Muchima also said several Zambian officials had been sacked following the thefts identified by the US, and that “an advanced digital stock tracking system” had been set up to monitor the supply of medicines.

The cut in US assistance, expected to take effect next year, would affect drugs to treat malaria, HIV and TB.

But the health minister has reassured Zambians that there were sufficient stocks of all drugs so there was “no immediate risk of shortages”.

Gonzales said the recent US measure was separate to the foreign aid freeze announced by President Donald Trump in January.

The freeze has affected health programmes across Africa, including shipments of critical medical supplies, among them HIV drugs.

In March, Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema said Trump had “slapped us on both cheeks”, saying it was time for his country to strengthen its treasury to procure its own medicines.

The US accounts for about a third of public health spending in Zambia, according to the US embassy.

Over 14,000 girls impregnated in Bono Region-Nursing Director

0

By Dennis Peprah

Sunyani, (Bono), May 13, GNA – The Bono Region recorded 14,877 teenage pregnancies from 2021 to 2024, Miss Rita Adjoa Ansong, the Deputy Director of Nursing Services, Public Health at the Bono Regional Directorate of Health has said.

She said the region also recorded 1,188 cases of abortion within the same period, saying the pregnancies and the abortions were recorded among girls between 15 years and 19 years.

Ms Ansong was speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on the African Vaccination Week (AVW), and the Child Health Promotion Week (CHPW) organised by the Bono Regional Directorate of Health in Sunyani.

In a breakdown, she said a total of 3,999 pregnancies and 388 cases of abortions were recorded in 2021, 4,058 pregnancies and 351 abortions in 2022 as well 3,492 pregnancies, with 217 abortions in 2024 and 3,328 pregnancies and 282 abortions in 2024.

Describing the situation as worrying, Ms Asong called on stakeholders for support towards improvement in the region’s Family Planning (FP) coverage among sexually active teenage girls to stem the pregnancies.

She indicated that FP enabled girls to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health and thereby provided an opportunity for them to continue with their education.

Ms Ansong said certain myths and misconceptions, lack of community support and outmoded cultural and religious beliefs obstructed girls and women from accessing the various methods of FP services.

She said the regional coverage for FP services offered in 2024 was 39.58 per cent of expected women and girls in their reproductive age as compared to 36.45 per cent in 2023.

The acceptor rate for 2024 showed an increase rate of 0.08 percent over the previous year, saying the marginal achievement was of partner collaboration and commodity supply, re registration of long-acting reversible contraceptive method (LARC).

Ms Asong added that free services of commodities from Marie Stopes, DKT and the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) were also a key contributor towards improving the acceptor rate.

She emphasised that FP empowered women and girls to make informed choices about their future, leading to healthier pregnancies and reduced maternal deaths, and called on the stakeholders and the media to help intensify awareness creation and tackle the barriers.

Earlier, Dr Prince Quarshie, the Deputy Director, Public Health at the Bono Regional Directorate of Health, explained that the objective of the meeting was to raise awareness among stakeholders and the public about the importance of immunization and the full spectrum of child health services available in the country.

It further served as a platform to strengthen collaboration among key stakeholders, including government agencies, development partners, community leaders, health professionals, and the media.

The AVW was established in 2010 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to promote immunization as a lifesaving intervention and celebrated annually on the last week of April (24th to 30th).

Dr Quarshie explained that with the CHPW, it was introduced in 2004 by the Ministry of Health to improve child survival rates in the country and observed on May 5th , to May 9th , focusing on nutrition, immunization and preventive care for children under five years.

Atta Akyea slams “unjustified” re-arrest of former NSB Boss

0

Samuel Atta Akyea, legal counsel for former National Signals Bureau boss Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has criticised what he described as an unjustified re-arrest of his client—despite the expiration of a court-ordered remand.

Adu-Boahene, who is facing charges of stealing, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state, was initially remanded on Friday, May 2, for seven working days over allegations of witness tampering.

However, following the expiration of the remand, he was reportedly released briefly before being re-arrested and returned to the custody of the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO).

Speaking to journalists at the court premises on Tuesday, May 13, Mr. Atta Akyea expressed frustration over the development, saying it undermined due process.

“At the last sitting, the judge ordered that he should have his freedom on Monday, May 12. They said they have another matter they are investigating concerning him. So, when he was supposed to have his freedom, by their calculations, they released him at midnight and rearrested him on the basis of a new matter they were looking at.

“The question is, in the period when he had his freedom, why didn’t they deal with the matter?”

He further questioned the motives behind the move, suggesting it may be part of a broader attempt to keep his client unjustly detained.

“Is somebody very excited over the incarceration of another Ghanaian, with all manner of tactics…that is unfortunate. He’s gone back to EOCO. I’m going back there to find out what the new issue is.”

Mr. Atta Akyea also argued that his client is not a flight risk and is already on substantial bail, calling on authorities to uphold the principles of justice and fair treatment.

“He’s on huge bail, he’s leaving nowhere, I believe that they should come clean that this is a personal vendetta. This is a man you believe you have some criminal case against, you give him space to defend himself and give him also the freedom.

“Even murderers are bailable, I don’t think we’re going to rewrite the criminal jurisprudence of Ghana because of one man.”

Though the specifics of the new arrest remain unclear, the Attorney General had previously hinted that Mr. Adu-Boahene is under investigation in relation to an internet connectivity case at Ghana Water Limited.

In the main case involving the alleged diversion of GH₵49.1 million, the court has adjourned proceedings to May 26 for a case management conference. The state has filed all witness statements and is expected to disclose them to the defence by May 20.
