Ghanaian student becomes commercial pilot at age 20

On April 18, 2025, 20-year-old Kofi Opoku Agyei achieved a milestone few can boast of at such a young age, he earned his Commercial Pilot License from the United States’ Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), becoming one of the youngest Ghanaians to do so.

Kofi’s aviation journey began in 2023, when he left Ghana to pursue his dream in the United States. With zero prior flight experience, he enrolled at Epic Flight Academy and embarked on a rigorous path of training, theory, and airborne practice.

At just 19 years old, he completed his first solo flight, a defining moment that made him “feel like an actual pilot.” Reflecting on the experience, Kofi shared, “I did three take-offs and landings all by myself. That was the day I earned my wings.”

Since then, Kofi has completed two solo cross-country flights, each exceeding 50 nautical miles. One notable flight took him from New Smyrna Beach Airport (KEVB) to Ocala International Airport, Gainesville Regional Airport, and back, covering a total of 200 nautical miles.

Born and raised in Akropong-Akuapem, Kofi’s rise is not just about aviation, it’s about vision, faith, and resilience.

“Ever since I was a child, I didn’t know what I wanted to become. I had an interest in daring and intense jobs, but I wasn’t sure what path to take,” he said.

It wasn’t until his final year of Senior High School that he felt a “purposeful call from God” to pursue aviation.

Supported by his family, especially his sister, Kofi began training in September 2023. In just four months, he completed his first solo, then earned his Private Pilot License, followed by Instrument and Commercial certifications.

His journey was not without fear.

“On my very first flight, I was scared and nauseous. I know that’s the last thing you want to hear from a pilot,” he laughed. “But my instructor, Kyle Sears, believed in me and reminded me that even great aviators were once scared.”

Flying solo, he said, gave him a sense of freedom and confidence, “It was nerve-wracking, but also one of the most liberating experiences of my life.”

Kofi’s dream doesn’t end with his license. He aspires to work with top-tier airlines like Delta, United, and Emirates. But more importantly, he hopes to return home one day to establish a flight academy in Ghana, to invest in the next generation of dreamers.

“No matter where you find yourself in the world, it’s important to give back, either with your expertise or your resources,” he emphasised.

“I want people from humble backgrounds to look at my story and know that with God, hard work, and perseverance, anything is possible.”

Ghana’s U-15 boys’ team has continued their impressive start to the 2025 CAF African Schools Championship, defeating South Africa on matchday two.

They edged past the South African side with a narrow 1-0 victory, extending their winning streak to two and maintaining a perfect record in the tournament.

Ignatius Cyril Hagan scored the decisive goal, tapping in from close range after a sensational run by John Annor.

Annor showcased his skill by breezing past two defenders before unselfishly squaring the ball to Hagan, who calmly slotted it home.

Ghana will conclude their group stage campaign later today, April 24, 2025, when they face Algeria.

This is the third edition of the competition, which features eight nations competing in both the boys’ and girls’ U-15 categories.

Benin admits that 54 soldiers killed in attack by al-Qaeda group

A presidential spokesman described the killings as a “heavy loss” A presidential spokesman described the killings as a “heavy loss”

Benin’s government has admitted that 54 soldiers were killed by suspected jihadists in the country’s north last week near the borders with Burkina Faso and Niger.

The authorities had previously said that only eight soldiers were killed.

The revised figure makes it the deadliest known attack since insurgents began operating in northern Benin at the beginning of the decade.

The attack has been claimed by an al-Qaeda-linked group – Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen, (Jnim), which is based in Mali but has in recent years expanded its operations to neighbouring countries.

The jihadist group had said it killed 70 soldiers in raids on two military posts in the north, according to intelligence group SITE.

Jnim is one of several jihadist groups operating in West Africa’s Sahel region, especially Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, where the military governments are struggling to contain the insurgency.

Benin and Togo have seen a rise in jihadist activity in recent years, as groups linked to Islamic State and al-Qaeda spread to the south.

“Heavy losses for the nation,” wrote presidential spokesman Serge Nonvignon in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

Another government spokesperson, Wilfried Leandre Houngbedji, said that Benin was determined to continue the fight against the jihadists.

“We won’t give in… I can assure you that sooner or later, sooner or later, we will win,” he said.

‘If the President Can Travel Privately, Why Is the Chief Justice Suspended?’

0

The Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, has raised concerns over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo, suggesting that the grounds for her removal may be inconsistent with the actions of President John Dramani Mahama as reported by Ghana Web.

Darko’s comments came after the president’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice, who was reportedly traveling with her daughter on an official trip.

During an interview on Oyerepa TV on April 23, 2025, Darko questioned the fairness of the suspension, especially in light of the president’s own travel practices.

“The president travels in Ghana’s private jet with his son, who doesn’t work for any government institution. Has he been fired?” Darko remarked, casting doubt on the consistency of accountability within the government.

Darko, a vocal critic of what he perceives as double standards, emphasized the importance of the Chief Justice’s role in the country’s governance.

“When you mention the four most important people in Ghana, she is one of them: the President, the Vice President, the Speaker, and the Chief Justice,” he said, revealing her vital position within the country’s political structure.

The MP further warned that such actions could set a troubling precedent for Ghana’s democratic values.

“We need to do better,” Darko stressed, urging the country to reflect on their democratic progress and the consequences of undermining the institutions.

Religion, ethnicity not part of factors that caused NPP’s defeat — Dr Bawumia

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah

Accra, April 24, GNA – The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has discounted claims that religion and ethnicity caused his electoral defeat in the 2024 Election.

“Some people said that they didn’t vote for us because our presidential candidate was a Muslim. Have you not heard that? …When I heard that, I said this doesn’t make sense. This is not the Ghana that I know,” Dr Bawumia remarked.

Dr Bawumia said those allegations were not only unfounded but also contradicted both party dynamics and post-election research findings and thus described those claims as mere propaganda.

Former Vice President Bawumia made these remarks during his engagement with the NPP officers and staff at the Party’s headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra, ahead of his nationwide “Thank You” tour.

Dr Bawumia pointed out that during the NPP’s internal presidential primaries, he was the only Muslim among 10 aspirants—nine of whom were Christians—yet he emerged as the Party’s choice for the presidential slot.

“So, I being a Muslim could not be the case for the Party’s loss in the polls,” he argued.

He added: “I decided to do some data analysis to test this hypothesis. And when you look at the data, it is very clear. In many constituencies across the country, the NPP presidential candidate performed better than the Christian parliamentary candidates.

“For example, in the Assin South Constituency in the Central Region where my good friend Rev. Ntim Fordjour contested—he is a Reverend Father—but I did better than him in his constituency. He did so well and mobilised the votes for me and I thank him very much,” Dr Bawumia added.

The 2024 NPP Flagbearer noted that if religion were the factor for voting, he should not be performing better than many of the party’s Christian parliamentary candidates.

“So, as a party and country, I’m very happy that religion and tribe have not entered our political discourse.

“We should therefore not allow people to play propaganda with religion and tribe. We are one nation. We will all live together whether we are Muslims or Christians; we will all work together for the good of this country,” Dr Bawumia emphasised.

Commenting on the tour, Dr Bawumia said, unlike the previous tours where the Presidential Candidate alone went, he would embark on the exercise with the Party and invited all the Presidential aspirants in the NPP Presidential Primaries to join the tour as a sign of unity in the party.

The NPP’s Thank You tour will begin from the Western Region on Saturday, April 26,2025 and end in the Central Region.

It is expected to bring together party faithful across the regions as part of efforts to reflect, rebuild, and reposition the party ahead of future elections.

Ghana enforces new export rules for raw rubber, cashew, and shea

0

Effective May 2, 2025, all individuals and businesses involved in the export of unprocessed rubber, cashew, or shea from Ghana will be required to obtain written authorisation from the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA)—a key move to tighten regulatory oversight and enhance value addition in the sector.

This directive, announced in a public notice signed by TCDA Chief Executive Officer, Andy Osei Okrah, is grounded in the Authority’s legal mandate under the Tree Crops Development Authority Act, 2019 (Act 1010) and the Tree Crops Regulations, 2023 (L.I. 2471), which govern the development, processing, and trading of priority crops such as rubber, cashew, shea, mango, coconut, and oil palm.

The TCDA emphasized that Regulation 50 of L.I. 2471 will be activated from the stated date, requiring exporters of the three specified commodities to secure a valid export permit prior to any shipment.

“All actors and stakeholders in the export of raw rubber, cashew, and shea are hereby notified to comply fully with the provisions of the Tree Crops Regulations,” the notice read.

As part of the enforcement measures, licensed exporters are also being urged to regularize their export transactions with the Authority to ensure alignment with statutory guidelines.

In addition, exporters will now be mandated to present proof of payment of TCDA development levies before being issued a Phytosanitary Certificate—a prerequisite for international trade—by the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate (PPRSD). Without this confirmation, the certificate will not be granted.

The Authority further cautioned that non-compliance with the directive constitutes a legal violation and will attract sanctions as stipulated under the TCDA Act.

This initiative forms part of the TCDA’s broader agenda to strengthen regulatory compliance, promote value addition, and bolster Ghana’s economic growth through a more structured and sustainable export system for tree crops.

Researchers, policymakers to discuss health systems  strengthening in Africa – April 29-30 at UG

0

The University of Ghana, through its Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS), is set to host a major continental conference aimed at strengthening health systems in Africa.

The conference is scheduled to take place from April 29 to 30 at the Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research Conference on the theme “Advancing evidence-based innovations for strengthening health systems in Africa.”

The conference is being organised under the auspices of the Sustaining the African Health Initiative Community of Practice (AHI CoP) programme.

It is expected to bring together a broad range of stakeholders including researchers, policymakers, health professionals, and young scientists across Africa.

The Principal Investigator of the AHI CoP programme, Professor Ayaga Bawah, in a statement copied the Ghanaian Times said the conference sought to create a platform for the sharing of innovative practices and evidence-based solutions that contribute to the development of resilient and equitable health systems.

“It will also promote interdisciplinary collaboration and foster linkages between academia, government, and civil society in addressing pressing health system challenges,” he added.

Mr Bawah explained that the event would feature keynote presentations, panel discussions, research presentations, and networking sessions aimed at building capacity and inspiring collaborative initiatives to improve population health outcomes.

He further noted that participants will include representatives from five African countries—Ghana, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia—who are currently implementing AHI-funded projects focused on strengthening health systems and evaluating their impact.

Mr Bawah underscored the importance of the conference in promoting dialogue between researchers and policymakers, as well as providing mentorship opportunities for early-career health systems researchers.

“The conference is timely, as health systems in Africa continue to face complex challenges, including workforce shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and a growing burden of disease,” he said.

“By showcasing innovations that have demonstrated success, we can facilitate learning and scaling of best practices across the continent,” he added.

The AHI CoP programme, hosted by RIPS and funded by the Doris Duke Foundation, aims to foster cross-country learning, continuous capacity building, and sustained improvements in health systems across sub-Saharan Africa.

Ghana’s central bank announces moves to regulate cryptocurrency, sets deadline

0

This cryptocurrency initiative, led by Ghana’s central bank is expected to provide clarity and stability to the industry, ensuring consumer protection while fostering innovation.

The announcement was made by Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, during the African Leaders and Partners Forum, hosted by the EBII Group on the sidelines of the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Asiama explained that the move is contingent on the passage of the Virtual Asset Providers Act, which will grant the Bank of Ghana the authority to license and regulate platforms and participants in the virtual asset space.

The central bank’s decision aligns with a growing trend across Africa to establish clear frameworks for cryptocurrency operations.

To strengthen the regulation of these platforms and assets, the Bank of Ghana is setting up a dedicated unit focused on digital assets,” Dr. Asiama revealed.

In the past, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) issued several public notices clarifying that digital assets are neither recognized as legal tender nor regulated under Ghanaian law.

This stance reflected the central bank’s cautious approach, highlighting the risks associated with unregulated digital currencies, such as fraud, money laundering, and consumer protection concerns.

Similarly, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Ghana maintained a conservative view on digital assets, issuing warnings about the use of cryptocurrencies and clarifying that it does not regulate cryptocurrency offerings or the platforms and exchanges associated with them.

With this new update, Ghana joins the ranks of Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and other African nations that have issued directives on the use, purchase, and transaction of cryptocurrencies.

Ghana’s interest in cryptocurrency regulation began in 2021, when the Bank of Ghana first signaled its intentions to address the growing digital asset market.

The central bank’s initial focus was on ensuring consumer protection and financial stability, particularly as the popularity of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum soared.

Ghana’s regulatory efforts gained momentum in 2023, when the country introduced a comprehensive framework aimed at overseeing the trading and use of digital assets, aligning with global efforts to establish clearer guidelines for cryptocurrency operations.

Dr. Asiama highlighted that central banks across the continent are embracing significant reforms to boost transparency, independence, and credibility.

He further stressed the importance of building a more resilient financial system and enhancing risk management strategies to attract productive capital flows and mitigate potential vulnerabilities.

2024 Election: Why I’m happy Bawumia had more votes than me – Ntim Fordjour

0

Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, says he is happy the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate and flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured more votes in the Assin South constituency than he the MP.

According to him, that was what he worked for, and achieving a positive result was therefore fulfilling.

Rev. Fordjour’s remarks come after Dr. Bawumia refuted claims that his Muslim faith was a key reason behind the party’s loss in the election.

Speaking at the NPP headquarters on Wednesday, April 23, to kick off a Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia described the assertions as baseless and unsupported by evidence, urging Ghanaians to focus on data rather than propaganda.

He further cited the Assin South constituency, noting that he secured more votes than Rev. Fordjour.

Rev. Fordjour garnered 14,899 votes while Dr. Bawumia secured 17,617 votes.

Reacting to this, the former Deputy Education Minister, in an interview on Adom FM’s Naket Kasiebo, said he took no offence, adding that he had promised to help Dr. Bawumia secure an overwhelming victory.

“I was happy Dr. Bawumia garnered more votes than me because that was what I worked for, and I was glad at the end to see that dream fulfilled. My votes dropped because of an independent candidate who polled about 10,000,” he noted.

Military intervenes as traders storm restricted area

0

Heightened tensions in Kumasi’s central business district prompted the deployment of military officers on Thursday, following a dramatic invasion by hundreds of traders at the Adum Blue Light enclave.

The aggrieved traders, defying an existing restriction on the area, reportedly broke through a police cordon to carry out trading activities, escalating the situation and overwhelming initial law enforcement efforts.

In response, authorities called in the military to reinforce security and help restore order. Both police and military personnel are currently on the ground, working to disperse the crowd and prevent further disturbances.

Eyewitnesses say some traders attempted to confront the soldiers, heightening concerns about potential clashes. The security presence remains strong as officials monitor the situation closely.

Atlantic Lithium appeals to government to help save Ghana’s first lithium mine

0

Australia-based mining firm Atlantic Lithium has made an urgent appeal to the government of Ghana for fiscal relief to rescue its planned Ewoyaa lithium project, warning that collapsing global lithium prices have rendered the venture economically unviable.

The company, which has invested approximately $70 million since 2016, is developing what would be Ghana’s first lithium mine.

The project, located near Mankessim in the Central Region, was expected to place Ghana among the world’s top 10 spodumene concentrate producers. However, sharp declines in lithium prices—down more than 80 per cent from their November 2022 peak—have thrown its future into uncertainty.

“We have done the maths and it doesn’t make sense at all,” Atlantic Lithium’s General Manager, Ahmed-Salim Adam, told Reuters. “We have written to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources for urgent help on the fiscals. If not, the project cannot proceed.”

Ghana, already Africa’s leading gold producer, had hoped to benefit from the growing global demand for electric vehicles (EVs) by establishing the Ewoyaa mine as a strategic source of lithium, a key component in EV batteries. The mine was granted a 15-year lease in 2023, with construction expected to begin by the end of 2024.

The project is projected to produce up to 360,000 tons of lithium annually, primarily for export to the United States. But in addition to the commodity price crash, delays in parliamentary ratification of the mining lease have stalled progress. While lithium prices have recently stabilised due to recovering auto production, analysts remain cautious.

“EV-led demand growth remains strong, but it continues to be overwhelmed by mine supply growth,” said Tom Price, Head of Commodities at Panmure Liberum. He also noted that U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed 25% tariff on Chinese EVs has further dampened global demand and price optimism.

Compounding the problem, Ghana’s entry into the lithium market is relatively recent, making it less attractive to investors who may prefer the more established mining regimes of Australia, Chile, and China. The internal rate of return (IRR) on the Ewoyaa project has plunged from a once-attractive 105% to just 13.6%, Adam disclosed.

“Nobody is going to put their money in that. It should have been 30% to make sense,” he said.

In its formal appeal, Atlantic Lithium is seeking several fiscal concessions. These include a reduction in royalty rates from 10% to 5%—in line with what is charged in Ghana’s gold sector—or the adoption of a flexible sliding scale linked to global lithium prices. The company also proposed a review of the 32.5% corporate income tax rate and the removal of import duties on capital equipment.

Without these interventions, the project is unlikely to proceed, Adam warned. “Even if we get ratification done, we can’t get it off the ground.”

Already, the economic pressure has forced the company to scale back its operations. In October 2024, 25 workers were laid off, and an additional 50 are expected to lose their jobs by May 2025. “We will maintain only a skeletal team,” Adam added.

Ghanaian socialite and music investor, Ayisha Modi Ghanaian socialite and music investor, Ayisha Modi

Ghanaian socialite and music investor, Ayisha Modi, has become the centre of attention online after an old video resurfaced in which she confidently stated that nothing can cause a rift between her and dancehall musician Stonebwoy.

In a 2023 interview with Deloris Frimpong Manso, the host asked Ayisha Modi whether she would publicly call out Stonebwoy if their relationship ever falls apart.

Ayisha was asked this question during that period when she had fallen out with many of her industry friends and associates, including those she had once been loyal to or close with.

In response, she noted that she would never publicly denigrate the artiste or his brand if there should be a feud between them.

“God didn’t create me like that so I won’t have any issue with Stonebwoy. Even I didn’t have any issue with Samani when I left the Highgrade family so there is no way I would have a problem with Stonebwoy,” she stated.

She added, “I am that person who would not come out and reveal what transpired between out when we were closed. I know that the moment I speak about our issue, it would be a disgrace not only to the person but myself as well.”

The Managing Director of National Investment Bank PLC (NIB), Dr Doliwura Zakaria, has emphasized the bank’s renewed commitment to driving inclusive, community-led development across Ghana.

He made this known at the second Kwahu Business Forum held at the Mpraeso Social Centre in the Eastern Region where he joined a distinguished group of industry leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and development partners to explore strategies for economic transformation.

The event, which served as a powerful platform for dialogue and collaboration, was themed around innovation, investment, and inclusive growth.

From engaging keynote sessions to high-level networking, the forum sparked a renewed sense of purpose in aligning public-private efforts to accelerate Ghana’s development.

Delivering an address that captivated participants, Dr Zakaria outlined NIB’s intent to replicate its equity model from the Accra Market across all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) nationwide.

“We believe the time has come for local governments to take an active role as equity stakeholders in managing the markets that power their economies,” he said.

Tanzania bans South Africa and Malawi imports as trade row escalates

0

Tanzanian traders have been ordered to halt all shipments to South Africa and Malawi Tanzanian traders have been ordered to halt all shipments to South Africa and Malawi

Tanzania has banned all agricultural imports from South Africa and Malawi in the latest episode of a growing trade row.

“We are taking this step to protect our business interests. This is business – in business, we must all respect each other,” Tanzania’s Agriculture Minister Hussein Bashe said on Wednesday, while confirming the move.

South Africa has for years prohibited the entry of bananas from Tanzania. Malawi, which shares a border with Tanzania, has blocked imports of flour, rice, ginger, bananas and maize from its northern neighbour.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the long-running trade issues have so far failed but Bashe said fresh talks were ongoing.

South African exports to Tanzania of various fruits, including apples and grapes, will be hit. Meanwhile, landlocked Malawi, which has relied on Tanzanian ports to carry its exports such as tobacco, sugar and soybeans to the rest of the world, will have to reroute its goods.

Malawi’s ban on the import of certain produce, announced in March, was designed as a temporary measure covering goods from all countries to protect local producers, according to the authorities in Lilongwe.

“It is a strategic move to create an environment where local businesses can thrive without the immediate pressure of foreign competition,” Malawi’s Trade Minister, Vitumbiko Mumba, said at the time.

Tanzania’s agriculture minister said Malawi’s move had “directly affected” his country’s traders and described the restrictions as “unfair and harmful”.

While confirming the import ban, Bashe assured Tanzanians that it would not threaten their food security.

“No Tanzanian will die from a lack of South African grapes or apples,” he said, adding that, “we are taking these actions to protect Tanzanian interests”.

South Africa and Malawi governments are yet to comment on the ban.

The disagreement appears to already be impacting trade flows within the three countries – all members of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc), a regional political, security and economic body.

On Saturday Bashe posted a social media video showing a pile of rotten bananas in a truck stranded at the border with Malawi, saying it was hard for Tanzania to tolerate the trend.

Malawi has become an increasingly important market for Tanzanian goods in recent years, with exports trebling between 2018 and 2023, according to official Tanzanian figures.

But while Tanzania can seek alternative markets such as in Kenya, Namibia and South Sudan, Malawi may find it harder to get its goods out of the country.

Much of its exports go through the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam, as well as essential imports such as fuel and machinery.

Losing access to Dar es Salaam would likely force Malawi to move shipments through the Mozambican ports of Beira and Nacala – options that may be more expensive.

Bashe argued the ban was not meant to provoke a trade war but to protect Tanzania’s interests.

Why I’m happy Bawumia had more votes than me – Ntim Fordjour

0

Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, has stated that he is happy the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured more votes in his constituency.

According to him, that was what he worked for, and achieving a positive result was fulfilling.

Rev. Fordjour’s remarks come after Dr. Bawumia refuted claims that his Muslim faith was a key reason behind the party’s loss in the election.

Speaking at the NPP headquarters on Wednesday, April 23, to kick off a , Dr.

Reacting to this, the former Deputy Education Minister, in an interview on , said he took no offence, adding that he had promised to help Dr. Bawumia secure an overwhelming victory.

“I was happy Dr. Bawumia garnered more votes than me because that was what I worked for, and I was glad at the end to see that dream fulfilled. My votes dropped because of an independent candidate who polled about 10,000,” he noted.

Tensions escalated in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region on Thursday, April 24, 2025, following a dramatic rejection of the President’s nominee for District Chief Executive (DCE).

Health committee member urges doctors to resume work

0

A member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has called on striking doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) to resume their duties, warning that the ongoing industrial action could endanger the health and lives of people in the Northern Region.

Doctors at TTH on Wednesday, April 23, announced an indefinite suspension of emergency and outpatient services in response to what they described as “unwarranted attacks” by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Tamale North MP, Alhassan Suhuyini.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Thursday, April 24, Dr. Agyemang, who also serves as the MP for Akim Abuakwa South, acknowledged the doctors’ grievances but appealed for a return to service to safeguard public health.

“We are pleading with the doctors here that they should look beyond and do what they always do for the people of the north and anyone that comes into contact with their service,” he urged.

Dr. Agyemang also expressed confidence that the Health Minister had taken lessons from the incident, noting the need for reflection and restraint from all sides.

“Our colleague, the minister, too, I believe he has learnt his lesson, and it calls for soberness. Public service is a thankless service, and once you put your foot out there for it, you should be ready for it. We pray for calmness and we pray that the doctors in the Tamale Teaching Hospital resume their services so that caregiving happens in the north,” he said.

The doctors are demanding an unqualified apology from both the Health Minister and the Tamale North MP to Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, the entire TTH medical staff, and especially personnel at the Accident and Emergency Department.

Beyond the call for apologies, the doctors have also presented a comprehensive list of urgent logistical and infrastructural needs to hospital management. These include a stable water supply, uninterrupted electricity, continuous oxygen delivery, and immediate provision of essential clinical supplies such as gloves, gauze, cotton, face masks, syringes, cannulae, disinfectants, and plaster.

Additional requests include consistent access to laboratory reagents, vital signs monitors, ventilators across various departments, transport incubators, and repairs to key hospital equipment including autoclave machines.

The announcement was contained in a public statement which stated that Ghanaians aged 18 and above, as well as fully-owned Ghanaian companies, are now eligible to apply for various categories of licenses.

It further stated that these applications can be made online via the GoldBod website at goldbod.gov.gh or in person at the organisation’s main office in Accra.

Further categories, including refining, smelting, fabrication, storage, transportation, and importation licenses, will be made available for application starting in July 2025.

The GoldBod also stressed the importance of understanding the legal requirements involved. “An applicant must carefully read, understand and accept the terms and conditions of a license before proceeding to apply for the same,” the statement advised.

The GoldBod reiterated a previous directive for all foreigners to exit the local gold trading market by 30 April 2025. “A breach of this directive shall constitute a punishable offense under the Ghana GoldBod Act, 2025 (ACT 1140),” the Board warned. This decision follows an emergency general assembly meeting over the treatment of the doctors at the Emergency unit of the hospital during the visit by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini and subsequent dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital, Dr. Adam Atiku.

The Tamale Teaching Hospital brouhaha commenced when a patient Bavug Salim passed away over an alleged negligence by health workers at the facility resulting in the dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Peki citizens urged to embrace youth empowerment and leadership roles

0

At this year’s Peki Union Easter Congress in the South Dayi district of the Volta region, Dr. David Kofi Wuaku, former Bank of Ghana executive and founder of Lifeahead Vision Ministries, delivered a keynote address that centred on the urgent need for leadership, unity, and youth empowerment within the Peki Traditional Area.

Held under the unifying spirit of Easter, the annual Congress brought together traditional leaders, residents, and youth from all walks of life in a vibrant celebration of heritage, progress, and community.

A call for collective leadership and investment in youth

Addressing a packed audience that included the President of the Peki Union, Innocent Dake, and other dignitaries, Dr. Wuaku emphasised that leadership is not the responsibility of a few, but a collective duty shared by elders, educators, parents, professionals, and local institutions.

“True leadership happens when all of us come together to create opportunities for the next generation,” he said, quoting former U.S. President John Quincy Adams to underline the essence of inspirational leadership.

Dr. Wuaku stressed that the youth remain the Peki community’s most powerful asset, and that neglecting their growth today would mean compromising the region’s future tomorrow.

Launch of Peki ICT scholarship programme

Dr. Wuaku also unveiled the Peki ICT Scholarship Programme, a flagship initiative that seeks to sponsor talented students from the Peki Traditional Area who wish to pursue university-level studies in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

He highlighted the growing importance of digital literacy in today’s global economy and called for financial barriers to be dismantled in order to unlock the full potential of young people.

“This scholarship is not just about education—it is about empowerment,” he declared. “It is about saying to our young people, ‘We believe in you. Go and become the innovators, the programmers, the problem-solvers our world needs.’”

Leadership training programme to nurture future changemakers

Further solidifying his commitment to youth development, Dr. Wuaku announced a region-wide Leadership Training Programme set to launch this year.

The initiative aims to equip young men and women with critical life and leadership skills such as communication, integrity, teamwork, and service. These, he said, are the cornerstones of both personal and communal progress.

Drawing inspiration from the words of Nelson Mandela, he said, “The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow. But we cannot expect them to lead tomorrow if we do not prepare them today.”

He called upon churches, schools, associations, and institutions across Peki to join hands in cultivating a generation of prepared, passionate, and principled leaders.

A direct message to the youth

Turning directly to the younger members of the audience, Dr. Wuaku offered heartfelt counsel: “Focus on what matters most… Discover your purpose early, and chase it with discipline and passion. Avoid shortcuts. Avoid the noise.”

Echoing the resilience of former U.S. President Barack Obama, he concluded his appeal with: “Press on, sons and daughters of Peki. Press on towards your purpose.”

A renewed call for unity and purpose

Dr. Wuaku’s speech concluded with a rousing call for collective action and a shared vision for the future of Peki. He urged all present to seize the spirit of Easter as a moment to recommit to unity, collaboration, and purpose-driven leadership.

“Let this Congress be the beginning of a renewed spirit in all of us,” he said. “Let it remind us of who we are, and what we can become when we lead together, build together, and rise together.”

With the launch of the ICT Scholarship and Leadership Training initiatives, Dr. Wuaku’s message resonated as both a challenge and an invitation—a challenge to rise to the occasion of youth empowerment, and an invitation to walk hand-in-hand into a brighter, more resilient future for the people of Peki.

Ayuda App launched to tackle unemployment in Ghana

0

A new digital platform, Ayuda, has been launched to address Ghana’s rising youth unemployment by connecting users with skilled local artisans, such as plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and more.

At the official unveiling of the Ayuda App, Laurinda Soreano, Head of Business and Marketing at Ayuda, made an urgent call for stronger public-private collaboration to combat unemployment and poverty.

“With over 7 million Ghanaians living in multidimensional poverty, we cannot afford to treat youth unemployment as business as usual,” she said.

She continued, “In today’s digital world, everything should be accessible online. We don’t want a situation where, after finishing school or completing a technical course, young people are left at home. If you have the expertise and capabilities, you can work. You can work for yourself. You don’t need to be employed by a company to start earning money at the end of the month. We believe in empowering individuals to take charge of their own futures.”

Her remarks come in the wake of the Ghana Statistical Service’s latest Multidimensional Poverty Report, which paints a sobering picture: 7.3 million people—approximately 24.3% of households—are now classified as multi-dimensionally poor. This statistic reflects not only economic hardship but also a lack of access to essential services, employment, and education.

Ayuda seeks to digitise access to the informal sector, empowering skilled individuals—particularly the youth—to find work and generate income.

Vanessa Baah Williams, Head of Customer Services at Ayuda, added, “Whether you’re a student looking for part-time work or someone who’s unemployed and ready to start your own business, Ayuda provides a platform for you to thrive.”

With joblessness at an all-time high, stakeholders from various sectors are rallying behind tech-driven solutions to address the root causes of poverty and unemployment in the country.

Ghanaian socialite Ayisha Modi (L) and dancehall musician Stonebwoy (R) Ghanaian socialite Ayisha Modi (L) and dancehall musician Stonebwoy (R)

Ghanaian socialite and music investor Ayisha Modi has launched a series of attacks against her once-revered idol and close associate, Stonebwoy.

In a video circulating on social media as of April 24, 2025, Ayisha Modi, who now appears to be on bad terms with the dancehall musician, has warned him to tread carefully in his dealings with her.

Ayisha revealed that she left the BHIM Camp back in 2022, citing ingratitude and mistreatment from Stonebwoy, despite the many times she had publicly stood by him.

She vowed that the musician would face consequences for the emotional trauma he allegedly put her through.

Ayisha’s recent outburst was triggered by an incident involving one of Stonebwoy’s purported bodyguards, who reportedly insulted her for supporting King Paluta’s ‘Artiste of the Year’ campaign at the forthcoming TGMAs.

This incident further provoked an already hurt Ayisha, who saw it as the perfect opportunity to strike back at Stonebwoy, especially for the alleged years of mistreatment and for looking on while she was disrespected by “a mere bodyguard.”

“Stonebwoy watch your back because I will mafia you on the streets. I swear to God. Stonebwoy I will fight you until we both depart from Earth. I will never speak to Stonebwoy again until I die,” she stated.

She went on further to note, “I have taken care of Stonebwoy before and I have also paid his children’s school fees before. I haven’t received a cedi from him before. He called me a prostitute, meanwhile, his sister had been sleeping with all the BHIM native boys.”

Recounting her pain and struggles during her association with Stonebwoy, Ayisha Modi alleged that despite all her sacrifices, Stonebwoy publicly disrespected her in an interview with Accra FM’s Nana Romeo, an incident she still holds close to heart to this day.

“Stonebwoy had an interview with Nana Romeo three years ago and he called me a prostitute. People sent the video to me. Even with all that I was still supporting him,” she stated.

She continued, “Three years ago Stonebwoy insulted me because I had called his childhood friend to order. Meanwhile, the said person called me and talked evil about Stonebwoy, and upon all of that I even dashed him GH¢2,000 for his wife to be discharged from the hospital after giving birth. The guy is now Stonebwoy’s personal bodyguard and if he is insulting me, all Stonebwoy can say is he doesn’t have his number.”

Ayisha Modi further claimed that she fell into depression as a result of the unfortunate experiences she encountered during her time with the BHIM Camp.

“I became depressed. Even when he was insulting me, I was still wearing his BHIM T-shirt. I became sick when I was facing the trauma yet I was posting him on my Instagram page,” she added.

Former Upper East Regional Minister drops bombshell on Tamale Teaching Hospital management

0

Paulina Patience Tangoba Abayage is a former Upper East Regional Minister Paulina Patience Tangoba Abayage is a former Upper East Regional Minister

A former Upper East Regional Minister, Paulina Patience Tangoba Abayage, has weighed in on the ongoing situation at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), attributing the crisis to managerial ineptitude.

She expressed the view that the challenges facing the hospital which are impacting the smooth delivery of healthcare services are largely the result of a collapsed management system.

Recounting her experience with the facility in March 2023, she said that a staff member from TTH had reached out to her for assistance in securing a medical device—specifically a mammogram machine which is a specialised x-ray device used primarily for the early detection of breast cancer.

“In March 2023 a young lady on this app, I’m sure she’ll be reading, reached out in desperation to me to help get a mammogram machine for TTH because a big hospital like that serving the entire northern sector had not a single one,” she posted on Facebook on April 23, 2025.

According to her, she began taking steps to assist by reaching out to some of her colleagues, leveraging their influence in an effort to help secure the equipment for the hospital in response to the request made by the staff member.

She stated that funds were provided by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) through its former CEO, Mustapha Hamid, to the hospital’s management for the procurement of the mammogram machine.

However, she said she was surprised to learn, through the same staff member who had initially contacted her, that the equipment had not been acquired.

“I immediately set to work, contacting KSK to use his huge influence to get one for the hospital. He also got to work immediately and promised to get NPA to provide one. Soon after he sent me a message that NPA, through the CEO Mustapha Hamid had given approval for one for the hospital. Months will go by only for the young lady to get back telling me there was no show! What? I immediately got back to KSK who was equally surprised. I set off to find out what happened because I was told funds had been released,” she continued.

Abayage further disclosed that her inquiries into the matter revealed discrepancies regarding the handling of the funds.

She noted that upon the release of the money, the management of TTH returned the funds to the NPA, citing the reason that the amount was issued in cedis while the quoted price for the equipment was in dollars.

“Know what I found out? Management made the request to NPA quoting in Ghana Cedis. When the funds were released, they noticed discrepancies because the cost of the machine was in dollars and they had been given funds in cedis. So, they returned the money to the source for corrections to be made (or something to that effect). SICK, isn’t it?” she added.

According to her, as a result of this development, the hospital was unable to procure the mammogram machine.

She added that her late sister, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was receiving care at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, had to travel to Accra for diagnostic tests due to the unavailability of the equipment at the facility.

“As fate will visit it on me, a year later, my senior sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to be consulting at same TTH. They had no mammogram machine and had to be doing some ridiculous forth and back: Accra-TTH, where tissue samples are taken to Accra for testing etc. On one such simple occasions, she went into theatre and never recovered from unconsciousness till she died in July 2024,” she recounted.

Reacting to the doctors’ suspension of emergency and OPD services along with their subsequent demands at the TTH, Abayage commended the medical professionals for taking a stand against the facility’s management.

She praised their initiative in demanding improved working conditions and essential medical equipment to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery.

DR Congo and M23 rebels reach ceasefire deal in Qatar talks

0

It is the latest truce since the rebels stepped up an offensive in eastern DR Congo It is the latest truce since the rebels stepped up an offensive in eastern DR Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have agreed to halt fighting in the east of the country until peace talks mediated by Qatar reach their “conclusion”.

It is the latest truce deal since the rebels stepped up an offensive in eastern DR Congo where authorities say 7,000 people have been killed since January.

Both sides on Wednesday jointly announced to work towards peace following more than a week of talks, which they described as “frank and constructive”.

Last month, Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame also reaffirmed their commitment to an “unconditional” ceasefire in a surprise meeting in Doha.

The decades-long conflict has intensified since January when M23 staged an unprecedented offensive, seizing Goma and Bukavu – eastern Congo’s two largest cities – and sparking fears of a wider regional war.

DR Congo accuses Rwanda of arming the M23 and sending troops to support the rebels in the conflict. Despite assertions from both the UN and US, Rwanda has denied supporting the M23.

Rwanda has said its forces are acting in self-defence against the Congolese army and allied militias, some of which it accuses of links to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

DR Congo also accuses Rwanda of illegally exploiting its mineral deposits in the east of the country, which Rwanda denies.

In a joint statement released separately by the M23 and Congolese government on Wednesday, each side pledged to give peace talks a chance.

“By mutual agreement, both parties reaffirm commitment to the immediate cessation of hostilities, a categorical rejection of any hate speech, intimidation, and call on all local communities to uphold these commitments,” they said in a statement read on Congolese national TV and and posted on X by the M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka.

They said the ceasefire would apply “throughout the duration of the talks and until their conclusion”.

Sources in the Qatar talks told Reuters news agency that the outcome of the meetings were almost derailed by “technical” issues.

It is not clear how long the truce will hold as several ceasefires have been agreed since 2021, before later collapsing.

Belgium’s Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Prevot termed the truce a “crucial step towards ending the violence”.

Qatar has been mediating between the two parties after the rebels refused to attend peace talks in Angola last month.

The Congolese government had long refused to hold direct talks with M23, branding it a “terrorist” group.

My pastor husband cheated on me — here’s why I helped him get ready for dates with his ‘side chicks’

0

Some of the worst news a spouse could find out is that their partner is cheating.

One woman knew and accepted that her husband was a cheater, but instead of getting mad or divorcing him, she actually helped him get ready for his dates to keep their marriage intact.

Kelley and Reginald Steele have experienced a lot of highs and lows in their 32-year marriage.

In a recent “Dear Future Wifey” podcast episode, the high school sweethearts admitted that there was infidelity in their marriage from the beginning, according to News.com/au.

The couple got married in 1993 when they found out Kelley was pregnant. Reginald, who is the founder of Kingdom Church in Phoenix, Arizona, admitted in the episode that he would give his wife a hard time for not sharing his faith.

The couple got married in 1993 when they found out Kelley was pregnant.

Yet, this husband was a bit hypocritical back in his day because shortly after getting married — he supposedly “left this ‘holy lifestyle’” and went “back to smoking weed, drinking, chasing women.”

“We would fight. Our house became the party house,” Kelley said. And as expected, she wasn’t handling her husband’s cheating ways well.

At this point, one would’ve expected Kelley to leave her husband and never look back.

However, she didn’t want to repeat what her mother did when Kelley was a little girl — leave her husband and break up the family.

After having a few holy talks with God, Kelley said she “had a radical heart shift from that moment. I just completely changed as a person,” she explained.

The couple grew closer as Kelley let her husband act on his wandering eye.

couple
The couple grew closer as Kelley let her husband act on his wandering eye.

“I’d tell her, ‘You’re my starter, but I got other ones on the bench,’” Reginald said.

“I was okay with it as long as I was first,” his wife responded in agreement.

“Although he would go out for weekends, I would literally help him get ready to go meet a side chick by ironing his clothes and getting him ready for the night,” the devoted wife said.

She went on to say that she “didn’t want him to be lost.”

The host of the podcast questioned why Reginald also kept choosing his wife when he had so many options of women. His response? It was not as deep as one would hope.

“She lived down the street, but all my other girlfriends lived 30 minutes away. She would also feed me and give me money.”

Although the couple didn’t say if heating is still going on in their marriage — it was admitted that all of these antics took place within the first few years of their time together.

Former Deputy AG Defends Chief Justice Amid Removal Petitions

0

Ms Diana Asonaba Dapaah,

Diana Asonaba Dapaah, former Deputy Attorney General, has strongly criticized petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, calling them baseless and damaging to judicial independence.

Her intervention comes as a parliamentary committee reviews multiple petitions against the Chief Justice.

In a detailed statement, Dapaah questioned the validity of the petitions, which cite judicial decisions and administrative matters as grounds for removal. She noted that many of the referenced cases were decided by panels of justices, not solely by the Chief Justice. “How can collective judicial decisions become grounds for removing one justice?” she asked. The former deputy AG also dismissed claims of political bias as contradictory, noting that all judicial appointments in Ghana involve political processes.

The statement addressed specific allegations regarding judicial entitlements, clarifying that the Chief Justice’s travel benefits are constitutionally mandated for heads of government branches. Dapaah emphasized that such provisions are standard across democratic systems and not personal privileges.

Legal observers view Dapaah’s intervention as significant given her prosecutorial background. Her argument that the petitions threaten judicial independence has resonated with some legal professionals, while others maintain that legitimate questions about judicial administration remain. The debate occurs against Ghana’s historical backdrop of judicial challenges, including the 1982 murders of judges during political unrest.

As the committee continues its review, the controversy highlights ongoing tensions between judicial independence and accountability in Ghana’s democracy. The outcome may set important precedents for how the country balances these principles moving forward. With public attention focused on the process, many await the committee’s findings and any potential parliamentary action.

In a post on X on April 21, the rapper and entrepreneur, born Sylvanus Dodji Jeoffrey, responded to persistent calls from fans urging the group to rekindle its musical flame. But according to him, the 4×4 era is over for good.

“Why everybody dey ask when 4×4 dey come back? Massa 4×4 no dey come back anywhere. We are too old to form a group again… Our job is done. Long time ago. No more 4×4. We are good as brothers,” he posted.

Formed in 2000, 4×4 — originally made up of Captain Planet, Coded (formerly known as Abortion), and later joined by Fresh Prince — quickly rose to fame with a unique blend of hip-hop and Afrobeat. They dominated the Ghanaian music scene for years with back-to-back hits and won several accolades. However, the group went inactive around 2015, with each member branching out into solo ventures.

Despite the group’s hiatus, nostalgia for their music has remained strong, prompting recent fan-led campaigns for a possible comeback. Captain Planet, however, made it clear that while they may occasionally perform together, the days of 4×4 as a music-making group are behind them.

“Just enjoy our old tunes,” he added. “We might be performing group songs along the line at some point, but the 4×4 group is not coming back again to make music together again. Everybody, get over it. We are too grown to handle our individual talents. We don’t have to be in a group before doing music.”

Though the statement may come as a disappointment to fans, it also signals a new chapter for the members of 4×4 — one where they honour their legacy while continuing to evolve as solo artists.

For now, it seems, 4×4’s music will live on only in playlists, memories, and maybe the occasional stage appearance — but not in the studio.

New Government, New Chief Justice

0

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is certainly almost out of the Chief Justice seat she occupied as head of the judiciary.

For many who have observed the posturing of President John Mahama, the flurry of ‘petitions’ to herald the removal process was not surprising.

Be it as it may, the ‘resetting’ of the judiciary as per the standard of President Mahama has been kick-started at cruising and destructive speed.

As a dream come true for the President, the announcement about the suspension was lapped excitedly by National Democratic Congress (NDC) faithful on social media.

Before the suspension fiat made it to the public domain, NDC platforms were busy sharing a chart listing the membership of the Supreme Court and which President appointed them in a rehearsed fashion.

It turned out that all of them were appointed during the tenure of President Akufo-Addo.

It is as if President Akufo-Addo tampered with the justices’ ages so he could have the opportunity to make nominations to the bench when they hit the age bar. In any case, this uncontrollable act of fate could not have let go the duty of filling the vacancies as per the Constitution established.

The social media entry about the suspension as aforementioned is a journey towards a narrative to justify the resetting project of the President.

Resetting the judiciary as being done by the President comes at a cost.

A new order has been born in the country even though it is one not captured in the Constitution – new government, new Chief Justice and possibly judges of the superior courts.

Undoubtedly, the judiciary has been fully politicised, the repercussions of which action shall live long after President Mahama has completed his resetting agenda and retired.

So many commentaries are being churned out in social, traditional media and street-side parleys.

While some of such commentaries are emanating from non-legal minds, others stem from concerned citizens who understand the implications of politicising the judiciary.

We have reached a stage where judgments and rulings will be given political colours, and that is not good for the image of the judiciary.

Couldn’t we have done better under the circumstances as citizens who would rather the independence of the judiciary is enhanced?

We are in choppy waters and those who deny this might not be aware about the short or long-term fallouts from the injury inflicted on the judiciary by the action and whims of President John Mahama.

Any campaign or action which serves the best interest of the independence of the judiciary should be vigorously explored.

We have reached a stage where members of the bench are either NDC or NPP, their rulings assigned partisan colouration. Their decisions regardless how legally poignant would suffer a political twist and destroyed by wagging tongues.

Even more worrying is the fact that people have started predicting where the resetting pendulum is heading for. According to such persons, the final destination is the Electoral Commission.

Whether that is the case or not will be determined by time.

NPP’s Kwasi Kwarteng clashes with Kwame Jantuah on live TV over galamsey

A former Spokesperson of the Ministry of Education and member of the NPP communication team, Kwasi Kwarteng, has clashed with legal practitioner and political analyst, Kwame Jantuah, on live TV over the government’s approach to combating illegal mining.

Contributing to the subject of illicit mining on GHOne TV, on April 23, 2025, Kwasi Kwarteng accused Kwame Jantuah of softening his stance on the fight against galamsey under the John Mahama-led administration.

“Don’t get it wrong, but Nana [Kwame] Jantuah has never represented the interest of the CPP before. He comes and sit here and represents the NDC. When I was coming here, someone texted me that it appears that these are two NDC panelists against one. He speaks in the interest of the NDC and represents the NDC,” he alleged.

The assertion was immediately countered by Kwame Jantuah but Kwasi Kwarteng insisted that his utterances give him away as a sympathiser of the NDC, rather than the CPP.

Kwarteng questioned Jantuah’s objectivity on the subject, demanding that he equally criticise the NDC government just as he did during the tenure of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“Let’s not make it appear as if he is giving some sort of objective view. He has never been objective. Nana Jantuah here, all of a sudden, has shifted from his medical stance. Before the [2024] elections, Nana Jantuah was the one who was consistently reminding us that people were giving birth to still birth and some children were born with defects.

“Now that the NDC is in power, you are changing your stance. Galamsey is not 8 years old. Even John Mahama failed in his first term. Now President Mahama is in power. Instead of looking into the guy’s face and telling him that it’s 3 months but how you’re treating the galamsey issue hasn’t really helped, you’re changing your stance. Instead of you telling him that if you take this tangent, you’re bound to fail – so, sit up – you’re not doing that but you’re dragging Akufo-Addo into it. Akufo-Addo will not come and fix galamsey for you,” he said.

He further told Kwame Jantuah to desist from citing the former president in his discourse on illegal mining, stressing that Mahama must take full responsibility to end the menace.

“You have said on this platform that Akufo-Addo has failed. What again do you need from him? Let him be! It is President Mahama’s fight, let him fix it. Since when did we make it [galamsey] a national fight? At every point, you made it an Akufo-Addo thing – now let John Mahama fix it,” he fumed.

I Cried After My First Performance At KNUST – Gyakie

Gyakie

Songstress Gyakie has shared an emotional story about her early days as a performer, revealing that she cried after her first stage performance at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Speaking in a recent interview, the singer recalled how terrified she was when she performed during the Republic Hall SRC Week at KNUST. According to her, technical issues during the performance left her feeling embarrassed and overwhelmed.

“I was very scared during my first stage performance. I remember during the Republic Hall SRC week, I went to perform and during that, the speakers went off. I didn’t know what to do and some of the fans were hooting at me, while others tried their best to keep the atmosphere active,” she said. “Nobody asked me to leave the stage. When I got backstage, I cried because I regretted going there.”

Gyakie, who studied Business Administration at KNUST, also opened up about the pressure she faced from some lecturers and students who were aware of her music career.

“Sometimes, going to class becomes a bit uncomfortable because some lecturers know I am a singer, and they randomly ask me questions I am not ready to answer,” she revealed. “There are times I go to lectures and people would request pictures at times I don’t feel good about myself.”

Despite the challenges, Gyakie has gone on to become one of Ghana’s most celebrated young artists, with hit songs and international recognition to her name.

Attibrukusu backs govt on galamsey, seeks Chiefs’ support

0

The Paramount Chief of Lower Axim, Awulae Attibrukusu, has urged traditional leaders across the country to rally behind the government’s renewed efforts to combat illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, to safeguard Ghana’s river bodies and forest reserves for present and future generations.

Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of a meeting of the Lower Axim Traditional Council, Awulae Attibrukusu — a former Vice President of the National House of Chiefs — praised the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for his visible commitment to tackling the menace.

He stressed that chiefs must take their role in the fight against galamsey seriously to be remembered as responsible stewards of the land.

“The government is doing a lot with regard to galamsey. Just about a week or so ago, the lands minister was able to train about 453 personnel who are going to take charge and do their best to stop galamsey. They will not be going to the forests alone, but they will be going with the police and the soldiers.

“I happen to be the one who chairs the function to a successful end. Just as the government has been pressing home the galamsey menace, I want to urge Nananom help. As I always say, nobody can just get up and take a machine and go the forest to mine, because it is a big machine. So, I want nananom to take charge to and help in the fight,” he stated

As part of efforts to combat galamsey, the lands minister on April 21, ordered the revocation of the mining lease of Akonta Mining Company Ltd. following revelations of the company’s deep involvement in illegal mining activities.

According to the Minister, although Akonta Mining holds a license to operate off-reserve, the company had encroached into the Aboi and Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves in the Western North Region.

The investigations further revealed that Akonta Mining had been selling access to these reserves to illegal miners for as much as GHS 300,000 per concession. In return, some of these miners allegedly paid weekly royalties in gold—up to 250 grams—to the company.

The Minister identified key individuals involved in these illicit activities, including a company liaison named Mr. Ayisi, who facilitated the deals, and two others known as “Mr. Henry” and “Shark,” who were reportedly responsible for overseeing the on-ground destruction of the forest landscape.

We applaud Captain Traore’s efforts but he must work to restore democratic rule

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Interim President of Burkina Faso Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Interim President of Burkina Faso

The Africa Institute on Governance and Security (AIGS) has commended Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Interim President of Burkina Faso, for his efforts at addressing the country’s security and economic challenges.

However, in a statement dated April 24, 2025, and made available to GhanaWeb, the institute emphasised that sustainable stability and prosperity can only be achieved through inclusive, transparent, and democratic governance.

“We applaud Captain Traoré’s initiatives to strengthen Burkina Faso’s security apparatus through local recruitment, training, and the establishment of the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), which have aimed to restore territorial integrity in the face of relentless extremist violence,” the statement said.

AIGS has proposed several steps to support Burkina Faso’s return to democratic rule, including establishing a clear transition roadmap, strengthening independent institutions, and prioritising constitutional reform.

“The Africa Institute on Governance and Security acknowledges the complexity of Burkina Faso’s challenges, including the jihadist insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions. We believe that Captain Traoré’s leadership, with its focus on national resilience and Pan-African solidarity, can serve as a catalyst for transformative change.

“However, true stability and progress depend on transitioning from military rule to a democratic system that reflects the will of the Burkinabé people. By implementing these steps, Captain Traoré has the opportunity to cement his legacy not only as a revolutionary leader but as a statesman who guided Burkina Faso toward a prosperous, democratic future,” it added.

The institute urged Traoré to reaffirm his commitment to restoring constitutional rule and called on the international community to support the transition process.

“We call on the international community, including the African Union, United Nations, and Civil Society Organisations, to support Burkina Faso in this critical juncture by providing resources, expertise, and diplomatic engagement to facilitate a smooth and inclusive transition. The AIGS stands ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to advance governance, security, and democratic principles in Burkina Faso and across the continent,” it stressed.

The AIGS further expressed concern about the potential erosion of democratic norms due to the extension of the transitional period to 2029 and the prioritisation of security over elections.

“However, while we recognise the necessity of decisive action in times of crisis, the Africa Institute on Governance and Security firmly believes that sustainable stability and prosperity can only be achieved through inclusive, transparent, and democratic governance. Military rule, no matter how well-intentioned, is inherently fragile and risks fostering cycles of instability, as history has shown in Burkina Faso and across the Sahel. The extension of the transitional period to 2029, following national consultations in May 2024, and the decision to prioritize security over elections, while understandable given the ongoing insurgency, raise concerns about the erosion of democratic norms and the potential for prolonged junta rule.

“The AIGS respectfully urges Captain Traoré to reaffirm his commitment to restoring constitutional and democratic rule, as initially pledged, to ensure Burkina Faso’s long-term political stability, legitimacy, and international credibility,” it indicated.

The institute believes that true stability and progress depend on transitioning from military rule to a democratic system that reflects the will of the Burkinabé people.

Banks reported 716 fraud cases in 2024 – BoG report

Bank of Ghana's new headquarters Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters

The Bank of Ghana report has disclosed that in 2024, banks reported a total count of 716 fraud cases.

This indicates a 26% drop from the count of 969 cases in 2023.

According to the report, the downward trend in fraud cases can be attributed to the improvement of internal controls within the banking sector.

The report stated that fraud prevention and detection remain a key element of BoG’s effort in maintaining financial integrity, adding that it is, therefore, mandatory for all banks to report fraud cases to the BoG as and when they occur.

The data obtained from the industry showed improvement within the bank and SDI sectors.

The report also said although banks and SDIs showed a decline in the number of cases reported in 2024, as compared to 2023, the count of fraud in the Payment Service Providers (PSP) sector increased in 2024.

The data also shows a decline in the value at risk of the Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDI) sector in 2024 as compared to 2023.

Overall, the aggregate data collated from the three sub-sectors indicate that the count of fraud cases increased to 16,733 in 2024 from 15,865 in 2023, reflecting a 5% rise.

These cases correspond to a total value at risk of approximately GH¢99 million in 2024 as compared to GH¢88 million in 2023, indicating an increase of 13%.

Analysis of the 2024 data showed notable increases in forgery and manipulation of documents, and impersonation/identity theft.

The data, however, suggested significant decreases in cyber/e-mail fraud, fraudulent withdrawals and cash theft/suppression.

Zelensky cuts short South Africa visit after Russian attack on Kyiv

0

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has cancelled part of his first visit to South Africa after an overnight Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.

At least nine people were killed and more than 80 injured, including children, in the attack, local officials said.

Zelensky said in a post on X that he would return to Ukraine “immediately” after meeting his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa as part of his trip to ramp up diplomatic efforts.

He added that rescue operations were ongoing following the overnight attack and there was “significant destruction”.

“It has been 44 days since Ukraine agreed to a full ceasefire and a halt to strikes,” he continued, referring to an earlier agreement between the US and Ukraine in March over a proposed temporary ceasefire. “The strikes must be stopped immediately and unconditionally.”

Zelensky’s visit to South Africa marks a diplomatic breakthrough for the Ukrainian leader in his efforts to counter Russia’s growing influence in Africa.

The state visit would have been unimaginable just two years ago, when President Ramaphosa led a delegation of African leaders to Kyiv on a self-styled peace mission.

At the time, South Africa’s refusal to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a source of frustration for Kyiv.

But the geopolitical landscape has fundamentally changed since that meeting, and both countries now have a lot more in common.

Both find themselves increasingly at odds with Washington.

The US was one of Ukraine’s closest allies until the re-election of Donald Trump in November. Now Ukraine is keen to broaden its pool of international partners – particularly in Africa where many countries have strong links with Russia.

South Africa has also suffered from strained relations with Washington, which has expelled its ambassador and removed aid funding.

South Africa says its non-aligned position puts it in a prime position to help bring about a peace deal with Russia.

Trump on Wednesday accused the Ukrainian leader of harming peace negotiations, after Zelensky said Kyiv would not recognise Russian control of Crimea.

Ukraine has long said it will not give up Crimea, a southern peninsula illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.

Trump claimed a deal to end the war was “very close”, but that Zelensky’s refusal to accept US terms “will do nothing but prolong” the conflict.

Earlier, US Vice-President JD Vance laid out the US vision for a deal, saying it would “freeze the territorial lines close to where they are today”.

He said the deal would mean Ukraine and Russia “are both going to have to give up some of the territory they currently own” – without specifying what geographic concessions would have to be made.

When asked by reporters at the White House about whether the administration was looking to recognise Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea, Trump said he just wanted to see the war end.

Recognising Russia’s illegal occupation of Crimea would not only be politically impossible for Zelensky to accept, it would also be contrary to post-war international legal norms that borders should not be changed by force.

Burna Boy Sells Out England’s Biggest Indoor Arena in Landmark Concert

The concert was held just days after the 33-year-old made history by filling the 80,000-capacity Stade De France in Paris.

In his usual trailblazing manner, Grammy-winning superstar Burna Boy recently sold out The Co-op Manchester, England’s biggest indoor Arena.

The concert was held on 21 April, just days after the 33-year-old made history by filling the 80,000-capacity Stade De France in Paris.

Attracting over 23,500 fans, the show was bombarded with an electrifying, high-energy performance that reinforces Burna Boy’s global prominence

At his Manchester concert, Burna Boy thrilled fans with a rendition of the hit records with which he has built one of the most enviable touring repertoires for an African pop star.

The event marked Burna Boy’s sole UK arena performance of the year and formed part of his ‘I Told Them’ tour, a significant milestone in his career, named after his 2023 album, which was a major success and a turning point in his career.

The audience was treated to a masterclass in stagecraft, featuring dynamic visuals, pyrotechnics, dancers, and a carefully curated setlist that showcased highlights from his expansive discography.

Like his show in Paris, the Odogwu brought out Nigerian Gen Z sensation Shallipopi, with whom he performs the remix of his single ‘Laho’, which is quickly becoming a global viral song.

Joining him on stage was Joé Dwèt Filé to perform their collaboration ‘4KampeII’ after they both performed at the Stade De France.

Following his sold-out Manchester concert, the hitmaker will return to the stage as a headliner at the Jazz & Heritage Festival New Orleans on 24 April 2025.

Gratitude

Responding to the experience, Burna Boy expressed heartfelt appreciation to his UK fans, saying:

“Co-op Live was a movie last night! You all brought that big stadium energy and mad vibes from start to finish. My only UK arena show, and we turned it into something unforgettable”.

2025 is already off to an eventful start for the superstar, who has announced a new album titled ‘No Sign of Weakness’, which is expected to be released later in the year.

This will be his eighth LP.

Burna Boy released’ Update’ to raise the anticipation for his 2025 album, which is already a hot topic among music enthusiasts.

Burna Boy has never been one to back down. Each album has been a hit. His last album, ‘I Told Them’, has enjoyed commercial success and has become a massive part of his performance lineup.

Appointment of NDC 2024 parliamentary candidate as Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO sparks controversy

0

President Mahama’s swift appointment of Dr. Abubakar Bawah Abdulai — an NDC parliamentary candidate for 2024 — as the new CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) has stirred serious debate, especially coming just a day after the abrupt dismissal of Dr. Adam Atiku.

The shakeup follows a heated visit by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who stormed the hospital unannounced on Monday.

Mahama was fair in CJ suspension — Vanderpuye tells critics

0

The National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has mounted a strong defence of President John Dramani Mahama’s handling of the Chief Justice’s suspension, describing the process as fair and procedurally sound.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Thursday, April 24, Vanderpuye rejected accusations made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which earlier condemned the President’s decision as “unconstitutional, absurd, and repugnant.”

The NPP’s criticism followed President Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo after a prima facie case was established based on three separate petitions seeking her removal.

“If there was a real democracy capture, it was under Nana Akufo-Addo. Nana Akufo-Addo took advantage of the lacuna in the Constitution. I think people should admire President Mahama for what he has done,” Vanderpuye asserted.

He highlighted that President Mahama’s actions were not only consistent with constitutional directives but also went above and beyond in terms of fairness and transparency.

“When I heard people talking about the fact that if you are exercising discretionary power, you must be fair and just in this particular instance, President Mahama has been fair,” he said.

“The President has even gone beyond the boundaries of fairness. He has allowed the Chief Justice to see the petition before she appeared before the committee. He has allowed her to prepare herself adequately before she meets the committee,” Vanderpuye added.

President Mahama’s decision, announced on April 22, was taken in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution after consultation with the Council of State. It marks a critical juncture in Ghana’s judicial system, as the country’s highest-ranking judicial officer now faces a formal inquiry into her conduct.

Adding to the already tense atmosphere, the Office of the President confirmed on April 23 that it had received two new petitions also seeking the Chief Justice’s removal, escalating what is fast becoming a deeply divisive issue in Ghana’s legal and political landscape.

I Didn’t Lose Over Muslim Faith – Bawumia

0

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has firmly rejected claims that his religious background contributed to the NPP’s loss in the 2024 general election.

Speaking at a post-election party engagement in Accra ahead of the nationwide “Thank You Tour”, Dr. Bawumia called for unity within the NPP and insisted that internal voter apathy—not religious bias—was the decisive factor in the party’s defeat.

“Let us be clear: this was not about religion,” Dr. Bawumia stated and added, “People said we lost because our candidate was Muslim. But this doesn’t make sense and is not backed by data. Ghana is not that kind of country.”

Citing internal analysis and independent research findings, Dr. Bawumia explained that in many constituencies across the country, he outperformed Christian NPP parliamentary candidates—disproving the notion that his faith led to electoral setbacks.

Dr. Bawumia referenced examples like Rev. Ntim Fordjour’s Assin South Constituency, where he garnered more votes than the Christian MP, underscoring that religion had little to no bearing on voters’ choices.

“If voters were rejecting me for being Muslim, I would not have done better than several Christian candidates in the same constituencies,” he added. “This is just propaganda that we must reject.”

According to him, all the research institutions came to the conclusion that the NPP’s loss was not an issue of religion.

“It is not an issue of tribe. Those issues have been ruled out in all the findings from different surveys that have been done,” he stressed.

“So as a party, I’m very, very happy that, and as a country, I’m very, very happy that religion and tribe have not entered our political discourse. We should not, therefore, allow people to come in to play propaganda with religion and tribe. We are one nation. We will all go together, and we will move whether we are Muslims or Christians. We’ll all work together for the good of this country, and that is how we should try to get everybody going forward,” Dr. Bawumia intimated.

Internal Apathy to Blame

According to Dr. Bawumia, the NPP lost approximately 2.1 million votes between the 2020 and 2024 elections, largely due to party supporters failing to show up at the polls.

“John Mahama gained just about 115,000 additional votes, but our numbers dropped by over two million. That’s the story. The issue is within us, not outside us,” he stressed.

He argued that the party’s greatest challenge lies in reenergising its base and rebuilding a more inclusive structure. He urged party leaders and supporters to reflect on the recommendations of the recently submitted election review report led by Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye.

Call for Party Unity and Structural Reforms

As part of efforts to rebuild the NPP, Dr. Bawumia announced a departure from the traditional solo “Thank You Tour” undertaken by losing candidates. Instead, he extended an open invitation to his former flagbearer primary contenders to join him on a nationwide unity tour.

“This time, it’s not about me. It’s about the party. I’ve invited my fellow aspirants to join me so we can present a united front to our supporters and to the nation,” he said, adding, “It’s not about primaries anymore—it’s about building a party that can win general elections.”

Dr. Bawumia also backed changes to the party’s delegate system, proposing reforms that would broaden participation in internal elections and give more members a voice in candidate selection.

“We must make the party stronger. If we unite, we will win 2028. If we don’t, we will fall short again,” he warned.

Echoing the words of his late mentor, Dr. Bawumia concluded, “United we stand, divided we fall. Let us choose unity. Let us build the machinery that can win—not just within the party, but for the nation.”
