Ghana Maritime Authority, GPHA successfully coordinate medical evacuation at sea

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), in collaboration with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), has successfully carried out a complex medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) operation involving a crew member aboard a supertanker navigating off the coast of Ghana.

The operation, which took place on June 5, 2025, highlights Ghana’s growing capability and commitment to international maritime safety standards.

According to the GMA, the National Search and Rescue (SAR) Centre, hosted by the Authority, received the distress call at 5:13 p.m. on June 4, 2025.

The vessel, a heavily laden supertanker en route to Spain, was located more than 100 nautical miles off the Ghanaian coast.

“In line with international search and rescue protocols, the GMA immediately activated an emergency response plan with the support of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority. The Ghana Navy was also placed on standby in case their intervention became necessary,” a statement signed by Issah Issahaku, Corporate Communications Officer for GMA read.

Due to the significant distance from shore, the rescue team maintained continuous communication with the vessel and successfully guided it towards a pre-agreed rendezvous point closer to the coast.

“A GPHA rescue vessel intercepted the tanker at the designated location and successfully evacuated the affected crew member, who was subsequently transported to receive the required medical attention,” the statement mentioned.

This marks the second joint MEDEVAC operation conducted by the GMA and GPHA within a short period. In November 2024, the two agencies successfully coordinated the evacuation of two critically ill passengers from the Italian cruise liner Costa Smeralda while it was transiting Ghanaian waters en route to Namibia.

“The successful evacuation of the 82-year-old and another passenger in November was a proud moment for Ghana. It demonstrated our readiness to respond swiftly to international SAR calls,” the statement noted.

The GMA emphasised that these operations reflect Ghana’s commitment to its international maritime obligations, particularly under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), which prioritises the welfare and safety of seafarers.

Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, commended the joint efforts of the GMA and GPHA, praising their professionalism and timely response.

“These heroic efforts underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing Ghana’s search and rescue capabilities,” the sector minister stated.

“We will continue to support and strengthen collaboration among relevant ministries and agencies to ensure that Ghana’s maritime domain remains safe and responsive to emergencies,” he added.

Despite persistent challenges in national SAR capacity, both the GMA and GPHA have expressed satisfaction with the success of recent missions and reaffirmed their dedication to improving maritime safety within Ghana’s territorial waters.

“Our mission is clear; we will continue to prioritize the safety of all seafarers and provide swift responses to maritime emergencies in line with our global responsibilities,” the Authority assured.

The GMA called for continuous investment in Ghana’s SAR infrastructure and pledged to work closely with local and international partners to bolster the country’s readiness to manage emergencies at sea.

‘Insensitive, intolerant govt’ – Ntim Fordjour slams government over SWAT crackdown on picketing teachers

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour is the Member of Parliament for Assin South Reverend John Ntim Fordjour is the Member of Parliament for Assin South

The Member of Parliament for Assin South and former Deputy Minister of Education, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has criticised government over the decision to deploy Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team to disperse teachers who were picketing at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters on Monday, June 23, 2025.

In a post on his X account on June 24, 2025, Reverend Ntim Fordjour expressed his dismay at the incident, describing the government’s action as “insensitive and intolerant.”

He questioned the rationale behind using a SWAT team against teachers who were peacefully demanding their unpaid salaries, highlighting the humiliation the educators were subjected to because of the development.

“Under President Mahama, Police SWAT is called on unpaid teachers to heckle them out of Ghana Education Service HQ for simply demanding their lawful pay. What crime did they commit to face such humiliation? What happened to the dignity of teachers? Insensitive and intolerant govt,” Reverend Ntim Fordjour wrote.

The deployment of the SWAT team occurred during a protest by hundreds of trained teachers who have not received their salaries for the past 10 months.

The teachers had converged peacefully at the GES headquarters to demand urgent action from the government regarding their unpaid arrears, which they claim have made their lives unbearable.

Some of the teachers have been seen in viral videos lamenting the decision to chase them away with the police.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service has announced that concrete steps are being taken to address the concerns of the newly posted teachers, but no specific timeline for resolution has been provided.

Stop misbehaving! – Showboy slams KOKA for asking FBI to investigate Criss Waddle

0

Ghanaian musician and socialite Showboy Ghanaian musician and socialite Showboy

Ghanaian musician and socialite Showboy has criticised entertainment pundit KOKA following the latter’s recent remarks about Criss Waddle in a media interview.

In an earlier appearance on Wontumi TV, KOKA publicly called on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate the source of Criss Waddle’s wealth.

“I am looking for the FBI to commence an investigation into Criss Waddle, because his source of revenue is questionable to me,” KOKA said.

Reacting to the comments, Showboy, who is a close associate of Criss Waddle, took to social media to rebuke KOKA and cautioned him against making what he described as baseless allegations.

According to Showboy, Criss Waddle has lived and worked in the United States for several years, and the wealth he displays, including his luxury vehicles, comes from legitimate means.

“I heard you calling on the FBI to investigate Criss Waddle. KOKA, that’s foolish talk. Let me tell you something, Waddle lives in America and works in America. He has even worked with Spanish companies,” Showboy stated.

He continued, “When he made money, he returned to Ghana to invest. He even signed Medikal as an artist. Waddle is an American citizen, not just a Ghanaian. You think the FBI doesn’t work with evidence? Be reasonable. He even has a baby mama in the U.S.—so what exactly are you talking about?”

NPP Elections: Sell your candidate’s brand, not insults

Alexander kwamina Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander kwamina Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has cautioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against engaging in acts that do not foster unity within the party, but instead promote divisiveness.

According to him, as party members begin endorsing candidates who have declared their intentions to contest as flagbearer of the party, their supporters and teams should focus on promoting their candidates’ brands by highlighting their ideas to enhance their appeals.

He added that they should refrain from engaging in campaigns of insults and reputation smearing, which he believes do not help promote the country’s democracy.

“It does not help the good of democracy. What does your candidate stand for, his vision for the party and the country?

“To me, these are matters that matter, not the name-calling, because in the world of politics, there is no perfect candidate,” he is quoted as saying by Daily Graphic in an interview on June 24, 2025.

Afenyo-Markin emphasised the importance of unity within the party as they work to restructure and enhance their appeal, aiming to boost their chances in the 2028 general elections.

The politician’s caution come amid several individuals, including Members of Parliament, openly declaring their support for some of the flagbearer hopefuls and making public statements as part of their campaigns.

GTA targets renewable energy for hotels, restaurants to cut cost

Maame Efua Houadjeto is the CEO of GTA Maame Efua Houadjeto is the CEO of GTA

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, has announced plans by the Authority to secure major funding to help hotels and restaurants transition from the national electricity grid to renewable energy sources.

According to her, the move forms part of a broader initiative known as the Green Agenda, which aims to promote environmental sustainability across Ghana’s tourism value chain.

“When it comes to sustainability, it’s very important in our sector. We are promoting what we call the Green Agenda, and our primary focus is sustainability. As I speak to you, we are working to mobilise funds for our hospitality industry to gradually shift from the national grid to sustainable energy sources,” she said.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Ghana-China Business Summit 2025 on Monday, June 23, 2025, Houadjeto noted that energy costs remain a significant challenge for tourism operators, especially hotels.

She explained that reducing these energy expenses is key to making Ghana a more competitive and affordable tourist destination.

“I believe this initiative will help us reduce hotel accommodation costs. If our costs are too high, Ghana will not be seen as an attractive destination. It is, therefore, crucial that we support our hospitality industry, particularly hotels and restaurants, so we can ultimately bring down rates,” she stated.

The Green Agenda aligns with Ghana’s broader climate commitments and sustainable tourism strategy, with the goal of positioning Ghana as a leader in eco-friendly tourism in West Africa.

Mali signs trade deal with Russia as ties strengthen

0

President Vladimir Putin (L) and Col Assimi Goïta held talks in the Kremlin President Vladimir Putin (L) and Col Assimi Goïta held talks in the Kremlin

Mali and Russia have signed a series of agreements aimed at expanding mutual trade and strengthening economic ties.

Among them is a pledge for greater cooperation on nuclear energy, according to details released by the Kremlin.

The announcement of the deals came during a visit by Mali’s junta leader Col Assimi Goïta to Moscow, which included two hours of talks with President Vladimir Putin, Russian state media reports.

Goïta has boosted relations with Russia since seizing power in 2021, while reducing ties with former colonial power France. This reflects a broader regional trend, with neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger also pivoting towards Russia after the overthrow of civilian leaders.

Speaking on Monday, Putin said that while trade ties with Mali were “modest” there was an upward trend and future areas of cooperation would be in “geological exploration, energy, logistics and the humanitarian field”.

Mali and Russia have previously discussed the construction of a Russian-designed nuclear power plant as a strategic energy project for Mali.

“This official visit will contribute to further deepening our relationship in a spirit of mutual trust and respect for sovereignty,” Col Goïta said, according to a statement by the Malian presidency.

Goïta expressed gratitude for Russia’s “warm welcome” and affirmed Mali’s willingness to strengthen the cooperation, which he said “covers many sectors”.

Military cooperation remains a key element of the Russia-Mali alliance.

Russian mercenary forces have supported Col Goïta’s government since French and UN troops were expelled after years of counterinsurgency operations.

The Wagner Group recently withdrew from the country, but another force, the Africa Corps, remains.

When the army seized power in Mali, it cited the need to contain a deteriorating security situation as a major reason for the coup.

However, violence has worsened in recent years despite promises to deal with the conflict.

Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, who held separate talks with his Malian counterpart Sadio Camara, said the priority of the Russia-Mali partnership was “to achieve practical results in enhancing security and sovereignty”.

“This approach is the key to any success and victory,” the AFP news agency quoted him as saying.

Lil Win Storms Market With Military Men in Ibrahim Traoré Movie, Receives Rousing Welcome

0

Popular Kumawood actor and producer Lil Win has once again sparked excitement in Ghana’s film circles after sharing an electrifying scene from his upcoming movie Captain Ibrahim Traoré: The Last African Hero. The film, inspired by the revolutionary Burkinabé leader, Ibrahim Traoré, is already generating buzz on social media for its ambitious portrayal and cinematic intensity.

In a recent behind-the-scenes video shared on TikTok and other platforms, Lil Win is seen riding through a bustling market in a military truck, flanked by men in camouflage uniforms resembling Burkina Faso’s army. The dramatic entrance caught the attention of many, not only for its authenticity but also for the enthusiastic response from onlookers in the market.

Market women and passersby could be heard cheering and waving as Lil Win, dressed in military regalia, responded with composed gestures, channeling the commanding presence of the real-life Captain Traoré. The spontaneous ovation highlighted the public’s deep admiration for both the actor and the subject of the film.

The actor, whose real name is Kwadwo Nkansah, is known for blending humor with powerful storytelling. This time, however, he appears to be taking a more serious and Pan-Africanist tone in portraying the young Burkinabé leader, who has gained prominence across the continent for his anti-colonial rhetoric and revolutionary leadership.

Speaking about the project in a caption, Lil Win said, “We are telling the story of African bravery, of young leaders who rise with purpose. Captain Traoré is not just a man; he is a symbol of a

Party structure is key, not ego-driven endorsements – Afadjato South MP

0

Member of Parliament for Afadjato South, Frank Afriyie, has challenged the political viability of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopefuls outside the support of party structures, arguing that none of the aspirants, regardless of their popularity, can secure more than 5% of national votes running independently.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, June 24, the MP criticised the notion that any single figure within the NPP could claim overwhelming electoral strength without the party’s machinery backing them.

“It is not for nothing that candidates who stand in the name of the NDC or NPP always perform very well in general elections. It is because of the machinery that they represent and the party structures,” he stressed.

Afriyie’s remarks come amid a growing wave of endorsements within the NPP, particularly the recent declaration of support by a coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in favour of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

But Afriyie pushed back, arguing that such endorsements inflate personal egos while ignoring the critical need to rebuild trust and support at the party’s base.

“If Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong or any of the aspirants believe they are that formidable, they should try going as independent candidates; they won’t cross 5%,” he challenged.

“Any right-thinking party officer should be more interested in fixing the party from the base, not engaging in premature public endorsements,” he added.

On Monday, June 23, a coalition of 220 former MMDCEs, who served between 2017 and 2024 under the NPP administration, held a press conference at the Alisa Hotel to publicly declare their support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

The group claimed that after extensive consultation and analysis, Bawumia emerged as the most capable and visionary candidate. They pledged to offer their full support, political, financial, and strategic, to ensure his victory in the upcoming internal primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Praye Honeho Blames Kiki Banson For Group Decline

0

Praye Honeho

Praye Honeho, also known as Choirmaster and a member of the once-popular music group Praye, has blamed artiste manager, Kiki Banson, for the group’s alleged downfall.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM, Praye Honeho said, “I think it was Kiki who destroyed Praye. He didn’t do anything meaningful to help the group.”

According to him, Praye was already successful before working with Kiki Banson, with hit songs like Angelina and others. The group believed Kiki would take them even further.

“We had high hopes. We trusted him, but it was a total disappointment,” Honeho said. “He didn’t work hard enough. If we were already loud and then we started to fade after meeting you, then what does that say?”

Praye Honeho expressed regret, adding that Kiki had a strong reputation and people believed in his abilities—including the group—but he failed to meet expectations.

Kiki Banson is known in the music industry for managing Afropop star Becca, and many credit him for her early success. However, Praye Honeho’s comments suggest that not all his management efforts had the same results.

Kiki Banson is yet to respond to the claims.

0

William Burckson

FOUNDER AND Chief Learning Strategist for Temple Advisory, Robert Beninn has called on individuals to renew their mindset on how they perceive entrepreneurship.

Speaking at the Enterprise and Employment Fair 2025 organized by Kingdom Expression Ministries Worldwide under the theme, “Rising Above: Building Resilience in Business and Career Development, “Mr. Beninn stated, “We’re all entrepreneurs, and for us to succeed, we need to begin to work each of us in our fields as entrepreneurs, not thinking of ourselves as people who are building careers, but as people who are bringing value to the workplace.”

Mr. Beninn emphasised that individuals have the power to redeem themselves and build their nation, urging them to think of their work as enterprises, creating value and generating rewards.

“We can’t wait for anybody to come redeem us; we can. We only have to change our mindset, build our entrepreneurial skills and abilities, and we can do this. If each one of us thinks of our society, the resources we have, the endowments that we have given by God, we can do a lot and redeem ourselves.”

President of Kingdom Expression Ministries Worldwide, William Burckson, speaking of the essence of the event stated that the church aims to raise men and women who will positively impact society by offering solutions, products, and services that uplift their communities.

He said the church’s approach to ministry involves training and developing individuals to serve society effectively. “To support this, specific platforms like the Enterprise and Employment Fair are organised with focuses on equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to overcome obstacles.”

Fintech unlocks business growth – SMEs told

The President of the Ghana Fintech and Payments Association, Martin Kwame Awagah, has encouraged businesses to embrace financial technology solutions, emphasising their transformative impact on how people live, transact, and access financial services.

Speaking during Week 4 of the #CitiBusinessFestival 2025 On-Air Series on the topic “How Fintech Is Changing the Business Landscape,” Awagah noted that fintech has evolved from a trendy term to a powerful driver of economic growth, financial inclusion, and business development, particularly in emerging markets like Ghana.

“Today, in Ghana and across Africa, we have a thriving youthful population,” he said.

“This demographic represents a significant portion of our society and is very tech-savvy. They’re not interested in long, traditional processes, like going to the bank. They want convenience, speed, and access at their fingertips. And that’s exactly what fintech delivers.”

NDC endorsing Mahama for third-term due to lack of trust in Asiedu Nketiah, Julius Debrah – Wadie alleges

0

Former National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Michael Omari Wadie Former National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Michael Omari Wadie

Former National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Michael Omari Wadie, has claimed that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is allegedly pushing for a third term bid by President John Dramani Mahama due to a lack of confidence in other potential leaders within the party.

According to him, the NDC’s recent internal conversations and public discourse around Mahama possibly returning for another term reveal a deeper issue of the party’s inability to identify a strong successor.

Speaking on Asaasepa radio on June 19, 2025, Omari Wadie said, “Even today, the NDC doesn’t have the men. Haven’t you heard that President Mahama will go for a third term? They cannot even identify among themselves who is qualified and capable of doing the work. They don’t have the men, so they are considering Mahama going for a third term.”

He argued that if the NDC had confidence in individuals like Asiedu Nketiah or Julius Debrah, there would be no need to revisit Mahama’s eligibility or leadership.

“If they believed in Asiedu Nketiah or Julius Debrah, would they still be considering Mahama? Certainly not,” he added.

Omari Wadie emphasised that such a scenario would be impossible in the New Patriotic Party, asserting that the NPP has a robust pipeline of competent leaders capable of taking over at any time.

“This cannot happen in the NPP. We have capable people who can lead the country. If a leader in the NPP tried to overstay his welcome, we would send him to court,” he stressed.

FBI Pressured To Investigate Adwoa Tee Over Controversial Scammer Comment

0

Adwoa Tee

GHANAIAN INFLUENCER, Adwoa Tee, is facing calls for an investigation by the  Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) following her controversial comments about dating scammers. During a recent episode of the revamped podcast Rants, Bants, and Confessions, which featured Efia Odo and Cookie XX, Adwoa Tee boldly stated her preference for scammers over traditional 9-to-5 professionals.

“Before I started this influencing thing, I was doing 9-to-5, okay? I was working at GSE,” Adwoa Tee shared.

She went on to explain her frustrations with the typical office worker’s schedule, saying, “Sometimes the way the guys even act in the office… they’ll leave at 9:00 p.m. or 10:00 p.m., and by the time he gets home, he’s tired. That’s overtime.” Adwoa Tee elaborated on her preference, stating, “When he’s at work, you can’t text him. Even when you do, it takes him a long time to reply. But for me, I like somebody who spends time with me, who has time for me, who gives me so much attention. But just someone like this, I wouldn’t even mind dating a scammer—because he’s always home.”

The confession has raised questions about the implications of Adwoa Tee’s comments and whether they could lead to further scrutiny from authorities.

Her remarks have sparked outrage on social media, especially in light of recent actions taken by the FBI against alleged scammers. Users on X (formerly Twitter) are now calling for the agency to investigate Adwoa Tee. One user, Chelsea4ever, tweeted, “Adjoa Tee may help the F……B….I in  looking for the so-called fraud boys since she said she likes fraud boys; make her show them some.”

Another user, Kalyjay Jnr, added, “Adjoa Tee (@adjoatasha) said she dates and likes fraud boys, meaning she knows many of them. She can assist. Make FBI (@FBI) do it fast.”

NPP Flagbearer Race: Bawumia, Ken Clash Over Leadership

0

Flashback: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Ken Agyapong in a handshake

The race for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 flagbearership is heating up as two leading contenders, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, have publicly exchanged jabs over what makes a capable leader.

In a recent engagement with former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Dr. Bawumia made a strong case for his candidacy, arguing that material wealth should not be the deciding factor in leadership selection.

“I may not be rich. But I have rich ideas. Poor people can also be Presidents of Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia reportedly told the gathering, positioning himself as a leader driven by vision and innovation rather than personal fortune.

However, Kennedy Agyapong, known for his outspoken nature and considerable business success, swiftly responded with a pointed counter on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

“In this world, some have rich ideas and nothing to show for it. Others turn ideas into results and wealth. Ghana needs more doers, not dreamers in suits giving speeches,” he posted, in what many observers view as a direct rebuttal to Dr. Bawumia’s remarks.

Former MMDCEs Endorse Bawumia

The contest escalated further when a forum of 220 former MMDCEs who served between 2017 and 2024 under the previous NPP administration declared their full support for Dr. Bawumia to lead the party into the 2028 presidential election.

At a press conference in Accra, Ebenezer Doku, former MCE for Adentan and spokesperson for the group, announced the endorsement, describing Dr. Bawumia as the NPP’s strongest candidate heading into the next election. The endorsement comes ahead of the party’s highly anticipated flagbearer election in January 2026.

Mr. Doku explained that following broad consultations with potential aspirants and a careful review of their competencies, vision, and loyalty to the party, the group was convinced that Dr. Bawumia is the most qualified and winnable candidate.

“Dr. Bawumia’s track record in public service, his unifying leadership, and his broad electoral appeal position him as the right candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections,” Mr. Doku said.

He stressed that the endorsement is not merely symbolic but reflects a deep, grassroots-backed commitment to securing victory for Dr. Bawumia. According to him, 95% of the former MMDCEs in the forum have previously served as constituency and regional executives and understand the NPP’s internal electoral dynamics.

The group praised Dr. Bawumia’s achievements in driving Ghana’s digital transformation, including the mobile money interoperability platform, the paperless ports system, and the successful rollout of the Ghana Card.

“These policies have significantly improved Ghana’s economy and public service delivery,” Mr. Doku noted, adding that Dr. Bawumia’s inclusive leadership style and appeal across demographics make him a formidable electoral asset.

The group pledged to activate its extensive political networks across all 16 regions, promising grassroots mobilisation, door-to-door campaigns, education to counter misinformation, and resource mobilisation to support Dr. Bawumia’s campaign.

Ken’s Team Unmoved

In a swift reaction, Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign, downplayed the significance of the endorsement by the former MMDCEs. Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, June 23, Mr. Kwarteng said such endorsements were not new and often had limited impact on election outcomes.

“It is good for them (the Bawumia camp), we wish them well if indeed they believe they have over 200 MMDCEs. I’m sure the election day will vindicate that position,” he stated.

Mr. Kwarteng criticised what he described as “a deliberate tactic to stage endorsements and create a false sense of widespread support”. He argued that a similar strategy was employed in previous contests to influence polling station executives, but it failed to deliver the expected results.

“Our focus is to engage over 200,000 polling station executives. We are confident that they will make a decision to elect a candidate who is marketable, winnable, and can unite the party,” he said.

Mr. Kwarteng emphasised that the grassroots, not staged endorsements, would determine the outcome of the flagbearership race.

“I know this time around, they [delegates] will not elect a candidate who is not marketable or cannot unite the party. If they [the Bawumia camp] want to lie to themselves that they have been endorsed by these MMDCEs, they can,” he added.

Contest of Ideologies

The subtle but sharp exchange has intensified the ongoing debate within the NPP about the kind of leadership the party and the country need heading into the 2028 general election.

Dr. Bawumia has consistently positioned himself as the architect of the country’s digital transformation, emphasising ideas and data-driven governance.

On the other hand, Kennedy Agyapong has built his campaign around practical success, wealth creation, and his reputation as a results-oriented businessman who delivers on promises.

Shaping Flagbearer Debate

The back-and-forth between the two frontrunners and supporters is expected to sharpen the focus of the NPP’s internal campaign as the January 2026 flagbearer election approaches.

Supporters of both camps have already taken to social media to defend their preferred candidates, signaling that the competition could become even more intense in the coming months.

‘Most prepared president’ remark won’t stop us from collecting our money – Gyampo replies Gabby?

0

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has cautioned President John Dramani Mahama not to be swayed by recent praises from individuals who previously criticised him.

According to Professor Gyampo, some of Mahama’s fiercest critics have now turned around to heap praises on him, a gesture he believes should not distract the President or derail the efforts of the anti-corruption task force, Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).

Speaking on a panel discussion on TV3 on June 21, 2025, Professor Gyampo emphasised that regardless of the public accolades, ORAL must stay committed to its mandate of retrieving illegally acquired assets.

“All of a sudden, President Mahama is being showered with accolades from people who had once severely criticised him. Now he is being told that he is the most prepared president in Ghana. Some are saying that Ato Forson is the smartest Minister of Finance we have ever had. Some people are saying all manner of things.

“But I want to say that look, whether Mahama’s accolades are touted or not the reports of ORAL will be implemented, and nobody will be made to live in a fool’s paradise.

“If something is good, but the point is that we tell President Mahama that regardless of whatever people say about him, that he is doing well, that he is the most prepared president.

“Now people have started taking to a certain posture and it is curious, and I am surprised but we are saying that look, we will collect our money.

“Wherever monies have been kept, we will collect our money. Even if you praise him or you don’t praise him, the right thing would be done and it’s important that we put this on record and we let President Mahama know that he should not be swayed.

“Attorney General, all of you don’t be swayed by all this thing, let us go and get to the bottom of every matter that is being investigated regardless of whoever that is involved.”

Professor Gyampo’s comments follow remarks made by New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, who recently described President John Mahama as the most prepared leader in Ghana’s political history.

Speaking on Asaase Radio on June 16, 2025, Otchere-Darko highlighted Mahama’s unique career trajectory, which spans from serving as an assemblyman to becoming Vice President, President, and now again a presidential candidate.

“I think the current president is probably the most prepared president we have had. From assemblyman all the way to where he is now, Vice President, President, you have been in opposition, seen who your real friends are, learned from your mistakes, identified missed opportunities, and now you’ve been given another chance,” Otchere-Darko stated.

However, he also issued a word of caution, noting that Mahama faces immense pressure to fulfill campaign promises, particularly those directed at Ghana’s youth.

“The youth are unforgiving. They want jobs. They voted for you because they expect their aspirations to be met through your 24-hour economy policy and other promises. Satisfying them in this era of social and new media where every government action is magnified is a huge challenge,” he noted.

GMet workers demand immediate implementation of conditions of service

0

Workers of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) have expressed deep dissatisfaction over what they describe as an unjustified delay in the implementation of their agreed conditions of service, years after a deal was reached with management.

According to the workers, despite enduring challenging and sometimes dangerous working conditions, management has failed to honour commitments made to improve their welfare.

Divisional Chairman of the Public Services Workers’ Union, Pastin Ahenkan Egyiri, speaking on behalf of the aggrieved staff, vowed to take all necessary steps to ensure the full enforcement of the agreement.

“Our members work in very tough environments—some get caught in rainstorms while on duty, and others even risk snake bites in remote areas. Despite all this, we remain committed to providing accurate meteorological services to the public,” he said.

“But just two months ago, we observed that management was not forthcoming with any updates, and we cannot sit aloof and allow this to continue.”

The frustrations of the GMet workers echo wider unrest across the public sector.

Recently, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) embarked on a nationwide strike over similar concerns about unfulfilled conditions of service.

Although that strike has been suspended and nurses have returned to work, the disruption significantly impacted healthcare delivery and sparked national concern over the government’s commitment to public sector welfare.

Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Ayariga, has called on African countries to draw inspiration from Ghana’s thriving youth innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Mr. Osman Ayariga made the appeal during a panel discussion on Youth Innovation in Future Energy Technologies at the Youth Energy Summit (YES!) held in Cape Town, South Africa. The summit, which runs alongside the prestigious Africa Energy Forum, is dedicated to empowering young professionals, graduates, and entrepreneurs within the energy sector.

In a Facebook post reflecting on his participation, the NYA CEO stated, “Ghana has created the enabling environment for youth innovators and entrepreneurs to thrive. The rest of the continent should emulate the success story of Ghana!”

The Youth Energy Summit (YES!), held under the theme “Tomorrow’s World”, brings together dynamic youth leaders, energy experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to explore sustainable and youth-driven solutions for Africa’s energy future. The event is part of a larger vision to electrify the continent by engaging 10% of Africa’s one billion people in the energy conversation.

The summit also seeks to build a network of 100 million people by 2035—fostering job creation, grassroots involvement, and cross-border knowledge exchange within Africa’s vast and largely untapped energy sector.

Mr. Osman Ayariga’s remarks position Ghana as a continental trailblazer in supporting youth-led innovation, particularly in the face of the continent’s critical energy needs and ongoing transition to renewable and sustainable power sources.

His presence at the summit reinforces Ghana’s commitment to developing homegrown talent and nurturing the next generation of African energy leaders.

Jack Alolome explains why he ditched NPP for NDC, expectations of Mahama’s gov’t

0

Gospel musician Jack Alolome has questioned the notion that gospel singers should not openly endorse political parties or figures.

“Why do people say that?” he asked during an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM.

He challenged the opinion that declaring support for a political party could polarise his following or lead others astray.

“If anyone misses the way to heaven because of that, they chose and decided to backslide themselves,” he said.

Alolome offered an alternative perspective on gospel acts supporting political parties.

“Perhaps, we are using our influence to help save the country when it is derailed,” he suggested.

Parting ways with the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The singer acknowledged that he once supported the NPP, being the child of diehard NPP supporters.

“But in 2016 – Sam Pyne, Dr. Serebour, Lawyer Ohene Gyan, Kokofu, Nana B, Taabea, Kwame Adinkra – these were my friends, and the majority, or about 90%, were NPP supporters. Taabea was a staunch supporter, but he wasn’t treated fairly. We used to meet every Sunday at Yegoala [Hotel] in Kumasi,” he recalled.

He added, “If you remember, there was an NPP programme at the Kumasi Sports Stadium, for which Sam Pyne asked me to perform. I had to stop my own programme at Breman Asikuma. We came and gave a great performance, I was introduced by Lord Inusah. I even created a song on the spot for the party. But after all that, whoever I called for payment referred me to someone else. We were never paid.”

He lamented working without compensation, even though he had dropped everything to honour the invitation to perform.

He emphasised that he and his team deserve to be paid and that expecting compensation was neither greedy nor dishonourable.

Joining the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

Following his disappointment with the NPP, Jack Alolome said shared the story of how he drifted to the NDC.

“I was called by Honourable Armah Kofi Buah, you know he’s a brother; we come from the same town. He informed me he was launching his campaign – that was in 2016 – and he wanted me to support him.”

“On the day, the DJ struggled to play my song, so I had to perform a cappella. I did that for about five minutes on stage. Later, when I returned to my hotel, they came to thank me for gracing the occasion. When I checked the money they had left for me, it was GHS20,000 – back in 2016. I placed it on my bed, took a picture, and sent it to my family, telling them this party was better and that we should be with them instead.”

Alolome clarified that his support for the NDC was not about personal gain but was inspired by the party’s appreciation and respectful treatment — in contrast to how he had been treated by the NPP.

“The [NPP] party came to power and performed the worst,” he said, criticising former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration and defending his support for John Mahama and the NDC.

He said he appreciated the NDC’s warm reception despite his past allegiance to the NPP and described it as a privilege and “divine grace” to sing before President Mahama took the stage.

Alolome said that during Akufo-Addo’s eight-year tenure, he came to realise that the ousted Mahama was the better leader, which inspired his song Begye Yen (“Come Save Us”).

He recalled how Eric Adjei told him that he and his boss, then National NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi, had recognised “there was power in the song” when they first heard it.

“They told me they loved the song. And truly, it made an impact,” Alolome added.

In a statement issued on June 23, 2025, the police said that they had arrested five suspects through intelligence linked to the syndicate.

The police indicated that four of the five suspects were Nigerian, with the remaining one being a Ghanaian.

“Over recent months, the police received multiple reports of victims being trailed from financial institutions and having large sums of money stolen from their vehicles while parked. The syndicate, often using Toyota Highlander vehicles with fake registration plates, identified and followed targets before striking.

Haruna Mohammed calls for amendment of political parties act to enable financial independence

0

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has called for urgent reforms to Ghana’s Political Parties Act, urging that political parties be legally empowered to own and operate businesses to achieve true financial autonomy.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on June 24, Mr Mohammed underscored the critical need to overhaul the outdated political financing framework that currently restricts parties’ funding options.

He stressed that the existing laws no longer reflect today’s political realities and must be amended.

“The laws governing our political environment have been outdated. What we need to do is to amend the Political Parties Act to allow political parties to do business,” he asserted.

Highlighting the benefits of such a reform, Mr Mohammed explained that allowing parties to engage in lawful business activities would provide sustainable revenue streams vital for their survival and effective functioning.

“When political parties are allowed to do business and own businesses, they will be able to earn certain kinds of money that can shore up their balance sheets and support political activity,” he explained.

He warned against the perpetual reliance on government funding and external donations, which continue to hamper the financial independence of political parties.

“We can’t continue going around in circles looking for ways in which the government should provide funding. We have had this debate several times, and I think it is time we re-examine the Political Parties Act,” he urged.

Mr Mohammed called for immediate legislative action to grant political parties the authority to conduct lawful commercial ventures, ensuring their financial sustainability and strengthening Ghana’s democracy.

“The amendment will give power and authority to political parties to do lawful businesses that can support the running of political parties in Ghana,” he said.

GJA Elections Committee assures members of transparent, credible electoral process

0

Accra, June 23, GNA – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Elections Committee Monday said it will stay neutral and work in the interest of members in the Association’s upcoming national elections.

A statement signed by Mr Peter Martey Agbeko, the Elections Committe Chair, said the team would continue to engage stakeholders to help maintain the dignity and credibility of the electoral process.

Responding to concerns raised by General Secretary aspirant, Mr Akwasi Agyemang, over proxy voting modalities, the Committee explained that proxy voting, in the 2025 elections, was “grounded in widely recognised electoral best practices. ”

“The decision to introduce proxy voting was not taken lightly…Proxy voting provides a legitimate option for eligible voters who, due to verified reasons, are unable to be physically present to cast their ballots,” it noted.

The statement said proxy voting was not implemented in previous elections due to lack of appropriate infrastructure, including standardised forms and a secure digital platform.

“The tumultuous circumstances at the time, including the unexpected resignation of the then Committee Chair, also made it difficult to implement progressive reforms,” it said.

“In contrast, for this election cycle, we have taken deliberate steps to ensure proper structures and safeguards are in place. A secure digital platform has been set up, and vetted proxy application forms are being used.”

Adequate safeguards had been implemented to prevent abuse of the proxy system, as applications ended June 23, 2025, the statement said.

“Each application will be scrutinised and approved on a case-by-case basis, based on submitted evidence of the applicant’s inability to vote in person.”

The Elections Committee recently issued guidelines and other regulations governing the proxy system.

In line with consultation and transparency, the Committee has scheduled June 24, 2025, for a virtual meeting to clarify and address other election-related concerns. On bloated voters register allegations, the Committee Chair called for concrete evidence to support the assertion.

“As it stands, making a general claim without particulars makes it difficult for the Committee to investigate or take corrective action. We are open to scrutiny and ready to investigate any verifiable discrepancies presented to us.”

Twelve national candidates and 50 regional candidates have been approved by the Elections Committee for the polls, scheduled for June 30, 2025.

‘No Ghanaian asks a doctor’s religion at the hospital’ – Kofi Tonto ‘fires’ Stephen Amoah

0

An aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has criticised the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr Stephen Amoah, for supposedly injecting religion into Ghana’s political discourse.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Kofi Tonto expressed deep concern over recent comments made by Dr Amoah, a known ally of Kennedy Agyapong, who suggested that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) poor performance in the 2024 elections was partly due to Dr Bawumia’s Islamic background.

Tonto condemned the remarks as divisive and irresponsible, warning against the dangers of religious politics in Ghana’s democracy.

“No Ghanaian goes to the hospital and asks for the religious background of the doctor before treatment,” he said. “What matters is competence, and the same standard should apply to our leaders.”

He further emphasised that Dr Amoah, as a legislator, should know better and act in a manner that promotes national unity rather than religious division.

“Religious identity should never be a disqualifying factor in politics. It’s dangerous and unnecessary to bring faith into the debate about who should lead this country,” Tonto added.

Tonto argued that track record and competence, not faith, should be the focus of political discourse.

Hearts of Oak reappoint Aboubakar Ouattara for a new role

0

Accra Hearts of Oak have officially reassigned former head coach Aboubakar Ouattara to a new role as Special Advisor to the Board.

The experienced Ivorian tactician, who previously served as coach of the club, will now work directly with the Board of Directors, providing strategic counsel and handling special assignments as part of Hearts of Oak’s broader technical and structural revamp.

Ouattara’s reassignment is seen as a move to retain his football expertise within the club’s hierarchy, even as a new technical team led by Didi Dramani takes charge of first-team responsibilities. The club believes his experience, especially at the continental level, will be vital in shaping long-term planning and decision-making.

This restructuring comes at a time when Hearts of Oak are intensifying efforts to rebuild and return to their competitive best after a challenging 2024/25 season. Ouattara’s advisory role is expected to contribute to both the technical direction and governance side of the club.

NPP’s Flagbearer-First Approach Threatens Internal Unity– Dr. Asekere

0

As the New Patriotic Party () prepares for its next internal contest to choose a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, political analyst Dr. George Asekere has raised critical concerns over the party’s sequencing of events leading up to the 2026 presidential primaries.

According to Dr. Asekere, although the NPP flagbearer selection is being described by some as an “early congress,” the party is, in fact, adhering to its own laws.

Fix the cracks first – Patrick Boamah advises NPP ahead of flagbearer race

0

The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to pause plans for selecting a flagbearer until it has addressed the deep-rooted issues affecting the party.

According to him, efforts should be focused on internal reform and restoring credibility before considering who should lead the party into the next general election.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, June 23, Mr Boamah criticised the current rush toward flagbearer campaigns, describing it as misguided in light of the NPP’s poor performance in the 2024 polls.

He argued that the party needed a serious reset to reconnect with the Ghanaian people. “I have stated on various platforms that I am against this approach of selecting a flagbearer when we haven’t fixed the party,” he said.

“We need to fix the party to make the party attractive again to be able to win a general election.”

The MP stressed that rebuilding trust with the electorate and reorganising internal structures should come before leadership contests.

He questioned the foundation upon which potential flagbearers were basing their aspirations.

“That is why I said we need a very organised and disciplined party to elect a president, not a flagbearer, because those declaring to be flagbearers and what have you—what are we standing on?” he asked.

Boamah attributed the party’s electoral defeat in 2024 to a growing disconnect between its leadership and the citizenry.

He urged his colleagues to reflect critically on this gap instead of pushing ahead with political campaigns.

“What some of my people forget is that what led to our abysmal performance was the lack of public trust in our party,” he noted.

He concluded with a pointed warning: “We need to build that public trust and confidence again, because it cannot be that you go into an election and produce this result and all you are interested in is electing a flagbearer. Nobody does that.”

GJA election will be credible and fair – Committee Chair assures

0

The Chairman of the Elections Committee of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Peter Martey Agbeko, has reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring a credible and transparent electoral process ahead of the upcoming national and regional elections.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 24, Mr. Agbeko said the committee, in collaboration with a technical advisor from the Electoral Commission of Ghana, is working diligently to guarantee a smooth and fair election. He assured stakeholders that the process would uphold the core values of democracy.

“Together with my hardworking committee members and under the technical guidance of our advisor from the Electoral Commission of Ghana, we remain committed to organising, conducting, and supervising a credible, transparent, and fair election in line with best practices,” he stated.

Mr. Agbeko also raised concerns over what he described as attempts by some individuals to discredit the process. He noted that while constructive feedback is welcome, baseless allegations undermine the integrity of the elections.

“It is unfortunate when people project their standards onto others and seek to create doubt without presenting verifiable facts. Credible concerns are welcome and will be addressed on their merit,” he emphasised.

Addressing controversy around proxy voting, he explained that it remains a valid part of modern electoral systems and assured that necessary safeguards are in place to prevent abuse.

“Despite the sudden challenge, we conducted the election successfully. I say this to underscore our resilience and dedication to duty,” he recalled.

As tension builds ahead of the polls, Mr. Agbeko made it clear he would remain in his role and oversee the process to the end. “This Chairman is not going anywhere. I intend to see this process through faithfully, professionally, and to the glory of God and the service of our Association.”

He added that a stakeholder engagement would take place later in the evening, involving all candidates, the Elections Committee, and the Electoral Commission’s Technical Advisor. The meeting aims to promote transparency and foster unity as the GJA moves into the final stages of its electoral process.

The GJA elections are scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025.
