BBNAija?s Tacha knocks clergyman, Paul Adefarasin for saying content creator was ?aggressive ? while filming his vehicle (video)

BBNaija’s Tacha has knocked clergyman, Paul Adefarasin, for describing the content creator who made the controversial video of him while driving on the streets of Lagos, as ‘’aggressive”.

Adefarasin during service today, addressed the controversial video of him that has sparked outrage online, which showed him wading off a content creator filming his car. In the video, the clergyman wound down, spoke to the content creator and then drove off. Some Nigerians claim that he had a pistol on his right hand.

During service today, Adefarasin denied brandishing a firearm. He stated that he doesn’t have any license to a firearm and that he never brandished any of such at the content creator who he described as ‘’aggressive’ and was  coming into his personal space.

Reacting to his comments, Tacha described it as ‘’gaslighting’. She argued that what many Nigerian clergymen do here in Nigeria, they can never try same outside the shores of this country.

She also argued that if it was Seyi Tinubu or Nyesom Wike’s son that was involved in this controversy, a section of Nigeria’s X space would have been on fire.

Rwanda pulls out of regional bloc over DR Congo row

0

Rwanda says it is pulling out of a central African regional bloc after a diplomatic row over its involvement in the conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The country was supposed to take up the chairman role of the Economic Community of Central African States (Eccas), which rotates between its 11 members.

But it was prevented from doing so at a meeting on Saturday in Equatorial Guinea.

Announcing its decision to leave Eccas, Rwanda said its right to take up the “chairmanship… was deliberately ignored in order to impose the DRC’s diktat”.

As a result, it saw “no justification for remaining in an organisation whose current functioning runs counter to its founding principles and intended purpose”.

The row comes as efforts to end the fighting in eastern DR Congo continue. Following US mediation, Rwanda and DR Congo are working on a draft peace plan that is expected to be signed later this month.

According to a statement from the Congolese presidency, the Eccas leaders at the summit “acknowledged the aggression against the Democratic Republic of Congo by Rwanda and ordered the aggressor country to withdraw its troops from Congolese soil”.

It added that until the dispute was resolved, it was decided that Equatorial Guinea would remain in the chairman role “to the detriment of Rwanda”.

In comments directed at Rwanda, Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muyaya said that “one cannot continually and voluntarily violate the principles that underpin our regional institutions and claim to want to preside over them”.

He added that the Eccas decision “should inspire other regional organisations to adopt a firmer stance against Rwanda”.

Rwanda has been accused of supporting M23 rebels in the east of the DR Congo. The group has made major advances at the beginning of the year, taking the key regional cities of Goma and Bukavu.

DR Congo’s government, the US and France have identified Rwanda as backing the M23.

Last year, a UN expert’s report said that up to 4,000 Rwandan troops were fighting alongside the rebels.

But Rwanda has denied the accusations, saying instead that its troops were deployed along its border to prevent the conflict spilling over into its territory.

Rwanda has once before, in 2007, left Eccas, whose mission is to foster co-operation and strengthen regional integration in central Africa. It rejoined several years later.

KMA endorses Zoomlion’s self-loading tricycles for waste management

0

The Environment Sub-Committee of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has expressed confidence in a new fleet of self-loading tricycles, skip compactor trucks, and skip containers being rolled-out by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, describing them as a potential breakthrough in addressing Kumasi’s long-standing waste management problems.

Following a field inspection of Zoomlion’s logistics operations, the Committee Chairman, Abraham Boadi, stated that the new equipment, especially the skip tricycles, could significantly improve refuse collection across the metropolis, particularly in congested and difficult-to-access areas.

“We plan to engage with the General Assembly to ensure this initiative is properly implemented,” he told journalists. “With five sub-metros in the Ashanti Region, allocating this equipment across each of them would be highly beneficial.”

The visit, which involved 14 members of the Sub-Committee, covered three critical locations where Zoomlion assembles waste logistics: JSA Logistics Warehouse in Tema, JA Plant Pool, and the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP) at Adjen Kotoku in Accra.

The Metro Environmental Health Officer and Sub-Committee Secretary, Kwaku Poku, said the team was impressed by the scope of the operation and the potential for impact in Kumasi.

“What we’ve seen here today is truly encouraging,” he said. “Visiting and seeing the equipment firsthand has opened our eyes to the potential impact this initiative can have on waste management in the Kumasi Metropolis.”

According to Mr Poku, the self-loading tricycles are particularly suited to market areas and other crowded public spaces where conventional waste trucks cannot operate efficiently. He said the logistics could make a “significant contribution” to resolving the metropolis’s waste crisis.

Senior Public Health Engineer at the KMA Waste Management Department, Wiafe Akenten Oduro, also praised Zoomlion’s efforts, citing the company’s sustained investment in waste logistics and its role in job creation.

LatexFoamPromo

“Without their various innovations and initiatives, many people might still be without jobs,” he said. “Their efforts to improve our national waste management system are truly commendable, and we fully support them in this cause.”

Mr Oduro called on residents to take greater responsibility for cleanliness in their communities, stressing that “waste management is a shared responsibility, and we all have a role to play in keeping our surroundings clean.”

The KMA is expected to present its recommendations to the General Assembly for adoption and rollout of the equipment across Kumasi’s five sub-metropolitan areas. The move forms part of broader efforts to address the city’s chronic sanitation problems and improve public health.

NPP doesn’t give chance to non-performing candidates – Kennedy Agyapong

0

Former Member of Parliament and former NPP presidential aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not reward poor performance with second chances, especially when it comes to choosing a flagbearer for national elections.

He made this assertion while addressing some party faithful at Mampong in the Ashanti Region during his visit to the area to mourn the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu.

The gathering, which drew a number of influential grassroots members and sympathizers, provided a platform for Agyapong to share his reflections on the party’s direction and its history with presidential candidates.

According to the former Assin Central MP, the NPP has a consistent tradition of backing candidates with strong electoral performance, and not those who show weak results.

Citing the party’s own historical records, he pointed out that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer, led the NPP into a general election where the party’s performance was, in his words, “abysmal” and should therefore not expect to be re-endorsed for another contest.

Kennedy Agyapong dismissed suggestions that the NPP has always given its presidential candidates more than one chance. He referenced the example of the late Prof. Albert Adu Boahen, who, despite his stature and sacrifice for the party, was not given another chance after leading the NPP in the 1992 elections.

“Prof. Adu Boahen was a pioneer in resisting military dictatorship and played a significant role in the re-emergence of multiparty democracy. Yet, after his defeat in 1992, he was replaced. That tells you that our party is serious about performance,” Agyapong explained.

He contrasted this with the cases of President John Agyekum Kufuor and President Nana Akufo-Addo, both of whom were given second chances, not out of sentiment, but because of the strength of their showings in previous elections.

He mentioned that “Kufuor had only a few months to campaign in 1996, yet his performance was impressive enough to earn him another chance in 2000. That is the NPP’s standard performance,” he said.

British soldier arrested in Kenya over rape allegation

A UK soldier has been accused of raping a woman near a British army training camp in Kenya where another soldier was previously accused of murder.

The alleged rape happened last month close to the British Army Training Unit Kenya (Batuk) near the town of Nanyuki, 200km (125 miles) north of the capital, Nairobi.

The man was arrested and questioned following the alleged incident, which occurred after a group of soldiers visited a bar in the town.

An investigation is being carried out by UK military police from the Defence Serious Crime Unit, which looks into crimes allegedly committed by British service personnel in the UK and overseas.

The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed in a statement that a “service person” had been arrested in Kenya.

“Unacceptable and criminal behaviour has absolutely no place in our Armed Forces and any reporting of a serious crime by serving personnel is investigated independently from their chain of command,” the MoD said.

The alleged rape involving a soldier from the British base in Kenya follows previous allegations that a soldier stationed in Kenya was involved in the murder of a local woman in 2012.

The body of Agnes Wanjiru, who was 21 and a mother of one, was found in a septic tank near the Batuk base three weeks after she disappeared, allegedly after spending the evening with British soldiers.

The Sunday Times reported in 2021 that a British soldier was believed to have been responsible for her murder.

The MoD has since said it was co-operating with a Kenyan investigation into the incident.

The Batuk base was established in 1964 shortly after the East African nation gained independence from the UK.

The UK military has an agreement with Kenya under which it can deploy up to six army battalions a year for periods of training at the site.

But the British army has faced a string of allegations about the conduct of some UK personnel at the camp.

A public inquiry set up by Kenyan MPs last year heard details of alleged mistreatment of local people by British soldiers.

The allegations including a reported hit-and-run incident, as well as claims that some British soldiers had got local women pregnant before abandoning them and their children when they returned to the UK.

Why should somebody go twice? – Ken Agyapong woos NPP members to make him presidential candidate

0

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has made a strong appeal to members of his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to make him their presidential candidate for the 2028 Election.

Speaking in a viral video clip from a party event, the former legislator refuted assertions that a certain candidate should be given a second chance, without naming names.

“Even Prof Adu Boahene, who broke the culture of silence by facing off with Rawlings, we didn’t make him our candidate for a second time after he lost the 1992 elections. Those who don’t want to speak the truth will tell you that President Kufuor went two times, Akufo-Addo three times. How many times was Adu Boahene made a candidate?

“Today, everybody is enlightened, don’t let them throw dust into your eyes,” he said in the Twi dialect.

Kennedy Agyapong added that the former presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo were given the chance to represent the NPP again because of their performances and the short amount of time they had to campaign.

“The reason we made President Kufuor our candidate for a second time was that he used only three to four months to campaign during the first time. Because of the votes he garnered within the four months, we decided that he should be our candidate again. This is the reason why he won when we made him our candidate again.

“When Akufo-Addo went for the first time, he got 49.3%. The election went into a second round, but he could not win because of Tain,” he said.

We don’t recycle failure in elections – Ken Agyapong warns NPP

0

Former NPP flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong says the party has never made it a practice to reward poor performance with a second shot—particularly in the selection of its presidential candidate.

Speaking at Mampong in the Ashanti Region during a visit to mourn the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu, Agyapong told a gathering of party loyalists that the NPP’s electoral history proves one thing: performance is non-negotiable.

“The NPP doesn’t give second chances to candidates who fail to deliver. We didn’t do it for Adu Boahen, and we shouldn’t do it now,” Agyapong declared, taking an indirect jab at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the party in the 2024 general elections but lost to the NDC.

According to the former Assin Central MP, party tradition shows that second chances are earned through credible electoral performance—not handed out based on sentiment or incumbency. “Even President Kufuor had to impress in 1996 before being given another shot in 2000. Nana Addo also proved himself before his eventual win,” he said.

Citing the example of the late Prof. Adu Boahen—NPP’s 1992 flagbearer—Agyapong noted that despite his contributions to Ghana’s democratic revival, the party chose to move on after his defeat. “That tells you the NPP rewards performance, not sympathy,” he said.

Agyapong’s comments come at a time of renewed internal reflection within the NPP, as the party regroups following its defeat in the 2024 elections. His remarks are expected to reignite debate over the direction of the party and the performance of its current leadership.

Positioning himself as a realist and reform advocate, Kennedy Agyapong maintained that loyalty to the NPP must be measured by results and accountability—not blind support.

Highlife Legend, Mike Ejeagha Buried Within 24 Hours In Enugu

Barely a day after his passing, Nigeria’s highlife icon, Mike Ejeagha, has been laid to rest in his hometown of Umuagba, Imezi-Owa, in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Naija News had earlier reported that the 95-year-old singer, popularly known as Gentleman, died on Friday after a prolonged illness.

NPP must not reward poor electoral performance with second chances

0

Former Member of Parliament and erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, has argued that poor electoral performance should not be rewarded with another opportunity to lead the party into the next national election.

Addressing party supporters in Mampong on June 7, 2025, during a visit to mourn the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu, Mr Agyapong emphasised that the NPP’s tradition is rooted in rewarding competence and results, not sentiment.

The former Assin Central MP used the platform to reflect on the current state of the party and to caution against overlooking performance in decisions about leadership selection. His remarks come in the wake of internal conversations over the party’s future and the implications of its recent electoral performance under Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer.

“Let no one be deceived,” Mr Agyapong said. “Our party has a history of rewarding strong candidates. If you lead us into an election and perform abysmally, you should not expect another chance.”

He challenged the view that the NPP has a culture of giving its presidential candidates multiple opportunities, stating that this only applies when the candidate’s first attempt demonstrates significant promise.

“In 1992, Prof. Adu Boahen, despite being a hero of our democratic struggle, was not given another opportunity after losing that election. He was a principled man who sacrificed for the country, yet the party moved on because performance matters,” Mr Agyapong asserted.

He contrasted that precedent with the experiences of former President John Agyekum Kufuor and current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, both of whom were allowed to contest a second time after strong showings in their initial bids.

“Kufuor campaigned for barely a few months in 1996 and still made a remarkable impact. That performance earned him the trust of the party to try again in 2000—and he won. Nana Addo also showed electoral strength before getting a second chance,” he noted.

LatexFoamPromo

“The facts are there. If someone leads us to one of our worst electoral outcomes, we cannot pretend as if that didn’t happen. This is a serious political party. We don’t hand out leadership as a consolation prize,” he stated emphatically.

John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was declared the winner of the December 7, 2024, poll. According to the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Mahama, who was inaugurated as President on December 7, secured 6,591,790 votes, representing 56.42 per cent of valid votes cast.

His closest competitor, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,877,611 votes, accounting for 41.75 per cent

Mr Agyapong’s remarks reflect ongoing tensions within the NPP over leadership direction and succession, with many grassroots supporters expressing discontent after the party’s electoral defeat. His comments are likely to stir further debate as the NPP considers its path forward ahead of future elections.

Gold Stars thrash Accra Lions to win historic 2024-25 Premier League title

0

Gold Stars FC completed a fairytale season by clinching their first-ever Ghana Premier League title in commanding fashion, demolishing Accra Lions 4-0 at a raucous Duns Park on Sunday.

The emphatic victory not only confirmed their place at the summit but also condemned the Lions to relegation, just a season after finishing second in the 2023/24 campaign.

Abdul Farouk Amoaful opened the scoring just four minutes into the game to ignite celebrations among the home fans. Kelvin Oppong doubled the advantage in the 19th minute, laying the foundation for a memorable finale. Second-half goals from Samuel Kumi (73′) and Frank Amankwah (90′) capped off a dominant performance that saw the title secured with a three-point cushion.

While the home crowd erupted in celebration at full-time, the mood was starkly different for Accra Lions, who finished 15th and faced the drop after a disappointing and turbulent campaign.

Nations FC fall short in title chase

Nations FC, who had led the title race, fell at the final hurdle with a surprising 2-0 home defeat to third-placed Heart of Lions at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex. Goals from Samuel Boamah Quansah (18′) and Asante Sedorf (72′) handed the visitors a deserved win and dashed Nations’ title hopes. Despite an impressive campaign, Nations had to settle for second place as they await a judicial decision, just behind the newly crowned champions.

Kotoko pip rivals Hearts to fourth place

Asante Kotoko edged out bitter rivals Hearts of Oak for fourth place via head-to-head record, despite a 3-1 defeat to Vision FC at the Nii Kraku Adjei II Sports Complex. An own goal from Lord Xorse Kudzinya gave Kotoko the early lead, but a brace from Frank Duku and a goal by Edmund Asante turned the game around for the hosts.

Hearts of Oak, meanwhile, ended their campaign on a positive note with a 1-0 win over dethroned champions FC Samartex 1996 at the Accra Sports Stadium. Defender Konadu Yiadom scored the only goal in the 57th minute to give the Phobians their first-ever Premier League win against Samartex in Accra. Nonetheless, they finished fifth, just behind Kotoko.

Medeama disappointed, Aduana finish strong

Medeama SC wrapped up a frustrating campaign with a 2-1 home defeat to Berekum Chelsea at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa. Vincent Klu Adjei opened the scoring for the visitors before Kingsley Braye equalized. But former Medeama striker Kofi Ansu Patrick had the final say, scoring the winner five minutes from time to silence the home fans. Medeama finished eighth, while Chelsea ended the season in 12th position.

Aduana FC ended on a high, sealing a comfortable 3-1 win over newly promoted Basake Holy Stars. Richard Tetteh gave the hosts a first-half lead, which was quickly canceled out by Francis Obeng. However, second-half goals from Emmanuel Marfo (55′) and Alex Boakye (87′ pen) sealed the victory. Despite the defeat, Holy Stars managed to avoid relegation in their debut top-flight season.

Dreams FC shine, Young Apostles survive

Dreams FC closed out the season with a resounding 4-1 victory over relegated Legon Cities. Jonathan Nemorden netted twice, while Joseph Esso and Suraj Seidu added a goal apiece. Albert Adomah scored a consolation for the Royals, whose relegation was confirmed prior to kickoff.

Elsewhere, Bechem United edged out Young Apostles 1-0 thanks to a second-half penalty from Baba Moro Abdulai at the Nana Gyeabour Park. Despite the defeat, the Apostles successfully retained their Premier League status after an encouraging debut campaign.

Bibiani Gold Stars claimed their first-ever Ghana Premier League title after beating Accra Lions by 4-0 at the Duns Park on Sunday.

Gold Stars sit top of the 2024/25 season table on 63 points – three above Nations FC who lost 2-0 at home to Heart of Lions.

Nations are awaiting a decision by the Ghana Football Association after they walked out midway into their Week 33 fixture against Basake Holy Stars. They will remain on 60 points if the decision goes against them but the reverse means they move to 63 points but an inferior head-to-head to Gold Stars gives the Bibiani-based club their maiden title.

In the battle for positions in the top four, the 2-0 victory for Heart of Lions over Nation, kept them in third on 60 points with Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko sharing the fourth spot on 58 points apiece.

Per the head-to-head tiebreaker, Asante Kotoko are currently in fourth place after defeating rivals Hearts by 1-0 in the first round with their reverse fixture ending goalless.

Kotoko failed to clinch an automatic top four after suffering a humiliating 3-1 loss against Vision FC at the Nii Adjei Okraku II Complex in Tema. Hearts of Oak on the other hand kept their top chase intact with a last day victory over Samartex at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has taken a swipe at the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, after the latter accused Parliament’s camera crew of engaging in politics and bias against his side.

Afenyo-Markin expressed strong disapproval of what he described as partisan conduct by parliamentary cameramen during proceedings on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

In a passionate address to the Speaker, the Minority Leader raised concerns over the selective focus of the parliamentary camera crew, accusing them of targeting him in an unprofessional manner by zooming in on his leg when he removed his shoe due to discomfort.

Reacting to this, the Majority Leader, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, was surprised that Afenyo-Markin would be complaining about the camera crew taking visuals of his feet.

He said that the Minority Leader, who is the MP for Effutu, during the Minority’s protest against the detention of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), sat on the floor with his bare feet, but is now complaining about his legs being filmed.

“My friend, the Honourable Minority Leader, is worried about his feet today. A few days ago, he was lying in front of EOCO with his feet on display for all Ghanaians to see. Mr Speaker, a few days ago he, not this cameraman, removed his shoes and was sitting in plain public view and displaying his feet.

“Mr Speaker, and he encouraged all his colleagues to also remove their shoes and sit on the floor. The karma,” Ayariga said.

Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2025 concludes with new global alliances and concrete commitments for a sustainable future

0

The Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC) has successfully concluded its second  edition, reinforcing its position as a vital global platform for advancing sustainable development.

Around 1,600 participants from all across the world—including a notable  number of high-level representatives from politics, international organizations, business,  academia, and civil society—convened in Hamburg on June 2 and 3 to forge new alliances and accelerate progress toward the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

HSC 2025 marked the  launch of important initiatives and the achievement of new consensus, such as the  agreement on the Hamburg Declaration on Responsible AI for the SDGs.

HSC 2025 built on the momentum created by its first edition in October 2024—despite even more  challenging conditions. As outlined in the HSC 2025 Conference Paper, this year’s conference took place in a significantly altered international context. Geopolitical tensions have heightened,  fragmentation has deepened, and the space for efective multilateral engagement appears increasingly constrained.

Against this backdrop, the mission of the HSC proves more vital than  ever. In this sense, HSC 2025 came at the right time and sent a clear and important signal: even  in these times of uncertainty, there is strong support for collective, cross-cuting action—and it  remains possible to forge new alliances and make tangible progress.

The four HSC initiators highlighted the pressing need to forge new alliances and launch cross sector initiatives to advance a sustainable future—especially in these challenging times. German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Reem Alabali-Radovan: “At a  time when nationalist tendencies are jeopardising international cooperation, the Hamburg  Sustainability Conference stands for the spirit of cooperation that binds the world together.  Hamburg sends out a strong signal for solidarity and cooperation, an encouragement to us all.

For two days, around 1,600 dedicated individuals and experts in their field have breathed new  life into the promise upon which international cooperation is founded: that it is beter for all of us  if we pull together—instead of focusing solely on our own interests. The Hamburg Sustainability  Conference has made progress on concrete solutions for some of the key challenges that we  must face in the future: for cities of the future that will be liveable places for more and more  people despite climate change, for the common fight against inequality or for artificial  intelligence that benefits all people.”

First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg Peter Tschentscher: “The 17  Sustainable Development Goals aim to give 8 billion people worldwide a good life and a secure  future, with access to education, health, participation, peace, security, and prosperity.  Implementing this is a mandate and a great responsibility for the international community,  because global developments can only be achieved through cooperation and joint eforts.”

UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner: “The Hamburg Sustainability Conference is a moment to  challenge conventional wisdom, redefine possibilities, and craf a new narrative—not one of  division and decline, but of unity, cooperation, and collective progress. The Hamburg  Declaration on Responsible AI for the Sustainable Development Goals marks an important  milestone in this journey. Initiated at this conference in 2024, this landmark declaration has just  been endorsed by representatives from over 40 governments, private sector organizations, civil  society, and leading research institutions. This outcome represents a crucial commitment to  harnessing AI responsibly, ensuring it promotes equity, connects communities and addresses  global inequalities. This collaboration does not end here. Our task now is to work together to  ensure AI’s extraordinary capabilities drive sustainable development, benefiting everyone,  everywhere, equally.”

Honorary Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Oto Group Michael Oto: “Everyone has  a role to play in tackling global challenges. I firmly believe that the private sector holds many of  the keys to viable solutions. At the same time, it is crucial that policymakers establish enabling  frameworks and the scientific community drives innovation. The initiatives built upon since last  year, together with the new alliances forged at HSC 2025, show that the conference brings the  right stakeholders to the table—and that it’s driving real impact.”

Key Achievements and Outcomes

The following list provides an overview of some key initiatives launched or advanced during HSC 2025. More information—on the sessions, signings, and breakthroughs—will be made  available soon afer the conference.

1. Hamburg Declaration on Responsible AI for the SDGs

On Monday, June 2nd, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Federal  Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) endorsed the Hamburg Declaration  on Responsible AI for the Sustainable Development Goals, together with over 40 governments,  private sector organizations, civil society, and leading research institutions. The landmark  initiative – the first global declaration focused specifically on AI in international development – outlines shared principles and commitments to promote the equitable, inclusive, and sustainable  development and deployment of artificial intelligence worldwide, with particular emphasis on  empowering developing countries. Building on a set of principles presented at HSC 2024, the Declaration is the result of a year-long global consultation involving policymakers, academia,  private sector, and civil society.

2. SCALED: Unlocking Private Investment for Sustainable Development On Monday, June 2nd, the members of the Hamburg Sustainability Platform (HSP) signed a joint  declaration of intent, reafirming their commitment to removing barriers to large-scale  sustainable investment. Rebranded as “SCALED – Scaling Capital for Sustainable Development,”  the initiative brings together public and private institutions to enhance coordination. By the end  of 2025, SCALED plans to launch a dedicated company to mobilize private capital more  eficiently for projects such as solar farms or entrepreneurship support. As a service provider,  the company will create standardized investment vehicles, connect aligned investors, and work  with asset managers to implement investments. It aims to help close financing gaps in  developing countries and could unlock several billion USD in private capital over the coming  years.

3. Launch of the Global Alliance against Inequality

On Tuesday, June 3rd,the Global Alliance against Inequality, was oficially launched. The coalition  unites governments and partners in a bold efort to tackle the systemic roots of inequality  undermining social cohesion and democratic governance worldwide. Germany and Sierra Leone,  alongside the Pathfinders Initiative, signed the declaration of intent commiting to evidence

based policies that address economic and social disparities. The Alliance emphasizes cross regional collaboration, dialogue, and policy innovation to rebuild trust in public institutions and  foster peaceful, just societies.  Among the other notable agreements, signings, and announcements during HSC 2025 are  the following:

The Memorandum of Understanding between the Deutsche Gesellschaf für  Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Euler Hermes to strengthen support for German exports and investments in developing and emerging countries within the framework of  sustainable development; the new Biodiversity Fund of the Aid by Trade Foundation (AbTF), with  an initial capital of €500,000 aimed at supporting biodiversity conservation projects particularly  within global textile supply chains; The addition of one new signatory to the Hamburg Declaration on Green Aviation, and two new signatories to the Hamburg Declaration on the  Decarbonisation of Global Shipping — both initiated at HSC 2024; The Joint Statement of  stakeholders across sectors on Enhancing Municipalities’ Access to Private Capital; and the  presentation of the concept for the “Institute for Sustainability Arbitration” (ISA), which is envisioned as a specialized body dedicated to ensuring legal certainty in sustainability-related  disputes through expert arbitration.

A Platform for Continuous Impact

The HSC 2025 has come to a close, but the work of the HSC continues at full speed. Tomorrow,  on June 4, the HSC Future Economy Day will take place at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce,  focusing on pathways toward a just and sustainable economic transformation. This week marks the Hamburg Sustainability Week, ofering a diverse and engaging program for the city’s broader public. In the months ahead, the HSC will continue its work through various Round Tables, staying  true to its mission as a platform for continuous impact — because lasting progress requires  ongoing commitment. Next year, the third edition of the conference will take place, on June 29–30, 2026.

My parents thought I would change my childhood dream of acting – Jeffery Nortey

Jeffery Nortey says his parents thought he would outgrow his acting dreams Jeffery Nortey says his parents thought he would outgrow his acting dreams

Ghanaian actor and content creator, Jeffery Nortey, has stated that his parents initially did not support his passion for acting.

In an interview with Channel One TV, Jeffery disclosed that while growing up, his parents thought his interest in acting was just a phase and expected him to change his mind as he matured.

Unlike his siblings, who had more traditional career plans, he noted that he stood firm in his desire to become an actor, even when his parents didn’t know how to support him.

“I got a brother and a sister who shared what they wanted to do growing up, but I maintained that I wanted to act. They didn’t know how they could help me. They thought I would change my mind,” he recalled.

Jeffery added that he reminded his family at every stage of his life that acting was his calling, even as far back as his days in primary school.

“At every stage in my life, I reminded them of my resolve to act; after JHS, after SHS, and even before then. Right from primary school, I was called Ramsey Noah,” he said.

He also admitted that in the beginning, he was shy to talk about wanting to be an actor because it seemed unusual at the time.

However, he said his goal has never been to be famous, but rather to use his talent to impact others.

“Then, I was shy to say I wanted to be an actor. At every point, I was the odd one out. It has been my dream, not to be popular or famous, but for others to benefit from it,” he added.

The final funeral rites of the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the occupant of the revered Silver Stool, started on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

The funeral rites, which are known locally as ‘Dote Yie’, will go on for three days, ending on Monday, June 9, 2025.

A number of notable personalities, including former President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and other political figures are expected to grace the second day of the ‘Dote Yie’ on Sunday, June 8, 2025, to pay their last respects to the late Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

Saturday’s rites saw a number of traditional rulers of Asanteman, including Kwahumanhene Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, Mamponghene Abrempong, Effiduasehene Nana Adu Ameyaw II, and Ejurahene Barima Osei Hwedie II, all showing up to pay their solemn respects to the late Mamponghene.

Also present at the event were royals from Eswatini (Southern Africa), who were representing King Mswati III.

One of the touching moments at the event was when the wife and daughter of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II paid their last respects to the late paramount chief, who was the second most powerful ruler in Asanteman.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu, who was born on December 31, 1939, passed on at age 86 and reigned for 26 years.

Until his ascension to the throne, he was known as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, a lawyer and an economist by profession, who later served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Known for his diplomacy and unwavering dedication, Daasebre Osei Bonsu’s legacy spans decades of service both to his people and to Ghana’s broader chieftaincy institution.

COMAC rejects June 9 implementation of energy sector levy

Dr Riverson Oppong is the CEO of the Association of Oil Marketing Companies Dr Riverson Oppong is the CEO of the Association of Oil Marketing Companies

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has firmly stated that it cannot and will not implement the newly approved GH¢1 energy sector levy slated to take effect tomorrow, Monday, June 9, 2025.

This announcement follows a directive from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition mandating the immediate implementation of the Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy (ESSDRL), as approved by Parliament under the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The bill introduces a GH¢1 increase in the levy on petroleum products, a move expected to raise an estimated GH¢5.7 billion annually to help reduce the country’s energy sector debts and support a stable power supply. However, the decision has drawn widespread public criticism, with many describing the levy as a “nuisance tax.”

In a strongly-worded statement released by COMAC, the chamber expressed deep dissatisfaction with both the timing and process of the directive, calling it “neither lawful nor operationally feasible.”

“Worse still, the abrupt implementation denies our members—OMCs—the lead time needed to adjust systems, prices, and inventory,” the statement read. “How are OMCs, especially those on the cash-and-carry system, to generate funds for a tax they did not anticipate, on stock to be lifted tomorrow?”

COMAC further disclosed that its leadership had met with the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, on Thursday, June 5, to discuss the levy and had submitted three key requests aimed at mitigating its impact. According to the chamber, these concerns were completely ignored.

The official letter mandating implementation, dated Friday, June 6, was received early Sunday morning, June 8, despite the date falling on a public holiday—leaving industry players scrambling with little time to prepare.

“Issuing a backdated directive on a holiday and serving it on a weekend for next-day compliance borders on institutional ambush,” the chamber’s statement added. “This approach smacks of coercion rather than governance.”

COMAC reiterated that the downstream petroleum sector is already grappling with eight separate taxes and levies, which together account for 22% of the ex-pump price. The new ESSDRL brings the total to 26%, which COMAC warns could threaten industry survival, competitiveness, and consumer welfare.

The Chamber is therefore calling for a minimum two-week transition period, proposing Monday, June 16, 2025, as a more feasible date for implementation.

“We are industry stakeholders, not bystanders,” the statement concluded. “This must not be reduced to a technocratic rush to impress. We deserve better than Rambo-style directives in the middle of a weekend.”

COMAC says it awaits an urgent and constructive response from the ministry.

Four clubs, one crown, and 90 minutes to make history

0

GhanaWeb Feature by Frank Kamal

The sun will set on the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League this Sunday, June 8, 2025, but no one knows yet whose name will be carved into history.

Four clubs, three points apart, one trophy, and just ninety minutes (or maybe a little more than that) to decide it all.

The streets of Abrankese are already buzzing, not with vendors or ‘trotro’ horns, but with whispers of, can Nations FC really do it? Can a team with no league history hold their nerve and clinch their first-ever title?

They are top of the table, but barely, and they haven’t even finished their last game.

Against Basake Holy Stars, they walked off the pitch in protest. The GFA hasn’t ruled yet but will they be awarded the win? Forced to replay?

Docked points? Everything is uncertain, except the pressure. And now, they must face Heart of Lions in a final-day clash that feels less like football and more like fate.

Heart of Lions knows this story too well; just one year ago, they were in tears, not of joy, but of survival.

They stayed up on the final day, narrowly avoiding relegation.

This season, however, they could become champions. From scraping by to chasing gold, this is a rise no scriptwriter could invent.

And they’ll be stepping into Abrankese with nothing to lose but a dream in their eyes.

Meanwhile, in Bibiani, tension hangs over Dun’s Park like thick harmattan dust.

The Gold Stars faithful are wide-eyed. Last season, they were 11th, respectable but forgettable.

This season, they are tied at the top, and now they welcome Accra Lions, a club no one expected to see here for the wrong reason; because just last year, Accra Lions finished second.

This year? Relegated. It’s the story of a fallen giant, another reminder of how unforgiving this league can be. But Gold Stars won’t show mercy. Not with history knocking; not with glory in reach.

If they win, and Nations FC stumble, Bibiani could erupt. For the first time ever, they could lift the GPL title.

Then comes Asante Kotoko. The Porcupine Warriors have gone three years without winning the league. For them, that’s an eternity.

For their fans, it’s a drought too long.

They are two points from the top. The math isn’t simple, but the mission is clear: beat Vision FC, hope for dropped points ahead, and see what fate decides.

But Kotoko’s ambition doesn’t stop there. They are already in the FA Cup final. The scent of a double lingers.

The possibility of a comeback season, with silverware in both hands is alive, though faint.

And across the capital, heartbreak lingers in red, yellow, and blue. Hearts of Oak should have been title contenders this year. Instead, they’ve endured a season of chaos.

In 2024, they only survived relegation on the final day.

In 2025, with high hopes and optimism around manager Aboubakar Ouattara, many thought they were back. But the season never clicked. Inconsistency, disjointed football, and a furious fanbase unsettled the club.

Now, Ouattara’s job is hanging by a thread and he might not survive the weekend. A final-day win against Samartex may soothe wounds but won’t stop the questions.

Down below, the relegation story has already closed, and it wrote some shocking twists.

Accra Lions, who finished second in 2024, are going down. No one saw it coming.

Legon Cities, who saved themselves in the dying moments of 2024 never even came close this time.

Their relegation was confirmed with three games to spare.

And Nsoatreman, the most tragic of all, withdrew from the league after a fan’s death. Football took a backseat to grief. They, too, will not return next season.

But for all the stories of despair, there are tales of hope rising from the lower leagues.

All three promoted sides – Vision FC, Basake Holy Stars, and Young Apostles – will stay up. They’ve fought, clawed, and earned the right to dream again next year.

Kenyan dies in custody after arrest for online post

Albert Ojwang has been described in reports as a teacher and a blogger Albert Ojwang has been described in reports as a teacher and a blogger

Kenya’s independent police oversight body has launched an investigation into the death of a man who had been detained “for false publication”, police have said.

Albert Ojwang was arrested for a post on X in the western town of Homa Bay and then driven 350km (220 miles) to the capital, Nairobi, his father Meshack Opiyo told journalists.

“While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against a cell wall,” a police statement said. He was rushed to hospital “where he was pronounced dead on arrival”.

The director of rights group Amnesty International’s Kenya branch told the BBC that the death of Ojwang, described as a teacher and blogger, was “very suspicious”.

Amnesty said in a statement that his death “raises serious questions that must be urgently, thoroughly, and independently investigated”.

Senior police officer Stephen Okal is quoted by the Star newspaper as saying what happened in the cell was “an attempted suicide”.

It is not clear what the charge of “false publication” referred to, but Mr Opiyo told online news site Citizen Digital that the arresting police officer said “Albert had insulted a senior person on X”, the social media platform.

Referring to the circumstances of his arrest, Amnesty International Kenya director Irungu Houghton said it was “quite shocking” that Ojwang was not booked in at the local police station after being detained, but was instead taken on a long journey.

He called on the independent investigators to secure what he described as “the crime scene” at the police station in Nairobi.

The police said that Ojwang was “lawfully arrested”.

His detention and death come at a time of rising concern about how some government critics are being treated.

Last week, software developer Rose Njeri, who created a tool to help people oppose a government finance bill – was charged with violating a cybercrime law.

Mahama announces plans to ban use of Styrofoam plastic takeaway packs

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, June 08, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has announced the Government’s plan to ban the importation, manufacturing, and use of Styrofoam plastic takeaway packs in the country.

The President made the announcement when he formally launched the One Tree Per Child Initiative at the Kwabenya Community Senior High School in Accra, as part of activities marking World Environment Day.

The impending ban of styrofoam, a non-biodegradable material, is in response to the growing problem of waste accumulation, especially in urban areas such as Accra.

He said the fight against illegal mining, the wanton destruction of the nation’s forest, and pollution was important in order that they could hand over a good environment to their younger brothers and sisters and their children who were yet unborn.

He reiterated that one of the other things they intended to do was to ban styrofoam as a food packaging material.

“One of the most pernicious polluters is Styrofoam plastic. When you go to buy your food and they put it in that white plastic something, and then you finish eating, you just dump it, that is one of the biggest polluters,” he said.

“And so, we are going to ban the importation of styrofoam plastics.

“We have to use paper packaging or aluminum foil for packaging our food.”

The President said he was informing the manufacturers and importers of Styrofoam of their decision, stating that in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, they were going to ban the importation of styrofoam and production of styrofoam in Ghana.

President Mahama said food packaging in the country would be made from paper and from aluminum material.

OMCs reject sudden rollout, demand June 16 start date

0

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has strongly rejected the immediate implementation of the new Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy (ESSDRL), scheduled to take effect on Monday, June 9, 2025.

In a letter to the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), COMAC expressed “utmost dismay” over the abrupt notice, calling the directive unlawful, impractical, and disruptive to operations.

The Chamber condemned the timing and mode of communication, which it received at 8:00 am on Sunday, June 8—just a day before the levy is set to be enforced.

The letter, signed by COMAC, criticised the directive for being dated on a public holiday and delivered over the weekend, describing the move as coercive and smacks of  a “military regime” approach.

“This approach is neither lawful nor operationally feasible… Issuing a backdated directive on a holiday and serving it on a weekend for next-day compliance borders on institutional ambush,” the statement read.

COMAC noted that it had already raised concerns during a June 5 meeting with the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, where it proposed a three-point plan to mitigate the impact of the new levy. However, the Chamber said the meeting felt “merely ceremonial,” as its proposals were ignored.

According to COMAC, the ESSDRL increase pushes the total tax and levy burden on petroleum products to 26% of the ex-pump price, up from 22%. The Chamber warned that this will undermine industry competitiveness, threaten business survival, and negatively impact consumers.

A major concern is the limited time given to Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to recalibrate their systems and manage existing stock—particularly affecting cash-and-carry operators who had not budgeted for the new levy.

“We therefore wish to state unequivocally: COMAC and its members cannot and will not begin implementation of this levy from Monday, 9th June,” the letter emphasised.

The Chamber is demanding a minimum two-week transition, with a new implementation date of June 16, 2025, to allow the industry adequate time to adjust.

“We are industry stakeholders, not bystanders, and we deserve better than Rambo-style directives in the middle of a weekend,” the statement concluded.

Government should consider youth –led initiatives in climate change issues

0

By Dorcas Stephens

Accra, June 8, GNA- The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adaptation Land Use (WASCAL), a large-scale research-focused Climate Service has urged   the Government to include the youth in climate change issues to unearth their innovative solutions towards environmental challenges.

One surest way for their inclusion was to take steps to continue to embed climate literacy in the tertiary and graduate curriculum to ensure that the future leaders had knowledge, skills and were adequately prepared to take over.

Professor Benjamin Kofi Nyarko, University of Cape Coast (UCC), Geography and Regional Planning Department suggested at the launch of Climate Change Action Now (CCAN), a climate advocacy initiative of West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adaptation Land Use (WASCAL).

The event which was part of this year’s World Environment Day celebrations was  on  the theme, “Youth Powering Ghana’s Climate Resilience.”

Ghana faces increasing vulnerability to the impacts of climate change, ranging from erratic rainfall, prolonged drought to severe flooding and rising temperatures. These challenges did not only impact livelihood but affected security, public health with young people, and rural communities bearing the brunt.

The CCAN Initiative would therefore spotlight youth-led climate solutions, foster dialogue among stakeholders, embark on a national tree-planting drive, advocacy march, and signing pledges towards safeguarding the environment.

Prof Nyarko said there were several youth-led innovations such as clean energy, recycling and manufacturing of various products to enhance livelihoods.  and urged stakeholders to support such youth-led initiatives.

The youth require access to funding, a platform to operate, and mentorship to make genuine decisions. “We need an ecosystem that supports the youth. Resilience is not about bouncing back but by moving forward.”

Prof. Nyarko, said climate resilience did not mean people should be left behind, adding that there were several people who did not get access to education but have indigenous ideas which could be tapped into to sustain the environment.

He called on the government to facilitate the provision of micro grants or seed funding to nature, their innovations and ideas of the youth.

“Climate resilience should be based on bold decisions and real investments.

Youth should not be seen as an afterthought. They should be given the platform and policy support, nobody should be left behind when it comes to climate resilience, Climate change is real, and we need to act now.

We need to recognise the youth as agents of change because they bring what many institutions lack,” Prof.Nyarko said.

He said the youth had the courage to challenge the status quo, demand accountability and action, and think creatively.

Prof. Wilson Agyare, Director of Graduate Studies Programme, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), said climate extremism and heatwaves were major drivers of food insecurity.

Prof. Agyare mentioned deforestation, urbanisation, and unsustainable farming as some of the activities affecting the climate

He said that land use and planning were only done on paper but did not happen in practical terms.

Prof Agyare emphasized on the need to educate children on climate literacy and preserve Ghana’s wetlands.

Prof. Emmaneul W. Ramde, Executive Director, WASCAL said his organisation was dedicated to grooming and helping the youth in their innovative ideas.

He said WASCAL would continue to shape and commercialize the ideas of the youth.

The correlation between climate change and entrepreneurial skills could be a solution to youth unemployment.

Prof. Ramde said WASCAL has so far trained about 500 graduates, Masters, and PhD students in various fields such as climate change and economy, climate and conflict, climate and health, marine life, and blue economy, among others.

WASCAL is dedicated to implementing comprehensive solutions caused by climate change.

Kwame Nsiah also known as Okyeame Kwame, a musician and Environment advocate, appealed to the public to make sacrifices to save the environment.

“I have personally stopped eating meat because of climate change, that is a concrete sacrifice I have made to help save he climate.” he added

CCAN is expected to mobilise over 10,000 Ghanaians through both digital and offline channels to take climate action and strengthen collaboration between government and academic institutions.

It would also create a multi-stakeholder platform to discuss and promote youth-led climate action strategies.

WASCAL and its stakeholders later planted trees to mark this year’s World Environment Day.

‘Biopsy is done in a day’ – KBTH neurosurgeon counters details of Ofori-Atta’s Mayo Clinic medical report

0

(L-R) Neurosurgeon Dr Mohammed Abdullah, Ken Ofori-Atta and Ofori-Atta's doctor, Dr Ahmed Abdalrhim (L-R) Neurosurgeon Dr Mohammed Abdullah, Ken Ofori-Atta and Ofori-Atta’s doctor, Dr Ahmed Abdalrhim

Dr Hadi Mohammed Abdullah, a top neurosurgeon at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, has countered some of the details in a supposed medical report from the doctor taking care of embattled former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, who has been declared wanted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The supposed letter from Ofori-Atta’s doctor, Ahmed Abdalrhim, a doctor at the Section of International Medicine of Rochester at the Mayo Clinic, United States, indicated that the former minister underwent a biopsy, which led to him being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Dr Abdalrhim indicated that while Ofori-Atta has been scheduled for surgery on the prostate cancer, he needs a recovery time from the biopsy he underwent and therefore cannot travel back to Ghana.

“I am writing to inform you that Mr Ofori-Atta has undergone an MR-guided biopsy and has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. A surgical intervention has been deemed necessary, after the testing and MRI and biopsy procedures in March 2025, as I indicated in my February letter. This surgical procedure has been scheduled for June 13, with Dr Paras Shah of the Department of Urology… It is hoped that a closer date may open up.

“Following the procedure, Mr Ofori-Atta will require a recovery period before he is able to travel to his home country,” parts of the letter read.

Reacting to this in an interview on JoyNews, on June 7, 2025, Dr Mohammed Abdullah said that the medical procedure in Dr Abdalrhim’s letter was questionable.

“But usually, biopsies are done as a day activity. Usually, in Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, it is done on the ward, and the patient goes home the same day. Some even do it in the clinics,” he said.

He reiterated, “This is what we do in Korle Bu, and I’m sure in many, many hospitals across the country where urological services are available.”

He explained that the procedure stated in the letter is just a form of minor surgery to make a diagnosis and not a procedure to “remove the disease per se.”

He also pointed out that the first and second letters that have so far been issued by Ofori-Atta’s doctor do not ‘reconcile.’

“From the two letters that I’ve seen, it was clear that as at March, he would be undergoing surgery. So, it’s very difficult to reconcile the two letters because the second letter now says that they had to undergo MRI-guided biopsy. So, it means at that time, no diagnosis had been made, unless Mayo wants to send that information that the biopsy was the surgery that they were talking about,” he said.

Internet divided over fresh twist on the pricy Birkin bag

0

A Philadelphia designer has sparked a debate online after transforming classic tote bags into luxury handbags that cost more than some people’s rent.

The ‘Boatkin’ – part Birkin, part tote – is a bargain vintage LL Bean Boat and Tote bag restructured to mimic the style of the luxury Hermes Birkin bag that can cost upwards of $10,000.

The controversial bag is the creation of Jen Risk, founder of brand Hathaway Hutton.

The Hathaway Hutton website describes the Boatkin as ‘a super fun super niche super useful tote bag that you can spill an entire nitro cold brew in and not have one ounce of guilt about it.’

Risk, who describes her creation as ‘quiet luxury with a smirk,’ charges between $1,200 and $1,600 for each custom bag.

‘I wanted to mess with the seriousness of it all and give it some personality,’ she told the New York Times in a recent interview:

The bag is priced at a staggering markup from the original L.L. Bean tote’s which comes with a $35-$55 price tag.

The designer has already sold over 300 Boatkins since launching the concept.

Shoppers are now divided over the idea with many slamming the bag online, the creator acknowledged.

‘Most people love it, which has been really fun,’ Risk said. ‘A few people get weirdly mad.’

‘Wdym old and tattered LL Bean Boat and Totes are being hacked into a Boatkin and being sold for $1,500?!? I’m scratching my head a bit but ngl, I kinda want one,’ one conflicted user wrote on X.

Others commented: ‘Obsessed,’ while claiming it’s the ‘bag of the summer.’

The product is made from ‘excellently crafted vintage canvas totes, hand cut and hand sewn,’ according to the website.

‘Every single square inch of fabric and canvas from the original tote has been used (no really… there’s like 2 square inches of waste leftover).’

The website also tells customers to ‘Please ONLY purchase a Boatkin™ if you know and understand that vintage totes were ‘used and abused’ by the people that loved them before I took them to the chopping block to give them a new life.

UNESCO, media groups push for swift passage of broadcasting bill

0

Media stakeholders, civil society groups and regulators are urging Parliament to pass Ghana’s broadcasting bill, describing it as necessary to address challenges facing the country’s growing and evolving media sector, especially in community broadcasting.

The call was made at a consultation meeting organised by the UNESCO Accra Office on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

The event brought together representatives from the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), the National Communications Authority (NCA), as well as legal and academic experts to review the bill and examine its possible impact on broadcasting in Ghana.

The Country Representative and Head of Office for UNESCO in Accra, Mr Edmond Moukala, said the proposed law offers a chance to shape broadcasting in line with the country’s democratic goals.

He said community media provides a space for local voices and helps promote public dialogue.

“Community media reflects local cultures, concerns and aspirations in ways national media often cannot,” Mr Moukala said.

“For rural and underserved communities, it is a source of information, education and civic engagement. But this potential is limited by poor funding, weak infrastructure and unclear regulation.”

The meeting was chaired by Professor Kwame Karikari, who traced efforts to introduce broadcasting legislation back to 1996.

LatexFoamPromo

He said various proposals had been submitted under the administrations of Presidents Rawlings, Kufuor, Atta Mills and Mahama, but none had been passed into law.

“The proposed law has survived every administration since Rawlings, yet it remains unpassed,” Professor Karikari said.

“Broadcasting law is not a priority for any government. Media regulation is politically sensitive, and that has contributed to the delay.”

He said the country’s broadcasting space had grown from a single state-owned broadcaster to nearly 600 radio stations, but regulatory systems remained weak. He noted that issues such as frequency allocation, ownership transparency and content regulation had not been properly addressed.

Lawyer and media advocate Mr Samson Lardy Anyenini, who reviewed the 2024 draft at the meeting, proposed amendments to strengthen protections for community media.

He called for automatic tax waivers, clearer rules to guarantee ownership by residents of the communities served, and equal representation of women in station leadership.

Mr Anyenini said earlier versions of the bill had barred politically exposed persons and religious organisations from owning community radio stations, but these restrictions had been removed from the latest draft.

“The 2024 draft bill removes safeguards such as the ban on politically exposed persons owning community stations. That must be reinstated,” he said. He also recommended scrapping restrictions on advertising and providing financial support to help community stations remain operational.

Officials from the NCA admitted that frequency allocation had become increasingly difficult, with most frequencies already assigned.

They said the current rule requiring at least 30 per cent local ownership of broadcast stations was difficult to enforce, as verifying actual ownership structures remained a challenge.

“The only path forward is to strictly enforce regulation,” an NCA official said. “Too many operators are failing to renew their licences or are operating without valid authorisations, causing interference.”

GIBA representatives raised concerns about what they described as unequal treatment of broadcasters, particularly smaller and rural-based stations.

They said many of the 162 stations currently under scrutiny for authorisation issues were being unfairly targeted, while others continued to operate without proper licences.

“We need consistency and clarity,” one broadcaster said. “The system must be fair.”

The meeting also discussed the proposed National Broadcasting Development Fund. Some participants said rules must be put in place to prevent the fund from being diverted to commercial broadcasters instead of supporting community media.

There were also concerns about how the bill defines “community”, with warnings that some commercial entities could exploit the term to gain access to benefits intended for non-commercial, locally run stations. Several speakers called for more airtime to be given to programmes in indigenous languages and content reflecting local realities.

Other matters raised included the influence of political and religious figures on community radio, the lack of coverage of district assembly activities, and the impact of high electricity costs on small broadcasters.

Some participants proposed that district assemblies could offer limited financial assistance to community stations through the District Assemblies Common Fund. They said such support must be regulated to avoid political interference.

By the end of the meeting, participants agreed that the broadcasting bill should address not only administrative regulation but also the practical realities facing media outlets, especially those serving rural and marginalised communities.

“The bill must reflect the realities of Ghana’s media today,” Mr Moukala said. “We count on the experts and the lawmakers to shape a law that responds to the needs of the people.”

“Stop talking, through write-ups or whatever you are doing, because whatever you write, people will assume you are referring to Agradaa,” she said in a video.

Sally Mann argued that since the case is already in court, Empress didn’t have to comment further.

“Wait till the matter is settled in court and when that happens, we all join you to celebrate your victory,” she added.

Sally further stated that Agradaa had nothing to lose in the feud, which explained her attitude toward the entire situation.

She argued that Gifty, on the other hand, has her brand at stake and shouldn’t engage in anything that could damage her hard-earned reputation as a gospel artiste.

“Once the victory is not in, I want you to stop talking, stop shading and stop drawing that attention to you. Empress you are my untouchable and Agradaa has nothing to lose. She’s a social butterfly,” she said.

“You came into this industry as a gospel musician and that’s what people know you for. So if you decide to go on this tangent with Agradaa, then you’re losing,” she added.

Gospel music is not for entertainment

Esther Godwyll says gospel music is for impact, not fun Esther Godwyll says gospel music is for impact, not fun

Ghanaian gospel musician, Esther Godwyll, has stated that gospel music should not be seen as a form of entertainment.

According to the “Faithful God” hitmaker, gospel music is meant to inspire change and bring spiritual comfort, not to entertain.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Esther explained that gospel music events are different from regular musical shows.

She believes people should not attend gospel shows just to have fun or enjoy a performance like they would at a highlife or hiplife concert.

Instead, she said they should come with open hearts, ready to connect spiritually and receive a message that can lead to transformation in their lives.

“When people attend our events, they shouldn’t just look for entertainment. They should come with open hearts, ready to absorb the positive change the lyrics can inspire,” she said.

Esther Godwyll also stressed that gospel music is not meant for applause or fanfare.

She noted that the focus of gospel music is not on showmanship or excitement, but on the message it carries.

“The gospel was never designed for fanfare or applause but to bring comfort, warmth and joy,” she explained.

She further added that although gospel music may not entertain in the usual way people expect, it still carries a powerful force that can make a real difference in people’s lives.

“While we may not entertain in the traditional sense, the light we carry has the power to brighten lives. This powerful perspective resonates deeply, inviting listeners to engage with gospel music on a spiritual level rather than a superficial one,” she added.

The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the assault of Latif Iddrisu, a JoyNews journalist, during the protest by supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the arrest and prolonged detention of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias “Chairman Wontumi.”

The police, in a statement issued on Sunday, June 8, 2025, indicated that the suspect, 55-year-old Theophilus Thompson, was arrested on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

It added that it was working to arrest all the individuals involved in the assault.

“Following investigations, on June 7, 2025, at about 5:00 pm, the Regional Police Command arrested Theophilus Thompson, aged 55, at James Town in connection with the assault. The suspect is currently in custody and is assisting with the investigation.

“Efforts are underway to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the incident,” part of the statement reads.

It concluded by stating; “The Accra Regional Police Command reiterates its commitment to protecting the rights of journalists and ensuring that anyone who engages in acts of violence against media personnel or any member of the public is brought to justice.”

Additional information gathered by GhanaWeb indicates that the suspect will be arraigned before a circuit court in Accra on Monday, June 9, 2025, as the police work to arrest the other suspects.

About the assault:

Supporters of the NPP had gathered outside the EOCO office, demanding his release, leading to heightened tensions.

During the agitation, some supporters clashed with police and reportedly vandalised two police vehicles, prompting the deployment of additional security to maintain order.

Latif Iddrisu was covering the event when he was assaulted by some of the protesters.

Video footage shared by JoyNews showed a chaotic scene with a large crowd surrounding Iddrisu, who was attempting to report on the situation.

“Nobody has attacked any police,” some angry supporters shouted at the journalist upon hearing the details of his live report.

“Some party supporters have concerns about the fact that has been reported. But that is the fact, and we will not back down on that. The fact is that – and you will find it in the video that we sent – that and that has been sent about the attack on the pickup truck by some of the supporters of the New Patriotic Party who have gathered here to show solidarity to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party,” the reporter emphasised.

In the heat of the report, Latif was surrounded by some of the supporters who sought to register their displeasure with the report, while some were seen heckling and shoving him.

The reporter at one point noted that he had been hit with a stone.

“So right now, I have been assaulted with this pebble, and the assault is captured live on television…” Latif reported.

Franck Ribery ‘replies’ Cristiano Ronaldo over Ballon d’Or comment

0

Ex-Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery (L) and Cristiano Ronaldo (R) holding the 2013 Ballon d'Or Ex-Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery (L) and Cristiano Ronaldo (R) holding the 2013 Ballon d’Or

Football great, Cristiano Ronaldo’s remark that Ballon d’Or winners should be part of the Champions League winning team has triggered former French footballer, Franck Ribery, to question his assertion.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s game against Spain in the UEFA Nations League, Ronaldo noted that the Champions League should play a major role in determining the Ballon d’Or winner.

The Real Madrid legend stated that the award has lost its prestige and value in recent times, as the winner could go to players who haven’t won major tournaments, while Champions League winners are overlooked.

“For me, whoever wins the Ballon d’Or should be a player who has won the Champions League. I think this award has lost its value,” he said.

However, Ribery took to his X account to respond, seemingly ridiculing Ronaldo’s comment.

“So, you need to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d’Or?” he quizzed, adding three laughing emojis.

Ribery’s response may be linked to their past rivalry, particularly the 2013 Ballon d’Or award, which Ronaldo won despite Ribery’s impressive season with Bayern Munich.

That year, Ribery won the treble with Bayern, including the UEFA Champions League, Bundesliga, and DFB-Pokal.

Ronaldo’s recent assertion that the Ballon d’Or should be given to a Champions League winner likely triggered Ribery’s remark.

God told me the day I leave RCCG my first born will pass away – Pastor Adeboye

0

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has revealed a deeply personal divine warning; God told him his firstborn would die if he ever left the denomination.

Speaking during the June Holy Ghost Service themed “Destined for Greatness (Part 2)” at Redemption City in the early hours of Saturday, June 7, Adeboye, affectionately called Daddy GO, emphasized the critical need for spiritual direction and staying where God has placed you.

He raised concern over the growing trend among young Christians who frequently switch churches, always showing up as newcomers.

Recalling his own early Christian walk, he said, “There were three major ministries that were making waves, and they were very good. There were different temptations to go from one to another.”

Despite these temptations, Adeboye said God gave him a clear and sobering instruction, “God spoke to me, in a very specific manner, ‘Son, I brought you here. This is where you will stay. The day you leave this denomination, your firstborn will d+e.’”

At the time, RCCG was relatively unknown, operating out of a small building in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

He shared how, even as a university lecturer, God told him to submit to a spiritual leader with no formal education, “I was a lecturer in the university. My father in the Lord didn’t go to secondary school, not even primary. But God said this is where you will stay.”

Pastor Adeboye urged believers, especially the youth, to prayerfully discover where God wants them to be, and stay there.
“Discover where God wants you to stay, and stay there,” he advised.

He also clarified that his statement was not a claim that RCCG is superior, “I am not saying we are better than any other denomination,” he concluded.

VIDEO: New Force condemns bodyguard assault of unidentified man

0

The New Force political movement has issued a public apology and pledged disciplinary action following outrage over a viral video showing one of its security operatives assaulting an unidentified man during a public appearance by its leader, Nana Kwame Bediako.

The footage, which has been widely shared on social media, captures the moment an unidentified man attempted to approach Mr Bediako at a recent event.

A member of the politician’s security detail is seen intercepting the man, grabbing him by the neck and forcefully striking him in the chest.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Charles Yomekpe, the New Force described the incident as “deeply saddening and disturbing,” noting that the supporter had only attempted to speak with the candidate.

“The individual in question was unarmed, posed no threat, and deserved nothing but dignity and respect,” the statement said.

The movement issued what it called its “sincerest apologies” to the victim and his family, as well as to Ghanaians who, it said, rightfully expect higher standards of conduct from its representatives.

LatexFoamPromo

“No individual, supporter or otherwise, should ever be subjected to violence, especially in a democratic environment where engagement and expression are to be protected,” it added.

Mr Yomekpe stressed that the behaviour captured in the video does not reflect the values of the movement and confirmed that internal disciplinary processes had been initiated. “Let it be made unequivocally clear that our movement strongly condemns this behaviour. It is unacceptable, unjustifiable, and entirely out of line with the values we hold,” the statement read.

The group further assured the public that the individual responsible for the assault will be held fully accountable in line with the law and internal procedures. It said the investigation into the matter is ongoing and pledged transparency throughout the process.

In the wake of the incident, the New Force has promised to rebuild public trust, committing to measures that will prevent similar misconduct. “We are committed to restoring public confidence by ensuring that such behaviour is never repeated,” Mr Yomekpe noted. He also thanked the public for drawing attention to the matter and for “holding us to the highest standard.”

As of now, there has been no personal comment from Mr Bediako on the matter.

Maven communications honours 41 leading businesses at 2025 Ghana Business League Awards

0

Vision, resilience, and excellence took centre stage at the 2025 Ghana Business League Awards, held on Friday, 6th June, at the prestigious Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

The high-level event, organised by Maven Communications, sought to acknowledge Ghana’s most exceptional businesses across a broad spectrum of sectors.

Bringing together prominent business leaders, high-performing enterprises, and key industry stakeholders, the Ghana Business League Awards served as a platform to celebrate excellence in enterprise, innovation, and leadership at the highest level.

Under the theme “From Vision to Success: Celebrating Ghana’s Top Businesses,” the ceremony underscored the pivotal role of strategic foresight, innovation, and tenacity in shaping Ghana’s business landscape and influencing broader continental advancement.

The Member of Parliament for Bodi and Deputy Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Sampson Ahi, who graced the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour, lauded the transformative contributions of Ghanaian enterprises and emphasised the private sector’s central role in advancing national development.

“Tonight is more than a mere awards ceremony; it stands as a testament to the power of vision, the triumph of perseverance, and the collective wealth of a nation rising above adversity to forge prosperity,” Hon. Ahi remarked.

He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to cultivating a business-friendly environment through comprehensive regulatory reforms and strategic engagement with private sector actors.

The Deputy Minister reiterated that his Ministry remains aligned with the government’s 24-hour economy agenda—an initiative aimed at creating a more agile, responsive business environment.

“Platforms such as this are crucial instruments in our shared quest to build a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous economy,” he added.

Chairman of the 2025 Awards Committee, Evans Hockey, delivered the official welcome address, paying tribute to the journeys and contributions of both award recipients and nominees.

“Whether you walk away with an award or not, your presence here this evening is evidence that you are among Ghana’s finest,” he affirmed. “We are the architects of our nation’s future, and we carry within us the potential to shape a radiant tomorrow.”

Mr Hockey further emphasised that the awards were not granted based solely on financial metrics, but also took into account corporate values such as innovation, social responsibility, service excellence, and community engagement.

“This is about recognising vision realised through action—proof that success is not only attainable but inevitable,” he observed.

Event Director at Maven Communications, Jojo Danso Asante, congratulated all participating firms and elaborated on the company’s overarching mission.

“We are not merely event organisers; we create platforms that honour genuine achievement and catalyse transformation. We are proud to be the driving force behind not only this ceremony, but also initiatives such as the African Best Business Awards and the forthcoming HR Services and Awards.”

Mr Asante also highlighted the organisation’s philanthropic wing, the Maven Foundation, which focuses on youth empowerment and skills development.

“Our commitment to national development is expressed not only through our collaborations with businesses but also through our investment in the next generation,” he said.

In a post-event interview, Mr Asante noted that the awards were strategically designed to bolster the capacity of Ghanaian companies to scale up and align more closely with government policy, particularly the 24-hour economy initiative.

He added that the selection process entailed a rigorous assessment of each company’s contribution to economic growth, innovation, and national progress.

Award recipients were drawn from key sectors including manufacturing, services, agribusiness, and technology. The event was supported by leading sponsors such as KPMG, Sunshine, and other prominent industry players. A digital registration and barcode system was implemented to streamline logistics and enrich the guest experience.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Ahi congratulated all nominees and awardees, “Your excellence deserves to be celebrated not merely this evening, but throughout the year. Let us continue to move from vision to success—building a Ghana in which every business has the opportunity to flourish and contribute meaningfully to our collective destiny.”

90 health workers undergo training of long-acting reversible contraceptives to curb maternal mortality

0

The training workshop was organised by the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council The training workshop was organised by the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council

A total of 90 midwives and Community Health Nurses in the Eastern Region are being trained in Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive methods as part of efforts to improve maternal health and family planning services.

The training workshop, held in batches with the first 25 participants, is organised by the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Government of Ghana. It seeks to address adolescent reproductive health challenges and reduce maternal deaths.

It aims to equip midwives and community nurses in the region with skills in administering Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive methods and life-saving techniques in maternal healthcare.

The training is part of the 8th Country Programme of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which targets zero maternal deaths, zero unmet need for family planning, and zero gender-based violence.

Alexander Otopa, the focal person, told the media that the programme started in 2013 and is expected to end in 2027 across five regions in Ghana.

He explained that the Eastern Region joined the programme in 2024 due to its vulnerabilities in maternal health, family planning, and gender- and sex-based violence.

“The central focus of the programme is to improve adolescent sexual and reproductive health, maternal and family outcomes. To achieve this, we started the journey by training midwives and CHNs, and the results have been impactful. To sustain the gains, ERCC, in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of the GHS, with funding from UNFPA, intends to train at least 90 midwives and CHNs, all geared towards attaining the programme’s goals,” he stated.

Edith Asiedua Dompreh, Eastern Regional Public Health Nurse, said, “We expect the participants to gain the skills to provide quality services to clients in the communities without any complications and, again, to prevent them from unwanted pregnancies.”

Some participants shared their experiences, acknowledging the myths and misconceptions about contraceptives while expressing confidence that they are now better positioned to educate and support their communities.

The initiative, which targeted aspiring food entrepreneurs and small-scale producers, aimed to tackle the influx of substandard yogurt products on the Ghanaian market and lay the foundation for a more robust, locally-driven dairy industry.

Speaking at the event, Dr Delali Kottoh, a Senior Research Scientist at GAEC, educated participants on the various types of yogurt and their associated health benefits.

He stressed the importance of hygiene and quality control in yogurt production.

“There are three main types of yogurt products that I will introduce you to today. We have Live Yoghurt, Probiotic Yoghurt, and Bio Yoghurt,” he said.

He explained that probiotic and bio yogurts are especially beneficial to human gut health and the immune system.

“The human immune system helps fight all kinds of diseases and yoghurt consumption is most recommended after meals, during digestive issues, or as a daily supplement to support overall wellness,” he added.

Beyond health, Dr Kottoh highlighted the economic potential of yogurt production, stressing that effective branding and packaging could help local products stand out in an increasingly health-conscious market.

“Branding and Packaging which involves using attractive, informative, and tamper-proof packaging to aid the product to stand out in local markets as well as highlighting the health benefits of some specific yogurt such as probiotic and bio yoghurts helps to appeal to health-conscious consumers,” he stated.

He further encouraged producers to consider targeted sales channels such as schools, gyms, supermarkets, and local markets, while also leveraging social media to increase visibility and consumer engagement.

The session brought together participants from diverse backgrounds, including officials from GAEC, department heads, and members of the public with interests in agribusiness, food science, and small-scale processing.

The training marks part of GAEC’s ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between science and industry for national development.

Accra Hearts of Oak face Samartex 1996 Football Club in the last game of the 2024/2025 Ghana Premier League season at the Accra Sports Stadium on June 8, 2025.

The Phobians have hit form at a crucial stage, securing a 2-0 victory over already relegated Legon Cities last weekend.

That win stretched their unbeaten run to five matches (W4, D1), lifting them to 55 points, just two short of a top-four finish.

With 31 goals scored and only 18 conceded, Hearts boast the second-best defensive record in the league under head coach Aboubakar Ouattara.

Samartex, the reigning champions, will relinquish their crown on the final day after falling short in their bid to defend the title.

A dramatic 2-1 win over Aduana FC last weekend lifted them to sixth place with 51 points, having scored 33 and conceded 24.

Christopher Ennin’s side have lost back-to-back away matches to Heart of Lions and Nations FC, but remain one of the better travelling teams in the league.

Since their promotion in the 2022/23 season, Samartex have avoided defeat in both league visits to Accra.

Funeral Wear Styles for Ladies

0

Funeral attire for ladies is traditionally respectful, modest, and often in darker or muted tones, particularly black, navy, or grey. The goal is to show honor and sympathy, so the style should be elegant yet understated. However, cultural and religious customs may influence the specifics of funeral dress codes.

A classic black midi or maxi dress remains the most appropriate choice. It should be modest—avoid deep necklines, short hemlines, or overly tight fits. Sleeveless dresses can be paired with a shawl or blazer for extra coverage and warmth.

Skirt and blouse combinations also work well. A knee-length or longer skirt paired with a button-down shirt or a plain blouse creates a neat and respectful look. Fabrics like cotton, crepe, or soft chiffon are preferred for comfort and elegance.

For formal or traditional funerals, African prints in dark or muted colors (such as Ankara or Kente in black, brown, or purple) are commonly worn in many cultures. These can be styled into long dresses, wrapper and blouse sets, or kaftans. Lace or brocade fabrics in subdued shades may also be acceptable, depending on custom.

Trousers with a long blouse or tunic offer a more modern yet modest alternative, especially for outdoor or less formal services. Tailored pants in black or charcoal paired with a flowing top maintain a respectful look.

Footwear should be simple—low heels, flats, or clean sandals are appropriate. Avoid flashy jewelry or bright makeup. Instead, keep accessories minimal and tasteful.

In colder weather, a black coat or trench can complete the look. A headwrap or hat is acceptable in some cultures, especially for married or elderly women.

Ultimately, funeral wear for ladies should reflect dignity, respect, and cultural appropriateness, while allowing for comfort and quiet grace.
