WAEC blames poor core mathematics performance on student skill gaps WAEC blames poor core mathematics performance on student skill gaps

The Head of Public Relations at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, has attributed the sharp decline in core mathematics performance in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to specific skill gaps among students.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews and monitored by GhanaWeb on Monday, December 1, 2025, he explained that while the exam questions were consistent with the syllabus and similar in difficulty to previous years, many candidates struggled with key areas.

WASSCE results delayed due to ending funds from Ministry of Education – WAEC

He pointed out that the students found it challenging to represent mathematical information in diagrams, solve general mathematics-related problems, construct cumulative frequency tables, make deductions from real-life scenarios, solve application problems in simple interest, translate word problems into mathematical expressions, and interpret results from cumulative frequency curves.

“They (the examiners) indicated the candidate weaknesses in representing mathematical information in diagrams, solving global mathematics related problems, constructing cumulative frequency tables from given data distribution for making deductions from real-life problems.

“Solving application problems in simple interest, translating word problems into mathematical expressions and interpreting of results from cumulative frequency curve So, these are areas that the chief examiners can observe weaknesses in the children’s perform other countries performance,” he noted.

According to WAEC’s 2025 provisional results, more than half of the candidates, representing 220,008 candidates, failed core mathematics, marking the subject’s lowest performance in seven years.

Barcelona sought Messi’s consent before signing me – Kevin-Prince Boateng

Kevin-Prince Boateng was Messi's teammate in 2019 at Barcelona Kevin-Prince Boateng was Messi’s teammate in 2019 at Barcelona

Former Ghanaian attacker, Kevin-Prince Boateng has claimed that Lionel Messi had the power to block his transfer to Spanish giants Barcelona in 2019.

Kevin-Prince Boateng was signed by Barcelona in January 2019 from Italian side Sassuolo on an €8 million loan deal with an option to buy.

The former AC Milan forward disclosed that all club officials who had a major say in decisions, including club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, manager Ernesto Valverde, and both sporting directors, including Eric Abidal, had approved the deal.

However, the decision-makers asked him to hold on and as they seek approval from the Argentine national team captain before the deal could be sealed.

Boateng revealed that the signing only became a reality after Lionel Messi agreed to it.

“If Messi had said no, the transfer wouldn’t have happened. At the time, there were two sporting directors. One of them was Eric Abidal, and he said, ‘Yes, we want you.’ The other sporting director said, ‘We want you.”

“The president (Bartomeu) wanted me, the coach (Valverde) too, so I said, ‘Perfect, let’s sign tomorrow!’ They replied, ‘No, we have to talk to Leo first.’ He had that power. I went to sleep hoping Messi would approve my signing. If he had refused, I wouldn’t have signed for Barcelona,” he said.

Boateng’s short loan spell at Barcelona did not yield the expected results, as he produced no goals or assists in five official appearances.

MUSIGA Goes Digital Soon – President

MUSIGA Executives and stakeholders in a group photograph at the conference

In partnership with Omni Strategies Ghana, a software development and technology solutions company based in Accra, specialised in building software and websites, the Musician Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) is set to operate digitally in the coming days.

This announcement was made known by the President of the Union, Bessa Simons, during the 3rd Biennial Conference held under the theme, “Positioning MUSIGA for Growth in a Digital Era.”

Bessa Simons affirmed that before the year ends, MUSIGA is going fully digital, saying, “We’ve built this system that is going to allow MUSIGA to operate. The office management is going to be fully digital. If even you want to register, you can do it on your Android phone, and you’ll get the results.”

He added that MUSIGA is working with Omni Strategies Ghana, who are also the managers of GMX, a music streaming platform championing Ghanaian music.

He added that the streaming platform, since it began operation six months ago, has been able to connect with almost 90% of Ghana’s media, radio stations, and television stations, and they only promote Ghanaian music.

“So if you are somewhere, you want to say, I want to hear Ghana music, they will pop up. And so that is why we will be traveling with them to all the regions for them to do their pilot. So at least if your music is there, we know you are already receiving royalties,” he said.

Bessa Simons disclosed that “Central to our growth strategy is an ongoing MUSIGA membership drive across all regions, aimed at welcoming more youth—including not only secular musicians, but also choristers and traditional artistes—embracing all dimensions of our musical heritage and strengthening our union’s unity and cultural influence.”

He added that the union has been able to offer Group Life Insurance for the third year, and this insurance covers artistes, their spouse, children, and parents.

“Even if something happens to you and you can’t play music again, you get a lump sum payment. That’s why you should join us—when you join the musicians’ union, we’ll make sure you have your National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card, so at least when you go to the hospital, the doctors will look after you, unless it’s a very critical situation,” he added.

WaterAid Country Director installed as development queenmother of Bongo

0

By Anthony Adongo Apubeo, GNA

Bongo (U/E), Dec. 01, GNA – Ms Ewurabena Yanyi-Akofur, Country Director of WaterAid Ghana, a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)-focused organisation, has been installed as a Development Queenmother in the Bongo Traditional Area.

With the skin name “Kosom Pognaba” (Queenmother of Potable Water), she was honoured for leading the implementation of WaterAid Ghana’s strategic plan to ensure universal access to potable water and other WASH-related needs in the Bongo District.

Through the strategic plan, Bongo has been adopted as a model district for WaterAid Ghana, working closely with local government structures, traditional authorities, residents, and development partners to ensure every household has access to potable water.

To this end, the organisation is not only providing water infrastructure for communities, institutions, and public spaces, but is also collaborating with relevant stakeholders to ensure the treated water from the Vea Dam is redirected to serve the people of Bongo.

This forms part of a wide range of measures aimed at permanently addressing the high fluoride concentration in underground water in Bongo, a challenge that has affected residents for decades.

Additionally, WaterAid Ghana has launched a sanitation challenge in the district, working with traditional authorities to sensitise communities about the dangers of open defecation and mobilising them to eliminate the menace.

The initiative has also led to the establishment of a Sanitation Fund to support poor and vulnerable households to construct toilet facilities, thereby contributing to the fight against open defecation and promoting environmental cleanliness.

Bonaba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum, the Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, said the installation was well-deserved due to the immense contributions of WaterAid Ghana to improving the quality of life of the people.

“Water is life, and without water, we cannot achieve any of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For WaterAid Ghana to support us to achieve universal access, we have nothing to offer her than to honour her,” he said.

He reaffirmed the Traditional Council’s commitment to collaborating with development partners, particularly WaterAid Ghana, to address WASH-related challenges, especially water availability, to enhance livelihoods.

“You are now one of my queenmothers and subjects, and I urge you to carry Bongo with you wherever you go and continue to advocate for more development for us,” he added.

Pognaba Christiana Nge, Paramount Queenmother of the Bongo Traditional Area, who performed the installation rites, noted that women and girls were the most affected in areas without potable water.

She pledged her support toward ensuring access to water at all levels.

At the same ceremony, Ms Lee Eun Mi, now known as Awinbono Salifu through naturalisation as a Ghanaian, Managing Director of Divine World Mission, was also installed as “Tinsongre Pognaba” (Queenmother of Community Development) for her contributions to community empowerment, especially for women and girls.

In addition to providing educational, agricultural infrastructure, and tools to enhance rural farming activities, Divine World Mission and its partners have also built three technical and vocational centres, training young girls and women in various trades, especially smock and cloth weaving.

The installation of the two queenmothers also signified their integration into the traditional area and would be key in decision-making processes, especially regarding issues in their field.

Coach Ibrahim Tanko rues Medeama painful stalemate against Asante Kotoko – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Medeama head coach Ibrahim Tanko has rued his outfit’s painful 2-2 stalemate against Asante Kotoko in the Ghana Premier League.

The Yellow and Mauve threw away their early two-goal lead as the much-anticipated clash ended in a draw at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

Medeama struck early, taking the lead inside five minutes through Derrick Fordjour, who volleyed home confidently after Kotoko failed to deal with a loose ball in the area. Their advantage doubled in the 18th minute when Yussif Mubarik converted a penalty, leaving the hosts stunned and the away supporters in full voice.

Kotoko struggled to settle in the first half but returned after the break with renewed determination. The pressure eventually paid off in the 69th minute when Peter Amidu Acquah reacted sharply inside the box to power the ball into the net and give his side belief.

The Porcupine Warriors pressed relentlessly in search of a leveller, and their persistence was rewarded deep into stoppage time. Captain Samba O’Neil rose above everyone to head home a dramatic equaliser in the 95th minute, sending the home crowd into loud celebration.

“Throwing away our two-goal lead is really painful. This is football so we have to go and work on our mistakes” he said.

Medeama are currently second on the Ghana Premier League, but are tied on points with log leaders Aduana FC (23 points).

Daddy Lumba’s Family Head, Papa Shee Clash Over Funeral Date

0

Papa Shee and Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu

A fresh dispute has erupted within the family of the late highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, as a heated disagreement between Family Head Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu and Evangelist Papa Shee has thrown funeral preparations into yet another round of controversy.

Appearing on UTV’s United on Saturday night, the two men clashed over which date should be considered the legitimate and final arrangement for the late musician’s burial.

Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu insisted that the funeral will be held on December 13, a date he says was agreed upon in consultation with Manhyia Palace.

“The funeral will come on December 13,” he declared emphatically.

But Evangelist Papa Shee—who claims to represent Daddy Lumba’s senior sister, Ernestina Akosua Fosu, and a faction of the extended family—vehemently rejected the December 13 date.

He insisted that his side of the family preferred March 14, marking the second time they have demanded a change after earlier dismissing a proposed December 6 date.

According to Papa Shee, several issues make the December date unacceptable, including, family members needing clarity on what exactly caused Lumba’s death, one of the late musician’s children writing exams and another child allegedly lacking the necessary travel documents to come for the burial.

“We won’t allow the December 13 date,” Papa Shee stressed, adding that certain family concerns had not been addressed.

Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu dismissed Papa Shee’s concerns, stating firmly that an autopsy had already been conducted. He invited Papa Shee and his associates to bring a medical expert of their choice to verify the results if they doubted the findings.

He further argued that the delays in burying the music icon were being caused by Papa Shee and a woman he accused of stirring unnecessary conflict within the family.

“I aim to get Lumba buried. All these delays are coming from Papa Shee and the lady causing the problems,” he said.

On the matter of Lumba’s children, the family head maintained that they were fully aware of the arrangements and were making the necessary preparations to attend.

Their confrontation comes on the heels of a Kumasi High Court judgement ordering the family head to recognise both Akosua Serwaa and Priscilla Ofori, as wives of the late musician, and allow them perform widowhood rites.

The ruling followed a legal challenge by Akosua Serwaa, who had sought to be acknowledged as the sole wife of the late Daddy Lumba.

Daddy Lumba’s passing has drawn intense public attention, given his towering presence in Ghana’s music history. Yet, the prolonged disputes over funeral arrangements have left fans frustrated and confused.

While Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu maintains that December 13, is final, Papa Shee’s faction appears determined to resist the date—raising questions about whether another standoff is looming.

For now, the nation waits for clarity as the late highlife icon’s family struggles to settle on a unified path to honour his memory.

Fidelity, Akuna Empower Creative Entrepreneurs

Beneficiaries of the Masterclass

Fidelity Bank Ghana, through its Orange Inspire initiative, has partnered with Akuna Pod to host a Creators’ Economy Masterclass under the theme “Turning Creativity into Currency.”

The session brought together emerging creatives and entrepreneurs at the Akuna Group headquarters in Labone in Accra for a practical learning experience focused on helping creators build sustainable, financially sound businesses.

The masterclass forms part of Fidelity’s growing commitment to supporting Ghana’s creative sector with the knowledge, tools and advisory services needed to unlock economic value from creative work.

The event featured beneficiaries of the Orange Inspire initiative alongside members of the Akuna creative community.

Kwame Abrokwa, Senior Sustainable Finance Manager at Fidelity Bank, described the event as part of a renewed, data-driven commitment by the bank to treat creativity as a catalyst for national development.

“At Fidelity Bank, we have long believed that creativity is a catalyst for development. Yet we also recognise that for many creatives, the path to sustainability and financial growth is not always straightforward. It became clear that supporting creatives requires more than appreciation; it requires strategy, partnership and consistency,” Mr. Abrokwa stated.

He emphasised that the collaboration with Akuna Group is designed to provide the “foundational tools” needed to build bankable brands.

“We are actively working toward a future where creatives have a clear seat at the table, where their businesses can access the same opportunities, respect and financial structures afforded to more traditional sectors,” he added.

The session operated on the premise that creativity has intrinsic value that must be unlocked through structure. To demystify the business side of art, the masterclass featured expert sessions tailored to the unique needs of the creator economy.

Albert Francis Swanzy, one of the experts, guided participants through the nuances of financial management, sharing critical insights on how creators can structure their brands to maximize profits, manage cash flow and position themselves to be “investor-ready,” shifting the mindset from gig economy workers to business owners.

Legal practitioner, Evelyn Bediakoh-Adu, tackled the often-overlooked bedrock of the creative industry, intellectual property rights. Her presentation underscored how protecting creative assets is essential for monetisation and long-term value creation.

Mariam Kaleem A-Buahin, Chief Operating Officer of Akuna Group, reinforced the necessity of a supportive infrastructure, outlining Akuna’s role in driving capacity building and providing both physical and digital infrastructure across Africa.

“Everything we do here is to enable and to ensure that everyone who believes they are creative can find a place for themselves,” Ms. A-Buahin said.

She highlighted the Akuna Wallet as a tool for financial inclusion that allows creators to receive payments globally and detailed the group’s investment in physical studios across Ghana, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.

“At the end of the day, creators are entrepreneurs,” she reminded the audience, and added, “You just need an ecosystem around you to take you to the next level. And that next level is where we want to come in to be that intersection of what your next level looks like.”

Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Dismiss Afenyo Markins’ Claim of Disappointment in President Mahama

0

The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has rejected claims made in Parliament alleging that its members are disappointed in President John Dramani Mahama for not abolishing import duties on spare parts in the 2026 Budget.

The remarks were made by the Minority Leader, Hon. Afenyo Markins, during parliamentary deliberations on November 25, 2025, where he suggested that the spare parts community felt let down by the government.

However, in a press release signed by Mr. Henry Okyere, Chairman of the Association, the group dismissed the comments as “inaccurate, misleading, and not representative of the Association’s views.” The leadership emphasized that at no point has the Association expressed disappointment in the President.

According to the Association, while the long-standing call for the abolition of import duties remains an important advocacy issue, the sector has acknowledged and appreciated several significant policy measures implemented by the government in recent months. These, it noted, have already started easing operational challenges faced by traders.

Key among these measures are the appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, the removal of COVID-19-related taxes, the abolishment of the decoupling of the NHIL and GETFund levies, and the upward adjustment of the VAT threshold to GH¢750,000.

The Association explained that these interventions enhance price stability, reduce tax pressure on small and medium enterprises, and promote a more predictable trading environment.

“These are positive steps that directly benefit our members and show that the government is listening,” the statement read. “The reforms support a uniform VAT structure and will help curb distortions within the spare parts market.”

The Association further underscored that it remains committed to continuous dialogue with government to address broader industry concerns, including reducing the cost of spare parts, improving supply chain efficiency, and ensuring affordability for transport operators and vehicle users nationwide.

It also cautioned political actors, commentators, and sections of the public against misrepresenting its position or attempting to use the Association’s name to drive partisan narratives.

“The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association is non-partisan,” the statement stressed. “Our focus is on policies that support business growth and national development, not political point-scoring.”

The Association concluded by reaffirming its cooperation with government agencies and stakeholders as part of broader efforts to stabilize the spare parts market and contribute to economic recovery.

Ghana: When Gold Turns Toxic

0

Ghana’s recent economic turnaround, which began in 2024, has been celebrated as a success story, with government officials touting a stronger cedi, lower inflation, backed by rising gold exports and favourable commodity prices.

But beneath these positive headlines lies a troubling reality: much of the foundation is built on the rapid expansion of illegal gold mining, known locally as ‘Galamsey,’ which is causing severe and lasting damage to the nation’s environment and public health.

A Shift in Gold Production

From 2020 to 2024, large-scale mining companies accounted for about 69% of Ghana’s gold production. In a dramatic shift, small-scale miners overtook these industrial giants in 2025, accounting for 52% of national gold output between January and September. This is puzzling, as the number of legally registered small-scale miners has dropped; only 35 new licenses were issued in 2025, while 278 were revoked in the same year. Also, the technology used by legal small-scale miners hasn’t changed, raising questions about where the extra gold is coming from.

The Role of the GHANA GOLDBOD

In April 2025, the government launched the GHANA GOLDBOD, a new institution designed to buy and export gold from small-scale miners to boost foreign exchange and strengthen national reserves. Although $279 million was allocated to GoldBod in the 2025 Budget, the Finance Ministry had not disbursed these funds as of late October. Yet, GoldBod reports record gold purchases from small-scale sources. Between January and October 2025, GoldBod and its predecessor, the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), had purchased about 81.719 tonnes of gold.

For comparison, under the Bank of Ghana’s Gold Purchase Programme (2022–2024), average annual purchases were 19.6 tonnes. The BoG programme essentially performed the same function as GoldBod, but with strict traceability and sourcing only from licensed aggregators vetted through due diligence. GoldBod lacks such safeguards.

So, what explains this surge in gold purchases this year? The only logical explanation is that much of this gold is coming from illegal mining operations. This raises concerns about the adequacy of government funding to combat illegal mining. In 2025 and 2026 budgets, a paltry GH¢50m and GH¢150 million were allocated respectively for the fight against this menace.

A Surge in Illegal Mining

Evidence of illegal mining is mounting. In June 2025, the Minister for Transport revealed that over 200 excavators (heavy machinery not used by artisanal miners) were entering Ghana daily through Tema Port, with nearly 3,000 more expected by year’s end. As these imports rise, so does small-scale gold production, even as the number of licensed small-scale miners falls. This is a clear indication that small scale miners (including the illegal ones) are resorting to the use of industrial-scale type of machinery in their operations.

Environmental and Public Health Crisis

The consequences are dire. While the government celebrates increased gold exports and benefitting from favourable gold prices, Ghana’s environment is suffering. In June 2025, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources reported that turbidity levels in major water bodies had reached alarming levels of between 5,000 and 12,000 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), far higher than acceptable threshold. Many cities and towns are now without clean drinking water because their main sources have been contaminated or shut down due to pollution from Galamsey activities.

No Traceability, No Accountability

Perhaps most concerning is that the GoldBod does not seem to have the traceability capacity yet for the gold it purchases. Without this technology, it risks legitimising illegal gold, and could be seen as effectively creating a state-sanctioned pathway for laundering Galamsey output. The economic gains being celebrated are, in reality, financed by the destruction of forests, rivers, rising public health crisis, and the country’s long-term development prospects.

A Call for Action

Behind every positive economic indicator lies a growing crisis: water insecurity, rising health risks, deforestation, and a shrinking future for sustainable development. Ghana risks sacrificing long-term sustainability for short-term economic gains. As the nation celebrates a stronger currency (which is not sustainable) and improved macroeconomic indicators, it must also reckon with the true cost: poisoned rivers, devastated forests, emboldened criminal networks, and the erosion of national well-being.

The choices are clear and urgent. Will Ghana continue down this destructive path, or will it choose to protect its environment and future generations? The time to act is now.

Speaking in an interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus revealed that his father had always hoped he would become a lawyer. However, after failing to gain admission to study law, he opted for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt—where he eventually discovered his flair for skit making.

He recalled that his father was deeply disappointed when he first learnt that his son had ventured into comedy.

“After I graduated, my dad never knew I was a comedian because I was hiding it,” Sabinus said. “One year after school, he started seeing me on comedy show posters. My sisters confirmed it to him. He was very furious. He said, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’”

According to him, the early days of skit making came with financial struggles, which further fuelled his father’s disapproval.

Sabinus added that things eventually changed when he began earning well from comedy and started gifting money to his father.

With his father’s full blessing now behind him, Sabinus has grown into one of Nigeria’s most recognisable and successful skit makers.

Bawumia stood up for NPP in 2012 election petition when others were running away – Otchere Baafi

0

The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Otchere Baafi, has praised former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) most dependable figure, recalling his defining role during the 2012 election petition.

Addressing NPP delegates in Koforidua, Otchere Baafi said Dr Bawumia displayed exceptional courage and loyalty at a time when, according to him, many senior party members were reluctant to step forward.

He recounted that during the Supreme Court proceedings, Dr Bawumia served as the party’s star witness and vigorously defended the NPP’s case “when all the men in the NPP ran away,” earning admiration across the party.

“Those who were there will remember. It was Dr Bawumia who stood in the dock, faced the tough questions, and defended the NPP with boldness and clarity. That is the type of leadership we need now,” Otchere Baafi emphasised.

He argued that Dr Bawumia’s performance during the petition marked a turning point in his political career and solidified his image as one of the party’s most reliable leaders.

According to him, the former Vice President has since remained steadfast in his commitment to the party, contributing to policy development and serving in various capacities.

Otchere Baafi urged delegates to reward this loyalty by endorsing Dr Bawumia in the upcoming 31 January 2026 presidential primary, insisting he is the most experienced and marketable candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election.

“Someone who stood for us in our most difficult times will surely stand for us again when it matters most. Dr Bawumia is the backbone we can trust,” he added.

He also called for unity within the party, stressing that only a united front behind a credible candidate can return the NPP to power.

10 petitioners appeal to Mahama to remove Special Prosecutor, Jean Mensa and 2 deputies

0

The Office of the President has received 10 separate petitions calling for the removal of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng and Chairperson of the Electoral Commission Jean Mensa and her two deputies.

The petitions, according to Citi News sources, were submitted by private citizens alleging various forms of misconduct.

The Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, in the petitions, is accused of incompetence and abuse of office.

The petitions are currently before the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.

Under Section 16 of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act 2017 (Act 959), any petition for the removal of the Special Prosecutor must be evaluated to determine whether it meets the constitutional threshold for further action.

The Act also provides that

1. A person seeking the removal of the Special Prosecutor shall submit a petition to the President.
2. Upon receiving a petition, the President is required, within seven days, to refer it to the Chief Justice, who must, in turn, within 30 days, determine whether a prima facie case has been established.
3. If a prima facie case is found, the Chief Justice must, within 14 days, constitute a three-member committee comprising: A chairperson who is a Justice of the Supreme Court; A lawyer of at least 15 years’ standing at the Bar; and one other person with expertise in investigations.
4. The Committee is then mandated to investigate the matter within 90 days and submit its recommendations to the President through the Chief Justice.
5. The President is bound to act in accordance with the Committee’s recommendations.

Kissi Agyebeng has served as Special Prosecutor since 2021, succeeding Martin Amidu, Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor.

Opinions remain divided on the effectiveness of the Office. While some argue that the OSP has introduced a necessary layer of accountability in public life, others contend that the institution has fallen short of its mandate.

For example, in the Ofori-Atta extradition case, Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu accused Agyebeng of “extreme incompetence” for allowing former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to leave Ghana while under investigation, suggesting this inaction undermines the credibility of the OSP.

Also, Lawyer Kweku Paintsil has recently criticized the OSP’s frequent press briefings, calling them “highly unprofessional” and accusing the Special Prosecutor of effectively conducting trials in the court of public opinion rather than through the formal legal process.

In 2023, an Accra High Court judge rebuked the OSP, stating that by making certain claims in its affidavits, the office acted as if it had appellate jurisdiction over the court, a “clear abuse of power,” according to the judge.

Also, Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu described Agyebeng as “pathologically dishonest” and “unfit” for his role, specifically criticizing his public statements about the Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) case.

The petitions for the removal of the Chairperson Jean Mensa and her two deputies, Eric Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey, centered on how the commission was run and the need for accountability at the highest levels.

Child Online Africa demands urgent safeguards on SHS tablets after porn exposure report

0

Child Online Africa has raised serious concerns after the Education Minister’s revelation that some Senior High School students have accessed pornography on government-issued tablets, highlighting risks linked to delays in activating promised content restrictions.

In a statement signed by the Executive Director, Awo Aidam Amenyah, the organisation emphasised that while every child has the right to learn through digital tools, they also have the right to be protected from harmful online content.

The group called on the government, industry, schools, teachers, parents, and students to take immediate action to safeguard digital learning.

Child Online Africa urged the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, Ministry of Communication and Digital Innovations, National Communications Authority, and Data Protection Commission to roll out mandatory over-the-air updates within 30–45 days on all distributed tablets. The updates, according to the group should include content filters blocking adult sites, gambling platforms, and explicit violence, as well as enforced Safe Search and YouTube Restricted Mode, alongside time-management and app-restriction controls.

The organisation also recommended establishing a National Education Digital Safeguarding Taskforce and incorporating “Safety by Design” and “Privacy by Design” principles in all future EdTech procurement.

Industry stakeholders—including suppliers, manufacturers, and telecom companies—were asked to provide filtering subscriptions and technical support at no extra cost. Schools and teachers were urged to restrict tablet use to supervised sessions until content restrictions are active, deliver urgent online-safety lessons, and appoint a Digital Safeguarding Lead in every school. Also,  students were advised to use devices responsibly, while parents were encouraged to engage in open conversations about digital use.

Child Online Africa stressed that safe digital access is inseparable from the right to education and called for swift technical interventions and collaboration across all sectors to ensure government-issued tablets become secure learning tools.

Why BoG, GAB must scale up surveillance

0

Ethics have been established as very important to every profession.

This is because they guide the behaviour of professionals in a particular field to deliver their services.

There is no doubt that the corporate world would have been extremely chaotic without ethics.

This article places a special focus on the banking sector of Ghana’s economy.

Key banking disciplines include ethics, compliance, risk management, customer service, continuous learning, teamwork, and financial literacy.

But this article pays particular attention to ethical breaches.

Recently, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, made a very ‘blowing’ remark about unethical behaviour among bank workers.

He said that while ethics is the backbone of trust, Ghana’s banking sector continues to face significant challenges in upholding these standards.

Unethical practices, he said, remain widespread, with staff-related fraud on the rise.

He also referred to the 2024 Bank of Ghana Fraud Report, which reveals a 5% rise in reported fraud cases, with a total value at risk increasing by 13% to approximately GH¢99 million.

The report highlights a surge in forgery, document manipulation, and identity theft.

Notably, there was a significant increase in staff-involved fraud and fraudulent activities within the Payment Service Providers (PSP) sector, raising serious concerns about internal controls and ethical compliance across the industry.

This development ought to be a concern for all and sundry, especially as it is coming from the regulator.

None should sit on the fences and assume that it doesn’t concern them; it actually concerns everybody, whether you hold accounts with a bank or not.

Also, the impression it creates about Ghana’s financial sector in the minds of expat investors could be detrimental to the financial sector.

Imagine that a foreign business wants to invest a huge money in any of the local banks but receives reports of an increasing rate of bank fraud and unethical behaviour, this is not a good account of the banks.

To address this matter, the Bank of Ghana and the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB) Ghana have formed a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening ethical standards and professionalism among banking professionals in Ghana – an initiative aimed at restoring public trust, curbing fraud, and fostering a sustainable banking culture.

As a key outcome of this collaboration, the CIB Ghana, in collaboration with the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB), has developed the Ghana Banking Code of Ethics and Business Conduct for banks in Ghana, as well as an E-learning Programme to promote best banking practices and high ethical standards within the banking sector.

The BoG issued other measures, including the introduction of Sustainable Banking Principles, directives on consumer protection, enhanced governance frameworks, and stricter oversight of digital lending and market conduct.

Beyond these measures, it is my view that further stricter measures, including naming and shaming of the bank’s staff engaged in these practices, should be introduced by the regulator and the other bodies, given that Ghanaians recently went through a very painful financial sector cleanup and also the domestic debt restructuring.

If bank workers realise that their pictures and identities will be put out for the reason of unethical practices, they will sit and live up to the task.

There could be an argument that the naming and shaming will be unbearable for them, and also it will flout the audi alteram partem principle, which says that “let the other side be heard as well”.

Yes, it is a fundamental principle that whoever has been accused of wrongdoing should be given the opportunity to be heard; it has its roots in the Holy writings.

But the point is, by the time a decision is taken to name and shame the culprits, they would have been issued queries to explain themselves.

Failure to provide a reasonable justification for their actions should lead to severe punishment.

The financial sector is the heartbeat of the economy; whenever the heart stops beating for even a minute, a person is on his or her way to the grave.

Meaning, anything untoward that happens in the financial sector could cripple people for life; some can even lose their lives on account of losing their lifetime investments.

We do not want that to happen, well, let me say I do not want that to happen again.

It is recalled that many customers lost money during the banking sector cleanup exercise and the domestic debt exchange programme.

I am not sure anybody would want to experience another setback in the financial sector again; therefore, any unethical behaviour of bank workers should be checked with alacrity, like the way a patient with a very low heartbeat will be attended to, in an expedited manner, by doctors.

Again, for the banks to deal with the unethical behaviours, there ought to be three main key strategies: Clear Policies, which require the creation of a conflict-of-interest policy and integrate it into employee training; Create an Ethics Committee which establishes a dedicated team to review and resolve conflicts fairly; and Transparent Reporting which encourages employees to disclose potential conflicts and address them proactively.

For instance, the Standard Bank Group, which says that it is “committed to establishing a culture of integrity, transparency, openness and compliance, in accordance with our Group Values and Code of Ethics”, tells customers that if you suspect any unethical behaviour (including theft, fraud or corruption) by any of their employees, clients or suppliers, it should be reported immediately to their independent whistleblowing reporting channel.

Given the threat that the increasing rate of unethical behaviour of bank workers poses to the financial sector, the Bank of Ghana, Ghana Association of Bankers (GAB), and Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB) Ghana must do more than they are doing to ensure that the situation is nipped in the bud.

Papa Shee has formed gang, deliberately causing disruptions – Abusuapanin

Head of the Fosuh family, Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu, has accused gospel musician Papa Shee of leading a group that he believes is intentionally disrupting preparations surrounding the funeral arrangements of the late Daddy Lumba.

Speaking in a discussion on United Showbiz on November 30, 2025, Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu expressed frustration over what he described as a deliberate attempt by Papa Shee and his associates to interfere with processes that should be left to the family and medical professionals.

According to him, the claims from Papa Shee’s camp concerning the autopsy and the presence of Daddy Lumba’s children are misleading and unnecessary.

“I’ve seen that Papa Shee has formed his gang that is deliberately trying to disrupt everything we do. I don’t know what Lumba did to them,” he said.

Addressing allegations surrounding the autopsy, the Abusuapanyin explained that Daddy Lumba’s children were present during the procedure, in line with standard practice.

Daddy Lumba’s Funeral: Abusuapanin justifies GH¢30,000 withdrawal from bank account

“They said Daddy Lumba’s children were there while the autopsy was being done. The children were by their father for the autopsy to be done; we weren’t there and it’s not like the children who operated him. A special doctor did everything so why won’t they accept it?” he stated.

He further questioned Papa Shee’s motive for continually challenging the family and hindering their funeral plans.

“What has Lumba done to you? Please, allow us to bury him in peace and it will cost us nothing,” he appealed.

He noted that the distribution of the late musician’s properties is a legal matter to be handled by his lawyers and immediate family, not outsiders.

“His lawyers would just share his properties to his children, I won’t get anything and same as you. You’re also not a family member so why are you bothering Lumba’s body and not allowing us to ahead with the funeral,” he added.

Kevin-Prince Boateng starred for the Black Stars at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Kevin-Prince Boateng starred for the Black Stars at the 2010 FIFA World Cup

Former Black Stars attacker, Kevin-Prince Boateng has disclosed that his wife transformed his life and led him to become a Christian.

According to him, his wife, whose name he did not mention, is a staunch Christian who convinced him to take his faith seriously.

Speaking on the Unscripted podcast, the former Barcelona attacker indicated that his wife persuaded him to attend church services, which he did despite being discouraged by others.

Performance of Ghanaian Players Abroad wrap-up: Kudus stunner vs Fulham, Forson scores on first start

“My wife says, ‘You want to come to church?’ She prayed to God, saying, ‘You want me to help this man, I will help him.’ She never saw me as her husband or anything. She just knew God brought me into her life so she could help me go through all my trauma and everything. Never in my life had I been to church. So many voices told me, ‘Don’t go. Don’t worry about that. Why are you going? Just tell her you’re sick, you can’t come, don’t go.’

“And my wife went by herself because she said, ‘We can’t go in together, we’re not a couple.’ So I was standing in front of the church, looking at these people with Bibles going inside. I was like, ‘What am I doing here, man?’ She did it on purpose because she wanted me to go in there for Christ, not for her. You feel out of place. I put on a turtleneck so they wouldn’t see my tattoos,” he narrated.

Boateng further noted that he felt embarrassed when he first entered the church premises, but as time went on, he adjusted.

The ex-AC Milan forward said he felt the presence of the Spirit and wept, eventually giving his life to Christ.

“I was kind of ashamed of that. She’s like, ‘Oh, it’s your first time?’ It was my first time ever in church. These people had their hands up singing to Jesus. I looked at them and said, ‘What’s wrong with these people?’ After five minutes, I don’t know what happened. I stood up, lifted my hands, and started crying in that church.”

“There was another real man there crying, looking at me. We nodded our heads. I’m like, ‘Okay, it’s okay to cry here.’ I don’t know, the Spirit hit me with so much conviction and I felt so sorry. And that’s the moment where I said, ‘I want to give you my life, man. I want to give you my life,’” he said.

Rivalry Is Killing Ghana’s Industry – Reggie Rockstone

0

Hiplife grandpapa, Reggie Rockstone, has issued a stark warning about what he describes as a crippling wave of unnecessary rivalries tearing through Ghana’s music industry.

Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on November 272025, the genre pioneer said years of feuds, fractured alliances, and ego battles have left the industry too divided to command respect—especially when engaging corporate bodies.

“Let me begin with my own people. We ourselves are so divided that we don’t have a united front to even go sit with these folks. We are so fragmented. Every day, you hear that this person and that person are beefing,” he lamented.

Rockstone didn’t spare fans either, accusing them of stoking tensions and fuelling conflicts that cripple collaboration.

“Everybody, including the fans who are the major people fuelling these feuds, is to blame,” he charged.

When asked whether he had made attempts to bridge the rifts, the Hiplife legend said he has been working tirelessly—and quietly—to bring artistes together.

“Almost everybody. I have always been working behind the scenes to bring people together,” he revealed.

For him, the path to unity is clear: education, awareness, and a shared commitment to collective progress.

“We need to let them know that we are all in this together. That if I eat, you will also eat.”

Rockstone also called on the government to pay serious attention to youth development, while urging musicians to clean up their own house.

“To the government, pay attention to the youth. And in the same breath, I’m talking to my own people saying, get your act together,” he pressed.

Dialogue key to addressing fasting and worship rules in schools

0

The General Secretary of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), Apostle Emmanuel Okuley, has urged calm and dialogue in the ongoing debate over religious rights in schools, stressing that issues such as fasting among underage students must be handled with caution and parental involvement.

His remarks follow a Supreme Court directive ordering Wesley Girls’ Senior High School to respond to a suit filed by private legal practitioner Shafic Osman, who alleges that the school restricts Muslim students from practising certain aspects of their faith. The development has reignited national discussion on how schools should balance religious diversity with student welfare and institutional rules.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, November 29, Apostle Okuley stressed that schools have a responsibility to protect students’ well-being, especially since most second-cycle students are minors.

He explained that the long-standing restrictions on fasting in some schools were not designed to target Muslim students but were originally instituted to safeguard the health of Christian students, particularly those from Pentecostal and charismatic backgrounds who frequently observe prolonged fasts.

Apostle Okuley further called for constructive dialogue between parents and mission school authorities, especially in schools where large numbers of students may belong to different faiths.

“The fasting bit, they are underage. They are not adults who are by themselves. The constitutional rule says that as to the fact that they are underage, they must be under guidance. The rule wasn’t made even for non-Christians, they instituted the rule for Christians because a lot of Pentecostal and charismatic churches do fast more than what our brothers in Islam do.

“We will prefer having a note from parents that please allow my ward to do the fast, I take responsibility for any outcome, that way the school is covered. I think we should negotiate this. For example, if you have 500 out of 1500 students being of a different religious persuasion being in the mission school, the parents of that religion could in a nice way negotiate with the mission authorities. It shouldn’t be the case that because I step into an islamic school, the entire rules should change,” he said.

GIFF holds 28th AGM ON digital transformation in freight forwarding

0

The Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) has held its 28th Annual General Meeting in Koforidua, focusing on the rapid evolution of technology in the logistics and freight forwarding industry.

This year’s AGM was held under the theme “Digital Transformation in Freight Forwarding: Leveraging Technology for Enhanced Service Delivery.”

Delivering a key note address, the Commissioner of the Customs Division of the GRA, Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan, lauded GIFF for its cooperation, professionalism and consistent advocacy, which he said have contributed immensely to customs transformation and a more conducive trading environment.

He urged GIFF members to fully support the government’s 24-hour economic policy, which has already taken root at Ghana’s ports.
“By aligning your services with this policy, we can jointly reduce congestion, enhance competitiveness and position Ghana as a preferred trade and logistics hub within the subregion,” he said.

Brigadier General Annan stressed that revenue mobilization remains critical to national development and highlighted the importance of compliance in declarations and documentation.

He called on freight forwarders to uphold the highest levels of professionalism and integrity as systems continue to digitize.
“Digital transformation is no longer optional; it is the backbone of modern trade,” he underscored.

The President of GIFF and Vice President of FIATA, Mr. Stephen Adojatcher, announced that the next 12 months will mark a period of significant digital transformation, one he described as a strategic necessity rather than a choice.

He noted that emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, digital documentation, automated customs processes, and predictive analytics will soon become standard tools for freight forwarders.
“Our operational models must evolve to meet the expectations of clients who demand speed, transparency and accuracy,” he emphasized.

Mr. Adojatcher reaffirmed GIFF’s commitment to advocating for a harmonized national logistics digitization ecosystem, one that eliminates duplicated processes, minimizes system inefficiencies, and strengthens revenue assurance.

He further revealed that the GIFF Research Hub will be revitalized to produce structured research and support evidence-based advocacy. The Hub will collaborate closely with academia, Customs, port authorities, and international partners to improve the national clearance system.

“The Hub will become the beating heart of our forward movement, the place where ideas are tested, problems diagnosed, and solutions scientifically crafted,” he stated.

The AGM also featured solidarity messages from key stakeholders, including the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Ghana Link Network Services, and sister associations such astheCustoms House Brokers Association of Ghanaand theAssociation of Customs House Agents Ghana.

Some NDC MPs come to Parliament with Uber – Afenyo-Markin alleges

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has alleged that a number of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament are facing financial hardships, with some reportedly relying on ride-hailing services such as Uber to make it to parliamentary sittings.

Speaking during an interview on Peace FM on November 28, 2025, the Effutu MP claimed that several NDC legislators, particularly those on the backbench and without appointments to public boards, were under economic strain.

‘Whoever thought Mahama could be president again? – Afenyo-Markin’s emotional message to the NPP

Afenyo-Markin stated that MPs from both sides of the House endure challenges but insisted that the situation was more pronounced among their colleagues in the NDC.

“Our brothers in the NDC, we are in Parliament with them and they are suffering. Some of them come to Parliament with Uber. Some of them are on the backbench and they are not on any board,” he said.

He noted that despite these challenges, NDC MPs exhibit patience and discipline, prioritising the long-term interest of their party.

“They are suffering but they have a common understanding that they have to take time for the party,” he added.

Using the NDC’s example, Afenyo-Markin urged members of the opposition the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to exercise similar restraint and remain committed to party unity, even in difficult times.

According to him, political parties operate on long-term strategies and MPs and supporters alike must be willing to endure temporary hardship for wider organisational goals.

Ghana must cut over US$2billion food import bill to secure its future – Ketu North MCE

0

Martin Amenaki, Municipal Chief Executive of Ketu North, has said Ghana’s long-term food security and economic independence hinge on reducing the more than US$2 billion spent annually on food imports.

He warned that the growing preference for imported rice, poultry, and processed foods often driven by perceptions of prestige continues to undermine demand for high-quality local produce.

Amenaki made these remarks during the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration of the Ketu North Municipal Assembly, held at a colourful ceremony at the Dekpor M/A Basic School.

The event renewed calls for stronger commitment to local food production under the theme: “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future.”

“This trend discourages investment, lowers farm-gate prices, and weakens our agricultural base,” he said.

“To change this, we must embrace consumer patriotism backed by policies that guarantee reliable markets for our farmers.”

He highlighted key government interventions designed to strengthen food systems, including the Feed Ghana and Feed the Industry initiatives, enhanced local procurement under the School Feeding Programme, institutional farming in senior high schools, rehabilitation of the Weta Irrigation Scheme, expanded mechanisation services, establishment of Farmers’ Service Centres, modernised rice-milling facilities, and the ongoing Nkoko Nketenkete poultry value-chain project.

Amenaki called on individuals, businesses, and institutions to partner with the Assembly to build a more robust agricultural economy, describing farmers as “the backbone of the municipality whose hard work continues to sustain livelihoods.”

Municipal Director of Agriculture, Believer Avenorkadzi, commended farmers for their resilience despite erratic rainfall, high input prices, logistical constraints, and market challenges.

Reflecting on the national theme, he explained: “‘Eat Ghana’ urges us to value local produce.

‘Feed Ghana’ calls on us to raise production and quality. ‘Secure the Future’ challenges us to build a resilient, technology-driven agricultural system that can support generations to come.”

Avenorkadzi noted that Ketu North continues to contribute significantly to national food production, with staples such as cassava, rice, maize, vegetables, and legumes sustaining thousands of households.

Livestock and poultry production also remain vital for youth employment and processing opportunities.

He outlined interventions by the Department of Agriculture, including extension services, regular field visits, training on good agronomic practices, fertilizer use, pest management, and post-harvest handling.

Support has also included the distribution of 1,400 bags of fertilizer, over 1,000 improved rice seeds, improved cassava planting materials, and various agrochemicals.

Other initiatives involve partnerships with the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP), Financial Inclusion for Last Mile Actors (FILMA), and Hopeline Institute to strengthen agribusiness skills, financial inclusion, and safe agrochemical usage.

Under the Feed Ghana Programme, 195 Farmer-Based Organisations have been validated, and 4,451 farmers digitally registered to enhance planning and transparency.

Despite these gains, Avenorkadzi highlighted challenges such as inadequate extension personnel, limited storage and processing facilities, insufficient mechanisation, flooding in parts of the Weta Irrigation Scheme, and rising input costs.

He called for expanded irrigation, improved post-harvest systems, greater youth participation in mechanised farming, and stronger promotion of local food consumption.

The celebration concluded with the presentation of awards to distinguished farmers.

Wonder Pomevor was named Overall Best Farmer, receiving a tricycle and cutlasses.

Other awardees received items including a motorbike, television set, wheelbarrows, Wellington boots, and a knapsack sprayer.

Ashanti Surge Boosts Adutwum’s Flagbearer Bid

0

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum

Former Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum says growing momentum from the Ashanti Region has significantly strengthened his bid to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as its next flagbearer, declaring that the groundswell of support gives him a strong chance of winning the internal contest and the general election.

Speaking in an interview with the DAILY GUIDE, Dr. Adutwum disclosed that he has successfully completed the first phase of his Ashanti regional tour, covering 20 out of the region’s 47 constituencies.

According to him, the reception so far has been overwhelming, marked by spontaneous endorsements, excitement and shifting loyalties among party delegates and supporters.

“Momentum is clearly building. You see the excitement on the faces of the people when you share your message with them. Some walk up to you to say they are now convinced, others say they support your campaign, and some admit they are still confused. But every constituency we leave, the response is strong,” he said.

Dr. Adutwum expressed firm confidence that the Ashanti surge could reshape the dynamics of the race, saying, “With Ashanti momentum building, I can win this election. It may come as a shock to many, but other regions are already taking their cue from Ashanti. As Ashanti moves, you will see Ahafo, Bono and other regions follow.”

He argued that beyond the contest for flagbearership, delegates must focus on selecting a candidate with the strongest appeal for the national election.

Central to his case, he said, is the “home region advantage” and the broad identification many voters feel with his life story.

Drawing from his background as a teacher and son of a cocoa farmer, Dr. Adutwum said his personal journey resonates deeply with grassroots supporters.

“Teachers are excited about the possibility of one of their own leading Ghana. In the cocoa-growing areas, the people say, ‘for the first time, the son of a cocoa farmer may become President.’ That identity matters,” he noted.

He explained that his appeal also cuts across constituency lines in Kumasi, where many residents trace their roots to Bosomtwe and surrounding districts.

When he recounts growing up at Jachie, weaving baskets and selling them at the Kumasi Central Market, crowds often erupt with chants of “he is one of us.”

Dr. Adutwum added that his engagement with the youth during his tenure as Deputy Minister and Minister for Education continues to work in his favour, especially among former Senior High School (SHS) students who are now voters.

His proposal for free university education, he said, draws strong reactions in rural communities where families are struggling with life after free SHS.

Beyond the flagbearer race, he outlined a broader vision focused on poverty reduction through massive job creation, Information and Technology (IT)-driven growth, industrialisation and commercial agriculture.

He proposed the establishment of IT hubs across the country to absorb unemployed graduates into cybersecurity and global digital work.

“India has done it, South Korea has done it, and Ghana will do it,” he said, insisting that with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as the foundation, the country can reverse its economic fortunes.

Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers refute claims of disappointment over 2026 budget

The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has firmly rejected claims made in Parliament by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin that its members feel “disappointed” in President John Dramani Mahama for not abolishing import duties on spare parts in the 2026 Budget.

In a press release issued on Monday December 1, 2025, the Association described the statement made on November 25, 2025, as a misrepresentation of its views.

Reacting to the parliamentary comment, the Association stressed that although the long-standing request for the abolition of import duties on spare parts remains pending, its members are not disillusioned.

Abossey-Okai spare parts dealers back 14-day ultimatum to foreign retailers

“The Association wishes to state categorically that this assertion is inaccurate and misleading,” the executives declared in the statement.

To further clarify its stance, the Chairman, Henry Okyere, added, “We are not disappointed in President Mahama. The government’s recent economic measures have already brought significant relief to our members, and we acknowledge these efforts.”

The dealers noted that the appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, the removal of COVID-19 taxes, the abolishment of the decoupling of NHIL and GETFund levies and the increase in the VAT threshold to GH¢750,000 have together created a more predictable and uniform VAT environment for spare parts traders, thereby easing operational pressures.

According to the Association, these developments demonstrate the government’s commitment to supporting the spare parts industry and contribute to stabilising the cost of doing business at Abossey Okai.

“These developments are warmly welcomed,” the release noted.

The release was signed by Henry Okyere, Chairman, on behalf of the Association’s Executive Committee.

Beautiful spectacle in Akwatia as Chairman, Ama Sey unite behind Bawumia

Former MP Akwatia, Ama Sey Former MP Akwatia, Ama Sey

There was a beautiful spectacle in the Akwatia Constituency yesterday as party stalwarts and influential figures united to demonstrate strong support for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The occasion was Dr Bawumia’s campaign visit, part of his Eastern Regional tour, which brought together three key political figures in the constituency: the Constituency Chairman, Nana Yaw Addo; the parliamentary candidate in the recent by-election, Solomon Kwame Asimadu; and former MP for the area, Ama Sey.

These three individuals hold significant influence in Akwatia, and tensions are often perceived to be high among their loyal supporters. However, their joint presence for a common objective sent positive signals of unity within the party.

All three stalwarts joined constituents in welcoming Dr Bawumia and later addressed party members, rallying support for his bid.

Constituency Chairman Nana Yaw Addo, speaking on behalf of the constituents, assured Dr Bawumia of their unwavering support.

“Two years ago, we gave you nearly 68%. No one coerced us to vote for you. And now, when we look at your commitment, your message, and your hard work, I believe the 68% you had in 2023 will even increase to 86% by January 31. We will honour you,” the Chairman said.

“So here in Akwatia, we are determined to vote for you massively. Not only that, we want you to win and become President, so we are also determined to work very hard to ensure that.”

The parliamentary candidate for the recent Akwatia by-election, Solomon Kwame Asimadu, echoed the Chairman’s remarks, noting that the constituency would reciprocate the strong support Dr. Bawumia offered them during the by-election.

“On this journey you are embarking on, we know you will be victorious at the end of it by the grace of God,” he said.

“I am the latest victim in an election, and I know what it takes to go into an election, give your all, and still not win. Let me acknowledge the immense support Dr. Bawumia offered us during the recent by-election. He gave us all the support, but we just could not make it. So, I want to urge you all to continue supporting Dr. Bawumia as we have all resolved to.”

“Other candidates have been here, but we know what you bring on board. We have resolved to support you to lead the party to victory. We pray for God’s favour upon you so that you emerge victorious, with our support contributing to your success.”

Former Akwatia MP Ama Sey also lent her voice, declaring Dr. Bawumia the best person to lead the NPP.

“My brothers and sisters, the situation we are in requires that we continue to back Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” she said.

“Ghanaians normally do not like changes. When they are used to someone and you change the person, there is always a problem. Ghanaians want to see the one they know, assess him, and with time, accept him. So, I am appealing to all of you not to be deceived into making a change. Let us continue to support Dr. Bawumia.”

“Across the country, I have gone around with him, and I have to say that everywhere, people are calling for Dr Bawumia to be elected as our flagbearer so that Ghanaians will also listen to us.”

Golfers from clubs nationwide gathered at the Centre of the World Golf Club in Tema for the Golden Jubilee Swing, a tournament celebrating Mona Captan’s five decades in Ghanaian golf. The event recognized her status as the country’s most accomplished player and her contributions to the sport’s development.

Captan has competed in over 850 tournaments and won more than 600 trophies throughout a career spanning both local and international competitions. The tournament drew support from multiple sponsors, including Tema Women’s Hospital, Landers Group, Tang Palace Hotel, and Unilever.

Participants ranged from veteran players to younger golfers, creating what organizers described as a blend of generations competing together. Born to a Lebanese father and a Ghanaian mother from Keta in the Volta Region, Captan discovered golf in the mid 1970s after passing by Achimota Golf Club following a morning jog during her school days.

Competition categories included men’s and women’s divisions across multiple skill groups, plus senior categories for both genders. Winners were announced near Hole 18 following the day’s play.

At the closing ceremony, speakers including Prince Kofi Amoabeng and Leonard Kwaku Okyere of the Ghana Golf Association (GGA) paid tribute to Captan. They emphasized her role as mentor and leader, sharing how her influence shaped Ghana’s golfing community.

The event underscored Captan’s legacy beyond competitive success. She has spent years visiting schools, encouraging young girls to take up sports, sharing lessons on discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Tournament organizers noted her impact particularly on women’s participation in the sport.

The Golden Jubilee Swing served as both celebration and recognition of an athlete whose career has redefined possibilities for women in Ghanaian sports. The Centre of the World Golf Club, formerly known as Tema Country Golf Club, has been designated for transformation into a world class leisure resort capable of hosting Professional Golfers Association (PGA) certified tournaments.

‘The court should cite Papa Shee for contempt’ – Vida Adutwumwaa

Vida Adutwumwaa Boateng is a showbiz analyst and pundit Vida Adutwumwaa Boateng is a showbiz analyst and pundit

Entertainment pundit Vida Adutwumwaa Boateng has urged the courts to cite gospel musician Papa Shee for contempt following his recent comments on the legal dispute surrounding Daddy Lumba’s funeral.

Speaking on United Showbiz on November 30, 2025, Vida expressed strong displeasure over Papa Shee’s claim that lawyers for the opposing side were allegedly seen coming out of a judge’s chamber, a statement he made while reacting to the Kumasi High Court ruling that went against his preferred (Akosua Serwaa) side.

According to Vida, such comments amount to an attempt to discredit the court’s integrity.

“I can stand before God and say you’re a problem. Your understanding and interpretation are a problem. You went to court to say that you’ve heard that your opponent’s lawyers came out from the judge’s office. What are you trying to insinuate, she said.

Vida explained that legal expert Lawyer Fati had previously outlined the correct process for authenticating foreign documents in court, a process she claims the legal team of Lumba’s wife, whom Papa Shee strongly supports, failed to follow.

‘Controversies seem tailored to Delay Lumba’s funeral’ – Vida Adutwumwaa

“When we spoke to lawyer Fati, she took us through the process in which you can authenticate the document you brought from abroad.

“Your lawyer failed and that’s what you should be bold enough to tell him because all the four things you took to court, none were signed,” she stated.

Vida further added, “If you’re a lawyer, you should know the basic things you should do when you’re bringing some documents from abroad before the court would approve it.”

She emphasised that Papa Shee’s continuous attempts to question the credibility of the judge and the judicial process should not go unaddressed.

“You sit here and discredit the judge’s work. I wish the court would cite him contempt and give him penalty,” she added.

Doubts over IGP Yohuno’s post-retirement contract

0

There is growing uncertainty over the legitimacy of the purported two-year post-retirement contract of Christian Tetteh Yohuno, as Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Ghana Police Service.

A letter, widely circulated on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, allegedly signed by Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, announced Yohuno’s continued stay in office on the recommendation of the Police Council, chaired by Vice-President Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang. The Vice-President was out of the country when the letter surfaced.

However, several anomalies have raised suspicions that the document may be fake or even AI-generated. Dr Callistus Mahama is said to have denied issuing any letter granting a post-retirement contract to the IGP, who turns 60 on 27 December 2025, although some claim he has long since passed that age.

Observers noted spelling errors, including “Police” written as “Polce”, and questioned the letterhead, with Ghana’s Coat of Arms appearing unusually cloudy compared to official presidential correspondence.

The Secretary’s signature also appears inconsistent with previous documents, while the reference number, OPS/08/25/3756, bears a close resemblance to that used in Yohuno’s original appointment to replace Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

The situation has been compounded by the government’s silence on the matter. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, who signed the 13 March 2025 letter dismissing COP Dampare and appointing Yohuno, has not issued any statement regarding the post-retirement contract.

Similarly, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, who oversees the Police Service, has remained silent despite previously voicing concerns over the crime rate under Yohuno’s leadership.

At a press conference in Accra on 18 November 2025, Minister Mubarak reported that, as of July 2025, Ghana had recorded 628 armed robbery cases and 340 murders, compared to 1,219 robberies and 552 murders in 2024. Sounding rather unhappy with the current Police administration.

Meanwhile, officers at Police Headquarters expressed surprise at the absence of celebrations over the alleged contract. Some joked that the champagne and other drinks brought by well-wishers after the media blitz were taken home by the IGP himself.

Reports suggest that the media bombardment was preceded by lobbying, the distribution of money to selected journalists, and promises of funding for front-page coverage.

The Herald has also received reports of emergency meetings at the Presidency to trace the source of the letter. In one meeting attended by Yohuno, he was reportedly instructed to ensure the letter was withdrawn.

President John Dramani Mahama is understood to be opposed to post-retirement contracts for public servants. According to insiders, he remains firm on his earlier statements in Parliament and by Dr Callistus Mahama that granting such contracts would undermine his reputation for keeping promises.

Yohuno, who previously served as Deputy IGP under Dampare during the Akufo-Addo administration, was appointed IGP under the 1992 Constitution’s Articles 91 and 202, in consultation with the Council of State.

The original appointment, announced by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, highlighted Yohuno’s four-decade-long career in the police service and his expected role in modernising the force, improving public trust, and enhancing national security.

Despite his experience, analysts and security experts note that significant improvements are still required. Regional police commands largely remain as deployed by Dampare, while violent crimes continue to rise.

In response, the government has introduced a Gun Amnesty, described by Minister Mubarak as a “bold and compassionate initiative” to reduce illicit firearms and improve public safety.

“The statistics are not looking good at all. In 2024, there were 1,219 reported robbery cases and 552 murder cases. As of July this year, the statistics from the Criminal Investigation Department and the Ghana Police show that half of the year alone, we have already had 628 cases of armed robbery and 340 murder cases respectively,” he said.

“All of these people used violent means to achieve this, and the use of illicit arms,” he added.

This will be a decisive step towards reducing the country’s rising crime rate. The government, after extensive consultations with the Ghana Police Service, the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, security agencies, traditional leaders, religious organisations, and civil society groups, has announced a Gun Amnesty.

Described by the Minister as a “bold and compassionate initiative,” the amnesty aims to reduce the number of illicit firearms in the country and enhance public safety.

According to the Minister, the initiative will provide an opportunity for individuals in possession of illicit firearms to surrender them without facing any prosecution, in a bid to prevent further violent crimes.

Minister Mubarak stressed the importance of community cooperation in making the initiative a success, urging citizens to participate actively and help create a safer Ghana for all.

The Ministry is also moving to restrict the use of arms during cultural celebrations, announcing plans to engage traditional authorities in training to enforce a firearms ban during festivals.

As the debate over Yohuno’s alleged post-retirement contract continues, the government has yet to issue an official clarification, leaving the public and the police service in suspense.

Pep Guardiola is eager to sign Semenyo from Bournemouth Pep Guardiola is eager to sign Semenyo from Bournemouth

Premier League giants Manchester City are plotting to sign Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo in the winter transfer window in January 2026.

According to British media outlet The Times, the Citizens are ready to meet the €65 million release clause in Semenyo’s Bournemouth contract.

Manager Pep Guardiola is said to be keen on signing the attacker to bolster his frontline and improve the team’s performance in the ongoing season.

The heavy reliance on Erling Haaland, who has scored 14 goals in the Premier League and the majority of the team’s goals, is another issue that has influenced the decision.

Performance of Ghanaian Players Abroad wrap-up: Kudus stunner vs Fulham, Forson scores on first start

The club believes that the winger’s prowess in finishing and controlling the ball in tight spaces is an attribute that will strengthen their squad.

Earlier reports suggested reigning Premier League champions Liverpool were also interested, due to Mohamed Salah’s recent dip in form.

With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) approaching, Salah will be away with his national team.

Signing Semenyo, who will be available during that time because Ghana failed to qualify for the AFCON, would help Liverpool remain competitive in all competitions.

The Ghanaian is in top form for his club, having scored six goals and provided three assists in 13 matches in the 2025/26 season.
