All 33 Municipal and District Chief Executives receive one-touch endorsement

0

The Eastern Region has concluded the confirmation process for all 33 Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) nominated by President John Mahama.

All the nominees received a one-touch endorsement during a two-week confirmation exercise.

The confirmation process began in Mpraeso, where the nominee, David Osei Bonsu Effah, secured 31 YES votes out of 37 votes cast, representing 84% of the total valid votes.

The final confirmations were held on Friday, May 16, in the Kwahu Afram Plains North and South districts.

In Kwahu Afram Plains North, the nominee, Kate Mawusi Babanawo, received a 100% endorsement, while in Kwahu Afram Plains South, Moses Tangmee secured 37 YES votes against 4 NO votes, representing 90.2% of total valid votes cast.

With the exception of a few, the majority of the nominees received 100% endorsements, indicating strong support for the President’s appointees.

Apart from Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Akropong, where there were minor tensions, the rest of the confirmations proceeded smoothly.

In Kwahu East, for instance, NPP MP Dr. Bryan Acheampong openly declared his support for the nominee, Samuel Asamoah, and encouraged assembly members to confirm him.

However, in Nsawam-Adoagyiri, tensions nearly escalated into fisticuffs when the MP, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, was prevented from entering the counting area, which had been cordoned off to ensure a smooth ballot tally.

The smooth confirmation process across the region has been attributed to collaboration between the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, and the NDC regional executives, led by Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor.

First Female Scrap Dealer Association Joins SMIDO

The German Development Cooperation together with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) have successfully inaugurated the first all-female Scrap Dealer Association (LEWSA) into the Suame Magazine Industrial Development Organization (SMIDO), the umbrella association of artisan organizations in Suame Magazine.

This integration ensures LEWSA’s inclusion and representation in decision-making processes and dialogue with public actors, as well as strengthening their roles in the e-waste and scraps value chain.

The Suame Magazine Market in Kumasi has long become an artisan landmark for anyone searching for experienced welders, mechanics and scrap traders in Ghana.

Established in response to the ban on spare part imports in the 1990s and located in the heart of the city, the market has grown considerably, covering more than 200 acres of land with around 15,000 workers specializing in artisanry from end-of-life-vehicle dismantling and plastic waste recycling to trading scraps from electronic devices.

Female scrap workers are one of the most vulnerable groups of scrap workers located in the Magazine.

Working in a male dominated sector, they are often confronted with lower bargaining power and less inclusion in dialogues about pricing, safety and required technical trainings despite their vital role in scrap dealers value chain.

To reduce these gaps, the German Development Cooperation together with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MEST) have for the past five years worked with the women working in scrap in Kumasi, to enhance their environmental awareness, introduce safety standards on scrap yards and provide training for workers.

Through this collaboration, the Ladies in E-Waste and Scraps Association (LEWSA) was launched in 2023. Since their inauguration, they have received technical trainings, registered over 350 new members, developed a safe trade guideline for women in business and purchased tricycle fleets to support their activities.

Emmanuella Serwaa Gyawu from ECOCENT Recycling expressed excitement about the integration of LEWSA into SMIDO.

“The women’s confidence is built after the formation of the association. For the first time in trade, they have approached the police, soliciting support and protection as well as inputs to streamline their trade.”

The event was attended by key stakeholders such as government officials from the EPA, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and two Assistant Commanders of Police, who congratulated the association and emphasized that the integration of LEWSA into SMIDO will help protect them from fraudulent traders.

The E-Waste Project is commissioned by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented in Ghana by GIZ in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MEST). The project aims to improve the conditions of handling e-waste in Ghana.

Cabinet to consider decentralisation of sanitation budget – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Cabinet will soon deliberate on the decentralisation of the national sanitation budget to empower districts to take full responsibility for managing their sanitation needs.

According to the President, once the proposed budget is approved, each district will handle its sanitation issues, making local accountability central to the country’s sanitation drive.

Speaking during a durbar at the Old Ghanata Astroturf in Dodowa, Greater Accra, on Friday, May 16, as part of his ongoing ‘Thank You Tour’, President Mahama stressed that cleanliness will become a key performance indicator for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

“Cabinet will soon meet on a decentralisation of the sanitation budget and make every district responsible for its own sanitation,” Mahama stated.

He further announced plans to revive the National Sanitation Day programme, making it a legally backed, properly funded monthly exercise, rolled out through collaboration between local assemblies and private sector stakeholders.

“Cleanliness will become one of the key performance indicators for measuring the performance of MMDCEs and will determine whether they will remain in office or be removed. We will begin to observe the National Sanitation Day programme every month.

“This will be a monthly exercise involving all Ghanaians. This time it will not be a symbolic event, it will be legally backed, properly funded, and it will be operationalised through partnerships with local assemblies and private sector providers,” he said.

Former Chad PM arrested over alleged links to deadly clash

Succès Masra is a critic of Mahamat Déby and called into question last year's election results Succès Masra is a critic of Mahamat Déby and called into question last year’s election results

Chad’s former prime minister and opposition leader, Succès Masra, has been arrested over alleged links to a clash which took place on Wednesday in the south west of the country, a public prosecutor has said.

He is suspected of spreading hateful messages on social media linked to the violence in which at least 42 people died, Oumar Mahamat Kedelaye said.

Masra’s Transformers party said he had been “kidnapped” by military officers in the early hours of the morning” and denounced his detention, which it says was “carried out outside of any known judicial procedure”.

Masra is a fierce critic of President Mahamat Déby and claimed to have defeated him in elections last year.

Masra said his victory had been stolen “from the people” although the official results said Déby had won with 61% of the vote.

Wednesday’s clash broke out in the village of Mandakao, in Logone Occidental province near the Cameroonian border.

“Messages were circulated, notably on social networks, calling on the population to arm themselves against other citizens,” Mr Kedelaye said.

It is not entirely clear what caused the violence, but one source told the AFP news agency that it is believed it was triggered by a land dispute between farmers from the Ngambaye community and Fulani herdsmen.

There has been a troubling recent pattern of violence between local farmers and herders, with the farmers accusing the latter of grazing animals on their land.

More than 80 others have also been detained in connection with the clashes.

Masra briefly served as interim prime minister of the transitional government between January and May 2024.

His party boycotted legislative polls last December due to concerns over the transparency of the electoral process.

The Déby family has ruled Chad for more than three decades.

The military installed Déby as Chad’s leader after his father, Idriss Déby Itno, was killed by rebels in 2021.

A/R: Crows posing hazards to power distribution networks

0

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced measures to tackle the growing issue of crows disrupting power distribution networks in the Ashanti Sub-Transmission region.

In a statement issued by the Ashanti regional office, ECG acknowledged that the activities of crows have led to frequent power outages, creating operational challenges and inconveniencing consumers across the region.

The company assured the public that its Ashanti Sub-Transmission team is actively working to mitigate the effects of these disruptions and ensure a stable and reliable power supply.

ECG emphasized its commitment to addressing the issue promptly and called for public cooperation as it implements the necessary interventions.

Crows, known for their intelligence and adaptability, pose an unexpected hazard to power distribution networks. Their tendency to perch on transmission lines and structures can lead to disruptions through various means, including:

– Short circuits and line trips, affecting power supply.
– Equipment damage, as nests containing metallic materials trigger electrical faults.
– Insulation breakdown, caused by droppings forming conductive paths under humid conditions.
– Increased maintenance costs and operational risks, straining resources.”

The Ashanti Regional office of the Electricity Company of Ghana identified the most affected feeders in the region as Barekese, Akyawkrom, Effiduase, Kumawu, Bekwai, New Edubiase, Dunkwa, and Manso Nkwanta.

These disruptions, caused by crow activity, have significant implications for the reliability of power supply and the overall efficiency of the transmission network.

To address the issue, ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission team has assured the public that a range of preventive measures will be implemented to mitigate the impact.

These include:

– Physical Barriers: Bird spikes, insulated covers, and perch deterrents to minimize roosting.
– Optimized Line Design: Adequate conductor spacing and enhanced insulation to reduce accidental contact.
– Nesting Deterrents: Routine nest removal and application of non-conductive materials on structures.
– Acoustic & Visual Disruptors: Deployment of distress calls, reflective surfaces, and predator decoys to discourage perching.
– Strategic Monitoring: Regular line patrols for early detection and rapid response to faults caused by bird interference.

According to the ECG, these measures are designed to minimize the impact of crows on the transmission infrastructure and ensure a reliable power supply to consumers in the Ashanti Region.

“To provide impetus for improving supply reliability in the region, the General Manager of Special Projects at Head Office, Ing Frederick Kwabena Bediako, in collaboration with Ing Daniel Mensah Asare, GM Ashanti South, and Technical Managers of Ashanti Sub-T, have patrolled the Kuntenase- Bekwai and other problematic feeders to identify challenges affecting the stability of supply in the area.”

Ghana to phase out crude oil for power generation with the second gas processing train – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has proposed a second gas processing train President John Dramani Mahama has proposed a second gas processing train

President John Mahama has announced plans to introduce a second gas processing train to facilitate Ghana’s transition from crude oil to natural gas for power generation.

“Ghana is seeking to phase out the use of crude oil in its power generation mix over the medium term,” President Mahama stated.

According to Mahama, this initiative will not only reduce the country’s reliance on crude oil, but also lower electricity costs and enhance energy security.

The planned development of a second gas processing train is intended to improve energy efficiency, expand the domestic gas supply, and promote a cleaner and more sustainable fuel source, according to a report by citinewsroom.com

President Mahama added; “There was a bit of disinvestment in the energy sector, but new commitments are coming up. So, for instance, we are going to build a second gas train, which is going to handle more gas from our first field.

“We are going to put more gas on stream, so we need a second train because our current plant in Atuabo cannot handle the extra gas.”

This project aims to optimise Ghana’s energy mix and promote sustainable development.

Crude oil has been a volatile and costly fuel source for Ghana’s thermal power plants.

However, the president believes that replacing it with natural gas will alleviate the pressure on the energy sector, which has faced challenges such as mounting debts and high operational costs for independent power producers (IPPs).

“ENI is back; they are drilling again, and early signs are that we might find a considerable quantity of oil and gas. When that happens, we can eliminate crude oil power generation completely in the next three to five years,” the president remarked during the 2025 Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan.

He also noted that the current economic recovery positions Ghana as an attractive destination for both midstream and upstream opportunities, emphasising that the current macroeconomic environment is favorable and stable for business.

President John Dramani Mahama invited investors to partner with the government in scaling up oil and gas infrastructure for long-term growth.

“The oil and gas sector was toxic. I don’t know for what reasons, but I think governments have not prioritised the sector. But I will lay a red carpet for anyone who wants to drill and pump in Ghana,” he concluded.

Mahama’s proposal underscores efforts to diversify Ghana’s energy sector and mitigate the impact of fluctuating crude oil prices on the economy.

I was high on marijuana the first time I walked into a church

Pastor and founder of Perez Chapel International, Bishop Charles Agyinasare Pastor and founder of Perez Chapel International, Bishop Charles Agyinasare

Renowned Ghanaian pastor and founder of Perez Chapel International, Bishop Charles Agyinasare, has shared the powerful story of how he gave his life to Christ during a visit to church under the influence of Marijuana.

Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime, Bishop Agyinasare revealed that in 1980, while working as a teacher and giving private lessons, he was invited to teach two sisters, both of whom he liked.

“When I was making my move, one of them said, ‘My boyfriend is Jesus, and I’d like to introduce you to my boyfriend.’

“ I thought it was a joke. I said, ‘okay, if that’s all it would take for you to be my girlfriend, then I’ll go with you to church.’” he shared.

He described walking into the church high on marijuana and dressed in what was known then as a “Bola shirt” with waist-tied trousers, intending to sit through the service and leave. But something unexpected happened.

“ I heard the preacher say, ‘If you want to give your life to Jesus, come forward,’ and I came under conviction. I don’t remember what he said because I was high, but I remember I had never had an altar call before.

“When I heard the altar call, I walked to the front, gave my life to Jesus, and the power that day, the power of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, broke from my life,” he shared.

That moment, according to the Bishop, marked a turning point.

Bishop Agyinasare has since become one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s Christian community, known for his evangelistic crusades and transformative messages.

Government targets 200,000 hectares to boost cocoa production – Ato Forson

0

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced an ambitious government plan to acquire 200,000 hectares of land for cocoa plantations as part of efforts to revive Ghana’s struggling cocoa sector and restore production levels to 1 million metric tonnes.

Speaking at the inauguration of a new eleven-member Board of Directors for the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) at the Ministry of Finance, Dr Forson stressed the urgent need for bold interventions to address the sharp decline in cocoa production, which has fallen from a peak of 1 million metric tonnes to about 500,000 metric tonnes in recent years.

Dr Forson, who now serves on the COCOBOD Board by virtue of a new legal provision mandating the inclusion of the finance minister and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, reaffirmed government’s commitment to repositioning cocoa as the cornerstone of the national economy.

“Cocoa has always been the mainstay of our economy, and that must not change,” he said.

“Unfortunately, massive mismanagement in recent years has led to a worrying downturn in both production and financial stability. It is time to act decisively.”

He disclosed that government, working through COCOBOD, would establish plantation farms by acquiring about 200,000 hectares of cocoa land to significantly boost production levels.

This, he explained, would complement existing smallholder farmer operations and ensure sustainable growth in the sector.

Dr Forson also highlighted the need to urgently tackle diseased farms, particularly in the Western Region, which continue to hamper output and affect the livelihoods of cocoa farmers. He pledged the Finance Ministry’s unwavering support for COCOBOD as it embarks on this turnaround agenda.

The Chairman of the newly inaugurated board, Dr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, promised to reset, retool, and reposition COCOBOD as a model institution.

Police wey dey find di parents of three newborn babies, all abandoned in east London minutes afta dia birth, say dem now dey focus on about 400 nearby houses.

Dem bin leave Baby Elsa inside one Boots carrier bag near one footpath in Newham on 18 January 2024, bifor one dog walker discover am.

DNA tests later established that she was the sibling of two OD babies, one boy and one girl, each found for very similar circumstances in 2017 and 2019.

Despite say police dey beg, dem still never sabi di parents of di three babies.

For di last five weeks, detectives wey dey search for di parents don give BBC News access to part of dia operation.

Dem allow us to follow officers wey dey go door-to-door dey ask residents to provide DNA samples to see if dem get connection wit di babies.

Dem also dey contact pipo wey dem find say dey use di national DNA database wey fit share familiar DNA wit di children mama.

Officers wey bin recently meet Elsa bin tell BBC say di toddler na bright girl wey dey curious and engaging.

Na on 17 September 2017, wen dem bin find di first baby, Harry, dem find, over a mile to di west of di spot wia dem leave Elsa – just north of di Greenway, a four-mile long footpath and cycleway in Newham. Dem bin leave am for one bush in Plaistow Park, wrap am in towel.

Sixteen months later, dem discover im sister Roman ontop bench by one dog walker in di small children play park, for Roman Road.

Dem bin find her for one freezing evening, at about 22:15. Roman dey wrapped for towel, inside one Sainsbury shopping bag.

Di babies’ names dey given to dem by emergency staff wey bin help dem – dey all don dey changed since.

DNA tests bin show say Harry and Roman be full siblings, however, dat information bin no first dey public.

Na only wen dey find Elsa five years later, and di case come bifor family court, bifor we dey able to report say all three babies get same parents.

Det Insp Jamie Humm, wey become tdi case senior investigating officer afta Elsa dey found, say “No be huge shock” wen DNA bin confam say she be di sister of di oda two babies.

Elsa don dey abandoned just few minutes’ waka from wia dem find Roman.

For di first 12 months afta e take on di investigation, Det Insp Humm bin assume say di baby dem mama dey able to contact police, but dey reluctant to do so.

Im team bin search di area, knock on doors, tok to local pipo, but no-one don see or hear anytin.

In January dis year, di charity Crimestoppers bin offer a £20,000reward for information, wey also prove fruitless.

“Now my strong feeling na say [di mama] no dey able to come forward,” Det Insp Humm tok.

E believe say di babies’ mama fit dey restrained in some way – or she fit get mental or physical health problems.

Police don dey work closely wit experts from di National Crime Agency (NCA), as well as psychological and geographical profilers.

Dem assume say di mama bin leave di babies herself. Paediatric experts don advise say for war zones, for example, mothers don give birth den “get up and waka” immediately.

Police also believe say di mama sabi di local area well.

She bin avoid CCTV cameras and witnesses, yet place all di babies in locations wia dey fit likely dey found quickly.

Analysis of CCTV footage bin lead officers to rule out say di mama use car to get to di sites – instead dey believe say she bin waka along di Greenway.

Now CCTV don dey wia dem find Elsa, however, none bin dey for January 2024, wen she dey abandoned.

Det Supt Lewis Basford, wey don take on strategic oversight of di investigation, acknowledge say conventional techniques don fail to identify di parents so far.

Now, e say di Met dey put plenti emphasis on di investigation to open up new lines of enquiry.

To do dat, dem dey use DNA test, wey dey often dey use in homicides, like novel way.

First, dem don search di national database to find partial matches. Wey throw up many thousands of names. Dey don use oda information to focus on pipo wey fit dey related to di parents.

Det Insp Humm and im team dey focus on about 300 names, and dey plan to see dem all in pesin.

Wit Work wit di NCA, dey also don identify about 400 homes close to di eastern section of di Greenway, from wia di mama fit don waka wit a baby and avoid CCTV.

Dem dey cross-reference those addresses wit information from di electoral roll and oda agencies to find di most likely locations, for pesin wey fit dey connected wit di parents.

In teams of two, officers dey knock on doors to request DNA samples. Det Sgt Laurence Dight say dey generally dey receive warm response. Pipo don hear about di babies and wan help.

E say pipo often dey happy to take di test. Some no gree, wey dey within dia rights.

Once dey don collect samples, dey analyse dem, and decide on di next steps.

In di local community, many dey mystified. Di congregation of East Ham Baptist Church dey bring togeda pipo from all over di world.

Dey regularly dey hold prayers for di mother and babies. Pastor George Tikum, originally from Cameroon, say e dey possible di parents dey here illegally, and leave di babies sake of say dey get more secure life if adopted.

E say di mystery don turn many locals into amateur detectives.

“I still tink say di answer lie wit one pesin to come forward and just give those answers to Elsa and her siblings as to wetin happened to dem and why e happun,” Det Insp Humm tok.

Im concern na for di babies’ mother – and any future children. Officers describe di survival of di three newborns as “miraculous” and worry a fourth child fit no dey so fortunate.

Elsa now just be over one year old and dey toddle and bright.

Det Insp Humm say e bin meet her a couple of months ago, wit police colleagues. She dey “very curious” e tok “Very engaging. No fear.”

Hospital staff dey call her Elsa – wey dey found, only an hour old, on di coldest night of di year – afta di character in di Disney film Frozen.

Now in foster care, Elsa don make wetin family court judge Carol Atkinson call “astonishing progress”.

Det Insp Humm say wen officers recently meet her “everyone dey struggle to keep dia emotions in check”.

“Di one wey no be Elsa; she just be di happiest, coolest,” e tok. I think she’s going to make everyone proud—she’s going to make her mum proud as well.”

Police dey door-knock for one area near di Greenway, one open space wia Elsa dey found

Dem find baby Elsa inside one Boots bag on di Greenway, in Newham, east London

‘The Hand You Cook With Will Be Amputated’

A heated dispute has broken out in the Ahafo Ano South East Constituency, triggered by a leaked WhatsApp voice message from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Women Organiser, known as Meeri as reported by Ghana Web.

The controversy centers on the awarding of a school feeding contract to renowned Ghanaian actress Vivian Jill Lawrence, a decision that has sparked intense backlash from Meeri, who claims she was bypassed in the process.

Meeri, expressing deep frustration in the voice note, criticized the handling of the contract, suggesting that it disregards the local party’s structure and her role as a grassroots organiser.

She revealed that she had yet to receive her official appointment letter as the Women Organiser for the constituency, while Vivian Jill, based in Kumasi, was allegedly given the contract to manage the School Feeding Programme locally.

“How does it happen that as the constituency women organiser, I have not received my appointment letter, but someone from Kumasi receives an appointment letter from Accra to be walking about in my constituency seeking to execute school feeding?” Meeri questioned, emphasizing the lack of respect for the party’s grassroots leaders.

The dispute escalated when Meeri reportedly confronted Vivian Jill, only to find she had left the area.

The organiser then made a chilling threat, warning the actress against proceeding with the contract: “I have told Vivian Jill herself to dare come to cook if she is a woman. The very hand she intends to cook with… she will return with amputated hands.”

Meeri also accused the Ashanti Regional Women Organiser of sidelining local party members in awarding the contract.

The School Feeding Programme, a significant government initiative, has often been at the center of political tensions due to its financial and social impact.

As of now, neither Vivian Jill nor the NDC leadership has publicly responded to the allegations or threats.

I’m yet to be served Dafeamekpor’s defamation suit

0

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, has stated that he has not been served with the defamation suit filed against him by his colleague, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Mr. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.

His comments follow a suit filed by the South Dayi MP over a social media post he claims has severely damaged his reputation.

The legal action stems from a post made by Rev. Ntim Fordjour on May 8, 2025, via the platform X (formerly Twitter), in which he alleged that Mr. Dafeamekpor—who also serves as the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament—acted as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Subsidiary Legislation during a period when the embattled former National Signals Bureau boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, allegedly paid GH¢360,000 to the committee to help facilitate the passage of a Legislative Instrument (L.I.).

Kwabena Adu-Boahene, in his defence against claims that he fraudulently misappropriated GH¢49.1 million, explained that allowances of GH¢960,000 and GH¢309,000 were paid to MPs on the Defence and Interior Committee and the Subsidiary Legislation Committee, respectively, during the passage of the NSB Act and its accompanying Legislative Instrument.

However, in a press statement issued on May 16, 2025, Rev. Ntim Fordjour said the suit had not come to his attention.

He expressed his eagerness to be served, arguing that he would demonstrate the suit lacks merit.

“Media reports of a suit supposedly filed by my colleague Honourable Member of Parliament for South Dayi. Mr. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has come to my attention.

“I have, however, not been served with any such suit. I, therefore, await the service of the supposed suit and will demonstrate that it is of no merit,” he stated.

Speaking about the government’s efforts to stabilise the economy at a durbar in Wa as part of his thank-you tour on Thursday, May 15, Mahama expressed confidence that the country is on the right path.

Since taking office, Mahama said the government’s primary focus has been on stabilising the economy.

He explained that the budget presented to Parliament in March this year was designed to drastically reduce expenditure while directing saved revenue into priority areas, as promised in the government’s manifesto.

“I am happy to report to you that our efforts to stabilise the economy have begun to yield results,” Mahama stated, highlighting the improved performance of the local currency and a gradual reduction in the prices of goods and services as signs of success.

The President commended the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana for their leadership and close collaboration in driving the economic turnaround.

He praised their teams for their efforts and stressed that the government’s coordinated approach was key to the progress achieved thus far.

“I wish to commend the Honorable Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, along with their teams, for the close collaboration and coordination they are displaying in this economic turnaround,” Mahama added.

Council of State Member overstepped boundaries – Martin Amidu

Martin Amidu has taken aim at former Chief Justice and current Council of State member Sophia Akuffo, accusing her of breaching her oath by publicly criticizing the constitutional process used to suspend and investigate sitting Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Responding to remarks Akuffo made at the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) forum on April 30 — in which she described Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution as “unfair” and called for amendments to allow a right of appeal for a Chief Justice found guilty by a committee — Amidu questioned the legality and ethics of such commentary from someone directly involved in the consultative process.

GNPC CEO outlines strategic upstream reset at Africa Energies Summit

0

Kwame Ntow Amoah

At the 8th edition of the Africa Energies Summit, Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah, Ag. CEO of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), presented a forward-looking vision of GNPC within the overall policy context of the resetting agenda for Ghana’s oil and gas sector, emphasizing the need for strategic investment and innovation to address production challenges and sustain growth.

Addressing a distinguished audience of industry leaders, policymakers, and global energy stakeholders, Mr. Amoah’s presentation focused on the theme “Taking Ghana to the Next Level: Advancing Oil & Gas Exploration & Production.” He outlined GNPC’s comprehensive approach to reversing the significant decline in oil production seen over the past eight years.

Resetting the Upstream Agenda

Mr. Amoah acknowledged that Ghana’s oil production has dropped dramatically from a peak of 195,750 barrels per day (bopd) in 2019 to around 110,500 bopd in recent years. He attributed this decline to factors such as declining field productivity, low exploration activity, and challenges with fiscal policies.

“Achieving sustainable growth in Ghana’s oil and gas sector requires bold thinking and a willingness to embrace innovation,” Mr. Amoah stated. He emphasized that to truly take Ghana to the next level, the focus must extend beyond increasing well counts to reimagining upstream strategies through data-driven decision-making and modern technologies.

Harnessing Technology for Enhanced Production

GNPC’s Ag. CEO emphasized the importance of incorporating advanced technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), and similar technologies and their relevance for guiding exploration and production investment decision making. Mr. Amoah highlighted GNPC’s plans to leverage digital solutions for better reservoir management, optimize drilling operations, and deploy cutting-edge seismic data acquisition methods.

One notable strategy discussed was the adoption of 4D seismic acquisition and Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) technology, designed to provide high-resolution data and improve subsurface imaging. Additionally, GNPC is exploring non-seismic technologies such as Satellite Imagery and Airborne Transient Pulse surveys to de-risk exploration activities, particularly in the underexplored Voltaian Basin.

Investment as a Catalyst for Growth

Mr. Amoah made a compelling case for developing investor-friendly frameworks, stressing the importance of stable and transparent fiscal policies to attract new players into Ghana’s upstream sector. He noted that while Ghana’s geological prospects remain robust, the country must address perceived risks associated with frequent regulatory changes while positioning GNPC as the local investor who has similar concerns with excessive regulatory burden. “We need to adopt a new mindset — one that balances strategic investment, technological innovation, and sustainable practices,” he said. “Only then can we position Ghana as a resilient and competitive oil and gas hub on the African continent.”

A Call for Strategic Partnerships

In line with GNPC’s broader vision, Mr. Amoah called for greater collaboration between local and international oil companies, service providers, and technology innovators. He argued that multi-operator collaborations and the integration of marginal fields into hub-based developments could reduce costs and optimize resource utilization.

He also highlighted GNPC’s commitment to leveraging its role as the national oil company under His Excellency the President of Ghana’s vision of GNPC as a centre of excellence in Africa, to spearhead these initiatives, ensuring that local capacity and indigenous expertise are prioritized.

Positioning Ghana for the Future

Beyond addressing short-term challenges, Mr. Amoah urged the industry to consider long-term sustainability, including responsible environmental stewardship and social responsibility. He emphasized GNPC’s proactive approach to aligning upstream activities with global trends toward decarbonization and cleaner energy solutions.

“Resetting our upstream agenda is not just about boosting production — it’s about creating a more resilient and sustainable energy future for Ghana,” he added.

Next Steps

The summit session concluded with a call to action for industry stakeholders to seize investment opportunities and support GNPC’s mission to develop Ghana’s vast oil and gas potential responsibly.

Mr. Amoah’s strategic outline, built on innovation and collaboration, reflects GNPC’s dedication to arresting production decline, sustaining production, optimizing resource utilization, and building a more resilient upstream sector.

GNPC’s new direction highlights the Minister of Energy and Green Transition’s leadership in driving Ghana’s energy transformation, demonstrating a commitment to both economic development and sustainable exploration and production practices.

Deputy Minority Leader clarifies remarks on Mahama’s appointment of ‘people from the north’

0

Patricia Appiagyei is the Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Asokwa Patricia Appiagyei is the Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Asokwa

The Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, Patricia Appiagyei, has clarified her statement on President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of people from the north, which she made in a recent interview with Angel FM.

In a statement issued by the deputy leader’s office, she indicated that her remarks have been misconstrued to mean that she was castigating the president’s appointments of people from the northern parts of the country.

The office explained that Appiagyei, who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa, was only calling out the president over the low representation of women in some positions in his government.

“The Honourable Member, in her interview conducted in Twi, was responding to a question about women and gender representation in President Mahama’s administration. She expressed concern about the lack of regional balance and the inadequate inclusion of women in government appointments, as mandated by the Constitution of Ghana. Specifically, she questioned why even northern women who represent a significant and vibrant portion of Ghana’s population were excluded from leadership roles.

“Her comments were not in any way a critique of northerners or driven by tribal sentiment. Rather, they were meant to highlight the broader issue of equity, gender inclusion, and fair regional representation principles rooted in our constitutional values,” part of the statement reads.

It further clarified that; “It is unfortunate that this thoughtful call for inclusivity and representation has been twisted into a tribal narrative, which Hon. Patricia Appiagyei completely rejects and condemns. She has always stood for national unity, diversity, and equal opportunity for all Ghanaians, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or background.”

What Patricia Appiagyei said:

The Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, Patricia Appiagyei, accused President John Dramani Mahama of neglecting females in the appointment of Chief Executive Officers for the various state-owned institutions in the country.

According to the Deputy Minority Leader, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa, the president has not only failed Ghanaian women in his appointments, but has also failed to give adequate allocation to women from the northern part of the country, where the majority of his appointed CEOs hail from.

She added that the president’s action violates the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which provides for regional balance in appointments to such positions, and sets a dangerous precedent.

“One of the reasons I’m sad is that majority of them (women) who have been chosen to be chief executives are from the north. It is even more astonishing if you look at the Ashanti Region. What I think is that maybe he is not getting women from the north to appoint as he said… If this is the case, then there is a problem.

“Even the recent district assembly appointees they brought had the majority of them (the female appointees) from the north… This is very dangerous because it was the whole of Ghana that voted, and the law of Ghana, which is the constitution, states that appointments should be done in a way that ensures balance (regional balance),” she said in the Twi dialect during an interview on Angel TV, on May 15, 2025.

The Asokwa legislator added, “If you look at the population size, they are not more than the remaining of us. In terms of population, Akans and the other tribes are more than them, so why should the appointment be lopsided in this manner?”

Joe Mettle missed TGMA stage appearance due to ticket glitch – Manager explains

From L to R: Artiste manager Nii Noi and Gospel singer Joe Mettle From L to R: Artiste manager Nii Noi and Gospel singer Joe Mettle

Gospel musician Joe Mettle’s absence on stage to receive his award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) was due to a ticketing issue at the venue entrance, according to his manager, Nii Noi.

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, the talent manager revealed that Joe Mettle experienced difficulties with his ticket being flagged as already used when he attempted to enter the Grand Arena, a situation that delayed his access to the auditorium.

“I said on stage that he’s on his way. In fact, when he was entering, he had ticket verification issues just like Felicia Osei. When he got there and showed his ticket, they said it had already been used. After several tries, he called me and said, ‘they say somebody has used my ticket’” Nii Noi explained

Nii Noi, who had stepped on stage to pick up the award for Male Vocalist of the Year on Joe Mettle’s behalf, stated that he rushed out immediately afterward to assist the gospel singer. He said the issue was eventually resolved, but only after the first award presentation had already taken place.

“So, after picking the Male Vocalist award for him, I went out to help him sort it out. Then the guy (at the gate) said, ‘oh, it was a network issue. It’s been resolved now.’ That’s how come he missed picking the first one,” he stated.

Explaining why Joe Mettle was not seen on stage for the second award, his manager explained that the singer was not seated in the audience area at the time of the announcement.

“The second one, after the tribute performance, I think it was followed by Stonebwoy, they came to call us to take a photo with the first award. He was there; he was just not seated,” Nii Noi clarified.

The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) has called on the government to renegotiate contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), arguing that the current pricing arrangements are a major source of financial inefficiencies and revenue leakages in the energy sector.

According to PUWU, the existing contracts are unfavorable and result in significant financial losses for the country.

On Thursday, May 15, Timothy Nyame, General Secretary of PUWU, expressed his concerns during an appearance on Citi Eyewitness News, and monitored by GhanaWeb.

He pointed out that there is a lack of attention to the cost implications of IPP contracts, which have become a significant source of revenue leakage.

“There are certain things that we are also raising about the pricing of IPPs… has the government taken the pain to renegotiate the IPP contract with them?” Timothy asked.

The union executive also stated that they believe that renegotiating these contracts could help optimise revenues and improve the sustainability of the energy sector.

Timothy noted that while public discussions often focus on utility tariffs and fuel supply, the inflated costs of electricity from IPPs are rarely considered, especially when compared to pricing structures in other African countries.

“These are some of the things that we are mentioning – that the pricing of the IPP is part of the leakages that they have to plug. Nobody is speaking about that. Nobody sees that IPPs should be renegotiated,” he added.

He also spoke about how fluctuations in exchange rates impact power pricing, and called for a shift to contracts denominated in Ghanaian cedis to better reflect local economic conditions.

“Looking at the pricing across, how much some of the IPPs are charging compared with Ghana, also, changing the pricing to Ghana cedi. We are not looking at that,” he added.

PUWU’s demand is on the back of ongoing concerns regarding the financial implications of IPP contracts on Ghana’s economy.

Vinicius Junior has been racially abused by fans on numerous occasions Vinicius Junior has been racially abused by fans on numerous occasions

Three supporters of Valencia who were found guilty of racially abusing Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during a match have been sentenced to eight months in prison.

During a La Liga game where Real Madrid lost to Valencia 1-0 at the Mestalla in May 2023, an incident occurred where the player identified a fan racially abusing him consistently, which led to the temporary suspension of the match.

According to ESPN, the court found the three fans guilty and initially sentenced them to 12 months in prison, later reducing it to eight months after the defendants accepted responsibility for the crime, which breaches article 173.1 of Spain’s criminal code.

They were also given a three-year stadium ban, later reduced to two years, and fined a certain amount of money to cover costs.

Vinicius Jr in response to the judgment, expressed his appreciation to Spanish authorities for taking such drastic actions and vowed to continue fighting against racism.

“Many people asked me to ignore it, others said that my fight was in vain and that I should just ‘play football.’ But, as I’ve always said, I’m not a victim of racism. I am an executioner of racists. This first criminal conviction in Spanish history is not for me. It’s for all Black people.

“Let the other racists be afraid, ashamed, and hide in the shadows. Otherwise, I’ll be here to call them out. Thank you to La Liga and Real Madrid for helping to bring about this historic condemnation. There’s more to come,” he wrote on X.

The Head of Public Events and Communications at Charterhouse Productions Ltd, Robert Klah, has spoken out about the ticketing problem media personality Felicia Osei experienced at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

Felicia Osei expressed frustration on social media after she was denied entry into the Grand Arena for the TGMAs because security told her someone else had already used her ticket.

Speaking on Hitz FM, Robert Klah confirmed that they had received her complaint. He explained that the issue came up during their post-event review meeting.

“In our post-mortem discussions after the event, we received such feedback. That’s why I’m sharing some possible scenarios, because we discovered that some guests had shared their tickets with others,” he said.

Robert explained that the tickets used at the event were linked to a system that scanned and captured the face of the person who first used it.
Therefore, if someone else tried to enter with the same ticket, they would be blocked at the gate.

He apologised to Felicia Osei for the unfortunate situation she faced and assured the public that the organisers are taking the matter seriously.

“We’re really sorry for the embarrassment she may have experienced. We plan to meet with our ticketing vendors to understand exactly what happened,” he said.

Robert also made it clear that they intend to investigate the matter thoroughly to avoid such problems in the future.

“We want to get to the bottom of this so we can learn from it and prevent it from happening again. Once again, we apologise to Felicia. But based on our findings so far, it may have been caused by one of three possible reasons,” he added.

GTA Unveils PPP Department –

Maame Efua Houadjeto, GTA boss

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has inaugurated a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Department to foster sustainable and impactful collaboration between the public and private sectors within the tourism industry.

The new department, unveiled on Monday, is guided by Section 42 of the Tourism Act, 2011 (Act 817), and seeks to institutionalise the Public-Private Partnership Forum as a platform for co-planning, co-investing, and co-implementing tourism initiatives.

Mrs. Maame Efua Houadjeto, the Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, described the move as recognition of the importance of shared vision, innovation, and strategic investment in driving the growth of Ghana’s tourism sector.

“This initiative goes beyond policy. It is about building a framework that enables seamless collaboration with stakeholders, supports joint ventures in infrastructure development, encourages product innovation, and strengthens destination marketing,” she said.

She noted that the department would help bridge gaps in trust, coordination, and policy alignment, thereby enhancing the efficiency and responsiveness of tourism development.

Mrs. Houadjeto emphasised that the expertise and investment of the private sector remained vital in shaping tourism policy and accelerating progress. “Ghana is ready for business – whether in accommodation, travel, ecotourism, heritage promotion, or digital tourism solutions,” she said, adding that the public sector must act as facilitators, not gatekeepers, to create an enabling regulatory environment that empowered businesses and aligned with global tourism standards. “As we embark on this journey, let us shift from transactional partnerships to transformational ones – elevating brand Ghana, creating decent jobs, and reinforcing Ghana’s position as the heart of West African tourism,” she added.

As part of the ceremony, the CEO officially introduced Mr. Jones Aruna Nelson as the Head of the PPP Department, and Mr. Bright Asempa Tsadidey as Head of Corporate Affairs.

Mr. Nelson, in his remarks, said the creation of the department marked a significant milestone in efforts to build a dynamic and inclusive tourism sector in Ghana.

He invited both local and international investors to partner with the Authority in reshaping Ghana’s tourism future.

“The doors of the GTA remain open to visionary partners eager to make an impact,” he said.

Mr. Tsadidey described his appointment as both a personal milestone and a renewed commitment to innovation and service.

Emmanuel Annor Questions GFA’s Disciplinary Standards After Fine

0

NATIONS FC striker Emmanuel Annor has openly questioned the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA’s) disciplinary standards after being fined GH₵500 for displaying a religious message during a Ghana Premier League match against Asante Kotoko.

Annor was sanctioned for removing his shirt after scoring, revealing an undershirt with the inscription, “I belong to Jesus.”

The GFA’s Disciplinary Committee ruled the celebration violated league rules, which prohibit religious or political messages during games. He was also issued a formal warning, with a threat of harsher punishment for future breaches.

In a defiant response on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Annor criticised what he described as inconsistency in football regulations.

“Why can football players celebrate LGBTQ+ sexuality but not their love for Christ?” he posted.

He included Romans 14:8 in his post: “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”

Annor’s remarks have sparked debate online, with some supporting his right to express his faith, while others defend the GFA’s stance on maintaining neutrality on religious and political matters.

National Security Hunts Notorious Landguard “Poppy Osman” Over Illegal Demolitions And Land Grabbing In Accra

F Bd C B F F

The National Security Secretariat has launched an intensive manhunt for a notorious landguard in Accra, popularly known as “Poppy Osman,” following a series of complaints accusing him of unlawful demolitions and forceful takeover of private properties.

“Poppy Osman” is alleged to have led a violent demolition exercise in March 2025 at Tse-Addo, a suburb of the La-Dadekotopon Municipality. Multiple structures both concrete and wooden were razed to the ground, leaving legal occupants of the land homeless. Victims claim the suspect, with the support of a gang of armed landguards, destroyed their properties under the guise of owning the land.

In an apparent attempt to cement control over the disputed property, “Poppy Osman” reportedly began the hurried construction of a 10-storey building shortly after the demolition. However, following several failed attempts by affected individuals to get assistance from the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, petitions to the National Security Secretariat prompted swift intervention. Security personnel moved in to halt the construction, allowing room for legal proceedings to determine rightful ownership of the land.

Despite the intervention, the suspect allegedly returned to the site with over 100 armed landguards on Wednesday, May 15, 2025, in an attempt to forcibly retake possession. The group reportedly attempted to attack private security guards stationed at the location to prevent further development. However, a timely intelligence-led response by security operatives foiled the attack. “Poppy Osman” is said to have fled the scene upon spotting the officers.

The National Security Secretariat has since issued an arrest warrant for the suspect, who has also been named in at least three other petitions involving similar land encroachment cases across various parts of the Greater Accra Region.

One of the complainants, Madam Salomey Adjeley Odamtten, whose property at Tse-Addo was affected, expressed her frustration with the regional police command, accusing it of failing to act impartially in the matter. She, however, commended the National Security for stepping in and facilitating a legal process to address the dispute.

Another petitioner, Mr. Samuel Narh, a businessman whose property at Mahnet was allegedly taken over by the same suspect, questioned the silence of the police regarding the suspect’s ongoing criminal activities.

Sources within the Secretariat confirm that operatives are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to apprehend “Poppy,” who is now believed to be in hiding and evading capture.

Keta MP inspires others as her returns to his roots

Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey returned to the salt mines of Keta following Parliament's recess Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey returned to the salt mines of Keta following Parliament’s recess

The Member of Parliament for Keta, Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for many in Ghana, particularly in his hometown of Anlo-Afiadenyigba.

Following the recent parliamentary recess, the MP returned to his roots, engaging in artisan salt mining, a humble trade reflective of his challenging beginnings.

This gesture, captured in images widely shared on social media platforms, testifies to Gakpey’s deep connection to his community and his remarkable journey from adversity to prominence.

Born into modest circumstances, Gakpey’s early life was marked by resilience and determination. As a young boy, he walked barefoot to school due to the financial hardships his family endured.

“I didn’t have shoes, but I had a dream,” he recalled in an interview with GhanaWeb. His pursuit of education, despite these challenges, laid the foundation for his eventual rise to political leadership.

Today, as the MP for Keta, he represents not only his constituents but also the possibility of transcending humble origins through hard work and perseverance.

Gakpey shared further details of his teenage years, during which he supported his family by trading crabs.

“I used to carry crabs from Anloga Market to Afram Plains to sell,” he revealed, highlighting the lengths he went to contribute to his household’s income.

This entrepreneurial spirit, born out of necessity, shaped his understanding of the struggles faced by ordinary Ghanaians, particularly those in rural communities like Keta. According to the MP, his experiences continue to inform his advocacy for policies that address poverty, education, and economic opportunities for his constituents.

His recent return to Anlo-Afiadenyigba to engage in salt mining was, to him, more than a symbolic act; it represented a powerful reminder of his unwavering commitment to his roots.

Dressed in simple attire and working alongside local miners, Gakpey demonstrated that leadership is not about distancing oneself from the people but about sharing in their daily realities.

As he shovelled salt under the scorching sun, the MP’s actions reflected his commitment to his roots, emphasising humility and service in leadership.

Keta, in the Volta Region, is a constituency known for its rich cultural heritage but also its economic challenges.

As a predominantly fishing and farming community, Keta faces issues such as coastal erosion, limited infrastructure, and youth unemployment. However, Gakpey, who is currently serving his second term in Parliament, has consistently championed initiatives to address these concerns, including advocating for improved educational facilities and support for local fishermen.

His personal story fuels his passion for creating opportunities that enable others to rise above their circumstances, just as he did.

To his constituents, Gakpey’s reverence for his roots demonstrates authenticity and relatability, key qualities required of leadership in Ghanaian politics. His ability to connect with his constituents on a personal level sets him apart in a field often criticised for being out of touch.

His return to the salt mines not only honours his past but also sends a strong message to the youth of Keta and Ghana at large: no beginning is too humble, and no dream is too big.

Seidu Agongo and his Alive Industries redeem GH¢500,000 pledge to Ghana Medical Trust Fund

Alhaji Seidu Agongo (R) seen presenting a cheque of GH¢500,000 to the Minister of Health Alhaji Seidu Agongo (R) seen presenting a cheque of GH¢500,000 to the Minister of Health

Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo has fulfilled a pledge of GH¢500,000 to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, a move to support the country’s growing dialysis needs.

Alhaji Agongo, who is also the founder and owner of Alive Industries, made the donation at the Ministry of Health in Accra, together with his management.

He described the initiative as “a programme that touches the very foundation of the Ghanaian people”.

Dialysis treatment in Ghana has become a growing burden for patients, many of whom struggle to afford the high cost.

According to Agongo, the average dialysis session costs around GHS700, and a patient typically requires three sessions per week — a monthly total of approximately GH¢8,400 (around $800).

“In a developing country where people hardly get food to eat, this is a significant strain,” Agongo said. “That is why I see this programme as one that truly resonates with the grassroots and deserves all our support.”

Agongo, who operates a dialysis centre himself, underscored the link between health and economic productivity.

“As a businessman, my business only flourishes in a healthy environment. We all need access to proper healthcare.”

He also extended his appreciation to the Minister of Health for his commitment to the programme and President John Dramani Mahama, under whose leadership the Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) initiative was launched. “This is not for his own sake, but for the citizens of Ghana,” Agongo added.

The Minister of Health, speaking at the event, lauded Alive Industries for the donation, saying: “We are so grateful and we know this is not just corporate social responsibility. It’s a true gesture of national solidarity.”

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was established to support citizens who are unable to afford critical medical services, especially those requiring long-term treatments such as dialysis.

The government has called on more individuals and institutions to follow suit in helping to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system.
