“I can’t date a virgin” – Ex BBN star Doyin David sparks debate with candid take on love, sex, and submission

Reality TV star and ex-BBNaija housemate Doyin David is once again the center of online buzz after her appearance on a dating-themed talk show.

In her usual unapologetic style, Doyin dropped a statement that sent shockwaves across social media:

“I can’t date a virgin. It’s not possible.”

Known for her blunt honesty and confident presence, Doyin didn’t hold back. She shared that her bold personality often makes people nervous, telling the host with a smirk:

“I make most people nervous, so I’m not surprised you are nervous.”

When asked about her current dating status, she admitted:

“It’s been a minute, to be honest. A couple of months ago. Dating in Nigeria these days is extreme sports. It’s hectic.”

Despite her hard shell, Doyin revealed a surprisingly tender side.

“I will be submissive for the right man,” she said, explaining that her biggest relationship green flags are being listened to and seeing real change when she expresses discomfort.

She also didn’t mince words when calling out how women are often immediately sexualized by men:

“Most times when a guy meets a girl, it’s very easy for them to sexualize her… What’s sex going to look like with this person, without getting to know the person. Sex is important to me, but I’m a whole human being outside of my vagina.”

Her statements are already sparking debates across Nigerian Twitter and Instagram. While some praised her openness and refusal to conform, others questioned the fairness and implications of dismissing virgins outright.

GHS urges public to observe hygiene as rains begin

0

By Linda Naa Deide Aryeetey

Accra, May 23, GNA – Dr Dennis Odai Laryea, Deputy Director, Public Health Division, Ghana Health Service (GHS), has urged the public to maintain hygiene and monitor food and water intake as rains and floods increase health risks.

“Whether rain or shine, contracting cholera simply means you have eaten food or drunk water contaminated with faeces,” he said.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Dr Laryea noted that the cholera outbreak from last year remained active, with sporadic suspected cases still being recorded.

Between October 2024 and May 2025, a total of 612 confirmed cholera cases were reported across five regions.

The Central Region recorded the highest number with 270 cases, followed by Greater Accra with 200, Western Region with 135, Ashanti with five, and Eastern Region with two.

A total of 51 deaths were recorded during the period, though none occurred in May.

Dr Laryea said the number of suspected cases had dropped significantly in recent months.

“Since the beginning of May, the service has recorded six suspected cases of cholera with one confirmed, and no death recorded,” he stated.

He advised the public to wash hands with soap under running water regularly, eat warm food, drink clean water, and use hand sanitiser frequently as preventive measures.

Earlier this year, Ghana commenced its first oral cholera vaccination campaign, targeting 150,634 people in the most affected districts.

The campaign focused on individuals aged two years and above in parts of the Greater Accra, Central, Western, and Eastern regions.

The sub-national campaign in Awutu Senya East exceeded its target of 150,000 people, while the campaign in the Western Region aimed to reach 600,000 residents.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), cholera is a global public health threat, indicating inequity and a lack of social and economic development.

Access to safe water, basic sanitation, and hygiene is essential to prevent cholera and other waterborne diseases. In 2023, WHO recorded 535,321 cases and 4,007 deaths from 45 countries.

Cholera is often linked to limited access to clean water, poor sanitation facilities, and inadequate hygiene, which may result from conflict, displacement, climate-related events such as floods or drought, and insufficient investment in water and sanitation infrastructure.

Most people infected with cholera experience mild or moderate diarrhoea and can be treated with oral rehydration solution (ORS). However, the disease can progress rapidly, making early treatment critical. Severe cases require intravenous fluids, ORS, and antibiotics.

Effective prevention and control require a combination of enhanced surveillance, improved water and sanitation, risk communication, community engagement, access to treatment, and oral cholera vaccination campaigns.

Thaddeus Sory accuses Godfred Dame of hypocrisy

0

Legal practitioner, Thaddeus Sory, has expressed his disapproval of former Attorney-General, Godfred Dame’s recent public statements, labelling the individual as a “cry baby” and accusing them of hypocrisy.

In a Facebook post titled “AND STILL CRYING INCONGRUOUSLY – PART ONE,” Sory addresses the lawyer’s response to his previous criticisms, which included allegations of obsession and unethical conduct.

Mr Sory refutes these claims, stating that his actions are motivated by two primary reasons:

  1. Signs that the individual is learning and may eventually change their behaviour.
  2. A commitment to not tolerating spoiled individuals.

He further critiqued the lawyer’s response, highlighting contradictions and inconsistencies in their arguments.

He pointed out the individual’s admission of representing clients affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) yet claiming that a petition they filed against the Chief Justice is driven by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr Sory describes this as “incongruous logic.”

Additionally, Sory accuses the lawyer of hypocrisy, referencing instances where the individual publicly criticised judicial decisions, yet now decries similar criticisms from others.

He questions the ethical consistency of a lawyer who publicly denigrates judges while simultaneously seeking to represent clients in court.

The post concludes with Mr Sory expressing regret for having to address the matter publicly.

“Once again, friends and family, sorry I had to do this. Please forgive me. It is just me being silly, but not in a hard way.”

Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has expressed his excitement after earning a call-up to the Black Stars squad for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London.

The 32-year-old has been named in Ghana’s squad for the four-nation friendly tournament, following his impressive displays in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where he kept clean sheets against Chad and Madagascar.

Speaking to Max TV before departing for London, Asare shared his gratitude and determination to make Ghanaians proud.

“I’m grateful to God, our supporters, and all Ghanaians for their support,” he said. “It’s not easy for a local player to earn a place in the Black Stars, and every match is tough.

So when we receive a call-up, we’re always ready to step up.”He emphasized the importance of preparation and focus ahead of the tournament. L

“We have to psyche ourselves and prepare because anything can happen at any time. Now that we’ve been given this opportunity, we must represent Ghana well and make the nation proud.

‘This has embarrassed us’ – Martin Kpebu slams Godfred Dame for role in Jakpa tape

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has strongly condemned the conduct of former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, over his involvement in the controversial Jakpa tape.

Kpebu’s comments come in the wake of a petition filed with the General Legal Council (GLC) seeking sanctions against Dame for alleged professional misconduct, following the emergence of an audio recording and WhatsApp conversations between him and Richard Jakpa, the third accused in a high-profile criminal case involving Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

Speaking on The Keypoints on TV3, Kpebu described Dame’s actions as unethical, embarrassing and damaging to Ghana’s criminal justice system.

“As a society, we were very clear at the time that the Attorney General had breached the rules of ethics. His statements in the tape just sought to destroy the justice system. This thing has embarrassed us. It has brought the criminal justice system so low,” he said on May 24, 2025.

The case centers on a €2.37 million financial loss to the state stemming from a 2014–2016 ambulance procurement deal with Big Sea, a company Jakpa represented.

Both Forson and Jakpa denied the charges, which include wilfully causing financial loss, abetment, and contravening the Public Procurement Act.

However, the trial took a dramatic turn when the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) released a leaked recording of private conversations between Dame and Jakpa.

The recording, admitted into evidence by the court in June 2024, appears to capture the then-Attorney General discussing Jakpa’s arrest and possibly encouraging him to shape his testimony in a way that could harm Forson.

Therefore, Kpebu emphasised that what transpired in the recording is unacceptable in democracy and would not wait until the General Legal Council declares it as unethical before he sees it as such.

“It doesn’t matter the outcome of the General Legal Council. The fact remains that as citizens, we all heard what Godfred Dame stated in that tape, and those statements are unethical. We heard it. What we heard is not anything that should be allowed in a thriving democracy such as ours,” he added.

A formal petition has since been filed with the General Legal Council (GLC), Ghana’s legal regulatory body.

The petitioner, a Ghanaian citizen named Daniel Kwame Ofosu-Appiah, is urging the GLC to investigate and sanction Dame under the Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32), citing grave ethical breaches and attempts to improperly influence Jakpa’s testimony without his lawyer’s knowledge or consent.

You have a man to cuddle every night

A Nigerian woman, Teepha, has berated married women who tell her sob stories about their husbands and marriages.

The mum of two, who stated this in a Facebook post said she doesn’t pity the women because no matter how useless they deem their husbands, they at least have men to ‘sleep with every night’ as well as ‘share financial responsibility’ unlike many single women and mothers.

“Whenever a married woman comes to tell me sob story about her marriage and her husband for me to pity her, all I do is laugh. No matter how usèlèss you think your husband is or how you talk about him to attract pity. I won’t pity you. At least, you dey see man cuddle and preek to knàck every night plus MRS title that society respect so much,” she wrote.

If the man is so usèlèss like you say or claim, leave him and enter street to see what we single womèn are seeing in the dating pool.

I do literal everything for myself and pay all bills alone and you want me to pity you who is living with a man that is assisting you no matter how small?

The problem is that, a lot of women think marriage is a soft spot for every woman but it is not in reality. If you open eyes waa marry a financially struggling màn to answer MRS, be ready to work and support yourself!

No need to complain or look for pity! All of us know what marriage with a financially struggling man looks like! Just work and support yourself while you enjoy midnight cuddle, preek and Mrs title.

I don’t pity any married woman who lives with a man. That preeq you enjoy, a lot of us no see am sis.

“If You Keep Arresting Everyone, That Power Will Leave You” — Vormawor Warns NDC

0

Private legal practitioner and social activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has issued a caution to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging it to avoid the missteps that cost the New Patriotic Party (NPP) public support in the past as per reports from Citinewsroom.

His comments followed the recent arrest and release of NPP youth activist, Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Vormawor questioned the necessity of the arrest, suggesting it may have been an overreaction to political provocation.

In a social media post on May 24, he expressed concern about the government’s increasing reliance on law enforcement to suppress dissent.

He warned that such tactics could damage the NDC’s credibility and alienate the electorate. “This feels like the umpteenth time I have to rebuke the NDC about the risk of overzealous policing,” he stated.

Vormawor argued that only arrests linked to the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL)—a state initiative to recover stolen public assets—should be pursued.

He made it clear that while he supports accountability, targeting individuals over political propaganda is counterproductive. “If someone engages in unnecessary propaganda and you feel the need to show them where power lies… that power will leave you,” he cautioned.

He encouraged the government to maintain focus on its development agenda and not allow opposition antics to divert its attention.

According to him, prioritizing political distractions over governance would only lead to the same fate that befell the previous administration.

Rapper Ja Rule walks his daughter down the aisle as she marries her heartthrob

Rapper Ja Rule shared an emotional milestone with his family over the weekend as his daughter, Brittney Atkins, tied the knot in a heartfelt ceremony that brought out the softer side of the hip hop icon. Known for his gritty lyrics and commanding stage presence, Ja Rule traded rap battles for wedding vows, walking his daughter down the aisle and embracing the joy of fatherhood on her big day.

Social media clips captured the tender moment as Ja Rule carefully escorted Brittney, her wedding gown’s long train flowing behind her. The proud father moved deliberately, ensuring not to step on the dress, a lighthearted gesture that drew smiles from guests and showed a different side of the Murder Inc. star.

Brittney’s groom, identified as “Tiki” on Instagram, was warmly welcomed by Ja Rule, who exchanged a handshake and a hug with his new son in law. The moment marked a symbolic passing of the torch, with Ja Rule standing in full support of the couple.

Celebrations continued into the night, with Ja Rule hitting the dance floor to share a memorable first dance with his daughter. Later, he took the microphone, not to perform, but to deliver an impromptu speech. He admitted he hadn’t written anything in advance, choosing instead to speak from the heart.

Just months earlier, the rapper had opened up about his daughter’s upcoming wedding in an interview with Page Six, saying he wasn’t planning to perform a full concert but hinted he might have a surprise or two in store for her. While he held back the bars, his presence and emotion were unmistakable.

While there were no visible tears, the moment clearly touched Ja Rule deeply, and whether or not emotions spilled behind closed doors, the day was a celebration of love, growth, and family.

Congratulations poured in across social media for Brittney and her husband, as the newlyweds began their next chapter with a proud father cheering them on.

John Mahama is not vindictive; he’s a true stateman

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams (L) and President John Dramani Mahama (R) Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams (L) and President John Dramani Mahama (R)

The General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has praised President John Dramani Mahama, commending his statesmanship and gracious character.

According to him, the President, unlike many typical politicians, embodies a spirit of humility and is not inclined to be vindictive or seek retaliation against those who offend him, a trait he deeply admires and considers worthy of emulation.

Speaking to his congregation during a Sunday service, Archbishop Duncan-Williams also reflected on certain actions taken by individuals against the President.

He noted that, despite these challenges, the President continued to persevere and maintained cordial and open relations with such individuals, demonstrating a level of forgiveness and grace that stands in contrast to how others might have responded with vindictiveness.

“President John Dramani Mahama is a very humble man. The man is not an arrogant person neither is he vindictive. If you know what certain people did to this guy, sometimes it breaks my heart. He has proven evidence but he’s gone past it and acts like nothing has happened,” he said.

To reinforce his point, the revered preacher shared a personal account involving an individual who had previously launched verbal attacks and insults at the President while he was in opposition.

According to him, the President responded to this individual not with resentment, but with a warm embrace, an act that left the individual deeply astonished.

He further revealed that the individual later contacted him to share the encounter, expressing surprise and seeking insight into the meaning behind the President’s gracious gesture.

To him, true statesmen are those who do not hold grudges and who extend kindness even to their adversaries, regardless of their actions.

“There was a meeting the other day where I met him and somebody. This was someone who insulted this man [Mahama] when he was in opposition. He and I had spoken about it when he was in opposition. He met this guy and the guy wasn’t sure what he would do and so, he tried to dodge him.

“But he called him and gave him a hug and when I saw it I said ‘papa wei nso’ (meaning this man).

“Then later the guy said to me that he was called and given a hug asking me what the act meant. I told him ‘it’s a sign of a statesman and that he is bigger and better than you’,” he added.

‘Mahama’s sanctions on me harsher than European Union’s sanction on Russia’

Chairman Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Bosiako has expressed his dissatisfaction over what he describes as unfair treatment meted out to him by the ruling government.

According to him, the sanctions allegedly imposed on him by the government are excessively severe, which he described as “harsher than those imposed on Russia by the European Union.”

Chairman Wontumi as he is popularly known, speaking on Asempa FM on May 23, 2025, disclosed some of the sanctions he claims have been imposed on him, specifically noting that his bank accounts have been frozen, an action he says has caused him significant challenges.

“If your accounts get frozen how do you expect to survive and even eat? The sanctions President Mahama have imposed on me are more harsher than those European Union imposed on Russia. I don’t have access to any account,” he said.

The politician based in the Ashanti Region added that he will personally honor an invitation extended to him by the police and appear at their Accra premises on Monday, May 26, 2025.

“I will go to the police headquarters because they have brought me a letter. I haven’t received any letter from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB),” he indicated.

Chairman Wontumi’s statement comes on the back of an attempted arrest by security officials at his residence on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Armed security personnel, alleged to be officials from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), reportedly stormed Chairman Wontumi’s residence. Viral videos captured the scene, showing security officials, some in police uniforms and others in plain clothes alighting from white pickup trucks.

Another video showed the supposed security officials knocking and banging at the main entrance gate of Wontumi’s home.

It is not clear why the security officials were at Wontumi’s home, but the government recently suspended the mining licence of his company, Akonta Mining, accusing it of engaging in illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

Chairman Wontumi has refuted the accusation, stating that he is being targeted because of his bid to run for the National Chairmanship position of the NPP.

Edudzi Tameklo on why Ghanaians don’t trust the judiciary

0

The Director of Legal Services for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Godwin Edudzi Tamaklo, who doubles as the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has criticised Ghana’s legal and judicial institutions for what he described as selective enforcement, double standards, and complicity in undermining public trust in the rule of law, amid the ongoing impeachment proceedings against the Chief Justice.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points programme on Saturday, May 24, 2025, Mr Tameklo described the situation as a clear case of institutional failure.

He accused the General Legal Council (GLC), the Chief Justice, and the immediate past Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame of applying the law inconsistently depending on who is involved.

Mr Tamaklo questioned the GLC’s failure to take action against Mr Dame after the release of a widely circulated recording in which the Attorney-General is alleged to be coaching an accused person on how to shape their testimony.

“The General Legal Council doesn’t need a petition to act,” he said. “Under Section 18 of the Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32), they can summon any lawyer on their own motion. In 2021, they acted against Dr Dominic Ayine without a petition. So why didn’t they act on Dame? Simple. He was untouchable.”

He claimed that at the last Bar Conference in Kumasi, the controversy had become so intense that some GLC members insisted Mr Dame should apologise before addressing the gathering.

“You heard the tape yourself, a sitting Attorney-General telling an accused person how to frame testimony. That’s a violation of Rule 54 of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 2020,” he said.

Commenting on the Chief Justice’s legal challenge seeking to disqualify Justice Gabriel Pwamang and others from sitting on the committee investigating her conduct, Mr Tamaklo said the move lacked merit and showed inconsistency in the application of legal standards.

LatexFoamPromo

“She’s claiming bias because Justice Pwamang ruled in favour of a petitioner. But in Daniel Ofori v. ECG (2023), the Supreme Court removed her from a case for the same reason, conflict of interest. That was a unanimous decision,” he said. “Now she’s doing exactly what she was once disqualified for. That’s not law, it’s desperation.”

Mr Tamaklo also questioned the attempt to remove Justice Adibu-Asiedu from the committee, noting that the Chief Justice herself empaneled him. “This is not how judicial independence works,” he said.

He also pushed back against claims that the Chief Justice could waive her right to a private hearing and opt for public proceedings, describing such arguments as flawed.

“Article 146(8) says all proceedings shall be in-camera. It doesn’t say ‘may be.’ Unlike Article 18(2), which explicitly allows a person to waive privacy rights, the framers of the Constitution deliberately left out that option in Article 146,” he said. “You can’t waive what the Constitution doesn’t permit.”

Turning to the recent police action against Alfred Kumi, the man whose petition touched on a said meeting between some members of the committee and lawyer Thaddeus Sory, Mr Tamaklo described the National Intelligence Bureau’s response as reckless and excessive.

“Kumi exaggerated claims about a so-called ‘secret dinner’ between judges. But even if his claims were untrue, does that justify 15 armed officers storming his house at dawn? This is not how you treat a citizen with a political grievance. A phone call would have sufficed,” he said.

He added that CCTV footage later showed judges and lawyers seated at separate tables in a restaurant, which he said undermined the suggestion of a planned meeting.

Mr Tamaklo concluded that the situation reflects deeper problems in the justice system that go beyond individual misconduct.

“This is why Ghanaians don’t trust the judiciary,” he said. “When a Chief Justice hires an Attorney-General caught on tape encouraging perjury, and judges apply different rules to themselves, we erode public confidence. The law must be no respecter of persons, whether you’re the Chief Justice or a market trader.”

He warned that unless legal institutions consistently follow the Constitution and their own rules, the justice system could lose its legitimacy in the eyes of the public.

“We are watching the slow corrosion of judicial credibility,” he said. “The public sees the silence, the shifting standards, and they stop believing in justice. That is the real danger.”

NPP supporters accuse government of intimidation, demand due process in Wontumi case

0

NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Antwi Boasiako 'Wontumi' NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Antwi Boasiako ‘Wontumi’

Supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi have strongly criticized the government over what they describe as targeted harassment of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The supporters allege that since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed office on January 7, 2025, Mr. Boasiako has faced a pattern of politically motivated intimidation.

They claim that such actions undermine democratic principles and are calling on President John Mahama to intervene and ensure the rule of law is upheld.

Their comments follow a raid by National Security operatives on Mr. Boasiako’s private residence at Paraku Estate in Kumasi in the early hours of Friday.

The incident drew a large crowd of NPP supporters, leading to a tense standoff between them and the security personnel, which was defused after the intervention of senior party officials.

According to sources close to Mr. Boasiako, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service had officially invited him to report for questioning on May 21.

However, the Regional Chairman responded in writing, requesting a rescheduled appearance for Monday, May 26, on health grounds.

Despite this, National Security officers proceeded to his residence this morning, days before the agreed date.

The NPP supporters insist that if the government has legitimate concerns or charges against Mr. Boasiako or any other party member, it must pursue the matter through appropriate legal channels.

They warned against the use of force or intimidation to silence dissent, stressing that such conduct poses a threat to the nation’s democratic dispensation.

Dr Bawumia explains rationale behind gold purchase progamme

0

Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia play videoFormer Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has explained the rationale behind his administration’s decision to implement the gold purchase programme.

According to him, the policy led to an increase in Ghana’s gold reserves from 8.7 tonnes to 30 tonnes.

He noted that rather than relying solely on loans, his government opted for gold, a natural resource that could be acquired with the local currency, resulting in the purchase of gold worth $5 billion within two years.

Speaking to members of the Young Executive Forum (YEF) during his Thank You Tour of the UK, the former Vice President said the move was a deliberate choice between economic sovereignty and dependency.

“$5 billion in gold or $3 billion in loans, we chose sovereignty. In two years, the Bank of Ghana had bought $5 billion worth of gold. Remember, we were going to the IMF just for $3 billion and going through all sorts of hoops. But in two years, we had bought $5 billion,” Dr Bawumia said.

He attributed the cedi’s relative stability to the gold reserves his government secured.

“We increased the gold reserves in Ghana from 8.7 tonnes to 30 tonnes. So, 65 years after independence, we only had 8.7 tonnes, but in just two years, we moved to 30. That is a big backing for the currency.

“Why I went for gold is that you don’t need to export to get gold. You need to export cocoa, timber, and oil to earn foreign exchange. But with gold, you just need to dig it out or pay for it with cedis. So it was a much easier way to do it,” he explained.

Dr Bawumia also criticised the current NDC administration, claiming they have failed to build on the gold reserves.

“People, after all the noise of the election, are paying attention to our reserves. That is one thing we built up to 30 tonnes. They have been in office so far, and they haven’t even increased it by one tonne, not a single one,” he said.

‘He Told Minority Not to Oppose Her’ — Edudzi on Mahama’s Confidence in Suspended CJ

0

The CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, Edudzi Tameklo, has shed light on the controversy surrounding the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, emphasizing President Mahama’s trust in her at the time of her nomination as reported by Ghana Web.

During an interview on TV3’s KeyPoints on May 24, 2025, Tameklo revealed that the President harbored no personal ill feelings toward the suspended Chief Justice.

He highlighted that when Justice Torkornoo was put forward for appointment, President Mahama fully supported her and even urged opposition members in Parliament not to block her confirmation.

“President Mahama had faith in Gertrude Torkornoo when she was nominated. He told the Minority not to oppose her appointment. So, when it came to her approval, it was unanimous,” Tameklo explained.

This unanimous approval at both the parliamentary committee and plenary sessions reflected the confidence placed in her leadership by the President.

However, Tameklo acknowledged that despite this initial support, the President could not have foreseen how Justice Torkornoo would perform once sworn into office.

The decision to suspend her, he clarified, was strictly a result of the petitions submitted and was not influenced by any personal considerations from the President.

“President Mahama had no way of knowing how the now-suspended Chief Justice would conduct herself while in office,” Tameklo added, revealing the separation between personal trust and official actions taken based on due process.

This statement comes amid ongoing debates and legal scrutiny over the legitimacy and reasons behind the suspension, with Tameklo’s remarks seeking to clarify the President’s stance and dispel assumptions of bias in the process.

Thaddeus Sory to Dame: And still crying, even more incongruously – Part I

0

1. Friends and family, thank you sincerely for the advice. I truly appreciate it. If I’m doing this, it’s for two reasons:

i. There are signs that the Cry Baby is learning, so there’s hope he might eventually turn around.

ii. We do not suffer spoilt children.

2. In a response to my last post, he screamed that:

i. I’m obsessed with him.

ii. My criticism of him is unethical.

iii. As Attorney-General, the judiciary has shown better steel and independence, never mind the many polls that say otherwise.

iv. I’ve distorted facts in my criticism.

v. I lost a case against him, the title of which he neither mentions nor clarifies.

vi. He never claimed that he’s never lost a case.

3. I honestly don’t believe Cry Baby wrote the response. For if he did, it’s quite incongruous how he admits I have NPP-affiliated clients, yet in an interview with Joy FM, insists that because I represent a client who has presented a petition against the Chief Justice, the petition is NDC driven? This is incongruous logic.

4. If he indeed wrote that piece, then it’s even more absurd that he forgot how, in October last year, he screamed in court that I couldn’t represent the Speaker of Parliament, then later screamed louder that I should be sanctioned for not showing up, after I heeded his own objection.

5. It is despicably incongruous that he forgets how, on each of these occasions, he went hoarse in the media, ranting about it. That’s when I decided to feed his obsession with me by giving him something to chew on. And clearly, it worked.

6. That’s why, in his last Joy FM interview, he couldn’t end without mentioning my name. That’s how Cry Baby earned my last response.

7. Every time I’ve written about him, it has been in reaction to his refusal to leave my name out of his media outbursts. My name grips him like an epileptic seizure. So again, who’s obsessed with whom? To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

8. And I’m obsessed with you? How can I be obsessed with a lawyer I taught elementary civil procedure in open court just last October?

9. Even after that a public lesson, you goofed again on the most basic principle on injunction law, and practice, prompting a judicial correction from Amadu JSC. See paragraphs 31 and 32 of his judgment in the Assafuah case.

10. And really? I’m obsessed with a lawyer whose charge against Jakpa in a case he described as “controversially decided” was exposed as flawed? Who raised the legal point the Court of Appeal upheld against you? That was me. Do not let put out the charge sheets

11. You claim the decision would have been overturned by the Supreme Court if not for the Attorney-General’s withdrawal of the appeal…. That certainty is revealing. Let me just add: the notice of appeal was incompetent. If you want to know why, I’ll be happy to explain.

12. Like the word “incongruous,” Cry Baby must have a severely warped understanding of the word “obsessed.” Imagine reaching all the way back to 2009 to dig up a case whose title you can’t even name, just to prove you beat me in court. Meanwhile, the Jakpa case was just last year. Who was Jakpa’s lawyer? You are right, that was me…

13. And to think that Cry Baby’s vocabulary warehouse stocks just one word… you know it. How could I possibly be obsessed with him, let alone jealous?

14. Did Cry Baby really say my criticism violates professional ethics? Another reason to doubt he penned that response himself.

15. What could be more unethical than a lawyer who takes to radio and social media ALL THE TIME, to prosecute his cases in public? There’s a specific rule that forbids it. See Rule 38 of our professional conduct guidelines. Yet somehow, you’ve never been sanctioned by the General Legal Council [GLC].

16. What rule says you can’t knock some sense into a Cry Baby’s head? Still waiting to be disciplined. Is it ethical for a lawyer to lose a case in the Court of Appeal and without even reading the judgment take to the radio to criticise and literally vilify the Judges? Not sure which rule covers that? Ask me, I’ll tell you.

17. Reading from the Cry Baby, you can’t help but sense his delusion. He needs a serious resetting. The entire response is an exercise in self- adulation. Reality is coming and the next parts will help him find it.

18. Once again, friends and family, sorry I had to do this. Please forgive me. It is just me being silly, but not in a hard way.

Osei Tutu SHS wins 2025 ACE Spoken Word Competition

0

Osei Tutu Senior High School has emerged as the winner at the 2025 ACE Spoken Word Competition, walking away with a cash prize of GHS 7,000.

The grand finale, held on May 23, 2025, took place at the KNUST Great Hall Auditorium in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

The Spoken Word programme focuses not only on education but also on initiatives that promote English literacy and foster confidence within local communities, particularly among students across all fields of study.

Kumasi Academy was named first runner-up, earning a cash prize of GHS 5,000. The second edition of the competition featured a compelling showdown among four finalist schools: Osei Tutu SHS, Kumasi Academy, KNUST SHS, and Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ SHS.

Organised by ACE Consult in collaboration with US Embassy, the event was themed “Volunteerism.” Marilyn Owusu, who doubles as the CEO of ACE Consult and Executive Director of American Corner-Kumasi, emphasised the importance of the initiative, highlighting how it provided a platform for young participants to express their perspectives on the value and impact of volunteer work.

“A lot of people in Ghana do things expecting to be paid, and when they aren’t, they get angry. It is the spirit of volunteerism that transforms a nation,” she stated.

Matthew K. Asada, the Press Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Accra, expressed his satisfaction with the programme.

“It’s amazing. I initially thought it might be just one person performing, but then I saw the first part—it was more theatrical… Then came the second part, which was the Q&A session, followed by the third section, which involved impromptu and improvisation. It was quite impressive,” he stated.

Sophia Akuffo calls for morality, excellence, and service to sustain Ghana’s democracy

0

Former Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia A. B. Akuffo, has issued a clarion call for a return to moral values, a pursuit of excellence, and a renewed spirit of service as the foundation for sustainable democratic governance.

Speaking at the Methodist University of Ghana to commemorate the institution’s 25th anniversary, Justice Akuffo delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the theme “Morality, Excellence and Service in Sustainable Democratic Governance.”

Drawing on decades of legal and civic experience, Justice Akuffo emphasized that democracy must be more than elections and institutions—it must be rooted in ethical leadership, civic responsibility, and national character.

We must breathe moral life into our Constitution,” she urged, warning that without a steadfast moral compass, governance risks becoming transactional, complacent, and disconnected from the people it serves.

In a wide-ranging and introspective address, the former Chief Justice challenged both citizens and leaders to reject mediocrity, corruption, and impunity, and instead build a democratic culture defined by integrity, discipline, and accountability.

Frank Asamoah shares a chilling account of how he lost his sight in a car accident play videoFrank Asamoah shares a chilling account of how he lost his sight in a car accident

Young Ghanaian, Frank Asamoah, has shared a chilling account of how he lost his sight in a devastating car accident and was mistakenly declared dead.

In an emotional interview with Zionfelix, shared on social media on May 24, 2025, Frank revealed how his dream of becoming a doctor was abruptly cut short after the accident, which also claimed the lives of several others.

Frank, then a Level 100 student at the College of Health and Well-Being in Kintampo, explained that the accident occurred after he had gone home to collect foodstuffs and a document needed for his school registration.

“My provisions had finished, so I had to return home for some. I also needed a document to attach to some files for my registration. After getting home, I decided to buy groceries for school that evening, because the journey from Kumasi to Kintampo takes about three hours, and I needed to set off at dawn,” he recounted.

“After buying the groceries, I had an accident on my way back. I didn’t see anything again. According to what my mother and eyewitnesses told me, the vehicle I was in collided with a truck. I was also told that the driver’s head was severed instantly.”

Frank went on to describe the horrifying condition of the other passengers involved.

“The head of the passenger next to me was crushed like a sardine tin. Another passenger, who was sitting in the back seat, suffered a spinal cord injury. My eyes were plucked out. Part of my brain was damaged, I lost several teeth, and the bone in my right arm was exposed,” he said.

Even more shocking was the revelation that doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital declared Frank dead upon his arrival.

“I was taken to Komfo Anokye Hospital and pronounced dead. My body was prepared and taken to the mortuary,” he said.

It was only after a mortuary attendant noticed movement that his case took a miraculous turn.

“The mortuary personnel returned to tell the doctors that I was still alive — they had observed body movements,” he added.

Frank also recounted being unconscious for an entire month.

“I was unconscious for a month. When I regained consciousness, I asked my mother if I had written my exams in school. She only told me I had malaria and was in the hospital. It was much later that I came to understand the extent of the damage I had suffered.”

Passengers split on fare cut, drivers demand reduction in goods and services

0

Transport fares to go down by 15% Transport fares to go down by 15%

Passengers and drivers at the Tema Station in Accra have expressed different opinions about the 15 per cent public transport fare reduction, which will be implemented nationwide on Saturday, May 24.

The directive aims to reflect recent reductions in fuel prices and the strengthening of the cedi, but has drawn varied responses from stakeholders.

Frederick Boakye Gyimah, the Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Burma Camp Branch, said that while drivers were informed of the directive, many were unhappy about it.

He noted that fare reductions based solely on fuel prices ignored persistent increases in spare parts and maintenance costs.

Gyimah observed that due to the low patronage at the terminal, vehicles frequently departed without being fully loaded, and feared that a full implementation of the directive would affect earnings.

He said the new fares -GH¢6.80 down to GH¢6.50 -would be applied from Monday, with passenger consultation to allow them (drivers) to maintain the partial loading of their vehicles at the terminal.

However, if passengers resisted, the full 15 per cent cut would be enforced, even if it delayed departures.

Okpoti Sowah, a driver and former union executive at La-Tema Station, echoed Gyimah’s views.

He said though, that new fares were being charged, the lack of corresponding reductions in goods and services created an imbalance.

He said notices and updated fare lists had been posted to avoid conflict with passengers.

Comfort Tackie, a trader in bags, told the Ghana News Agency that her fare from Caprice to Accra had dropped from GH¢6.00 to GH¢5.00, saying that would ease her financial burden.

She urged the government to intensify interventions in addressing Ghana’s broader economic challenges.

Samuel Okyere, a dealer in phone accessories, said that though his fare was yet to be reduced, he was pleased with the government’s decision, anticipating relief in subsequent trips.

He expressed the belief that the change would support his savings.

Solomon Boateng, a trader in sunglasses, was less optimistic, saying the impact on his finances would be negligible.

He, however, acknowledged a fare drop from GH¢7.80 to GH¢7.00 from his Dansoman, Gleeferesidence to Accra Tema Station.

Sarah Doku, a fruit and vegetable seller who commutes from Agege to Tema Station, has yet to benefit from the reduction.

As of Saturday morning, she said there was no reduction in the GH¢7.00 fare, which resulted in confrontations between passengers and drivers and their “mates”.

Although she expected traders to reduce prices to correspond to the fare reduction, she noted that any benefit from transport savings would be neutralised by lowering prices of her goods.

A joint statement by the GPRTU and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) announced the nationwide fare reduction, urging all commercial operators to comply and display revised fares at the terminals.

The statement, signed by Godfred Abulbire and Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, General Secretaries of the GPRTU and GRTCC, respectively, called on commuters and drivers to cooperate for a smooth implementation of the directive.

Pupils of Yapei Presby Primary School lie on bare floor to study

0

Pupils of Yapei Presby Primary School in the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region study on the bare floor due to the lack of furniture.

The learners are compelled to lie on their bellies or sit on the bare floor to write and study.

Yapei Presby Primary has two blocks, A and B, which have a 340 and 319 student population, respectively.

Channel One News’ visit to the school revealed that the school has been in a deplorable state, with the cemented floor in the classrooms of the school worn off, doors and windows not in good shape.

John Fuseini, PTA and SMC chairman, said they have been battling with this situation for a very long time, and some residents have shown concern by providing and assisting the school, but the situation is now unbearable.

He added that the school lacks teaching staff, which affects teaching and learning activities in the school.

“Our school lacks teachers, furniture. It also needs renovation. Indeed last three years, we did our best as PTA, but it wasn’t enough,” he said.

Abdulai Abdul Mumin, Senior Prefect of Yapei Presby Primary, is appealing to the government and stakeholders to come to their aid to help them with the furniture and a KG block.

“We are pleading with the Member of Parliament, the District Assembly and the government to support us with a classroom,” he said.

Iddi Kamil, Assembly member Yapei Electoral Area and Presiding Member Central Gonja District Assembly, indicated that the school has teachers’ bungalows, which are now a death trap which has resulted in the situation that the teachers are compelled to rent and stay far from the school, which also delays teaching and learning activities.

“The teachers do not want to stay in. It is a death trap now. Teachers resort to renting from town. Others stay far, so they come to school very late. We are calling on the government and other organisations to help us,” he said.

FDA seizes illicit tobacco products from 5 shops in Accra

0

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has seized quantities of illicit tobacco and related products during a swoop at several targeted locations in Accra.

The operation, carried out on yesterday, was aimed at clamping down on shops known for the illegal sale and distribution of tobacco products, particularly those considered attractive to the youth.

During the operation, the FDA confiscated a wide range of unapproved products from five shops.

These included shisha flavors, cigarettes, vapes, cigars, nitrous oxide canisters, and tobacco wraps.

All the products seized were either unregistered or had expired registrations, making their sale illegal under Ghanaian law.

Speaking to the media after the exercise, the Head of the Tobacco Products Department at the FDA, Mrs Jemima Odonko, underlined that the swoop formed part of activities lined up to commemorate this year’s World No Tobacco Day.

She explained that the FDA regularly undertakes such enforcement activities, but this particular one was special because of its connection to the international anti-tobacco campaign observed every year on May 31.

Mrs Odonko further emphasised the dangers of tobacco and related products, pointing out that there was no safe form of tobacco.

She warned that even synthetic alternatives, such as e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, and flavoured vapes, are equally harmful.

According to her, these products are often presented as safer options, especially to young people, but in reality, they are toxic and not approved for sale in Ghana.

Additionally, she explained that many of the products seized during the swoop had been smuggled into the country through illegal means.

“These items are often marketed in attractive packaging and with sweet flavours to appeal to young consumers, creating the false impression that they are harmless,” she stressed.

Mrs Odonko stated that the theme for this year’s World No Tobacco Day is ‘Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing the Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products.’

Moreover, she mentioned that this theme highlights how the tobacco industry continues to use deceptive tactics to promote their products, especially among the youth.

She then urged the public to be aware of these tactics and to avoid such products.

As part of the campaign, she said, the FDA also undertaking education programmes in schools to sensitise students on the dangers of tobacco and synthetic nicotine products.

Obaakrowa D/A students fear academic disruption amid rains

0

It is often said that education is the key to success, but for the students of Obaakrowa D/A Basic School, that key may be hard to turn.

In Obaakrowa, a small farming community in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, children are forced to study under trees due to the lack of classroom infrastructure.

As the rainy season approaches, concerns are growing that their already fragile learning environment could be further disrupted.

At first glance, Obaakrowa D/A Basic School in the Ga South Municipality seems to have classroom blocks. But a closer look tells a different story

Roofs are in bad shape, as a result, students from JHS 1 to JHS 3 are now forced to study under trees, in the open air, exposed to the harsh elements.

Their dreams hang in the balance. Whiteboards and school bags lean against tree trunks. With no walls to shield them and no roof above, learning happens not in classrooms, but on wooden desks set in the dust.

“When the sun shines and you are writing, it becomes really hard. Sometimes you have to push your desk to find a better spot,” a student told Channel One News

More importantly, as the rainy season sweeps across the country, bringing life to farms and empty wells, it also threatens to wash away the dreams of children in Obaakrowa, a small farming community in the Greater Accra Region.

Here, beneath the open skies and the shade of ageing trees, Students gather daily to learn not in classrooms, but on wooden desks placed in the dust. But with the rains now upon them, their fragile learning environment is on the brink of collapse. Simply, when it rains, lessons stop. When the sun is too hot, concentration drops. Whichever way, students are worried.

Malaria, cold, fungal infections, and skin rashes are just a few of the health risks students face due to prolonged exposure to harsh weather.

Assembly Member for the area, Gilbert Kwame Afekpe, has expressed deep concern about the growing health implications, especially as the rains set in.

The concern is even greater for final-year students preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Their future rests on exams they must study for outdoors.

Assembly member for the area, Gilbert Kwame Afekpe, is urging authorities to intervene, pleading for the construction of additional classrooms and a new block for the JHS and primary departments.

“I am pleading to the government and relevant authorities to come to our aid and give us support,” he said.

Let’s unite in pursuit of justice, reparations

0

President John Dramani Mahama has urged African leaders, civil society organisations, youth groups, and members of the diaspora to unite in the pursuit of justice and reparations for Africans and people of African descent.

In his Africa Day 2025 message, Mahama emphasised the need for collective action to heal historical wounds and unlock the full potential of Africa’s people.

“Let us work together to build a future where justice prevails, where the wounds of the past are healed, and where the potential of every African and person of African descent is fully realised,” he stated.

Mahama stressed that reparations are not just about financial compensation but about acknowledging the deep and lasting impact of slavery, colonialism, and neo-colonialism.

He called for official apologies from institutions responsible for historical injustices, debt relief for African nations, and the return of stolen cultural artifacts.

“We seek justice—justice that encompasses a comprehensive range of measures, including addressing the crippling debt burden that continues to stifle economic growth in many African nations, a direct consequence of exploitation and unfair trade practices,” he noted.

He also highlighted the importance of investing in education to deepen understanding of African history and contributions to the world, urging leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue and advocate tirelessly for reparatory justice.

“Let Africa Day 2025 be a turning point. Let us reaffirm our commitment to building a continent of prosperity, opportunity, and equality for all our people,” Mahama declared.

Ghana’s real economic test will be after 2026 when IMF exits – Prof Bokpin

0

Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin, an economist and finance lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, has said Ghana’s economic recovery will only be meaningful if the country maintains fiscal discipline after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme ends in 2026.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points programme on Saturday [May 24, 2025], Prof. Bokpin said that meeting IMF targets in the short term is not enough.

According to him, the real test of Ghana’s progress will come in the years after the programme ends, when external oversight is no longer in place.

“The real test is not whether we meet the IMF targets this year or next,” he said. “The real test is whether, in 2027 and 2028, when the IMF is no longer watching, we will uphold the same standards. That is what determines whether the progress is real or temporary.”

Ghana is currently implementing a US$3 billion Extended Credit Facility with the IMF. The three-year programme began in 2023 and is aimed at stabilising the economy following a period of high inflation, rising debt levels, and sharp depreciation of the cedi. It is expected to conclude in the first quarter of 2026.

Prof Bokpin noted that past experience suggests Ghana often loses discipline shortly after exiting IMF support, particularly in election years. He said the temptation to overspend ahead of the 2028 general elections could once again undo hard-won progress unless safeguards are put in place.

“When the IMF is here, we follow the rules. But when they leave, we tend to abandon them—especially in election years,” he said. “If we don’t build in protection against political interference, we’ll end up where we started.”

Prof Bokpin acknowledged that the 2025 budget contains signs of recovery, including a projected turnaround from a primary deficit of 3 per cent in 2024 to a surplus of 1.5 per cent. But he warned that these gains are not guaranteed to last.

LatexFoamPromo

“These numbers are promising, but they don’t guarantee anything,” he said. “The real issue is whether we can keep it up when the Fund is no longer around. That’s where we usually fall short.”

On the performance of the cedi, Dr. Bokpin observed that recent improvements may be temporary, driven largely by short-term interventions. “A $20 million forex demand can swing the market,” he said. “We can’t mistake temporary stability for long-term recovery.”

He maintained that without long-lasting reforms that withstand political pressure, the country risks falling back into economic distress once the IMF’s supervision ends.

Defiant traders storm streets, pavements to sell after AMA’s decongestion activities

0

Traders are back selling on the streets after decongestion exercise Traders are back selling on the streets after decongestion exercise

Traders operating in Accra have defied official directives by returning to sell on the streets and pavements, following a five-day decongestion exercise carried out by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) under the leadership of the Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey.

According to a report by 3news.com, the defiant traders appear to have reclaimed the streets, setting up their items for sale despite the recent decongestion efforts.

Areas around the AMA head office to the Ghana School of Law and the Makola Fire Station, which were previously cleared by the task force, have now been reoccupied by traders, with no visible presence of AMA task force officers to enforce the directive.

According to the report, this situation has led to renewed congestion and traffic for both vehicles and pedestrians attempting to navigate the affected streets.

Similar scenes were observed at other commercial hotspots, including Tudu, Kimbu, Kaneshie, and Nkrumah Circle, where traders appeared to have resumed their activities without any restrictions.

The decongestion exercise, which the mayor assured would not be a short-lived initiative, initially received widespread public approval for its efforts.

Although traders appeared to comply with the directives at the beginning of the exercise despite some resistance, they now seem to have returned to selling on the streets.

The exercise which kickstarted on May 20, 2025, was aimed at clearing unauthorised trading activities on pavements and streets across major parts of the Central Business District.

NDC has done in 5 months what we have demanded since COVID – Prof Bokpin

Professor Godfred Bokpin is an Economist Professor Godfred Bokpin is an Economist

An economist, Professor Godfred Bokpin, has noted that the current government has demonstrated a commendable level of fiscal discipline in its first few months in office.

According to him, this is evident in the recent appreciation of the local currency against major foreign currencies on the market.

He observed that the previous NPP administration engaged in excessive spending, which contributed to the collapse of the economy.

Professor Bokpin stated that the NDC’s fiscal discipline has resulted in a GH¢10 billion reduction in national expenditure compared to 2024.

The cedi has been appreciating against major foreign currencies in recent weeks, trading below GH¢11 as of May 23, 2025.

“If you look at what the economy has been through in the last three years, the excess liquidity injection came from high expenditure. We have seen this government do within five months what we’ve been calling for since COVID-19 (2020–2025). Since COVID, we’ve said we need to cut wasteful spending and pursue gradual fiscal consolidation to ease the pain, but that didn’t happen,” he said as quoted by 3news.com

The economist attributed the recent gains to effective leadership by the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama.

“You can see leadership at the highest level. These are painful choices, but they are producing results,” Professor Bokpin added.

How to Style Palazzo Pants for a Chic Look

0

Palazzo pants are the epitome of comfort meeting style. With their wide-leg design and breezy fit, they can be dressed up or down effortlessly. Here’s how to style them for a chic, polished look:

1. Choose the Right Fit and Fabric:

Opt for high-waisted palazzo pants in structured fabrics like crepe, linen, or satin. These add elegance and help elongate the legs.

2. Pair with a Fitted Top:

Since palazzos are flowy, balance the silhouette with a fitted blouse, crop top, bodysuit, or tucked-in shirt to define your waist.

3. Add Layers:

A sleek blazer or a cropped jacket instantly adds sophistication, especially for office or formal outings.

4. Accessorize Smartly:

Statement earrings, a bold clutch, or a classy belt can elevate your outfit without overpowering it.

5. Footwear Matters:

Heels or wedges work best to give you height and keep the pants from dragging. Pointed-toe shoes also add a refined touch.

6. Try Monochrome or Prints:

A monochromatic look is effortlessly chic, while prints (floral, geometric) can add fun and personality—just keep the top simple if the pants are bold.

Drivers defy GPRTU fare reduction directive, cite high operating costs

0

Most commercial drivers in the Ashanti Region have defied the GPRTU’s directive to reduce transport fares, as announced by the transport union.

According to the drivers, the 15% fare reduction can only be implemented starting Monday, May 26.

During Citi News’ visit to several transport terminals, the majority of drivers were still charging the old fares, with only a few having implemented the reduction.

While those yet to adjust their fares assured that they would comply from Monday, those who had already reduced theirs expressed dissatisfaction with the directive, citing the high cost of spare parts and vehicle maintenance.

The 15% reduction was announced by the GPRTU as part of efforts to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians, following the recent appreciation of the cedi and a drop in fuel prices.

Solomon Frimpong, a commercial driver, said, “We are waiting for the new fares from our leadership before we can reduce them; until then, we are going by the old fares.”

John Mensah, another commercial driver, said, “We have reduced our fares, but we are not happy with the new fares because they’re not helping us.

The prices of spare parts are still the same, so this reduction is going to affect the drivers.”

Abuakwa South MP champions STEM with Maths and Science Quiz for basic schools

0

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South Constituency, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, is expanding the frontiers of his transformative educational initiative aimed at equipping young learners with a strong foundation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The annual Kingsley Maths and Science Quiz, now a flagship academic competition within the constituency, brings together all Junior High Schools (JHS) in the area to compete in a spirited display of intellect and innovation.

Now in its sixth year, the competition continues to positively impact thousands of pupils across 78 Junior High Schools and 92 primary schools, spanning both public and private institutions and school for the deaf within the constituency.

Since its inception six years ago, the competition has significantly improved learning outcomes across the constituency specifically in Maths, Science and spelling for primary school pupils.

Municipal Director of education for the Abuakwa South Municipality Comfort Ofori Appiah, hailed the initiative as a powerful catalyst for driving positive learning outcomes across the municipality.

According to her, the competition is having a direct and measurable impact on Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results.

“In our 2024 BECE results, all our top performers for the municipality were contestants from the quarter-finals to the finals. They all performed excellently. The same can be said for the years before. This shows there is a direct correlation between the quizzes and learning outcomes,” she revealed.

Madam Ofori Appiah expressed particular satisfaction at seeing schools like Asiakwa R/C Primary School and Apedwa Presby JHS rise to the top and emerge as champions.

She explained that, “These were not schools that made it to the top in the past, and for these schools to start making it to the top means the impact is reaching the grassroots, and now, every school wants to be part of it.”

It came to light that some of the early participants have advanced to represent their schools in the prestigious National Science and Maths Quiz at the secondary level. Their academic excellence has even earned a few of them admission into top-tier universities in the United States, including Memphis University.

According to Dr. Agyemang, the competition is designed to give students an early head start in STEM education, a field he believes is key to Ghana’s future.

“The world is moving towards STEM. For the next generation to actually become useful in this space and contribute meaningfully to our country’s development, they need preparation that goes beyond normal classroom tuition,” he said.

“Through this competition, students enhance their understanding of core concepts in maths and science”, Dr. Kinglsey Agyemang explained.

The MP added that his vision is to build the capacity of young students in the constituency so they can confidently compete with peers from top-tier institutions both locally and internationally.

Over the years, Dr. Agyemang has consistently funded the competition in partnership with the Abuakwa South Municipal Education Office, ensuring the initiative’s sustainability. Beyond financial support, he has also consistently provided essential learning materials to help participating schools adequately prepare for the challenge.

This year’s 2025 edition of the competition ended on a high note with Asiakwa R/C Primary School and Apedwa Presby JHS emerging as champions of the Kingsley Spelling Challenge and Kingsley Maths and Science Quiz, respectively.

Addressing the finalists at the closing ceremony, Dr. Agyemang applauded their determination and excellence.

He noted, “We are incredibly proud of your achievements and the spirit of excellence you have displayed throughout the competition. Keep soaring higher.”

The impact of the initiative is already being felt by students, parents, and educators alike. One contestant shared how the competition has transformed her confidence and academic approach.

“This competition has helped build my confidence level to speak publicly and also confront difficult topics with a lot of flair. I know that others like me, who couldn’t stand to speak in front of people, are getting a lot from this competition and I can only thank our MP for starting this.”

A parent also praised the initiative, saying,

“Since my son started participating in the quiz, I can see a real change in his appreciation of what he is being taught in school. This is what we need for our kids in the Abuakwa South Constituency.”

Municipal Director of Education, Madam Comfort Ofori Appiah, also appealed to other benevolent organizations to come on board and partner with the initiative to expand its reach, ensuring the next generation of thinkers is adequately prepared for the future of both the municipality and the country at large.

“I must commend the MP for starting this initiative. It is a laudable one, but of course, others can still come on board to support the initiative in any way to help us enroll more schools so that every child can benefit.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Agyemang revealed that more educational interventions are in the pipeline to boost literacy levels across the constituency. He also announced plans to collaborate with international investors, particularly from Hollywood, to establish Africa’s biggest movie studio and AI centre in Abuakwa South, a move he believes will open up even more opportunities for the youth.

Through this bold and consistent investment in education, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang believes he is nurturing the next generation of thinkers, innovators, and leaders, sowing good seeds today for a brighter tomorrow.

Djokovic makes more history with 100th singles title

0

The Geneva Open is Djokovic’s first title since winning a long-awaited Olympic gold in August 2024

A battling Novak Djokovic made another bit of tennis history as he clinched his 100th ATP singles title with a comeback victory over Hubert Hurkacz in Geneva.

Serbia’s Djokovic, who has won almost all there is in tennis, is just the third man in the Open era to achieve the feat after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer.

The 38-year-old had won all seven of his previous matches against Poland’s Hurkacz but had to grind out victory this time around, coming from a break down in the third set to win 5-7 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-2).

Djokovic’s children ran onto the court afterwards to congratulate their father, with wife Jelena watching in the stands.

“I had to work for it, that’s for sure,” he admitted. “Hubi was probably closer to the victory the entire match than I was.

“An incredible match with a full stadium, a beautiful atmosphere. I’m just grateful to clinch the 100th here.”

Victory also gave Djokovic some welcome time on the clay, with the French Open beginning on Sunday.

He arrived in Geneva without a win on the surface, having lost his first match in four of his past five tournaments.

A relieved Djokovic now travels to Paris – where he will face American Mackenzie McDonald in the first round – with his bid for a standalone record 25th Grand Slam title firmly on track.

However, it remains to be seen how quickly he will recover from a final lasting three hours and eight minutes.

Novak Djokovic was competing in his second ATP Tour final of the year

This is Djokovic’s first title since Olympic gold in Paris last year – and marks a high point in a difficult year for the tennis great.

His run to the Australian Open semi-finals was ended by injury before his first attempt to claim his 100th title was ended by Czech teenager Jakub Mensik in the Miami Open showpiece.

The clay season has been particularly tricky as Djokovic lost his opening matches in Monte Carlo and Madrid in straight sets before opting out of the Italian Open.

A split with coach Andy Murray followed, but deciding to take a wildcard to Geneva has paid off as Djokovic has improved in each match, with his serving and returning in particular going up a notch.

Much of the packed crowd in Geneva were on his side and it was the Serb who had the first break opportunities at 2-2.

But Hurkacz, a big server making his way back to form after a serious knee injury at Wimbledon last year, produced aces and service winners at the crucial times to keep him at bay.

In truth, it was Djokovic’s errors, rather than excellent play from his opponent, that decided the first set. Serving to force a tie-break, an unfortunate net cord gave Hurkacz his first break point of the set – and a dreadful double fault from Djokovic handed it over.

Every Hurkacz service game of the second set seemed to go to deuce, with Djokovic constantly pushing for an opening, but his uncharacteristic errors allowed his 28-year-old opponent to wriggle free – much to Djokovic’s wry amusement.

The Serb upped his level in the tie-break, smashing a winner to force a deciding set, but it was Hurkacz who broke at the start of the third.

Service games rattled by from both players before the Pole played a dreadful game at 4-3 up. With Hurkacz’s body tight and arm full of tension, an error handed Djokovic the break back, with the world number six shaking his racquet in celebration.

A tie-break felt almost inevitable and once again, Djokovic ran away with it, before sealing the success with an ace.

The two shared a warm hug at the net before a visibly upset Hurkacz covered his head with his towel as the victor thanked the crowd.

‘Mahama’s sanctions on me harsher than European Union’s sanction on Russia’

Ports to become more efficient, business-friendly – GHPA Director-General

The meeting provided a platform to update stakeholders on ongoing improvements The meeting provided a platform to update stakeholders on ongoing improvements

The Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Brigadier General Paul Seidu Tanye Kulono, has reiterated the Authority’s commitment to improving the ease of doing business at Ghana’s ports.

Addressing a section of port stakeholders during an engagement session, Brigadier General Tanye Kulono emphasized GPHA’s resolve to make port operations more efficient, less cumbersome, and cost-effective for the trading community.

The meeting provided a platform to update stakeholders on ongoing improvements, exchange ideas on trade facilitation, and gather feedback aimed at enhancing service delivery across the ports.

As part of infrastructure upgrades, the Director-General announced plans to dredge the Port of Tema by the end of the first quarter of 2026. This, he explained, would significantly improve vessel turnaround time.

He also disclosed that GPHA has taken delivery of 15 out of 30 trucks acquired to assist in evacuating containers from MPS Terminal 3 to Terminal 2. This intervention, he noted, has already reduced container backlog from nearly 5,000 to 993 as of last week.

He expressed optimism that all backlogs would be cleared by the end of the month, and assured that going forward, importers can expect container transfers from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2 to be completed within three days.

Brigadier General Tanye Kulono urged the trading community to cooperate by clearing their goods promptly to sustain the gains being made.

On infrastructure challenges, he acknowledged the poor state of roads leading to the port and assured stakeholders that reconstruction works would commence soon. He appealed for patience and understanding during the period of construction and any inconvenience it may cause.

The President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr. Joseph Obeng, commended the Director-General for engaging stakeholders and pledged GUTA’s unwavering support towards GPHA’s ongoing efforts.

“Business thrives on trade facilitation, and the Port Authority plays a pivotal role in that. It’s about reducing time, cost, and bottlenecks in port operations. The trading community stands ready to support you fully in this mission,” Dr. Obeng stated.

No one can silence me – Lilwin breaks silence after he was asked to stop filming movie

In a bold declaration of artistic integrity, popular actor Lilwin has reaffirmed his commitment to producing a biopic centered on the life of Ibrahim Traore, a notable revolutionary figure from Burkina Faso. This stance comes in the wake of attempts by unnamed individuals to halt the film’s production, including a reported offer of $2,000 to persuade Lilwin to abandon the project.

In a recently released video, Lilwin detailed the pressure he faced, revealing that representatives allegedly connected to Burkina Faso approached him with demands to cease filming and vacate the set. However, the actor made it clear that he would not compromise his vision for the film. He recounted how he initially accepted the money but later returned it, asserting that the integrity of the story was paramount.

“I respect and love the people of Burkina Faso and Traoré,” Lilwin emphasized in his address. “This story needs to be told.” His resolve highlights not only his dedication to the film but also his belief in the importance of sharing narratives that reflect resilience, identity, and heroism.

The biopic has already begun to generate considerable buzz within the entertainment industry and among audiences eager for authentic representations of African history. As the film aims to shed light on Traore’s life and legacy, it has attracted both supporters who laud Lilwin’s initiative and critics who question the film’s portrayal of sensitive historical themes.

Despite the opposition, Lilwin appears more determined than ever to bring the project to fruition. His passion for storytelling and commitment to honoring Traore’s contributions to African history underscore the significance of the biopic in today’s cultural landscape.

As discussions surrounding the film continue to evolve, Lilwin’s actions serve as a powerful reminder of the challenges artists often face in their pursuit of truth and representation. The unfolding narrative of his biopic not only reflects the complexities of filmmaking but also speaks to broader themes of resistance and the importance of diverse voices in cinema.

‘This cannot be entertained’ – Minority criticises Mahama over silence on statutory funds

0

The Minority in Parliament is accusing the Mahama administration of unlawfully starving key institutions of funds nearly six months into his presidency.

The caucus warns that the continued delay in releasing statutory allocations is crippling local governance and social services.

At a fiery press conference in Parliament, Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, blasted the government for what he described as a blatant disregard for the law.

“It is surprising that for almost six months, out of the allocation of GH¢7.7 billion, not even a penny has gone to the assemblies,” he said.

He cited Act 936 of the Local Governance Act and a court ruling mandating quarterly disbursements. “This is a breach of the law,” he declared.

According to him, over GH¢7.5 billion was allocated to the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) in the 2024 Budget, yet the Assemblies remain dry.

“The whole of this year, not even a penny has been paid,” he stressed. He claimed the newly appointed Common Fund Administrator is “sitting idle” and confirmed checks at the fund secretariat revealed no disbursements.

Annoh-Dompreh didn’t stop there. He said the National Health Insurance Fund, which was allocated GH¢9.92 billion, has also received nothing.

“My check tells me no amount has been paid,” he said. “Then there’s GETFund. A GH¢4.1 billion allocation was made. Again, nothing has been paid.”

Even Parliament, he revealed, had not received its own second-quarter releases. “Before we started this press conference, I checked the accounts. Nothing has been paid.”

He said these statutory funds are “the oxygen” of the Assemblies. “You cannot cite any reason as a defence. It’s mandatory. It’s backed by law.”

Frank Annoh-Dompreh took direct aim at Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

“The framers of our laws, in their wisdom, tagged these payments as statutory because they relate to basic necessities of life—health, education, and local governance. And once they are statutory, they must be respected.”

He questioned the government’s logic in collecting new taxes while ignoring legally mandated disbursements.

“The Growth and Sustainability Levy was increased from 1% to 3%. VAT on non-life insurance has also been increased,” he said.

“You’ve introduced taxes, you’ve collected these taxes, and yet you are flouting the statutory payments the law mandates you to pay.”

Mr Annoh-Dompreh accused the government of deliberately holding back on expenditure to give the false impression of economic stability.

“Is it the case that we want the books to look good, the cedi to look strong, and therefore we won’t spend?” he asked. “We are sounding a note of caution.”

He warned that the impact on citizens is already severe.

“Persons with disabilities, poverty reduction, boreholes, support to farmers, needy but brilliant children—these are what the common fund supports. The effect is broad, far-reaching, and grinding.”

He also raised red flags over the non-payment of the Social Investment Fund.

“Not even a penny has been paid. And I challenge them. The provisions, the allocated funds, are all in the budget.”

Frank Annoh-Dompreh said the administration was abusing the goodwill of its first year.

“They do all the evil things in their first year while enjoying goodwill. But statutory payments cannot be categorised as one of your evil deeds.”

“This cannot be entertained,” he warned.

“We will continue to speak to the issues and raise the concerns. It’s about the welfare of our people. It’s about the breach of our laws. And it’s not for nothing that these laws were passed—they are passed to be respected.”
