President Mahama calls for unity to tackle Africa’s debt crisis

0

President John Mahama has called for a united Africa to enable the continent to address its escalating debt crisis, adding that unsustainable borrowing risks undermining development gains and sovereignty.

Delivering a keynote speech at the African Union (AU) High-Level Conference on Debt in Lomé, Togo, yesterday, the President described Africa’s debt burden as a “paradox of need and vulnerability,” with countries spending more on debt servicing than on health and education combined.

“Let us act not as debtors pleading for relief, but as partners demanding reform. Africa, united, can turn debt into opportunity,” he said.

Citing data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), the President said 22 African nations were at high risk of debt distress, while debt-to-GDP ratio in sub-Saharan Africa had surged from 40 per cent in 2015, to over 60 per cent in 2025.

In 2024 alone, African governments spent $90 billion on debt repayments, nearly double the amount received in foreign aid.

“Debt can be a catalyst for transformation, but it can also be a source of fiscal fragility and lost sovereignty if not well managed,” he said.

Reflecting on Ghana’s situation, President Mahama said that while the country reduced its debt from 100 per cent to 30 per cent of GDP under the HIPC initiative in the early 2000s, reckless borrowing and external shocks, including COVID-19 and global inflation, pushed debt back to 90.7 per cent by 2022.

He said interest payments alone consumed 47 per cent of the government’s revenue in 2023, describing the country’s $5.4 billion debt restructuring deal in 2024 as a critical but “painful” step towards recovery.

The President outlined three key lessons from Ghana’s experience, emphasising the need for timely creditor engagement to prevent deeper crises, aligning multilateral support with domestic priorities, and ensuring debt sustainability through strong governance rather than just focusing on ratios.

Continental strategy

President Mahama also proposed a three-pillar continental strategy to tackle the debt challenge.

First, he stressed the importance of transparency, noting that less than 40 per cent of African nations published detailed debt reports.

Second, the President advocated productive borrowing, urging African countries to focus on high-impact sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy and digital infrastructure.

Third, he called for global financial reforms, demanding fairer credit ratings and expanded roles for African institutions such as the AfDB and Afreximbank.

The President then urged African leaders to explore innovative solutions such as debt-for-climate swap, modelled after Barbados, to fund green projects, as well as green and blue bonds for sustainable development.

He also emphasised the need for stronger tax systems and domestic capital markets to reduce the reliance on foreign loans.

President Mahama criticised the slow progress under the G20 Common Framework, noting that only three of the five African applicants had seen tangible debt relief and, therefore, called for faster and more equitable restructuring processes.

He rallied his colleagues to adopt a Common African Position for the 2025 G20 Summit, establish standardised debt transparency benchmarks across the AU, and fully operationalise the African Monetary Institute and the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) to boost intra-African trade.

Cote d’Ivoire: Thiam Resigns as President of the Opposition PDCI Party

0

Tidjane Thiam has announced his resignation as president of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire – African Democratic Rally (PDCI-RDA), due, in his words, to the “judicial harassment” he is facing, reports allAfrica.fr.

The announcement was made in a video posted last night on social media, while a trial, in which a PDCI activist is questioning the legality of his election as party leader in December 2023, continues.

Thiam’s party held a Political Bureau meeting on Monday morning in Abidjan to officially appoint an interim president. In another video posted on social media, Ernest N’Koumo Mobio claims to be assuming this role.

For more details on Thiam’s announcement in French, click here.

Tidjane Thiam was removed from the electoral roll by a court ruling on April 22, six months before the next presidential election, because he had lost his Ivorian nationality, according to one of his lawyers. This decision, which is not subject to appeal, for the time being closes the door on Tidjane Thiam’s candidacy in the October 25 presidential election.

Ghana’s fragile economy: A delicate balance

0

The recent assessment by the global ratings agency S&P describing Ghana’s economy as “stable but fragile,” underscores the need for policymakers to tread carefully to sustain the current growth trajectory.

As we navigate the complexities of our economic landscape, it is imperative to acknowledge both the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead.

The recent uptick in gold export receipts and improved foreign exchange reserves are positive indicators, driven in part by the government’s efforts to regulate the artisanal mining sector and boost export earnings.

However, underlying vulnerabilities threaten to undermine these gains. High inflation, stubbornly above the Bank of Ghana’s target band of eight plus or minus two, continues to erode consumer purchasing power and business profitability.

The cedi’s short-term stability, attributed to the managed float regime, may not persist as structural imbalances and fiscal constraints reassert themselves. Moreover, Ghana’s debt burden remains substantial, with interest costs projected to remain elevated, posing a risk to currency stability and long-term fiscal consolidation.

The country’s ongoing IMF-supported fiscal reforms aim to strike a balance between capital investments and critical social spending, but tight fiscal space constrains policymaking.

In this context, S&P’s upgrade of Ghana’s credit ratings from ‘SD’ to ‘CCC+’ reflects progress in restructuring debt. The debt overhaul has reduced Ghana’s debt service burden, but even modest currency depreciation could quickly inflate debt service obligations and fiscal deficits. Policymakers must prioritise measures to support the private sector, enhance revenue mobilisation and promote sustainable economic growth.

The recent surge in foreign exchange reserves, driven by a favourable current account balance, presents an opportunity to rebuild buffers and stabilise the economy. With the current account recording its largest surplus on record in 2024, reaching $3.58 billion or 4.4 per cent of GDP, Ghana can leverage this momentum to drive economic growth.

The value of gold exports rose by 53.2 per cent due to increases in both volume and price, while net remittance flows increased 34.1 per cent.

However, the economy still faces significant challenges. The banking sector, though recapitalised in 2023, shows signs of strain, with non-performing loans rising to 21.8 per cent by end-2024.

The sector remains adequately capitalised, but credit risk persists. Furthermore, political uncertainty and social policy developments, including the controversial “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values” bill, pose potential headwinds for the economy.

For the Graphic Business, as Ghana navigates this delicate balance, policymakers, businesses and citizens must work together to address the country’s economic challenges. By prioritising sustainable economic growth, promoting economic diversification and maintaining fiscal discipline, we can build a more resilient economy and secure a brighter future for generations to come.

To achieve this, the government must implement structural reforms to improve the business environment, enhance infrastructure, and promote private sector growth. Additionally, efforts to improve revenue mobilisation and reduce debt vulnerabilities are crucial to ensuring long-term fiscal sustainability.

The private sector also has a critical role to play in driving economic growth and job creation. Businesses must invest in innovation, productivity and human capital to remain competitive in a rapidly changing global economy.

Ultimately, Ghana’s economic future depends on the collective efforts of its citizens, policymakers and businesses. By working together, we can overcome the current fragilities and build a more stable and prosperous future for all Ghanaians.

The challenge ahead is daunting, but with prudent economic management and a shared vision for the future, Ghana can achieve sustainable economic growth and improve the living standards of its citizens.

Was the 2025 TGMA red carpet a ‘flop’ after strictly by-invitation policy? – Critics weigh in

From L to R: Fashion critic Charlie Dior, and entertainment personality Nana Romeo From L to R: Fashion critic Charlie Dior, and entertainment personality Nana Romeo

The just-ended 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), held on May 10, 2025, has sparked massive discussion among entertainment lovers in Ghana and beyond.

While the main event showcased performances and award wins, one focal point remains the red carpet; a space traditionally known for glitz, glamour, and high fashion.

Hosted at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, this year’s TGMAs drew guests from all walks of life.

However, in an attempt to restore order and prestige to the red carpet, organisers Charterhouse implemented a strictly by-invitation policy, aiming to reduce crowding and improve the quality of appearances.

This move came after heavy criticism in recent years, especially in 2024, when many felt the red carpet had become overcrowded with influencers and non-industry personalities.

So, with this new policy in place, did the red carpet live up to expectations in 2025?

‘It was a big flop’ – Fashion critic Charlie Dior

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s Joseph Henry Mensah, fashion critic Charlie Dior didn’t mince words. According to him, despite the exclusive approach, the fashion on display was underwhelming.

“When I heard the TGMA red carpet would be strictly by invitation, I was happy. I felt someone had finally listened because in past years it’s been chaotic, you didn’t need to be there to know it was a mess,” he said.

He went on to compare the event unfavourably to international standards, stating:

“Comparing the TGMA red carpet to New York Fashion Week, which I’ve attended, is like comparing Makola to Manhattan. It was a big flop, they just weren’t willing to invest. I’d rather spend the day at Makola, at least you’d get something to drink there. I’d rate it 1 out of 10.”

Charlie Dior also attributed the poor fashion choices to a lack of incentive:

“There’s no motivation for these celebrities to spend money on their looks. Charterhouse should consider offering a prize for ‘Best Dressed’ to encourage more effort and creativity.”

“Where was the change we were promised?” – Nana Romeo

Media personality and entertainment pundit Nana Romeo echoed similar sentiments.

Speaking to GhanaWeb, he criticised the overall execution of the red carpet, stating that the strictly by-invitation promise failed to deliver on its intended impact.

“They moved the red carpet to a separate hall this year, so I expected something better. But when I got there, it was as crowded as ever, with bloggers and people dressed casually. I didn’t see the elegance or spectacle we were all hoping for,” he said.

On fashion, he added: “Honestly, this year’s red carpet was too ordinary. People were wearing regular suits and kaftans. Where was the wow factor? Where was the promised change? I’d give it a 6 out of 10.”

Meanwhile, despite Charterhouse’s efforts to rebrand and elevate the TGMA red carpet experience, it appears that critics believe more needs to be done, particularly in terms of investment, organisation, and motivation for attendees to bring their fashion A-game.

MPS Terminal 3 welcomes record-breaking ultra-large vessels

0

MSC TÜRKIYE, one of the largest vessels ever to berth at a port MSC TÜRKIYE, one of the largest vessels ever to berth at a port

Ghana’s maritime industry has reached a historic milestone with the arrival of the MSC TÜRKIYE, one of the largest vessels ever to berth at a port in the sub-Saharan region.

This landmark event occurred just one week after the arrival of another ultra-large vessel, the MSC DILETTA, at the Meridian Port Services (MPS) Terminal 3 at the Port of Tema.

The occasion was graced by dignitaries, including government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and leading business executives.

The Managing Director of MSC Ghana, Garmy Sy, expressed her excitement at the development and reaffirmed the company’s long-standing commitment to Ghana’s maritime growth.

“The arrival of the 24,000 TEU ultra-large container vessels on Africa’s coasts is not just a major achievement for our company, but a testament to our commitment to enhancing trade infrastructure, fostering economic growth across the continent and contributing to local prosperity,” she stated.

Sy noted that the presence of such vessels represents development, job creation and sustainable growth for Ghana. She added that MSC has been active in Africa for 50 years and in Ghana for 17 years, and “today’s deployment marks the next major step in this journey”.

Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, reaffirmed the government’s dedication, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, to advancing the maritime sector.

“MPS has become a model of successful partnership in Ghana,” he said. “I urge all government stakeholders to emulate MPS by creating an enabling environment for business growth.”

He further assured the shipping industry and prospective investors that “Ghana possesses the facilities, expertise and human resources necessary to meet all your trade and logistics needs. Under this government, we are determined to transform the overall business climate.”

The Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Brigadier-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, commended the port and marine workforce for safely manoeuvring and berthing the giant vessel.

“This achievement results from the strategic partnership between MPS and the Government of Ghana. The terminal is more than just concrete and steel—it represents jobs created, businesses expanded and countless lives uplifted through faster and more competitive trade. It symbolises Ghana’s readiness to embrace the future,” he said.

Vice President for MSC’s Far East to Sub-Saharan Africa region, Gilbert Capoellini, highlighted the significance of the MSC TÜRKIYE’s deployment, indicating that it stands as a major enhancement for services to West Africa.

“Deployed on the MSC Africa Express Service, the MSC TÜRKIYE connects Asia’s powerhouse economies to West Africa’s emerging economic hubs. This upgraded service charts a course through China, South Korea and Singapore before arriving in West Africa, with Tema proudly standing as her first port of call,” he explained.

Chief Executive Officer of Meridian Port Services Ltd., Mohammed Samara, reflected on the vision laid out nearly a decade ago.

“In 2015, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, we envisioned infrastructure capable of handling ultra-large vessels. Today, that vision is alive as we welcome one of the world’s largest ships,” he said.

“To our trade and industry stakeholders, our motto is: ‘We connect, you thrive’. We are opening access to markets beyond Ghana—from Angola to Mauritania—with greater efficiency. Our design criteria is focused on durability and scalability for the next hundred years, cutting transit times from Asia to Tema from 40–50 days to under 20 days,” he concluded.

Sammy Gyamfi was being kind, but Agradaa can’t be categorised as needy – Sammy Anim Addo

President of Young Apostles FC, Sammy Anim Addo, has defended the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, amid a social media uproar over a viral video showing him gifting US dollars to controversial preacher Nana Agradaa.

Recently, in a video shared on X , Sammy Gyamfi was seen posing for a photo beside his Range Rover with Nana Agradaa, who had her arm around him.

The video showed him opening the back door of the vehicle and counting several dollar notes, reportedly in response to a comment made by Agradaa.

This footage has since sparked massive backlash, with many criticising Sammy Gyamfi for giving money to Agradaa, an individual often embroiled in controversy.

However, sharing his thoughts on this, Anim Addo believes the criticisms are unjustified.

“Why this rush to vilify and crucify such a brilliant young politician?

“I believe Sammy’s gesture to that woman wasn’t for clout, acted with a good heart, simply wanting to show his kindness. Though Agradaa can’t be categorised as needy, she clearly had her own motives,” he said.

According to Anim Addo, public trust issues surrounding politicians often lead to even well-meaning actions being harshly judged, especially when they involve personalities like Nana Agradaa.

“Public perception of politicians is shaped by broader trust issues. Even well-intentioned acts can be scrutinised when they involve controversial figures like Agradaa. Sammy, as a public figure, might have underestimated how his actions could be weaponised, especially in today’s hyper-connected social media era,” he said.

He also condemned the act of filming the moment, calling it a breach of privacy, and urged the public to move on from the incident.

“The blogger filming inside the car? That’s a blatant invasion of privacy. Who hasn’t kept some money in their car to help someone on the spot? Let’s be real, nobody’s perfect. We should accept his apology and move on, not blow this out of proportion,” he said.

NDC youth clash with Annoh-Dompreh over MCE confirmation in Nsawam-Adoagyiri

0

The confrontation stemmed from Annoh-Dompreh’s attempt to oversee the process as a polling agent

A tense standoff unfolded at the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly as Member of Parliament (MP) Frank Annoh-Dompreh faced opposition from National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth during the confirmation process of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee.

According to myjoyonline.com report, the confrontation stemmed from Annoh-Dompreh’s attempt to oversee the voting process as a polling agent, a move that was fiercely resisted by regional NDC executives led by one Dr Mark Oliver Kevor.

Reports ahead of the election suggested that Annoh-Dompreh was determined to block the confirmation of Philibert Fumey Selorm, the nominee who had previously contested against him in the 2024 parliamentary elections, a legal battle that eventually ended in court.

The report added that, as tensions rose inside the assembly hall, clashes erupted between supporters of the MP and those backing the nominee.

The situation remained volatile throughout the voting process, with security personnel closely monitoring developments.

After ballots were cast, police officers formed a security barrier around election officials as they counted the votes. Ultimately, the nominee secured confirmation with 29 votes out of 38, despite the dramatic scenes that preceded the results.

The announcement triggered further agitation among NDC supporters, who demanded access to Annoh-Dompreh and threatened retaliation. Police swiftly intervened, escorting the MP under heavy security to the municipal NADMO office as furious protesters attempted to follow.

ActionAid Ghana to convene national dialogue to demand fair financing May 14

0

As Ghana stands on the brink of a deepening development crisis fueled by unsustainable debt, illicit financial flows, and shrinking donor support, ActionAid Ghana is taking a bold step forward by convening a National Civil Society Dialogue and Mobilisation on the Financing for Development (F4D) on 14th May 2025 in Accra.

This high-stakes Dialogue is more than an event—it is a rallying cry for justice, bringing together leading voices in civil society to confront the exploitative financial systems and global inequalities that continue to undermine Ghana’s progress.

With over US$138 billion paid by low-income countries in debt servicing last year alone—money that should have gone into education, healthcare, and climate resilience, the need for action has never been more urgent.

Ghana’s own debt reached GH¢608 billion by the end of 2023, a staggering 35.9% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, public services are underfunded, inequality is widening, and the most vulnerable—especially women, youth, and low-income communities—are bearing the brunt of a broken system.

“Ghana is not just dealing with a fiscal crisis—it is facing a full-blown development emergency,” said John Nkaw, Country Director of ActionAid Ghana. “This Dialogue is about reclaiming our voice, reshaping our economic future, and demanding a fair share for people—not just profits. We must replace outdated, colonial-era financial systems with bold, inclusive, and locally rooted solutions.”

Reclaiming Development: A Civil Society-Led Movement

This Dialogue brings together bold voices from civil society organisations such as OXFAM, CARE, Plan, ISODEC, ABANTU, NETRight, GII, Amnesty, WACSI, CRS, Tax Justice networks, youth coalitions, and many others.

Together, these movements will amplify the voices of those most affected by unjust systems and build a shared advocacy platform to demand accountable governance and people-first fiscal policies.

The Dialogue Will Drive Four Key Demands:

  • Progressive, gender-responsive, and climate-smart tax reforms to increase domestic revenue and reduce inequality.
  • Urgent action to stop illicit financial flows and corporate tax abuse that rob Ghana of billions annually.
  • Increased investment in gender-responsive public services, including quality education, healthcare, and social protection for all.
  • Innovative and sustainable funding pathways for civil society, ensuring movements remain vibrant, independent, and impactful.

This dialogue is not a one-time conversation; it kicks off a coordinated campaign demanding economic justice, climate accountability, and gender equity globally.

Ghana Stock Exchange on high ride

0

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded a remarkable performance in April 2025, with significant gains across its benchmark indices and a surge in investor activity.

This analysis provides an in-depth examination of the key trends, insights and implications of the GSE’s performance.

Market performance

The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) posted an impressive year-to-date (YTD) return of 24.69 per cent, while the Financial Stock Index (FSI) advanced by 30.72 per cent.

These gains reflect a strong rebound in the market, driven by increased investor confidence and a favourable economic environment. The improved performance of the benchmark indices is a testament to the resilience and potential of the Ghanaian economy.

Trading Activity

The number of transactions recorded on the bourse soared by 587.19 per cent compared to April 2024, indicating heightened trading activity and improving market sentiment.

However, the total traded volume declined by 34.58 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 22.88 million shares, suggesting a shift towards more selective and strategic investment decisions.

This dichotomy between transaction numbers and traded volume highlights the evolving nature of investor behaviour in the market.

Market trends

Higher-value transactions: Despite the decline in traded volume, market value recorded a modest increase of 7.81 per cent YoY to GH¢ 144.90 billion.

This suggests a shift towards higher-value equity transactions, driven by investors’ increasing focus on quality and fundamentally strong stocks.

The growth in market value, despite a decline in volume, underscores the market’s potential for sustained growth and investor confidence.

The strong performance of financial stocks such as Societe Generale Ghana PLC and GCB Bank PLC, and consumer-focused companies such as Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC and Fan Milk PLC, indicates growing investor interest in these sectors.

This trend is likely driven by the perception of these sectors as stable and growth-oriented, offering attractive returns on investment.

Gainers and losers

Top gainers:

SIC Insurance Company PLC (42.86 per cent), Clydestone Ghana PLC (33.33 per cent) and Societe Generale Ghana PLC (10.00 per cent) were among the top gainers.

These stocks demonstrated strong price appreciation, driven by improved company performance and investor confidence. The performance of these stocks highlights the importance of fundamental analysis and company performance in driving investor interest.

Biggest losers:

Cal Bank PLC (-13.33 per cent), Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana) (-5.43 per cent) and NewGold (-1.65 per cent) were the biggest losers. These losses highlight the need for investors to remain cautious and monitor market developments closely. The losses also underscore the inherent risks associated with investing in the stock market and the importance of diversification.

Outlook

The GSE’s strong performance reflects renewed confidence in the local equities market, driven by improved economic conditions and investor sentiment.

This renewed confidence is crucial for sustaining market growth and attracting new investors.

To sustain this growth momentum, the GSE must continue to promote investor education, improve market infrastructure, and enhance regulatory frameworks.

The exchange must also work to increase market participation and trading activity, particularly among individual investors.

The GSE offers attractive investment opportunities for investors seeking to capitalise on Ghana’s economic growth potential.

The market’s growth prospects, coupled with the country’s economic stability and potential for growth, make it an attractive destination for both local and foreign investors.

The Ghana Stock Exchange’s strong performance in April 2025 demonstrates the market’s potential for growth and investor confidence.

As the market continues to evolve, investors, regulators and market participants need to work together to promote sustainable growth and development.

By fostering a conducive investment environment and improving market infrastructure, the GSE can continue to play a vital role in Ghana’s economic development.

The GSE and regulatory bodies should prioritise investor education initiatives to enhance market participation and informed decision-making.

The exchange should continue to improve its infrastructure and technology to enhance trading efficiency, transparency, and security.

Regulatory bodies should review and refine regulatory frameworks to ensure they are conducive to market growth and investor protection.

Labour Ministry to undertake survey to address skill gaps

0

Starting next month, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment (MLJE) will roll out a nationwide Qualifications and Skills Mismatches Survey (QSMS) targeting individuals in employment across both the formal and informal sectors.

The objective is to generate data that will inform evidence-based policymaking, particularly to bridge the gap between education, skills and the labour sectors.

The QSMS, as defined by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), assesses the extent to which workers’ qualifications and skills align with the requirements of their jobs.

It identifies mismatches such as underqualification, overqualification, or a disconnect between the skills held by workers and those demanded by employers.

In collaboration with the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), the national QSMS project aims at measuring the prevalence of skills and qualifications mismatches in the Ghanaian workforce.

The data collected will support the development of policies that better match education and training programmes to labour market needs, while also serving as a complementary measure of labour underutilisation in sectors within regions across the country.

As part of preparations for the upcoming survey, the ministry held a stakeholder engagement last Wednesday in Accra, bringing together representatives from the education sector, as well as public and private institutions.

Participants discussed the institutional and individual components of the QSMS and deliberated on the way forward for the successful implementation of the national project.

In attendance were the Director, Research, Statistics and Information Management, MLJE, Shadrack Mensah; acting Chief Director, Gloria Borteley Noi; Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor; representative of the Ghana Employers Association, Kingsley Narh, and Bernard Adjei from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

Comprehensive data

The Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, in a speech read on his behalf by the Acting Chief Director, Gloria Borteley Noi, at the statekeholder engagement yesterday said as the lead policymaker on employment and labour-related issues, his outfit recognised the critical need for comprehensive data to address mismatches in employment.

“The QSMS will be Ghana’s first nationally representative survey to measure these gaps across formal and informal employment sectors, inform policy, align education with labour market needs, and ultimately enhance productivity,” Dr Pelpuo said.

Economic growth

The minister stressed that countries worldwide were focusing on economic growth by improving labour productivity, while economies like Ghana, which once absorbed many low-skilled workers, especially in agriculture, technological advancements were now reducing demand for such jobs.

“This challenge is compounded by the perceived shortage of critical skills and the mismatch between qualifications/skills and the labour market needs. These gaps hinder proper placement and utilisation of employees, affecting both formal and informal sectors of our economy,” he said.

Pilot survey

The Director, Research, Statistics and Information Management, Mr Shadrack Mensah, mentioned that the ministry had already conducted a pilot survey in the Greater Accra, Northern, and Upper West regions to refine the survey instrument and monitoring frameworks, as well as build the capacity of field teams and identify logistical challenges.

He urged stakeholders, industrial leaders, policymakers, and development partners to actively support the survey’s successful execution, which would provide valuable information to inform National Human Capital Development policies and programmes.

The Focal Person for the MLJE at the GSS, Jane Geraldo-Acolatse, emphasised that the GSS’s core mandate was to produce data and statistics to support policy formulation and evidence-based decision-making.

She added that the upcoming QSMS fell squarely within this mandate and appealed to all stakeholders, especially the media, to help raise public awareness of the survey.

That, she explained, would ensure smooth cooperation between field officers and respondents during the data collection process.

This was the statement Kwami Sefa Kayi made before the NDC chose to boycott the Kokrokoo show all together.

People should go and listen to Chairman General Kwami Sefa Kayi said on 12th April, 2019, when he reprimanded Sammy Gyamfi for speaking ill about him.

It was all about Ofosu Ampo Sammy Gyamfi for the leaked tape on how to destabilize the country.

Sammy said Kwami Sefa Kayi is a “fraud and dishonest” person who only use his platform to perpetuate “malice against the ndc, and if the audio was from the NPP, he wouldn’t have played it”.

Sefa Kayi demanded an apology from Sammy Gyamfi when he later returned to his(Sefa) show Kokrokoo Peacefm on Peace 104.3 FM.

Sefa Kayi said he will “forgive” Sammy because he’s been in the game for long and knows how politicians behave.

He later told Sammy this: “You are a young man and a brilliant lawyer off course, one day, you will occupy a position in this country and you would realize how painful it is to see people throwing mud at you”.

In reaction to the above, former Presidential Staffer Justice Abeeku Newton-Offei said as a result of NDC malicious vindictiveness, and with tacit approval of Fada Dickson, Sefa-Kayi is being hanged out to dry.

Meanwhile, the ndc partisan political miscreants at TV3 Ghana are freely misbehaving, and their employer Media General Ghana is having their backs!

Minority on Sammy Gyamfi’s neck because they can no longer smuggle gold – Adorye

0

A leading member of the Movement For Change, Hopeson Adorye, has indicated that the Minority in Parliament and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are on the case of Sammy Gyamfi because of some regulations put in place by the Gold Board.

The minority in Parliament, at a press conference, condemned the acting chief executive of the Gold Board for doling out dollars to Nana Agradaa.

Greater Accra Regional Minister expresses concern about rejection of MMDCEs nominees

0

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ms Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has expressed concern regarding the ongoing rejection of nominees for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across different assemblies.

She indicated that such rejections could severely impact the development of the affected assemblies, as the lack of MDCEs would result in the stagnation of development projects, consequently delaying community advancement and obstructing the overall growth and progress of the nation.

Mrs Ocloo therefore called on assembly members and government appointees to collaborate effectively with the MMDCEs to ensure the confirmation process was smooth and successful.

Addressing journalists on Thursday at Ada in Accra, after the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for Ada East, Mr Kenneth Kabu Kanor failed to secure the two thirds majority during his confirmation, she said there was the need for better collaboration between nominees and assembly members to ensure a successful result.

Mr Kanor secured 21 votes out of the total of 35 cast.

In contrast, the environment and outcomes in the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, and Tema West Municipal Assembly were characterised by cooperation and productivity, as noted by the minister.

The Nominee for Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, Mr Freeman Tsekpo was confirmed and sworn in by the minister after securing 100 per cent yes votes from the 26 assembly members, made up of 18 elected and eight government appointees.

Similarly, the nominee for Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, Mr Samuel Tetteh Kwarshie Morton was also confirmed and sworn in after successfully obtaining 26 votes out of the total 27 votes cast by the assembly members.

Also, Mr Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the nominee for Tema West Municipal Assembly was confirmed and sworn into office by the minister after obtaining a 100 per cent vote, unanimously confirmed, with all 16 assembly members.

She urged assembly members to work closely with the MCEs to ensure the effective implementation of development initiatives in their electoral areas.

The Policy Adviser for Political Affairs at the Office of the Vice President Dr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, who was present at the confirmation of the Tema West MCE, assured the assembly and indigenes that they would not be left out of government’s development initiatives.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to equitable development across all districts, assuring the assembly that Tema West would enjoy its fair share of the “national cake.”

The sworn-in MCEs expressed their appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for their nominations, and to assembly members for the overwhelming support.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Tsekpo, said Ashaiman was a vibrant and dynamic municipality and home to industrious people who contribute immensely to the socio-economic growth of Ghana.

He highlighted pressing community issues, including poor infrastructure, sanitation problems, traffic congestion, youth unemployment, and security concerns, which his administration will prioritise and address with commitment and urgency.

The new MCE stated that they would work tirelessly to ensure the expansion and rehabilitation of roads to ease traffic congestion, improve drainage systems to mitigate flooding, and enhance access to essential services such as health, education, job creation, and youth unemployment.

Calls for Sammy Gyamfi’s suspension baseless – Titus Beyuo

0

Member of Parliament for Lambussie, Prof. Titus Beyuo, has rejected calls by the Minority in Parliament for the suspension of Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, describing the demands as baseless and politically driven.

His defense comes in the wake of public criticism and political pressure over a viral video showing Gyamfi handing what appeared to be U.S. dollars to controversial evangelist and former fetish priestess, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

The footage triggered a wave of backlash, with the Minority demanding Gyamfi’s suspension over what they deemed an inappropriate act.

However, speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Prof. Beyuo acknowledged the optics were poor but insisted there was no legal or procedural breach.

“He has recognised that with what he did, even though it was not a crime, it doesn’t inure to be good for the government, to the person who appointed me, and to the people I am serving, which is why he called that indiscretion.”

He further argued that there are no clear grounds for disciplinary action under existing laws.

“But I am saying that the offenses listed under which specific punishment will apply, we don’t see that here.”

Prof. Beyuo maintained that the matter is being handled appropriately by the presidency and urged critics to allow the process to run its course.

“I see the call by the Minority, honestly, to be baseless. The presidency is determined to deal with it, let us leave it as such,” he concluded.

Grounding the ”Kotoka Clause”—Why Swearing in an Acting President for Travel Is a Constitutional Folly

0

In the theatre of Ghanaian constitutional interpretation, few myths have lingered as stubbornly—and as absurdly—as the idea that every time the President and Vice-President travel outside the country, the Speaker must be sworn in as Acting President.

This practice, supposedly grounded in the law, is in fact rooted in a misreading—more precisely, a misapplication—of our constitutional text by the Supreme Court in Asare v. Attorney-General [2003–2004] SCGLR 823.

I’ll return Sammy Gyamfi’s $800 gift – Agradaa

0

Evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, says she will return the money she received from the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, following public criticism and growing calls for his suspension.

In a widely circulated video, Gyamfi is seen handing what appears to be U.S. dollars to the controversial evangelist—footage that has sparked backlash, particularly from members of the Minority in Parliament.

They have described the gesture as inappropriate and are calling for his immediate suspension.

Responding to the controversy in a live video on Instagram, Nana Agradaa said she plans to return the money—and even double the amount.

“I will return the $800 and even double it. I will do my best to find his office, and I will go there with my camera and show it to Ghanaians that I have returned the money,” she stated.

The former fetish priestess, now turned evangelist, expressed concern that her involvement might damage Gyamfi’s career, saying her conscience would not permit that.

“This is my mantle, my Bible, and my anointing oil, as a great woman of God, and I say that I will set my church on fire if I am the reason Sammy will lose his job. Because the Bible said we should do good to everybody, the Bible did not discriminate when it said that. So, if Sammy Gyamfi gives me money, he deserves to do that,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on May 12, 2025, accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of engaging in opportunistic politics by calling for Gyamfi’s suspension.

Speaking on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu dismissed the NPP’s reaction as politically motivated, questioning their credibility on issues of public accountability.

“The moment the NPP jumps into this, you know that they’re just dabbling in opportunistic politics. They don’t believe in any of the principles they’re espousing. If you look at their conduct and behaviour in government, this is not a party that has any respect for modesty or even decency in public office,” he said.

I’ll share my church money with Sammy Gyamfi if he’s fired because of me

0

Founder and leader of Heaven Way Church, Evangelist Mama Pat, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has vowed to sell her church building and give half of the proceeds to Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi to start a business, should he be removed from office for gifting her $800.

There has been a wave of criticism in the last 48 hours after a video went viral showing Mr. Gyamfi giving dollar notes to Asiedua Asiamah at a public gathering.

Some segments of the public have criticized the gesture, questioning its appropriateness in light of the current economic difficulties.

Mr. Gyamfi responded with an apology, clarifying that the donation was a private gesture and not intended for public display. Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, has since summoned him to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Others have called for his removal from office to serve as a deterrent to other political appointees.

However, in a video posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned pastor, said she does not see any wrongdoing or crime committed by the young politician that should warrant his dismissal.

She has pledged to support Sammy Gyamfi financially should he lose his job because of her.

“Some senior NDC party members are jealous of Sammy Gyamfi’s position and want to use this act of kindness – the $800 gift he gave me as a reason to get him sacked. I swear on my mantle, anointing oil, and Bible that I will sell my church building, divide the proceeds into two, and give Sammy Gyamfi half the amount to start a business.”

Appiah Kubi Drops Shòcking Truth About Captain Smart’s Exit

Appiah Kubi Drops Shòcking Truth About Captain Smart’s Exit

News Hub Creator17h

Former Angel FM news anchor Appiah Kubi has pulled back the curtain on the circumstances that led to popular broadcaster Captain Smart’s exit from the station. Speaking with De God Son TV, Kubi explained that while Captain Smart’s fearless commentary won him legions of fans, it also drew unwelcome attention from powerful figures whose influence Angel FM could ill afford to alienate.

“His bold critiques of high-profile individuals began to trouble management,” Kubi said. “Pressure came in—from calls, emails, even veiled warnings—that if Angel FM continued to offend certain people, the station’s licenses and advertising contracts could be at risk.” According to Kubi, the station owner personally cautioned Smart that running a media outlet in Ghana required balancing journalistic integrity with commercial realities. “The boss made it clear: upset the wrong people now, and you’ll pay for it later,” he recounted.

Captain Smart’s departure, though it sparked public speculation, now emerges as the outcome of a tense standoff between editorial daring and business sustainability. As Ghana’s media landscape grows ever more competitive and politically sensitive, Kubi’s revelations underscore the tightrope that news organizations must walk to deliver hard-hitting journalism without jeopardizing their own future.

Mahama Calls for Forgiveness Amid Controversy Over NPP Vice Presidential Candidate’s Remarks

0

In a striking turn of events within Ghana’s political landscape, former President John Mahama has stepped forward to advocate for forgiveness following controversial remarks made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known informally as “Napo.” Dr. Prempeh, who is the Vice Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stirred significant public uproar with his assertion that it is “haram,” or forbidden, for Muslim voters to support the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The controversy erupted during a political rally aimed at galvanizing NPP supporters, where Dr. Prempeh urged Muslim constituents to reflect on their religious beliefs when casting their votes. He boldly proclaimed, “Muslims should not vote for the NDC because it is against Islamic teachings,” a statement that has sparked widespread backlash from various quarters.

Adding fuel to the fire, Dr. Prempeh made inflammatory comments regarding the Ashanti Region. He suggested that supporting Mahama would bring curses upon individuals, referencing certain decisions made by Mahama during his tenure as president. He remarked, “Anyone supporting John Mahama in the Ashanti Region is inviting curses on themselves for his dismissal of regional officials,” further polarizing the political discourse.

In response to these divisive statements, John Mahama has called for a spirit of unity and understanding among Ghanaians. He emphasized the importance of respectful dialogue over inflammatory rhetoric, urging all political actors to foster a climate of mutual respect.

Mahama’s appeal for forgiveness was encapsulated in a prayer, where he implored Allah to grant Dr. Prempeh mercy for his recent comments. “In the interest of unity and progress, I pray Allah forgives Napo for his recent comments,” Mahama stated, highlighting the need for reconciliation in the face of political tensions.

The fallout from Dr. Prempeh’s remarks has reignited discussions about the role of religion in politics, particularly in a country as diverse as Ghana. Critics argue that such statements not only threaten social cohesion but also undermine democratic principles by attempting to manipulate religious beliefs for political gain.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the call for forgiveness from Mahama serves as a reminder of the pressing need for dialogue and understanding in a time of heightened political sensitivity. How both the NPP and NDC navigate this controversy will likely have lasting implications for Ghana’s electoral environment as the nation approaches its upcoming elections.

NPP’s Owusu-Bempah defends Sammy Gyamfi, says he’s done no wrong

0

A Deputy Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Owusu Bempah, in a rare show of support, has jumped to the defence of the embattled Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi.

Gyamfi, at a public event on Saturday, May 10, 2025, was seen doling out several notes of U.S. dollars to the controversial former priestess-turned-pastor, Evangelist Mama Patricia, popularly known as Agradaa.

A section of the public has criticized the gesture, questioning its appropriateness in light of the current economic difficulties.

Some have gone further, calling for his removal from office to serve as a deterrent to other political appointees.

Mr. Gyamfi has since issued an apology, clarifying that the donation was a private gesture and not intended for public display. Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, has reportedly summoned him to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

However, in a video posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Ernest Owusu Bempah defended Gyamfi, stating that he sees no wrongdoing or crime for which the young politician should be dismissed.

“This noise being made about Sammy Gyamfi gifting dollars to Agradaa is dead on arrival. Nobody has the moral right to attack that young man. Nobody can attack Sammy Gyamfi on this particular matter. Has he stolen money? Whoever has evidence that Sammy Gyamfi has stolen money should bring it out and let the Office of the Special Prosecutor deal with him. Are we saying that because Sammy Gyamfi hasn’t had an extensive working life, he cannot boast of just $10,000? Let us speak the truth. Nobody should go around attacking the young man, and I will say this anywhere.

“We should be careful about the way we do our politics. If there had been a scandal at GOLDBOD, that would be a different matter. As for me, I don’t support such jealousy. He is a young man who has followed Mahama for a long time, and now people want to vilify him and get him removed. No — when young people are doing well, we should support them. He has apologised and admitted that what he did was a case of youthful exuberance. But the calls for his dismissal are misplaced.”

Sammy Gyamfi must resign for public misconduct – ACUC

0

The AfriKan Continental Union Consult (ACUC), a think-tank in African good governance, has called for the resignation of Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), over a viral dollar donation video.

The viral video, which has drawn massive disapproval from the public, shows Mr. Gyamfi counting and giving some undisclosed amount of foreign currency to Madam Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, a self-proclaimed evangelist.

Dr. Benjamin Anyagre Aziginaateeg, the Chief Executive Officer of the ACUC, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in a reaction that Mr. Gyamfi, who is also the Communication Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), must resign or be dismissed from office by the president if the public misconduct is proven to be true.

Dr. Aziginaateeg said the video was an affront and disregard to Ghana’s image and a dent on the office of the president, especially when President John Dramani Mahama just launched a code of conduct for government office holders.

“This is a test case; let’s face it squarely, as a huge measurement for good governance, indeed, what a test case for the President,” he stressed, adding that “He should resign because he has lost it. The resetting must begin with good attitudinal behaviours of people in power.”

He further questioned what moral right the government would have to talk about corruption and other related issues, especially when the giveaway was not in local currency and it involved the CEO of a mineral-related board.

According to the ACUC CEO, the resident risks becoming unpopular within days if he does not walk the code of conduct, suggesting that within six months, the president should do a review of the performance of the government appointee.

“He cannot disappoint the Ghanaian with his richly accumulated experiences. He will be hated more than for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo if he remains soft,” he said.

He further added that governments must have clear ideologies and adequate preparation of their officers before assumption of duty, as without that, the government might fail right from the beginning.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gyamfi has since apologised to Ghanaians and the president for the content of the viral video, clarifying that, “this was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and lifelong custom of lending a helping hand to people in need. I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space.”

He added in a post on X.

Mr. Gyamfi wrote, “That is unfortunate and regrettable. I must say that I understand the uproar that this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by the same. To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.”

The Art of Dressing Appropriately

0

Dressing appropriately is an essential aspect of our daily lives, whether we’re heading to work, attending a social event, or simply running errands. The way we dress not only reflects our personality but also communicates our respect for the occasion, the people we’re interacting with, and ourselves. When we take the time to dress thoughtfully, we demonstrate that we value the event, the people involved, and our own self-respect.

Understanding the Importance of Dressing Appropriately

Dressing appropriately is not just about following rules or conforming to societal norms; it’s about presenting ourselves in a way that feels authentic and respectful. When we dress well, we feel more confident and prepared to take on the day. Our attire can convey our personality, values, and attitude, making a lasting impression on others. Whether we’re meeting new people or interacting with colleagues, our clothing choices can speak volumes about who we are and what we stand for.

The Role of Occasion in Dressing Appropriately

The occasion plays a significant role in determining what we should wear. A job interview, for instance, requires a level of formality that might not be necessary for a casual gathering with friends. When we’re unsure about the dress code, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and dress more formally. This shows that we’re taking the occasion seriously and that we respect the people involved. On the other hand, dressing too casually for a formal event can give the impression that we’re not taking things seriously.

Dressing for Our Body Type

Dressing appropriately also involves understanding our body type and dressing in a way that flatters our figure. When we wear clothes that fit well and accentuate our positive features, we feel more confident and comfortable in our own skin. For example, if we have an hourglass figure, a belted dress or top can help define our waist and create a more feminine silhouette. By dressing in a way that complements our body type, we can create a more polished and put-together look.

The Power of Colors and Fabrics

The colors and fabrics we choose can also play a significant role in how we present ourselves. Different colors can evoke different emotions and attitudes, and choosing the right colors can help us convey the message we want to send. For instance, blue is often associated with trust and professionalism, making it a popular choice for job interviews and formal events. Similarly, the fabric of our clothing can make a big difference in how we look and feel. Breathable, comfortable fabrics can help us feel more relaxed and at ease, while stiff or uncomfortable fabrics can make us feel restricted and self-conscious.

Putting it All Together

Dressing appropriately is not just about following a set of rules; it’s about understanding the occasion, our body type, and the message we want to convey. When we take the time to dress thoughtfully, we demonstrate respect for ourselves and others, and we create a lasting impression that can open doors and build relationships. By dressing in a way that feels authentic and respectful, we can feel more confident and prepared to take on the day, and we can make a positive impact on those around us.

Conclusion

In conclusion, dressing appropriately is an art that requires thought, consideration, and attention to detail. By understanding the occasion, our body type, and the message we want to convey, we can create a lasting impression that reflects our personality and values. Whether we’re dressing for a job interview, a social event, or simply everyday activities, our attire can speak volumes about who we are and what we stand for. By taking the time to dress thoughtfully, we can feel more confident, build stronger relationships, and make a positive impact on the world around us.

Titled “Danye Sidzi Ma,” the emotionally rich track is a heartfelt tribute to mothers, with a particular focus on the artist’s own mother, Miss Kassah Josephine, a former teacher at Mac-Tetteh International School in Dzodze.

The song highlights the immeasurable sacrifices and unwavering support of mothers in shaping the futures of their children.

Composed in 1999 ahead of Rois’s enrollment at Accra Polytechnic in 2000, the song draws deeply from personal experience.

Miss Josephine played a pivotal role in her son’s academic journey, providing encouragement and support throughout his secondary and tertiary education. Her devotion became the inspiration behind this enduring anthem.

After a series of demo recordings, “Danye Sidzi Ma” was professionally produced in 2003 by legendary Ghanaian producer Jay Q at Hush Hush Studios.

Despite the absence of digital platforms at the time, the song gained widespread popularity through radio play, quickly becoming a household favorite. Its soulful melody and poignant lyrics made it an instant classic.

The song’s appeal lies in more than just its sound—it is its emotional depth that continues to resonate with listeners.

With vivid storytelling and a sincere delivery, Togbe Afrika captures the essence of maternal love, resilience, care, and selflessness. The composition remains a rallying call for artists to create music that goes beyond entertainment to touch the soul.

While Paskal Rois has since transitioned into high-level professional roles—including his appointment as Honourary Consul of Indonesia to Ghana in 2021—the legacy of “Danye Sidzi Ma” remains intact.

In addition to his diplomatic work, Rois is a successful entrepreneur with interests spanning oil and gas, aviation, tourism, construction, media, minerals, and pharmaceuticals.

As Mother’s Day brings renewed attention to the contributions of mothers, “Danye Sidzi Ma” serves as a poignant reminder of their vital role in society.

It is both a celebration and a challengeto honour, appreciate, and uplift mothers not only through words, but through music that endures.

Kennedy Agyapong vs Anas in defamation case

0

Anas Aremeyaw and Kennedy Agyapong Anas Aremeyaw and Kennedy Agyapong

A Superior Court in Essex County, New Jersey, on May 12, 2025, reduced a defamation award against former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, from $18 million to $500, following a legal request by his lawyers.

The court’s decision came after the trial judge acknowledged that while Kennedy Agyapong had indeed defamed investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, the original amount awarded by the jury was deemed excessive.

Although the financial penalty was significantly reduced, the court upheld the jury’s finding of malicious defamation.

“THIS MATTER having been brought before the Court upon application by Connell Foley LLP and Breslin & Breslin, P.A., attorneys for Defendant, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong (“Defendant”), for an Order molding the jury award; and the Court having considered the matter, the submissions of counsel, and the arguments of counsel, if any, and for good cause showing; IT IS on this 12 day of MAY 2025; ORDERED that Defendant’s Motion is hereby GRANTED; and MOLDED TO $500.

“ORDERED that the total jury award of $18,000,000.00 is hereby reduced to $500,” part of the court papers said.

Meanwhile, in a statement released on Sunday, May 11, 2025, Anas, through his investigative outfit Tiger Eye PI, welcomed the revised judgment, emphasising that it reaffirmed the central issue of the case: that Agyapong maliciously defamed him.

“Following the award, Kennedy Agyapong filed a motion for remittitur… Thus, inherent in his motion, Kennedy Agyapong admitted to having maliciously defamed me,” it stated.

Anas added that the case was not about money but about setting the records straight.

“This fight has not been about the money, but rather, a fight for truth and justice,” he added.

The case originated in 2019 after Anas sued Ken Agyapong in the US over defamatory remarks the MP made following the release of the Number 12 documentary.

The investigative piece produced by Tiger Eye PI exposed rooted corruption within Ghana’s football sector, leading to the resignation of the then Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Kennedy Agyapong launched a sustained public campaign to discredit Anas, accusing him of fraud and unethical journalism. The accusations formed the basis of the defamation lawsuit.

In April 2025, a US jury ruled in favour of Anas and awarded $18 million in damages.

However, Kennedy Agyapong’s legal team later filed a motion for remittitur, contending that the amount was excessive.

The trial judge agreed, leading to the reduction.

Ghana midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana Ghana midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana

Ghana midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana scored his first-ever goal for Atalanta on Monday night, helping the team to secure a vital 2-1 win against AS Roma in the Italian Serie A.

The win has guaranteed the club qualification to participate in the UEFA Champions League in the 2025/26 football season.

In the match against AS Rona, Sulemana missed out on a starting role for the contest but came on in the 68th minute to replace midfielder Mario Pasalic.

Less than 10 minutes after coming on, Ibrahim Sulemana showcased his ability to score with a long-range strike.

He pounced on a loose ball just outside the AS Roma area and fired a first-time shot that went into the back of the net.

Watch the stunning equaliser below.

Before his equaliser, Nigerian sensation Ademola Lookman had scored to give Atalanta the lead in the 9th minute of the first half.

However, a Bryan Cristante strike in the 32nd minute restored parity for AS Roma before the break.

Ibrahim Sulemana, 21, has struggled with injuries this season. He will hope for more playing time in Atalanta’s last two games in the Italian Serie A against Genoa and Parma.

Karma Won’t Forgive You—Captain Smart Claps Back at McBrown During an Explosive Interview

Captain Smart has fired back at Nana Ama McBrown in spectacular fashion, challenging her doubts about his wealth and dismissing her claim that he will soon become broke. In an interview filled with confidence and defiance, Captain Smart made it clear that he does not rely on journalism for his livelihood, insisting that he has built an empire far beyond the media industry.

McBrown had earlier claimed that Captain Smart has no stable work and would soon face financial difficulties. But Captain Smart was having none of it. In his sharp response, he warned that karma would not forgive McBrown for celebrating his exit from the media industry, implying that her comments were not just criticism but an attempt to tarnish his name.

He didn’t stop there. Captain Smart boldly declared that he is wealthier than McBrown and dared her to prove otherwise. “If she wants to challenge, she should show up,” he said, throwing down the gauntlet. His words sent shockwaves across social media, fueling heated discussions on whether his claims hold weight or are just an attempt to silence his critics.

The ongoing clash between these two media personalities has set tongues wagging across Ghana. While some admire Captain Smart’s confidence and refusal to bow to public scrutiny, others believe McBrown’s comments exposed a deeper truth—that his financial future may not be as secure as he claims. Social media has erupted with debates, with fans taking sides and analyzing every statement.

At the heart of the controversy is a bigger question: is Captain Smart truly as wealthy as he says, or is he strategically shaping public perception to maintain his influence? Some argue that successful businesspeople let their wealth speak for itself rather than making bold declarations. Others say McBrown’s remarks were unnecessary and could be seen as an attack rather than constructive criticism.

No matter where the truth lies, one thing is certain—Captain Smart knows how to keep the nation talking, and this drama is far from over. Will McBrown respond, or will this battle of words escalate into something bigger? Ghana waits to see what happens next.

Leave Sammy Gyamfi Alone; We Know NPP Big Men Who Spray $50k On Women – NPP’s Owusu Bempah Charges

0

The Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Kofi Owusu Bempah, has passionately come to the defence of Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), following a storm of criticism over his recent $10,000 cash donation to popular televangelist, Evangelist Agradaa.

The donation, which was made publicly during one of Agradaa’s events, sparked heated debates on social media, with critics questioning how a public servant like Gyamfi could afford such generosity. But Owusu Bempah believes the backlash is politically motivated and deeply hypocritical.

In an interview on NET2 TV, sighted by Ghbase News, Owusu Bempah did not hold back: “Leave Sammy Gyamfi alone. We know NPP big men who spray $50,000 on women. He who comes with equity must come with clean hands,” he charged, suggesting that members of his own party had done far worse without facing scrutiny.

According to him, unless there is evidence that the money donated by Gyamfi was stolen or sourced from government funds, there should be no cause for alarm. “How much is $10,000 that Sammy Gyamfi can’t afford?” he asked rhetorically. “The noise about Sammy Gyamfi’s gift is dead on arrival.”

For Owusu Bempah, the matter should only be of national concern if it is linked to embezzlement or corruption. He called on critics to submit any proof of wrongdoing to the Special Prosecutor instead of fanning political division. “Unless funds are proven to have gone missing from the Gold Board’s coffers, there’s absolutely nothing wrong,” he added.

The controversy has drawn mixed reactions, with some Ghanaians expressing genuine concern about the appearance of wealth by public figures, while others view the scrutiny as an unfair political witch-hunt.

As the nation continues to grapple with economic challenges, public sensitivity to how political figures handle money is at an all-time high. But Owusu Bempah’s intervention may have shifted the narrative — not necessarily by exonerating Gyamfi, but by reminding Ghanaians that corruption isn’t a partisan issue, and double standards have no place in public discourse.

Power subsidies crucial to tame rising mobile tariffs – Telecel Group CEO

0

Telecommunication players are demanding targeted government interventions to ease power-related costs in the sector in a bid  to unlock the needed growth in the digital economy.

Group CEO of Telecel, Moh Damush, admits that power costs remain the most significant operational challenge impacting telecom pricing both in Ghana and across the continent.

“The biggest challenge that the continent has currently is the power resources – which has a huge impact on the prices, whether for the customers or for the cost of the operation itself. This is where the biggest challenge applies.”

“To allow sustainable connectivity, we invest in three different layers while in Europe, for example, you don’t need to do all these three layers. One layer is enough. So this challenge is putting the private sector under pressure to put up more capital expenditure at the same time facing a lot of challenges because of power outages”, he said.

In an interview with Citi Business News’ Nii Larte Lartey on the sidelines of the 2025 Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan, Moh Damush, noted that energy expenses are a major factor behind data pricing, particularly in markets with unreliable power supply –  a development making it difficult to expand affordable connectivity to underserved areas.

“There are different ways to address them. One is through government support, which we’re currently seeing, where government focuses on attracting investments. These investments yield direct benefits across various sectors, including telecom. Another approach, particularly for power-intensive industries like telecommunications, is to subsidise power costs. This would improve service quality for users while still ensuring revenue generation for the government.”

Thousands of business leaders have gathered at the 2025 Africa CEO Forum to discuss strategies for accelerating investment reforms, deepening the implementation of AfCFTA and aligning policy to unlock the private sector potential of the continent.

Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation, Makta Diop at the opening on Monday May 12, 2025 pushed for greater private capital mobilisation private capital to tackle job creation and infrastructure gaps.

The two-day Forum will end on Tuesday, May 13, 2025  with a landmark policy debate between candidates vying to lead the African Development Bank (AfDB) to shape the economic direction of the continent.

Minority condemns absence of President, Veep, and Speaker

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has severely denounced what it describes as a flagrant violation of the 1992 Constitution after the President, Vice President, and Speaker of Parliament all left the nation at the same time without an Acting President being sworn in.

The Minority said that all three of the senior officials were simultaneously abroad, which they claim violates Article 60 of the Constitution, in a news release released on Monday, May 12, 2025.

The Speaker of Parliament must be sworn in to serve as President in the event that neither the President nor the Vice President are accessible, according to the Constitution.

At the time of the statement, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman was in the UK for medical treatment, and President John Dramani Mahama was in Togo for the African Union Debt Conference.

The Minority further pointed out that Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, who ought to have taken over, was also abroad.

The Chief Justice is supposed to take on presidential responsibilities in the event that none of the three are present, under the Constitution. Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, however, is presently suspended.

The Minority accused the government of treating the Constitution as “an inconvenience rather than a binding framework,” describing the situation as a “deliberate and calculated” act.

The statement signed by the Minority’s legal counsel, John Darko, warned that such constitutional infractions pose a serious threat to Ghana’s democratic foundation and governance.

“We will hold the President and his Vice accountable to their oath of office, which demands fidelity to the Constitution. Where necessary, we shall invoke the relevant provisions of law to ensure that constitutional breaches do not go unpunished,” the statement ended.

Veteran Statesman Nyaho-Tamakloe Releases Memoir on Ghana’s Political History

A Nation into Retirement: The Narrative of a StatesmanA Nation into Retirement: The Narrative of a Statesman
A Nation into Retirement: The Narrative of a Statesman

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, the renowned football administrator and political figure, has launched his second book, A Nation into Retirement: The Narrative of a Statesman, offering a firsthand account of Ghana’s political evolution over six decades.

The 700-page memoir provides an unvarnished perspective on the country’s governance challenges, military regimes, and democratic transitions through the eyes of an active participant.

In an interview following the launch, the 80-year-old author emphasized the book’s didactic purpose: “There have been many distortions in our historical records. This work sets the record straight, particularly about the military era, so the youth can understand our past to better confront today’s challenges.” The memoir blends personal narrative with national history, detailing Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s experiences as a diplomat, sports administrator, and political insider during pivotal moments in Ghana’s development.

The book arrives at a time of renewed national discourse about governance and leadership values. Its release has sparked interest among historians and political analysts, who anticipate it will fill gaps in the documented history of Ghana’s post-independence political landscape. Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s dual perspective as both observer and actor in key events from the Rawlings era to Ghana’s democratic consolidation offers unique insights into the nation’s institutional evolution.

While memoirs by Ghanaian statesmen remain relatively rare in the publishing landscape, this work follows a growing trend of senior public figures documenting their experiences. Early readers suggest the book’s most valuable contribution may be its documentation of behind-the-scenes political negotiations and institutional conflicts that shaped modern Ghana but never entered official records. As the nation grapples with contemporary governance challenges, this retrospective from one of its most enduring public servants provides both historical context and cautionary lessons about leadership, nation-building, and democratic resilience.

Minority in Parliament condemns the absence of the President, Vice President, and Speaker without swearing in an Acting President, calling it a violation of Article 60.

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has issued a sharp rebuke over what it calls a serious constitutional violation following the simultaneous absence of President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin from the country—without swearing in an Acting President as required under Article 60 of the 1992 Constitution.

Ghana’s development is a shared responsibility – NCCE

MS Janet Yaa Obido, an Assistant Civic Education Officer with the Kadjebi District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has called on the citizenry to participate fully in Ghana’s development.

She emphasised that development is a shared responsibility.

She stated that every action, whether small or large, contributes to national development and that if we all rise to the challenges with commitment and action, we can build a nation, grounded in peace that offers hope, opportunity and a better life for every Ghanaian.

Ms Obido made these remarks while addressing some seamstress and hairdressing apprentices in Kadjebi in the Oti Region.

The engagement formed part of the commission’s activities in marking the 2025 Constitution Week celebration, a flagship programme of the commission.

She said that Ghana’s progress will not come solely through big policies or foreign investments, rather, through citizens seeing themselves as nation-builders and that this can be achieved when citizens obey laws, protect public property, safeguard the environment, uphold justice, and foster peaceful co-existence.

Ms Obido stated that these values, when embraced by individuals and communities, formed the moral and social foundation needed to secure Ghana’s long-term success.

She charged the apprentices to care for the environment by avoiding littering, supporting reforestation and conserving water and energy.

Madam Alberta Humado, Proprietress Ahafia Beauty Parlor, Kadjebi, commended the NCCE Officer for the insightful education and pledged to convey the message to other mistresses.

The Constitution Week Celebration is one of the flagship programmes of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE). The week was instituted in 2001 to commemorate the country’s return to constitutional democratic rule.

Significantly, April 28, 1992, was the day the Ghanaian electorate voted favourably in a referendum that adopted the draft Fourth Republican Constitution which subsequently came into full force on 7th January 1993.

This year’s activity is marked under the theme: “Ghana’s Future: Our Collective Responsibility”. -GNA
