Ghana’s credit rating upgraded to ‘CCC+’ amid gold reforms and debt restructuring

Ghana’s creditworthiness has been boosted following a decision by SP Global Ratings to upgrade the country’s foreign currency rating from ‘SD’ (Selective Default to ‘CCC+’.

This follows sustained progress in debt restructuring and macroeconomic management, with key indicators such as gold export earnings and foreign exchange reserves showing notable improvement.

The upgrade, detailed in S&P’s May 9, 2025, assessment, comes on the back of the successful completion of Ghana’s domestic debt exchange program and ongoing negotiations with external creditors.

S&P also affirmed the ‘CCC+’ ratings on Ghana’s debt and maintained a stable outlook on both foreign and local currency ratings.

The development reflects growing investor confidence, strengthened by government initiatives like the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board.

The Board, aimed at streamlining the gold value chain, is already playing a critical role in formalising the sector and boosting export revenues.

The improved external liquidity position, supported by a surge in gold exports and a recovering cedi, is helping Ghana meet its short-term obligations more comfortably.

The cedi, which had crossed GH¢17 to the dollar in 2023, is now trading around GH¢14, helping curb import-driven inflation, now at 21.2%—the lowest in eight months.

This progress also follows Ghana’s October 2024 Eurobond exchange and the memorandum of understanding ratified with bilateral creditors in January 2025, seen as a cornerstone of its broader economic recovery. The gains have been linked by some to the policy groundwork laid during the tenure of former President John Dramani Mahama.

Despite the positive outlook, S&P cautions that downside risks remain. Should Ghana’s fiscal performance weaken, or financing conditions tighten, the country’s ability to service its debt could be jeopardised, placing renewed pressure on its fiscal and external stability.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the Finance minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has, however, downplayed fears of reversal, insisting that the recovery is rooted in “prudent and well-coordinated economic policies.”

He emphasised that the current gains are not fleeting but a testament to deliberate efforts to restore confidence and build a resilient macroeconomic foundation.

The government continues to implement fiscal reforms to tackle structural challenges, signaling its commitment to long-term economic stability and sustainable growth.

The World Bank has commended Ghana for the remarkable progress achieved under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) Project, describing its performance as exceeding expectations and delivering beyond initial targets.

This remark was made by the World Bank’s Global Director for Social Development, Robin Mearns, who led a high-level World Bank delegation to tour SOCO project sites and engaged with stakeholders to assess midterm progress, strengthen collaboration, and explore opportunities for potential scaling up the initiative.

“The SOCO Project is not only meeting but exceeding its targets. It is bringing tremendous economic prosperity to regions that have not seen much investment in the past. The scale and inclusiveness of the project are impressive, and I strongly encourage additional funding to extend its reach to the remaining vulnerable districts”, Mr. Mearns said.

During the field visit, the delegation inspected community-level interventions in Jinlo along the Salaga corridor, including a CHPS compound and guinea fowl rearing project. Mr. Mearns recounted the story of Fatima, a local farmer whose guinea fowl stock grew from 30 to over 100 birds with SOCO support. “Fatima’s story is just one example of how SOCO is boosting local livelihoods and building resilience,” he said.

The team also engaged with other income-generating groups such as the Shishegu Soap Makers and toured a newly built livestock market. These initiatives fall under SOCO’s Local Economic Development (LED) component, which is central to the project’s mission of sustainable community empowerment.

The Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Ali Adolf John, described the project as a game changer in addressing both infrastructure gaps and social vulnerability in the six Northern regions. He noted that SOCO’s integrated approach is helping to shape peaceful and thriving communities across the regions.

SOCO Project Coordinator, Ms. Elizabeth Ohenewah Agyei, revealed that the first cycle of the project had delivered 530 community infrastructure subprojects, with 489 completed and handed over as of February 2025. These include 33 roads and culverts, 59 educational facilities, 66 health centres, 210 water facilities, and 73 rural markets. She also noted that over 6,200 jobs—many for women, youth, and persons with disabilities—had been created, and 744 livelihood groups with more than 24,000 members had received support to boost local productivity.

Ms. Agyei added that a second cycle is underway, targeting the delivery of 680 additional subprojects across the 48 districts. “The SOCO Project is not just about bricks and blocks. It’s about building community ownership and participation,” she said. “We aim to strengthen the social fabric through inclusive leadership and shared responsibility, which are the true essence of social cohesion.”

The delegation also participated in the inauguration of the Tamale Metropolitan Youth Parliament, a civic engagement initiative under SOCO that promotes youth involvement in governance and peacebuilding. Mr. Nicolas Perrin, World Bank’s Practice Manager for Social Sustainability and Inclusion in West Africa, described the platform as a model worth replicating. “This Youth Parliament exemplifies civic inclusion and leadership development,” he said.

The SOCO Project is funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. It operates 48 selected districts across Ghana’s six northern regions with a focus on building inclusive, peaceful, and economically empowered communities along the northern border zones.

Nigeria seeks support for Atlantic Gas Pipeline Project

If the President’s Code of Conduct means anything, Sammy Gyamfi’s time as Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) must end — and it must end immediately.

A now-viral video shows Gyamfi, a high-ranking political figure and presidential appointee, handing out US dollars from his vehicle to former fetish priestess Nana Agradaa in a moment he later described as “private generosity.” 

This display, no matter the intent, is a violation not just of optics but of the very ethical principles laid out in the President’s own Code of Conduct for political appointees.

And let’s be clear: this is not about kindness. It’s about standards — the kind the Mahama administration promised to uphold. Section 1.1 of the Code of Conduct mandates that all ministers and appointees, including CEOs of parastatals, “perform their duties and manage their personal affairs in a manner that can stand the closest public scrutiny” and “ensure that any conflict between personal interest and public interest is resolved in favour of the public interest”.

Why this matters

A person in Sammy Gyamfi’s position cannot afford this kind of reckless informality. According to Section 1.2(c), appointees must manage their personal affairs in a way that withstands “the closest public scrutiny” and must comport themselves “in a manner befitting the trust and confidence placed in [them]”. 

In a context where public confidence in institutions is already low, this dollar-handing stunt — however “well-meaning” — severely undermines the integrity of a fragile public office.

What makes the situation even more untenable is that this occurred while Gyamfi holds stewardship over GoldBod — a program controversially positioned at the heart of the government’s economic revival plans. His actions give the impression of discretionary financial power, misuse of influence, and public performativity — the very things the Code warns against in Sections 1.5.5 (Influence Peddling), 1.5.6 (Transparency and Accountability), and 1.5.9 (Use of Budgetary Allocation).

What the President must do

Section 6 of the Code is unequivocal: the President shall determine a course of action for any appointee who breaches the Code. The list of actions includes requiring a public apology, issuing a reprimand, requesting resignation, suspension, or outright termination.

Given the public nature of this breach and the potential to damage both the credibility of the GoldBod initiative and the new administration’s reformist image, the only appropriate option is immediate removal.

Failure to act will be read — and rightly so — as tacit approval of a system where appointees can blur the lines between public office and personal influence with impunity.

This is about more than one man

Yes, this is about Sammy Gyamfi. But it’s also about President Mahama. If he is serious about his own words — “I pledge to deal swiftly and decisively with any political appointee who breaches any of the standards set out in this Code” — then the response must match the rhetoric.

This administration has made integrity its rallying cry. It now has a chance to prove that cry is not hollow. Gyamfi’s act, however private he thought it was, became a public moment of failure. The job of good governance is to ensure private lapses don’t become national embarrassments.

Come Monday, the Ghana Gold Board needs new leadership. No equivocation. No delays. No excuses.

Ghana’s Black Satellites coach, Desmond Ofei, has branded the quarter-final clash against host nation Egypt as a “final” in their attempt to secure a World Cup slot.

Ghana remains undefeated after three matches in the competition, which include two victories and a draw.

However, coach Desmond is not getting carried away.

Accra, May 11, GNA – Apostle Dr Walter Saakwa-Mante, the Founder and General Overseer of Faith Army Chapel International (FACI), has bid farewell to his late father, Mr Harley Nii Mante Saakwa-Mante. 

The funeral service of the late Mr Harley Nii Mante Saakwa-Mante took place at the Rev Ernest Bruce Memorial Methodist Church, Adabraka, Accra. 

The late Mr Harley Nii Mante Saakwa-Mante died on 19th April 2025, at the age of 87. 

He was survived by his wife Teacher Rose and their two sons and a daughter – Apostle Dr Walter Saakwa-Mante, Nii Amu and Naa Mansua; as well as eight grandchildren. 

The late Mr Harley Nii Mante Saakwa-Mante’s father was Numoo Saakwa Mante of the Otublohun Royal Family, a renowned general merchant and co-proprietor of Lamant Ghana Limited. 

His mother was Madam Kate Armah-Kwantreng of Tabon clan (Accra) a midwuyand a trader. 

Both parents are blessed memories. 

The late Mr Harley Nii Mante Saakwa-Mante was born into a stanch Methodist Family and he largely, fellowshipped at the Rev Ernest Bruce Memorial Methodist Church, Adabraka, Accra. 

Apostle Dr Saakwa-Mante in a tribute to his late father said life was a fleeting shadow, a whisper in the wind, and yet, some souls leave echoes that never fade; saying “Death is not our enemy – it is the gentle door to eternity”. 

“My father, Mr Harley Nii Mante Saakwa-Mante, was not only a father to me, but a father to many – and a grandfather to even more. More than a parent, he was a friend. Through him, I encountered giants, among them the late Dr Kojo Owusu – dear friend of his and man who also became dear to me.” Apostle Dr Saakwa-Mante said. 

“Your smile was wide, and your heart overflowed with love. You were tolerant beyond measure, humorous in ways that could heal, and a master of any conversation. 

“There were proud moments, and there were not-so-proud moments. Yet as Susan Gale once said: ‘A father’s smile has been known to light up a child’s entire life’.” 

Apostle Dr Saakwa-Mante his late father named him Walter – a name meaning “Commander of the Army”, and that like Jacob renaming Benoni to Benjamin in the book of Genesis, his late father’s choice of name for him gave direction to his destiny; declaring that “so that I, too, might serve God’s people”. 

Evangelist George Botchway, a Gospel Missionary, preaching the sermon, at the funeral service at the Rev Ernest Bruce Memorial Methodist Church at Adabraka, Accra, said death was not the end of man’s life, but rather a transit to life eternity. 

He noted that judgement day was awaiting each human being and that he who lives in the word of God lives forever. 

“Invest your time in God’s word. Surrender your life to him. Never forget God in all that you do.” Evangelist Botchway said.

Ho, May 11, GNA – Reverend Mrs. Elizabeth Niboe-Wuasi, Women Desk Officer of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana Sunday said that there is no role in life more essential and challenging than motherhood. 

“Being a mother is one of the toughest jobs but fulfilling on the planet,” she noted. 

This was contained in her mother’s day message copied to the Ghana News Agency in Ho. 

Rev. Mrs. Niboe-Wuasi stated that the love and care displayed by mothers in the course of looking after their children could not be overemphasized. 

She noted that mothers work day and night zealously without the intention of getting anything as a reward in return. 

The Women Desk Officer said they wholeheartedly sacrificed all their needs and went hungry just to make sure the needs of their children are met. 

“Mothers sometimes have to sell their possessions to meet the demands of their children which they deem as a command and make them happy,” she said. 

She continued that mothers valued their children above all things and were ready to do everything to see them grow and mature. 

Rev. Mrs. Niboe-Wuasi said mothers expressed their love in countless ways through every task to provide emotional support. 

“You bring light into people’s lives,” she noted. 

Rev. Mrs. Niboe-Wuasi encouraged them to continue toiling to groom their children as the rewards that awaited were heartwarming and fulfilling. 

“May this day bring you endless smiles, good health and peaceful days surrounded by God’s blessings beyond measure,” she stated.

Simpler recipes and smart devices allow mothers to maximize their time without compromising on care. Additionally, many mothers are leveraging remote work and digital skills to build flexible careers. Certifications in Cybersecurity, Web Design, and Data Analytics now allow women to work from home, offering the dual benefit of professional growth and family presence.

Preparing financially for motherhood

Preparing financially for motherhood is a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of planning for a new chapter in life. While emotional and physical preparations – such as understanding the stages of pregnancy or adjusting to lifestyle changes – are undeniably important, financial readiness lays the groundwork for a more secure and confident transition into motherhood. Expenses such as prenatal checkups, labour and delivery plans, and setting up a safe and nurturing nursery can quickly add up. Without a clear and sustainable financial strategy, what should be moments of joyful anticipation can instead become sources of stress and uncertainty. Budgeting, saving, and understanding health coverage are just a few of the steps that can help ease this transition.

Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr. Murtala Ibrahim

The Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr Murtala Ibrahim, has emphasized the critical role of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education in preparing Ghana’s youth for a rapidly evolving world.

In a speech delivered on his behalf at the 20th Science and Makers Fair of Galaxy International School on Saturday, May 10, 2025, Dr. Murtala Ibrahim highlighted that STEAM equips students with technical skills, adaptability, and creative problem-solving abilities essential for lifelong learning.

The fair, themed “Empowering STEAM,” celebrated two decades of fostering innovation and collaboration among young Ghanaians.

Dr. Ibrahim noted that STEAM’s integration of arts with STEM fosters empathy and human-centered design, enabling students to develop sustainable solutions for challenges like climate change, clean energy, and agricultural productivity.

“The world of work is changing rapidly. Many jobs today’s students will hold in the next decade do not yet exist,” he said, stressing the need for inclusive education that empowers girls, rural youth, and marginalized communities.

The Minister also announced the upcoming Biannual Environment, Science, and Technology Fair in June and August 2025, aimed at showcasing Ghanaian innovation.

He invited the school to join the ministry’s “One Tree per Child” initiative, set to launch on World Environment Day, June 5, 2025, to promote environmental stewardship.

The Principal of Galaxy International School SHS, Mehmet Akmermer, praised the fair’s legacy of nurturing curiosity and creativity.

This year’s event featured over 70 exhibits and introduced a competitive element with 30 innovative STEAM projects. After a thorough judging process, Presec Boys Senior High School won first place, followed by Razan Mamdouh Hamoui (2nd) and Mohammed Abdus-Samad Abdulbaqi (3rd), both from Galaxy International School.

The winners received prizes for their outstanding projects.

The fair drew participation from schools including Methodist Girls High School, Sowah Din Basic School, and New Legon ADMA Model JHS. The event was support by Carmen Sita, TUDEC, Lancaster University, and Academic City.

Dr. Ibrahim commended Galaxy International School for its commitment to STEAM education and urged students to remain curious, courageous, and collaborative.

“You are the innovators and leaders we have been waiting for,” he said.

He also encouraged the students to shape Ghana’s transition to a green, inclusive, and prosperous future. Other personalities at the event included the Osu Mantse, Nortse Nii Nortey Owuo IV, an alumnus of Galaxy International School.

Ghanaian gospel trio, Daughters of Glorious Jesus has become the center of discussion after their vibrant performance at the just-ended Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

The music group during the awards night kept audiences on their feet while delivering most of their major hit songs such as “Wo Ntaban”, and “Aseda Ben” among others.

One of their striking performances which lit up the entire auditorium was when a member of the music group was seen displaying her talent behind the drums.

She was seen playing an introduction to their “Enn3 Manya Anigye” hit song.

A video shared on X where the music group was seen performing has raised several reactions among netizens on social media.

While some are complementing them for their amazing performance, others are praising them for staying consistent in the music industry ever since they released their debut album in 1990.

At least 12 houses were burnt down last night by unknown assailants in the Gumyoko community in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region.

This is believed to be a spillover of the long-standing chieftaincy conflict in neighbouring Bawku.

According to JoyNews security sources, similar attacks occurred three days earlier, bringing the total number of houses destroyed to over 20.

Sources reveal that residents had deserted the Gumyoko community nearly a month ago due to repeated attacks. The assailants allegedly exploited the empty settlement to burn down homes and other properties.

No arrests have been made so far.
