Trump signs order aimed at overhauling US elections

0

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that aims to overhaul US federal elections, including by requiring voters to show proof of citizenship and limiting when states can receive mail-in ballots.

Experts warn the move could disenfranchise millions of Americans who do not have easy access to a passport or other legal documents proving they have the right to vote.

It is unclear how enforceable the order is, given US states have wide legal leeway to determine how they run their elections. It is expected to be challenged in court.

The order, titled “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections”, was signed by Trump on Tuesday at the White House.

“Election fraud. You’ve heard the term. We’re going to end it, hopefully. At least this will go a long way toward ending it,” Trump said as he signed the order on Tuesday.

The order says that the US has failed “to enforce basic and necessary election protections” and calls on states to co-operate with the the White House or risk losing access to federal funding if they do not require proof of citizenship.

It is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in elections.

The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 prohibits non-citizens from voting in federal elections.

Every state is required to use a common registration form that requires people to confirm they are US citizens, under penalty of perjury for false claims, but does not require documentary proof.

Experts say there have been very few cases of immigrants voting illegally in US elections.

The order also seeks to bar states from accepting postal ballots received after election day. Currently, 18 states allow ballots to be received after election day as long as they were mailed on or before the day of the vote.

The order would withdraw federal funding for US states that do not comply.

Trump has been accused of spreading election misinformation, including by claiming that “millions” of illegal immigrants voted in his first election campaign. He also continues to deny that he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden.

Previous efforts to pass a voter ID law in Congress have failed.

Democrats who have criticised similar past reform attempts have pointed to statistics showing that a large number of Americans do not have an enhanced drivers licence or passport for ID.

The legal basis for the order is expected to be challenged in court.

“The president cannot override a statute passed by Congress that says what is required to register to vote on the federal voter registration form,” Wendy Weiser, from the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University, told the Washington Post.

UCLA law professor Rick Hasen said on his blog that elections are largely run by each individual state government, and that if allowed to stand, the order would radically shift power to the federal government.

2025 budget must ensure economic stability

0

The Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) has underscored the need for economic stability in the upcoming 2025 budget, stressing its critical role in sustaining businesses and improving livelihoods.

With the government set to present the budget on Tuesday, March 11, GUTA is urging policymakers to implement effective strategies that will strengthen the local currency and lower interest rates, as these measures will positively impact the broader economy.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, GUTA President Dr. Joseph Obeng reiterated the importance of stability in fostering economic growth and business confidence.

“We need stability, total stability of the economy. That we adopt measures to help strengthen and stabilize the local currency to reduce infiltration, interest rates to improve other economic indicators, especially the interest rate,” Dr. Obeng stated.

GUTA remains hopeful that the 2025 budget will introduce policies that address these concerns and create a more favorable business environment.

The number of sports personalities within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) minority caucus in the ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic has decreased following the 2024 general elections.

The NPP, who previously had three sports figures in the eighth Parliament, now have just two. The party had aimed to double its representation of sports personalities in parliament but only two out of the six sports personalities who contested the 2024 elections were successful.

The constituencies lost by the NPP sports figures include Ahafo Ano South East, Sunyani West, Asunafo North, and Asuogyaman.

Here are the two sports personalities on the NPP caucus in the ninth Parliament

Jerry Ahmed Shaib

Jerry Ahmed Shaib won the Weija Gbawe Constituency parliamentary seat in the Greater Accra Region. He amassed 32,608, which represents 51.70% of the total votes.

He has taken his political career a notch higher as he enters parliament for the first time.

He is the President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation and Assistant Secretary of the Ghana Olympic Committee.

Mustapha Ussif

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, won the parliamentary seat in Yagaba-Kubori in the Northern Region, retaining the seat for the second time.

He garnered 18,917 votes, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Musah Sibiri Amidu, polled 11,385 votes. There were 30,302 votes cast, with 497 being rejected.

The former sports minister is among the few NPP MPs who survived the tsunami that befell the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government in the parliamentary and presidential elections.

The Texas police have arrested and detained Pastor Isaac for murder The Texas police have arrested and detained Pastor Isaac for murder

Police authorities have arrested and detained a Ghanaian born Texas-based pastor, whose name has been given as Isaac, for allegedly stabbing his newly-wedded wife to death.

According to multiple reports, the suspect, Pastor Isaac, allegedly took the life of his wife after discovering a troubling truth about her, following their wedding.

Isaac, a leader of a church community also based in Texas, reportedly married the deceased, Sandra, who was also a member of his church.

They took vows to uphold Christian principles and preserve the sanctity of their faith, agreeing to abstain from premarital sex before their marriage, the reports said.

However, unbeknownst to Pastor Isaac, his partner Sandra harbored a secret, allegedly being transgender — a fact reportedly known by some members of the church, who chose to conceal it from the pastor.

The reports stated that Isaac only discovered this on the night after their wedding, while attempting to get intimate.

The suspect is further reported to have stabbed his wife repeatedly in a fit of rage after his shocking discovery, leading to her tragic death.

Reports indicate that investigations into the incident are still ongoing, with authorities continuing their inquiry.

The suspect is currently facing murder charges in connection with the tragic event.

Rising inflation needs inter-Ministerial collaboration — Govt Statistician

0

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has called for a collaborative, cross-sectoral approach to tackling inflation, emphasizing that it should not be seen as solely the responsibility of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

Instead, the GSS urged the inclusion of all government ministries in addressing the issue.

Historically, the BoG has relied on monetary policy to control inflation, including record-high interest rates in 2022.

In September 2024, the Bank reduced its monetary policy rate to 27%, marking its second rate cut since 2021. This move aimed to provide relief to borrowers and signalled easing inflationary pressures.

Prior to that, the policy rate had been held at 29% for nine months after a reduction from 30% in January 2024.

Despite these measures, recent data from the GSS indicates that the government missed its end-of-year inflation target of 15%.

Inflation climbed for the fourth consecutive month, reaching 23.8% in December 2024, up from 23.0% in November. The rise was largely attributed to surging food prices.

The GSS reiterated the need for coordinated efforts across various sectors to address the underlying causes of inflation and ensure sustainable economic stability.

“We definitely need to move the conversation away from a Central Bank’s responsibility alone. We need to tackle inflation at least from two perspectives. Every sector ministry we talk about in our release should be responsible.

“Our conversation focuses on the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. But, if you look at the items –  transport, housing, water, electricity and gas are dominant divisions. These ministries should be part of the conversation in driving down the rate of inflation,” Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim said.

For him, a coordinated and multi-ministerial effort is key to tackling inflation effectively.

“It will be a challenge speaking directly to what different state institutions should be doing differently. Especially, when you don’t know the details of what they are doing, apart from what you are told or you read.

“On the back of this, it will be important we step back and look at how Ghana Statistical Service is promoting the granular data from the headline figure. So we are calling for an inter-ministerial engagement if we want to bring down the rate of inflation”, Prof. Annim added.

Asenso-Boakye challenges road construction claims by Agbodza

0

Francis Asenso-Boakye, former minister for Roads and Highways Francis Asenso-Boakye, former minister for Roads and Highways

Francis Asenso-Boakye a former minister for Roads and Highways, has rejected assertions by Roads and Highways minister-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, regarding the scope of road construction under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Asenso-Boakye contested Agbodza’s claim that only 673 kilometres of new roads were constructed during the previous government’s eight-year tenure.

“Honorable Speaker, let me put on record that as of December 2024, per the transition report, the Akufo-Addo government had constructed 13,624 kilometres of road. This figure is significantly higher than the 4,630 kilometres constructed by the previous government over eight years,” citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said.

The Bantama Member of Parliament described the 13,624 kilometres as a record-breaking achievement, emphasizing that the total included various road infrastructure projects, such as asphalt overlays, gravelling, reconstruction, and the construction of bridges.

Asenso-Boakye argued that Agbodza’s focus on the 673 kilometres of newly constructed roads was misleading and failed to reflect the broader scope of work undertaken by the Akufo-Addo administration.

He underscored that while constructing new roads was important, other aspects like asphalt overlays and gravelling played a crucial role in improving the nation’s road network.

“Many of us represent rural communities and understand the importance of gravelling in linking people and improving accessibility in these areas. These projects are crucial and cannot be dismissed simply because they are not classified as new road constructions,” he remarked.

The former minister further outlined the administration’s efforts in road reconstruction and upgrades, revealing that 1,665 kilometres were rebuilt or improved during the eight-year tenure.

Tiger Woods confirms relationship with Trump’s ex daughter-in-law

0

Golfer Tiger Woods has announced he is dating Vanessa Trump, the former daughter-in-law of US President Donald Trump.

Vanessa, 47, was married to Donald Trump Jr for 13 years. The pair, who have five children, divorced in 2018.

On Sunday, Woods, 49, posted pictures of Vanessa and himself on social media saying: “Love is in the air and life is better with you by my side! We look forward to our journey through life together.”

“At this time we would appreciate privacy for all those close to our hearts.”

It is unclear what prompted the public announcement, but rumours of their relationship had been reported in gossip magazines in recent weeks.

Woods, who has won 15 major championships, is known for being guarded about his personal life after exposure of his marital infidelities and sex scandals damaged his public standing in the 2000s and affected his playing career.

He admitted himself into a sex addiction rehab clinic, and went through an acrimonious split from his first wife Elin Nordegren months later after six years of marriage. The couple have two children together.

US media outlets report that Tiger Woods’ children attend the same school as Vanessa Trump’s.

As the former wife of Donald Trump’s eldest son, Vanessa had been a regular attendee at official events involving Trump’s extended family during his first term in office.

Woods, the former world number one, is also known to have played golf with President Trump on several occasions, including last month. Trump loves golf and owns more than a dozen courses.

In February, Woods attended a meeting with Trump and Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) heads at the White House about the future of the sport’s tournaments and current division with the Saudi Arabia-LIV league.

Woods wore his Presidential Medal of Freedom, which was bestowed on him by Trump in 2019 during the president’s first term.

Woods announced an Achilles tendon injury earlier this month that has sidelined him from professional competition. He has not suggested a timeline for when he might return to the courses.

He has not competed in a PGA Tour event this season, following the death of his mother, Kultida, in February.

The new couple both have children who are junior golfers.

Kai Trump, 17, has announced her commitment to playing collegiate golf at the University of Miami in 2026.

She and Charlie Woods both played at a junior invite-only tournament in South Carolina last week.

Woods has previously announced relationships with World Cup champion ski racer Lindsey Vonn and Erica Herman, his former restaurant manager.

That relationship ended badly – Herman filed law suits against Woods and his trust in 2023, which she later withdrew.

You cannot fix trade deficits with tariffs – Dr Bawumia to world leaders

0

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is Ghana's former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is Ghana’s former Vice President

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has cautioned that using tariffs to address trade deficits is a flawed approach, describing it as historically ineffective.

Speaking at the 2025 International Democracy Union Forum in Brussels, Dr Bawumia stressed that trade imbalances stem from deeper macroeconomic challenges and cannot be resolved through tariff measures.

“There are clearly trade imbalances across continents and countries, but what we know from economics is that you cannot fix a trade deficit with tariffs, it just doesn’t work. Tariffs cannot correct macroeconomic imbalances, and any attempt to do so is bound to fail, as history has shown,” he stated.

He further noted that ongoing trade wars, particularly between major economies such as the United States and China, are largely driven by mistrust.

“The biggest challenge in all these negotiations is mistrust,” he said, urging global leaders to prioritize building confidence and transparency in trade discussions.

Dr Bawumia’s remarks come at a time when global trade tensions have fueled a rise in protectionism, with several nations imposing tariffs to protect domestic industries.

The Brussels forum brought together leaders and policy experts from around the world to deliberate on critical global issues, including the evolving dynamics of international trade and ongoing trade wars.

Dropping of 7-high profile cases: Ayine’s reasons contradictory

0

Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Dame, has strongly criticized his successor, Dr. Dominic Ayine, for dropping several high-profile cases.

During a press conference on Friday, February 14, Dr. Ayine defended his decision, citing a lack of common sense in some cases, the conduct of certain judges, defective charges, and professional considerations.

Since his appointment by President John Dramani Mahama, Dr. Ayine has dropped multiple high-profile cases, including those involving the former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Stephen Opuni, businessman Seidu Agongo, and others.

In a rebuttal press conference on Friday, Godfred Dame criticized Dr. Ayine’s justifications as contradictory and inconsistent, arguing that they reveal ulterior motives.

“I proceed to examine Dr Ayine’s reasons for withdrawing some of the criminal cases Dr. Ayine mentioned in his Press Statement. I find, generally, that all his explanations are laden with contradictions and inconsistencies and betray the questionable motives for his actions.”

I want to do music for movies, paint, make my own clothes – Black Sherif

Ghanaian musician Mohammed Ismail Sherif Kwaku Frimpong, better known by his stage name Black Sherif, has revealed that he plans to pursue other creative interests outside of music, including fashion and movies.

In an interview with UK-based Clash Magazine, the ‘Second Sermon’ hitmaker shared with his fans how he envisages his future to look like aside being a musician.

I never expected such betrayal from the NDC – Kwabena Marfo on party’s silence in Sammy Gyamfi dollar saga

0

Media personality Kwabena Marfo Media personality Kwabena Marfo

Media personality Kwabena Marfo has expressed disappointment in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over what he describes as the party’s abandonment of its National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, in the wake of his recent controversy.

Speaking on Neat FM on May 13, 2025, Marfo claimed that the majority of the leadership of the NDC has distanced itself from Gyamfi following the circulation of a viral video in which he is seen handing out US dollar bills to Evangelist Patricia Asiedua Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, a self-proclaimed repented priestess.

“What surprised me yesterday is that when Sammy Gyamfi had his issues, I expected NDC members to rally behind him. But if you listen to some of the commentary and utterances from within the party, you’d be shocked,” he said.

Marfo noted that despite the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board’s longstanding service and loyalty to the NDC, including significant personal investments in party activities and logistics, he is now facing public scrutiny without visible support from his party.

“Sammy Gyamfi gave motorbikes to all 275 constituency offices. Even in 2020, all regional communicators received Kia Picantos. When elections were approaching, he provided pickups fully equipped with sound systems,” Marfo recalled.

He expressed dismay that such contributions are now being overlooked.

“Just look at the sacrifices he made for the party. I didn’t expect this from them. People forget too easily. So, the NDC can’t even remember the good Sammy Gyamfi has done?” he asked.

Okatakyie Afrifa Breaks Silence on the Real Reason Behind His Dismissal from Angel FM

0

Prominent Ghanaian media figure, Okatakyie Afrifa, has finally shared the truth behind his unexpected exit from Angel FM, a well-known radio station in Ghana. In a recent interview, Afrifa revealed the startling reason behind his dismissal, leaving many Ghanaians in shock.

Afrifa explained that his troubles began when he started speaking out against the harmful galamsey activities affecting the country. He claimed that high-ranking officials, who were involved in the galamsey scandal, played a role in his removal from the station.

“In Ghana, if you speak out against wrongdoings, some influential people despise you for it,” Afrifa stated. “The galamsey issue became a severe problem in the country, and we had no choice but to expose the truth about those involved. If some people went to great lengths to get me fired because of this, so be it. But I will continue to stand by what I believe in, and I fear no one.”

Known for his bold and candid approach, Afrifa made it clear that he stands by the truths he shared on Angel FM and has a clear conscience. He challenged his critics, saying, “I’ve worked in radio and TV for 9 years, and has anyone ever taken me to court? If I was wrong, why didn’t they sue me?”

Afrifa also spoke about the incident where a group of people allegedly stormed Angel FM to intimidate him. He clarified that they were not from the Ga tribe, as some had speculated, but from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who he believes were behind the incident.

“The people who attacked Angel FM were not Gas,” Afrifa clarified. “I don’t want anyone blaming the Ga tribe for what happened. They knew my work hours were from 6:00 am to 10:00 am, but they came around 11:00 pm to cause trouble. Some said I was scared and fled, but that’s not true. What happened was politically motivated, and someone was behind it.”

Afrifa’s bravery and commitment to speaking out have earned him respect from many Ghanaians. His story highlights the struggles faced by journalists who dare to expose corruption and injustice in Ghana. Despite the challenges, Afrifa remains steadfast in his pursuit of truth and justice.

The 2 NPP Ashanti women trailblazing leadership in Parliament

0

Sarah Adwoa Safo (Left) and Patricia Appiagyei Sarah Adwoa Safo (Left) and Patricia Appiagyei

Ashanti’s are among the people known for daring and achieving great feats, sometimes even historic ones.

They also produce some of the best leaders, some of whom have been exemplified recently by the achievements of two remarkable women making significant impacts in Ghanaian politics.

Patricia Appiagyei, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Asokwa Constituency, has been recognized as a trailblazer after becoming Ghana’s first female Metropolitan Chief Executive (City Mayor) of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

She has served as MP since the seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana.

She currently serves as the Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, but only after she was Deputy Majority Leader in the 8th Parliament.

Similarly, and before Appiagyei, Sarah Adwoa Safo, the former MP for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, also made a lasting impression on politics in Ghana.

She was the first female Deputy Majority Leader in the country’s history and also served as the first female Minister of State in charge of Government Procurement.

The accomplishments of these two women have garnered widespread praise for them, with many considering them role models for future generations of women in leadership.

Their names were also highlighted in a post on Facebook by the Asante Nation, which celebrates and produces content on people from the Ashanti Region.

But in the long run, it is the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that is the biggest winner, of the sort, in all of these. This is because they are the only political party that has had women in leadership in Parliament, even if it has only been at the level of deputy leadership.

Below are brief profiles on the two women; Sarah Adwoa Safo, and Patricia Appiagyei:

Sarah Adwoa Safo:

Sarah Adwoa Safo was home-schooled and completed her GCE A’ Level examinations in 1998.

At just 17 years old, she enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana, where she earned her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree in 2002.

She then pursued further studies at the Ghana School of Law and was called to the Bar in October 2004 at the age of 22.

Safo holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from George Washington University and graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Procurement Law and Policy from the University of Nottingham in September 2022.

After a brief stint with the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C., she returned to Ghana.

In 2005, she joined the law firm Kulendi @ Law and later worked with Zoe, Akyea & Co. as a private legal practitioner.

Concurrently, she served as a Mediator on the Mediation Committee of the Legal Aid Board of Ghana.

For two years, Safo was the first legal officer at the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), where she played a key role in developing proposals that resulted in the establishment of the Appeals and Complaint Panel of the PPA, as well as the rebranding of the Public Procurement Board to become the Public Procurement Authority.

Safo was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya in 2012 and was re-elected in the 2016 and 2020 elections.

She served as the Deputy Majority Leader in the 7th Parliament and was the only female MP to hold the number two position on the Majority front.

In 2017, she was appointed Minister of State in charge of Government Procurement, a role she held until 2021, under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the 5th president of the 4th Republic of Ghana.

Patricia Appiagyei:

Patricia Appiagyei was the first female Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

She completed her secondary education at St Louis Senior High School in Kumasi and then attended Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where she studied economics.

From 2001 to 2005, she was appointed as the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister.

Following that, from 2005 to 2009, she served as the Municipal Chief Executive for Kumasi.

Currently, Patricia Appiagyei is the Member of Parliament for Asokwa and the Deputy Minority Leader.

In 2017, she was appointed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and approved by Parliament to serve as the Deputy Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Decades-long mystery of ginger cats revealed

0

Garfield, Puss in Boots, Aristocats’ Toulouse – cultural icons, maybe, ginger most certainly.

And now scientists across two continents have uncovered the DNA mystery that has given our furry friends, particularly males, their notable colour.

They discovered that ginger cats are missing a section of their genetic code, which means the cells responsible for their skin, eye and fur tone produce lighter colours.

The breakthrough has delighted the scientists and the thousands of cat lovers who originally crowdfunded the research.

The scientists hope that solving the puzzle could also help shed light on whether orange coloured cats are at increased risk of certain health conditions.

It has been known for decades that it is genetics that gives orange tabby cats their distinctive colouring, but exactly where in the genetic code has evaded scientists till now.

Two teams of scientists at Kyushu University in Japan and Stanford University in the US have now revealed the mystery in simultaneous papers published on Thursday.

What the teams found was that in the cells responsible for giving a cat its skin, hair follicles and eyes their colour – melanocytes – one gene, ARHGAP36, was much more active.

Genes are made up of pieces of DNA which give instructions to a cat’s cells, like other living creatures, on how to function.

By comparing the DNA from dozens of cats with and without orange fur, they found that those with ginger colouring had a section of DNA code missing within the ARHGAP36 gene.

Without this DNA, the activity of the ARHGAP36 is not suppressed, i.e. it is more active. The scientists believe that the gene instructs those melanocytes to produce lighter pigment.

Ginger cats mostly male

For decades, scientists have observed that cats with completely ginger colouring are far more likely to be male. This tallies with the fact that the gene is carried on the X chromosome.

Chromosomes are larger sections of DNA, and male cats, like other mammals, have an X and a Y chromosome, which carry different numbers of genes.

As it is a gene only on the X chromosome, in this case controlling the pigment production, then one missing piece of DNA is enough to turn a cat fully ginger.

In comparison, female cats have two X chromosomes, so the DNA needs to be missing in both chromosomes to increase lighter pigment production to the same extent – it means a mixed colouring is more likely.

“These ginger and black patches form because, early in development, one X chromosome in each cell is randomly switched off,” explains Prof Hiroyuki Sasaki, geneticist at Kyushu University.

“As cells divide, this creates areas with different active coat colour genes, resulting in distinct patches.”

They appear to be laying a glass table possible in a veterinary practice.
Calico and tortoiseshell cats with mixed colourings are more likely to be female

Although couched in science, the study originally started off as a passion project for Professor Sasaki.

He had retired from his university post, but as a cat lover said he wanted to continue working to uncover the orange cat gene in the hope it could “contribute to the overcoming of cat diseases”.

He and his team raised 10.6m yen (£55,109) via crowdfunding for the research from thousands of fellow cat lovers across Japan and the world.

One contributor wrote: “We are siblings in the first and third grades of elementary school. We donated with our pocket money. Use it for research on calico cats.”

Hiroyuki Sasaki/Kyushu University Professor Sasaki smiles and leans down towards the table where he is holding a calico cat, mixed orange and brown fur with intently staring green eyes. They are in a cat rescue centre with other cats on a play tower in the background
Professor Sasaki compared the genes of calico cats to those without, using local cats and an international genome database

The ARHGAP36 gene is also active in many other areas of the body, including the brain and hormonal glands, and is considered important for development.

The researchers think it is possible that the DNA mutation in the gene could cause other changes in these parts of the body linked to health conditions or temperament.

The ARHGAP36 gene is found in humans and has been linked to skin cancer and hair loss.

“Many cat owners swear by the idea that different coat colours and patterns are linked with different personalities,” said Prof Sasaki.

“There’s no scientific evidence for this yet, but it’s an intriguing idea and one I’d love to explore further.”

Tricycle operators call for legalization as tensions rise over KMA ban

0

The National Union of Tricycle Operators in Ghana has renewed its call for President John Mahama’s administration to legalize the operation of commercial tricycles in the country.

The union argues that the new government made a commitment to address the issue during its campaign, and they are now urging the administration to fulfil this promise.

According to the group, legalizing commercial tricycles would bring much-needed order to the sector, provide a safer environment for operators and passengers, and contribute to reducing the rising unemployment rate among Ghanaian youth.

They also emphasize the role of commercial tricycles in supporting livelihoods and easing transportation challenges in underserved areas, calling for swift action from the government to formalize their operations.

“With Tricycles, we face enormous challenges and one of the challenges has to do with legalization we are so happy that the new administration has already pledged, we have had countless meetings with the manifesto committee of the NDC and their commitment to legalize tricycle operation in the country, and we are looking forward to the fulfilment of that pledge.

“Not just the legalization but also we are looking at partnering with the new government to make sure that all the structures that we are having across the country are strengthened to lead the government to legalize it.”

Meanwhile, in 2023, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) issued a directive banning commercial tricycles from operating in certain parts of the city.

The move sparked widespread protests from tricycle operators, who argue that the ban is detrimental to their livelihoods.

The directive is still in effect, but former Kumasi Mayor Samuel Pyne has called on his successor to maintain the ban, despite pressure from operators to have it overturned.

“When we banned the tricycles from plying within the central present business district, I don’t think our predecessors should come and vary the decision of the assembly. Because if you had walked through the city this Christmas, though we had traffic, it was better with their presence not being felt there.”

Government dismisses claims of World Bank funding suspension

0

Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Deputy Minister of Finance

The government has firmly debunked reports suggesting that the World Bank has suspended funding to Ghana.

Addressing the issue at the launch of the 50th anniversary of the KNUST School of Medical Sciences in Kumasi, Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, described the claims as completely false, stating that no such communication has been received from the World Bank.

The Deputy Minister emphasised that the international financial institution does not operate arbitrarily and would formally engage the government if there were any valid reason to discontinue support for a particular project.

“The World Bank has not suspended any funding to Ghana. The World Bank does not work arbitrarily. If they have any just cause as to why a particular project should discontinue, they will engage government. As I speak now, we have no indication to that effect, so let us disregard that misinformation,” he stated on April 8, 2025.

The clarification comes in response to a widely circulated news item that falsely linked the purported funding suspension to the termination of certain individuals, and also featured a photo of Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George.

However, government has dismissed the claims and purported image as false.

In a related development, the government announced significant budgetary commitments to the education sector.

Following the recent decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy, the government has also uncapped the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

As part of this initiative, an amount of GH¢9.9 billion is being transferred to GETFund. Of this, GH¢3.5 billion has been allocated to support the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, with the remaining funds directed towards improving infrastructure across various educational institutions in the country.

How To Pack Your Natural Hair To Look Classy And Eye-catching

News Hub Creator1d

Packing your natural hair to look classy and eye-catching starts with ensuring your hair is well-moisturized and detangled, as this creates a smooth foundation for styling. Applying a leave-in conditioner and sealing with a light oil helps maintain hydration, preventing frizz and keeping your hair manageable throughout the day. Choosing the right protective style is key, as braids, twists, or buns can elevate your look while minimizing manipulation that leads to breakage. Accessorizing with headwraps, scarves, or decorative pins adds a polished touch, drawing attention to your hairstyle without overwhelming it. If opting for a puff or high bun, smoothing the edges with a bit of gel or edge control enhances neatness, giving a refined finish.

For twist-outs or braid-outs, gently separating the curls with your fingers creates volume and definition, making the style appear intentional and elegant. Incorporating satin or silk hair wraps at night preserves your style, reducing friction that causes tangles and maintaining its polished appearance. When using extensions or added hair, selecting textures that blend seamlessly with your natural hair ensures a cohesive and sophisticated look.

Lightly spritzing your hair with a hydrating mist refreshes curls and reduces dryness, keeping your style vibrant and eye-catching. Finally, confidence completes the look, as carrying yourself with assurance makes any hairstyle appear more intentional and stylish. By following these steps, your packed natural hair will not only stay protected but also exude class and charm, turning heads wherever you go.

I will rebuild Akufo-Addo’s destroyed statue

Prophet Elijah Joshua has pledged to rebuild ex-president Akufo-Addo's destroyed statue Prophet Elijah Joshua has pledged to rebuild ex-president Akufo-Addo’s destroyed statue

Prophet Elijah Joshua, founder of Glory and Dominion Ministry and an independent parliamentary candidate in the 2024 elections, has promised to rebuild the statue of former President Akufo-Addo that was vandalized by unknown individuals in Takoradi.

On Monday, January 13, 2025, news emerged about the destruction of the former president’s statue. This marks the second instance of damage to the monument, which was unveiled to honor his contributions during his tenure.

The first act of vandalism occurred on December 16, 2024, when unidentified individuals damaged the statue’s leg. Authorities repaired the statue shortly afterward, but no arrests were made in connection with the incident, leaving questions about the perpetrators’ motives unanswered.

The latest attack came less than a week after Akufo-Addo left office as president, with the statue now entirely toppled.

Authorities erected the statue during Akufo-Addo’s tenure to symbolize his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare and infrastructure in the Western Region.

Speaking about his decision to rebuild the statue, Prophet Elijah Joshua revealed that, in the spiritual realm, he learned that the actions of the unknown individuals could lead to significant spiritual consequences for Sekondi/Takoradi and the broader Western Region.

“There could be spiritual implications for Sekondi/Takoradi because of what these unidentified people have done. That is why I have come to beg the President, as this act is condemnable and unfortunate. I pledge to restore the damaged statue of former President Akufo-Addo. Politically, this is not a good precedent we are setting,” he said.

He continued: “As an independent candidate for Evalue/Ajomoro/Gwira, I see that one day, someone could do the same to me. Someone could also do the same thing to President Mahama’s statue when he exits office. I pledge to restore this statue, but if I do and someone destroys it again, that will be between the person and their God. I apologize on behalf of those who caused this damage. It was not right for them to take the law into their own hands and destroy the statue, no matter how unhappy they felt about it.”

Two assembly members in Jomoro Municipality confirmed dead Two assembly members in Jomoro Municipality confirmed dead

Two assembly members in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region have been confirmed dead after being knocked down by a 4×4 vehicle.

The incident occurred at Nyamenle Kwame on the deplorable Nuba-Tikobo Number One road on Saturday, April 26, 2025, around 5 p.m.

The deceased assembly members are Ransford Nana Otu Darko of the Elubo West Electoral Area and Francis Armoh of the Alaboale Electoral Area.

According to some assembly members who spoke to GhanaWeb’s Western Regional Correspondent, Daniel Kaku, on condition of anonymity, the two were returning to Elubo on a private motorbike after attending a meeting at Nawule in Jomoro when they were struck by a 4×4 vehicle traveling from the Samenye barrier toward Tikobo Number One.

They claimed that the driver of the vehicle veered off his path after swerving to avoid a pothole and crashed into the assembly members, killing them instantly.

Following the incident, the driver reportedly turned himself in to the police.

The bodies have since been deposited at a private morgue in Nyamenle Kwame for preservation and autopsy.

Some residents of Jomoro have described the incident as tragic and unprecedented, and they have called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the driver is held accountable.

Court Action Looms Over Appointments Revocation

Sammi Awuku

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana  Boakye, also known as  Nana B, has called on individuals whose appointment into the Public Service have been  revoked to exercise restraint as he initiates steps to battle it out in court.

In a social media message, Nana B described the move by the government as “unfounded”, as the President has failed to preserve and defend the Constitution of Ghana.

The National Organiser of the NPP said the termination of the appointment of these individuals were questionable, as they all followed due processes to secure their positions.

“Where is the legal justification for this action under our constitutional framework?” he quizzed, adding that President Mahama’s commitment to good governance should be extended to all sectors of the country and not to just a few individuals in the country and, therefore,  vowed to use all possible avenues to  overturn the decision.

The National Organiser of the NPP’s reaction is in response to a government directive that instructs all heads of government institutions to annul appointments made after the December 7, 2024 elections, citing non-compliance with good governance practices and principles.

The directive also mandates that a comprehensive report be submitted by February 17, 2025, on the actions taken to reverse these appointments.

Some members of the team prepared to support those whose appointment have been terminated include Nana Baffour Awuah, Nicholas Lenin Anane Adjei among others.

While many Ghanaians disagree with the decision by government that all those individuals are Ghanaians and were duly offered employment within the stipulated tenure of the NPP government and could not lose their jobs because of political expediency by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), others have also said that the NPP government after the December 7 elections could not offer employment for the current government to absorb that bill.

The former Majority Leader and former Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, for his part, said the NDC government cannot justify the termination since the processes of appointment of these people started in March 2024 but were issued letters after going through all the required processes expected of them.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has also condemned the recent directive issued by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and has called on the President to reconsider the decision, warning that it sets a “dangerous precedence” and threatens the future of Ghanaian youths.

“Mr. President, this is a Dangerous Precedence! Kindly reverse it! The future of Ghanaian youths is at stake in your latest directive,” he stated.

Mr. Awuku pointed out the inconsistency between the current directive and the stance taken by the Akufo-Addo government in 2017.

At that time, he said a leading member of the NPP, Yaw Osafo-Maafo had suggested revoking appointments made after the 2016 elections, but the Akufo-Addo administration rejected this suggestion, calling it unconstitutional and inconsistent with democratic principles.

According to him, the NPP had respected the full mandate of President John Mahama, running until January 6, 2017, and did not follow through with the revocation of any appointments.

“Why is it different today?” Mr. Awuku asked. “In 2017, we respected the continuity of the Mahama administration. Why is this principle being abandoned now?”

“The Akufo-Addo government’s decision not to revoke appointments made to key positions such as Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Auditor-General, and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) heads was based on the belief in due process and continuity,” Awuku noted.

‘Your Big Mouth Is Full Of Nonsense, God Will Disgrace You Worse Than Ogyaba Soon’ – Cecilia Marfo Hits Back At Diana Asamoah Over Ogyaba Scandal

0

Ghanaian gospel musician Cecilia Marfo has come to the defense of Prophet Ogyaba amidst the controversy surrounding him. This follows the allegations of him engaging in inappropriate behavior with a church member, which the pastor has openly admitted to. In a video, Cecilia Marfo addressed the situation, stating that there is nothing wrong with Prophet Ogyaba “chopping Cassie” and defended his actions.
She used the biblical example of David, saying, “David did the worst things but God still forgave him and used him for good works,” to emphasize that people can be forgiven for their mistakes and still be used by God.

However, she then turned on fellow gospel musician Diana Asamoah, who had previously called out Prophet Ogyaba over the allegations, labeling the pastor’s actions as “disgusting.” Cecilia didn’t hold back, criticizing Diana for her outspoken nature, accusing her of “only spewing nonsense” with her “big mouth.” She went further to warn Diana, stating, “Diana Asamoah should watch out because sooner or later, God will disgrace her even more than Ogyaba.”

First Sky Group advocates for legalisation of organ harvesting

0

Management of the First Sky Group has made a passionate appeal to government to legislate organ harvesting in the country to allow for the legal harvesting and transplant of vital body organs of donors, for patients of organ failure.

Speaking at the 22nd Anniversary Thanksgiving Service of the First Sky Group, Founder and Executive Chairman, Eric Seddy Kutortse revealed that the First Sky Group, in collaboration with the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, will present a statement before Parliament and receive a legal nod for the procedure.

The successful enactment of the procedure will provide support for renal, hepatic and cardiac patients.

“There is no legislation in Ghana concerning organ harvesting. There is a requirement to create a legislative regime that will support the establishment of the long-term organ harvesting programme in Ghana. A statement by the Organ Transplant Committee under the supervision of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has been drafted for discussion.

“It will be evaluated by the stakeholders for consideration as a workable legislative enacted by Parliament. This means the vital organ could be harvested for the use of the living that need to survive.”

However, addressing the gathering on behalf of the chairman for the event, President John Dramani Mahama, Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah announced that the President will dialogue with key stakeholders in efforts of legislating organ harvesting. This, he said, will immediately follow the appointment of a Health Minister.

“His Excellency says I should let you know that as soon as his Minister of Health is in place, the necessary legislation will be looked at in consultation with our various traditional authorities and advocacy from the various CSOs to ensure that we get this in place. Because as a country, kidney issues are becoming a bit rampant and we cannot sit unconcerned.”

Ghanaian students bag scholarships and excel at University of Nottingham

0

“A home away from home” is how Ghanaian students describe their experience studying at the University of Nottingham, UK.

Indeed, data shows that the University of Nottingham has been a popular destination among Ghanaian students for decades, with notable alumni including the distinguished Professor Nana SKB Asante who obtained his LLB (Hons) Degree in 1956 just a couple of years prior to Peter Ala Adjetey, a former Speaker of Parliament graduating with the same course. More recent alumni include the most recent first Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari who completed a PhD in Economics. Others are leading the way in their respective fields, with some taking the entrepreneurship route – Mildred Akotia completed MSc Food Production Management and is the founder of the popular Akwaaba Fine Foods snacks selling high quality cashew and other snacks.

The University of Nottingham prides itself on opening up opportunities for students from different backgrounds and has run its flagship masters scholarship programme, developing Solution, for over 25 years. Emmanuel Tetteh, completed KNUST and is now at Nottingham studying MSc Bioengineering. He received an automatic 20% scholarship due to holding a first-class degree from KNUST.

The good news doesn’t stop there, these students go on to fly the Ghanaian flag high performing strongly in their academics. At the winter graduation ceremonies in December 2024, a number of Ghanaians received prizes for outstanding academic performance.

“Receiving the Developing Solutions scholarship was a transformative opportunity for me, allowing me to pursue world-class higher education at my dream university. It not only acknowledged my academic ambitions but also provided the support I needed to thrive and reach my full potential.” Isaac Ardey, Prize winner for health research, Master of Public Health (Health Research) (2023-2024).

CDM Slams Mahama Over ‘Betrayal Of Trust’

0

President John Mahama

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has sharply criticised President John Dramani Mahama and his administration for what it describes as a betrayal of trust, following the government’s failure to abolish the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy.

The group, in a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday, said Mahama’s U-turn on the levy, despite promising its removal during the 2024 election campaign, undermines public confidence in his leadership.

According to the CDM, the President had repeatedly labelled the tax as “needless” and pledged to eliminate it to ease the economic burden on ordinary Ghanaians.

This promise, the group noted, was a central theme of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s campaign and was embraced by many citizens suffering under inflation and economic hardship. The decision to maintain the levy, now attributed to International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditionalities, has left many disillusioned.

The CDM argues that political leadership must be anchored in integrity and consistency, warning that Mahama’s reversal signifies a dangerous precedent of prioritising expediency over principle.

The group cited Article 36(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which obliges the state to ensure the right to decent living standards, suggesting that the continued levy contravenes both national and international obligations.

Calling for immediate action, the CDM demanded a clear roadmap for abolishing the tax, a formal apology from the President, and a legislative reaffirmation of ethical governance.

“To continue collecting this levy while citing IMF conditions is not only contradictory but demeaning,” the group said, urging the Mahama administration to restore public trust through moral leadership.

Oppong Nkrumah’s fear-mongering on tariffs is misplaced

0

Financial analyst and economist Scott Bolshevik Financial analyst and economist Scott Bolshevik

A financial analyst and economist Scott Bolshevik has described the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee Kojo Oppong Nkrumah’s comment regarding potential tariffs on Ghana’s cocoa exports to the US as “fear-mongering”

According to him, these fears allayed by the Ofoase Ayirebi lawmaker are misplaced, stating that Ghana’s cocoa export share to the US is just 10 percent of the total cocoa exports, or about 4.5 percent of Ghana’s overall exports.

Oppong Nkrumah recently raised concerns about the impact of a possible 10% tariff on Ghana’s cocoa exports, claiming it would significantly harm the country’s economy.

This sparked widespread conversations, as experts argue that the lower tariff on Ghanaian cocoa gives it a competitive edge in the US market over its Ivorian counterpart, making his concerns overblown.

In a post shared on his X page, as sighted by GhanaWeb Business, Bolshevik pointed out that Ghana’s cocoa exports are far more heavily reliant on the Netherlands, which takes in 35% of the nation’s cocoa, suggesting that the potential tariff would have a less dramatic impact than suggested.

“Ghana exports cocoa to 8 nations. Netherlands leads with 35%, the US is just 11%. The US takes 4.5% of Ghana’s overall export” he posted.

Comparing Ghana to neighbouring Côte D’ivoire, Bolshevik said, Côte D’ivoire already faces a 21% tariff on its cocoa exports to the US at a much higher rate.

Despite this, Côte D’ivoire has continued to be a strong competitor in the global cocoa market, leaving room for Ghana to absorb a 10% tariff and remain competitive, particularly with its relatively smaller share in the U.S. market.

“Now Côte d’Ivoire has 21% tariffs on cocoa to the US, so a 10% tariff on Ghana cocoa exports is advantageous,” he pointed out.

He, however, asserted that Ghana’s cocoa industry is in a much better position to handle the risks of tariffs than previously suggested, labelling Oppong Nkrumah’s views as misleading.

Consult ‘experienced’ Mahama Ayariga on sporting issues – Sannie Daara to Kofi Adams

Former GFA Communications Director, Ibrahim Sannie Daara Former GFA Communications Director, Ibrahim Sannie Daara

Former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ibrahim Sannie Daara has advised Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams to seek guidance from Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, on sporting issues.

He stated that Ayariga’s brief stint as sports minister has equipped him with the necessary knowledge and experience to tackle challenges in football and other disciplines.

The former GFA spokesperson highlighted Ayariga’s contribution to the team’s performance in the 2015 AFCON, where they reached the finals.

“I urge Kofi Adams to consult Mahama Ayariga, who has experience working as sports minister. After the scandal in Brazil, Ayariga worked closely with the GFA and other ministries to secure funding for the Black Stars.

“He was also with the team during the AFCON qualifiers and the 2015 AFCON finals. These are the people Kofi Adams should consult, and I believe he will succeed if he does,” he said during an interview with Sporty FM.

Sannie Daara also cautioned Kofi Adams to be mindful of his public comments to avoid implicating himself on critical issues.

“Kofi Adams must be careful with his words to avoid trouble. He should consult properly before speaking,” he added.

Kofi Adams was recently approved as the Minister of Sports and Recreation by the parliamentary Appointments Committee after a successful vetting.
