Kumasi Mayor orders traders off pavements ahead of decongestion exercise

0

Newly confirmed Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has issued a strong warning to traders operating on pavements within the Central Business District and Central Market to vacate their spots immediately.

The directive forms part of a major decongestion campaign set to begin next week, aimed at restoring order and improving movement across the city.

The Kumasi Mayor, who secured overwhelming support from Assembly Members, assumed office with a firm commitment to tackling congestion—an issue that has long plagued the metropolis.

Speaking after his confirmation on Thursday, April 10, Mr. Ofori Agyemang Boadi announced that the KMA would roll out a sweeping decongestion exercise in the coming week.

He emphasized that while the operation would not involve the military, it would be implemented using innovative approaches designed to maintain commercial activity while reclaiming public spaces.

In addition, he outlined plans to revive key stalled infrastructure projects, notably the Krofrom Market and the second phase of the Central Market redevelopment.

“With the Kejetia phase two, the contractors are on site, the energy that we are expecting to see is not what we are seeing. The regional minister has been working on it for some time.
“I will get a briefing from him on whatever has transpired. I believe that by the end of President Mahama’s tenure, the Kejetia market will be ready,” he stated.

Touching on sanitation, the Mayor expressed concern about the high level of indiscipline in the city and pledged to enforce KMA by-laws strictly.

“Kumasi should expect cooperation, discipline. There is a lot of indiscipline in our metropolis. In all humility, I am going to ensure strict compliance with the Assembly to the by-law that manages our city. If you are selling on the pavement, adjust yourself.

“If you are in the middle of any dual carriageway road, especially within the central business district, please get out of the place. Because from Wednesday, we will get on the street and make sure that we clear Kumasi from all the filth that we see.

“With the decongestion, we will not apply the forces of military men. Everybody wants to sell at Adum, so we will find some ingenious way to keep them in Adum and decongest Adum,” he directed.

The team manager of the Black Stars, Ameenu Shardow, has expressed strong confidence in Otto Addo’s ability to succeed as head coach of the senior national team.

Addo, who previously worked as a talent coach at Borussia Dortmund, came under intense criticism after failing to secure Ghana’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Amid widespread calls for his dismissal following a series of poor performances, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) chose to strengthen the technical team rather than part ways with him.

In a remarkable turnaround, the 49-year-old coach led the Black Stars to consecutive victories over Chad and Madagascar in the Matchday 5 and 6 fixtures of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. These wins ended Ghana’s six-game winless streak and revived hope among supporters.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Shardow praised Addo’s character and work ethic, highlighting his drive and willingness to adapt.

“He’s young, he’s driven, very passionate, and he’s willing to learn. He’s willing to listen to alternative perspectives,” he told Asempa FM.

The back-to-back victories have propelled the Black Stars to the top of Group I with 15 points, three points clear of Comoros, with four matches remaining in the qualification campaign.

Ghana is set to face Chad and Mali in their next qualifiers, scheduled for September later this year.

The formal handing-over ceremony was attended by high-profile dignitaries, including the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh; the Volta Regional Minister; the Korean Ambassador to Ghana; and the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea.

He stressed that achieving high-quality universal health coverage requires collective participation and collaboration across government agencies, sectors, and communities.

“This model health centre stands as a testament to our shared commitment to ensuring quality healthcare for all,” Akandoh stated.

Oti residents condemn destruction of Akufo-Addo’s statue

A section of residents in the Oti Region has added their voices to condemn the destruction of a statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The statue, located at Effia-Nkwanta in the Western Region, was vandalized, sparking widespread outrage and mixed reactions among Ghanaians.

However, in contrast to the anger and vitriol expressed by some, residents of the Oti Region are calling for respect and civility.

They argue that the destruction of the statue is not only an act of vandalism but also a reflection of a broader societal problem.

John Yaw Benyenase, former Assembly Member of Dambai Central, expressed his disappointment over the destruction of the statue, stating that such an act of vandalism is uncharacteristic of Ghanaians and is unheard of in other parts of the world.

Benyenase emphasized that dismantling the statue is not an act of bravery but a sign of backwardness, describing it as a serious offense that should be treated as a crime.

He added that such behavior has no place in a civilized society and should be condemned by all.

“This cannot happen anywhere in the world except Ghana; it’s a shame and a disgrace to our democracy and national cohesion. We should be promoting respect, tolerance, and civility, not destroying statues and public property,” he said.

Madam Gertrude Abena, a resident of the Krachi Nchumuru District, strongly condemned the act of vandalism, calling for a thorough investigation and swift action to arrest the perpetrators.

She joined the growing chorus of voices denouncing the destruction, emphasizing the need for accountability and respect for public property.

Peter Yaw Awuranyi, former District Chief Executive (DCE) in Krachi East under President John Dramani Mahama’s first administration, also spoke out against the destruction of the statue, describing it as a “rude and unpleasant” act.

The former DCE condemned the attitude and behavior displayed by the perpetrators at Effia-Nkwanta, emphasizing the need for civility in public discourse.

The Headmaster of the school, Raymond Mensah, who had informed the Queen Mother of the students’ plight, also expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the timely donation, stating: “The school uniforms will have a significant impact on the students’ academic performance and overall well-being.”

Nana Konadu Yiadom’s generosity is a shining example of the positive impact that individuals with compassionate hearts can have on their communities.

Ghanaian Businesses Kick-Start Initiative To Reduce Single-Use Plastics

0

Participants at the event

In a bold step to address the growing environmental crisis caused by Single-Use Plastics (SUP), 5 (five) major supermarkets and other related businesses have assented and committed to the implementation of a Voluntary Pact, to phase down Single-Use Plastics in Ghana.

These include Sneda Shopping Centre, Neha Supermarket, All Needs Supermarket, Decathlon Ghana, and Green Butterfly Market.

This follows the successful launch of the Voluntary Pact initiative, co-designed by Plastic Punch together with major supermarkets, CSOs and other organisations. The pact signifies the collective commitment to the 50% reduction of Single Use Plastic bags in Ghana by 2030, contributing to environmental stewardship, promoting sustainable business practices, and supporting Ghana’s national sustainability goals.

Under the Voluntary Pact initiative, implementing businesses will receive capacity-building trainings to enhance their operations in sustainable practices. The initiative will also embark on an awareness campaign dubbed “Bag The Habit” to promote corporate and business environmental responsibility. Among other things, the campaign will seek to encourage the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives to the use of SUP across key sectors.

The Voluntary Pact initiative is beyond single use plastic waste reduction; it’s about fostering a cultural shift toward sustainable business operation and consumer behaviour. By engaging stakeholders across sectors, we aim to drive behavioral change, enforce supportive policies, and create a lasting impact on Ghana’s environment,” said Hobson Kwame Agyapong, Principal Program Officer – Intersectoral Network Department, Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

Head of Plastic Punch, Richmond Quarcoo, also indicated that, “the campaign will leverage public education to amplify messages around SUP reduction to inspire broader adoption of sustainable practices. We are calling on all supermarkets and eateries to join us on this quest to influence consumer behaviour towards single use plastic through our packaging”.

The initiative is part of the Go Circular project, implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Mining boom fueled Ghana’s 2024 economic growth

0

Headquarters of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Headquarters of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has confirmed that Ghana’s economy outperformed projections in 2024, with the mining and construction sectors serving as primary growth engines.

The findings support earlier assertions by Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson regarding the nation’s economic trajectory.

An IMF delegation led by Mission Chief Stéphane Roudet conducted a comprehensive review during their April 2-15, 2025, visit to Accra as part of Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program evaluation.

The team noted remarkable economic improvements, particularly in external sector performance.

“Growth in 2024 was higher than expected, underpinned by strong mining and construction activity. The external sector has seen a considerable improvement, driven by solid exports, particularly gold and, to a lesser extent, oil, and higher remittances.

“As a result, international reserves accumulation has far exceeded the ECF-supported program targets,” she stated.

This endorsement follows Dr Cassiel Forson’s March 11, 2025, parliamentary presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement, where he credited Ghana’s 5.7% GDP expansion to heightened mining sector activity, including both regulated operations and informal small-scale mining (galamsey).

The minister had specifically identified mining and quarrying as the principal catalyst for the country’s economic upswing.
