Remembering May 9th Accra Sports Stadium Disaster, 24 Years On

0

Twenty-four years ago today, what was meant to be an exhilarating football match between Ghana’s top clubs—Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko—descended into horror. The date, May 9, 2001, is etched into the national memory as the darkest day in Ghana’s sporting history.

It was the day 126 people lost their lives at the Accra Sports Stadium in a disaster that would forever change the face of Ghanaian football—and leave a scar on the soul of the nation.

The match had all the hallmarks of a classic. Hearts of Oak staged a dramatic comeback, scoring two late goals to win 2–1. But what followed shattered the jubilation. Angry over a referee’s decision and their team’s defeat, Kotoko fans began hurling bottles and plastic seats onto the pitch. Riot police, stationed in anticipation of unrest, responded with force—firing tear gas into the crowd.

What came next was chaos.

Blinded by the gas and overcome by panic, thousands tried to flee. But with several gates locked and poor stadium design creating deadly bottlenecks, escape proved impossible for many. As fans surged toward limited exits, the crowd crush turned fatal. By the end of the hour-long nightmare, 116 had died of compressive asphyxia, and 10 more from trauma. Families were left shattered. Ghana was left in mourning.

In a shocking twist of fate, one fan, Abdul Mohammed, was mistakenly taken for dead. Only when someone stepped on his foot in the morgue did he regain consciousness, narrowly avoiding being buried alive. His survival story stands out in a day otherwise defined by tragedy.

Eyewitness accounts and official investigations painted a grim picture of what went wrong. The stadium was described by the Ghana Institute of Architects as a “death trap.”

Medical staff had reportedly left before the disaster unfolded, and many of the gates were inexplicably locked. An inquiry blamed the police for overreacting with excessive force, accusing them of dishonesty and negligence. Six officers were charged with 127 counts of manslaughter but were ultimately acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

The aftermath prompted a national reckoning. President John Agyekum Kufuor declared three days of mourning. The Premier League was suspended for a month. In 2007, the stadium was renovated to meet FIFA standards, though maintenance issues have persisted over the years.

But out of the ashes of despair, a culture of remembrance has grown.

Led by former Asante Kotoko chairman Herbert Mensah, the May 9th Remembered movement was born. From street walks in Kumasi and memorial wreath-layings to prayers in mosques and support for victims’ families and their 148 children, the annual tributes have become a staple of Ghana’s sporting calendar. The symbolic “May 9th Cup” was introduced in 2016, and in front of the stadium now stands a bronze statue titled “I Am My Brother’s Keeper”—a powerful reminder of the need for compassion in crisis.

Yet, for all the gestures and grief, some believe more must be done. Mensah has repeatedly called on the government to formally recognise May 9th as a national day of remembrance—so far, to no avail.

As Ghana remembers this solemn anniversary, one truth stands above all: May 9th is not just history. It is a call to vigilance, empathy, and national accountability.

Never again.

You lost a battle, not the war – Ya-Na consoles Bawumia

0

The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, has offered words of encouragement to former Vice President and the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urging him not to view his electoral defeat as the end of his presidential ambitions.

Speaking at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Thank You Tour of the Northern Region, the Ya-Na told Dr. Bawumia that losing his first presidential bid does not mark the end of his political journey.

“Your electoral loss is a battle lost but not the war to lead the development of our dear nation,” the Ya-Na said, drawing comparisons with former President John Dramani Mahama’s comeback after defeats in 2016 and 2020 before his victory in the 2024 elections.

“This is only your first attempt, and there are several chances ahead. All that we need is to pray for a longer life and good health. May Allah continue to guide and guard you in all your endeavours,” the Dagbon King added.

The Ya-Na praised Dr. Bawumia’s contributions to national development during his tenure as Vice President, particularly in areas of digital innovation and economic transformation.

“We recognise your contributions to Ghana’s development, particularly in digitalisation and economic modernisation initiatives during your tenure as Vice President,” he said. “With determined efforts, you spearheaded several transformative projects, including Ghana’s digital addressing system and mobile money interoperability. All these have not gone unnoticed, and Ghanaians are grateful for your efforts.”

He advised Dr. Bawumia to maintain his commitment to national service despite the electoral setback.

“So I entreat you to still have the interest of this country at heart and not despair prematurely.”

In response, Dr. Bawumia expressed his deep appreciation to the Ya-Na for his enduring support, guidance, and blessings.

The NPP’s tour aims to express gratitude to supporters and traditional leaders across the country following the party’s performance in the 2024 general elections.

Adu-Boahene knew the opposition party he was referring to and its not NDC – Dr Rashid-Tanko

0

Dr Rashid-Tanko Computer is the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC Dr Rashid-Tanko Computer is the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC

The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Tanko Rashid Computer, has refuted allegations that the party, while in opposition, received funds from the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, who has been accused of embezzling state resources.

Addressing the matter, Dr Rashid Computer firmly stated that the NDC had no engagements or financial transactions with Kwabena Adu-Boahene and completely dissociates itself from the allegations.

He further asserted that the opposition political party allegedly involved, as referenced by Adu-Boahene, is well aware of its identity, and that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is also fully aware of which party was truly implicated.

“On authority, I’m telling you that the NDC has nothing to do with what came out of that story. When he spoke about opposition, he knew the opposition party he was talking about, and everybody knows it.

“Even those people whom they are referring to helped them in their recent demonstration. You know their partners, that is who he was referring to. Everybody would have seen that, and no right-thinking person would think that our [NDC] arch opponent will give us resources to defeat him in an election. Does it make sense?” he said on JoyNews on Friday, May 9, 2025.

His comments come in response to revelations made by Kwabena Adu-Boahene, who, along with his wife, is at the center of a high-profile corruption scandal involving the alleged diversion of funds meant to enhance Ghana’s cybersecurity infrastructure into their personal accounts.

In a detailed account, Adu-Boahene claimed that an amount of US$500,000 was used in September 2024 to purchase “communications equipment” for an opposition political party.

Some Ghanaians have speculated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which was in opposition at the time, is the party referred to by Adu-Boahene in his claim.

However, the NDC has strongly denied any involvement, with Dr Rashid Computer asserting that the party had no dealings with Adu-Boahene and is not connected to the alleged transaction.

Injured Abdul Fatawu Issahaku vibes to Fancy Gadam tune as he nears return

Fatawu Issahaku, is a player of Leicester City Fatawu Issahaku, is a player of Leicester City

Ghanaian winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku may still be sidelined with a serious knee injury, but that hasn’t stopped him from finding joy through music and meaningful recovery steps.

The 21-year-old, currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, was seen in a social media video enjoying a new release by Northern music star Fancy Gadam.

The video shows Issahaku singing along and making several playful gestures while vibing to the song.

Off the pitch, however, Issahaku is making encouraging progress.

After months of rehabilitation, the Leicester City winger has finally returned to the grass, engaging in light drills and ball work, his first since undergoing surgery in late 2024.

The former Sporting CP forward sustained the injury during Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Angola in November 2024, where he was forced off at halftime after feeling discomfort in his knee.

Medical tests later confirmed the ACL damage, ruling him out for the rest of the 2023/24 season, a major blow to both Leicester City and the Black Stars.

Before his setback, the former Dreams FC star had featured in 11 league games for Leicester, providing two assists and becoming a key part of the squad under manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Now, with the 2025/26 season approaching, Issahaku’s return to light training is a promising sign that he could be fit in time for pre-season.

If You’ve Never Been A Dress Person, These 31 Options May Change Your Mind

Check it out on TikTok.

Promising reviews: “Bought this dress because I always wanted to get the House of CB dress but didn’t want to pay over $250 for it. It’s honestly so good! I got the size large in this since they didn’t have my normal sizes, which are small to medium (I have a bigger chest, so I tend to size up). But since this has a corset back, I was able to cinch it up really tight, and it fit perfectly!” —Chris Herfurth Kennedy

“Beautiful, stunning perfection. This may be the best thing I’ve ever bought on Amazon. The corset in the back makes it fit like it was made for me. It’s double-lined and not see-through at all, even though it’s white. The straps are adjustable, the slit is a good height, and the fabric is slightly stretchy. I cannot say enough good things about it. It did come slightly wrinkly in the skirt, but nothing that a good steam won’t fix.” —Shoshanna

Interior Minister engages Zongo Chiefs on combating drug abuse

0

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating illegal drug use and trafficking, particularly within Zongo communities.

Speaking during a community engagement with Zongo Chiefs and Muslim opinion leaders at Abossey Okai New Zongo in Accra, the Minister underscored the critical role of law enforcement in addressing the menace.

He warned that individuals involved in drug-related activities, regardless of their status or affiliations, will face the full rigour of the law.

“The abuse and trafficking of illegal drugs not only destroys lives but also disqualifies individuals from accessing government opportunities and programmes,” he said, urging the youth to shun drugs and make the most of available development initiatives.

Alhaji Muntaka also highlighted the broader social and economic consequences of drug use, calling on community members to be vigilant and proactive.

He encouraged Chiefs, Imams, and community leaders to take a firm stand against drug use, report suspicious wealth, and help expose criminal activity.

“No one will be spared. The law will catch up with anyone involved in drug-related offences,” he stated.

The Minister further emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in upholding the rule of law.

He advised against mob justice, instead urging residents to report wrongdoers to the appropriate authorities.

Addressing the youth directly, Muntaka appealed to them to align with government efforts aimed at improving livelihoods.

He urged them to uphold Islamic values and protect the integrity and future of their communities.

The Chief of Zongo in Accra, Yaaya Amisu Baako, expressed appreciation for the Minister’s visit and pledged the support of traditional and religious leaders in tackling the drug menace.

This engagement marks a renewed call for collaboration among stakeholders in building safer, healthier, and more prosperous communities.

Foreign Affairs Ministry begins home Passport delivery

0

In a significant move to streamline passport acquisition in Ghana, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially rolled out a home and office passport delivery service for applicants.

The initiative, which took effect on Friday, May 9, is being led by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. It is part of a strategic partnership with Ghana Post and local delivery company Troskit, aiming to ensure that applicants receive their passports within 15 days of application.

Speaking to the media about the reform, Minister Ablakwa said the new service is designed to address longstanding issues, including bureaucratic delays and interference by middlemen, commonly known as “goro boys.”

“Ghanaian passport applicants are no longer required to go back to the passport application centre for their passports. We have introduced peculiar services, making sure that passports are delivered to the comfort of the homes or offices of applicants,” he said.

He further revealed that the passport office now operates 24 hours a day in line with President Mahama’s vision of establishing a 24-hour economy.

“The passport office, you may also have heard, is now operating 24 hours in line with President Mahama’s vision of launching Ghana into a new era of the 24-hour economy. We have also introduced e-tracking to allow passport applicants to follow the process right from application to delivery,” Ablakwa explained.

“We are doing all these reforms to make sure that we do away with bottlenecks and end that phenomenon of goro boys middlemen taking advantage of the bureaucracy and delay in the passport acquisition process,” he added.

Growth Investment, Maagrace Garments Partner to Strengthen Clothing Manufacturing Industry

0

Growth Investment Partners (GIP) Ghana Ltd, an investment platform established by British International Investment (BII), has announced an investment in Maagrace Garments Industries Limited (MGIL), a leading Ghanaian garment manufacturing company.

The investment will finance the construction of a new production facility at MGIL’s premises in Koforidua, aimed at developing the industry by boosting production capacity, increasing export volumes, and creating employment at scale—particularly for women and youth.

MGIL is a subsidiary of Ethical Apparel Africa (EAA), an apparel sourcing and manufacturing firm headquartered in the United Kingdom.

MGIL currently employs over 700 direct workers, with 72 % of its workforce being women. The company exports over 90% of its products to major international brands based in the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe. EAA has a strong social purpose and has a mission to create over 10,000 quality manufacturing jobs in West Africa by 2030, while shaping the emerging apparel ecosystem to prioritise people and protect the planet.

Jacob Kholi, Chief Executive and Investment Officer of GIP Ghana said, “This investment is a testament to Ghana’s industrial potential and our ability to compete globally in ethical garment manufacturing. MGIL’s track record in creating jobs—especially for women—while driving export growth aligns with our mission to back scalable and inclusive businesses.”

Since acquiring MGIL, EAA has invested heavily in productivity-enhancing technologies, including solar power systems, digital pattern software, smart metal detection, and a custom enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform. These innovations have doubled productivity and enabled the successful transfer of technical skills to local middle managers.

Keren Pybus, Co-Founder and CEO of Ethical Apparel Africa commented, “We are delighted to partner with GIP to further expand MGIL’s operations. This investment supports our vision of building a world-class garment industry in Ghana—one that raises the standard for ethical manufacturing, women’s empowerment, and environmental responsibility.”

The expansion of the Koforidua facility will more than double existing capacity through installation of new production equipment and warehousing space. The company estimates the expansion will support the creation of over 1,000 additional jobs by 2026.

Maagrace is deeply committed to measuring and continuously improving worker well-being, having already built an on-site wellness centre and implemented pay structures that offer wages four times higher than previous average earnings. MGIL is actively working toward a 60% female leadership target and is recognized as a 2X-aligned company for its measurable progress in gender inclusion. It is also playing a key role in establishing Ghana as a highly competitive garment manufacturing hub, attracting foreign direct investment and contributing to the country’s foreign exchange earnings as an export-focused business.

Women In Sustainability Africa (WiSA) launched to accelerate closure of SDG gaps

0

Women In Sustainability Africa (WiSA), has been launched on behalf of all women of Africa to mark a new beginning to accelerate growth towards the closure of the SDG gaps including gender inequality.

The event, which was held at the Wesley Towers in Accra, Ghana brought together stakeholders to drive the sustainability agenda.

Speaking at the launch, the Founder of WiSA and Convener for the event, Nana Yaa Serwaa Sarpong, stated that the key to bridging the gender inequality gap is two pronged.

First is the recognition of women as a source of labour with positive return on every investment that is made to build capacity in women and second is men standing side by side with women to lift up and empower women.

Against the first backdrop, she said if governments invest in women, there would be a return on investment, because women a major source of labour to any economy in Africa and if she were a subsistence farmer, “now she would be doing industrial farming, that is a higher productivity and higher capacity, and the GDP will improve.”

Secondly Nana Yaa Serwaa Sarpong, said when God created the earth, he urged both men and women together to be fruitful, take dominion and multiply.

“Gender inequality gap cannot be closed by women alone, when God created the earth, he empowered both the man and woman together and he said be fruitful and take care of the world I have given you,” she noted.

Against this backdrop, she said if the gender equality gap can close, there must be catalytic efforts that cause a revolution in order to achieve such goal.

She said, therefore, there is a need for unity; men and women standing side by side to lift women up, because there is strength in togetherness and gain for everyone.

She said, this is the new dimension of gender empowerment and the new wave which must be propagated across Africa without any antagonism between men and women.

“That’s why it is an African agenda we need to stand together, there is strength in numbers. The door of success we seek to enter as women, the men are holding the keys to the room, if you fight with them how do we enter the room ?,” she quizzed.

Nana Yaa who is also founder of the League of Extraordinary Women said, WiSA will work with men, he for she champions, CSOs, Corporate Institutions, local and International Development Organisations to bring all women and women groups together (especially those at the grassroots level) to foster the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across Africa.

Speaking at the event, Ghana’s Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, said, recognising the proportionate impact of climate change on women, the Ministry has developed a roadmap to strengthen the gender responsiveness of social protection programmes.

According to her, this initiative aims to ensure that their interventions are inclusive, equitable and effective in building resilience among vulnerable populations.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’m pleased to use this occasion to announce that in alignment with WiSA’s vision, the Ministry will launch a campaign dubbed Women Labour Day” she revealed.

This campaign will be celebrated as part of the activities of May 1, and throughout the month of May every year.

She disclosed that in partnership with WiSA and other stakeholders, the Ministry will work towards using this campaign to nationally and continentally recognise women as sources of labour and agents of sustainability.

She said, this campaign would be rolled out in schools, media platforms and community spaces.

“Let this be more than a summit, let it be a starting point for renewed action and strengthened alliances. Let us charge forward as a united force where women are seen, heard, valued and empowered to lead sustainability,” she further added.

The Minister said, “To all men who lift women as equals, with women, we stand with you, together we will build a sustainable Africa.”

Ghana’s Minister of State in charge of Climate Change and Sustainability, Hon. Issifu Seidu, on his part said, “African women have always been the backbone of our communities, playing key roles in agriculture, healthcare, education, and the informal economy. However, their contributions remain undervalued and underappreciated in many spheres of society.”

“Today, as we launch WiSA, we take a stand to change that. Women are not just a part of the labour force—they are the driving force behind our sustainable future. From climate adaptation to community development, women’s roles are not only vital but central to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he stated.

“We cannot achieve lasting environmental and economic stability unless we address the gender imbalances that still exist in many sectors, particularly in those related to climate action and green energy,” he said.

The Minister further said, WiSA’s vision to establish a Resource & Research Centre dedicated to tracking, reporting and promoting women’s contributions to sustainability could not be more timely or necessary.

Additionally, Ghana’s Minister for Labour, Hon. Rashid Pelpuo in his address said, the core of existence of any nation is the woman and the sustainability of the economy is as a result of the participation.

At all levels he had worked, he came to the realisation that to achieve success, you need both the male and female.

He, therefore, encouraged women to be conscious about the role they play in society, adding that where there is a difference and where women are disregarded, there would be a problem.

He announced that his Ministry is working to amend the current Labour law to recognise the position of women in the country’s workforce.

The flagbearer of Social Democratic Party of Nigeria, Adewole Adebayor called for a borderless Africa, where Africans can easily trade amongst themselves for economic development.

“Luckily for us, our cultural background and experiences under colonial power is the same, it is on the basis of this I will infuse Nigerian capital into WiSA. And if you’re sustainable and come with a sustainable plan we can start with a modest contribution to this programme. On that basis we can work with this programme which we can support with One Million dollars,” he concluded.

The CEO of Ghana’s Microfinance & Small Loans Center (MASLOC), in her pledged the Government of Ghana’s support to WiSA by supporting 16,000 sustainable women farmers in Ghana with loans and technical guidance to improve their trade and livelihoods.

The Programme organised by Women In Sustainability Africa (WiSA) was in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, and Ministry of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, MASLOC, the League of Extraordinary Women Network, The UN Global Compact and EIB Network, among others.

Manye Fi is quickly becoming one of Afrobeats’ most promising new voices

Rising Afrobeats singer Manye Fi Rising Afrobeats singer Manye Fi

Rising Afrobeats singer Manye Fi is making waves with the release of her debut EP, Manye Fi Rebirth, a five-track project led by the flirty, addictive single “Rema.”

Now available across all major streaming platforms, the EP is quickly gaining attention from fans looking for fresh sounds similar to global stars Tems, Tyla and Ayra Starr.

Originally released exclusively on Audiomack on May 2nd, Manye Fi Rebirth has already crossed 80,000 streams in its first week, and that’s with little to no heavy promotion.

Though “Rema” was the first to drop, it’s the third track, “Special” that has unexpectedly become the most streamed song on the EP.

Meanwhile, “Tatata” and “Man Down” which features TGMA 26 nominee Ayisi, are also building traction as listeners explore the full project.

Born to Ghanaian parents and raised between Germany and the UK, Manye Fi blends her European energy with her West African roots, bringing something unique to the Afrobeats genre.

For fans searching for new Afrobeats music, Manye Fi offers a fresh yet familiar vibe that connects instantly. Most tracks on the EP are in English, but Manye Fi weaves in Ga language moments, especially in the final track, “Nyash Commander”, giving global fans something new while shining a light on her heritage.

“I wanted each track to feel like crossing a bridge from where I started to where I’m headed,” she shared with GhanaNdwom. “Manye Fi Rebirth isn’t a rebrand; it’s a reminder that every day you wake up, you get to start over.”

Manye Fi’s debut EP takes listeners on an emotional journey through love, heartbreak, healing, and self-worth.

The opening track, Tatata, sets the tone with a story of an ex stirring up old feelings and confusion. She’s caught between the comfort of the familiar and the need to move forward.

In Man Down, the tone shifts. She’s done with the games. Her growth is loud and clear as she ignores his repeated calls and confidently declares him a chapter closed.

With Special, the mood softens. Here, she reflects on a time when she was broken, saved by someone who saw her value. But it’s the love she finds within herself that truly brings her peace.

I’m not a fashion icon, stop telling me how to dress – Afua Asantewaa slams critics

Two-time Guinness World Record contender, Afua Asantewaa, has fired back at critics who have consistently criticised her fashion choices.

In a video circulating on social media on May 8, 2025, Afua made it clear that she is not interested in meeting fashion expectations and urged Ghanaians to stop advising her on how to dress.

“How old are you, how much land do you have in your name? Do you even have a house? A car isn’t even a property because anything can happen to it. Even if your building gets burnt you can still renovate it.

“You do not have any project in your name and you are here talking about me. Please I am not a fashion icon. I am a broadcast journalist… If you don’t understand you can please go to the fashionista’s page and talk about your fashion,” she said.

Afua also credited actress Tracy Boakye for influencing her financial mindset, especially when it comes to prioritising real estate over luxury fashion.

“One key lesson I picked from watching Tracy Boakye’s interview was how people spend unnecessarily on fashion. I remember how people used to criticise her outfits. She once said, instead of wasting money to impress people online, invest it in building something for yourself,” she said.

She added, “Some people live in single rooms but buy expensive outfits just to impress others on social media. I have children to raise and projects to complete. When I’m done with all that, I can choose to be the most fashionable person on earth, and no one can stop me.”

Ghana now fighting mechanised industrialised galamsey

0

Prof Jasper Ayelazuno speaking to Ghanaweb in Tamale Prof Jasper Ayelazuno speaking to Ghanaweb in Tamale

The Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Prof Jasper Ayelazuno, has called for urgent action to address the galamsey menace in the country.

He said Ghana is no longer fighting illegal small-scale mining but well-organized, mechanized, industrialized galamsey.

Prof Jasper noted that merely describing the current state of illegal mining in the country as galamsey understates the intensity and levels of disruption of this current form of mining.

Explaining the differences between the two, the Political Scientist said that formerly, galamsey simply referred to artisanal small-scale mining where illegal miners used rudimentary tools such as pans, pick-axes, and shovels for mining.

This, he said, is different from the current form, where heavy machines such as excavators and chipping machines are used to cause massive disruptions within minutes of mining.

Speaking to GhanaWeb in Tamale on the sidelines of a public lecture on Ghana’s Extraction Industry on Thursday, Prof Ayelazuno stressed that the evolution of illegal mining from artisanal small-scale illegal mining to mechanised industrialised galamsey is the reason for the “uncontrollable disruption” the new form of galamsey is causing.

“It used to be artisanal small scale galamsey but now it is mechanized industrialised galamsey that is why we have the level of disruption that we have because with the artisanal mining galamsey, they use rudimentary tools but compare that to excavators, compare that to chanfans, compare that to all those very huge machines that are used for mining now, the disruption they can do within a minute, it used not to be so to do that kind of disruption with a pan or a pick-axe or a shovel,” he explained.

The Dean of Communication and Media Studies at the UDS added that galamsey in its earlier form, used to be a sustainable livelihood activity for rural people, just like farming.

“If you look at galamsey, it’s not what it used to be. It used to very sustainable livelihood activity of rural people, just like farming. Even when it was made illegal by the laws of Ghana, people were still mining, and they called it galamsey all the way till the 2000s,” he pointed out.

Prof Jasper blamed Ghana’s political class for facilitating their cronies, family members and sponsors to engage in this mechanized industrialized galamsey.

He opined that “After the 2000s, things changed, it’s not like galamsey just popped up from nowhere, it is something that evolved and the evolution from sustainable mining or galamsey to now uncontrollable disruption is as a result of the political class facilitating their cronies, facilitating their family members, facilitating their sponsors. You know, we’re in a democracy that is called monocracy, so they are now sponsoring them to get money from galamsey which they then use to invest in their campaign. So it is a political issue.”

Prof Jasper noted that although Ghana seem to have lost the fight against galamsey, it will have to take committed political leadership to address the menace.

The public lecture was organized by the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FCMS-UDS) in collaboration with Third World Network-Africa (TWN-Africa) as part of TWN-Africa’s 30th anniversary Campus Conversations public lecture series.

It was on the theme “Economic Transformation and Extractives: The Community and Women at the Centre of Ghana’s Transformation.”

Speaking at the opening of the public lecture, Pauline Vande-Pallen, Programme

Officer on Gender and Economic Policy and Extractives at TWN-Africa said the campus conversations are organized for students to understand developments in especially in the extractive industry.

She said the country’s mining industry was expanding very rapidly, and across the country, hence the need for students across the country to understand the issues to be able to shape the country and the world in the future.

AC Milan players to wear their mum’s names on kits for Mother’s Day tribute

Some players of AC Milan showing their mothers' names last season play videoSome players of AC Milan showing their mothers’ names last season

AC Milan will once again celebrate Mother’s Day in a deeply personal and symbolic way, as players from the men’s first team take to the pitch wearing their mothers’ maiden names on the backs of their jerseys, continuing a heartwarming tradition first introduced last season.

The initiative, which was a first in Italian football when launched in 2023, is being carried forward this weekend during Milan’s Serie A clash against Bologna on Friday, May 9, 2025.

The gesture is not only a tribute to motherhood, but also a broader celebration of personal identity and equality, inspired by an Italian law passed in 2022 that gives both parents equal rights to pass on their surnames to their children.

In last year’s edition, the Rossoneri marked the occasion in style with a 5-1 win over Cagliari, and the gesture captured widespread attention and praise across the football world. For 2024, the club is going even further.

This season’s celebration will see players’ maternal surnames not just on their jerseys, but also featured in the official lineup announcement, shown on the San Siro’s giant screens, and read aloud by the stadium announcer.

The club will also display Mother’s Day-themed graphics across its digital platforms and LED displays, including images of mothers shared by players, club legends, and fans globally.

Beyond the emotional symbolism, AC Milan is also using the occasion to make a tangible social impact. Through its charitable arm, Fondazione Milan, the club will support around 70 teenage mothers via a fundraising campaign.

The proceeds will go to a parenting support programme at the Spazio Indifesa Hub in Milan’s Gallaratese district.

Death sentences highlight killing of women for Nigeria

0

In di past week, two men don dey sentenced to death in Nigeria for di murder of women.

Di sentences, wey dey delivered by different judges, come three years afta both women dey killed.

One of dose wey dem give di death penalty na Peter Nwachukwu, di husband of late popular gospel singer Osinachi, wey court find guilty of im wife death following allegations of domestic violence.

Di oda na Andrew Ominikoron, one bus driver wey court find guilty of killing Bamise Ayanwola, a 22-year-old wey dey killed afta she bin take public bus.

Activists and families of dose wey dey killed say dem hope say dis sentences mark significant shift towards justice delivery for women wey men kill. But, dem say, many cases of femicide for Nigeria remain unresolved.

‘Pain wey I go carry to my grave’

Dis include di case of Onuwabuagbe Augusta Osedion, a 21-year-old undergraduate for Lead City University, Ibadan. Osedion na happy-go lucky young woman wit dreams of running her own clothing line.

But for July 2023, her bodi wey don dey decompose dey recovered from her boyfriend apartment for Lagos.

Augusta boyfriend, Benjamin Best Nnanyereugo, wey go by di nickname “Killaboi”, bin admit say e kill am for series of rants on im Instagram page.

“Di pain of my daughter death na pain wey I go carry to my grave,” her mother, Cordelia Okonye tok.

“She bin promise to make money and take care of me.”

Days afta e bin dey apprehended for Osedion killing, Nnanyereugo bin abscond from Nigerian police custody and run to Sierra Leone wia e bin remain free man until e dey rearrested on October 20, 2023, under di false identity, ‘Kanu Princeton Samuel’.

But e again bin escape custody during one prison break for Freetown on November 26, 2023. According to di Nigeria police, e bin travel through multiple regions including West Africa, East Asia and di Middle East, under forged identities bifor e eventually relocate to Doha, Qatar on January 24, 2025.

Dia, e bin live under di alias ‘Toure Abdoulaye’ wit forged Guinean passport bifor im arrest for February and den repatriation to Nigeria for April 2025 to stand trial.

But Augusta mama bin tell di BBC say im arrest no change anytin as far as she dey concerned, and no go eva give her any closure or relief of di pain wey her daughter death bring.

Femicide for Nigeria

For 2023, estimate of 85,000 women dey intentionally killed globally, according to di UN Women, one arm of di United Nations wey dey dedicated to gender equality and women empowerment. Dis translate to six women killed evri hour.

Out of dis number, Africa get di highest number of gender-related killings, wit 21,000 reported cases of femicide.

Most of dis women, 60%, dey killed by intimate partners or family members.

For Nigeria for 2024, 133 women and girls dey killed in gender-related violence, according to DOHS Cares Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation wey dey monitor reported cases of femicide. Many oda cases dey unreported.

Ajayi Ololade, a gender activist and founder of DOHS Care Foundation, say e appear say di incidents of femicide dey on di rise, wit 32 cases wey dey reported between January and March dis year.

One of dis na di case of 24-year-old youth corps member, Salome Adaidu, wey bin go viral for January 2025 afta her severed head dey found inside bag for Karu, few kilometres from Nigeria capital Abuja.

One gospel artiste, Timileyin Ajayi, dey apprehended for her killing. Police bin later find more dismembered remains for im home. E bin claim say Salome dey cheat on am.

Ajayi, wey currently dey stand trial for culpable homicide, don plead not guilty to di charge

“Any time we think of how my sister dey killed, e hurt a lot,” Salome sister, Patience Adaidu, bin tell BBC one day afta di first court hearing.

“Wit di help of God and evri one wey dey involved, we suppose dey able to get justice,” she tok.

Unlike Augusta and Salome wey appear to dey killed by dia intimate partner, anoda femicide victim, 22-year-old Bamise Ayanwole, dey killed by a stranger.

Ayanwola bin leave her workplace for Ajah, one Lagos suburb, on her way to her elder broda house for February 2022 but no reach her intended destination.

Her last communication na one voice note to a friend wey she bin send while she dey inside BRT, express concern over di behaviour of di bus driver.

Her body dey found nine days later.

Although dem find Andrew Ominikoron guilty of her murder and now don dey sentenced to death, di victim family don express di frustration wit di justice process.

Dem say dem believe say accomplices to di murder still dey on di run, and dey question why dem no make di results of some DNA tests public.

Ayanwola sister, Onaopemipo Damilola, don also criticise di court process say e dey slow.

“E don dey frustrating; e dey annoying, need to go (to court) evri time and no reasonable tin don dey done,” she bin tok for February.

“Most of di times, di defence counsel no gree show up wey don dey cause drag in di case.”

Justice wey dey difficult to find

No specific laws for di Nigerian Constitution to address cases of femicide. For di families of many victims, justice remain difficult to find.

“None of di victims of femicide cases wey DOHS Foundation dey involved in don get justice”, gender activist Ajayi Ololade tok – she cite prolonged litigation, suspects abscondment and inadequate sentencing as factors.

Families of femicide victims say dem dey often silenced by culture of victim blaming.

“Many pipo bin insult me say I refuse to train my daughter well, say na why ‘yahoo’ boy’ use am for ritual,” Onuwabuagbe Augusta Osedion mama tok.

Similar sentiments dey expressed on X wen di murder of Salome Adaidu bin go viral for January 2025.

Activists bin worry say victim blaming in gender-related killings dey discourage families to seek justice and enable culprits to avoid accountability for dia crimes.

“Instead of condemning di actual act of femicide, in most cases, di conversation online usually dey centred around wetin di victim dey wear or how di victim don provoke di perpetrators,” Ajayi Ololade tok.

Activists say many cases of femicide for Nigeria still dey unresolved.

“Killaboi”, bin admit say e kill im girlfriend for series of rants on im Instagram page

Security beefed up at Tema Municipal Assembly ahead of Ebi Bright’s confirmation

0

Security has been significantly heightened at the Tema Municipal Assembly as preparations are underway for the confirmation of the President’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

Adom News can report that officers from the Ghana Police Service, some fully armed, have been deployed to maintain law and order at the assembly premises.

The presence of security personnel has created a heavily monitored atmosphere aimed at ensuring a peaceful and orderly confirmation process.

They are also present to witness the confirmation of Ebi Bright, the President’s nominee for the position of MCE for the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.

Entry into the main chamber, where the confirmation is taking place, was strictly controlled, with tight security checks at the entrance.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Shai-Osudoku, led a delegation from the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council to oversee the confirmation process.

The heightened security measures reflect the significance of the event and the commitment to ensuring a smooth confirmation.

Amoakohene moves to ease tensions before MMDCE confirmations

0

TThe Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has dispatched a team to engage stakeholders in districts across the region ahead of the confirmation of President John Dramani Mahama’s nominees for Municipal and District Chief Executives.

The team is mandated to hold engagements with stakeholders in the various districts, including Assembly Members, to ensure the President’s nominees enjoy a smooth confirmation process.

The Asante Mampong Municipal and Atwima Mponua District Assemblies are yet to have their nominees announced following the release of the list for 41 other areas, including the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

The Minister met the appointees earlier this week and advised them to cease jubilations, instead urging them to build bridges with seemingly aggrieved individuals and focus on securing their confirmation.

He has also engaged with candidates who were unsuccessful in the nomination process, encouraging them to be patient and remain committed to the party’s cause.

There have been some fallouts among National Democratic Congress members in certain constituencies after the nominees’ list was released.

Dr. Amoakohene called on party members to support the nominees and assured them that no one would be left out.

“All the meetings we are having, the aggrieved candidates are all from the party, because it is opened to only party people. We have encouraged them that if it is a matter that you want to serve the government, or support the president, then there are other avenues to contribute that support to the president,” he stated.

Accra, May 9, GNA – When 14-year-old Aba returned to school after nearly dropping out due to financial hardship and domestic pressure, she was not sure she belonged. In response to the multifaceted needs of students – particularly as they mature and navigate cognitive, social, emotional and behavioural transitions – CAMFED launched the Learner Guide Programme to offer systematic and comprehensive mentoring support across Ghana.

Through its network of young women supported by CAMFED, known as the CAMFED Association (CAMA), the organisation identifies recent school graduates who are passionate about giving back to their communities. These CAMA members volunteer as Learner Guides in their local junior and senior high schools, offering guidance and mentorship while facilitating a peer-led, skills-based learning environment.

Pilot and Scale-Up
The Learner Guide Programme was first piloted with funding from the Queen’s Trust in 18 senior high schools across 11 districts: Gomoa West, Abura Asebu Kwamankese, Mfantseman, Tamale Metro, West Mamprusi, West Gonja, Bole, Chereponi, Yendi, Bongo and East Mamprusi. In this phase, 540 Learner Guides reached 21,683 students with weekly sessions designed to improve educational outcomes and support post-school transitions.

Since then, the programme has expanded to 847 schools across CAMFED’s 38 operational districts in the Northern, North-East, Savannah, Upper East, Upper West, Bono, Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Greater Accra and Central Regions. Under the programme, Learner Guides dedicate 12 to 18 months of voluntary service to conduct weekly sessions using the ‘My Better World’ (MBW) curriculum, a tailored resource that enhances learners’ aptitude for schooling, self-knowledge and future prospects.

Enhancing the Learning Environment
The MBW curriculum covers life skills, learner-centred approaches, leadership development, child protection and classroom management. Learner Guides are trained to deliver both group sessions and individual psychosocial support. Their responsibilities include coordinating study groups, reinforcing home-school links, and promoting child protection through active collaboration with school management, parents and local authorities.

The holistic support structure also involves trained Teacher Mentors- currently numbering 416 – who are embedded in schools to provide psychosocial and academic support and to reinforce the lessons of the MBW curriculum.

The Impact So Far
From 2024 to date, the programme has seen the recruitment and training of 2,229 Learner Guides and has reached 68,442 learners across Ghana. An estimated 35,000 girls have received direct mentorship, creating pathways to improved attendance, retention and academic progression.

For Learner Guides themselves, the programme offers significant personal and professional growth. It serves as a pathway to employment, formal teacher training, tertiary education, and enhanced leadership skills. Many Guides report improved confidence and agency over life decisions.

The schools involved have seen increased female representation, greater student engagement, and the introduction of dynamic, learner-centred classroom methods. On a systemic level, the initiative contributes to narrowing the gender gap in education and reshaping social norms around girls’ schooling.

Towards National Integration
In light of its alignment with Ghana’s Education Strategic Plan (2018–2030) and the new senior high school curriculum, CAMFED is working with key government institutions including the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, and the National Service Authority to integrate the Learner Guide Programme into national education systems.

Under CAMFED’s current strategic plan (2024–2029), this collaboration aims to make the benefits of the Learner Guide model accessible to all learners across the country. The integration will also support national and global education commitments, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 4, which calls for inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.

A Lifeline for Learners
For students like Aba, the presence of a Learner Guide like Mabel has made all the difference. It has transformed her experience of school from a place of uncertainty into a space of hope and belonging. In every MBW session, study group, and one-on-one conversation, the Learner Guide Programme is not just mentoring students – it is changing lives, one classroom at a time.

‘CJ Torkornoo is not coming back, it is a foregone conclusion’

Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato and Gertrude Torkornoo Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato and Gertrude Torkornoo

Policy analyst and Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has asserted that the exit of the suspended Chief Justice, Getrude Torkornoo, is inevitable, describing it as a foregone conclusion.

Speaking in an interview on TV3 and monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, May 9, 2025, Dr Zaato stated emphatically that there is no chance of her returning to office.

“It’s a forgone conclusion, it’s done; the Chief Justice is gone. There will be a new Chief Justice. Let me say by the end of the year, watching everything going on, this Chief Justice is gone – she’s out.

“She’s not going back to the office. Maybe she’s going just to pack her things if she didn’t pack all of them, but as the Chief Justice she is done; it’s finished,” he stated.

He alleged that some people in the NDC had been able to convince President Mahama to remove the Chief Justice.

“I am a political scientist, so, I observe, I watch, I analyse, I see these things. Every political party has what we call hawks and maybe doves and then you have those in the middle. The hawks want everything extreme.

“The doves are in the middle, I want to believe that in this debate on these particular issues, the hawks within the NDC and the government have won, and they’ve been able to convince the president. They’ve won because I don’t think that His Excellency the president will want a removal of a Chief Justice to be part of his record,” he stated.

He further explained that the suspension of the Chief Justice points to a deliberate measure to achieve a political agenda.

“Everything here; everything we are trying to see about going to court… that is politics in action right there (sic) because you are seeing the weaponisation of the legal process to achieve a political objective; that is what is happening,” he added.

Following the determination of a prima facie case in the three petitions asking for the removal from office of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended her and set up a five-member committee to inquire into the petitions.

In the interim, a Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has assumed the role as Acting Chief Justice.

His role as the Acting Chief Justice is in line with Article 144(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which stipulates that the most senior Justice on the Supreme Court will act as Chief Justice if the position of Chief Justice becomes vacant or the substantive Chief Justice is unable to perform his or her functions.

Actor Koo Ofori arrested for alleged $50k fraud

Ghanaian comic actor Koo Ofori whose real name is Samuel Seth Kwabena Kyere Karikari has been arrested by the Accra Central Police Command for allegedly defrauding a US-based Ghanaian of $50,000.

Police sources state that Koo-Fori received the sum from the California-based victim under the guise of a legitimate investment opportunity but failed to honour the agreement and went into hiding.

The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, reported the issue to authorities after unsuccessful attempts to recover the funds.

Investigations confirmed that Koo-Fori defaulted on repayment and ignored a summons to appear before the Dansoman District Court on April 17, 2025, leading to a bench warrant for his arrest.

Koo-Fori was apprehended and is currently in custody. His court appearance, initially set for May 9, 2025, was postponed due to the court not sitting, and the case is now scheduled for May 12, 2025. He will remain in custody until the next hearing.

Police have advised the public to exercise caution in financial dealings, particularly those involving large sums and informal agreements.

Shea processors call for ban on export of raw shea nuts in Ghana

Ghana Shea Cooperatives & Processors Network (GSCP-Net) has called on the government to ban the exportation of raw shea nuts in the country to save thousands of jobs at risk.

The network said in recent years, tonnes of raw shea nuts are exported out of the country, draining the true value of the product and denying many rural women the benefits.

A ban on shea nuts, according to them will not only save jobs but help to build the local shea industry to transform the lives of women and youth in the industry.

“The shea nut is more than a product. It is “women’s gold”, a lifeline for thousands of hardworking women across the north. And yet, year after year, we watch as raw shea nuts are exported in bulk, draining the true value and denying our people the benefits that should remain in Ghana.”

A petition presented to the Northern Regional Minister on Wednesday said the mass exportation of the nuts not only cause the country to lose income but also the opportunity to build the local industry and transform the lives of women and the youth working in the shea industry

“When raw nuts are shipped out, we lose jobs. We lose income. We lose the opportunity to build local industry and transform the lives of women and youth who work tirelessly in this sector,” it said.

“Local entrepreneurs have invested in modern shea processing plants. Women’s groups are ready to scale. The demand is there, the capacity is building – what we need now is policy,” the petition added.

Beyond the ban, the network also called on government to support local processors with access to affordable financing and invest in modern shea hubs across producing districts.

‘Most popular song’ award shouldn’t be based only on digital streams

Media personality, MC Portfolio Media personality, MC Portfolio

Media personality, MC Portfolio has stated that the ‘Most Popular Song’ category at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) should not be judged based only on digital streaming numbers.

Speaking during a discussion on JoyPrime TV, he said he is unhappy that Charterhouse relies on digital streaming platforms like YouTube and other streaming apps to decide how popular a song is.

He pointed out that this approach overlooks the real influence a song might have within communities, on the streets, and at social events.

“Ever since the advent of this whole digital platform, every conversation is around digital platforms without touching base with the statistics over there,” he said.

He referenced DJ Azonto’s hit song ‘Fa No Fom,’ which he believes was unfairly dismissed due to what was perceived as poor digital streaming performance.

“They have disqualified a song like Fa No Fom by DJ Azonto based on poor streaming, meanwhile popularity-wise you could see that the song touched base, that is what a white man called on-grounds effect,” he explained.

According to him, true popularity must also be measured by how well a song resonates with people in everyday spaces like public gatherings, what he calls the “on-grounds effect.”

“That is why I’m saying that when you are saying someone has a big song or a popular song, the metrics should not be centred around digital platforms. Because now every conversation is centred around, we had this number of views on YouTube, this number of views. Having gotten that, what is the on-grounds effect of the song?” he emphasised.

MC Portfolio’s argument centres on the idea that while digital streams are important, they do not tell the full story of a song’s reach.

There is reported heavy tensions at Bole District, in the Savannah Region, following the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Abdulai Mahamud as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area.

According to a report by adomonline.com, some youth in the municipality took to the streets on Friday, May 9, 2025, burning tyres in protest of the confirmation.

The angry youth, according to the report, stormed the premises of the Bole District Assembly and have since issued threats to attack the homes of prominent political figures in the area, including President John Dramani Mahama, and Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Sulemana Yusif.

The aggrieved youth, according to the report, are protesting the nomination and confirmation of Abdulai Mahamud on the basis that he is not well-known within the district and is being imposed on the community.

“Mahamud, before becoming MCE, was saying that it is high time the Mole people disassociate themselves from the Gonjas. Is this the kind of person who you want to become MCE?” the report quoted an aggrieved youth, Saaka Shaibu, as saying.

Meanwhile, there has been a deployment of heavy security to the Bole area in response to the threats issued by the raging youth.

Abdulai Mahamud was nominated by President Mahama as the MCE for Bole District, one of the seven administrative assemblies in the Savannah Region.

The nomination, announced in early May 2025, was part of the president’s appointment of new MMDCEs to implement the development agenda of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the government at the local levels.

Bole District is a stronghold of the NDC and the home constituency of President Mahama.

Global refiners defy oil price slump with strong Q1 profits

0

Global refiners records strong earnings in Q1 of 2025 Global refiners records strong earnings in Q1 of 2025

Global oil refiners have delivered stronger-than-expected earnings in the first quarter of 2025, thanks to a sharp rebound in refining margins, even as crude prices falter and concerns over weakening global oil demand grow.

According to a report by Reuters, as sighted by GhanaWeb Business, refiners processing Mars crude on the U.S. Gulf Coast saw margins double to around $16 per barrel.

In Asia, margins for Arab Light crude jumped 36%, while in Singapore, refiners enjoyed margins of about $7 per barrel on Dubai crude.

These improved crack spreads, driven by relatively cheap crude and steady demand for gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, are helping refiners maintain profitability despite a soft upstream environment.

The report further noted that first-quarter refining margins have outpaced 2024 levels, offering a bright spot for the downstream sector even as upstream players face mounting pressure.

The earnings season, however, has been a mixed bag. Marathon Petroleum posted a quarterly loss, citing weaker margins, seasonal maintenance, and unplanned downtime.

On the other hand, Chevron’s refining segment outperformed, offsetting soft crude prices and helping the company meet analyst expectations.

Despite these setbacks, the broader message from Q1 is clear; the refining sector remains resilient.

As long as margins remain elevated and crude stays cheap, pure-play refiners may continue to offer strong returns for investors.

Michael Amer featured in Ghana's win over CAR in the U-20 AFCON Michael Amer featured in Ghana’s win over CAR in the U-20 AFCON

Michael Amer, the son of business mogul Ibrahim Mahama, made his first appearance for the Black Satellites in their 1-0 win over the Central African Republic (CAR) in the U-20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) on May 8, 2025.

The left-footed attacker was introduced into the game in the 91st minute, replacing midfielder Abdul Aziz Issah, who had been instrumental in the game and was adjudged man of the match.

He made a few touches of the ball and had a brief, composed cameo, but couldn’t make much impact due to the limited time.

Amer, who wears the number 2 jersey, was left out of the squad for the first game against the Democratic Republic of Congo and was an unused substitute in the second match against Senegal.

The player, who is with the Nice Ibrahim Sports Academy, is expected to improve his performances to impress coach Desmond Offei and gain a more prominent role in the team.

The Black Satellites have qualified for the quarter-finals of the U-20 AFCON, which is ongoing in Egypt, after accumulating seven points in three games.

They drew 1-1 against DR Congo, beat Senegal 1-0, and defeated CAR in the last game with the same scoreline.

In-camera hearing of Chief Justice petitions undermines human rights – Prof. Mike Ocquaye

0

Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, has voiced strong opposition to the decision to hold an in-camera hearing on the petitions filed against suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The Chief Justice was suspended following the establishment of a prima facie case by President John Mahama, in consultation with the Council of State, in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution.

Loss-Making SOEs To Shut Down Or Merge – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama

President John Mahama has declared that struggling State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) will either be merged, put on listings, or shutdown to end what he calls “economic dead weight.”

Giving an account of his first 120 days in office to Ghanaians on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, President Mahama said government-owned entities must contribute value, not losses.

He added that the closure or merger is part of a comprehensive “deep-dive study” which is already underway to investigate the causes of underperformance.

“This may involve shutting down some or merging others,” he said.

The President disclosed that on March 13, 2025, he held a high-level meeting with CEOs under the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) to stress the urgency of reform.

“We promised to shake up and realign state-owned enterprises to enhance their profitability and value,” he reminded the nation.

President Mahama said his administration has begun rolling out an enhanced Performance Management System with “clear targets” to closely track financial and operational performance while promoting good governance across the sector.

“We are implementing an enhanced performance management system… and promoting good governance,” he explained.

The President also hinted at bold market-oriented moves, including potential listings on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

“SIGA is facilitating discussions with the Ghana Stock Exchange about potential listings of at least ten SOEs,” he revealed.

He also confirmed talks are ongoing to revive the once-thriving Produce Buying Company.

Mahama stressed that the era of politically shielded inefficiency must end.

“SOEs must prioritise dividend payment as their primary objective this year,” he declared.

The sweeping reforms are part of Mahama’s wider effort to restore fiscal discipline and rebuild public confidence in the management of national assets.

“We are no longer going to tolerate state agencies that exist just to consume,” he said.

Recent cedi gains are sustainable, not temporary — Finance Minister assures

2 minutes read

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has assured the public that the recent appreciation of the cedi is not a short-term event but the result of deliberate and strategic economic governance.

Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the Food and Beverage Association of Ghana (FABAG), Dr Forson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining currency stability.

“I want to use this opportunity to assure all of you that what you are seeing — the appreciation of the cedi — will not only continue but will be sustained,” he said.

He explained that the strengthening of the cedi is due to prudent economic planning and timely interventions, and not by chance.

“The stability and appreciation you are witnessing is not a knee-jerk reaction; it is the product of careful, well-thought-out planning,” he emphasised.

The Ghanaian cedi has seen notable gains in recent weeks, appreciating significantly against major foreign currencies. The interbank rate currently stands at around GH¢13.29 to the US dollar — a marked improvement from levels above GH¢16 earlier this year.

Dr Forson reminded stakeholders that stabilising the local currency, reducing inflation, and creating jobs were among his top priorities upon assuming office. He reiterated the government’s commitment to delivering on these objectives.

“This is not a nine-day wonder. There will be stability, the cedi will be stronger, and we expect you to support these efforts so that Ghanaians can feel the impact,” he added.

Israeli Embassy celebrates 77th independence anniversary in Ghana

Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Liberia and Sierraleone, Mr. Roey Gilad,( left) and Minister of Works and Housing, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei propose the toast Photo: David Andoh

The Israeli Embassy in Ghana, on Tuesday, organised a reception to mark the Jewish state’s 77th Independence anniversary at the plush Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

The colourful event, which was under the theme “Bridges of Hope”, saw many invited guests dressed in Israeli blue and white national colours.

In attendance were members of the diplomatic corps, traditional rulers, representatives of the Jewish community in Ghana, the clergy and government officials.

After proposing the toast, the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Mr Roey Gilad, together with his wife Nitza and a number of Israeli nationals, took the floor to perform a Jewish dance, which some dignitaries, including the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, joined.

Some of the key personalities at the event were the Archbishop of the Action Chapel, Bishop Duncan Williams, and his wife, Rosa, a former trade negotiator and first Assistant US Trade Representative for Africa; Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin; and business executive and reverend minister, Dr Joyce Aryee.

The night, which featured the Yogev Shitrit Jazz Trio led by the renowned Israeli musician, Yogev Shitrit, entertained the guests with lovely Israeli tunes.

The Ghana Dance Ensemble put up a thrilling performance that showcased Ghana’s cultural heritage, while the Revival Restoration Centre Assemblies of God Choir provided some choral music.

In his speech, Mr Roey Gilad said that the bilateral relations between Ghana and Israel started two years before Ghana gained its independence.

He explained that Ghana was the first African country that his country chose to establish an embassy, and that shows how far the cooperation between the two has grown.

He pointed out that it has come with its peculiar challenges, citing the geographic distance between the two states and the need for two flights to commute between them as a major challenge confronting the two nations.

“The financial crises that Ghana went through in 2022 and the war we are going through in Israel for the last year and a half that changed our order of priorities and consumed much of our resources,” he added.

Ambassador Roey Gilad, however, stated that, facing those challenges and others, the Israeli-Ghanaian partnership has been strengthened in areas such as agriculture, cybersecurity, high-tech, and defence, among other elements of the cooperation.

Concerning education, Mr Royed Gilad said that this year, for the first time, an Israeli professor will conduct a special seminar about “Current Israel” in one of the universities in Ghana.

He noted that there were dozens of Ghanaian soccer players, both men and women, playing in Israel.

He further disclosed that recently, the Ghana under-15 soccer team participated in a friendly tournament in Israel and won first place.

“Now, it is our mission, together with the Ghana Football Association, to bring the national team, the Black Stars, to Israel,” said Roed Gilad.

Touching on the unprecedented Hamas attack on his country, which claimed the lives of 1200 citizens, the Ambassador said out of the 251 captives, 59 are still held in Gaza after 578 days.

According to him, two of those victims are associated with the Israeli community in Ghana.

Speaking on behalf of the government of Ghana, the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, congratulated the people of Israel on their 77th anniversary.

He said Israeli investments and expertise continue to make meaningful contributions to national development, adding that Israeli companies are actively doing business in Ghana, bringing innovation, creating jobs and helping build capacity across the critical sectors of the Ghanaian economy.

Mr Adjei commended the Israeli government for its initiatives, such as the Ghana-Israel Agribusiness Innovation Centre and training programmes offered by Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation.

He was grateful that several Ghanaians have received vital skills and knowledge that continue to yield significant benefits.

He emphasised that these areas of collaboration reflect the common goals and strength of the bilateral ties between the two countries.

“As we mark this important day in Israel’s history, we celebrate not only the achievements of the Israeli people but also the strong bonds of friendship that unite our two countries,” Mr Adjei remarked.
