Uterine fibroids can lead to heart or kidney failure

A gynaecologist at Medifem Specialist Hospital and Fertility Centre, Dr Ernest Saka, has cautioned that while uterine fibroids themselves may not be fatal, the complications they cause can lead to life-threatening conditions such as anaemia, heart failure, and kidney damage.

Speaking to GhanaWeb TV’s Stella Dziedzorm Sogli on Health Focus, he explained that uterine fibroids, depending on their size and location, can exert pressure on other organs.

“If they grow on the sides, they can obstruct the tubes. You get hydronephrosis and back pressure into the kidneys, they can destroy your kidneys,” he said.

“The fibroid won’t kill you. It’s the side effects that will. If you’re losing more blood than your body can produce, over time your blood levels will keep dropping. It becomes anaemia. Anaemia can lead to all kinds of failures, heart failure, strokes, kidney failure, liver failure, all sorts of organ failures,” he added.

Dr Saka further explained that fibroids are categorised based on how they grow.

“The main thing is the growth of the womb muscle. As it grows, it can either stay in the muscle, we call that intramural or grow into the cavity and become submucous. It can also grow outward, staying on the surface, which we call subserous,” he noted.

According to him, sub-serous fibroids usually cause fewer problems, “unless they become pedunculated, develop a stalk, and twist on themselves.”

He also noted that the size of fibroids can sometimes make them detectable by touch.

“Most of the time, it’s quite large. You’re not supposed to be able to feel your womb. So, any time you can feel your womb, it means it’s bigger than the size of a three-month pregnancy,” he explained.

Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Parliament of Ghana has suspended consideration of the Ghana Scholarships Authority Bill, 2025, to allow for further consultations with stakeholders.

The decision was on the request of the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during parliamentary proceedings on Thursday, July 17, 2025.

The minister informed the House that the suspension was necessary to address concerns raised by the Coalition of Civil Society Groups in Education.

“Mr Speaker, as I indicated earlier, the Office of the President related to me some concerns that have been communicated, and therefore Mr Speaker, I sought the chairman’s indulgence if we can stay further consideration as I do the consultation. As I indicated, on Tuesday we will engage the Coalition of Civil Society Groups in Education,” the minister said.

The consultation, according to the minister, is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, 2025, to ensure stakeholder input is incorporated before the bill progresses.

The Ghana Scholarships Authority Bill, laid before Parliament on July 8, 2025, aims to reform the country’s scholarship system by elevating the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat into a full-fledged authority.

The proposed legislation seeks to eliminate nepotism and cronyism in scholarship awards, ensuring allocations are based on merit and need, particularly in critical disciplines like science, mathematics, and education.

It includes provisions to end government-funded foreign scholarships for courses offered in Ghanaian universities, aiming to strengthen local institutions and promote fairness.

However, civil society groups, including Africa Education Watch, have raised concerns about the bill’s governance structure, arguing that it grants excessive executive control, which could undermine transparency efforts.

A premium ultra-center for licensing and vehicle registration, offering expedited services, has officially opened.

Located in a prime area at Ring Road West in Accra, the centre, established through a partnership between the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and VFS Global, aims to provide a comfortable, efficient, and convenient environment for applicants seeking DVLA services.

Speaking during a media tour at the DVLA office in Accra on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Foster Akwasi Asante, praised the state-of-the-art nature of the facility.

According to him, the ultra-center forms part of the Authority’s policy to collaborate with private businesses to improve service delivery and make these services more accessible to Ghanaians.

“The state of art is top-notch. I just informed the manager here that this is my first time, but it appears this is one of a kind. I’m really impressed. I’m amazed at how much it works. The ultra centers, as a policy, are getting the private partners to partner with governments in providing services to the masses, that is, our cherished customers,” he said.

He continued, “DVLA alone cannot take on this mandate because the workload will definitely overwhelm us. We are happy to have such partners, and I’m very glad to be here today to see what VFS is doing. DVLA, our mandate is to serve, and we are expected to bring our services to the doorsteps of our cherished customers. Bringing the services closer to the doorsteps of our cherished customers does not only show up the revenue of the states, but give out the service in the convenience of our cherished customers.”

Also speaking during the tour, Alok Singhal, Head of Sub-Saharan Africa for VFS Global, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership and what they have been able to achieve with the premium center.

Singhal highlighted how such partnerships could improve service delivery in the public sector, calling for more such initiatives to strengthen public services across the country.

“This is something that we have been planning for last several months and I’m really, really happy that we have been able to finally achieve because we wanted to showcase the kind of partnership that we have with DVLA in order to provide convenient access to the Ghanian citizens who wish to apply basically for their driving license as well as for vehicle registration.

“This facility is definitely a testament of how public services can be improved through a very strong public-private partnership, wherein we meet all the compliance requirements that are required by the authorities, but at the same time provide a world-class, excellent service to the Ghanian citizens,” he said.

He commended the premium center for its advanced digitalization and the technology adopted in its operations, which ensures speedy and efficient service delivery for the general public.

Additional services that Ghanaians can get are driver’s license renewal, replacement of licenses, amendment of records, missing license, international driving permit, foreign license conversion, vehicle registration, and International Vehicle Permit.

A year on, CAF yet to pay Kobby Spiky in his fight for creative justice

0

Kobby Spiky Nkrumah – IT Specialist

It’s been more than a year since Ghanaian music producer Kobby Spiky Nkrumah secured a landmark victory against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in the High Court in Accra. On July 17, 2024, the court ruled that CAF had illegally used Spiky’s original track, , in promotional materials for the 2018 CAF Awards without his permission—a clear violation of his copyright.

The court awarded Spiky $250,000 in damages, a judgment firmly rooted in Ghana’s Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690), which stipulates financial penalties for the unauthorised use of copyrighted material. This wasn’t just a win for Spiky; it was a beacon of hope for creative professionals across Africa who frequently face the uphill battle of protecting their intellectual property.

Upholding the Law, Denying Delay Tactics

Despite the clear ruling, and even after CAF’s subsequent appeal was dismissed, the damages remain unpaid.

CAF’s legal team attempted to secure a stay of execution, aiming to delay payment while they pursued further appeals. Their arguments centred on the definition of “commercial use,” questioning whether using copyrighted music to promote an event constituted commercialisation. They even drew a comparison to a judicial association using background music for a TV announcement—a comparison many found unconvincing, given the significant commercial scale of the CAF Awards.

However, Justice Emmanuel Logoh saw through the distinction. After reviewing the legal submissions and affidavits, he stated:

“I have heard the legal submissions by both lawyers and also had regard to the depositions contained in the affidavit filed by the parties. Application accordingly refused.”

Spiky’s legal counsel, Onyinye-Chukwu Marymagdalene Okeyea, robustly defended the initial ruling, citing various sections of Ghana’s copyright law to demonstrate the undeniable infringement by CAF. She also pointed out that even CAF had introduced its own internal statutes as evidence, affirming the court’s prerogative to consider them.

More Than Money: A Matter of Principle

This case has gone beyond legal boundaries—it has become a crucial test of how seriously we, as a continent, uphold the rights of creators. Many African artists and producers struggle immensely to safeguard their intellectual property. Spiky isn’t a large corporation with endless resources; he’s an individual who placed his trust in the legal system, followed due process, and emerged victorious. What now hangs in the balance is the principle of honouring that judicial decision.

While there’s been no explicit refusal from CAF to fulfil its obligation, the ongoing delays send a disheartening message to aspiring young creatives: that even a court victory can lead to prolonged injustice.

A Call for Finality and Accountability

This isn’t about fostering animosity or assigning blame. It’s about achieving closure. Spiky has sought nothing more than what the law entitles him to. He adhered to the rules, presented his case, and won fairly. The judicial process has spoken not just once, but twice, with both the initial ruling and the dismissal of the stay of execution affirming his rights.

What’s left is a straightforward act of accountability: for CAF to honour the court’s decision and disburse the awarded damages.

This case has evolved into a powerful symbol—a symbol of hope, resilience, and the potential for creators to defend their rights. Yet symbols only carry weight when accompanied by action. It’s time to bring this chapter to a just and definitive close.

Justice delayed should not, and cannot, be justice denied.

Stunning Lace Outfit Styles for Every Lady

Lace has long been associated with elegance, sophistication, and femininity. Whether it’s a formal gathering, traditional ceremony, or a classy evening out, lace outfits always make a graceful fashion statement. The versatility of lace makes it a top choice for women who want to exude beauty, grace, and class.

One of the most popular lace outfit styles is the lace gown. From full-length evening dresses to midi gowns with slit detailing, lace adds texture and charm to any design. It’s perfect for weddings, engagement parties, and church services. Colored lace — especially white, burgundy, navy blue, and emerald green — brings out a regal and polished look.

For traditional settings, lace Kaba and slit styles have gained popularity. Often paired with headwraps or gele, these outfits are both cultural and fashionable. Designers also add layers, pleats, or flared sleeves to give the traditional look a modern edge.

Lace tops paired with skirts or trousers are another trendy option. A lace blouse, whether peplum or off-shoulder, matched with a pencil skirt or wide-leg pants, can be styled for office wear or a dinner date. You can also opt for lace jumpsuits for a bold and stylish approach — they’re chic, modern, and flattering.

Layered lace outfits, where lace is combined with satin, tulle, or crepe, also offer a luxurious look for high-end occasions. Beaded or sequined lace brings in extra sparkle and is a favorite for bridal wear and evening gowns.

In every cut and color, lace offers timeless beauty. Whether you prefer something modest or daring, there’s a lace style to suit every woman’s taste and event. With the right accessories and confidence, lace outfits are always a winning choice.

Ghanaian chart-topper, Black Sherif, has made history by becoming the most exported Ghanaian artiste for the first half of 2025.

According to a list released by Spotify, 13 out of 15 tracks from his sophomore album, “Iron Boy,” made it to Spotify’s Global Impact list of most exported Ghanaian songs for the first half of 2025, claiming 15 of the top 19 spots.

This marks an exceptional breakthrough, especially as “Iron Boy” becomes the first Ghanaian album to spend two weeks in the Apple Music Top 50 in the USA and debut at no 7 on Spotify’s Global Album Debut Charts.

The record-setting release also crossed 60 million Spotify streams and secured #10 on Billboard’s US World Albums chart.

Since 2022, Black Sherif has been the most streamed Ghanaian artiste on Spotify after the release of his debut album, “The Villain I Never Was” which was released in October 2022.

The album itself achieved respectable success, debuting at #12 on Billboard’s World Albums and scoring a #1 hit in Nigeria with “Kwaku the Traveller”.

However, “Iron Boy” has far outpaced its predecessor in both streaming volume and global penetration, solidifying Black Sherif as one of the most formidable artistes in the country.

Parliament considers Bill to establish Ghana Scholarships Authority

0

Ghana’s Parliament is currently reviewing the Ghana Scholarships Authority Bill, 2025—an important initiative aimed at reforming how government scholarships are administered and awarded nationwide.

Now under discussion during the second meeting of the first session of the Ninth Parliament, the Bill seeks to address persistent challenges in scholarship management while promoting transparency, fairness, and equitable access to educational support.

The Bill was officially introduced to Parliament by the Honourable Minister for Education, Mr Haruna Iddrissu, on July 9, 2025.

Related Article: Scholarship scheme overhauled – New bill to go before Parliament soon

Following its presentation, it was referred to the Joint Committee on Education and Public Administration and State Interest for detailed review and recommendations.

The core objective of the Bill is to establish the Ghana Scholarships Authority—a dedicated body responsible for overseeing the administration, allocation, and management of government scholarships.

The Bill contains 34 clauses, covering everything from the Authority’s establishment, its functions, governance structure, and funding arrangements, to eligibility criteria, application procedures, and conditions for scholarship awards.

Key provisions under consideration include the decentralisation of scholarship awards to ensure wider access across regions, prioritisation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programmes to foster national development, and the introduction of a transparent, merit-based selection process.

The Bill also emphasises the need to prevent abuse of the system, including measures for the repayment of scholarships by beneficiaries who study abroad and fail to return or serve the country afterwards.

Funding remains a crucial aspect of the Bill. The proposed legislation recommends that the Authority’s funds could be supplemented by up to two percent of the country’s oil revenue and a percentage of disbursements from the Ghana Education Trust Fund and the Student Loan Trust Fund, ensuring sustainable financing.

The Committee also discussed the importance of establishing a comprehensive database of scholarship beneficiaries to prevent duplication and improve transparency. Additionally, amendments have been proposed to enhance the clarity and effectiveness of some clauses, including criteria for scholarship eligibility, application assessment, and disciplinary measures for non-compliance.

While the Bill is still under review, the Joint Committee has expressed a positive outlook, noting that the proposed legislation aligns with national development goals and addresses past issues of patronage, corruption, and nepotism in scholarship awards.

The Committee unanimously recommended that the House adopt the report and pass the Bill, paving the way for a more transparent and equitable scholarship system in Ghana.

During the second reading of the Ghana Scholarships Authority Bill, 2025, the Education Minister called on Parliament to support the legislation aimed at overhauling the country’s scholarship system.

In his address, Mr Iddrisu emphasised the need for a robust legal framework to regulate scholarship awards, which he said would help eliminate issues of political patronage, corruption, nepotism, and cronyism that have plagued the current system.

“Support this Bill to provide the regulatory oversight needed to ensure deserving students benefit from our scholarship programs and to restore confidence in our national education system,” he appealed.

He highlighted that the Bill seeks to elevate the Scholarship Secretariat into a formal authority responsible for ensuring transparent and merit-based scholarship awards, including skills upgrading programs across Ghana.

Furthermore, the Minister announced the introduction of the President’s Scholarship for Excellence, which will recognise the top 10 students in West Africa based on results from the West African Senior Certificate Examination, ensuring meritocracy in awarding national honours.

He also highlighted ongoing challenges, noting that many Ghanaian students studying abroad have been sent home due to unpaid scholarships, underscoring the urgency of passing this legislation.

“This is more than a reward, it’s an investment in the future of African football. Through meaningful opportunities like this, we are giving our youth a global stage, encouraging ambition, and cultivating cross-cultural understanding that goes far beyond the game,” said CAF General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba.

Barcelona talks with DR Congo leaked ahead of new sponsorship deal

Barcelona look to become the latest football club to link up with tourism boards in central Africa Barcelona look to become the latest football club to link up with tourism boards in central Africa

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) has agreed to pay more than $46.37m in a sponsorship deal with Spanish football club Barcelona that would see a logo promoting tourism appear on some team apparel, according to a contract seen by Reuters.

The contract with Barcelona, seen on Thursday by the news agency, is dated June 29 and stipulates that a logo branding the war-hit Central African country as the “heart of Africa” will appear on the backs of training and warm-up jerseys for the men’s and women’s teams.

The logo will also appear in advertising for the club and in the club magazine and annual report, the contract says.

DR Congo will pay the club between $11.6m and $13.3m annually over the next four seasons, it says.

Details of the deal between DR Congo and Barcelona have not been announced.

AS Monaco and AC Milan last month also announced sponsorship deals with DR Congo without disclosing the amounts.

DR Congo’s Sports Minister Didier Budimbu told Reuters the contract with AS Monaco is worth $1.85m per season. He did not disclose the amounts for the contracts with AC Milan or Barcelona.

A government source said the contract with AC Milan was worth $16.2m per season.

DR Congo’s Ministry of Tourism did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday, while Barcelona told Reuters they had no comment at this time.

In February, DR Congo’s Foreign Minister Therese Kayikwamba Wagner urged football clubs Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain to end their “blood-stained” sponsorship agreements with “Visit Rwanda”.

The appeal came less than a week after M23 rebels seized eastern DR Congo’s biggest city, Goma, as part of a lightning advance.

Rwanda denies backing M23, saying it is defending itself.

A report by a group of United Nations experts obtained by Reuters this month said Kigali exercised command and control over the rebels during their advance, gaining political influence and access to mineral-rich territory.

‘We’re treated like royalty abroad, unlike in Ghana’ – Alabaster Box laments

0

Celebrated gospel acappella quartet, Alabaster Box, has opened up about the differences in how they are received at home versus abroad.

In an interview on Showbiz 360 on TV3, group members lamented that despite being widely respected within church circles and the acappella fraternity, they remain largely sidelined in the mainstream gospel music industry.

“We’ve been to big churches in the country, and we were not even given places to sit. Even after introducing ourselves, we are made to stand in one corner until it’s time for us to minister.

“Even on the artwork for certain shows, we are the ‘others.’ After the pictures of headline artistes are placed on the artwork, the slot they write ‘and many others,’ that is what is reserved for us,” they narrated.

In contrast, their experiences on international stages have been interestingly different, as they are treated like ‘royals.’

“The first time we went to London, I wept,” one of them said.

“We were treated like royalty, we were serviced properly, and even put in the same waiting room with the other dignitaries like TD Jakes.

“We never experienced anything like that in Ghana. We would never find ourselves in the same room as major pastors,” they added.

They drew attention to the underlying bias, stating, “Africans are like that; we tend to discriminate. They would never mix us despite the fact that we are all ministers.”

Nevertheless, the gospel group stresses that they refuse to be offended, choosing instead to remain steadfast in their calling and ministry.

Mahama Pledges Six Stadia For Newly Created Regions

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct six modern sports stadia in Ghana’s newly created regions, as part of efforts to promote sports development and equitable infrastructure across the country.

Speaking during a stop in the Western North Region on his “Thank You Tour,” Mahama disclosed that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is spearheading the planning and design phase of the project.

“Under the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, modern sports stadia will be built in the six newly created regions, as well as in other regions that currently lack such infrastructure,” he told a gathering of traditional leaders and residents.

The initiative aims to address longstanding disparities in access to quality sporting facilities, especially in under-resourced areas. By expanding infrastructure, the plan seeks to nurture talent and create more opportunities for youth participation in sports.

The six beneficiary regions — Western North, Oti, North East, Bono East, Savannah, and Ahafo — were established following a 2018 national referendum, increasing Ghana’s administrative regions from ten to sixteen. The creation of these regions was intended to enhance local governance and spur development at the grassroots level.

Jealous people are not responsible for the end of our relationship. Linc and I are - Yinka Theisen writes

Yinka Theisen, the ex-lover of Linc Edochie, has dismissed claims that her relationship with the son of the legendary actor, Pete Edochie, crashed because he brought it on social media.

In a post she shared on her Facebook page this morning, Yinka argued that jealous people are not responsible for the end of our relationship but the couple involved.  She said people should dismiss the negative superstition that relationships run into troubled waters when brought to the public.

Her post reads

‘’I just read a post by someone who happened to have been a Facebook connection for awhile. I have removed the individual. He wrote about me & that my relationship ended because I shared my engagement & supposedly I was told not to share it.

First of all you folks need to stop this silly superstition about people destroying relationships when it is made public. When two people are in a committed relationship, the only people that can destroy it are those two and what they allow. I would never announce an engagement without the consent of the other person. That makes absolutely no sense. Also if you are filing immigration papers, you have to announce it on social media.

Linc and I were well aware of that and chose to do that.  Linc was the first person that posted pictures of us & he asked for my permission. It was my birthday this year and he wanted to announce it. A group called May Nation has continued to distort this. No group of people are responsible for the end of the relationship.

There were obvious cracks that I chose not to mention. It was not the first time we had issues. Jealous people are not responsible for the end of our relationship. Linc and I are. Also I believe what is meant for me can never be taken away from me. If a relationship ends, no matter how sad it is, it was meant to end. Some Nigerians have such warped way of thinking.

I don’t regret celebrating my relationship on social media. It was a beautiful one while it lasted. I chose to remember the fond moments rather than dwelling on negativity. He is a good man with lots of admirable qualities. That is how I chose to remember him & not some negative things that occurred at the end. ‘’

Ghanaian hiplife artist and rapper, Elias Ewusi Essel, popularly known as Donzy, has opened up about the challenges of working with fellow musicians in Ghana.

Speaking in a recent interview with Hitz FM, Donzy shared insights into his strong relationship with Highlife artist Kofi Kinaata.

“Collaborating with Ghanaian musicians is very difficult, but Kofi Kinaata makes it easy,” he stated.

The “Club” hitmaker explained that many popular Ghanaian musicians often make collaborations stressful, which discourages other artists from reaching out.

However, he praised Kofi Kinaata for being approachable and easy to work with, highlighting the strong bond they’ve built over time.

“The way I speak to Kofi Kinaata to promote our songs on his socials is not the same with other artists,” he added.

Donzy emphasised that he feels comfortable personally calling Kofi Kinaata to promote their work, something he says he cannot do with most other artists.

He concluded by naming a few other Ghanaian musicians he shares a genuine bond with and enjoys working with, including Sarkodie, Fameye, and Keche, among others.

Minority walks out of Parliament over ‘dispute’ on Ernest Kumi death announcement

The Minority caucus addressing the press The Minority caucus addressing the press

The Minority in Parliament staged a walkout on Thursday, July 17, 2025, following criticism from Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga over the manner in which Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin announced the death of former MP Ernest Yaw Kumi in the absence of Speaker Alban Bagbin.

Ayariga took issue with Afenyo-Markin’s decision to communicate the MP’s passing without the Speaker present, describing it as a breach of parliamentary protocol and constitutional procedure.

He argued that it is the Speaker’s responsibility to formally notify the House of a vacancy, not the Minority Leader.

“Are we to treat the communication from the leader of the minority caucus in this House, that our colleague belonging to his side is no more, as a communication that the seat has become vacant? Because vacancy occurs when the person passes, and there’s no doubt about the passing. This House, ordinarily, has never in the past discussed the matter until there was an official communication by the Speaker,” Ayariga stated.

However, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin justified his action, insisting that “he issued a clear caveat.”

The tense exchange prompted the Minority to exit the chamber in protest, further deepening tensions within the House.

Addressing the press afterward, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe described the Majority Leader’s remarks as “insensitive.”

Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Suhum, passed away on July 7, 2025.

His death came just months after a lengthy legal battle regarding his eligibility to serve as MP. In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court convicted him of contempt for defying an injunction that barred his swearing-in. A bench warrant was subsequently issued after he failed to appear for sentencing.

Weija-Gbawe MP Demands Answers On Hajj Deaths

0

Jerry Ahmed Shaib

Tensions flared in Parliament on Tuesday as Members of Parliament (MPs) pressed the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, for answers over the circumstances surrounding the deaths of seven Ghanaian pilgrims during the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage.

Raising the issue during parliamentary proceedings, Weija-Gbawe MP, Jerry Ahmed Shaib requested a detailed report from the minister regarding what led to the fatalities and what steps were being taken to support bereaved families and prevent such tragedies in future pilgrimages.

“I rise to ask the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to provide a detailed report on the circumstances surrounding the death of seven Ghanaian pilgrims during the 2025 Hajj, including the specific measures implemented to ensure pilgrim safety and prevent future occurrences,” Ahmed Shaib submitted.

However, in response, Minister Ahmed Ibrahim said he was unable to provide comprehensive answers because the 2025 Hajj operations were overseen by a special presidential committee chaired by MP for Asutifi South, Alhaji Collins Dauda.

According to him, the committee had full responsibility for planning, coordination, and execution of the pilgrimage, and had not yet submitted its final report to the relevant authorities.

“Mister Speaker, the Hajj Committee was constituted under the Office of the President, and per the terms of reference, they were to plan, coordinate, execute, manage, and report on all matters relating to the 2025 Hajj,” the minister stated, adding, “As such, it is not directly under my purview, and I am unable to respond adequately to the question at this time.”

His response drew immediate concerns from MPs, who insisted the minister could not absolve himself of responsibility simply because the Hajj Committee had yet to report.

Returning to the floor, Jerry Ahmed Shaib pressed further, asking whether the ministry had held any discussions at all concerning the deaths and what forms of redress had been offered to the families of the deceased.

“Minister, even as a Cabinet Minister, have there been any discussions on what caused the deaths? What has been done for the bereaved families, and what measures have we put in place to prevent future occurrences?” Shaib queried.

The minister maintained that it would be inappropriate to speculate before the committee submits its report. “Mister Speaker, I am under oath. Until the Hajj Committee chaired by Honourable Collins Dauda presents its report, I cannot provide details on the matter. Once the report is in, I will brief the House adequately,” Ahmed Ibrahim reiterated.

The debate escalated as Tolon MP and Deputy Minority Whip, Habib Iddrisu, expressed his astonishment at the minister’s deflection. He argued that as the Minister for Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim bore ultimate responsibility for addressing matters related to the Hajj, regardless of the committee’s existence.

“Mister Speaker, the Minister’s own title includes ‘Religious Affairs’ – this is clearly within his remit,” Mr. Iddrisu said, pointing out, “We’re talking about the Hajj. This is a religious matter, and he is the sector minister. It is unacceptable that he cannot answer a question on this.”

Mr. Iddrisu highlighted the seriousness of the situation, referencing a widely circulated case during the pilgrimage where a Ghanaian pilgrim, declared dead, was later found to be alive in Madina after funeral rites had already been performed.

“The Ghana Hajj Board issued a death certificate, and two days later, the person emerged alive. This is no ordinary issue, Mister Speaker. The matter deserves transparency and immediate answers,” he said.

Speaker Bagbin directed the Appointments Committee to conduct public hearings and submit a report to the House, stating:

“Honourable Members, I accordingly refer the nominees to the Appointments Committee for the usual consideration. You are not compelled to consider them expeditiously,” the Speaker directed.

The referrals, made under Articles 78(1) and 79(1) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, mark the next step in the nomination process as the committee evaluates the nominees’ suitability for their proposed portfolios.

Two NPP members file injunction to halt upcoming National Delegates Conference

2 NPP members have filed a suit at an Accra High Court to stop the party's Delegates Conferene 2 NPP members have filed a suit at an Accra High Court to stop the party’s Delegates Conferene

Two members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Shamsudeen Iddrisu and Kwadwo Boateng, have filed an application at the Accra High Court seeking an interlocutory injunction to stop the party’s upcoming National Delegates Conference scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

According to court documents sighted by GhanaWeb on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the two plaintiffs are praying the court to issue:

“An order of interlocutory injunction restraining the defendant from organising the Extraordinary National Delegates Conference pending the final determination of the instant suit.”

In his supporting affidavit, Kwadwo Boateng stated that he is a card-bearing member of the NPP in the Bantama Constituency, located in the Ashanti Region.

He further noted that the NPP’s structures, conduct, and internal procedures are governed by the party’s constitution.

Citing relevant sections of the party’s constitution, Boateng argued, “Every year, at least four weeks before the Regional Annual Delegates Conference, a Constituency Annual Delegates Conference must be held in every constituency. Similarly, a Regional Annual Delegates Conference must take place at least four weeks before the National Annual Delegates Conference.”

He continued, “The actions, conduct, membership, structure, organisation, procedures, and activities of the Defendant/Respondent are governed by the Constitution of the New Patriotic Party (hereinafter referred to as ‘the Constitution’). I have attached a copy of the NPP Constitution to this affidavit, marked as Exhibit BK 2.”

Boateng maintained that, “Per the Constitution, at least four (4) weeks prior to the Regional Annual Delegates Conference, there shall be a Constituency Annual Delegates Conference organised by the party in every constituency.”

The plaintiffs contend that the upcoming conference fails to comply with these constitutional requirements and should therefore be halted until the court makes a final ruling on the matter.

‘You control the rate, abokyi controls the dollar’

File photo of US dollar notes File photo of US dollar notes

A Facebook post by the Bank of Ghana on Thursday morning announcing the day’s foreign exchange rate has drawn ridicule from several Ghanaian social media users.

The post, published on the official Bank of Ghana (BoG) Facebook page around 10:00 AM, stated the day’s buying rate at GH¢10.42 and the selling rate at GH¢10.43 per US dollar.

In response, some social media users highlighted the significant disparity between the Bank’s published rates and prevailing rates in the forex market.

A large section of respondents expressed concern that while the BoG continues to announce relatively low exchange rates, these do not reflect the reality on the ground, where the dollar is reportedly being sold for over GH¢13.

“Bank of Ghana has the rate, but Zamarama has the dollars,” one user remarked.

“You control the rate online; abochi controls it offline in the black market,” another added.

One user also asked, “Why don’t banks have dollars to sell to importers?”

Meanwhile, a group of importers expressed frustration over their inability to access dollars from commercial banks, saying the situation is negatively affecting their businesses.

According to the importers, banks are refusing to sell dollars due to the wide gap between the Bank of Ghana’s rates and those of the forex market.

This, they claim, is forcing them to resort to the black market, where rates are significantly higher.

From Man City prospect to Bechem United’s new hope

Aminu in red, was part of Ghana's U17 World Cup team in 2017 Aminu in red, was part of Ghana’s U17 World Cup team in 2017

Once tipped to be one of Ghana’s brightest exports to European football, Aminu Mohammed is back on home soil with a point to prove, and Bechem United believe they’re the club to help him do it.

The 25-year-old forward, who famously caught the eye of Manchester City scouts after lighting up the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup with Ghana, has signed a permanent deal with Bechem ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.

Back then, Aminu’s pace, flair and composure in front of goal made him a standout at WAFA, so much so that City were willing to pay around $2 million for his signature, hoping he could grow into their first team.

But like so many young African talents snapped up by Europe’s elite, Aminu’s path wasn’t smooth.

He never broke into City’s senior squad, spending loan spells at Dutch side NAC Breda and Belgium’s Lommel SK, only to see each move end without the breakthrough he needed.

In 2022, Manchester City released him. His last stop was Kozanis in Greece’s lower leagues, a far cry from the Etihad dream he once chased.

Now, the talented winger has returned home, older, battle-tested, and with a chance to restart where it all began: the Ghana Premier League.

Bechem United see Aminu as a statement signing who can inject pace and creativity into their attack as they look to build on last season’s progress.

Aminu has already linked up with the Hunters’ pre-season camp and is expected to be central to their plans under the current technical team.

Fans who remember his dazzling performances for the Black Starlets will hope he can rediscover the confidence and spark that once made him a $2 million teenager on Europe’s radar.

His journey is a reminder of how brutal football’s talent factory can be, but also of how coming home can offer a second chance.

For Aminu Mohammed, Bechem United isn’t just a new club. It’s a fresh start, a shot at redemption, and maybe, finally, the stage to show the world what Ghana first saw in him.

Burkina Faso military rulers scrap electoral commission, taking control of future polls

Ibrahim Traoré seized power 3 years ago amid concerns about the failure to quell jihadist violence Ibrahim Traoré seized power 3 years ago amid concerns about the failure to quell jihadist violence

Burkina Faso’s military rulers have disbanded the country’s electoral commission calling it a waste of money.

The interior ministry will handle elections in the future, state-run RTB TV reported.

Since seizing power in September 2022, the coup leaders have initiated sweeping reforms, including the postponement of elections which would lead to a return to civilian rule.

A nationwide vote was due last year, but the junta extended the period of transition to democracy until July 2029, allowing leader Capt Ibrahim Traoré to remain in power and free to contest the next presidential election.

The AFP news agency quotes Territorial Administration Minister Emile Zerbo as saying that the electoral commission was “subsidised” with around $870,000 (£650,000) a year.

Abolishing the commission would “reinforce our sovereign control on the electoral process and at the same time limit foreign influences”, he added.

After coming to power three years ago amid criticism that the civilian authorities were failing to deal with a growing Islamist insurgency, the military leaders have rejected the assistance of former colonial power France in favour of Russia.

Rights groups have since accused the army of targeting civilians in its attempt to quash the militants, as well as suppressing political activity and the freedom of expression.

There are also question marks over the effectiveness of the military operation. In the first half of 2025, jihadist group JNIM said it had carried out over 280 attacks in Burkina Faso – double the number for the same period in 2024, according to data verified by the BBC.

Six months enough for Mahama to end galamsey – Tony Aidoo

0

Dr. Tony Aidoo, former Senior Presidential Aide and Head of the Policy Evaluation and Oversight Unit under the late President John Evans Atta Mills, has issued a stern warning to the current NDC administration led by President John Dramani Mahama to address illegal mining urgently or face possible electoral defeat in 2028.

Speaking in an interview on Joy News on Thursday, July 17, Dr. Aidoo emphasized that Ghanaians would not tolerate inaction on campaign promises, particularly on the fight against galamsey, which continues to destroy farmlands, pollute water bodies, and threaten livelihoods across the country.

“If the goodwill that the people of Ghana gave the NDC is going to be dissipated, it will be due to inaction on galamsey and corruption issues. If the government is unable to solve the galamsey issue, I will be disappointed because it was an electoral promise, and you cannot take Ghanaians for a ride,” he stated.

Drawing a contrast with the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, Dr. Aidoo criticised former President Nana Akufo-Addo for his perceived lack of commitment to tackling illegal mining. He urged President Mahama not to repeat the same mistakes.

“Akufo-Addo didn’t care, so President Mahama must not think that Ghanaians do not care about the fight. If he doesn’t solve the galamsey issues, the Ghanaian people will vote the NDC government out in 2028,” he warned.

Dr. Aidoo further argued that the government has sufficient time to act decisively on the matter.

“Six months is long enough to solve galamsey. The Blue Water Guards and the GoldBoard Taskforce are commendable policies, but he should stop the galamsey,” he added.

Trendy Two-Piece Outfits Every Lady Should Try

0

Two-piece outfits have taken over the fashion scene — and for good reason. They are stylish, versatile, and easy to wear, offering a polished look with minimal effort. Whether you’re dressing for a casual day out, a formal event, or just want to stay trendy while feeling comfortable, two-piece sets are the perfect go-to for modern ladies.

One of the most popular types is the crop top and high-waist skirt combo. This pairing flatters the figure and can be styled up or down depending on the fabric and accessories. Ankara two-piece sets are especially bold and colorful, making them ideal for cultural events, church, or even weekend outings.

Pant and blazer sets are another favorite — ideal for corporate wear or formal occasions. These can be styled with a fitted inner top and statement heels for a sleek, boss-lady look. Fabrics like crepe, linen, or cotton work beautifully for this style, offering both comfort and class.

For more relaxed vibes, palazzo pants with a matching top or shorts and shirt combos are great choices. These are perfect for travel, beach days, or casual hangouts. Pair them with sneakers, flats, or sandals for a relaxed but chic finish.

One of the best things about two-piece outfits is the ability to mix and match. You can pair the top or bottom with other pieces in your wardrobe to create new looks without buying a whole new outfit.

Whether made from silk, denim, Ankara, lace, or satin, two-piece sets are here to stay. They save time, offer endless styling options, and ensure you always step out looking coordinated and confident.

OSP talks too much, I don’t trust him – Tony Aidoo slams Kissi Agyebeng

0

Dr. Tony Aidoo, former Senior Presidential Aide and Head of the Policy Evaluation and Oversight Unit under the erstwhile administration of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, has launched a scathing critique of the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, accusing him of lacking the competence and results expected from his high-profile office.

He expressed deep disappointment over what he described as the Special Prosecutor’s failure to secure meaningful corruption-related convictions since assuming office.

“So far, we have had the Attorney General, in the quest to be transparent, bring out some steps he has taken to bring certain people to book, but we have not seen any prosecution yet. And I don’t trust the Special Prosecutor,” Dr. Aidoo stated bluntly.

He criticised Mr. Agyebeng for what he termed excessive media engagement without matching results, suggesting that the Special Prosecutor has focused more on publicity than building solid legal cases.

“He talks big and small. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. He is a shame. He has never succeeded in any prosecution on corruption, so what are we paying him for?” Dr. Aidoo queried on Joy News on Thursday, July 17

According to the veteran politician and governance expert, a well-prepared case backed by solid evidence should not be ignored by the judiciary. He implied that the failures of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) stem from poor case development rather than judicial bias.

“If you build up your case, the judges will not ignore the evidence. But if you fail to provide convincing evidence, then you won’t get anything. I don’t think he is building his cases well; he talks too much.”

Dr. Aidoo concluded with a piece of unsolicited advice to the Special Prosecutor: “I will advise him to talk less and do well.”

Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has charged seven individuals and three companies in connection with a sprawling GHC280 million extortion and money laundering scheme allegedly perpetrated within the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

The accused include former Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, along with other current and former staff of the Authority and directors of private companies believed to have facilitated the laundering of illicit proceeds.

Ablakwa confirms Nigerian traditional leader has retracted ‘Igbo Kingdom in Ghana’ claims and apologized

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has addressed public concerns following a viral video of Nigerian chief Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, who claimed to be the “King of Igbos” in Ghana and expressed plans to establish an ‘Igbo village’ in the country.

The video, which sparked backlash online, has since been clarified by the individual involved.

According to a statement shared via Ablakwa’s Facebook page, the chief was invited for a meeting where he explained that the clip was taken from a 2013 interview and does not reflect his current views. He expressed deep regret over the comments and confirmed that he has abandoned any such intentions, adding that no land had been acquired for that purpose.

“He conveyed profuse apologies to the President, Government, Chiefs, and People of Ghana,” the Minister noted.

Ablakwa, however, reminded all guests, especially fellow Africans, to respect Ghana’s laws and traditions.

In a call for calm, the government urged the public to avoid commentary that could fuel division or xenophobia. “Let us all in the true spirit of African solidarity guard our commentary so this matter does not degenerate,” Ablakwa wrote, reaffirming the strong ties between Ghana and Nigeria.

Defence Minister rewards soldier who rejected ‘galamsey’ bribe

The Minister for Defence, Dr Omane Boamah, has rewarded Lance Corporal Solomon Asare Teye-Tsu, the Ghanaian soldier who was recently honoured and promoted by the Ghana Armed Forces for his patriotic act of rejecting a bribe from illegal miners (galamsey operators) at the Bibiani Gold Mines.

At an all-ranks durbar held for officers, soldiers, and civilian staff of Garrisons 1 & 5 at Burma Camp on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Dr Boamah made a personal donation of GH¢10,000 to L/Cpl Teye-Tsu to promote professionalism in the Armed Forces.

He lauded L/Cpl Teye-Tsu for his exemplary conduct, commended the troops for their bravery, professionalism, and commitment, and reminded them of the importance of upholding their military code.

Dr Boamah urged the leadership of the Armed Forces to act decisively against personnel who deviate from the professional standards expected of the Ghana Armed Forces.

While expressing regret over the recent killing of two soldiers in Bawku, he also cautioned against soldiers who provide unauthorised private security services, calling on the military high command to address this illegal practice.

“Government seeks to enhance operational capacity, improve troop welfare, and explore strategic partnerships and global collaborations,” he said, adding that the barracks would be upgraded with 10,000 new housing units as well as modern equipment and logistics.

On Friday, July 11, 2025, then Private Teye-Tsu, who currently serves with the Department of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces, was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong.

As part of the reward package, he was presented with a citation and nominated to serve with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.

This recognition followed an earlier honour presented by Ojeyz Securities Limited, the private security company managing operations at the Bibiani Gold Mines, where L/Cpl Teye-Tsu had been stationed last year.

It would be recalled that L/Cpl Teye-Tsu was on official guard duty at Bibiani when he was approached by a group of artisanal miners, who attempted to bribe him with a large sum of money in exchange for access to the restricted mining site.

Driven by integrity and patriotism, he rejected the bribe, apprehended the illegal miners, and handed them over to the authorities for prosecution.

Impressed by his selfless action, Ojeyz Securities Limited described him as a “shining star” — an accolade that sparked similar honours from the Ghana Armed Forces.

Aged 30, L/Cpl Teye-Tsu was enlisted into the Ghana Armed Forces in 2023. He hails from Odumase-Krobo in the Eastern Region, and is an alumnus of Manya Krobo Senior High School and King David College, both in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality. He is also a member of Kloma Gbi (Voice of the Krobo States), a Krobo-based youth network.

Ghana Boundary Commission, GCAA discuss collaboration on airspace, border security

Brigadier General Anthony Ntem (M) with a delegation from the GCAA Brigadier General Anthony Ntem (M) with a delegation from the GCAA

The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, Brigadier General Anthony Ntem, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) at Kotoka International Airport on Thursday, July 17, 2025.

The purpose of the visit was to formally introduce himself to the Authority and initiate cooperation and collaboration between the two government institutions on matters relating to air boundary management.

Welcoming the delegation, the Acting Director-General of the GCAA, Rev Stephen Wilfred Arthur, provided an overview of the Authority’s mandate, which includes regulating Ghana’s air transport industry, overseeing economic regulation, and providing air navigation services within the Accra Flight Information Region (FIR).

Rev Arthur noted that the GCAA gained autonomy in 1986 through the promulgation of PNDC Law 151, which has since been amended. The most recent legislation governing the Authority is Act 1120, passed in 2024.

For his part, Brigadier General Ntem expressed appreciation to the Acting Director-General for the insight shared regarding the GCAA’s operations.

He explained that the Ghana Boundary Commission was initially established under Act 795 in 2010, which was repealed and replaced by Act 1123 in 2024.

He outlined the Commission’s functions, including the delimitation of airspace and the resolution of issues concerning air boundary disputes.

“When we have issues with neighbouring countries regarding airspace boundaries, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority is one of the key institutions involved. GCAA is also expected to be part of the Airspace Boundary Technical Committee, which is yet to be formed. Therefore, I deemed it fit to introduce myself and my team and begin formal collaboration on these matters,” he said.

Brigadier General Ntem further noted that, in addition to airspace, the Commission also handles land and maritime boundary matters.

In response, Rev Arthur emphasised the importance of familiarising the GCAA with the provisions of the Ghana Boundary Commission’s new Act to enhance collaboration.

“We pledge to be supportive of your mandate because we operate under the same government. It’s like we are branches of the same tree, we may grow in different directions but share common roots and a trunk, which is the government and the nation. Regardless of how things have been in the past, we believe there is a great opportunity to collaborate more effectively,” he said.

Rev Arthur proposed that the two organisations hold biannual meetings to facilitate knowledge-sharing, suggesting that GCAA’s strategic outputs could serve as valuable inputs for the Commission.

“It is only fair and appropriate that we engage meaningfully to improve our systems,” he added, noting that such collaboration could help resolve issues concerning the Accra FIR.

He also highlighted that cooperation would enhance the GCAA’s provision of air navigation services. The Authority’s Air Navigation Services (ANS) Division is responsible for the airside of the airport, the airspace above the aerodrome, and the oceanic space.

He called for the sharing of protocols and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) related to oceanic air boundaries with the GCAA, noting potential joint operations with the Ghana Maritime Authority, such as search and rescue missions in oceanic airspace.

“Even if something exists from the past, emerging trends and standards may require us to re-examine whether they remain relevant. Whether it’s the oceanic side or our land boundaries, we must share technical demarcations to ensure we are working with the same information,” he added.

He assured the Boundary Commission that the GCAA would make available all relevant technical charts and coordinates of the airspace.

Supporting the Acting Director-General’s remarks, the Authority’s Acting Deputy Director-General (Technical), Theophilus Adonis Aryee Ago, stated that the GCAA would intensify engagement with the Commission to gain a deeper understanding of airspace demarcation, especially since Ghana shares air boundaries with distant countries such as Rwanda.

Ago noted that the current delineation of Ghana’s airspace even covers São Tomé, reinforcing the need for clarity and collaboration in demarcation matters.

At the end of the meeting, the Commission presented a copy of its new Act to the Acting Director-General of the GCAA.

Stonebwoy is a popular dancehall musician Stonebwoy is a popular dancehall musician

Ghanaian dancehall heavyweight Stonebwoy has stirred conversation online following comments he made during a live radio interview.

While appearing on Hitz FM’s Cruise Control on July 16, 2025, Stonebwoy took a moment to give a shoutout to his wife, Dr. Louisa Satekla, and their two daughters.

“Shoutouts to ‘Doc,’ my very pretty and beautiful wife,” he said.

He then cheekily asked, “If you don’t have a wife, wetin you gain?”

In a mix of English and pidgin, Stonebwoy made some cryptic remarks that drew laughter in the studio, suggesting that having a wife is far better than just dating.

“You see, he didn’t have a wife. He couldn’t have a wife. It’s a girlfriend business, he couldn’t marry. He’s a stubborn boy,” he quipped.

Although Stonebwoy didn’t mention anyone by name, many social media users interpreted the remarks as a subtle jab at fellow musician Shatta Wale.

Reactions on X (formerly Twitter) came in fast, with users commenting: “Always trying to be petty… Stonebwoy should grow up,” and “This goes straight to Shatta Wale.”

Tano North NDC Executive Committee Disowns members

0

The Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Tano North Constituency has said that a recent press conference held by some members of the party does not represent the official position of the party in the area.

They have accused the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tano North, Pius Opoku, of nepotism and are demanding his dismissal.

Some members of the party in Bomaa, at a press conference on Tuesday, July 15, accused the MCE of consistently appointing friends and family to key positions within the municipal assembly.

They enumerated the School Feeding Coordinator and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Coordinator among other positions.

In addition, they expressed their dissatisfaction with the current leadership of the party, claiming that the situation has created an environment of mistrust and discontent among party members.

The group, therefore, called on President John Mahama through the Minister of Local Government to sack the MCE with immediate effect and threatened to demonstrate against Mr Pius Opoku.

In a press statement on Thursday, July 17, Abudu Issifu, Deputy Constituency Secretary for Tano North, stated that the earlier press conference was not sanctioned by the Constituency Executive Committee and does not reflect the official position of the NDC in Tano North.

He noted that though the NDC respects the democratic rights of individuals and affiliate groups to express their opinions, it is misleading and disingenuous to present such views as the collective voice of the Tano North NDC.

The Deputy Secretary indicated that the party is a structured and disciplined political organisation, adding that all official communications are issued through recognised party channels and appointed spokespersons.

“We therefore call on the media, the general public, and our cherished party supporters to treat the contents of that press conference as the personal views of the organisers, not the official stance of the Tano North Constituency of the NDC,” Mr Issifu noted.

Mr Issifu, therefore, entreated the general public, especially residents of Tano North, members and leadership of the NDC to disregard the recent press conference.

He has assured that the current constituency executive committee remains focused and committed to its objective of winning the parliamentary seat for the first time since 1996.

“We will not be distracted by such unauthorised and misleading actions by some individuals and groups,” Mr Abudu Issifu emphasised.

Chief of Staff calls for Governance Excellence ahead of 2025 Boardroom Summit

0

Organizers of the Boardroom Governance Summit have reaffirmed their commitment to promoting governance excellence, ethical leadership, and national development with a high-level courtesy call to the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, at the Jubilee House ahead of the 2025 edition of the Summit

The strategic engagement, held under the auspices of Ghana’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, who will also be the Guest of Honor at the Summit in October, marks the beginning of this year’s journey toward the much-anticipated Summit, which is expected to spotlight the national importance of effective corporate governance.

The courtesy call was led by the Convenor, renowned industrialist and global governance advocate Professor Douglas Boateng in collaboration with, the Institute of Directors Ghana (IoD-Gh), Ghana Bar Association, Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) and other partners.

Speaking during the engagement, the Chief of Staff reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to promoting governance excellence across all spheres of national life.

“As a nation, there are times when we become accustomed to our usual ways of doing things, and we need someone to prompt us, because if you keep doing the same thing repeatedly, you tend to become complacent. That’s why we’re excited about this summit: it offers a platform to discuss and strategize on how best we can run our institutions and companies more efficiently” he said.

Mr. Debrah further emphasized that robust governance structures are foundational to effective public sector delivery and private sector growth, particularly in the face of today’s complex global challenges. “From time to time, we must pause and reflect: what are we doing right, and what are we doing wrong? President Mahama intends to reinvigorate our systems of governance in areas where we have become lax” he added.

In his remarks, Professor Douglas Boateng highlighted the importance of national ownership in the governance discourse.

“Today’s courtesy call on the government is a reaffirmation of our shared belief that board governance excellence, particularly at the boardroom level, is not a peripheral discussion but a national imperative.,” said Prof. Boateng.

He added that the principles guiding boardrooms should extend beyond corporate spaces to public decision-making bodies.

He stated, “It is important to remember that boardrooms are not only in corporate towers. Cabinets and ministerial committees are also boardrooms where decisions shaping the destiny of the nation are made. Like corporate boards, they must be guided by best-practice principles of transparency, accountability, competence, and ethical stewardship.”

This year’s engagement builds on the momentum generated by the maiden edition in 2024, which brought together over 700 C-suite executives and governance professionals to explore the intricate relationship between boardroom governance, accountability, and sustainable development.

With this year’s summit projected to draw an even larger participation and deeper stakeholder engagement, the 2025 edition promises to further entrench the values of ethical leadership and long-term value creation in Ghana’s corporate and public sector institutions.
