State losing revenue as foreign retailers bypass GIPC Act 865

0

“A person who is not a citizen may engage in a trading enterprise only if that person invests not less than US$1million in cash or relevant goods and services in the enterprise, as required under the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act 865.”

It is a bright day at the Suame Magazine Market in Kumasi, where bustling activity among the energetic youth reflects the daily struggle to make ends meet. Most traders here deal in automotive spare-parts, mechanical services and related retail activities.

In Ghana, retailing is legally reserved for locals as the GIPC Act 865 (Section 27a) states:

“A person who is not a citizen or an enterprise which is not wholly owned by a citizen shall not invest or participate in the sale of goods or provision of services in a market, petty trading or hawking or selling of goods in a stall at any place.”

The GIPC is also mandated to register, monitor and keep records of all enterprises in Ghana – both local and foreign.

However, at Suame Magazine retailing – meant to be the preserve of Ghanaians – has increasingly been taken over by Nigerian traders, according to several local operators.

“Most of them have migrated here,” said Prince Sarfo, a mechanic at the Asawase Renault shop, in an interview with Business and Financial Times.

Sarfo has worked at the shop for over 20 years, having stayed on after his apprenticeship due to limited access to land or space to start his own business. He said over the years he and his colleagues have encountered numerous Nigerian traders engaging in retail around Kumasi.

He revealed that he often buys spare-parts from a nearby Nigerian-owned shop because they consistently have what he needs. However, he has never received a proper VAT receipt from the trader.

He added that this practice is widespread: “I’ve done this business for over 20 years. Only a few traders give us VAT receipts. The last time I got a VAT receipt from the Magazine was around 2018 or 2019. Since then, no one has issued me one. There’s one man at the Magazine who can get you a VAT receipt,” he said.

Prince further admitted that he sometimes prefers buying from the Nigerian traders because their prices are lower and they always have stock. The presence of these traders has intensified competition for local operators, who believe they are at a disadvantage due to taxes.

Ashanti Regional Chairman-Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) Anthony Oppong explained:

“Our goods are more expensive because of the numerous taxes we pay. Most of these Nigerian and foreign traders do not pay any form of taxes. They hide behind the ECOWAS treaty and bring in goods without paying taxes. How do you expect me, who pays over 12% VAT, to compete with such a person?”

He added that this tax disparity is part of what has allowed foreign traders, particularly Nigerians, to “take over the market”.

Both the GUTA chair and Sarfo allege that some foreign traders use unapproved routes to bring in goods – especially those who have not registered with the GIPC.

Oppong told Business and Financial Times that many of the Nigerian, Egyptian, Turkish traders do not have a definite address for easy tracing.

“They do not have any form of address; they employ a few locals and use them to sell their goods. They have warehouses somewhere in town, come to the markets with their complimentary cards and give them to unsuspecting people. Later, they supply goods on the blind side of city authorities, evading taxes – especially income tax, PAYE.”

Mr. Sarfo for his part claimed that most foreign traders do not issue proper receipts and their activities could facilitate illicit financial flows. “They change their money into Naira and send it back to their country after making sales. They do not save in local banks. They send the money through their counterparts,” he alleged.

Mr. Oppong further cautioned that: “Beyond the significant losses in taxes and national revenue, Ghana risks having its trading activities dominated by foreign entities in the coming years – a development he describes as dangerous, a potential national security threat and a setback to employment opportunities for the country’s growing youth population”.

This situation made GUTA raise serious concerns and go ahead to close down several shops belonging to Nigerian and other African nationals sometime this year – creating tension in especially Abossey Okai Market, a major spare-parts market in Accra.

In response to these escalating tensions, Director of Events and Programmes at Afrocentric Network, Seyiram Fiakeye, has called for a full audit and review of the GIPC Act 865. Afrocentric Network advocates for the freedom of Africans to trade and work freely across the continent.

In an interview with B&FT, Mr. Fiakeye argued that the Act disproportionately favours elite investors while restricting ordinary African traders.

“To our lawmakers: Why craft laws like GIPC Act 865 that protect no one but elite investors? How many ordinary citizens can raise US$1million or employ 20 skilled workers to sell phone accessories or clothes?” he questioned.

“These policies are colonial relics disguised as economic reform and must be dismantled.”

He cautioned that Africa cannot afford internal conflict when facing global economic pressure. “While other continents build global empires, we are busy fighting over stalls in Kasoa,” he said.

He called for: An immediate end to targetted actions against Nigerian and other African traders; Equal enforcement of trade laws – if other foreign nationals engage in retail, the law must apply across the board or be amended for fairness; A full audit and public-centred review of GIPC Act 865 and related restrictions; and a nationwide campaign to promote African unity, economic cooperation and cultural pride.

The debate over foreign participation in retail trade at Suame Magazine highlights tensions between enforcement of existing statutes, the realities of cross-border commerce under ECOWAS and concerns about tax compliance and illicit financial flows. Traders, unions and civil society groups say the situation requires urgent, transparent action to ensure fairness for local businesses while protecting legitimate pan-African trade.

A news publication on Ghanaweb.com indicates that the country loses more than US$9billion to corruption, tax evasion and smuggling – which are all enablers of illicit financial flows (IFFs).

More often than not, tax evasion comes about when individuals and business owners either underdeclare goods and services or, most importantly, do not have their business registered with the appropriate quarters. This makes it difficult for law enforcement agencies to track them easily for identification and collection of what is due the state.

GIPC 2024 investment report

In GIPC’s 2024 investment report, a total of 140 projects were registered by the GIPC, marking an 11.48% increase compared to 2023. However, the FDI value decreased by 5% from US$649.58million in 2023 to US$617.61million in 2024.

At the end of fourth-quarter 2024, one hundred and forty (140) projects were registered by GIPC with total estimated investment cost of US$651.72million. This comprised a FDI component of US$617.61million and local component of US$34.11million. Total initial transfers amounted to US$ 31.25million.

Of the 140 projects registered, 107 were wholly foreign-owned, representing 76.43% of the projects with a total estimated investment cost of US$341.65million. The Joint Venture projects between Ghanaians and their foreign counterparts were 33, representing 23.57% of the projects and with a total estimated investment cost of US$310.07million. Of the total, general trade had 15.

A total 15,328 jobs are expected to be generated from the 140 projects registered in 2024, with operations at full capacity. 13,733 -representing 89.59% of the total jobs – will be for Ghanaians and the remaining 1,595 representing 10.41% will be for non-Ghanaians. Only 10 projects were in Ashanti Region.

Nigerians had five of the registered projects.

Renewal of GIPC Registration: From January to December 2024, 694 companies renewed their registration with the Centre. Under the GIPC Act 865, companies are required to renew their certificates every two years. Of the 694 companies that renewed their registrations, 455 were wholly foreign companies, 165 were Joint Venture companies involving Ghanaians and 74 were wholly Ghanaian companies.

Consequently, if the GIPC Act 865 continues to be poorly enforced, the country risks losing billions of cedis – despite significant contributions made by the few companies that consistently register and renew their permits as required.

Torgah outplayed 44 other regular professionals to claim the coveted title, earning a GHS 70,000 winner’s cheque from the leadership of PGA Ghana.

After missing out at last year’s championship at the Damang Golf Club in the Western Region, Torgah arrived in Kumasi fully prepared and determined.

He opened the four-day tournament with an impressive 67, positioning himself well despite strong competition from early leaders including Kwame Ladigi.

He then delivered consistent, high-level performances—carding 72, 67, and 68 over the final three rounds—to secure victory ahead of Zimbabwe’s Victor Mapwanya, Nigeria’s Francis Epe, and Ghana’s Kojo Barnni.

Speaking to the media after receiving his trophy and cheque, Torgah said he had prepared extensively for the championship and was fully aware of the challenges he would face.

He expressed gratitude to the PGA leadership and sponsors, adding that he hopes to see more lucrative tournaments organized in Ghana to attract golfers from across Africa and beyond.

This year’s championship, sponsored by Genser Energy and other partners, brought together more than 75 golfers, including participants in the ladies’ and seniors’ categories.

In the ladies’ division, Uganda’s Irene Nakalembe emerged champion after overcoming strong competition from Senegal’s Oumy Dieye and Côte d’Ivoire’s Chantel Bebhibro.

Ghana’s representatives, Constance Awuni and Jessica Tei, finished fourth and fifth respectively. The seniors’ division produced one of the tournament’s biggest surprises when Anthony Gbenyor dethroned veteran champion Emos Korblah, finishing with scores of 72, 71, and 71 over three days to clinch the title.

At the closing ceremony, Hans De Beer, President of PGA Ghana, praised the golfers for their outstanding performances and encouraged them to maintain their form heading into the new year.

He also commended the Royal Golf Club for its hospitality and thanked Genser Energy for its continued support, urging corporate Ghana to invest in professional golf, which he described as the “future of the sport.”

Vice President Ahmed Padori, Tournament Director Eric Henaku, and former Tournament Director Rev. Akwasi Prempeh also applauded the golfers—especially the international participants—for their consistent involvement in tournaments held in Ghana.

The Head of Operations at Royal Golf Club, Prof Benard Baiden indicated that the golf will also be ready to support the pros and tasked its leadership to maintain their style and direction in their quest to improve the standards of pro golf.

The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Otchere Baafi, has urged New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates to rally firmly behind former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s pivotal flagbearer election scheduled for 31 January 2026.

Vintage Shirts for Women

0

Vintage shirts for women are a style staple that transcends generations. Whether you’re a fashion enthusiast or someone looking to add a unique touch to your wardrobe, vintage shirts offer a perfect blend of nostalgia, individuality, and timeless elegance. These shirts often carry a story with them, providing a sense of history that modern fashion often lacks.

One of the main reasons vintage shirts are so popular is their exceptional craftsmanship. Many vintage pieces, especially those from the 80s, 90s, and earlier, were made with meticulous attention to detail. The fabrics, cuts, and designs were often high-quality, with tailored fits and flattering silhouettes that remain highly sought after. The durability of vintage shirts means they can stand the test of time, providing not just style but also longevity.

Vintage shirts come in a wide range of styles, from floral blouses to oversized denim shirts, and from graphic tees to silky button-ups. Each one offers a unique design, whether it’s the color palette, intricate patterns, or even a distinctive logo or graphic. Women can experiment with various styles, pairing a vintage shirt with modern accessories or combining it with other vintage elements to create a retro-inspired look.

The charm of vintage shirts lies not only in their aesthetics but also in their versatility. They can be dressed up or down, making them suitable for various occasions. A classic silk blouse from the 50s can be worn to a formal event, while a worn-in band tee from the 80s can easily be styled for a casual day out.

As sustainability continues to grow in importance in the fashion world, vintage shirts also offer an eco-friendly alternative to fast fashion. By purchasing second-hand or pre-owned shirts, women can contribute to reducing waste while enjoying the unique, one-of-a-kind designs that vintage clothing offers.

Vintage shirts for women are not just pieces of clothing—they are expressions of personal style, history, and sustainability. With their timeless appeal, these shirts remain a go-to for women looking to make a statement with their wardrobe.

Effutu Chief worried over impact on water supply and agriculture

0

The Chief of Effutu, Nai Ghartey VII, is demanding an immediate halt to illegal mining activities taking place upstream of the Ayensu River, a vital water source that serves several districts in the Central Region.

Pollution of the Ayensu River, he warned, is not only crippling water supply but also severely affecting fishing and farming activities across the region. He has therefore called for urgent, coordinated action to curb the menace.

In recent months, more than 10 districts in the Central Region have faced an acute water crisis following the shutdown of the Kwanyako headworks of the Ghana Water Limited due to heavy siltation of the raw water source that feeds the Kwanyako treatment plant.

The shutdown forced authorities to install a temporary pumping system in the shallow parts of the dam, resulting in an inconsistent supply.

Although the Winneba headworks remain operational, residents within the Effutu Municipality have been receiving visibly contaminated water.

These developments, officials say, stem from illegal mining activities in the Eastern Region—upstream of the once pristine Ayensu River.

Speaking to Channel One News at the University of Education, Winneba’s 30th graduation ceremony, Nai Ghartey VII expressed deep concern over the situation. While acknowledging the government’s efforts in combating illegal mining, he lamented the continuing damage to water supply, agriculture, fishing, and even marine life.

He stressed the need for stronger, more decisive, and collaborative action, particularly from the government.

“It threatens our food security, our public health, our natural environment, and the very future we are duty-bound to reserve for the generations that will follow us,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Professor Jobson Mitchual, pledged the institution’s commitment to supporting the fight with evidence-based research.

“As an academic community, we will continue providing research-based insights, constructive feedback, and meaningful contributions to support the national fight against galamsey,” he said.

The Central Regional Minister, Eduamoah Okyere Ekow Panyin, also expressed concern about the impact of illegal mining on districts within the previously galamsey-free eastern part of the region. He hinted that, but for procedural restrictions, he would have taken more personal measures to confront the issue.

Despite the challenges, he remains hopeful.

“We thank God that we are almost there. We have been able to clear those who are destroying our water bodies,” he stated.

Bawumia says endorsements reinforce strong backing from NPP faithful

0

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed gratitude for the continued support he is receiving from party members as he campaigns to become the NPP flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr Bawumia took to social media to thank delegates across multiple constituencies for their endorsements, which he said have strengthened his confidence in the party’s grassroots backing.

“The endorsements I continue to receive across constituencies have only solidified my faith in the strong support of party faithful, confirming what I already knew – that we are in this together! Thank you Abuakwa North, New Juaben North and New Juaben South for the love you demonstrated yesterday,” he wrote on Facebook.

During a tour of New Juaben, the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Otchere Baafi, urged NPP members to unite behind Dr Bawumia, describing him as the most experienced and well-recognised candidate to lead the party to victory in 2028.

Addressing delegates in Koforidua, Otchere Baafi stressed the significance of the upcoming 31 January 2026 primary.

“I’m saying that the 31st January election is not a joke. It’s a crucial election and we need an experienced person. We need someone who has been well-marketed and is well known by Ghanaians. That person is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” the MP said.

He further recalled Dr Bawumia’s loyalty to the party during challenging periods, adding that the former Vice President remains the NPP’s strongest candidate for the national polls.

Otchere Baafi emphasised the role of grassroots mobilisation in achieving electoral success.

“Politics is local, so the responsibility lies with all of us at the polling station level. It is a collective responsibility. Let us come together, work diligently at the local level, and ensure the NPP reclaims power. The only person who can help us win decisively is the experienced and well-marketed Dr Bawumia,” he added.

Ghana Eagles Defeat Nigeria Black Stallions in Heritage Cup

Ghana’s senior national men’s rugby union team defeated Nigeria 38 to 11 on November 29, 2025, at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium in Accra, securing their first victory in the inaugural Rugby Union Heritage Cup. The triumph carried special significance given Nigeria’s recent return to competitive rugby after years of international suspension.

The Black Stallions had been absent from official rugby competition since May 2021, when Nigeria’s federation was dissolved by the country’s Ministry of Sports. Rugby Africa swiftly suspended the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) from all international activities following what the continental body described as government interference. The ban prevented Nigeria from participating in numerous competitions, including 2023 Rugby World Cup qualifiers and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Ademola Are was elected president of the NRFF on October 26, 2025, marking a fresh start for Nigerian rugby. His leadership coincided with efforts to restore the federation’s standing and bring the country back into competitive international play. The Heritage Cup match represented one of Nigeria’s first major international fixtures since emerging from the suspension that had severely hampered development of the sport in the country.

Ghana dominated the first half, pinning the Black Stallions for most of the period and building a commanding 26 to 6 advantage. The Eagles demonstrated superior possession and territorial control, executing attacking plays with precision while limiting Nigerian opportunities. Their forward pack controlled set pieces, providing clean ball for backs to exploit gaps in the visiting defense.

The hosts added 12 points in the second half while Nigeria managed six, but the outcome had been effectively decided by halftime. Despite the defeat, Nigerian captain Obi Wilson praised Ghana’s performance and acknowledged the competitive nature of the match. He pledged to use the game as a turning point as his team seeks to rebuild following years of international isolation.

Wilson stated his squad would return home and prepare for upcoming fixtures. He characterized the match as friendly and emphasized his team’s intention to improve, noting they still have additional friendlies scheduled. The captain’s comments reflected determination to learn from the experience rather than dwelling on the loss.

Ghana head coach Colin Osborne expressed optimism after the match. He noted his pleasure at witnessing rugby’s growth in Ghana, highlighting his seven to eight years working with the Ghana Rugby Football Union. Osborne emphasized the importance of natural rivalries between nations for building atmosphere and growing the game in both countries.

Captain Lukman Yaya expressed satisfaction with Ghana’s performance despite limited preparation time. He revealed that some players had joined local-based teammates with only one training session on Friday before the Saturday fixture. Yaya issued a challenge to any African team willing to face Ghana, declaring readiness for competition.

Insuah Rafatu, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, thanked everyone involved in organizing the 2025 Rugby Heritage Cup. She extended special appreciation to Nigerian counterparts for honoring Ghana’s invitation and suggested a return match in Nigeria next year. Rafatu praised corporate sponsors including Kivo, Sunda, Interplast, and KEDA for their support.

The GRFU President announced Ghana’s upcoming match against Ivory Coast scheduled for December 3, 2025, at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium. The fixture will provide another opportunity for the Eagles to test themselves against regional competition and continue building momentum in African rugby.

Herbert Mensah, President of Rugby Africa, attended the event and highlighted West Africa’s rugby potential while stressing the need for stronger structures to advance the sport regionally. He emphasized the importance of regular high-level competition across the sub-region, citing East Africa’s consistent rugby matches as a model worth emulating.

Mensah was elected President of Rugby Africa in March 2023, becoming the first Anglophone leader of the continental governing body. Under his leadership, Rugby Africa has emphasized commercial development and creating opportunities for member associations. He has advocated for treating rugby as a lucrative business venture rather than purely recreational activity.

The Heritage Cup aims to strengthen Ghana-Nigeria ties through rugby development and positive rivalry. Organizers positioned the tournament as celebrating unity, pride, and African sporting excellence. The 2025 edition brought the two West African nations face to face in a thrilling showdown that showcased regional talent while fostering diplomatic and cultural connections.

For Nigeria, the match represented an important step toward restoring their international reputation after the damaging suspension. The NRFF had been banned following the May 2021 dissolution of 31 sports federation boards by Nigeria’s Ministry of Youth and Sports Development. Rugby Africa President Khaled Babbou had written to Nigerian authorities expressing disagreement with the arbitrary action taken without following approved constitutional procedures.

The suspension prevented Nigeria from participating in various international engagements, including Rugby World Cup 2023 qualifiers and the Africa Women’s Cup. Many foreign-based players lost interest in representing Nigeria during the ban period, and the federation struggled to rebuild credibility. The lifting of sanctions allowed the country to gradually re-enter competitive rugby.

Are had expressed confidence that Nigeria would quickly return to international competition after assuming office as NRFF president. He acknowledged the journey had been difficult but thanked World Rugby for understanding the need to develop rugby in Nigeria. The Heritage Cup provided a platform to showcase Nigeria’s returning presence on the continental stage.

Ghana Rugby has experienced significant growth in recent years under leadership committed to developing the sport at grassroots and elite levels. The Eagles have competed in Rugby Africa Cup tournaments and sevens competitions, gradually building their profile within continental rugby. Hosting major fixtures like the Heritage Cup demonstrates Ghana’s capacity to organize international events.

The victory extends Ghana’s recent positive momentum in rugby development. The team has benefited from increased support from corporate sponsors and improved training facilities. Players participating in the Heritage Cup represented a mix of locally based talent and diaspora athletes with Ghanaian heritage who have returned to represent their ancestral homeland.

Rugby participation continues expanding across West Africa, with Ghana and Nigeria positioned as potential regional powers if proper development structures are maintained. The Heritage Cup could become an annual fixture that raises standards in both countries through regular competitive exposure. Such tournaments help identify talent, provide international experience, and generate public interest in rugby.

The December rematch against Ivory Coast will test whether Ghana can maintain the form displayed against Nigeria. Consistent performances against quality opposition will be necessary for the Eagles to achieve ambitions of qualifying for major tournaments like the Rugby World Cup. Development of depth across all positions remains crucial for sustained success.

For Nigerian rugby, rebuilding after suspension requires patience and strategic planning. The team fielded entirely home-based players for the Heritage Cup, limiting their ability to compete against Ghana’s more established program. Integrating foreign-based talent while developing domestic leagues will be essential for the Black Stallions to regain competitive standing.

The Heritage Cup demonstrated that West African rugby can produce compelling competition when nations commit resources to development. Both Ghana and Nigeria possess large populations and athletic traditions that could support vibrant rugby cultures. Converting potential into sustained achievement requires consistent investment in coaching, facilities, and youth programs.

Two Police Officers sentenced to 13 years for trafficking narcotics

0

A Circuit Court in Tema has sentenced two police officers to a combined 13 years in prison for unlawful possession and conspiracy to traffic narcotic substances.

The court, presided over by Her Ladyship Aleanor Kakra Barnes Botchway, convicted Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nasiru Amadu and Corporal Emmanuel Mintah after nearly four years of trial.

According to the prosecution, led by ASP Ernest Kuofie, the case began in 2023 when an officer at the Afienya District Police Command reported suspicious activities involving the two. At the time, Amadu, 48, was the second-in-command at the Sakumono District Police Headquarters, while Mintah, 43, served under him as a service driver.

On November 19, 2023, officers on snap-check duty received intelligence that a Nissan Navara with registration number GP 727 was transporting narcotics from Ho to Accra. At about 7:15 p.m., the accused officers arrived at the checkpoint and were intercepted.

A search of their vehicle uncovered eight sacks containing 541 compressed parcels of substances suspected to be narcotics.

Investigations further revealed that Mintah had a relative—popularly known as “Oluman”—a resident of Ashaiman Tulaku and a known narcotics dealer. On the day of the incident, Mintah had been contracted by “Oluman” to transport Indian hemp from Peki Tsibu in the Volta Region to Tulaku. Mintah contacted Amadu, who also communicated with “Oluman” to finalise the arrangement.

The two officers then drove vehicle GP 727 from Sakumono to a forest near Peki Tsibu, where they received the drugs from a Benz bus. They were arrested on their way back to Accra. It later emerged that this was the second time the officers had engaged in such an operation.

The Forensic Laboratory confirmed the seized substances as narcotics.

The court ruled that the two officers unlawfully possessed narcotics for trafficking, contrary to Section 23(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960, and Section 37(2)(b) of the Narcotic Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).

ASP Amadu and Corporal Mintah were sentenced to 10 and 5 years, respectively, to run concurrently. They were additionally fined 10,000 penalty units (GH¢120,000) each, or in default, serve an additional three years in prison.

Agbogbloshie Kayayei Launch Sports Association
Agbogbloshie Kayayei Launch Sports Association

Female head porters at Agbogbloshie’s Kokomba Yam Market launched the Kayayei Games Club Association on November 30, 2025, marking a historic moment for the informal worker community as they organized their first sporting competition featuring tug of war, aerobics, and entertainment. The event brought together hundreds of participants and spectators in a celebration that combined athletic competition with community building.

The inauguration featured an exhibition of musical talent by popular musicians including Selection One, following an aerobics and functional fitness session led by Charles Owusu Ansah and his team. The day-long festival represented an effort by benevolent and community-oriented individuals to provide recreational opportunities for women who typically face harsh working conditions as manual laborers transporting goods on their heads.

Emmanuel Olla Williams, President of the Ghana Tug of War Association (GHATOWA), was represented at the event. The association has become a prominent force in promoting grassroots sports across Ghana since receiving recognition as the 50th sports federation from the National Sports Authority (NSA) in February 2023. Williams has organized numerous community sporting events through his organization Dreamland Sports Plus.

Mark Quarshie represented the Director General of the National Sports Authority at the ceremony and addressed attendees about the benefits of sports and recreation for community development and personal wellbeing. His presence signaled official recognition of the initiative to bring organized athletics to the kayayei community.

Hannah Yusif Hassan, representing the Minister of Sports and Recreation, commended organizers for their initiative and congratulated the competition winners. Her participation demonstrated government interest in supporting sporting activities among vulnerable worker populations who often lack access to formal recreation opportunities.

The highlight of the day was the thrilling tug of war competition, where teams Kanjool and Benafed defeated opponents Bigben/Naoloio and Nankpalrib by a score of two to zero. The winners received refreshments and cash prizes for their performance, providing tangible recognition for their athletic efforts.

Zeinab, who led the second-place team, explained they received information about the event at the last minute but decided to participate anyway. She expressed determination to prepare more thoroughly for future competitions by learning the rules properly, acquiring appropriate athletic wear, and training systematically to win the next event. Her comments reflected enthusiasm for continued participation in organized sports activities.

Organizers have already scheduled another competition for the end of December to determine who will emerge as the dominant team at Agbogbloshie. The quick scheduling of a follow-up event indicates strong initial interest and suggests the sports association may become a regular feature of community life in the area.

Kayayei, a term combining the Hausa word “kaya” meaning load or burden with the Ga word “yei” meaning women or females, refers to female porters who migrate from Ghana’s rural northern regions to urban centers seeking economic opportunities. These women transport goods and agricultural products to and from markets, typically carrying heavy loads in large pans balanced on their heads using moistened cloth coils as buffers.

The kayayei working at Agbogbloshie market face particularly challenging conditions. They toil in poor conditions with minimal income, often working long hours to earn meager amounts. Many sleep on market pavements without proper shelter and lack access to basic amenities. Their vulnerable status has made them targets for various social interventions over the years.

The launch of the sports association represents a grassroots effort to improve quality of life for these workers through recreation and community engagement. Sports participation can provide physical fitness benefits, social connections, stress relief, and opportunities for personal achievement that extend beyond their daily labor.

Previous government initiatives have attempted to address kayayei needs through hostel construction and skills training programs. In 2019, the government announced plans for a 600-bed hostel at Agbogbloshie to provide accommodation and training for vulnerable young women working as head porters. However, such projects have often faced implementation challenges and community tensions.

The Kayayei Games Club Association differs from top-down government programs by originating within the community itself. The bottom-up approach may prove more sustainable and responsive to actual needs of the women involved. Sports clubs created by participants themselves often generate stronger commitment and participation than externally imposed programs.

Emmanuel Olla Williams has built a reputation for organizing community tug of war events across Ghana. His association has brought the sport to festivals, schools, and neighborhoods, demonstrating how traditional strength competitions can build community cohesion while providing entertainment. Events like “Who Rules Chorkor” in 2018 established templates for neighborhood sporting competitions.

Ghana’s tug of war teams have competed internationally with notable success. At the 10th African Tug of War Championships in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, in June 2023, Akroso Senior High Technical School placed third in the men’s 640kg category despite competing against experienced teams from Uganda, Zambia, South Africa, and Nigeria. The bronze medal performance demonstrated Ghana’s growing capabilities in the sport.

The Ghana Education Service formally adopted tug of war in secondary schools in 2021, leading to greater participation and development of talent at the youth level. Several schools have since represented Ghana at continental championships, with Mamfe Methodist Girls’ SHS winning multiple medals at tournaments in South Africa.

For the Agbogbloshie kayayei, the sports association offers opportunities that extend beyond athletic competition. Regular sporting activities can help build leadership skills, teamwork capabilities, and confidence. Successful athletes from the community could potentially become role models for younger women considering migration to urban centers.

The December competition will test whether initial enthusiasm translates into sustained participation. Organizers hope to establish regular fixtures that give kayayei something to look forward to beyond their daily labor. Success could inspire similar initiatives at other major markets where head porters congregate, potentially creating an inter-market competition structure.

The November 30 inauguration marked a modest but meaningful step toward improving conditions for one of Ghana’s most vulnerable worker populations. Whether the Kayayei Games Club Association becomes a lasting institution or a brief experiment will depend on continued community support, effective organization, and the determination of the women themselves to maintain involvement despite demanding work schedules.

GRA boss pledges simpler, more predictable tax regime

Anthony Sarpong is the Commissioner-General of the GRA Anthony Sarpong is the Commissioner-General of the GRA

The Commissioner-General of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Sarpong, has pledged government’s commitment to a simpler, more predictable and transparent tax system, announcing that major reforms to income tax and Customs laws are in the offing for 2026.

Addressing industry leaders at the 65th Annual General Meeting of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Sarpong said tax simplicity is critical to fostering industrial growth and competitiveness – particularly within government’s flagship 24-hour economy.

“We believe that a predictable and transparent tax regime is one of the means to encourage competitiveness. When the tax laws and policies are clear, they are fairly applied, consistent; businesses can plan, invest and innovate with confidence,” he noted.

The GRA boss pointed to recent comprehensive VAT reforms captured in the 2026 budget as a sign of government’s shifted approach, which he said was shaped by consistent engagement with the business community.

“This is a process that as government, as GRA, we would like to continue. You see that in the 2026 budget; again, the minister has signaled that there’s going to be major reforms of income tax and the Customs Act,” he added.

He assured the audience of broader collaboration with industry in order to provide the conducive environment and stability businesses need, emphasising the advanced signalling’s importance.

“So that is signalling to us that something is going to be done and, of course, with the involvement of industry your inputs are considered,” Mr. Sarpong added.

The outgoing AGI president Dr Humphery Ayim-Darke acknowledged the positive results of collaboration, listing several hard-won policy gains that have simplified the tax burden for local manufacturers. These include an extension of zero-rate VAT on local textiles and abolition of the COVID-19 levy.

Emphasising government’s commitment to predictability, Mr. Sarpong added: “Government has been very deliberate to ensure that there are no new taxes involved”. He therefore clarified that the current focus is on “deepening and strengthening those that are already in the tax laws and removing the bottlenecks which do not support business growth”.

The GRA boss said government is aiming to leverage technology in simplifying the tax experience for businesses, announcing that a new Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS) is set to go live by March 2026.

“This is an automation of tax administration that will take us to the next higher level of ensuring the processes of complying with tax administration is made easier, convenient and supports the agenda of businesses,” Sarpong explained – stating the system will reduce the effort required for tax registration, payment and filing.

Further simplifying the tax system for importers, Mr. Sarpong confirmed the rollout of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system for Customs valuation. This, he argued, will eliminate human intervention and subjectivity; thus creating a fairer and more straightforward process for determining import duties.

Asante Kotoko’s winless run in the ongoing 2025/2026 Ghana Premier League continued at home on matchday 12 against Medeama SC.

The Porcupine Warriors fought from a two goal deficit in the first half to tie the game 2-2 draw at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi against the Tarkwa-based side.

Medeama took the early lead in the game in the 5th minute through Derrick Fordjour before Yussif Mubarik doubled the visitor’s lead from the penalty spot in the 18th minute.

Kotoko increased their momentum in the second half and it paid off in the 69th minute when Peter Amidu Acquah reacted sharply inside the box to power the ball into the net.

Captain Samba O’Neil got the equalizer in the 95th minute to snatch a point for the home side as they push for a win in 3 games.

Medeama SC have now moved to the second position on the Premier League table with 23 points while Asante Kotoko sit 5 with 21 points after 12 games in the season.

‘I saw them driving over injured people’

0

Abdulqadir Abdullah Ali suffered serious nerve damage to his leg during the long siege of the Sudanese city of el-Fasher because he could not get medicine for his diabetes.

The 62-year-old walks with a heavy limp, but he was so panicked when fighters from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) finally captured the city in the western Darfur region, he felt no pain as he ran.

“The morning the RSF came there were bullets, many bullets, and explosives going off,” he says.

“People were out of control [with fear], they ran out of their houses, and everyone ran in different directions, the father, the son, the daughter – running.”

The fall of el-Fasher after an 18-month siege is a particularly brutal chapter in Sudan’s civil war.

The BBC has travelled to a tent camp in northern Sudan set up in army-controlled territory to hear first-hand the stories of those who escaped. The team was monitored by the authorities throughout the visit.

The RSF has been fighting the regular army since April 2023 when a power struggle between them erupted into war.

Taking over el-Fasher was a major victory for the paramilitary group, pushing the army out of its last foothold in Darfur.

But evidence of mass atrocities has drawn international condemnation and focused greater American attention on trying to end the conflict.

Warning: This report contains details that some readers may find distressing.

We found Mr Ali wandering around the camp, located in the desert about 770km (480 miles) north-east of el-Fasher, near the town of al-Dabbah.

He was trying to register his family for a tent.

“They [RSF fighters] were shooting at the people – the elderly, the civilians, with live ammunition, they would empty their guns on them,” he told us.

“Some of the RSF came with their cars. If they saw someone was still breathing, they drove over them.”

Mr Ali said he ran when he could, crawling along the ground or hiding when the threat got too close. He managed to get to the village of Gurni, a few kilometres from el-Fasher.

Gurni was the first stop for many who fled the city, including Mohammed Abbaker Adam, a local official in the nearby Zamzam camp for displaced people.

Mr Adam retreated to el-Fasher when Zamzam was overrun by the RSF in April, and left the day before they captured the city in October.

He grew a white beard to make himself look older, hoping that it would lead to more lenient treatment.

“The road here was full of death,” he said.

“They shot some people directly in front of us and then carried them and threw them far away. And on the road, we saw dead bodies out in the open, unburied. Some had lain there for two or three days.”

“So many people are scattered around,” he added. “We don’t know where they are.”

Some of those who did not take the long trek to al-Dabbah made it to a humanitarian hub in Tawila, some 70km from el-Fasher.

Others crossed into Chad. But the UN says less than half of the 260,000 people estimated to have been in the city before it fell have been accounted for.

Aid agencies believe many people did not get very far – unable to escape because of danger, or detention, or the cost of buying their way out.

Mr Adam said the fighters also raped women, corroborating widespread accounts of sexual violence.

“They would take a woman behind a tree, or take her far from us, out of sight, so you wouldn’t see with your own eyes,” he said.

“But you would hear her shout: ‘Help me, help me.’ And she would come and say: ‘They raped me.'”

There are mostly women in the camp, and many do not want to be identified to protect those left behind.

One 19-year-old woman told us that RSF fighters at a checkpoint took a girl from the group she was travelling with, and they had to leave her behind.

“I was scared,” she said. “When they took her out of the car at the checkpoint, I was afraid that at every checkpoint they would take a girl. But they just took her, and that was it until we got here.”

She had travelled here with her younger sister and brother. Her father, a soldier, had been killed in battle. Her mother was not in el-Fasher when it fell.

So the three siblings escaped the city on foot with their grandmother, but she died before they reached Gurni, leaving them to carry on alone.

“We hadn’t taken enough water because we didn’t know the distance was so far,” said the young woman.

“We walked and walked and my grandmother passed out. I thought it might be lack of food or water.

“I checked her pulse, but she didn’t wake up, so I found a doctor in a nearby village. He came and said: ‘Your grandmother has given you her soul.’ I was trying to keep myself together because of my sister and brother, but I didn’t know how I would tell my mother.”

They were all particularly worried about their 15-year-old brother because the RSF suspected that fleeing men had fought with the army.

The boy described his ordeal at one checkpoint when all the young men were taken out of the vehicles.

“The RSF interrogated us for hours in the sun,” he explained. “They said we were soldiers – some of the older ones probably were.

“The RSF fighters stood over us and circled around us, whipping us and threatening us with their guns. I lost hope and told them: ‘Whatever you want to do to me, do it.'”

In the end they let him go – after his 13-year-old sister told them her father was dead, and he was her only brother. They were reunited with their mother in the camp at al-Dabbah.

Many people describe the RSF separating the old men and women from the fighting-age men.

That happened to Abdullah Adam Mohamed in Gurni, tearing him away from his three little girls – aged two, four and six. The perfume seller had been looking after them since his wife was killed in shelling four months ago.

“I gave my daughters to the women [travelling with us],” he told the BBC. “Then the RSF brought big vehicles, and we [the men] were scared they were going to forcibly recruit us. So some of us ran and escaped into the neighbourhood.

“All night, I was thinking, how am I going to find my children again? I’ve lost so many people already – I was afraid I’d lose them too.”

Mr Mohamed escaped, but others did not. Mr Ali said he saw from a distance the RSF open fire on a group of men.

“They killed the men, they didn’t kill the women, but the men were all shot,” he told the BBC. “There were a lot dead and we ran away.”

Mr Ali and Mr Adam left Gurni on donkeys, travelling by night to the next village, Tur’rah.

Mr Mohamed also made it to Tur’rah, where he was reunited with his girls. From there they took vehicles for the long drive to al-Dabbah.

Many arrived at the camp empty handed. They had left the city carrying almost nothing and had to pay to get through checkpoints.

“The RSF fighters stripped us of everything we had: money, phones, even our nice clothes,” Mr Adam said. “At each stop they would make you call your relatives to transfer money to your mobile phone account before they let you move on to the next checkpoint.”

The RSF told the BBC it rejected accusations of systematic abuses against civilians.

“The specific allegations raised – looting, killings, sexual violence, or mistreatment of civilians – do not reflect our directives,” said Dr Ibrahim Mukhayer, an adviser to the leader of RSF, Gen Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.

“Any RSF member proven responsible for wrongdoing will be held fully accountable.”

He said the group believed the allegations of widespread atrocities were part of a politically motivated media campaign against them by what he called Islamist elements within Sudan’s military-led administration.

The RSF has published videos to try and reshape the narrative, showing its officers greeting people fleeing el-Fasher, trucks bringing in humanitarian aid, and medical centres being re-opened.

Mr Mohamed told the BBC that RSF foot soldiers were more brutal when their officers were not present, while Mr Adam dismissed what he described as attempts by the paramilitary group to improve its image.

“They have this strategy,” he said. “They will gather 10 or 15 people, give us water and film us like they’re treating us nicely.

“Once the cameras are gone, they will start beating us, treating us very badly and take everything we have.”

Earlier this year the US determined that the RSF had committed genocide in Darfur.

But the Sudanese armed forces and its allied militias have also been accused of atrocities, including targeting civilians suspected of supporting the RSF, and indiscriminately shelling residential areas.

This particularly brutal chapter in Sudan’s devastating war has drawn US President Donald Trump’s attention. He has promised to get more directly involved in ongoing US efforts to broker a ceasefire.

For those who escaped el-Fasher, that seems a distant prospect. They have been broken again and again by this conflict and have no idea what will come next.

But they are resilient. Mr Ali had not heard about Trump’s sudden interest, he had been chasing officials to get permission to stay in the camp in a tent where, he says, “we can live and rest”.

Renegotiate Zipline contract, don’t terminate it – Ibrahim Adjei to gov’t

0

Ibrahim Adjei, a former Assistant Secretary at the Office of former President Akufo-Addo, has urged the government to renegotiate its contract with medical drone delivery company Zipline rather than terminate it, describing the service as essential and capable of being improved through better terms.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, December 1, he argued that the focus should be on securing value for money, not ending a system that has proven useful in emergency healthcare delivery.

He said that instead of completely discarding the partnership, the government should return to the negotiation table.

According to him, renegotiation offers the government an opportunity to review the cost of Zipline’s operations and ensure more efficient service delivery.

“What Mahama Ayariga should do is to negotiate with Zipline for the cost of the service to get better terms, because it is a business,” he said.

Mr Adjei also dismissed suggestions that maintaining Zipline’s operations creates a monopoly in the drone delivery sector. He noted that the model exists in countries like Rwanda and China and advised the government to encourage local entrepreneurs to invest in similar medical delivery technologies.

“Why not encourage Ghanaians to also enter this sector of medical health delivery? Nobody is saying that Zipline should have a monopoly. There is a lot of investment in this space, as is being replicated in Rwanda, China and other countries,” he said.

His comments follow a demand by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga for the government to immediately terminate the Zipline contract, describing it as a “total waste” of public resources.

Mr. Ayariga made the call after the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, asked the Leader of Government Business to summon the Health Minister to brief Parliament on plans to revive Zipline operations at three centres that have been shut down.

The shutdowns were triggered by the government’s GH₵175 million debt owed to the company, which has severely hampered its ability to deliver essential medicines to underserved communities.

Addressing Parliament, Mr Ayariga insisted that the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is capable of procuring its own drones and operating a parallel system without relying on Zipline.

Veteran Ghanaian actor Jojo Mills-Robertson, famed for his role in Efie Wura, was overcome with grief as he bid a final farewell to his son, Francis Mills-Robertson, during an emotional burial service held at the Dansoman Keep Fit Park on Saturday.

Francis, 38, passed away on November 2, 2025, after a brief illness at the Dansoman Polyclinic.

A heartbreaking moment unfolded when the devastated actor, standing beside his son’s casket, lamented that his years of struggle now felt meaningless. With a trembling voice, he expressed the pain no parent wishes to bear, stating that he had hoped his son would be the one to bury him, not the reverse.

The emotional scene left many mourners in tears, marking one of the most sorrowful chapters in the life of the celebrated actor.

The funeral service, which ran from dawn until late afternoon, drew family members, close friends and sympathizers from across the entertainment industry.

Following the service, Francis was laid to rest at the Winneba Cemetery.

Ghanaian Stars Shine Across Europe Despite Mixed Team Results

Ghanaian footballers delivered impressive individual performances across European leagues over the weekend, with several players finding the net and creating crucial goals even as their teams experienced contrasting fortunes. The Black Stars contingent demonstrated their growing influence in competitive matches from England to the Czech Republic.

Prince Kwabena Adu continued his scoring streak in the Czech Fortuna Liga, netting for Viktoria Plzen in their victory over FK Mlada Boleslav on Sunday. The forward’s goal helped secure all three points for his club, extending his impressive run of form that has marked his debut season in Czech football. His consistent performances have caught attention and earned him recognition as one of the emerging talents from Ghana playing abroad.

In the English Championship, Amankwah Forson announced his return from injury in spectacular fashion. The Norwich City midfielder marked his first start since recovering by scoring a brilliant curling strike in their victory over Queens Park Rangers at Carrow Road on Saturday. The goal came late in the first half after excellent build up play from teammate Joshua Sargent, who teed up Forson to curl home confidently and seal the points for the Canaries. The strike represented his first competitive goal for Norwich since January, providing a significant boost as the club pushes for stronger Championship positioning.

Norwich had opened scoring through Emiliano Marcondes inside nine minutes, but Queens Park Rangers equalized almost immediately via Rumarn Burrell. The hosts regained their advantage when Senegalese defender Amadou Salif Mbengue scored an own goal under pressure before Forson’s moment of magic put the result beyond doubt. The midfielder’s performance highlighted his technical quality and importance to Norwich’s promotion ambitions.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku maintained his productive form for Leicester City despite his team suffering a disappointing defeat. The winger registered an assist in Leicester’s home loss to Sheffield United at the King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon, setting up Stephy Mavididi to reduce the deficit after the Foxes fell behind early. Sheffield United had raced into a commanding lead through goals from Thomas Cannon and Jairo Riedewald within the opening four minutes, with Sydie Peck adding a third to cement the victory for the visitors.

Issahaku played the full duration of the match and created several dangerous opportunities, continuing his explosive start to the Championship campaign. The former Sporting Lisbon player has now contributed six goal involvements in recent matches, establishing himself as a key creative force for Leicester as they aim for an immediate return to the Premier League following relegation last season.

Mohammed Kudus produced a moment of brilliance for Tottenham Hotspur, scoring a spectacular volley in their Premier League defeat to Fulham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening. The Ghana international struck his second league goal of the season in the 59th minute, controlling a loose ball from Lucas Bergvall before unleashing a thunderous strike into the top corner that temporarily gave Spurs hope of mounting a comeback.

Tottenham had fallen behind early through quickfire goals from Kenny Tete and Harry Wilson within the opening six minutes. Despite Kudus pulling one back with his superb finish, the hosts could not find an equalizer and slumped to their third consecutive defeat across all competitions. The result left Spurs sitting uncomfortably in mid table, just one point ahead of their opponents despite the quality shown by individual performers like Kudus.

The Ghanaian midfielder’s goal showcased his technical ability and attacking instincts, demonstrating why he remains an important creative outlet for Thomas Frank’s struggling side. His volley has been praised as one of the standout strikes of the Premier League weekend, highlighting his capacity to produce moments of magic even when his team faces adversity.

Beyond the headline makers, several other Ghanaian players featured prominently for their clubs across European leagues. Douglas Owusu scored his fifth goal of the Serbian Superliga season to help Radnik Surdulica secure victory over TSC Backa Topola, while Kwaku Karikari found the net for Zeleznicar Pancevo in Serbia’s top flight. Antoine Semenyo delivered another strong performance for Bournemouth despite their defeat to Sunderland, continuing his impressive form following his return from injury.

The weekend’s results reflected both the individual quality of Ghana’s overseas players and the competitive challenges their teams face in respective leagues. While team outcomes varied significantly, the consistent contributions from Ghanaian talent underscored their value to European clubs and reinforced their status as some of African football’s most exciting prospects.

These performances come as Ghana prepares for upcoming international fixtures, with several of these players expected to feature prominently in Black Stars squads. Their club form will be closely monitored by national team selectors seeking to build on recent results and strengthen Ghana’s position in World Cup qualifying campaigns.

Government Credits Reforms for Ending Power Crisis at Energy Awards

Energy
Electricity

Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan Mensah, has hailed Ghana’s recent progress in stabilizing power supply, crediting targeted reforms and strong industry collaboration for turning around the sector after the challenges of late 2024.

Speaking at the 9th Ghana Energy Awards on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Mensah recalled the 700 megawatt shortfall recorded in December 2024, which triggered widespread load shedding across the country. He noted that government led interventions across generation, transmission, distribution and financing had restored energy security and supported both economic and industrial growth.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that months of uninterrupted power supply signal a marked improvement from the instability experienced last year. He stated that through targeted reforms, the administration has restored energy security and supported economic and industrial growth, adding that government remains committed to sustaining these gains while advancing long term goals of energy security, economic stability and sustainable industrial expansion.

Mensah stressed that effective energy sector management goes beyond infrastructure, requiring the dedication of the professionals and investors driving its growth. He praised the collective effort of stakeholders in turning around what had become a critical national challenge.

This year’s event, held under the theme “Repositioning the Energy Sector as a Pillar of National Development,” celebrated achievements across the industry and gathered sector leaders, policymakers and international stakeholders. The ceremony drew industry leaders, regulators, chief executives and professionals for an evening dedicated to celebrating transformational leadership.

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, served as Special Guest of Honour, reinforcing the government’s commitment to clean energy, local content and sector reforms. His presence underscored the administration’s dedication to positioning the energy sector at the heart of Ghana’s socio economic transformation.

Government initiatives highlighted at the ceremony include the addition of more than 200 megawatts of solar power, new mini grid systems supplying electricity to communities in Ada, the rollout of smart solar streetlights nationwide, and continued progress toward nuclear energy development. These projects represent significant steps toward diversifying Ghana’s energy mix and reducing dependence on traditional thermal generation.

Financial reforms, such as expansion of the Petroleum Commission’s Local Content Fund, are expected to boost Ghanaian participation in the oil and gas sector. The reforms aim to strengthen domestic participation and ensure that more Ghanaians benefit directly from the country’s petroleum resources.

Chairman of the Awarding Panel, Kwame Jantuah, underscored the role of independent assessment in driving sector accountability and innovation. He noted that independent institutions like the Ghana Energy Awards help assess sector performance and maintain accountability, emphasizing that such platforms are vital for promoting excellence and encouraging healthy competition within the industry.

The 2025 edition featured 26 competitive and six honorary award categories, with new recognitions for energy sector reformers, operational resilience and emerging female leaders. The expanded categories reflect the evolving priorities within Ghana’s energy landscape and recognize diverse contributions to sector development.

Flagship honours included Energy Personality of the Year for both male and female categories, Chief Executive of the Year for Power and Petroleum sectors, Chief Green Trailblazer Award, Emerging Female Leader in Energy Award, Energy Signature Award, Energy Sector Operational Resilience Award and Energy Advocate of the Year.

The event attracted global attention, including participation from Nishant Kumar Sharma, Executive Co-Chair of the World Energy Council’s Studies Committee on the Energy Trilemma, who shared insights on Ghana’s energy transformation within the context of global best practices. His presence highlighted international recognition of Ghana’s efforts to address energy sector challenges.

The nomination window, which ran from September 9 to October 31, 2025, received an impressive 500 plus submissions, including a remarkable number of first time entrants. This reflected growing national interest in celebrating excellence within the energy sector and the expanding scope of stakeholder engagement.

Upholding its reputation for integrity, transparency and due diligence, the Ghana Energy Awards implemented a rigorous multi stage evaluation process. The Secretariat, in close collaboration with the distinguished Awarding Panel, conducted detailed reviews, validation exercises and nationwide site visitations to authenticate submissions and ensure fairness in the shortlisting process.

Organized by the Energy Media Group, the awards are endorsed by the Ministry of Energy, allied agencies and the World Energy Council Ghana, with independent validation by Forvis Mazars and Casely Brooke Law Firm. The endorsements underscore the credibility and significance of the awards within Ghana’s energy ecosystem.

The December 2024 power crisis had raised concerns about Ghana’s energy security and the sustainability of industrial operations. Businesses and households across the country experienced frequent outages that disrupted productivity and daily life. The government’s subsequent interventions, including procurement of emergency power and infrastructure upgrades, have largely resolved the immediate challenges.

However, energy stakeholders continue to emphasize the need for long term structural reforms to prevent future crises. These include accelerating renewable energy deployment, strengthening transmission infrastructure, improving revenue collection in the distribution segment, and addressing legacy debts within the energy sector value chain.

The successful turnaround of the power situation has been welcomed by industry players and the public, though experts caution that sustained commitment to reforms will be crucial to maintaining stability. The energy sector remains central to Ghana’s economic transformation agenda, with reliable electricity supply serving as a foundation for industrialization and improved quality of life.

Bawumia sweeps Eastern Region as Akwatia, Kade and Akroso declare strong support

0

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia continues to attract emphatic endorsements in the Eastern Region as he intensifies his campaign tour ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries.

For nearly a week, Dr Bawumia has been meeting delegates and party faithful across the region. On Sunday, the momentum grew even stronger as he toured four constituencies—Kade, Akwatia, Akroso Asene Manso, and Lower West Akim—where constituency executives, MPs and former parliamentary candidates publicly declared their support.

Party leaders in the constituencies described the growing endorsement as “the will of the people,” insisting that the former Vice President remains the strongest candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.

Akwatia endorses with higher targets

At Akwatia, Dr Bawumia received a rousing welcome. The constituency chairman assured him of overwhelming support, predicting an even stronger showing in the upcoming primaries.

“Two years ago, we gave you nearly 68%. No one coerced us to vote for you. And now, when we look at your commitment, your message and your hard work, I believe the 68% you had in 2023 will even increase to 86% by January 31,” he said.

The NPP parliamentary candidate for the recent Akwatia by-election also pledged the constituency’s full backing, noting that Dr Bawumia offered them “immense support” during the by-election.

Former Akwatia MP Ama Sey added her voice, urging delegates not to shift support away from Dr Bawumia.

“Ghanaians don’t normally like change… So I am appealing to all of you not to be deceived and change. Let us continue to support Dr Bawumia,” she said. She added that nationwide feedback shows strong grassroots demand for Bawumia as flagbearer.

Kade declares full support

In Kade, delegates greeted the former Vice President with chants of solidarity. The constituency chairman said the support for Bawumia was longstanding and unwavering.

“Kade Constituency is always with Bawumia… The constituency is already behind Bawumia,” he stressed, urging polling station executives, coordinators and elders to vote massively on January 31.

Asene Manso Akroso rallies behind Bawumia

A similar scene played out in Asene Manso Akroso, where Constituency Chairman Kojo Effah led supporters in chanting “Bawumia no change!”

“What we want to tell you is that by the grace of the Almighty God, you will be victorious,” he said. “We will continue to work very hard for you… so that by the grace of God, you will win and become the President of Ghana.”

As Dr Bawumia edges closer to the NPP’s January 31 primaries, endorsements such as these suggest growing grassroots confidence in his bid to lead the party into the 2028 elections.

10 petitioners appeal to President Mahama to remove Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, EC Chair Jean Menssa and 2 deputies –

0

President John Dramani Mahama has received 10 petitions for the removal of two heads of public institutions and two deputies appointed under Article 70 of the Constitution.

The institutions are the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (SP).

Seven petitions were filed against the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa, and her two deputies, Dr Bossman Eric Asare, who is in charge of Corporate, and Samuel Tettey, in charge of Operations.

Three other petitions are against the removal of the SP, Kissi Agyebeng.

Checks by the Daily Graphic indicate that the various petitions have been forwarded to the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.

Article 70(2) of the Constitution states that “The President shall, acting on the advice of the Council of State, appoint the Chairman, Deputy Chairmen and other members of the Electoral Commission.”

The Chairperson of the EC and the deputies have the same conditions of service as those of Justices of the superior courts — the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal and the High Court — and so are their removal processes.

While the Chairperson of the EC has the same terms and conditions of service as a Justice of the Court of Appeal, the two Deputy Chairmen of the Commission have the same terms and conditions of service as are applicable to a Justice of the High Court.

Removal of EC chair

According to Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, a Justice of the Superior Court or a Chairman of the Regional Tribunal shall not be removed from office except for stated misbehaviour or incompetence or on ground of inability to perform the functions of his office arising from infirmity of body or mind.

The second clause provides that a Justice of the Superior Court of Judicature may only be removed in accordance with the procedure specified in Article 146(3).

“If the President receives a petition for the removal of a Justice of a Superior Court other than the Chief Justice or for the removal of the Chairman of a Regional Tribunal, he shall refer the petition to the Chief Justice, who shall determine whether there is a prima facie case.

“Where the Chief Justice decides that there is a prima facie case, he shall set up a committee consisting of three Justices of the Superior Courts or Chairmen of the Regional Tribunals or both, appointed by the Judicial Council and two other persons who are not members of the Council of State, nor members of Parliament, nor lawyers, and who shall be appointed by the Chief Justice on the advice of the Council of State.

also provides that the committee appointed shall investigate the complaint and shall make its recommendations to the Chief Justice who shall forward it to the President.

Article 146 also provides that all proceedings under the article shall be held in camera, and the Justice or Chairman against whom the petition is made is entitled to be heard in his defence by himself or by a lawyer or other expert of his choice.

“The President shall, in each case, act in accordance with the recommendations of the committee,” clause nine of the same article further provides.

Special Prosecutor

Section 15 of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959) deals with the removal of the SP, with timelines.

Similar to that of the EC, the SP “shall not be removed from office except for (a) stated misbehaviour or incompetence; (b) incapacity to perform the functions of the Office by reason of infirmity of body or mind; (c) wilful violation of the Official Oath or Oath of Secrecy; (d) conduct which (i) brings or is likely to bring the Office of the Special Prosecutor into disrepute, ridicule or contempt; or(ii) is prejudicial or inimical to the economy or security of the State.

A person who seeks to remove the SP from office must submit a petition to the President, who must, within seven days, refer the petition to the Chief Justice who shall, within 30 days, determine whether there is a prima facie case.

Where a prima facie case is determined, the CJ shall within 14 days set up a committee similar to that of the removal of any of the heads of constitutional bodies appointed by the President.

The committee is duty bound to investigate the matter within 90 days and make its recommendation to the President through the Chief Justice.

The President then has no choice but enjoined to act in accordance with the recommendations of the committee.

ECOWAS, TradeMark Africa Intensify Efforts to Dismantle Trade Barriers Along Abidjan-Lagos Corridor

0

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in collaboration with TradeMark Africa (TMA), has intensified efforts to address long-standing trade barriers along the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor, one of West Africa’s busiest and most economically significant trade routes.

At a three-day SPS/TBT forum held in Accra, officials, private sector actors, and development partners explored ways to strengthen the standards, quality, and regulatory environment governing cross-border movement of goods, particularly food and agricultural products.

The Director of Strategy and Partnerships at TradeMark Africa, Anthe Vrijlandt, highlighted that despite regional commitments to free movement, traders still face technical barriers that slow trade and increase costs. She explained that challenges often relate to food safety and plant health inspections, which vary from country to country.

TMA and ECOWAS are working to design practical solutions to ease restrictions and promote predictable trade flows. Ms. Vrijlandt cited a recent benchmarking mission to East Africa that exposed West African officials to successful systems that could be locally adapted. She emphasized that the forum’s goal is to develop a concrete action plan with measurable outcomes, not discussions that end without implementation.

Incidents where perishable goods, such as bananas, were held at borders for weeks due to unclear or duplicated checks were highlighted as examples of the urgent need for standardisation. Ms. Vrijlandt explained two key approaches to reduce duplication: accepting results from accredited national laboratories across the region, and harmonizing standards so that once a product is tested in one country, it is accepted by all.

Mr. Midaye Koissi, Principal Programme Officer for Quality Standards at ECOWAS, added that the lack of harmonized standards remains a major obstacle to regional trade. Products tested in one country are often retested upon arrival in another, causing delays and additional costs for traders. ECOWAS has established a technical committee comprising representatives from all member states to develop regional standards. Once approved, these standards ensure that goods tested and certified in one country are recognized in others.

Chief Executive of the Chamber of Agribusiness, Mr. Anthony Morrison, highlighted the private sector’s critical role in cross-border trade. Businesses must comply with both national and regional standards, including rules of origin under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS). Meeting these standards allows agribusinesses to benefit from increased market penetration, improved product quality, and enhanced competitiveness.

“With more than 600 approved standards across ECOWAS and the African Union, producers must remain committed to meeting quality benchmarks,” Mr. Morrison emphasized, underscoring the importance of public-private collaboration in fostering seamless regional trade.

Vin Diesel ends feud with Dwayne Johnson

Award-winning actors Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson had a public feud that started in 2016 and eventually ended in 2023.

It’s also quite clear that the pair’s relationship after they ended their feud remains healthy, as Diesel, in a lengthy Instagram post on Tuesday, praised Johnson for his role in The Smashing Machine movie.

Released in October 2025, the biographical sports drama film sees Johnson, 53, portraying mixed martial artist and UFC legend Mark Kerr, who is friends with Diesel, 58.

“One of the greatest gifts in life isn’t something you can buy, it’s the relationships forged along the way,” Diesel wrote. “I wanted to take a moment to talk about ‘The Smashing Machine.’ What most people don’t realize is that Mark Kerr was one of the first friends I made when I moved from New York to California. We hit it off immediately, and the reason is simple: he is genuinely one of the kindest, most warm-hearted people you will ever meet.”

The Fast & Furious star also revealed that Kerr, 56, actually trained him for the first XXX movie, adding that the UFC legend, in a “beautiful way,” was “there at the beginning of my action career. That’s the kind of friend he’s been from day one.”

Diesel then went ahead to shower praises on Johnson, with whom he has co-starred in multiple Fast & Furious movies. “And let me celebrate Dwayne,” he wrote.

“People don’t understand what it takes to uphold a global perception every single day. I remember asking our global family who they’d love to see me work with, and a woman named Jan left a comment saying her dream was for me to collaborate with Dwayne,” Diesel added.

“What followed became one of the most dynamic pairings in cinema, two strong personalities who pushed each other and created something unforgettable. When he stepped into Hobbs, he did it with full commitment and left an indelible mark on Universal’s character hall of fame.”

Diesel additionally touched on Kerr’s UFC Hall of Fame induction. “Watching Mark Kerr get inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame because his story was finally told was such a proud moment,” he said.

“This is a man who would often tell me about the kids he was teaching to wrestle, to fight, to take ownership of their lives usually for no money at all.”

He concluded: “The fact that Mark Coleman was included in the film was such a treat, and Bas Rutten’s performance was stellar. Mark Kerr is so deserving of this moment… and Dwayne really did it… He brought us back in time and shined doing it. Proud of you both.”

Diesel and Johnson’s public feud stemmed from the pair having creative differences over the Fast & Furious franchise. The feud started after Johnson took to Instagram in 2016 to condemn some of the stars who featured in the movie alongside him, though he did not mention their names. Johnson later deleted that post.

In June 2023, Johnson ultimately announced that they had resolved their differences.

District Assemblies cited in Auditor-General’s report may lose points in PFMCLT

0

The Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) has called for stronger accountability measures as stakeholders recommend that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) cited in the Auditor-General’s Report should lose points in the upcoming 2025 Public Financial Management Compliance League Table (PFMCLT).

This recommendation emerged during a multi-stakeholder technical meeting convened by CLGA to review and validate the draft 2025 PFMCLT Assessment Tool.

The meeting brought together key institutions across the Public Financial Management (PFM) chain and civil society organisations.

Stakeholders raised concerns that some Assemblies continue to record significant financial irregularities, yet the current scoring framework does not adequately penalise them.

It was therefore strongly proposed that MMDAs cited in the Auditor-General’s Report for misappropriation, non-compliance or other financial infractions should lose marks under the Auditing Indicator.

This, they argued, would strengthen deterrence, promote responsible use of public resources, and improve accountability to citizens.

Participants also highlighted inconsistencies in quarterly reporting to the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC).

Many MMDAs consistently fail to submit mandatory quarterly performance reports, a situation that undermines planning effectiveness and national data reliability.

It was recommended that Assemblies that default should lose points under the Planning Indicator to reinforce compliance with regulatory reporting obligations.

On procurement, stakeholders proposed reforms to ensure that the PFMCLT promotes local economic development.

They suggested that Requests for Quotations (RFQs) should give priority to sourcing from local firms, while National Competitive Tendering (NCT) and other methods should be assessed in ways that encourage transparency, value for money and inclusiveness.

The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the PFMCLT as a national accountability tool that objectively measures MMDA compliance with PFM laws, regulations, and best practices.

The 2025 edition is expected to incorporate these recommendations to ensure the tool remains robust, credible, and reflective of the realities within Ghana’s local governance system.

CLGA reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with state institutions and development partners to enhance transparency, strengthen PFM systems, and deepen accountability at the sub-national level.

Focus on fulfilling economic promises – Nana Kay to government

Aspiring National Organiser for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah Aspiring National Organiser for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah

Aspiring National Organiser for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, popularly known as Nana Kay, has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to refrain from using state institutions for political intimidation.

Instead, he urged the ruling party to focus on delivering the economic transformation it promised Ghanaians.

Nana Kay, a member of the Communications and Elections Directorate, noted that despite government claims of cedi stabilisation, the improvement is not being felt by ordinary citizens.

He made these remarks while reacting to the Tamale High Court’s order for a rerun of the constituency election.

According to him, the court exceeded the reliefs sought by the NDC, alleging that it granted additional, unrequested reliefs “to appease the paymasters.”

Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, Nana Kay argued that the NDC is drifting from its core mandate and its commitment to maintaining economic stability.

He expressed confidence that the NPP will retain the constituency seat even if the court-ordered rerun is conducted.

He further reiterated the position of Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, describing the court’s decision as unfortunate and suggesting that it forms part of a broader agenda to please the government.

While reaffirming the NPP’s respect for the ruling, he stressed that the party “totally disagrees” with it and has resolved to file an appeal.

“This is unfortunate. The intimidation is one too many, and we must deal with it. I totally agree with the Majority Leader that it seems they are working for their paymasters. We know for a fact that he is the sitting Member of Parliament, and nothing can change that,” he stated.

Nana Kay cautioned the government to “tread cautiously,” citing what he described as “serious scandals.” He referenced reports of students seeking admission to senior high schools allegedly being asked to pay GH₵40,000 or more.

“Are they going in search of jobs? If so, then why are they being made to pay GH₵40,000?” he questioned, adding that the intimidation of opposition party members remains a major concern.

“They should be careful. If they think they have the supermajority and can do anything they want, they should be careful because power will certainly change hands.”

He stressed that the country is not operating under normal circumstances, pointing to a recent Afrobarometer report indicating that over 60 percent of respondents preferred military rule to civilian rule.

Given this, he insisted the government “must tread with caution in how it is intimidating opposition members.”

Finally, he stated that the NPP will not withdraw from the rerun, expressing confidence that the party will emerge victorious.

Landman season two is blasted by critics and fans for Demi Moore and other female stars’ ‘annoying’ roles

0

The newest season of Taylor Sheridan’s latest Western drama has been sparking fan interest in recent weeks, and now critics are having their say.

The Billy Bob Thornton–starring series has been receiving surprisingly positive reviews compared to some of Sheridan’s other post-Yellowstone shows, but one aspect of the series seems to have rubbed both fans and detractors the wrong way: its female characters.

Several reviewers took Landman’s second season to task for its handling of the major female roles, with special derision coming in for parts played by Demi Moore and Ali Larter, though the derision was reserved for the writing, which is exclusively credited to Sheridan.

Thornton, who recently called his three-year marriage to Angelina Jolie part of the ‘greatest times’ of his life, stars on Landman as Tommy Norris, a top executive at a fictional oil company who is tasked with negotiating the mineral rights for land it plans to drill on.

Writing for Slate, Rebecca Onion outlined what she described as ‘Landman’s woman problem.’

She wrote that Moore’s character Cami, the wife of Tommy’s late colleague (played by Jon Hamm), now has ‘actual lines and scenes,’ but the other major female stars have been given substandard material to work with.

Onion singled out Tommy’s ex-wife Angela Norris (played by Larter) and his daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) as weak links in the latest season because of Sheridan’s alleged habit of forcing them to spout out his ‘culture-war rant[s] … disguised as a scene between characters on a television show.’

To make matters worse, she accused Sheridan of writing Ainsley as a nitwit in a scene in which she cluelessly tries to impress a hard-nosed college admissions officer (who isn’t treated with any more sympathy than Ainsley).

Slate’s review went on to criticize Larter’s character for being cartoonishly moody and reactive compared to Tommy, who is portrayed as being cool and collected.

Despite his sometimes cruel comments about Angela, she and Tommy get remarried in the second season.

Salon’s Melane McFarland was more positive on the new season, but she wrote that, in the universe of Sheridan’s TV shows, ‘women are divided between ball-busters with predatory business instincts that match or exceed those of their male peers, or expensive sexual accessories.’

She wrote that the women of Landman are further divided by hair color, ‘because in Sheridan’s Texas, God made blondes to drive rich old men into poverty,’ whereas brunettes ‘get things done.’

McFarland also noted the portrayal of Tommy’s daughter Ainsley as a moron, joking that she ‘would lose a grade-school spelling bee to a bag of hair extensions.’

Ultimately, she wrote the the show amounts to trashy fun, even if it fails at being exceptional television.

Writing for RogerEbert.com, Clint Worthington wrote that the women of Landman are both its ‘greatest strength and weakness.’

Worthington accused Angela and Ainsley of being showcases for Sheridan’s ‘psychosexual hangups,’ and he wrote that many of their scenes could play as ‘top-tier comedy’ if the characters weren’t so ‘regressive.’

By contrast, Decider determined that the second season of Landman was worth streaming partially because of the greater presence of its female characters this time around.

Collider was also mildly optimistic about the second season based on its first three episodes, though critic Jeff Ewing noted that Larter and Randolph’s characters don’t meaningfully ‘evolve.’

In a relatively positive review for The New Yorker, Kyle Chayka dubs Larter’s character a ‘Manic Pixie Dream MILF’ and notes that she has ‘many hit-or-miss one-liners’ contrasting with the show’s more naturalistic dialogue.

In a modestly positive review for the Houston Chronicle, Cary Darling suggested that Larter and Randolph’s characters are ‘meant to be send-ups of stereotypes about status-obsessed, brand-conscious Texas women.’

However, they instead come across a ‘one-dimensional cartoon characters, not people,’ with Larter’s character being particularly ‘underwritten.’

Accept Asantehene’s verdict to restore peace – Garu MP

0

The Member of Parliament for Garu, Dr Thomas Anaba, has appealed to all factions involved in the protracted Bawku conflict to accept the ruling of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as the final mediation process scheduled to conclude on Monday, December 1, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace.

He lamented the extensive loss of lives, property, and resources over the decades, stressing that peace remains the only acceptable path forward for the people of Bawku.

The Asantehene, whom the government tasked to help find a lasting solution to the Bawku chieftaincy crisis, is expected to deliver his final ruling today—an outcome many hope will bring an end to years of tension and violence in the area.

Speaking to Citi News on Sunday, November 30, 2025, Dr Anaba urged all stakeholders to embrace the Asantehene’s pronouncement in good faith and commit to restoring harmony in the Bawku enclave.

He emphasised that only unity and acceptance of the ruling will pave the way for sustainable development.

“There’s not much to expect but peace in Bawku. We have spent a whole lot of years, a lot of resources, time wasted, lives lost, and businesses destroyed because of this conflict. I know it’s not an easy task. President Nana Akufo-Addo handed it to the Asantehene to manage, and President John Mahama also came and recognised that he could manage it and left it for him to complete. He has handled it gently, step by step, and finally brought us to this point,” he said.

Dr Anaba added that the Asantehene’s ruling should serve as a new beginning for the area.

“What we are expecting is that his pronouncement will bring peace, so the government will take his recommendations and everybody will accept their implementation to the letter. We will all be happy with ourselves and live harmoniously in Bawku because we are already one people.

“We don’t have any real differences—just a small misunderstanding about ownership that has brought us this far,” he indicated.

He further prayed for a peaceful and successful resolution that would restore Bawku to its past glory of stability, vibrant commerce, and growth.

Fuel prices set to rise slightly from today, Dec 1

0

The price of petroleum products is expected to increase marginally at the pumps from today, December 1.

The projection was captured in the latest Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) outlook report, which guides the pricing decisions of oil marketing companies, as seen by JOYBUSINESS.

Projected Increase

The Price of Petrol is expected to increase between 1.97% -3.30%, bringing the pump price per litre to  GH¢12.91.

Diesel should also be increased between 2.85% -5.15 % potentially resulting in a litre at the pumps, going for GH¢13.37 per litre

That of Liquefied Petrol Gas (LPG ) should be increased by as much as 3.10%  per Kilogram,  which may lead to a kilogram going for GH¢13.80

Reasons

According to the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies, the increase has been influenced marginal increase in the price of finished petroleum products on the international market and the recent pressure on Ghana over the past two weeks.

Prices of Finished Petroleum products have been going up on the international market over the past weeks.

The data put together by the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies showed that Petrol increased by 1.26%, Diesel rose by  2.28 % and LPG edged up by0.07 %

Diesel prices are expected to rise further in the coming days, largely driven by uncertainties surrounding product availability.

COMAC also stated in its report that the cedi’s performance over the past two weeks had played a major role.

“The cedi depreciated marginally from GH¢10.94 to GH¢11.14, marking a 1.76 % depreciation,” the report added

Analysts say the recent pressure on the Ghana Cedi on rising corporate foreign Exchange demand and end-of-year pressures.

The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, Duncan Amoah, in a recent interview with JoyBusiness, noted that a favourable pricing outlook will depend on the performance of the Ghana cedi going forward.

The Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Sarpong, has committed the government to creating a simpler, more predictable and transparent tax system, announcing that significant reforms to income tax and Customs laws will take effect in 2026.

Speaking at the 65th Annual General Meeting of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Mr. Sarpong emphasised that tax simplicity is essential for fostering industrial growth and competitiveness, particularly within the flagship 24 hour economy initiative.

He explained that when tax laws and policies are clear, consistently applied and fair, businesses can plan, invest and innovate with confidence. The GRA boss pointed to recent comprehensive Value Added Tax (VAT) reforms captured in the 2026 budget as evidence of the shifted approach, which was shaped by consistent engagement with the business community.

Mr. Sarpong indicated that the 2027 Budget would feature major amendments to both the Income Tax Act and the Customs Act, with strong input from industry players to ensure transparency and predictability. He assured the audience of broader collaboration with industry to provide the conducive environment and stability businesses require.

The outgoing AGI president, Dr. Humphrey Kwesi Ayim Darke, acknowledged positive results from collaboration, listing several policy gains that have simplified the tax burden for local manufacturers. These include extending zero rated VAT on locally manufactured pesticides to 2028 and the abolishment of the COVID 19 Health Recovery Levy.

Emphasising the commitment to predictability, Mr. Sarpong clarified that the current focus is on deepening and strengthening taxes already in the tax laws while removing bottlenecks that do not support business growth. He stated that the government has been very deliberate to ensure that there are no new taxes involved.

The GRA boss said the government aims to leverage technology in simplifying the tax experience for businesses, announcing that a new Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS) would go live by March 2026. Mr. Sarpong explained the system will automate tax administration at a higher level, ensuring processes for complying with tax administration are made easier, more convenient and support the agenda of businesses. The system will reduce effort required for tax registration, payment and filing.

Further simplifying the tax system for importers, Mr. Sarpong confirmed the rollout of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system for Customs valuation, intended to replace manual processes which often take up to an hour per consignment. He argued this will eliminate human intervention and subjectivity, creating a fairer and more straightforward process for determining import duties.

50 Cent settles assault lawsuit before release of ‘Diddy documentary’ he produced

Days before the release of a Sean “Diddy” Combs documentary, 50 Cent has reached a settlement with a plaintiff who filed an assault lawsuit against him.

Per PEOPLE, the rapper and filmmaker, born Curtis Jackson III, was served with a civil complaint from the plaintiff Guadalupe de los Santos earlier this year.

The complaint stated that the alleged assault happened in Los Angeles in September 2024. De los Santos alleged that he was waiting at a traffic light when an SUV that Jackson was riding in approached him from the back.

De los Santos claimed that the “front passenger door” of Jackson’s SUV then “suddenly and forcefully opened, without warning or provocation, and struck [him] on his left side, knocking him and his scooter to the street.”

The plaintiff further claimed that “an occupant of the SUV, at Defendant’s Jackson’s direction, opened the door to intentionally strike him.”

De los Santos had asked the court to award him damages for assault, battery, intentional affliction of emotional distress, and negligence. He also asked for the amount to be decided at a trial.

The lawsuit was previously filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, but it was transferred to the United States District Court for the Central District of Florida in September.

A motion to dismiss the complaint was initially filed by Jackson and his attorneys, with a hearing scheduled for December 22. But the case was ultimately settled between the plaintiff and the defendant this month.

A November 25 motion that was filed stated that de los Santos and Jackson “reached an agreement in principle to resolve all claims” and were “in the process of drafting and executing the formal settlement agreement,” PEOPLE reported.

Jackson reached the settlement days before Netflix released a Sean “Diddy” Combs documentary that he produced. The four-part documentary, according to Netflix, will “lay out the story of a powerful, enterprising man and the gilded empire he built — as well as the underworld that lay just beneath its surface.”

Combs, 56, is serving his 50-month conviction at the Federal Correctional Institution, Fort Dix in New Jersey. The Bad Boy Records founder was handed the punishment after a jury found him guilty of prostitution-related charges. Judge Arun Subramanian also fined him $500,000 and ordered five years of supervised release at a hearing in Manhattan federal court on Friday, October 3.

Combs, who continues to maintain his innocence, had faced up to 20 years behind bars.

Some NDC MPs are suffering and they come to parliament with Uber – Afenyo-Markin alleges

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has alleged that a number of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament are facing financial hardship, with some reportedly relying on ride-hailing services such as Uber to make it to parliamentary sittings.

Speaking during an interview on Peace FM on November 28, 2025, the Effutu MP claimed that several NDC legislators, particularly those on the backbench and without appointments to public boards, were under economic strain.

‘Whoever thought Mahama could be president again? – Afenyo-Markin’s emotional message to the NPP

Afenyo-Markin stated that MPs from both sides of the House endure challenges but insisted that the situation was more pronounced among their colleagues in the NDC.

“Our brothers in the NDC, we are in Parliament with them and they are suffering. Some of them come to Parliament with Uber. Some of them are on the backbench and they are not on any board,” he said.

He noted that despite these challenges, NDC MPs exhibit patience and discipline, prioritising the long-term interest of their party.

“They are suffering but they have a common understanding that they have to take time for the party.”

Using the NDC’s example, Afenyo-Markin urged members of the opposition the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to exercise similar restraint and remain committed to party unity, even in difficult times.

According to him, political parties operate on long-term strategies and MPs and supporters alike must be willing to endure temporary hardship for wider organisational goals.

Confusion rocks GRIDCo as concerned stakeholders petition energy minister over alleged breaches

Minister of Energy, John Jinapor Minister of Energy, John Jinapor

A coalition of industry players calling itself Concerned Citizens and Stakeholders in the Power Sector has petitioned the Minister of Energy John Jinapor, raising serious red flags about what they describe as emerging governance irregularities at the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).

According to the group, the recent participation of GRIDCo’s Director of Legal, Monica Senanu, in Board meetings and high-level Board engagements despite the company already having an officially recognised Board Secretary, Ama Haywood Dadzie has sparked deep unease within the sector.

The petition, submitted this week, insists that Mrs. Senanu’s sudden appearance in Board activities “was never formally announced or justified” to staff, regulators, or the public.

The stakeholders argue that this development contradicts established governance practices in state-owned enterprises, where management executives are not expected to sit on Boards mandated to exercise oversight over them.

They describe the situation as a disturbing departure from long-standing principles designed to avoid conflicts of interest, strengthen transparency, and ensure clear accountability structures within critical national institutions.

The petition warns that altering leadership and oversight roles without official communication could weaken internal controls and create blurred lines of authority at a time when GRIDCo’s credibility and operational stability are crucial to national development.

“This deviation from established norms exposes GRIDCo to vulnerabilities in decision-making and undermines public trust,” the group stated, stressing that poor governance at the country’s primary power transmission utility poses risks “that extend far beyond the company to the entire nation.”

The stakeholders are urging the Ministry of Energy to act swiftly and provide urgent clarity on the following:

1. The current governance structure at GRIDCo

2. The legal and administrative basis for the Director of Legal’s participation in Board meetings

3. Why no formal communication was issued to justify the change

4. How government intends to preserve long-standing governance safeguards within the utility

Kevin Okyere and Springfield’s upstream investment must count for something

They further emphasised the need for the Ministry to step in to restore adherence to professional standards, insisting that Ghana cannot afford “quiet structural shifts” in one of its most strategic institutions.

The petition concludes with a strong caution: “GRIDCo must remain an institution anchored in professionalism and transparency. Any erosion of established oversight mechanisms endangers public assets and national stability.”

The group is calling for an immediate review of the situation, insisting that swift action is essential to protect the integrity of the country’s power sector and to maintain public confidence.

The former footy player, 37, shared a playful clip on Sunday night showing herself and a female friend dressing up in wedding gowns and staging a mock ceremony.

Moana looked radiant in a plunging white gown, strutting down a makeshift aisle and playfully hamming it up for the cameras.

Keeping with the friendship theme, the track Best Friend by Saweetie played over the footage.

‘Wow, talk about giving the audience what they want! Don’t change anything though!’ a second added.

‘You look great in that dress!’ a third chimed in.

The amusing post comes after Moana, who shares Svea, four, and Ahi, two, with her ex–wife Isabella Carlstrom, split from her girlfriend Maria Thattil earlier this year after an 18–month romance.

The pair had been the subject of split rumours for months after they did not spend the 2024 Christmas holidays together.

Speaking to News Corp in February, Maria denied the pair had separated, saying: ‘I’m not single. I’ve seen rumours… but that’s honestly all it is.’

‘We are good and excited for the year ahead. Excited for 2025 together and it’s going to be great. Nothing has come from us. We are investing in ourselves.’

However, just a week later, Confidential claimed the couple had ‘quietly split after several weeks of rumours of a break–up’.

While Moana and Maria did not officially confirm their separation at the time, they attended the Glamour on the Grid party in Albert Park separately in March.

When they were approached for comment, Maria confirmed they were no longer together and said there was ‘no bad blood’ between them.

‘We are on amazing terms and spent some of the evening together. All is well,’ she said.

The couple had been dating for several months and had moved in together, and Moana hinted last November that she would soon propose to Maria.

Posting a series of images to Instagram of the pair glammed up for their night out at the Marie Claire Women of the Year Awards, the couple seemed smitten.

In one photo, Moana even appeared to be about to get down on bended knee and pop the question.

In the comments section, fans noticed the romantic air of the images, with one person asking: ‘How do I get tickets to the wedding?’

Moana was quick to reply to the curious follower, ‘Watch this space!’, along with a laughing emoji.

Ghanaian Couple Arrested in Canada for Stealing Car and Shipping It to Ghana

News Hub Creator10h

A Ghanaian couple is facing serious legal trouble in Canada after allegedly stealing a vehicle and attempting to ship it to Ghana. Canadian authorities have confirmed that the pair is under investigation for the crime, which has drawn significant attention due to the international nature of the offense.

According to police reports, the couple reportedly stole the car from a residential area and coordinated efforts to transport it overseas. The theft was discovered during routine checks by law enforcement, leading to the couple’s immediate arrest. Investigators say the case involves cross-border criminal activity, highlighting the complexity of tracking stolen property across international boundaries.

Authorities are working closely with shipping agencies and customs officials to intercept the vehicle before it leaves Canada. Legal experts have warned that the couple could face severe penalties under Canadian law, including lengthy prison sentences and substantial fines, depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

The incident has sparked discussions about the need for tighter security and verification processes in international shipping, especially for high-value items like vehicles. Ghanaian authorities have also been notified, and collaboration is expected to ensure that international legal protocols are followed.

The case remains under active investigation, with Canadian law enforcement urging the public to report any suspicious activity related to vehicle theft or international smuggling.
