Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was Ghana’s first President
On January 2, 1964, a shocking assassination attempt was made on the life of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, by his own security guard, Police Constable Seth Ametewee, at the Flagstaff House. This was the fourth attempt on Nkrumah’s life.
While the attack failed to kill Nkrumah, the president’s loyal security officer, Chief Superintendent Salifu Dagarti, tragically lost his life as he shielded the president from the gunfire.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, is often remembered as a leader who survived numerous assassination attempts during his time in office.
According to Nkrumah’s autobiography ‘Dark Days in Ghana’, there were at least six known attempts on his life.
“Members of the Police and the Special Branch have been involved in each of the six attacks made on my life, and have frequently ignored, and sometimes aided, the activities of people they knew were plotting to overthrow the government,” part of Nkrumah’s book is quoted.
The article narrated that one of Nkrumah’s attacks was by his own security guard, Police Constable Seth Ametewee, at the then seat of government, the Flagstaff House, on Thursday, January 2, 1964.
“The time was about 1:15 pm and the setting was the courtyard of the seat of the Government of Ghana, the Flagstaff House. In the company of two security guards and his aide de camp (ADC), Salifu Dagarti, President Nkrumah was about moving from the Flagstaff House to the Christiansborg (Osu) Castle for lunch.
“Police Constable Ametewee, who was on guard duty at the Flagstaff House shot at President Nkrumah four (4) times when the President was moving towards his car. Four gunshots at the President by no other person but a Police Officer assigned to guard the presidential office? This gory act resonates with the Shakespearean assertion that goes,” part of the article reads.
Amid the chaos, Nkrumah’s driver was nowhere to be found and the two guides, including his Aide-De-Camp (ADC), who were with him took cover behind his vehicle.
He fired at Nkrumah once again, when the late former president stood up to understand what was happening, but Superintendent Salifu, the ADC, intervened and took the bullet for the president in his head which killed him instantly.
“Constable Ametewee, who was appointed a presidential guard some few days ago, fired again but his gun failed and the president started crying for help but the armed police officers and senior government officials at the scene made no move. One official was reported to have remarked, ‘They’ve bungled it again’.”
Nkrumah then started running for cover which led to him finding the Flagstaff House kitchen where the famous fight took place.
“Ametewee had bitten the President’s cheek and the President also kicked Ametewee in the groin and Ametewee became unconscious momentarily,” parts of the article reads.
It added, “It was only at this stage that other police officers intervened, knocking out Ametewee and he laid on the floor of the kitchen of the Flagstaff House. He was then placed under arrest.”
Constable Ametewee was sentenced to death by the Criminal Session of the High Court in Accra, for the murder of Supt Salifu and the attempt to kill the president.
However, the Supreme Court overturned the death sentence of Ametewee after it ruled that his intention was not to kill Salifu; saying, “If a person does an act with the intent to kill…and his act happens to take effect, whether completely or incompletely, against a different person, he shall be liable to be tried and punished as if his intent has been directed against that different person…”
One of the big six, JB Danquah, died in prison after he was detained for allegedly bribing Ametewee to kill Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The aftermath of Kantamanto fire which has destroyed several shops
A devastating fire has ravaged the Kantamanto market, causing huge damage to several shops and properties.
The Ghana National Fire Service confirmed that the fire, which broke out around 1 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2024, has been contained and efforts are ongoing to prevent further destruction.
As of the latest update, thirteen fire tenders are on-site battling the intense fire, with firefighting teams working tirelessly to control the flames and prevent them from spreading.
Footage from the scene shows the market engulfed in smoke, with the fire visibly wreaking havoc.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Alex King Nartey who reported live from the site, confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far.
“While the fire has not yet been fully extinguished, it has been contained to prevent further spread. There have been no reported fatalities,” Nartey stated. “The situation is still being managed, and we’re doing everything we can to control it.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with authorities working to determine the source of the blaze and assess the extent of the damage.

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has indicated that while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) possesses a significant majority in the upcoming Parliament, it cannot govern independently.

In a gorgeous display of misplaced priorities, the Ghanaian government has chosen to lavish millions of cedis on a series of prestigious national awards, including honouring the President himself as they described him as “The Greatest Ghanaian of our time,” while concurrently failing to pay its mounting debts to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has approved a law that abolishes the death penalty in the southern African state with immediate effect.
Rights group Amnesty hailed the decision as a “beacon of hope for the abolitionist movement in the region”, but expressed regret that the death penalty could be reinstated during a state of emergency.
Mnangagwa’s move comes after Zimbabwe’s parliament voted earlier in December to scrap the death penalty.
Zimbabwe last carried out an execution by hanging in 2005, but its courts continued to hand down the death sentence for serious crimes like murder.
About 60 people were on death row at the end of 2023, according to Amnesty.
They will be re-sentenced by the courts, with judges ordered to consider the nature of their crime, the time they spent on death row and their personal circumstances, the state-owned Herald newspaper reports.
Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said the abolition of the death penalty was “more than a legal reform; it is a statement of our commitment to justice and humanity”.
The death sentence was introduced in what is now Zimbabwe during British colonial rule.
Mnangagwa has been a long-standing critic of capital punishment, citing his own experience of being sentenced to death in the 1960s for blowing up a train during the guerrilla war for independence.
His sentence was later commuted to 10 years in prison.
The Death Penalty Abolition Act was published in the government gazette on Tuesday after Mnangagwa signed it into law.
Amnesty said the move was not “just great progress” for Zimbabwe but also a “major milestone” in international efforts to end “this ultimate cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment”.
It urged the Zimbabwean authorities to “remove the clause included in the amendments to the Bill allowing for the use of the death penalty for the duration of any state of public emergency”.
Mnangagwa’s Zanu-PF party has ruled Zimbabwe since independence in 1980.
It has repeatedly been accused by opposition and rights groups of ruling with an iron fist in its bid to remain in power.
Globally, 113 countries, including 24 in Africa, have fully abolished the death penalty, according to Amnesty.
The five countries with the highest number of executions in 2023 were China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and the US, the rights group added.

She said grassroots participation and development played a pivotal role in clinching a resounding victory for the NDC party in the area.
Madam Afo-Toffey who retained the Jomoro Parliamentary seat for a second time after 2020, was addressing party supporters, sympathisers, the clergy, the Muslim community, and indigenes of Jomoro during a victory thanksgiving service at the Bonyere Victory Park in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region.
It followed her overwhelming victory in the December 07 Parliamentary elections as the Member of Parliament-Elect for Jomoro.
Madam Afo-Toffey said she would work hard to make Jomoro become an NDC stronghold, adding that “the wide vote margin between 2020 and 2024 demonstrates that the people of Jomoro have accepted her as their lawmaker.”
Madam Afo-Toffey reiterated the NDC government’s intentions to empower women with the establishment of the Women’s Development Bank which she had initiated and offer job opportunities to the teeming youth in her constituency.
The MP also reminded President-Elect, Mr John Dramani Mahama to spearhead the affirmative action bill by appointing 30 percent of women into responsible positions in his government.
Madam Afo-Toffey expressed grave concern about the need to put the road network in Jomoro in shape, especially from Samenye barrier to New Town.
She asked for more prayers to continue to bring more development to the area.
Mr. Emmanuel Ndako Benle, the Constituency Secretary, said the Party would not rest but galvanise grassroots support to retain the seat after the former MP J.W. Acquah, who secured a third term for the NDC.
He acknowledged that Jomoro had witnessed an unprecedented development during the NDC administration.
Mr Ndako Benle said even in opposition, Madam Afo-Toffey had worked tirelessly to bring development to Jomoro.
He said Ghanaians voted massively for change because of the lack of development by the NPP government and economic hardships.
Mr. Ndako Benle reminded NDC appointees to learn a great lesson from the abysmal electoral defeat of the NPP and serve Ghanaians with humility in development.
He advised NDC appointees to eschew arrogance, and disrespect and allow the rule of law to work.

Fifteen people were killed and at least 35 injured after a man apparently inspired by the Islamic State group drove into large crowds in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the early hours of New Year’s Day, authorities have said.
Here’s what we know so far about what happened and the perpetrator.
At 03:15 local time on New Year’s Day, a Ford pick-up truck rammed into crowds gathered on Bourbon Street in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter.
CCTV footage shows a white, Ford F-150 Lightning vehicle driving onto the pavement to get around a police car before hitting pedestrians.
Police described the act as “very intentional”, adding that the attacker – identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar – was “hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did”.
“This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could”, said New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick.
Jabbar was also armed and fired on law enforcement, injuring two officers. He was then killed by police gunfire.
Whit Davis, from Shreveport, Louisiana, told the BBC that he was held in a bar with a large group in the aftermath of the attack while police secured the scene.
When they left, they “were walking past dead and injured bodies all over the street”, he said.
Who was Shamsud-Din Jabbar?
The FBI has named the assailant as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, an Army veteran and US citizen from Texas.
A flag associated with the Islamic State (IS) group was found in the vehicle he was driving and the FBI said it was investigating what affiliations Jabbar may have had with terrorist groups.
In an evening address, President Joe Biden said the FBI had briefed him on the attack. The suspect uploaded videos to social media “mere hours before the attack” indicating that he was inspired by IS and expressing a “desire to kill”, Biden said.
Suspected improvised explosive devices were also found in the area.
A long gun with a “suppressive device” on it – acting as a silencer – was also recovered.
According to a now-removed LinkedIn profile, Jabbar had worked in various roles in the US Army, including in human resources and IT, before he was discharged. He was deployed to Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010.
In a YouTube video posted in 2020, Jabbar said his time in the military had taught him “the meaning of great service and what it means to be responsive and take everything seriously, dotting i’s and crossing t’s to make sure that things go off without a hitch”.
He studied at Georgia State University from 2015 to 2017, graduating with a degree in computer information systems.
He was married twice. His first marriage ended in 2012 and his second lasted from 2017 to 2022.
He also appears to have worked in real estate, holding a licence that expired in 2021. He had a criminal record, relating to traffic offences and theft.
The pick-up truck he was driving was electric and believed to have been rented in Texas via an app called Turo.
Are there additional suspects?
The FBI said they believed the suspect had help in carrying out his attack, particularly in placing suspected explosive devices.
CBS reports that law enforcement has not yet released evidence of those accomplices.
Earlier reports said authorities were reviewing video footage, but CBS reported that the footage had been determined to only show bystanders.
Who were the victims?
Among the dead is former Princeton University football star Martin “Tiger” Bech, according to the college’s athletics department.
“There was no more appropriate nickname of a Princeton player I coached,” Bob Surace, head football coach, said in a statement.
“He was a ‘Tiger’ in every way – a ferocious competitor with endless energy, a beloved teammate and a caring friend.”
The University of Georgia’s president said one of its students had been critically injured, while the Israeli government said two nationals were among those hurt.
Police say it appears that the victims were mainly locals from New Orleans, even though many tourists were visiting for New Year celebrations and the now-postponed Sugar Bowl, part of the American football college play-offs.

Gravita India Limited, a leading global recycling company, has expanded its operations with the launch of a new aluminium recycling plant in Ghana.
In a statement, the company said this latest initiative aligns with Gravita’s strategy to replicate its recycling operations across the globe, strengthening its foothold in international markets.
The newly commissioned facility, operated by Recyclers Ghana Limited, a step-down subsidiary of Gravita, has begun commercial production of recycled aluminium alloys. The plant’s first phase boasts an annual capacity of 4,000 MTPA, with plans to double this to 8,000 MTPA in subsequent phases. The company has invested approximately $800,000 in this facility, funded through internal accruals.
Gravita will source domestic aluminium scrap for production at the Ghana plant, catering primarily to the automotive and die-casting industries in Europe and Asia. This development is expected to bolster the company’s aluminium business segment, shifting its overall sales mix towards aluminium products.
The Ghana facility adds to Gravita’s existing aluminium recycling operations in Senegal, Mozambique, Tanzania, Togo, and India. This move is part of the company’s broader vision to diversify geographically while maintaining its commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Gravita operates 12 state-of-the-art, eco-conscious manufacturing facilities worldwide, with a combined processing capacity of 308,659 MTPA. The company has a presence in over 70 countries and more than three decades of recycling expertise, making it a global leader in sustainable manufacturing.

In every democracy, debate is essential to governance because it draws on the collective wisdom of citizens. In Ghana, this principle reminds us that whichever government is elected needs our intellectual support. We cannot expect to enjoy the benefits of governance if we withhold our ideas simply because we dislike the people in power. Wisdom can expire if left unused for too long. Today’s bright idea, if not implemented, may become tomorrow’s missed opportunity.
I have personally contributed ideas and proposals to various governments since 2006. One notable example is the “Talk Time Tax,” introduced during the Baah Wiredu era and featured in the 2008 budget. My revenue-generation ideas were also acknowledged on page 337 of the 2010 budget during the Mills presidency.
Over the years, I have provided numerous briefs that officials themselves initially recognised as useful. However, a recurring issue has emerged: once a preliminary concept is shared, some officials rush to implement it, often without adequate consultation. They attempt to take full credit. In the process, the original proponent is sidelined, and the larger vision behind the proposal is lost.
This hasty approach has led to significant failures. Several recommendations capable of generating at least GH¢8 billion annually were either misunderstood or poorly implemented, resulting in disappointing outcomes. Despite these setbacks, I remain committed to Ghana. At one point in my forties, I contemplated walking away from public engagement altogether. Yet, my belief in the potential of our nation keeps me engaged.
For Ghana to develop more intelligently, we must all do our part. Citizens with good ideas should be encouraged to share them, and officials in both government and public institutions should welcome these contributions with open-mindedness, honesty, and a sense of fair play. We have both the solutions and the skills needed to drive national progress; the real obstacles are the reluctance of brilliant minds to step forward and the tendency of some officials to mishandle worthwhile proposals.

Ghanaian musician, Kuami Eugene, has expressed concern about the absence of visible lights on streets at night.
Having experienced an accident in 2024, he emphasised the importance of drivers ensuring their car lights are in good condition before setting out.
“I will plead with everyone that whenever you decide to go out, first and foremost, check your car’s lights.
Because we don’t have streetlights on many of our roads at night, if your car’s lights aren’t working, you’re facing a serious problem,” he stated.
He further emphasised, “It is very sad that there are no visible streetlights on our roads at night. So, if you’re a driver, I urge you to check your lights before hitting the road.”
Kuami Eugene also reminded drivers, particularly the careless ones, to prioritise their safety and well-being.
