Ghanaians’ Reaction as Sammy Gyamfi Makes Headlines Again After Another Lady Displays Dollars

News Hub Creator17h

Ghana Gold Board Acting CEO, Sammy Gyamfi, is once again in the spotlight following the emergence of a new video featuring him with a woman identified as Efya Dragon—a known supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The video, which has gone viral on social media, shows Gyamfi posing for a photo with Efya. Shortly after, Efya shared another video in which she is seen flaunting stacks of U.S. dollars while mocking someone referred to as “Kwapiah” for allegedly backing out before reaping the rewards.

Although Efya did not disclose the source of the money, many social media users have speculated that it may have been provided by Gyamfi, fueling assumptions of political patronage. Neither party has confirmed or denied the claims, leaving room for widespread speculation.

This latest incident adds to Gyamfi’s string of public controversies. In a previous widely circulated video on X (formerly Twitter), he was seen handing over dollar bills to Evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, founder of the Heaven Way Church. That clip drew intense backlash and forced Gyamfi to issue a public apology. Presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu later acknowledged the apology, urging Gyamfi to be more prudent in his public dealings.

The current situation has once again divided public opinion. While critics question the propriety of Gyamfi’s associations and spending, others argue that as a private citizen, he has the right to support individuals or causes with his personal resources.

As scrutiny continues to grow, many are calling for greater transparency and accountability from public officials in both their official and personal engagements.

‘Empty promises, failing policies’ – Dr Amin Adam blasts NDC’s ‘fanciful governance’

0

Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has attacked the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing its leadership as “fanciful” and detached from the reality facing Ghanaians.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 16, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee said the NDC’s attempt to mask deep economic failings with slogans and propaganda is collapsing fast under scrutiny.

“The goodwill they enjoyed at the outset of their administration is rapidly eroding under the weight of failing policies,” Dr. Amin Adam declared, pointing to fresh tax increases, dismissals of workers, and worsening living conditions.

He singled out the newly introduced “Dumsor Levy,” effective today, July 16, as a prime example of the government’s insensitivity.

“This levy will worsen the cost of living for Ghanaians,” he said, adding that pleas from transport groups had been ignored despite the expected knock-on effect on fares.

He accused the NDC of betraying young voters by sacking innocent youth from their jobs.

“If you have recently lost your job, please know that the NDC has abandoned you and shows little concern for your welfare,” he stated.

“The future NPP Government will restore your jobs and bring back dignity to the young people of our country.”

Taking on the government’s economic messaging, he said the apparent gains in the value of the cedi were artificial.

“Despite the denial by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana regarding intervention in the forex market, the International Monetary Fund’s latest Staff Report revealed that the Bank intervened with $1.4 billion in the first quarter of 2025.”

He said the funds used for the intervention were part of reserves built by the previous NPP administration, discrediting the NDC’s narrative of economic rebound.

He further accused the NDC of manipulating budget figures to paint a worse fiscal picture.

“The large accumulation of non-existent payables… can no longer stand,” he said, citing the IMF’s revelation that much of it was unsupported by valid documentation.

On the government’s fiscal credibility, he said the 2025 budget was under severe stress.

“As of 11th July 2025, auction data indicates over GH¢6 billion in repayments, as the government reallocates resources from vital sectors of the economy to cover auction shortfalls.”

He warned that 13 out of 28 treasury auctions this year had failed to meet targets.

“These auction failures indicate investor fatigue as the Government continues to manipulate rates… to undermine price discovery,” he said, noting the growing risk to investor confidence.

Dr. Amin Adam dismissed the 24-Hour Economy Programme as political theatre.

“It remains a theoretical construct with attractive visuals, reminiscent of the famous Green Book… The launch… was meant to play to the gallery… as it is practically difficult to realise the objectives of a program that has no dedicated source of funding.”

He called on the Minister for Finance to use the Mid-Year Budget Review to explain how the government plans to fund the economy and this flagship programme.

“These and many other reasons demonstrate that the NDC’s fanciful attempt to show courage in the face of unredeemable promises will soon become a reality for the people of Ghana to see,” he warned.

While acknowledging internal challenges in the NPP following its 2024 electoral defeat, he urged the party to regroup.

“Three years may seem distant, but in political terms it is just around the corner,” he said. “The campaign for 2028 begins now.”

He concluded by rallying support for the party’s upcoming National Conference and calling for unity to retake power.

“We have, in the past, overcome even greater odds to secure victory. We have the capability—and the resolve—to rise above our current challenges.”

COPEC predicts 6–9% hike in Petrol and Diesel prices

0

Fuel prices at the pump are projected to increase by between 6% and 9% during the second pricing window of July 2025, according to market analysis conducted by the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC).

The mean retail price of petroleum products is expected to rise by an average of 8% from current levels when the new pricing window begins on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Expected Price Adjustments:

  • Petrol is projected to rise by 6.47%, moving from the current average of GHS11.59 per litre.

  • Diesel is anticipated to see the steepest increase, going up by 9.30% from its current mean of GHS12.97 per litre.

  • Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), however, is expected to record a marginal drop of 0.45% per kilogram.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 15, COPEC explained that the projections are based on current market indicators and assume there will be no major changes in global Free-On-Board (FOB) petroleum prices or the cedi-dollar exchange rate in the short term.

The projected increases come despite a 4.89% drop in crude oil prices, from $74.43 to $70.79 per barrel, and a 0.47% depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, from GHS10.5288 to GHS10.5785 per dollar.

According to COPEC, the expected price hikes are largely being driven by the implementation of a GHS1 Energy Sector shortfall and debt repayment levy, recently introduced by the Ministry of Energy.

The Chamber cautioned that the final pump prices could vary within a ±5% margin of the estimates, depending on actual market movements.

The new prices will officially take effect from Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Read below the statement by COPEC

CHAMBER OF PETROLEUM CONSUMERS – (COPEC)
ACCRA

14 July 2025

* FUEL PRICES ARE EXPECTED TO GO UP 6%-9% IN THE SECOND PRICING WINDOW OF JULY 2025*

The current mean fuel price is expected to go up by about 8% in the next Pricing Window

Analysis of Projection

Barring any unforeseen major changes in global Petroleum FOB prices and the Dollar: Cedi exchange rates, indications across the downstream petroleum market are that, in the next window beginning 16 July 2025,

i. the mean pump retail price of Petrol is expected to go up by 6.47% of the current mean price of GHS11.59/L
ii. The mean price of diesel is also expected to go up by 9.30% of the current mean price of GHS12.97/L and
iii. Mean LPG price per kg is also to go down by about -0.45%.

Acknowledging that, the Crude price has gone down by -4.89% from $74.43/barrel to $70.79/barrel and that the Cedi has slightly depreciated relatively to the Dollar from an average rate of $1:GHS10.5288 to $1:GHS10.5785 (-0.4720%), coupled with the introduction of the Energy Sector shortfall and debt repayment levy of GHS1 by the Ministry of Energy, the following will constitute the projected mean retail prices for Petroleum products to within ±5% of COPEC’s projection starting from 16 July 2025.

Petrol .. GHS12.34/L
Diesel .. GHS14.18/L
The Mean Price for Petrol and Diesel..GHS13.26/L

LPG.. GHS11.55/kg

Thus, a 14.5 kg of LPG cylinder would be expected to be sold at GHS167.43 within the next window.

Below are the detailed descriptions.

1. PETROL
Though the international FOB price of petrol has decreased from $740.93/MT to $716.30/MT (-3.32%), the retail price works up to GHS12.34/L

Thus, the retail price of Petrol is expected to increase by 6.47% of the current mean pump retail price of GHS11.59/L, to close selling between GHS11.72/L and GHS12.96 /L , within ±5% range of COPEC’s projected figure of GHS12.34/L.

2. DIESEL
In the same manner, with the International FOB price of diesel increasing from $722.48/MT to $743.07/MT (2.85%), the projected mean retail pump price for the next window shall be GHS14.18/L

Diesel is therefore expected to increase in price by about 9.30% of the current mean pump retail price of GHS12.97/L to be selling between GHS13.47/L and GHS14.89/L , within ±5% range of COPEC’s projected figure of GHS14.18/L.

3.0 Mean Price of Petrol and Diesel
The mean price of petrol and diesel for the coming window per available parameters shall be GHS13.26/L . The mean pump price is therefore expected to increase by 7.96% over the current mean price of GHS12.28/L to be be selling between GHS12.60/L and GHS13.92/L, within ±5% of COPEC’s projected mean price of GHS13.26/L.

4. LPG
With the international FOB price of LPG decreasing from $492.70/MT to $465.52/MT (-5.41%), the projected retail price of LPG is expected to be on the average at GHS11.55/kg.

Thus, within ±5% error, LPG is expected to be selling between GHS10.97/kg and GHS12.12/ kg.

Remarks:
1. COPEC is very much appreciative of the fairly stable Dollar:Cedi exchange rate, which is being enjoyed in the fuel industry.

* It is anticipated that the Dollar: Cedi exchange rate will continue to improve for the benefit of the general consumers of petroleum products.

2. COPEC maintains that, Government must do all it can to reduce taxes on LPG or to subsidize the price of LPG to promote and encourage its nationwide accessibility and usage which will eventually help save the environment from further degradation by the use of firewoods.

3. Currently, the total taxes and levies on retail prices of Petrol and Diesel is about 26.55%.

* COPEC is requesting for the reduction of tax rates or to take off some of the fuel taxes to lessen the burden on consumers.

* Alternatively, a formula can be adopted to vary the total levies with change in the Dollar:Cedi rate.

4. We further appeal to the government not to relent in getting Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) back on stream in order to avoid or reduce the importation of finished products, with possible associated fuel contamination.

5. COPEC wishes to appeal to the OMCs not to unduly increase fuel prices with the introduction of the new e-levy against the interest of consumers in the next window.

Mahama’s fuel ban could deliver 81 maternity clinics, 121 schools and 303 CHPS compounds – Dr Khalid

0

President John Mahama’s decision to scrap fuel allowances for political appointees could save Ghana over GH¢121 million in four years.

According to Economic Policy Advisor Dr. Sharif Mahmud Khalid, the savings could fund hundreds of health and education projects across the country.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, July 15, Dr. Sharif said a rough estimate using fuel consumption data from GOIL showed that if 1,000 government vehicles—comprising 500 saloon cars and 500 4x4s—were using 50 liters of fuel per week per vehicle, Ghana could save “probably about a total of 2.5 million plus a month and 30 million plus a year.”

Veterans deserve better – Defence Minister Omane Boamah calls for national support

0

Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has called on Ghanaians to unite in support of the country’s military veterans, describing them as heroes who have been neglected for too long.

Posting on Facebook on Wednesday, July 16, Dr Boamah announced that steps are being taken to tackle the “financial insecurity and social isolation” affecting former service personnel.

“Yesterday, after an impactful emergency National Security Council meeting chaired by President John Dramani Mahama on the Bawku Chieftaincy conflict, I had the profound honour of inaugurating the 4th Governing Board of the Veterans Administration, Ghana,” he wrote.

“As Minister for Defence, I’m committed to ensuring our veterans receive the care and support they deserve.”

Dr Boamah listed several measures under development, including enhanced healthcare access through the Mahama Cares Initiative, financial support via DIHOC proceeds, and employment training for retired personnel.

“We’re committed to addressing these challenges,” he declared. “Our veterans should not be left behind.”

The Minister ended his post with a passionate call for action: “Please share this post to SHOW your appreciation for our veterans, and let’s reset Ghana for their benefit.”

Using hashtags such as #SupportOurVeterans and #ResetGhana, Dr Boamah signalled a renewed focus on national unity and responsibility toward those who once served the flag.

Ga Mantse pledges support for Onesta Ghana Limited’s palm oil initiative

0

The Ga Mantse and President of the Ga Traditional Council, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Tsuru II, has pledged his support for Onesta Ghana Limited’s efforts to boost palm oil production in Ghana.

The Ga Mantse made the commitment during a courtesy call on the company to strengthen ties and encourage local economic development through agro-industrial partnerships.

Onesta Ghana Limited, an agro-industrial firm specialising in oil palm development, processing, and trade facilitation, recently launched the Redgold Oil Palm Plantation (ROPP), a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) aimed at establishing a sustainable, fully integrated oil palm value chain to position Ghana as a major global player in the palm oil industry.

Welcoming the initiative, His Royal Majesty commended the company for choosing Accra as its base and expressed optimism about the project’s transformative potential. “I acknowledge the importance of palm oil and its benefits. I believe this project from Onesta Ghana—ROPP—with collaboration, will drive progress and development. This resounding initiative will create massive employment for the youth and promote export,” he stated.

The Ga Mantse further assured the company of his full support. “I promise within my powers to support this good move for the development of Ga State and the nation at large,” he added.

The Board Chairman of Onesta Ghana Limited, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, expressed gratitude for the warm reception and emphasised the symbolic importance of the visit. “The Ga Mantse is the custodian of the land on which the company operates and commands great respect among the chiefs in Ghana,” he said, adding that the leadership of Onesta Ghana was committed to reviving the palm oil sector and restoring its global prominence.

“We cannot begin this journey without introducing ourselves to you for your blessings and guidance to pave the way to work effectively,” Dr. Spio-Garbrah noted. He reiterated the board and management’s openness to continued engagement with the traditional leadership.

The Executive Director of Onesta Ghana Limited, Maxwell Nii Commey, also thanked the Ga Mantse and his delegation for their visit and pledged the company’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate. “We are honoured to meet the Ga Mantse and his elders, to show their unflinching appreciation for strong partnership. We hope His Royal Majesty will use his outfit to lobby with the chiefs of various communities for us to get more lands for massive palm oil plantations,” he said.

His Royal Majesty reaffirmed his promise to assist Onesta Ghana in acquiring more land from traditional institutions, describing the collaboration as a crucial step towards economic empowerment and local development.

The visit marks the beginning of what both parties hope will be a fruitful partnership between traditional leadership and private industry. Members of Onesta Ghana’s management team were also present at the meeting.

President Mahama scraps fuel allowance for appointees

0

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate cancellation of fuel allowance and fuel allocations for all political appointees as part of stringent measures to reduce government expenditure.

The move is aimed at cutting costs and redirecting public funds to priority areas of national development.

The Presidency indicated that leadership must lead by example in making sacrifices, especially as the government called on citizens to endure economic challenges.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Spokesperson to the President and Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the decision aligned with broader efforts to streamline governance and foster fiscal discipline.

Cost-saving

This latest directive follows earlier austerity measures, including a reduction in the number of ministers and presidential staff, as well as the discontinuation of satellite TV subscriptions for offices at the Presidency and other government facilities.

President Mahama’s administration has consistently stressed the need for prudent financial management amid global and domestic economic pressures.

According to the minister, the scrapping of fuel benefits for appointees was expected to save millions of cedis annually, which would be re-allocated to critical sectors such as education, health care and infrastructure.

This is not the first time the Mahama administration has implemented cost-saving measures.

Since assuming office, the government has pursued policies aimed at reducing waste and improving efficiency in public expenditure.

Mr Ofosu stated that the latest decision was expected to reinforce public confidence in the administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.

Public Reaction

While some have lauded the move, describing it as a step in the right direction, some political actors have called for further cuts in government spending, including a review of other perks for public officeholders.

The Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammy Awuku, in an interview with the media in Parliament yesterday, called for the closure of fuel depots at the Osu Castle and the Jubilee House to give credence to the directive of the President.

The President’s directive takes immediate effect, with all ministries and government agencies instructed to comply without delay.

Other measures

Although the cancellation of fuel allowance for political appointees may not cumulatively impact government expenditure significantly, political watchers view it as a public appeal measure to get the average citizen to appreciate the willingness of the political class to also sacrifice for the good of the country.

Indeed, just 12 days ago, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, announced that state agencies would be required to run on prepaid electricity meters to enhance efficiency and reduce technical and commercial losses in the electricity distribution chain.

President Mahama had earlier barred his appointees from travelling on Business Class on any foreign trip, while all such trips were required to be approved through a stringent system.

Mustapha Gbande defends Yamin, accuses NDC insiders of fueling false galamsey allegations

0

Mustapha Gbande [L] has denied the involvement of Joseph Yamin in galamsey Mustapha Gbande [L] has denied the involvement of Joseph Yamin in galamsey

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) Mustapha Gbande has vehemently denied the involvement of the party’s National Organiser, Joseph Yamin’s involvement in illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.

His defence comes in the wake of the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, directing the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate allegations of galamsey, involving Joseph Yamin and the party’s Vice National Chairman, Yakubu Abanga.

In an official directive dated 15th July 2025, the Attorney-General ordered EOCO to initiate a full-scale investigation into the allegation.

The directive follows what the Attorney-General described as “growing public concern, corroborated by media reports and intelligence” regarding unauthorized mining operations in several districts across the country.

But speaking in an interview on Asempa FM monitored by GhanaWeb, Mustapha Gbande defended Yamin’s innocence of the accusation, stressing that the latter has no hand in galamsey activities.

“If Yamin wants to do mining who can stop him once he goes through the necessary process. So what is the motivation for wrongly accusation him to the extent that all NPP newspaper have reported on his alleged involvement in galamsey. Yamin is not into mining, if he were into mining that would have been a different matter.”

Mustapaha Gbande who is also the Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, accused some NDC leading members of being behind the false accusation.

“I am saying the NPP is not beyond this one, it is internal from the NDC. Not all persons in the NDC have the party at heart. You don’t think somebody wants Yamin and myself to fail so that they could take up our positions during the next party primary. But it won’t wash because we have worked for the party, we have used our youthful age taking risk for the party. There are people who did not go anywhere during the electioneering campaign. Today, they are holding appointments. During the campaign period there were people I called to go to specific places, and today, they are ministers. They have the effrontery to think that they must rubbish party elders”

He warned that will deal ruthlessly with those falsely accusing Yamin.

“…Yamin is not a bitter person but I am saying that nobody should try to develop the appetite of destroying his reputation. We will fight back, it doesn’t matter what it will take. We have sacrificed and given out too much for the party. It would be an act of unpardonable ingratitude.”

Asare parted ways with Kotoko earlier this year after a stint that saw him feature prominently in the Ghana Premier League. Known for his reflexes and command in the box, the move to South Africa represents a fresh start for the talented goalkeeper who also made his mark at Accra Lions.

The deal marks Durban City’s intent to strengthen their goalkeeping department as they prepare for the new season, and Asare is expected to bring experience and quality between the sticks.

NPP must re-group fast as NDC’s economic promises crumble – Dr Amin Adam fires

0

Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to regroup quickly and prepare for a return to power as he accuses the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of economic failure and policy deceit just seven months into office.

In a statement on July 16, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee acknowledged that it is not unusual for a party recently defeated at the polls to face internal challenges.

But he said this phase must be short-lived and urged the party to rediscover its winning formula quickly.

“The campaign for 2028 begins now,” the former Finance Minister declared.

Dr. Amin Adam launched a scathing attack on the current administration, warning that the goodwill the NDC enjoyed is fast eroding under the weight of its failing policies.

“Over the last six months, we have seen taxes increased and extensions of taxes that were due to end this year,” he said, pointing to the introduction of the “Dumsor Levy” which took effect on July 16, 2025.

He warned that this levy will worsen the cost of living, adding that the government has refused to heed the pleas of transport associations concerned about fare hikes.

He said the government’s actions betray the very youth it promised to support, claiming, “It is deeply troubling to learn that a government that promised jobs will implement measures that take jobs away from the very people who voted them into office.”

He urged the youth to know that “the NDC has abandoned you,” and assured them that a future NPP government will restore their dignity.

Dr. Amin Adam dismissed what he described as “false narratives” about the economy the NDC inherited, accusing them of relying on propaganda rather than performance.

He said that while the Governor of the Bank of Ghana denies market intervention, the IMF Staff Report confirms that $1.4 billion was used to support the cedi in the first quarter of 2025.

“This confirms our assertion that the intervention was supported by international foreign reserves accumulated by the previous NPP government,” he said.

He also criticised the NDC’s budget reporting, citing the IMF’s findings that much of the claimed arrears in 2024 were likely undocumented and may be revised down.

According to him, the large accumulation of non-existent payables created an exaggerated fiscal deficit for 2024.

Turning to investor confidence, Dr. Amin Adam said the government’s initial brag about market confidence has been exposed.

“Out of the total of 28 treasury auctions held from January 3 to July 11, 2025, 13 auctions failed,” he revealed, noting that this points to investor fatigue and policy uncertainty.

He warned the government to proceed cautiously in reopening the bond market, especially after the recent debt exchange. “Pension Funds…should not be unfairly pressured,” he said.

On the 2025 budget, he raised doubts about its credibility, revealing that over GH¢6 billion in repayments have already been made to cover auction shortfalls.

“Many flagship programs of the government remain underfunded as Ministers openly express frustration over cashflow constraints,” he said.

He questioned why the government is turning to a World Bank loan to pay contractors despite exceeding its revenue targets.

Dr. Amin Adam described the NDC’s flagship 24-Hour Economy Programme as nothing more than “a theoretical construct with attractive visuals,” lacking any allocated budget.

He urged the Finance Minister to use the upcoming Mid-Year Budget Review to clarify how the programme will be funded.

“These and many other reasons demonstrate that the NDC’s fanciful attempt to show courage in the face of unredeemable promises will soon become a reality for the people of Ghana to see,” he said.

He concluded by calling on the NPP to rally behind its leadership ahead of the National Delegates Conference and Presidential Primaries.

“Let us rally behind the leadership of the party, for in unity lies strength,” he said. “We have the capability—and the resolve—to rise above our current challenges, regain the trust of the Ghanaian people, and return to power.”

Ghc1 energy sector levy takes effect today

0

The implementation of the revised Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141), officially takes effect today, Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

The new levy structure, announced by the government and enforced by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), follows a previous postponement intended to assess global market conditions and protect recent gains in domestic fuel prices.

The decision to proceed was reached in consultation with the Ministries of Finance and Energy after a thorough review of current economic indicators.

Authorities say the timing aligns with broader efforts to stabilise the economy while addressing funding gaps in the energy sector.

The amended law introduces increased rates under the Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy (ESSDRL) for several petroleum products. These changes are designed to boost revenue for repaying legacy debts and supporting energy infrastructure.

Revised ESSDRL Rates Under Act 1141:

Bawku crisis: We’ll resign if you don’t resolve conflict

0

Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from six constituencies in the Bawku enclave—Zebilla, Garu, Bawku Central, Binduri, Tempane, and Pusiga—have threatened to suspend all party activities and resign if the government fails to resolve the ongoing Bawku conflict.

Their ultimatum follows renewed tensions sparked by the alleged destruction of a statue of Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II by military personnel.

At a press conference in Bawku, the NDC’s Bawku Central Communications Officer, Yusuf Otumba, called for an independent investigation into the alleged killing of civilians by military forces.

“As the frontline leaders and campaigners of the NDC in Kusuag, our lives are now under serious threat—not only from the violence but also from the growing frustration of our people, who now see us as enablers of a system that has completely betrayed them.

“We can no longer continue risking our lives and integrity for a government that appears to have little regard for our people, our leaders, or the policies we advocated on its behalf.

“Inaction is betrayal, and betrayal has consequences. If nothing is done, we, the entire NDC executives in the Kusaug Traditional Area, will resign. We refuse to be complicit in this great injustice. Let this press conference serve as our final notice to the government,” he said.

World’s top sugar maker shuts large Brazil plant to cut debt

0

Raizen SA, the world’s largest sugar producer, said on Tuesday that it was shutting down for an indefinite period one of its largest plants in Brazil, the Santa Elisa mill, as the company continues to adopt measures to deal with a large debt load.

Raizen, which is controlled by Shell and Brazilian conglomerate Cosan SA, said that as a result of the plant’s closure, it had entered into agreements with six sugar companies to sell 3.5 million metric tons of sugarcane that would be processed by the Santa Elisa mill.

It said the sale of that sugarcane would bring in 1.045 billion reais ($188.18 million) that Raizen will use to cut its debt of over 30 billion reais.

The Santa Elisa mill was a historical site for the Brazilian sugar and ethanol industry. The plant was founded 90 years ago in the main sugar belt of Ribeirao Preto, and helped consolidate Brazil’s position as the world’s largest sugar exporter.

Its past owners were behind the political movement in the 1970s to create Brazil’s ethanol program, called Proalcool, in a time when the world was struggling with record-high oil prices.

CEISE Br, an association of equipment makers for the sugar and ethanol industry, said the closure of Santa Elisa was worrying for the segment.

“There are concerns about the impact of this action in the industry, particularly regarding ongoing contracts for maintenance, technical support and supply of equipment in the current crop,” it said.

Raizen sold one of its plants in May and has offered other assets to competitors in Brazil as it tries to cut debt.

The company’s woes happened in a moment of weak sugar prices, with benchmark raw sugar futures on the ICE exchange having hit a four-year low in June.

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to paying cocoa farmers 70% of the world market price for their produce.

Speaking during his Thank You Tour in Sefwi Juaboso, Western North Region, on Tuesday, July 11, 2025, the President said the pledge is part of a broader plan to ensure fair compensation and improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers.

He acknowledged the hardships faced by cocoa-growing communities, including low prices, inadequate extension services, and delayed input distribution.

President Mahama said these issues would be addressed under his administration to restore dignity and reward to the hard work of farmers.

“So let me be clear today, we will ensure our commitment to pay our farmers 70% of the world market price of cocoa.,” he said.

President Mahama also announced a restructured cocoa rehabilitation programme focused on high-impact areas like Bia and Juaboso, where yields have dropped due to old trees and swollen shoot disease.

Under new leadership at COCOBOD, the government will prioritise the distribution of improved seedlings, enhance extension support, and ensure proper compensation for rehabilitated farms.

“We’ve also restructured the cocoa rehabilitation programme, especially in Bia and Juabosu areas, where swelling shoots and old trees have drastically reduced cocoa yields. Prophet Jimmy’s death post surfaces after Buhari’s demise

A social media post by U.S.-based Ghanaian pastor, Prophet Jimmy Alla-Mensah, is drawing renewed attention following the death of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, and the announcement of his state burial.

On July 5, 2025—nine days before Buhari’s passing was made public—Prophet Jimmy shared a brief but striking post on Facebook: “Nigeria, I see a state burial (leadership). May God have mercy, in Jesus’ mighty name, amen.”

At the time, no national mourning or leadership-related loss had been reported in Nigeria. However, on July 14, the BBC confirmed that former President Buhari had died on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82, in a clinic in London. His body was flown to Nigeria on Tuesday morning aboard the country’s presidential aircraft.

According to Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda—who had been with the late leader’s family in London—Buhari will be buried with full state honours in the compound of his private home in Daura, Katsina State. The late president’s final resting place is about 80 kilometers from the state capital, Katsina City.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a seven-day national mourning period in Buhari’s honour, beginning Sunday. All national flags are being flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.

Tributes have poured in from across the nation and beyond. Former President Goodluck Jonathan praised Buhari as a selfless patriot. General Ibrahim Babangida, who led the 1985 coup that ousted Buhari’s first regime as a military ruler—described him as “a moral compass” and “an example of modesty in public life.”

EOCO, QNET announce collaboration to combat organised crime in Ghana

0

This collaboration reflects the shared concern of both EOCO and QNET over the deceptive practices This collaboration reflects the shared concern of both EOCO and QNET over the deceptive practices

In a significant move to combat fraudulent activities and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation, QNET and Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) have entered into a formal collaboration.

This strategic partnership, anchored in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), is a unified response to the alarming rise in scams, illegal migration schemes, and human trafficking operations.

It underscores a shared determination to protect the public and hold accountable the criminal networks responsible.

This collaboration reflects the shared concern of both EOCO and QNET over the deceptive practices of criminal syndicates who use fake job offers, scholarship scams, and false promises of international opportunities to exploit Ghanaians and other West Africans.

These scams often misuse the names of legitimate international companies to lend credibility to their operations and deceive unsuspecting victims.

“EOCO and QNET have signed an MOU to collaborate to identify and dismantle these criminal networks. We appreciate QNET’s proactive stance and willingness to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to protect the public as well as their brand,” said Raymond Archer, Acting Executive Director of EOCO.

“This partnership is a significant step towards combating organised and cross-border crime in Ghana. Through this partnership QNET and EOCO are seeking to leverage our expertise and resources to disrupt and dismantle these criminal networks, protect our citizens and maintain the integrity of our economy.”

Under the MoU, QNET and EOCO will work together to:

Support the proactive investigation and disruption of criminal schemes involving brand impersonation and fraud.

Facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building on detecting and preventing fraud and human trafficking.

Raise public awareness about how syndicates operate and the signs of a potential scam.

Share information on suspicious activities in a structured and timely manner to improve enforcement action.

This partnership represents a shared commitment to safeguarding individuals and communities from exploitation. It builds on QNET’s ongoing efforts to support law enforcement agencies and community education, and EOCO’s mandate to investigate and prosecute organised crime.

“This collaboration with EOCO is timely, as QNET is about to open our new compliance office in Ghana which will serve as a touchpoint for all regulatory and security agencies,” said Biram Fall, Regional General Manager of QNET in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“This partnership is not about protecting a brand—it is about protecting people. Fraudsters have hijacked the names of reputable companies to exploit others. Together, we are drawing a line”, he added.

Over the past few years, QNET has actively undertaken several public awareness initiatives in Ghana to help communities identify and avoid fraudulent schemes.

These include media engagements, educational outreach, and stakeholder collaborations.

Most notably, in August 2024, QNET launched the nationwide “QNET Against Scams” campaign, which utilized radio, television, social media, and billboards to alert the public to common scam tactics and empower them to recognize red flags.

These sustained efforts reflect QNET’s ongoing dedication to education and transparency.

“Over the last two years, we have done everything within our power to combat this issue. But as a private company, there is a limit to how far our voice can carry. That is why today matters. Because today, we have EOCO standing beside us.” added Ramya Chandrasekaran, Chief Communications Officer of QI Group, the parent company of QNET.

“With EOCO’s reach, authority, and investigative powers, and our commitment to transparency and education, we now have the collective strength to take this fight to the next level. Together, we can disrupt these criminal networks. Together, we can warn and educate communities in even the most remote corners of Ghana. Together, we can give victims a voice and potential victims a shield.”

QNET and EOCO urge the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities or scams. If the public encounters individuals that are promoting job offers or overseas travel opportunities in the name of QNET, they can report it through:

Ghanaian Amapiano sensation DJ Azonto has dropped a new single as he vigorously chases Medikal over compensation for using his intellectual property without authorisation.

The dispute between DJ Azonto and Medikal continues to intensify, especially with the latter saying that he was not going to pay any compensation for the use of the “Alla” term.

DJ Azonto, in rebuttal, has recorded a new diss song directed at both Medikal and Shatta Wale, who was also featured on the “One Shoulder” song, as well as Beeztrap KOTM.

DJ Azonto’s version of “One Shoulder One Cedi Tax” has been making waves on social media, especially with its entrancing accompanying music video.

In the song, DJ Azonto makes some statements which suggests that he was going to pursue the compensation claim, saying that his ‘Alla’ term was stolen.

The ‘Fa No Fom’ hitmaker on “Toppa Thief” showcases his lyrical prowess while combining Amapiano rhythms with some Hiplife vibes.

The song “One Shoulder One Cedi Tax” is available across various streaming digital platforms.

IMF cites improved banking sector stability post DDEP, urges continued recapitalisation efforts

0

Ghana’s financial sector is showing significant signs of stability and recovery following the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

According to the IMF, most of the banks have met or exceeded their recapitalization targets by the close of 2024.

This positive assessment comes from a recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) report on Ghana’s financial sector. The report highlighted that 13 banks, which recorded capital deficits after the DDEP, had largely restored their Capital Adequacy Ratios (CAR) to 13 percent (without reliefs) and are on track to achieve full compliance by end-2025.

This progress is attributed to strong bank profitability and crucial support from the Ghana Financial Sector Stability Fund (GFSF).

However, the IMF noted that a few banks, including one state-owned institution, were behind their recapitalization schedules.

This is due to slower-than-anticipated progress on shareholder capital commitments, elevated Non-Performing Loans (NPLs), and delays in recognizing credit impairments and provisioning identified during the Bank of Ghana’s (BOG) 2023 asset quality assessments.

These institutions are now under intensified BoG monitoring and subject to corrective measures to accelerate their recapitalization plans, aiming for a CAR of 13 percent by end-March 2025 (as per the Staff-level Agreement Baseline) by end-2025.

The report also emphasized the potential positive impact of the World Bank-funded segment of the GFSF, which could assist some banks in meeting their CAR targets, provided they secured the necessary capital injections to be eligible for

access.

In a significant development for state-owned institutions, the National Investment Bank (NIB) has received substantial government support.

Attorney-General orders EOCO to probe Yamin, Abanga over illegal mining allegations

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has directed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate allegations of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, involving two executives of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In an official directive dated 15th July 2025, the Attorney-General ordered EOCO to initiate a full-scale investigation into the alleged illegal mining activities of Abanga Yakubu Alhassan, Vice Chairman of the NDC and Joseph Yamin, NDC National Organiser.

The directive follows what the Attorney-General described as “growing public concern, corroborated by media reports and intelligence” regarding unauthorized mining operations in several districts across the country.

The Attorney-General further instructed EOCO to extend its investigations to “any other persons found to be complicit in these unlawful mining activities.”

The probe is expected to cover issues raised in Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng’s widely publicized report on illegal mining in Ghana.

Dr Ayine also recommended that EOCO engage the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission to assist in the investigations, citing the Commission’s regulatory oversight role in Ghana’s mining sector.

The Attorney-General emphasised that the directive aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s unwavering commitment to eradicate illegal mining and restore Ghana’s natural resource governance.

“These activities not only flout our mining regulations but also gravely endanger our water bodies, forest reserves, and local livelihoods,” Dr Ayine stated in the letter, urging EOCO to treat the matter with “the urgency and gravity it deserves.”

Ballots and Blows: The new normal of Ghana’s electoral process?

0

Ghana, long celebrated as a beacon of democratic progress in West Africa, is now grappling with a sobering reality: electoral violence is no longer an isolated occurrence—it is becoming a disturbing norm. Once held up as a model for peaceful transitions of power, the country’s elections are increasingly marred by chaos, intimidation, and bloodshed. From polling stations turning into battlegrounds to journalists being assaulted in broad daylight, the scenes unfolding during recent electoral cycles paint a troubling picture of a democracy under strain.

This troubling trend threatens to erode decades of democratic gains and civic trust. The very institutions meant to uphold order and fairness during elections are now being tested, as political tensions spill over into physical confrontations and targeted attacks. For a nation that has prided itself on stability in a region often plagued by coups and authoritarianism, Ghana must now reckon with the possibility that its democracy is not as resilient as once believed. The implications are profound—not only for the country’s future governance but for the millions of citizens whose faith in the electoral process is quietly fading.

GTEC orders APC’s Hassan Ayariga to immediately cease using ‘Dr’ title

Dr Hassan Ayariga

From Polling Booths to Crime Scenes: An Escalating Trend

Electoral violence in Ghana has become alarmingly consistent. Recent elections have seen spikes in intimidation, physical assault, and blatant impunity.

2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon By-election

A seemingly routine by-election erupted into violence when masked national security operatives stormed the La-Bawaleshie polling station, firing live rounds and assaulting unarmed civilians. Nearly 20 people were injured, prompting the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to withdraw from the contest.

A Commission of Inquiry led by Justice Emile Short gathered testimony from over 20 key figures, including MP Sam George and the NDC’s Delali Kwasi Brempong. Although the Commission recommended compensation and security sector reforms, the government rejected many of its findings in a White Paper, fuelling public scepticism.

Nearly 20 people were injured

Nearly 20 people were injured

2020 General Elections

Official reports confirmed five deaths and 19 injuries following disputes and violence at polling stations and during post-election protests.

A particularly controversial incident involved then-Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, who admitted on live television that she had discharged a firearm at a voter registration centre in Kasoa. While she claimed she acted in self-defence, eyewitnesses accused her aides of firing multiple shots and intimidating registrants. Despite the outcry, no charges were filed.

2024 General Elections:

A peace pact signed ahead of the vote did little to prevent bloodshed. At least six fatalities were recorded, primarily from clashes between the two major parties, the NPP and the NDC.

The Ablekuma North Rerun : A Snapshot of Systemic Failure

The parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North on 11 July 2025, held across 19 polling stations, descended into disorder:

Thugs attacked the NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, former minister Hawa Koomson, party agents, and journalists. The police allegedly did little to intervene.

Three journalists were assaulted. One was slapped by a police officer, another was pepper-sprayed and rendered unconscious.

The Electoral Commission (EC) confirmed that, despite video evidence of violence during the 2024 polls, no arrests had been made.

The rerun resulted in a razor-thin margin, Ewurabena Aubynn (NDC) won with 34,090 votes to Owusu Afriyie’s 33,881, a difference of just 209 votes, marking the first NDC win in the constituency since the Fourth Republic began.

What’s Driving the Surge in Electoral Violence?

Ghana’s deepening electoral violence is underpinned by a growing culture of impunity. Those responsible for acts of violence during elections often face no consequences, sending a dangerous signal that such behaviour is tolerated. This lack of accountability not only emboldens perpetrators but also weakens the rule of law. Compounding this issue is the persistence of political vigilantism. Despite the passage of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act in 2019, many of these groups continue to function, often under rebranded identities, serving as unofficial enforcers for political parties with little to no fear of punishment.

The complicity or inaction of security forces further aggravates the situation. In several instances, including the Ablekuma North rerun, security personnel reportedly stood by while attacks were carried out, and in some cases, were directly involved. Such behaviour undermines public confidence in law enforcement. Additionally, the intensely competitive nature of Ghana’s elections, where outcomes are sometimes decided by razor-thin margins, fuels a perception that winning at all costs is justified. This escalating tension, combined with repeated incidents of unaddressed violence, has led to a dangerous erosion of public trust in the electoral system, pushing some citizens into disengagement while others feel compelled to take justice into their own hands.

How Can Ghana Break the Cycle?

To curb the growing trend of electoral violence, Ghana must commit to enforcing the law without favour. Every case of violence, regardless of political affiliation, must be investigated and prosecuted. Security officers who abuse their power or fail to act must face disciplinary and legal action. Equally important is the urgent need to dismantle political vigilante groups. The Vigilantism Act must be strictly applied, with security agencies identifying and shutting down all unregulated groups that pose a threat to peaceful elections.

Protecting journalists is also essential to safeguarding the democratic process

Protecting journalists is also essential to safeguarding the democratic process

Protecting journalists is also essential to safeguarding the democratic process. Media personnel must be guaranteed safety at polling stations, and any attacks, especially those involving law enforcement, must be prosecuted without delay. Furthermore, electoral reforms should include decentralising key aspects of the Electoral Commission’s operations to enhance local accountability and responsiveness. Finally, civic education and peacebuilding efforts must go beyond slogans. Civil society, religious leaders, and traditional authorities need to be actively engaged in fostering dialogue and promoting non-violent participation throughout the electoral cycle.

Is This Ghana’s New Reality?

Electoral violence is not inevitable, but it is persistent. The events in Ablekuma North serve as a stark warning, unless systemic reforms are enacted and enforced, these incidents will escalate, threatening Ghana’s democratic integrity.

Ghana has overcome challenges in the past. The resilience of its people, institutions, and civic movements remains strong. But if violence is allowed to become an accepted feature of competitive politics, the very foundation of democratic governance will be at risk.

Conclusion

Ghana’s democratic promise remains alive, but only if citizens, institutions, and leaders act decisively. Violence must not be normalised. Every incident of intimidation, assault, or impunity chips away at the legitimacy of elections and the faith citizens place in their leaders.

It is time to demand more, justice for victims, accountability for perpetrators, and a renewed commitment to peaceful, free, and fair elections. Only then can Ghana truly remain a pillar of democracy on the continent.

Over 500 illegally recruited personnel sacked from security services

More than 500 people have been removed from the country’s security services after a government review discovered irregularities in recruitment processes carried out before and after the December 2024 general election.

This was disclosed by the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, during the maiden Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 15, 2025.

The Member of Parliament for Asawase explained that a special committee reviewed the records.

He said a special committee reviewed the records of about 5,200 new recruits across the various services and discovered that hundreds of them did not satisfy the entry requirement.

According to the interior minister, the affected security agencies included the Ghana Police Service, which saw about 320 disqualified; the Ghana Immigration Service where some 730 were removed; and the Narcotics Control Commission, which had about 50 affected.

“We were able to get out about 320 who were not supposed to be there. Some were in their forties, diabetic, and medically unfit, but they were picked. We had to explain to them that with their situation, they could not remain in the service,” he stated.

The minister said the vetting looked at academic qualifications, age, and medical fitness.

He also cited an instance a Member of Parliament intervened on behalf of a relative who had nearly completed training.

However, upon closer review, it was discovered that the individual had not passed a single subject in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE), which was a minimum requirement for entry.

“They called and said the person didn’t pass SSSCE, didn’t even record one subject. Once you don’t meet the basic qualification, you have to go,” he stated.

According to him, all affected officers were offered written explanations.

He further said the ministry is planning new recruitment guidelines that will allow defined technical and support roles.

“I know people who went to vocational school and became dressmakers. The services need them to sew uniforms,” he said. “But they must know they’re being recruited as artisans, not officers.”

Muntaka added that future job notices will clearly spell out roles and qualifications to avoid confusion and restore public trust in the process.

As part of efforts to align national security institutions with theGovernment’s 24-Hour EconomyPolicy Agenda, the Ghana Immigration Service, has developed a 24-Hour Policy at its Headquarters in Accra.

Alhaji Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, the Minister for the Interior/National Security, said as of June, the Service had also prosecuted 13 suspects in Accra for human trafficking, illegal entry, and document forgery, whilst deterring breaches and enhancing national security.

He noted that the Service had analyzed 263 document fraud cases, identifying 111 as fraudulent, preventing identity theft, and related crime.

Alhaji Muntaka made the disclosure in his Mid-Year Review Report for the Ministry of the Interior/National Security at a press conference at the Presidency in Accra.

The press conference, which was organised by the Presidency Communication Bureau, dubbed the “The Governance Accountability Series”, is part of efforts by the Government to deepen transparency and accountability in governance.

Ghana Finalizes Cryptocurrency Regulatory Framework to Foster Innovation and Mitigate Risks

0

Ghana is taking a significant step forward in the world of digital assets by finalizing a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrency. This move aims to bring various digital asset platforms under formal oversight, potentially setting a precedent for other developing economies. The initiative underscores Ghana’s commitment to fostering innovation while mitigating risks associated with the unregulated crypto space, such as consumer protection, illicit financial flows, and market stability.

For businesses operating digital asset platforms in Ghana or those looking to enter the market, this upcoming framework will provide much-needed clarity. Currently, the lack of clear rules can deter legitimate businesses and investors. A well-defined regulatory landscape can enhance trust, promote innovation, combat illicit activities, and foster growth by bringing platforms into the formal financial system. This move signals Ghana’s readiness to embrace the digital economy responsibly.

Developing a comprehensive cryptocurrency framework involves balancing the decentralized nature of crypto with the need for centralized oversight. While the specifics of Ghana’s framework are yet to be fully disclosed, it is expected to cover key areas such as licensing and registration, consumer protection, anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing, taxation, and market integrity. The success of this framework will depend on its adaptability and ability to keep pace with rapid technological advancements in the crypto space.

Ghana’s proactive stance could significantly impact the broader landscape of African crypto adoption. The continent has seen remarkable growth in cryptocurrency usage, often driven by a need for alternative financial services, remittances, and inflation hedging. However, regulatory responses have been varied, from outright bans to cautious experimentation. If Ghana successfully implements a balanced and effective framework, it could serve as a blueprint for other African nations, leading to a more harmonized regulatory environment across the continent. This could facilitate cross-border crypto transactions and foster regional digital economic integration, moving African crypto from a largely informal sector to a more formalized and secure one.

Ultimately, the core objective behind Ghana’s regulatory push is to enhance financial stability. Unregulated digital assets can pose systemic risks to a nation’s financial system, including volatility spillover, potential for financial fraud, and challenges to monetary policy. By bringing these assets under regulatory purview, the Bank of Ghana and other financial authorities aim to monitor and manage risks, protect the financial system, and support economic growth. This forward-thinking approach positions Ghana not just as a participant, but as a leader in shaping the future of finance on the African continent.

Whether you’re a crypto enthusiast, an investor, or a business owner, Ghana’s move signifies a maturing market. It means more security, potentially more mainstream adoption, and a clearer path for legal and compliant operations. It’s a testament to the growing recognition of cryptocurrency’s permanent place in the global financial landscape. Ghana’s finalization of its cryptocurrency regulatory framework is a landmark decision that reflects a pragmatic understanding of the digital age, recognizing that rather than resisting change, it’s more beneficial to embrace and shape it responsibly. By providing a clear and robust framework for digital asset platforms, Ghana is not only safeguarding its financial system but also paving the way for a more innovative, inclusive, and secure digital future. This bold step sets a powerful example for how nations can navigate the complexities of cryptocurrency to harness its immense potential.

Black Queens forward Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah has praised Ghanaian fans for their unwavering support after the team’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Tanzania in their final Group C game at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The result secured Ghana a quarterfinal spot, where they will face Algeria on Friday, July 19, at the Stade Municipal de Berkane at 16:00 GMT.

Reflecting on the win, Boye-Hlorkah acknowledged the early setback when Ghana conceded first, but credited both her teammates and fans for lifting the squad.

“We conceded the goal, which I take responsibility for, but then, as I look around, all the girls are picking me up,” she said. “That’s what we needed today. That’s what the coach wanted—and I told the girls, we need a team.”

She continued, “I’m so proud of the girls. I’m so proud of the fans. We’re not going to win this game without being a team, and that’s what we did every second of that game.”

Ghana will now look to build on the momentum as they prepare for a crucial quarterfinal test against Algeria.

Shippers’ Authority blocks arbitrary fee hikes with new regulatory powers

0

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) has begun enforcing its expanded powers under its Act, 2024 (Act 1122), with decisive actions that have blocked unjustified fee hikes by shipping service providers.

In a statement responding to recent media inquiries about the law’s effectiveness, the GSA confirmed that it has denied proposed increases in charges from several shipping lines and ground handlers operating at Kotoka International Airport.

These rejections followed thorough reviews, which found the justifications for the proposed fees to be unsubstantiated.

“This obligation has been enforced without let or hindrance,” the GSA stated.

It referred to the new legal requirement that all shipping-related charges, tariffs, and fees must first be submitted to the Authority for review and approval before implementation.

The GSA emphasised that while it has taken on regulatory powers, its approach remains inquisitorial rather than adversarial.

“Being mindful that its role as a Regulator is not aimed at stifling businesses and international trade in particular, GSA has adopted an inquisitorial rather than adversarial approach,” the statement noted.

It explained that each complaint or proposed tariff change is subjected to thorough investigations, with all parties allowed to be heard.

The Authority is also tackling concerns about the arbitrary application of foreign exchange rates by some shipping lines.

After receiving complaints from shippers and freight forwarders, the GSA conducted investigations and requested a meeting with the Bank of Ghana (BoG), the shipping lines, and the complainants.

The meeting, held on July 15, 2025, is expected to lead to a directive from the BoG to prohibit the unlawful forex practices.

“The directive will be duly published for the attention and benefit of all stakeholders,” GSA assured.

As part of its broader enforcement plan, GSA has begun drafting a Legislative Instrument to operationalise Act 1122, incorporating input from all relevant stakeholders, including air, sea, and land transport regulators, terminal operators, and shipping lines.

“This collaborative approach further underscores GSA’s resolve to ensure that enforcement of the law would remain without fear or favour,” the statement said.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of stakeholders in the shipping and logistics industry and positioning Ghana as a preferred hub for international trade.

“These objectives remain the guiding principles in our operations and will be upheld at all times,” the GSA concluded.

Ghana President John Mahama promises to build six modern stadia – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to construct six modern sports stadia in Ghana’s newly created regions as part of efforts to expand access to quality sporting infrastructure.

Speaking during his “Thank You Tour” in the Western North Region, the former president revealed that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation has already begun work on the designs and planning for the projects.

“Under the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, modern sports stadia will be built in the six newly created regions, as well as in other regions that currently lack such infrastructure,” Mahama told residents and local chiefs during the engagement.

The project is aimed at ensuring fair distribution of sporting infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas. It is expected to boost youth development and unearth talent across the country.

The six new regions — Western North, Oti, North East, Bono East, Savannah, and Ahafo — were created in 2019 to improve administrative governance and decentralize development. Their inclusion expanded Ghana’s regions from ten to sixteen.

The proposed stadia are expected to serve as hubs for community sports and national events, contributing to both local economies and the development of sports in Ghana.

Investigate Abanga, Yamin over alleged galamsey activities

0

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has directed the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) to launch a full-scale investigation into alleged illegal mining activities involving certain individuals including Mr. Yakubu Abanga and Mr. Joseph Yamin.

In a letter dated Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the Attorney-General instructed EOCO to invite the two individuals—named in recent credible reports—for interrogation over their suspected involvement in unauthorised mining operations, commonly referred to as galamsey.

The directive follows rising public concern, intelligence assessments, and extensive media coverage of illegal mining, which continues to threaten Ghana’s water bodies, forest reserves, and rural livelihoods.

“These activities not only flout our mining regulations but also gravely endanger our water bodies, forest reserves, and local livelihoods,” the letter emphasised.

Dr. Ayine also asked EOCO to broaden its probe to cover other persons found complicit, with special attention to issues raised in the Prof. Frimpong-Boateng report on illegal mining.

Additionally, the Attorney-General called for collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, given the agency’s regulatory role, to support and guide the investigative process.

This move aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda, which seeks to restore discipline to Ghana’s natural resource governance and eliminate illegal mining across the country.

“The President has consistently reiterated his government’s firm commitment to eradicating illegal mining and restoring sanity to the natural resource governance regime in Ghana,” the Attorney-General stated.

EOCO has been urged to treat the matter with urgency and seriousness, in line with its mandate under the EOCO Act, 2010 (Act 804).

Mahama declares galamsey a national emergency, orders arrest of rogue taskforces

0

President John Mahama has declared the widespread environmental devastation caused by illegal mining a national emergency, promising urgent action to confront the deepening crisis.

Addressing a durbar during his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Western North Region on Tuesday, July 15, he expressed grave concern over the extent of destruction in Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi Anhwiaso.

The President blamed illegal mining activities for the alarming degradation of forest reserves and water bodies.

“We are alarmed by the environmental destruction that is reported across Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi-Anhwiaso, mainly due to illegal mining. I must be honest, this is a national emergency.

“The national taskforce will continue its efforts to halt illegal mining in our forest reserves and on our water bodies,” President Mahama said.

He did not spare individuals hiding behind the fight against galamsey to perpetrate extortion.

President Mahama condemned the activities of illegal task forces reportedly extorting money from licensed small-scale miners.

“I have also noticed the activities of the illegal anti-galamsey taskforces that go round extorting money from legitimate small-scale mining companies,” he noted.

“I have requested the authorities to arrest and prosecute any individuals involved in this illegal anti-galamsey activity,” he warned.

Ghana dispatch: Civil group condemns attacks during parliamentary re-run elections in Ablekuma – JURIST

0

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) issued a statement earlier today that strongly condemned the violence and vote-buying that marred the parliamentary re-run elections held in Ghana’s Ablekuma North constituency.

The group criticized what they described as “acts of political thuggery, intimidation, and inducement of voters,” calling these developments a threat to Ghana’s democratic integrity.

The Ablekuma North constituency, located in Accra, the capital of Ghana, has 218 polling stations within the constituency. During the 2024 general elections held in December, the Electoral Commission (EC) could not declare the winner of its parliamentary seat owing to irregularities, including the loss of original pink sheets, among other things, which marred the credibility of the results of 19 polling stations within the constituency.

The contest was between the two most dominant political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) whose candidate was Nana Akua Owusu Afiriyie and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) whose candidate was Ewurabena Aubynn. The coalition of the unaffected polling station saw the NPP candidate in a narrow lead with a difference of 48 votes. Thus, the EC did not declare a winner as a result of the apparent rigging that had occurred and the constituency has since December 7, 2024, when the elections took place, been without a Parliamentary candidate.

Following a petition to the High Court, the EC was ordered on January 4, 2025, to go ahead with the coalition and declare the winner. The EC decided to do a re-run for the 19 polling stations whose results were affected by rigging and violence. This decision was strongly contested by the NPP as they claimed to have won the seat but the decision of the EC prevailed. The re-run elections took place on July 11 across the said 19 polling stations.

At Odorkor Methodist 1, one of the selected 19 polling stations, Hawa Koomson, NPP candidate and former MP for Awutu Senya Constituency in the central region of Ghana, was assaulted by a group of thugs, whose identities are unknown. However, videos of the incident revealed her spraying something, possibly a pepper spray, into the eyes of individuals who rushed towards her. This goes to solidify the notion that she had anticipated such an incident occurring.

At St. Peter’s polling station, Nana Akua Owusu Afiriyie, NPP candidate and former MP for Ablekuma North, was also assaulted by a number of thugs. Dennis Miracle Aboagye, also of the NPP, narrowly escaped an attack. The police managed to restore calm after the surprise attack. The NPP accordingly accused the thugs of acting on the instructions of the NDC, the incumbent political party.

However, there was a swift turn of events when the EC declared that the Ablekuma North seat, which had not been held by an NDC candidate under the current Constitution, recorded the first victory for the NDC candidate. Ewurabena Aubyn won by 209 votes and increased the parliamentary seats of the NDC from 183 to 184. This has given the NDC a two-thirds majority in Parliament, the first ever recorded in the country.

CODEO’s condemnation underscores the growing concerns over the erosion of electoral norms in Ghana. While Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution mandates the adoption of universal adult suffrage in general elections, incidents of rigging and political violence continues to threaten the legitimacy of the outcome of the democratic process.

The incident on July 11 serves as a critical reminder of the need for institutional reforms, effective policing and a renewed commitment to peaceful and credible elections. This would essentially synchronize with the increasing demand for accountability from the Ghanaian citizenry which has in recent years defied the customary outcomes of its electoral process, counting down from a split Parliament in 2020 to a straight two-thirds majority for the incumbent political party, the first of its kind.

At this point in Ghana’s constitutional history, violence in elections would be fatal to the realization of the country’s dream and ought to end immediately.

‘Deal with galamsey, the situation is urgent’ – National House of Chiefs president to Mahama

0

The National House of Chiefs has made a passionate appeal to President John Mahama to take immediate and decisive action against the growing scourge of illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.

It warns that the health of newborns and communities is at stake.

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the National House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of Sefwi Anhwiaso in the Western North Region, raised the issue during a durbar held as part of President Mahama’s ‘Thank You Tour’ of the region on Tuesday, July 15.

He described the situation as dire, with illegal mining activities severely polluting water bodies and exposing entire communities to dangerous health risks.

“Galamsey is seriously impacting our water bodies and causing illnesses,” Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II said.

“I know the President has made several commitments to fight this menace. We acknowledge your efforts, but the situation is urgent. We must curb galamsey now to prevent the outbreak of disease.”

He revealed that health facilities in affected areas are seeing rising cases of illness, especially among pregnant women and unborn children. “Health facilities are recording complications affecting fetuses,” he said, underscoring the depth of the crisis.

Calling for stronger government resolve, the National House of Chiefs pledged its unflinching support in the battle against galamsey.

“We, as chiefs, promise to support you in curbing the menace,” Ogyeahoho declared.

Ghana champions youth skills with national dialogue and launch of TVET Week 2025

0

The Ghana TVET Service, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, today hosted a high-level national dialogue to mark World Youth Skills Day 2025 at the Accra Technical Training Institute (ATTI) Dome in Kokomlemle.

The celebration was held under the theme: “Youth Empowerment Through AI and Digitalisation – The Role of Technology in Hands-On Skills for the Future Workforce.”

The event witnessed the presence of several distinguished guests and policy leaders, including Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Deputy Chief of Staff at the Office of the President as the Guest of Honour; Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Education (Keynote Speaker); Dr. Eric Kofi Adzroe, Director-General of the Ghana TVET Service; and Osman Ayariga, CEO of the National Youth Authority. Also present at the event were representatives from the EU, GIZ, UNESCO, UNICEF, the British Council, T-TEL, other development partners, academia, and private sector institutions driving towards an engaging and forward-looking national conversation on hands-on skills.

In a symbolic and strategic move, the day also witnessed the official launch of the National TVET Week, a flagship initiative designed to reposition Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a critical lever for Ghana’s industrialisation and youth empowerment agenda.

Delivering the keynote address, Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Education, underscored the urgent need to reframe national perceptions of TVET and to recognise it as a vehicle for transformation.

“TVET is not a second option. It is a first-class solution to unemployment, underemployment, and the future of decent work,” he declared.

“It is also our policy and agenda, to reform the TVET system to integrate emerging digital skill sets. With Artificial Intelligence taking over and changing learning in classrooms and how business is being done, it is imperative to incorporate same into our developmental agenda for TVET.”

He further announced plans to scale the National Apprenticeship Programme, providing free technical training, certification, and start-up support for young artisans across various trades. The programme, he noted, will also feature a Business Growth Apprenticeship module, designed to help graduates transition from trainees to employers.

The Director-General of Ghana TVET Service, Dr. Eric Kofi Adzroe, in his remarks, highlighted the significance of the dual celebration, describing the launch of National TVET Week on World Youth Skills Day as both timely and symbolic.

“The National TVET Week celebration, ladies and gentlemen, is positioned to enhance the image and perception surrounding technical education, strengthen national awareness and trust in TVET, promote Competency-Based Training (CBT) nationwide, deepen industry-academia-learner collaboration, encourage female enrolment and gender mainstreaming and position TVET for international partnerships and funding.”

He emphasised the power of partnerships and the importance of rebranding TVET beyond outdated stereotypes.

“In the face of this transformation, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) must also evolve. It is no longer sufficient for TVET systems to merely respond to changes in the labour market; rather, they must become proactive, forward-looking engines of innovation. We must build agile TVET frameworks that can anticipate emerging trends and equip learners with the competencies needed for the jobs of tomorrow.” he said.

The dialogue explored critical issues shaping the national and global skills landscape, including:

  • Embedding artificial intelligence and digitalisation in curriculum and training delivery,
  • Advancing technical and digital competencies for youth employability,
  • Promoting inclusive participation and gender equity in TVET,
  • Strengthening public-private linkages and work-based learning systems,
  • And fostering innovation and youth-led entrepreneurship.

Throughout the event, students and trainees exhibited their talents in areas such as robotics, precision engineering, agritech, ICT, and creative design. Industry stakeholders and academia participated in practical dialogue sessions on how best to embed digital and green competencies into the national training curriculum.

In her speech, the Guest of Honor, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo highlighted the government’s commitment towards the speedy development of future-ready workforce. Through a range of interventions, she mentioned the government is working to make digital skills and technical education accessible to all.

She also said “We have secured a €5 million grant from the Italian government to strengthen TVET in Ghana. This funding is crucial for equipping more young people with employable skills and promoting entrepreneurship across the country. The National Apprenticeship Programme has also begun, with 10,000 apprentices set to benefit this year. From 2026, the programme will scale up to support 100,000 young people annually. Backed by a GHS 300 million allocation in the 2025 budget, the programme covers both training and monthly stipends, while targeting practical, market relevant skills.”

She ended by reaffirming the government’s shared commitment to youth development and skills transformation. She said,” let us shape a Ghana where every young person can dream, build, and thrive, not despite the future, but because they are equipped to own it.”

The celebration formed part of the broader collaboration objectives with development partners like the Pact for Skills: Support to the Transformation of the TVET System in Ghana  project co-financed by the German Development Cooperation (BMZ) and the European Union, and implemented by GIZ, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Commission for TVET, and the Ghana TVET Service.

In a powerful close, the Minister for Education reiterated government’s unwavering focus on youth development and national competitiveness through TVET:“This is the age of the skilled and the self-reliant. Our young people are not looking for sympathy they are looking for tools, platforms, and recognition. And through this renewed focus on skills, we will give them all three. I also used the opportunity to highlight Ghana’s progress in TVET reforms and the plans we have advanced here to modernize our training facilities, increase access to vocational education, and align skills development with industry demands. These, ladies and gentlemen, are being done with the blessing of His Excellency, President Mahama to actualize his vision of restoring the country on the right path.

The event concluded with a strong call for support from corporate organisations, development partners, and donor agencies towards National TVET Week 2025, which promises to be a nationwide celebration of skills, creativity, and opportunity.

Ex-Nigeria President Buhari buried at home

0

Mourners, including traditional leaders were waiting for the body to be brought to Buhari's home Mourners, including traditional leaders were waiting for the body to be brought to Buhari’s home

Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari was buried at his home in northern Nigeria two days after his death at the age of 82 at a clinic in London.

His body was flown back to the country earlier on Tuesday, and his successor, Bola Tinubu, was at the airport in Katsina state to receive the remains.

It was then taken to Buhari’s hometown of Daura, where, with hundreds attending, Islamic funeral prayers were held at the central mosque.

His body was finally interred in a grave dug in the grounds of his home with dignitaries, including Tinubu, Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and Buhari’s Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, present.

Just before the burial, military gunshots were fired, and the Nigerian flag used to cover the corpse was removed, folded, and handed over to the former leader’s family.

The government had declared Tuesday a public holiday to honour Buhari, who was also a former army general, one of only two Nigerians to have led the country as both a military leader and a democratically elected president.

Officials say the funeral, initially expected on Monday, was delayed for logistical reasons.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who accompanied the late leader’s corpse back to Nigeria, stated that Buhari had died after a brief illness without revealing any further details.

Tributes poured in for the late leader who served for two four-year terms after initially being elected president in 2015, becoming the first opposition leader to defeat an incumbent.

The man he beat, President Goodluck Jonathan, described Buhari as someone who “was selfless in his commitment to his duty and served the country with character and a deep sense of patriotism”.

Former military ruler, Gen Ibrahim Babangida, who overthrew Buhari in a 1985 coup, also showered praise on the octogenarian.

“He is a man who, even in retirement, remained a moral compass to many, and an example of modesty in public life,” Babangida noted.

Tinubu, who will attend the funeral prayer in Daura, declared a seven-day national mourning period in honour of his predecessor.

In an official condolence statement released on Sunday evening, Tinubu said the nation would pay its final respects to the former leader with dignity and honour, starting with the lowering of all national flags to half-mast across the country from Sunday.

Hanna Bisiw recounts how Hawa Koomson attacked her with 30 men

0

Dr. Hanna Louisa Bisiw-Kotei, National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has alleged that former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson led a group of about 30 men to physically assault her during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in 2019.

Her comments come in the wake of a recent incident at the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, where Hawa Koomson was reportedly attacked by unidentified men at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station. The violence disrupted the voting process briefly before calm was restored.

Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, July 15, Dr. Bisiw-Kotei said she felt no sympathy for the former Minister, recalling her own harrowing experience during the 2019 by-election at the Legon Polling Station B, where she was serving as an NDC polling agent.

“I don’t care what happened to her,” Bisiw-Kotei said bluntly.

She claimed that shortly after her arrival at the polling station, Hawa Koomson arrived with about 30 men and confronted her directly.

“We were there when Hawa Koomson led a team of about 30 men to my centre. And Hawa Koomson, these were her words: ‘What are you doing here? Are you the one who has been spewing nonsense on TV and Radio?’ This is Hanna Bisiw—beat her—and these men started, and she stood aside.”

According to Dr. Bisiw-Kotei, the sudden violence sent Electoral Commission officials fleeing with their materials, while police officers intervened to extract her from the scene.

“When it started, the Electoral Commission agents picked up their materials, and people ran. And the policemen picked me over the wall, and another one held me from the back.”

“I had gone there with my Land Cruiser and parked under a tree. Then we changed the Land Cruiser to a Prado, not knowing they had been monitoring the Land Cruiser.

“So, immediately the police picked me up, they thought I was going to the Land Cruiser. They ran towards the Land Cruiser, including Hawa Koomson. They realised I was going to the other side—it was like a movie. They ran back. The police said, ‘Madam, run,’ and three of them were able to get to the car before I got in—they started again.”

Dr. Bisiw-Kotei added that her cousin, the NDC Constituency Chairman for Tano South, was also assaulted while trying to shield her.

“When I got in the car, I pulled my seat belt, and the constituency chairman of Tano South is my cousin. All his t-shirt was torn into pieces when he attempted to prevent them.”

The National House of Chiefs has urged President John Dramani Mahama to intensify efforts to address illegal mining activities otherwise known as galamsey in the country.

Speaking at a durbar during the president’s “Thank You Tour” of the Western North Region, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the National House of Chiefs expressed worry over the health risks posed by galamsey.

“Galamsey is seriously impacting our water bodies and causing illnesses. I know the President has made several commitments to fight this menace. We acknowledge your efforts, but the situation is urgent. We must tackle galamsey now to prevent the outbreak of diseases,” he said.

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II further pledged the support of traditional authorities in combating the menace.

“We, as chiefs, promise to support you in curbing the menace,” he added.

Despite efforts by successive governments, galamsey continues to wreak havoc on communities in the country, polluting water bodies, endangering livelihoods and the environment.

Mahama and NDC govt’s first six months just ‘testing waters’

Former Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso Constituency, Kennedy Kankam Former Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso Constituency, Kennedy Kankam

Former Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso Constituency, Kennedy Kankam, has criticized the John Dramani Mahama-led administration, saying it has done nothing tangible to warrant praise.

According to him, the first six months of the government’s administration have been more like “testing waters” with policies aimed at gaining social support.

Mr Kankam noted that the president has not embarked on any significant infrastructure projects, which he believes are crucial for engineering growth in the country.

Speaking on OTEC 102.9 FM’s “Dwabrem” show, on Tuesday July 15,2025 hosted by Prince Nii Ardey aka Dr Cash, Mr Kankam expressed disappointment that Ghanaians are yet to see any tangible impact of the NDC administration.

The former MP also poked holes in the NDC’s claims of economic growth, pointing out the inconsistency in their argument that six months is too short a time to judge their performance, yet they sing praises of non-existent economic progress.

He called on the government to sit up and rolled out pragmatic policies that will improve the living conditions of the public.

NPP General Secretary addresses Kufuor’s claims of being sidelined by party

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor Former President John Agyekum Kufuor

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has dismissed claims by former President John Agyekum Kufuor that the party has sidelined him in its activities.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on July 14, 2025, Kodua described the assertion as false, insisting that the video in which Kufuor allegedly made the claim was an old interview that had been edited and circulated in the public domain.

According to him, Kufuor remains an integral part of the party’s leadership structure, serving as a member of both the National Executive Committee and the National Council.

He added that Kufuor has representatives on the two executive committees who receive invitations on his behalf.

“Under the Fourth Republic, the man who first secured power for us was Kufuor, and we are proud of him as a former statesman. There is no way we would do anything and fail to inform him.

“Our party constitution makes all past presidents’ members of the National Executive Committee. When it comes to the National Council, all past presidents are also part. Anytime we have meetings, we invite them.

“For former President Kufuor, he has two aides, Araba Bosompem and Adu Acheampong. Every meeting we hold, we serve them notice, and they acknowledge receipt,” Kodua explained.

He further questioned the timing of the video, suggesting it was not a recent interview.

“The video raises questions because former President Kufuor is not even in the country at the moment. I can tell you that the video was recorded before the NPP launched the Patriotic Institute,” he added.

It may be recalled that in a reflective conversation with Abetifi MP and NPP flagbearer hopeful Bryan Acheampong, former President Kufuor had expressed a sense of growing marginalization within the party.

He lamented the lack of engagement from the current party leadership, stating that despite his contributions and institutional memory, he is now being kept in the dark about key party developments.

100 Most Notable Peace Icons Africa appoints Bright K. Asiamah as Country Director of Ghana – GBC Ghana Online

0

By: Love Wilhelmina Abanonave

Kigali played host to one of Africa’s most distinguished gatherings — the 100 Most Notable Africans Business & Leadership Summit from 4th to 6th July, 2025. This high-level event brought together transformational leaders, diplomats, changemakers, and innovators from across the continent to celebrate the power of visionary leadership, peacebuilding, and economic advancement.

Among the most significant outcomes of the summit was the official appointment of Bright Kosi Asiamah as the Country Director of Ghana for the 100 Most Notable Peace Icons Africa — an honour that places Ghana at the forefront of peace-driven leadership across the continent.

Mr. Asiamah joins a prestigious cohort of newly appointed Country Directors representing key African nations, including Morocco, Nigeria, Tanzania, Gambia, Rwanda, Zambia, South Africa, and Kenya.

Their collective mandate is to serve as national coordinators and ambassadors of peace, spotlighting individuals and organizations who demonstrate unwavering commitment to conflict resolution, community empowerment, and sustainable development.

Speaking after his appointment, Mr. Asiamah expressed profound gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed his dedication to promoting peace, unity, and purposeful leadership in Ghana and beyond.

“This appointment is not just a personal milestone, it’s a national call to action. Ghana has long been a beacon of stability in the region, and this role gives me a unique platform to showcase and empower peacebuilders across our country. I am deeply honored and equally challenged to ensure that Ghana’s story continues to be told as one of resilience, leadership, and unity’’, he said.

The 3-day summit in Kigali was more than just an award ceremony; it was a melting pot of ideas and networking for Africa’s emerging and established leaders. Panel discussions ranged from peace diplomacy and inclusive governance to youth innovation and intra-African trade.

The summit also celebrated the impact of individuals and institutions that have played critical roles in mediating conflicts and building communities through ethical leadership.

Participants included former heads of state, international peace advocates, entrepreneurs, and civil society actors.

The appointment ceremony was conducted in the presence of notable dignitaries, political heads across Africa, further validating the importance of the roles entrusted to each Country Director.

What This Appointment Means for Ghana

As Country Director, Mr. Bright Kosi Asiamah is tasked with several key responsibilities:

(a) Identifying and nominating peace icons in Ghana who are making a difference through community development, education, human rights advocacy, and non-violent activism.
(b) Building partnerships with local institutions to amplify peace-related initiatives.
(c) Hosting national programs that align with the continental agenda of 100 Most Notable Peace Icons Africa.
(d) Creating visibility for Ghanaian leaders on a global stage through documentation and awards.
This appointment also positions Ghana to take a more active role in pan-African peace advocacy and youth empowerment.

The next edition of the 100 Most Notable Africans Business & Leadership event will be held in Morocco in 2026, and plans are already underway to ensure greater representation from Ghana. Mr. Asiamah is calling on individuals, NGOs, government agencies, educational institutions, and peace ambassadors to get involved.

“We want to see more Ghanaians recognized and celebrated in Morocco. If you or your organization are actively working to promote peace, resolve conflict, uplift the vulnerable, or transform your community, then the 2026 summit is your platform,” he said.

A national nomination drive and call for submissions will be announced in the coming months. The goal is to ensure inclusive participation, especially from regions and communities that are often underrepresented in global peacebuilding conversations.

With Mr. Bright Kosi Asiamah now representing Ghana on this continental platform, a new chapter of advocacy, collaboration, and visibility for Ghana’s peacebuilders has begun. As the world increasingly looks to Africa for solutions rooted in cultural intelligence and resilience, this appointment is a signal that Ghana is ready to lead from the front with peace as its core message.

Tano North NDC demands immediate removal of MCE over alleged nepotism

Tano North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Pious Opoku Tano North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Pious Opoku

Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from the Bomaa Branch in the Tano North Constituency of the Bono Region have held a press conference demanding the immediate removal of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Pious Opoku.

The gathering, which took place on Tuesday, July 15, in front of the party office, addressed growing concerns about alleged nepotism in appointments within the Municipal Assembly.

The NDC members accused the MCE of persistently appointing friends and family members to key positions, including the School Feeding Coordinator and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Coordinator.

They alleged that deserving and qualified locals have been overlooked, creating an atmosphere of mistrust and discontent within the community.

“Many of our leaders have been treated poorly, with some even forced to sleep in the bush due to the MCE’s actions,” a spokesperson for the Bomaa Branch, Hon Zack, stated during the press conference.

“We have worked hard for our community and believe we deserve better representation.”

The group is calling for urgent intervention from President John Mahama and the Minister for Local Government.

They have issued a two-week ultimatum for the government to address their concerns, warning that failure to act will result in a demonstration.

“We are prepared to take our fight to the streets if necessary,” the spokesperson added. “This situation cannot continue, and we will not sit idly by while our community suffers.”
