As conflict continues to uproot communities across the Central Sahel, the European Union (EU) has
announced €10 million in new funding to support forcibly displaced people and the communities hosting them in the neighbouring coastal countries of Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Togo.
The funding is part of a broader regional initiative called “Unite”, aimed at strengthening the resilience of both displaced populations and their host communities.
Over the next two years, the project will be jointly implemented by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP), in partnership with national and local partners.
In April 2021, Côte d’Ivoire became the first coastal country to start receiving people fleeing insecurity and violence in the Central Sahel.
Over the past few years, Benin, Ghana, and Togo have also received thousands of displaced people.
Currently, the northern regions of Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, Togo, and Ghana host around 160,000 refugees and asylum seekers, mostly from Burkina Faso.
Internal displacement is also growing in parts of the northern areas of Togo and Benin. Many of these communities already face severe challenges, including poverty and limited access to basic services.
The EU support is based on the Gulf of Guinea Joint Response Plan, in which the four UN agencies provide support to asylum seekers, refugees, and members of the host communities.
Under the Joint Response Plan, Project Unite’s partners will work together to ensure that forcibly displaced populations and host communities have effective and equitable access to essential socio-economic services.
It also includes sustainable livelihood opportunities, thereby complementing humanitarian interventions with development-focused approaches.
Through this joint effort, the four UN agencies will deliver coordinated support across key areas.
IOM will support local food systems by strengthening smallholder farms and livestock cooperatives while also improving data collection on movements and the needs of displaced people and host communities.
UNHCR will lead on collecting and analysing socio-economic data to improve access to national services such as education, health, and livelihoods for refugees and asylum seekers.
It will also prioritise access to safe, dignified, climate-resilient, and appropriate housing for the most vulnerable, alongside expanding access to electricity and clean cooking solutions in underserved communities.
UNICEF will improve access to quality, safe, and inclusive education for displaced children while strengthening access to safe water, child protection services, prevention of gender-based violence, and safeguards against sexual exploitation and abuse.
The organisation will also promote continued learning and build local capacity to foster social cohesion.
WFP will implement community-based projects that engage displaced and host populations in climate-resilient agriculture, asset creation, and nutrition-sensitive livelihoods.
Through multipurpose cash transfers, women’s empowerment, and local food systems, these activities promote self-reliance and social cohesion. School feeding, cooperative strengthening, and real-time food security monitoring will support inclusive recovery and long-term resilience.
Francesca Di Mauro, Ambassador of the European Union in Côte d’Ivoire, emphasised the EU’s solidarity with displaced people and their hosts.
“Our support aims not only to address urgent humanitarian needs but also to build long-term resilience for both displaced populations and host communities.
Through Project Unite, we reaffirm our commitment to regional stability, protection of human rights, and inclusive development in West Africa.”
Olivier Beer, Representative of UNHCR Multi-Country offices of Côte d’lvoire, welcomed the EU’s contribution, “As the influx of displaced persons continues, we commend the EU’s support for these essential protection activities. Registering asylum seekers and refugees, collecting socio-economic data for inclusive development and increasing the resilience of host and refugee communities are fundamental to ensuring both protection and stability”.

Assistant Commissioner Theresa Potakey, Tema Sector Commander, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Customs, says the Tema Port is on its way to full preparedness for the implementation of the 24-hour operations.
President John Dramani Mahama recently announced that the Tema and Takoradi ports would soon be declared 24-hour operational ports as part of the government’s 24-hour economy initiative aimed at boosting productivity and economic growth.
Assistant Commissioner Potakey, speaking at a Customs Joint Consultative Committee meeting in Tema, said the initiative was crucial for enhancing the competitiveness of the ports and ensuring that they operated at their maximum capacity, mirroring global best practices.
“In line with this, I can assure you that Tema port is well on its way to full preparedness for this 24-hour economy. Significant strides have been made in terms of infrastructure, technology, and human resource deployment to ensure a seamless transition and sustain efficiency around the clock,” she stated.
She added that the initiative would not only boost trade but also create more opportunities within the port ecosystem.
The Tema Sector Customs Commander said the board of GRA had approved the transfer of more officers to augment the staff strength in Tema in readiness of the implementation.
“We have the men; that’s all we need to work. Our officers are ready; they are gearing up to come, and I am ready to accept them and give them the necessary orientation, so we hope the other stakeholders, like GPHA, are also ready,” she said.

The payment was made in phases, as the impersonator provided what seemed like credible updates and documentation. Lil Win even shared parts of their chat history with fans, emphasizing how real everything felt at the time.
However, hope soon turned to horror. The so-called movie star vanished. All attempts to reach him by phone failed, and his WhatsApp status went cold. In a follow-up TikTok live session, Lil Win appeared visibly distressed and in tears as he recounted how he had been manipulated and betrayed. June 22 (BBC/GNA) – Donald Trump says the US has completed strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordo, Natanz and Esfahan.

As the BBC reported earlier, US B-2 stealth bombers had reportedly been moved to the US island territory of Guam, prompting speculation that the aircraft could be involved in a US strike on Iran.
The deputy political director of Iran’s state broadcaster, Hassan Abedini, has appeared live on state TV just now.
He says Iran evacuated these three nuclear sites a “while ago”.
He also says that even if what Trump says is true, Iran “didn’t suffer a major blow because the materials had already been taken out”.

The Central North Regional Police Command has dealt a significant blow to the illegal mining (galamsey) activities and associated illicit drug trade at Ayanfuri, leading to the apprehension of eight individuals.
This operation underscores the command’s sustained, frontline efforts in the national battle against environmental degradation and organised crime.
Among those taken into custody were five Ghanaian nationals: Isaac Odum (39) and Lazarus Sango (44), who are suspected to be the site’s primary operators, along with Stephen Nkrumah (30), Kofi Emmanuel (23), and John Nkrumah (27).
The joint operation also netted three Burkinabe nationals: Sulemana Naaba (36), Benjamin Adibanga (29), and Iddis Rogo (30), highlighting the transnational dimension of illegal mining in Ghana.
During the raid, law enforcement officers seized crucial equipment indicative of illicit mining activities, including five pumping machines, two rubber bowls filled with sand (likely gold-bearing ore), a gasoline generator, and a gallon of cyanide.
The presence of cyanide, a highly toxic chemical, is particularly alarming, as its unregulated use in galamsey operations poses severe threats to human health and the pollution of water bodies, a pervasive issue that has already rendered over 60% of Ghana’s rivers unfit for consumption.
At a press conference following the arrests, DCOP Abraham Acquaye, the Central North Regional Police Commander, affirmed that all suspects are currently in police custody and will face arraignment in court for further legal action.
However, DCOP Acquaye highlighted a significant hurdle impeding the command’s anti-galamsey efforts: the prolonged inactivity of the Assin Fosu District Court.
“The Central North Regional Command’s efforts to combat illegal mining are being hindered by the inactivity of the Assin Fosu District Court, which has been non-operational for over four months due to the judge’s indisposition,” DCOP Acquaye disclosed.
This judicial bottleneck forces the police to grant bail to galamsey suspects, a frustrating outcome for officers striving to bring environmental offenders to justice.
Judicial delays in galamsey cases are a nationwide concern, with the Ghana Chamber of Mines and the Judicial Training Institute recently collaborating to expedite such trials, acknowledging the severe impact of slow justice on environmental protection and public trust.
Despite this challenge, DCOP Acquaye assured the public that the command remains unyielding in its commitment to cracking down on galamsey in the area.
Reinforcing this resolve, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a contingent of over 60 additional personnel from the National Headquarters to bolster the Central North Regional Command’s capacity in combating the pervasive menace of illegal mining.
DCOP Acquaye concluded by appealing to the public for their crucial support, urging them to provide timely intelligence that can aid law enforcement in clamping down on galamsey and other related criminal activities, including the burgeoning issue of drug trafficking, often intertwined with illegal mining operations.

The global footballers’ union, FIFPRO, has thrown its weight in support of former Cameroon international Geremi Njitap, days after the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) imposed a five-year ban on the ex-Chelsea star for alleged misconduct.
In a statement dated 21 June 2025, FIFPRO declared it “stands in full support of Geremi Njitap, president of the Cameroon players union SYNAFOC and member of FIFPRO’s global board,” as well as SYNAFOC General Secretary Daniel Blaise Ngos, who was also sanctioned by FECAFOOT with a two-year ban and a fine of $8,250.
FECAFOOT’s sanctions stem from a reported altercation involving Geremi during Cameroon’s match against Gambia at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
The former midfielder allegedly clashed with a member of federation president Samuel Eto’o’s team and was forcibly removed by security on orders from FECAFOOT officials.
Geremi was later found guilty by the federation’s ethics committee of violating behaviour codes and was handed a five-year suspension and a $16,500 fine.
In response, FIFPRO expressed deep concern over what it sees as an emerging pattern of abuse within some African football associations.
“FIFPRO is concerned that this case is part of a wider trend where football authorities misuse internal disciplinary structures to target player unions and their leaders,” the statement read.
“This undermines the rights of players to organise independently and weakens accountability in the sport.”
The world union further criticised FECAFOOT’s decision to replace SYNAFOC Cameroon’s long-recognised player union with a newly formed body “that does not reflect the voice or interests of the country’s players.”
FIFPRO has now called on world football’s governing bodies to intervene.
“We call on FIFA and CAF to closely examine the situation in Cameroon and take appropriate steps to uphold governance standards, protect the rights of players, and ensure that union leaders are not subject to politically motivated retaliation.”
The organisation, which represents more than 70,000 professional footballers through over 72 national player unions globally, reaffirmed its commitment to “defending their rights and supporting their legitimate representatives.”
Geremi is said to be preparing an appeal and may take his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in an attempt to overturn or reduce the sanctions.

Lucky Mensah added that one of the defining moments of his life was when he traveled to the United Kingdom for a show and decided to stay for an extra two years to work. That decision, though tough, proved to be the financial breakthrough he needed.
“I worked hard in the UK, saved money, and came back home to begin my building project. That was a turning point,” he shared.
He further mentioned that the contribution and belief of his wife can never be left out of his success story.
Lucky Mensah expressed deep gratitude to her for believing in his vision when things were rough. He recalled how she courageously followed him to live in an uncompleted building they had started in an undeveloped area—now famously known as “Lucky Mensah.”
According to him, if his wife hadn’t supported that decision and sacrificed her comfort, the dream might never have materialized.
Fredrick Addy MP for Suaman Constituency
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah has outlined the government’s immediate plans to combat illegal mining in the Suaman Dadieso constituency and other affected areas.
He made this statement in response to a query raised from the Member of Parliament (MP) for Suaman Dadieso Constituency, Frederick Addy, on Friday, June 20, 2025, regarding the ministry’s efforts to combat illegal mining in the constituency, following a tragic incident on March 14, 2025, where two lives were lost in a ‘galamsey’ pit at Karlo.
According to him, the ministry has collaborated with the district assemblies to fish out the “faceless” individuals involved in the illegal mining to make sure they are held accountable, punished and require to rehabilitate the areas they have destroyed in order to serve as a lesson to others.
“Those faceless people who engage in illegal mining are unknown and so we will continue to work with the district authorities to apprehend them and make sure they are punished and also make sure we will get them to recover these areas and will continue to do so,” he asserted.
The minister also mentioned that, the ministry is actively undertaking efforts to restore degraded lands and replant vegetation in areas impacted by the galamsey activities.
“Immediate measures are being put in place to curb that menace, the government is engaging is reclamation and revegetation program of the illegally mined out areas in the constituency and other affected areas to avaoid such occurrences,” he noted.
He further stated that, public awareness initiatives will be implemented by the ministry, through district assemblies and traditional councils, to inform and involve local communities.
He added that, the ministry is targeting areas with high mineral potential, identified through geological surveys, to ensure miners work in a safe and profitable environment reducing the risks associated with unregulated digging.
“We are also focusing on geological investigated areas with very good prospects and to ensure that the miners will get mined out areas that are very lucrative for them to mine so that we can prevent this random digging risk we face,” he assured.
The minister also committed to tightening mining licenses and regulations to prevent illegal activities.

Assistant Commissioner Theresa Potakey, Tema Sector Commander, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Customs, says the Tema Port is on its way to full preparedness for the implementation of the 24-hour operations.
President John Dramani Mahama recently announced that the Tema and Takoradi ports would soon be declared 24-hour operational ports as part of the government’s 24-hour economy initiative aimed at boosting productivity and economic growth.
Assistant Commissioner Potakey, speaking at a Customs Joint Consultative Committee meeting in Tema, said the initiative was crucial for enhancing the competitiveness of the ports and ensuring that they operated at their maximum capacity, mirroring global best practices.
“In line with this, I can assure you that Tema port is well on its way to full preparedness for this 24-hour economy. Significant strides have been made in terms of infrastructure, technology, and human resource deployment to ensure a seamless transition and sustain efficiency around the clock,” she stated.
She added that the initiative would not only boost trade but also create more opportunities within the port ecosystem.
The Tema Sector Customs Commander said the board of GRA had approved the transfer of more officers to augment the staff strength in Tema in readiness of the implementation.
“We have the men; that’s all we need to work. Our officers are ready; they are gearing up to come, and I am ready to accept them and give them the necessary orientation, so we hope the other stakeholders, like GPHA, are also ready,” she said.
According to her, some shipping lines have also given the assurance to work 24 hours, adding, however, that with stakeholders such as the GPHA, most of the things needed are capital intensive, such as properly lit terminals and eateries for those who would work during the night.

Speaking to Akoma FM, the former Right to Dream Academy coach confirmed his interest but stressed that any move depends on successful negotiations.

Cameroon football legend Geremi Njitap has been banned from all football-related activities for five years by the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), following a disciplinary dispute with the federation’s president, Samuel Eto’o.
He has also been fined $16,500.
The decision, announced this week, marks a dramatic escalation in tensions between two of the country’s most iconic former players, and has drawn widespread attention from football communities across Africa and beyond.
Geremi, 46, a former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder, is among Cameroon’s most celebrated footballers, having earned 118 caps — the joint-second highest in national history.
He was part of Cameroon’s 2008 AFCON team that reached the final in Ghana.
Njitap was also a member of Chelsea’s Premier League-winning squads in 2005 and 2006.
In 2017, Geremi said in an interview with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai that, “…I am a bit fed up with football so I don’t follow football anymore.”
He, however, transitioned into football administration, serving as the president of the National Union of Footballers of Cameroon (Synafoc), an organisation representing players’ rights.
His relationship with Eto’o, now head of FECAFOOT, deteriorated sharply which led to an altercation between the two per local media reports.
The fallout dates back to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, during a tense group-stage match between Cameroon and The Gambia.
Geremi was reportedly involved in a heated altercation with a member of Eto’o’s inner circle. Security had to intervene, with reports from Yaoundé claiming he was forcibly removed from the stadium at the instruction of federation officials.
In a formal statement released by FECAFOOT’s ethics committee, Geremi was declared guilty of “violating the behavioural code outlined in the federation’s ethics regulations.” As a result, he has been banned from all football activities for five years and fined 10 million Central African CFA francs (approx. $16,500).
He has been given 10 days to lodge an official appeal. Sources close to the former midfielder indicate he is considering taking the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland.
Daniel Blaise Ngos, Geremi’s assistant at Synafoc, was also penalised, receiving a two-year ban and a fine of $8,250.
Critics claim it’s move to end Njitap’s presidential ambitions as he’s believed to be nursing his way to ascending the throne of football leadership in the country.

Celebrated Ghanaian media personality and broadcaster Anita Erskine has disclosed that her first appearance on television was at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
Speaking to Kafui Dey on the GTV Breakfast Show on Friday, 20 June 2025, Anita shared memories of her early days in the media industry, which began almost 30 years ago.
“My first experience with television was right here at GBC,” she said. “It wasn’t By the Fireside, but it was with Uncle George. I had just started learning how all of this works.”
Born Vered Marian Anita Erskine, she is now a leading figure in Ghanaian and African media. She began her career behind the scenes, working in the music library, where she helped sort and select music. “Chris and I had to listen to CDs before we submitted them,” she recalled.
She later moved to Metro TV, still working off-camera. “Metro was the same. I was never right in front of the camera. You always worked behind it,” she said. “I started from the library, writing synopses and working with the MCR (Master Control Room) team—camera, sound, everything. These were the people who helped me build my foundation.”
Reflecting on her journey, Anita noted that 2026 will mark 30 years since she entered the broadcasting world. “Next year will be 30 years in broadcasting,” she said. “By God’s grace, three decades.”

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed celebrated veteran actress Kalsoume Sinare as ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain.
The appointment is however subject to parliamentary approval.
According to a letter from the Office of the President dated June 10, 2025, and signed by Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, PhD, these nominations were made after consultations with the Council of State, in accordance with Article 74 of the 1992 Constitution.
Kalsoume Sinare has appeared in over fifty films, including Babina, Trinity, and Sala, for which she received a Golden Actress award in the Drama category.
Sinare was the first of nine children in her family. She attended Accra High School, after which she started her entertainment career as a model.
She represented Ghana at the 1990 Miss Model of the World pageant, and regularly appeared on television as a commercial model for consumer products.
Sinare made her acting debut in the stage production Theatre Mirrors, then began her film career in 1993 in Out of Sight.
She became “immensely popular” in Ghana after she played the lead role in Babina, a religiously-themed horror film.
She has appeared in over fifty films, including 4ever Young.
The Five Brides, and The New Sun. Her role in the 2010 film Trinity earned a Zulu African Film Academy Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actress as well as a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Ghana Movie Awards.

He has publicly supported the National Democratic Congress in Ghanaian elections, and participated in the 2013 inauguration ceremony for John Mahama, whom she endorsed again in 2016.
She is the sister of Ghanaian politician and former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Said Sinare.

A patient suffering from MPox disease
The Western Regional Health Directorate has activated its public health emergency response system following a significant increase in monkeypox cases, which currently account for 71% of all confirmed cases nationwide.
The alarming statistics were disclosed by health officials during the Western Regional Development Retreat, held in Essipong, Sekondi-Takoradi, on Saturday, June 21. Kwadwo Okyere Apenteng, the Regional Health Directorate’s Chief Pharmacist, made the announcement on behalf of the Regional Health Director, stating that the Western Region recorded its first case of monkeypox on May 23 in Tarkwa.
“Monkeypox is also in the country, and currently, the Western Region is number one; we have taken over. Seventy-one percent of the cases in the country are coming from the Western Region. As it stands, we have 187 suspected cases and 43 confirmed cases,” he was quoted as saying by citinewsroom.com.
To contain the outbreak and prevent further spread, he added that the Directorate is intensifying surveillance and public education as part of a broader emergency response strategy.
The outbreak has sparked renewed concerns about the region’s healthcare system. Speaking at the same event, Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson stressed the urgent need to complete stalled health infrastructure projects, particularly the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, and to strengthen healthcare delivery systems.
“Our regional hospital in Effia Nkwanta is undergoing some revamping, but as we speak, the work is stalled. I pray that, very soon, work will resume so that we can complete it for the very purpose for which that project was started,” he said.

The Overlord of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, Okyehene Osagyefo Amotia Ofori-Panin’s convoy on Saturday, June 21, 2025, made a majestic entry into Akyem Old Tafo in the Eastern Region to the grand durbar of the Ohumkan Festival celebrated by the chiefs and people of the area.
The Okyenhene who drove in a beautiful and elegant black Rolls Royce was led by his retinue who were in a number of four wheel-drive vehicles including Toyota Land Cruisers and Lexus.
The celebration of the festival coincided with the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Akyem Old Tafo Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV, Omanhene of Akyem Tafo.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has issued a public advisory, debunking widespread social media claims of an ongoing recruitment exercise.
The security agency is urging the Ghanaian public to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, warning against increasingly sophisticated digital scams designed to defraud unsuspecting job seekers.
In a press release on June 20, 2025, the GIS clarified that it is currently not conducting any recruitment drive.
Head of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration, Michael Amoako-Atta, signed the statement, which emphatically directed the public to disregard any such offers circulating online.
The GIS reiterated that all legitimate recruitment announcements will be made exclusively through official print media, specifically the Daily Graphic and Ghanaian Times newspapers, thereby discrediting any information found on social media platforms.
The GIS expressed serious concerns over the burgeoning number of fraudulent recruitment offers, particularly those that illicitly demand payment in exchange for non-existent job opportunities.
This phenomenon exploits the aspirations of Ghana’s youth, a demographic that faces a significant employment challenge, with the youth unemployment rate standing at approximately 14% as of 2024 for those aged 15-35.
These deceptive operations often involve the creation of highly convincing fake social media pages that brazenly impersonate the Ghana Immigration Service, illegally utilising official images and videos to lend an air of authenticity.
Such acts are not merely misrepresentations but constitute serious criminal offences under Ghanaian law, potentially falling under sections related to fraud and impersonation, which carry penalties ranging from fines to considerable prison sentences.
The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) reported significant financial losses to online fraud in Ghana, with GH¢ 4,425,851 lost in the first quarter of 2025 alone from online fraud cases, many of which include job recruitment scams.
The GIS described these fraudulent activities as “criminal” and issued a stern warning to the perpetrators to immediately cease their illegal operations.
With a uniformed force numbering over 11,000 personnel, the Ghana Immigration Service is a consistent target for such impersonations due to its significant role in national security and border management.
Prospective applicants are strongly advised to remain patient and exercise extreme vigilance.
They are urged to report any suspicious recruitment claims directly to the Ghana Police Service or their nearest GIS office.
This proactive stance by the GIS underscores its commitment to protecting citizens from digital fraud and maintaining the integrity of its official processes, especially in an era where countless Ghanaians keenly follow announcements for recruitment into security agencies.

Prominent legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has issued a passionate call for a generational shift in Ghana’s political leadership, arguing that the nation is long overdue for younger leaders at the helm.
Speaking on TV3 on Saturday, June 21, Mr Kpebu asserted that Ghana has seen “enough of the old men” in presidential roles and that the time for a youthful takeover has arrived.
Mr Kpebu’s remarks come amidst discussions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding their flagbearer selection process for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
He contended that both the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP should actively seek and back younger candidates to invigorate the political landscape.
“Young people, it’s time for us to take over this country. Enough of the old men,” Mr Kpebu declared, expressing a sentiment shared by a growing segment of the Ghanaian populace, particularly the nation’s significant youth demographic.
According to Ghana Statistical Service data, individuals aged 15-35 years constituted approximately 37% of the total population of Ghana in 2024, underscoring their potential influence in future elections.

Mr Kpebu criticised the perceived “recycling of ageing political figures” as a hindrance to Ghana’s progress. He specifically took aim at the NPP’s proposed flagbearer election timeline for early 2026, suggesting it smacks of “top-down manipulation”.
He argued that prioritising a flagbearer before internal executive elections at polling stations, constituency, regional, and national levels stifles genuine grassroots participation.
Further, Kpebu challenged the reported internal manoeuvres within the NPP to bolster the candidacy of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He described such tactics as efforts to “maintain the status quo” rather than fostering authentic competition.
“When you look at the way the party is pushing Bawumia forward, it signals that they want the grassroots to just play along. It’s a calculated attempt to preserve the system that benefits the elite,” he stated.
Underscoring his push for youthful leadership, Kpebu questioned Dr. Bawumia’s viability as a 2028 candidate, given he would be in his early sixties, and potentially “too old” to lead by 2032. Ghana’s 1992 Constitution requires presidential candidates to be at least 40 years old.
While current and past presidents in Ghana’s Fourth Republic have generally been in their 50s and 60s at the time of assuming office (e.g., John Kufuor was 62, John Atta Mills 64, Nana Akufo-Addo 72), Mr Kpebu argued that newer generations of voters are unlikely to embrace older candidates.
“Who wants a 69-year-old president in 2032? The Gen Z and Gen Alpha voters are not going to rally behind that,” he asserted.
Recent studies, such as the Ghana Youth Barometer 2024 Report, indicate that a significant portion of Ghanaian youth (aged 15-35) feel their voices are “sidelined” in policy decisions, hinting at a desire for more representative leadership.
Kpebu warned that if the NPP were to field Dr. Bawumia again in 2028, it would effectively hand the NDC an “easy win.”
“It would be a walk in the park for the NDC,” he predicted, implying that a youthful appeal might be the decisive factor in the upcoming electoral cycles.
His comments ignite a critical debate about age, experience, and the future direction of Ghana’s political leadership.

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is sounding the alarm over the inadequate penalties for establishing unauthorised fuel stations, pushing for a legislative review to introduce significantly stiffer fines.
The authority contends that the current fines, pegged at less than GH₵ 20,000, fail to deter illegal operations, posing grave risks to public safety.
Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, voiced the urgent need for more stringent measures during a recent engagement with Parliament’s Energy Committee.
He highlighted the escalating proliferation of unlicensed fuel outlets, some of which have been directly linked to fatal explosions.
“If the penalties are punitive enough, it will discourage those unscrupulous people from setting up filling stations in unauthorised places,” Mr. Tamakloe asserted.

For instance, while failing to obtain authorisation to construct a retail outlet attracts a fine of “5 times construction permit fee,” and selling adulterated products carries a fine not exceeding GH₵ 20,000, these amounts are seen as insufficient deterrents for operators who might earn substantial profits from illicit fuel sales.
The CEO reaffirmed the NPA’s unwavering commitment to tightening the enforcement of safety regulations and actively curbing the establishment of illegal fuel stations nationwide.
Industry experts suggest that a review could see fines increased by as much as 500% or more, coupled with potential custodial sentences, to truly reflect the severity of the offence and the risks involved.
The illegal petroleum business is estimated to cost Ghana significant tax revenue annually, with reports from 2017 indicating losses of around GH₵ 850 million due to smuggling and unapproved sales.
The NPA’s call for legislative action reflects a growing concern about public safety and economic integrity in Ghana’s petroleum sector, pushing Parliament to consider amendments that would equip the Authority with the necessary tools to effectively combat the pervasive issue of illegal fuel stations.

Accra, June 21, GNA – The Government of Ghana has welcomed a diplomatic rapprochement between Europe and Iran aimed at de-escalating the rising hostilities between Israel and Iran.
It describes the move as a necessary step towards peace and stability in the region.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana expressed strong support for the initiative, urging the international community to rally behind ongoing diplomatic efforts.
“We take the considered view that this diplomatic initiative should be embraced and encouraged by the international community,” the statement said.
The government reiterated its longstanding position that sincere and constructive diplomacy was the only viable, pragmatic, and humane option to resolving the worsening conflict.
“Ghana has always maintained that sincere and genuine diplomatic engagement is the only
viable, pragmatic and humane option to resolving the current conflict,” the Ministry noted.
As the current Chair of the Governing Board of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and peaceful resolution of international disputes.
“Ghana has consistently championed dialogue and diplomatic pathways towards resolving the concerns of all parties,” the statement emphasized.
The government further called on Israel to reconsider its stance and join the ongoing diplomatic process.
“Ghana urges Israel to reconsider its position and participate in the ongoing diplomatic talks,” the Ministry said, warning that the current conflict’s humanitarian toll was already being felt across the international community.
“The devastating effect of this conflict is already being felt by the entire international community and further escalation will only exacerbate the
consequences,” it added.
The statement reflected Ghana’s proactive diplomatic engagement and its role in promoting
international peace and security through multilateral cooperation.
The country has maintained a balanced approach in foreign policy, often advocating for peaceful
negotiations in conflict situations.

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that the United States military has conducted air strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, directly joining Israel’s ongoing air campaign to dismantle Iran’s nuclear programme.
The decision marks a significant escalation in regional tensions, drawing an immediate response from Tehran.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump declared, “We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.”
He added that “All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home.”
The strikes come after more than a week of Israeli attacks on Iranian military and nuclear facilities. U.S. and Israeli officials have suggested that American stealth bombers equipped with powerful 30,000-lb. “bunker buster” bombs offered the best chance of destroying heavily fortified underground sites like Fordow.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed attacks on at least one facility, noting it was “extensively damaged” but with no immediate risk of off-site contamination.
Iran, however, has vowed retaliation if the U.S. were to directly join Israel’s assault, raising fears of a broader regional conflict. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated earlier that U.S. military involvement “would be very, very dangerous for everyone.”
Trump’s decision represents a perilous gambit, particularly as he campaigned on a promise of keeping America out of costly foreign conflicts.
While the strikes aim to weaken a longtime foe and curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions, critics warn of unpredictable consequences and a potential spiral into a wider war.

Kalsoume Sinare, a well-known actress and former model from Ghana, has been nominated to serve as ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain.
Whereas Kojo Bonsu, a Ghanaian businessman, sports administrator, and politician, who served as the Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly from 2013 to 2016 has been nominated as Ambassador to China.
Both are known members of the National Democratic Congress who campaigned strongly for the party during the 2024 electioneering campaign.

June 21 (BBC/GNA) – Israel says it has killed a senior Iranian commander who helped plan the Hamas 7 October 2023 attack on southern Israel, in a strike on Saturday on the city of Qom.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the killing of Saeed Izadi marked a key point in the conflict. He was “one of the orchestrators” of the attack, which killed about 1,200 people and saw many others taken to Gaza as hostages, said IDF chief Eyal Zamir.
“The blood of thousands of Israelis is on his hands,” he said on Saturday, calling it a “tremendous intelligence and operational achievement.”
Iran did not report Mr Izadi’s killing and has previously denied involvement in Hamas’s attack.
The IDF said it had killed him in a strike on an apartment in Qom, south of Tehran, in the early hours of Saturday. He had been in charge of the Palestine Corps of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps’s (IRGC) Quds Force, responsible for handling ties with the Palestinian armed groups.
He was reportedly instrumental in arming and financing Hamas, and had been responsible for military co-ordination between senior IRGC commanders and Hamas leaders, the IDF said.
In April 2024, Mr Izadi narrowly survived an Israeli air strike targeting the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria – an attack that killed several high-ranking Quds Force commanders.
Israel later on Saturday also said it had killed another Quds Force commander, Behnam Shahriyari, in a drone strike as he was travelling in a car through western Iran.
He had been responsible for transporting missiles and rockets to Iran’s proxy groups across the region, including Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, said the IDF.

Former NPP presidential aspirant, Dr. Arthur Kennedy, is using striking political metaphors to spotlight what he sees as the party’s urgent need for renewal and leadership reform after its 2024 election defeat.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, June 21, 2025, Dr. Kennedy referenced Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s now-famous “bus” analogy — a metaphor for the party’s internal structure and strategic direction.
Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has cautioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against resorting to religious and tribal sentiments as the party gears up for its 2026 presidential primaries and the 2028 general elections.
Addressing the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference in the Ashanti Region on Saturday, June 21, Dr Bawumia described recent attempts to inject religious and ethnic bias into the party’s internal politics as “very dangerous” and a threat to the unity and strength of the NPP.
“It is very, very important that we don’t allow people to come in with explanations that are not factual, that are made up, and that divide our party,” he said.
“We are a united party, encompassing people from all ethnic groups, all religions… We are part of the elephant family.”
Dr Bawumia noted that findings from the Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye Constitutional Committee Report and other research show clearly that religion and ethnicity did not influence the outcome of the 2024 elections.
“My 4.7 million votes, was it only Muslims who voted for me? It’s not possible. They were all different voters,” he stressed.
He rejected the notion that a candidate’s faith should determine their electability and expressed disappointment in those attempting to use religion or tribalism to gain political advantage within the party.
“If that was the case, I wouldn’t have contested at all. I would have stepped aside because I’m not a selfish person. I value the party…. I will not jeopardise the ability of the party to win the 2028 election. It’s too important. I would have stepped aside,” he said.
The remarks come amid increasing speculation and internal jostling within the NPP ahead of the January 2026 presidential primaries.
Dr Bawumia is widely considered a frontrunner in the race and has consistently positioned himself as a candidate who prioritises party unity and national cohesion over personal ambition.
Professor Godfred Bokpin, a Finance and Economics Lecturer at the University of Ghana, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama for what he describes as a lack of urgency in tackling illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—during the first six months of his current administration.
Prof. Bokpin argued that although six months may seem a short period, the President had enough executive power and political goodwill early in his tenure to launch bold interventions against the escalating environmental threat.
“Six months is too short, but you know what? Six months has also been long enough for the president to demonstrate. Do we need like three years to declare a state of emergency? How many years do we need to repeal the L.I, which they all agreed in opposition that they ought to go?” he questioned in an interview on Joy FM.
Prof. Bokpin suggested that the same level of resolve shown by the Mahama administration in stabilising the economy should have been directed toward curbing illegal mining. He warned that continued inaction could have dire international repercussions for Ghana, including the risk of an ethical boycott of its gold exports.
He urged the government to show stronger political will in confronting galamsey and to implement decisive reforms to restore public confidence in the country’s environmental governance systems.

The Western Regional Health Directorate has triggered its public health emergency response system following a sharp rise in Monkeypox cases, with the region now accounting for 71% of all confirmed cases nationwide.
The announcement was made at the Western Regional Development Retreat held in Essipong, Sekondi-Takoradi, on Saturday, June 21, where health officials disclosed alarming statistics. Chief Pharmacist of the Regional Health Directorate, Kwadwo Okyere Apenteng, speaking on behalf of the Regional Health Director, revealed that the Western Region recorded its first Monkeypox case on May 23 in Tarkwa.
“Monkeypox is also in the country, and currently, the Western Region is number one; we have taken over. 71% of the cases in the country are coming from the Western Region. As it stands, we have 187 suspected cases and 43 confirmed cases,” he said.
He added that the Directorate is intensifying surveillance and public education as part of a broader emergency response strategy to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.
The outbreak has sparked renewed concerns over the region’s health infrastructure. Addressing the same event, Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson stressed the urgent need to strengthen healthcare systems and complete stalled health projects—particularly the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital.
“Our regional hospital in Effia Nkwanta is undergoing some revamping, but as we speak, the work is stalled. I pray that, very soon, work will resume so that we can complete it for the very purpose for which that project was started,” he noted.
The Regional Minister also called on the Western Regional House of Chiefs to support advocacy efforts to upgrade key health facilities and bolster the region’s preparedness for future health emergencies.
The first batch of Ghanaian pilgrims returning from Mecca landed at the Yakubu Tali International Airport in Tamale, Northern Region, amidst loud cheers and praise for President John Dramani Mahama and his government for their unwavering support to the Muslim community in Ghana.
Approximately 664 pilgrims arrived around 5:00 pm on Friday, June 20, to a rousing welcome led by the Chairman of the Hajj Board, Collins Dauda, alongside the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, and the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu.
Excited family members and friends lined up for over a kilometre outside the airport premises to welcome the returnees, singing praises to Allah and chanting in celebration.
A visibly cheerful Mr. Dauda commended President Mahama for his continued support and dedication to the Muslim community.
“We are extremely grateful to President Mahama for his commitment and support to Muslims in Ghana. He has never disappointed us. I always say that President Mahama is a blessing to the Ummah in Ghana,” he stated.
He also praised all stakeholders for a successful Hajj process and thanked the pilgrims for representing Ghana with exemplary conduct throughout their journey.
Mr. Dauda further disclosed that all Ghanaian pilgrims are expected to return home by June 27, stating, “By the 27th of June, every pilgrim from Ghana would have arrived.”
In total, about 6,000 Ghanaian pilgrims are being airlifted directly from the Holy Land via seven separate flights scheduled between June 20 and June 27, 2025.
“This is the first batch we are welcoming in Tamale. Tomorrow, there will be another flight; the next day, one more. On the fourth day, there will be the fifth flight, and two more flights on the fifth day, making a total of seven. After that, we move to Accra,” Mr. Dauda explained.
He attributed the remarkable success of the 2025 Hajj to President Mahama’s direct involvement, noting, “For the first time in the history of Hajj organisation, the President provided the white garments (Ihram) used by male pilgrims for free. This has never happened before, and we owe it a duty to say, ‘Allah bless and keep President John Mahama safe.’”
He added that all flights departing from Tamale were fully booked and operated according to schedule without any delays.
“We had a successful Hajj. From Medina to Mecca, then to Mina, Arafat, Muzdalifah, Jamarat, and finally returning to Mecca, all movements went smoothly.”
Northern Regional Minister Adolf Ali also commended the Hajj effort, stating that this year’s smooth operations have silenced critics of President Mahama and the NDC.
“This year’s Hajj has silenced all critics. No one can genuinely say anything negative about our efforts. This was a peaceful and historic Hajj. I commend all Hajj staff and pilgrims for the teamwork that led to the joy we see on their faces today,” he said.

The Western Region MMDCEs paid a courtesy call to Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, Amenfi Central’s indefatigable MP, affectionately known as Amenfi Yaa Asantewaa, Obaanaaa .
They expressed gratitude for her tireless efforts and contributions to the region’s development.
Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe warmly received the MMDCEs, encouraging them to work collaboratively and adhere to the President’s code of conduct to strengthen democracy.
Eight individuals have been arrested by the Central North Regional Police Command for engaging in illegal mining activities and illicit drug peddling at Ayanfuri in the Central Region.
This forms part of the command’s sustained efforts to crack down on illegal mining and related crimes.
The individuals arrested include five Ghanaians identified as Isaac Odum, 39, and Lazarus Sango, 44, believed to be the owners of the site. Other Ghanaian suspects include Stephen Nkrumah, 30; Kofi Emmanuel, 23; and John Nkrumah, 27.
Three Burkinabe nationals, Sulemana Naaba, 36; Benjamin Adibanga, 29; and Iddis Rogo, 30, were also arrested at the site.
The team seized five pumping machines, two rubber bowls containing sand, a gasoline generator, and a gallon of cyanide, a deadly chemical commonly used in illegal mining.
At a news conference, DCOP Abraham Acquaye told Citi News that all the suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned before court for further action.
However, he noted that the Central North Regional Command’s efforts to combat illegal mining are being hindered by the inactivity of the Assin Fosu District Court, which has been non-operational for over four months due to the judge’s indisposition.
DCOP Acquaye explained that as a result, the police have been left with no option but to grant bail to suspects in galamsey-related cases. However, the command says it will not relent on its efforts to crack down on galamsey in the area.
The IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed over 60 personnel from the National Headquarters to assist the Central North Regional Command in effectively combating the menace of illegal mining.
DCOP Acquaye, therefore, urged the public to provide timely information to support efforts in clamping down on other criminal activities, including drug trafficking.

The Kwabenya Manye, Naa Koikoi Dugbatey II, has issued a strong endorsement of the current Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, while dismissing his rival, Adama Latse, as an ineffective leader during his time in office.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, June 18, the Kwabenya Manye praised King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II for his transformative leadership, citing the construction of schools and numerous developmental projects across Greater Accra and beyond.
“The Ga people have witnessed unprecedented progress under King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II,” she declared. “Unlike his predecessor, Adama Latse, who did little to advance our communities, the current Ga Mantse has demonstrated a clear commitment to development.”
Call for Unity and Warning to Detractors
Naa Koikoi Dugbatey II also highlighted the Ga Mantse’s role in fostering peace between the Ga and Ashanti kingdoms. She noted that under the leadership of the current Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, longstanding tensions were resolved, paving the way for the historic visit of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to the Ga Traditional Area.
“The Ga people have moved forward, and we will not allow anyone to disrupt the peace and progress we now enjoy,” she warned. She cautioned detractors of King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II to desist from undermining his reign or face “the wrath of the ancestors and the living.”
Challenge to Adama Latse
In a direct challenge to the former Ga Mantse, Naa Koikoi Dugbatey II demanded that Adama Latse provide evidence of any developmental projects he initiated during his reign.
“If Adama Latse claims to have been a leader of substance, let him show the people what he achieved. The records are clear—King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has done more for the Ga State in a few years than his predecessor did in his entire reign,” she asserted.
Support for Continuity
The Kwabenya Manye urged Ga traditional leaders and citizens to rally behind King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, emphasizing that his leadership is vital for the continued growth of the Ga State.
“The Ga people deserve progress, unity, and strong leadership. King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has proven himself, and we stand firmly behind him,” she concluded.
The press conference has further intensified the debate over Ga traditional leadership, with supporters of the current Ga Mantse calling for an end to what they describe as “needless distractions” from rival factions.

Former coach of 2017 US Open Champion, Sloane Stephens, Roger Smith has praised the attitude of players participating in the Tennis Clinic co-organized by Africa 10 Foundation and the Ghana Tennis Federation.
The two day event is headlined by former United States Tennis Association President Katrina Adams and former coach of 2017 US Open Champions Sloane Stephens, Roger Smith.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports on the sidelines of the first day of the clinic held at the Accra Sports Stadium tennis courts, Smith was delighted with the players’ commitment.
“All these kids can play; what is impressive is their attitude and that’s the beginning of a champion, having the right attitude.”
“These kids are great, there’s a lot of talent here, there’s a lot of talent so with the coaches now understanding and learning how to develop that talent, is the key…and that’s what we are here to do” Smith said.
On his part, coach Joseph Doe-Adjayni stated, “It’s been very educative. Taking the children through [the sessions], we realized a lot of their mistakes and tried to correct and I believe once we are able to take them and use them, they are going to become good players.”
